W
elcome to the New Year! Some in the roofing industry had a 2011 to look back on and cheer and others are glad it has mercifully ended. I hope yours was great and that your 2012 will be even better. Last year this column made a prediction that for most of us did not exactly work out. It stated that after several years of a slack economy something had to change. The nation’s economy was in for a change of course, either up or down, just different. Is it me, or did 2011 seem like Groundhog Year? At the end, at least in my part of the roofing world, it was same-old-same-old. The economy went along at a continuing slow pace. The price of raw goods continued to rise, but not so much as to cause real change in our markets. So that prediction was wrong. Do I dare make another or go back to making New Year’s resolutions? I will stay away from the broad economy and predict a little closer to the roofing industry this time. I predict 2012 will be a very interesting year for roofing. Skip the fact that this is an election year. That will make some things interesting but will not change the price of asphalt or the amount of rain and snow we will get or how many hail or wind storms will hit. So many more things impact the roofing industry than mere politics. New demands for fall protection will continue to be an “A” topic for 2012. Trade groups will continue to argue that there is a better way to manage falls from height than those being demanded by OSHA. For my part, I remain delighted that this argument is being played out. New demands for crane fitness and crane operator training will be interesting to watch in 2012. The rules relating to crane operator training are not set to take full impact until 2014 but many owners are demanding compliance now. New demand for our products and services will bring on some interesting challenges as roofing contractors will take on the significant task of ramping up their workforces. Immigration reform, or at least the talk about it, will be more than interesting in 2012, especially in the face of emerging demand for skilled labor; the kind of skilled labor that is typified by its Spanish accent. The new International Green Construction Code will make life interesting for some roofing contractors in 2012. Code changes in general will place new demands on everyone involved in the chain from suppliers to specifiers to estimators to contractors and even installers in some instances. INDUSTRY NEWS Allied Announces Regional Reorganization EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Allied Building Products Corp. announced a strategic regional reorganization of its Eastern Division. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, John McLaughlin, president of Exteriors – Eastern Division has appointed Allen Baldree, Steve Whitcomb and Eric Grubbs as the leaders of the newly formed eastern regions. Steve Whitcomb has accepted the role of regional manager ■ Allen Baldree of the newly formed North Atlantic region, which will include the Ohio Valley, Michigan, Upstate New York and New England branches. Midwest Roofing Contractors Association Presents Industry Awards GLENVIEW, Ill. — The Midwest Roofing Contractors Association (MRCA) recently presented four prestigious association awards at the MRCA 62nd Annual Conference in Rosemont, Ill. Jim Barr, Barr Roofing, Abilene, Texas, was honored with the distinctive James Q. McCawley Award. This award is given to an individual in recognition of their devotion to the roofing industry and is the most prestigious award given by MRCA. Empire Roofing donated a 20,000-square-foot roof for EXPANCO, a non-profit document destruction organization. Founded in 1980, the organization employs and trains handicapped and disabled workers, placing many of them into productive jobs in the community. The association also presented Diamond Roofiing, Manhattan, Kan., with the SHARP Award. This aaward recognizes a MRCA member company for ttheir dedication to improving job site safety through development, implementation and enforcement of a safety and risk management program. MRCA’s Industry Innovation Award honors a supplier or manufacturer for their work towards the advancement of the roofing industry through innovations or product development related to safety, technology, efficiency or environment, and who has significantly improved the well-being of the roofing contractor. This year’s recipient was SafePro LP for their development of the RiskPro Roof Hatch Fall Protection System. “We are thrilled with all the recipients in this year’s award program,” said Adams. “MRCA is comprised of an outstanding group of talented and committed roofing contractors. FMCSA Issues Final Rule to Ban Handheld Cell Phone Use WASHINGTON — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued the final rule to ban the use of handheld cell phones by commercial vehicle drivers. Specifically the rule allows for the continued use of hands-free devices, stating, “The Agency (FMCSA) does not believe sufficient data exist to justify a ban of both handheld and hands-free use of mobile telephones by drivers operating CMVs in interstate commerce.” Note also that the rule bans the use of push-to-talk technology which the agencies consider to be cell phone technology but does not ban the use of CB radios because “The use of CB and two-way radios and other electronic devices by CMV drivers for other functions is outside the scope of consideration in this rulemaking.” ATA’s Office of Public Affairs is currently drafting an official statement about the rule. 19 Things to Do You May Not Have Gotten To

