Dedication A special thank you to Jeff H., who helped to inspire and invent one particularly naughty bit of Dante’s nightmare. As always, this story is dedicated to all my friends and family who support my unusual obsessions and everyday flights of fancy.

Chapter One Bryck stormed through the compound. What the hell was wrong with his unit? All of a sudden they seemed to have decided the base would make a prime vacation spot for mortals. His hand fisted over his chest and the pain welling up there. His magic needed released, but unfortunately no one was handy to kill. Shit. He entered his private office, slamming the door hard enough to crack the thick oak. Back and forth he paced across the small space in an effort to ease his built up tension. When a half a dozen passes did nothing, he summoned up the tychlas that Dyce had given him. The small metal balls jumped from his desk drawer and began an intricate dance in the air. The motion was supposed to demand his attention and allow a controlled release of his magic. What a load of bullshit. His magic only eased when he poured death into another being, which of course he couldn’t do without an assigned tasc. A tap at the door preceded a subtle burst of energy that repaired the cracked wood. Wyk, she would be coming to check on him. The smallest of his demons entered the room without fear. She alone was immune to his magic. Even her mate, Dyce, suffered when in his presence for too long. But not Wyk. She was his therapist, his judge and if needed, his executioner.
5
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Wyk materialized a plush pillow and then settled on top of it in the chair facing his desk. In her human, child‐like form she easily tucked her legs up to sit cross legged and backwards to watch him pace. The silence stretched out, while he thundered back and forth and the tiny silver balls whirled through the air. Only when Wyk continued to watch silently did he realize just how deep of shit he was in. Normally she would be hitting him with annoying questions about how he was feeling and what he thought he could do to stay balanced. The very fact that she sat and silently watched him said what? That it was too late? Was she about to blast his ass back to the hall of souls? There was no coming back from that kind of ass kicking. Shit. He was fucked. “You can chill. I’m in control.” She twirled a tassel on the side of the chair. “I can see that.” He sent the tychlas flying ever faster. He didn’t have to look up to know they’d each be drawing a trail of black death magic. Let them give him away. There was nothing to be done about it. Instead he focused on controlling his pacing, slowing it enough to at least be called a walk. “It just was a bit surprising to see strangers making themselves comfortable within our ranks.” “Only two humans.” “Three. Mayce and Spyce have a vampire they intend to bring home to meet the family. Can you believe it? A fucking vampire! How am I supposed to keep the group cohesive with missing members, humans living with us, and a vampire to muck with all our heads?” She stopped toying with the chair and instead rested her chin calmly on the back and blinked her impossibly large eyes up at him. “What would you have different?” Everything. And nothing. He continued to pace but refused to speak when he had no answers for her. “Should they send their mates away?” Wyk asked evenly. “Of course not.” His feet turned to cement. “Are they mated? I didn’t believe it had gone so deeply.” She smiled. “They are or soon will be.”
6
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon “I see and I imagine Mayce and Spyce would not bring this Dante back here for anything less.” He forced the air from his lungs. Tripping over the humans wasn’t really the problem. It was only the trigger. “Now you are in control.” Wyk shifted and swung one leg idly as if she didn’t have a care in the world. “What did Mayce have to report regarding the search for Flayvor?” He stared at her. Damned if the little demon wasn’t right. His magic was still ramped up, but it had settled enough that at least it wasn’t whipping around him, dangerous to anyone within ten feet. “I am to meet Mayce at dusk. His vampire will be setting up some rendezvous with a woman named Maya.” “Only a few more hours then.” Yeah, only six more hours. How many trips across the room would he make in that time? A few hundred thousand at least. Or he could try to find something useful to do with his time…like kill someone. He only had one assigned tasc, the hunting of Rynix. He could go after him and maybe even kill the bastard in six hours. That would certainly improve his mood. “Watch our flock. I’m going after Rynix.” Wyk nodded and said nothing while he dematerialized back to hell. He focused his arrival to appear near the home belonging to Rayce and Chayse’s parents. The Cyvampis couple had also been the ones to take him in and raise him. At least they had tried and for that he’d always be grateful. The small home was built back into a stone wall around a large central garden shared by more than a dozen families. For most, this little community within the large realm was an ideal place for a settled family unit to live and raise their children. For him it had just been hell. All the other demons, many of which had reclaimed their souls, added to the daily stress he’d faced growing up. Controlling his death magic was hard enough now, but in his youth it had been nearly impossible. No child should be expected to have that kind of restraint. The whole point in childhood and youth was the ability to let go and be a little
7
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon wild. If he’d done that many innocent demons would have died and he would have been executed. Instead he had struggled every day to maintain a balance. Gamyn and Dorys had done the best they could. But they’d known what he was and never could see past their fear. Rynix and his brother, Ravyn, had been another of their charity cases. When the twins had been orphaned young, Dorys had opened her home and welcomed them in as family. Although grown, they had spent much of their time there between assignments. If the rogue demon maintained any contact within the community, then Dorys and Gamyn would know about it. Bryck forced himself forward to knock on the door even though, as a higher ranking demon on an assigned hunt, he didn’t technically have to use any manners. Before the door could open, a swirl of energy announced another demon materializing behind him. Spinning, he expected to face Rynix in some ambush. Instead he found himself facing Lord Pahele, the leader of their people. “Commander Bryck, please follow me.” Lord Pahele walked slowly toward the center of the garden area. Although their realm was subterranean and maintained a constant light level similar to dusk, the native plants thrived on the ambient magic given off by the demon population. They stopped near a large fountain where the vines of Silbyn were in full bloom. Several Koyaesh fish swam over to be social as if they remembered the thousands of hours he’d spent here. Bryck stared down into the water, afraid to make eye contact with his lord. There were only a few reasons for Pahele to come for him. Either Wyk had asked that he be tasced or Pahele himself had judged him unworthy. “You worry too much, Bryck. I’m not here to tasc you.” Pahele materialized some pellets for the Koyaesh and scattered them over the
8
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon surface. “I’m here because your magic concerned Dorys as much as it always has.” Well, shit. “I didn’t wish to cause them any problems. There is reason to believe that the rogue, Rynix, will make contact with them.” But he wouldn’t be the only one to know that. They were protecting Rynix. “Yes, your adoptive family intended to use your father as a distraction which they will have to answer for soon enough. I came instead. For now, you will return and watch over their home without announcing your presence.” “My father wouldn’t come?” Why did that not surprise him? He hadn’t actually seen the old man in person since he was a child. Even then it had only been from a distance. The bastard hadn’t even had the balls to show up when he’d been given command of the Anom’tan unit. “Eios has other responsibilities.” “Yet, you, Lord, do not?” In a heartbeat, Bryck found himself on the hard stone floor, bent low, forced into submission. “You will not question me. I came to see you myself as there is some concern over your stability. I see now that concern is justified.” “Pardon my insult, my Lord.” Bryck forced his body to remain where it was, fighting against the nearly overwhelming impulse to release his magic and be damned for the consequences. “Maintaining the balance has become more difficult. I fear those concerned have reason to be.” The lord’s hand came down on his shoulder and instantly, the magic calmed, filling him with peace and tranquility. “Fortunately you may soon find a reprieve. Now see to your duty.” Then Pahele was gone and Bryck sensed the evil that was Rynix. He’d gotten his wish. The fight was now, and he didn’t even have to go looking for it.

Chapter Two Maya needed to kill someone or at the very least needed someone to die for her, which in the grand scheme of things often were the same. She opened her other sense, letting it spread like tendrils creeping into the many rooms throughout the Trinity complex. There were eighteen mortals and three demons—no four demons. One of the life forces was so weak she could barely sense him. She picked up her cane and let it guide her with its light taps along the floor. She knew the building well and within a few minutes she passed through the main areas to the secret passage leading to the rooms below the church. She waited until her psychic sense, the only one she had full use of, told her that no one was near, then she opened the hidden door and slipped out of sight. She couldn’t rely on her sight or hearing or even her sense of touch or smell. Hell, even her ability to taste was dulled, not that she planned on licking the walls but it would have been nice to have some clear connection with the world. As it was, she’d have to settle for a vague psychic link that allowed her to feel life forces. She used that ability to track the fading life which she was slowly beginning to recognize with a terrible sense of certainty. By the time she found the stone room and unlocked the thick door, she knew the dying life was her fault. The demon was here because of her. He was dying because of her. And the presence of a certain other demon within this house of
10
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon God told her something else. The dying demon was not about to be rescued. The strongest of the other demons was the one she’d stolen this one from not a day ago. And now that she was once more weakened by her curse, she had no way to protect him or the monks who sheltered them. She made her way to the demon and found him bound to a wall. She could tell little except that he was dying and wouldn’t last more than an hour more without help. But why was he here like this at all? The brothers had offered to care for him, help him and yet here the demon was tortured and dying. They’d lied. As if to confirm her suspicions, a monk approached. She sensed his arrival and allowed her body to fade back into a corner of the room into invisibility. She focused her mind tightly, forcing it to obey her and open itself to the thoughts of the monk. Thank God this one is almost dead. One less demon spawn on this earth, one less to torment humanity. If only we did not have to deal with the others, then our mission would be far cleaner, holier. But without the creature, Rynix, then we would not have those he delivers. She’d heard enough. Rynix had tricked her. Pulled a Bre’r Rabbit and she hadn’t been smart enough to catch him at it. Instead, she’d brought their victim right where they’d planned all along. How long had Rynix been working with the monks? How many demons had they killed? Such murders were pointless when all the Tascryn demons did was hold to a duty they had no choice in. The useless sacrifice of blood and lives reminded her of the long gone days she’d spent in the Mayan temples of her people. Their sacrifices had been too numerous to count… She’d hated it in the beginning when she was human, but in the end, before she’d finally left her people, things had been different. She’d turned the old ways to her benefit, and convinced the holy men to make their sacrifices in her name. She’d been so young and so very stupid. Anger welled up in her, begging to be let out. This wasn’t about her past crimes. Right now she needed to right the current wrong. If she
11
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon saved the demon she’d accidentally condemned, then it would be one less black mark on her soul. She needed her senses. And lucky for her it was almost sundown. She waited for the monk to leave before moving to the demon’s side. She pressed a hand to his chest and poured a little bit of life back into him, just enough to offer the demon some time. In that moment even her psychic touch faded. She became something that wasn’t there, something that wasn’t a part of this world. She crept slowly back upstairs, praying forgotten prayers that no one witnessed her passing. Only her perfect memory allowed her to travel the four blocks to Club Sundown, only her desperation felt the sun dip below the horizon. She tapped her way to the open door and then inside, pressing her back to the wall and waiting for her contact to arrive and offer her what she needed. The fading of her senses left her feeling helpless, something she hated more than anyone could ever guess. She might not be helpless, but not being able to see the room, hear the voices, or judge the dangers was quietly terrifying. Then the unexpected happened…her senses began to improve and she heard Dante say, “She’s here.” Dante, who she’d happily saved five years before. She’d killed for him and done him no favors. But there was a different quality to the thoughts behind his words, a satisfaction and contentment that had been lacking for all the time she’d known him. “So where is this girl? I can hardly fucking wait to meet her.” The words were snarled by a stranger. She felt for his mind and felt nothing but darkness. He was a demon, but what sort? The longer she focused on him the more real the world became around her. She felt the bite of the wall against her back and the floor beneath her bare feet. The cane in her hand came to life with its smooth grip and the firm way the tip sat on the floor. The subtle sounds of people moving and the scent of blood… not human, but spicy demon blood, was so dark and deep she could almost taste it. Sight? If she opened her eyes, would she see the world with all its
12
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon light and shadow? Would it be gray and washed out or vivid and blinding? Would it hurt as much as it had in the past, to see and then know the gift would be taken away so quickly? She kept her eyes closed. The question remained, why were her senses improving? She had yet to meet her contact or take his offering. She should have remained trapped in her living shadow. “Where is she, Dante?” the dark demon growled. “She’ll come when she’s ready. Her dealer will be here any second. She’ll meet him.” They were talking about her. Why wasn’t she surprised? There wasn’t much point in delaying any longer. She stepped forward, revealing herself to them.

