Chapter 1 Meredith Wesley Carter shuffled back and forth on his feet in front of Korona Casteel’s desk. The striking redhead was looking at him with sympathy in her eyes, and it was making him uncomfortable. This was his second meeting with the assistant administrator of Galactic Nuptials. He took a deep breath and pressed his hand against his belly in an attempt to stop the fluttering. “Miss Casteel, do you think I’m wasting my time?” Galactic Nuptials’ advertisements boasted they could find mates for anyone. “Meredith, I’ve explained to you that I can’t guarantee that we’ll find you a mate, but I can say that many of the species we deal with take males as mates. Some even prefer them.” She reached out and patted him on the arm. “It’s not out of the realm of possibility. You just have to be patient.” He sighed, his eyes closing for a moment, and then gave her a weak smile. “All right then. I’ll just wait to hear from you.” Not wanting to see the pity in her gaze, he turned and left the office. If he didn’t hurry he’d be late for his job at the coffee shop. It wasn’t much, but it was all he had in his life. He’d been on his own since the age of fifteen when his family tossed him out for being gay. All he’d ever wanted was someone to love. When he’d turned twenty-five last

month, he’d seen the Galactic Nuptials’ advertisement and decided to give them a try. Come on, Mer. Suck it up. Don’t be so negative. Give the woman a chance to find your Prince Charming. Snickering, he headed for the bus stop. **** Delsin strolled through the transport station on Kilara, exploring the fairly new facility. Concrete walls with steel railings and pillars made for an impressive structure. Wooden packing crates covered in labels were stacked haphazardly up and down the concourse while brightly colored signs indicating shops and taverns enticed travelers. Security guards circulated with handheld holo screens scanning everyone. Everything had gleaming surfaces with very little trash or dirt marring the area. Rotating yellow lights signaled cargo moving across the vast room. Delsin winced when a ship, idling before takeoff, drowned out the voices of the many people. With his enhanced hearing, he could still hear glasses clinking, coins changing hands and music playing. The stench of body odors was almost unbearable, the acrid smell of hot metal making the delicate skin of his nostrils burn. Delsin, and three of his pride mates, were charged with escorting and protecting five young cubs of the Chaarta Pride. Their leaders were at war with the Mkata Pride, and it was imperative to keep the young cubs safe. He watched baby Taima trying to walk in the heavier gravity and chuckled. Taima was the only son of Chayton, their pride alpha. Some day the little tyke would take his father’s place. Delsin stretched, rolling his shoulders after their long flight, feeling floor vibrations through his boots. His eyes widened when he spotted his old friend, Salanon. The man turned up in the strangest places, but had never admitted to being from any one world. Maybe he can suggest a safe place to take the cubs. Hurrying to catch his

friend, Delsin ducked to pass beneath a low overhang, brushing against a humanoid man in an attempt to avoid contact with a species that appeared distasteful to his eye. The huge alien was gray with a porous skin. His head craned up as he wandered through the crowds, apparently scanning the monitor displays. “Greetings, Salanon. Have you been well?” He’d learned not to ask anything about the man’s business. He seldom admitted to anything, and was almost always working some kind of angle. “Delsin, my friend. What are you doing here?” Delsin sighed. “I’m on a mission for my alpha.” “Ah, how are Chayton and his beautiful mate?” “They’re involved in a war right now.” “War with who?” “Linnaeus, our home world, supports two prides. Mkata, the rival pride, is making an effort to take over the planet. Chayton sent me, along with Etu and Hakan, to hide and protect the pride’s cubs. We have five small ones with us.” “Males or females?” “We have three males and two females.” “I know the leader of Mkata. Honaw can be ruthless, but only to outsiders. Why would he turn against his own kind?” “Honaw wanted to mate with Preyta, even though she wasn’t his fated mate. She chose Chayton instead, and he didn’t take it well. Rumor is he’s going to kill Chayton and take her for himself. He wants to raise Chayton’s cubs as his own.” “Sounds like he’s gone mad. Where are the females of your pride? Why aren’t they with their cubs?” “Chayton tried to send the females away into hiding, but they refused to leave. They wanted to stay and fight for their homes. It was one argument he couldn’t win.” “I know you’re not staying here. Kilara is a Federation agricultural planet.”

“We’re just waiting to be cleared to pass through the Kolladian wormhole. Truthfully, I’m not sure where we’re heading. We’ve got to find a safe, preferably nearly deserted planet to hide the cubs until the war is over. You wouldn’t happen to know of such a place, would you?” Salanon bent his head closer and lowered his voice. “Not far from here is a deserted world. It’s called Teekia. You could go there, but it can be dangerous. It has some interesting indigenous wildlife that could be a problem.” Delsin shook his head. “No, that’s not a good idea. Chayton would gut me if I let anything happen to the little dears.” Salanon threw back his head and laughed. “Sorry I couldn’t be of any help. I must go now, but if you need anything just get word to me and I’ll come and bring reinforcements.” Delsin reached out and clasped his arm. “Thank you, my friend. Stay safe.” He watched as Salanon made his way to the front entrance, his eyes widening when he recognized one of the pride’s trading partners. He jumped when a hand closed on his shoulder. “Is that Zintssar?” asked Etu. “Yes.” Delsin sighed and waved his hand at the Royal Prince of Arridia. “Who’s that with him?” Delsin shrugged and watched Zintssar make his way across the crowded room. When they drew near, he reached out and took Zintssar’s hand. “Greetings, friend. It’s good to see you.” Zintssar smiled and nodded at Etu. “It’s good to see both of you.” He motioned to the tall stranger behind him. “This is my friend, Andon.” His hand moved to Andon’s shoulder. “Andon, these are my friends Delsin and Etu from Linnaeus.” Delsin and his brother put forth their hands in greeting. He smiled when the stranger accepted their gesture. “Greetings, friends of Zin. Are you planning on settling here as well?” asked Andon.

“No, we’re not. Etu and I only stopped to refuel our ship, and we’re waiting for clearance to enter the wormhole. We travel with our pride mate and five small cubs from our home.” Delsin frowned and nodded toward the upstairs level. “Do you know those men?” Zintssar glanced up and then scowled. “No. They landed right before you did. They’re cyborgs from Dragna.” “Cyborgs!” Delsin glanced at the cubs and relaxed when he saw them playing with Hakan. “What are they doing here? I didn’t think the station allowed anyone to land that wasn’t part of the Federation.” Andon watched the robotic men. “I’ve heard they’re more machine than living tissue.” Zintssar stepped aside when an alien rushed through the crowd. “I heard they were having trouble with their ship. I can’t imagine the station turning down anyone sending out a distress call.” He turned to Andon. “You never did tell me how you knew to meet me here.” Andon laughed. “I’m not meeting you, fool. I’ve come to greet our new bride.” Zintssar’s eyes widened. “What? Congratulations, my friend. When did this happen?” “Thank you, but it hasn’t actually happened yet. I’ll be meeting her for the first time today.” Delsin growled softly. “I don’t understand. How can you say she’s your mate if you haven’t met her yet?” “We, well actually, I ordered her from Galactic Nuptials.” He pulled a small booklet from his pocket. “This is the catalog they put out. You can find one of their brides that look promising and set up a contract for a mating.” He flipped through the pages and then handed the book to Zintssar. “This is our mate.” He gave a little wink. “Maybe you can find a woman for you and your brothers.” Groaning, Zintssar grabbed the book. “Bite your tongue.” He glanced at the picture and then passed the catalog to Delsin. “She’s very beautiful, but I’m not ready to tie myself to a mate just yet.”
Meredith’s Pride
13
Delsin pursed his lips, his head tilting to the side. “Why would you take a mate from a book? Are there no suitable females on your planet?” Andon blushed. “It’s complicated. We don’t have enough females on our planet to go around to all the males. We form family clans that consist of two or more brothers to one woman. Unfortunately.” He glanced at the catalog in Delsin’s hand and smiled. “Or fortunately, we can look for mates off-world. Not all species are compatible with us for reproduction, and Galactic Nuptials will only pair us with mates that are compatible.” Zin glanced up when the garbled sound of an announcement echoed out over the room. “That’s the ship from Earth landing on pad six.” “Damn.” Andon ran his fingers through his hair. “Wait here, please. I want to introduce you.” He turned toward the doors of the station and hurried off, a smile brightening his face. “What are you doing here, Zintssar?” asked Etu. “I’m here to check out this planet. Arridia has been awarded one of the farms, and I wanted to get a feel for the place before we send anyone to live here. What are you guys doing here?” Delsin leafed through the pages of Galactic Nuptials’ catalog while Etu told Zintssar about their trip. He studied the picture of Andon’s mate. Caleigh Davis was a beautiful woman. Blonde hair, green eyes, practically any man’s ideal mate. He flipped through the pages and stopped when he came to a beautiful brunette. She had long, silky-looking brown hair and deep blue eyes. She’s perfect! Scanning down he found her name, Meredith Carter. He glanced up through his lashes. Etu and Zintssar were watching Andon and his woman make their way across the room. Quickly, he tore the page from the book, making sure he had the contact information, and stuffed it in his pocket.

“Friends, allow me to present Caleigh Davis, my mate.” Andon put his arm around the young woman’s shoulder, bouncing back and forth on his feet. Delsin studied Caleigh’s face. He blinked and then narrowed his eyes as a dull, red flush covered her cheeks. “Caleigh,” Andon said. “This is my friend, and future neighbor, Zintssar from Arridia. And this is Delsin and Etu from Linnaeus.” “Pleased to meet you, gentlemen.” She nodded, but did not reach out with her hand. Andon pulled her a little closer to his side. “I’m sorry, Zin, but the hour is getting late. I want to get Caleigh home before the afternoon rains come. I’m pleased to know we’ll be neighbors, my friend. When you and your brothers come back, you must visit our home and take dinner with us.” He bowed formally to Delsin and Etu. “It’s been a pleasure. If you’re ever on this planet again, please don’t hesitate to visit our home. You’ll be most welcome.” Before anyone could respond, the couple moved toward the exit. “Maybe I can help you out,” said Zintssar. “I have a home on Khera. It’s one of the moons orbiting Arridia. I own it privately so no one else will be there since I’m going to be living here for a while. I have a house there where you’d be comfortable.” “What about your father? Won’t he object to us being in your territory?” “I can notify Father and let him know I’ve given you permission to stay there indefinitely. You’ll be safe there with the cubs. Nothing gets past Arridian defenses.” Delsin looked at Etu. “What do you think?” Etu shrugged. “It sounds good. It’s not like we have a lot of choices, and it’s better than dragging the cubs all over the galaxy looking for somewhere safe.” “I agree.” Delsin turned and offered his hand to Zintssar. “We accept your gracious offer, and thank you, Zintssar. Go ahead and

notify your father. As soon as we receive clearance, we’ll head straight there.” “That should put you there in a few hours. Travel safely, and don’t hesitate to send word if you need my help.” Etu laid his hand on Delsin’s shoulder. “Hakan is waving. We’ve received our clearance. I’m going to help him get the cubs back on the ship.” “Thanks, brother.” Delsin looked at Zintssar. “Thanks again, friend. You don’t know how much this means to me. I’m sure Chayton will send his thanks as well.” “Go, Delsin. You don’t want to lose your clearance.” He nodded, and then hurried toward the stairs. I hope we don’t have to watch the cubs for long. Several hours later, Delsin made final preparations to land on Khera. He watched Hakan maneuver their small ship. “Is everything a go for landing?” Hakan nodded. “Yes, we’re going…” “Delsin!” Etu came bursting through the door. “Etu, you know you’re supposed to be buckled in with the cubs for landing.” Etu winced, his voice breaking, as tears streamed down his face. “We received a communiqué from Knoton.” “What’s wrong?” asked Delsin. Knoton had been instructed to stay behind and help protect the pride’s females when they refused to leave. “All is lost, Delsin. The war is over. The Mkata brought in help from another world. Knoton did not recognize their species. He said they quickly overtook the Chaarta and slaughtered everyone, including the females. Knoton was wounded but managed to escape when their attention turned to the women.” He choked back a sob. “Everyone is dead, brother. We’re all that’s left of our pride.”
16

Chapter 2 Delsin shook his head. “They killed Preyta? Why would Honaw kill her? I thought the whole reason for this war was his obsession with her.” “Knoton said she went feral when Chayton fell. She killed four of the enemy before they took her down.” Delsin blinked back tears and felt as if his heart was ripped from his chest. His fists clenched, and he held his breath as he fought not to let his beast take over. What will become of us? “How are we going to survive?” asked Hakan.” We have no way to increase our numbers until Jacy and Keme mature. We’ll have to remain in hiding indefinitely.” Delsin swallowed hard and brushed his hand across his eyes. “Did you tell Knoton where to find us?” Etu shook his head. “I didn’t want to tell him anything until I talked with you.” “Go back and send another message. Let him know we’re on Khera. Tell him to hurry here as fast as he can, but be especially cautious. We’re all that’s left, and we can’t afford to lose anyone else.” He took a deep breath and turned toward the front. “Notify Arridia of our arrival and give them the landing codes for Khera. Let them know we’re expecting one more craft to join us and give them Knoton’s identifying numbers.” Etu nodded and turned slowly toward the door. “Right away.” Delsin turned to Hakan. “Let’s get this bird on the ground.” A few minutes later he followed Hakan down the ramp and got his first look

at the forest moon orbiting Arridia. He studied the dense forest and turned when Etu cleared his throat. “What is it, brother?” “What are we going to do? We’ve got to find some mates. We’re not equipped to take care of these babies.” All five of the cubs were crying at this point. “None of us know what we’re doing, and the cubs are missing their parents.” Delsin thought for a moment and then pulled the page from his pocket he’d torn from Andon’s catalog. “We’re going to order us a mate.” He turned to Hakan. “Watch the cubs. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He turned to go back into the ship. Etu grabbed his arm. “Where are you going?” “I’m going to send a message to Galactic Nuptials and find out if this Meredith female is still available. If she is, I’m going to send Hakan to Earth to pick up our new mate.” “Our mate!” “Yes, brother. We’re going to do this together. We don’t have enough credits to get two mates so we’ll just have to share one. The main thing is to increase our pride with new blood.” “And you want to do that by mating a female from Earth.” “Unless you’ve got a better idea.” Etu grinned. “Okay, you’ve sold me. Just make sure she’s pretty.” “Is this pretty enough for you?” He held the picture up for Etu to see. “Goddess! What are you waiting for? Go send your message!” **** Meredith peeled off his clothes and studied his reflection in the bathroom mirror. Only a little over five and a half foot tall, his reflection didn’t exactly scream “masculine.” He was small for a man, with long brown hair he usually pulled up into a ponytail. He believed his best feature to be his blue eyes. More than one of his past lovers

had mentioned how mesmerizing they were. Meredith snorted, and turned on the water in the shower. He’d held out as long as he could, and then called Galactic Nuptials again this morning. His shoulders slumped as he thought about his conversation with Miss Casteel. She’d been kind, but firm, that he should put his application to the back of his mind and let her work on finding someone for him. She didn’t want him to get his hopes up. “Fat chance of that!” He climbed into the shower and let the warm water cascade over his head. He was miserable in both his private and his work life. He’d studied to be a teacher, but no school wanted to hire an openly gay man to teach preschool. Do they think I’m gonna molest kids right in the classroom? He’d had to settle for a job as an insurance clerk in a large firm. Even there he wasn’t safe from harassment. Over the years he’d been beaten up several times in gay bashings, had nasty pranks played on him, and pretty much been made to feel inferior. They’d kept him at such a low salary he’d been forced to find a second job in a small café. At least there he earned tips. “Why can’t I find a man that wants me just the way I am?” he whispered. He’d be tall, with broad shoulders, a hairy chest, and loads of muscles. The warm water splashed on Meredith’s skin, beading up and dripping down the middle of his chest to surround his erect cock in a cocoon of warmth. One of his hands rose to tweak his nipples, teasing them into tighter and tighter peaks. Closing his eyes, he let soap-slicked fingers explore down his body to cup and play with his heavy sac. Working his bottom lip between his teeth, he began stroking the firm column of flesh with his hand, swiping his thumb across the smooth tip. He let his nails scrape lightly over his scrotum, aching for the touch of someone else’s hand. Meredith cupped the soft sac, rolling it gently as it drew tight. Fervently, he pumped his cock, moaning when he came, ropes of pearly white cream shooting out and

disappearing with the running water. Gasping for breath, his knees buckled, and he sank slowly to the floor of the tub. “Fuck this.” He breathed heavily in and out. “I’ve gotta pull myself together.” Moving slowly, he quickly washed off and turned off the water. He’d just wrapped a large towel around his body when the phone rang. Grimacing, he traipsed through the house leaving wet footprints on the hardwood floor. “Hello?” “Meredith, this is Korona Casteel from Galactic Nuptials.” Meredith’s hand trembled where it tightened on the phone. “Uh, hello, Miss Casteel. What can I do for you?” Her laugh was musical. “It’s what I can do for you, dear boy. Can you come to the office this morning? I’ve got a client that you might be interested in.” He could feel his heartbeat slamming against his chest wall. “I’m sorry, but I can’t. I’m supposed to work at the coffee shop today, and I can’t afford to lose any more time this month.” “No worries, Meredith. I’ll just come to see you. Can you take a break for a few minutes if I come to the coffee shop?” “Sure, no problem at all.” “Okay, tell me where.” “I’m working at The Coffee Station. It’s on the corner of State and Galagos. Do you know where that is?” “Yes, I know exactly where it is. I’ll be there in about an hour if that’s okay.” “Sure, that’ll be great. I’ll see you then.” “Okay, Meredith. Bye for now.” Meredith hung up the phone and danced around his bedroom. “They found me somebody!” Quickly, he pulled on his clothes, grabbed his keys, and headed out the door. The Coffee Station was only ten blocks away, so he took off jogging. Meredith walked into the shop and studied the room. The thick whirr of the frothing machine drowned out the laughter and murmur

of voices of the people in the coffee shop. The wrought iron trendy chairs with padded seats were filled with people hunched over laptops and books. The air was heavy with the smell of sweet caramel and chocolate while muffins baked in the kitchen. It competed with the fresh-brewed coffee and acrid scent of espresso. He was a little early for his shift, so Meredith ordered himself an Italian café latte. The drink was his favorite. Made with espresso, a hint of chocolate, and steamed cow’s milk, it made for a wonderful pick-me-up. He took his warm mug and found an empty seat. Steam misted across his face as he blew on the frothy drink. Meredith let his gaze bounce from couples leaning toward each other at the chic bistro tables to the laughing groups of teenagers crowding the booths. His own table partner, an empty chair, had him saying a silent prayer that Miss Casteel had indeed found him a mate. He groaned at the first sip of the chocolate-drizzled whipped mocha and glanced up when the bell jangled over the door. He watched as Miss Casteel navigated the room, a wide smile on her face. She put out her hand. “Don’t get up.” She sank down into the chair closest to Meredith. “I won’t keep you in suspense, Meredith. We’ve had an inquiry regarding your availability as a mate, but there is a rush factor.” Meredith’s hand flew to his chest, splaying out over his breastbone. He struggled to speak. “You’ve found someone? Somebody really asked for me?” She reached over and squeezed his hand. “Yes, dear boy. We’ve had someone ask specifically for you. Actually, it’s two people.” She grinned. “The men are from the planet Linnaeus, although they’re living on a moon orbiting Arridia at this time. It’s only a temporary location for them, but they’re not sure where they’ll put down permanent roots yet. They’re lion shifters.” Meredith cleared his throat. “Um, what…I mean, that’s great. Why are there two men wanting a mate?”
Meredith’s Pride
21
“It’s not unusual for their species to form triad relationships. It’s my understanding there’s not many left in their pride so they’re willing to share. Is that a problem?” “No, no it’s not a problem.” He narrowed his eyes. “What’s the catch? Are they butt ugly?” Korona laughed. “No, they’re pretty hot even in their Federation identification pictures. They weren’t able to get to one of Galactic’s offices to have an official picture taken so this will have to do.” She handed him two small prints. Meredith studied the pictures and felt his heartbeat speed up. Their catlike eyes were mesmerizing. Not even the grainy pictures could take away from their masculine appeal. “I repeat, what’s the catch? This seems too good to be true.” “The catch is there’s a time crunch.” “What do you mean?” “They’re sending a representative to Earth to pick up their mate as soon as I tell them you’re available. They don’t have time to wait around. They need a mate as soon as possible.” Meredith frowned. “Why?” She shrugged. “I’m not sure what to tell you, Meredith. They explained their situation to Tarooka, and he approved them for a fast meeting. He told me that they had legitimate reasons for the rush.” “Who’s Tarooka?” “Tarooka Meekers owns Galactic Nuptials. He’d never steer any client into a situation that wasn’t safe. He’s always had an uncanny ability to match the right people together, although he doesn’t always explain his reasons for the matches he makes.” He studied the pictures again and felt his cock hardening inside his jeans. “How fast are we talking about?” “They’ve got their own shuttle and can be here ready to leave in forty-eight hours, if you’re willing.” Meredith licked his lips. “And you’re sure it’s me they want?”
22
Missy Martine
“Absolutely, Meredith. They forwarded your picture along with their application in their communiqué. They definitely asked for you specifically.” Meredith relaxed as laughter bubbled from his chest. He stood and pulled Korona from her chair, grabbing her up in a bear hug and swinging her around. “Thank you, thank you so much.” She held him tightly, patting him lightly on the back. “I’m happy for you, Meredith. You deserve something good in your life.” He felt elated. He’d never believed the day would come that someone would want him for a mate. I don’t care what happens. I’m going to be the best mate they could ever imagine. Korona struggled in his arms until he released her. “You’re going to need to organize to get ready to leave here in just two days.” “What do I need to do?” “You’re going to need a physical exam, and you’ll need to be fitted with a translator before you leave. Luckily, the exam won’t take long because they don’t have to worry about you being compatible to bear children.” “What?” She laughed. “Women have to be tested to see if they are able to reproduce with the men they’re mating, or if medical intervention is needed. In your case, he’ll merely do some blood work to make sure you’re not carrying any germs to another world. You’ll also need to pack, notify people that you’re leaving and give out our address for any messages that need forwarding. There’s a mountain of paperwork for you to sign before you can go off-world.” “Where do I go for this medical exam?” “You’ll need to go see Dr. Xavier Jtsar. He does the exams for all our clients. His office is in the same building as Galactic Nuptials. He’s on the fourth floor. Just get over there sometime this afternoon or early in the morning, and he’ll work you in. I’ll let him know you’re coming.” She picked up her purse and slung it over her shoulder. “Do you have any more questions?”
Meredith’s Pride
23
Meredith thought for a minute and couldn’t organize his thoughts. “None that I can think of right now, but I’m sure that’ll change.” “That’s okay, Meredith. Feel free to call me anytime if you want to know anything. I’m happy for you. And I’m pleased that we could help make your dreams come true.” She started toward the door. “I’m going to get the paperwork done today. Drop by my office after you see the doctor, and you can sign everything then.” “Bye, and thank you.” Meredith watched her leave, blinking back the tears in his eyes. “Oh, no, I forgot to ask about Midnight. Wonder if they’ll let me bring him. What could it hurt?

