Introduction Fold and Say® Basic Concepts Mini-Books is a research-based series of 108 reproducible activity books that presents an easy, fun way to teach important basic concepts. There are 50 opposite word pairs (big/little, hot/cold, up/down, etc.) and eight colors. The concepts are those assessed in the Wiig Assessment of Basic Concepts® (WABC®) and those taught in the Webber® Basic Concepts Instructional Activity Program. Each Mini-Book introduces a concept and has three pages of pictures demonstrating it. The book then tests the child’s knowledge of the concept by pairing it with one and two unrelated objects, or “foils.” On the last page, the child can show mastery of the concept by drawing a picture that displays it. The workbook/CD-ROM set includes 108 Mini-Books, awards, student mastery checklists, blank Mini-Book for extra practice or teaching new concepts, and extension activities for the classroom. For more fun, have the students color the black and white pages while they learn the concepts. Students may take home the Mini-Books for more practice with their homework partner.
Fold and Say® Basic Concepts Mini-Books may be little, but they’re BIG on fun!
All the Mini-Books follow the same format:

Basic Concepts Activities • Have children create their own Basic Concepts Mini-Books. Use other advanced concepts related to the ones in this book that teach different colors, shapes, emotions, quantities, location, or time. • Use magazines or other books to cut out pictures to match the basic concepts presented in this book. For example, find pictures of yellow things, heavy things, mothers, fathers, cold things, hot things, etc. • Create a basic concept web. Children write or glue pictures of concepts within a selected group. Example:
pizza
coffee
hot sun
soup
• Go for a “Concept Search.” Have children go around the classroom, and search for objects that belong to a particular concept family. Record the objects the children find on the board. For example, “Find the objects in our classroom that are hard, soft, closed, open, old, or new.” • Go through books, and have the children listen or watch for items that define a particular concept. For example, “The girl is behind the tree.” “The dog is in the doghouse.” • Using blank cards, make a deck of the 100 basic concepts included in this book. Play the Memory game. Turn a select group of pairs face down. Have student turn over one card and then another to look for its match. If the student finds a match, he keeps the pair. If there is no match, the cards are turned face down, and the next player takes a turn. The student with the most pairs wins. Do not include colors and shape cards.
vi
• Divide students into pairs. Give them a concept pair, and have them write or illustrate as many items as they can that would fall into that concept. For example:
heavy
light
car book bike
kitten pencil ball
• Read aloud five words that relate to a certain concept; i.e., “Stuffed animal, pillow, bed, cotton, and kitten.” Children will respond, “They are all soft!” • Have children tell a silly story, using as many basic concept words as they can. The teacher can write it for them on the board or overhead projector. Ask the students to help find the concept words in the story. • Use blank cards to make a deck of the 100 basic concepts in this book. Shuffle and place the concept cards face up. Have students take turns finding a concept pair that matches. Do not include color or shape cards. • When focusing on a particular concept, for example, “hard/soft,” fill a bag with objects that are hard and soft. The children take turns reaching into the bag and telling if the item is hard or soft. • Play “I Spy” by placing colorful pictures or posters around the room, and say to the children, “The picture that I spy is under the window. The picture I spy is round.” • Ask the children to play with a dollhouse or farmhouse. Ask the child to put the horse “in” the stable. Put the doll “under” her blanket.
