Chapter 1 “You realize, of course, that you were speeding,” the police officer said, his arms folded over his chest, his mouth a firm line. He was young, too young to be so serious. Libby leaned out her open window and smiled up at him. “I know. I’m not from here and I didn’t see the sign until it was too late.” “Oh, in Arkansas the speed limit for driving through a town is eighty-five?” he asked, his tone dripping with sarcasm. He lowered his arms and set his hands on the door. “I’m going to have to see your license and registration, please.” Libby bit her lip and caught sight of his nametag. “Please, Officer Davidson, I don’t have insurance.” “Of course you don’t.” He sighed and pulled a pen and notepad from his shirt pocket. “What about a license?” “I do have that.” She leaned back into the car and began rummaging around in her purse. Her heart skipped a beat and a sickening sense of dread made her mouth go dry. “My wallet, it’s gone.” He squatted down before the window and for the first time she got a good look at him. Clean-shaven angular face, straight nose, soft lips, and dark hair. Very nice. If only she could see his eyes, but the dark sunglasses kept them hidden. “No license, no insurance, speeding. Your ass on fire?” 1

“What?” “You seem to be in an awful big hurry. May I see your registration, please?” She shook her head. “If I run a check on your plates, what will I find?” A lump formed in her throat and tears stung her eyes. “Don’t do that.” With ease of motion, he put the pen and paper back into his pocket and grimaced. “I’m going to have to ask you to step out of the car.” He straightened and pulled open the door. Libby sat there, her body quivering, petrified. Not missing a beat, he took her by her arm, his fingers strong as they dug into her flesh. “I haven’t done anything wrong,” she protested. “Put your hands on the hood.” Her body quaked as he patted her down. When his hand skimmed over her thighs and across her buttocks, a strange surge coursed through her and her stomach tightened into a knot. “What are you doing?” “I’m taking you into the station,” he answered in monotone. She turned to face him and saw him removing handcuffs from his belt. “You don’t have to do that. I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t want…” Davidson grabbed her wrist and spun her around, bending her over the hood. His body rested against the backs of her thighs and again she felt it, the unexpected jolt of excitement. Not the time! She felt herself becoming more and more turned on by his take-charge manner. 2

“What don’t you want?” he asked, cuffing her and pulling her to standing. “I-I don’t want my boyfriend to find me.” Davidson lowered her into the squad car and removed his glasses. Blue—his eyes were silver blue, but difficult to read. “You steal his car?” he asked, pointing at the primer gray GTO. “No.” “He can’t report it stolen?” “No,” she said again, her tears running in salty rivulets down her cheeks. “But if he knows where the car is, he’ll know where to find me.” Davidson blew out a disgusted breath. “Before I take you in, tell me everything and I’ll see what can be done.” She closed her eyes tight at the memory of Dwayne’s latest attack. How could she put what almost happened into words without bawling like a baby? “He thinks he owns me. I told him I wanted out. I didn’t want or need him anymore.” “Go on,” he coaxed, his voice softer and sweeter than she would have believed possible. “I’ve heard it all before.” “He started sending me flowers at work, calling and hanging up…” Tears stung anew and fell in large drops. Her lower lip quivered and she looked to Davidson for reassurance. He offered a gentle smile. “Last week he broke into my house and tried to…” The memory of him ripping at her clothes, and prying her legs apart tore into her soul. A sob escaped her lips before she could stifle it. Davidson rested his hand on her shoulder, the warmth and tenderness of the gesture urging her on. 3

“The police came and arrested him, but his brother is the chief. I knew he’d get out and be back.” She shifted her weight. With her hands still cuffed, her wrists ached and she couldn’t wipe away her tears. “I threw some shit into a bag and got the hell out of there.” “What about your family?” She shook her head. “My folks left me with my granny when I was a baby. Granny’s been gone for near six years now. Nothing’s been right since.” Davidson knelt down by the open car door and removed a red bandanna handkerchief from his back pocket. Wiping away her tears, he asked, “Where are you heading?” Raising her head, she looked up at him. “It looks like I’m going to jail.” “No, sweetheart.” Davidson winked. “I’m gonna believe you.” He helped her out of the car and removed the cuffs. “I may be a fool for doing it but I can’t see risking your life for a little money in the city’s coffers.” “Thanks.” She smiled and without thought reached up and touched his arm. Beneath the light fabric of his pale blue uniform shirt, she felt a well-toned bicep. When her gaze came to his, she caught a flash of interest and her breath caught in her throat. “What you going to do now?” he asked. “You got no money, no I.D., nothing.” “I guess I’ll go back to the place I filled up and hope that they have my wallet. I don’t want to. It’s well over a hundred miles ago.” “You remember the name of the place? You could call. Chances are no one is gonna turn it in. You’re probably pretty well screwed on ever seeing that again.” 4

She felt around her pants pocket. “I have a receipt.” She offered it to him and he examined it. “What’s your name?” “Libby Collins.” ‘Well, Ms. Collins, I’ll call it in and have some folks look into it for you.” “They’ll do that for me?” He grinned. “Here in White Springs it will be something interesting to do. The occasional speeder is about the most excitement we get in a day.” He disappeared into the cruiser and talked into the radio. Returning to where she leaned against the GTO, he ran an appreciative finger over the hood. “Annie’s taking care of it.” “Thank you.” “What are you going to do in the meantime?” She scrubbed her hands over her tired face. “I guess I’ll find a nice parking spot and wait.” He cocked his head and grinned. “I’m off duty ’til tomorrow. What do you think about coming home with me for supper?” His voice was softer, his manner changed, and as tempted as she was by the offer, she shook her head. “I couldn’t do that.” “Why not? It’s food and a place to wash up before you leave White Springs.” He leaned forward and put his mouth close to her ear. “I ain’t a bad sort.” His warm breath caused a delightful chill and her nipples tightened. He pulled back and smiled. “What do you say?” “I am hungry.” “I imagine you’ve not had anything better to eat than a day-old truck stop hotdog since you left Arkansas.” 5

She grinned and he rubbed her arm. “That’s better. You know you ain’t too hard on the eyes, especially when you smile.”

Chapter 2 Libby followed Davidson down a winding dirt road and up a short gravel driveway. His house was a smallish white cottage adorned with black shutters. The front porch ran the length of the structure, screened in and decorated with two rocking chairs. In the drive sat an emerald green GTO, shining in the soft light of the spring evening. The air was moist and the scent of fresh pine from the nearby thicket brought back memories of childhood, safe in the bosom of her grandmother’s love. “My castle.” Davidson smiled as he exited the squad car and slammed the door. “Nice ride,” Libby remarked getting out of her car. “’64?” “Yes. My baby.” Libby looked at her heap. “Mine’s a ’65. Dwayne thought my clunker had potential.” “Oh.” Davidson grinned. “She does.” He approached her and set a hand on her lower back. “Come on in. I’ll fix you something cool to drink and you can wash up before dinner.” Libby stood her ground, uncertainty tugging at her throat. “Why are you being nice to me?” He shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. I guess it’s like my momma said, help where you’re able.” 7
Speed Trap
“That’s nice,” she replied, scanning his face. His eyes were soft upon her, no hint of duty left in them. “Thank you, Officer Davidson.” “You’re welcome, sweetheart.” He brushed a strand of hair from her cheek. “My name’s Keith. Now Libby Collins, you prefer your chicken baked or grilled?” **** Libby looked at herself in Keith’s bathroom mirror. Make-up streaked, exhausted circles under her green eyes, sandy brown hair oily from traveling with the car windows down. Her stomach ached with hunger and her lips cracked from dehydration. “You’ve been on the road less than a day and look at you. You’ll never make North Carolina at this rate.” She splashed her face with cool water before rummaging through her bag to find a toothbrush. She could put her hair in a ponytail, wash her face, and feel better, but she thought she’d die if she didn’t brush her teeth. At the tap on the bathroom door, she jumped. “Yes?” “There are fresh towels under the sink and help yourself to the shampoo.” “Thanks.” “Relax and take it easy, okay? Mi casa sort of thing.” She rubbed her tired eyes. Why is he being kind? What does he want from me? Too fatigued to ponder, she took him up on his offer and showered. The massaging jets of warm water beat away the ache from Dwayne’s assault and the hours of driving. Tension escaped and as she toweled off, she hummed. Dressed in a fresh t-shirt and denim shorts, she left the bathroom and walked down the hallway, combing her hair. She looked at the 8

pictures of smiling faces along the wall. From all appearances, Officer Keith Davidson had a large and happy family. “Officer?” she called when she reached the kitchen and found it empty. “I’m out here in the back.” His voice filtered through the storm door to the left of the kitchen table. She followed the sound and on opening the door was greeted by a three-legged poodle and a one-eyed schnauzer. “Elvis and Priscilla.” He grinned and jiggled the grill to move the bits of hot charcoal around, and orange sparks rose around him. “Cute,” Libby remarked, stepping onto the deck before leaning over to pet them. “Hi, you two.” “They’re a couple of jokers.” Libby giggled as she stroked the dingy white poodle. “Priscilla needs a bath.” “Believe it or not, that’s Elvis.” He chuckled. “What happened to him?” she asked, amazed at how well he maneuvered around the deck minus a leg. “I don’t know. I suspect his owner kicked the shit out of him. Came limping up here one day and I took care of him.” “And Priscilla?” “She was my sister’s dog. Sandy got tired of her, left her in the pen all night.” Keith bent over and scratched the black and gray dog behind the ear. “Prissy here didn’t think much of the idea and decided to dig her way out. Caught some wire right in the eye.” He cringed and closed his eyes. “Bad scene.” Libby looked up at him. Dressed in a white tank, jeans, and flip-flops, she noted that even out of uniform, he cut a fine figure. Her heart fluttered and when the idea of him kissing her entered her mind, she didn’t stop it. She wondered 9

how he would taste and if he were gentle and giving or forceful and demanding. “Just helping where you’re able?” she asked, her voice cracking. “I guess you could say that.” She straightened and moved toward him, the heat from the grill nothing in comparison to the heat in her body. “You take in stray woman often?” He grinned, no humor in those silver eyes. With a raised brow, he asked, “You a stray or you something special?” Rising on her toes, she placed a gentle kiss on those full soft lips. He didn’t return her kiss but watched her as she moved inside. “Why don’t you tell me?” “Woman.” He shook his head. “Don’t tempt me.” “You’d be helping me out,” she replied, her mind reeling. Why am I coming on so strong? Am I testing him? Her heart thumped and her legs grew weak. No, I do want him. She’d never felt this way before. The sad fact was Dwayne Parsons was her one and only lover. She’d had men interested, and even dated, but that had been as far as it went. The realization burned through and she watched him, waiting. He turned his face back toward the grill. “Dinner will be ready soon. In the meantime, will you get me a beer from the fridge?” Humiliated, she brought him a bottle. He took a long swig before looking at her, Officer Davidson having returned. “Sweetheart, what was that all about?” “I don’t know, was I reading you wrong?” He ran his fingers through his chestnut hair, not answering. 10
Speed Trap
“You don’t find me attractive?” “I didn’t say that. I’ll fuck you and it’ll be good. Is that what you want?” “What if I say yes?” He slammed the lid of the grill and walked to where she stood, backing her up against the house. “I say, let’s don’t waste anymore time.” He pressed his mouth to hers, his lips firm, and his hands strong as he pulled her to him. She wrapped her arms around his waist, her fingers exploring the muscular contours of his back. His mouth moved down her neck, his moist lips and warm breath leaving behind raw, aroused flesh. He cupped her breast with his hand and massaged the nipple into a rigid peak of wanton desire. With ease, he lifted her into his arms and carried her to his bedroom. The bed unmade, he deposited her on the soft cotton sheets. She pulled her t-shirt over her head, exposing her bosom to his gaze. He exhaled a ragged breath and removed his shirt, his body a masterpiece of God and man. Her pussy flooded with anticipation. His eyes narrowed as he took in her form. Gripping the back of her head, his fingers entwined in her damp hair and he stared into her eyes. “I want you, Libby, there’s no doubt about that.” He kissed her again, his lips crushing, his tongue darting in and out of her mouth, taunting her. With shaking hands, she pulled his head away and pushed his face to her breasts. “Suck me,” she whispered with desperation. He groaned and drew a rosy nipple into his mouth. She arched against him, wanting to experience all he had to offer. Kissing her, he slid his hand beneath the waistband of her shorts and panties and slid a finger inside her. 11

