Nicole loves sport! She does some sport every day. Three times a week she goes to the sports centre to play basketball or badminton or to go swimming. She does sport at school, at home in the garden and with her friends in the park. In the summer she likes tennis, and in the winter she goes skiing. There isn’t a sport that Nicole doesn’t like, but her favourite is football. On Saturday afternoons she plays football for a girls’ team. It’s great! This year the team has got a new coach. Nicole likes her a lot. She is strict, but the team works hard in every practice session, and they always win their matches!

Ayers Rock Hotel! Welcome to the Ayers Rock Hotel! To switch on the light in your room, insert your card in the slot next to the door. To use the phone, just lift the receiver and push 0 to talk to the receptionist. Do you want to visit the rock? It’s not far, it takes 15 minutes by car, or you can go by bus from the bus stop opposite the hotel. You can walk around the rock – it takes about one hour on foot, or you can ride around it on a motorbike! You can climb the rock in good weather, but you mustn’t climb when the rock is wet: it’s dangerous. And remember: it is a sacred place for the Aboriginal people. You must be careful of their culture. Do machines make us lazy?
Example
Our houses are full of machines. We have machines to do the cleaning, machines to help us at school and at work and machines to help us travel to work. Do they really help us, or will be too lazy to do anything by 2050? Jenny (14, student) When my Mum was younger, she walked to school every day. Now everybody goes by car. I think cars have made us lazy! Lisa (40, office worker) I work in an office and I use computers every day. Computers make things easier, but we have to work much faster now than 20 years ago, so we still work very hard! Jacek (23, tourist) I think machines are great! Now I can travel by plane and I can go further and travel faster than my parents did. It doesn’t make me lazy; it makes me want to see more and more of the world! Martin (35, electrician) I think machines do make life easier for people but then they have more time to do other things. Some people are lazy, but many people have hobbies. I’m not having a party, because it’s the holidays and lots of my friends will be away on holiday. My two best friends will be here though, so I’ll celebrate with them. My birthday’s on a Saturday this year. Dad isn’t working, so he’s taking us for a day out. I wanted to go to the moto-cross track, but Dad says that’s too dangerous, so we’re going karting. We’re spending the morning just learning to drive the go-karts and then in the afternoon we’re racing! My sister isn’t coming, because she doesn’t like karting, but in the evening we’re all going to the pizza restaurant. They make the best pizzas in the world! I’m really looking forward to my birthday now! I’ll tell you all about it in my next email. Write soon! George Example Who is George writing to?

Good morning, you must be Emma Harding, the new girl. Is that right? Yes. When did you arrive in Manchester? Last Thursday. Good. I hope everything’s OK. Yes, thanks. I’ve got a few questions to ask you. Right. Now, where were you born? I was born in London. And when were you born? On the 5th of September 1989. The 5th of September 1989. Good. And where do you live? 14 Park Street. Thank you, Emma. Your class is 4A ... OK ... And you start lessons tomorrow at 9.15. Now, have you got any questions? Yes, I wanted to know how I can get to school from Park Street. That’s easy. You take the number 12 bus. The journey takes about 10 minutes. The bus stop is outside the school.

Hi, Paul, are you coming to my party on Saturday? Yes, I am. But how do I get there from the train station? It isn’t far. You turn left when
Oh, there’s a lot of work to do. Who can help me? I’ll help you, Mum. What do you want me to do? You can clean the kitchen. All right. Oh, Mum ... Yes? Can I go to Jamie’s for a sleepover tonight? You have to do the washingup first! I don’t want to do the washing-up. I don’t like washing-up. Can’t Dad do it? He’s in bed. He doesn’t feel well. I don’t think Dad is ill. He’s watching the match on television. I think he’ll be all right after the match. Well, I don’t know. Perhaps Dad is OK, but I’m getting a headache. Shall I get you an aspirin, Mum? No. I don’t want an aspirin. I want some help with the housework.

you come out of the station. Turn left, OK ... Walk along to the traffic lights near the post office. Cross the road at the lights and turn right into Castle Street. Go along Castle Street. The hospital is on your right, but go straight on. Straight on at the hospital, OK ... Take the second road on the left. Our house is the big house opposite the church. Mm. OK. It’s about 10 minutes on foot. Oh. I don’t like walking. Is there a bus? No, there isn’t. But you can take a taxi. A taxi? No thanks, I’ll walk. See you on Saturday!

Have you got the timetable, Francine? Yes, here it is. What have we got on Mondays? Well, we’ve got assembly at nine o’clock, then the first lesson is Maths. That’s at 9.15. Then at ten we’ve got English. What time’s the break? At 10.45, a quarter to eleven. Then we’ve got double P.E., from five past eleven to lunch time. And when’s lunch? Urm... it’s at half past twelve. The afternoon starts at two o’clock, with Technology, then we’ve got Science at 2.45 and the last lesson is French, at half past three. And when does that finish? At ten past four, of course.

Robin, where do you live? In Helston. And where’s that? It’s in the south-west of England, in Cornwall. And is it a town or a village? It’s a small town. But you weren’t born there, were you? No, I was born in London. So why did you move? My father didn’t like it in London. He wanted a quieter life.

And your mother? My mother was born in Cornwall. So she was happy to go back there. What about you, Robin? Do you like living in Helston? Yes, I do. I’ve got lots of new friends, and there are lots of things to do. And it isn’t as dangerous as London. I can go anywhere by bike. In London I went by bus or underground. So Helston is better than London? Oh, I didn’t say that. It’s healthier and quieter. But I still like London. It’s more exciting.

Good morning. Can I help you? Yes please, I want to buy a shirt. What size are you? Er.... 15, I think. And what colour would you like? Well, my favourite colour is blue. But I’ve got a blue shirt. Have you got anything green? How about this? It’s one of the shirts in the sale. It’s only £12. Er... it doesn’t look very fashionable. I want the shirt for a party. Oh, I see. Well, what about this light brown one? It’s very attractive. Mmm. I don’t really like brown. Or there’s this purple one.... That looks better. Can I try it on? Yes, certainly. (fade out) (Later) How does it fit? It’s perfect. How much is it? £18. £18. I think that’s all right. Can I phone my parents to check? Of course. You can use our phone.
by coach to London. In London we’re taking the Eurostar train to Paris, and from Paris we take another train to Orléans, where our exchange school is. We arrive at about 6 o’clock in the evening, and the teachers and students of the school are meeting us at the station. You are all staying with a different French family, and you are coming home on Friday the 14th. You don’t have to take any special clothes for the trip, but a French phrase book is a good idea, and remember you have to have a valid passport to go to France. Another thing ... the cost. The total cost of the trip is £130 per student. You don’t have to pay this until April, but you have to bring a deposit of £20 to school next week. Is that clear? Now, are there any questions?

What have you got there, Vicky? It’s an invitation for Jack’s party. That’s nice. When is it? It’s on June the 1st. So what’s happening? Are you all going out for a pizza again? No, no, the party’s in his garden. That’s nice. I hope the weather stays fine. He’s having a barbecue. I love barbecues! And who’s cooking? His mum, I suppose. No. Jack is! And his dad’s helping him. How many people are going? About 15, I think. You must take a present. A book, perhaps, or a CD. I know what he wants, Mum. The new Star Wars video. I see. Can you give me the money to buy it? Well... OK, yes, I suppose I can.
Unit 7, exercise 7 Good morning, everyone. I’ve got some more information about our school trip to France in May. So please listen and take notes. You can ask questions when I finish.