odern life can be hectic and time consuming. For small business owners, time management can be even more challenging. Here are some to do’s you may want to make sure you have gotten to and done. If it contains items where you were going to get to it but never have, make a list and start a few at a time. 1. Do you have a regular and living will? If not, should something happen to you, circumstances can quickly become very complicated. Lawyers and emotions rarely mix well. Even if you do not have your estate all figured out, put something in place to make sure the government is not your estate planner. You can always change it. Does that will include instructions regarding children should you and your wife die together in an accident? 2. Do you have a power of attorney authorizing someone to make decisions should you become incapacitated or sick? This takes some trust, but if you are in intensive care, someone has to sign those payroll checks. 3. Do you have photos of everything in your house and your office/shop? Are those photos stored off site? If you have a fire or tornado, you need to be able to prove what you own. 4. In the last five years, have you reviewed your insurance coverage with a “professional” multi-line insurance agent who works with businesses? 5. Do you back up your computers off site? Just making a copy of files and putting them in a fireproof safe will not work. Fire safes do not protect from heat. Make sure your backup system is automatic and not subject to an office person remembering. 6. Do you own your own website? If you’re not sure, ask. And do you have a copy of the code that was written in case your provider goes broke?

7. Have you shopped and reviewed business phone services in the last five years? If not, there is a good chance you are paying too much. 8. Do you have a safety program and know what to do if someone is seriously injured on one of your jobs? If you were on vacation or out of the office, is there an emergency file your office manager or someone else can follow? What if it was you that was injured; would someone else know what to do? Do you have a relationship with a safety consultant? When a death occurs, it is too late to try and find a safety consultant to represent you. Now is the time to know that person and how to keep in touch with them.
MEASURINGUP 9. In case of an emergency, do you have a flashlight and water in both your office and home? 10. Do you have some cash reserves or are you always broke? Yeah, I know — kids, family, the economy, etc., etc. The simple truth is always being broke creates way too much stress and you have to fix that or every year goes by and it is the same. My Dad was a carpenter but he always had a few bucks saved for a rainy day. 11. Have you told someone important in your life thank you? Teachers, a coach, a past friend, a family member. Saying thank you is always a good thing and not enough of us do that. 12. Improve your keyboarding and typing skills. Almost all businesses and managers/owners use computers in some form. If you can’t type, it takes up too much of your time. Numerous games on the Internet can improve your skills. 13. Fix what you’re bitching about. If you have an employee that has bugged
you for years, get rid of them. If you have some type of function you go to out of loyalty, quit going and substitute something you enjoy. 14. Volunteer. Go to a shelter, bang nails at a Habitat House, do something for the community. It will make you feel good, you will be helping someone else and it will help you appreciate your life more. 15. Have a clean the office and desk day. If you have a book you bought to read and you have not read it in the last year, you are never going to read it. Do it as a company exercise. Back your pickup truck to the door and let it all fly. 16. Say No. It is OK to say no to that committee you don’t have time for or boring dinner you don’t want to attend. Setting boundaries is healthy. 17. Don’t let e-mail start your day. You have no control over what you were sent last night and how your time might be stolen. Stick to your morning

plan and then deal with e-mail. 18. Use e-mail to document legal situations but do not use it to manage conflict. Most people type poorly and there is no inflection; emotion is hard to detect. Talk conflict out, don’t e-mail it out. 19. How often do you do something for you? Make an appointment today to do something for you. Might be to go to a ball game, go hunting, or take a weekend trip with your wife, whatever? Sometimes, we mistakenly put ourselves last. What the Boeing-NLRB Case Means for You

