Chapter One

The first thing she became aware of was the pain in her head, and she tried to reach up to rub her temples. With the realisation that she couldn’t move, she grunted and forced her eyes open. The lids fluttered as the sun’s bright rays intensified the headache. Needing to know where she lay, her gaze moved about her surroundings. Nothing seemed familiar. She grunted again as pain stabbed her tailbone and she shifted slightly to the side, relieved she could move at all. Feeling slowly returned to her limbs, and she bit her lip to keep from crying out. Painful tingles spread throughout her body, as if a giant weight had been pressed on top of her, then been removed. Blood as well as feeling returned to her extremities, and it hurt. She bit down harder and tasted blood. The sting in her lip paled in comparison to the pain flooding her body, and tears filled her eyes. The gravel beneath her dug into tender flesh and she shifted again. “Damn it!” she muttered as the sting in her tailbone returned. Realising that something was wedged under her butt, she groped beneath her, cringing as the torment in her arm intensified. She searched the gravel with her fingers, looking for a large rock or stone. Her knuckles grazed her ass and her eyes widened in alarm and fear. Whatever had stabbed her tailbone was in her clothing…and it was moving. She leapt to her feet, ignoring the intense rush of pain. It flew up her spine and exploded behind her eyes but her fear kept her moving. The snake-like thing had wrapped itself around her left leg, and she reached into her jeans to grab it. Hoping it wasn’t poisonous, she quickly pulled it out and tried to throw it away from her…and was only partially successful. She curled her lip as she stared over her shoulder to see the thing whipping the air. It had attached itself to her backside and was poking out from the waistband of her jeans. “What the hell?” As feeling was fully restored to her body, a hard tug on the creature caused her to yelp in agony. breath as she explored where the snake was attached. When she felt dry skin and no sign of teeth or fangs, she deepened her exploration. She stroked and probed until she became certain that it wasn’t a snake…but a tail. “I have a tail.” It was supposed to be a question but came out as a statement instead. “How can I have a tail?” Humans didn’t have tails, and she was pretty sure she was human. It was then that she realised she had no idea who or what she was. The empty lot around her had obviously been vacant for years. Dust covered everything, as well as the broken-down car near the road. No sign revealed which road this was, or which town she currently stood in, and snow-topped mountains lined the horizon in the distance. More curious about her body than her surroundings, she ran her hands down her front and between her legs. Everything her fingers touched felt normal for a woman, but her mind couldn’t stray far from the extra appendage attached to her tailbone. A sudden breeze blew her long hair into her face, and she darted her hand up to grab a fistful. She stared at the blonde and red streaks in fascination, blinking a few times to make sure the red wasn’t blood. Grabbing another handful of hair revealed more of the diverse streaks. Had she actually done that to her own hair? Shuddering, she brushed the troublesome mane over her shoulders and crossed her arms over her chest. The breeze stopped as suddenly as it had started and her gaze travelled back to the abandoned car. It would be a waste of time trying to start the vehicle. Even if it did still have gas or an engine that worked, the lack of wheels wouldn’t take her far. She stared at the metal rims and briefly wondered how long ago they had been stripped bare. Though there might be something in the car to let her know where she was. The stench from inside nearly drove her back out, but she held her breath as she reached for the glove compartment. She grasped the rat by its tail and tossed it into the back seat before even being aware she should have screamed. She stared at its hasty departure in surprise before returning her attention to the compartment. She removed crumpled pieces of paper with her fingertips, and as she shook them out, rat droppings and dust scattered. The Nevada address didn’t mean anything to her, but the state’s name sparked something in her muddled memory. Her gaze returned to the city. “What you hiding in those tight jeans, honey?” The unexpected voice startled her, and pain shot through her skull as it rammed against the ceiling of the car. She winced and sucked air through her teeth and looked over her shoulder to see an unshaven male holding the open door behind her. His gaze brazenly went from her ass to her face, and he licked his weathered lips. As she wondered why he didn’t react to her tail, she realised it had stealthily wrapped itself around her waist, which her shirt hid. Worrying less about the thing around her waist and more about the stranger, she diverted her full attention to him. Instead of getting closer to the man, she pushed open the passenger door and leapt from the car. Clearly surprised by her quick response, he slammed the driver’s door and leaned against the side, resting his palms on the hood. He winked at her. “Sorry I scared you, darlin’. I just been walking for miles and thought you might have something to drink. There’s nothing around here, not even a vending machine.” “You didn’t scare me.” Her senses were tingling, going on full alert. Something wasn’t right about the man, but her head was still full of cotton. By the time she realised he wasn’t alone, it was too late. The pain from hitting the top of the car was nothing compared to the blunt force that hit the back of her head. She reached up to touch it, but collapsed to the ground in a heap. Half conscious, she was aware of being dragged by her arms through the dust and dirt. Rocks and splinters dug into her clothes and flesh, but the pain in her head overcame everything else. “Roll her over, Sid, I have to see her ass. Can’t wait to fuck it.” Rough fingers clutched her arm and flipped her over, banging her face into the floor. It was then that she realised they had pulled her into a small building, one that she hadn’t seen from the road. She turned her head to the side and tried to focus. Chapter Two

