Chapter One Damien Aldermann, Earl of Royston, left his curricle with his tiger, Henry, and climbed the steps to Lord Norton’s front door. Lord Norton had sent a letter to London requesting his presence as soon as possible. Damien still had difficulty believing the contents of the message. The old man’s mind must be slipping to believe his daughter had returned from the dead. It shouldn’t take Damien long to find out the truth. As soon as he did, he’d return to London. Pushing away his annoyance, he knocked. “Welcome, Lord Royston.” The butler stood back for Damien to enter. “Lord Norton is in his study.” He followed the butler down the corridor. He might have hesitated getting involved if he hadn’t promised his father that he’d watch out for his friend. But he had, and he liked Lord Norton. The butler announced him, and Damien entered the large, book-lined study. The older man stood and stepped around his desk to greet him. “I’m glad you responded promptly to my request. I was afraid, since you were in London, that it might be several weeks before you could visit. I wanted to share my good news with you as soon as possible.”

“You wrote that your daughter had arrived from Spain. I thought she’d died fifteen years ago, when the ship carrying her and her mother sank.” “We all did. It’s a miracle.” Lord Norton’s wrinkled face beamed with happiness. A miracle or a clever sham. Damien had heard all about the loss of Lady Norton and her young daughter. She’d been going home to Spain after receiving news that her husband had died in the war. An incorrect observation, but those were sometimes made during the battles with Napoleon. Now, another incredible tale. Poor Norton had grieved his loss for many years and was easy prey to such a hoax. “How did she survive?” Damien asked. “A childless couple took her in and raised her.” Lord Norton frowned. “They just recently told her about her true heritage. I’m thankful for that.” “Does she have evidence of who she is?” Damien persisted. Lord Norton smiled. “You’re very much like your father. You’ve made a fine earl, clever, checking on everything, responsible.” He put his hand on Damien’s shoulder. “Sometimes, you just have to trust your instincts. Ah, I see your frown. But wait until you see how much she resembles her mother.” “I’m to meet her today?” “Yes, yes. She and her companion have gone riding. They’ll be back shortly. Sit. Have a cup of coffee. In fact, let’s go into the grand salon, where my wife’s portrait is hung. Then when my daughter comes in, you’ll see the resemblance.” They’d barely sat down and taken a sip of coffee before Damien heard female voices, a soft laugh, and the butler directing them to the salon. He kept his eyes on the door, anxious to see this imposter. “Father.” A young woman rushed into the room, bringing with her the light fragrance of fresh air and lilacs. A slightly older woman followed close behind. The younger woman hugged Lord Norton. “The estate is as lovely as you described, Father. Your steward took

us all the way to the property line.” She glanced around and saw Damien. “Oh, excuse me. I’m interrupting you.” “Not at all. Join us. I’d like you to meet my best friend’s son. My friend died last year and Damien has been watching over me ever since.” Lord Norton motioned for Damien to step closer. “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Damien Charles Aldermann, Earl of Royston, my daughter, Annabelle Collette.” Lord Norton beamed with pride. “She prefers to be called Belle, and I think the name suits her well. And her companion.” He motioned to the other woman. “Madame Teresa Diaz.” Lord Norton’s daughter, or the imposter as Damien believed, was beautiful, with large, violet, almond-shaped eyes and masses of wavy black hair. When she smiled directly at him, his body went hot with desire, much to his chagrin. Where had that come from? Certainly, her curvy figure and cream-colored skin added to her allure, but he was not a young, inexperienced boy. He was certainly used to seeing beautiful women around London and often in his bed. “You have made your father very happy, suddenly appearing on his doorstep after all this time,” Damien said. She hugged her father’s arm. “I am happy too. As soon as I discovered my true identity, I knew I had to find my English father. Not that my adopted father and mother didn’t treat me well. They did, but a person wants to know where she comes from.” “Your adopted father? I doubt a court would let a man adopt another man’s child without doing a thorough examination of the circumstances.” Damien saw Lord Norton frown and start to speak. “It is all right, Father.” Annabelle put her hand on his arm. “I understand there will be people who do not believe my claim.” She frowned at Damien. “My Spanish father rescued me from the sinking ship.” She lowered her eyes. “He wasn’t able to rescue Mama. He had been on board and was on his way home to Spain. Afterward, he tried to contact Lord Norton but heard he’d been killed in the war. He only recently discovered his mistake.”

At a very convenient time, when the man had been sick and was frail and needy for someone to love. Damien didn’t voice his thought, not wanting to antagonize a man he’d become very fond of this past year. The woman obviously preyed on the earl’s hope that someday his wife and daughter would appear. He’d never totally accepted his loss. “Look, Damien.” Lord Norton pointed to the large painting over the fireplace. “See how much Belle favors her mother.” Damien raised his eyes to the painting he’d seen many times. Lady Norton’s portrait had been painted right after her marriage. A gentle smile crossed her face, tipping up the corners of full, rosy lips. Her long black hair fell in waves around bare shoulders, her skin the same creamy, warm tone of this supposed daughter. But her eyes were dark brown like her husband’s. Where had the violet eyes come from? In the painting, Lady Norton was dressed in a red gown, cut low to expose her shoulders and the top of lush breasts. She’d had a fuller figure than the young woman impersonating her daughter. “You are still not convinced, Lord Royston?” Belle asked. Her eyes sparked with defiance, and her whole body was held in a position of challenge. “Let us say, I am not easily persuaded from my initial impressions.” The others in the room seemed to fade away as Damien and Belle studied each other. Her breasts rose enticingly with each quick breath. A soft flush heated her cheeks. She was angry. Good. Angry people made mistakes, and he intended to watch closely for every untoward word or action. He quirked an eyebrow at her. Her eyes widened, and he smiled. He intended to expose her as a fraud. **** Belle found herself mesmerized by this haughty man. He held his tall, lean body rigidly straight. Sunbeams, shining in through the

windows, caught in thick auburn hair that looked tousled from the wind and almost made him look approachable until you noted his strong jaw, chiseled cheekbones, and those cool gray eyes that challenged her. She swallowed, and that penetrating gaze moved from her face to her neck, then lower. A hot flush heated her cheeks. Her heart fluttered in her throat. No man had caused such a response before and certainly not with just a look. She told herself she didn’t like this man, but her body responded anyway. “Damien.” Lord Norton broke the spell. “Do join us for dinner.” She watched him hesitate. Part of her hoped he wouldn’t stay, and part of her hoped he would. He kept his gaze on her when he answered. “Thank you, I will. I have to return to London tomorrow. This will be my only chance to visit for a while.” “I’m sorry you have to leave so soon,” Lord Norton said. “But, we’ll also travel to London in about a week. Belle’s companion, Madame Diaz, and my sister, Claire, will insure Belle is properly prepared to meet the queen and then society.” Lord Norton smiled at Belle. “My health has not been good these past six months. I want to see her safely married to a man I approve of before my demise.” “Father.” Belle hurried to his side. “I don’t need a husband. We discussed this earlier today.” Lord Norton brushed a hand over her cheek. “Yes, you do, my dear. A woman alone in this world is in a very precarious situation. My title will go to my deceased brother’s son, as well as the estate.” He held up his hand to stop her words. “I know best. My money alone will not protect you.” Belle held in the anger. Spain or here, both fathers had the same answer, marriage. She’d hoped to have a better outcome with her English father. But there was still time to change his mind.

If he would give her one of his small estates, she’d be fine. Then she could hide more easily from the man she feared. Seclusion was a small price to pay for safety.

Chapter Two The very air snapped with curiosity as Damien gazed at the entrance to the ballroom. He’d heard Lady Annabelle would attend, but she was one of the last to arrive. Suddenly, people parted like a giant wave flowing backward. Lady Blake’s annual spring ball was a huge success, if you went by the crush of people. With the new guest in attendance, it was a certainty. Annabelle had taken the ton by surprise, both with her beauty and her fascinating tale. This past month she’d been introduced to the queen and invited to Almack’s and many social events. At least, she always seemed to be present at the ones he attended. He hated how his body betrayed him and responded each time he saw her. Now, she stood under the globe lights, her jet-black hair in shiny ringlets around her face. Damien’s gaze roamed across skin the color of thick cream to the faint blush on her cheeks. Violet eyes smiled and silently mocked the world simultaneously. Men swarmed around, jostling each other to hang on her every word. She controlled them as a great maestro would his orchestra, a smile to one, a gentle tap on the arm with her lacey fan to another. They were besotted fools. Irritation washed over him. She was not what she pretended, and he would unmask her. It was the least he could do for Lord Norton. Spurred on by his belief, Damien stepped forward to confront the lady or charlatan, whichever she was. ****

Belle stopped in the entrance to straighten her shoulders and prepare herself. It was performance time. She licked dry lips, the only evidence of her inner turmoil. Normally, she’d avoid crowds and only attended these functions because it pleased her father. She longed for the countryside but knew she must at least pretend to look for a husband. The men flocked to her, except for the cold, condescending Earl of Royston. As soon as she entered the room, she felt the heat from his stare. She knew if she looked in his direction, she’d find his gaze on her, his full, sensuous mouth held in a tight line of disapproval. He represented danger and temptation. Nevertheless, she would not allow him to distract her. Suddenly, the crowd around her parted, and her nemesis strolled toward her. He’d dressed in his usual black. The only contrasting color, the white of his shirt and the blood ruby pin in his fancy neck cloth. A sardonic smile curved his lips, and she couldn’t help thinking how well his name, Damien, fit him. He was her Devil. “Lady Annabelle, I believe this is our dance.” His firm voice sent shivers down her spine. The band began to play a waltz. She brought her fan across her face, leaving only her eyes exposed to his hard stare. “Did we have a prior arrangement, my lord?” She moved the fan down, allowing her dimpled smile to show. Deliberately, she wet her lips and took a breath. The brief flare in those enticing eyes was almost undetectable, but she noted the flecks of gold wavering in his dark gray eyes. “Ah, I remember. I did promise you this waltz.” Her voice sounded husky to her. He held out his arm. She placed her gloved hand on hard muscle. The other gentlemen’s faint protests followed them as Belle and Damien walked onto the dance floor. His warm hand curved at her waist as he guided her unerringly around the other couples.

Damien danced with control and elegance. Easy to follow, his guidance led her into dips and turns. Her lilac gown fluttered around her. With quick steps, he moved her toward the tall French windows. Before she realized his intent, they were out on the verandah. “What are you doing, my lord?” Belle asked. “Please take me back inside.” She hoped he hadn’t heard the quiver in her voice. “It’s time we talked.” Belle moved toward the door. He caught her arm. She looked down at his hand, then up at him. “Let me go!” “Not yet. You’ll answer my questions first. This is the only opportunity I’ve had to speak with you alone.” Belle snapped her fan open between them, as though it would protect her. “You can’t always hide behind others and things,” he warned. “I want to know your true identity and why you’ve involved my friend, Lord Norton.” “You know who I am. After the death of my adopted mother, Papa, my adopted father, told me about Lord Norton, my real parent. He purchased passage for me to return to England and meet the father I’d never known.” She pulled her lace shawl tighter around her shoulders. In the light cast from candles glowing in the garden, Belle tried to see his expression. She was tall, but next to his long, lean body she felt small and dainty. Waves of heat coursed through her as they had when she’d first seen him in her father’s study two months ago. “I heard your story, but unlike Lord Norton, I don’t believe you.” “It isn’t necessary for you to believe. You are of no consequence to me.” She lied. Her hands wanted to reach out and touch the strong face hovering above her, to trace the line of his rigid jaw to his full lips. Her mouth yearned to move against his, and yet, she must fight him and this fascination she’d developed. “You will be exposed to the world for the imposter you are. I will not fail to protect my father’s friend.”

