Introduction This book is the first to explain basic pop-up techniques comprehensively, and to show how they have been used creatively by professional paper engineers, amateurs and students. It attempts to show that, although in the hands of a master a pop-up can be a remarkably sophisticated construction, the techniques themselves are delightfully simple

and can be used creatively by anyone. The only requirements are a few easily learned hand skills and a little imagination - but then, that is no more than any art or craft requires. Defining exactly what is, or is not, a pop-up is an awkward and perhaps pedantic exercise, but an important one. For the purposes of this book, a pop-up is a self-
erecting, three-dimensional structure, formed by the action of opening a crease. This definition does not include rotating disks, lift-up flaps, pull tabs and other two-dimensional paper-engineered devices commonly, if mistakenly, described as pop-ups.