Chapter Three “Hello, Dante.” Bryck didn’t jump in surprise, because damn it, Daelyn don’t scare. And in his case, half Daelyn don’t scare much. Not that the woman standing in the entrance wasn’t odd. She was. She was perfectly odd. Her silver hair streamed around her, framing her light brown skin. The hair blended in, matching her white gown, some flowing muslin thing that looked almost as fragile as the girl herself. From her bare feet to her silver hair, the girl was frail and ghostly. And obviously blind. Dante glided forward and caught the girl’s hand. “Maya, I’ve someone I want you to meet.” Bryck watched as she pulled her hand back. Good. She didn’t seek out the vampire’s touch. At least she didn’t seek out his touch now. Had she ever? He bit back the growl that clawed at his throat. He had no right to even consider possessing such a fragile girl. He pushed aside the insane impulse and stomped up beside the vampire. “So this is the girl?” Her face turned his way and he could almost see her hackles rise. Her nose flared out just once before she adjusted the angle of her face to look directly at him even though her eyes remained closed. “I’m Maya. Who are you, demon?” Demon? How could she know? “You must see a hell of a lot better than it appears.”
14
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon She shrugged. “I usually see what I need to. Who are you and what do you want?” “What I want is my demon back. I’m told you can assist me, but now that we’ve met I begin to wonder how.” “But we have not yet met. Meeting requires a greeting. If it is as you say and you require my assistance, I would think you’d be somewhat more accommodating to my desire to have your name. As it is, I am beginning to consider you no better than the last demon I faced and that encounter ended with a demon dying. I ask again, for the last time. Might I know the name of this demon, who I face, who I do not know, who has come to ask for my aid?” “Maya?” a human male asked quietly from the open door. “Have I come at a bad time?” “Ricky.” The relief and pleasure in her voice twisted inside Bryck’s gut. She turned her back on him to make her way toward the human, moving slowly and with great care. She wanted this human, when her only reaction to him was one of outrage. And why did that knowledge bring his already rising anger to a boil? Why did it make him want to rip the human into small bite sized pieces? “Thank the gods you came. I was afraid that you would skip this week when I found the place had been attacked.” “I know how much you need …my product.” Her hand closed around the human’s elbow and she leaned in close enough for her small body to brush against his side. Bryck’s vision darkened. “Fuck this! We don’t have time for your dealer to make a delivery.” He grabbed her shoulder, spinning her back around to face him. The skin‐to‐skin contact sizzled through his veins, setting his body on fire. His iron control over his powers melted, evaporated, leaving his darkness surging outward without restraint. Her eyes opened with a flash of pure white light. Her energy met his with an explosion of power, throwing them both into the unknown. For a heartbeat the world roared. The lights and windows shattered. Tables and people were shoved away by the outward force. Lightning
15
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon streaked from the night sky, pounding the street outside the club. Then just as suddenly as the world had gone to hell, it all settled into a deep well of silence. “Well, shit.” He dropped his hand away from her. “You can say that again.” The white light of her eyes faded, revealing soft brown irises. She blinked up at him as if seeing him for the first time and considering the fact that she had appeared blind, it probably was for the first time. “Don’t leave. I have to take care of my unit.” Regret bit him deep. His people were tossed raggedly like broken dolls. He lifted Spyce from the rubble first. She was unconscious but seemed unhurt otherwise. He’d seen this reaction before and knew they would wake up within an hour or so, once his magic wore off. But until then, they’d be helpless and needed someone here while he tracked Flayvor. “Will they be okay?” “Yes.” He flipped out his cell and called the compound. When Dyce answered, he explained what happened and that the unit was needed at Club Sundown immediately. Once he’d hung up, Bryck moved to Mayce and the vampire, moving them both to the clear spot beside Spyce. Maya knelt beside the female demon, gently stroking her spiky red hair. “Have you ever had that happen before?” “Yes, but never that powerfully, which brings up a question. What are you?” He turned on the suddenly silent Maya. “You know I’m a demon. I have hidden nothing from you. I expect equal honesty.” “I have told you no lies. I have no reason to attempt deception.” She moved back to where her dealer lay in a broken heap. Although she seemed unaffected by the man’s serious injuries, she lifted a piece of broken jar from the bloody spill beside him. “I needed this very badly when I came through the club’s door. Here it is broken and wasted, and yet my body is whole and strong. I can’t explain it.” “What…” He started to ask then caught the unmistakable scent. “Vampire blood? What possible use could you have for that foul blood?” She looked over her shoulder at him. She blinked several times and
16
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon then sighed heavily. “I feed on it. Without the dead blood I gradually lose the use of all my senses.” She wiped at her eyes. “I have been blind for almost five years now. It is always the hardest sense to recover. But one burst of your energy gave me a brief gift of sight.” She straightened the human’s broken leg and healed it with short burst of power. Then she stood and walked slowly, carefully back to where her cane rested near the entrance. “You must be a death demon. It is the only answer that I can think of.” “My father is one of the three.” There was no point in denying it. He might not truly be a full death demon but he was close enough. “You still have not answered my question.” And it was starting to become irritating. “Most people fear me enough to obey instantly.” She met his gaze. Her eyes were no longer the rich brown. A white film obscured the color and left her eyes dull. “I am not most people.” “I can see that.” Her lips quirked upward. “I am human, or at least I once was. Now I am a death eater, cursed to live on the deaths of others.” She glided toward him, lifting a hand and letting it hover over his bicep. “I wonder…” She shook her head slightly and dropped her hand. “The vampire claimed you know where Flayvor was taken. If you do, I’d have you show me.” “Dante is a good soul.” “Vampires don’t have souls,” he growled. “Perhaps not, but that does not change the quality of being he strives to achieve. What is it that you resent the soulless for?” He would not be answering that question. She didn’t need to know how hard life continued to be for him, because of his soul, how it was a curse for him to be blessed with a soul. He would have been so much better off if his father had allowed him to be like other, lesser demons instead of demanding he claim the burden of his soul. His soul could have been kept safe in the Hall of Souls with those of the other Tascryn. That would have allowed him to complete his tasking duties without risk or strain. Not to mention without this horrible guilt. “Ah, I see.” “The rest of my unit will be here any second to take care of
17
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon this…accident. The moment they arrive you will take me to my missing demon.” “I will?” “Yes, you will. I demand you take me to Flayvor.” “Demand?” Her voice was curiously sweet, almost compliant. The look in her milky eyes put him on edge. The lives of his demons depended on her help and he wasn’t about to offer her a choice in the matter. “I’m afraid I don’t do well with bossy men. It just brings out my angry side which you do not want to see.”

Chapter Four Maya smiled inwardly as the circling black power tightened around the demon. She fully intended to help rescue his demon, but first she needed to know him, and understand how his power reacted with hers. Going into any risky situation until she did was completely out of the question. And pushing his buttons was just plain fun, something she had too little of in her life. Bryck towered over her, crowding into her personal space. “You will do as I command. I won’t let your games put my demons in further danger.” He was pissed. Perfect. Under the guise of needing space, she pushed her hands lightly against the thick muscling of his chest. The power surge was instantaneous, rushing through her body, bringing every cell to life. Her eyesight came back in a single blink. Her other senses regained that stunning sharpness. It confirmed her theory. Being near him helped some, but touching the death demon negated her curse immediately. Of course it also had a few side effects, such as her body wanting more, wanting to rejoice in life, with the basest of emotions, raw sex. The tight yearning was something she hadn’t felt in a long while. Not since the long gone days when she’d experimented with sex magic hoping it could break her curse. “Your eyes…?” “Your death magic feeds my curse and alleviates the blindness.”
19
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon He looked down at where her hands still rested on his chest. She should pull back, but in truth the contact was more than soothing or even exciting. It was addicting. The smooth fabric of his shirt did little to separate them and yet…she was tempted to slip her hands through the buttonless center to connect with his skin. “What happened to your shirt?” For a long moment she thought he wouldn’t answer. Then his voice rumbled up from under her hands. “It was torn when I transformed.” “You shifted forms here?” “No, in hell while hunting Rynix.” The low growl was too much. She gave in to temptation. Her fingertips connected first and then her palms slid cautiously over his smooth skin. Her nerves jumped in anticipation. She vividly imagined crawling up his body and using him for all he was worth. His body, his mind, his magic. They would all be hers. “Shit!” Four strange demons clustered at the open door. The one who’d exclaimed pushed forward saying, “The place is wrecked, Bryck.” The demon’s hands, Bryck’s hands, closed around her wrists. She heard his thought, Later, clearly and knew the time would come when they would have the chance to explore their attraction. But that time was not now. “What in the name of Pahele’s big black ass happened here?” the other demon standing at the door asked. “Shut up, Rayce,” Bryck growled. “Just get in here and make yourself useful.” The demon in question immediately grew serious. “Yes, Commander. What needs done?” A small demon squeezed past the blood demons. Maya recognized the energy as that of a dream demon but, for all outward appearance, the little one appeared like a human child. This was the first dream demon she’d ever seen who didn’t seem uncomfortable in the mortal realm. Usually they only sought out humans in dreams so they never had to cross the planes of existence. Bryck released one of her hands but kept a firm hold on her other
20
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon wrist as if he were leashing a wayward animal. She’d have shaken him off but she was too entranced by watching him command his legion. He growled out orders to the two blood demons but curiously left the dream demon to her own devices. Perhaps this was not as she thought. There was no logic in their balance of power. Bryck was a death demon and commanded enough energy to utterly destroy even the most powerful dream demon. Why then did he act so deferential to this one? Maya studied the little one as she moved among the injured. A nearly forgotten memory fluttered to life in the back of her mind. The dream demon felt familiar, as if she’d encountered this one some time long ago. Physically, she was small and appeared child‐like, but Maya knew how deceiving that could be. The little one’s hands fluttered over one of the fallen demons. She only had to glance backward and the second blood demon joined her. “Chayse, please check out those rooms and see if there are any more comfortable places to rest them while we wait.” The blood demon jumped at her bidding, moving immediately to do as he was asked. “Commander?” the dream demon called. “What is it, Wyk?” “You should be going,” she said. “I’ll see that they are taken care of. Meanwhile, you and Maya can see to saving Flayvor.” Bryck nodded. And she had to agree. There wasn’t much she could do to help the fallen demons. Nothing in fact that their own brethren wouldn’t be able to do. Bryck kept her hand and turned toward the door. “We’ll go. Watch over everything.” When they made it to the door, he added, “Rayce, if I need backup, I’ll call you, so keep your damn phone on.” “Right, Commander.” Then they were out the door with him still firmly in the lead. She marveled at his strength and control and laughed while he
21
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon continued to storm down the sidewalk. After almost a block she baulked. “You can drag me all over the place, for just as long as you want, but I am wondering if you will ever ask me where we’re going.” She smiled as his feet came to a stop. “Well, tell me where Flayvor is.” “Have you ever heard the word please?” He turned on her. His big hands closed around her arms and lifted her into the air and slammed her lightly, but firmly against the wall of a building. “No more games!” Maybe she’d pushed him too far. His whole body vibrated with deep emotion. Translated to magic, all that power flowed into her and left her more than a little giddy. “Don’t you fucking get it? I can feel the demons under my command. I can feel Flayvor dying with every second we waste. The life of a demon or two may mean nothing to you, but they are my responsibility and I will do anything it takes to save them.” His eyes were solid black. The glossy reflection of her image in their depths was almost hypnotic. His power and strength wrecked havoc with her body, making focusing on his words nearly impossible. But under all the motion and blunt words, his mind was open and raw to her. As imposing as he was, what drove him was a deep, black terror. Fear of failure and loss so powerful that when the emotion hit her, she gasped in surprise and a reflection of that agony. As quickly as his mind had opened, it slammed shut once more. But there was no going back. She knew the truth and was changed by it. “I’m not afraid of you, but I was wrong.” She’d been so caught up in the return of her senses that she’d forgotten the urgency that had driven her rush to the club to begin with. She’d forgotten the demon she’d been planning to save, but she remembered him and his desperate need now. She wasn’t about to abandon him again. Her feet returned to the ground. “I knew how badly he needed you and still I delayed. I will take you to him now.”

Chapter Five Horror flowed over Bryck. His rage had been completely freed. He could have killed the girl, in fact, it should have killed her. Yet, if anything, she looked more beautiful than ever. “Where is he?” Why aren’t you dead? Her rich brown eyes softened. “I’ll take you there.” With one hand, she pulled his fingers off her arm. But instead of jerking away from him in fear, she slid that hand down to tangle through his fingers. “Come on, Commander.” I’ll explain on the way. Holy fuck. She could hear his thoughts and he hers. She turned the way they’d come and led him back past Club Sundown. I’m not sure how well we can communicate this way. Can you hear me? Of course he could hear her. The girl’s silky voice slipped through his mind like a caress. The thoughts ran roughshod over his senses, so rich he could almost taste the silent sound. I know you responded, but I will only hear what you direct toward me. To me it has always been a blessing to keep back a part of my mind. With as strong a mind as you have, that should not be a problem. How far is it to where Flayvor is being held? Bryck kept pace with the girl…Maya easily. Sheer height alone offered him one stride for every two of hers. Not far, only a couple blocks. I am sorry. I didn’t mean to delay his rescue. I intended to take him from the monks on my own after I’d fed.

Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Why did you have to feed first? He devoured her appearance from the top of her thick silver hair to the bottoms of her fast moving bare feet. Did you remember how I looked before our little outburst? I gradually lose my senses between feedings. I knew I’d need them to get your demon free. She continued to lead him down the street. Her steps were steady and fleet. She didn’t look ill. She looked delectably well from every angle. Why would you help Flayvor? Her step faltered then picked up once again. I care about others. Why shouldn’t I try to help someone in need? When I tricked Rynix into taking your demon to the monastery, I believed he would be safe there, just as I have been. “Wait.” He pulled her to a stop. “There is no monastery in this part of the city. Are you sure that’s where he is being held?” “I’m sure.” She squeezed his hand. Trust me. I have lived at the monastery for years. I know every soul and every corner. He was there in the deeper secret rooms below. I thought he would be in one of the guest rooms recovering from his minor injuries and instead they chained him below like an animal. The second I knew of their mistreatment, I began plans to free him. He had no reason to trust her. He trusted almost no one, not even himself. Yet, he found that he wanted to believe Maya. And maybe he would if she could answer one more question. Why aren’t you dead? She laughed. I did promise to explain, didn’t I? Very well. I am not dead because your magic, death magic, is what sustains my life force. Basically the more dangerous you are to others, the better I’ll like you. Your first little outburst back at the club was the best feeding I’ve had in years. After that, I had no use for that spilled vampire blood I had intended to drink. Vampire blood? How can you stomach the shit? Out of necessity I assure you. I gave up killing five years ago. The Fathers of Trinity were the ones who theorized that my soul was damaged more with every kill. Now I wonder if they were right or perhaps completely full of shit. Her thought froze his already pissed off soul. The Fathers of Trinity are rarely good news. They had a tendency to hunt demons when their original purpose had been to help police the ranks and hunt only the rogue demons. Somewhere in history the distinction had been lost. The monks have been kind to me.
24
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon You aren’t a demon. More privately he considered how badly they had treated Maya. They had tricked her into starving herself and for what purpose? On the other hand, if she could absorb his magic so easily, how many had she killed to find satisfaction? It was wrong and might be considered evil, but also sexy as hell. We’re here. She stopped outside an old building. The thick stone walls reminded him of those used to build many older churches, but the design of the building was square and squat. It was no more than maybe two stories high and the many windows were covered with plain blinds. You said he’s here, in the basement? I can hardly sense him. Maya’s expression was grim. His life force is very faint. “Shit.” He started forward again, getting to the door before realizing that Maya was still holding his hand and was doing her best to act as an anchor. “I’m going in there.” “Fine, but you should know they probably won’t give him up without a fight.” “Good. I love to fight.” He didn’t bother to knock, just threw his magic at the doors, smashing them open and for once he didn’t care too much who might be hit by the waves of death.