17
Shrugging, she let the shawl fall, exposing her low neckline. The new pearls, a gift from her father, were cool against her skin. She noted the slight change in Damien’s breathing and the increasing tension in his body. She moved closer and stared directly into his eyes. **** His blood coursed through his veins and he clenched his teeth. Every part of his being wanted to ravish her, to plunder those pink lips she’d turned enticingly toward him. His hands yearned to cup her luscious breasts and run his fingers across the sweet body hidden beneath the satin gown. Her lilac fragrance wafted through him. He put his hands on her arms to push her further away, but instead he surprised himself when he pulled her closer and wrapped his arms around her body. Without thought, only hunger, he took her lips, parting them and raking his tongue across the sweet, moist interior of her mouth. His hand brushed the side of her soft breast. He nibbled at the creamy skin of her neck. She tasted sweet as honey. Small hands raked through his hair, seeming to encourage his behavior. The music and people were drowned out by their own swirling desire. He bent to lift her, to take her deeper into the garden. Thankfully, the French windows opening brought him to his senses. With one swift move, he stepped back. She swayed, but quickly recovered and pulled her shawl around her arms and across her breasts. “My lord, we must go back.” He detected the slight catch in her voice and applauded her bravado. She was quick. Her eyes challenged him. “Our conversation has ended, Lord Royston. If you have further questions, take them directly to my father.” He put out his arm and walked inside with her. He escorted her to her chaperone, who looked annoyed.

“We only went outside for a breath of fresh air, Teresa,” Belle said, her voice breezy and under control. “Thank you for the dance, Lord Royston.” Damien bowed to both ladies. “Lady Annabelle,” he said. “We’ll meet again, I’m sure. I look forward to our next encounter.” She raised her fan, her eyes mocking him. “I, too, my lord.” Her silver laughter tingled along his nerve endings as she turned to greet several gentlemen flocking to her. Damien walked across the room to greet his friend, Lord Jeremy Hawthorne. “Did you find out anything?” Jeremy asked. “You were outside long enough to raise a few eyebrows, including her chaperone’s.” “She insists she is his long-lost daughter. The woman’s a good actress. I can’t seem to trip her up in her story.” “Maybe she’s telling the truth,” Jeremy said. “Very unlikely. Somehow she found out about Lord Norton’s family and his ill health and has taken advantage of the circumstances. It is too convenient that she arrives just when he has had this bout with his heart. She’s taking advantage of an old man’s hopes and dreams. You know he never remarried, never forgot his wife or daughter.” “She does look a bit like him and the pictures we’ve seen of his late wife,” Jeremy added. “As his daughter, she would be the sole heir to all his fortune that isn’t attached to the title and estate. That includes several smaller houses and a good deal of money. I don’t plan to stand by and see him fleeced by this imposter, no matter how lovely she is.” The words slipped out before Damien realized what he’d said. Jeremy grinned. “Did I just hear you admit to finding her attractive?” Damien frowned at his friend. “Her beauty is obvious to us all. See how the men flock around her.”
The Earl’s Intriguing Imposter
19
Jeremy turned from viewing the dance floor, to look directly at Damien. “But you are immune to her? What will happen when you expose the lady as a fraud?” “I suppose she’ll return to wherever she came from, unless charges are brought against her.” The words sounded hollow to his ears. He remembered the taste, smell, and feel of her. He had never allowed anyone to get inside his defenses and he didn’t intend to let it happen now. Lovelier ladies than she had enticed him. He’d always managed to walk away, whenever he wanted. Why should it be any different with this woman? He glanced around the room. She was dancing with a young man known about town for his clever charm and a habit of gambling. He’d better warn Lord Norton that the man was making a play for his alleged daughter. The rogue wasn’t the sort Lord Norton would approve of for her husband. His jaw tightened at the thought of any man marrying her, touching her, anyone other than him. His head jerked back, and he immediately banished the thought. Never. He’d marry when he absolutely had to, for an heir. When he did, he’d choose a nice biddable debutante. Not a woman who both frustrated and tantalized him at the same time. A woman he didn’t trust or want—well, perhaps his body wanted her. He’d cure himself of that. It had been too long since he’d visited his mistress. He’d go tonight. But first he’d have one more dance with Lady Annabelle. Damien skirted the dance floor and joined Madame Diaz, the companion. “Are you enjoying the ball? Perhaps I could get you a drink of lemonade?” Madame Diaz eyed him with suspicion. “I’m fine, thank you.” “I was wondering how long you’ve known Lady Annabelle? You are rather young to be a companion.” “I’m a widow. It is quite proper for me to chaperone Lady Annabelle.” She frowned at Damien and turned away, looking around the dance floor.
20

“Then you are in on this scheme to rob Lord Norton?” The woman gasped and faced him with anger evident in her eyes and from the way she held her body. “There is no plan to harm her father in any way.” Her Spanish accent thickened. “You are an evil man to think such. Go away.” He laughed. “You are both good actresses, but I am not as gullible as Lord Norton. I’m warning you, I won’t stand by and see him fleeced.” The woman trembled, whether from her anger or fear, he wasn’t sure. But, for a moment, he thought she might hit him with her reticule. “What is going on?” Belle asked, returning from the dance floor. She thanked her dance partner and then turned back to Madame Diaz. “What has he done to upset you?” She glared at Damien. Even bristling with anger, she was beautiful, maybe even more so. Damien smiled and shrugged. “I’m sure she’ll feel better when I leave. Shall we dance one more time? Then I promise to depart the premises.” **** Belle glanced from her companion, who was shaking her head, to the man who smelled of musky cologne. She should turn her back on him, but the temptation to be held in his arms once more was too great. She put out her hand. Music flowed over them as they whirled and dipped. His warm hand clasped hers firmly, and occasionally their bodies briefly brushed during the dance. In spite of disliking him, she felt safe in his arms, protected, secure. Her body constantly responded to his touch, his smell, that smile that said he didn’t trust her, but tempted her to entice him closer. A fleeting sadness washed over her when the music stopped. If only they’d met under different circumstances, but in this instance, he was as dangerous to her plan as he was to her heart.

**** Damien returned her to Madame Diaz’s side, bowed, and strode across the room. Excusing himself to Jeremy, he continued briskly to the door, stopping only to speak with the hostess. Climbing into his barouche carriage, he gave his driver his mistress’s address and settled back against soft cushions. She would be pleased to see him and take his mind completely off of the impertinent Annabelle. He hoped. Right now it was hard to banish the pictures in his mind of his beautiful, violet-eyed dancing partner. Memories of her luscious body brushing against him, her subtle, perfumed fragrance, and her own special essence floating around them filled his head. He mustn’t fall for her charm. Only he stood between Lord Norton and whatever nefarious plan she’d concocted. But, if he was honest, he already knew this visit to his mistress would be a failure. Nothing would take away this desire for Annabelle, nothing but burying himself in her softness. **** After Damien left, the rest of the evening seemed rather uninteresting. Belle was happy when her companion suggested they return home. Staring out the carriage window, Belle remembered her interactions with Damien. She hated admitting how attracted she was to him. He obviously thought her a thief trying to steal from his friend, but from his behavior she knew he was as drawn to her as she to him. A feeling of relief swept over her when the carriage pulled to the curb. She always felt safer when at home with her father. Although, even he might not be able to protect her.
22

Her father had waited up. “My dear, how was your evening?” His eyes glowed when he looked at her. “You mean did I meet a gentleman I’d like to marry? No. None of them are as pleasing as you, Father. Please change your mind and let us return to the country.” A frown wrinkled his forehead. He set aside his book, stood, then walked to her side. “I don’t understand this determination you have to stay unmarried.” His fingers tipped up her chin. “Most young ladies are anxious to meet the right gentleman, marry, and have their own home. Surely among all the eligible men, you must have been introduced to one that pleases you?” Belle sensed Teresa start to say something. She gave her a warning glance. “I won’t change my mind, Father.” Belle stood on her tiptoes and brushed his cheek with a kiss. “I’m tired. We’ll talk more tomorrow.” It all seemed hopeless. What was she to do? Belle and Teresa trudged up the stairs. Belle said good night at her door and started inside. Teresa put her hand on Belle’s arm and stopped her. “Eres mi amiga intima. You are my closest friend, and I worry for your safety. You must speak with your father. Tell him what you fear,” Teresa said, concern etched across her face. “I cannot worry him. You have seen how weak he is. I fear for his health. If only I trusted Lord Royston more, I’d talk with him.” “He does not trust you and is looking for a way to discredit you with your father. You must be careful. Lord Royston is a dangerous man.” “I know. I will think about what you have said. Go to bed, dear friend. Perhaps I can convince Father to take us back to the country.” Belle hugged Teresa, then entered her bedroom. She sank into the chair by her window and covered her face with her hands. Tears rolled down her cheeks, and she tasted the salt of them in her mouth. She wanted to sob but feared being heard by someone who would tell her father. He’d demand an explanation.
The Earl’s Intriguing Imposter
23
Going over to her dressing table, she poured water into a basin and splashed her face. After drying her cheeks, she stared into the mirror. Men said she was beautiful, but what good was that? She’d rather be plain and have one man who really loved her and not because of her father’s wealth. She’d been so sure coming to England and finding her father would give her protection and peace. Instead, she found him sick and his friend bent on convincing everyone she was an imposter. She had no idea how to prove her claim. Now she had two men to protect herself from, unless she could convince Lord Royston to believe in her. Her maid knocked on the door before entering. Belle forced a smile on her face and tried to be patient and hold in her restlessness until her maid finished helping her dress for bed. After she left, Belle paced the floor. Felipe would have discovered that she’d sailed for London by now. His determination to marry her and her Spanish father’s agreement had frightened her. She’d lied. Papa had never told her of her true identity. She’d found the papers when going through her mother’s letters after her death. Belle stared out her bedroom window, remembering her hurt and confusion when she’d confronted Papa about her discovery. He’d admitted what happened years ago and assured her of his love for her. Nevertheless, she’d still feared he’d want her to marry Felipe. She’d had some money saved and after convincing Teresa to travel with her, they’d gone shopping and slipped away. Her heart had beat doubletime while they waited for the ship to sail, but apparently no one thought to check the port. Only after connecting with her real father had she begun to feel a little safe. Tell him the truth. No, she’d seen the pallor of his skin and didn’t want to do anything that might cause him distress. If only Damien trusted her more she’d take him in her confidence, but he didn’t. He’d made that quite clear. And yet, for some reason, she felt safer in his company. His very presence gave off an aura of command, control,
24

and the ability to protect the ones he cared about. Look how he tried to take care of her father. Reluctantly and with much skepticism, she’d begun to like him. She wrapped her arms around her middle. The walls of her room seemed to close in on her. In spite of the fire crackling in the fireplace, cold air sent shivers across her shoulders. Felipe was close. She just knew it. His determination to join Papa’s successful business with his own burned in him. She’d seen the fire in his eyes, not for her, but for his greed to be the most powerful man in their corner of Spain. Felipe also pretended to be kind and caring to her, but he delighted in hurting her in unseen ways when others weren’t looking. If she put out her hand in courtesy, his would tighten on hers just enough to cause pain. Sometimes he’d manage to casually touch her in such a way that caused her to flinch. He threatened that if she said anything to anyone, he’d kidnap her and do much worse. She believed him. He had put fear in her regarding all men, and she was determined not to be dependent on one, whatever the cost. Surprisingly, she did trust her real father. In him, she saw kindness and sincere goodness to all. If only they might agree on her future, but he seemed determined to see her wed. Her plan to retire in the country, with Teresa as her companion, was not going as she’d hoped. She shivered, again. If they stayed in London much longer, the man she feared most would find her. **** Lord Norton watched until Belle walked out of sight. He had a plan, but wasn’t sure how to make it work. He had to act soon. He’d noted his shortness of breath just rising from the chair and his tiredness simply walking across the room. His father had died at fiftyfive, after having similar problems. Norton knew that although he was only fifty, his days were rapidly coming to an end. Belle had to be
The Earl’s Intriguing Imposter
25
kept safe, protected. There was only one man he trusted enough to put her in his care. Convincing the man to agree would be a difficult task, but he couldn’t afford to fail. Sitting back down in front of the fire, Lord Norton took a sip of brandy. He’d known instinctively that Belle was his daughter. There was a way to prove her identity, but he, of course, had not asked to see the tiny birthmark since it was located in an area not visible when dressed. He’d never shared Damien’s belief that she was an imposter, but she was frightened and hiding something. How to find out the truth? The first time he’d seen fear in her eyes, he’d asked what troubled her. She told him he was mistaken, that she only needed to rest. He wasn’t wrong and he intended to see her protected from whatever brought that expression to her lovely eyes, eyes that reminded him so much of his grandmother. Damien, although he’d never admit it, was attracted to Belle and she to him. The air sizzled whenever they were in the same room. Norton was not such a fool as to miss the signs. Now, to make them admit their desire for each other. A daunting task, but not an impossible one.

