A 1 Night Stand Story
Tempting a Cowboy
Chapter One “This is going to be so much fun!” Mia drew in a ragged breath and frowned at Sarah, one of her two best friends, as they fought their way through the crowd to baggage claim at McCarran airport. Thousands of miles from home, Sarah’s excitement was more than annoying, and the urge to duct tape her friend’s mouth became stronger with each step Mia took. She couldn’t believe she was actually in Vegas. On a dare. “Sarah, zip it,” Brenda warned, as they pushed past a couple talking on their cell phones. Sarah glared. “What? We’re in Las Vegas. They say what happens here stays here.” “Oh, get over yourself. That new kick of yours is starting to get on my nerves.” Brenda hiked up the shoulder strap of her purse as they forged on. Leave it to Brenda to voice her opinions out loud, considering it was her fault Mia was there in the first place. “Mia, tell me, aren’t you excited at all?” Sarah ran to keep up with them. “Yes. Oodles.” Mia couldn’t keep the sarcasm out of her tone. Signing up for Madame Eve’s 1NightStand service was insane, but she’d gone along with it just to prove she wasn’t the loser or recluse her friends believed her to be. So what if she liked hiding in her apartment and reading? So what if she didn’t like to go out and socialize? Brenda laughed. “Oh, stop. You’ll have fun. I promise.” Mia grunted. Brenda’s idea of a good time was never simple. It was a wonder three women so different from each other could be best friends. But then, trouble made a habit of following them, and as long as they had one another, everything usually worked out. “I know you’ll have fun, for sure.” “You will too, because I’m determined to have a blast,” Sarah added.

Mia sighed. Sarah was on a reform kick. Bored with being the good girl in town, she’d been the first to agree to Brenda’s insane idea. And here they were, in Vegas, set up to meet strange men for one night. Possibilities were unpredictable. “Don’t tell me you want to chicken out? We already paid Madame Eve. Besides, if we don’t show up, it’s a breach of contract.” Brenda stopped short in Mia's path. She and Sarah came to a standstill. “I’m fine.” Mia forced the words past her lips even though her heart pounded a hundred miles a minute. It’d started as a dare, but once reality hit, Mia couldn’t get out of the situation without disappointing her friends. The idea of being alone with a stranger didn’t scare her as much as her family finding out what they were up to. When she’d packed and informed her mother and brother she was going away for a girls’ weekend in the Bahamas, they’d been more than happy that she wasn’t putting in extra hours at the library. She’d been lying through her teeth about going to Nassau. Her brother was supposed to be in Vegas for a meeting and if she ran into Evan, her life was over. Brenda eyed her warily. “You need this. Maybe it’ll keep your head out of those damn books for more than an hour.” Mia sighed as they continued on their trek to baggage claim. “Are you sure you guys want to do this?” “I do, I do,” Sarah chanted. Mia shared a look with Brenda and they laughed. Sarah was the ditzy one between them. It had to be from hanging out with all those kindergarten kids as a teacher. “We know you are. You were the first to agree to the craziness.” “Hey, at least I wasn’t the one being impossible.” Sarah’s eyebrow rose. “A cowboy, really?” Mia shrugged. What did she know? Cowboys were a dime a dozen in Texas, but it wasn’t like they were lining up outside her door. “Seriously, not like we don’t have enough of those at home. You can walk out of the library and just grab one off the street,” Brenda teased with a snort. Sarah giggled. “Well, you know they wouldn’t be hiding in the book aisles waiting for her to pick them up.” 2
Tempting a Cowboy
Brenda had to add her sarcastic input. She tapped her finger against her chin and looked to the side thoughtfully as they started walking again. “Now, which section of the Dewey Decimal System would a cowboy prefer to hang out at? Oh, I know. Probably where they keep all the cattle books or copies of Playboy.” They broke out in peals of laugher while Mia kept quiet. As a librarian for their small town, she loved her job, loved her life, but she had to admit, maybe her way of living was a little bland. Not one with Sarah’s energy or Brenda’s snide humor, Mia kept to herself. It didn’t help to have an overprotective brother either. At twenty-four, she lived the life of a spinster. So maybe she needed to do this more than she thought. What did she have to lose? “I just don’t get why the hotel has to put on a masquerade in the middle of summer.” “That’s one of the highlights of the season at Castillo, Las Vegas. Madame Eve is known to connect her clients through this chain,” Brenda answered. “So why did we pick Vegas?” Sarah shrugged. “We didn’t, Madame Eve did.” Mia frowned. It made her even more nervous to know her brother was in the same city. Evan had always looked after her. As a busy computer company owner, he’d been the one to take care of the family since their father had died three years ago. “I swear if I see my brother, I’m going to tell him it’s both your fault.” “Woman, you need to learn to relax.” Brenda pivoted around to face her when they reached their assigned baggage area. “I do relax.” Mia hated her friend’s tone. It usually meant one thing: criticism. And it wasn’t that she couldn’t take it, but hearing it from her girlfriends reminded her she was too set in her ways. At the moment, her anxiety continued to expand in her chest, worse than when she’d first boarded the plane. Brenda flipped her dark brown hair over one shoulder and crossed her arms. “It’s time you get out of your shell and actually live your life.” “Like you are? You work more than I do. Every day you tell me how you’re struggling at your flower shop and not making enough money to pay the bills. I think you need to relax.” Mia bit her inner cheek. She hadn’t meant to sound so defensive, but Brenda’s words made her feel incapable and small. Pain flickered in Brenda’s blue eyes. “Maybe.” 3

Mia lifted her hand, but dropped it when her friend turned to face the crowd gathered around the baggage carousel. Guilt surged through her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that. I still think this is a stupid idea.” Brenda shrugged. “You can back out and go crawl into your hole as usual. Continue to let your brother rule your life.” Mia’s hands clenched at her sides. As much as she loved her brother, she’d had enough of his control. “No, I’m here. I’m going to go through with it.” Her friend raised an eyebrow. “We’ll see when you actually meet your date. If you make it to the party.” “Oh, come on, girls. Don’t be mean to each other.” Sarah wrapped an arm around their shoulders. “We’re in Vegas! The possibilities are endless. And no one at home is going to know what kind of trouble we’re getting ourselves into.” Mia shared a look with Brenda. The corners of her mouth twitched with amusement. “Did they drug your drink on the plane?” Confusion encompassed Sarah’s pale features. “No. I had the same wine you guys did, remember?” “Or she could be gearing up to get laid tonight in her little stripper costume. Right, Bo Peep?” Brenda threw her a grin. Mia laughed. “I’d rather be Bo Peep than Scarlett O’Hara, Ms. O’Hara.” “Yup, that’s me,” Brenda retorted. “Looking for my Rhett Butler, but at least I won’t have to worry about some dusty cowboy shooting my sheep.” With a snort, Mia ducked from Sarah’s arm and grabbed her suitcase off the rotating belt. “Who cares as long as he takes off his chaps for me?” The girls laughed. Glancing at her friends, Mia felt a jolt of confidence. Maybe this date was just what she needed to break out of her shell.