“You do want me, don’t you?” he said, pushing his middle finger deep inside her pussy. She gasped with the pleasure he provided, forcing her hips upward to enable him free access to her. “Tell me you want me, Libby,” he whispered into her ear. Her breathing grew rapid as he moved his finger from side to side. “Tell me that you want me to fuck you.” “I-I want you to fuck me.” The words rang foreign in her ears, as if she were no longer in the room. Her entire world now revolved around Keith’s fingers pressing into her cunt. “Show me,” he urged, pulling his hand free. “Prove it.” In a frenzy of need, Libby pushed him away, and removed the remnants of her clothing. Forcing him to his back, she straddled him. “I’ll show you,” she said, then claimed his mouth with hers. She forced her tongue between his teeth, savoring his flavor and the scent of him, musky and warm. Nipping and licking, sucking and biting, her mouth traveled down his beautiful, muscled chest, to his abdomen where his swollen cock pressed against his jeans. With greedy fingers, she undressed him, her hands still shaking as she seized his beautiful prick. He was hard and ready for her, so she looked to his face. “I think you want to fuck me too.” “Your turn to suck me,” he murmured. Libby moved her hand up and down the length of Keith’s shaft, watching as his face contorted with each stroke. Lowering her head, she drew the aroused flesh into her mouth. Her lips tight, she sucked and stroked, her head moving in rhythm with her hand. Keith’s body tensed at her assault, he drew in a sharp breath and grabbed the sheets. Moans escaped his lips but before he had the chance to come, he sat up and grabbed at her. 12
Speed Trap
“I ain’t done with you, Libby.” He drew her into a gentle embrace and laid her flat on the bed beneath him. “You got to know something,” he said, his tone thick with longing. “This ain’t all about me.” He placed a soft kiss on her lips and looked into her eyes. “You lie on your stomach now. I’ll be right back.” She watched Keith exit the room, glorious and shameless in his nudity. Her heart raced and her head felt light when he returned a moment later with a towel and bottle of massage oil. “I saw your bruises,” he stated. Her lip quivered at the memory of her hurt at Dwayne’s hands. “Now roll over, sweetheart. Before we go any farther, I’m going to erase him from your body.” More like an obedient child than a woman, Libby did as he commanded. Her head on a pillow, she closed her eyes as Keith massaged the warm, cherry-scented oil into her aching flesh. Each swirl of his fingertips, each gentle knead, each warm stroke bringing on a relaxation she hadn’t known existed. Life had never been easy and a good night’s rest was a distant memory. Keith touched her everywhere, her shoulders, neck, back, waist. When he reached her buttocks, relaxation fled and her desire for him returned. Rolling over, their eyes met as she said, “Keith, I don’t know…” He smiled. “I do and as much as I want to be inside you, there ain’t no hurry.” “But there is,” she whispered. “I have never been with a man like you, a good man. Make love to me, Keith. Show me how it should be.” 13
Speed Trap
Keith’s eyes grew soft. Licking his lips, he kissed her again. He ran his slippery hands over her body and cupped her buttocks. Pulling her upward, he slid a pillow beneath her hips. “Are you sure?” She nodded and moved her legs apart to allow him to enter her. With care, he pushed himself into her pussy. “Oh, Libby,” he moaned. “You are so tight.” Unable to control his lust any longer he began the rhythmic dance. Pumping her full of his large prick, he pleased her with every inch as it slid in and out of her. She bucked beneath him, eager to accept his desire and release her own. Her moans of pleasure loud in her ears, she let go of everything the past had done to her, determined to lose herself in this man. He continued his adept fucking and she felt as though she were the only woman in the world, feeling things she had never felt before, experiencing what lovemaking was supposed to be. She clawed at him, pulled him close to her, her legs wrapped around his waist. She couldn’t get enough of him, his taste, his smell, his touch. “Fuck me good,” she murmured, her voice no longer her own. He possessed her. She opened her eyes to find him staring down at her, his lower lip tight between his teeth. His body quivered and as she came for the fourth time, he released his seed and shuddered. He panted and pulled himself out of her. Resting beside her, he smiled. “I am so damned glad I didn’t arrest you today.” Libby giggled and pulled the sheet over her nudity. “Me too,” she returned, breathless. “I’d take another beating to be loved like that.” Keith’s face grew grim. “Libby, no man has the right to hurt you.” He smoothed the hair from her face. 14
Speed Trap
She let out a humorless chuckle. “That needs to be written down somewhere, ’cause I’ve not met a man yet who knows that.” Keith brushed a kiss across her cheek. “Well, you’ve met one now.” Libby snuggled beneath the quilt on Keith’s bed, the soft sheets and downy pillow lulling her into sleep. Keith kissed her and rose. “I’m going to get supper fixed. You sleep and it’ll be there when you wake up.” “Do you have to go?” She reached for him. He smiled. “Don’t worry, I’ll be around. Got to feed the dogs and don’t want the chicken to burn. Rest, sweetheart.” He pulled on his jeans and shirt. She watched him, admiring his smooth movements, his form remarkable, as if he worked at his physique every spare moment. But it was his face that took her breath away. Hair tousled, features relaxed from the exertion of their lovemaking, he had gone from handsome to beautiful. How could someone so wonderful ever want someone like me?

Chapter 3 Libby’s eyes fluttered open, the pale light of morning fell through the cracks in the blinds. Turning on her side, she found Keith sleeping next to her, his torso bare, fine stubble on his chin. Her gaze caressed his face and she felt as though she may cry. She knew she’d have to go soon but she was in no hurry to say goodbye. As if sensing her stare, Keith’s eyes came open. “Good morning, Ms. Collins.” “Hi.” He sat up and stretched. “I know you must be starving. When’s the last time you ate?” “At the truck stop where I lost my wallet. Did you hear from anyone last night?” “Nope. I’ll call after I get a cup of coffee in me. You want one?” She nodded and felt around the bed for her shirt. He tossed her a UT Volunteer t-shirt from his top drawer and she pulled it over her head. “My bottom half is still naked,” she informed him, tossing back the sheet to retrieve her discarded shorts and panties. “I know. I can see that. Mmm mmm, good stuff.” She giggled and finished dressing before heading to the bathroom and her toothbrush. Looking at herself in the mirror 16

as she brushed she was pleased at how rested she appeared. When was the last time she had slept this well? Been so fulfilled? She shook her head. It wouldn’t do to get too attached to him. It was a fling, a one-time thing. This afternoon she’d be on the road and Officer Keith Davidson would be nothing more than a nice man who came to the rescue when she needed a hero. As she rinsed, she heard the phone ring. Keith answered it on the second ring. “Helllooo,” he said his tone chipper. “Yes, sir.” His voice changed from sweet Keith to Officer Davidson. “I understand. I’ll bring her in. Yes. Yes.” Keith stood by the bathroom door when she exited, his eyes filled with concern. “Dwayne Parsons has a missing persons report out for you.” “Oh God. I should have known he’d drag his brother into this.” “Apparently, a good Samaritan did turn your wallet into the Memphis police, three hundred dollars in cash, two credit cards, and your driver’s license.” Tears stung her eyes. “Lucky me.” “How much money did you have with you?” “About that. Enough to get me to Carolina.” Keith wrapped his arms around her and she buried her face in his chest. “Dwayne and his brother are up from Arkansas to take you home. They have a warrant for your arrest. Dwayne says you stole fifteen hundred dollars from him and that the GTO is his.” “It was Granny’s car,” she wailed. “I never took anything from him.” She clung to his shirt and sobbed. “I can’t go back. Please, Keith, I can’t.” 17
Speed Trap
He ran his hands up and down the length of her back. “I’ll be right there with you, sweetheart. Don’t you fret. Those bruises on your body will be enough to gain sympathy from any self-respecting judge.” “I’m not lucky, Keith. Dwayne will win, he always does.” With gentle hands, Keith pushed her back and dried her tears. “Who’d you have in your corner then?” “No one.” “Remember,” he said with concern. “I help out where I’m able.” **** Keith escorted Libby into the police station. Libby’s hands shook and her fingers grew clammy. The small building smelled musty and old. The sounds of computers and a failing air conditioner seemed loud in her nervous state and the fluorescent lights almost blinding. She stood back in the corner as Keith walked up to the brown paneled counter and spoke to the attractive redhead manning it. “Hey, Annie, where’s Leon?” “He’s in the back with those, uh, gentlemen from Arkansas,” she said quietly, but Libby could still hear. “Please take care of Ms. Collins while I go back and find out exactly what’s going on.” “Should I start processing her?” Annie asked, rummaging through a rickety file cabinet. Hearing those words, Libby stared at the exit, wondering how far she could get without Keith catching her. “No.” He shook his head. “That’s premature. You use the Polaroid and get some photos of her abuse. She’s pretty well beat up.” 18
Speed Trap
Annie’s eyes shifted to Libby’s and in their depths, she recognized the unwanted pity. Annie unlatched the gate separating the ‘office’ from the waiting area. “Come with me, honey. We’ll get you taken care of.” Keith took Libby’s hand and led her to Annie. “When you’re done, run a check on the registration of this car.” He pulled a piece of paper from his pocket. “This has the license plate and VIN number. Should clear things up.” He winked at Libby. “No worries, sweetheart.” Annie put a gentle arm around Libby’s waist and led her through a pair of doors and into a small room. “Did you report your abuse while you were in Arkansas?” she asked, opening a closet and pulling out a digital camera and an instamatic. Libby shook her head. “Scared?” “That and my boyfriend’s brother is the chief.” Annie offered a sympathetic nod. “I’m going to take instant photos of your bruises for Keith to show to Leon and use the digital for our permanent records.” Annie closed the door and Libby undressed, her dark bruises more apparent in the bright white light. Her upper arms, wrists, knees, thighs and buttocks photographed. Humiliated, she was relieved when Annie told her to get dressed. “I know how hard that was for you, honey.” Annie handed her a box of tissues. “I’m going to go get some papers for you to fill out.” Tears rolled down Libby’s cheeks and a sob caught in her throat. Annie gave her hand a squeeze. “Everything will be all right.” **** 19

Libby stayed in the little room, pacing the small area much like a caged animal. Her heart pounded, stomach roiled and limbs shook. What is he saying about me? Why is he doing this to me? Why is this happening? Why, why, why? Tears spilled over and she bit at the dry skin on her lower lip. Annie soon returned with the paperwork. “I don’t suppose this report will be worth the paper it’s written on since the incident occurred in Arkansas, but it can’t hurt either.” Glad for the distraction, Libby answered Annie’s questions. “What were the circumstances?” Annie asked. “You mean why did he hit me?” “Sort of. You can’t know why he hit you but you need to tell me what was going on when he did.” Libby took in a deep breath to steel herself. “A couple days before he hit me, I packed his bag and told him I was through with him.” Libby leaned against the wall, her eyes closed. “I walked in on him and my friend, Bev, going at it…” She looked at Annie. “You know what I mean?” Annie nodded. “He left but the next day at work he started calling and sending flowers. Two days later, he came back. He told me we’d never be over and he…” She broke down and all her anguish flooded from her core. Putting her hands to her face, she cried and for the first time since Granny’s passing she allowed her grief to let go. Annie wrapped an arm around her and rubbed her back. “What did he do, honey?” “He tried to force me to…” “But he didn’t?” “No, I grabbed my doorstop and hit him. It only stunned him but I got to my bedroom and locked the door. That’s 20

when I called the police.” She sniffled and allowed Annie stroke her hair. “By the time they got there he was pounding on the door, trying to get at me.” “Did you file charges?” Annie asked, releasing Libby and looking into her eyes. “No.” Annie stared at her in momentary disbelief before her eyes widened and her lips formed an angry line. “That brother of his?” Libby nodded. “Well, that’s wrong.” Annie stood. “I’m going to give this report to Leon and Keith.” Reaching the door, Annie turned to her. “Can I get you anything? Coffee, juice?” She bit her lip and narrowed her eyes. “I know what else I’m going to get for you. I’m calling my cousin Don Ridley, he’s a lawyer. That ought to scare the crap out of those rotten bullies.” **** Alone again, Libby proceeded to pace. After a few minutes, Keith entered the room. “How are you doing, sweetheart?” She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. You tell me?” “Annie’s got a lawyer coming in for you,” Keith explained, his hands on the thick buckle of his uniform belt. “The registration for the GTO is still in your granny’s name. He has no leg to stand on there. That leaves the question of the fifteen hundred dollars.” “He doesn’t have a job. Where would he get money like that?” “He’s saying it was in a drawer in the trailer you shared.” “I cleared out my savings account. I had four hundred twenty-two dollars and seventy-three cents.” She rummaged 21

through her purse and pulled out a folded bank receipt. “You can see for yourself.” “Okay.” He took the paper. “I think everything’s going your way and we’ll have you out of here by lunchtime.” Drawn to him, she moved to where he stood. Their bodies so close now she felt electricity in the space between them. “How will I be able I thank you for all you’re doing for me?” He leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her lips. “I’m doing my job,” he whispered. A lump formed in her throat. “Is that all there is to it?” He cocked his brow. “After last night you have to ask me that?” “I do. Last night was wonderful, but you don’t even know me.” “That’s true.” He nodded. “But let’s get you out of this mess so I can know you better.” “I wasn’t just an eager piece of tail?” He chuckled. “Remember, you don’t know me either.” His words rang as soft and gentle as the look in his eyes. Without thought, she reached up and touched his cheek. “Maybe my luck is changing.” “Maybe.” He grinned. “Let’s take care of this and we’ll see what happens.” She rubbed her eyes. “What next?” “You need to talk to Leon,” Keith informed her, his voice low. “Dwayne and Chief Parsons are going to be present too. Will you be all right seeing them?” “Will you be with me?” “Sure,” he replied. “All you have to do is tell Leon what you told me.” 22