B
oeing Co. is trying to expand production and add manufacturing capacity, something most other companies can only dream about doing in this economy. Unfortunately, Boeing has hit a snag in its attempts to expand production of its Dreamliner airplane to a new facility in South Carolina. But it is not the economy that is hampering the opening of the new assembly line. It’s the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Under President Barack Obama, the NLRB has become markedly more pro-union and has been busily working to reverse longstanding rulings to favor unions. This is happening even as the number of private-sector employees who are union members has continued to decline. Last year, 6.9 percent of private sector wage and salary workers were members of a union, down from 7.2 percent in 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Labor. At the moment, both Boeing and the NLRB seem prepared to slug out their differences in hearings that could drag on for months. Employers should be paying attention to the dispute because it involves issues that could affect them.
The Boeing Battle For Boeing, the beginning of the dispute stretches back several years. In 2009, the aviation giant realized its production line in Washington State couldn’t handle the demand for its new Dreamliner plane. So, Boeing decided to open a second production plant in South Carolina, and by early 2011 the facility was nearly finished and Boeing had hired more than 1,000 new workers. Then in April of this year, the NLRB charged that Boeing’s decision to open a plant in South Carolina was illegal retaliation against the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, its largest union. The production facility in Washington, in the Seattle area, has been beset by strikes by union members in ultimately every set of negotiations for each new contract, while the South Carolina facility is non-union. One of the remedies sought by the NLRB is for Boeing to move production from South Carolina to a union facility in Washington. However, Boeing wasn’t looking to replace workers in Washington or trying to bust the union. In fact, Boeing had already ramped up production at the Seattle facility, even as it opened the South Carolina plant. Boeing is fighting the NLRB vigorously. “This claim is legally frivolous and represents a radical departure from both NLRB and Supreme Court precedent,” said Boeing Executive Vice President

and General Counsel J. Michael Luttig in a statement. “Boeing has every right under both federal law and its collective bargaining agreement to build additional U.S. production capacity outside of the Puget Sound region.” For its part, the NLRB claims Boeing chose the new location in a right-to-work state as a way to eliminate the chances of strikes by union workers. “A worker’s right to strike is a fundamental right guaranteed by the National Labor Relations Act,” NLRB Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon said in a press release when the board announced the charges. In perhaps his single most alarming comment for other businesses, Solomon later released a statement arguing that the Boeing action is business as usual at the NLRB. “Contrary to certain public statements made in recent weeks, there is nothing remarkable or unprecedented about the complaint issued against the Boeing Company on April 20,” he said in the May 9 statement. So far, Boeing and the NLRB are still locked in a slow-moving hearing process. The administrative judge of that hearing denied Boeing’s request to dismiss the lawsuit. However, in August the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee issued a broad subpoena ordering the NLRB to turn over all documents related to the Boeing case. This was an unprecedented step, according to Solomon. “To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time since 1940 that the National Labor Relations Board has been the subject of a Congressional subpoena,” he said in a statement. “I am disappointed and surprised by this development.”
LEGALLYSPEAKING The Fallout in DC The House subpoena is just one area where Congress is battling the White House and the NLRB over the Boeing case. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been blunt in his criticism of the NLRB. “Right now Boeing is stuck in what amounts to a union-controlled NLRB Star Chamber whose sole purpose is to extract a pound of flesh from the company,” said Graham in a statement following the administrative judge’s decision to allow the case to proceed. “Eventually Boeing will break free from the union-dominated process and move to a truly independent court of law. It’s there that Boeing ultimately prevails over this frivolous NLRB complaint. … South Carolina earned the right to build these airplanes and no unelected bureaucracy is going to take that away from us.” Graham is one of 19 Republican senators who signed a letter to Obama vowing to block two of the president’s nominations to the NLRB — one is Solomon’s appointment as general counsel. The other is that of board member Craig Becker, who Obama granted a recess appointment last year. The Senate has yet to confirm Solomon and Becker, former associate general counsel to both the Service Employees International Union and the AFL-CIO, is scheduled to step down at the end of the year. Currently, there are two other board positions on the five-member board that are unfilled. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a two-member NLRB board cannot issue decisions, so unless the Senate moves to confirm new board members, the NLRB will be effectively hamstrung once Becker’s term ends at the end of this year. According to the letter from the senators, the suit against Boeing is “an attack on millions of workers in 22 right-to-work states, as well as a government-led act of intimidation against American companies that should have the freedom to choose to build plants in right-to-work states. If the NLRB prevails, it will only encourage companies to make their investments in foreign nations, moving jobs and economic growth overseas.” In early December, Boeing settled its differences with the Machinists Union, the union responsible for filing unfair labor
practice charges with the NLRB and getting this entire dispute kicked off. For now, Boeing will continue producing its Dreamliner in South Carolina, but agreed to keep production of other airplanes in the Seattle area. Although the dispute looks to be settled, there are lessons to be learned from the NLRB’s pursuit of Boeing.