Chapter Two Shane McCormick could feel eyes on him. He tried to ignore the muffled laughter and voices of women in the elevator as he stared up at the brightly lit numbers. He had his baby sister to blame. So what if he didn’t have time to date? Or get laid for that matter. It didn’t mean she had to take such drastic measures as signing him up for this…this…dating service. As the CEO of McCormick Technology, he was the inventor of StormX, the future security system that would make all others look like crap. But there he was, dressed as a gun-slinging cowboy at a costume party. The elevator doors opened and he rushed out. Pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose and tugging his hat lower over his forehead, he tried to calm himself, but the only thing he could hear at the moment were his boots thudding against the marble floor and his heart beating heavily. He was never going to live this down if anyone from his hometown found out what Lily had gotten him into: a blind date with Bo Peep. As a cowboy, he even had on chaps. Chaps! Born and raised in Rover, Texas, the only time he’d ever dressed in leather was when he helped herd cattle on the family ranch, or at least tried. But then, he’d never really lassoed anything in his life, much less hung around to watch the cows calve. He was a geek. Every pore and nerve in his body spoke only computers. What did he know about women? With a sigh, he continued through the lobby and spotted the sign for the Castillo Masquerade. He could handle this. He’d just treat it like a business deal, share a drink with the woman, and then go back to his room so he could finish up the proposal for his presentation and fix some of the bugs he’d found in his program. If he could get the government to buy into his system, he could kick the other computer giants to the side and build up his reputation. But the only one he

worried more than anything about was his number one competitor: Evan Hunt, his rival since birth. They’d competed in everything, from winning spelling bees to science fairs. They’d even attended the same college and both had graduated at the top of their class. But Shane had the upper hand this time; he’d found inside connections to get a meeting with the government agency. The deal was his, no matter what. He just couldn’t wait until Hunt heard the news in Rover. First, he had to deal with the date he didn’t want. He chuckled to himself as he entered the ballroom and his eyes widened. Couples in ball gowns, tuxedoes, and costumes of every kind cluttered the massive dance floor. As he strode to the bar in the corner, he noticed he was the only idiot dressed as a cowboy. Good going, Lily. His sister was never going to see the light of day once he got through with her. Spotting the numerous men in normal-looking evening wear throwing smirks his way, he’d have given anything to call his sister for a tongue lashing, but his mama taught him never to be rude to any lady. He’d just have to find Bo Peep and let her down gently. Hopefully, he wouldn’t offend her in any way. Nodding to the bartender, he opened his mouth to order his usual vodka and club soda, but something made him ask for a beer instead. Maybe it was the memories of hanging out on the ranch before he’d moved to the city after college, or the need to have something to save his pride and masculinity. The bartender laid out a napkin and grabbed an ice-cold bottle from the glass refrigerator behind the bar. “Nice costume.” Shane nodded, setting down a twenty on the counter. He wouldn’t call his getup a costume since it came out of his own closet, but he didn’t bother to correct the young man. From the corner of his eye, he caught a woman in a red dress give him a look of intent with her sultry lips and obvious smile. A blush rose in his cheeks and he pushed his glasses up his nose. “Is this a common event here?” he asked the bartender. The man laughed. “Sure thing. Everyone loves these parties.”

Shane grunted, grabbed his beer, and faced the dance floor. The lights had dimmed, casting a white glow over the couples laughing and moving against each other to the sensual beat that permeated the room. He searched the crowd. His sister had told him to keep an eye out for Bo Peep and her hoop dress. He wondered if this Bo Peep had sheep. A smile cracked across his face as he took a pull from his beer. Of all the costumes a woman would pick, he couldn’t imagine the outfit to be flattering or sexy. He visualized the Old Victorian gowns he’d seen on the history channel. Clearing his throat, he ignored the looks thrown his way and kept his gaze on the dance floor. He wasn’t used to the attention. Not one to be in the public eye, he preferred to hide in his lab with his ten big screens and 16-core processors and watch his baby do magic. “Howdy, cowboy.” Shane froze. The voice made the hair on his neck rise. He slowly turned. He took in the dainty feet encased in white, strappy four-inch heels, thin ribbon wrapped around delicate ankles up long, slender legs showcased by a poofy, ruffled skirt that balled out in the back. His mouth dried as his gaze paused at the bountiful swells above the white corset then trailed over the smooth expanse of skin above her cleavage. He stopped at the sensual full lips—pink, glossy, and delectable—and he swallowed hard. His cock throbbed in answer behind the zipper of his jeans. Heat seared every pore in his body as he watched her blow out a breath of air. Visions of what her mouth could do to him ran through his mind, and he had to shake his head at the thoughts. Desire gripped him like a tight fist clutching his balls and he groaned. He’d never had such a reaction in his life. But then her words jerked him to reality. “Is this a joke?”

Chapter Three Mia crossed her arms over her chest and watched as Shane’s gaze dropped to her breasts then lifted back to her face. Confusion shone from his silver eyes, and she frowned. He was more handsome than she remembered. And he was dressed as a cowboy. What were the odds her date would turn out to be her brother’s rival? “Well?” Her toe tapped the floor, the strings around her ankles stretching to accommodate the tensing of her calves. Shane set his beer on the counter. “What do you mean?” “What are you doing here? You’re thousands of miles from home.” He frowned. “Do I know you?” Mia bit her lip. Obviously he didn’t remember her, but she guessed it wasn’t all that surprising since she always hid at work or in her apartment. “Don’t you know who I am?” He shook his head. “Should I?” Frustration welled in her chest. Every warning, every complaint her brother had voiced about this man flew out of her mind. Brenda and Sarah’s words rang in her brain instead. You’re always such a recluse. Stop hiding yourself or you’ll die in that library you call home and no one will know it. “Are you here because of Madame Eve?” “Yes.” He shoved his hands in his pockets, and looked out into the crowd. She followed his gaze and frowned. Should she tell him who she was? Did she want to? From the corner of her eye, she took in the way his chaps hugged his jeaned thighs, the white button-down shirt stretched across his broad chest, and the tautness of his jaw. He was more handsome close up. She’d seen him in town at the diner across from the library, but she’d never spoken to him since Evan had always warned her of his dislike for his competitor. He shifted uncomfortably on his feet, and a blush rose to his cheeks before his attention turned back to her. It was quite adorable.