Ushering her out of the room and down a dark narrow hallway, he led her into Leon Bell’s office. “Come in, Ms. Collins.” Leon smiled from behind his metal desk. She didn’t know what she expected but Leon Bell was not it. Short, stocky, sixtyish with a thick head of gray hair, and large blue eyes. He looked more like an aged cherub than a chief of police. In contrast, Andy Parsons, big, burly, and bearded seemed the devil himself. Dwayne stood and made for her the moment she entered the room. “Where’s my money, you thieving bitch?” His straight black hair clung to his stubbled chin and his brown eyes sparked with fierce hatred. “Sit down, Mr. Parsons,” Leon shouted. “Or I’ll throw your ass in jail.” Dwayne calmed and looked to his brother. “Do something, Andy.” Andy glared at Libby. “Did you take his money?” “What money?” Libby asked. “I paid the bills, I bought the food, and I had the car. He hasn’t worked in months. Where the hell would he get any money?” “I saved it doing odd jobs,” Dwayne protested. “And you said I could have the car if I worked on it. And I did.” “I never said that.” She looked to Leon. “He’s lying. I wouldn’t give Granny’s car to him. It’s all I have left of her.” Silence hung in the air and Keith faced Dwayne. “Can you prove she took your money?” “Well—uh,” he sputtered. “I say she did, it’s gone. She was the only one who coulda taken it.” “Chief Parsons?” Leon inserted. “You have proof?” Andy’s face grew red and his eyes bulged. “I have a warrant for her arrest, that’s enough.” 23

Leon lifted a copy of the warrant from his desktop. Pushing a button on the intercom he said, “Annie, could you get this Judge Logan Michaels on the phone?” Andy grabbed up the warrant and balled it up in a meaty fist. “C’mon, Dwayne. We’re going home.” “But, Andy, what about my money?” Andy glowered at his brother. “Shut up.” “Officer Davidson, will you show these fellows to their car?” Leon asked as he rose from his desk. Keith pulled open the office door and with a raise of his hand, guided them out toward the hallway. “If you’ll come with me, I’ll remind you of how to get out of this building. Hell, I give you directions out of town.” Dwayne glared at Libby as he brushed past her. “I’ll see you again. You can’t get rid of me so easy.” When he reached Keith, he snarled, “You fuckin’ her?’ Keith’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing to angry slits. “She a great lay, ain’t she? Such a tight little pussy.” “You’re disgusting, Dwayne,” Libby cried out before slumping into a chair and burying her face in her hands. **** When Keith returned to Leon’s office a few moments later, a tall slender man with a boyish grin and pale blonde hair followed him. His suit coat draped over one arm and a leather briefcase was in the other. “I’m Don Ridley.” He set the case down and offered her his hand. “I understand you’re having some problems?” Libby shook his hand and nodded. “Yes, but Chief Bell and Officer Davidson seem to have taken care of them.” “Is that right?” 24

“Yes, sorry to waste your time,” Keith said, rubbing his chin. “The mere mention of you seemed helpful though.” Don lifted his case before looking to Libby. “Annie tells me this Dwayne character abused you?” “Yes,” she replied, noting the concern in his green eyes. “I would advise you to press charges.” “She can’t do that,” Keith piped in. “The incident happened in Arkansas and Dwayne’s brother is the chief.” “I see. Would you consider a law suit?” A lawyer wanting to sue, go figure. “I don’t want to see either one of those creeps ever again. I want to forget all this and start my new life.” “Okay.” Don nodded. “At the very least you should file a restraining order against him.” “What do you think about doing that, Libby?” Keith asked. Libby shrugged. “Maybe when I settle somewhere.” She watched Keith for a reaction. In return, he looked at her. The spark between them filled the room and her nipples grew taut at his heated stare. Leon cleared his throat. “You’re leaving White Springs?” Tearing her eyes from Keith, she sat there dumbfounded. “What? I’m sorry, Chief Bell.” “Never mind.” Leon chuckled. “Officer Davidson, you take the rest of the day off and try to talk Miss Collins into staying in our fine town.” “You sure, Boss?” “I think you’ll be able to persuade her.”

Chapter 4 Keith walked Libby to his blue and white squad car, opened the passenger door, and shut it once she situated herself in the car. “Will you stay with me today?” he asked as he slid behind the wheel. He set his gaze on her, his silver eyes intense. She swallowed. “Do you want me to, or do you feel it’s your duty to say that?” He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips before bringing it down to his erect prick. “I want you.” She pulled her hand away as if it burned. “Even after you met Dwayne? And all those things he said about me?” “What, that you’re a thief? I don’t believe that for a minute.” “Don’t you think I’m a slut?” Her voice trembled. “No.” He arched a brow and curled his handsome lips into a smirk. “But he was right about one thing.” “What’s that?” she asked, heat rising into her cheeks. “You have one tight little pussy.” Sticking the key in the ignition, he turned over the motor. “What do you say? I want you to stay. I meant it when I said I want to get to know you better.” He put the car in gear and pulled out of the parking lot. “Maybe for a couple of days,” she replied. 26

With a grin, he turned on the siren and sped off down the highway. “What are you doing?” she laughed and buckled her seatbelt. “I’m having an emergency, sweetheart. I need to get you home to put out a fire.” **** Keith could barely contain himself once he got Libby inside the cottage. “The whole time that fool was talking,” he whispered in her ear, “all I thought of was how generous you were last night.” Her stomach flip-flopped and she fell into him, her mouth seeking out his. Holding her tight, his lips worked hers, and he pressed his tongue into her mouth. Their tongues played upon one another, heightening her desire. She grabbed his head and pulled him close, so close that she could feel the racing of his heart against her bosom. Moving his hands from her waist, he traced the line of her body and slid his fingers beneath her cotton blouse. Taking her breast, he pushed aside her bra and stroked the nipple with his thumb. She threw her head back and moaned. Nibbling her exposed neck, fondling her with one hand, he cupped her ass with his other. “You’re driving me crazy,” she mumbled, grinding her hips against his hardened member. “I want to do more than that,” he whispered. “I want to hear you scream my name. I want your cunt to squeeze me until I come.” Her eyes met his and her lips tingled as her breathing increased. “I like it this way,” she said. Unsnapping her denim skirt and kicking it and her panties to the ground, she posi27

tioned her hands on the back of the couch. “Frisk me, Officer.” He slid out of his navy blue uniform slacks and dropped his belt and holster in a pile before approaching her. Coming up behind her, he set his hands on her hips and patted her down. He slid his finger down one cheek of her ass and then the other. “Oh, what a weapon that is.” She groaned and felt moisture surge from her cunt. “I have a piece lower down. It’s loaded,” she whispered. “I need you to spread your legs,” he said, his voice gravelly. She complied and he set his finger between her legs, massaging her clit, and sliding his finger into the folds of her generous lips. She shivered as he circled her hole before inserting his middle and index fingers into her wetness. A groan escaped her and when he moved his fingers in and out of her, she began to rock against his hand. “Keith, I want you.” His hand on her back, he bent her over the couch. “I want you too.” Holding tight to her hips, he slammed his dick into her and she reveled in his passion. Each thrust, each withdrawal erasing the ugliness of the day and taking it farther and farther away. This moment is what mattered, knowing he wanted her, taking pleasure instead of only giving. With her hands on the couch she pushed against him, matching his rhythm with her own. He was deep inside her and she felt as though she might explode. “Oh, Keith,” she called out his name. “Oh, baby, you are so good.”

At her urging, he increased his momentum. “Tell me you like fucking me,” he ground out. “Tell me you want me to fuck your hot pussy.” “Fuck me,” she groaned as her muscles contracted. “I want you to fuck me hard. Oh, Keith!” she screamed. “Oh, oh, oh!” Her body let loose, wave after wave of bliss took over, and she experienced an orgasm like no other, so intense she feared her legs would give out. His breathing matched hers, his grip on her hips becoming shaky. “Libby,” he moaned and slammed into her as he came. Pulling him from her, she shivered and turned to face him. She touched his cheek, his skin sticky with perspiration. “How is it you’re not married?” He let out a humorless laugh. “I was.” His eyes bore the hurt of her reminder. “And I still would be but she’s dead.” Libby tried to swallow but it was difficult as her throat went dry. “I’m sorry,” she gasped. “What happened?” Keith kissed her forehead and pulled her into a warm embrace. “Not now, Libby. Maybe some other time, okay?” Her arms around his trim waist, her head on his chest, she nodded and despite the closeness of their bodies, she felt him pull away from her. **** Libby and Keith ate lunch in silence. It was odd how less than an hour earlier they were enjoying a fuck-fest and now he couldn’t look her in the eyes. “I think after lunch I’ll get my things together to go,” Libby said, circling the rim of her glass with her fingertip. “You don’t have to do that,” Keith returned, raising his eyes to her face. 29

“I should.” She pushed up from the table. “I’m grateful to you for all your help, but I’ve got a job waiting for me in North Carolina.” Keith stood and rounded the table, stopping when he reached her side. “Stay. I’m sure I can get you a job around here.” Libby tried to smile but her lip quivered and a tear stung her eye. “Why would you want to do that?” “I don’t know.” He shrugged. “I guess it’s ’cause you’re the first woman I’ve been turned on by since Susan died.” Libby touched his arm. He grabbed her hand and kissed her fingers. “You need my protection and I need to feel alive again.” “I make you feel that way?” she asked, her heart fluttering. He didn’t answer, his eyes boring into hers. She recognized the desire in the silver blue depths and her pussy trembled, eager to once again experience him. “What kind of job?” she asked and took a deep breath in a vain attempt to squelch her own surging hormones. “The elementary school needs a secretary, Harvey’s Grocery needs a clerk, and the librarian needs an assistant.” He bent forward and placed his mouth to her ear. “Stay,” he whispered, the warmth of his breath stirring a fire deep in her abdomen. She leaned into him, his hard prick pressing against her. “Stay with me.” Her thoughts grew unclear as her own aroused body took control. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she looked him in the eyes. “You want me, you have me. Please, don’t hurt me.” 30

“I’ll never hurt you,” he replied, and leaning forward he kissed her lips. She melted into him and he responded by holding her tight. Lowering her face, she rested her forehead against his chest. For the first time in her twenty-three years, she felt safe. Keith smoothed her hair and rubbed her back. “Why don’t you go and take a nap? This has been one hell of a day for you.” “No, Keith,” she said and pulled away. Lifting her plate, she carried it to the kitchen sink. “I’ll stay in White Springs, but I won’t take advantage of you.” “I want you to stay. I like having you here,” he said and set his hands on his hips. “Besides, I don’t know how safe it is for you to be on your own right now.” She poured orange-scented dishwashing detergent in the sink and turned on the water. “Why?” she asked, sensing his concern. “You don’t think Dwayne will try something, do you?” “I don’t know.” He shrugged. “He has definite stalker potential. I would feel a lot better if you hung around here and let me keep an eye on things.” Washing her dish, she set it in the drainer, went back to the table, and began to clear it of the rest of the lunch dishes. “I’d want to pay my way,” she informed. “I’m no freeloader.” She grinned at him. “I attract them, but I ain’t one of them.” “How about you be my housekeeper, earn your keep so to speak. When you get work, we’ll talk about monetary costs of staying here.” Her eyes locked on his. “What about when we…” Her voice trailed off and her cheeks grew warm. 31

“Have relations?” He raised his eyebrows. She nodded. “I am no whore.” “I didn’t mean…” She watched him closely, trying to read his thoughts. “We can’t do that again until I pay my own way.” She wondered if she saw disappointment register in his face, but his eyes gave her no indication. “Okay. I don’t expect anything from you but,” he said, with a shake of his head, “if you feel the urge, I’ll be more than happy to oblige.” Resting her back against the kitchen counter, she pursed her lips and raised a questioning brow. “Oh, Officer, I’m sure you would.”

