MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
MacDougal's Rule "Get out of the fountain, Maxie." The pixie-like figure danced and splashed beneath the spurting water. Seth watched as she turned and twirled about beneath the wash of the erupting high-shooting plumes in front of the courthouse steps. What in hell did she think she was up to? Was this the same competent young woman he worked with everyday? It was hard to believe. She stopped spinning long enough to look at him and grinned. Drops of water sparkled like stars all over her skin. Tipping her head back, she spread her arms wide as though in entreaty to the gods above. "It's hot, Seth. So hot. And this feels so good. It's invigorating." He snorted. Invigorating wasn't quite the word he'd use as he witnessed her uninhibited display. "Hell yes, it's hot. It's July, what do you expect?" He was having a hard time maintaining his concentration. That cute little sun dress she wore was now plastered to her very curvaceous wet body revealing every sultry dip. It was that very body that had kept him in a perpetual state of painful arousal for longer than he cared to admit. He could see the dusky peaks of her hard nipples straining against the fabric of the almost transparent white material and he licked his dry lips. Damn, he wanted to taste her, to suck all that cool moisture off her body, nice and slow. 4

He shook his head in disbelief. He was a peace officer dammit and she was a dispatcher. He didn't mess around with anyone in the Department—it could get too darn uncomfortable when the affair was over. It was MacDougal's Rule, a firm one he'd made for himself. He'd never been the least tempted to break it. But, fuck, she was the prettiest damn dispatcher he'd ever seen. And that voice of hers could melt asphalt pavement during an antarctic freeze; even across the airwaves of the radio it had a way of drizzling all over you like warm caramel, all smooth, sleek, and tasty. It made him think of warm summer nights, hot skin, and rumpled silk sheets. And what it would feel like to nestle nice and close between those long golden limbs of hers. They were gorgeous legs, curvy and firm, tanned by the sun, and they looked satin smooth. How would those sweet limbs feel wrapped around his hips? Damn, that vision caused a throbbing in his groin. He didn't know too many of his fellow officers who didn't fantasize about Maxie Travis. He tried real hard to stay out of the conversations, afraid he'd punch somebody if they got too mouthy. Angry heat coursed through him every time they started talking about her that way. She was too fine a woman to be the subject of their crude humor. That's what he told himself. And he almost had himself convinced. It couldn't possibly be because he wanted her for himself, and the thought of her with any one of those jerks set his teeth on edge. 5

Maxie had worked at the Department for about six months. He remembered well the first day she'd walked in. Hell, he remembered everything about her. Yet in all that time he'd managed to avoid getting near her beyond offering a polite greeting now and then. Or had she been avoiding him? He couldn't be sure, because as far as he knew, she hadn't dated anyone in the Department. At least not yet. Maybe she subscribed to MacDougal's Rule herself. All that long honey blond hair and those big sky-blue eyes had a way of making a man's head spin. But he'd sure tried to steer clear of her and it had taken all his self-control and will power to do it. He'd congratulated himself on being successful. At least he had been until tonight. So far it looked to be a hot, dry summer. This evening seemed particularly stifling, as well as humid. He looked up at the inky night sky. It was a crystal clear night and the stars were unusually vivid. And there was a frigging full moon. Go figure. Didn't it always bring out the craziness in people? He ran a hand along the back of his neck and around the inside collar of his damp shirt. He'd just changed his clothes before he left the station and they were already wilted. The thick moist air clung to him-every stitch he wore felt damp and lifeless in this heat. Temperatures had run in the 100's for over a week now and everyone was edgy. His shift over, he'd looked forward to getting home and having an ice-cold beer, maybe two—after all, it was Friday night. He was tired and it had been a long, grueling, hot one. Once settled behind the wheel of his pickup, and cruising 6

