INTRODUCTION The iSpeak English phrasebook turns your iPod or MP3 player into an English translation tool for on-the-spot reference. iSpeak English has nearly 1,500 audio tracks, organized into various categories that allow you to communicate in all typical travel situations such as finding accommodations, eating out, or expressing your perceptions and opinions. As well, iSpeak English is useful to those living in an English-speaking country who need basic words and phrases for everyday interactions. The iPod’s efficient, intuitive navigational interface allows you to quickly find those words and phrases most useful to you in a given context. Going to the MoMA in New York City? Review the Museums & Galleries album in Entertainment, as well as perhaps words and phrases in the Train, Metro & Bus album in Travel. iSpeak English then allows you to both read and hear how these words and phrases are expressed—the most effective way to replicate native pronunciation and communicate successfully. I remember my first Sony Walkman; how amazing it seemed that I could listen to whatever I wanted, wherever I was. It was also a bit overwhelming, the possible incongruities, walking through, say, Times Square listening to Chopin’s Ballade no. 1 in G Minor. Sony Walkmans and later portable CD players allowed people to create their own soundtrack to any context, making it possible to listen to a foreign language while immersed in its culture—while sitting in a café in Paris, for example. Now, digital mobile audio players such as the iPod introduce radical new ways to refine that immersion as well as add an interactive component to preparing for travel abroad or studying language in a context that will be explained in more detail below.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Connect your iPod to your computer. 2. Start up iTunes. 3. Insert the iSpeak CD into your computer. 4. Locate the “iSpeak Audio” folder/directory on the CD. 5. Choose the language you wish to install: English; Spanish/English; or French/English. 6. Click and drag the folder labeled “ENGLISH: Copy to iTunes Music Library” into your iTunes library. 7. Sync your iPod to load the iSpeak files onto your iPod.

Note: users with iTunes on a PC may need to enable the option “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” to load files directly to iTunes. This option is found in the Advanced Preferences tab under the Edit toolbar. If you do not wish to enable this option, you need to first copy the files directly to your hard drive, and then drag the files to the iTunes Music Library window.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR OTHER MOBILE AUDIO DEVICES While the iSpeak English phrasebook was designed to work with iPods, it can be used on any other digital audio player that can play MP3 audio files. iSpeak audio files are loaded in the same way as any other MP3 audio files.
LISTENING TO iSPEAK ENGLISH PHRASES Once your iSpeak English audio files have been loaded onto your iPod or other MP3 player, you can locate them in the same way you locate music files or audiobooks, by browsing Artists or Genres. iPods have a scroll wheel that is used to select different options on the screen. Once selected (i.e., highlighted), the center button is used to choose the selected option. The menu button is used to return to a previous menu. Here are the steps:

Locating iSpeak Audio by Genre If your iPod or MP3 player has many audio tracks by many artists, it may be quicker to locate the iSpeak files by selecting Genre. Here are the steps: 1. READING iSPEAK ENGLISH PHRASES There are a few different ways that you can view the English text for each iSpeak audio track. Most MP3 players will display some of this text—usually the Track, Album, and Artist.
Print Booklet If you have an MP3 player with a very small display or no display at all, the print booklet may be helpful, particularly if you want to see how a phrase is written. The booklet contains the English for each word or phrase that is included in the audio. These are organized by the Artist and Album headings.
Track, Album, and Artist Display All iPods (and many MP3 players) display a given track’s Title, Album, and Artist while the track is playing. However, small iPods such as the Nano or older iPods may not be able to display as much text immediately on the screen as bigger or newer iPods can. All iPods, however, compensate for the limited number of characters/words they can display by scrolling the title of the track when it is playing or when it is selected.
Album List Lyrics Display If you have a newer iPod (5G or later) or an MP3 player that displays lyrics, then you will be able to access the complete English text and information about other

tracks in the given album or category, as well as other albums. Track “lyrics” can be viewed on 5G or later iPods as follows: 1. Choose a track to listen to. 2. While the track is playing, click the center button twice. Each iSpeak English audio track has in its lyrics display the complete English text. The lyrics display also shows the other words and phrases in that same album. Once the lyrics display is selected, it will remain until the center button is clicked again. This allows you to more easily read the words and phrases in English while the audio is playing—not only for the current track but also for upcoming and previous tracks in that album. The current track title is always shown at the top as well as being included in the list of other tracks from the same album. The English of the current track is always preceded by the >> symbol in the track list. The current album is preceded by the > symbol in the album list that follows the track list.