Chapter 3 Meredith paced anxiously back and forth outside the terminal doors of the Earth Transit station. Every once in a while he’d stop and study his reflection in the glass door. His fingers shook as he combed them through his unruly hair. He’d left it loose so he’d look more like his picture in the Galactic Nuptials’ catalog. “Meowwww!” He looked down at the pet taxi nestled against his luggage and sighed. Midnight was not happy confined in such a small space. Korona had briefly been speechless when he’d asked if he could bring his furry companion along for the trip. There were no rules against it, but she did warn him to keep a close watch on the small feline. Other worlds could hold dangers neither of them was aware of. He frowned at the tape seal across the small cage. They’d searched and scanned his bags, leaving a binding tape across each one to prevent him from opening them before he left Earth. Luckily, the cat’s carrier held its own water source. Sighing, he began pacing again, watching for anyone that looked like he might be a cat shifter. Meredith pulled out the black-and-white pictures of his mates-to-be and rubbed his thumb across the images. He’d received a report on the two men, and he’d nearly memorized it when he couldn’t bring himself to sleep. Their names were Delsin and Etu, and Delsin was the leader of his pride. Meredith chuckled softly. Does that make me his queen? A man walking through the concourse caught Meredith’s eye. He towered over everyone else, easily over six feet tall, with dark black hair. He had a feral look to his face with tiny, thin black whiskers. His

dark-green eyes kept darting to a paper he had clutched in his hand as he searched the crowd. When his gaze met Meredith’s, he stopped, consulted the picture, and then smiled, showing off his wicked, pointed teeth. **** Hakan moved forward and let his gaze wander down the human’s body. He gasped, taking a small step back when he spotted the bulge between his thighs that shouldn’t be there. Cautiously, he moved toward the small man. “Are you Meredith Carter?” Meredith smiled, holding out his hand. “Yes, that’s me. But everybody calls me Mer. It’s great to meet you.” Hakan stiffened, his eyes widening. Slowly, he reached out and shook the offered hand. “I’m Hakan of the Chaarta pride. I’ve been sent to escort you to your mates.” Mer bounced on his toes, smiling and giving Hakan a little wink. “I can’t tell you how happy I am you’re here. I’m all ready.” He stopped, and seemed to study Hakan’s face. “Is something wrong?” Hakan snapped his mouth shut and forced a smile. “No, I’m sure everything’s fine.” He pulled a picture out of his pocket and showed it to Meredith. “This is you, right?” He glanced at the photo and nodded. “Yep, that’s me.” Shrugging, Hakan gave him a genuine smile. “Then let’s be on our way.” He bent and lifted one of Mer’s bags only to jump back in alarm when it hissed. “What the hell?” He peered closer, narrowing his gaze on the tiny creature inside. “What is it?” Mer let out a cough that sounded suspiciously like a laugh. “It’s a cat, a pet actually. His name is Midnight.” The small cat watched him warily through the bars of his cage and hissed again, every hair on its back standing up. Hakan bared his teeth and growled, laughing when the ball of fur growled back, hissing even louder. “This is going to be so much fun.”

**** Mer watched Hakan duck under the low bulkhead as they boarded the small ship. He’d finished storing all the luggage and was preparing to leave the Earth station. A doorway with metal panels slid shut behind him, making a hissing noise as it sealed. Crossing his arms, he looked around in almost childlike wonder. He pointed to a large white container mounted to the wall next to the door. “What’s that?” Hakan sat down in the seat in front of a panel of controls and glanced up briefly. “It contains fire-dampening foam.” He nodded to the chair behind his. “You’ll be sitting there for takeoff and landing.” He pointed toward two other open doorways. “That’s the galley, and that leads to a small berth if you want to nap. That red button by your chair will open a porthole for viewing after we’re in space. It will automatically close during takeoffs and landings.” Mer walked over to a closed door. It had a keypad mounted on the front. “What’s in here?” “It’s a weapons locker. You have to have a security code to enter. We’re primarily a cargo ship, and the weapons are merely a precaution. We’re not making any stops between here and Khera, so it’s doubtful we’d have any need for them.” He turned back to the ship’s controls and then stopped and glanced back at Mer. “You need to stay in the designated walkway because there are steam vents in the ship that could harm you. Now I need you to strap in so we can take off.” “Do you think Midnight will be okay?” Hakan glanced down to where the cat’s carrier was strapped against the wall. “He should be fine. He won’t be happy with the turbulence taking off, but it shouldn’t hurt him.” Mer sat down and buckled the heavy straps around his shoulders. I don’t think they made these ships with small men in mind. There was

ample room for him to move around even after the locks fastened. He closed his eyes when he felt the deck plates vibrating. He could hear the engines humming and whining as they began to take off. The intercom broadcasted an automated warning just seconds before he felt a heavy weight settle on his chest. His head craned up as he was knocked back in his seat from the acceleration. “You okay, little human?” Hakan asked. “Just peachy keen.” Mer rubbed the back of his neck as he scanned the content on the monitors he could see. Before he could make sense of any of the readings, he jerked back as they accelerated out of the atmosphere, the blood rushing making his heart beat faster in his exhilaration. I’m finally on my way to meet my mates! **** “Come on, Mer. It’s time to wake up.” Mer blinked a few times and focused on the man leaning over his chair. “Come on, little human. We’re home. It’s time to meet your mates.” Letting out an undignified squeak, Mer struggled with the buckles on his shoulder straps. He could hear Midnight growling in the cage at his feet. “Calm down, boy. As soon as I find a safe place I’ll let you out.” “Let me help you.” Hakan pushed Mer’s hands away and deftly unfastened his harness. “Come on, Mer. It’s time for you to see your new home.” Mer stood up and stretched, ignoring the creaks of his tired bones. They’d been traveling for two days, and he ached from head to toe. Leaning down, he picked up Midnight’s taxi and followed Hakan out of the shuttle. Thick underbrush with brambles and thickets carpeted the area with the occasional berry bush breaking up the monotony.

Hakan growled. “We’re going to have to walk to the house. I tried to send a message, but I can’t get the signal to go through.” He grabbed up Mer’s suitcase and Midnight. “Just follow close to me and stay on the path.” Mer nodded and followed down the trail. Shifting patterns of light from the sun illuminated the broken branches of the trees, while small furry creatures leapt from branch to branch. The wind brought the scent of nearby water and the ripe smell of cedar. Smiling, he carefully traversed the uneven ground, briars scratching at the bottom of his jeans as they worked their way deeper into the forest. He could just make out the sound of water trickling and the smell of sweet flowers as they entered a clearing. The sunlight felt warm on his face when they broke out of the trees, the gentle breeze ruffling his clothes and swishing through his hair. A loud squawk had him jumping and looking around in alarm. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead, trickling down his face as he searched the shadows of the forest. Hakan laughed. “Not to worry, little human. I won’t let anything happen to the alpha’s mate.” Mer nodded and followed him farther into the woods. They passed a small stream, leaves and twigs floating in the swirling water. As he stopped to get a better look, a creature resembling a frog lifted briefly from the water, eyeing him curiously before dropping back down into the muck. Shuddering, he hurried to catch up with his guide. As they walked into another clearing, Mer spotted a house unlike anything he’d ever seen before. It looked like a tree house, only a lot more sophisticated, carefully camouflaged among the green flora. The walls were made from trees growing closely together. He frowned, listening carefully. The sounds of babies crying echoed out over the glade. “Delsin!” Hakan smiled at Mer and set Midnight’s carrier on the ground. “Come meet your mate.”

Mer’s breath caught when a man walked out onto the front porch. He had to be nearly seven feet tall, with shoulder-length silver-andgray hair that resembled a lion’s mane. God, he’s hot. He motioned them forward and then stepped back into the house. Mer winced, closing his eyes and squeezing them shut for a moment. Was he disappointed in how I look? Hakan picked up Midnight and patted Mer on the back. “Come on, little human. Let’s get you inside.” Mer frowned and gave a slow nod. He followed Hakan into the house, his heart sinking at his future mate’s reception. Just inside the door he stopped and looked around. Furnishings were sparse with only a few tables and a couple of couches. This is weird. I thought it would look more, I don’t know, alien. It looks like a house you might see in some of the sections of America. It was a pretty sterile environment with no pictures or personal items lying around. He looked toward the hall when the baby’s crying intensified. That sounds like more than one baby. Before he could ask Hakan about the crying, a loud voice boomed from an open door. “Hakan, get in here.” Grimacing, Hakan glanced at Mer. “Just make yourself comfortable. I’ll be back in a minute.” **** Delsin stood looking out the window. He’d been impatient for Hakan and the stranger to get into the house. The man looked like he could be his mate’s brother, but where was his mate? If Hakan has messed this up, I will skin him alive and stake his carcass out for the ants. “You bellowed, oh great one?” Hakan walked in and dropped into the chair in front of Delsin’s desk. “Is everything okay? Did Knoton get back safely?”

Delsin ignored his questions. “Where is my mate and why did you bring that boy?” Hakan’s brows drew together as he glanced toward the door, and then gave a slight shake of his head. “That’s the mate you sent for.” Delsin ground his teeth together. “No, it’s not. I sent you for Meredith Carter.” “Are you blind? That is Meredith Carter. But he prefers to be called Mer.” Delsin scoffed. “Meredith is not a man’s name.” Hakan rubbed the bridge of his nose with two fingers. “I was a little curious about that myself, so before I left Earth I sent a message to that Meekers fellow at Galactic. He assured me that Meredith can be feminine or male.” He stood up and pulled out Meredith’s picture and slammed it down on Delsin’s desk. “I matched up this picture with that man and brought back what you asked for. Goddess, it even says right under the picture he’s male.” “It does not.” Delsin grabbed up the photo and studied it closely. Near the bottom, right next to the tear, were the letters ale. He’d torn off the M when he’d stolen the picture from Andon’s book. Goddess, it’s my own damn fault. He glanced at Hakan and growled. “Didn’t you think it odd that I sent for a man when I wanted a mate?” “No, not really. I’ve had several friends that settled happily with male mates. They didn’t want to father cubs, so they didn’t care what others thought.” “Well, I’m not one of them and neither is Etu. We wanted a woman who could take care of the cubs, and keep our den in order. Hell, we want cubs of our own someday. You’ll just have to take him back and get someone else.” “I don’t think that’s such a good idea, Delsin.” “Why not?” “The paperwork they had me sign gives Meredith a ninety-day trial period or we have to pay a huge penalty.”
Meredith’s Pride

“I don’t care about the money. I need a female to take charge of the cubs. They’re proving to be more than any of us can handle. Just get the ship ready, and I’ll send a communiqué to Galactic Nuptials explaining about the mistake.” “Uh, Delsin. Why is it so quiet?” “What!” The babies had gone completely quiet. Swallowing his fear, Delsin raced down the hall and stopped in the doorway of the nursery, not believing his eyes. Three of the cubs were happily playing and crawling around the floor with Knoton while the other two were sleeping quietly on the bed with Meredith cuddling them. The human male was small with a creamy complexion. His darkbrown hair fell in waves past his shoulders, framing his bright cerulean eyes. Delsin stiffened when his beast woke inside, stretching his length, scenting the small human. His mouth dropped open when his lion whispered, Mine! **** Mer watched Hakan scurry away when Delsin called and sighed. I wonder where my other mate is. Maybe he’ll be more impressed with me than this asshole. The sound of babies crying vibrated along his spinal cord and not in a good way. The sounds seemed to be coming from a room at the end of the hall. Slowly he crept toward the door. The crying was sounding more and more like distress and not just hunger or anger. Pausing at the closed door, he pressed his ear against the wood and listened, jerking back when an earsplitting scream came from within. Throwing open the door, he rushed inside and stopped. There were three toddlers crawling on the floor and two babies lying on the bed surrounded by pillows while a very large man bounced the mattress up and down. Mer took a deep breath and gagged. “Phew! Somebody, or maybe everybody, needs their diaper changed.” He

quickly shut the door when one small tyke crawled swiftly toward freedom. “I recognize you from your picture. You’re the alpha’s mate.” “Yeah, that’s right. Who are you?” “I’m Knoton. Do you know anything about babies?” Mer sighed. “Enough to get by, I guess.” “Please help me. I can’t get them to be silent.” Mer snorted and glanced around. He spotted a stack of diapers on a table next to an open door. He investigated and found a bathroom with a generous supply of towels and washrags. Working quickly, he dampened several with warm water, grabbed a stack of towels and headed back to the battlefield. He deposited everything on the bed and bent closer for a better look. There was a squalling mess of royally pissed-off infant beneath the heavy blankets. Slowly he peeled the cover back, and the tiniest baby he’d ever seen opened her bright blue eyes. Mer felt his heart begin to melt. She was dressed entirely in pink, from the bow in her wispy brown hair to the soles of her miniature shoes. “What’s your name, little angel?” She began to make whimpering sounds. “That’s Keme,” said Knoton. He laid his hand over the other baby. “This big boy is Yuma.” Keme began rooting toward Mer’s hand. “When was the last time you had your diaper changed, princess?” He hauled her out of her pillow cocoon and felt the soggy heaviness. The baby felt warm to the touch. “Man, you’re barbecuing these kids. They don’t need this much cover. The baby had quieted when Mer picked her up, though her expression could only be described as disgruntled. A small tyke with curly blond hair tugged on Mer’s jeans. He laid the baby down and then bent and lifted the child and placed him on the bed. “What can I do for you?” “Potty!” His soulful blue eyes tugged at Mer’s heart. “Come on, Taima. I’ll take you.” Knoton stood and held out his hand. The small boy nodded, scrambling down from the bed using

Mer as a climbing frame. He quickly toddled off, holding Knoton’s hand. Mer jumped when a sticky little hand grabbed onto his arm. He looked down at the small boy leaning against his leg. “And who is this little charmer?” Knoton stuck his head out of the bathroom. “That’s Nodin, and the little blonde trying to open the door is Jacy.” Mer returned his attention to Keme and picked her up. Her little face was scrunched into a howling fury, red with tear streaks. The soft down of corn-silk-brown on top of her head was matted down from her tantrum. He laid her down on top of the blanket. “Ewww, Keme. How can such a small baby make such a big stink?” Pulling up her dress, he got his first view of her cloth diaper. “Man, you’d think people with the smarts to travel to other solar systems would have disposable diapers.” Carefully, he untied the strings at her waste and pulled the sodden mass down. “Oh, man.” He wrinkled his nose and looked away. “Girl, you did a major doody.” He removed the diaper, rolled it up, and proceeded to clean her bottom thoroughly with one of the damp washrags. Once she was clean he put on a clean diaper, carefully tying the straps at her hips. “You’re such a good girl, aren’t you?” he cooed. “Here.” Knoton placed an empty bucket beside the bed. “You can just put the soiled diapers here, and we’ll get them washed later.” Mer dropped the rolled up fabric into the bucket and wiped his hands on a towel. “Thanks, man. You might want to get some bottles ready for these two and think about feeding the terrible trio over there.” Taima, Jacy and Nodin were at the door trying to stretch up and reach the doorknob. Taima and Jacy had dark midnight-blue eyes while Nodin’s were lighter, brighter, almost the color of bluebonnets. “By the time you get them some food, I’ll have them all cleaned up with clean clothes.” Mer snickered when Knoton ran to do as he asked.

He made quick work of changing Yuma and then deposited the sponge that had been his diaper into the bucket. Several minutes later all five babies had clean diapers and were becoming restless. Keme’s wriggles and grunts turned into full rage. She and Yuma wept together as they waited for their lunch. “Here we go.” Knoton came in carrying two baby bottles and several bowls of what looked like gruel. He passed the bottles to Mer and then sat down on the floor with the bowls. The three small toddlers quickly gathered around him. Mer tested the bottle on the inside of his arm to make sure it wasn’t too warm. He turned Yuma onto his side and propped the bottle up on a pillow. The boy took the nipple with no prompting. Mer cradled Keme in his arm and placed the nipple against her small pink lips. She took it into her mouth with a latching gusto. He slumped back against the headboard and cradled her against his chest. She was still half crying, but he suspected she’d worn herself out because it wasn’t the ear-splitting screams anymore. She gummed the nipple halfheartedly, still whimpering and fussing a bit. He could feel her muscles relaxing as she hungrily sucked. Mer cradled a hand around her protectively when her little fingers curled around his thumb. “Taima!” Knoton picked Taima up and sat him down, wiping the gruel off his foot with a towel. “You’re supposed to eat it, not squish it between your toes.” Mer chuckled and raised Keme to his shoulder to pat firmly on her back. The little princess let out a belch that rivaled the guys that frequented the bar next door to the coffee shop. Her mouth went slack as she studied Mer’s face, and she gave him a genuine, honest-to-God smile complete with milk dribbling from between her toothless gums. “Look at you! You’re the smartest baby in the whole world. Just look at that smile.” Slowly her eyes began to close as she headed toward milk stupor. Carefully, he laid her down in the valley between the pillows.

“You’re really good with the cubs.” Knoton grabbed Jacy and stuck another spoonful of lunch between her open lips. Mer turned to Yuma and smiled. He wasn’t asleep. His blue eyes were open and seemed focused on Mer. He picked the chubby boy up and draped him over his corded forearm, rubbing up and down his back in a firm motion. After he burped, he continued the massage until he was limp and happy, his little palm resting against his cheek. “I hope you’re planning on staying with us. They haven’t been this quiet since we left Linnaeus.” “Where are their mothers?” Before Knoton could answer, the door flew open. Delsin stood in the open doorway, his mouth open and a dazed look in his eyes. “You’re Delsin. I recognize you from your picture. **** Delsin felt his cock harden as his beast urged him to move closer to the little man. He cleared his throat. “What did you do?” He cringed inwardly when he heard the gruff, accusing sound of his voice. Mer frowned. “Excuse me?” “What did you do to the cubs?” “I, um…I’m sorry. I just couldn’t stand to see them all crying if I could do something to help.” Delsin shook his head. “No! I want to know what you did to make them stop crying.” “Oh!” Mer laughed. “It was easy peasy. They just felt insecure and had dirty butts.” He glanced around the room. “I didn’t see any clothes so I just made do with the diapers. They should be warm enough without anything else. This room is like a furnace.” He shrugged. “I’m sorry if I wasn’t supposed to leave the front room, but it seemed more important to get them settled. It’s not healthy for babies to cry for long periods. Where are their mothers?”