down Elm Street, a white flash had caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. Big mistake. He'd squinted harder and discovered sure enough someone was there who shouldn't be. Swerving his truck into the parking lot he could almost taste that beer in his fridge, the one that would now have to wait. He'd had no choice other than to stop and check it out even if he was offduty. Switching off the motor, he released his seat belt and stepped out of the truck heaving a tired sigh. Another hard look, then he rubbed a hand across his face. He must be real tired because he couldn't be seeing what he thought he did— it looked like a nymph cavorting in the water. And what did he find when he reached the edge of the fountain? It was Maxie Travis, the very woman he'd been having a hard enough time not pursuing. Wasn't it difficult enough contending with her at work every day fully clothed without now sending his libido into overdrive seeing her half naked looking like some lush fairy nymph? His unruly prick was straining for attention, had been trying to get his notice for weeks—no, make that months—to take her to bed. This was not going to be one of his better nights. He tried again. Damned full moon, anyway. "Maxie come out of there. Now." Again, she turned her almond-shaped blue gaze on him and raised her arms over her head in supplication to the water god. "My air conditioning is out and I couldn't stand it another minute. This is so ... so ... refreshing." She lowered her arms 7

and smiled at him. "Come join me, Seth," she coaxed, extending one of her arms toward him and pointed a long, sexy index finger and motioning to him. "Come on in, the water's fine. I know you must be hot ... and sticky. Wouldn't you like to cool down, just a little?" Cool down? Unlikely. There was something about the lazy way her sensuous lips lifted and curved. Then, much to his dismay, her pink tongue flicked out to trace a slow circle across her full lower lip, and he felt his cock throb with dissatisfaction as unbelievably it hardened even more, pressing painfully against the zipper of his jeans, wanting out, demanding action, not talk. Seth ignored his body as best he could. But then Maxie turned, raised her head and thrust her tongue out to catch droplets of cascading water. She might as well have been wearing nothing at all as the fountain lights of red and blue silhouetted her for his viewing pleasure. Could he not imagine those moist, sweet lips wrapped around his rigid dick, sucking and stroking with that pink tongue of hers? Most definitely. Talk about Helen of Troy tempting the legions. His body felt hot and ready, like a firecracker set to go off on the fourth of July. And Maxie Travis was the match primed to strike his fuse. He had to get her out of that fountain before somebody came by and saw them. Before he lost complete control, splayed her out on the marble and dove in fast and deep. Temple, Missouri, was a small town, but not that small. Small enough that gossip such as this would hang in the air for generations, and large enough there could be some late 8

night partiers passing through at any moment. It might be after midnight, but not quite late enough for the whole town to be asleep. "You've got to get out of there, Maxie. It's against the law, you know. I don't want to have to arrest you." "Would you, Seth? Arrest me?" She opened her eyes wide, all innocence. "I've never been to jail." She held her arms out in front of her, offering herself to him. "I think it would be okay if you arrested me though. Want to handcuff me? I've never been handcuffed either." There was an imp in that lopsided, sensual grin she gave him. What in hell was she up to? The idea of handcuffing her brought other visions to his mind. And it wasn't going to be for a trip to jail. The longer he stood here, the worse it got. "Are you drunk, Maxie? How much have you had to drink tonight?" "Well, let's see." She seemed to pause to consider. Lifting her gaze to the sky, she tapped that cute little chin of hers with her index finger. He rolled his own eyes heavenward as there went that little sexy pink tongue of hers again as she seemed to seriously contemplate on how to answer his question. "I did drink practically a gallon of strawberry lemonade." She looked at him with a wide smile. "Maybe that was it. All those lemons and strawberries, maybe I'm punch drunk. Would that be right?" Then she made a moue with her lips, and damn, but weren't they just asking to be kissed. He'd fought so long against wanting her; this wasn't fair. 9
MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
He also knew she wasn't going to come out of the damn water on her own. With a heavy sigh, he sat down on the flat edge of the fountain ledge and took off his socks and sneakers. No point in ruining a pair of perfectly good Nikes. He set them down on the sidewalk, then turned and stepped up onto the flat ridge of the fountain, feeling the smooth, cool marble beneath his feet. He looked across at her. Would she stay put until he got to her? Or would she decide it was playtime and try for a game of come-and-get-me-if-you-can? There was a certain challenge in her eyes as she stared back at him, one perfect golden eyebrow slightly arched. "All right, Maxie," he warned, "I'm coming to get you. Are you sure you want it this way?" He waited for her to answer him. "Think you're man enough to take me, Officer? It might not be so easy you know." She flagrantly stood there, hands on her rounded hips, legs splayed, head tilted at a slight angle, actually baiting him. Oh yeah, she was challenging him all right. And, damn, but wasn't he just hot enough to take her up on it. Funny, he'd never thought of her as the type to try to pull a stunt like this. She'd always been rather the quiet sort—soft and sweet—feminine, and just too damn pretty. He hopped into the water. It was cold, but it felt good, a lot better than the lethargic, heavy heat that hung on the summer night. He felt his body temperature drop a good ten degrees right off the bat. He stared at her across the length of the fountain. 10

