Mort owns a sports store. He sells lots of sports gear. In his store, Mort has caps, shorts, and things of that sort. 2
G2_Book_18.indd 2
2/1/07 8:44:27 AM
I like every sport, but I like soccer more than most of them. I like soccer shirts, shorts, and cleats. Mort has lots of them for sale. 3
G2_Book_18.indd 3
2/1/07 8:44:33 AM
On weekends, I go to Mort’s store after I finish chores at home. I can look at things Mort sells for a long time. I never get bored. Mort likes soccer, too. He knows more about soccer than any person I have ever met before. 4
G2_Book_18.indd 4
2/1/07 8:44:35 AM
I am on a soccer team. Mort always asks me the score of my last game. He shows me soccer gear and tells me what it is for.

If we get a bad storm on the day of a game, I will go to Mort’s store. I help Mort cut cord off boxes. Mort gives me other chores that will help him. I like doing chores for Mort. He lets me trade my work for sports gear. Some days I just help Mort for free. 6
G2_Book_18.indd 6
2/7/07 1:19:32 PM
It is hard to decide which thing to get at Mort’s store. I search the store for something that is just right. It might be a shirt or shorts.

At the end of the day, Mom picks me up at the store. I hear her honk her horn outside. I wave to Mort. He knows I will be back before long.

A seahorse is a kind of fi sh. For a fi sh, it looks mighty strange! A seahorse has no scales, just a bony frame. It has a long horny snout and a head that sort of looks like a horse. A seahorse stands up as it swims. It wraps its long tail around seaweed to stay in one spot.
10
G2_Book_18.indd 10
2/1/07 8:45:10 AM
Seahorses seem strange, but it would be hard to fi nd more interesting fi sh than them! 11
G2_Book_18.indd 11
2/1/07 8:45:14 AM
Seahorses can be found near shore, in forests of sea grass, or on coral reefs. Seahorses blend in with the background. This keeps them safe from big fi sh that might eat them. 12
G2_Book_18.indd 12
8/6/07 2:39:14 PM
Seahorses can be sorted into about forty kinds. Their sizes range from one inch to more than twelve inches. Real horses go fast, but not seahorses. Seahorses use their dorsal fi ns to go forward, little bit by bit. These dorsal fi ns flap back and forth more than a thousand times each minute!
13
G2_Book_18.indd 13
2/7/07 1:19:45 PM
Now here is the most interesting thing about seahorses. The father seahorse hatches eggs and cares for seahorse babies. 14
G2_Book_18.indd 14
2/1/07 8:45:29 AM
A father seahorse holds little seahorse eggs in its pouch. Tiny seahorse babies are born in this pouch. The father seahorse tends them until they can go forth.
15
G2_Book_18.indd 15
2/1/07 8:45:33 AM
When they get older, seahorse babies learn to swim. They may form packs and use their tails to hold on to each other. It is time for them to go off on their own! 16

A courtyard is an outside space surrounded on each side by buildings. You reach some courtyards by going through a gate. You reach other courtyards by going under an arch.
18
G2_Book_18.indd 18
2/1/07 8:45:42 AM
It is hard to see inside many courtyards from the street. You must go through homes or buildings to reach them. Courtyards can have many sides. This courtyard has four sides. Homes surround its four sides. Gardens fi ll its middle.

People have made courtyards for a long time. This castle in France has a stone courtyard. Tourists visit this castle and look at the buildings on the four sides of its courtyard.
20
G2_Book_18.indd 20
2/1/07 8:45:50 AM
Courtyards can be big or little. Courtyards can be paved with things such as brick or stone. Courtyard paths may be dirt or grass. The pouring rain bounces off stone and brick paths in this courtyard.
21
G2_Book_18.indd 21
2/1/07 8:45:55 AM
People can plant gardens and trees in courtyards. Plants such as flowers, beans, pumpkins, and gourds can grow in courtyard gardens. See the gourds that grow in this courtyard garden.
22
G2_Book_18.indd 22
2/1/07 8:45:58 AM
People use some courtyards to park cars. Other courtyards are safe places for kids to play. This courtyard is not for cars. It is for people to enjoy. This boy found a four-leaf clover in this grassy courtyard.

Birds like birdbaths and ponds in courtyards. These four birds sip water through the course of a hot day. Courtyards can be fun places to explore. See if you can fi nd one near your home.

“Mom must nearly be finished with work. Can we meet her at the courthouse?” Courtney asked. Mom was a judge and spent her days in court. Dad said, “That is a great idea. Get your black jacket. You need to look nice at the courthouse.”
26
G2_Book_18.indd 26
2/7/07 1:19:56 PM
Courtney and Dad chatted on the way. It was four blocks to the courthouse. “I might be a judge when I grow up or maybe a writer like you,” Courtney told Dad.
27
G2_Book_18.indd 27
8/6/07 2:39:24 PM
Then they passed the Courtyard Lunch Spot. Courtney told Dad, “Maybe I will be a waitress, pouring tea and serving lunch.” Further on their course, they passed fourteen tourists. “Maybe I will take tourists on tours around the world!” Courtney told Dad.
28
G2_Book_18.indd 28
2/1/07 8:46:22 AM
Then Courtney spied a man planting flowers. “Maybe I will be a farmer,” Courtney told Dad. “I can grow flowers, corn, and gourds!”
29
G2_Book_18.indd 29
2/1/07 8:46:27 AM
Then they passed a golf course. “Maybe I will be a golfer. It would be fun to be on a golf course each day,” Courtney told Dad.
30
G2_Book_18.indd 30
2/1/07 8:46:31 AM
Then they passed under an arch leading to the courtyard by the courthouse. Courtney liked courtyards. “Maybe I will be a builder,” Courtney told Dad. “I will make buildings and courtyards where children can play.”
31
G2_Book_18.indd 31
2/7/07 1:20:00 PM
Then they spied an artist painting pictures. Dad smiled and told Courtney, “You like to paint. You can use your paints to make pictures.” Courtney smiled. “Of course,” she said. Then she hugged Dad.