Delsin sighed heavily, blinking back the moisture in his eyes. “Our whole pride was slaughtered by a formidable enemy. We’re all that’s left of the Chaarta pride. My brother, our former alpha, sent the cubs away with me so I could hide them from our enemies. They’re my responsibility now.” He breathed in deeply and took a step toward the little man. His scent was enticing, and it was even more potent since Meredith was aroused. “Alpha, the shuttle is ready.” Delsin turned and saw Hakan standing in the doorway. He walked over and pushed him out into the hall, lowering his voice to a whisper. “Never mind. Nobody’s been able to handle the cubs since we left home. I think we should keep him around until we can find a replacement.” Hakan scowled. “That’s not fair to Mer.” Delsin narrowed his eyes. “It’s my decision, and that’s the way it’s going to be. The cubs’ welfare must come first.” Hakan’s nostrils flared. “Very well.” His jaw clenching, he turned and walked stiffly toward the front of the house. Wiping his sweaty hands on his pants, Delsin walked back into the room. As he watched, Mer placed a sleeping Yuma on his stomach and covered his legs with a sheet. He glanced at Knoton and nodded toward the door. His pride mate bowed his head slightly and herded the three young ones out into the hall. “Where’s he taking the kids?” asked Mer. “He and Hakan will take them outside to get some fresh air.” He walked over and sat next to Mer on the bed. His eyes closed when his lion pushed against his rib cage. Mine! Claim mate now! Delsin pushed the beast back and smiled at Mer. “I’m very impressed with the way you handled the young ones.” “I guess it comes kind of naturally. I went to college to be a teacher of preschool-age children.” “So you’re a teacher.” Mer snorted. “Not hardly.”
Meredith’s Pride

“I don’t understand.” “Where I come from gay men aren’t allowed to teach young children. Hell, they don’t tolerate them teaching college kids if they find out.” Delsin thought for a moment, worrying his lip with his teeth. “Maybe my translator isn’t working. Your world doesn’t allow happy men to teach children. What the hell kind of thinking is that?” Mer choked back a laugh. “No, not happy. Gay is my sexual orientation. It means I prefer to have sexual relations with men instead of women.” “And your world frowns on this.” “Well, they don’t necessarily frown upon it. At least as long as it stays away from their own back doors. They don’t think it’s morally right for a gay man to teach little children.” Delsin growled. “That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. When a person has the gift of reaching the very young, they should be allowed to practice that gift. I can promise you my people will never look down on you for anything in your personal life. They’ll be grateful for anything you can do to keep our young safe and happy.” A dull, red flush crept up Mer’s neck. He looked down at his hands. “Um, that’s good to know.” He cleared his throat. “Tell me about your house. It’s furnished kind of weird. Some of it looks like it could be right out of my home town on Earth.” “This house belongs to my friend, Zintssar from Arridia. He built here when he decided he didn’t want to live on his home planet with his father, but wanted to be close in case his people needed him. We’re actually on one of the moons orbiting Arridia. Zin visited Earth with his father when he was younger and really liked it there. I guess he did his best to recreate the same atmosphere when he designed this place.” Delsin glanced toward the door when he heard Etu’s voice in his head. Brother, what is going on? Knoton tells me this human performed magic and got the cubs under control, while Hakan tells me you’re

dishonoring our contract with our mate. I don’t understand. Where is our lovely mate? Delsin sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. There was a telepathic connection between pride members that could be blocked if the person so desired. “Etu, please come in and meet Meredith Carter.” He smiled at Mer. “This is my brother, Etu, and you’ve already met Knoton.” Mer grinned and stood, holding out his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Etu. Most folks call me Mer.” “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mer.” Delsin moved toward the door as Etu shook Mer’s hand. “I’m going to show Mer to his room, and then we need to have a meeting. Come along, Mer.” He walked down the hall without waiting to see if Mer followed. He opened the door at the end of the hall and motioned for him to go inside. He silently groaned as his gaze swept the sparse room. A large bed stood against one wall, covered with a dark-brown blanket and a mound of pillows. One small table stood beside it, while sunlight poured in from a naked, open window. Another closed door led to a small bathroom with a shower. “This is nice.” Mer walked over to look out the window, the steady breeze ruffling the hairs on his head. “I know you must be tired after your long journey. Why don’t you rest, and we’ll wake you when it’s time for dinner. We can go over the particulars of your staying when everyone’s together.” Mer sagged against the wall, his hand gripping the windowsill. Before he dropped his gaze, Delsin noticed a suspicious wetness in his eyes. Slowly Mer stood and walked toward the bed. “Sure, just let me know when you want me.” Delsin shut the door, his lion roaring out his displeasure at leaving his mate. Groaning, he made his way to the office where Etu was pacing back and forth. “What the hell is going on, Delsin?”

“I screwed up, brother. I take full responsibility for this mess.” Etu continued to pace while Delsin told him how Meredith came to be with them. “I’m sorry, Etu. But I have to say I’m impressed with how he managed the cubs when none of us could.” Etu stopped and dropped into a chair. “He seems really nice. My lion is really interested. He wanted me to get closer so he could get in a good sniff.” He folded his hands across his stomach. “I’ve been with males, before but I never imagined myself taking a permanent male mate.” “Me neither. I have to admit he’s attractive, and I know he feels the same way. The smell of his arousal was driving my beast to a frenzy.” Etu sat up and studied Delsin. “Does this mean we’re going to take a male mate?” Delsin thought for a moment. “Well…” He got up and walked to the window. “No, I guess not. We need a female to increase the pack. It wouldn’t be fair to the pride to take a male and let Chaarta die out.” Etu licked his lips, running his fingers through his hair. “What are you going to tell him?” “Nothing for now. I’ll let him know how much we need his help with the cubs and we want to wait to see how well he gets along with them.” Etu growled. “That’s not right, Delsin.” “That’s the way it has to be.” “My beast wants to be closer to him now. What are you going to do if your beast decides to take matters into his own paws?”

Chapter 4 Mer peeked into the children’s room and grinned when he found them all sleeping. Too bad I don’t have a camera. I’d bet anything they don’t often go down at the same time. Quietly he closed the door and headed for the kitchen. His dinner the night before had left a lot to be desired. The guys claimed they’d been taking turns in the kitchen, but none of them were really experienced at cooking. He’d nearly wet his pants when Knoton told him they preferred to shift and catch their meals, but there wasn’t much in the way of game on the small moon. The steaks they’d had for dinner had been brought back from Earth. He shuddered when he thought about the tough meat, charred on the outside and raw on the inside. “I’m happy to cook if I don’t have to experience that again.” Humming slightly out of tune, he pulled a huge slab of bacon from the cooler and began slicing it into thick pieces. He lined them up in a skillet and turned the cooking unit to a low setting. As the meat began to sizzle, he cracked eggs into a large bowl. It had been thoughtful of Knoton to bring back so much food from Earth. It actually gave him a feeling of home to be cooking breakfast for the men. He’d been disappointed at first when the large lion shifter had said they wanted to take things slow to make sure they were compatible, but after sleeping on it, he was convinced it was the smart thing to do. Mer wanted something that would last, and for that to happen they needed to go slow. Who knew he’d end up with a house full of kids, too? It was the perfect situation. Two hot men and children to dote on. “I can’t believe how things have worked out. I’ve got everything I

ever dreamed of.” He heard footsteps coming down the hall as he started turning the slices of bacon. **** Delsin sniffed the air and came fully awake when the aroma of something tasty settled in his nose. It was his turn to cook, but someone must have taken pity on him and saved him from the arduous chore. He quickly dressed and headed for the kitchen. He came to a halt just inside the door. Mer was standing in front of the stove, dressed in a pair of shorts and no shirt. He was humming some tune and wiggling his hips in time to the beat. Delsin felt his cock begin to fill, his lion stretching and purring inside him. Swallowing hard, he cleared his throat. Mer turned around and smiled. “Good morning! Did you sleep well? I figured since you went to the trouble to bring all this food from Earth, I’d give you a hand and cook breakfast for everyone.” He took a step back and bit his lip. “Is that okay?” Delsin took two steps into the room and smiled. “Absolutely, it’s okay. It smells wonderful.” “What’s that heavenly smell?” Etu walked through the door, raking his fingers through his hair. Brother, my lion is fighting me. He wants Mer for a mate, and I’m not sure I can control him. Delsin looked at the heat in Etu’s eyes and groaned inwardly. I know what you’re going through. My own beast is determined to claim the little man no matter what I want. We need to fight it, Etu. We need to find a female shifter that’s willing to come live with our pride so we can increase our numbers. Eventually our lions will understand this. “That smell is the wonderful aroma of bacon, my friend. There’s nothing like starting the day with several thick slices of pig to go with your scrambled eggs.” Mer chuckled and put another pan on the cooking unit. He vigorously stirred a bowl of runny, yellow liquid.

“Man, that smells good.” Hakan walked in, followed closely by Knoton. “When are we eating?” “Any minute now. “ Mer poured the contents of the bowl into the hot pan. “Take a seat, and I’ll bring your plates to you.” A few minutes later he was setting plates of eggs and bacon in front of each man. “Go ahead and get started. I’m gonna run and check on the babies, and then I’ll come back and join you.” Delsin watched him walk down the hall and groaned. “Goddess, this is fantastic.” Knoton shoveled the food in his mouth. Hakan narrowed his eyes. “For somebody that’s not interested in taking him as a mate, the two of you are almost drooling watching him. What’s going on?” Knoton snorted. “If you really don’t want him, would you mind if I take a stab at getting him to like me?” In the blink of an eye, Delsin had Knoton up against the wall with his hands at his throat. “You will keep your paws off of him. Do you understand?” Etu leaned in close. “We will end your life in a very painful way if you don’t stay away.” Knoton grinned. “I can see how the two of you don’t really want or care about the little human.” Delsin tightened his hands and then froze when a bloodcurdling scream came from the back of the house. **** Mer headed for the babies’ room, practically bouncing step to step. A warm glow spread throughout his body as he thought about waking up to Delsin and Etu every morning. I wonder when they’ll wanna take things further. He was certainly ready. His cock had been rock hard since they landed on the moon. He didn’t even mind about the babies. He’d always had a secret yearning for children but had

buried it, believing it could never happen since he’d never been with a woman. When he reached the babies’ room, he quietly pushed open the door. The blankets were bunched up in the middle of the bed, and he couldn’t see any of the children. He started to tiptoe closer when he heard a strange, growling noise and the covers shifted a little to the left. He bit back a scream and held his breath, rushing across the room and throwing back the blanket. Instead of those precious babies, there were five small animal cubs growling and tumbling all over each other. “Oh my God.” He took two steps back, and screamed as loud as he could. The door crashed open, and Delsin and Etu came running in followed closely by Knoton and Hakan. Delsin put his hands on Mer’s shoulders and gazed down at his face. “What’s wrong?” Mer pointed a trembling finger toward the bed. “They’re gone. The babies are gone. Those animals have eaten our babies.” Tears poured down his cheeks, his breath coming in hiccups. When all four men laughed, he pulled away from Delsin’s arms and flattened his back against the wall. “What’s wrong with you? How can you be so heartless? Don’t you care anything about the babies at all?” Delsin pulled him away from the wall and wrapped his arms around his waist while Etu came up behind him and pressed against his back. His eyes closed when Delsin wiped away his tears. “Of course we care about the babies. We love them very much.” Etu leaned in close to whisper in his ear. “It’s good to know you have such strong feelings for them, Mer.” Delsin took Mer’s chin and raised his head. “The babies are fine, Mer. Lion shifters can shift very early in life which is why they need constant monitoring and guidance. That’s another reason why we need you so much. You’ve already developed some kind of bond with them. They respond to you, and they don’t do that for just anybody.”

Mer sniffed and glanced toward the bed. Knoton was sitting there letting their little paws bat at his hands. “You’re telling me those little fur balls are really the babies?” Delsin nodded. “That’s right.” “How do you make them change back?” Delsin walked to the bed and stopped, staring down at the five cubs. His demeanor began to change as he seemed to grow bigger. His hair stood out, looking more like a lion’s mane, while his eyes blackened. The tone of his voice had Mer leaking pre-cum and adjusting his tight shorts. He had an insane urge to obey the alpha male. “Shift now!” A bright blue light surrounded the bed, and then there were five babies lying there naked, laughing up at the alpha lion. “What was the blue light?” Mer gazed at the babies, trying to understand what he’d just seen. “It’s the magic,” said Delsin. “We call the magic from the air when we want to shift to our beasts.” Mer burst into tears and ran from the room. When he reached his bedroom, he collapsed on the bed. I’m never gonna fit in here. I won’t be any good to them if I can’t even control the cubs. They laughed at me. Hell, I may as well go back to Earth. He sat up and wiped his hand across his eyes when the door crashed open and Delsin and Etu walked in. Both men came to sit on the bed, one on each side of him. Delsin pulled Mer into his arms. “We’re sorry we laughed. It wasn’t meant to be mean. We were just really glad that everything was okay. Your scream had us thinking something happened to you. We feared for your safety.” Mer’s breath caught in his throat. He’d never considered they might be worried about him. He swallowed hard when Delsin began rubbing up and down his arms while Etu caressed his back. Delsin took his chin to raise his face and stared deeply into his eyes. “Shit,” he whispered and then lowered his lips.

**** Delsin held his breath as his lips brushed against Mer’s. Brother, my lion is insisting we mate him now. He ignored Etu’s voice and blocked his thoughts. His tongue swiped across Mer’s bottom lip, his flavor bursting through his senses. “I want you,” he whispered. “About damn time.” Mer’s hands trailed up his arms, his fingers tangling in the hairs at the back of his neck. Delsin opened his link with his brother. There’s no harm in making love. Just remember no claiming bites. “Wait!” Mer pushed against Delsin’s chest. “What about the babies?” Delsin smoothed his hand over Mer’s silky hair. “No worries. Knoton and Hakan will protect them with their lives.” **** Mer felt a soft kiss brush to the top of his shoulder as his hair was pulled to the side. Etu’s lips followed the curve of his neck. Delsin inhaled deeply, his eyes closing. “You smell so good.” His fingers trailed across Mer’s chest, lingering on his sensitive nipples. “Your skin is like silk, warm silk. I want to feel it all.” Delsin stroked Mer’s long hair and then the swelling bulge in his shorts, chuckling when Mer groaned loudly. Leaning close, he licked across his lips and then pressed in for another kiss, deepening their connection, sliding his tongue in Mer’s mouth. The tiny bristles on Delsin’s jaw abraded the skin of Mer’s cheek. His kisses stayed slow and easy as they stroked and learned each other. When Delsin pulled back, Mer was left dizzy and wanting. “You taste even better than you smell.” Etu turned Mer in his arms, his hand drawing little circles on Mer’s smooth skin. He raked his body with a heated glance as he

feathered the backs of his fingers across his nipples. “You are so beautiful.” “Oh, God.” Mer closed his eyes when first Delsin and then Etu leaned forward and took a small nipple between their teeth. Both men licked and nibbled, pulling the nipples deep into their mouths. He moaned and then gasped when Delsin tugged the tender flesh, soothing the area with his tongue. Shuddering, Mer reached out and caressed Delsin’s nipples and rubbed his palms along his rock-hard abs. “You are so hot!” Etu pulled Mer to his knees and then reached down and kneaded his ass, a buttock in each hand, spreading and squeezing them. His fingers crept to the waistband of his briefs. They slipped inside, skimming around his waist and delving into his underwear, the tips of his fingers brushing the head of his cock. Mer gasped, spreading his legs wider, when work-roughened hands cupped his balls. Delsin stood when Mer reached out and caressed the swelling between his thighs. He hooked his fingers in the waistband of his pants and tugged them down, giving Mer his first look at a cock that was bigger than he’d expected. “Holy crap! I’m not sure that monster will fit in me.” Delsin caressed the side of his face. “Don’t be afraid. I promise we’ll never do anything to hurt you.” He ripped his shirt off, leaving his body bare, his cock hard and thick against the base of his stomach. His massive chest gleamed in the morning light, tapering down to a trim waist. The only hair on his body was a small nest of curls around the base of his cock. Mer swallowed hard, licking his lips when Etu stood and reached for the fastening of his pants. He fumbled with the button, ripping it off in his haste. It only took a moment for him to be standing before Mer naked, his body nearly identical to Delsin’s. Mer watched, his eyes wide, as each man fisted his own hardened cock. He groaned when they traced their slits with the nails on their thumbs, pushing in just a bit. “You guys are killing me. I need some

attention.” His breath caught when Delsin leaned forward. “Oh, God,” he mumbled, and then gasped aloud as Delsin’s lips surrounded the head of his cock. He let his tongue flutter down the underbelly of his erection and then sucked the meaty flesh into his mouth. “Damn, that feels good.” Mer groaned and pressed his groin into Delsin’s face. He shook his head quickly, heart pounding as he thrust into the fist holding his cock steady. Delsin slid his tongue from the base of Mer’s cock to the tip, stopping just long enough to tongue the slit before sliding back down. “Fuck! Your mouth is hot.” Delsin raised his head and grinned. “I’m glad you think so.” Mer felt his balls tighten and panted. “Can’t hold it. Gonna come.” “That’s it, little one. Feel the pleasure. Come for me.” He came long and hard, his cum squirting onto his stomach and covering Delsin’s hand. Delsin trailed his fingers through the cum, and then brought them to his mouth. “Ummm, you are tasty.” He bent to kiss Mer, bringing the taste of his cum with him. He’d never experienced anything so erotic. “Fuck me,” he whispered into Delsin’s mouth. “Want you inside me.” He brushed his lips against Delsin’s throat. “Want to feel you come inside me, filling me.” **** Delsin chuckled, pulled Mer’s legs out straight, and nipped his thigh. Etu descended on Mer’s neck, growling and grunting, biting and licking the sensitive skin just where Mer’s neck met his shoulder. Don’t bite him, brother. Get control of your beast. Delsin licked his way up Mer’s legs and flicked his tongue across the tip of his cock. “I’m going to fuck you so hard.”

Mer groaned. “I hope you’re planning on using plenty of lube before you try and squeeze that monster in me.” He sighed when Etu bit down on his neck. “Your lube is not necessary, Mer.” “What?” Mer tried to get to his feet. “No way are we doing this dry.” Etu grabbed Mer’s shoulders, pressing his chest against Mer’s back while Delsin moved between his legs. They both buried their faces in his fragrant hair. “We don’t need lube.” Delsin licked his jaw. “Our bodies produce a substance when we’re aroused that lubricates our partners. It has an agent in it that blocks any painful sensation you might feel. I promise you’ll like it.” Mer leaned back and stared into Delsin’s eyes. “Seriously?” Delsin nodded. “I swear this to you. I’d never willingly bring you pain, little man.” Mer let Etu pull him back on the bed, leaving his legs dangling over the side. Delsin slid down and sucked one of his balls into his mouth and tugged, smiling when the small man jerked, his legs coming up to rest on Delsin’s shoulders. Delsin coated his fingers in the secretions from his own cock and then found Mer’s puckered hole with his finger, pushing in slowly. He groaned when the small man lifted his hips to meet the pressure of his hand. When he felt the ring of muscle clamp around his finger, he pushed Mer’s legs back to take his lips in a hard, deep kiss. His mate grunted when his finger brushed over the small mound of flesh inside his rectum. “Mer, I need you to feel every inch of me inside you.” Mer lifted his hips and giggled. “So fuck me.” Delsin groaned when the laughter washed over him, a deep, sensual sound he felt in his balls. He worked two more fingers into the dark entrance and then grabbed his cock and pressed it against the hole, slowly pushing down. Delsin was moving, rocking his hips

slowly, cock hard and balls heavy as he pierced Mer’s body with deep, gentle strokes. “God, I feel so full.” With his cock buried balls deep inside Mer, Delsin felt his canines lengthen. His lion stirred, panting heavily and pushing to get out. Mine! Mate him now! Pushing his beast down, Delsin grunted and then thrust back in, swiveling his hips as he ground into the tight ass. “You’re so thick and hard inside me.” A soft groan escaped Delsin’s lips, and his strokes became faster. He rocked his hips, pegging Mer’s gland every time. Mer jerked and moaned, pulling his legs up and apart. Delsin’s balls drew up tight, belly clenching, as the need to shoot became impossible to ignore. He dragged his lips down Mer’s chest, his body shaking, his voice hoarse as he cried out Mer’s name. His eyes rolled back in his head as shards of pleasure speared him. He drove one final time and came with a deafening roar. It pleased him to see Mer pumping his seed onto his chest. He had made his mate come a second time. As they both slowly got their breath back, Mer slid his legs down, still cradling Delsin between them as they kissed. **** Before Delsin ended the kiss, Etu took his place, grinning as his brother swore and moved slowly away. “Don’t fuss, Brother. It’s my turn.” He slapped Mer on the ass. “Are you ready for me, love?” Mer licked his lips and nodded. “Scoot back on the bed. I want your feet off the floor.” When Mer scurried to get into position, Etu swept his tongue across his shoulders and down his chest to his nipples. “I’m going to taste every inch of you, and then I’m going to fill you again.” He pressed a brief kiss against his lips and then rubbed the stubble on his face against Mer’s

skin as he kissed his way down his belly. His tongue swirled over his quivering abdomen. Etu’s long fingers explored Mer’s perfect cock. For a man of his size, he was impressively endowed. The smell of Mer’s arousal was enticing, and Etu could not withstand it long. He growled and opened his mouth over the leaking cock, the unique flavor filling his senses. “That’s so hot,” Delsin whispered. “Watching his shaft, the skin all wet and shiny. So fucking hot.” Mer’s hips jerked forward, his cock going deeper into Etu’s mouth. Etu wrapped his fingers around the shaft and pumped slowly at first and then more feverishly. Choking cries of pleasure filled the small room. Suddenly Etu pulled away. “Get on your hands and knees, Mer. I want to feel your body wrap around my cock.” Mer got to his knees, braced both hands against the headboard and shoved back. With the head pressing against his hole, Etu’s cock pierced Mer’s body in one slow push. His groan was low and ragged. Pulling completely out, he parted his thighs more and impaled him in one swift, powerful forward thrust. Mer’s inner muscles clamped down on his shaft like a vise. Etu swore, and his buttocks tightened as he ground his hips against his mate’s rump. His hips began to snap, pistoning fast and hard, fucking him at a brutal pace with strong, deep thrusts. Reaching around Mer’s hips, he wrapped his fingers around his shaft. Mer jerked and arched up as he came a third time, shouting Etu’s name as his cock spilled over his fist. Etu thrust deeper into Mer’s hole and barely held back a roar as his orgasm tore through him and he spilled into his mate’s body. Take him. Mate him now. Mine! Etu ignored his lion and pulled from Mer’s limp body. He chuckled when he saw the little human was fast asleep. He looked up at Delsin. “What are we going to do?” “We’re going to stick to the plan and find a mate that can give us cubs.”