Dare he say he now saw just an edge of uncertainty there? He smiled to himself and took a splashing step towards her, waves rippled around his calves. What he was going to do when he got to her wasn't something he wanted to consider. Not at all. **** Ohmigod. He was really going to do it. Maxie hadn't actually thought ahead to whether this little escapade would truly be successful or not. It was strictly a realization that for months now she'd wanted him. Had watched him. And on occasion had caught him watching her. This was an act of desperation on her part. She'd come to the conclusion that he would never ask her out. Oh, she'd turned down plenty of requests for dates from his fellow officers, but he was the one she wanted—Seth MacDougal. Tall, broad, muscular. Sandy brown hair with blonde sprinkles, and hazel eyes that sometimes looked ivy-vine green and other times denim blue; sometimes held mischief, other times sympathy. He could wield a heavy hand when required, or a quick hug. Everything she knew about him told her he was a good person. He didn't have that swaggering, better-thaneverybody-else attitude so many of the men she'd encountered had a tendency to exhibit. And she wanted him to notice her. She'd finally come to the conclusion it was going to take more than the usual flirting to get his attention, or get him to 11

change his mind about dating her. He was known for not dating co-workers. It wasn't a Department policy, strictly his. It was common knowledge he had his own rule-MacDougal's Rule. And she wanted him to break it. This was a decidedly reckless act on her part. She'd planned carefully. She knew what time he got off from work and that he'd have to drive past the fountain to go home. One thing he was also known for was being observant and always attentive to his duty as an officer of the law. She'd never done anything like this in her life before. It was way out of character, most assuredly rash. But it was also an indication of how far she was willing to go to gain his attention. She'd have one shot. She'd taken a chance and now it just might pay off. Sometimes one had to do something just a little crazy. She watched as he splashed his way towards her, getting wetter by the minute, to the point now where his clothes clung to him almost as badly as her dress wrapped around her. His damp shirt molded to the strong, defined muscles of his chest. She inhaled sharply at the solid evidence of his daily workouts at the gym. His black jeans pressed against lean hips. She could see the bulging ridge of his cock, and what an impressive sight it was. She licked her lips in anticipation, unable to glance away until he was standing directly before her. "Well?" he demanded. Nervously she chewed at her lower lip. Raising her hand, she traced a finger over the definite protrusion of a small hard nipple. He flexed beneath her touch. Oh, nice, definitely nice. 12

She lifted her other hand and, closing her eyes, she sighed with pleasure. "I've waited to have you this close for a long time, Seth MacDougal. If you don't want me, you better tell me now. I've taken some very drastic measures tonight to get your attention." She flattened both palms against his chest and she felt her pussy clench with anticipation. Could feel the beating of his heart as it thudded an erratic tempo. At least he didn't appear to be totally unaffected by her. "You did this on purpose?" He rasped out. She felt the deep rumble of his voice against her fingers. Fisting her hands, she bunched his shirt, pulling downwards forcing him to lean toward her. "I can't believe you did this on purpose." She felt the cool water ebb and flow all around her, lapping at her legs. The gentle spray rained down over them as she pulled him closer. Hot and cold. Hard and soft. "Kiss me, Seth," she whispered against his lips. Only a moment's hesitation and his cool, hard mouth finally captured hers and it was just as demanding as she expected it would be. He coaxed her mouth open and thrust his tongue inside. His hands clamped onto her forearms and he pulled her close. No, he wasn't unaffected by any means. Maxie heard him groan as she sucked hard, her swelling breasts crushed against his hard chest. Her stomach fluttered, then curled, feeling like a fireball had settled at its center. He reached down and cupped her bottom, yanking her closer, grinding her against his hard erection. Guttural whimpers erupted from inside her, reflecting all the pent up need that had built up inside over the last months. She felt 13

