FACTS
Practical Tips A word about weather
Because of Munich's proximity to the Alps the weather can be unpredictable. Summer isn't always warm, winter isn't always cold and rain can happen any time. There is also an inter esting phenomenon known as '"Fahn'", a warm, dry wind out of Italy, blowing across the Alps and resulting in clear skies but also causing headaches and short tempers to weather-sensitive persons . If you are confused with metric system. here is a simple formula.
to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit: Double the Celsius and add 30
---, _........
(t his will get you pretty close) , e.g. 15"C x 2 = 30 + 30 '" 60"F. A wise German saying states that there is no bad weather, only being badly dressed for the weather. Have a great time in Munich!

Munich - a Shopper's Paradise At the age of 39 I did one of the craziest things in my life. I left my familiar surroundings with its favorable climate in northwestern United States and moved to Munich. My welcome was gray. gray skies along with the mood lowering non-descript brownish-blackish hues that clothe t he Landscape in late winter

in Munich I had found one great consolation: TH ESHOPPING. I had inadvertently happened upon a shopping paradise.
How did Munich earn such a reputation? The answer ties in the varied makeup of its shopping districts. There is the pedestrian zone with its many department stores. fabulously stocked with everything fromcomfortersto caviar. Close by you'Ufind apparel houses on luxury avenues that rival the likes of Fifth Avenue, Bond Street and Avenue Montaigne. There are countless, trendy boutiques. small souvenir shops. gift emporiums, antique and curio shops - all carrying a staggering array of goods and wares to suit every taste and budget. A nice surprise that will add bliss to your buying is that the sales tax is already included in the price tag (what you see is whatyou get!).

SHOPPING
Let's go shopping! Most shoppers make a beeline for the centralpedestrianized zone, known as "Fussgangerzone", in the old town centre (Kaufingerstresse, Neuheuser Strasse. Marienptatz). Fabulous shopping opportunities abound here. You can explore one big department store after another. stroll through branches of well-known chain stores for fashion and
shoesand between them discover souvenir shops. record stores perfum-
eriesandjewellers. Alternatively to the busy pedestrian zone, you can turn into Hsenmannstr. (across from St. Michael's
Church) and walk through some of the oldest parts of Munich along Altheimer Eck and Farbergraben with its many smaller shops,
before meandering back to Marienplatz. Turn north on Marienplatz 'Fun!Hote ' 5hopping mull
onto Weinstrasse, which will lead you to the chic, upscate Theatinerstrasse. You'll find yourself in delightful passages, arcades and courtyards with tasteful boutiques presenting heute couture. Top-notch shoe salons coexist side by side with book shops, jewellers, galleries and cafes. This ultra-chic shopping area continuesto the east as you take Perusastrasse which turns into glamorous Maximilianstras se, one of the cities finest shopping boulevards wherea number of world renowned designers present their creations. Even if youare not in the marketfor haute couture you'll find a stroll along the storefronts a rewa rding experience.
SHOPPING
Returning to Max-Joseph-Ptatz turn right down Residenzstrasse , which leads you to OdeonspLatz. Weary shoppers regain their strength at sidewelk cafes whilewatching Munich's kindred spirits strolling past with their colourful shoppingbags. fromOdeonsplatz continue down historic Brienner Strasse, which marks the northern border of this luxuriousshopping district. This street. studded with tastefully decorated shops leads you to MaximitianspLatz, another noteworthy area with a classicambience. By now you may have worked up an appetite. Head for the "vtktuettenmarkt" (Victuals Market), a Mecca for Epicureans, only a few steps south of Marienplatz. from Vi ktualienmarkt meander south onto the less crowded Sendlinger Strasse and its side street Hackenstrasse. There you'll find a wide range of shops offering antiques, furniture, home accessories, clocks, jewellery, leather goods and of course the ever present fashion and shoe boutiques. While on Sendlinger Strasse take note of one of Munichs surviving city gates, the Sendlinger Tor. Those with more flamboyant taste should not miss a visit to the funky shopping districts of Schwabing, Haidhausen, the GartnerpLatz and Gtockenbach area. Here the shops - and the customers - are quite obviously more unconventional. Charming shops with their cornucopia of unique, irresistible and sometimes "off the wall" gifts and memorabilia as well as trend-setting fashion, havea specialappeal to artist, students and in general to those with a more Bohemian flair, There are lively cafes and restaurants, which offer great opportunities for people watching. As we say in Germany, 'viel Spass!" (Have fun) withyourshopping experience in Munich!