Steps to Take Now In the current economy and with a presidential election on the horizon, employers need to understand what’s at stake in the increasingly pro-union environment being fortuned by the administration. • Be prepared for increasing union activity. As the economy continues to struggle, more workers may be tempted to join unions or to unionize workplaces that have been non-union. The new NLRB rules will spur union leaders to aggressively start ramping up unionizing efforts and seek government help for those activities. If you have a unionized workforce, be prepared for more recruiting efforts of any non-union employees you may have. If you have traditionally been a non-union company, you may find union organizers looking to attract new members amongst your employees. • Be educated and prepared. Along with periodically checking the pulse of union interest in your workforce, you should pro-
actively anticipate questions and inquiries about unions and unionizing efforts. When it comes to responding to potential union activities, you need to do everything by the book so that your responses are legal and correct. If a manager in a satellite office asks his employee about union activity or makes an anti-union comment using company e-mail, the consequences for the entire company could be far-reaching and serious. This is also a good time to review and update training materials. If you have not offered formal training regarding how to respond to unionizing activity and questions for managers and supervisors, you should seriously consider instituting it now. You should also develop a clear reporting chain so workers and managers can quickly escalate questions and concerns. When developing training materials, be sure to consult with in-house counsel, outside attorneys and the HR department to be sure that those materials are appropriate and relevant for your industry and employees. • Be aware of regulatory and legislative changes. The NLRB has released a flurry of new rulings regarding unions and even non-union worker rights. The next election cycle will also be heavily contested in some areas, and unions will again throw a lot of money into races that could impact your company directly. You need to understand exactly what is happening in your state and nationally, so that you are not caught off guard. Outside counsel can be a valuable source of information. Trade associations and other industry groups can often provide helpful legislative and regulatory updates. Employers have their hands full right now, but they need to make the time to understand what is going on with the union companies like Boeing, the NLRB and their own employees. Otherwise, they could be unprepared for actions and activities that could have far-reaching implications for all of their stakeholders. Richard D. Why Sustainable Roofs? Do We Have the Reasons!