Chapter Six Maya couldn’t help but grin at the demon’s straight on attack. The logic was perfect and clear and about as uncomplicated as it got. His man was in there and he was going in to get him. Honest and easy, and very well might fail. She’d been inside Bryck’s mind. She knew just how important this rescue was to him and she would be there at his side to help however she could. She entered right behind him and was not surprised at the lack of a greeting party. The only sign of life at all was the fast retreating back of one of the monks, Father George, she thought. Wait, Bryck. Fuck waiting. Can’t you feel it? Bryck rushed forward with enough speed she had trouble keeping up. She knew what he meant. The trapped demon was almost out of time. But there were details he needed to know. Listen to me while you chase down the monks then. The monks will not give up your demon when you ask. When they believe in their decisions, they are obstinate and vigorous in their defense. Don’t underestimate their deviousness. I won’t. I have dealt with the Fathers of Trinity before. I know what they are capable of and I am through chasing them down dark corridors. How do we get downstairs? This way. She led him to the hidden doorway. It was locked of course. She pushed her magic into the mechanism and forced it to give way to her wishes. A soft click told her it was free but she hesitated to
26
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon push it open. Hurry up. Hurrying would be bad. Bryck pulled her against his chest and gave the door a hard shove with his shoulder. The door gave way and swung inward. A series of snaps confirmed Maya’s fears. It was booby‐trapped with who knew what. Bryck grunted and carried her forward. What happened? Sneaky bastards trapped the door, but you knew that. They used darts. I have a few in my back now. WHAT? Stop so I can pull them out! No time. We have to get to Flayvor. He continued to carry her down the stairs, heedless of her slight wiggling. Bryck? There are people ahead of us. With her senses at full strength, she scanned out ahead and identified twelve humans. Only a few felt familiar like the monks would. There are humans but I don’t know who they are. Who they are doesn’t really matter, does it? I’m out of practice when it comes to killing. I’m not sure I want to change that fact. The truth was she actually felt better about not hunting the living to feed her curse. Even in the past century when she had mostly hunted from the dregs of society. Even those left her feeling hollow enough to drive her to the starvation diet she’d chosen. Then I can see to any killing that needs done. He settled her to the ground. The cold stone was a shock that made her yearn for his warm arms again. Being carried around should have made her feel like a child but if anything it left her warm and feeling more feminine than she had in centuries. There were other duties to see to first though. Then she intended to see just how feminine she could feel pressed against his heat. He charged forward and they turned the last corner almost mowing down a solid man wearing an old style monk robe. The plain harsh cloth, over the thick body, left Maya fondly remembering her mortal days among the Mayan holy men. Their
27
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon loincloths and elaborate headdresses were so colorful and proud, unlike these men. Not to mention they were often handsome and well built as well. “Father Henry, I’ve found the family of the one I brought to you for sanctuary. The burden of his care can go to its rightful place.” Maya wasn’t the least bit surprised when the monk held his place and ignored her attempt at civility. “You’ve brought the devil to our house.” Father Henry lifted an ancient cross and thrust it forward at Bryck. Maya wasn’t sure what exactly to expect, but Bryck laughing wasn’t it. His deep growling laughter rolled out until the monk shrank back in horror. “The devil!” Bryck’s laugh settled into a low vibration echoing through the stone. “I’m not the devil, but I am my father’s son and he has been called that and worse.” Bryck grabbed the front of the monk’s robes and lifted him clear off the ground. “I’ve come for my brethren. I will leave here with him. The only choice you have is if you and your brothers will still be breathing when I leave.” Father Henry held up his cross in a vain attempt to ward off Bryck’s advance. The poor father didn’t realize the engraved triquetta would only be harmful to soulless beings. Bryck, however, would know. “As if the Creator’s cross could harm me,” he growled. “This is the house of the Lord. Your demon‐kind are not welcome here.” Bryck snatched the cross from Father Henry and dropped the monk to the floor. “You should have considered that before imprisoning my demon in your Lord’s basement.” He causally tossed the cross onto a nearby table and reached back toward her, his hand open and welcoming. Maya’s hand slid into his, flooding her body with heat. His mind was open and filled with unexpected gratitude. She didn’t understand it and had to ask, What’s wrong? Although the pleasure in his mind didn’t indicate wrongness at all, but rather that something was very right. The priest lives and I have you to thank for the sparing of the man’s life.
28
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon I don’t understand. My emotions of any strength have always proved deadly to those around me and yet that man is still alive. Not that I give a flying fuck about his life, but the control you offer me is precious. “Guards! Stop them!” Father Henry screamed from behind them. “They’ve never had guards before…” Maya’s words trailed off as men ran toward them from down the short hallway. They were armed to the teeth and by the looks of things were more than willing to use the weapons even in a house of God. “Halt or we’ll shoot!” Another monk joined the soldiers. “Fire! They deserve no warning!”

Chapter Seven “Bryck?” Maya asked hesitantly. She’d been shot a few times over her long life but never by firepower like this. Will you survive this? I’m not sure I will. His mental chuckle tickled at her mind until she was smiling too, matching his arrogant lopsided grin. Relax, I think it may be time to get serious. Dark sexy power condensed around him, like tendrils of living smoke. It swirled around him affectionately, even brushing over Maya with light caresses of energy. Then the magic tightened, becoming Bryck, and he becoming it. The magic burst through her, too, dragging a gasp of pleasure from deep within. Death Magic. It is what I do best. Don’t be afraid. I’m about to shift forms. The faster I send them pissing themselves in fear, the sooner we can reach Flayvor. She nodded and squeezed his hand. She’d seen demons in the demonic forms before. There was nothing he could do that could make her fear him. A pulse grew deep in the floor and built through all the stone around them. It vibrated, rocking wildly, buckling the floor under the soldiers. One of the men fired the first shot. The other followed. The black power spun around Bryck, this time obscuring his huge frame for a heartbeat, maybe less. The energy surged outward like a tidal wave driven by hurricane winds. It floored the men, stilling their shots.
30
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Amazingly the wave did no more than caress Maya, while it tore violently at all the others. Then her hand held nothing but smoke. Bryck’s body exploded outward just as his power had. Before she could do more than gasp in surprise, he was once more solid—huge, winged, black scaled, flaming eyed, roaring with open fangs solid. His body filled the corridor but Maya was happy to fall back and give him room to pursue the armed men as they fled. In her mind she was torn back to a former life, a life of a mortal princess named Mia before it all went wrong, before her nightmare reality ended in all the wrong choices. She pressed her back to the monastery wall, pinched her eyes closed and prayed desperately to shut out the memory, the horror of her husband. Mia dared to cut her gaze upward to see the man to whom she was to be given. But what stood before her was no man. It was Quatzicoatal, the feathered Serpent. The great beast towered over her. His red eyes filled a scaled face, angled to look at her from one giant glowing orb. She had become a sacrifice to a god. Her family offered her life in exchange for favor in the coming war. She’d been sold to a monster. Surely her life was at an end. Her hands knotted before her. She blinked hard and could do nothing to stop the wash of tears. She knew her place. This was her duty to her family, to her people, but it was too much to ask. Duty and responsibility did not slow her fleeing feet. Her father barked commands to his men and, moments later, she was caught in cruel arms and dragged back before the monster who was her new husband. Her father stepped before her, back‐handing her silently for her lack of courage. Her hands were bound tightly, painfully, behind her back. A whip came out to issue punishment but all motion came to a halt when the god growled. It was his favor they all desired. A single rumble, a sign of obvious displeasure would not be overlooked. The creature’s glowing eye, nearly as wide across as she was tall, angled closer. The guards and even her father fell back, giving way to the enormous beast. She would have fled again if not for the long spear at her back forcing her to
31
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon remain quivering in front of Quatzicoatal. He stared at her long and deep as if he could read the fear in her heart and the sadness of her soul. His head tilted and then withdrew. Before she could contemplate potential freedom, the beast swept a long clawed hand forward, capturing her and leaping away into flight. “Maya!” She forced her eyes open, dreading the vision of another scaled monster, but Bryck stood before her in his human form. His shirt and jeans were in tatters. His skin was whole even though he had surely been hit by a dozen or more bullets. Unerringly her hand rose to his chest, wanting to confirm his safety. But he wasn’t as she’d thought. He was a monster. Her hand dropped back to her side. His eyes filled with pain. I’m sorry, Maya. We have to go. He reached for her hand, but at her soft mew of fear, he drew back. Stay here or come with me, but Flayvor is out of time. I have to go to him now. She managed a nod and followed as he strode quickly through the shadowed corridors to the small room where his demon hung, still chained to the wall.

Chapter Eight The door disintegrated as Bryck entered the room. With every second, he felt the life fading from Flayvor. He felt the stuttering beat of his heart and the subtle grief in his mind. Easy boy, you’re not gone yet. You’ll be back in your brother’s arms in no time. Halfway across the room, he was attacked. Two blood demons hit him hard, throwing him back against the wall. One ripped through him with a scytari, one of the few weapons that could rend his flesh. The pain bit deep and Bryck couldn’t help but bite back. He tore into the throat of one, not bothering to do more than rip the flesh open. The second bite severed the demon’s neck, dropping the dead flesh to the floor. The knife sank again and again, until Bryck’s black blood flowed. His vision narrowed until all he saw was white light. Not white light, Maya’s flaring eyes. She perched on the second demon’s slouched body, feeding. Her hair flew around her, a maelstrom of whipping power. Fucking beautiful. Her white gaze lifted to meet his and she flooded him with energy. Her feeding had been for him. She gave and gave, sagging when he felt stronger than ever. Then Rynix grabbed her by her long hair, dragging her back as a not‐so‐human shield. “Damn you. Damn you all. You’ve ruined everything!” The crazy demon ranted nonsense. “Your sanction was given to me, Rynix. It’s my duty and pleasure
33
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon to ruin your day.” He moved a step forward to get free of the tangled bodies at his feet. “I really don’t have time to fuck with you now. If you run, I probably won’t come after you today.” But the demon’s mind was cracked. There was no reasoning with him. Rynix’s eyes widened and his knife‐wielding hand tightened at Maya’s throat, cutting a fine line across her golden brown skin. “Why won’t you die?” There was a plaintive whine to his voice. “It’s not my turn.” He didn’t waste any more time arguing with a demon lost to the soul madness. That was the problem here. Somehow, Rynix had reclaimed his soul and unfortunately he was too weak to control it. He had to die. Bryck focused on one point, and poured his power into one thought. Death flowed like a river, filling Rynix and flooding outward, driving the life from the insane demon, washing him clean and returning his broken soul to the arms of the creator. The empty shell collapsed, freeing Maya. For a moment she froze. Then she dropped forward to her knees. Her arms came up protectively around her head. He was at her side, dragging her back to her feet and cradling her tight against his body before he even considered another breath apart. “What is it? What’s wrong?” He’d assumed that any overflow of his powers would be no danger to her. Was he wrong? What if he’d hurt her? Wild fear burned through him. Dear Creator, what have I done? Her hands closed on his face. Her face turned up to his, her eyes blinding white beams of light. “No more.” He crushed her in his embrace. “I’m so sorry.” “Calm yourself, dammit. Get control before I melt down like nuclear plant run by monkeys. Just calm down and give me a minute.” Bryck gathered his power back, binding even the tendrils that he usually allowed free reign. If he ever had control, now was the time to show it, to prove it. Gradually their hearts slowed to one slow rhythm. Her hands eased on him, petting him reassuringly. Then she drew back, forcing his arms to loosen when he’d rather hold her tight forever.
34
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon When she met his gaze again, her eyes were bright, but brown and glittering. “Now we need to see to your demon.” “Oh shit.” He’d forgotten Flayvor. How could he have forgotten his responsibility? How could he have abandoned him when it mattered most? “Stop it, Bryck. You haven’t abandoned him. Even you have to admit we’ve been a little busy.” They both hurried to Flayvor’s side. Her hands beat his to touch the demon. Her face stilled. Her body language said everything she didn’t. They were too late.