Chapter Three Damien stepped out of the watchmaker’s shop. He stopped and stared across the street. Yes, it was Annabelle and her companion coming out of Hookham’s circulating library. The wind blew her rose gown against soft curves. Curls left exposed by her small, pert bonnet lifted in the breeze. His breath caught. His body reacted to just the sight of her. Going to his mistress last night had been an utter failure. He’d had no desire to even kiss the woman who’d held his interest for the past year, and he’d stayed less than half an hour before leaving unsatisfied. Glancing at the traffic, he maneuvered around a cart and carriage to cross the street and greet the woman who tormented him. “Lady Annabelle and Madame Diaz, good morning.” Damien kept his tone light. He caught the questioning glance from Annabelle. “You are certainly cheerful, Lord Royston,” Belle said. “It’s an unusually pleasant day.” He motioned toward the blue sky. “Might I entice you ladies to join me at Gunter’s for ices?” Belle hesitated, and Madame Diaz looked troubled. He waited patiently. “Thank you, we will join you for refreshments.” Belle seemed not to notice the frown directed at her from her companion. The desire to step closer and touch her tempted Damien. Instead, he put out his arm to each lady and escorted them to the shop. He managed to find them a table near the door, where they could watch people pass by or come in. On his return from ordering their ices, he stopped, caught by an expression on Belle’s face. She’d been looking outside, when her body suddenly stiffened and her face paled. She

turned away from the window and put her hand to the side of her head, distress evident in her face and body. “Lady Annabelle,” Damien said, hurrying to her side. “Are you all right?” “Ah, no, I don’t feel well.” She licked her lips. “Would you walk us to our carriage? The driver is waiting just up the street.” “Wait here. I know your father’s carriage. I’ll go and have the driver meet you here.” “No!” She reached out a hand to stop him. “Please stay with us.” He stared into eyes darkened with fear and noted the slight tremble in her body. “What is the matter? You’re frightened.” “Please, just take us to our carriage.” “All right.” He moved quickly, canceling their order and hurrying them out the door. He glanced up and down the street. The walkways were crowded, but nothing seemed amiss. What had upset her? He intended to find out. Belle kept her head lowered and insisted on walking between her companion and him. There was definitely a mystery here. He’d always loved solving puzzles even as a small boy, and he was good at finding out the answers. When he touched her soft, delicate hand, she glanced up at him. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes clouded with fear. The need to protect her overwhelmed him and warred with his desires to taste her, touch her, and bury himself deep inside her body. As though she read his thoughts, her rosy lips curved slightly and a cool light came into her petal soft irises. Hot need slammed into him. **** Belle took a relieved breath when they were safely inside the landau. She turned to Damien, who stood beside the carriage. “Will you escort us home?” She saw the questions in his eyes and hoped

he’d wait until they were safe at her father’s house before asking them. She didn’t doubt he would take the opportunity to quiz her. Damien swung inside and sat across from her and Teresa. “I’ve already directed your driver to take me to where I left my curricle. I’ll tell my driver to follow us.” “Thank you.” She sank back into the recess of the carriage and prayed the shadows hid her from view. “Are you going to tell me what really happened?” Damien leaned toward her. “I don’t believe you are unwell. I’d guess more frightened than anything else.” “Really, I’m just overcome by the many changes in my life.” “You chose to seek them,” Damien reminded her. The arrogant earl was back. His steely gray, probing eyes showed his suspicions. If only she hadn’t had to depend on him. But, thank goodness Damien had been nearby when she saw Felipe strolling down the walk scrutinizing every woman he passed. She knew he had to be searching for her, but she hadn’t expected to see him so close, so soon. She’d ducked her head and hoped he’d missed her. It wasn’t enough. They had to get out of London before he spotted her and tried to take her back to Spain. If that happened, he’d force their marriage and she’d be lost forever. Belle studied the man sitting across from her. He watched out the window, and she took the time to admire the way his dark blue coat fit snug across his broad shoulders and his trim, long-legged body encased in matching pantaloons sent an aching need inside her. She wanted to run her fingers through his thick auburn hair and kiss that firm, determined mouth. She wanted to cuddle close to him for protection. Why she thought he’d protect her, she had no idea, but she did. How much could she trust her own impressions of him, when this strange longing muddled her thoughts? Felipe was here, and she had no time left. She must trust someone, and she didn’t want to upset her father. Damien seemed her only choice. She glanced out of the other window and looked behind them.

There were few carriages around as they drew to the curb in front of her father’s town house. Damien stepped out first and helped the two of them down. Showing no sign of leaving, he followed them inside. “I’d like to speak with Lord Norton,” Damien said to the butler. Belle grabbed his arm before he started down the corridor. “Please don’t say anything to Father. I can see he is unwell, and he mustn’t be upset in any way.” He stared down at her and didn’t answer. “Oh, all right. I’ll talk with you. Just don’t worry my father.” **** Damien nodded and continued on his way to her father’s study. If he didn’t tell Lord Norton about her fearful episode today, then perhaps she might trust him enough to share her secret. He knocked on the study door and entered when Lord Norton called out. “Good day, sir,” he said. “How are you feeling?” “Better. Having Belle around has given me such happiness. I believe she’s been good medicine. What brings you to visit this early in the day?” Lord Norton asked. “Actually, I saw Lady Annabelle and her companion leaving the bookstore and invited them to join me for refreshments. But, before we could enjoy any, Lady Annabelle began to feel unwell. I’ve escorted them home.” He put up his hand. “Not to worry, she’s fine now. Probably all the different food and the excitement of the last month,” Damien quickly added. Lord Norton had started to rise out of his chair and now sat back with a sigh of relief. “I’m thankful you were with them. You are sure she’s all right?” “I assure you, she is. She didn’t want me to tell you, but I thought it best you knew. She is worried about your health.” “See,” Lord Norton said. “There’d be no concern for my welfare if she wasn’t my child.”

Damien shrugged. “Perhaps I’ve been hasty in my disbelief.” He noted a lessening of tension in his friend. He still wasn’t sure Lady Annabelle wasn’t just an excellent actress, but he’d not add to Lord Norton’s distress. She was right about one thing, Lord Norton’s health was obviously not good. Damien noted the pale color to his friend’s usual tan skin and the tremble in his hands that he couldn’t hide. “I’ve been thinking about returning to the country.” Lord Norton’s words broke into Damien’s thoughts. “We arrived in London late in the season, and Belle wants to leave. I had hoped she’d find a gentleman she liked enough to marry, but she is fighting me about that.” Preferring to ignore the relief Lord Norton’s words gave him, Damien kept his expression neutral. Of course she’d fight her father about marriage. A husband would be in control of her money and any estates she inherited. Yet, why be concerned about her father’s demise? If Lord Norton died soon, she’d not be pushed into matrimony. The girl was an enigma. None of the puzzle pieces fit, and he wasn’t sure what to believe about Annabelle. “I’m determined,” Lord Norton said. “When I’m gone she’ll need a strong man to care for her and protect her. You know a lone woman, especially one with money, is a magnet for all the wrong type of men. Since she won’t choose, I’ll have to. I’ll pick a man I trust and present him to her. I hate to use my ill health to get her agreement, but I will, if needed. One way or the other my daughter will be safe.” “Have you a person in mind?” Damien couldn’t stop himself from asking. Lord Norton leaned back in his chair, took off his spectacles, and wiped them with his handkerchief. At first, Damien thought he wouldn’t answer. Then, he leaned forward and smiled. “Why the man I trust the most of course. Who else would I give my precious daughter to but you, Damien?” ****

Belle saw Damien waiting when she returned downstairs. Her dismay must have shown on her face because he raised an eyebrow at her. “You didn’t think I’d leave without our talk, did you?” “I’d hoped,” she said in a burst of honesty. He laughed and motioned her toward the small sitting room located near the bottom of the stairs. It was obvious he did not intend to leave until she talked to him. But what could she say? The truth? Would he even believe her? The snap of the door shutting had her turning around. The expression in his gray eyes made her heart quicken. Desire heated her skin. His lean, tightly leased body prowled toward her. She gulped. “I think you must leave the door open. Unless you don’t fear Father saying you’ve compromised me. He is determined to marry me off. He might use any tactics available.” Her words came out in a nervous rush. “He trusts me, and I thought you’d rather not have others overhearing our conversation.” “What do you want to know?” Belle asked, hoping to stall the inevitable. The air between them sizzled. A sweet ache formed in her lower abdomen as Damien continued to stroll in her direction. Power and determination cloaked him as surely as the brown coat he wore. This was not a man to trifle with, but she was almost certain most men and women would find him trustworthy. His hand reached out and caressed the side of her face. She trembled and sighed. His eyes went to her mouth. His thumb gently traced along her bottom lip. When she opened her mouth to speak, he kissed her. His lips were warm and firm, and his tongue swept inside. He tasted of coffee and spice, arousing fevered desires. His fingers slid through her styled hair, bringing the thick mass of waves

tumbling over her shoulders. All the air went out of her lungs, and her arms wrapped around him to keep from falling at his feet. Damien leaned back, and his searing glance sent pulsing pleasure to every inch of her body. Burning heat flushed her face, and her breasts swelled when his dark eyes raked over them. The air seemed to hold its breath, and then he picked her up and carried her to a nearby sofa. He sat, cradling her in his lap. “I’ve wanted to do this since the last time I kissed you.” His lips nibbled along her neck. He unbuttoned the high collar to her gown and kissed the area where neck and shoulder met. More buttons came loose, and his mouth left a trail of fire wherever they touched. When his lips closed over her chemise and breast, Belle moaned and a delicious tension radiated to her lower abdomen. Hungry to touch him, she ran her fingers through his thick hair while he brushed aside her chemise and scraped his teeth over her nipple. A sound near the door brought them both quickly back to the present. Belle heard a muffled swear word and then strong, wide palms were covering her and buttoning her clothes. Damien stood, ran a hand through his hair, and briskly walked to the other side of the room. “I must apologize for my ungentlemanly manner.” His voice was husky. “It will not happen again. Perhaps we’d best leave our talk for another time.” He turned to face her, his handsome face drawn and his eyes dark as storm clouds. “I’d suggest you trust your father with your concerns. I believe he is strong enough to hear them and will find an answer for you.” “No. I can’t tell him. He’d worry and then really insist I marry.” She hesitated, then plunged ahead. “You are the only one I can trust to help me and not upset him. Please sit. I’ll tell you the truth.” ****

Embarrassed by his irresponsible behavior and her abrupt decision to trust him, Damien hesitated. “Por favor, please,” Belle corrected. He was unable to resist her pleas, the sweetness of her voice when her Spanish mixed with English. He nodded and moved to the chair farthest from her. His body still ached for her, and he didn’t trust his own control. Her father’s announcement had shaken him, mainly because he realized he didn’t dislike the idea of marrying her. Her! A woman he believed to be an imposter, a fraud, and after Lord Norton’s money. Where had all his good sense gone that he’d want such a person for his wife? Obviously to his cock, which aroused and hardened each time he got close to her. His muscles had tensed as soon as he saw her come down the stairs. Her body swayed like a gentle wave over the steps, and her sweet smile and sensuous mouth sent him over the edge, something no other woman had ever succeeded in doing. He’d always prided himself on his control. “I’m not sure where to start,” Belle said, her sweet voice interrupting his thoughts. “Just start anywhere.” “My adopted, or Spanish, father, whichever you prefer, did not tell me about my real father. Until six months ago, I only had vague recollections of my life before Spain. Often I thought it was just a vivid dream. When Mother died, he asked me to sort through her things. Papa was not able to do it himself.” “All this time you’d been told nothing?” “There was little extended family, and no one ever hinted. Their friends always said how happy my parents were to have me after they’d almost given up hope of having a child. I was well cared for and loved.” “Yet something has sent you fleeing Spain in fear.” Belle took a deep breath. “Yes. I found my mother’s diary, and I suppose I shouldn’t have read it, but I did. Once I discovered the
34

truth, I confronted Papa. He admitted what I’d read was correct. He emphasized how much they loved me. He said they did check at first and thought Lord Norton was dead, as erroneously reported. Later, I’m not sure how much time had passed, but he discovered the error. By that time they were so attached to me they couldn’t give me up. Since I didn’t ask questions, it made it easy for them to forget I wasn’t their very own child.” Damien frowned, stood, and walked to a small side table, which held a crystal bottle of brandy and two glasses. “Do you want a drink?” He held the glass toward her. “No, gracias.” He poured a generous portion into the glass and took a sip. “I can understand his hesitation to not notify Lord Norton, but a responsible, good man would have done so anyway.” “He is a good man,” Belle said and tears filled her eyes. “Then why are you afraid of being found? You saw someone today, didn’t you? Someone who’s come to take you home.” “I am home.” “No, you’re not. You can’t come into a man’s life with no proof and insist you’re his daughter. This is not your home.” “It is.” Belle began to sob. Angry at himself for pushing her this hard, Damien strode to her side and knelt. He brushed her hair back from her damp face and kissed the tears away. She clung to him, her heart pounding against his chest. “Stop crying,” Damien said. “I’ll convince your father to take you to the country where you’ll be safe, at least for now. But tell me who is after you.” “Felipe Aznar. He’s a prominent businessman. He and Papa hoped to join their many enterprises into one large empire, through me.” “Marrying you to this Felipe would seal the deal.” She lowered her eyes and nodded.