T
he Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing is pleased to collaborate with Roofing Contractor to provide a monthly perspective about roofing and the environment. During the next 12 months, we will look at many aspects of roofing and sustainability, with a focus on how roofing contractors can become better equipped to participate and profit in the new green building market. For our first column, we’d like to get right to the bottom line: Why are roofs so important to the environment? The onesentence answer is, “There are two and a half million reasons!” That’s the surface area of re-roofs installed on nonresidential rooftops every year in the United States. And this vast area of re-roofing is virtually untouched by current green building programs, which tend to focus narrowly on new construction or major building retrofits. It’s also a lot of territory when you consider that the total footprint of buildings certified by the leading green building program (LEED) after more than 10 years is still less than what U.S. roofing contractors install in a single year. Because of the large commercial building area affected by reroofing every year, the Center has researched the energy and environmental value of that space to determine its strategic value to our nation. And our findings are truly amazing. If all the existing nonresidential roofs in the United States were retrofitted to meet the most recent standards in the 2012 International Energy Efficiency Code, the annual savings in heating and cooling costs would exceed 700 trillion BTUs. And that savings would be renewable and sustainable because our nation would continue to collect that 700 trillion BTU benefit each and every year for decades to come. Not only can we save amazing amounts of energy, we also can produce new clean energy using available commercial rooftop space. If one one-quarter of existing commercial rooftop space were suitable for some form of solar power (photovoltaic, solar thermal or daylighting), the total energy produced would exceed the power of 20 Grand Coulee Dams. But energy savings and production are just the start for our nation’s rooftops. Through improvements in reducing roofing waste and recycling roofing materials, our industry can make a greater impact than any other industry in reducing solid waste in this country. Currently, construction waste accounts for 25 percent of all solid waste, and roofing accounts for 25 percent of the construction waste total. That means that a 50 percent reduction in roofing waste could reduce overall solid waste in the United States by more than 3 percent.

The same benefits of scale apply to many other important environmental impacts. Roofs can reduce unwanted storm water runoff while capturing and diverting rainwater for other important building uses. Cool roof surfaces can help mitigate the effects of the urban heat island effect, reduce the need for peak electricity production and offset global warming. Because roofing products can be manufacturer from a wide variety of raw materials, the roofing industry offers one of the best opportunities to develop new products with reduced environmental impact. And finally, a well-designed and well-maintained roof can extend the service life of buildings and help ensure a safe environment for the people who work and live in them. Given this amazing potential for environmental benefit, it’s easy to see why the Center and its members are excited about the role of roofing in green buildings. And although, we actually have two and a half million reasons to talk about, we’ll focus on a few of the best reasons during the coming months. Please join us! Running a Successful Roofing Company

ichael Gerber in his book The E-Myth talks about how most roofing companies fail because they are started by excellent roofers with little business knowledge. Shortly into owning their own company they realize running a roofing business takes more than just being a great roofer. The business side of a roofing company tends to bring the most headaches, causes profit loss and prevents entrepreneurs from realizing their dreams. This series of articles is designed to take a business owner from Zero to Hero in one year. Each article will focus on a critical part your business. Confucius said, “A smart person learns from his mistakes; a wise person learns from the mistakes of others.” I hope this insight will help you avoid mistakes and continue your success.
Growing a Successful Company Small roofing companies tend to be more successful than larger ones. They typically have a higher profit margin, less debt and greater customer loyalty. The reasons are simple. Small business owners are directly involved in every aspect of the business process. Think of the owner as a hub in a wheel. Each of the different business divisions are spokes in that wheel. The four big spokes are marketing, sales, operations and administration. Every decision made in the business goes through the owner, and the owner has complete control over the entire operation. Promises made at the initial sales estimate are delivered through completion. Eventually word gets out and referrals bring in a steady stream of work. But what happens when the business starts to grow? It’s not humanly possible for one person to run everything, not even with today’s technology. Things typically get out of balance when the owner has to rely on others. The only way to ensure continued success is to empower employees. Follow

these guidelines: • Hire slow and fire fast. Look for talent and ability, not skill. • Teach your employees how to do the job better than you can. • Give them the authority to make tough decisions. • And the responsibility to make good ones. • Measure duties and manage results. Always remember, as the saying goes, “You cannot manage what you cannot measure.”
Planning for Expansion The next step is to remove yourself from the center of the business. This is the hard part for most owners. Spend 60 percent of your time working on the business, not in the business. More than half your time should be spent working with employees, developing future process and managing