Chapter 5 Libby opened the sleeper sofa and began getting her bed ready. Keith carried fresh sheets, pillows and a blanket down the hall and set them on the beige recliner. “You need anything else?” he asked, taking up the mattress pad and opening it over the bed. “No thanks,” she replied, trying not to look at him. He wore nothing but a pair of burgundy pajama bottoms, his wavy hair wet from the shower and the scent of musky body wash clung to him. She had the desire to run her tongue from his ear to his navel. “You go on to bed.” “All right. I have to go into work tomorrow but I’m thinking maybe I’ll take some vacation time. I want to see you settled in.” “You don’t need to do that. I’m going job-hunting tomorrow. I won’t be here anyway. I want to start earning as soon as I can.” She smoothed the mattress pad and reached for the pastel green bottom sheet. “I’ve worked ever since I was old enough to.” “Where are you going to look first?” She shrugged. “I’ve worked retail. I suspect the grocery store will be my first stop. I can’t type for shit so the office job is out.” Turning to him, she crossed her breasts with her 33

arms, wondering if he saw the aroused state of her nipples. “I do love to read and wouldn’t mind working in a library.” “I like the idea of Harvey’s,” he informed her. “Jimmy Harvey is six foot five, three hundred pounds, and keeps a loaded pistol in his desk drawer.” “Really?” she asked. “Is he a linebacker?” “Dwayne weighs all of one hundred seventy pounds. Jimmy could eat him for lunch.” Libby turned her attention back to making her bed, all the while her mind racing in the direction of seduction. What is it about this man? I get alone with him and all I want to do is fuck him. No, no, no. Remember your promise? Until you can stand on your own feet, you will not indulge. If this is to be anything but sexual, you need his respect! “If you’re sure you don’t want my company?” Her head snapped up from the chore. The smirk on his face boasted humor but his eyes flashed his true intent. She focused on the pillowcase. “I’m sure, Officer Davidson. Good night.” He stepped closer, his body outlined in the light from the floor lamp beside the sofa sleeper. Her body grew rigid, his nearness bringing heat to her face and setting her heart rate up a notch. She bit her lip. Control, Libby. You use self-control. He could be the one. Don’t screw it up. She tossed the pillow onto the bed and set her face forward, refusing to meet his eyes. “I’m tired, Keith. And as tempted as I am, I don’t want to wake up in the morning kicking myself for not keeping my word.” “What do you mean?” His hands now rested on her shoulders, but they may as well been two tons of metal for she was trapped beneath them. His touch was more persuasive than 34

any words or gestures. She wanted him. No one had ever treated her with more kindness and compassion. “You know what I mean,” she stated in a near whisper. “I know you think that if I make love to you that you’re a…” “Make love to me?” she asked. “How can you make love to me when you don’t love me?” His hands slipped from her body and he chuckled. “You’re right. I’m pushing you. It won’t happen again.” “I’m not saying I don’t want it to happen again. I want it to be…” Her voice trailed off. She didn’t have an answer. “Look,” he sighed. “Last night and this morning were about loneliness. I’m not fool enough to think that we’re in love.” He moved to the end of the bed and perched on the edge of the mattress. “Being with you was the first time I’ve been with a woman since Susan. I felt alive, wanted…God dammit, I felt needed by another human being.” She lowered herself on the bed beside him. “I did need you. I needed to know that I was attractive and desired. That I could turn the head of a man as beautiful as you.” He leaned over and placed his head on her shoulder. “I guess we’re both fucked up, huh?” “Yeah.” She giggled. “But at least now we can be fucked up together.” **** Libby woke at first light, showered, put on makeup, and dressed in a pair of black slacks and a silver gray blouse. She was nursing a cup of coffee and munching a peanut butter sandwich when Keith plopped down at the kitchen table. “Morning,” Libby chirped. “Want something to eat, some coffee?” 35
Speed Trap
“Coffee,” Keith grumbled, his elbows on the table, his head in his hands. “You sleep well?” she asked as she filled a blue F.O.P. mug with the steaming black liquid. “Yeah, but it didn’t feel long enough.” “Cream and sugar?” “Cream.” She served him his coffee before taking her seat and lifting her sandwich to her lips. She scanned the newspaper for jobs but the process took less than five minutes. The paper was as small as the town. Keith sipped the coffee and as the caffeine entered his system, he began to perk up. “You going to talk to Jimmy Harvey today or do you want me to talk to him first?” “I’d prefer you didn’t speak to him on my behalf. I’m starting a new life here and I want to be in charge of it.” She swallowed the last bit of her coffee and washed her dish. “You sure you don’t want anything to eat?” He shook his head. “No, I’m going to finish this.” He pointed to his cup. “And head to the gym.” “Good.” She kissed the top of his head and walked down the hallway. Once in his room, she leaned against the wall. Her insides quaked, her legs felt weak and her heart raced. How am I ever going to keep my hands off him? Moving to the bed, she proceeded to straighten the sheets. For the first time she noted the décor of the room. Pale blue walls, white trim, antique dresser with spoon carved embellishment, simple bedside table of a lighter wood and then she saw it. Really saw it. How had she missed the ten-bythirteen gilt-framed photo of Keith and Susan on their wedding day? The picture demanded attention with its predomi36

nant display over the headboard of the bed. He must have put this up since my arrival. The realization stung her senses and her stomach roiled. Young, handsome Keith, dressed in black slacks and a white dinner jacket. His hair long and pulled back in a ponytail. Susan, a petite blonde with large green eyes smiled lovingly up at her new husband, her creamy white gown clinging to her slender body. They were beautiful. Her heart tightened and a lump formed in her throat. How is it I am jealous of a dead woman? With effort, she pulled her eyes from the portrait and finished making the bed. She gathered up dirty clothes, started a load of laundry, and began a shopping list. All the while Keith readied himself for the gym. When he emerged from the bathroom, his eyes sparkled and he smiled. “Wow, you’re good. You’ve done more this morning to get this house together than I do all day.” “It’s my job,” she remarked, squelching the notion of asking him about the photo. What right do I have? He’s known me two and a half days. She was his wife. “That’s your choice,” he replied, his hands on his hips. “I thought I’d compliment you. If you can’t take one of those, that’s a sad statement.” That said, he plopped down on a kitchen chair and started to put his tennis shoes on. “I’ll be at the gym for a couple hours and then off to work. Want to meet for lunch?” Running her finger over the back of one of the chairs, she stared at the grain of the wood. “No, I don’t know what I’ll be doing at lunchtime. Maybe in the middle of an interview.” “Okay. I’ll see you tonight.” He popped up from the seat and moved to where she stood. Pulling a set of keys from his 37

sweatpants pocket, he handed them to her. “There’s a house key for the front door here and the keys to my GTO. I want you to drive it.” “No.” She shook her head. “I’m not getting behind the wheel of your baby.” “Why not? If Dwayne hasn’t left town yet, he’s going to recognize your car. You’ll be incognito this way.” “If something were to happen…” He caressed her cheek with the back of his hand. “A car can be repaired or replaced. You, Libby Collins, are one of a kind.” Her legs grew weak beneath her and she closed her eyes. “Don’t you sweet-talk me, Keith.” She pressed her face against his outstretched hand. When he kissed her lips, her mind urged her to stop but her body wouldn’t allow it. His mouth manipulated hers, his hands stroked her, and his body taunted hers. Her skin heated, her breasts ached for his lips, her cunt screamed for release. “Keith,” she groaned. “Please.” “Please, what?” he whispered. Her eyes fluttered open and she gazed into his face. Delighted, his mouth set in a selfsatisfied smirk. She felt as if a bucket of cold water had doused her fire. “You bastard,” she grumbled. “Take the keys.” He chuckled and pressed them in her hand. “I’m leaving now. I need to get rid of some of this— uh—frustration.” Throwing his gym bag over his shoulder, he pulled open the door. Before going, he faced her. “Get that job so you and I can resume fucking. Sweetheart, you started with me the other night and now I can’t seem to get enough of you.” 38

She watched from the window as he strode from the house and got into his squad car. Fingering the keys he had given her, she grinned. “I’m one of a kind.”

Chapter 6 Pulling into the parking lot of Harvey’s Grocery, Libby’s stomach lurched and her hands trembled. She didn’t mind working but she loathed the idea of a job interview. Being judged or misjudged was frightening. What ifs took control of her mind. What if I don’t make a good impression? What if Jimmy Harvey thinks I’m a loser, what if, what if, what if… “Stop it,” she whispered. “You’re one of a kind, remember?” She pulled the key from the ignition. The car quieted immediately, not at all like her clunker that sputtered and coughed with a chronic case of engine run-on. Taking a deep breath, she jumped from the car. Sighing, she looked at the old rundown grocery. The building, far past its prime, sported large windows filled with newspaper ads of this week’s sale items. The tan bricks dated it to the late 60’s and the metal roof needed paint. Before she got into the store, a huge man filled the door and stepped out. Fiftyish, burly, curly salt-and-pepper hair and beard. He looked like Paul Bunyan’s older brother. “Hey.” He nodded. “Sweet ride. That looks an awful lot like Keith Davidson’s car.” “It is. He lent it to me.”

“Well yee haw to you.” He narrowed his eyes and stared at her. “You must be the one all the old biddies at the hairdresser are talking about.” “What?” she asked, a sickening fullness in her chest. He grinned. “Don’t worry about it. Anybody coming, going, guilty, or innocent, gets gossiped about.” Her purse slipped from her shoulder. Pushing it back up, she smiled. “I need a job.” His eyes flew open and he laughed. “Well, all right. Come into my office. Your name Lizzie?” “Nope, but close.” Entering the building, she smelled the produce section. Sweet, with a hint of overripeness. The lights glared on the white and green tiled floor. She passed the cashier, an older woman with sloping shoulders and white hair. “That’s my mother,” Jimmy informed her. “She’ll be going to the hairdresser later, Liza?” “Nope.” At the back of the store, he ushered her into a broom closet office and asked her to sit. Her back straight, her eyes forward, she waited for him to begin his barrage of questions. With difficulty, he lowered his massive body behind a desk that was too close to the wall for his comfort. He smiled and presented her with an application. “Fill this out, Lisa?” “Okay, I’ll fill it out and it’s Libby.” “Like the canned fruit?” She nodded. “Yep.” **** By five-thirty, Libby was exhausted. Her first day of work tired her out, her feet hurt, her back ached, and a headache lurked behind her eyes. It wasn’t so much that it was difficult 41

but how would she ever overcome the boredom? The most stimulation she received was trying not to tell Madge Harvey more than she needed to know. Jimmy’s warning of gossip had not fallen on deaf ears. Madge seemed kind and grandmotherly until Libby overheard her talking to Jimmy. “That Mandy Evans is a slut. You know she’s gone and run off with that singer from Nashville?” “Good for her,” Jimmy grumbled. “What the hell do you care, Ma? You never liked her no way.” Libby shook off the memory and with a yawn, set a bag of groceries on the kitchen counter. It was good to be home. She rubbed her forehead. Not your home. As she put the perishables away, she heard a car pull into the drive. Her heart thudded and she rushed to the door. Keith strolled up the sidewalk, his sunglasses resting on the top of his head, a briefcase in his hand. “Hey, girl. Heard you got a job. You enjoy working for Jimmy?” “I wanted to tell you,” she grumbled. “You should have given the station a call immediately.” He smiled, and her heart warmed. “Madge knows, the town knows.” She took a step back from the open door to allow him entrance. “Want to go out and have a celebratory dinner?” “I bought some food,” she informed him. “Jimmy spotted me a twenty till payday next week.” “That reminds me. Annie wanted me to ask you if you were going to pick up your wallet.” “Yeah, I should.” He stepped inside and set the briefcase on the floor by the door. “Want some company?” “You’ll go with me? 42

He raised a brow. “I just about have to.” “Why’s that?” she asked, feigning indignation. “You think I can’t?” “Oh no.” He snickered. “I know you can and with that lead foot, I’m sure you’d be there in a heartbeat.” She grimaced at the reminder of her speeding. “It’s not my fault White Springs is nothing but a speed trap.” With a quick step toward her, he backed her into the wall. She set her hands on his chest. “Speed trap, huh?” he said in a low tone, his palms resting on the wall, his arms on either side of her head, and his face inches from hers. “Are you forgetting all I let pass ’cause of your tears?” Lifting her eyes to his, she felt her legs weaken beneath her. “No, I’ve not forgotten a single thing you’ve done for me.” “And I’ve not forgotten a single thing you’ve done for me.” He put his mouth to her ear. “As fast as you’ve turned my life upside down, I think you’re the trap.” Moisture from her sudden arousal filled her panties and she bit her lip, hoping the pain would slow her rising lust. “Keith,” she whined. “You’re not playing fair.” He pulled her earlobe between his teeth, nibbling it. “I’m not playing, sweetheart.” His mouth traveled from her ear down to her neck, slowly and expertly turning her body against her. Shivers of delight showed themselves along her overheated body, blood coursed through her veins, warming her lower extremities and leaving her light headed. “You want me, Libby. I know you do, I feel it.” She didn’t answer and he put his lips to hers. Gentle at first, he 43

leisurely explored her mouth. His tongue was soft as he toyed with hers. She’d never been kissed with such tenderness and longing. He spoke to her of his need without saying a word. She responded by lowering her hands and allowing him to move closer. As if sensing her surrender, he slid his hands down the wall and wrapped his arms around her. “Come to bed with me. Let me feel your sweet body next to mine. Let me love you, Libby.” His eyes gleamed with passion. Let me love you, Libby rang in her ears and her mouth curled into a contented smile. “You think you might love me someday?” she asked, and before the words were out, she wished she had the power to take them back. His face bore the shock of her statement, his stare grew hard, his mouth opened but no words came. He took a step back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t push you so hard.” She reached for his arm but he had all ready started down the hallway. “Don’t go, Keith.” She followed him into his room. When she entered he didn’t look at her, he was staring at the photo over the bed. His expression was one of sorrow, his mouth a straight line, his eyes registered only pain. “I was the one pushing. I’m sorry,” she said. He turned to look at her and she felt as though she may cry. So much hurt; so much sadness. She wanted to erase his despair. “It’s all right,” he whispered. “I feel it too. I feel as though my heart is coming out of hibernation.” He blew out a frustrated breath. “I’ve been shut down for five years, Libby.” “It’s not fair what happened to Susan or you.” A tear rolled down her cheek. “Lots of things aren’t fair, Keith.” 44