“I’ve never met you before….” Shane tugged his hat lower over his forehead and leaned toward her. “We can just call it a night and say that we met, all right?” Mia drew back as if slapped across the face. She’d just arrived and he was ready to leave? Disappointment flared. Was she too ugly? Not hot enough? She glanced down at her costume and killer stilettos. It’d taken every ounce of courage to come to the party and fulfill her end of the contract. And her date didn’t want her. So what could she do? “It’s fine. Thanks for showing up at least.” Before he could say a word, she whirled around and started toward the entrance. A knot formed in her throat. She could go back to the hotel room while Brenda and Sarah were out with their dates and just curl up with a book. It was better that way anyway. She hadn’t really wanted to come and make a fool out of herself. Then why did she feel sick to her stomach? Why did she find it so hard to breathe? Her friends were going to have the time of their lives with their fantasies fulfilled while she’d spend the night alone. And then she’d return home the loner, back to her usual, boring routine because she wasn’t daring enough or brave enough to step outside her limits and make a man want her. Her fists clenched at her sides. She whipped around and stalked back to the cowboy. Determination held her tall. “Buy me a drink.” He jerked his gaze from the dance floor and blinked at her, eyebrows lifting as if he’d never seen her before. The cowboy pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. His hesitation only made her take another step forward. “Okay. Guess we can try this again.” He held out his hand. “I’m Shane.” Mia bit her lip. She wondered if she should reveal herself, but images of him walking away from her flashed in her mind. Drawing in a deep breath, she gripped his fingers. A jolt shot up her arm and she jumped. “Bo Peep.” The corners of his mouth lifted, and a surprising warmth spread through her. “Should I have told you a different name instead?” She grinned. “No. I like the name Shane.” He released her hand and signaled to the waiter. “What would you like to drink, Bo Peep?” 9

“Champagne, please.” Shane told the bartender her order and held out a bar stool for her. She hopped up onto the seat and her hoopskirt flipped up. She gasped and slid off. “Maybe that’s not a good idea.” She looked up to see laughter teasing his lips. “Hey, it’s not funny.” Immediately halting his mirth, he cleared his throat. “I’m sorry.” They shared a smile before she asked him, “What made you decide to sign up with Madame Eve?” He shifted uncomfortably on his feet and glanced around the ballroom. “Actually, it was my sister’s idea.” Her eyebrow lifted. Lily had been the typical cheerleader that all girls wanted to be in high school. Married at twenty-one, she’d been divorced not long after. Last she heard, the woman was living with her parents again. “And you always listen to what your sister tells you?” “No. It’s complicated.” He pushed at his glasses again. “Look, maybe this isn’t going to work. I’d rather we just finish our drink and say that we met, if that’s okay with you.” Hurt and annoyance bit her. The bartender appeared with her glass of champagne. Taking a sip of her drink, she drummed her fingers on the countertop. “I’m sorry if you were expecting to meet someone great, but I figured I’d humor my sister while I’m here for a business trip.” She looked at him from the corner of her eye. Sweat beaded across his brow and his neck turned a deep red. From what she’d gathered from the other librarians, women threw themselves at him, but he’d never appeared interested— whether rumor or truth, she didn’t know, but she would like to find out. She glanced at her reflection in the mirror behind the bar. Her black hair pinned up with a feather barrette clipped to the side, her green eyes bigger than she’d ever seen them, and she was wearing makeup for once in her life. And the guy wasn’t interested…. With a frustrated sigh, she whipped around to face him. “Is it the costume?” She waved a hand over herself. “I don’t usually do this either.” 10
Tempting a Cowboy
He jerked back in response. “No. No. It’s….” Mia let out a sigh. Damn Brenda and her insane ideas. Now she could go tell her friends she’d tried and failed. Put her out in society and she only knew how to make a fool of herself. “I get it. I’m not what you expected. It’s fine.” He frowned. “No, I’m just not—” “Interested, I know.” Mia picked up her glass and downed the bubbly liquid. It tickled the back of her throat, and she set the flute down with a rumble of coughs. A hand patted her on the back as she tried to control the spasms through her body. “Are you okay?” Tears welled in her eyes. “Yeah, I’m fine.” “What I wanted to say was that, I’m just not the type to do things like this. So I don’t know what the protocol is. And I find you very attractive.” That warmth in her chest expanded at his words. Her gaze rose and her breath caught at the smile on his face. His palm continued to rub small circles over her back, and she moved in a little closer. “Well, we are in Vegas….” He swallowed hard, a flash of uncertainty passing over his features. “So, what do we do?” Mia laid a hand on his chest. The muscles jumped under her fingertips. Her heartbeat sped faster. Could she do it? Could she follow through with the night? “Well….” A familiar shout reached her ears. She stiffened and whirled around. Her brother stood glaring down at Sarah, who was dressed in her little corset and garters. What was Evan doing at the party? Panic threw her into action, and she grabbed Shane’s wrist. “Let’s go take a walk in the gardens.” Shane blinked in surprise. “Okay, I guess we can do that.” They worked their way across the dance floor until they reached the French doors. She looked across the room and her gaze searched the crowed. Evan was heading their way, danger radiating from his taut features. With a gasp, she dragged Shane across the terrace to the dimly lit path. “What’s going on?” he asked. “Nothing.” “Bo Peep….” he warned. 11
Clarissa Yip
Finding a dark nook between two tall hedges, she pulled him in and pushed him against the wall until they were hidden from the main path. Shane frowned and glanced over her shoulder. Panic settled in. She couldn’t allow Evan to find them. Before Shane could speak, she flattened herself against him and kissed him. His hat fell to the ground. Shocked at herself, she froze, but then his hands settled on her hips and drew her closer. Her nipples peaked at the hard feel of his chest, and she couldn’t stop herself from rubbing against him. She bit his lower lip and he let out a moan. His nails dug into her skin as her tongue tangled with his. She tasted the beer he’d sipped earlier and a certain maleness she’d never been aware of with another man. When he kissed her back, confidence gave her strength to be bolder. She placed her hands over his chest, taking in the muscles jumping under her touch, then slid her fingers over his stomach. She paused, hovering over his belt. Without another thought, she traced the seam of his zipper. Shane groaned the second she cupped him through his denim. Excitement rushed through her. She’d never been this bold—this free—and she liked it. Her whole body tingled with desire. She wanted to do everything with this man—everything she’d feared, everything she’d never experienced. She leaned back to look into his eyes. “Touch me.” His breath hitched and he kissed her again. His palms brushed the sides of her breasts in an erotic stroke then covered them, teasing the taut buds. The roughness of his hands sent a surge of heat to her core. Images of him sucking her nipples flashed in her mind, and she needed it more than anything. “Touch me,” she demanded again. She pressed into him, moving against him. He felt hard everywhere. He swept his hands down her sides and under her skirt until they curled around her bottom. He gave her a squeeze, and wetness gathered between her legs. “Shane.” She trailed her lips over his jaw as she worked his fly down and brushed over his hardness. She gently drew him out of his jeans and wrapped her fingers around his shaft. Her thumb ran a path from the base to the tip. His size 12

overwhelmed her, tempting her to see how big he actually was, but she had a pretty good idea.... Shane groaned again. “Should we be doing this here?” Nibbling his jaw, she whispered, “Don’t talk. Just touch me.” He lifted her until her legs circled his waist and turned them around until she was against the wall. Wrapping her arms around his shoulders, she held on. His belt dug into her thigh, but she didn’t care. His hand moved over her stomach to slip between her legs, and his fingertips teased the edge of her underwear. She squirmed, anticipating his touch as she bit and licked at the heavily beating pulse below his ear before she returned to his mouth. She gasped the moment she felt the intrusion. Pleasure pierced through her when his thumb flicked over the bundle of nerves and his finger started a rhythm in her wet heat. Kissing him harder, she tightened her hold around his neck. Energy pulsed around her. Her brain muddled, she couldn’t stop to think of her actions. She just wanted the man. Right here. Right now. Biting down a scream that threatened to erupt, she pushed herself against his hand, her legs locking around his waist. “Please ju—” “Mia!” They both stilled. Footsteps pounded on the pavement. “I could have sworn I saw her.” “She’s not here, Evan. I’m serious. She didn’t come with us.” “Sarah, I swear if I find her….” The voices rushed past them then faded down the path. Shane’s grip slackened and he withdrew from her as she slid down the length of him and found purchase. She whimpered at the sudden emptiness and reluctantly released his shoulders before taking a step back. The fierce frown she met forced her to realization. Her cover was blown. “Who the hell are you?”

