Animals in danger Is time r u n n i n g out for the fastest animal on Earth? In 1900, there were over 100,000 cheetahs in Africa, but in the year 2000, there w e r e only 15,000. Cheetahs are now in danger because they are losing their habitat. They are extinct in at least sixteen countries of Africa.
The cheetah The cheetah is a member of the 'Big Five' cat family. (The other four are the lion, tiger, jaguar and leopard.) It is the fastest animal on Earth and can run at over 100 kilometres per hour. It lives in grasslands and forests in Africa and Asia. The cheetah has brown fur with black spots and a white stomach. Of all the big cats it has the longest legs, the smallest head and the thinnest body. The word 'cheetah' comes from the Hindu word 'chita' meaning 'spotted one'. Cheetahs usually eat smaller animals like gazelles, small antelope and mice, but they sometimes attack larger animals like zebras.

When you're learning (or when it's cold and raining!) you can do it at your local sports centre. Millie was on holiday with her American cousin in the USA. Her Aunt Cassie, Uncle Mike and cousin Owen lived on a small island called Rock Island. Millie loved being on the island. It was great for swimming and diving. There was another house on the island. It was Dr Holstein's house. It was called Tower House.
It was time for bed. Millie went up to her room. Then she saw something strange from her window. She ran to Owen's room. 'Owen! Wake up! Come and look!' There was a line of small lights. It came from the sea up to Tower House. 'How weird! Let's go and look,' said Owen. They went down to the beach, hid behind some trees and watched.
There were four men. They had cages with animals in them, an Arctic fox, a cheetah, a baby white tiger and a wolf. 'What are the men doing with the animals?' asked Millie. T don't know,' said Owen, 'but they're all endangered animals!'
Very quietly Millie and Owen followed the men. The men took the cages down into a cellar in Dr Holstein's house. Suddenly Owen stepped on a branch. 'Crack!' 'Watch out. They heard us!' Owen and Millie started running. Millie fell but Owen didn't see her. 'Take the girl and put her in the cellar!' said one of the men.
Five minutes later Owen went back to Tower House. Through an open window he heard the men. 'OK. I want the fox for my zoo. How much is it?' 'The fox is $500 and the wolf is $1000.'

From Captain James Sinclair on the ship Princess Alice in the Caribbean Sea
Today we arrived at Tortola. The island is twelve mites long and five miles wide. We anchored south of the island. Then we went by rowing 6oat to Secret Harbour. We didn't see the pirate Ben Crow. We looked for him but we didn't find him. On the other side of the island there is a village called Kingston You can't see it from the harbour. The village is near a big caveIt is called Emerald Cave because it was art emerald mine.
Come on, Wild Wind! Faster!' Francois rode the black horse, Wild Wind, along the beach. The sea was emerald green and blue. Francois stopped the horse near his younger sister, Sophie. They were on the west coast of the island. Their village, Kingston, was five miles away on the east coast. Can I ride Wild Wind now?' Sophie asked. Yes, of course,' said Francois. But ride carefully.' He got off the beautiful black horse and Sophie got on Francois, look! A ship is coming to the island. It's got a red crow on its sail.' A red crow!' said Francois. 'That's Ben Crow's pirate ship. He and his men are dangerous. We must go back to the village and tell people.' But we haven't got time!' said Sophie. Yes, we have. We've got Wild Wind! He's faster than the wind, but we must hurry.' Francois jumped quickly on to the horse with Sophie behind him. He shouted to the horse: Run, Wild Wind!'