“No, sweetheart, they’re not.” He wiped her tear away and a grin lifted the corner of his mouth. “Don’t you cry because of me.” “I can’t help it. I understand losing someone you love.” She sniffled and he handed her a hankie. “Never seeing them again; never hearing their voice.” Wiping her eyes she added, “And Susan was young and beautiful.” “She was.” He turned back to the portrait. “Our wedding day was the happiest day of my life.” “You look happy and so much in love.” “Susan and I went through school together, starting with kindergarten. Thought she was my soul mate.” “I know you miss her, but at least you’ve known true love. With the exception of my grandmother, I’ve never felt valued.” Putting his arm around her shoulder, he set his gaze upon her. “You’ve lost a lot in your young life, haven’t you?” She nodded. “I’m sorry if I hurt you, running off like that.” “I understand. If I could erase that moment, I would.” His brows came together. “Don’t be sorry. You spoke from your heart and that’s a gift to me.” He brushed a kiss across her forehead and smoothed her cheek with the back of his hand. “Oh, Keith, what happens next?” “I don’t know, sweetheart. But it’s the first time in a long time that I want to find out.”

Chapter 7 Libby stood behind the register as Madge instructed her on the finer points of scanning bar codes. “We got these damned things ’cause Jimmy said it’s the future. I liked punching in prices but I got outvoted.” Libby smiled when the old woman shot her a look. Her wrinkled face bore her irritation. “After I teach you this, Jimmy wants you to start stocking in the back.” Libby yawned. “You enjoying your stay in White Springs?” “So far.” “You like Keith?” Libby wondered how long it would take Madge to bring Keith up. “Yes.” “How did you meet him?” Madge tilted her head and smiled. She sure can turn on the grandmotherly charm. Now how the hell do I tell her without making myself look like a needy slut? “He’s a friend of the family.” Madge eyed her with suspicion. “That right?” “Sure.” “You knew Susan, too?” “No. Didn’t get the pleasure of meeting her.” 46

“She was a sweet girl,” Madge informed her, threading a fresh roll of receipt paper in the cash register. “Always loving and kind. Butter wouldn’t melt, as they say.” “Yes, it’s a shame what happened to her.” “I’ll say. That’s why Jimmy always keeps a loaded pistol in his desk. ’Cause he don’t want what happened to her to happen to us.” Libby shifted her weight from one foot to the other and leaned against the counter. It took all her self-control not to delve deeper into the story. If she did, Madge would know she was a liar. “Since you’re stayin’ in White Springs, you gonna live with Keith or you gonna get your own place?” As if on cue, Keith stepped into the store. His gaze scanned the produce area before coming to light on Libby. The appreciative stare, the warm smile, and the unspoken attraction sent a jolt of electricity through her body. At his approach, Libby had to push down the desire to giggle. He made her feel like a five-year-old girl on Christmas morning, but the present she wanted from him was not under a tree but navy blue uniform slacks. “Afternoon, ladies.” He nodded, first to Madge and then to Libby. “What can we do for you, Officer?” Madge asked. “Well, Ms. Harvey, I’d like to know if I can take Ms. Collins here out for a bit of lunch.” Madge looked at her watch. “It’s eleven.” She grimaced. “I go at eleven-thirty, Jimmy at twelve. She goes after him.” Libby’s dislike for Madge had begun the day before but her level soared when the woman came between her and Keith. 47

“But as you said, it’s eleven.” Keith winked. “How about it Madge? Give me some time with her before I have to sit in my hot squad car trying to pinch speeders and truants.” Madge pursed her lips. “Well, I suppose that’ll be all right.” She turned to Libby. “But from now on, you don’t go till twelve-thirty.” Keith grabbed Libby’s hand and the pair walked out into the warm spring morning. The sunshine felt good on her face and a cool breeze tickled her cheeks. “You know.” She scowled. “You and I are going to be the talk of the beauty shop this afternoon.” “I don’t care, do you?” “No.” She shook her head. “I don’t care. I’ve been the topic of gossip in my hometown for years. But I don’t suppose you’re used to it.” “I am.” Lifting his hand, he pointed down the narrow street to Cousin Chester’s Restaurant. “You want to get something to eat?” “Yes, but if anyone asks, I told Madge that I was a friend of your family’s.” **** Lunch flew by and when Keith dropped her back off at the grocery, he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “I want to kiss you,” he said, grinning. “I want to be kissed.” “You hold that thought and when you get home tonight, you be ready.” She smiled, not knowing what to say next. “I want to kiss you all over,” he whispered. “I’ll start with those beautiful lips. I want to lick your tits and suck your pussy.” 48

Her body trembled at his words, and she yearned to feel him inside her almost more than she could bear. Lifting her gaze, his eyes bored a hole into her thoughts, leaving her speechless with their intensity. “You want me to?” She managed a nod. “Good, now get in there and don’t you worry about what you tell Madge. Friend of the family is fine, but the truth is fine too. No matter what you and I do, we’re under scrutiny. Live your life, Libby, and don’t give a fuck what small-minded prudes say.” Libby watched him go, admiring his broad shoulders and narrow waist. A smile tugged at her lips and warmth filled her heart. It would be so easy to love him, genuinely and truly love him. “Don’t get any ideas about him,” Madge remarked from behind her. “He’ll never remarry. Susan was the love of his life and as pretty and sweet as you seem to be, he’s not going to set up house with you.” Facing her, Libby shrugged her shoulders. “Must you always say whatever comes into your mind?” Madge’s mouth dropped open and Libby walked to the back of the store, her giddiness unhindered by Madge’s disapproval. **** Pulling into the drive, Libby was relieved to see Keith’s squad car parked next to her heap. As she put the car in park and swung open the door, she heard Elvis and Prissy barking in the backyard. The scent of pine, the sight of deep purple clematis coiling up the mailbox, the soft pinks of the sunset, all made her certain this was indeed a small piece of heaven. The thought dispersed as a mangled tennis ball landed with a 49

soggy thud at her feet and Elvis limped toward her, his dingy white face filled with the exuberance from play. She bent down and gave him a gentle pat before lifting the ball and throwing it in the direction from which it came. Keith rounded the corner wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants. “Hey, woman of the house.” She melted at the greeting. “Hey, you play with the dogs?” “Got to, they missed us today.” Prissy followed close behind, a knotted sock dangling from her mouth. “You miss me today?” he asked. “What if I did?” He took a step closer and brushed a kiss across her cheek. The heat between their bodies drew her nearer, the promise of what was to come increasing the beat of her heart. Lifting her hands, she wrapped her arms around his waist and looked up at him. “Did you miss me?” she asked. His lids hooded over his smoldering eyes. “Yes. Why am I thinking about you all the time?” She leaned into him. “I don’t know, but I’m glad you are.” Lowering his face, he put his mouth atop hers. He tasted of mouthwash and smelled of soap, his chin free of stubble. A soft moan rumbled in his throat when she parted her lips to allow his tongue entrance. Pulling away, he stared at her and smiled. “You want some dinner?” “Yeah.” Libby nodded. “That would be nice.” She took him by the hand and led him inside. Standing in front of the sofa in the living room, he grabbed her and held her tight, burying his face in her hair. “You smell nice.” 50

“I smell like the produce aisle.” She giggled. He laughed. “Well, maybe a little. Go and take a hot bath or something and I’ll get dinner ready.” “Okay,” she answered, pulling away. The smile slid from his face. “We’ll need to have a talk after that.” Her heart sank like an anchor. This was not what she had hoped to hear. The seriousness of his face, and the tone of his voice did not bode well. She swallowed past the lump that threatened to close her throat. She squelched the urge to question him. If he’s going to throw me out, I’d rather be clean and fed when he does it. “I won’t be long.” She rose on her toes and placed a soft kiss on his lips, watching him for a reaction. His eyes appeared distant despite the grin that played upon his handsome mouth. “Take your time, sweetheart.” **** Libby showered, shaved, and dressed in a soft pink sundress. It was good to be out of the stained burgundy smock that Jimmy and Madge insisted she wear. Her blouse was moist with perspiration and her jeans bore the brunt of a watermelon mishap. Definitely good to be clean. Applying light makeup, she hoped to disguise what was left of a bruise Dwayne had left behind. The mark was little more than a slight green discoloration on her left cheek but a scant two weeks ago, it was a black, blue, and purple badge. Time, she decided, was a funny thing. Despite the bruises that remained, Dwayne, Arkansas, and all her troubles seemed years away. “Stop it,” she scolded. Thinking of Dwayne made her stomach ache. For the first time in her life, she was with a 51

man who cared about her and she felt confident would never hurt her. Now she wasn’t sure. “We’ll need to talk after that,” rang in her head like mourning bells. After brushing her teeth, she combed her hair and took in a deep breath. Walking down the hallway, she again looked at the photos. She recognized Annie, Chief Bell, and Susan. There she was, beautiful, blonde, and happy. “Libby?” Keith called from the kitchen. She moved to the kitchen and found him standing at the sink, elbow deep in dishwater. “Hand me a towel, would you?” The kitchen smelled of spicy meat, and she saw a bag of tortillas, grated cheddar cheese, and lettuce on the countertop. “What can I do to help?” she asked, setting the sage green towel in his dripping hand. “Uh.” He looked around. “Pour the wine? You like wine, don’t you?” “Sure.” But the truth was, Dwayne was a beer drinker, and she’d only had wine on a handful of occasions. Keith popped the cork and handed her the bottle. His warm fingers lingered on her hand as she took the container and he blew out his breath. That small reaction to her touch eased her mind, but only a little. She tried to relax as she filled the wineglasses on the already set table. She lifted her glass to her lips and drew in a mouthful of the semi-sweet liquid. It rolled down her throat and she savored the flavor. “Good,” she remarked. “You sit. I’ll be right over with the grub.” 52

Libby sank down onto the wooden seat and set her elbows on the dinette table, watching him. Oblivious of her stare, he went about preparing the food with practiced hands. He was beautiful, his fingers nimble as he arranged the enchiladas on the serving platter. “What did you want to talk to me about?” she asked, unable to quell the doubts any longer. “Let’s eat first and talk after.” He didn’t look up from his chore. “Guacamole and sour cream?” She shook her head. “I’ve got some diced tomatoes, too.” She shifted in her chair and finished the contents of her glass before refilling it. “What’s going on, Keith?” He looked to her now. “Dinner.” “You want me to leave? Are we moving too fast?” “What?” he asked, his voice rising with surprise. “Do you want me out of your house?” “Hell, no.” He rubbed his hands on the towel, strode to her, and fell to his knee. “I like having you here.” She let out a breath that she hadn’t realized she was holding. “What? You have to tell me.” He pulled his fingers through his hair. “Dwayne has not left White Springs.” She clutched the skirt of her dress. “Are you sure?” Keith nodded and placed his hand atop hers. “Annie saw him loitering outside the gas station.” “Can you make him leave?” “I’d like to,” Keith said bitterly. “I’d like to see him in jail.” He ran a finger over her fading bruise. “But until he does 53

something against the law, there’s not a damned thing I can do legally.” “Can I get that restraining order?” “Yeah, a temporary one.” He sighed. “They last fifteen days.” “He’ll just wait that out.” “I know.” Keith nodded. “We do have the pictures and we can present them to a judge. With luck, we’ll get an extended order of protection. That lasts a year.” “Or, I could pack up and go to North Carolina as planned. That way you don’t have to be involved in my problems.” She watched him, expecting him to nod and dismiss her. “I am involved, sweetheart.” Tears filled her eyes at the earnestness of his soft expression. “Oh, Keith, I don’t know what to say.” “Say you’ll stay.” “Are you sure you want all this trouble?” “Libby.” He took up her hand and kissed the knuckles. “I want to spend time with you. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that folks always have some sort of trouble tagging along behind them. Yours just happens to be a puny redneck.” Her gaze caressed his face and she felt a flood of desire spread from her heart to her abdomen. She leaned forward and kissed him, all of her emotion, love, fear, want, and need spilling over. He accepted her desire and matched it with his own. Standing, he pulled her to her feet and led her toward his bedroom. “Not in there,” she whispered. “Why not?” he asked, his brows joined in confusion. “We’ve been together there before.” 54