Chapter Four Shane tucked himself back in his jeans and held in a painful groan as he zipped up his fly. That was Evan who’d walked past, for sure. “Well….” Bo Peep righted her hoops and glanced up at him nervously. “Who are you?” he asked again. Letting out a deep breath, she stood up straighter. “My real name is Mia—Mia Hunt.” Alarm surged through him. “Is this a joke?” He repeated the same words she’d spoken the moment she’d seen him. She shook her head. “I didn’t know I was supposed to meet you. I swear. Nor did I know my brother was going to show up at this hotel.” He recalled she worked at Rover’s town library. Besides seeing her around at the diner, he’d paid no more attention to her than he’d paid to other women. Usually wrapped up in his work, he had no time for relationships. But she was also Hunt’s sister. That particularly meant off-limits. Why hadn’t he recognized her sooner? Suspicion curled around his thoughts. She had been aware of his identity the moment she’d seen him. “You knew who I was.” She bit her lip. In the faint light, he noted the deepening of color, and his cock throbbed behind his zipper. He shuddered at the memory of her tight clasp around his finger, the wetness between her legs. Swallowing hard, he pushed his glasses up his nose. “Look, my friends set me up through Madame Eve. I wasn’t going to go along with it, but I did anyway to prove that I’m not the loser they think I am.” He frowned. “Loser?” She nodded. “I don’t go out much and I’m not into the whole socializing thing.” Neither was he but there he was, under the manipulation of his own sister. He still wanted to wring Lily’s neck. The thought of his appointment tomorrow reminded him of Hunt. “Why is your brother here then?” “He’s supposed to be going to some meeting.”
14
Tempting a Cowboy
His frown deepened. Hunt must have heard of his plans and probably wanted to outdo him. He glanced at his watch. The dim dial showed almost ten. Might as well call it a night now. Sleeping with his rival’s sister was definitely not smart. Reaching down, he picked up his hat and set it back on his head. “I have to go.” Mia gasped as he pivoted and strode onto the path. “So that’s it then?” He stopped and turned around. A flicker of vulnerability shone from her emerald eyes and his heart tightened. “I’m your brother’s enemy.” She sighed. “Did it seem like I cared a moment ago? If I did, I would have hightailed it out of here the moment I realized who you were.” The corners of his mouth lifted at her sass. “Why should I believe you? You could be spying for him for all I know.” Her hand flew to her chest, and he couldn’t help but trail his gaze over the luscious swells of her breasts and her milky bare skin. “That’s unbelievable. I’ve never been so insulted in my life. I’m a good person, Shane McCormick.” He believed her. A little disappointed when she’d walked away with her head bowed, her sudden show of confidence had surprised him. He found her charming, and oh so very attractive—more than attractive. Hot, desirable, and overly tempting. An image of her laid out on his bed had his heartbeat rising. He wanted her, dammit. “I’m sorry.” She glared at him. “I think you owe me more than an apology for insinuating that I’m spying for Evan.” He cocked a brow. “What did you have in mind?” She closed the distance between them until she stood on the path with him. “Bring me to your room, and I’ll tell you.” *** Mia walked calmly next to him as they went back through the French doors and elbowed their way through the crowd. She kept an eye out for her brother, in case Evan found them again and decided to kill her before she lived her life. Images of returning to her boring routine before she had a night with Shane flashed in her mind, and she refused to let that happen. She’d come so far, getting 15

on that plane and letting the hot man touch her in the gardens the way he did just moments ago—she wanted it all. They left the ballroom and moved past the lobby to the elevator. “Why are you so nervous? Are you that scared of your brother?” She glanced at him in surprise. “Why do you ask that?” “Well,” he reached out and stopped her from wringing her hands, “you keep looking around like he’s going to jump out at you.” With a shrug, she gave him a nervous smile. “Habit, especially when I’m doing something I’m not supposed to be doing. Doesn’t matter how old I am. I think I’ll always be intimidated by Evan.” Shane frowned. “He can’t be that bad.” She lifted an eyebrow at him. “You mean, you don’t intimidate your sister?” He laughed, the sound sending a shiver down her spine. “I wish. I think she scares me more.” “I somehow can’t believe that.” Her gaze trailed over him from head to toe. He tightened his hold on her hand as they waited for the elevator doors to open. She liked everything about him: his smile, his laughter, and especially the way he looked at her. It made her feel wanted, something she’d never experienced, but then the only men she’d dated in the past were boys who thought they knew everything about women. Shane intrigued her. “Mia….” The sound of her name passing his lips sent warmth to her core. Her stomach fluttered as she turned to him and placed her hand on his chest. His heartbeat raced under her fingertips. “Before you say anything, I want to tell you that I’m just me. I’m just a woman who is here looking for a good time.” He swallowed hard. “Are you sure you want this? I can’t promise what’s going to happen once we reach my room.” She smiled and rose on her toes, her lips brushing his jaw. “More than anything, cowboy.” He looked down at her then wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her flush against him. “Good, because I want you, too. Badly.”

*** For once, security codes and formulas weren’t running through his mind. The only thing Shane was aware of was the woman pressed against his side. He watched the brightly lit numbers above the elevator doors. Mia cuddled against him. His erection strained against his jeans. He’d never been so turned on. Every touch, every breath he heard from her affected his whole body. He felt out of his element, but the excitement of being with her allowed him to keep his head. A drunk couple shared the car with them. If only we were alone…. Not one to make a spectacle of himself, he had to control his impulses. The urge to push her against the wall, raise her skirt, wrap her legs around his waist, and thrust into her entered his thoughts but he couldn’t disrespect her like that. She was a lady who should be romanced with flowers and champagne. Too bad he wasn’t the type of man who knew how to seduce. He’d had sex, but it’d always been just sex. Mia needed and deserved so much more, even though the only thing he could think of at the moment was feasting on her skin, tasting every inch of her delectable body, and seeing for himself the fullness of her breasts. He’d had one touch but it wasn’t enough. “So, why are you really here in Vegas?” she asked. “Business. My security company has a new system to market, and I’m seeing potential buyers tomorrow.” Usually not one to share his thoughts or anything about his company, he didn’t understand the ease he felt with Mia. He shook his head at himself. It had to be the hormones. “It’s a tough industry to stay afloat in. My brother tries hard to keep up, all the while working the family business, and I understand that the big giants in the market are working to—” “Let’s not talk about your brother.” Even though her knowledge pleased him, Shane didn’t want to think about his enemy. He turned to face her. “Tonight, I’m just a cowboy you met here, and you’re just…Bo Peep—sexy and delectable Bo Peep.” Mia grinned and rose on her toes, until her lips were only a hair away from his. “I like that. A lot…cowboy.” 17