Chapter Nine “Flayvor…” The despair in Bryck’s voice tore Maya apart. She caught his hand, clinging to him and offering what strength she could. When Bryck sagged to the floor, kneeling before his lost comrade, Maya let him go and began working on the chains holding the younger demon in place. Bryck would want to take him for whatever burial traditions they held to. She’d heard once that lost demons were laid to rest in the Hall of Souls. “Wait, Bryck. There is something wrong here.” Bryck looked up at her with eyes black as night. “Where is Flayvor’s soul? I felt it before and now… I can sense it, but not within his body.” “He was without a guide. His soul may not find its way.” This final cruelty pushed the demon commander to tears. A single black trail slid from his right eye. She wiped away the track from his cheek. “If his body is healed, will his soul return?” “Perhaps, if it has not completed the journey back to the Creator, it might.” Hope sparked in his eyes then dimmed at once. “But I know of nothing that can heal him or call back his soul.” She brushed her lips over his. “Perhaps I do.” “If it is possible, then we will do whatever it takes to save him.” “I believe it is possible. It’s still a pretty slim chance, but if I can gather enough power and keep the level at the right magical pitch, just maybe we can still save him. Get off your ass and call all your demons
36
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon and I do mean all. We’ll need everyone in your legion. Drag them here yourself if you need to, and tell them to bring their lovers if they have any.” “Fuckin’ lucky, that’s what that is. They have all found new love in the last few days.” “More lucky than you know. New love is the best. Call them all while I get an altar ready.” She didn’t bother to watch him making his calls or listen to his no‐nonsense way of commanding the demons. Instead she focused on all the elements that might help this unlikely chance succeed. She cleansed the room with fire, using it to burn the demons who’d ambushed them. In the early days of her curse, she’d studied sex magic in the hopes that it would counter the death eater curse. What she’d learned was the two powers were bound together but did counter each, as much as attract. It was a delicate balance but they could be combined to offer a kind of strength rarely needed. And they would need every drop of magic they could gather. To not only heal a body already into death but to tempt back a soul that has already moved on. She glanced at Bryck while he barked orders into the phone. He was counting on her. She wouldn’t fail him. She turned back to the room. One of her powers that she rarely used was the command over stone. She called out to the stone walls and demanded they give in to her will. With grinding complaint, the room expanded and shifted until the walls formed a circle with about a twenty foot diameter. She focused on the floor and called to it until it rose up, creating a low circular altar in the exact center of the room. The exertion ate away at her power until she could barely see the resulting changes to the stone. Bryck’s voice became little more than a murmur of sound, indistinguishable. She opened her mental senses and “heard” what Bryck was demanding of his unit. “I know that Dante is still recovering, but it doesn’t matter. Get your asses here.” After a brief pause, he growled, “Then I will come get him.” That offer apparently wasn’t welcomed. “I’m glad you understand the importance. Without everyone, we have little chance of bringing
37
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Flayvor back.” Bryck snapped the phone shut and then flipped it open to dial a new number. Before he’d had time to speak, Mayce and Spyce arrived with Dante held between them. The vampire looked bad. Damn. He should have anticipated the problem. Vampires never did well with death magic, since they were already filled with it. It looked like the room was ready. Maya had some serious power. Every burst of her magic sent a shiver over his skin. She turned his way and Bryck had to bite back a growl. Her magic might be impressive but it took a horrible toll on her physically. Maya’s face was drawn and her eyes were cloudy white. She’d said all her senses were lost… Something twisted in his gut. She suffered for his unit. He moved to her side while dialing the next number. “Wyk, are you on your way? Get Dyce too. I need the whole unit here five minutes ago.” “What about Sayvor?” Wyk asked. Bryck slid his hand into Maya’s and pushed his magic her way. This time she didn’t flinch from his touch. “I’m going for Sayvor myself.” He closed the phone connection and immediately called the next number. “I thought I told you to get your asses here.” “Coming, sir,” Chayse’s quiet voice answered. “What is the delay? Will it be your fuck up that costs your comrade his life?” “No, sir. We have Clarice and are coming there directly.” Bryck closed the phone. “Maya, I have to go get the last of my team. The rest should be arriving any second.” Her eyes were back to rich glistening brown. Her hand tightened slightly in his before releasing him. “Thank you.” “No sweat. Helps me to stay balanced. When they arrive, order them as needed. The blood demons are a couple hard asses, so if Rayce gives you any trouble, tell him I won’t kill him. That should get his attention.” Aloud she said nothing. Silently she whispered into his mind, Please hurry.
38
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon He didn’t bother to step back as was his habit. Unlike most, she wouldn’t be hurt by a burst of death magic. In a heartbeat he was back in the unit’s headquarters. The old warehouse was in unusual disarray. Usually Wyk kept it tidy and would blow her top if anyone left clutter about. The evidence of hasty exit eased a little of his worry. His team was scrambling just as they needed to. “Commander?” Sayvor said from the short hallway. “Rayce said Flayvor’s been found, but no one will tell me more.” The dark haired girl came up behind the Synn demon and slid one arm around his waist. Sayvor wrapped his arms around her but his gaze never left his leader’s face. “Is he…” His voice cracked. “I can’t feel him. Not at all.” “He is not well, but we still have a chance of bringing him back. I need you to be strong. Both of you will need courage for our plan to succeed.” Bryck turned his gaze on the girl. “What about you, Dr. Washington? Are you willing to help us recover Sayvor’s brother?” She stood up straighter, but kept hold of Sayvor’s hands. “I will.” “Then I need to take you both to him now.” He moved to them and placed a hand on each. He focused his magic to a pinnacle of control, using it to move them all through space, but leashing it tightly to keep it from harming either Sayvor or the human. Back in the stone room, he found all his demons had arrived. It was time to see if Maya could pull off the miracle she promised.

Chapter Ten Maya let out a sigh when Bryck returned. Saving the demon grew less likely with every passing second. The sooner they began, the better chance they had of timing the finale. “Bryck, we need to begin.” Bryck nodded and waved all the others closer. They clustered loosely around where Sayvor leaned over his brother. His grief was silent. “Maya here knows a ceremony that can bring Flayvor back to us. If all goes as planned, he will walk beside us under the coming sunrise.” Now it was time to confess her sins. “I know this ceremony can work. I feel all the elements of success close at hand, but I need your help to put them together to make this complex ritual a success.” There were nods of agreement so she continued. “First we will need to heal his body. Because he is a Synn demon, I understand he can be healed and strengthened through sex, but for now at least he is in no condition for that kind of aid. Is there any other way for him to be healed?” she asked. The male Synn demon from the club, the one Bryck called Mayce, straightened with a jerk. “Synn can absorb ambient sexual energy. Anyone having sex near him would be beneficial.” Maya figured that would be the case but was very glad to have it confirmed. “I’ve shaped the room to funnel all energy toward Flayvor. If energy comes to him from all four points of the compass, he should be sustained and perhaps improved, but I’m afraid all the energy in the world will not heal him without being directed properly.”
40
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon The tiny dream demon spoke up, “I can channel any energy into Flayvor, even convert blood and death energy so he can use it, but I have no knowledge of physical healing. All I could offer him is general aide.” “Wait!” A blond haired girl spoke up from between the two blood demons. “I’m three years into a medical degree. Will that help?” “If you have a good knowledge of anatomy it might. You will need to channel the energy to the deeper injuries.” “She can do that. We’ll teach her how to work the energy,” said one of the twin Cyvampis. “And if she can’t channel it herself, then it could work by pairing her with Wyk.” She nodded. Maybe they actually had a chance. “After his body is healed, his soul will have to be found and brought back.” She stared hard at Dante who was at least standing on his own now. “I have reason to believe that his soul has traveled to the Hall of Souls. Although any of the demons here could travel to the Hall, none could bring back Flayvor’s soul if it was found. To do so requires a vessel.” “Could we take his body there?” Sayvor asked plaintively. “No, he isn’t strong enough.” She could not ask this of anyone. It was far too dangerous. “There is one among you who could bring him back.” She let the silence stretch out. If he didn’t step forward of his own free will, the entire ceremony would be wasted. Dante stepped forward. “You mean me. I’ll do it.” He stood straight and tall, looking stronger than he ever had before. Excellent. “Once his soul is brought back, he will have to be awakened and convinced to stay. His mind will yearn for the Creator’s arms and seek to return to the Hall. Someone will have to reason with him and show him he is still needed.” “We will do that.” The dark haired woman with Sayvor spoke up. “Sayvor and I together will convince him to stay. We will show him how much he is wanted and needed.” With every passing moment, Maya was growing more confident that the ceremony might succeed. Thank the gods. She’d been counting heavily on their help. As so often happened, everything needed was provided. The only trick was seeing the elements and knowing how to use
41
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon them. There would be one final step that they did not need to know about and the tricky part would be keeping them on schedule so she could pull off the miracle at midnight. “Time will be against us. The ceremony needs to be complete within the next hour or it will be too late.” “An hour of sex,” one of the blood demons snickered. “Then you’d better pace yourselves. Flayvor will need continuous support.” She smiled and looked around the room. Everything seemed to be in place. The low altar was the focus and its burden was precious. “It’s time. I will act as guide.”

Chapter Eleven 11:05 Clarice, Rayce and Chayse Clarice leaned into Rayce’s supportive embrace. “Do you think this will work?” She certainly had her doubts. Even with a vampire brother, using magic to heal had never even occurred to her. “Bryck believes or we wouldn’t be here. We are, so it can work.” Chayse stroked a gentle hand down her cheek. “Do you trust us?” “Of course I do,” she answered immediately. Chayse, the softer of her two lovers, tangled his fingers with hers. “Let me explain how this will work. We will build magic for you to use. Once it is gathered, you can release it directly into Flayvor, exactly where he needs it most.” “How will I know what to do?” “We can practice while we build the magic.” Rayce pulled her hair aside and kissed her neck just how she liked. Chayse squeezed her hands reassuringly. “We can start slow—“ “Not too slow. You can do this. Together we can heal Flayvor. We can make it work.” This time Rayce’s kiss had a little bite to it. He dragged his fangs lightly over her skin, not enough to cut her, but plenty enough to send shivers of desire through her body. “It feels strange to have others in the room.” When Rayce paused in his erotic teasing, she didn’t have to read doubt in his thoughts. “I can do
43
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon this. I will do it, but I’m not sure how turned on I can get when I know there are a dozen others in the room with us watching our every move.” Rayce, so strong and sure, took charge. “They are much too busy to be watching us. Close your eyes, Clarice and listen to all that is happening around you. The sorceress’s chanting, the soft shifting of fabric, the quiet sighs of others sharing their pleasure. We are not the only ones building magic.” His fingers caressed down over her lids with a feather light touch. “Don’t open your eyes again until I tell you to. Do you understand?” With her eyes firmly closed, she said, “yes.” “Kneel for me.” His hands led her down with firm pressure. “I want you to take Chayse in your mouth while I undress you.” She didn’t bother to agree or argue. Rayce was in control and she trusted him implicitly. She sank until her knees connected with a soft surface. She’d expected hard stone. The plush material felt like an impossibly thick quilt. Her fingers were still tangled with Chayse’s so she could feel where he stood. When he released her, she slid her hands to his thighs, finding them already bare and smooth. He had taken demon form. As a human, his legs were slightly hairy, but after he changed the silky skin was bare. Firm hands rested on her shoulders. “Clarice, take him. Take him now.” “Mmm…” Damn, she loved it when Rayce got all bossy. Shivers danced down her spine as he stroked her back through her thin blouse. She leaned in and pressed a kiss to Chayse’s thigh, following the line upward to where his cock waited heavy and full. She stroked over him with her fingers, reveling in the power she held as his flesh jumped and his hips jerked forward. “I said now.” Rayce caught her wrists and pulled them back behind her, trapping them in one large hand. She nuzzled Chayse, licking along his length to his swollen head. She circled the tip with her tongue, savoring the drop of dew and then taking him into her mouth. She rode him slowly, taking him deep and then drawing back, over and over.

Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Fingers sank into her hair. Was it Rayce or Chayse? She wasn’t sure until a second set of hands, Rayce’s, slid lower, sliding under her skirt to her underwear. With a deft flick, the material came free. His fingers teased through her slit, feather light at first. Then dipping inward, driving pleasure up through her body. His arm came around her waist, under her loose blouse to cup her right breast. His breath hit her shoulder. Then between feather‐light kisses, his fangs scraped over her skin with his idea of fang foreplay. Damn, he had good instincts. The light touch left her trembling and out of rhythm with Chayse. His fingers in her hair brought her back to focus. He was close and she angled to take him deeper, swallowing him down as far as she could. She worked her throat until he moaned and shook. Rayce bit down on her shoulder. The sharp pain faded into waves of pleasure. She rode the wave as Rayce moved in closer behind her and pulled her ass up at a different angle. Her body clenched, aware of what was coming and impatient for the moment he would take her. Then he was there, his cock nudging her opening. He filled her with a thrust that drove her over Chayse. She screamed in pleasure, but the sound was muffled by Chayse’s body. As Rayce drew back, she sucked in air and flesh, rolling her tongue over Chayse’s cock. Rayce took control as he did so very well. He pumped into her, rocking them all in perfect motion. On and on, he worked them, until Chayse’s fingers tightened and his body grew whipcord taunt. He was on the verge of orgasm, so close and so exquisite he might take them all with him. “Hold it,” Rayce commanded. “When it comes, channel it to Clarice. She will need all the power we can build.” Not that she knew what to do with it. Still the building was certainly fun. For a heartbeat she considered how there were other people in the room, others who might be watching them have sex. It was surprisingly sexy to be the focus of so much attention. Then Rayce slammed deep into her. As his body took hers, his mind pushed into her, joining her
45
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon thoughts. I will show you. I will lead you. First the power will flow over your skin. When it does, you will have to consciously claim it for yourself. Usually both Chayse and I would take in the power created. This time it will all go to you. She moaned out with the physical pleasure and fought to focus on the thoughts that rushed through her mind. It is coming now. Be prepared. Chayse’s orgasm will bring your own. You will have to focus through the pleasure or the energy will be lost. How? she screamed mentally. Open yourself. If you want it bad enough, it will come to you. It wasn’t much help but she didn’t have time to worry. Chayse’s fingers clenched again, forcing her to take him deeper. Then he stilled with low groan. As she swallowed down his pleasure and shook with her own release, clenching onto Rayce, she attempted to do as Rayce had described. She wanted the power. She needed it to heal their friend. She was a healer. She could do this. The air over her skin itched, shrank and flowed. The energy danced over her, engulfing her in more than she’d ever expected. Now all she had to do was claim it. She tried to do it, to want it bad enough, to call it to her, but all the energy did was rush over her skin, until it burned and sizzled. She needed that power and yet she felt it begin to trickle away. No, I can do this. She imagined the power as something she could drink like water, and then she suckled at Chayse’s relaxing erection until he cried out. “Oh, Creator! That is… it’s too much.” Exquisite, damn near pain. And even better than his pleasure and her own joy, was the power as she swallowed it down. It filled her. Clarice, my love, you did it! Rayce whispered mentally. Now it’s my turn. His smooth deep rhythm took her back to the pinnacle of pleasure, back to the edge of the abyss. She released Chayse and he caught her body, supporting her against Rayce’s pounding motion. His lips found hers, kissing her, then pulling back to trail small bites down her neck, finally latching on and feeding.
46
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Then Rayce came with a rush and the power…It surged into her as if her skin didn’t even exist. Just suddenly there it all was, filling her with strength and energy. Her own orgasm joined in and Chayse shared in the pleasure. Together they all came with the joy and unity of being one. Clarice settled back into her skin and yet seemed to fill more space than she had before. Her heart continued to race and her skin tingled over every exposed inch. “Open your eyes.” Rayce claimed one hand while Chayse gripped the other. Together they led her to the low altar where their fallen comrade lay. She was expected to heal him, to use knowledge and all this wild energy to repair his broken body. But she didn’t know how. We will show you. Rayce opened her curled fingers and laid her palm over a vicious rip on the demon’s upper arm. Think about all you know about how skin and muscle should be, how it all fits together, how the blood flows and how the body heals itself over time. Picture it happening, push the energy into his injury and command it to do your will. The wound under her hand was through the muscle of his shoulder. She pictured how the body would push out debris and slowly fill in the missing flesh. She imagined how the muscle would knit back together. She jerked. Her hands were hot. It felt like she was holding a pan right out of the oven. She might have pulled back except for her lover’s firm hands holding her in place. She didn’t fight them but redoubled her effort, forcing her mind to focus on how the demon would use all that energy to heal. And she felt the most glorious thing…the skin twitched under her touch. The smooth, unblemished skin. The demon might not be there in spirit, but his body was waking without him, waking to her command.