“Not with Susan looking down at us.” “The photo?” “Yes.” She licked her lips and took a deep breath. “Why did you put that up after…” He shrugged his shoulders. “Guilt I guess. I’ve been alone for quite sometime and I haven’t strayed from her memory.” Her hand on her heart, she smiled. “Oh, Keith.” “You caught me off-guard.” **** Keith lowered Libby down upon the hide-a-bed mattress; his long lean body atop hers; his leg between hers as he kissed her. Libby moaned as his lips traced the length of her neck. He taunted her nipple through the thin fabric of her dress. Sliding down the shoulder strap, he exposed her breast to his hungry stare. “You’re beautiful,” he said, drawing the soft pink nipple into his mouth. Her flesh reacted to his gentle urgings and she arched her body against him. “Oh, you make me feel good,” she muttered. Pulling himself up on his elbows, he stared down at her. “You make me feel.” Seizing her lips, he pressed his tongue into her mouth. She accepted the probe and savored his flavor, stroking his tongue with hers. Her hands traveled down his back and finding the bottom of his shirt, she pushed it up; her fingers eager to experience the smooth muscles beneath. He pushed her dress up and cupped her ass, grinding his pelvis against hers. Tugging at her panties, he slipped his hand beneath the silky fabric and slid them down her hips. Gliding his hand up her thigh, he plunged a finger into her moisture. Her breath caught in her throat as he taunted her by rubbing 55

her clit. Her ass tightened and she bucked against his hand; her pussy running over with her desire. His lips moved with ease over her body before he pulled her legs apart and buried his face in her cunt. She groaned and bit her lip to slow down her almost instantaneous climax. “Keith,” she cried out as he flicked his tongue in and out of her, his nose pressing against her button. She writhed beneath him. Her moans grew louder until she finally came, her muscles contracting in blissful release. Her body shuddered, her eyes rolled upward and she trembled. Keith raised to a kneeling position, wiping the moisture from his mouth, a self-satisfied grin on his face. Libby sat up, urging the blood back into her head. With greedy fingers, she tugged at his pants. “I want all of you,” she whispered. He kissed her again and she smelled her own scent mixed with his cologne. Lying back, she opened her legs, raising her knees on either side of his well-defined abdomen. He teased her, placing his penis in her opening just far enough that her lips grazed its head. With each withdraw and reentry, she braced herself to take all of him in and yet he evaded her, his eyes closed and his head lolling back with his ecstasy. “Keith,” she panted. At the sound of her voice, his eyes came to rest on her face and in their depths, she recognized his passion, his lust and was it wishful thinking? Or did she see genuine tenderness? A smile touched his lips and he pushed himself deep inside her. Her body quaked as he began rhythmically moving in and out, pressing so hard against her, that he raised her off the bed. She accepted him, clawing at his back, and wrapping her legs around him to allow him deeper access to her. Each thrust brought her closer to an edge she had never experi56

enced before; every inch of him pleasing her flesh. As she climaxed her legs shook and her limbs tingled with rapture. Looking at Keith, he seemed shrouded by sparkling light, his gorgeous face bearing his own pleasure. His lower lip twitched, the muscles in his neck flexed and with a quiver, he released himself with a guttural groan of gratification. Satisfied, he lowered himself, his head resting upon her breast. She stroked his hair and marveled at the softness of it. I love you. She bit the feelings back, unprepared for rejection. He rolled off her and stared at the ceiling, his breathing heavy, a fine film of perspiration covering his face. She snuggled up to him, with her head on his chest, and his strong steady heartbeat pulsating in her ear. “You’re the one. It’s never been like this for me before. You’re so generous, so unashamed.” Kissing the top of her head, he pushed her hair from her face. “So are you. And it’s never been like this for me either. You’re wonderful.” Closing her eyes, she savored his words. How often had she wondered if she were a good lover? Now this man with practiced hands and natural abilities found her to be wonderful. It wasn’t a pledge of undying love, but it was a beginning. Warmth crept over her and closing her eyes, she felt herself drift off into delicious sleep.

Chapter 8 Keith pushed the buttons on the radio trying to find a station playing music and not filling the airwaves with idle chitchat. His left hand on the steering wheel, he sighed and flipped off the radio. “Thanks for coming along with me,” Libby said, her head against the headrest. “Wanted to.” He grinned. “Besides, you don’t have a license right now. Don’t want you getting pulled over.” He set a hand on her knee and gave it a squeeze. She giggled and pushed at his fingers. “Know how you like a man in uniform.” “I like you in uniform and out,” she teased. He stole a quick glance before looking back at the road. “Don’t I know it.” His hand still on her leg, he slid it up her thigh and gave her pussy a gentle nudge. “Don’t start with me,” she warned, slapping his hand away. “Before you know it, we’ll be on the side of the road going at it like a couple of teenagers.” “Would that be bad?” he asked as he maneuvered the car between a semi and a pickup truck. “You know it would be great.” She turned her head and stared out the window at the scenery. Hills covered in trees that showed off their fresh foli58

age, wildflowers on the side of the road. Tennessee was sure a beautiful state. How long will I be here? Fresh doubts crept into her mind and a jolt of adrenaline passed through her core. The idea of a life with Keith crept back in from the corners of her brain. She imagined herself standing next to him in a beautiful wedding gown, with his ring on her finger. The dread of reality tugged at the glorious scene and she felt a deep sorrow saturate her thoughts. Truth was she would probably end up alone in White Springs in the next few months. She’d pack her bag and try to find a place to go. After all, Harvey’s Grocery was not a lifelong occupation. Just a stopgap measure until something better came along. Maybe that was what she was to Keith. Something to fill the void, on a temporary basis. “Why so quiet all the sudden? We’re supposed to be having a good time…our first date, you know.” With a smile, she decided that no matter how long this lasted, she was going to enjoy every moment. Even if he weren’t hers for long, he was hers for now. “Our first date, huh? I don’t kiss on the first date.” “We’ll see about that, won’t we?” **** Back in the car, Libby searched through her wallet, and found everything left exactly as she remembered. Even the credit cards remained in their usual slot. “There still are good people in this world, aren’t there?” “Yep, there are,” Keith replied. “It’s high time you realized that and that not everyone is out to hurt you.” “It’s difficult to trust people after all the things that have happened to me.” 59

His eyes grew soft as they scanned her face. “I know. It’s a lesson I’m struggling with myself.” Bringing the car to life, he pulled out of the central precinct’s lot. “Where you want to go now?” he asked. “Graceland? Mud Island? The Peabody Hotel to see those cool ducks?” “They all sound fun but I’ve got two more days till payday and I think I should give you the money from my wallet for gas and rent.” “No.” He frowned. “You’ve done laundry, cleaned the house, and hell, you even bathed Elvis and Prissy. You’re earning your keep. Besides, I’m an old-fashioned kind of guy.” She tilted her head. “How so?” “I take you out on a date, I treat. Sweetheart, if you haven’t noticed yet, I plan on dazzling you.” “Oh, Keith.” She giggled. “You already have.” “Well, let me at least treat you to some genuine Memphis barbecue. I guarantee you’ll love it.” “It does sound good.” “And a woman’s got to eat.” **** Dinner over, Keith rested while Libby drove. He dozed in the passenger seat, his jeans unbuttoned to allow his full stomach relief. Libby smiled, recalling how much Keith ate. She’d never seen a man put away so much food and although she managed to keep her caloric intake under two thousand, she had to admit the barbecue was the best she’d ever had, dry rubbed and tender. The sun had set and left behind stray strands of orange and yellow that kept the sky from darkness. As she pulled up the driveway, something registered as wrong but her mind dismissed it. 60

“Keith, honey, wake up. We’re home.” His eyes opened and a smirk curled his lips. “Hey. Give me a kiss before we go inside, won’t you?” She leaned forward and took his face between her hands. She put her lips to his and felt the now familiar spark of desire ignite. “Ever done it in a car?” he asked, his voice husky. “No,” she whispered. “Want to?” She straightened and glanced out the windshield and that’s when she noticed the oddity again. This time she squinted to examine the strange form on the front porch. “What’s that…” She began to ask but before the words had passed her lips, Keith was out of the car and rushing down the walkway. Libby followed close behind. “Oh shit, shit, shit!” he shouted. “How the fuck did Elvis get out of the pen?” Bending to investigate, Libby saw the dog’s fur matted with dried blood. “Keith, is he dead?” Keith set his hand on Elvis’s side. “He’s still breathing, but it’s shallow.” “Get him to the vet or something,” Libby sobbed. “He’s a sweetie. Save him, Keith.” “I’ll take him to Doc Corman’s but first go and see if you can find Prissy. She’s probably hiding in the doghouse.” Libby sprinted toward the backyard, calling the schnauzer. “Prissy, where are you, girl?” Reaching the pen, she found the gate open and the chain in a silver pile on the ground. “Prissy, where are you?” On her knees before the doghouse, she couldn’t see into the small dark opening but she heard a low whimper. 61

“Priscilla, it’s all right. It’s me.” Libby slid her hand in and the dog licked her fingers. With gentle prodding and petting, Libby was able to coax the dog from her lair. She inspected her and found no real injury, just a small nick on her ear. Lifting her, she carried her back around front. Keith sat on the stoop, cradling Elvis in his arms. “You should go,” she whispered. “Pris is fine.” “She’s not cut or anything?” “Nothing big. Just a spot on her ear.” Libby watched as Keith rushed to the squad car and took off with lights flashing. She looked down at the one-eyed dog and sighed. “I hope Elvis is all right. If he’s not, I don’t know what you or Keith will do.” **** Libby sat on the sofa, watching television and stroking Priscilla’s coarse grey fur. The dog slept and shook with fear intermittently. With each spell, Libby would talk to her and pet her, trying to relieve her upset. An hour had passed before the phone rang. Relief took control and she smiled. “That must be Keith,” she explained to Prissy as she lifted the cordless phone to her ear. “You think that getting a restraining order against me will keep me away from you?” Her heart sped up so fast that she thought she might faint. “Dwayne?” she whispered. It had been just over a week since she heard him speak but he sounded strange and foreign, a voice from the distant past. “You bet it’s me, you bitch.” “Go home and leave me alone.” 62

“I have taken care of you for three years and you think that because you want it to be over, it’s over? Think again. I ain’t done with you. And that boyfriend of yours better watch his back.” “Don’t you drag him into your insanity!” she shouted into the phone. “And why shouldn’t I? He’s fuckin’ my woman.” She hung up on him and fought back the tears of fear mingled with anger. “How dare he talk to me like that,” she sobbed. When the phone rang again, she didn’t answer. It rang and rang, seven, eight, nine times. “Stop it,” she ground out at the screaming receiver. “Let me alone.” Rushing over to her suitcase, she threw it on the sofa and began packing. Prissy followed her from room to room as she gathered up her toiletries. “I have to get out of here,” she murmured. “He’ll hurt Keith. I bet he hurt Elvis.” Raking her trembling fingers through her hair, she steadied herself. She was hyperventilating, her lips were numb, and each breath felt laced with ice water. Closing her eyes, she focused on her breathing. “Slow down.” Calm was beginning to eke its way in when Prissy alerted her with a string of yapping barks. She spun around in time to see Keith enter the room. His face was pale, his eyes hollow. “Why didn’t you answer the goddamned phone?” “I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was you.” “Who else would it be? You scared me half to death.” He took a step forward and spotting her luggage, he grabbed her arm. “Where are you going?” “I can’t stay,” she said, her voice catching in her throat. “Why not?” he asked, his concern evident by his tone. 63

“Dwayne. He called me, threatened me, and then threatened you. I can’t have him hurting you.” Keith chuckled. “Sweetheart, he’s a bully, he won’t come near me.” “You don’t think so?” “Hell, no.” Unwilling to allow him to dismiss her concerns she pulled her arm free. “I think I know him better. He’s mean, Keith, and he hates you. Why I-I bet he’s responsible for what happened to Elvis.” “No.” He shook his head. “Elvis has a barbed wire cut. Nothing as sinister as Dwayne slicing him up.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “Is he going to be all right?” “Don’t know yet.” Keith exhaled loudly. Libby turned back to her packing. “I hope he’ll be fine. Pris is upset. You may want to give her some extra TLC for a few days. And if Elvis doesn’t make it back, it’ll take longer than that.” Keith came up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders. “Don’t go.” Closing her eyes, she fought back her tears. She longed to stay but what if Dwayne kept his promise to hurt them? If it were just her, she would risk it—she’d done that every day for three years—but not Keith. He meant too much to put in harm’s way. “I need you to stay,” he whispered. “No, you don’t.” He wrapped his arms around her waist and set his mouth to her ear. “Yes, I do.” 64