After closing the shanty door behind her, Sierra fought the temptation to lean against it. Instead, she pushed herself away and walked towards the road. Filling her lungs with fresh air, she choked on a sob, refusing to cry. If she’d had a gun, she might have killed them both, but she wasn’t a murderer. That much she did know. What she still didn’t know was how she had ended up in a Nevada desert. Wanting to be as far away from this place as she could get, Sierra began to run. She stumbled upon the nearby road and kept running until she thought her lungs might explode. Only then did she stop, resting her palms on her knees as she leant forward to catch her breath. She heard the car stop beside her but didn’t look up until she heard the voice, which flowed through her like warm honey on a hot biscuit. Her tail twitched and tightened around her small waist as her crotch went damp. Sierra’s eyes lifted to meet the man’s gaze, and she smiled at him. “You don’t expect me to open the door for you…do you?” His voice reverberated through her and she trembled under the hot sun. She turned away to hide her primitive response and opened the passenger door to slide onto the seat, using all her control to keep from throwing her arms around him. You finally grew up.” Her confusion turned to a glare as the man stared out of the windshield. “Just have to ditch this car, then we can go home.” At the mention of the car, she finally noticed it was the same one that had been abandoned by the side of the road. “This car didn’t have any wheels!” He chuckled but didn’t respond. “Who are you?” The question came out as a demand, and his head whipped towards her. “I’m your bodyguard, princess. Let’s save the rest of the questions until you’re home.” She opened her mouth to ask another question, but his finger on her lips silenced her. She moved her tongue towards it, but she managed to hold it off. What was it about this man that turned her on? He was her bodyguard? Where had he been when she was nearly raped? She briefly wondered if she should mention the attack to him, but decided against it. She approached but forced herself to stop just out of his reach. “I want some answers before I go anywhere else with you. Why do I know you, but can’t remember your name?” He sighed deeply before walking away from the road, leaving her with no choice but to follow, which she did slowly. By the time she caught up, he had built a fire in a small clearing. She watched him sit on a boulder before turning to catch her gaze. “My name is Dathu, and I have been your protector since you turned sixteen.” She sat on the sand at his feet and stared up at him. “Why do I need a protector, Dathu?” Saying his name made her smile. She wanted to say it again, but bit her tongue instead. Everything about him made her feel warm, and she knew it wasn’t the fire. He heated up her insides, and she wanted to know why. He shrugged his broad shoulders before throwing a few tumbleweeds onto the fire. “I wasn’t told why, but I owe your father so much that I couldn’t say no. Besides, it’s been an easy assignment…until now.” Sierra felt a surge of anger flow through her at his nonchalant attitude towards her. How could she only be a job to him? Then she remembered how he had hugged her in the car. He had obviously been worried about her, which said far more than his words did. “How old am I?” Pain flashed across his features but was gone in an instant. It was so fleeting that it could have been merely a shadow from the fire, but she knew she had seen it. “You just turned twenty-one.” Her thoughts returned to the automobile. “How did the car get new wheels out here?” Dathu glanced back the way they had come and stared at the setting sun. In the next instant he pounced on her, pulling her towards him and wrapping his arms around her. “The rest of your questions can wait until later. Look into my eyes, Sierra. Look nowhere else.” She followed his command as the world around them ignited in flames of various colours. Sierra wanted to glance away and see what was going on, but she didn’t dare divert her gaze from his gorgeous blue eyes. The breath was stolen from her lungs as he tightened his hold on her. When the world stopped moving, she was still enveloped in his strong arms. Sierra inhaled deeply, trying to memorise his musky but sweet scent, not wanting to ever move. “Are you all right?” At first she ignored his whispered question. Maybe, if she kept her eyes closed very tightly, she could convince herself it was all a dream. Then she could do what she wanted with him. She wondered if ‘protector’ was the same thing as ‘servant’. If that was what he was, then he would have to do what she asked. “Sierra?” His tone had an anxious edge to it, and she growled low in her throat. “Yes?” “You’re home.” She reluctantly opened her eyes and looked around the opulent bedroom. Silk, satin and lace as far as the eye could see. Sierra cringed at the gaudiness of all the pink, and