His erection throbbed harder. “Your heart is pounding really fast,” she whispered. “Yeah.” He didn’t know what to say. “Do you do this often?” “What?” Her lashes fluttered to her cheeks. “This. The whole one-night thing.” He frowned. “Do you?” She leaned back. Hesitation flickered in her eyes, and she didn’t answer right away. “Never.” “Me either.” Relief spread through him. He hadn’t realized how tense he’d been waiting for her answer. He pressed his hardness into her stomach. “I can’t think of anything but you.” Mia smiled. Her expression weakened his knees and sent another surge of heat through his body. He tried to focus on the door, but her floral perfume, the feel of her softness against him, the hand brushing against his nipples made it hard to concentrate on anything but her. He heard whispers from the couple next to them, and he ignored them, running codes in his head to distract himself from Bo Peep. The doors opened, and their elevator mates exited. Before the doors slid shut, Mia pushed against his chest and kissed him. He lost his balance, falling back to the mirrored wall, but quickly righted himself and tightened his arms around her. He slid his tongue past her lips, tangling with hers. She tasted sweet…addictive, and he couldn’t get enough. Curling his palms around her bottom, he lifted her up and leaned her on the bar under the mirrors. The hoops of her skirt rubbed against him as he broke from her mouth and trailed his lips over her cheek, her jaw, to the pounding pulse under her ear. She was soft everywhere. He bit her neck, and Mia moaned. Her fingers dug into the hair at his nape as her legs circled his waist. He slid his palm over her stomach to her breast. Her nipple beaded under his touch and his thumb brushed the tight bud, all the while working the material down. The need to see her laid out before him had his heart racing. Her areoles were dark pink, puckered, and perfect. He dipped down and latched onto the exposed nipple. 18

Mia cried out at the contact, the sound quickening his pulse. “Shane.” He heard the doors open and moved back a step so she could slide down, then quickly swung her up into his arms and carried her out into the hall. Keeping his gaze ahead, he focused on putting one foot in front of the other even though his erection strained painfully in his pants. It took all his control not to run down the hall. Mia nibbled along his jaw. The wet stroke of her tongue sent a shudder through his body. His steps quickened as he reached his suite. She squeezed his bicep. “You do this so well.” “What?” “Carrying me.” He grinned. No one had ever said that to him, but then he’d never carried anyone either. It was a first. He set her down once he got to his room and shoved his key card into the lock, waiting for the light to turn green. Pushing the door open, he drew Mia in and attempted to pull her into his arms once again, but she stopped him when her eyes widened. “Wow.” Shane whipped around and his own shock lodged in his throat. He latched onto the knob, and pulled the door open to check the number. He had the right place, but everything else was wrong. Moving into the sitting room, he spotted the files he’d left on the table to read later that night, and also the computer firmware book he’d bought at the bookstore. Everything seemed right, except the area was transformed. Instead of the normal suite he’d left behind, vases of roses in purple, red, and white sat on the coffee table and work station. His gaze dropped to the trail of petals leading to the bedroom and he followed it, only to become even more surprised. Vibrant petals were strewn across the king-size bed and long stem roses laid on the nightstand. His attention drew to the large bucket on the table by the window. Champagne sat immersed in ice, next to a bowl of plump strawberries and a stark white envelope. He walked to the table and looked over his shoulder to see that Mia had trailed behind him into the room. “Did you do all this?” she asked, incredulity riding her voice. 19

As much as he wanted to take credit for such a thing, there wasn’t a romantic bone in his body. “I wish I could say I did, but it wasn’t me. My idea of being romantic would be giving a woman an external hard drive to make sure she backed up the files on her computer or some anti-virus spyware.” Mia blinked at him and giggled. Her laughter warmed his heart. He ran his thumb over the script of their names. He picked up the linen envelope addressed to both him and Mia and opened it. A blush rose in his cheeks as he read the words on the tissue paper. As Bo Peep and her geeky cowboy find passion, may the night fulfill all fantasies. Madame E. And boy, did he have lots of fantasies. Heat raced through him as he felt her press against his back, peering around his shoulder. “What’s it say?” Shocked at the contact, he handed the sheet to Mia and turned away before she could see the strain of his erection. Even though he wanted nothing more than to throw her on the bed and have his way with her, he didn’t want to scare her off or have her think of him as a hormone-ridden teenager, especially not now when the atmosphere seemed to have softened around them. Ironic that he’d been thinking of romancing her in the elevator and now he had the chance. What were the odds? “Well,” Mia started, “this service thinks of everything.” “I guess so.” Reaching for the bottle of champagne, Shane picked up a crystal flute. His fingers trembled as a wave of nerves attacked him. His stomach clenched. He didn’t understand his reaction. It wasn’t like he was some damn, randy, green boy who had never had sex before, except Mia’s presence definitely rattled him now that they were in his room. He almost groaned at the memory of her in his arms, his finger down the front of her panties, and the feel of her tongue invading his mouth. He saw her from the corner of his eye reach for something behind the champagne bucket, but he focused on pouring the bubbly liquid. Spinning to hand her a glass, he almost dropped the expensive crystal.

In her palm sat a plain white box, and between two fingers she held two strawberry-colored condoms. His cock pulsed. Mia grinned. “I’d say we’re prepared, don’t ya think?”

Chapter Five “Well, here’s to us.” Shane held the glass out to her, and Mia set the prophylactics on the table before she took the flute from him. “To us.” She watched him push his glasses up his nose as she sipped slowly, and he guzzled the champagne then poured himself another, this time to the rim. She didn’t understand his sudden hesitation. Even though Shane hadn’t romantically set up the room, she couldn’t stop the giddiness in her chest from blossoming or the need for this man from intensifying. He was handsome, smart, and hers for the night. Unless he’d changed his mind…. Twirling around, Mia moved to the bed and picked up a violet rose petal from the satin sheets. She brought it to her nose and inhaled the heavenly scent. Her insides tingled, and anticipation surged through her as she glanced at Shane. His gaze followed her every movement. “Tell me. Why did you decide to sign up for this?” Startled by his question, she set the glass on the nightstand. A smile teased the corners of her mouth as she lifted her hoops and sat down on the bed. They settled in place, showing her bare thighs, but she didn’t care. The thing was a pain to maneuver around in. Her fingers rubbed the silky petal between her fingertips, and she imagined her nude body spread out on the mattress, the flowers kissing her bare skin. She’d never made love on rose petals before or satin sheets for that matter. “I actually didn’t want to but my girlfriends dared me. They didn’t think I’d go through with it. Brenda—she’s crazy at times, but I know she wanted me to get out more instead of hiding in the library all the time.” Shane moved closer and placed his own flute on the table. “I’m actually embarrassed to have let my sister get me into this, but I’m kind of glad.” She smiled at him. “Really?” “Well, except that you’re Hunt’s sister.”