His warm breath and warmer words raised a delightful chill on her clammy skin. She turned to face him, her eyes locked on his. “Don’t run away from this, Libby. We’ll both regret it for the rest of our lives.” “I’m scared.” “I know you are.” He ran his forefinger along her jaw line. “I am too. I’m scared you’re going to leave and I’ll have to go back to the way it was.” “I don’t know. I couldn’t live with myself if something were to happen to you. I…” “Nothing is going to happen to me if you stay. If you leave, you will hurt me. I’m falling for you, Libby.” The earnestness of his words, plus the tenderness in his eyes, and she was lost. “Oh, Keith. What am I supposed to say to that?” His expression changed, his brows joining in confusion. “I don’t have any expectations of what you’re supposed to say.” He lowered himself on the couch, and placed his elbows on his knees. “I want to know where I stand with you. You’re so damned ready to pack your bags and go. Why is that?” Her heart ached with love for him. Standing before him, she dropped to her knees and stroked his forearms. “I’m damaged goods, Keith.” Her voice cracked and tears spilled from her eyes. “It’s difficult for me to trust anyone.” “I know we’ve known one another a short time. But something pulled me to you since your first teardrop.” He smoothed away the liquid from her eyes. “I want to be someone you run to, not from.” “Oh,” she sobbed. “If I were to tell you I love you, you wouldn’t think I’m crazy?” 65

A grin tugged at his lips. “No. I’d have to honest, though.” He took her face in his hands. “If you were to tell me you love me, I’d have to admit that I love you, too.” When he kissed her this time, the passion was present but so was feeling, true and pure. The beauty of what they shared something she knew she would always treasure. He stood. Pulling her to her feet, he held her close, his hands traveling over her back, her face buried in his chest. “Will you stay?” She nodded her response and he lifted her into his arms, carrying her to his bedroom. Setting her on the bed, he stared down at her before moving to the picture of his wedding day. He looked at it a moment before taking it down. “You don’t have to do that.” “It’s time.” “Keep it out somewhere. I don’t expect to take her place.” “No one can. But for the first time, I realize that I have room for someone else too.” Carrying the picture, he disappeared down the hall and returned a few moments later. “Susan wouldn’t want me to be alone and I think you two might have been friends.” “What sort of person was she?” Libby asked as Keith lowered himself on the bed next to her. “Sweet, loving, and generous.” Libby smiled and stroked his arm. “How long were you married?” “Almost a year but we were high school sweethearts. We were a couple for over five.” She set a hand on his thigh. “When you’re ready to tell me what happened, I want to know.” 66

“Of course you do.” He kissed her cheek and flung himself back on the bed. “I’m tired now, sweetheart. It’s been a long day. Mind if we turn in?” **** Libby showered and crawled into bed beside Keith. He stirred a little when she pulled the covers up over her shoulder. His breathing resumed a deep steady pace and she closed her eyes and listened to him. It felt good to be next to him, and rolling over, she pressed her body against his. His eyes fluttered open and he smiled. “Hi.” “Is it all right that I’m here?” He pressed his lips to hers, his hands exploring her body. Taking her hand, he placed it on his erect prick. “What do you think?” She giggled. “I think you’re a light sleeper.” “I am.” She kissed him now, needing to show him how much he meant to her. Straddling his waist, she pulled her cotton nightie over her head. His hands at her breasts, groping them, he gently pinched the nipples until they ached for his mouth. She leaned forward, and he sucked and licked at her before again seizing her lips. “Oh, baby, I want you so bad,” he mumbled. She pushed his shorts over his knees and lowered her dripping pussy over his dick. He slid with ease inside her and she bit her lip at the intensity in which she felt him. She trembled as she began to slide up and down on his shaft. He gripped her hips, his fingers digging into her flesh as he led her body in their seductive dance. Each time she would lower herself he bucked, slamming further into her. His thick 67

prick filled her, her intense orgasm stealing her breath away. Her moans filled the air and when he pushed her back on the bed and mounted her, the moans turned to screams. “Oh, I love how you feel,” she cried out. She felt wanted, his need urgent. “Tell me you love me, Libby.” He groaned. “Tell me.” “I love you,” she whispered. At her words, he moved faster, the friction a slow burn. He began to shake and when he came, he shuddered and collapsed on top of her and chuckled. “I guess now is the wrong time to ask you about birth control.” “You idiot,” she teased. He slid off her, his leg over her hips, his head on the pillow next to hers. “You know, I want kids.” “I do, too. But not tonight.” He smiled, his eyes flashing in the pale light that filtered in from the hallway. “No worries then?” “IUD.” She grinned. “No worries.”

Chapter 9 Libby pushed the broom up and down the aisles of the grocery store, humming to herself. “You sure are happy today,” she heard Jimmy say from behind her. “I am.” She smiled as she pushed the dirt into a dustpan. “What next, boss?” “I’ll need you to mop the floor but first, I want you to come in the back with me. I have something to show you.” She turned to look at him, his bristly face pale. “What’s the matter, Jimmy?” “Nothing. I just got off the phone with Keith.” Her heart leaped at the mention of his name. “He want to talk to me?” “I’m sure he did but he asked me to do him a favor and that’s what I aim to do.” Libby followed him through the double metal doors and into the little office. “Come in here.” He pulled open the top desk drawer. “I understand you have ex-boyfriend problems.” “Yes but…” “Well, Keith, not Officer Davidson, is worrying over you.” He lifted a pistol from the drawer. “This thing is always loaded.” 69

Libby backed away. “I don’t want anything to do with that.” “Well, Keith thinks you need to know where it is in case that Dwayne fellow comes in here and tries something.” “I’m supposed to shoot him with that thing? I don’t think so.” Jimmy stared at her from beneath his bushy brows. “The safety is on. Come over here and let me show you how to take it off.” She shook her head. “I don’t care. I don’t want to know.” “You’re being foolish, woman. If Susan knew how to handle one of these things maybe…” “What?” Libby asked. “Why won’t anyone tell me what happened to her?” Jimmy plopped down in his chair. “She got killed during a robbery.” Libby set her hand on her chest. “How terrible. Here in White Springs?” “No, Nashville.” “That’s sad.” “Yeah. Keith blames himself. She was working in that convenience store to help put him through school. He was planning on being a lawyer.” “Did they catch who did it?” “Yeah, but that’s little comfort for those left behind.” Jimmy set the gun on the desktop and pointed to it. “Keith can’t lose you and he’s worried. Let me show you how this damn thing works to ease his mind.” “All right, but I can’t use it. I’m not capable.” Jimmy chuckled. “You’d be surprised what you’re capable of under the right circumstances.” 70

**** Sitting on the front porch, Libby sipped her sweet tea and watched as Keith worked under the hood of her GTO. He wiped his hand across his chest, smearing his shirt with grease. His pec flexed and a grin touched her lips; he was her man and he loved her. A gentle breeze swept across her cheek and for the first time in her life, she knew contentment. “Hey, baby, come over here and start her up for me, would you?” With a quick step, she made her way to the car and planted a kiss on his grimy cheek before sliding behind the wheel. “Tell me when.” He signaled her with a point of his finger and the car started up on the first crank. “Wow!” she shouted over the roar of the motor. “I didn’t know she could do that.” Her words still hung in the air when the engine sputtered off and black smoke billowed out from under the hood. Keith stepped back coughing and waving the smoke away from his face with his hand. “I don’t know how you got this far in this car. It needs a lot of work. The carburetor is fucked up, everything is coated in filth, your air filter is the dirtiest I’ve ever seen, and that’s just with my limited knowledge.” He walked around the back of the car and pointed to the rear window. “The stupid ass used Bondo to hold the glass in place.” Libby nodded and watched Keith’s tirade. It was comical how his arms flew in the air with his exasperation and how he shook his head like a bobblehead doll. She giggled at the mental picture. “What’s so funny?” he asked, his hands on his hips. 71
Speed Trap
“You.” “How so?” He cocked a questioning brow. She walked around the car, imitating his movements in a mock tirade of her own. He laughed and grabbed at her, smearing her face with his dirty hand. “Stop.” She giggled and pushed him away. “You’re disgusting.” The smirk slipped from his face. “Any man who treated this car the way Dwayne Parsons has should be knocked over the head with a club.” She looked at the GTO and then to Keith, waiting for him to come to her defense. He was grinning again. “You tease.” She smacked at him and he pulled her back into his embrace. “In all seriousness, if he lays so much as a finger on you again, I’ll see him in the ground.” His eyes were cold with the vow and his tone bore the deadly promise. **** Libby rolled over and reached for the ringing phone. Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the darkness that shrouded the bedroom. She couldn’t feel Keith’s presence and when she touched his side of the bed, the sheets were cold. Finding the receiver, she answered. “Hello?” “Libby. It’s Dwayne.” “Don’t call here anymore.” “Please don’t hang up.” She heard in his voice that he had been drinking. He’d probably had about five beers because after six he got nasty, before that he loved the world. “Sober up and go back to Arkansas.” 72

“But I miss you, honey. You know how much I love you.” “I don’t want to hear that.” She gripped the cotton sheet in her fist. “And I’m sure telephone harassment is a violation of your restraining order.” “You’re a cold-hearted bitch!” He yelled so loud that she had to hold the phone away from her ear. “I want to slice you up just like I did that fluffy little dog.” “It was you who hurt him. How could you?” “I wanted to see you. He bit me so I cut him.” “You’re an animal,” she said through gritted teeth. “You never complained when I fucked you like one. You would call my name out. ‘Oh, Dwayne, you feel gooooood’.” She slammed the receiver down and bit back her tears. He would not ruin this for her. He would not make her cry. Scrambling from the bed, she searched the house for Keith, calling his name with more and more urgency. “Where are you?” The digital clock on the microwave read five fifteen a.m. She rushed out the front door, her horror ebbing when she saw Keith jogging toward the house, the collar of his gray shirt dark with sweat. He raised his hand to wave. Stopping in the driveway, he began to stretch. She ran to his side, nervous perspiration clinging to her skin. “He called again.” “I’ll talk to Leon about getting the calls traced.” He rubbed her arm. “Don’t let him scare you.” “He admitted to me that he hurt Elvis.” Anger and distrust twisted in her gut. “You lied to me.” Keith looked down at his feet. “I shouldn’t have told you it was barbed wire but you were determined to leave…” 73

“That makes it okay to lie?” She turned her back to him and started for the house. “No, it doesn’t. Don’t walk away from me. Let’s have this out.” She shook her head and kept walking. “Woman, you run away from everything. Stand your ground and fight for what you believe.” His voice wasn’t angry, more like a father chiding a child. His condescension further fueled her rage and she spun around on her heel. “Don’t talk down to me. I’m not a baby.” “No, you’re not. But you behave like one sometimes.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “I act like a baby. You lie to me and then insult me. Fuck you.” His face registered surprise followed by a smirk. Rushing him, she pushed at his chest. “Don’t mock me. That’s not right. You lied and now you’re trying to make me feel foolish.” He grabbed her by the wrists. “No, I’m not, but it’s good to see you have some fight left in you.” She twisted free. “Let me alone. When you can apologize for lying to me, we’ll talk, until then piss off.” Storming back into the house, she noticed he followed close behind. “When I get out of the shower are you going to be packing your bag?” he asked. She stopped and looked up at him, tears filling her eyes. “Should I be?” “Damn it, Libby,” he said through gritted teeth. “No you shouldn’t. You love me?” “Yes.” “You have every right to be pissed. But you need to get this, I love you. Stay. Fight with me, be angry, and be scared, 74

be whatever you are, but stay with me. I want you beside me but I can’t keep worrying that you’re going to leave me when things aren’t perfect.” He grabbed her hand. “This will work between us if we let it.” Kissing her fingers, he smiled. “I’m afraid something bad will happen too, but being with you is worth the worry.” She offered a weak smile. “Don’t lie to me anymore.” “I’m sorry. I won’t. I promise.”