“You’re a fool if you think your beast will sit still for that. It was all I could do to hold mine back from claiming him.” “I know. It was the same for me. We’ve got to be strong. We’re not kids anymore, and we should be able to control our lions.” “Let’s get him cleaned up and tucked under the covers. He’s exhausted.” Delsin ran his hand over Mer’s head, brushing back his hair. “I wish things could be different.” **** Mer slowly woke, stretching his body under the light sheet. He cracked his eye open and sighed when he saw the empty place beside him. It would’ve been nice to wake up in their arms. Pulling the spare pillow over his face, he inhaled deeply, catching the faint scent of Delsin. The memory of their triad lovefest played out in his mind. I don’t have to worry about them sending me away now. The wolves I’ve read about on Earth mate for life, and lions can’t be any different. Can they? He rose up and glanced toward the door when he heard the babies crying. “Okay, Meredith, get your butt in gear. Your cubs need you.” Moving quickly, he rushed into the bathroom and took the fastest shower of his life. Within fifteen minutes he was dressed and walking down the hall. When he walked into the front room, he stopped and laughed. Someone had taken broken tree limbs and constructed their own version of a huge playpen. Hakan and Knoton were squatting on the floor next to the wooden structure, trying to shush the baby’s crying. Mer gave a snort of laughter and then covered his mouth with his hand when both men glared at him. “It’s not funny,” Hakan whined. “We’ve made sure their diapers are clean and offered them food, but nothing makes them happy.”

Mer smiled and walked over to the babies’ pen. As soon as they saw him, they settled down and stopped crying. Motioning for the men to move back, he picked up Taima, Jacy, and Nodin, setting them on the floor at his feet. The three of them kept up a litany of babble as they explored their new boundaries. “What are you doing?” asked Knoton. “Please don’t tell me you expect me to hold any of them. I’ll happily teach them to hunt when they’re older, but for now they’re all yours.” Mer shook his head and smirked as he threw the small toys from the pen onto the floor. A hyper Taima jumped from toy to toy, chattering nonsense, and climbing all over Jacy who didn’t seem to mind. Nodin screeched as only a toddler could when Taima grabbed a block from his hand. He was just the right amount of cute mixed with a little bit of impatience, making him an attention-seeking monster. Mer ignored his outburst and bent to pick up Yuma. With tears in his eyes, Yuma’s small hands twisted in Mer’s hair, pulling just this side of painful. “Okay, little man. It’s all right. You’re okay.” He crooned to the small boy as he carefully extracted his hair from the tiny fingers. His glance went to Hakan. “Will you get me a couple of blankets from the bedroom?” “Sure.” Hakan scrambled to do as he asked. It took less than a minute for him to come running back with a couple of blankets and a stack of towels. “Here you go.” “Spread the blue one on the floor next to the playpen.” He watched as Hakan carefully laid the blanket out. When he was done, he lowered Yuma down and placed his on his tummy. The chubby baby cooed, giggled, and kicked his arms and legs. “Another month and we won’t be able to keep up with him.” Mer turned his attention to the last baby in the pen. Keme was curled in a ball, her breathing even and deep. She looked adorable, her brown curls framing her cherubic face. Her eyelashes rested on appleround cheeks. Carefully, he lifted her into his arms, patting her

bottom and hugging her tight. She twisted, rooting at Mer’s shoulder, making small grunts. “She’s gonna be demanding a bottle soon.” Knoton jumped to his feet. “I’ll heat it if you’ll feed her.” Mer snickered and looked down at his cubs. Jacy was giggling as she tried to push her toy up under the couch. Nodin was trying to get his big toe in his mouth, and Taima was lifting his arms demanding to be picked up. Sighing, Mer dropped to the floor and made himself comfortable with his back against the couch. With one hand he pulled Yuma’s blanket closer so he could reach the baby. Immediately the cubs began to climb all over him, laughing and chattering constantly. “How do you do that?” asked Hakan. “We’ve been trying to get them to stop crying for over an hour.” Mer shook his head. “It’s the playpen, guys. They don’t like being confined.” He rocked Keme back and forth as she sucked on his index finger. “They just wanted freedom and a little attention.” “It makes sense.” Knoton bent and turned Yuma around when he started to crawl off the blanket. “Our lions don’t like cages, so it stands to reason they wouldn’t like to be confined. I’m sorry if we made it worse.” He moved to sit next to Hakan on the couch. “Don’t worry about it. Kids are resilient. They bounce back fast to their little happy selves.” “We could…” Hakan frowned, glanced at Knoton, and then both men stood and stared toward the door. “What is it?” Mer cuddled Keme closer to his chest. He jumped when the door flew open and Delsin and Etu walked in. Delsin ran his fingers through his hair. “Hakan, Knoton, in the office. We need to have a meeting.” “No.” Etu put his hand on Delsin’s chest when he turned to walk away. “Mer’s life is on the line, same as ours, and he deserves to know the truth.” Struggling to his feet, Mer faced his mates. “Okay, you’re scaring me. What’s going on?”

Chapter 5 Mer bit his lip hard enough to leave a coppery taste in his mouth. He watched as Delsin and Etu looked at each other. Delsin sighed and motioned for everyone to take a seat. “We’ve received a communiqué from Arrida.” “What about?” asked Hakan. “Their planetary sensors tracked another ship following Hakan into their space when he brought Mer from Earth. They tracked them for a while and then lost the signal right before they circled behind one of the other moons orbiting their planet. They can’t pick them up at all now, so they’re either cloaked or they’ve landed on the other moon. They’ve made no attempt to contact Arridia, so they have to be up to no good.” Knoton stood and paced across the floor, carefully stepping over the crawling toddlers. “It has to be the Mkata.” Mer tilted his head, bouncing Keme on his shoulder. “Why do you say that?” “The Mkata is the name of the pride that declared war on the Chaarta. They tried to wipe out our entire line, and I’ll bet they’re after the cubs.” Etu spent several minutes explaining the history of bad blood between the leaders of the two prides. “Honaw is the alpha of the Mkata, and he’s insane. Preyta’s refusal pushed him over the edge, and he’s determined to kill everyone associated with Chaarta.” Mer cupped the back of Keme’s silky head. “What about the babies? Will he kill them, too?” Delsin shrugged. “He’d probably kill all of them except Taima and Keme.”
Meredith’s Pride
55
“Why would he keep them alive?” Mer blinked back tears. “Because they’re Preyta’s cubs. For some sick reason he wants to raise them as his own. I guess as a final dishonor to Chayton.” Mer stiffened, his hands tightening until the baby let out a squeal. “How could anybody look at those beautiful babies and kill them?” Etu blew out a breath. “They will look at those babies and see full-grown lions coming for revenge. It will be very easy for them to slay them.” “That’s enough speculation.” Delsin stood and motioned toward the door. “We’re upping security and taking turns at watch.” “Don’t you have some type of surveillance equipment that can tell you if they’re near?” asked Mer. “This moon has a problem with electronic surveillance because of a dense gravity so we’ll have to be even more diligent. There are several hiding places on Khera that we can utilize if they manage to land their craft. I’m going to take Mer and show him where they are. Hakan, I want them stocked with supplies right away. If we have to use them, we could be there a while.” “I’ll get right on it, Delsin.” Delsin cleared his throat. “I sent a message to Zintssar on Kilara letting him know what’s happening and asking for his help. If we’re lucky, he’ll get in touch with his father and have him send troops.” “I don’t understand.” Mer laid a sleeping Keme on the couch. “If I remember correctly, Zintssar’s father is the ruler of Arridia. We’re circling Arridia now. Why can’t we just ask his father to help us out?” Etu snorted. “It’s all politics, Mer. We don’t have the authority to ask Arridia for help because we’re not a Federation nation member since our pride was wiped out. When he killed Chayton, Honaw became the leader of Linnaeus. He’s the only one that could officially ask for assistance from Arridia.” “And I thought Earth’s politics were fucked up.” “Knoton, watch the cubs for a bit. I want to take Mer and show him the closest cave that’s appropriate for hiding. He needs to be able

to flee there with the cubs if anything happens.” He held his hand out to Mer. “Will you come with me?” Without hesitation, Mer took his hand. Together, they left the house and headed down a path through the woods. He listened to the soughing wind, the trees groaning with the breaking of their limbs. The area that Delsin traveled was dense, the hanging moss tickling his hair as they move through the foliage. There were patches of long grass with wildflowers where falling leaves twirled languorously, drifting to the ground. “Look to the left when we round the next bend, Mer. I think you’ll like it.” Mer kept his eyes open and grinned when they came to a small stream, the smell of algae and water slime thick in the air. Stopping, he bent and touched the water, the cool liquid slipping over his fingers. He picked up a small twig and scratched in the mud, unearthing a wormlike creature. Sighing, he grabbed a smooth stone and skimmed it over the dark water. “What is it?” Mer glanced at Delsin. His brows were raised, his eyes wide. “I was remembering my grandfather’s farm. He had a pond just like this one.” He laughed and swatted at a flying insect. “Well, not quite like this one. Grandfather’s farm didn’t have plants and algae like this. It was in Nebraska. He’s the one who taught me how to skim stones on the water.” “I’m sorry we can’t stay here longer. There’s not much time, and I need to show you the caves so you’ll know where to go if there’s trouble. I’m sorry I have to interrupt your memories.” Mer walked over and put his hand on Delsin’s arm. “It’s okay. The memories aren’t all that good. It wasn’t a very happy time in my life.” He moved a little closer. “I’d rather make new memories with you.” On impulse, he rose up on his tiptoes and touched his lips to Delsin’s. At first the large man stiffened. Then, he seemed to purr

right before his mouth opened, and his tongue thrust deep. He pulled Mer completely off the ground, kissing him passionately. Groaning, Delsin set Mer on his feet. “We’ll have to save this for later, little man. We need to get the safety issues settled first.” Mer snickered. “Okay, but I’m holding you to that.” He waved his hand toward the trail. “Lead on, oh great alpha.” Delsin chuckled. “Smart-ass.” He walked for another fifteen minutes and then stopped. “Look around carefully, Mer. Do you see anything special?” Mer studied the bushes, turning all around but couldn’t see anything special. “Nope. Just looks like more of the same to me.” Delsin moved forward and pushed away a bunch of thorny brush, revealing a small opening in the rocks. “Is that a cave?” asked Mer. “Yes.” “No way! No way in hell am I crawling into that space.” “Don’t stress yourself, Mer. It’s perfectly safe, and it’s a lot bigger on the inside. It’s already stocked with supplies. You’ll be perfectly safe here if trouble comes.” Mer crossed his arms over his chest and narrowed his eyes. “I’m not crawling through that hole, and that’s final.” “Then you leave me no choice.” “Eeeek! What are you doing?” Mer struggled in Delsin’s arms. “Put me down, you big oaf. You can’t treat me like this. I don’t wanna go in the cave.” Despite his protests, Mer found himself inside the rock cave. He glared at Delsin, his body tense. “Don’t you ever do anything like that again. Just because you’re bigger than me doesn’t mean you can treat me like a child.” Delsin sighed. “I’m sorry. There’s no time to address your fears properly. The faster we get everyone to safety the better. I would never do anything to cause you harm. Please, can’t you forgive me and work with me to keep the cubs safe?”

Mer felt his cheeks burn as he looked around the cave. “Yeah, I forgive you. I want the babies to stay safe.” The enclosure consisted of stone walls with a dirt floor. Rock-like structures hung from the ceiling and shot up from the floor almost like they were trying to meet. The bright light at the entrance faded to total darkness deeper in the cavern. He froze when he heard water dripping, the wind whistling around the stone entrance and the skittering of little animals in the darkness. “Is this place safe for the babies?” “I wouldn’t leave them alone here, but with someone to watch over them they’ll be perfectly safe.” Mer felt bumpy, crumbling rocks beneath his feet as Delsin pushed him farther into the darkness. He slipped on a patch of wet rock when the alpha walked away, leaving him alone with his fears. “Where are you going?” “Be patient.” Delsin began lighting torches, illuminating the dark corners. Sighing in relief, Mer looked around. Small pools of water were collecting around the walls where water dripped constantly. The lichen and moss created a decaying smell that almost took his breath away. He started when Delsin grabbed his arm, pulling him to the right toward a small alcove that looked like someone had cleaned it. There were shelves with items stacked neatly, and a large playpen with blankets and pillows. Next to the cubs’ bed were several mattresses. “There’s everything you could possibly need in here, Mer. You could stay here for some time if you had to. There are enough supplies to last several months, and the sound of the stream and animals will mask the sound of the babies crying. At least we’re pretty sure it will.” “Wow, that’s comforting.” Delsin walked over and slipped his arms around Mer’s waist. “We’d never endanger you purposely. I just want you in a safe place

with the cubs in case there’s trouble. Please?” He pushed Mer against the wall and covered his lips with his own. Mer groaned and pushed against Delsin’s chest. “Ow!” He rubbed his hand on the back of his head where it had bumped against the loose rock. Delsin growled, yanking Mer up into his arms. “I’m so sorry. I can’t believe I’ve already broken my promise and allowed you to get hurt.” He scooped him up and laid him on one of the mattresses, following him down and covering him with his large body. “Don’t we need to wait for our other mate?” asked Mer, his concentration wavering as Delsin worked on the fastening of his pants. “No, we don’t have to wait for Etu. We can have a relationship separately.” Mer had only a moment to wonder why Delsin never called him mate before losing himself in the large alpha’s kiss. **** Delsin wrapped his arms around the smaller man and pulled him closer. He gazed deeply into Mer’s eyes. There was no mistaking the burning hunger and heat in their blue depths. He slammed their mouths together, devouring Mer’s lips, his tongue sliding against his, licking and stroking him. His fingers tangled in the long, silky strands of his hair, tilting his head back for a better angle. It pleased him when Mer whimpered into his mouth. Pulling Mer closer, he stroked his hand down his spine and nipped at his earlobe. “I want you, Mer. Here and now.” His hands moved down to Mer’s hips, holding him tight against his body, their erections pressed teasingly together. “Then I think we should get naked.” Mer pushed out of Delsin’s arms. His chest and arm muscles flexed as he whipped his shirt over his head.

Delsin tore off his own shirt and moved back into Mer’s arms, burying his face into a warm body. Leaning back, he let his hands trail over Mer’s chest as he licked the shell of his ear. “I need to taste you.” His tongue slid over the seam of the little man’s lips and then pushed inside his mouth, his teeth nipping at his lips. When Mer groaned, he licked a path down his chest to the flat nipples, breathing in his scent. Growling softly, he sucked the small nub between his teeth. Mer clutched at Delsin’s shoulders and then ran his hands over his muscled arms. He let his hand slide down between their bodies and cupped the prominent bulge in Delsin’s pants, squeezing gently. Delsin yanked viciously on the fastening of his pants, jerking them down his legs. The sound of fabric tearing was loud in the small cave. He licked a line right down the center of Mer’s body, from his sternum to the waistband of his shorts, and then unbuttoned and pushed them and his briefs down and off his legs. He pulled Mer closer, letting his palms run over his perfect ass. His cock was fully engorged, rosy red, crowned by a carefully shaped patch of blond, curly hair. “Touch me, please,” Mer begged. Delsin chuckled, tightened his arms around Mer’s waist and lowered him to his back on a mattress. He settled beside him, immediately reaching down and clasping Mer’s cock. He wrapped his fingers around the steely shaft. Mer groaned and pushed into his fist. “Goddess, I could just eat you.” “Oh, yes. I’d like that.” Mer panted. Delsin rolled Mer’s balls in his hand, watching his cock leaking fluid freely. “I have to have a taste.” Leaning forward, he licked and nuzzled, finally sucking the warm sac into his mouth. Mer’s hand grabbed the base of his own shaft. “If you keep that up, I’m gonna blow.” Delsin licked Mer’s balls as a drop seeped from the slit of his cock and began to streak down the flared head. Soon, another drop

followed. He focused back on the thick cock in front of him and took the crown into his mouth, sucking lightly. “Oh, God, yes.” Mer’s hips jerked, his legs tightening around Delsin. Delsin’s hand squeezed the shaft as he drew his lips over Mer’s sensitive skin, his tongue flitting like a butterfly under the ridge, teasing the slit. Slowly he licked lightly across the tip. Mer groaned and thrust into Delsin’s mouth. His lean hips pumped upward, bucking wildly as Delsin held tight. Delsin pumped his hand and was rewarded with a splash of the salty fluid on his lips and tongue. Mer’s cum coated the inside of his mouth as Delsin swore and grunted. He continued to lick and suck until Mer relaxed. Mer reached down and caught hold of Delsin’s cock in his fist. “Fuck me, Delsin. Fill me up.” “Don’t! Let go or it’ll be over too fast.” He moved back and flipped Mer onto his stomach. “Hold on, little man. I’m going to fuck you good.” He growled as he moved behind Mer, the harsh sound morphing into a long, ragged purr. Mer moaned when Delsin’s hand smoothed over his hip, his finger trailing down the cleft of his ass. His hand roamed over his buttocks, kneading the fleshy cheeks as the tip of his cock grazed the seam. Mer pulled his knees up, giving him easier access, and then jumped slightly when Delsin caressed the puckered opening hidden between his ass cheeks. Delsin rubbed his fingers over his leaking cock, coating them in the slick secretions. Slowly he circled the dark hole with the tips of his fingers, letting one slide into the warm opening. Mer’s moans and his ass pushing back had him adding two more fingers quickly. Easing back, he lined up his cock and pressed for entry. He gasped, growling steadily, as the tight, hot hole engulfed his cock. “You feel so good.” “Hard, Delsin. Fuck me really hard.”