Chapter Twelve 11:15 Dante, Mayce and Spyce “Dante, you must begin now.” He nodded in response to Maya’s urging but he didn’t know if he could do what she was asking. The blast he’d taken back at the club had done something to him and his body felt torn in two. Both Mayce and Spyce had done all they could to heal him with their sex magic, but he still teetered on some unseen edge. He knew that edge well enough. It was the same one he’d been dancing at for a while now. It was death. Perhaps it was perfect justice. Now that he wanted to live, he was being sent into hell on a mission very likely to kill him. Yeah, seemed like his kind of fucking luck. You will not die, Dante. Spyce whispered into his mind. We won’t let you die. Together, Mayce and I can keep you safe. He trusted her. The two Synn demons meant the promise but he saw the soft look to their gaze and knew it could only mean one thing. This was a suicide mission. The best he could hope for was to save their comrade before he lost his tenuous grip on life. “I’m ready. How do we do this?” He met Maya’s strange white eyes, surprised when the commander grabbed her hand and Maya’s eyes flashed back to brown. It made a strange kind of sense that the death
48
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon demon could satisfy her need to feed so easily. If he had more time he’d have told her how happy he was that she would finally find some peace. “We’re going with him,” Mayce said from his side. “Of course you are.” Maya smiled reassuringly. “You will both go with him. Dante will need your strength to do this miracle we’re asking of him.” A little of the tightness loosened in Dante’s chest. He wouldn’t go alone. At least this way if he failed, they’d still be able to use him as this vessel and bring back their friend. “Okay, let’s do it then.” He straightened his back, forcing his legs to hold his full weight. It was time to quit letting his lovers hold him up. It was time to prove he still had value and purpose. Mayce’s hand closed over his elbow in a fierce grip. You have strength. You have purpose. You have our love. You will not do this alone. We go in together and we will come back together. Do you understand? Hell, yeah. He understood. Mayce was clear as a fucking bell and his face was set with a determination deeper than Dante had ever seen before. Thank you. “Close your eyes, Dante.” Mayce pulled Spyce close enough to tuck under one arm while dragging Dante into a tight hug with his other. “We’ll go directly to the entrance of the Hall of Souls.” Dante gasped as the world whirled around him. He pinched his eyes shut and the motion eased to a nauseating twisting sensation. To keep from retching, he focused on Mayce’s arm where it pressed into his shirt‐covered back. The strength in that embrace fortified him. He’d maybe only known Mayce and Spyce for a few hours but he trusted them with his life. They would not desert him. They’d stick by him to the end. He’d seen in their hearts. They felt just as strongly as he did. They loved him. He felt it in how they offered what he needed. They knew when the whip was enough and when a bite would feel good. And they loved him enough to stop even when he didn’t ask for it, in those times when he should have asked to stop. He pressed his lips against the soft skin at the base of Mayce’s neck. The gentle kiss brought a tremble to Mayce as well as a bulge pressing
49
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon into Dante’s side. Mmm, Synn demons are so easy. “We’re here, Dante.” Mayce’s hand stroked down his back before releasing him. “Come on, no sex now, boys.” Spyce’s voice was low and sexy. She grabbed his other hand and turned him to face an enormous black gateway. It was like an arched door but, instead of wood or metal, only black emptiness waited in the entrance. They’d have to go through that doorway. Even the thought rooted a painful knot in his stomach. Was it an instinctive fear? What was it that made this doorway so damn terrifying? His lovers tightened their grip on his hands. Only then did he realize he’d been backing away from that door. “We have to go into the Hall of Souls,” Spyce said. “Flayvor’s soul will be within the Hall. All the Tascryn souls seek out the sanctuary of the hall when left without a guide.” “How will we find it?” His voice shook, dammit. He took a deep breath. “How will we take it back?” Mayce’s face hardened slightly. “I won’t make you do this. Neither will Spyce. This has to be your choice.” Damn, damn, damn. If only they would order his compliance. Then he could do it. He’d obey any command they gave. But they expected him to make this decision. They trusted him to choose to save their friend. Damn. “I want to, but it would be easier if I knew what I had to do.” Spyce stroked his jaw. “We have asked a lot from you. I’m sorry there hasn’t been much time.” She pressed a kiss to his lips so sweet he almost missed the importance of her next words. “Your soul has already passed which leaves you as a vessel capable of carrying a soul out of the hall. It is the only way someone other than a mate or the soul’s owner can take a soul from the Hall. This is how each of us had to claim our souls before we could walk under the sun. We walked into the hall and found our soul and when we came out…everything was different.” It sounded beautiful. “But how will I find his soul? I don’t know him at all. I don’t think I’ve ever even met him.”
50
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon “That is why we will go in with you. We’ll help you to find the right soul.” “As well as protect you from the other souls,” Mayce added. “Protect me? Will they cause me harm? How can a soul cause me harm?” Dante had always pictured souls as some missing part like a limb or an eye. But the way they talked, a soul was more like a being of its own. He thought back for a moment to the day he’d been turned. The moment his soul had fled had hurt, burned him deep inside, as if the core of his body had been set on fire. Then the pain had passed and left behind the hunger. Was that how the souls would hurt him? Mayce met his gaze. “It is possible for you to be possessed and lose yourself to a kind of soul madness. If a powerful soul enters your body, it might take control or it might battle for control and either option would be bad for the part of you that is Dante.” “We won’t let that happen.” Spyce tightened her grip on his hand but he couldn’t tell if her fierce answer sounded more confident or desperate. “I won’t have to do anything then? I’m just the box for you to carry this guy out in?” They both glanced away. “Shit. You don’t know what to expect, do you?” “No, not exactly.” The lack of certainty in Mayce was new, unexpected and very unwelcome. He counted on them to lead him, to make the best choice for him. Dammit, they should know how to deal with this. “All I know is that we are running out of time,” Spyce whispered. Dante shook free of their hands. It was do or die time. “Well then, let’s fucking do it already.” He strode forward, passing into the black well of the Hall before his feet could get smart and stop him. “The irony is twenty‐four hours ago I wanted to die. I was ready to face the long sleep, that final dirt dance, the end of it all. Then I met you two and everything changed.” His lovers flanked him, each a half step behind him which was weird and yet strangely right. As much as he hadn’t wanted this role, this
51
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon duty or this authority, he had it and it was damn sure time he took some responsibility. There was a chance he wouldn’t survive, the dangerous risk of falling into eternal madness and the probability of some major shit about to hit the fan, but none of that mattered. “Where the hell are we?” Spyce asked. That was when Dante knew what shit would be hitting his fan. This was his own personal nightmare. It was the place he’d been imprisoned, enslaved by his maker. “My maker’s home.” “Shit.” Spyce glanced to the right toward the whipping wall. Blood dripped down from the chains. The claw marks on the wall ranged from waist level to higher than their heads. He didn’t tell them that the claw marks were imagined. His fingers hadn’t been strong enough to gouge marks, not when he was adult and sure as fuck not when he was a child. He shuddered as memories washed over him. The beatings had begun light with the Master always explaining why he was being punished and how it was good for them both. In the beginning he hadn’t believed those words but before long he had understood that his role with the master had a purpose and, although the sadistic bastard had chosen cruelty to demonstrate his place, he still found comfort in that place. Mayce’s hand landed on Dante’s shoulder, making him jump at the sudden contact. “Dante, the Hall is focused on you. Only you will be able to guide us.” But he’d never led and even now his mind reached out, pleading for a master to take the lead. I would take you back, little mortal. Dante froze. Ice slid through his veins and he trembled at that almost forgotten voice. “Oh God…anything but that.” The man materialized beside the blood‐covered chains. His claw tipped fingers caressed the steel links lovingly, dipping over each curve and joint one at a time. Each link changed with the touch, reformed with jagged edges and thorny points. Sebastian was dressed in his casual black slacks and a long leather jacket that reached his knees. His chest was as smooth and pale as ever and above that his face remained the perfection
52
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon of youth, captured forever at the age of eighteen, just as he’d done to Dante. “Dante, he isn’t real.” Spyce gripped his shoulder hard enough to hurt. Obviously it wasn’t real. His real maker had a significant hole punched in his chest right over his heart. But real or not, this was the nightmare the Hall had decided to deal to him. “What do you want, Sebastian?” “You know what I want. You’ve always known what I wanted.” Shit. “If I give you what you want, will I get what I want?” “No, to get that you will have to do more. To gain what you seek, you will have to do as was done to you. You will chain your lovers and take from them all they will give.” The thing that was Sebastian smirked, his lips twitching upward. “But first you will give me what I want.” Dante wanted to ask what, but knew he’d get no answer that he liked. All he could think to do was to treat this thing like he would have his old master. And in its place his master would have wanted to feed his more violent hungers. He reached up and gently unclasped Spyce’s fingers. “I can do this part if you can help with the second.” Spyce bit back her fear for her lover. In Dante she saw a new strength that was both encouraging and terrifying. If they made it out of the Hall alive, he would be different. He might not need them. He might not even want them. Her mate stepped in behind her and wrapped his arms around her body protectively. His actions said she would always have Mayce and, if they lost Dante, they would grieve together. She didn’t have to touch his mind to know he would feel every bit as deeply as she did. Dammit, Dante was theirs and she wasn’t going to sit by passively and lose him. For now we will watch. Seeing him with his maker will show us much of his heart. I love you, Mayce. And we both love Dante. Whatever it takes, we will leave here whole and together.
53
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Sebastian turned his black eyes on them. “You will leave however you are allowed to leave.” His hand waved and a wall shot up behind them. From its stony surface sprang vines, which leapt out clawing and binding them both. She fought against the confinement but each motion only made the vines tighten. Mayce was secured beside her but he’d stopped fighting at once. As usual her blood drinking lover was calmer and more cool‐headed than her. She tried to follow his lead and relax into the imprisonment, at least for now. For now they could do nothing for Dante. Soon enough he would need them again. Dante shot a startled look their way. He stepped forward, taking the thing’s attention for himself. His master had always wanted submission and cruelty. Both he could offer. He dropped to his knees before Sebastian. His master had never allowed the use of his name even in private thoughts. But this thing would not be considered his master. That slot was filled already by Spyce and Mayce. Head hanging, he waited for the cruelty to begin. He didn’t have to wait long. His clothing caught fire, burning him painfully as it charred to ash and fell around him. He fought to hold his position, fought to not scream out in pain. He liked pain. Sebastian had taught him to respond to it, but fire was a whole other bag of agony. The bite of the flames tore through him but offered no pleasure. On and on it went until he broke, writhing on the floor, crying out with everything he could, begging it to stop. As his breath finally slowed and his heart pounded a little more quietly, he heard Spyce and Mayce’s psychic support and felt their hands holding him. They were still bound several feet away, yet their love bridged the distance and embraced him gently, helping him back from that place of pain. Dante stood slowly, his naked body shedding black flakes which he knew logically was his charred skin. From Sebastian’s loafer‐covered feet up to his bare chest and finally to his cold eyes, Dante met that stare evenly while grasping at his composure. This was just the beginning.
54
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Sebastian grabbed him and threw him against the wall with the chains. “You thought I was cruel before…imagine me now after being trapped here in hell for years of torment.” The whispered hiss of words fell over him like a wave of icy water. It was too real, exactly the tone Sebastian would have used when at his worst. The chain bonds came to life, tangling around him in tight painful loops. Fear clawed its way up his throat, crying out to ask for mercy, but the words would not come. His tongue locked down tighter then any ball gag could manage. He choked on his scream, clawing to get free. The cool links turned to claws of fire, burning and biting into his skin. No part of his body was sacred. All of it was torn to shreds. Only then did Sebastian advance. His claws added to the pain, digging deep and brutal, and matched by fangs that chewed and gnawed at him. He was dying and hated the helplessness of it all. It wasn’t the power he feared but the power in the hands of one he didn’t trust. Worst was that his body still responded as it had been trained. His cock was hard and aching even though it was cut and bleeding just like the rest of him. It knew nothing of trust or fear, only that the pain and scent of blood led to sex and satisfaction. In that moment he hated his own body, despised how it betrayed him. Sebastian fell before him, latching onto his sex, caressing him with his tongue even while biting down and feeding on Dante’s blood. The pain and pleasure blurred to some dead place he didn’t want to go. Dante! It is not real! This is your fear brought to life. You can stop it. Mayce’s strength filled his mind, filled his soul. You have to turn your fears aside and take control. His mind broke free when his body lacked the strength. This wasn’t real and it wasn’t happening. But it sure as fuck felt real. The pain was real. This thing in front of him might not be Sebastian, but it was real enough. He looked down at where its claws dug into his flank. It’s not real. If I want it to stop, it will. Sebastian looked up at him, trailing one fang sharply along his
55
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon aching cock. “I am real to you and that is all that matters.” The evil laughter echoed through the hall before the creature stood, revealing a hideous, giant cock rising from a barbed wire nest of hair at its crotch. The monstrosity must have been four inches wide and a foot long, with fucking spikes along the underside. Dante trembled. His body might still be hard, but he wanted nothing to do with that. Not even if it were attached to an angel. That weapon was meant for only one action…killing. Help me, he screamed mentally. Save me… Then Mayce was there. Sebastian was gone and Mayce was in his place. No… Sebastian wasn’t gone. Not gone by a long shot. Dante screamed… even as a hand threatened to strangle him from the inside. It clawed up through his throat. It tightened like a fist over his heart. He’s in me… He whimpered. The terror of losing his body to that monster fed his fear and stole his strength. Mayce wrapped his arms around his lover’s body, holding on with all he could, trying to force the vampire’s fears out. Help me, Spyce. We’re losing him. Spyce was beside him, embracing Dante. Their muscles showing what their minds couldn’t get through. He was loved. He was needed. He was safe. Still Dante fought them and his own nightmares. Every ounce of his inhuman strength wrought damage on himself. His own claws tore at his flesh. His own fears made the worst of possibilities real to him, real enough to kill him. How can we fight this? Mayce pulled Dante’s hands up and wrapped them tight in his own, pinning them to the vampire’s chest. “Dante! Stop fighting me!” Dante stopped struggling. His eyes opened, just slightly meeting Spyce’s worried gaze. Command him, Mayce. You can command him. Wasn’t exactly the right mood for their normal games, but he’d do it if that’s what it took to break Dante free from his nightmares. Mood… I need you to improve our surroundings and see if you can locate Flayvor’s soul. I
56
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon will focus on Dante and bring him back to us. When the vampire tensed up and a tiny whimper slipped through his lips, Mayce tightened his grip, rubbing his body flush against Dante’s back. Mayce shifted his form to fully demonic. His wings wrapped around him and Dante like a long silken robe binding them together. He pressed a firm kiss to the back of his lover’s neck, hard enough to push his thickened fangs against the skin but angled so there was no chance of cutting him. “You are mine. You belong with me. You belong to me.” Dante trembled. “You are not afraid of me.” Mayce kept his wings tight but loosened his hands to fold them over Dante’s balled fists. Slowly he unfolded the clenched fingers. “Do you trust me, Dante?” His answer was a quiet choked whimper. “Answer me.” He allowed a low growl to rumble through his body, and where they were pressed so tight, it vibrated into Dante as well. Dante’s throat bobbed twice before he whispered, “Yes, Master.” He slid one sharp fang along Dante’s bare shoulder. “Tell me you trust me.” The shaking subsided slightly. “I…I trust you, Master.” “Good.” Mayce continued his slow dominance, every motion designed to control and calm Dante. Around them the room changed, reshaping itself to better fit Spyce’s will. The walls and floors changed to the black marble of the royal wing of hell and the objects of terror brought forth by Dante’s fears faded to a degree. The chains remained, but the jagged edges blunted and the blood disappeared. The room was still equipped for bondage but less so for torture. “Help me,” Dante whispered through a sob. He tightened his grip. “I’m here. I won’t let anything harm you.” The trembling increased, but at least he didn’t struggle. “Trust me. I always protect what is mine and you, Dante, are mine.” He let his words drip with possessiveness, counting on Dante to remember who he was and how well he could protect him. “You can’t stop what is inside me. You can’t protect me from
57
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon myself.” Shit. Spyce! Get back here. “I can. I have and I always will.” Mayce turned the vampire in his arms. His wings kept them bound tight, but when he saw Dante’s face he almost fell back in surprise. Trails of blood tears streaked his cheeks and his fangs were fully extended. But the scary part was his eyes. The rich blue of before was gone, replaced with solid black, empty, angry darkness. “You can’t save me now. I have a new master.” “The hell you do.” Mayce grabbed Dante’s hair and dragged his forehead against his own. “You are mine.” The vampire’s lips twisted in a mockery of a smile. “Mine now.” The voice was deep, deeper than Dante’s sexy purr. “Mine again. Mine forever.” It couldn’t be… “Sebastian?” “Guessed it in one.” It laughed with Dante’s mouth while tears continued to trail down Dante’s face. “What the fuck?” Spyce skidded to a stop beside them. “His old master? There is no fuckin’ way.” But they’d known possession was possible. They’d counted on it working in their favor, using Dante like an old Pepsi bottle to carry a soul out of the Hall. “Son of a bitch.” Mayce agreed heartily with his mate’s assessment. There was no deeper cruelty to be done to Dante than to have him possessed and powerless by his old master. And the probability of his master’s soul being here still waiting… Fuck. That wasn’t how the Hall of Souls worked. This is another illusion, another of Dante’s fears. Or our own. She said “our” but he knew immediately it was his fear, his terror that he would not be able to protect those he loved. Damn. “Take control and prove you can protect him, that you can give him what he needs.” Spyce kissed Mayce hard and deep before drawing back from her two lovers. “I trust you to save him. I will see to finding Flayvor’s soul.” Then she was gone, leaving Mayce and Dante alone to
58
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon figure their way out of this mess. First he had to get his head on straight. Only then could he deal with Dante’s issues. Fuck him. What his mate so elegantly suggested settled into Mayce’s gut. He was a Synn demon. Dante was his bitch. Dammit all, showing his control through sexual possession did feel right. Mayce claimed Dante’s mouth, grinding his fangs hard against those of the vampire, thrusting his tongue deep, possessing every molecule until both were left growling in need. Oh hell, yeah. He kissed him again and again until Dante’s hands slid up his chest to grip his shoulders. Mayce stroked and caressed with his hands, letting the long claws scrape over skin, declaring ownership to all territory they crossed. He ended the kiss and turned Dante, exposing his throat. “Mine,” he growled before sinking fang, feeding on the searing blood that was all Dante. Dante’s hands moved downward and around to Mayce’s ass. His fingers dug in as a low rumbling growl, more purr than complaint, vibrated through their bodies. Was it Dante, or his own sound? Who the fuck cared? Mayce released Dante’s neck and returned to his mouth, kissing him, devouring him. He dissolved the remains of his clothing and caught the vampire’s leg, dragging it up to bring their bodies more tightly together. His hips jumped, sliding his cock between Dante’s thighs, rubbing deliciously under Dante’s shaft and balls. He repeated the abrasive contact until the frustration was too much. Dammit, he needed Dante’s ass, wanted it more than anything on earth, would get it if he had to break his own spine to correct the angle. He pulled free of the kiss, spreading his wings to free Dante more fully. “Tell me you want this, Dante. Tell me that you want sex, here, with me, now.” Dante’s eyes opened. They were the beautiful blue of a summer sky. They were all Dante and not possessed by anything but desire. “I want you. I need you to fuck me, own me… love me.” Hell yeah. Spyce echoed his sentiments exactly.
59
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Mayce pulled Dante back into his arms. “We love you.” This time their kiss was tender and deep, slower than before, but just as passionate. Until the vampire bit him…closing fangs over Mayce’s lower lip. “Then fuck me already.” “Gladly.” Mayce spun them toward the wall, turning Dante in the motion so his ass came flush, framing his aching cock. He caught Dante’s wrists and fastened them into the cuffs hanging from the wall. His hands trailed down Dante’s body while he thrust shallowly against Dante’s perfect ass. By the time his hands reached Dante’s cock, the vampire was rocking against him with every motion. He began stroking Dante in time with one hand and thumbing him open with the other. Even that slight invasion had Dante shaking on the edge of release. “Fuck me, Mayce.” Far be it from him to disobey his sub… Mayce moved, rubbing his cock over Dante’s ass, pushing the head in and withdrawing. Again and again. Deeper and deeper until Dante was screaming in need. Then he took mercy, catching Dante’s hands to keep him from thrashing in the chain bonds. He brought their bodies together, taking Dante deep and hard until the vampire writhed. Even that wasn’t enough. He needed to possess his body, his heart, his missing soul. Mayce abandoned the bound hands to stroke over the hard arch of Dante’s cock. He moved in time with his strokes, bringing them both to the edge of orgasm. Then he nuzzled Dante’s head to the side and bit his pale neck, drinking down his blood while their bodies exploded over into oblivion. The moment was perfect, or as close as it could be without Spyce joining them. I was with you, she whispered into his mind. I love you both and can revel in your pleasure even when seeing to other duties. He parted their bodies and unbound Dante, pulling him into a warm embrace. “Can you hear Spyce? She shares her love with you.” Dante snuggled into his arms, one hand touching the tiny trail of blood at his neck. “I heard her. I can always hear her when with you. The two of you are so close. Someday…”
60
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon You have our love, Dante. The mental connection will come with time. Spyce appeared beside them. “Speaking of time, we are out of it.” Her mouth dropped open in shock. She stared at them both like they’d lost their minds. Perhaps they had. They were snuggled together in one of the scariest places in hell, like humans would with a warm fire on a cold night. But he made no move to set back Dante. They’d been through too much to separate now when the simple touch of their skin offered so much comfort to both. “You found him.” She gaped. “What?” “I’ve been searching everywhere for Flayvor’s soul and Dante is carrying it already.” She traced her fingers down Dante’s back. Mayce turned his lover around to see what she was talking about and there on Dante’s back he found what looked like a tattoo of delicate russet feathers cascading from shoulders to hips. They were the exact shade of Flayvor’s wings. “He must have been attracted to the sex.” She shook her head. “Well, we should get back. Time is of the essence.” She paused while Mayce materialized clothing for him and Dante. Then they walked back through the waiting archway. “Thank you, Creator,” Mayce whispered.