Eating out in " Munich & beyond " ..Eating and Orinking keeps body and soul toqetber" - in Munich
peoplestill adhere to this old Bavarian saying . For well over 600 years the Bavarian capital wasthe seat of the Wittelsbach dukes, elector princes and kings. Sumpt uous meals were always served
at court, but the mid dle class Munich folk did not neglect their creature comforts either. What surprises t ravelers to Germany, and especially to Munich, is
the culinary diversity. Special mention shouldbe madeof the local Munich cooking. which despite its venerable age has maintained
its freshness. Munich cuisine is especially known for its traditional meatdishesas well as sumptuous desserts. Some favorite meat spedalties are griUed knuckle of pork or
veal, boiled beef with freshly grated horseradish. Munich Sauerbraten (marinated beef with a spicy flavor), as well as game such as haunchofvenisonor roast wild boar and, last but not Least, the popular roast pork with dumplings - all these are served in every good traditional restaurant in the Bavarian capital Speaking of dumplings one thing is certain: The king of the dumpLings is the bread dumpLing (Semmetkncdet), closely followed by the potato dumpling; both help youto get the gra'l)' to your mouth.

example a good helping of Obazda, This is a soft cheese, often mellow Camembert mixed with butter, mashed and flavored with onion, salt, pepper, paprika and caraway. Fresh Brezen, mammoth size pretzels, with coarse grains of salt on them, go welL with it. Hig hLy rated for the morning Brotzeit, as a second breakfast, so to speak, is the white sausage (WeiBwurst) , a Bavarian spedalty made of veal, ftavored with a Lot of fresh parsley, lemon peel and spices. It is served, hot and steaming, straight onto the table from the sausage cauldron. The whitesausage and howto eat it are subject to iron laws. It "should not have heard the clock strike twelve", is a rule from the time when electric cooling systems were unknown. Eating the white sausage in the proper way1S an art all its own: Some people simply suck the contents out from one end. The more refined. and yet the Bavarian. wayis to cut the sausage into two parts lengthwise and then to peel the skin off both halves. Try it with crisp Brezen, sweet mustard and a fresh wheat beer. Besides rustic Bavarian food there are several excellent German restaurants that offer fine German cuisine including lighter fare. Try for example Restaurant HaLali on Schcnfeldstrerse (from Odeonplatz 200 meters down l udwigstraBe and then right). Their lovingly preparedmeat. poultryand fish entrees are sure to delight even the most discriminating palate. Since26%ofMunich's citizens stemfrom foreign landsthereisa vast array of ethnic food restaurants for f!Very palate and pocket book.
Bavaria's streams and lakes provide fresh carp, catfish, brook trout, pike and perch. The favorite fish of the locals is the Steckerlfisch, a whitefish or mackerel, grilled on a spit. The best way to enjoyit is in a beer garden, washing it down with a freshLy filled liter mug (Mass) of beer. For a snackbetween mealsthere is the Bavarian " Brotzeit" . Whoever takes a closer look at the history of Bavaria and Munich will soon find out that the conservation of art and culture has always been given high priority here. 700 years of rule by the WitteLsbach family has given Munich its present-day importance as a center of European culture. King Ludwig I of Bavaria deserves special mention here. During the regency of this "Prince of the Muses", many ofthe sights of Munich were built. Before int roducing some of the lonqstanding art-and-culturalinstit utions, we would like to acquaint you with Munich's latest cultural experience - Schranenhalle around1855 the "Scbrar menhalle". the old grain trading building adjacent to the Viktualienmarkt.