Delsin pulled out slowly and thrust back in with a sharp snap of his hips. Mer sucked in a breath when he pushed in farther. He stilled his movements, sliding halfway out. “Did I hurt you?” “God, no. There was a sharp pain when you entered, but it turned to pleasure fast. Don’t stop, please.” Delsin began slowly fucking his ass and working his way back in. He looked down and watched as his hard shaft stretched him open, filling him completely. He thrust in and out, gently at first and then faster. Deep guttural cries burst from his arched throat as he slammed his hips forward. “Touch yourself.” Delsin panted. “I want you to come again.” Mer’s hand slid beneath his body, jerked back and forth a couple of times and then stopped. The small human’s head fell back as his scream filled the cave. Delsin felt his balls tighten just before he came, shooting his seed into the small body of his mate beneath him. Leaning forward, he took the skin of the top of Mer’s shoulders between his teeth and had to fight to keep his lion from breaking skin. Mine! I want my mate! Claim him now! Trembling, Delsin ran the flat of his tongue over the red marks he’d made with his teeth, and fell down onto the mattress, pulling Mer with him. He put his hand to the back of Mer’s head and pulled him down for a kiss. Sealing their mouths together, he sucked on his tongue, marking him in the only way he could. “Wow.” Mer chuckled and cuddled closer to Delsin’s body. “That just gets better each time.” Delsin ran his hand possessively over Mer’s sweaty back. “We can—” “Alpha, we need you.” “Damn, that’s Knoton. He wouldn’t interrupt us unless it was an emergency. Get dressed quickly, Mer.” ****

Mer tripped in his haste to pull on his shorts, breathing a sigh of relief when Delsin stopped him from hitting the floor. “What do you think is wrong?” Delsin shook his head. “Let’s just go find out.” He moved toward the front of the cave with Mer following close behind. “What’s wrong, Knoton?” Mer blinked several times to adjust to the sunlight and focused on Knoton. The man’s lips were pressed together tightly, his nostrils flaring. “I’m sorry for the intrusion, my Alpha, but a small craft has landed on the opposite side of the moon. Etu and Hakan are on the way with the cubs, and he has your weapons.” Mer’s mouth dropped open when he saw the belt Knoton had around his waist. Something resembling a large gun hung at his side. “Did anybody see who was in the ship? Maybe it’s someone from Arridia paying us a visit.” Delsin shook his head. “They would have used the landing site. If they’ve landed on the opposite side, they’ve set down outside the forest. They want to stay hidden.” “Have you got their bed ready?” Hakan walked out of the woods carrying a huge basket with Yuma and Keme curled up inside. Etu was right behind him with Taima strapped to a harness on his back and Jacy and Nodin in his arms. All five of the babies were sleeping. “How in the world did you get them to sleep all at the same time and get them here without waking them up?” Mer moved closer and peered into the basket at the sleeping cubs. Etu moved toward the cave. “We sent a suggestion to their minds. They won’t wake for a few hours, and then they’ll be pretty grumpy. Hopefully this will be over by then.” Bending, he moved through the small cave entrance. Mer followed and helped get the sleeping children onto the bed. “Will they be okay?” Etu caressed his back. “They’ll be fine. The suggestion works because their minds are still infant. They’ll be able to resist it as they

get older.” He turned toward the mouth of the cave and stopped. “I also gave them some herbs with their lunch that will help to mask their scent. It’ll last for several days. I’m pretty sure Honaw and his men will search the area thoroughly, and I didn’t want them finding you by scent. I didn’t have enough to give you, and I’m not sure it would even work on a human. I’d recommend you take some of the moss and rub it over as much of your body as you can. It’ll keep you hidden for a while.” “Mer, I want you to take these.” Delsin held a weapon in each of his hands. One was a dagger-like, curved knife with an ornate handle. Mer took it and stuck it into the waistband of his pants. “What is that?” Mer asked. “It’s a laser weapon.” Delsin showed him how to activate the gun. “You only have to press this lever and it will shoot a thin laser stream. It’s not particularly deadly, but it can drive away an enemy and incapacitate them for a short time.” “Wow!” Mer giggled. “My first ray gun!” He choked back another laugh when he saw the frowns on Delsin’s and Etu’s faces. “Sorry! It’s the adrenaline. When I’m nervous it makes me silly.” Etu rubbed up and down Mer’s back. “We trust you, Mer. I know you’ll do everything you can to protect the cubs. Just stay in the cave and everything will be fine. We’ll come get you when the danger is over.” “No, you should stay here with us. If we all stay here the other pride will get bored and leave. Or, maybe Arridia will send people to drive them away. You’ll be safer here with me.” “That’s not possible, Mer. An alpha does not run and hide from his enemies. I’m the alpha now, and I’m going to handle things in a way that would have made my brother proud.” Delsin moved toward the mouth of the cave. “Do as Etu ordered. Stay in this cave until we come for you.” Mer let his tears fall as he watched them leave, covering the mouth of the cave with brush.

**** Delsin slunk lower, his body blending with the heavy forest. He needed to get to the landing site to see what they were up against. He could hear the faint sound of voices, so he knew he was getting close. There it is. Etu, can you hear me? Yes, brother. I’m here. Where are you? Just outside their ship. There are eight men that I can see. Hold on, someone else is getting off the ship. He waited quietly, downwind, for the unknown man to make an appearance. His heartbeat quickened when he recognized the man strutting down the ramp. Well? Who is it, brother? None other than the big man himself. Honaw came with his men. Do you know what this means, Etu? We can end this here, today, if we take him out. We could go home, back to Linnaeus. “You’re crazy. Don’t be a fool. If Chayton couldn’t take him down what makes you think we can? Just be on your guard. I’ll take care of everything. Delsin watched as five of the Mkata pride fanned out, each of them taking a different direction toward the house they’d been staying in. It was good he’d had his men spread out to cover a larger area. They’re making their move. Etu, Honaw’s chief guard, Tokala, is coming your way. He’s sent his two best men toward the house. Let Knoton know to take Dichali and Hakan can take on Sani. Pass the word they should try and engage them as far away from the shuttle as possible. He’s leaving guards here, and you don’t want them coming to help their pride mates. What are you going to do, Delsin? Honaw is coming my way, along with his enforcer, Lonato. Everyone stay back. They’re mine. Delsin shielded his thoughts from his brother and moved farther into the jungle. He knew the perfect place to take on the alpha.

Delsin stripped in preparation of shifting. He crouched, listening to the crunch of the leaves as Honaw and Lonato moved closer. Centering his thoughts, he prepared for battle. He watched as they came into the clearing. Honaw lifted his head and sniffed. “You might as well come out, Delsin. I can smell your fear from here.” He smirked. “Come out and I’ll make your death quick instead of long and painful as I did your alpha.” Delsin growled, and stepped into the clearing. He motioned Honaw forward. “Bring it on. I’m formally challenging you, Honaw. You’re going down.” Honaw threw back his head and laughed. “I’m happy to accept your challenge, Delsin. But according to pack law, you must first best my enforcer before you can call me out.” Lonato grinned and stepped in front of Honaw. “I’m ready anytime you are.” “So be it.” Delsin called the blue light and felt his bones reshaping, the magic filling his body as he changed into his lion. It only took a few seconds to be standing in his feline form. He glanced over at Lonato and saw a massive, orange-and-gray lion. The two stared into each other’s eyes for a moment, and then they pounced. They met in the middle of the clearing, claws extended, incisors down. Delsin was a little faster and rolled the large lion under his body, and then roared when he felt claws open his sides, blood gushing. He tightened his hold on the enforcer and dug in his claws. His jaws snapped, nipping skin everywhere he could reach. Lonato growled, trying to throw him off his body, but Delsin hung on, maneuvering his fangs toward his opponent’s throat. He dropped his shield to search for his brother. Etu, I’m about to take Lonato down and then take on Honaw. I know I can win. I’ve taken out the enemy that came this way. I will come and help you with the alpha.

No! Go and assist Hakan and Knoton. When they have eliminated their threat, the three of you take the ship. I’ll handle this on my own. He put his shields back up as he closed his jaws over the trachea of his enemy, biting down and ripping out his throat. He turned to shift and reissue his challenge and was knocked to the ground when the alpha jumped him from behind, landing on his back. It was the act of a coward and a shameful way to start a challenge. Delsin was weak from loss of blood. Shifting would have healed his wounds and allowed him to start the new challenge fresh. If he tried to shift now, he’d be killed. He surged forward, tangling with the massive alpha lion. It was a short battle. For a few brief moments they fought, claws and teeth leaving impressions on each other. Then Honaw clawed his chest deeply, leaving him a bloody heap on the ground. Honaw held Delsin down, his jaws around the lion’s throat. He gazed into his eyes and spoke into his mind, chuffing when Delsin’s eyes widened. You did not know that a true alpha can put his thoughts in any lion, not just his own pride. I’m not going to kill you outright, boy. You’re not a true alpha and can’t force a shift when you’re this wounded. I’m going to leave you to bleed to death. I know the cubs are here, and I’m going to find them and bring them before you so I can kill them in front of you, and then your failure as an alpha will be complete. Growling, he turned and moved away. Brother, can you hear me? Delsin tried to send a message to Etu, but he was so weak he didn’t think it would get through. He lay there, bleeding, watching Honaw move off down the trail toward the caves. He knew the alpha wouldn’t hesitate to kill Mer to get his hands on the cubs. Oh, Meredith! I wish I’d mated you for real. I should have told you how I really feel. Slowly his eyes closed.

Chapter 6 Mer couldn’t stop his trembling as he watched the cubs sleeping. It must have been one hell of a hypnotic suggestion to keep them knocked out this long. He glanced toward the front of the cave. I wish to hell I knew what was going on. Maybe I can just take a peek outside and see if I can see any of the guys. He blew out the torch and moved toward the entrance. He stopped when he heard a strange noise. He opened his mouth to ask who’s there and then froze, pressing himself against the cold, wet stone, his gaze searching the darkness. His stomach clenched at the unmistakable scratch of paws passing over dead leaves and a snout snuffling the air, rooting for a foreign scent. Hell, they’re probably looking for me. Not sure if the animal was friend or foe, he crept backward slowly, soundlessly. A loud chuffing sound was followed by a bright blue light flaring. Mer decided it was better to see his enemy coming, so he quickly lit a torch and moved away from the cavern where the babies slept. A tall, handsome naked man appeared at the cave’s entrance. He raked Mer’s body with a disdainful glance and laughed. “You’re a damn human. They’ve trusted their cubs to a human.” Mer felt relief when the stranger ignored him, moving deeper into the cave away from the cavern where the babies slept. I guess he knows I’m not much of a threat. Lifting his head, the stranger inhaled deeply. “They’re not here.” He whirled and pinned Mer with an angry glare. “Where are they, human?”

Thank God. He can’t smell them. I’ve got to get him out of here before the little darlings wake. Mer took a deep breath. “They’ve been secured near the shuttle for safety. I guess their uncle figured they’d be close if he needed to leave here quickly.” If I can get him to take me to the shuttle, maybe Delsin will have time to find me. The naked man moved closer, sniffing the air around Mer. “You smell of their leader. Are you his mate?” When Mer didn’t answer, he laughed. “The stench of your fear is great, human. It’s all the answer I need. I think I’ll just take you with me and then offer an exchange. The Chaarta male can have his mate if he brings me the children of my enemy.” “Why do you want those babies so much?” The stranger’s eyes flashed red, and Mer had to cover his ears when he roared. “Those cubs should have been mine. Preyta was my mate, and I’ll raise her children as if they were born in my home.” “Not if I can help it.” Mer turned to run and saw a bright blue light from the corner of his eyes. Before he could move, a huge weight knocked him to the ground. A sharp pain shot through his head when it came in contact with a rock, and then everything went black. **** Delsin groaned and tried to open his eyes. He’d waited until Honaw had disappeared into the forest before shifting into his human body. Honaw was wrong. Delsin was a true alpha. Shifting had saved his life, but it had taken time to regain his strength. The pain burning in his chest and throat was bad, but he could sense the bleeding had stopped. He looked up into the eyes of his brother and felt fear as the sounds of his heartbeat roared in his ears. Etu was clearly in pain. “What is it?” His voice was gravely, barely recognizable. Etu sobbed. “I’m sorry for my weakness, my Alpha.”

“Stop stalling, Etu.” Delsin scowled and tried to sit up. “We’re brothers first. Tell me what has happened. Did you and the others kill Honaw?” “No, Alpha.” “The cubs?” “They’re safe, Delsin. Knoton and Hakan are watching over them.” “Why is Mer not with them? Was he hurt?” Etu lowered his head until his chin rested on his chest. His breath came in ragged pants. “He’s gone, Delsin.” Delsin managed to get to his feet. “What do you mean, he’s gone?” “Honaw took him.” Delsin threw back his head and roared. Immediately he heard the babies begin to cry. “Why would he take a human?” “He sent a message that he would return the Chaarta alpha his mate when you deliver him the children of Preyta.” Again Delsin roared. His beast was furious and demanding to be let out to search for their mate. “Did he say where to bring the cubs?” Etu’s mouth dropped open. “He said to bring them to Linneaus.” He moved closer and put his hand on Delsin’s arm. “What can we do, brother?” Delsin took a deep breath. “We’re going to Linnaeus and getting our mate.” **** Mer opened his eyes and blinked several times, unwilling to believe what he was seeing. It looked like he was in some kind of dingy jail cell. The bed creaked as he sat up, the thin mattress sagging in the middle like the sludgy bilge of a rotten ship. How many others had claimed this spot before him, staring at the same chipped paint that he did now?

The last thing he remembered was that asshole jumping on him and slamming him to the ground. I wonder where Delsin and Etu are. God, I hope the babies are safe. He looked around and wrinkled his nose. The cell walls and floor were made from stone. He walked over, wrapping his fingers around the cold steel bars. His face felt swollen, and he raised his hand and let his fingers probe a wound on his forehead. There were torches in iron sconces scattering shadows across the floor. The sound of weeping came from the narrow passages off to the right, breaking the silence of his prison. The place reeked of smoke and decay. He paced across the hard floor, sweat dripping down his face. The sound of an iron door shuddering open had him huddling in the corner, drawing his legs up tight to his body. Shaking, he closed his eyes and touched a dry spot on the wall, moving his finger in slow, soft strokes. In his mind he saw Delsin and Etu. He held on to the image of their smiling faces until he could no longer ignore the approaching heavy footsteps of his captors. A strange catlike man appeared at the cell door. He looked at Mer and smirked, then opened the door, the click of the lock loud in the small room. “Let’s go.” Mer hesitated. “What do you want from me?” The stranger pulled him out and pushed him toward a dark hall. Mer shuddered as he walked down the long passage, the sound of weeping getting louder with each step. There were other cells with prisoners huddled against the bars or hiding in the corners, pleading or weeping. Their footsteps echoed down the walkway until he reached an open door. Mer was pushed through, barely able to stay on his feet. The guard closed the door, the sound of the lock engaging sending feelings of dread through his body. Mer looked around, his mouth dropping open. There were chains fixed to the walls, the coppery scent of blood in the air. He crossed his

arms across his chest and whispered. “Please, guys. Come get me.” He turned when the door opened, and the man from the cave walked in, a wicked grin on his face. “I’m sorry about this, human, but I’ve got to do something to get your mate here. We haven’t been introduced. I’m Honaw, alpha of the Mkata pride.” He grabbed Mer and pulled him toward the wall, his feet dragging on the hard floor. “Stop, please. Why are you doing this?” Honaw deftly attached an iron manacle around his ankle. “I’ll be back in a minute. Don’t go away, human.” He left the room laughing heartily. Frantically, Mer ran his fingers along cracks in the stone wall looking for weaknesses. He pulled at the chains where they’d been welded to the wall. The chain attached to his ankle cuff slithered across the floor behind him like a demented snake. Honaw returned, carrying a long, black whip. It coiled around his arm and seemed to be alive. “Try to relax, human. This won’t take long.” Mer swallowed hard. “What are you gonna do?” “Your pain will bring your mate running.” Mer’s legs trembled, his hands twisting together. “Are you crazy?” “The mind bond with your mate will let him feel your pain and draw him here. The same way you feel his pain and emotions.” Shit, I’m in trouble. Mer knew then the lions had not really mated with him. He’d never felt any emotions or thoughts from them. “Don’t do this, please. It won’t work.” “It has to.” Honaw drew back his arm and let the coiled leather fly. It cut a fiery trail across Mer’s back, and he screamed. Before he could catch his breath, the devil rope tore another path across his back. His world became a hazy realm of pain as he lost count of the

strokes. He was unprepared to feel hands close around his arms. He flinched in pain and struggled against the guard lifting him to his feet. “Don’t worry, human.” Honaw held the door open for the guard. “That will bring the alpha running.” The guard dragged Mer back to his cell. He could taste blood where he’d bitten his lip as the metal bars rattled closed behind him. His eyes grew used to the dim light of his new home as the tears fell freely down his face. When the blood trickled slowly down his back, a strange feeling swelled in his chest as he lost all hope. “Where are you?” he whispered. **** Delsin stood at the shuttle’s viewport, his body rigid, his hands clamped so tightly to the back of a chair his knuckles were white. He’d longed for the day they could return to Linnaeus, but this wasn’t the homecoming he’d dreamed of. Avenging Chayton’s death was important, but nothing was as important as saving their mate. “Stay strong, Mer. I’m coming for you.” He heard footsteps and turned his gaze toward the door. “My Alpha!” Knoton bowed his head as he walked into the observation room. Delsin raised a brow. “So formal. We’ve been friends since we were small cubs. Nothing will ever change that.” Knoton sighed. “Sorry, Delsin. The situation seemed to call for formal.” “What’s up?” “Sensors show all life signs to be in the Mhatara.” Delsin took a shuffling step back, his mouth falling open. “Are you sure? I thought for sure Honaw would take over our settlement in the mountains.” The Mhatara was a vast swampland. “There’s no mistake. They’re going to have the advantage now. It’ll be like fighting in their own back yard.”

“Very well. Get us as close as you can. There’s no point in trying to hide. He knows we’re coming.” It would be a lot harder to get Mer out now. “Did you receive a communiqué from Zintssar?” “Affirmative. He says the cubs are fine. His mates are handling things. He wanted to know if he should send some of his father’s men from Arrida.” “I don’t want to involve others in our dispute. As long as I know the cubs are safe, I can handle everything else.” Knoton grinned. “Yes, I figured you would say that. He’s going to stay on Khera for a day or two and then take everyone back to Kilara. Nobody will be able to trace them there.” Delsin growled softly. “Then let’s land and take back what’s ours.” “Get strapped in. We’ll be on the ground in just a few minutes.” After their smooth landing, Delsin walked down the ramp and felt a feeling of satisfaction flowing through him at the sight of his birth planet. Tall trees formed a canopy that blocked out much of the sun while the dense undergrowth was ripe with lush foliage. There were very few flowers but shiny leaves of all shapes, sizes, and shades of green blanketed the terrain. Twisting ropes of vines wound down the rock cliffs, springing from the crevices. Etu touched his shoulder. “Listen, Brother. The forest is welcoming us home.” Delsin could hear birds calling, their wings fluttering in the heat. Being so close to the Mhatara, the air was stuffy and warm. The decay and algae warred with the scent of animal musk. The thick, stagnant air was heavy on his tongue. “What’s the plan?” asked Etu. “Let’s fan out.” Delsin looked at each of his men. “Be mindful of the natural enemies here as well as the Mkata pride. Watch your steps. Don’t hesitate to kill anyone you find. The only pride members left on Linnaeus are our enemies. But watch for our mate and ensure his safety at all costs.” He picked up a long stick and started off toward

the thick vegetation as his pride mates went in opposite directions. Etu gave a final wave as the curling mist swallowed him up. Before each step, Delsin probed the water with his walking stick. The murky water kept everything, both dangerous and benign, from view. A sudden burst of bubbles could mean a submerged log settling or the rancid breath of a beast on the hunt. He slogged through the mud, not knowing which was worse, the tension in his neck from listening to every drip and scrape or the foul air that clung to every inch of his skin and filled his mouth with the taste of death. He thought of Meredith and sighed. “Hold on, mate. Be strong. I’m coming.” **** Mer paced back and forth, stopping to yank on the iron doors with each pass. “Come on, guys. Where the hell are you? I risk my life to save your cubs, and this is the thanks I get. And if Señor Psycho is right, you didn’t even bother to truly mate me. You can’t even feel any of my pain.” He looked toward the darkened hallway when he heard footsteps. When Honaw stepped into the light, Mer scurried to the back of the cell, cowering in a corner. “Haven’t you figured out yet that it won’t work to keep hurting me? They don’t feel my pain.” “But they do, puny human. Even now, your mates make their way through the Mhatara to be by your side.” The click of the lock was loud as Honaw opened the cell door. He motioned for Mer to come out. “Come. We must prepare a special greeting.” “Delsin and Etu are here?” Mer bit his lip. “What’s Mhatara?” Honaw moved into the small cell and grabbed Mer’s arm. “The Mhatara is our natural protection.” He chuckled. “It may even kill your mates before I can.” Mer began to struggle. “No, I won’t let you use me to hurt them.”

