Its 2009 already! This year went by surprisingly fast when you think about all that happened.
I see many similarities between PPA and my family. Each of us within PPA is unique and brings different qualities to this growing family. We each have
There are friends you spend a lot of time with, get to know personally, and make special arrangements to get together. Other friends you dont know as well, and you dont spend as much time with them
yet, youre still friends. Over a year ago, I was invited to speak at the New Jersey state convention. When I arrived, the only contact I had with Tab Morgan was by phone or e-mail. Over the next three days, it was clear that I had a new friend. To this day, we still e-mail each other and trade newsletters
different types of business: portrait, weddings, events, commercial photography, or some combination. We have different business models, multiple studios, single locations, and employees or not. But what brings us together is love for photography. This month, our members gather for education, camaraderie, and photography at Imaging USA in Phoenix. Imaging USA is the largest photographic convention and tradeshow in the country, with the most sought-after speakers in the world. Were especially fortunate to have Anne Geddes as our featured speaker this year. Her images have touched the lives of countless millions around the world, inspiring many to pick up a camera and create images themselves. But some reading this have never experienced our convention, and many have not attended a PPA convention in years. PPAs membership is over 22,000an incredible numberyet only half will attend in
and questions. And it all became possible through PPA. Thanks, Tab. Recently, I was in Atlanta for a meeting the same time our Convention Committee and Nominating Committee were meeting. It was great to see Craig Schmidt from North Dakota. I have not spent much time with Craig, but I am always impressed with his commitment and work ethic. Im sure that his local and state associations must appreciate what he gives to them; I know PPA does. During that week, I also saw
Phoenix. My challenge is simple: check out Imaging USA. Come to Phoenix and learn how to make your business stronger and more ef cient. Meet new mentors and friends who will enrich your photography and your life. Just like our personal goal is to help our children succeed, PPA is here to help you reach your goals and dreams. Our members are talented and willing to teach, and your Board of Directors, as well as our staff in Atlanta, are committed to providing you with the resources needed to survive in todays changing business climate. All we need is you. Commit the time and effort necessary to get to Phoenix, and I guarantee you wont be sorry. See you there!
PPA News & Notes
My family has been blessed, and it is a real joy for Lori and me to watch our children grow. Tyler is on the road with his band, and our girls are maturing into beautiful women. It is amazing to me that our three children are so uniquely different, yet have so many common goals. Tyler is laidback and has always loved music. He is working towards his music industry dream, and we see him maturing every day. Kelsey is our con dent child. When she sets her mind to something, she nds a way to make it happen. Kristina is competitiveshe wants to win every time. I really admire her drive and am convinced she will succeed in life because she wont have it any other way.

two others I dont see often enough, Debbie Scott and Constance Rawlins. I dont remember the rst time I met Debbie, but I met Constance through Buddy Stewart. I have the utmost respect for both women and count it a privilege to consider them friends. With smiles on their faces, they are always willing to help. PPA is fortunate to count people like these among their members. And I know I am a better person for knowing them.

TODAY While the podcast earned Forester a 2008 AN-NE Marketing Award, it is really only one piece of the puzzle, as she calls it. She started her viral campaigning on MySpace. After seeing that social media spot evolve, she hit the scene more aggressively. Forester added a blog to her Web site, got on Facebook, and has now added podcasts through iTunes.
Interestingly enough, Forester has also found that people are more likely to actually read her blog than they are her Web site or printed pieces. If she puts pricing info and ideas about what to wear to a session on her site, shell always get calls or e-mails asking for that same info. But if she writes something about that on her blog, the customers will read it. As much as Forester is reveling in the viral marketing phenomenon shes
give to the clients that you do have, do it, he says. But remember: there is really no more wiggle room. Now, when customers say they can only spend $200, you really cant upsell them. To combat that, Tonsmeire suggests nding ways to make it affordable and worth the money. Incentive buying is probably one of the best things you can do to entice customers right now. For one thing, you protect yourself from discounting your services and products so much that it bites you when the economy turns, as Tonsmeire comments. If you discount now, customers will expect it later. But if you have a deal where
created, there are still some things shes had to try and then stop. And projection/video proofs is one of them. Oddly, that didnt work for me. The proofs walking out the door became a big part of my marketing, she explains. Plus, my system allows seniors to keep a certain number of proofs based on the package they choose. The more they spend, the more proofs they keep. And almost 80 percent get to a price point where they can keep them all. This just goes to show that what works in one area of photography may not work for another. But, as Forester states emphatically, You have to gure out YOUR clientele and YOUR personality. Then you can base your
customers buy more to get more (greater discount, more/bigger products, etc.), you arent devaluing yourself. Tonsmeire also suggests trying these four things to help survive the slower economy: 1. Get by with what you have. Remember: your camera was just as good as it was three months ago, and the economy wont always be this bad
you can get the new goodies when things get a little better. 2.Be careful of discounting too much (use incentive buying instead). 3.Watch what others are doing to get ideas for keeping the business
marketing on that
and run with it. And who knows, you might nd the same kind of viral success as Beth Forester.
The annual AN-NE Marketing Awards competition recognizes outstanding ingenuity and effectiveness in real-world marketing endeavors. Named in honor of Ann Monteith and Marvel Nelson, both marketing gurus and past PPA Presidents, the competition is open exclusively to PPA members. More information is online at www.ppa.com (Competitions section).
PPA News & Notes
The key to having effective viral marketing (besides being in the right spots) is simply having something worth chatting about. Forester is always looking for new products, services, and looks to add to her repertoire. I want to nd things that people will talk about, she says. And talk they do. In fact, Forester once got a call from a mother trying to book a senior session four years in advance
because everyone was talking about Beth Forester Photography and how hard it was to get appointments.
going. Imaging USA (January 1113, 2009) is one of the best places to do this. But dont forget about all the PPA Webinars and Studio Management Services classesgreat ways to improve your business. 4.Dont sound so doomsday when talking to others. When people ask you how your business is, be positive. Being gloomy wont be inviting to any prospective customer. As hard as everything is, its not as bad as it could be, Louis concludes. A new year is starting
its time to make your business resolutions and meet the coming days head on.

TODAY PPANE THANKS ROLAND LARAMIE It can be challenging to gure out how to thank someone who has helped so much and in so many ways. Professional Photographers Association of New England (PPANE) had to do just that when, late last year, Roland Laramie, M.Photog.Cr.Hon.M.Photog., A-ASP, Hon.F-ASP, left his post as PPANEs Executive Director after 25 years of dedicated service. A highly regarded and respected photographer, Laramie has been no stranger to leadership positions in photography. In addition to his
Executive Director position, he was also a past president of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and the Executive Director for the American Society of Photographers (ASP). Laramie was very active in print competition for many years, too. In fact, he was a manager of PPAs International Print Competition after serving on the Photographic Exhibition Committee (PEC Committee). You can thank him for creating the thumbs up, thumbs down judging and for helping popularize high key photography years ago.
PPANEs Board of Directors is thanking Laramie for his service and example by dedicating their 2009 convention to him. In the words of Donna Goodhue, 2009 PPANE President, Without Rolands unshakeable integrity and calm counsel, our jobs as representatives of the New England states would have been much more dif cult over the years.