Chapter 10 Keith pulled the squad car to a stop in front of the grocery. Libby felt his stare as she dug through her purse for a stick of gum. He stilled her hand with his touch and she looked at him expectantly. “You stay with Jimmy today, you hear?” “I’ll be here all day.” She sported a false grin, dreading the eight hours of boredom. “Even at lunch. Don’t go gallivanting all over town. The way Dwayne is after you I’m going to see what I can do about getting a warrant for his arrest.” “How will you do that?” she asked. “We don’t have proof he called.” “I bagged Elvis’s collar, sweetheart. If his prints are on the name tag; even a partial on the buckle, I reckon we have grounds.” He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll swing by here to pick you up this evening. And I’ll call you when I know something.” “Okay.” She rubbed his arm with affection. “When will we be able to pick Elvis up?” “Tomorrow. Doc says he has an infection and if it clears up we should be able to bring him home.” Keith blew out his breath. “I’ve got a couple weeks vacation due me. I’m going 76

to take it starting tomorrow. I don’t like leaving you vulnerable.” “I’ll be fine,” she remarked, attempting to sound unconcerned, despite the knot in her throat. “Like you said, Dwayne’s a bully.” “Yeah, he is. He won’t mess with me or Jimmy but you are his favorite target.” **** “Payday,” Madge grinned. “What you going to with all that money?” Libby looked at the check. “I don’t know, two hundred dollars, wow.” “You get ten percent off your grocery purchases too, plus we do offer insurance after three months.” She realized that seven dollars an hour was above minimum wage but it wasn’t going to be enough money to pay her way. “Thanks, Madge.” She tucked the check in the pocket of her smock. “I’ll go to the bank after work.” “You think you’ll be here in three months?” Libby stuck her hands in her pockets and eyed Madge. “I hope to be.” “You’re expecting Keith to take care of you?” “Madge, I’ve got work to do and you have a customer waiting to be checked out.” Madge sucked her teeth and turned her head. “You know Susan was my niece.” “No, I didn’t know. I’m sorry for what happened to her.” “Are you?” “Of course.” 77

Madge rushed off and Libby watched her go. No, working here is definitely a temporary fix. **** Libby checked out customers and bagged groceries for an hour. It was the first time Madge had allowed her to do this particular job and she liked it. The majority of the patrons at Harvey’s Grocery seemed warm and welcoming. The occasional sourpuss would stroll through and Libby speculated that they were members of Madge’s circle of friends. After lunch, the store emptied. Madge stood by the register, straightening the impulse racks and setting out the newest gossip magazines. She chuckled from time to time over the headlines. Libby glanced her way as she stocked the canned vegetable aisle and saw her reading about an alien baby being born in Seattle. The photo, obviously enhanced, displayed a gray narrow-faced alien with a 1950’s pompadour hairstyle. Below that picture was the headline “Big Foot’s Human Lover Speaks for the First Time!” Libby stifled a giggle as she recalled the old adage—Big feet, big pecker. Madge looked over the top of her paper. “Go see what Jimmy wants you to do next. Have you cleaned the restroom today?” Libby cringed. She hated cleaning the restroom, especially after Jimmy had been in there. The man could make a skunk blush. Moving through the double metal doors, she went to the office. She saw Jimmy sitting behind the desk, his head against the wall. “Jimmy?” she asked and moved to his side. “Jimmy, you okay?” 78

He didn’t answer. His skin was pallid and coated with sweat, his mouth open wide as he gasped for air. She tapped his cheek. “Jimmy? Oh my God, wake up.” He didn’t move. She grabbed the telephone and dialed 911. After explaining the situation, she ran to the front and told Madge. “I called an ambulance. Jimmy’s sick and I can’t get him to wake up.” Madge’s wrinkled face registered her surprise and the pair rushed back, Madge grabbing her son by the hand and sobbing. Libby tried to comfort her with a gentle touch but Madge glared at her. “You go out there and wait for the ambulance. Don’t let anyone else in the store. Go, girl, now.” **** Libby leaned against the building and watched as cars drove past. Closing her eyes, she set her face toward the sun. The spring was disappearing, leaving in its wake the sticky heat of summer. Nervous and agitated, Libby tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and blew at her bangs through the corner of her mouth. Pacing the cracked and narrow sidewalk, she wanted nothing more than to see Keith and decided to call him. She set her hand on the rectangular door handle and looked at her reflection in the glass. Hair a mess, clothes coated in dust and perspiration, she looked more like a junkie than a grocery store clerk. Her hand dropped to her side as a movement from behind caught her attention. Turning, she came face to face with Dwayne. “You’d better get away from me,” she warned. “You’re in violation of….” 79

“Shut up,” he hissed and grabbed her wrist, dragging her around the corner of the building and into the alley between the grocery and the now vacant, Wee Are Special Daycare Center. She tried to scream but he silenced her by clamping his hand over her mouth. She fought him, scratching at his face, kicking at him. He slammed her hard against the brick wall of the daycare, the action knocking the breath from her lungs. “Your boyfriend tried to have me arrested this morning.” She made no effort to speak, staring at him through dazed eyes. How had she have ever cared for him? When she lost her grandmother, she clung to him despite her granny’s warnings. But he was familiar and that comforted her. Looking at him now, he was a stranger. “You know what? He ain’t as smart as he seems. He knew I cut his dog, so why did he let his bitch roam free?” Cold eyes scanned her face and he pressed his body against hers. “How about a fuck for old time’s sake?” Her thoughts began to clear and once again, she tried to grate at his skin with her fingernails. When her knee made contact with his genitals, he crumpled and fell, his body in a tight ball on the ground. Stepping over him, she could almost taste freedom but he halted her and grabbed her ankle. She toppled over, her knees and elbows screaming in protest as jagged stones sliced and bit at her skin. “Let me go!” she shouted. “Let me go!” “I ain’t letting you go, ever. You belong to me. Remember you said you’d always be mine?” “No!” she yelled and wriggled free. Running into the store, she made her way to the back to find Madge dabbing Jimmy’s face with a wet cloth. 80

“I thought I told you…” “The gun,” Libby panted, trying to get the drawer open without knocking Jimmy from his chair. “I need the gun.” Madge’s eyes grew wide with shock. “Why, what for?” “Dwayne,” she answered, breathless. With Jimmy’s huge body blocking her way she was unable to get the drawer open. She tried to pull the desk back but the heavy metal refused to cooperate. “We have to move him or he’ll kill me.” Madge pushed and Libby pulled but Jimmy’s three hundred pound frame was immovable. She heard Dwayne’s footfalls as he wandered around the store. “Oh, Libby…come out, come out wherever you are.” “He’s drunk,” Madge whispered. “What have you done to my business?” “Stay here and call the police,” she returned, her voice low. Madge nodded and picked up the phone. Libby locked the office door behind her and tiptoed through the stock room, prepared if necessary to lure him away from Madge and Jimmy. Hiding behind a box of paper towels, she watched Dwayne as he shook bags and boxes trying to flush her from her hiding place. Her heart pounded in her ears and she thought she might faint when he pulled a pistol from his pocket. “Libby, I want to talk to you. Make you see how much I love you.” She bit back the terror. When he approached the office door, she made a break for the double doors. Hope filled her as she hit the metal with her palms and dashed for the storefront. Dwayne followed close behind her shouting her name. 81

She had almost made it to the front door when she heard the sickening pop of the pistol. She stopped. “Libby, I have a gun. I’ll kill you. You know I will.” Seeing Keith’s patrol car in the parking lot, lights flashing, she raised her hands and faced Dwayne. “The police are here.” Dwayne leveled the pistol, aiming at her. “Why the fuck didn’t you stay home?” he asked. “We’d have made up and things would be back to normal.” She swallowed hard. “Dwayne, I’m sorry.” “You should be. You done messed up my life.” Staring into his liquid brown eyes, she tried to appear concerned. “What can I do to fix it?” “It’s too late. “No.” She shook her head. “You haven’t done any real harm. I’ll drop the restraining order and I’ll go home with you. Put the gun down.” Just then, Leon’s amplified voice interrupted their discussion. “Mr. Parsons, we need to talk to you.” “See, they know I’m here. I’m screwed,” Dwayne stated, as much to himself as to Libby. “We need to know that everyone’s all right,” Leon said. “Officer Graham is going to approach the building.” Dwayne became more agitated, rising and falling on the balls of his sneakered feet, running his free hand through his dirty hair over and over. His gun hand shaking, but the weapon still pointed at Libby. “Officer Graham is bringing you a cell phone. She’s not entering the building. I repeat she will not come in. She is unarmed.” 82

Libby craned her neck and saw Annie coming toward the building, crouched low, a black helmet covering her red hair. She pushed open the door a crack and slid the phone across the floor. She didn’t say anything and finishing the task, she disappeared behind the brick support under the front window. “Damn it,” Dwayne swore. “This is bad, really bad.” “Let me go and talk to them. I’ll tell them whatever you want me to,” Libby pleaded. He took a menacing step forward and she saw the hatred in his expression, his down-turned mouth, and narrowed eyes. He cocked the trigger. “I reckon I’ll be seeing you in heaven.” She turned to run and the gun popped again, this time the bullet finding its mark. The force of the blast knocked her to the floor. Looking at her right shoulder, she saw the black hole in her smock turn to red. Strange, shouldn’t it hurt? Looking toward Dwayne, she recognized the shock in his eyes. “Libby.” He fell to his knees and pulled her to him. “I didn’t mean it.” “Dwayne, go get me some help.” Her ears rang from the percussion and her head felt fuzzy, her hands and feet cold and her fingers tingling. “I can’t do that. They’ll kill me for sure.” He stood and pulled her to her feet. “Dwayne, what’s going on in there?” Leon asked over the megaphone, the cell phone chirping incessantly. His arm around her waist, Dwayne dragged Libby behind the cash register. He set her down in the narrow space. “You stay put. I’m getting that fuckin’ phone.” 83

On his belly, he slid across the battered linoleum floor, the gun still in his hand. “Stop right there.” Libby heard Keith’s voice. “Police.” Grabbing the cash register, she pulled herself up. Dwayne rolled over, pointed the gun at Keith, and fired. “Keith!” Libby shrieked. On impact Keith stumbled back and steading himself, returned gunfire. Dwayne’s arm fell, the gun skittering across the floor, a pool of blood flowing from an ugly wound in his chest. He turned his head, his gaze on Libby’s face before he stilled, his eyes going blank. Keith held his side and retrieved the gun before coming to Libby. “You all right, sweetheart?” His face paled and he touched her shoulder. “Oh no, baby, no.” “I’m okay,” she whispered and leaned into him. “Are you?” “Yeah,” he said, breathless. “Bullet-proof vest.” Keith wrapped his arms around her. “I should never have let you out of my sight. I’m sorry.” “It’s not your fault. How did you get in here anyway?” “Madge, she let me in through the delivery door.” Keith held her close as he lifted his walkie-talkie to his mouth. “Suspect down. All clear. Libby’s hurt and Jimmy’s in a bad way. Send paramedics in now!” **** Libby woke with a start. The bright fluorescent light was painful to her tired eyes. Her head ached and her thoughts seemed wrapped in cotton batting. Opening her mouth to speak, she noticed her parched tongue felt heavy. A relentless beeping sounded above her head. She lifted her hand to rub her itchy nose and found her arm attached to 84

an IV. Memories flooded through her gauzy mind and she coughed, her shoulder protesting with the effort. “You’re awake.” She recognized Keith’s voice and tried to raise her head. “No, no, you be still,” he urged as he came to her side and took her hand in his, smoothing her knuckles with his thumb. “Dwayne?” “He’s dead, remember?” She nodded, her breathing labored. “Jimmy?” “ICU, heart attack. With luck and hard work, he’ll be all right.” He leaned forward and kissed her lips, his silver eyes rimmed in tears. “You’re going to be all right too, sweetheart. Bullet when right through but you had some muscle damage.” “I need a drink of water.” Keith brought a gold plastic cup with a straw up to her lips. “Little sips,” he instructed. “Once you’re completely awake, Leon wants to talk to you about what happened.” She swallowed, savoring the feel of the cool water as it ran down her throat. “When will I be able to go home?” “Tomorrow.” He set the cup down and rested his head on the pillow next to hers. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you. I should have been faster. I know what can happen.” A tear rolled down his cheek and he sniffled. “You did fine.” She grinned. “I saw the look on your face when you found me.” He kissed her cheek. “It was like losing Susan all over again.” She bit her dry, cracked lip. “I know. Jimmy told me what happened. But I’m alive. I’m right here and will be as long as you’ll have me.” 85

“You sure of that?” “Yes,” she whispered. “Good, ’cause that could be a mighty long time.” Raising her left hand, she touched his cheek. “I’m counting on that.” He sat up. “That being the case, there’s something I wanted to discuss with you before all this happened.” She watched as he pulled a small velvet box from his shirt pocket. “Will you marry me?” “Yes,” she answered, a sob escaping her lips. Keith placed the ring on her finger. “I love you, sweetheart.” Tears rolled down her cheeks and despite the pain in her shoulder and the fog that shrouded her mind, genuine happiness filled her soul. “Oh, Keith, I love you, too.”
