Meg likes to be outside. She dug a garden bed on a cloudy day in May. She planted seeds in the brown ground and watched them sprout. Now her garden is crowded with plants.

One day, Meg came outside and found a brown groundhog in her garden. “Cloudy and Browny!” Meg yelled out loud. “Come down to the garden. See this brown groundhog!”

Cloudy ran out of the barn and down to the garden. Browny came down from a round hill. Cloudy and Browny spotted the groundhog. It had a round body and brown fur. It was eating a mound of beans.

“Get out!” Meg yelled loudly. “Stop eating now!” The groundhog turned around proudly and ate green beans. Meg frowned. She clapped her hands loudly and counted to ten. The groundhog still ate.

Meg pouted. “That groundhog is about to eat up my beans,” she said. “What can we do about this?” Cloudy made a loud sound with his feet. Browny sounded her bell loudly. The groundhog leaped up and ran out of the garden. It raced around fences and slid down a brown hole in the ground.

Meg put her arms around Cloudy and Browny. “I am so proud of you!” she said.

Do you like digging around in dirt? What if you found a surprise while digging in the ground? At times, towns have found surprises when digging deep holes for new buildings.
10

Digging downtown may sound dull, but a hole in the ground can be full of countless surprises. Things like coins, plates, and old brown jugs can tell about what life was like years ago. 11

Big rigs got in gear when this town needed a new town building. The rigs dug in the brown ground and piled dirt in mounds. Crowds gazed at them, but Stan and Beth frowned and spoke out.
12

“Please stop now!” Stan shouted. “We must see what surprises can be found around this place.” The digging stopped. Men from the crowd slipped down in the hole. The crowd gazed at them digging by hand with rounded blades. 13

“He found a mound of round beads!” Stan shouted. “Who left them in this place?” “He found toys and a tin crown!” shouted Beth. “Who played around this place years ago?” 14

Stan and Beth’s friends found cloudy jars and a brown cowbell. They found round buttons and a flute that made sounds. They counted and cleaned each thing they found.

Those surprises can now be found at the town building. People from around the county come to town to see them. They feel proud about what was found in the ground of this town. 16