Dathu burst out laughing. “I’ve tried telling your mother that you outgrew this room years ago, but she refuses to believe it.” Sierra pulled away from him and turned full circle. The huge bed was smothered in pink satin and covered with a brighter pink canopy. Dolls and pillows were propped against the headboard, and more dolls and stuffed animals lined the shelves on either side of the vast room. She narrowed her gaze, pursed her lips and shook her head. “This can’t be my room.” Out of nowhere, her tail unleashed itself from around her waist and lashed out at the nearest shelf, knocking half a dozen dolls to the floor. Sierra jumped back in surprise, watching them bounce on the plush, white carpet. She looked up with wide eyes and met Dathu’s amused expression. “I don’t care what you do with your dolls.” He held his hands up and took a step towards the door. Shaking her head, she glared at him. “How the hell did we get here?” He clenched his hard jaw and stared at her. “It was only my job to retrieve you, not to answer all your stupid questions.” Her mouth fell open in shock. She was hurt by his response. Though she knew he cared for her, she didn’t understand why he continued acting like she inconvenienced him. Not

wanting to let him know how his words affected her, she held up her chin and swallowed her feelings. “Then get the hell out of my room.” “As you wish, princess.” He backed to the door, then left without another word. She stared at the door for several moments before tears filled her eyes. Refusing to let him hear her upset, she bit down on her knuckles and threw herself onto her bed, burying her face in the pillows and dolls. She could only hope they muffled the sound of her sobbing.

**** Dathu leaned against the door and closed his eyes. The hurt on her beautiful face had nearly been his undoing, but he needed to remain detached. It was the only way either of them would be able to do their duty. He knew Sierra’s memory would return soon, and should have taken advantage of her forgetfulness while he could. They’d had such fun as she grew into a woman that he was taken by surprise when he realised she was no longer a girl. His job would end as soon as she was promised to another, and he knew that day was at hand. How could he hand her over, knowing that man could never love her as much as he did? It tore at his very soul. But he would have no choice. He was only her protector, and as such would have to relinquish her when demanded. Hearing her sobbing through the door hurt his heart. He had to fight the urge to open the door and comfort her. That is what he had done for five years, since her parents were seldom there to do so. Dathu had been like a brother to Sierra, although since she’d come of age his love for her transcended such familial bonds. But he could never reveal his true feelings. That could be disastrous for them both. He shoved away from the door and walked down the long corridor that emerged in the great room. Some cultures would call it a family room, but it was far larger than that, with glass walls, vaulted ceilings and skylights. It also had nothing to do with family. Dathu doubted Sierra and her parents ever spent any time in the room together. He stood at the glass wall that overlooked the Pacific Ocean and wished he could appreciate the view. He missed his home too much, though, a home that put this one to shame. He hadn’t seen his family in almost ten years, but he couldn’t say he regretted his time spent with Sierra. Though he did sometimes wish that Luna had chosen someone else to be his daughter’s bodyguard. It should have been a true eunuch, not a real man who would grow to appreciate www.total-e-bound.com

She had transported herself to another state, which meant her natural abilities were maturing within her. Once she had fully matured, she could jump whenever and wherever she wished. Her father would want her married as soon as possible, to secure an alliance with his neighbouring kingdom on Klenar, their home planet. He would want a strong match, one who could control his daughter. The idea of any man controlling Sierra was enough to make Dathu’s blood boil, especially since he knew the ideal candidate the king would choose. He curled his lip at the very thought of that man touching her silkysmooth skin. Dathu stared at the communicator on his wrist, knowing he needed to report his finding Sierra. He sighed deeply, wondering if her parents even cared about their precious daughter’s return. Was she even precious to them, or merely a means to an end? He had only met Luna’s wife once and knew she was not completely aware of how important her halfbreed daughter truly was. They all tried to hide how special Sierra was—especially her tail, since that was definitely alien. It wasn’t like any animal on Earth had or could ever dream of having. Sometimes it occurred to Dathu that he might have been named as her protector because he was a humanoid, like her mother—though Cass was an Earthling and had been born on Earth. Dathu hailed from a distant planet called Pricos, and its people were considered inferior to humans. But his race could easily pass for them, so they were used as spies. Many of the Pricoslings had been enslaved and used for that purpose, so it would be an understatement to say that they bore no love for Luna’s superior race, the Klenarians. Maybe that was why the king trusted him with his only daughter. He couldn’t help but feel offended, since he was just as masculine as other men…well, in most respects. Though he knew that a man of the same race as her father would be totally compatible with a fiery female like Sierra.