her own liquid heat pool between her thighs, responding to him. Lifting one leg she snaked it around his thigh, opening to him, and drawing him between her legs, flush against her body. He felt so damn good, smelled and tasted so ... male. Lifting his head, he looked down at her, his eyes near coal black and dilated with passion. "Not here," he growled as he picked her up, settled her close against his chest as she wound herself tightly around him. With long strides he brought them both out of the fountain and strode toward the dew-covered blanket of grass completely hidden from view by a thick arrangement of lilac bushes. He sank to his knees and lay her back gently, pinning her beneath his hot gaze. "Are you sure you want this?" She reached up and lowered the straps of the wet sundress, exposing her breasts to his intense gaze. "I want you. No one else. Just you. Can you deal with that?" He leaned forward and pushed the dress lower, over her hips and down her legs. She wore no bra and only a transparent flimsy pair of wet, white thong panties remained. He traced an index finger along the circumference of the elastic waistband. The glancing touch of his hot flesh sent spirals of heat arrowing through her abdomen. His gaze roamed over her body and she ached for more of his touch. "I've wanted you for a long time, and fought against it," he said in a low voice. He traced his finger along the inside edge of one leg. Removing his finger, he leaned closer and cupped a hand over her scantily-clad mound. 14

"I realize now, it was probably a losing battle from the beginning. I had no idea you felt the same." He skimmed one finger lightly over the cloth-covered crease of her feminine lips and she arched against him. "You like that," he murmured. He did it again and she whimpered. She was so glad she'd read the signs correctly. If she'd been wrong, she didn't know what she would have done. It would have been embarrassing to face him at work. He reached up and grasped the elastic waist of her panties and slid them down her legs. She arched her hips to make it easier. Desire for him coiled inside and she could feel her slick juices covering her thighs. "You're so pretty," he murmured. Kneeling between her legs, he stroked his fingers along her sensitive inner thighs. "So much silk. Are you hot for me, Maxie? Are you wet?" She couldn't speak, her breath was caught in her throat. All she could do was feel. She'd dreamed of this moment. Well, maybe not here on the courthouse lawn, but certainly of him touching her like this. The humidity caused a thin sheen of sweat to coat her skin. She felt the moisture start to collect in the valley between her breasts. Seth leaned forward and she watched as he captured the salty liquid with his tongue, felt him sweep upwards, lean further over her, and taste her pulse, suckle at her neck. "Yes, Seth. Oh, God, yes," and she tangled her fingers in his hair, drawing him closer. Out here, beneath the sky, the full moon—it felt erotic, earthy. And she loved the feeling of danger. 15
MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
Moving back down her body, he slid her legs further apart and dropped his head, bringing his mouth to her mound. She heard him inhale. "You want me," he whispered. "Already, you're so hot." She felt him slide a finger along her slit, opening her lips. "Oh yeah, you're wet, honey, so wet. I'm hard as a rock with wanting you." She felt his breath against her labia lips. "I want my cock inside you, but I want to taste you first. I want to know just how sweet you really are." He lifted her hips and his mouth clamped over her clit and his tongue teased and thrust into her slick core. This was indeed her fantasy, she thought. Oh, his mouth did such wonderful things. She sucked the moist night air into her lungs, sensations swirled all around her—the scent of the lilacs, the damp fresh grass, and the sensations of his mouth. More sweat beaded on her skin. She blinked and focused on the full, pale moon high above, felt him suck, his tongue swirling and driving her higher. So intense, his hands stroking her, his mouth teasing her, as the night and the full moon seduced her. She felt him insert a finger and penetrate her vagina, pressing deep, retreating and adding another, then a third, stretching her, preparing her. He continued to tease her clit with his tongue, sucked deep. His fingers fucked her slow and steady. She felt desire swirl all around her and envelope her completely. At last the dam inside her burst, releasing so much pleasure and sensation pulsing through her she undulated with wave after wave of pure bliss. 16