Honaw laughed and pulled him from the cell. “You can’t stop me. Soon the Chaarta pride will cease to exist, and Preyta’s cubs will be mine. I will take a mate, and we will raise them together.” Not if I have anything to say about it. Mer stopped struggling and allowed Honaw to lead him down several corridors until they reached a large room. It made him think of a king’s royal chambers complete with a throne. Honaw pushed him into a chair just as one of his guards rushed into the room. “Alpha.” The man panted breathlessly. “It has begun.” Honaw grinned. “Excellent. Go and make sure the alpha can find his way here. If he makes it to the palace, he’s mine.” The guard bowed low and dashed off. Honaw ignored Mer and began pulling weapons from a closet in the room, arranging them on a small table. Mer’s eyes grew wide as he watched the enemy alpha. Honaw lined up several knives on the table beside his throne, strapped some type of gun to his hip, and pulled out a long, wickedly curved sword. Mer had to bite back a laugh. Does the thought of messing with my guys scare you that much? Honaw moved to the window. “Come, human. You might get to see your mate one final time.” **** Dusk stained the glistening foliage with shadow and murk. As nightfall descended, the sounds of the jungle began to ebb, and new sounds emerged. Footfalls and the rumbling growls of predators walking their hunting grounds filled the air. Delsin heard a strange noise. “Etu?” He peered between the thick, vine-choked trunks and the reaching leaves for signs of his brother. As soon as he heard a splash, he vaulted onto the nearest tree. Slimy bark provided a challenge for the treads on his boots, but he managed to make it to a creaky lower branch. He didn’t want to shift to his lion until he reached the compound. and he wanted to save his strength for the coming battle. Slowly he scanned the mist that clung to the surface of the water, watching as a slight trench disturbed the almost solid mass. Something was moving in the water, gently displacing the white curtain above it. Sweat dripped down Delsin’s back and along the sides of his body. He preferred a cat-to-cat fight instead of these games. Tired of waiting, he dropped to the ground, the mud sucking against his boots. His heartbeat fluttered at every sound and splash. Then, he heard a hissing animal cry followed by growls. The sound of paws hitting the ground had him calling the magical light. A feeling of peace washed over him as his bones reformed, his mane growing long, his claws extending. He was ready when the first of Honaw’s lions burst through the brush. **** Honaw threw back his head and laughed. “Your pride is losing, human. Soon all of Linnaeus will be mine.” He beckoned Mer closer. “Don’t you want to watch? They’re reaching the clearing now.” Honaw turned his attention back to the scene outside the window, and Mer cautiously moved closer to the table where the knives glistened in the waning light. There were several sharp blades. If I could just get my hands on one of the knives, Señor Psycho might not notice. “Come, human. I insist you watch.” When Honaw didn’t turn around, Mer grabbed the blade on the end and held it down in the folds of his tattered pants. Taking a deep breath, he moved toward the window. **** Etu silently moved toward the Mkata’s palace. He’d already put down two of Honaw’s guards. I just wish I knew how the others are

doing. He could mind speak to his brother, but he didn’t want to distract him at a crucial time. He took comfort in being able to feel his brother’s life force inside his mind. He’d know if Delsin had been killed. He pressed lower to the ground and crept through the brush, stopping when two different scents filled his nostrils. Two of Honaw’s pride were near. As he broke through the clearing, he spotted a large gray lion, his heavy mane matted and tangled. Etu glanced toward the palace and spotted Honaw and Mer in a window. Thank the Goddess he’s still alive. He dropped his shields to send his thoughts to Delsin. Brother, I’ve found our mate. He’s in an upper palace room with Honaw. Etu could feel his brother’s joy through their link. Is he unharmed, Etu? I can see no injuries from where I am, and he’s standing unassisted behind Honaw. I must go. I have a battle to win. Etu turned his attention to his appointment, closing down his mental link. The big lion snarled and moved closer. Etu crouched, letting out a tremendous roar, showing his impressive teeth. A growl behind him had him tensing. From the corner of his eye, he saw another lion. Obviously a youngster, the tawny lion prowled toward him from the left while big gray headed toward him from the right. He could hear his father’s voice in his head. Son, take down the lesser challenge fast and give all your strength to the real challenge. Etu hated to end the life of what was essentially a cub, but he knew he had no choice. The tawny lion was impatient and clearly untrained. He pivoted on his haunches and then leapt. With a twist of his head, Etu struck, his teeth sinking deep into the unprotected neck. A burst of blood bathed his tongue, hot and coppery sweet. The cub’s agonized yelp was cut off, his windpipe crushed. The mortally wounded lion stumbled and went down. Etu had turned his attention to the larger lion when he was violently thrown to the ground, the impact driving the breath from his

body with a loud whoosh. Stunned, he wheezed in a much-needed gulp of air. Sharp teeth pierced the meat of his shoulder, penetrating so deep they scraped bone. He bucked backward, dislodging the overconfident lion. A rumbling growl issued from the depths of Etu’s chest, followed quickly by a vicious baring of teeth and a rough, threatening snarl. Big Gray roared and whirled, teeth snapping impotently on thin air as Etu spun out of his reach. Etu’s jaws closed on his flank, his pelt of fur offering little protection against the sharp teeth that tore into his flesh. A savage battle erupted with raking claws and tearing teeth as they both went down in a tangle of flailing limbs and snapping jaws. It was over quickly. Etu had him penned beneath his powerful body, his jaws clamped around his neck. He viciously tore out his throat and ran toward the house. **** Honaw cursed venomously and pulled out a gun. The shadows were dark enough outside that Mer could not see clearly what had happened. “Not this time, Alpha. You’re not going to win. Those cubs will be mine.” He glanced at Mer. “Seems your mates are more powerful than I thought. One of them made it through the Mhatara, but he won’t make it to you.” Raising his arm, he took aim out the window. Mer stiffened, feeling a sudden coldness hitting at the core of his heart. Slowly shaking his head, he raised his hand, his fingers gripped tightly around the handle of the knife. “No!” He plunged the knife deep into Honaw’s back just as the gun discharged. **** Delsin sighed in relief when he heard Mer was alive. leapt toward him, roaring when Delsin batted him away with one paw. When the animal managed to grab Delsin’s mane, he whirled around, sending his head into the smaller lion, sending it flying a good ten feet away. As Delsin turned away, he felt the animal land on his back. He could feel claws raking his skin, digging in deep, probably drawing blood. He rolled, dislodging his opponent, and pounced. He could feel the flesh tear from his adversary’s neck. Panting heavily, he took off at a brisk run for the palace. “Mate, I’m coming.” **** A loud roar broke from Honaw as the knife pierced his back. Mer wasted no time in pulling the blade out and plunging it in again. Honaw wheezed in a breath and turned slowly, a look of shock on his face, his eyes almost bulging from his head. Mer managed to pull the knife out one more time. The large man was having difficulty breathing. Mer knew he must have punctured one of his lungs. But shifters heal quickly, and he didn’t think he’d done enough damage to kill him. Before Honaw could raise his arm holding the gun, Mer stabbed the knife into his chest and quickly moved back. The alpha stumbled toward him, blood dripping down his arm as he tried to pull the blade out. “Not you. Not a human. I can’t be taken down by a mere human.” He growled low and began to raise the gun. “If I can’t have my mate, you can’t have yours.” He took aim just as a large lion rushed by Mer. It tackled Honaw and ripped out his throat. Whimpering, Mer felt his limbs going weak as he backed up against the wall, trying to make his body as small as possible. He was sure he was about to die. Then, a blue light filled the room. As he watched, the lion morphed into Delsin, bones popping and reshaping. Within moments he stood by the window, naked.

“Delsin!” Mer’s voice was barely a squeak as he ran across the room and threw himself into Delsin’s arms. Before he could say anything else, another lion came racing through the door. Mer tensed, struggling to get out of his mate’s arms. Delsin ran his finger down Mer’s cheek. “Easy, mate. That’s Etu.” The blue light appeared again, and Etu stood smiling, a trickle of blood flowing from a wound on his hip. “Are you hurt, my mate?” “I’m fine, but you guys look like you need a hospital.” Etu and Delsin laughed as the three of them joined in a group hug. “Did Señor Psycho find the cubs?” Delsin snorted and kissed his cheek. “No, you saved them, mate. You saved our pride.” “Can I see them?” asked Mer. Etu rubbed his cheek against Mer’s hair. “They’re back on Khera with Zintssar and his family.” He stepped back and offered his hand. “Come on, mate. We’ll head back so we can all be together.” Delsin nodded. “Let Knoton and Hakan know we’re taking the small shuttle back. Have them clean up here and join us as soon as they can. We’ll pack up and come back here together.” “Okay! I’ll meet you at the shuttle shortly.” Etu placed a kiss on Mer’s head and walked away. Mer studied Delsin. “You need a doctor.” “No! I just need to shift a few times, and everything will be better.” Mer narrowed his eyes, crossed his arms over his chest and tapped his foot. “Well?” Delsin chuckled, and the blue light appeared. Mer shaded his eyes from the glare and squeaked girlishly when a rough tongue scraped over his arm. He was magnificent in his lion form. Standing nearly five feet at the shoulder, and a good seven feet long, he was intimidating. The reddish-brown hair of his body clashed with the nearly blond, bushy hair of his mane. His long tail ended in a black, hairy tuft. Mer rubbed his head, his fingers threading through the

heavy mane. The large cat purred, the vibrations traveling up Mer’s arm. The blue light suddenly appeared, and Mer found his hand on a naked man. All of his bruises were gone. He felt his cheeks warm as his cock hardened inside his pants. Delsin grinned and pulled him closer. “No embarrassment, mate. Let’s get moving. The faster we get back, the faster the three of us can be together.” Mer frowned and tried to pull away. Why do they keep calling me mate? **** Delsin put his arm around Mer’s shoulders and saw him flinch. He leaned away and studied his face. “What’s wrong, mate?” His blush deepened. “Nothing, really. I’ll be fine.” Delsin frowned, took Mer’s arm firmly, and turned him around. His breath caught and a deep rumbling growl escaped. His mate’s shirt was in ribbons, the skin underneath striped in ragged, weeping cuts.” He cursed colorfully and pulled Mer’s face so he could look into his eyes. “What did he do to you?” Mer looked down at the floor. “Chained me up and used a whip on me.” Growling, Delsin checked his wrists and then dropped to his knees. He pulled up Mer’s pants leg and cursed at the distinctive bruises and abrasions left by leg shackles. Taking a deep breath, he rose to his feet and put both large hands on each side of Mer’s face and stared into his eyes. “He did this to you because of us. Is this all he did?” Mer glanced away. “That’s all, Delsin. He never laid a hand on me. I got the impression he wouldn’t dirty his hands on a human.” Delsin closed his eyes briefly and then smiled. “Let’s get to the shuttle. Etu and I have just the thing to take away your pain.” “You have medicine that will fix this? Cool! Will it hurt?”
Meredith’s Pride
83
Delsin laughed. “I can honestly say you’ll enjoy getting this medicine.” His little mate would be surprised when they licked him all over to heal his wounds. Their saliva had healing properties. Mer bounced from foot to foot. “What are we waiting for? Let’s go.”

Chapter 7 Mer accepted a glass of juice from Delsin and sank back onto the couch. He didn’t think there was one inch of his battered body that didn’t ache. Etu and Delsin had some kind of problem with the shuttle when they flew home, so they never got around to giving him their special medicine to help him heal. “Were the cubs happy to see you?” Delsin rubbed his hand over Mer’s head. “Yeah! They were all smiles and climbing all over me. It was a great feeling.” “I’m glad they’ve taken to you so well. It’ll make our trip home easier.” Mer worried his lip between his teeth. “Are we really going back to that planet to live?” “Don’t worry, mate. You only saw a small portion of the planet. Our home is on the other side, in the mountains, and it’s beautiful. I know you’re going to be very happy there. And it’ll be completely safe because the other pride is gone.” “All of them are dead?” “No, but the ones left didn’t want to stay around without their alpha. We offered to let them join us, but they declined.” “Where will they—” “Alpha!” Knoton burst into the room, a wide grin on his face. He bowed low to Delsin. “Congratulations, my Alpha, on slaying the enemy pride leader.” “Is everything okay now?”
Meredith’s Pride

“Everything is fantastic, Alpha. Zintssar sent help with the cleaning up, so we finished early. The biggest miracle is what we found in the basement of Honaw’s palace.” Delsin glanced at Mer and then back at Knoton. “What did you find?” “Mates! Some of the women from our pride.” Delsin’s eyes widened, and he took a step forward. “Explain.” “When we searched the cells in the basement we found Athaw, Hula, and Misko. When we questioned Honaw’s man Tokala, he said they’d taken the women to make sure the cubs would be cooperative. It was Honaw’s plan to have the women mate to his own men and raise all the cubs as Mkata. They’ve been prisoners there since the first attack. After I was wounded in the last battle, I didn’t take the time to count bodies. There was no one left alive so I just thought everyone had been killed. It never occurred to me they’d taken our women as prisoners.” Knoton bowed lower. “Forgive me, Alpha. It’s my fault they suffered this long.” “There’s nothing to forgive, my friend. You acted correctly, especially since you were injured yourself. The important thing is we have them back. Are they unharmed?” “Nothing but some bruises, and they were starving. I guess he didn’t feed them much.” Mer watched a light begin to glow in Delsin’s eyes as he discussed the condition of the women with Knoton. If the mates were coming back, where did that leave him? They might be calling him mate, but from what Honaw had told him, they weren’t really mated. “This is wonderful news!” Delsin clapped his hands together. “Why is it wonderful?” Mer could have bitten his tongue out when he asked his question. He hadn’t meant to say it out loud. “Because Hula is mother to Nodin, and Misko is mother to Jacy and Yuma. That only leaves Taima and Keme without a mother. I will only be personally responsible for my brother’s children.” “What about Athaw? Isn’t she their mother?” asked Mer.
86
Missy Martine
Delsin shook his head. “Preyta was their mother, and the female alpha of our pride.” Mer walked over and put his arms around Delsin, giving him a hug. “That is good news. I’m glad everyone is okay.” Delsin put his arm around Mer’s shoulders and turned him to face Knoton. “Our mate took down the alpha and incapacitated him before we arrived.” He spent several minutes relaying the story Mer had told him about stabbing Honaw. Knoton’s eyes grew wide as he bowed slightly toward Mer. “That’s amazing, Mer. You have the heart and soul of a pride mate.” Mer could feel his face heating and moved to stand behind Delsin. He looked up when Hakan walked through the door. Delsin moved to clasp his pride mate by the arm. “Welcome home. Where are the females?” “Etu is guiding them from the landing strip. He wanted me to come ahead and let you know they’d be here shortly in case you needed to make ready for their arrival.” “You and Knoton get the cubs dressed and bring them out here. The mothers will be anxious to reunite with their children. Then, after everyone is fed and cleaned up, we’ll have a pride meeting and make plans for our return to Linnaeus.” An hour later Mer bounced Keme on his shoulder, trying to get a belch from the baby who’d just finished a bottle of milk. Taima happily stomped around the room, banging two sticks together like a drum major in a Thanksgiving Day Macy’s parade. The cubs’ reunion with their mothers had been tearful and blessedly short. The women had wanted to take their children somewhere private to count toes, or whatever it was that women did to make sure their babies were in one piece. Delsin had asked Mer to get Keme and Taima ready for dinner while he had a meeting with the men Zintssar sent to help out. The dinner was to be in honor of the Arridians, and Mer was taking special care to make the cubs look their best.

Keme expelled her excess gas with all the grace of a barnyard pig. Mer chuckled, and cuddled her close. “Okay, you guys ready?” Taima looked up, babbled for a moment, and then headed for the door. Chuckling, Mer took his hand and started down the hall. As he neared the open door of the nursery, he stopped. He could hear the women talking. He’d been introduced earlier when everyone first arrived. The females were polite but distant and distrustful, holding their babies well away from him. The one introduced as Athaw tried to take Keme and Taima, but they screamed bloody murder and reached for Mer. When she persisted, Delsin had growled and told her to back down. She’d looked alarmed and backed down, but shot Mer a murderous look. He knew he shouldn’t be eavesdropping, but he couldn’t seem to make himself move away. He listened to the women. “The way I see it, Misko, you should mate with Knoton. He clearly shows a preference for you.” Athaw’s voice was loud and distinct. “Whatever,” Misko said. “He’s a fine man. I certainly have no desire for anything alpha. Give me a nice nobody to spend the rest of my life with.” “Hula, you should mate with Hakan. I’ve seen the way he looks at you when he thinks no one is looking.” Hula sobbed. “I’m not sure I want another mate. Ours have only been gone a few weeks.” “It doesn’t matter,” said Athaw. “The pride will be stronger with all of us mated instead of single lions.” Hula sniffed. “I guess you’re right. I’ll do whatever is necessary for the pride.” “Good.” “What about you, Athaw?” asked Hula. “Since Preyta didn’t survive, I’ll mate with the alpha brothers and be mother to Keme and Taima.” “You’re forgetting Mer,” said Misko. “Knoton told us they sent for Mer to be their mate and the cubs have clearly bonded with him.”
88
Missy Martine
Athaw laughed. “He’s not their mate. I looked, and there’s no mate bite.” Mer took a step closer to the room. What the hell is a mate bite? “Maybe not, but the intention was there when they brought him here all the way from Earth. I can’t believe Delsin is the type of alpha that would just throw him away now that they have females available to them.” Athaw snorted. “It doesn’t matter. It’s the alpha’s responsibility to replenish their pride with cubs, and they can’t do that with Mer for a mate.” Hula laughed. “You’re dreaming. Delsin will never send Mer away. I’ve seen the way he looks at him. Both he and Etu look like they could eat the man up, and I don’t mean for dinner.” Mer frowned, and urged Taima down the hall toward the living room. He didn’t want to get caught outside their room. When he walked into the living room, Knoton was busy bringing in more chairs. “Hey, Knoton, can I ask you a question?” “Of course you can.” Mer placed Keme on the couch and barricaded her in the corner with pillows. “What’s a mating bite?” Knoton gave a bark of laughter, and then scratched his head. “What brought that on?” “I heard the women talking, and I’d not heard the term before.” Knoton shrugged. “When two lions want to mate, they have sex and bite each other in the shoulder to exchange a little blood. This seals the spiritual bond, plus leaves the scent of one mate on the other, basically claiming them in a way the whole community can recognize. It’s a pretty sacred thing.” Mer winced, blinking back the moisture in his eyes. Neither Etu or Delsin had bitten him during sex. Athaw’s right. I’m not really their mate. And with the women here, I never will be. “Um, I’m not feeling well. Can you watch the babies for Delsin?”
Meredith’s Pride

Knoton frowned, glancing down at Mer. “I’m happy to watch the cubs. Do you want me to get Delsin or Etu for you?” “No, that’s okay. I’m just gonna lay down until dinner.” Mer turned and walked back down the hall to his room, shutting the door behind him. He sank down on the bed and wiped the dampness from his eyes. Maybe I should just cut my losses and go back to Earth before they send me back. He jumped when someone tapped on the door. Etu stuck his head inside the room and smiled. “Knoton said he thought you were upset about something. What’s wrong?” Taking a shaky breath, Mer stood and walked to the door. “Will the women become mates to the men here now?” Etu frowned and stepped into the room, closing the door. He shrugged. “Probably, but nobody would force them to do anything they didn’t want to do. They’ll probably want to mate because it’s more protection for their cubs.” He smiled. “At least you won’t have to keep looking after all those little furry butts.” He walked over and put his arms around Mer, leaning close to whisper into his ear. “That will give you more time for the things you like.” Bending, he kissed him, sucking first his top lip and then his bottom, all the while urging him back toward the bed. Mer felt the mattress touch the back of his legs and groaned. Oh, God. Maybe he’s finally going to give me a mating bite. **** Etu put his finger in Mer’s belt loop and pulled their hips together. “You’re too tense, little man.” He gently turned Mer around, his hands coming up to massage his shoulders. After a few minutes he leaned in and began to nuzzle the back of Mer’s neck. “You smell so good,” he whispered and then rubbed their cheeks together. “I want you.” Mer wiggled in his arms, turning around to face him.