35
“Why do you fear Felipe so much?” He noted her face paled again at his question. “He’s mean and he hurts me. I wanted to tell Papa, but I was afraid he’d say I’d misunderstood and his actions had occurred accidentally. Felipe is a widower. He has a very good reputation personally and in the business community.” Damien stood and paced to the window. He pulled back the heavy curtain, letting in what sunlight had managed to peek around the cloudy skies. “I’ll hire a man to find and follow him. What does he look like?” “He’s tall, thin, with black hair and dark brown eyes. He has a mustache and goatee. I don’t know what else to tell you, except he speaks very little English.” “That helps. You realize your father will have to know what is going on so he can arrange extra protection around you. No, don’t say anything.” Damien shook his head. “Trust me to tell him in such a way that he will not be unduly stressed. He’d be much more upset if you suddenly disappeared.” He waited for her to nod in agreement. “After I speak with your father, I’ll be leaving to see about hiring the man to look for this Felipe.” He stalked across the room and tipped up her face. “Don’t worry and don’t take any unnecessary chances before your father has time to hire extra men to guard you.” Then his lips descended, and he ravished her honey sweet mouth. Straightening, he pivoted and walked briskly out of the room. **** Belle touched her swollen lips. Damien’s musky, masculine scent swirled around her head and aroused a delicious hunger for him. She craved his touch, his taste, and his ability to calm her fears. And he’d promised she’d be able to return to the country.

If only she were certain that Felipe hadn’t seen her today, she’d feel safer, but she wasn’t sure. Although Damien was strong, he was a decent man. Felipe was rotten to the core and would go to any means to carry her back to Spain, where he’d have her under his control. Felipe loved to cause pain. She’d seen it in his eyes and felt it in his hands. Her stomach rolled, and she tasted bile. Felipe was determined. At a party just before she left Spain, she’d seen Felipe go out on the terrace with a man she’d never met. She’d moved closer, then followed them when she saw they’d walked along the darkened path away from the house. Her heart pounding, she’d moved silently in their direction until she heard their voices. Hiding behind a large tree she managed to overhear the conversation. “Get me the money or the truth will come out,” the stranger said. “You have no evidence. It will be my word against yours,” Felipe replied, an edge to his voice. “If you believe that, then you have nothing to worry about.” The stranger stopped talking and Belle started to creep away. “Wait,” Felipe said. “I’m to marry soon. I’ll have the money.” He laughed harshly. “Her father will be glad to pay me when he sees the bruises on his darling daughter. To keep her safe, he’ll pay anything.” “And if the marriage doesn’t happen?” the man asked. “I’ll kidnap her and he’ll still pay. So will she.” After hearing that conversation, Belle knew her only choice was to flee Spain and hope her English father could help her. Belle took several deep breaths to steady herself. After her first fright, she’d realized she wasn’t weak. She had to fight for her life. And so she had run. Felipe was in for a surprise if he thought she wouldn’t continue to fight for her freedom. She climbed the stairs to her room and dug under her shawls. Her hand touched the small pistol she’d brought with her. Felipe should know his own life was in danger if he threatened her or her new family. Determination and a fierce anger swept away her fears.

Chapter Four Belle had just left the stables when she saw Damien riding up. He hadn’t been around since they’d left town several weeks ago. She’d thought he was still in London. The suddenness of his appearance made her heart leap. His smile sent heat flooding through her veins. She tried to temper her expression so he wouldn’t see how much pleasure and comfort his being here gave her. True to his word, he had convinced her father to take her back to the country and to hire extra help, guards, who followed her everywhere she went when outside. Today, as she started out on her ride, a trusty guard followed a few feet behind. “Good morning,” Damien said, pulling up beside her. “I see the country air is agreeable to you. You look much happier in this setting.” “Thank you for talking with Father. He has done just as you suggested.” She motioned her head toward her escort. He studied her face. “Obviously, you’re not very happy with being followed everywhere.” “Right, but I understand it’s necessary.” Damien rode up to the guard and spoke to him. The man nodded, then turned back to the stable. “There,” Damien said. “I’ll be your escort for this ride.” “As if that’s any better,” she grumbled, but let a smile curve her lips. “I’ll race you across the pasture to the edge of the trees,” Damien said.

“I’m going to win,” Belle shouted as she took off. The wind blew across her face and grabbed at her hat. A bubble of joy spilled out in laughter, caused by a combination of blue skies, fresh air, a good horse to ride, and a handsome male escort. She had to admit she’d missed him. Already he’d made her day much brighter. She glanced across as Damien came abreast of her and began to pass. His auburn hair blew in the breeze, and a smile curved his strong, well-shaped mouth. He and his horse moved as one across the field. His muscled thighs clamped tight on the horse’s sides as the two flew past in graceful symmetry. He pulled up and greeted her as she arrived only seconds behind him. “You’re good. You almost beat me.” “I will yet. There’ll be another challenge.” “Would you like to visit my estate? If we go east from here, it’s not far. We can enjoy a meal, and then I’ll ride back with you afterwards.” She tipped her head, curious as to this sudden invitation. A tingle of excitement coursed through her at his intent gaze. “I’d need to let Father and Teresa know.” “I’ll send one of my men with a message. Why is your very dependable companion not with you?” Belle smiled. “She doesn’t care for riding. She rode with me before I had my guards because she felt it was her duty. I’ve assured her it isn’t necessary now, and she didn’t argue. Although, she might not be pleased to hear you’ve become my escort.” “A wise woman.” “Is that a threat?” Belle stared directly into those unreadable eyes. “Are you afraid?” “Of you?” She laughed. “Nunca, never.” And pulling on the reins, she galloped off toward the east. She wasn’t afraid of him, only of her reaction when they were together. She’d hoped when she saw him this time her heart would not race the minute he arrived and the day become brighter because of his

presence, but it did. Joy filled her body as she raced across the pasture, and it wasn’t all caused from the exuberance of the ride. **** Damien waited a moment and let her put some distance between them. You should be afraid of me, my lovely imposter. Time had not dimmed his desire or strengthened his control. He still wanted her, irrational though it might be. He’d hired a man to check on her story and had someone else searching for the man she feared. So far, both had been unsuccessful. Of course, it would take time to hear from the man he’d sent to Spain to find out about her past. If she told the truth about Felipe Aznar, where could the Spaniard be hiding? He urged his horse forward and galloped after Annabelle. With all his questions and suspicions, he still couldn’t ignore the need to take her and make her his. And he realized it wasn’t just her beauty that enticed him. She had a loveliness of spirit. He’d seen her caring for Lord Norton as they prepared to leave London. She’d watched him carefully to be sure he didn’t overtire himself and insisted they arrange to stop for the night on the way back to the country estate. She’d asked Damien to make reservations for them at an inn along their route. To make sure Lord Norton didn’t think she was doing it because of him, she said she and Teresa found riding in a carriage for many hours very tiring. Lord Norton had seen through her little excuse, but he agreed to do as she asked. Love shone on Lord Norton’s face whenever he looked at Annabelle. Damien hoped for his friend’s sake that he was wrong about her. For your own sake, too. Admit you want to believe her because you are also falling under her spell. Damien pushed his thoughts away and urged his stallion forward. He caught up with Belle, and they rode together toward his home. He watched her face when the house came into view. The large gray stone building sat on the highest hill and overlooked the rest of his

property. A glint of blue hinted of the lake on the back side of the manor house. Fluffy white clouds floated overhead, and a few cows could be seen in a pasture to their right. “It’s lovely,” Belle said. “Peaceful and regal all at the same time.” “Do you think you’d be happy living in the country with just a small village nearby?” She glanced around, questions in her eyes. “I mean your father rarely goes to London, and you are used to living much closer to a large town.” For a second, she had looked as though he was suggesting she live here, at his home, with him. A thoughtless remark on his part. Of course, he didn’t mean that at all. Or did he? More and more he felt he was fighting himself and his first impression of her. Was he afraid to admit he might be wrong? “How do you know that?” Belle asked, interrupting his thoughts. “I assumed if your father, in Spain, is a businessman, that he does not live far from his work.” Still suspicious, she squinted. “You’ll never believe me. Have you been checking on me?” “If I have, would you be surprised?” Annoyance replaced the happier expression she’d shown earlier. “I’d hoped after our last talk that you’d begun to trust me. But I see you are naturally a suspicious person.” “Not really, at least not until your arrival.” “Humph. Where is this meal you promised me?” He chuckled. “What an unladylike sound. Ride on. When we get to the house I’ll need to send a message to your father before he starts to worry.” At the steps to his home, Damien jumped off his horse and went to Annabelle. He wrapped his hands around her dainty waist and swung her to the ground. Her lilac fragrance went to his head, as did her womanly scent. Taking her hand, he escorted her up several steps to the large, wooden front door and left her in his housekeeper’s care.

Striding down the corridor, he headed to his study to write a message to Norton. After giving the note to his butler, to be sent right away, Damien strolled outside and around the walk toward a wide, stone sitting area that faced the lake. A curved walkway led from the terrace toward the west. Pink floribunda roses, edged with dwarf lavender, bloomed along the walk. The flowers scented the air with their delicate fragrance. Annabelle sat at a nearby table. Damien stopped and took the time to study her. Her curved lips hinted of a smile, and her body appeared truly relaxed. He’d never seen her so unguarded. Her dark green habit, trimmed in white lace, clung to her curvy body. A light breeze caressed thick black hair. He strode to her side. “How do you like my home?” “The landscape is beautiful, as is what I’ve seen of your house.” Damien stared across the manicured lawns. “My mother decorated our home. Father and I never wanted to change anything after her death. I suppose most of the rooms are outdated.” A gentle hand touched his arm. “Everything is lovely, and I understand about wanting things to stay the way they are. I still miss my mama very much.” He glanced down at her hand and then at violet eyes shiny with tears. Without thought, he pulled her up into his arms. She stiffened at first, then yielded against his frame. Her arms went around him, and she lay her head against his chest. He ran his hand over her hair. When she raised her face, he leaned down and brushed his lips over hers, tasting the salt of tears. “I’ve made you sad. I’m sorry.” Gently, he helped her back into her chair and sat across from her. “I’d meant for this to be a happy visit.” She sniffed and wiped her eyes. “It has been. Just sometimes I feel the loneliness of being in a foreign land and knowing Mama will never be here to advise me.”