business operations, rather than talking to customers, dealing with suppliers or doing other daily tasks employees can do. Jim Collins in the book Good to Great says, “You get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus and the right people in the right seats. When you do the bus drives itself.” Planning for growth is critical. The common way to grow a company is by increasing marketing — the thought being if marketing increases, leads increase, sales increase, work increases and more money is made. I wish it were that easy, but it’s not, as you may have learned. As shown in the image in Figure 1, increasing marketing alone only causes the business to run lopsided — it’s like increasing the length of just one of the spokes in the wheel. Without additional salespeople, leads are burned and potential customers become upset. Without trained crews, work isn’t completed correctly, causing callbacks. Without enough capital to finance increased payroll, the company can ruin account status and cause dissent. The way to successfully grow a roofing company is to increase the length of each spoke in the business wheel slightly — all at the same time. Here are the seven steps: 1. Identify one improvement in each of the four key business areas: Marketing, Sales, Operations and Administration. (“If it ain’t broke, break it!” — Sam Walton.) 2. Set a timeline for implementation. 3. Quietly work on each division behind the scenes. 4. Test each improvement prior to launch. 5. Launch the new improvements close to each other. 6. Usher in the change personally to verify adoption and ensure success. 7. Repeat and grow the wheel even bigger. Think to Drink — Hydrate in Winter

W
e all have plenty of reminders to hydrate “often and early” up on the roof in June, but how many of us really “think to drink” in the winter? According to some medical authorities, our bodies are almost 75 percent water, with about the same salinity as the North Atlantic. A healthy body can lose as much as 3 to 6 liters (up to 12 pounds) of water per day, summer or winter, depending on work tasks and environmental conditions. Amazingly, just the water vapor that we normally exhale can fill more than a one liter soda bottle every day. Our brains may send us clear signals that we’re thirsty in June, but in February we might be less inclined to toss back a bottle of water as often as we should. Therefore, we need to be aware of a few telltale signs that can indicate the onset of dehydration. • Thirst. Thirst is a conscious urge to drink fluids. A slight 1 to 2 liter body fluid loss will usually initiate this brain signal. Loss of 4 liters is critical. For reasons mostly unexplained by medical science, a fluid loss of at least 1.5 to 3 liters is required in cold weather to create the same level of “thirst” urges experienced in warm weather. Therefore, despite how thirsty we think we are, we must remain vigilant and establish a regular schedule to hydrate during winter work. • Urination. Everyone’s bladder is a different size, but if you don’t feel the urge to empty your bladder all day, it may be a sign of impending dehydration. Urine should be light yellow and “gin-clear.” Urine darker than normal indicates the kidneys are running low on filtrating-dilution fluids and the victim may be approaching moderate dehydration. Serious damage to internal organs and physiological functions can happen quickly and lead to extreme dehydration. • Feeling dried out. All of your external mucous membranes will tend to be drier. Dried, cracked lips and nose seem to come with winter, but they’re also sure signs you’re becoming dehydrated. Internal organs such as the stomach and intestines and fluid-filled joints tend to replace blood plasma losses from their own resources, causing indigestion and cramps. As the central