Painfully gritting his teeth, Dathu rolled his eyes towards the ceiling and moaned deep in his throat. He didn’t have a chance in hell, and he bloody well knew it. Sometimes he cursed the day Luna had saved his life.

**** Once she was spent, Sierra rolled over on her bed and stared up at the frilly canopy. She curled her lip as she stared at it, fighting the urge to jump up and rip it down. She must have forgotten a great many things, and this room was definitely at the bottom of that long list. She doubted she had set foot in it for many years. Either that, or she had been totally braindead. It was no wonder she had forced it out of her mind. She turned her head and looked around the pink room, cringing before she focused on the full-length mirror in the far corner. Sierra rolled off the bed and walked across the thick, plush carpet. Her toes sunk into its opulence as she stopped on the far side of the room. Once she stood in front of the mirror, she cocked her head to the side and studied her reflection. Her shirt and jeans definitely didn’t fit in with the room. After peeling them off and leaving them in a pile on the floor, she kicked out of her dirty sneakers. Sierra stared at her naked body as if she hadn’t seen it before. Her breasts were on the small side but still a handful. They were pert and firm, though, with sharp, pink nipples. She gently pinched them with her thumbs and forefingers, watching how the skin tightened around them. Except for the wild hair on her head, her body was totally hairless. Sierra had no idea how many days she spent in the dungeon. She would stare out of the portal to watch fish swimming through the nearby roots, and tap on the thick glass to see if they noticed. Dathu knew he had played a part in that betrayal, and he could only hope that Sierra would forgive him when she was able to think clearly again. He was just thankful she had called out, since he could hear that beacon from miles away. It would have taken him much longer to find her had it not been for that. Being raised on Earth hadn’t prepared her for the strange way the Klenarians reproduced. It had spared her from getting fat, with swollen ankles, but it would also keep her distant. She would never feel this child moving within her, never feel it kicking her ribs and making it difficult to walk. She pushed away from the protective enclosure and left medical. It would be months before she could see her baby, and who knew what state of affairs the planet would be in by then? Her father refused to discuss politics with her in the room, and it frustrated her to be left out of the loop. Dathu would be required to remain in the dungeon until everything was settled between the warring kingdoms. She hated being away from him, when every fibre of her being wanted to bury herself in his arms. A guard was required to be present whenever she visited, so she couldn’t even kiss or hug him. She would be able to pay Jared’s settlement, catch up with her payments, and still have some money left over to live off for a while. She couldn’t lose the house. It was the house she’d grown up in. Her parents had given it to her when they’d moved to Florida to retire. It was paid for, as her late father was quite a stickler about being indebted to the bank. When she and Jared had faced financial difficulty, Jared had forced her to take out a second mortgage. Luckily she’d refused. Still, the bank wanted to seize the house. She couldn’t let that happen. This job was the only way out of the sinkhole she was trapped in. The door opened and an older gentleman dressed in an impeccably neat black suit emerged. He appeared to be in his sixties, with a kind face and receding hairline. Slender as a knife. “Oh, dear. I’m afraid you’re mistaken, young miss. My name is Nigel Burford. I’m Mr Hauser’s butler.” “Oh.” He stepped aside and gave her a slight bow. “Do please come in. They got a butler. “Thank you.” Nigel’s gaze cut to her luggage. “Let me help you with that.” He snatched the heavy bag with the agility of a man half his age. The butler was stronger than he looked. “Thank you again.” “My pleasure. Please, follow me.” Dual grand staircases leading to the second floor greeted her sight. An enormous crystal chandelier hung between the staircases, illuminating a round, glass table that sported a huge vase filled with long-stemmed roses. A gold and caramel colour-theme splashed throughout the interiors, from the pristine marble floor to the padded wall-covering, shades, and draperies. Sam mouthed ‘whoa’. She had never been privileged to go inside a rich man’s house