“This is your father’s land, if you’re telling the truth.” “But still foreign to me,” she countered. Damien was relieved when the maid interrupted with their food and they began to talk of trivial topics. More and more he found himself liking her. He didn’t want to like her. She was an imposter. What if you’re wrong? He wasn’t, and he had to protect his friend. **** Belle enjoyed observing Damien’s expressions and listening to his deep, husky voice. She finished eating and leaned back. “Shall we go to the stables? You can see my horses before I escort you home.” “I’d like that.” Belle stood, taking hold of his arm. They strolled along the curved path in the direction of the lake. The blue water glistened in the distance. “Is your stable near the lake?” He grinned. “Only if you go the long way around.” She gave him a speculative stare before returning his smile. “Good. I really wanted to get a better view of the lake. Are those swans I see?” “Yes, there have been swans here for as far back as I can remember.” In this lighter mood, he had a magnetism to him, and Belle’s body hummed with longing for his touch. His masculine scent mixed with spice, and the fresh outdoors wafted around her head. His taut muscle under her hand and the smoldering fire in his eyes elicited an ache low in her abdomen. She wanted this man in a way she’d never known before, and that made him all the more dangerous. “You’re very quiet, Annabelle.” “Call me Belle.” “Annabelle suits you better. That’s what I prefer to call you and how I think about you.” “So you do think of me?” She threw him a flirty look.

“All the time—” She looked up in surprise and started to speak. “As I try to decide how to prevent you from hurting Lord Norton.” But he said the words lightly with a half smile on his lips. “What can I do to convince you otherwise?” A hint of sadness crossed his face, so quickly she wasn’t sure she really saw it. “I don’t know.” Changing the subject, Damien pointed out points of interest as they ambled along toward the stables. There were interesting mazes, a separate conservatory from the one in the house, and a creek that wound through the estate to feed the lake. Belle hoped to come back another time to walk through the mazes and view the plants in the conservatory. They finally reached the barn and stepped inside to coolness, where the light was much dimmer than the bright sunlight. Damien led her to the first stall and introduced her to his favorite horse. Other than the snort of the fine stallion in the small space and slight movements of the other horses, the barn was silent and empty. They walked slowly down the line of stalls, going deeper into the interior with each careful step. Belle sensed she was being led into temptation with Damien so close at her side. His masculine scent lured her senses into places she probably shouldn’t go. Perhaps he’d steal a kiss once they stopped. Perhaps she would. Anticipation coiled low in her stomach from just being close to him and all alone. At the last stall, Damien turned. His eyes flickered in the dim light, yet she saw simmering heat in his gaze. Slowly, one hand reached up and touched her face. His finger ran along her bottom lip, and she felt the vibrant sensation of that simple contact all the way to her toes. She wanted him to keep stroking her. Mesmerized by his movements, Belle stood quiet and still, allowing his overly familiar touch and craving more intimacy with each breath she took. Without warning, he leaned down and touched her mouth with his sensually sculptured lips. A basic, burning need surged through her the moment their lips came together. She’d

have fallen without his strong arms coming around and pulling her against his hard, muscled body. He devoured her mouth, moving his tongue between her lips, searching for her warmth. “I want you,” he murmured before delivering another amazing kiss that sent heat flowing through her body. She couldn’t catch her breath to respond. His words vibrated through every part of her. She was barely aware she nodded, as wild desire overwhelmed her. Strong arms swept her up and carried her over to a darkened corner. He sat her down, then grabbed a folded blanket hanging across the top of the nearest stall and spread it across the hay. Had he planned to seduce her? Truthfully, she didn’t care because she didn’t want him to let her go. He stepped close, his body leaning into hers. His lips nuzzled her neck and grazed across her mouth. When she sighed, he gently laid her on the soft cover and followed quickly with his strong body, pressing against her, sending her into a vortex of need, longing, and hot craving. His mouth plundered hers while his warm hands moved across the front of her gown, brushing against nipples that ached for his touch. His lips tasted her neck, and he began to unbutton her riding habit, exposing one breast. When his mouth closed over it, Belle moaned and held his head closer, while his tongue and teeth tantalized her. Shivers of desire sent an ache deep between her legs. Damien raised her up and, with her help, removed her riding habit, then her chemise. Cool air fluttered across her sensitive skin but only for a second. His heated glance warmed her as he took his time looking at her from her face down to her feet. His fingers ran lightly over the arch of her foot and up her calf. Warm lips skimmed the inside of her thigh, his tongue flicking out to taste her. Moving up, his breath blew softly over the soft hairs covering her lower lips. Startled, she started to move away. He gripped her hips as his lips continued their voyage to her abdomen. He raised his head, and his eyes held her gaze. His fingers stroked her cheek, lightly caressed her breasts, and

then, as though he sensed her need, his fingers touched the area between her legs, now drenched from longing for him. Her body arched when he stroked her most intimate hot spot, creating a hunger deep inside her. His mouth suckled her breast, and her body tingled with an unfamiliar yearning. The aching sensation started where his tongue licked her nipple and ended deep in the core of her body. She moaned as his mouth moved from her breast back down her body, his lips and tongue caressing her abdomen, and then, shockingly, his tongue tasted her down there. “No.” She said the word but wasn’t sure she meant it. His actions had startled her and yet she wanted more. “Yes.” He smiled briefly before continuing his exploration, tasting her and gently scraping his teeth across that most sensitive area. She quit her protest as the pleasure became too great. Hunger for his rapt attention sent her normal reservations spiraling out of control. She reached for him. Damien slid up in one smooth move and lay beside her. Shining gray eyes stared into hers. Hesitantly, she reached out and touched him. Pleasure flashed across his face when she ran her fingers over his throat and chest. She pushed off his jacket and shirt with his help. Wanting to taste him as he’d tasted her, Belle leaned forward and scattered kisses along his neck and across his chest to his nipples. He sucked in a deep lungful of air and groaned. Encouraged, she continued down his body. Glancing at him, she touched his trousers. He unfastened and pushed them off. His large erection frightened and fascinated her. Her fingers lightly caressed the engorged skin of his shaft. He moved her hand, showing how to grip him. He was warm and pulsing, satin skin over firmness. Intrigued, she kissed the tip and heard another moan, this one deeper and more tantalizing than before. She looked up. “You like that?” He gave a halfhearted chuckle. “Oh, yes.”

Belle enjoyed the feeling of power this intimate connection gave her. She bent back to her task and ran her tongue up and down the length of him before putting the tip into her mouth. His body stiffened and she looked again to be sure he liked her actions. Yes, he definitely did. He took hold of her head and showed her how to move up and down his substantial length. She did as he’d shown her and let her tongue move over the smooth top. Suddenly, he stopped her, pulled her body up beside him, and rolled on top. “I can’t wait.” He moved into position, his legs pressing her thighs wide open. Hand on his cock, he guided himself to her center and pushed his length inside slowly. She flinched, and he stopped. He bent his head and suckled on her breast, going from one to the other. She began to move under him and moaned her appreciation. “Do you like this?” “Yes, yes, that feels good.” Gradually, he began to enter her tightness again. His cock slid deeper inside her slick walls. “Relax, love,” he whispered in her ear. He brushed his lips one more time across her nipples. There was a throbbing need inside her to feel all of him. She opened her legs wider and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. “I’m ready.” “This part will hurt briefly, Annabelle. Hold onto me.” Staring directly into her eyes, he pushed his shaft through the barrier of her maidenhead and filled her slick center. She cried out with the sharp pain, and he stilled fully embedded inside her body. He felt huge inside of her. Gradually, her inner walls adjusted to his breach, and she moved against him slightly to test the level of pain. Finding none, she smiled, hoping to encourage him to continue. He brushed damp hair off her forehead, smiled at her in return, and then slowly moved his cock in and out of her slick body. His eyes held hers prisoner. Heat and want and something else built inside her with each stroke of his huge erection. Poised on the edge of

a precipice, Annabelle wanted to dive over, clinging to Damien all the way, yet something held her back. “Let go, Annabelle. Come with me.” He held his beautiful mouth tantalizingly close to hers. “Open for me.” She opened her mouth, and his tongue ravished the softness inside. His sex moved in and out, sending her body arching closer to his, moving harder against him, reaching for something—and then she was swept away. She heard him yell yes, as if from a great distance, before his seed filled her. Her body fairly hummed in satisfaction for several long moments. When she came back to the present he was cradling her in his arms. “That wasn’t supposed to happen,” he said when she opened her eyes again. Belle didn’t reply. Her feelings were muddled, confused by him and his previous actions and now this. This caring, loving interlude, now over, was something he regretted. Without saying anything else, he lifted himself from her sated body and turned away. Embarrassment swept over her, remembering how easily she had lost control. Shame caused her face to flush. If he noticed her discomfiture, he didn’t comment. He turned to gather their clothes, but didn’t look at her when he handed hers over. “We’d better dress before someone comes in.” A horrible thought crossed her mind. “Did you plan this to prove I’m not a lady?” She glanced at the blanket. “You had the blanket ready. Is this part of your plan to prove I’m an imposter?” She blinked furiously to stop tears from flowing down her cheeks. What a fool she’d been to hope he might care for her. “No.” Damien spoke quickly. “Don’t cry. There was no plan. We keep the blankets handy in case we need them for the horses.” He stood to pull on his clothes. “Here, I’ll help you.” He reached out to her as she struggled to dress. “We need to get you home before your father worries.”

“You mean before there are any questions that might make your black heart uneasy.” She pushed his hand away. “I can handle this.” She realized part of her hurt and anger was because of her uneasiness about her position here in England. Her father appeared to accept and love her, but that could change if he was given the wrong information, and she’d just made herself very vulnerable. It seemed to take forever to dress, get their horses, and arrive back at the Norton estate. Belle left her horse and Damien at the front door. She didn’t say good-bye, just rushed inside, telling herself she hoped to never see him again. **** Damn, damn, damn. Damien crisscrossed the drawing room while he waited to see Lord Norton. You handled that well, he berated himself for the hundredth time. He’d lost control. He never lost control. But he had this time. His longing for her had kindled a voracious hunger that sent a tormenting desire surging through every nerve in his body. He wouldn’t ever forget the feel of his cock pulsing inside her tight, wet sheath. Just thinking about her made his cock begin to harden again. He shook his head, trying to clear his salacious thoughts before talking with her father. Of course there was only one correct decision. He’d offer for her. His desire for her had blinded him to the possible results of their actions, such as a child. The thought sent a rush of warmth to his heart. He brushed aside his reaction, not ready to think about what it might mean. She’d been an innocent. It was his responsibility to control himself. He knew Lord Norton wanted them to marry and, as his wife, he’d be protecting Lord Norton and meeting his own needs. His hunger for her had not decreased one iota.

And he had to admit, there was much about her that pleased him. He enjoyed her company this afternoon before their dalliance in the stable. He believed they could be quite happy together, especially if he found out what her true intentions were regarding Lord Norton. “Damien,” Lord Norton greeted him. “Sorry to have kept you waiting. I was meeting with my manager about the farms.” He stopped speaking and looked closer at Damien. “You appear distressed. Is everything all right?” “Yes, sir. Could we talk privately in your study?” “Of course.” Norton led the way down the corridor. “Did Belle go to her room? I got your message.” “She did.” Damien followed him into the room and shut the door. He waited until Norton sat before continuing. “I’ve given much thought to your suggestion that Annabelle and I marry.” He walked closer to the desk and straightened his shoulders. “I believe you’re right. I’d like to formally request your permission to ask her.” A broad grin covered his friend’s face. He motioned to Damien. “Sit.” Reaching out, he poured wine from a nearby decanter into two crystal glasses. He handed one to Damien. “This makes me very happy. When I die—” He held up his hand to stop Damien’s protest. “I know my body and accept the fact. This gives me peace. I know you’ll take good care of her.” “I will, if she’ll have me. I’m not sure she’ll be agreeable.” “Don’t worry. I’ll convince her. Have you spoken to her about this?” “No.” Lord Norton went to the door and instructed a maid to ask his daughter to join them. “I’ll leave you two alone. Afterward, we’ll have a celebratory dinner.” Or not, Damien thought. He feared Annabelle’s reaction might not be what her father thought. He walked to the window and looked out, trying to regain his composure, preparing himself for whatever reaction came.