TECHNIQUES FOR USING iSPEAK ENGLISH These nearly 1,500 audio tracks are literally at your fingertips for easy reference in common situations. For example, if you need to find an ATM machine in Boston you would scroll to the Bank album in Services & Shopping where you would find the phrase, “Where is there an ATM near here?” iSpeak English is also an excellent study tool for preparation for an upcoming trip. What follows are some techniques to get the most out of iSpeak English for memorizing phrases and language learning.

Playlists While iSpeak phrasebooks are thematically organized for easy navigation, iPods (and some other MP3 players) also allow you to create your own playlists, which are simply lists of tracks in whatever order you choose from any Artists/Albums in your library. Thus in preparation for an evening out on the town, you can create a playlist of words and phrases from a variety of albums and artists including perhaps Entertainment > Planning, Travel > Train, Metro & Bus, Food > Eating Out > Reservations and Eating Out > Ordering, as well as Conversation > Introductions and Conversation > Interests. If you have some music—perhaps Billie Holiday or Coldplay—such tracks can be interspersed with your iSpeak tracks to add variety to the mix. To create a playlist in iTunes, do the following: 1. From the iTunes File menu, choose New Playlist. 2. Locate this new playlist (it will be titled “untitled playlist”) in the Playlist column in iTunes. 3. Rename this new playlist with a name that describes the tracks you will put into it. 4. Locate tracks you would like to add to this new playlist from your iTunes Music Library and drag them on top of your new playlist title.
Smart Playlists In addition to playlists, the iPod and some other MP3 players will also allow you to make “smart playlists.” Smart playlists are simply playlists based on particular search criteria and ordering. To create one, choose New Smart Playlist from the iTunes File menu. For example, you could create a smart playlist with the following rules: Match all of the following rules: Genre contains Language Album contains Basics Limit to 50 items selected by least often played
The above smart playlist would consist of all words and phrases from all the Basics albums (most categories or iSpeak Artists have a Basics album that features key vocabulary for the particular topic) with those words and phrases that you

have played the least appearing first and items you have played more frequently appearing later. iPods keep track of how often you play a particular track as well as when you played it last. Thus the above playlist could be modified to order tracks by least recently played and limited only to tracks that you have listened to at least once. Match all of the following rules: Genre contains Language Album contains Basics Play Count is greater than 0 Limit to 50 items selected by least recently played Note: If you already have smart playlists, some of the iSpeak English tracks may show up in your smart playlists. You can prevent this (if you want to) by adding the following smart playlist rule: Artist does not contain iS Eng.
Ratings iPods also allow you to rate tracks on a scale of one to fi ve stars. You can rate iSpeak words and phrases according to how well you know them, perhaps giving high ratings to those words and phrases you don’t know and need to review and lower ratings to those that are more familiar and need less study. Then you can use these ratings in smart playlists such as the following: Match all of the following rules: Genre contains Language Artist contains Conversation My Rating is in the range BBB to BBBBB Limit to 50 items selected by highest rating This smart playlist will include all tracks from the “Conversation” Artist or category that you have rated between three and five stars and will sort these tracks such that tracks with higher ratings (e.g., not as well known) will appear first.