"Was it good, honey?" he whispered as he retreated from her body. "You taste like the most decadent dessert in the world." He pulled his shirt over his head, then quickly released his jeans and pushed them from his body. "Now I want to feel all of you. Would you like that?" Through hazy vision she'd watched him undress, revealing each inch of bronzed, sinewy muscle. He was a Greek god, pure and simple, everything she knew he'd be. She reached out for him. He came down to her, stretched over her and she felt his hard, hot skin cover every inch of her own. "Oh yeah, sweetheart, you feel divine." He reached up to cup her breasts, fondling their round fullness. Dropping forward, he teased at her mouth, sucking her lower lip, he nipped and soothed, traced with his tongue and captured her lips again. His fingers teased her taut nipples, pressed and tweaked. So much feeling from so many directions. He ground his hips against her. She opened her legs wider and he nestled between her thighs, his cock eased into the folds of her wet, engorged entrance and he rubbed his rigid shaft against her sensitive clitoris. "Oh, Seth," she breathed, enraptured with sensations. "Fill me. I need to feel you inside me." He ground against her. "Guide me in, honey. I want to feel your hand on me. Stroke me first, then put me inside you." Maxie raised her legs, planting her feet flat on the ground. Then she reached down between their slick bodies to grasp him. All silk wrapped steel, thick and hard. She stroked him, swirled her finger along the tiny slit at his tip, spreading his 17

pre-cum around the rounded, velvety head. Then stroked down his rigid length slowly. Oh God, he felt good. She thought she could stay like this forever, stroking him, feeling him, his scent wrapping around her. She heard him groan. "That's it. Damn, your hand is so soft, feels so fine. Once more, baby, then guide me inside you. I need to be inside you—have needed to be there for a long, long time." Once more she stroked down his length. She guided him to her wet center, felt him thrust forward and penetrate, separate and fill her. Oh yes, he filled her completely. As the clinging moist heat of summer sheened their bodies, slowly he stroked, then retreated, stroked in again, deeper. Again. And again. Until he was fully and completely lodged inside her. Divided and filled by him, she felt him penetrate to the opening of her cervix. "You're so tight around me. Perfect. So good. I'm not hurting you, am I?" He sounded so concerned for her. He was fully sheathed, yet he remained still as her body accustomed itself to his presence. She felt so completely filled by him, nerve endings grabbing and surrounding. Each small movement he made, she felt it echo through her. "No, it feels good to me, too. So good. No pain, only pleasure, Seth. Fuck me, please. I feel like I'm perched at a precipice, help me. It's so much." He wrapped his arms around her and began a steady rhythm of thrust and retreat. She countered him and 18