Chapter Thirteen 11:35 Sasha, Sayvor and Flayvor Sayvor felt the moment his brother’s heart began to beat once more. His own heartbeat fought to catch and match the uneven rhythm. He shook with the effort it took to force his heartbeat to keep steady. Sasha wrapped her arms around him, a hug of support he needed to stop his convulsive shaking. “I’m here, baby. I’ve got you.” She pressed her lips to his demonic shoulder, combing his brown hair back from his face. Her other hand was tangled in Flayvor’s unresponsive fingers. She was such a blessing. What would he have done without Sasha? He’d have died. Without her affection to bind him to the world, he’d have died the moment his brother’s heart had stopped. As it was, he was torn apart by fear for Flayvor but in no danger of losing his soul to the madness. Sasha was his miracle. He held onto to her, keeping her pressed tight to his side. Suddenly Flayvor’s body shook as if in the throes of a seizure. Clarice jumped back. An arch of energy leapt toward her, but it was blocked by the blood demons’ sturdy frames as they shielded their new mate. Sayvor’s gaze hit where Sasha still held his brother’s hand. “Did that hurt you?”
62
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon “No, but he feels different now. I’m not sure but I think he is holding my hand back.” A burst of thin smoke signaled Mayce and Spyce’s return. They clutched their vampire between them. “You have him!” Sayvor couldn’t miss the change brought by Flayvor’s returning soul. His body leapt in joy, feeling the completion of having his brother back. The strange silver‐haired woman stopped him when he would have rushed the vampire who carried his brother’s soul. “Sayvor, you and your mate must see to your part of this duty now. If you fail, he will still be lost.” “Lost?” The word froze his advance. If his brother was lost at this point, would his soul be left wandering? He gathered his courage. That wasn’t going to happen to his brother. “Tell me what I need to do.” Sasha’s hand gripped his. “What we have to do.” Maya’s lips tightened. “You have to have sex.” “Easy!” Sayvor cried. “With his soul in order to lead it back to his body.” Okay so that might not be so easy. It was Sasha who asked, “How do we have sex with his soul?” Maya smiled more broadly. “To be honest, this is all best guess at this point. My belief is that if you and Sayvor begin to have sex and call out to him mentally, inviting him to join you…I believe he will leave Dante and join with you.” “Uhh… okay then.” Sasha seemed less than sure of the prospect, but Sayvor thought the strange idea might just work. Using their linked hands, he led Sasha to the quilted area to the side of Flayvor’s low altar. I know this will be strange, but will you be all right making love with others in the room? Sayvor, I’m not even surprised by it. She cupped his chin. I maybe came into this relationship not knowing much of anything about your kind but by now I know two things for certain. One—if it has to do with Synn demons, then the answer is sex, the kinkier the better, and two—when it comes to one Synn I know the answer is always yes.
63
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Do you know how special you are? You have saved me and sacrificed so much in the hopes of saving my brother. It really didn’t make much sense to him why she would do as she did for a virtual stranger. She pulled him close so that they stood together in the center of the plush blankets. I admit this has been a strange few days and a week ago I never would have considered this an even vague possibility, but every step I take at your side has been my choice. I regret nothing and will happily do all I can to save your brother. She kissed him then, soft and chaste at first, but heating quickly to plunge her tongue into his mouth and tilt into the passion waiting there. Their hearts slammed together, beating as one just as they did every time they touched. The kiss slowly faded into fluttery presses until they parted again. Besides it’s not as if we will be alone during our sex. Already, those randy blood demons are back at Clarice and the strange little demons have been going at it for a while now. Thank goodness they are not in human form. That would have killed my mood. He smiled then. She still saw Wyk and Dyce as children, right up until they had shifted form before her. You accept so much. Thank you, Sasha, for being you. “Much as I’d love to keep you here sweet‐talking me, we’d better get to it.” She grabbed the waistband of his leather pants, tugging him close and working diligently at unhooking the button and zipper. Sasha’s playful mood was exactly what he needed. Dammit, this was going to work and within the hour he’d have his brother back and a lovely woman willing to stand between them. His pants fell to the floor and he stepped from the tangled material. He’d been commando so his hardening erection sprang free and into her waiting hands. Being Synn had certain advantages, one of which was the ability to be ready for sex at the drop of a hat or the fall of a pair of pants. He threaded his fingers into Sasha’s thick hair, pulling her back into a kiss while he dematerialized her clothing, turning them to smoke which he held close, tickling over her skin. “Mmm…” I love when you do that with your tongue.
64
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon He chuckled, sweeping her from her feet and lowering her to the blanket. If you love that, can’t wait to see what you think of this! He moved between her legs and fell over her delicious sex, licking and plunging his tongue deep. Her knees fell over his shoulders, closing against his head with her thrashing response. “Holy hell!” Her fingers gripped the blanket to either side and she arched into his mouth. Then he got serious, adjusting to focus on her swollen clit, circling it with the tip of his tongue, sucking it between his lips and finally nibbling it with his small fangs. Her first tremor had him riding out the pulses of her pleasure. He circled her entrance with his forefinger, reveling in the contractions, letting each one close around him while he continued to tease her clit. Then he replaced his finger with his tongue and trailed his damp finger back to press over her ass. With his tongue devouring her pussy, he dipped his fingertip in to push her over the edge. The backlash of her orgasm rocked him back on his heels. She screamed, “Sayvor!” Her body bucked out of control. He drank down her pleasure, basking in the glow of energy. But this wasn’t all about him or about her. He opened his mind to Sasha but focused his attention on calling to his brother. Flayvor! Come, join us, my twin. Sasha added her invitation to his. Brother of my lover, join us! Her breathy mental tone was the perfect lure. It was pleasure, sex and love all wrapped up in bone‐deep satisfaction. Come to us, Flayvor. I have waited days to meet you. I will wait no more. Come, so that we can all come together. The remaining threads of smoke twisted in the air around them. It grew in texture, offering an image of his beloved brother, a pale visage so frail that even their breath distorted it. But there was no doubt that this was Flayvor’s soul. It reached out toward them, a twisting tendril seeking some purchase. Sasha lifted her hand, extending it out slowly so as to not disturb the air. The smoky air gathered, shaping itself into a vague hand. Those fingertips came up to her own still digits. The contact was electric. There
65
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon was no sense of touch, and yet, she felt Flayvor against that part of her more precious than skin. He touched her soul, twined through her heart. And in that moment she knew him, knew the very deepest part of him. This gentle, fun‐loving demon deserved to be saved. He was full of love just like his brother and she suddenly couldn’t imagine a world without either of them. Join us, Flayvor. Come back to us. Be with us. Stay with us. Sayvor entreated. She added, Love us. For she could already feel the emotion blooming within her for this demon she had yet to meet alive, in the flesh. Knowing his soul was probably different, but she couldn’t doubt what she felt. She carefully moved her hand to cup his illusive cheek and a thousand smoky molecules swept around her hand like the finest of silky hair. Sayvor moved up behind her, his warm skin pressed against her back from shoulder to thigh where she knelt. His hands came around her waist and cupped her bare breasts lovingly. We will both love you. His lips trailed kisses of fire over her right shoulder. Your body is a temptation that no man or Synn could deny. “Sayvor once promised me love between you.” She trailed her fingers down where Flayvor’s chest would be. The motion twisted the smoke into ringlets. I would have you both now. She arched her back, leaning into Sayvor’s arms and pushing her breasts up like a sacrificial offering. Sayvor’s hands molded her body, gliding over her curves. One lowered to slide into the narrow line of her pubic hair while the other twisted and lifted her hair so he could continue to nibble his way up her neck. Her breath whooshed out when his lips closed over her earlobe. The gentle sucks matched the caress of his fingers over her sex. Her eyelids sank closed with the delicious, seductive strokes. She lifted her arms, running her fingers through Sayvor’s long silky hair. His flowing wings draped around them both, caressing her sides and tickling her thighs. This time his seduction was slow and serious. Each touch trailed
66
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon desire through her body, beginning at skin level and sinking so much deeper. Feather light brushes caressed around her breasts. Flayvor. His soul had accepted the invitation. Rather than open her eyes and see the smoky form, she imagined what the living Flayvor would be like as he knelt before her, laving attention on her front while his mirror image, Sayvor, focused on her back. Flayvor would lean forward, blowing his breath over the tight tips of her nipples. He was a breast man, teasing them with the lightest touches, tempting them harder with cool air and his devilish tongue. Oh, Flav, you do that so well. I can’t wait to feel the rest of you. To feel your body pressed to mine. Her mind filled with the image of him kneeling and lifting her to straddle his hips, taking his long cock deep into her body just as she offered. Damn, that does look good. And felt good, because hints of the whole scene jumped along the edges of her senses. She could almost feel his cock driving up through her body, possessing her in a single deep stroke. And she could definitely feel Sayvor’s hard shaft sliding up and down the crease of her ass. His warm breath tingled over her cheek. “You have your eyes closed.” His chuckle was more than a little devious. “I like you this way. How would you feel about a blindfold? Do you trust me enough to play?” Her body clenched in excitement. “Yes.” A silken cloth of some kind slid against her cheek. A moment later the dim glow of light faded and she waited in darkness. It was a strange feeling of being at their mercy. Her heart sped up in anticipation. You may not understand but I believe this will help Flayvor. Perhaps it will even tempt him to join us physically. I trust you. And I adore you. As the words entered her mind, she felt a second bond, binding her hands together above her head. Helpless. She was helpless. Sayvor then returned to his slow seduction. His fingers, or perhaps Flayvor’s, trailed over her body. Lips kissed her shoulder, up her arms, over each finger. She was lowered to lie on the blanket. The delicate touch of a tongue moved over her right breast
67
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon and then a second at her left. They suckled in unison. Hands trailed up the insides of her thighs, parting her, opening her body to whatever invasion they chose. Someone moved between her thighs. The slow thrust drove up through her with a wave of exquisite pleasure. She was kissed deeply and hands continued to cup and mold her aching breasts. The kiss ended and was replaced with pressure to either side of her face. At first she couldn’t identify the body parts and then she felt the tip of a cock nudging at her lips. She accepted it at once, opening and taking it in to nibble at the head and then devour her way up the length. The slow strokes claiming her pussy increased in power and strength. Still in that easy rhythm but deeper, driving her forward toward orgasm. The cock at her lips was pulled away and she was lifted up until she was straddling the one fucking her, her breasts flush to his chest, her lips owned by his. She looped her bound arms around his neck and used her knees to ride him. She knew what was coming. This was the image of the two demons fucking her. Flayvor was in her arms and Sayvor was behind her. He would want to take her from there, to claim her ass while she fucked Flayvor. She wanted it too. Yes, fuck me now. I want you both. I love you both. He was so warm pressed against her back. His cock hottest of all. First his fingers found her, using her own slick moisture to circle her ass and push inward. A little at first, then the slow motion rocked with her and Flayvor. Then he moved and the head of his cock penetrated. The pressure stretched her and she moaned. Flayvor swallowed down the sound. Their bodies rocked together as Sayvor drove in deep. The motion continued and she lost herself to the wild ride. Both demons fucked her relentlessly. Their motions perfectly coordinated to stroke at the same time. Orgasm shattered her restraint until she was no more than a place for their pleasure, a place for her own.
68
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon She was cocooned between them, but she was also part of them. She felt their rising orgasm even as her own expanded once more. Then they hit the peak together as one being. The rippling pleasure stole her muscles, jolting the power through her blood and bones until she was limp from the moment. The blindfold, a long red silk scarf, loosened. Flayvor’s fingers gently parting the material until it was free of her face and hair. Her gaze met his golden brown eyes. Thank you. She closed the short distance, pressing her lips to his. Even with his cock still inside her, this kiss was different, soft and loving but lacking the wild heat from earlier. This one was all about kindness now that the lust had been abated. Sayvor parted his body from hers by a shallow breath of air. His arms embraced them both. His cheek pressed to her shoulder while his nimble finger unbound her wrists. Sasha sighed. She felt more complete than ever before, as if her heart had been missing pieces and only now was returned to being whole. She pulled back. “We did it?” Her hands ran over Flayvor’s face and down his body in wonder. He’d been lost and now, through magic and passion, he was back. “We did it!” She dragged him back into her arms. His cock jumped inside her. “You did it and if you keep doing it…” Flayvor didn’t have the chance to finish his promise. She crushed his mouth to hers, thrusting her tongue in to offer him whatever he felt up to taking.