nervous system fluids drop in volume, mild to severe headaches may result. Diarrhea is an obvious and sometimes serious cause of dehydration, possibly requiring medical attention. If the pinched-up skin on the back of the hand tends to return more slowly, it can indicate possible systemic dehydration. • Total blood volume. Your blood will tend to lose fluid (plasma) and become more sluggish, leading to a slightly rapid or weak pulse. Squeezing the tips of the fingers will turn them pale and their pink color will only return slowly. In severe dehydration, the capacity of the red blood cells to efficiently absorb oxygen into the body and release carbon dioxide may diminish. This leads to rapid, deep breathing to replace oxygen and extreme muscle fatigue due to carbolic acid buildup in the tissues. • Cold. Dehydration can exacerbate many other debilitating conditions, such as hypothermia, frostbite and suspension trauma. Low blood volume means that less metabolic heat will be distributed around the body during cold weather. When the brain detects this negative thermal condition it will “sacrifice” blood flow to those areas farthest from the core organs — the heart, lungs and brain — which are located in the upper chest and head. Death by freezing is faster when dehydrated. • Behavioral changes. Dehydration, like low blood sugar and hypothermia, can cause an initial, overall drowsy feeling.
SAFETYADVICE Moderate dehydration results in mental lethargy and irritability. While not all grumpy roofers are dehydrated, all dehydrated ones eventually become grumpy. In advanced cases, it can cause the victim to become totally disorientated and possibly go into physical shock (rapid, erratic pulse, rapid breathing, pale skin and possible death). The procedures most emergency medical professionals recommend to rehydrate the victim is based on the WIWU Principle — water ingested versus water used. We should carefully monitor and replace our fluid losses as time progresses, and not all at once when symptoms suddenly become apparent (and possibly insurmountable). Unfortunately with dehydration, once the symptoms are finally recognized we may already be in the moderate to severe stages where debilitation is to be expected. Even the capability to discern a problem or the effort required to abate it becomes more than we can handle by ourselves. The inevitable lost-work downtime and medical assistance necessitated at that point makes prevention your best option.
Proper Hydration Dehydration for winter workers is often a cumulative process, as symptoms indicating low bodily fluids can proliferate overnight (with a few beers after work) and carry into the next work shift if not identified and corrected promptly. We may realize we should take on more fluids, but we often don’t know how much, how fast, or what kind. The following bullet list may prove helpful to develop your company’s rehydration plan: • Start with a 30-minute hydration period prior to a physically stressful day of work. You could combine your crew’s morning stretch and warm-up exercises with a 16 ounce bottle of water. Starting with a “full tank” may require you to get hydrating the day before a big job even starts. Everyone’s absorption rate will differ. The higher your body fat index and the older you are, the slower your rate of absorption. • Camelback packs allow the wearer to take sips all day long through a tube to keep fluids up. Filling it with warm water and insulating both the pack and the tube
will prevent the contents from freezing. • Monitor your intake and output regularly. Check the color and quantity of your urine. Adjust your intake accordingly. The kidneys can process up to 15 liters of fluid a day, so results can be analyzed and rehydration determined quickly. • Although unlikely in most circumstances, Hyper-hydration (or water intoxication) is caused by drinking too much water in too short a time. It can result in serious organ damage (kidneys) and possible death (intercellular brain swelling). The International Sports Medicine Institute recommends hydrating with ½ to ⅔ of an ounce of water for every pound of body weight every day. For a 190-pound worker, this could amount to 3-4 quarts by the end of the shift.