Etu cupped the back of Mer’s head, pressing their mouths together and teasing the seam with his tongue. He licked at his lips, slipping his tongue inside when they opened, quickly becoming lost in the taste of his mate. Groaning, his tongue and lips traveled over Mer’s chin, licking and sucking. Etu felt the sting of his mate’s teeth on his chest and gasped, knowing there’d be a purpling mark there. It would disappear by morning, but for one happy moment he felt as if his mate had marked him. Etu ran his hands up Mer’s sides and around his back. His hands slid beneath the loose shirt to feel the supple movement of his muscles and knead the tight, smooth skin. Etu’s fingers grabbed the hem and pulled the shirt over Mer’s head to reveal a finely sculpted torso of warm flesh with a light dusting of hair. Leaning forward, Mer pressed their bodies together, licking just under Etu’s ear. Burrowing closer, he rubbed his face against Etu’s chest, rocking their lower bodies in a rhythmic wave. Etu stroked Mer’s smooth stomach and then placed his hands on his chest and drew them slowly down his body. He turned it into a sensual massage, rubbing, kneading the soft, warm skin. Bending, he paused to lick the dusky nipples that had already hardened into tight little points. He inhaled Mer’s sweet scent and gave his ass a little squeeze. A surge of hunger made his mouth water, his teeth lengthening in preparation of marking his mate. Suddenly they were grinding against each other, both making sounds of need. “Need you, Etu. Please.” Mer’s hands massaged Etu’s ass, his fingers working the seam of his pants into his crack. Etu growled, capturing Mer’s hands in one of his own and holding them still behind his back. Guiding his other hand down his body, he began to undo Mer’s pants. The room was filled with the rasp of the zipper sliding down. Turning, he pushed Mer down onto the mattress. “Lift your ass.” When Mer lifted his butt, he worked his jeans down his legs and left them in a pile on the floor. In a few short moments he’d stripped himself and crawled over Mer’s body, letting their cocks

slide together as he explored his neck. Growling softly, he slid his hand down to wrap their cocks together, stroking them with a firm movement. The feel of his mate’s cock against his was driving him mad. Not wanting to lose control, Etu pulled back and flipped Mer onto his stomach. He licked his shoulder and squeezed his ass cheek. “This ass was made for my cock.” “Yes, it’s yours. Please, Etu. I need you now.” “Patience, little man.” He licked the small of his back, slowly moving lower to nibble at the smooth globes. “Your skin is like silk.” Mer groaned. “Stop teasing me.” “Patience.” He nudged Mer’s legs wide and licked the inside of his thigh all the way to his foot. When the small man’s hips arched, he slipped his fingers into the crease of his ass and let his fingertips play over the taut entrance. Using his thumbs to part the firm cheeks in his hands, he lowered his head and licked down his crease, swirling his tongue around the puckered skin. Mer moaned and jerked his hips when his tongue connected with the outer edges of his sensitive hole. Etu licked his finger then gently pressed into Mer’s hole, a little at a time, until he was knuckle deep. His mate wiggled, pushing his little ass toward the invading hand. “I feel like I’m in heat around you, Mer.” “But that’s a good thing, right?” Mer panted. “Very good.” Etu pulled his finger out and grabbed his own cock. He coated his fingers in his natural lubrication and then placed two of them at the tight hole, pushing in. He shivered, groaning harshly when Mer’s ass muscles clenched tight. “More, please.” “You’ve got such a tight little hole. So damn good.” Etu sent a third finger forward to stretch the opening, sliding them in and out a couple of times before twisting and turning them searching for Mer’s sweet spot. He gave the smooth gland inside an experimental stroke. “Holy shit! Do it again.”
92
Missy Martine
Chuckling, he obeyed, caressing the spot over and over as he stretched the tight ring. “Please, Etu. I need to feel you moving inside me.” “Relax, love. I’ll give you what you want.” He cupped the cheeks of Mer’s ass and hoisted him up. “Get your knees underneath you. I want your ass in the air.” With a whimper, Mer got to his knees, offering his beautiful ass. Etu leaned close and licked the rim of his ear. “I’m going to bury my cock as deep inside you as I can.” Mer shuddered, lowering his head to the mattress. Etu lifted his mate’s ass and aimed his cock at the tight little entrance before him. Taking a deep breath, he thrust forward, burying himself to the hilt in one smooth motion, his shaft stretching Mer even farther than his fingers had. “Are you okay?” “Yes!” Mer gasped. “Don’t stop.” Etu curled his fingers into Mer’s hair and pulled out only to shove back in again. Animalistic growls came from his throat as he latched onto Mer’s neck, pushing his cock even deeper. His beast roared, pushing to be let out to claim their mate. Mine! We must mate him now. Don’t wait, do it now! **** Mer felt the burn for a second, but soon the pain was gone, the feeling turning to pleasure. He moaned, feeling the cock stretching his ass wide. By the time Etu was all the way in, they were both panting and shaking. Etu angled Mer’s hips up and pushed back in, his balls slapping against Mer’s ass. “You like it hard and fast?” “God, yes.” Mer pushed his hips back. “Harder, please harder.” Etu fucked Mer fast and hard, driving into him with force, brushing his fingers across his nut sac. Nothing had ever felt so good. His hand wrapped around his cock and set a rhythm of slow, firm strokes. Mer cried out when his fingers slid over the tip.
Meredith’s Pride

Mer felt a throbbing in his balls as they drew up tight against his body. “I’m gonna…” Both men’s muscles tensed and tightened as they came, screaming and straining. As hot semen shot over Mer’s stomach, he stilled, letting out a guttural yell. Etu tightened his arms around Mer’s stomach, his teeth latching onto his shoulder, and howled. Warmth flooded his ass as Etu’s teeth tightened painfully. Suddenly, Etu released his shoulder and growled. For a moment his arms tightened, and then he moved back. Mer felt his legs and arms give out as Etu slid from his body. Together they fell to the mattress, Etu pulling him close against his chest. He pressed their lips together, twining their tongues in a mating dance. “Damn!” Etu groaned. “That was incredible.” Exhausted, Mer closed his eyes, held tight in his lover’s arms. He started to bite me, but he just couldn’t go through with it. He doesn’t want me for a real mate. Etu pressed a kiss on Mer’s head. He pulled away and sat on the side of the bed. “I’m sorry, love, but I’ve got to go. Delsin is calling me.” “I didn’t hear anything.” “He’s mind speaking to me. Family members and mates can hear each other psychically even from great distances.” He cupped his hand on Mer’s jaw. “You need to hurry and dress so you can join us in the living room. It’s going to be a hell of a celebration with our longtime enemy defeated. We’ll be able to return to our home now.” “I’d like to know more about your home. I mean, if I’m going to live there with you.” Etu bent and placed a brief kiss on his lips. “Delsin and I will tell you all about Linnaeus later. We’ve got to hurry now. They’re waiting on us.” He quickly pulled on his clothes and walked to the door. “Come on, mate. Get a move on. We can’t keep our alpha waiting.” Mer stood up and reached for his jeans. “Just where do I fit in with this new home?” he mumbled.

**** Delsin paced back and forth in his office. He opened his mind to speak to his brother. What the hell is taking you so long? I want us to stand together in front of the pride. Back off, Brother, I’m enjoying our mate. Delsin snickered. Figures you started without me. Don’t bite him yet. We need to let him get over the trauma of being held hostage and let him get to know us better before we overwhelm his mind with our presence. Damn you, Delsin. I’ll obey, but I don’t like it. He’d be safer with the bond complete. Besides, my beast is fighting me for control. I won’t be able to hold him off much longer. It won’t be much longer, I promise. I’m having the same trouble with my lion. He wants to finish the mating more than anything. I can’t blame him. I feel the same way. I was very unhappy to think we’d have to abandon him in order to have cubs for the pride. Finding the females freed us both, brother. We can follow our hearts now, and let our beasts have their way. I’m happy, too, brother. We’re getting dressed and we’ll be there soon. Delsin looked out the window and smiled. “I can’t wait until we can get our little mate alone tonight.” Sitting down, he quickly sent off a message to Zintssar letting him know his men would be home the next day. Now let’s see what we can do to get this party over with. When he walked into the living room, Hula and Misko were sitting in the floor playing with the cubs. “Alpha!” Hula picked up Nodin and smiled. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you watched over and protected my baby.” “That goes double for me.” Misko smiled as she tickled Yuma’s belly. “It was my honor to keep them safe, ladies.” He looked up as his mate walked into the room.

Mer walked toward the cubs, giving them a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Jacy was the first to notice him. She squealed and began toddling toward him, followed closely by Taima and Nodin. “Hey, guys.” Mer dropped to the floor and crossed his legs, his smile brightening when the three cubs pounced on him. He hugged them close, letting his hand brush over each of their heads. Misko snickered. She stood and laid Yuma in his lap. “You might as well say hello to this big boy. I think the babies are happy to see you.” “Babies know who love them.” Delsin stepped over to the crib and picked up Keme. He walked over and laid the tiny baby in Mer’s arms and smiled. “I think she missed you the most.” Mer blushed and cuddled the small child to his chest. “They just like me because they know I’m a sucker, and they can get away with murder when I’m watching them.” Jacy crawled up his leg and patted his cheek. “What in the world is going on in here?” Athaw strolled into the room, an ugly scowl on her face. “The cubs need to be rebonding with their mothers.” She reached toward Mer with her arms outstretched. “Give me the baby.” Taima morphed into his beast and growled, spitting, his hair standing on end. “What the hell?” Delsin took a step closer, biting back a laugh. Athaw clenched her jaw, the vein in her forehead throbbing visibly. She moved closer, pointing her finger at the small cub. “Change back right now.” Taima growled again, reaching out with his clawed paw, swiping at her hand. Hula laughed. “I don’t think he likes you, Athaw. He’s protecting his sister.” Mer rubbed behind the small cub’s ears. “Come on, Taima. Change back for me.” Immediately the small ball of fur morphed into his human skin, cuddling his cheek against Mer’s hand.

“Oh my Goddess.” Misko dropped into a chair. “They’ve bonded with Mer.” Delsin looked at the incredulous faces of the pride’s females and laughed inwardly. This will make it easier for them to accept him as the alpha’s mate. They know the cubs don’t trust just anyone. He glanced at Athaw and froze. The look on her face was pure rage. He could hear her rushing loud breaths as her chest heaved. With a quick, decisive stride she left the room. I’m going to have to keep my eye on her. She’s trouble, just looking for a place to explode. “Hey, everybody.” Knoton stood in the doorway. “Dinner’s ready. Hakan went to call the Arridians in.” Delsin moved toward the door. “Let’s move to the dining room. I had Hakan put blankets and pillows on the floor for the babies to play while we eat.” He stood back and let the women move from the room. When Mer walked past him, he slipped his arm around his waist and planted a kiss on the top of his head. “I’m looking forward to spending time with you later,” he whispered into his ear. He frowned when Mer smiled and moved away, following the women into the dining room. Everyone had taken a seat when the Arridians walked in, followed by Hakan. They took their seats and the cubs began to fret, their whimpers soon turning into full-fledged cries. Misko and Hula got up and went to the babies, cuddling them in an effort to get them quiet. “What’s wrong with the little ones?” asked Knoton. Mer glanced at the Arridian guards and sighed. “They might be feeling a little tense around people they don’t know.” He pushed back his chair, walked to the corner, and dropped down onto the blanket. Immediately the cubs quieted, moving close to his small frame. He wrapped his arms around the toddlers, letting them bury their faces against his skin. “They feel safe with him.” Delsin watched for a moment and then walked over and knelt down. “Do you want to bring them to the table?”

Mer shook his head. “They’d be even more uncomfortable to put them closer to the Arridians. I’ll just sit here with them. I’m not really hungry anyway. I’ll still be able to listen in, and the kids will be quiet.” “But I want you to—” “I’m staying here, Delsin. Go eat your dinner, and I’ll entertain the babies.” Delsin stood and sighed. He returned to the table to find Athaw had taken the seat Mer had vacated. For a moment he considered ordering her to move and then glanced at the Arridians. They were watching him closely and he didn’t want stories of their personal problems making their way back to Zintssar. Rubbing the bridge of his nose with two fingers, he took his seat and smiled. Things are working out well, brother. Look how the women have paired off with the men. I think we’ll be celebrating other matings besides ours before long. Delsin glanced around the table. Knoton had moved his chair closer to Misko and was currently whispering in her ear. Hakan was filling Hula’s plate and gazing at her lovingly. Delsin nodded at Etu and turned to the Arridians. “We can never thank you enough for the assistance you gave in helping us to recover our mate. We’re in your debt, and if you ever need us, all you have to do is ask.” The leader of the Arridians bowed his head. “It was our pleasure, Alpha.” “Okay, everyone.” Knoton walked in carrying several dishes of food. “Don’t be shy, just dig in.” Delsin looked up and started when he felt Athaw’s hand on his thigh. He turned to look at her and growled softly. She grinned slyly and pulled her hand away, letting it slide across his thigh and digging in her nails. What the hell is going on, Brother? Etu, I’m trying hard not to kill Athaw in front of our guests, but it’s getting harder to ignore her.

Etu chuckled in his head. I hope it’s not getting “harder” to ignore her. Delsin choked, covering a laugh. Not to worry. Nothing at all is hard with her near. He glanced over at Mer and felt his breath catch. From his place on the floor he could see clearly under the table, and his eyes seemed glued to Delsin’s legs. He saw Athaw’s hand on my thigh. He tried to give his mate a reassuring smile, but he could see the sadness in the small man’s eyes and feel the desolation rolling off him in waves. I can’t let him continue to suffer. Etu, I’m going to claim Mer tonight. Are you in or not? I was ready to take him without you, Brother. As soon as our guests leave and the pride is settled in their rooms, we can claim him. Agreed. I’ll meet you at his door, and we’ll go in together. I want this settled before we leave for Linnaeus. I’m ready to go home.

Chapter 8 Mer seethed inwardly as he watched Athaw paw Delsin. He doesn’t seem to mind. He’s been smiling and talking to her like all is well. If he’s decided he wants her skanky ass, then there really is no reason for me to stay here. If Etu wanted to mate with me, he’d have done it earlier. I don’t have any place here now. “I bet you’re anxious for a break.” Misko bent and picked up Yuma. “It was really nice of you to take care of the cubs while we had dinner.” Mer took a deep breath and looked up at the young woman’s kind eyes. “It was my pleasure. I really enjoy being with the little tykes.” “I can tell they really love you.” She bit her lip and glanced over toward the table where the others were getting to their feet, and then back at Mer. “If you wouldn’t mind a little advice…” Mer cocked his head and studied her for a moment. “Sure. What is it?” “Don’t take everything at face value. To know the truth of any situation, you have to delve deeper. Don’t just automatically trust your eyes. Sometimes things aren’t as they seem.” She gave him a small smile, touched his shoulder, and then grabbed Jacy by the hand and walked away. After Misko walked away, Mer stood and helped Nodin to his feet. He watched as the toddler made his way to his mother, laughing up at her open arms. She scooped him up, nodded at Mer, and then hurried from the room. Sighing, Mer held Keme over his shoulder and took Taima’s hand. He walked them out onto the front porch for some fresh air. There, in the darkness, he relaxed, breathing in deeply.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Mer flinched at the sound of Athaw’s voice. He felt Taima move closer, his little arms sliding around Mer’s leg. “I’m sorry. Did you need something?” Athaw walked around to stand next to the porch railing. She narrowed her eyes and gave him a small smile. “I just wanted to tell you how much I admire how you handle the cubs. They obviously love you, and you’re very good with them. We’re all so grateful that you took such good care of them.” Mer frowned, and hugged Keme closer when she started to fret. “That’s okay. It was my pleasure. They’re great little kids.” She took a step closer and lowered her voice, laying one hand on Mer’s arm. “I’ve discussed it with Delsin, and he agrees that the cubs would suffer if they lost you now. We want you to stay on like a nanny to these babies, plus any future ones that he and I might have. We can guarantee you’ll always have a place in our home.” Mer blinked back tears and turned away from her triumphant expression. They want me to be an employee. Athaw leaned back, and looked up at the sky. “It’s a shame they made the mistake when they sent for you.” “What are you talking about?” “Hakan explained that Delsin had given him the picture out of Galactic Nuptial’s catalog, but didn’t see where it said you were a male. He said your long brown hair made you look like an attractive young woman. He was pretty shocked when you got off the shuttle.” Mer buried his face in Keme’s shoulder. Could it be true? He thought back to the shock on Hakan’s face when they met on Earth. “You don’t have to give me an answer right away, but we’ll need one in the morning. We’re returning to our home, and if you don’t want the job, the Arridians have agreed to take you back to Kilara so you can get the shuttle back to Earth. There’s one in just four days’ time.” She straightened and moved toward the door. “I guess I’d better get inside. Delsin will be wondering where I am.”

Mer shuddered, taking a deep breath before trying to move. He took the children back to their room and quickly got them into their beds. Kissing them good-night, he left and went in search of Hakan. He found him in the kitchen. “Hey, man.” “Hello, Mer. What can I do for you?” Mer shrugged. “Nothing, really. I was just thinking about our meeting. It must have been a real shock for you when I turned out to be a man instead of the woman you were expecting.” Hakan gave a slow laugh and sagged against the wall. “Yes, it was quite a shock at first, and then I just figured Delsin knew what he wanted. You should have seen his face when I was explaining after we got here. I thought he’d explode.” Mer smiled, laughed at all the appropriate places, but his heart was breaking. In the short time he’d been with the shape-shifters, he’d grown to love them, and now he’d have to give them up. They hadn’t wanted a male mate at all. “Mer, may I speak with you?” Mer turned and nodded at Hula. “Of course. What can I do for you?” “I just wanted to thank you for taking such good care of my son. I’ll always be grateful he had someone showing him love and affection while I was away.” “It was my pleasure, dear lady. If you’ll excuse me, I’d like to go and talk with the Arridians. I’m fascinated with their culture, and I’d like to know more about them.” Without waiting for her reply, Mer walked off. He approached the tall Arridian that appeared to be guarding the door. “Do you want something, human?” “One of the women said you’d be willing to let me go with you when you leave for Kilara so I can get a shuttle back to Earth.” The man was quiet for a moment. “Yes, that is acceptable. We will be leaving in approximately one hour. Can you be ready?”

The heavy pressure in Mer’s chest made it difficult to breathe. “Yes, I’ll be at your shuttle in less than an hour.” “If you’re uncomfortable traveling at night through the forest, you can meet me outside in a half hour and I will escort you.” Mer thought back to his trip through the forest and quickly nodded his head. “I’ll be there.” He turned and started down the hall, stopping when he spotted Delsin headed his way. “There you are. I’ve been looking for you. Is everything okay?” “Sure, I’m just tired and thought I’d go lie down.” Delsin smiled and winked. “It’s a good thing. You’re going to need your strength. We’re all heading home in the morning. I want to get the cubs back as soon as possible. It’s easier to protect them on our own planet.” “I understand.” He’s already talking like I’ve accepted their nanny position. He looked up at Delsin, memorizing his face. Taking a deep breath he smiled. “I’m very happy for you, that you defeated your enemy and found your family.” Delsin’s head tilted to the side, his brows drawing together, and then he smiled. “Family is everything.” He kissed Mer’s forehead. “I’ll see you later.” Mer nodded, walked down the hall to his room, and went inside. He packed a small bag, leaving everything else. He didn’t know how large the shuttle was, so he just took enough for a few days. The rest didn’t matter. He closed up his bag and sneaked out the side door, being careful to avoid everyone in the house. The Arridian was waiting for him at the edge of the forest. He nodded at the tall, silent man and followed him into the trees. **** Delsin followed the Arridians to the door. “Travel safe, my friends. Tell Zintssar I will contact him when we’re safely back on

Linnaeus.” He watched as they disappeared into the forest and then turned back to say good night to his pride. “Wait,” Knoton said. “We wish to speak with you, Alpha.” “What is it?” Knoton took Misko’s hand and pulled her forward. “I formally want to ask your permission to mate with Misko.” Hakan moved near, dragging a blushing Hula behind him. “I wish to formally ask your permission to mate with Hula.” Delsin smiled. They were pairing off just like he thought they would. “Do the females have any objections to the matings?” Misko smiled and put her hand on Knoton’s cheek. “No, Alpha. I have no objections.” “And you, Hula?” “No, Alpha. I think it’s in the best interest of the pride for us to be mated.” “Very well.” The floor vibrated underneath his feet as the Arridian’s shuttle took off for home. “Let’s open a bottle of wine to celebrate all the wonderful matings of our pride.” “I’ll get it.” Knoton kissed Misko’s hand and walked toward the kitchen. Athaw walked into the room, her eyes sparkling, practically bouncing on her toes. She ambled over to stand next to Delsin, placing her hand on his arm. She leaned in close to whisper. “We could make this celebration complete and announce our mating as well.” “What?” “I’m the only female left. You and Etu will have to take me and give me cubs to keep the pride alive.” “Are you crazy?” Etu walked up and pulled her hand off Delsin’s arm. “We’ll never mate with you no matter how few cubs the pride has. We already have a mate.” Athaw’s body tensed as her temper soared. Nostrils flaring, she stomped from the room.