Chapter Fourteen 11:45 Maya and Bryck “You saved him.” Bryck said while the Synn continued to take their fill from Dr. Washington. The sight was a blessing. “I thought he was lost.” He released Maya’s hand to turn her shoulders, forcing her to face him. Oh shit. Her eyes were white. She was being drained even with her hand in his. It was more than just her eyes. Her skin was pale. Her wonderfully lush lips were thin and strained, framed with white lines. “Maya? What’s happening?” The way he’d understood, this was to be the final step in bringing him back. She hadn’t mentioned anything about her own powers being needed or drained. She’d lied. Or at least left that part unsaid. She didn’t answer and he wondered if her hearing had dimmed that much that she hadn’t heard his questions. He pulled her close, running his hands over her cool bare arms and up to cup her face. “What have you done, Maya?” She slumped in his arms. Fuck! His fear jumped, powering up his magic which burst over her like a black gust of wind. Thankfully what would kill any other revived her. Her milky eyes blinked up at him. “Bryck?” He pulled her close, stroking her silver hair. “What’s happening?
70
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon Tell me so I can help.” The corner of her mouth tilted up. “You can’t help with this.” “The hell I can’t!” he snarled. Explain what’s happening. But he knew the demand was hopeless. She was martyring herself to save his demons and that shit just wasn’t going to fly. He pushed deeper in her mind, parting the secrets, ignoring all but the one she tried to keep from him. He would find it. There was no way he’d let her do this, whatever this was, alone. Then he knew. He just simply knew. She was pushing her life force into Flayvor, keeping him bound to earth and fighting back the death that had already claimed him. He shook her hard enough to rattle her empty head. “I can help you by at least feeding you energy. Without it, you’ll burn out.” Hell, with it, she still might burn out. Death magic was the ugliest of the magic forms and having that much flowing through her body was fucking risky. She looked pissed, but he really didn’t give a shit. “You’re doing this for my men. You are not doing it alone.” Her glare spoke clearly, but would have been more convincing if her eyes had not been clouding over. As it was, he watched as the life seeped out of her face and was replaced by pale strain. “How long will it take? How much effort?” She shook her head. I don’t know. Damn. “How will you know when to stop?” He is surrounded by the black of death. I draw that as long as I can, and replace it with life to keep him from falling. When there is no more death, he will live. And she was just stubborn enough to die trying if that black halo didn’t fade before she did. “I’ll feed you power and keep you strong while you do your thing.” The only other choice was dragging her ass out of here and risking losing Flayvor to the death that hovered so nearby. Before she could argue the point he grabbed her up in his arms and carried her petite body to the center altar. With Flayvor and Sayvor going at Sasha, diligently regaining their strength, the raised stone was empty and would be the perfect place to hold Maya. She had called the stone and instilled it with her own strength. It was connected to her and was close to
71
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon the Synn demons, close enough to send out the magic without the extra effort needed to direct it from across the room. Holding her in one arm, he vaulted to it. Then he settled down on his ass, cradling her on his lap. A small, clawed hand grasped his forearm. Wyk’s calculating gaze studied him for a long moment. “Do you know what you are doing, Commander?” Not a fucking clue. “Yes.” “Your magic will kill us all.” “Not if it’s channeled through Maya,” he said. And if he was wrong, then no one but Wyk would leave here alive. If he was wrong enough, several blocks of dead people would baffle the police for years. Shit. He couldn’t risk that much for either Flayvor or Maya. Damn it all straight to hell. “I trust you to take me out if I’m wrong.” Wyk brushed her clawed fingers over the base of her neck and her black and red medallion became visible. It was this ancient artifact that protected her from death magic. He wasn’t sure exactly how the tiny dragon amulet worked, but the wearer was virtually indestructible. It pulsed with life and easily countered his own magic in the hands of one who knew how to wield it. And Wyk knew how to wield it, at least against him, though he’d rarely given her reason to do her thing. Maya shook in his arms, drawing his attention back to the most immediate problem. She was wasting away even in his arms, even cradled against his body. Simple contact wasn’t enough. She needed his emotions. Only the flare of his magic that came with him losing control would be enough to sustain her. He looked to Flayvor, focusing hard to see even a hint of the death halo. Damn. Time to up the voltage. Bryck lifted Maya’s limp frame, dematerializing both their clothes to bring her flush against his body with nothing to impede the flow of energy. Her slender body might be the weight of a child’s but it was far more feminine than he’d expected. The curves of her breasts where they pressed against his arm…they were full and peaked with hardened
72
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon nipples. Her head rested against his shoulder, her white hair spilling down over them both. Her pale cheek was so close, her mouth parted and more tempting than he could deny. He dipped and brushed his lips over her cheek, turning her to kiss her mouth. Just a light brush and then she responded, her lips pressing back with a spark of desire that set him solidly aflame. Her hands moved up his arm, pausing at his biceps, while she continued to kiss him, gradually deepening the passion until their tongues sparred in slow combat. Her body filled with life. She slid her long bare thigh over his, arching her body against him. Her hot, damp sex came flush over his cock, searing him to the bone. “Maya.” Dear Lord he wanted her. Yet did he dare? His usual brand of sex was brutal and always fatal. Bringing his emotions to life, or releasing his control in any way, could tear the reigns free from his death magic. But his death magic hadn’t harmed her, was in fact just what she needed to survive. This tiny bombshell of a woman, who at first glance was far too frail to handle him, might just be the one to tame him and offer him what he wanted most. Love. As he nibbled at her lips and stroked his hands over Maya’s body, the thought of love finally seemed to be a real possibility. He could hold her and not bring her pain. He could fuck her and offer nothing but pleasure. So what the hell was stopping him? When her next writhing motion slid her sex over his cock, he rose to the temptation, bucking his hips upward, driving the head of his cock into her. Her body clenched around him, but not in rejection. She rocked her hips, taking him deeper, and deeper, full to the hilt until they both moaned in the pleasure of joining. Her mouth came back to his, biting down on his lower lip, demanding him to offer up everything. Her fingers bound his lips to hers. Her tongue battled him into submission, controlling the kiss as well as the rocking motion of riding his shaft. She forced him back, flat on the altar, her body flowing over him, a silken wave of decadent seduction. His hands rested on her ass, but he was passive beneath her, reveling in every sensation. Control was everything to him, but for her, he gave up everything. She ruled his mind
73
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon and his body. Where she led, he followed. On and on she rode him, biting and clawing and bringing forth every pleasure. It was perfect. It was everything he’d ever dreamed sex could be, if only he’d been born someone else. This wild sharing of passion stormed over his heart. It tore a path of destruction, shattering him, leaving him begging for salvation. And when Maya rocked upward to arch over him like a goddess, she was so beautiful, he came apart under her. He cupped her breasts in wonder. Her skin glowed like moonlight. The light burst out from between his darkly tanned fingers. Her rich brown eyes flashed pure passion. She was magnificent. She clenched around him, as her orgasm hit. Her body became something brilliant, flooding the room with power and life…and love. Bryck had no defense and wanted none. He climaxed for the first time in his life without guilt or fear of what his pleasure would do to his lover. Maya would survive and even thrive. And through her, his magic would harm no other. As she relaxed against his chest, he cradled her tenderly, sneaking a glance around to be sure their assumption was right. His unit and their lovers stood lining the walls. They were safe and unharmed, but something was amiss. He looked to Wyk and found her in Dyce’s arms with tears streaming down her face. Tears of joy? The black shadow was gone from Flayvor. In fact, he felt no death in the room. If anything his demons felt more full of life than was normal. The whole room vibrated with life and love. But that wasn’t right. He should have felt a dead area around the vampire. Dante at least should have felt different… Yet he stood between Mayce and Spyce, whole and well. Bryck sat up, materializing a sheet to wrap about him and Maya. As he righted himself, Maya sagged in his arms. Maya! he screamed mentally. He panicked. What could he do? How could he help her? “You never panic.” Wyk’s calm words did nothing but her hand
74
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon over the amulet stopped Bryck’s thundering heart with a lurch. He couldn’t panic. For him to lose it would cost everyone, including Maya, far too much. Instead he shifted his weight to the floor, lifting Maya up in his arms. But once up, he was still lost for an objective. He was without a plan or even a clue as to what he could do to make this right. “Take her to hell.” Wyk leaned in close, stroking Maya’s hair back. Then she eased the leather cord of the amulet over Maya. “This will protect her long enough. Take her to your father.” “Eios?” Why to his father? He hadn’t willingly spoken to the old man in several centuries. “I don’t even know how to find him.” Wyk shrugged. “Then let her die.” “Fuck that.” The suggestion was cold, especially coming from Wyk. If his father was the one who could fix this, then that was who he’d find. “Rayce, take everyone back to the compound. I will meet you there, when I can.” He dematerialized, carrying himself and Maya to the royal wing of hell. The glossy marbled walls and their soft glow lacked their usual comfort. Not that he’d sought out the royal wing often. No, it was his father’s domain, not his own. But for Maya he’d face the devil himself or in this case Lord Pahele, the ruler over all the Tascryn demons. Only Pahele would know for sure where his father was. Before he could push open the elaborate double doors to the throne room, they swung open before him. Pahele himself held them and motioned him inside. Come to think of it, perhaps the lord could help him and he wouldn’t have to face his father at all… “No, son. Your father is here, awaiting your arrival.” Eios stood to the opposite side of the doorway. He didn’t speak but his menacing black form advanced. The threat in his presence was the kind that released the bowels of lesser beings. Right now, Bryck felt a little bit on the lesser side. It was all he could do to keep from pulling Maya back, protecting her from this demon who was his father. He didn’t and wasn’t the least bit surprised when Lord Pahele left them alone.
75
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon “Wyk said you could help her. Can you?” Eios brushed his fingers over the amulet. “I can and I see Wyk believes I should.” There was a deeper meaning to the words that eluded Bryck. “Why wouldn’t you help her? If not for me then because she saved the lives of some of our kind.” “Let me wake her and perhaps she can prove she deserves my mercy.” Eios lifted the amulet from around her neck and then rested his huge palm over her forehead. The minutes crept by, a frozen river of time while Bryck waited for some sign that Maya would live. His heart slowed while fear twisted in his gut. Fear…for a tiny girl who had changed his whole world in the space of a single night. What if she didn’t survive? Would he be able to go on as if he hadn’t been reborn in her arms? Could he go back to his duty, facing each day with dread and knowing the best he could hope for was to get through it without hurting anyone he cared for? Given enough time would he forget that possible future that had tempted him to dream of life with Maya, with a kind of balance he’d never known? His eyes closed and silently prayed to the Creator. He prayed for her life and for her to find freedom from her curse. He prayed for the chance to offer his love to her, to tell her how much she had changed him. His prayers were answered when her hand cupped his cheek. His tearing eyes opened to meet her equally damp gaze. “I thought I’d lost you.” He lifted her in his arms to kiss her upturned lips. She curled into the embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Not so fast, son,” Eios interrupted. “There are issues that still require sorting out before there is any cause for celebration.” At his first word, Maya tensed and pulled away from Bryck’s kiss. Her whole world trembled between joy and desolation. “Eios…” She breathed before turning to face her worst nightmare. The beast stood there before them like judge, jury and executioner, a role she was sure he would be supremely comfortable with. “Hello again, Maya. This must be further proof that the Creator and
76
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon his minions have a perverse sense of humor.” “Put me down, Bryck.” Her lover hesitated, and then relented, lowering her feet to the floor. She clasped his hand to show she wasn’t abandoning him. The contact offered her strength when nothing else would. “I somehow doubt this counts as humorous.” He inclined his head. “Perhaps not.” It had been centuries since she’d seen Eios. Time that had crawled by with the agony of the curse he had laid on her. “I should have known you two were related.” She should have put it together sooner. Although Bryck was considerably lighter in skin color to Eios’ midnight hue, the similarity in their features should have given them away. Bryck’s hand tightened over hers. “He is my father even if he prefers it weren’t so.” “I have no regret in siring you, but this is about your mate, not our broken family.” Eios was as hard a bastard as she’d ever seen. He turned her way. “You have atoned for your sins for these many years. Perhaps if you regret your choices then the time for forgiveness may be upon you.” She didn’t want to rehash the past in front of Bryck. Then again, perhaps that was the perfect punishment. She finally found him and now would lose any chance of his love because of her past mistakes. “So he doesn’t know.” Eios glared at her angrily. “Would you have ever told him about your past? Would you have told him about your crimes?” Would she have? “Maybe eventually. It’s not the kind of thing that usually comes up on first dates.” If they could even call this screwed up night a date. “Bryck, you need to know why she was punished. Why I cursed her with feeding on death.” Eios spoke right over Bryck’s objections. “Then be naïve, but should she attempt to kill another child, she will be offered no leniency.” The silence that fell froze her soul. No matter if Bryck said it didn’t matter. The truth would drive him away. Curse or no curse, she’d be alone again. “Don’t you care what he is?” Eios asked and she knew he had read
77
Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon her thoughts. Did she care? “I am not afraid of death demons, but that isn’t what you mean, is it? You expect me to fear his demonic form because in a small way there is a resemblance to the one I was sold to, who called himself my husband.” “His children may be such as he is. Will you sacrifice them for your own gain?” Eios snarled. She was sure that she was about to die and surprised that she would be killed for something she hadn’t done. She’d done nothing but help Bryck, trying to rescue his demon even before they’d met, even before he’d proven how good a man he was. Yet here was Eios condemning her for crimes she hadn’t committed and in fact found horrifying to even consider. It really was a shame that her judge didn’t know how much she’d changed in the past centuries. No, he’d know if he cared to, but the emotional fool didn’t care. “I won’t let you mistreat another child.” His hand reached for her. She was about to die. She shrank back and came hard against Bryck’s chest, trapped. For a second she remembered her helplessness with Quetzalcoatl but Bryck was different. Even his beastly form had been different. He’d never hold her against his will. He’d never take away her choices or allow any others to do so. But could he forgive her for her past? Bryck knocked away his father’s arm. “You have no right to judge another’s parenting skills. After how you’ve fucked up my life, you will back off of Maya.” Eios calmed at once, his black eyes turning to ice. “She bartered the life of her daughter so that she could have the powers of a goddess. Her child would have been killed if not for Wyk’s and my intervention. If you trust this one, you need to know what she is capable of.” “Now I know.” Bryck’s arm came around her. “And now you can stay the fuck out of my life.” Bryck turned them away from Eios as if the powerful Daelyn didn’t exist. And Eios must have understood the hint. He dematerialized with a puff of angry smoke. She loved him for that. But could he love her back? The only way she’d know is if she told the whole truth. “Bryck…I need to tell you what

Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon happened.” “No, you don’t.” He pulled her around in his embrace, cradling her tight in his arms. “I want to.” Or at least she wanted him to know. She almost wished his bastard of a father had spilled all the beans to save her having to be the one to dredge up the past. “I did all he said, but not for the reasons he thought. I was given to the feathered serpent god. I think my father thought I would be eaten or ravished, but instead I was kept, like a pet.” She sucked in her breath, forcing herself to be fair. “He thought I was cared for, but all I saw was the short leash I was kept on by my father’s guards. You see, I ran once and they knew I’d run again.” “You were a slave.” “Yes and no. He was not unkind to me. The serpent offered me power and taught me ways to use it. But it was a small joy compared to freedom. In my youth I saw the power he offered and thought to make a deal with another for more power. But I owned nothing.” Her mind slid back to those months of desperation. “Then I became pregnant and a deal was offered to me. I could trade my child for power and freedom. I was young and foolish. I agreed.” “What happened?” “The child was born and taken away, a daughter taken for the sacrifice. I thought I would be free until Eios came to me that night. For my crime, he cursed me to live off the death of others.” She shuddered. “Before that first season was over, I knew how far I’d fallen. I had to commit such terrible deeds, just to stay alive…it wasn’t worth it. I tried to end my life, over and over, and still I survived and hungered.” “Did you ever find out what happened to your daughter?” She shook her head. “I have thought about her often over the centuries. Would she have had my brown eyes or his blue ones? Would she be human or serpent? That is more burden than the curse ever was. I’ll never know what the future would have held for her. She was killed because of me.” The doors slammed shut behind them. “Sorry to be eavesdropping like adolescent Akyrn,” Lord Pahele said in his ripple smooth rumble.

She lives and is well.” Maya’s heart stopped. She’d have fallen if not for Bryck’s strong arms. “How can that be?” she whispered. “It was Eios’ duty to watch over the child’s father. A certain Akyrn you know was helping him and saw fit to steal away a newborn. Wyk took the infant and a small bribe offered to her for the deed she probably would have done anyhow.” Pahele smiled at them both. “I can tell you where she is, but first we need to see to lifting your curse. Since your sacrifice was never performed, it seems you have been punished for something you never did.” “But…” She was speechless. “You do wish to have the curse lifted and return to being mortal, do you not?” Pahele arched an eyebrow in question. Her mind whirled with the sudden information. Her daughter was alive! She hadn’t caused her death. And now, life without the curse… Sounded too good to be true. She reached up to hug Bryck and that was when it hit her, they could have a future. They could actually be together. He hadn’t shunned her for her past. And she could handle him changing into a dae‐gon. He really was nothing like the other one. He was Bryck. He’d stood by her against his own father. “I don’t want the curse lifted.” She kissed Bryck. “Together we are balanced. If I’m human, who will feed off your power?” Pahele clapped his hands together like thunder. “Excellent!” The slender woman at his side caught his hand. “And when you’re ready to meet your daughter, come to see me.” They walked out, leaving them alone again. “Did you mean it?” Bryck asked. “I do.” Their lips came together for another deeper kiss. This time when they parted, they were both breathless. “Now we need to head back to your compound. You have demons to command.”

Chapter Fifteen Bryck stared in wonder at Maya. She’d chosen to stay with him. He didn’t understand why but somehow he wanted to show her what it meant to him. She smiled up at him. “What do we do now?” “I can’t believe you gave up the cure to be with me…” “Bryck, you are my cure. When you said I offered you balance, didn’t you see, you do the same for me. You are my cure and I couldn’t wish for a better future. What we have now offers possibilities I’d never even considered.” She pulled his head down and pressed their lips together. The inferno of desire from earlier burst awake. Their tongues tangled. Their hands wandered, caressed. The moment stretched on and on. Until the doors slammed open and three Akyrn darted in, skidded to a stop and then fled with yelled apologies. Maya laughed happily. “Perhaps we should leave hell before we corrupt any young demons.” Her happiness was a thing of beauty. In that moment he knew he was lost. He’d give her anything she asked for, any time she asked. But he had a suspicion of what she might want. “We can go find your daughter. We can go now. I can feel how much you want to see her and be sure it wasn’t a lie.” Her eyes brightened, but she shook her head slowly. “No, not today. I don’t want to rush.”

I’ve thought she was dead for so long, and now… I don’t even know her name, or if she knows who I am, or what I did.” She ducked her head against his chest. “What’s wrong?” They still had so much to work out. What if she didn’t want to stay with him or, worse, only wanted to stay to balance their magic? When she didn’t answer, he caught her chin and forced her to meet his gaze. “Why do you look worried?” “What your father said about your children—“ He stopped her, brushing a thumb over her lips. “If you don’t want to risk my children being Dae‐gon forms, we don’t have to have any. I don’t care so long as you stay with me, so long as you…love me.” She blinked her brightening eyes, easing the tears away as well as the white light until all that remained was soft brown and filled with joy. “I do love you, Bryck. I’m not the same silly girl I was back then, and even if I was, you’re not some stranger who took away my freedom. I love you and I’ll love any children we have, too.” He lifted her into his arms, bringing their lips together again. This time the kiss was long and sweet. He couldn’t bear to break apart so he whispered into her mind, I love you, Maya. I offer you all that I am and all I’ll ever be. Let’s go back to the compound so I can show you how I feel. Yes, yes, yes. Can we go straight to your private chamber? Much as I like your demons, I want you to myself for a few hours. Or a few weeks… Or a few lifetimes… The End