• Adjust your lifestyle a little. Eat more foods with high water content. The more fruits and vegetables you eat every day, the less water you’ll be required to regularly replace. • Drink an extra large glass of water before bed to replace the loss anticipated while you sleep (as much as a liter). • Have a thermos full of hot chicken soup or tomato soup for lunch. It’s a great way to give your mid-day hydration a boost. If you’re going to have a few brews after work, ask the bartender for a large glass of water as a chaser. • When filling water bottles before win-
ter work, use hot or warm water in a few for use later in the day. Luke warm water is more quickly assimilated and easier to drink than ice water in February. Keep a bottle under your jacket or vest to prevent freezing. • Avoid caffeine. It’s a notorious diuretic, causing frequent urination. Beyond your two “eye-opener” cups of java on the way to work, avoid drinking coffee during the day. • Never take salt tablets. A pinch of salt in your drink may help to retain fluids and promote the “thirst urge” to drink more. Too much salt is detrimental, as it will cause the body to demand more water to counterbalance the sodium-ion reaction. • Tap water is a cheap hydrator, but electrolyte replacement drinks are good as well. Despite their costs, flavored “sports drinks” may replace depleted electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and provide a refreshing energy boost in the afternoon. • Dress in layers. Strip and reapply as necessary to prevent an unnecessary buildup of body heat under your clothing. When possible, avoid wearing heavy insulation like goose down with a “wicking” fabric beneath; this will only promote sweating out fluids you can’t afford to lose. Normally, an adult should consume “eight eights” (or eight glasses of 8-ounce volume) each day. However, when physically working hard, go ahead and drink more fluids diligently, but always continue hydration well after the task is done. Remember: the ingestion rate should match absorption rate, even while you’re sleeping. The “quarter-liter per quarter” hour is a good rule-of-thumb for construction workers in the winter. That works out to be about 32 ounces every hour. As with almost anything important, it’s always easier to talk about it than do it. Get in the habit of sending a case of water bottles to the job every day, all year round, and train employees to access it regularly. OSHA clearly lists a number of mandatory potable water requirements in Section 1926.51-Sanitation. The results? No leaks and a dry attic. At no time during the test did The Edge Vent allow or contribute to weather infiltration into the slot or the attic. Solving Intake Vent Problems Since its entry into the residential building materials market in 2008, The Edge Vent has helped solve many attic intake ventilation challenges. Snow and Ice Can Chill Confidence The recent ice dam test was conducted to alleviate the concerns of roofers hardened by the brutal winter climates in places like Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin and Canada, where conditions can bring about the worst of ice dams. Some roofing contractors in these areas have been hesitant to use The Edge Vent, questioning the wisdom of cutting a slot on the roof exactly where snow and ice can accumulate and potentially wreak havoc on a roof. However, Air Vent engineers designed the vent with three levels of weather protection: internal baffles, a drainage system and an internal weather filter. The recent test confirms if the manufacturer’s installation instructions are followed, The Edge Vent can be used with confidence in all climates. When an ice dam occurs with The Edge Vent installed on a roof, the vent will not allow leakage.
About The Test A section of The Edge Vent was installed on a roof deck with a 3/12 roof pitch — a pitch that allows for a worst-case scenario in terms of ice dam size. The roof deck with the vent installed was then placed inside an ice chamber with a constant temperature of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Water was sprayed on 800-AIR-VENT the vent daily www.airvent.com to allow the formation of an ice dam at the roof’s eave. This daily water spraying ended once the ice dam covered the first three courses of shingles. The Edge Vent remained inside the freezer maintained at 10°F and covered under ice for 30 consecutive days. For eight hours each day, the underside of The Edge Vent was heated and controlled to 50°F to allow for the formation of liquid water between the ice dam and the shingles. The relatively small amount of field seaming is completed with hot-air welding methods, which are virtually unaffected by cold or damp weather conditions. Prefabrication can also accommodate building

ince January, 2008, Hapco Inc., heat tool industry leaders, successfully launched a previously unknown Swiss tool named BAK, to what has become North America’s NEW INDUSTRY STANDARD in commercial roofing tools. New Products While hand held welders such as the Rion and Eron (modified Bitumen), and the Laron automatic overlap welder (with Modified Bitumen Kit) are available individually as well as kits, new customer needs were identified by both Hapco and BAK. The PRK2000, developed by Hapco Inc., has become an outstanding kit for maintenance departments in both small and large roofing contractors. PRK2000 combines Hapco’s Rion basic heat gun kit with the lightweight, portable HONDA EU2000 generator (48 pounds) for quick and easy, one-person operation roof repairs that require an independent power source. BAK’s NEW ROOFON automatic overlap welder, launched Spring 2011: Offers lightweight automatic overlap seam welding for small to moderate size jobs that require a machined weld (50-200sq. projects). Designed for commercial roofers who wish to grow their single ply business, but are not ready for the larger projects that require BAK’s powerhouse: the Laron welder, this 34 pound, transmission driven tool delivers a consistent quality weld at 7-8 feet per minute. The RoofOn will cut production time in half, on projects that were previously hand welded.