STRATEGIES TO MAXIMIZE LANGUAGE LEARNING WITH iSPEAK ENGLISH When using iSpeak phrasebooks on your iPod or other MP3 player, pay attention! While a certain amount of language can be learned passively simply by hearing, so much more can be learned through active listening. Ideally your iSpeak tracks should complement your surroundings. For example, you could listen to words and phrases in the Buying album while shopping or listen to words and phrases related to food before eating out.
Listen and Repeat All audio tracks feature the English word or phrase two times. Repeat the English immediately after hearing it, and challenge yourself to recall the English before it is played again. Most tracks of words or short phrases also contain sentences demonstrating how that word or short phrase is used. Repeat these sentences after hearing them, and again challenge yourself to figure out what these sentences mean before hearing them in English. This may require pausing playback or repeating the playback of a given track.
Change the Context One of the radical innovations of digital audio players such as iPods is that they let you change the order of tracks in endless ways through custom or smart playlists as described above. Take advantage of this functionality to create playlists that focus on particular sets of words and phrases. It is also good to add a certain amount of randomness to your lists or listening habits. You can do this by creating smart playlists that are randomly sorted or simply listening to an album without reading the track titles. Again, this may require pausing a track or repeating its playback.
Refresh Your Mind Don’t push yourself too hard! If your attention starts to waver (or you start bumping into people), take a break, listen to some music, or turn off your iPod for a while. Vary your study habits as well, sometimes listening and reading simultaneously, other times just reading or just listening.

PARA LEER LAS EXPRESIONES DE iSPEAK ENGLISH Hay varias maneras de consultar el texto que acompaña cada una de las pistas de audio de iSpeak. Con algunas excepciones, en las pantallas de los reproductores de MP3 verá la pista (palabra o expresión), la categoría (Artistas) y la subcategoría (Álbumes).
El manual Si la pantalla de su reproductor de MP3 es muy pequeña, o si no tiene pantalla, el manual que acompaña el programa será de gran utilidad. Allí se encuentran las transcripciones en inglés de cada expresión pronunciada, organizadas según la versión audio.
Visualización de la Pista, la categoría (Artista) y la subcategoría (Álbum) En la mayoría de los modelos del iPod (y en muchos reproductores de MP3) mientras que se escucha una pista, se ven los títulos de la Pista, el Artista y el Álbum. En algunos modelos (como los más pequeños o los más viejos) no se ve este texto inmediatamente en la pantalla. Sin embargo, en todos los modelos del iPod se ve el título de la pista que suena o que está seleccionada. Con iSpeak English, usted debe ver en la pantalla la expresión en español seguida por la expresión en inglés. Puede ser, sin embargo, que esta secuencia no se ve en otros reproductores de MP3.

El título de la pista que suena se ve a la cabeza de la lista y también se encuentra en la lista de pistas del mismo álbum. En la lista de pistas, la expresión en inglés que suena se precede del símbolo >>. Las otras pistas del álbum se preceden del símbolo >.

Las casi 1.500 pistas de audio del programa están literalmente al dedillo y le servirán de referencia en muchas situaciones comunes. Por ejemplo, si necesita encontrar un cajero automático en Boston, podría desplazarse hasta el álbum Banco en Servicios & Compras, donde se encuentra la frase “¿Dónde hay cerca de aquí una caja automática?” iSpeak English es sumamente útil para prepararse para ir de viaje. LIRE LES EXPRESSIONS D’iSPEAK ENGLISH Il y a plusieurs moyens de consulter le texte anglais-français qui accompagne chacun des morceaux audio iSpeak. Les lecteurs MP3 affichent une partie de ce texte—en général, les morceaux, les catégories (Artistes) et les sous-catégories (Albums).
Le livret imprimé Si l’écran de votre lecteur MP3 est trop petit—ou s’il n’a pas d’écran—le livret que nous fournissons vous sera utile. Vous y trouverez des transcriptions en anglais de chaque expression prononcée, selon l’organisation de la version audio.
L’affichage morceaux, catégories (Artistes) et souscatégories (Albums) L’iPod, ainsi que la plupart des lecteurs MP3, affich, pendant la lecture et pour chaque morceau, le titre du morceau, l’Artiste et l’Album. Notez que les modèles les