“Okay.” Delsin looked to the pride and saw expressions of sympathy on the females’ faces. “What say we get this party rocking?” He moved to take a glass of wine from Knoton. “And just so you know, we’re celebrating Etu’s and my mating as well. We’re taking Meredith as our mate.” Hula and Misko exchanged a look, and then Hula stepped forward, raising her glass. “We wish you long life and love with your chosen mate, Alpha. May the goddess bless you with many years together.” Delsin and Etu raised their glasses. “May the goddess bless you with many years together and give you long life and love with your chosen mates.” Delsin took a drink and then glanced at Etu. “Pride mates, it’s time for us to claim our mate. We’ll see you all in the morning. We want to get an early start on our trip home.” He nodded at Etu. Let’s claim our mate, Brother. They made their way down the hall and tapped lightly on the door. Delsin put his ear to the wood. “I don’t hear him.” Etu pushed him aside. “I don’t smell him.” He threw open the door, and they walked inside. “Where can he be?” Delsin walked over and looked in the closet. “He has clothes here.” “I’m going to shift and see if I can scent him.” The bright blue light filled the room as he changed into his lion. He sniffed around and moved to the door, looking back over his shoulder. Delsin called the magic and transformed into his lion. His mate’s scent filled his senses. He followed Etu out the door and down the hall. When they reached the forest, he roared. His scent joined one of the Arridians here. Etu rooted around on the ground. They went off into the woods together. Let’s track them. He took off with Delsin right behind him. When they reached the landing platform, both men morphed back into their human forms.

Delsin growled. “His scent ends here. He left with the Arridians. Why would he do that? Why would he leave us?” Etu paced back and forth and then stopped, raising his gaze to Delsin. “This has something to do with Athaw. She’s been downright hostile to Mer since we’ve been back. He asked me a lot of questions about her being mother to Chayton’s cubs.” “He saw her hand on my thigh at dinner tonight.” Delsin started toward the house. “Come on. We’re going to find out if she knows where he’s gone.” Athaw was lounging on her bed, nude, when they burst through her door. She gave them a sly grin. “It’s about time you came around.” Delsin growled, yanked her up off the bed and held her against the wall, his fangs exposed. “What do you know about our mate leaving?” “I’ve seen no mate marks. You don’t have a mate yet.” Delsin shook her, and then placed his teeth against her throat, biting down enough to bring a drop of blood. Etu moved closer. “Tell us what you know, or we’ll end you here and now. He’s our mate, and Delsin will go into blood lust if you’re not careful.” Her face turned ashen, her hands twisting together. “I offered him a job, but he didn’t want it.” Etu frowned. “What job?” “I said he could be our nanny if he stuck around. If he didn’t want it, the Arridians said they would take him back to Kilara and he could catch the Earth shuttle there.” She swallowed hard and gave Etu a sickly smile. “You might as well mate me since you can’t have your little Earth toy anymore.” Delsin dropped her to the floor, shifted, and roared, his fury almost taking away his control. “What’s going on?” Knoton rushed into the room with Misko right behind him.

Etu collapsed on the foot of the bed. “Athaw managed to run Mer off with her lies. He was on the shuttle with the Arridians when they left.” Hula moved into the room, her hand clasped tightly in Hakan’s. “What are you going to do about it? It was pretty obvious that man loves you.” Delsin roared, forced his beast back and then shifted. He glared at Athaw and then grabbed Etu’s arm. “We’re getting our mate back and then tanning his ass for running out without saying anything. **** Mer wiped the tears from his face and punched his pillow down. The trip to Kilara had been the longest two hours of his life. The four Arridians had not said one word to him the entire time. They’d stared at him like they’d never seen a human before. When they’d landed, one of them had helped him secure a room for the night at the transport station. Luckily, his contract with Galactic Nuptials included a round-trip ticket on the shuttle. He hadn’t used the first half of it since Hakan had picked him up in their shuttle. He missed his lion men. He hadn’t wanted to leave, but he couldn’t see sticking around to watch them all happily paired off. And he didn’t want to think about having to take care of any children that Athaw might have. Punching his pillow again, he closed his eyes and drifted toward sleep. A loud roar had him sitting up in the bed, shaking uncontrollably. What’s happening? He jumped up and grabbed his pants. He’d just pulled them over his hips when he heard a scuffling noise in the hall. He took a step and screamed when he heard another roar. The door burst open, the wooden frame splintering, and a large lion stepped into the room. Mer dived behind the bed, trying to make his body as small as possible.

“Mate! What the hell do you mean leaving us without permission? You deserve to have your ass reddened for scaring us so badly.” Mer peeked over the edge of the mattress. He clutched a pillow to his chest, trying to control the feelings of dizziness. “Delsin? What are you doing here?” Delsin walked through the broken door, followed closely by Etu. The looks on their faces had Mer pushing farther into the corner. “Mates need permission to leave, and you didn’t have it.” Delsin’s nostrils flared as he sniffed the air. “That’s a punishable offence,” said Etu. “But I’m not your mate.” Delsin growled. “Why would you say that?” Mer leaned his head to the side, exposing his neck. “Do you see a mating bite here?” Delsin shuffled his feet, looking sheepish, while Etu cleared his throat, rubbing at his neck. Sighing, Delsin walked over and sat on the bed. “We just wanted to wait until we were all sure before biting you. It’s no different than an engagement period among your people.” He narrowed his gaze at Mer. “Why did you leave?” Mer shrugged. “I had no intention of being a nanny for you and all your future children.” Etu snorted. “Guess Athaw got her point across.” Delsin stood and walked around the bed, pulling Mer from the corner. He took the pillow from his hands and tossed it to the floor. “We planned on officially mating you tonight after everyone left. We went to your room and discovered you’d gone.” Mer looked down and scuffed his toes on the rug. “What about Athaw?” Delsin growled. “I’d rather mate with a Killenese beast than Athaw.” “What’s that?” Etu laughed. “Picture a warthog only uglier.” Mer snickered and felt his eyes fill with tears.

Etu wiped the moisture from his face. “What’s wrong, mate?” “I never thought you’d want me for a mate.” Delsin hugged him close, resting his chin on his head. “You’re everything we want to spend our future with. Even our lions want you.” “What about cubs? I thought you had to produce more to save your pride.” Delsin grabbed Mer’s chin and brought his face up while Etu pressed against his back. “We have a nicely matched pair of cubs to raise now, and that’s all the family I need.” He took Mer by the arms and held him firmly. “Now, you have a punishment coming for running off without telling anyone.” Mer’s mouth dropped open and then he laughed. “Whatcha gonna do? Is da wittle pussy mad at me?” **** Delsin gazed at his mate and felt a feeling of peace settle over him. Mer’s eyes were wide and needy, his face radiating pleasure. “Etu, let’s strip our little man and give him his punishment before we give him any pleasure. “Good idea, Brother.” Holding Mer firmly in his arms, Delsin watched as Etu peeled the clothes from his body. He was all muscle, hard and cut like a sculpture with smooth, warm skin. When he was naked, Delsin sat on the bed and pulled him over his legs. “Hey, what’re you doing?” Mer wriggled, trying to move off of Delsin’s lap. “I thought you guys were kidding.” Delsin held one hand firmly on Mer’s back. “Press your hands to the floor and don’t move them, mate.” Mer stilled, looking back over his shoulder. “You’re not gonna hurt me, are you?”

“Never. You never have to fear us.” Delsin’s hand glided over the naked skin laid out before him like a buffet. “But you deserve a little torture for worrying us.” A slap on his rump had Mer rearing up and arching his back. Keeping a steady rhythm, he spanked his ass cheeks alternately, caressing the globes after every swat. Smoothing his hand down between his legs, he fondled his tight sac. “Oh, God. You’re killing me.” Mer began making little noises that quickly turned to needy moans. He began raising his ass to meet the downward stroke of Delsin’s hand. “If I am, you’re dying from pleasure.” Delsin groaned when Mer’s body slid back and forth over his swollen cock, driving him further and further toward release. **** Etu watched his mate stretched over Delsin’s lap and licked his lips. He moved toward the naked man, knees hitting the floor hard as he knelt by his side. Bending, he fondled Mer’s erect cock where it jutted down between Delsin’s legs. “It’s pretty obvious from this angle that you’re enjoying your punishment, love.” He flipped Mer over so he lay on his back across Delsin’s lap. Etu reached out his hand and cupped Mer’s hairy sac, rubbing his face against the dark patch of hair at the base of his shaft. “Move aside, Brother.” When Delsin moved his hand, Etu rose up and licked the soft patch of skin behind his balls, all the way to the top of his crease and back, stopping to rake his tongue over his opening. The throbbing in his own cock distracted him for a moment, and then he took one of Mer’s balls into his mouth and sucked gently. Mer groaned harshly, bucking his hips. “If you keep that up I’m gonna come.” Etu laughed, and took the hard shaft into his mouth, sucking hard on the tip. Mer moaned, the vibrations traveling through Etu’s body making him shudder.

“Please, I need…” “What do you need, mate?” Etu stood and moved between Mer’s spread legs, rubbing his cock between his tight ass cheeks. “I need one of you to fuck me.” Etu rubbed his hand across Mer’s head. “What do you think, Brother? Should we give him what he wants?”

Chapter 9 “Goddess, I need you.” Delsin pulled Mer to his feet and dropped his hands to his head, tangling his fingers in his hair. He leaned in close, his tongue flicking out to lick at his neck. “You complete me, make me feel whole.” He covered Mer’s lips with his own. Mer broke the kiss, his breathing labored. “Can we—” The rest of his question faded in a gasp as Delsin bit his neck. “I want to take you now, right here, and I want you to scream for me. I want to taste you and fuck you and…” “Yes! Suck me, please,” Mer begged. “You’re driving me insane.” Delsin chuckled, pushed Mer onto the edge of the bed and dropped to his knees, dragging his tongue up the length of Mer’s cock, flicking the tip before taking it in his mouth and suckling. Mer jerked, driving his cock farther into Delsin’s mouth. “Please.” He sobbed. “Need to come.” Delsin licked up and down the hard length, sucking at the head, dipping his tongue into the slit at the tip, holding his mate steady on the mattress. Mer’s fingers dug into Delsin’s arms, his nails leaving little bloody prints. “Not gonna last.” He thrust his hips and then cried out, pumping into Delsin’s mouth as he came. Delsin groaned as the hot, thick cream burst over his tongue. He kept sucking for another minute, the taste of his mate like nothing he’d ever experienced. When Mer’s trembles quieted, he pulled him up and kissed him, sharing the flavor of his seed. ****

Etu pushed Delsin away and picked Mer up. “It’s my turn for some playtime.” He placed his bundle higher on the bed, ducked his head, and brushed his lips across Mer’s temple. “I want a chance to make our little mate scream.” Grinning, he ran his tongue over the seam between Mer’s lips. Tugging at his long, silky brown hair, he tilted his head back and pushed his tongue into his mouth, nipping at his bottom lip. He deepened the kiss, moving onto Mer’s body and straddling his thighs. Quiet moans filled the air as his tongue probed, sweeping over the surfaces of Mer’s mouth. Etu’s hands settled on Mer’s chest as he leaned close to lick the shell of his ear and trail kisses down his neck. He bit his collarbone and then sucked the skin, letting his lips trail lower. Mer arched his back when Etu ran his tongue over the smaller man’s shoulder. “You feel so good.” Etu slid his hand over the warm skin of Mer’s chest, running his thumb over the tight nipples. “So responsive.” He leaned down and flicked one of his nipples with his tongue, sucking on the tight bud, then licked a path to the other side and repeated the movement. “Do you like this? Do you want more?” “Don’t stop.” Mer gasped. “Please, don’t stop. I want more. I need more.” Etu licked over Mer’s jaw, nipped his bottom lip, and then scooted down his body, licking a trail down the pale skin, tracing the muscles with his tongue as his hands mapped out his hard thighs. “Goddess, you taste wonderful.” Mer squirmed as Etu ran his lips along his balls and over his shaft. The small mate cried out when he dragged his teeth gently around the head of his cock. “Easy, love. I’ll never cause you pain.” He flicked the jutting length with his tongue, licking slowly up the velvety skin. His fingers trailed down to caress Mer’s balls and then up to stroke across the flared head. His tongue tortured the swollen tip, teasing down into the tiny opening.

“I’m not gonna last.” Mer panted, his head thrown back, his eyes closed. **** Delsin ground his teeth, watching his brother pleasure their mate. “No, don’t let him come yet, Brother. It’s time we created the bond.” “No! Don’t stop him.” Mer trembled from head to toe. “Let me come, please.” “Patience, mate. It’s time for us to claim you. I’m going to fuck your ass while you suck Etu’s cock. We’ll give you the mating bites when we all come.” Mer swallowed, his brows furrowed. “What if I can’t come again?” Etu chuckled. “I don’t think that’ll be a problem. I can pretty much guarantee you’ll be coming at least once more tonight, maybe twice.” Mer’s brow rose up into his hairline. “Don’t forget I’m human and not as energetic as you wolfy types.” Delsin rubbed his hand along Mer’s head. “Trust us, mate. We know how to bring out the best in you.” “I trust you guys.” “Good! We’ll be placing our bite marks on each shoulder. There’ll be pain, but it won’t last long, and it turns into some pretty intense pleasure, from what we’ve been told. Are you ready?” Mer swallowed and nodded. “I’ve been ready since I cooked you breakfast that first morning.” “Then get on your hands and knees, mate.” Mer pulled away and turned around, getting into position. Delsin’s hands gripped his hips, supporting him when he trembled. Etu’s big hand moved gently over his head, his fingers caressing his face. Nodding at Etu, Delsin climbed onto the bed and straddled Mer’s legs. He pressed against his back, kissing down his neck, letting his

hands slide around his body to rub over his chest. When Mer wiggled, he moved his hand to caress over the curve of his ass. Mer moaned when he used his fingers to spread him open. Mer jumped when Delsin caressed the puckered opening hidden between his ass cheeks. He traced the little ring of muscle, his fingertips making a slow circle. Delsin felt his mate’s tremors when he bent, spread his ass cheeks apart, and pushed his tongue as far into his ass as he could. “What are you doing?” Mer moaned. “It feels so naughty.” Laughing, Delsin reached down and rubbed his own cock, letting the lubrication coat his fingers. “Nothing is naughty between mates, love.” He pushed his slick fingers between Mer’s buttocks, sliding his finger along his crease. Groaning, he slid a finger in, feeling the silken walls of his ass gripping his digit, surrounding it in moist heat. That finger pushed deep, slid out and was joined by a second. “You tell me if anything hurts, love.” “You’re not hurting me. I need more!” Delsin nodded and worked a third finger in to stretch his hole. The ring of muscles clamped tight around his digits, sucking them into the dark opening. “I think you’re ready.” He aligned the tip of his penis with his mate’s hole and slowly and firmly pushed in until his balls snuggled up against his mate’s ass. They both froze when his hard shaft was completely sheathed inside Mer’s tight passage. Delsin chuckled, pulled out, and slapped him lightly on the ass. He released a harsh breath and drove deeply, grinding his hips against Mer’s ass. “You feel so good.” “I feel so full.” Mer moaned as he pushed in deeper. Delsin pulled back a little to ease the pain and changed the angle of his thrusts. When Mer groaned, he began withdrawing and pushing in again and again in rough, jerky motions. ****

Mer opened his eyes and watched Etu climb onto the bed in front of him. His breath caught at the sight of the long, thick cock surrounded by a dark nest of curls. Delsin’s hands on his flanks tightened, settling over his hip bones. A sharp, burning pain had flared when he entered him, and soon melted into pleasure. The burning in his bottom had eased, and the heat inside him had flared as the hard shaft filled him completely. The solid invasion of his body had stretched him to the limit. Etu’s hand tangled in Mer’s hair, yanking his head back and twisting it sideways to find his mouth. He licked his way inside, ravaging his mouth with a carnal kiss. Pulling away, he pushed his hips closer, his cock brushing the seam of Mer’s lips. Mer licked his way down to Etu’s balls, tonguing the drawn-up sac. He moaned happily as he licked, sucking first one and then the other into his warm mouth. He twirled his tongue around the hairy globes before moving up to take his hard shaft into his mouth. Delsin growled, pressing his head between Mer’s shoulders as he thrust, his thick cock pulling back and thrusting forward, taking him to greater heights of pleasure. He thrust into Mer harder, his fingers digging into his thighs. His cock struck Mer’s gland over and over, the pleasure sending Mer closer and closer to the edge as he thrust his hips up to match Delsin’s strokes. Etu’s hips moved back and forth as he thrust into Mer’s mouth, his fingers digging into Mer’s scalp as he sucked hard, swallowing around his shaft. “Goddess, that’s good.” Etu groaned, his eyes closed. “Get ready, mate. I’m gonna come.” Mer sucked harder, bobbing his head faster, one hand going to his own shaft. “No you don’t.” Delsin grabbed his hand, replacing it with his own. “This is mine. I’m going to give you pleasure, mate. You’re not going to touch yourself unless I tell you to.” He grabbed Mer’s hips

and lifted them higher. “I’m going to fuck you so hard you’ll feel me for a week.” Mer groaned around the cock in his mouth and then sucked harder, dragging his tongue along the prominent vein on the underside. “I’m coming!” Etu pumped his hips faster and then leaned down and brushed his lips along Mer’s neck. “Goddess, so am I.” Delsin leaned over and licked Mer’s shoulder. Mer’s ass clenched when Delsin’s hand wrapped around his shaft, his balls drawing up close to his body. Etu cried out just as his warm, salty seed coated the inside of Mer’s mouth. He could feel the warmth of Delsin’s seed when he came deep inside his ass. Mer felt his two mates trace the muscles of his shoulders with their tongues right before they bit down on the tendon. He shuddered and then exploded in the strongest climax he’d ever had, when their long fangs thrust deep, razor-sharp. He felt as if he’d been struck by lightning. The pain was violent, but quickly morphed into exquisite pleasure he never wanted to end. Delsin eased out of his body and lowered his legs gently, rolling him onto his back on the mattress. His kiss was hungry and possessive. As soon as he pulled away, Etu was there to take his place. You’re ours now, mate. We’ll be tied together forever. “Holy shit!” Mer rose up and studied Delsin through lowered lashes. “I just heard you in my head.” Delsin nodded. “That’s the mating bond taking hold. It will get stronger every day. Soon, you’ll be able to read our emotions even from great distances.” Etu fell behind him on the bed and pulled Mer into a spooning position. “Not that we’re going to let you get very far from us.” “Can I talk to you in your heads now?” Delsin grinned. “Give it a try.”
Meredith’s Pride

Mer closed his eyes, concentrating. Do you think you guys will ever love me as much as I love you? Delsin moved closer until his chest rested against Mer’s. “We already love you, mate. You’re our world now. Everything we do will be to keep you safe and make you happy.” Etu pressed his filling cock against Mer’s ass. “It’s good to know you love us the same as we love you.” Mer snuggled down, the warmth of his mate’s bodies surrounding him. “How long do you guys live?” Delsin shrugged. “In Earth years, a very long time.” “Does that mean you’ll be looking for another mate when I die?” Etu ran his hand down Mer’s side. “As long as we claim and bite you regularly, you’ll live as long as we do.” Delsin scooted down into the bed and laid his head on Mer’s shoulder. “Let’s get some sleep. I’m going to want to claim our mate again before we head home.” Mer was just dozing off when Etu’s voice drifted across the bed. “What are we going to do about Athaw?” Mer giggled when Delsin growled. “Let’s sign her up with Galactic Nuptials and let them find her a mate.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR I was born and raised in the great southern state of Tennessee. In my youth, I studied nursing and spent several happy years working in the hospitals there until I branched out into medical management in 1980. In 1998 I was managing a medical supply house in Chattanooga, when I met the love of my life. The only problem facing me then, he lived way out in Oklahoma. You see, we had met in a chat room! He romanced me daily with love letters, flowers, and phone calls. It wasn’t long before I uprooted myself and moved west to join him. We married in 1999 and then continued our fantasy romance all over the world. Together we have traveled in almost all of the Continental United States and taken trips to Canada and China. I retired from working in 2002, and it wasn’t long before my husband was encouraging me to find some kind of outlet to occupy my time, something that was challenging and rewarding. I was already obsessed with reading about romance, and I began to think I could probably write a good romantic story. My husband heartily agreed with me. With that encouragement, I began writing my first book. I wasn’t really convinced that anyone else would find it interesting, but he pressed me to take a chance and send it in to a publisher. To my surprise, it was accepted, and now I’m able to share it with readers everywhere who like a “happily ever after” story. Today, I’m living in California with my still romantic husband of twelve years and our boys. Our boys consist of Beau, Midnight, and Bubba, three male cats that allow us to live with them and serve them at their leisure. I continue to write almost daily, hoping that someone, somewhere will get the same enjoyment from reading my stories that I get from writing them.