His honesty should have set an alarm off in her, but she appreciated that he was telling the truth. She wouldn’t have wanted it otherwise. Mia reached out, took his hand, and tugged him to sit next to her. She lifted his hat off his head and placed it over her own then turned until she faced him, her knee brushing his hip. Studying his fingers, she traced over his knuckles. His masculinity sent a flutter of heat through her body. Images of his hands running over her bare skin made her breathless. “Tonight, I’m just Bo Peep.” He chuckled. “Why Bo Peep? Why not some harlot or something?” She grinned then pressed her palm to her chest in mock exasperation. “Excuse me, sir. I have standards and live by them no matter what I do.” He gave her a mischievous smile. “I’ve been dying to ask you. Where are your sheep?” Mia sighed and tried to keep a straight face. “I lost them at the airport.” “Really?” “No.” She laughed. “Why are you dressed as a cowboy?” A blush rushed to his cheeks. She was tempted to lean over and brush her lips against his jaw. “My sister. She said that she signed me up for the agency and I had to wear this. Kind of convenient since I didn’t have to run out to buy a costume, but then again Lily would have found a way to make sure everything was perfect.” Mia reached out and trailed a finger over the leather of his chaps. Its softness told her how worn they were and she liked that. Her computer geek on horseback. The thought sent a giggle past her lips. “What’s so funny?” Shane took both her hands in his and held them firm. His erection became more apparent, even though he shifted his legs to hide it. “Remember when I said that I didn’t want to do this?” He nodded. “Well, I asked for a cowboy thinking no idiot would dress up as such in Vegas, but boy was I wrong.” “There are plenty of cowboys everywhere.” “I know. When I was filling out the questionnaire, I tried to be a pain and even asked for one who was geeky and smart with silver eyes.” 23

Shane stayed silent. “Well, you got him. So what are you going to do with him?” Her breath hitched. Was that a dare? Excitement raced through her as she stood up and moved in front of him. She reached behind and undid the hooks to her skirt. The ties became loose and with a shimmer the hoops fell, then she grabbed his hat from her head and threw it to the floor. Undoing the barrette holding her curls up, she then shook her hair free and gave him a smile. “I’m sure I’ll think of something.” Shane’s eyes widened. He gulped, his Adam’s apple bobbing. His reaction was all the courage she needed as she leaned over him and took his glasses off. She set them down on the nightstand before turning her attention back to him. His gaze ran over her from head to toe, and her body heated. She bent and kissed him, taking him by surprise. When his hands lifted to her hips, she took hold of them and pressed them down next to him. Her tongue flicked out and traced his bottom lip. A boldness encompassed her as she worked her way down his throat. Her fingers undid the buttons of his white shirt, and she trailed her mouth over each inch of bronze skin exposed. He tasted salty and masculine. His heartbeat escalated under her fingertips, and she reveled in the restraint he held when she noted his hands clenching the sheets next to him. Pushing his legs apart, she dropped to her knees and settled against him. Her breasts rubbed against his erection as she continued her torture. Once she reached his belt buckle, she glanced up to see the heated desire in his eyes and her own pleasure rose at knowing he wanted her as much as she wanted him. She undid the metal clasp and drew the zipper down, the back of her hand deliberately teasing the hardness underneath. His cock sprang free, and her mouth became dry. The ruddiness of his flesh sent a jolt down her spine. The urge to wrap her mouth around him, taste him, feel him—she’d never done that to any man before, and she wanted to. For him. “Mia…” he breathed out. “Now, don’t be scared. I won’t force you to do anything that you don’t want to.” He stilled then a chuckle erupted past his lips, but the laughter died quickly when her mouth closed around him. The scent of his arousal heightened her own, 24

and she licked him from base to tip. Her teeth scraped lightly against the underside of the head, and her tongue teased the slit. Wrapping her hand around him, she pumped the base gently, afraid she might hurt him. She didn’t really know what she was doing, but a groan confirmed his pleasure. Shane squeezed her shoulder. “I want to touch you.” The words pleased her, but she continued to toy with him, his taste as addictive as a drug. With a grunt, Shane hauled her up and flipped her to the bed. She cried out in surprise before he covered her mouth with his. His aggression startled her, but excitement whirled in her stomach. Her legs tried to maneuver around his waist but the loosened leather bit into her skin. She drew back. “Take off your clothes. Now.” A grin spread over his face. “Whatever you want, little lady.” He moved off the bed and took his shirt off, allowing it to flutter to the floor. She studied his every movement, her heart racing a mile a minute with each limb exposed. He was beautiful. His bronze skin shone in the dim hotel lighting and the flex of his muscles intensified the burning in her core. He kicked his boots off then dropped his chaps, jeans, and briefs in one downward swipe and stood proudly with his hands on his hips. Her gaze settled on his erection and her insides tightened, wetness flooding her panties. “Now you.” Mia smiled, hoping she looked seductive enough as she sat up and undid the laces around her ankles. Shane watched her every movement and helped pull her stilettos off once she’d unlaced them. Kneeling on the bed, she reached up and worked the hooks of her corset until the garment became loose. She drew in deep breaths to calm herself as her breasts were freed. Taking the material in hand, she threw it to the floor. “Now the underwear.” She slid off the edge of the bed, hooked her fingers under the lace, and tugged it down. Shane’s sharp intake of air set a flutter to her stomach. She finally looked up to meet his gaze. The intensity there made her swallow hard. Her nipples tightened, 25

and she shifted uncomfortably. She’d never had anyone stare at her so, and she wanted him to touch her. “Anything else?” she asked. “You’re beautiful.” The words came out a bare whisper but she heard them all the same. No one had ever said them to her before. Shane picked up the condoms off the table and closed the distance between them. He threw the box to the bed and then drew her into his arms. “You’re so perfect,” he muttered against her lips. “Now, you’re pushing it, cowboy.” She tried to laugh and ignore the warmth in her chest. Her knees melted and toes curled as he kissed her. Somehow, she felt beautiful and perfect. For once in her life. Lifting her up, he placed her gently in the center of the bed. His tenderness touched her. He shifted to her side and ran his gaze over her as his hand brushed her shoulder, over her breast, and settled on her hips for a brief second before he reached over and picked up a rose off the nightstand. She watched the intensity of his eyes as he brought the flower to her nose. She sniffed and the heavenly scent flooded her senses. He trailed the rose over her lips to her collarbone and stopped at her breast. Then he bent and took the erect nipple in his mouth and her body arched off the bed at the contact. Wondrous sensations tore through as she wrapped her arms around him and dug her fingers into his hair. He toyed with the peak, his tongue drawing erotic circles. She shifted, rubbing against him until he settled between her legs. The ache within intensified, and she pressed her knees into his waist, needing to get closer to him. His erection brushed against her center, sending a jolt of relief, but it was short lived. She wanted so much more. Shane moved to her other breast and she cried out at the contact. She’d never known herself to be so sensitive. Her core tightened, her inner muscles clenched. She needed him in her. Lifting her hips, she tugged at his hair. “Please,” she begged. He chuckled as his finger slid over her stomach to her sex. One swipe over her cleft had her on the verge of release. She became frantic. “It’s okay,” he whispered. “I’ll take care of you.” 26