The creak of the door had him turning. She stood in the doorway. Dressed in a fresh, light pink gown with puffy sleeves and her hair arranged in a neat chignon, she looked cool and collected. “You wanted to speak with me? I thought we’d said all that was needed.” Violet eyes, still slightly red from tears, stared across the room at him. “I’ve spoken to your father. He has given permission for me to talk with you.” He swallowed. “I want to ask you to marry me.” There, the words were out. “No. You are only asking because of what happened. I have no desire to wed you.” “You know there could be a child as the result of our actions today.” “If there is, I’ll deal with it.” Her face flushed red. “You do not have to offer for me out of guilt.” “I don’t have any guilt. We both agreed to what happened. You must see this is best for you and will relieve your father’s concern about your future welfare.” “He doesn’t need to be worried. But, you believe married to me you can control me and make sure I don’t hurt Father. You still don’t believe I’m his real daughter.” She took two steps further into the room and held her chin up and shoulders straight. “I can’t marry a man who doubts me.” “I’m sorry I can’t convince you to accept my offer. Please explain to Lord Norton that I couldn’t stay for dinner. I must pack. I’ll be leaving for London tomorrow.” He brushed by her, and it took all his determination not to stop and take her into his arms. Taking long strides, he left the room without a backward glance and closed the door with a snap. The ache in his chest surprised him. He wasn’t easily hurt. In fact, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt such an emotion. Always cool and calm, his father warned him that someday, someone would pierce his stalwart armor. He’d grieved for his parents when they

died, but this was a different type of ache and he didn’t like it. Not at all. The thought frightened him that he might be vulnerable to Annabelle, a woman who still might be an imposter.

Chapter Five Belle sank down on the nearest chair as tears filled her eyes. If he’d asked her earlier today, her answer might have been different. She’d been so caught up in her need for him and other confusing emotions. Damien would protect her. Still, marriage was not what she wanted. At this point in time she didn’t trust men. She’d prefer to hide away on one of her father’s small estates. But, if she gave that reason her father would insist he’d never let her live alone. He wouldn’t believe she had the ability to protect herself. Well, maybe she didn’t, but she knew enough to try. She knew how to shoot, and if Felipe came around she’d not hesitate. No matter where she went or what she did, the men in her life had one answer, marriage. For now she’d use an excuse they might believe. That would give her more time to work on her plan. Because of the circumstances, Damien wanted to do what was expected. There had been no mention of caring, just of doing the proper thing. Nevertheless, she had a plan and it was best to stick to it. She’d convince her father that she and Teresa could live happily on his small estate near the shore. She tried to ignore thoughts of Felipe and how he might try to force her to marry him. One problem at a time was enough to handle. Belle raised her head at the knock on the door. “May I come in?” Her father peeked inside with a big smile on his face, which promptly turned into a frown. “Where is Damien?” “He left right after I refused his offer of marriage.” “What?” Lord Norton’s face went bright red. “You refused him? He’s the best of the bunch. The one man who wouldn’t be marrying

you for what you’ll inherit from me, and he’d definitely never harm you in any way. How could you do such a thing?” His angry tone surprised her. “He doesn’t really want to marry me, Father. He wants to please you. Anyway, he didn’t seem too upset. He said to tell you he is headed for London tomorrow.” Lord Norton paced in front of Belle’s chair. Finally, he sat next to her and took her hands. “My heart won’t last much longer. I want to see you safe. Without a protector, my nephew, who will inherit my estate and part of my fortune, will manage to convince the courts that you are an imposter. You’ll be left with nothing. I didn’t want to worry you, but you have no choice, my dear. You must marry.” “Couldn’t you give me your small estate near the sea? The one you told me about where you and Mama were so happy. Teresa and I can live there quietly.” “I'm sorry, but it wouldn’t work. You’re young, beautiful, and vulnerable. I’d constantly be worrying about whether you were safe or not. As your father, I must make this decision for you.” She’d come back around full circle. Pulling her hands away, she stared down into her lap. There appeared to be no recourse but marriage. If her two choices were Felipe or Damien, she knew who she’d choose. Her fingers pleated the material of her skirt. How to say the words that would take away any hope of true freedom? Lord Norton’s hand covered hers. She looked up at him. “He’ll make you happy. In this you must trust my judgment. I’ve seen the looks he gives you when he thinks no one notices. I noticed. I’ve known him since he was a baby. He was always a quiet young man, too serious for his age. He’s certainly not one to show his emotions. But I’m sure he cares for you.” Her father smiled and squeezed her hand. “Of course, being a typical male, he might not have mentioned that fact.”

Swallowing around the lump in her throat, Belle nodded and finally managed to speak. “I’ll do as you ask, Father. I hope your conclusions are right. I know I don’t want to be responsible for giving you anything else to worry about. Please take care of yourself. I’ve just found you. I don’t want to lose you.” “Seeing you safe and happily married will take a weight off these old shoulders. I’ll send a message right away before Damien leaves and tell him you’ve reconsidered.” Belle kissed his cheek and excused herself. Everything had happened in such a hurry, fear and excitement gripped her as she trudged up the stairs. She’d made an irrevocable decision and she’d have to live with it. When Damien had turned and faced her in the study and sunlight glistened in his dark hair, the strong planes of his face in clear view and those steel gray eyes seeming to penetrate right into her thoughts, a feeling of warmth, protectiveness, perhaps love had swept over her. But, even if she did love him, could he ever love her? The woman he believed to be a fraud, a charlatan. His words had sounded cold and as though he were accepting the inevitable. She glanced outside her bedroom window and saw Teresa strolling off toward the walk that led around the lake. Her father planned to send Damien a message. She preferred to talk with him herself. Perhaps she could ride to his estate without anyone knowing. The back stairs took her to a side door. She slipped out and hurried to the stables. The young boy working in the stalls didn’t ask any questions when she requested her horse be saddled. She’d managed to hide from her guards. The thought of Felipe made her hesitate. Reluctantly, she decided to ask one of them to escort her. After the stable boy had finished saddling her horse, she sent him to find one of her chaperones. “My lady, how might I assist you?” the tall, burly man asked. “I wish to ride to Lord Royston’s estate. I’ll need you to accompany me.” The man nodded and went to get his horse. She’d

have preferred to go on her own, but it was foolishly dangerous and she didn’t want to cause more worry for her father. The minutes seemed to drag on. Finally, they were on their way. Belle had no idea what she’d say when she saw Damien. Perhaps he’d refuse to speak with her and ignore her father’s message. He’d appeared angry when he left. She urged her mare into a gallop. It was better to get it over with instead of meandering along worrying about his reaction. No one was in sight as they rode up. Belle sent her guard to the stables with the horses and she climbed the stairs to knock on the door. Damien’s butler briefly showed surprise at seeing her. “Please come in, my lady. I’ll notify Lord Royston you are here.” He bowed and walked off down the left corridor. Belle clasped her trembling hands. Restless, she walked around the large foyer to study the various pictures placed at intervals on either side. To the right of the foyer a curved staircase rose to the next floor. Sunlight beamed across the shiny wood floor from windows on the second landing. “My lady,” the butler spoke from behind her. She turned, her heart racing and her legs weak, but Damien was not in sight. “Lord Royston hopes you will understand that he does not have time for a social call. He is busy preparing to leave for London. He hopes you will excuse him and perhaps the two of you might visit at a later date.” The butler’s face showed no emotion, although Belle thought she noted a slight flush on his cheeks. “I see. Where might Lord Royston be located down that corridor you just traversed?” “He is in the library,” the butler said. “Thank you.” Belle strode determinedly in the direction the butler had taken. “But, my lady, you mustn’t…”

Belle ignored him. Anger fueled her determination to meet with Damien. How dare he rudely refuse to see her? At the third door, she saw a room lined with books. She stepped into the doorway. Damien sat in a chair facing the windows. He started to speak as he turned his head. “Charles, I thought I told you…” He stopped speaking and stared across the room at Belle. “You told him to send me away. I refused to go.” Slowly, he stood to face her. “I see.” His cold gray eyes stared a hole through her. Taking a deep breath, she walked further into the library. “After riding all this distance, a mere butler had no chance of stopping me at the front door.” “It was my understanding we’d said all there was to say at Lord Norton’s house.” “Even now you won’t call him my father. How can you want to marry me if you still don’t believe in me?” “As you stated earlier, I assuaged my guilt and offered for you. There is nothing more to be said.” His face had hardened into a stern mask. Belle swallowed around the lump in her throat. She had to convince him to marry her or her father would. She’d rather it be her. To be honest, she wanted to marry the man who’d made love to her in his barn, the man who protected her that day in London, the one who danced the waltz with her at the ball. This man facing her both frightened and challenged her. If she backed down now and her father’s message convinced him to wed her, she’d never know if he truly cared for her. And, he’d always be the one in control. They’d probably never be really happy together. For some ridiculous reason, she believed they could be. She had very limited experience with men and the ways to make them agree with her. Going by instinct alone, she strolled closer. Now or never, it was time to assert her feelings.

“You might as well leave now. I’m not interested in anything you have to say.” “Perhaps you’d like more of what I’m going to do.” She modulated her voice into a purr. Close enough now, she reached out with her hand and touched his cheek. He didn’t move. Her fingers slid across his eyebrows, along his aquiline nose, and over his sensuous lips. A spark of light flashed briefly in those hooded eyes. Determined not to let his impassive manner discourage her, she moved her hand down along his strong neck, where she felt his pulse beating rapidly. She let a smile curve her lips. “Your heartbeat tells me you are not able to resist me completely.” She put her lips over the spot where his pulse throbbed. She licked the spot, then moved her body fully against him. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she scattered kisses over his face, ending at his mouth. He kept his lips tight as she kissed him. Using her tongue, she teased his firm lips as her fingers traced the outside of his ear. She brushed her breasts back and forth across his chest. She was afraid she’d never crack his shell and almost gave up. He finally groaned, yanked her closer, and devoured her mouth. “Damn you,” he muttered under his breath as his lips moved to the area between her neck and shoulder. Tremors shook her with a hunger so deep it shocked her to her core. He swept her into his arms. “I’ll be damned if I’ll make love to you on this hard floor.” He carried her out, along the corridor, and up the winding staircase. “The servants,” Belle protested. “You should have thought of them before you seduced me.” He never slowed. When he reached the last room on the second floor, he managed to open the door and go through. A startled maid straightened from making his bed. “Leave, now!” She scurried out of the room, and Damien dropped Belle onto the bed. “Damien, what will they think?”

“That I’m going to ravish you and they’d be right, my love.” Belle watched as he threw off his clothes, discarding each piece on the floor with careless abandon. Once he was completely naked, he turned to where she waited on the bed. Her gaze swept down from his muscular chest to his fine, flat stomach all the way to his cock, fully erect and ready to pleasure her. He was beautiful. “You are definitely overdressed, my love. Let me help you get ready for our afternoon.” The muscles of his long, lean body rippled as he stalked across the room. His manner had gone from angry to seductive. “Now it’s my turn to undress you.” His warm fingers stroked across her skin lightly as he unbuttoned her gown. When he uncovered her breasts he stopped for a moment to cup them in his hands and skim his lips across her nipples. “Lovely,” he murmured. “But let’s get the rest of these clothes out of the way before I feast on you.” Belle lay back and watched as he undressed her, almost as though he unwrapped a package. He stood straight and let his gaze roam over her after he’d removed everything but her stockings and shoes. A sensation of heat followed behind his inspection. When he’d finished, he took off her shoes and then reached up to unroll one stocking. His lips tasted each spot of her skin as it was revealed. At her foot, he kissed each toe and her instep. Then, he moved his attention to her other leg. She shook with the intensity of her desire. After giving equal devotion there, he raised his head. A wicked smile crossed his face. “How daring of you to put yourself at my mercy.” He moved one leg over her and straddled her body. “Where to start?” Her heart pounded almost out of her chest as his icy gray eyes narrowed. His sex stood erect. The engorged length, high against his abdomen, stopped her breath. Cautiously, she reached out and circled his penis with her hand. He took a deep breath. “I know you like it when I touch you here.”