plus récents, et surtout ceux de grand format, peuvent afficher plus de caractères, et cela plus rapidement que les plus petits ou plus anciens modèles. Pourtant, tous les modèles iPod font afficher, pendant l’écoute, le titre du morceau sélectionné ou déjà en lecture. Avec iSpeak English, vous devriez voir, sur votre écran iPod, l’expression française suivie de l’expression anglaise. NB: Pour les raisons notées ci-dessus, il se peut que cette séquence n’apparaisse pas immédiatement sur l’écran de certains modèles de lecteur MP3.
L’affichage de paroles Si vous êtes en possession soit d’un nouveau modèle iPod (5Go, ou plus récent), soit d’un lecteur MP3 en mesure d’afficher les paroles des listes de lecture, vous allez pouvoir accéder au texte complet français-anglais, ainsi que vous informer sur le contenu des autres morceaux de l’album (la sous-catégorie). Pour accéder aux paroles (avec l’iPod 5Go, ou plus récent) suivez les étapes suivantes: 1. Sélectionnez un morceau. 2. Pendant la reproduction du morceau, cliquez deux fois sur la touche du centre. L’affichage de paroles donne, pour chaque morceau audio d’iSpeak English, le texte français suivi immédiatement du texte anglais. L’affichage de paroles donne aussi les autres mots et expressions du même album. Pour alléger vos moments d’étude, vous pourriez toujours parsemer vos listes de lecture personnelles de morceaux de musique, soit Billie Holiday, soit Coldplay. Vous pourriez, par exemple, créer une liste de lecture intelligente selon les critères suivants. L’iPod enregistre le nombre d’écoutes aussi bien que la séquence de votre écoute. Donc, on pourrait modifier la liste de lecture intelligente décrite ci-dessus en classant les morceaux par les moins écoutés, et en les limitant à ceux que vous avez écoutés au moins une fois. Classements L’iPod vous permet aussi de classer les morceaux par une échelle d’une à cinq étoiles. Vous pourriez par exemple classer les mots et expressions iSpeak par le niveau de vos connaissances: en donnant peut-être cinq étoiles aux termes que vous ne savez pas bien, et une ou deux étoiles à ceux que vous savez déjà. Vous pouvez ensuite utiliser les résultats de votre classement dans la création de nouvelles listes de lecture intelligentes. Par exemple, Genre contient Langue Artiste contient Conversation Classement est entre BBB et BBBBB Limiter à 50 éléments sélectionnés par classement maximum La liste de lecture intelligente décrite ci-dessus contiendra tous les morceaux puisés dans la catégorie Conversation (menu Artistes) que vous aurez classés entre trois et cinq étoiles. TIRER LE MAXIMUM DE VOTRE APPRENTISSAGE DE L’ANGLAIS Il vous faudra bien travailler lorsque vous utilisez les guides de conversation iSpeak sur votre iPod. Bien qu’il soit possible d’apprendre certains mots et expressions simplement à les entendre, c’est par une écoute active que vous apprendrez beaucoup plus et à fond. Nous vous suggérons d’écouter les morceaux de vos albums iSpeak si possible dans un contexte réel logique: recherchez, par exemple, les mots et expressions d’Achats tout en faisant vos achats, ou bien répétez les termes ayant rapport aux aliments et aux restaurants lorsque vous vous préparez à sortir dîner.
Écouter et répéter Chacun des morceaux (mots ou expressions) est répété deux fois en anglais. Répétez le morceau vous-même en anglais tout de suite après l’avoir écouté. Avant de l’écouter une deuxième fois, essayez de vous rappeler son sens. Vous entendrez aussi des phrases complètes en anglais qui utilisent ces termes. Répétez les phrases complètes après les avoir écoutées une première fois, en essayant de vous rappeler leur sens avant la deuxième écoute. Pour l’accomplir, n’hésitez pas à interrompre votre écoute ou à la faire répéter à volonté.

Mélanger la séquence des listes de lecture L’une des caractéristiques les plus remarquables des lecteurs numériques audio actuels, tels l’iPod, est la possibilité qu’ils nous donnent de changer à l’infini l’ordre des morceaux stockés, en lançant des listes de lecture personnelles ou intelligentes (voir la description ci-dessus). Profi tez-en! Créez des listes de lecture qui rassemblent des groupements particuliers de mots et d’expressions.