anchored her legs around his hips, raising her hips to meet his movements, driving him deeper inside. They seemed to dance to the rhythm of the night, the chirping of the crickets, the call of the moon, an owl softly cooing in the trees overhead. All melded and blended into the sights and sounds of being loved by Seth. The rhythm changed as he moved to long, deep strokes and she felt the heat surge all around her, meeting him thrust for thrust, passion surrounding and gripping her until there was nothing beyond feeling and responding to this man. He drove deep and stilled; she felt his pulsing release pour into her as he emitted a guttural groan and his muscles bunched beneath her grip. Her own release took her and shot her into its whirlpool, as the world dizzied and spun round and round carrying her beyond reality. **** Slowly Seth pulled from her overheated body and rolled to the ground beside her. "That was—" "Incredible?" she finished for him. He looked at her and saw her lips curve in a smile. The humid night air clung to his skin. He moved to his side and raised himself up to look down at her. Damn, she was beautiful. She exuded a rosy radiance that seemed to glow beneath the luminous full moon, a fine sheen of sweat covering her skin. And he still had the urge to lick every salty drop from her delectable body. "Yeah, incredible. It's never been like that before." 19
MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
"I'm glad." She looked up at him, her gaze still heavy with passion. "Still going to arrest me, Officer?" He circled a slow finger around the aureole of first one tantalizing breast, and then the other. He couldn't resist, and lowered his head, tasted the sweat which clung to her body. He heard her soft moan, felt her sharp intake of breath. Raising his head, he looked up at her. "We're going to be seeing a lot of each other." "Are we?" He felt a tenseness in her body, saw it in her eyes, heard the hesitation in her question. "You can't possibly have thought this would be all there'd be, did you? Simply a little midnight madness?" She slid her gaze away, but he lifted a hand and forced her to look at him. "Did you?" "I didn't think beyond getting you to actually 'see' me." He traced a finger along her jaw. "Oh, I've seen you. I just had a rule never to get involved with anyone at work." "And now?" "I'm deciding there are always exceptions to the rule. Even MacDougal's hard and fast rule. I think I was softening even before tonight. This simply clinched the choice I was attempting to come to terms with." She studied him. He felt her searching for something. "It will make you uncomfortable won't it? With your friends?" He shrugged. "There'll be some ribbing at first. You know how it goes." "You sidestepped the question. Will it make you uncomfortable? Cause problems?" "I can take care of myself. Will you be okay with it?" 20
MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
She smiled. "I wouldn't have done this," she made a sweeping gesture, "if I wasn't prepared to take the heat." He sat up and handed her dress to her. He pulled on his jeans and shirt. "Exactly why did you go to these lengths?" He watched as she pulled on her damp sundress. It was wrinkled, but it didn't matter to him. She was still the prettiest damn woman he'd ever seen. She bit her lower lip and looked away. "I felt if I didn't do something pretty soon, someone else would snap you up before I even had a chance. I'd seen you look at me a couple of times and I thought ... well, I thought you might be interested. It was a slim chance." "Not that slim. I've watched you since the first day you started work." "MacDougal's Rule, huh." He grinned wryly. "Yeah, MacDougal's Rule." He reached for her. "But you're sure worth breaking a whole set of rules for." She looked up at him and he could see her anxiety. "Are you sure?" He leaned down and claimed her lips and she wound her arms around his neck. Then he lifted his head. "We've sure done things backwards though." She was the kind of woman who deserved flowers and romantic dinners, to be wooed and made love to. "Yes," she agreed, "but sometimes it takes a desperate measure to get a man to break his rules." "Do you make a habit of doing this kind of thing?" That could present a real challenge. 21
MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
She laughed, a deep throaty, sensual laugh. "No, I can't say that I do. I've never done anything like this before." "Well, that's good. I'd hate to have to be bailing you out of jail every other week for swimming in the town fountain." "No, you won't have to be doing any of that." He stood up and helped her to her feet. Pulling her close, he again kissed her. "I can't seem to stop touching you, now that I've let down my guard." She smoothed her hands along his shirtfront. "I'm glad," she whispered. "If I see you getting bored I may have to resort to desperate measures again though." He laughed. "It might be interesting to see what your fertile imagination would come up with." A mysterious smile crossed her face. "I can be very creative when it's required." He linked his fingers with hers. "So I've seen. It's late, I better get you home." They stopped at the fountain and he picked up his socks and sneakers. "You know, I'll never think of this fountain in the same way. Funny, how we take things for granted." He escorted her to her brownstone apartment building across the street. They stopped in front of her door. "Would you like to come in?" she asked him softly. "I thought you said your air conditioning wasn't working. Maybe you should come to my place," he suggested. She looked up at him and offered him that mysterious smile he knew he was already becoming addicted to. "But I have lots of ice cubes and they're only waiting for a good place to ... melt." 22
MacDougal's Rule by Adrianna Dane
Laughing, he followed her inside. He couldn't wait to find out exactly how many ice cubes she had stored up and even more intriguing, how fast they could melt ... and where. ~The End~