before. Nigel paused. “Your room is on the second floor, Ms Knight.” “Okay. Thank you.” That was the third time she’d thanked him in less than five minutes. Sam hoped Nigel wouldn’t think she was ditzy white trash with a limited vocabulary. She didn’t know what to chitchat about with somebody she’d just met. She wasn’t a social butterfly. Besides, butlers weren’t usually chatty, were they? They were serious, impassive, tight-assed people like the ones she had seen on TV. Sam followed Nigel. As soon as they reached the second floor, the butler led her to the left, into a long hallway. Her room was the third door. Her jaw dropped when she saw her accommodation. Tall ceilings. Arched windows. More cream-coloured marble dominating the floor and walls. Perched in the middle of the room was a four-poster bed with crisp, white linen bedding. The furniture in her room matched the mansion’s colour scheme. Light-grained woods carved in intricate details with gold inlay. Luxuriously upholstered sofa and benches. More antique knick-knacks graced the armoire and tables. Sam made a mental note not to touch anything. If she broke something in this place, she was sure as hell she wouldn’t be able to pay for it. www.total-e-bound.com

Nigel carefully put her bags at the foot of the bed. “Mr Hauser will be with you momentarily.” “Thank you, Mr Burford.” “Please, call me Nigel.” He bowed his head and silently withdrew from the room with the grace of a swan. The door was closed, leaving Sam free to gawk. She inspected the adjoining rooms, which turned out to be a bathroom and a walk-in closet. The bathroom was bigger than her home in Indiana and a thousand times nicer. It had a deep, claw-footed tub—its faucet glimmered as if it was made from solid gold. Sam poked around with the curiosity of a fickle cat. The walk-in closet was spacious and looked like one of the high-end designer boutique showrooms she’d seen in downtown Chicago. The walls were lined with empty shelves for shoes and rows of unused hangers. A vanity with threefold mirrors sat elegantly against one wall. The vanity top was carved from the same pristine marble that was the signature of this mansion, and the bench in front of it was upholstered in a rich, gold fleur-de-lis print fabric. “Do you find everything satisfactory?” A voice startled her from her gawking. Sam jumped. She swivelled at the closet door and blushed. A handsome man dressed in a black designer suit leaned against the doorframe. He was tall. Six-foot-nine or ten or something. He was athletically fit with a broad chest, powerful shoulders, slim waist, and long legs. His golden-coppery hair was cut very short, military style. The man seemed to be in his early thirties. His eyes were an unusual shade of amber and his smile was dazzling. “It’s amazing.” Sam quickly recovered and stuck out her hand. “Hello. I’m Samantha Knight.” The man shook her hand, but didn’t let her go. “I’m Adam Hauser. Nice to finally meet you.” Her heart skipped a beat. “Y-you’re Adam Hauser?” “In the flesh. Were you expecting somebody else?” Her cheeks flushed instantly. She hadn’t expected one of her employers to be this…young and stunning. Brown nosing wasn’t her forte. “Fat. Balding. Twice my age.” A gleam of amusement twinkled in his eyes. “Are you disappointed?” She cringed. Is he kidding me? “No, sir,” she answered in a small voice. His faint smile turned into a leer. Adam crooked a finger in her direction, motioning her to follow. “Have a seat. I want to you give you a quick rundown.” “Sir.” Her new boss walked to a wingback chair near the fireplace. The way he moved was sinuous and predatory. It reminded her of big cats in their natural habitat. Like lions that stalked their prey. Dominant and deadly. Adam settled in gracefully. He grabbed a folder from the side table and started to flip through the pages. The contracts Reyes had had her sign were longer than the Congress’ annual budget bills. Adam peered from the top of the folder. “Have a seat, Ms Knight.” Sam decided to sit in a chair next to him. The room had a small sitting area across from the bed. The chair was plush and comfy, making her want to sink in and take a snooze. She couldn’t do that. Sam straightened her posture, hoping she’d appear more sophisticated than she really was. His gaze cut to her. “We hired you here for nothing but to fulfil our pleasure. Do you understand the extent of your employment?” Sam gulped hard and nodded. “Please state yes or no.” “Yes, sir.” “That means you can’t refuse any request we have in mind.” “I understand, sir. Yes, sir.” “Do you?” Adam leaned forward.