She clutched him tighter when she felt the penetration. Her insides gripped him like a lifeline and when he added another finger, the tension rose. Her nails dug into his skin, and she jerked his head up to kiss him. Her tongue tangled with his, her need fierce as she rode his hand. “Shane, please.” “Let me taste you first,” he murmured against her lips. He continued his gentle thrusting between her legs, but kissed his way down over her chest, her stomach, and stopped at the hair covering her mound. She heard him draw in a deep breath as he parted her wet folds. Then his mouth closed over the taut bud. She would have lifted off the bed if it weren’t for his arms holding her down. He teased her clit, the fire spreading throughout her and settling in her core. Her body tightened and she thought she saw stars as she was thrown over the edge. She cried out as shudders wracked her whole being. Shane continued his assault until she finally lay limp. She’d never had such an explosive orgasm. She couldn’t move if her life depended on it. “You okay?” She glanced down and smiled. Her eyes went straight to his cock. Maybe she could move after all. Grabbing a condom from the box, she tore it open and pushed him to the side until he leaned against the headboard. His cock jumped as she sheathed him and climbed over his lap. “My turn, cowboy.” He laughed and gripped her bottom before he kissed her. “Go slow. I want to feel every inch.” “No problem with that. I plan to give you the ride of your life,” she retorted, but gasped the moment the head of his shaft surged past her folds. His size overwhelmed her. The discomfort passed quickly as she lowered herself another inch. Shane groaned. “Oh, God, you feel so good.” She drew his hands to her breasts. Even though they were sore, they still ached, needing his attention. “Suck me.” “Glad to oblige,” he murmured and gave her a squeeze before his mouth latched onto a bud. She took another inch of him, reveling in the sensation of her muscles stretching. She wanted to remember this forever. 27

Shane growled and closed his hands over her hips. His body shook as his fingers dug into her as if trying to hold onto his control. Then without warning, he shifted until he was kneeling and surged upward. Mia cried out. Shane moved frantically, setting the rhythm. She met each of his thrusts with the same determination. Tension latched onto every nerve as she rocked against him. He pounded harder, his grip sliding over her skin as sweat covered their bodies. With a frustrated grunt, he spun her to the headboard and pressed her into it. Their pace quickened, and all she could do was hold on as he slammed into her. She licked his collarbone; the saltiness of his skin heightened her need for release. An emptiness she never knew existed in her chest evaporated as release grappled at her. Her body tightened and she bit his shoulder, stifling the urge to cry out as once again shudders racked her whole being. Shane groaned louder as he hammered into her. Her back rubbed against the pillows, against the wooden panel as he thrust faster. She wanted him to find his pleasure, his release. Her inner muscles clenched around him, milking him. She wanted to feel every shiver as he came. Shane stilled for the barest second before he started to shake. She held him until the last tremor left his body and he collapsed against her. They lay still, trying to catch their breath. Mia brushed her nose against his shoulder, pressing a kiss to his sweaty skin. “Never….” Shane let out in between pants. “Never what?” she asked. He wrapped his arms around her and fell back against the mattress with her on top of him. She landed with an oomph but settled contently. She didn’t want to be parted from him just yet. Shane rubbed her back as his chest heaved to draw in air. “I’ve…I’ve never lost control like that before.” Warmth enveloped her. She lifted on her elbows and stared down at him. A vulnerable gleam flashed in his eyes, and her insides softened. Realization pierced through her. She’d taken Brenda’s challenge with reluctance, and subconsciously when she’d been filling out the forms for the agency, she must’ve

had Shane on her mind. She’d asked for a smart and geeky cowboy with silver eyes. And she’d received more than she’d ever dared to hope for. Brushing his hair off his forehead, she pressed a kiss to his lips. “I’m glad it was with me…because truthfully, I wouldn’t have wanted this night with anyone else.”

Chapter Six “Tell me again why you decided to become a librarian.” Shane nibbled on Mia’s shoulders, his hands each cupping a breast under the heated water. They sat in the Jacuzzi after another romp on the bed, and he couldn’t seem to get enough of her. Mia sighed in contentment. She wiggled her bottom against his groin, and he stifled a groan. “I like helping people. I enjoy watching the little kids flip open the books and laugh out loud at what they read. I don’t know. I’ve just always loved books.” “Didn’t you ever want to go work for one of the bigger universities?” After each round of lovemaking, they would cuddle up against each other and just talk. He’d never done that with anyone but he wanted to know everything about Mia— absorb all her likes and dislikes. He wondered why he had never noticed her much in town. Well, besides the fact that she was off-limits being Hunt’s baby sister, but the more he found out, the more he dreaded the end of their night. “I thought about it, but working in academia didn’t appeal to me. I love our small town, the folks and the friendliness of the people. Why didn’t you move to a bigger city?” Mia rubbed his knees under the water. The jets tickled his backside, and he couldn’t remember a time he’d ever been so relaxed. “My parents. I don’t like going too far. Dad thinks I’m a disappointment since I refuse to take over the family business. I’ve just never been into the whole ranching thing even though I grew up on the ranch. I help out at times to please them but….” “Your company’s successful. They should be proud.” “It doesn’t matter to them that I bring in millions a year. My parents are more concerned that the McCormick line will die with me. They want grandkids.” Mia chuckled. “Well, I know you’re capable of performing in bed, at least.”

“Definitely.” He flashed a wicked grin and gave her breasts a squeeze before he pinched her nipples. He let out a heavy sigh as he thought about his work. “I love my security company. I’ve always been fascinated with technology and the whole digital wave is only going to open new doors for the industry. I just wish my parents would understand....” She pressed a kiss to his cheek and squirmed against him. “I’m sure they will sooner or later.” “I doubt it.” But he smiled at the encouragement in her voice. His balls ached, and he wanted nothing more than to whip her around and take her in the water, but they’d barely slept most of the night since neither seemed able to keep their hands off the other. “I’m glad you enjoy your work, though. Evan is miserable half the time because he can’t focus on his own business as much as he wants.” He stiffened at the mention of her brother. “You know your brother hates me.” Mia turned to face him. “He doesn’t hate you.” His eyebrow lifted. “We’ve been rivals since we were in diapers. We’ve competed against each other all our lives. He always feels the need to win.” She frowned and settled herself back against his chest. “Don’t you?” It was his turn to frown. He wasn’t ruthless in business, but when it came to Evan Hunt, he always found the motivation and drive to work harder. “I suppose.” “Maybe it’s just a guy thing. Maybe you guys actually keep each other going. Have you ever thought that if you didn’t have Evan to compete against, you wouldn’t have accomplished so much so soon?” “I guess there’s some truth there. So tell me, why are you afraid of your brother?” Mia sighed. “He’s my brother. When my dad died, Evan had to support us. He took care of Mother and I, and he’s always been protective of me. I think at times too much.” Shane thought of his younger sister. He could remember each time he had wanted to beat up the guys she chose to date and she’d finally ended up marrying

scum who’d walked out not long after their wedding. “I know the feeling,” he replied. “He cares for you, and it’s his responsibility to protect you.” She huffed. “No, he’s just wretched. It’s bad enough that I don’t do anything. I don’t go out, I don’t date. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten drunk in my life.” One phrase caught his attention. “Why don’t you date?” Mia slid to the other side of the tub and settled against the jets. “I don’t know.” He stifled the urge to pull her back into his embrace. Refusing to let the distance bother him, he forced himself to relax against the wall of the tub. He couldn’t see her quite clearly without his glasses, but he realized she was avoiding his gaze. “I’m sure there are guys chasing after you.” Mia’s head jerked up, and she bit her bottom lip and let out a giggle. “Oh, Shane. You certainly do know how to talk to the ladies.” “I’m serious.” She shook her head. “I’m not usually bold or this daring with men—with anyone. Tonight was….” His heart tightened. He moved across the Jacuzzi and curled his fingers around her knees, drawing them apart before he leaned in and kissed her. “I’m glad.” Her sweetness wrapped around him as he gathered her against him. His cock throbbed at the contact. Their attraction amazed him. No matter how many times he’d thought about their compatibility and how well they fit together, he couldn’t figure out the logic in his response to her. He didn’t know how much time they had left but he didn’t want her to leave him. Ever. Breaking the kiss, he pressed his forehead against hers. “I know we don’t know each other that well, and you’re Hunt’s sister and all, but I’d love to have breakfast with you.” He paused. “It could be a real date.” Mia gasped and drew back. A smile spread across her face. “I’d like that a lot, but…” her hand closed over his erection and he groaned, “how about after I have my way with you?” ***