“Oh, yes.” He waited, as though to see what she’d do next. She moved her hand up and down the length of him, watching his expressions. He fought to not show any response, but she saw his eyes begin to warm and the tightening of his jaw. Impulsively, she raised up and pushed him down on the bed. “It’s my turn,” she said. “I started this, and I intend to finish it.” Her other hand brushed over the fine hairs that lay around his erection and gently cupped his sac. She flushed when she saw him studying her intently. She bent and moved her cheek against his hard shaft. Her hair fell around her, hiding her face from his perusal. Her mouth caressed the length of his cock, and her lips licked the drop of salty liquid at the tip, bringing a strangled moan from him. She opened her mouth and took him in as far as she could. His breath rushed out. Reaching down, he grasped her hair in his hands as she began to move the way he’d shown her before. Her body tightened with need as she tasted him. “Come here,” he said and gently pulled her up beside him. “You didn’t let me finish.” “No. I want to come inside of you. To feel my cock buried in your warm body.” His hands touched her face, then along her neck to her shoulders. “You create an insatiable hunger in me. Your lush curves and sweet scent inflame my every nerve.” One of his hands covered her left breast while his mouth suckled on the right. She held his head tight against her, glorying in the salacious feelings he aroused. Slowly he kissed his way over her flat stomach to the delicate hairs that surrounded her clitoris. He licked her secret spot, making her back arch against the sheets. His tongue continued to stroke across her sensitive clit. His fingers rubbed across her nipple. Greedy for more, she lifted her hips toward his mouth. Her body ached and burned to be closer and closer to him. As he tasted her clit, his finger slipped into the wet, velvety softness of her body. “Please, please, mi amor.”

He raised his head and looked at her. “What do you want, Annabelle.” She swallowed around the dryness in her throat. “I want you, mi amor, inside of me.” “Your wish is my command.” He removed his finger and placed the head of his cock at the slick opening between her lower lips. She spread her legs wider, and he cupped her round buttocks in his hands as he drove his cock deeply into her trembling, aroused body. Shivers of pleasure spread out from her core. **** Her tight, hot vagina clung tightly to his greedy cock, sending a voracious desire spiraling along every nerve in his body. Annabelle’s body arched and moved with him, demanding as much as she gave. Her violet eyes had darkened to almost purple, and her breathing was rapid and ragged. He moved her legs up to rest against his shoulders and plunged his cock in deeper still. He moved harder and faster with each stroke. A craving built inside of him until he felt sure he’d explode. Struggling for breath, he looked into her eyes. “You are mine, Annabelle, mine from this moment on. Do you understand?” Her beautiful eyes focused on his face. “Yes, Damien, only yours.” Hearing those words swept away the last iota of his control. Damien pushed his cock deeply into her velvety passage as he took them spinning into space. He held her close as his breathing slowed. This quiet moment gave him a chance to enjoy contemplating her delicate features. Long black eyelashes curved against cream-colored, smooth cheeks. Her lilac scent filled the air, and she’d tasted like the sweetness of honey and spice. Gentle breaths escaped through her rosy lips. Her flushed, curvaceous body clung to him. He no longer cared about her past,

only her future. She’d marry him and soon. Whatever happened afterward, he’d handle. Her openness and giving had crushed the wall his heart had hidden behind. It both thrilled and frightened him. He'd never allowed himself to be vulnerable before. Her small, delicate hand held his heart. His hopes and dreams were now intertwined with hers. Violet eyes opened slowly to gaze into his face. Her mouth curved into a smile, and sensual warmth flooded through him. “Don’t look at me like that or we’ll never get out of this bed and get you home.” Her lithe body stretched. “I suppose we have shocked all your staff.” She glanced toward the windows. “From the light, it must be late afternoon.” He pulled her against his body. “Hmm, yes. Did you tell your father where you were going?” “No, but I did bring one of the guards with me.” “Then we’d better dress and go directly to see Lord Norton. I don’t want him to worry.” “You’re right.” She looked into his eyes. “I really don’t want anything to hurt him.” His lips slid across her yielding mouth. “I believe you. Get up and I’ll be your lady’s maid. Then we’ll go together to tell him we plan to marry, soon. Any problem with that?” he asked and found himself holding his breath. “None at all.” Giving him a quick, flirtatious smile, she pulled out of his arms and got out of bed to get her clothes. She glanced over her shoulder. “How much experience do you have being a lady’s maid?” He walked up to her and brushed her hair aside to nibble at her neck. “Enough for you not to worry. I know what I’m doing.” “That’s what I thought, my dangerous devil.” After fastening the last button, he picked up his brush and worked on her hair. “There, that’s the best I can do. Put on that ridiculous fluffy hat, and we’ll go get the horses and your guard.”

Annabelle glanced around the empty rooms as they came downstairs. “I think your servants are being especially gracious by disappearing,” she said as they went out the front door. “You are going to be their mistress. They’ll never say a word.” “At least not in front of you,” she said. “They have been with my family a long time. They’ll like you and respect you.” Tree branches waved in the breeze, and fallen leaves blew across their path as they walked to the barn. The scent of summer was in the air. The guard came to the door. “Are you ready to leave, my lady?” “You may go on ahead. I’ll bring Lady Annabelle home.” He nodded and went to get his horse. They waited until he was out of sight before Damien had his stallion and her mare saddled. The sun set in the west as they rode to the Norton estate. **** Her father greeted them at the door. “There you are. Young Dan, the stable boy, thought you and your guard had gone for ride. As it got later, I began to get concerned.” “Sorry, Papa. You planned to send Damien a message. I preferred to see him first, but I should have left you a note.” “I came with her, sir, so we can have that celebratory dinner tonight.” “Wonderful, and it’s much better that you two found a way to settle the issue, rather than me interfering. I do believe you’ll be very happy.” His face glowed as he shook hands with Damien. Dinner was a happy affair, but Belle was tired and ready to go upstairs when Damien left. Teresa followed her into the bedroom. “You are sure this is what you want?” “Father’s determined I wed and he’s right. In this world we live in, women have little control. We need a man we trust to handle our

affairs for us. As Father said, his heir would find a way to claim I’m an imposter, and I’d lose my inheritance. Then I would be at Felipe’s mercy. Not that I want anything to happen to Father. The longer he lives the happier I’ll be.” “And you believe you can trust Lord Royston?” Teresa persisted. Belle took Teresa’s hand and urged her to sit. A pot of hot tea had been brought to Belle’s room at her request. She poured tea for Teresa and herself. “I love him, Teresa. There’s been an attraction between us from the start. He cares for me. This is the best solution, and once I’m married, Felipe will have no further reason to search for me. But what will you do? Do you want to return to Spain?” Teresa sipped her tea and stared across the room. She put down the cup and faced Belle. “I’d prefer to stay in England. I have nothing to go back for at this time. My parents and husband are gone. Although I’m not sure what I can do here. Where I might live.” “If you don’t mind, I’d like you to stay with Father. He’s not well and while he has plenty of staff, I’d like to know you’re keeping an eye on him.” She held up her hand when she saw Teresa start to speak. “Wait. Listen to my plan first before rejecting it. Father likes you. He’d enjoy the company. Later, if you decide you want to do something different, I’ll help you.” Teresa frowned. “I don’t want to be a burden on anyone.” “My dear friend, you’d never be a burden and you’d really be giving me peace of mind. Will you do it?” “For now. But I won’t stay forever.” “Absolutely not. Thank you.” Teresa finished her tea and left shortly after their talk. Belle’s maid helped her undress, and Belle lay on her bed. She was tired but wakeful. The changes in her life were happening rapidly. Thinking of this afternoon brought a flush to her face. Actually, she’d enjoyed being the pursuer. Damien had released a side of her she’d never known she had, and she looked forward to their wedding

day. Hopefully, Felipe would soon hear of her marriage and return to Spain. A cold shiver brushed across her shoulders. She trembled. Darkness filled Felipe, and she feared a simple wedding might not deter him at all.

Chapter Six They’d decided on a quiet wedding at the village church and today was the day. Belle stood at the window and watched as a light rain left the ground muddy. Moisture hung on the tree leaves. Did a cloudy day foretell a good future or not? Since the day they agreed to be wed, she and Damien had found no time to be alone. As the days went by, her anxiety increased. She feared Damien might still be marrying her to please her father. There was an attraction and desire between them, but did they have enough to develop a loving, lasting relationship? Only time would tell. There been no further sightings of Felipe, and that added to Belle’s concerns. She didn’t believe he’d just given up and returned to Spain. She’d been well protected since leaving London, but she sensed him near. She told her father and Damien about her feelings. They reassured her, telling her not to worry. “How beautiful you look. It’s time to leave for the church,” Teresa said, standing in the doorway to Belle’s room. “I’m ready.” Belle forced a smile and followed her friend down the stairs. She stood for a second under the portico while they waited for her father. “The carriage has been sent for, Lady Annabelle,” the guard said. “Your father said he wouldn’t be long.” A cloud of dust caught their attention. “Who could that be?” Belle asked. The curricle moved quickly down the lane, stopping abruptly in front. The man jumped out, raised a rifle, and shot the guard before he could react. “Felipe!” Belle thought for a second she was seeing a mirage.

He sneered and took the steps two at a time until he stood in front of her. “You didn’t really believe you’d escape me? I’ve just been waiting for the right opportunity.” His harsh laugh chilled her. His hand clasped her arm tight as he pulled her along back to his curricle. “Don’t move,” he shouted to Teresa. “Or you’ll die.” Belle twisted her arm trying to free herself, but his fingers dug into her flesh. He tossed his gun up on the seat and slung Belle over his shoulder as he climbed into the curricle, then threw her into the seat beside him. Taking the reins, he sent the carriage rushing down the drive. Belle clung to the side of her seat for fear of falling out. She glanced at Felipe. He looked wild, mad. Her heart raced. She’d been so close to her wedding. Felipe had spoiled it all. She knew from the direction he took that they were headed to the coast. Once he had her on board a ship, all hope was lost. He’d have to kill her, because she had no intention of letting him gain control of her. **** Damien waited at the church, impatient for his bride’s arrival. Shouldn’t she have been here by now? Restless, he walked outside and stared in the direction of Lord Norton’s estate. Two men standing behind him were talking. He caught the word Spaniard. Whirling around, he strode across the uneven ground. “What did you say?” he asked. Seeing their puzzled faces, he added, “About the Spaniard?” “I told my friend there was a stranger in town this morning. Some foreigner, Spanish, I think. He spoke heavily accented English.” “I need a fast horse,” Damien said. He glanced around the churchyard. “Take my stallion, the gray one on this end.” The man pointed to his horse. “He’s the fastest in the county.” He puffed out his chest.

Without hesitation Damien strode across, swung himself into the saddle, and galloped away as fear crept over him. The stallion was fast. He soon turned onto the curved drive to Lord Norton’s estate. Teresa and Lord Norton ran down the front steps when they saw him. “I’m glad you’ve come. We were just going to send word. A man grabbed Belle and rode off with her. Teresa said his name is Felipe,” Lord Norton said. “I was afraid of that. Which way did they go?” Teresa pointed in the direction the carriage had taken. “He’s sure to be heading to the coast,” she said. “I’ll be back.” He rode off before they could say another word. He’d find her and when he did he’d make sure this Felipe never bothered Belle again. He watched for any signs of their direction. He didn’t want to make a mistake. A piece of white fabric hanging on a bush caught his eye. He stopped and pulled the material free of the thorns. Belle’s scent rose from the handkerchief. Teresa had been right. This was the direction to the nearest port, and he just happened to know a shortcut. Thankfully, he’d grown up in this area. He knew all the back roads. Felipe would be surprised to see someone waiting to greet him. Moving off the well-traveled road, Damien urged his horse onward. He’d have Belle home by this time tomorrow. **** Once they’d traveled a good distance, Felipe slowed the carriage. “Mustn’t wear our horses down.” He turned his head and glared at her. “You didn’t really think you’d get away from me, did you?” He spoke harshly. “You’re mine and as soon as we arrive in Spain, estaremos casados.” “We’ll never be married. I’ll tell Papa how you’ve hurt me. He’ll protect me.”