Mia smiled as she ran her fingers through her wet hair. Shane had left her in the bathroom when a knock at the door had ended their love play. He’d given her a kiss before he left to let room service in with their breakfast he’d ordered earlier. She studied her reflection in the mirror and couldn’t keep the silly grin off her face. A glow radiated from her, and she noted the sparkle in her eyes. Her whole body felt alive like never before. All because of Shane. Her happiness dimmed as she spotted the sun pushing over the horizon in the little window above the shower. She wished their time together would never end. Taking the terry cloth robe off the door, she slipped her arms through the sleeves and tied the sash tightly across her waist. The material swallowed her whole, and she had to roll up the arms. Just as she whipped the door open, she heard voices coming from the front room. She rushed through the bedroom to the sitting room and stopped short. Fear and dread froze her in place. “McCormick, you bastard, I’m going to kill you!” Her brother jerked forward, his expression ferocious and threatening. Sarah moved in front of him. “Evan, stop!” “I know she’s here.” Evan tried to gently maneuver Sarah aside, but her friend stubbornly held onto him. Mia frowned. What were Evan and Sarah doing together? Her gaze bounced to Shane, who stood with a towel wrapped around his waist and a fierce glare on his face, hands clenched at his sides, and was definitely not backing down from her brother. “Back off, Hunt! It’s none of your business.” “That’s my baby sister, you asshole.” Evan surged forward. Sarah cried out and latched onto his elbow. Shane nudged his glasses up his nose, eyes narrowing. “Mia can make her own choices.” “If I find out you’ve touched her, I swear I’ll—” “I would never hurt her, Hunt. I care for her even if I don’t like you all that much.”

Mia’s heart warmed, but when she glanced at her brother, the air rushed out of her lungs. Anger encompassed his features, murder filling his eyes. She needed to step in before all hell broke loose. “Evan,” Mia called out. They all whipped around to face her, and she stumbled back a step. “What are you doing here?” Evan’s hands balled at his sides. “What am I doing here? What the hell are you doing here? You were supposed to be in Nassau. You lied!” She gulped. Ever since she’d been a little girl, she’d feared her brother’s temper though she knew he’d never beat her or hurt her. “I didn’t lie, exactly…how did you find me, anyway?” Her brother just glared. Mia bit back the panic rising in her chest. “Some couple we ran into this morning told us they saw Bo Peep and a cowboy going at it in the elevator,” Sarah announced. Mia groaned. Her friend gave her an apologetic smile. She’d forgotten the drunk couple that had shared the elevator car with them. Annoyance gripped her, but she turned her attention back to her brother. For once, she didn’t want to cower. She was a grown woman for God’s sake and it wasn’t as if she had anything to lose. It was time she got out from under his controlling thumb. “It doesn’t matter why I’m here. It’s my life. I can live it as I please.” Evan’s mouth dropped open. His shocked expression would have been hilarious if it hadn’t turned dark and threatening. “You are going to grab your stuff and we’re going home. Now.” “No.” Shane stepped in front of her. “She’s not leaving.” Her brother jerked forward. “The hell she isn’t. She’s my sister!” Shane reached for her hand, and she laced her fingers with his. He drew her against him. A sense of protection and security wrapped around her. “She’ll leave when she is ready.” “Mia Elizabeth Hunt, you—” “He’s right. I’ll leave when I’m ready, Evan. I’m not a little girl…dammit.” The curse sounded awkward rolling off her tongue, but she said it again. Strength whipped through her at the force behind the word. She liked it. Evan gave her an incredible look. “What is wrong with you?” 34

“I have decided that I need to live my own life. And you need to understand that I’m not a little girl. I respect you as my older brother, but you have to realize that I’m a grown woman and I can make my own choices.” Evan stumbled back a step. “Mia….” “She’s right, Evan,” Sarah added as she moved to his side and laid a hand around his elbow. “But…you’re my baby sister,” her brother murmured. “I’ll always be your baby sister.” “He’s McCormick. You know how much I—” “You don’t hate him, Evan. Neither does he hate you.” Mia squeezed Shane’s hand when he tensed next to her. But her eyes narrowed when Sarah lovingly patted her brother’s chest. “What’s going on between you two? I thought you were meeting your date last night?” A blush rose in Sarah’s cheek as she tried to hide her smile. “Well….” “You know what? I’ll see you when you get home, and we’ll talk.” Evan whipped around quickly, dragging Sarah with him then stopped at the door. “I swear, McCormick, if you hurt her or if I find out that she’s even shed one tear—” “I won’t. She’ll be fine,” Shane answered before Evan could finish. Her brother gave her one last glance before he strode off with Sarah in tow. Mia stared at the empty doorway in amazement. She’d never expected Evan to back down so easily. She tapped her chin with her finger, deep in thought. Sarah was supposed to meet a Prince Charming but no way her brother could be her date. Could he? “So….” Shane moved across the room and kicked the door shut before he faced her. “So…?” “When do you plan to leave?” He crossed his arms over his chest and waited. Her gaze trailed over his tall form, from his dark hair still wet at the ends from their shower, his broad shoulders to the narrow strip of hair on his stomach before it disappeared into the towel wrapped around his waist. Her eyes flicked to the bed before she smiled. “I thought you said we were going to have breakfast together?” 35

Shane grinned then closed the distance between them. “I’d love to feed you, but I…also want to see you when we get back to Rover.” Her heart skipped. She could imagine herself meeting him for lunch, going home with him after work, chatting over everything they liked and disliked—just spending time with him. Her friends would be glad she wasn’t hiding in her apartment or behind books. “Like on a real date, even knowing that my brother will probably be watching every move you make?” He nodded. “A lot of real dates, if you’ll have me.” She took a few steps forward until she stood directly in front of him and laid her hand on his chest. “I think I’d like that. A lot.” Shane let out a ragged breath and drew her into his arms. “But we can still use up the time we have now though, right?” His hardness pressed into her stomach and heat stole over her skin. The man was insatiable. For her. Lifting up on her toes, she brushed her lips over his. The giddiness from last night returned. “I believe so. I don’t think we’ve done anything with the strawberries, and we should finish up the champagne.” Shane swung her up into his arms. “Sounds like a plan. Hopefully, we won’t find any rose petals between my butt cheeks this time.” Mia laughed. “No worries, cowboy. But maybe we should put your chaps back on without your jeans….”