“Why didn’t you tell him before?” Felipe sneered. “Didn’t you wonder why he insisted that you marry me?” “Papa loves me. Are you threatening him with something?” “He loves you so much, he didn’t want you to know about your real parent. He was afraid you’d find out how long he’d known the truth of your father’s survival. He chose to keep you unaware. I knew the story. He made the mistake of taking me into his confidence. Then later, he was afraid I’d tell you and that you’d hate him. At least I convinced him you would.” “I found out and told Papa. He knows I don’t hate him. You’re an evil man.” “True, but in my part of Spain, I’m an important businessman, a good man. And you found out too late. Everyone already knew your father intended to approve of our marriage.” His wild laugh and the look in his eyes made Belle shiver. The man was insane. She wondered what was happening at the church. Did Damien know Felipe had her, and if he did would he find the handkerchief and hair ribbon she’d managed to drop while Felipe drove wildly toward the port? She wished she had her pistol with her, but she’d never expected to need it on her wedding day. For days, she’d sensed him near and thought he might try something. When her wedding day arrived she was relieved, believing she’d be safe. She’d been wrong, but she had no intention of giving up. He’d get careless. She’d watch for the opportunity to free herself. **** By late afternoon, Damien smelled the salt air. Cautiously, he rode into town. He’d check which ships were leaving tonight for Spain and then he’d find a place to hide and wait. Several ships were moored at the dock. The third one had a cabin reserved for Felipe Aznar and his wife. The man had been over confident. Good, he’d made Damien’s job easy.

Damien found a place to leave his horse and then settled down between containers waiting to be put on board a ship. No one was around, so he made himself comfortable and waited. It was almost dark when Damien saw a carriage turn the corner and head toward the ship. He didn’t move. Two people sat in front, one a woman. When they got closer he saw it was Belle. Relief rushed through him. Now, to free her. The man pulled up the team and turned to Belle. Taking a rope, he started to wrap it around her middle. “Stop that.” Belle hit him and pushed his hands away. He slapped her. “I’m not going to leave you here unless you’re tied to the carriage. Otherwise, I know you’d jump off and disappear. Stop fighting me or I’ll really hurt you.” “I don’t think so.” Damien pushed his pistol into the man’s back. “Move away and get down. I’d love to shoot you, so give me a reason.” “Damien,” Belle gasped his name. Felipe backed up slowly. “I’ll pay you to say you never saw us. I heard the rumors. Some say you are marrying her to please her father. I can take her off your hands.” “Keep saying things like that and I will kill you.” Felipe whirled and threw himself onto Damien. They hit the ground hard. Damien’s head hit the edge of a box, and the impact stunned him. His gun fell several feet from them. **** Felipe lunged for it. Belle had jumped off the opposite side. She threw herself in Felipe’s path, blocking him from getting the gun. “You brazen hussy. I’ll show you what happens to women who don’t obey me.” His hands wrapped around her throat and tightened. “Normally I’d let you breathe now and then choke you again and again, until you obeyed my every whim.” He breathed his words into

her face. His dark eyes blazed with madness. “If I can’t have you, he won’t either.” Her vision began to blur. She struggled, trying to pry his fingers from her neck. Gasping for air, she knew he was going to kill her in his rage. Just as the light flickered, she thought she heard a gunshot. His hands were gone and Belle gasped, trying to bring air into her lungs. Her throat ached. “Belle.” Damien pulled her into his arms. “My love, please breathe.” Belle tried to speak, but the words came out raspy and unrecognizable. She relaxed in Damien’s strong arms and worked on taking in slow, deep breaths. Damien sat on the ground and pulled her across him in his arms. A crowd had formed around them. “We’ve got this one, governor. The constable will be here right soon,” one of the burly men yelled to them. “Felipe?” Belle barely got the words out. “He’s wounded. He’ll live to regret this day. Are you better now?” She nodded and sat up. Looking around she spotted Felipe a few feet away. Blood poured down his right shoulder. Hate still filled his eyes when he glared across the short distance to her. “Don’t worry,” Damien said. “He’ll be deported with an armed escort to Spain. We’ll let the Spanish police decide his fate.” She nodded and tried not to think about her real feelings. She feared she might never feel completely safe with Felipe alive. It seemed forever before they took him away. Damien helped her into a rented carriage. “I’ve boarded the horse. Let’s go home. We have a wedding waiting for us.” Belle nodded and curled up against him as the driver pulled away from the dockside. After they’d ridden for a few hours, Damien leaned forward to tap on the roof and stop the carriage. “What are you doing?” Belle asked.

“I want to give the driver directions. We’ll stop for the night,” Damien said. His hand brushed her hair off her neck. He frowned at the bruises left by Felipe. “I should have killed him.” “No. You aren’t the type of man to deliberately take a life, and I’m glad. Really, I’m fine. But we don’t know what is happening to Father. If we keep going, we’ll be home in a few more hours.” Reluctantly, he agreed. “Then try to sleep. Our wedding is going to be rescheduled as soon as possible after we get back.” It seemed to take longer going home. She snuggled against Damien and dozed on and off. Finally, they turned into the long drive to her father’s house. “Someone must have told your father and Teresa that a carriage was coming,” Damien said. “They’re both running down the steps.” As soon as the coach stopped, Belle jumped out and threw herself into Lord Norton’s arms. “Father, you’re all right. I was so worried.” “Not half as much as I was frightened for you. But I believed in Damien. I knew he’d bring you home.” He held her back and looked over her. He spotted the bruises. “What are these?” he asked as he reached out and touched her throat. “Felipe tried to hurt me. Damien shot him, and now he’s been arrested.” Belle turned toward Teresa, and Teresa quickly ran to her. They hugged, and both had tears in their eyes. “I was so frightened, mi querida amiga.” “Me too,” Belle said. “Can we go inside?” “Certainly. Why don’t you go upstairs with Teresa and rest? Damien and I will visit,” her father said. He leaned over and kissed Belle on the cheek. “I was so frightened I’d lost you again, my dear daughter.” ****

Damien and Lord Norton stood and watched as the two women walked up the stairs. “Come into my office, Damien, and have a drink,” Lord Norton said. “Belle will be fine. Madame Diaz will take care of her.” He lay his hand across the left side of his jacket. As soon as they entered the room, he sank into the nearest chair. “Pour if you will. I’m a bit weak after all this excitement.” He took the glass Damien handed him. “Are you all right, Lord Norton? Perhaps the doctor should check you?” “I’m fine. Just need to catch my breath. Nothing the doctor can do.” He took a long sip of the whiskey. “You know we’ll need to postpone the wedding.” “For only one day,” Damien answered. “We’ll have the ceremony tomorrow. I’m not waiting any longer for Annabelle to become my wife.” Lord Norton smiled. “I like to hear the impatience in your voice, showing you do love my daughter. Just in case you have any other concerns, I have a secret to tell you.” He leaned close. “My daughter has a very small heart-shaped birthmark on her body. When you see it all your suspicions will go away for good.” Damien’s heart fell. He’d seen her body, or most of it, and there hadn’t been any birthmark. This was the proof he’d been looking for, and now, right before his wedding, when he’d begun to believe her, his first suspicions were proven right. His beloved fiancée, the imposter. Her father smiled at Damien. Lord Norton had never doubted Annabelle’s identity. If Damien exposed her, everyone would be hurt, including himself. What to do? The thought of sending her away made his chest hurt. Damien admitted to himself that he loved her. Imposter or not, she must have had good reasons to make the decisions she did. She obviously cared for Lord Norton. Why bring hurt and despair to them

all? No. He would go along with Lord Norton, because regardless, he fully intended to make Annabelle his wife. Damien clapped Lord Norton on the shoulder. “She may be your daughter, but by this time tomorrow, she’ll be my wife.” They finished their drink, and then Damien insisted Lord Norton go upstairs and rest. He had to see a man about the horse he’d borrowed and rearrange a wedding. Nothing was going to stop tomorrow’s event. **** Sunshine had shone on them for their wedding day. Damien’s eyes had warmed Annabelle as she walked down the aisle in her cream-colored gown, carrying a bouquet of red and yellow roses. Nearby neighbors and close friends, of her father’s and Damien’s, had come to the house after the ceremony to join them for a wedding breakfast. At the end of the meal, Damien leaned close and whispered in Annabelle’s ear, “Can we leave now?” She found herself as anxious as he to take the carriage and ride the short distance to his home. “We’ve spoken with everyone. I believe they’ll forgive us if we do.” “Good, because I’ve already called for our carriage.” As soon as Damien spotted their coach out front, he hurried Annabelle out amongst laughter and teasing. “Bye, Father. We’ll see you soon.” Belle waved over Damien’s shoulder. The ride was thankfully quick. Damien carried her over the threshold and took the stairs two at a time to his room. “Damien, what will the staff think?” Belle pretended to protest. “They’ll know I can’t wait to have my wife alone. And I gave everyone the afternoon off. Actually there’s no one downstairs to wonder.”

Belle laughed as he deposited her on his large bed. She bounced on the soft mattress. “Very comfortable.” Damien pulled her into a sitting position and started to undo her dress. “This time I want to explore every part of you. Kiss all your soft skin and taste the sweetness of you.” With his help, she quickly undressed and lay across the bed naked. His hot gaze left a trail of heat wherever his eyes roamed. Quickly throwing his clothes aside, he joined her. “You’re very impatient, my lord.” “It has been an eternity since I last held you naked.” His hand brushed across her black hair where it lay loose around her, and his lips trailed from the side of her face to her mouth. She lifted her hands and cupped his face as his tongue tasted her lips. As he continued to explore, his lips teased and tasted the side of her neck. He took time licking the spot where her pulse pounded. He scattered kisses over the bruises. Shivers shook her body. Need and cravings clawed at her insides. Her hunger for him had grown immensely these past few weeks and like someone starving, she reveled in every stroke, every touch. She stopped his progression though and pushed him back on the bed, then proceeded to kiss him, his nipples, along his firm belly, and down to his erection. She’d found a book in her father’s study with graphic pictures and wonderful suggestions. Now, she took him into her mouth. She cupped his balls, as the book had called them, stroking gently while she ran her tongue over the head of his member. His groan and the tightening of muscles told her she was pleasing him. Moving her mouth up and down, she continued to taste his salty flavor and relished in his reactions. Hard hands gripped her and pulled her up along his body. “My turn, my delicious, wanton wife.” This time his lips and teeth tasted, tantalized, and delighted her. When he moved between her legs, she moaned and twisted in pleasure. When she was certain she couldn’t stand a moment more

without him in her, he moved upward and his cock plunged in hard and fast, taking them both burning with exhilaration over the top. Belle cuddled against him, her back to his front, as he moved her hair aside and nuzzled her neck. Damien scattered kisses across her shoulders and along her spine. Belle felt the heat building and the dampness between her legs. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her buttocks up against him. She glanced back. “Relax, love. Trust me, you’ll like this.” **** He ran his hand along her dainty derriere and started to touch her core when a small brown spot caught his eye, just at the crease between her buttocks and thigh. He leaned closer. A small heartshaped birthmark snuggled in that area. Easily overlooked, he thought, as the realization of how he’d wronged his wife hit him. She must have sensed his hesitation. She turned her head and saw his expression. She turned completely around. Her gentle hands cradled his face. “What is it?” Taking a deep breath, he told her of the conversation between her father and him yesterday. “Forgive me for doubting you. Your father always said I was too cynical and untrusting even before you arrived.” “You married me anyway. Why? To protect my father?” He saw the sadness in her eyes and his finger brushed the tear starting to fall on her cheek. “No, my love. I married you because I love you, whether you had been an imposter or not. I simply had to have you. Are you angry with me for all my doubts?” Joy came across her face. “I’ve loved you from the start. I didn’t realize it at first. I fought the feelings. I knew the day we first made love that I cared for you more than I wanted to admit. Then, I thought your offer of marriage was made out of guilt and the possibility we might have a child. My hurt and anger fueled my decision to say no.”

Damien laughed. “That’s what I told myself, arrogant bastard that I was.” She put her fingers across his lips. “No one is allowed to call my husband such names, not even you.” He tumbled her flat and began to kiss every spot on her body. If it took forever he’d make up for his earlier treatment. Her sweet hands raked through his hair, and they both forgot about anything but love. **** “I want to go and hear what your man has to say,” Annabelle said. She stood dressed for the outing in a violet gown that matched her eyes. “You haven’t been feeling well lately. I’ll report everything to you as soon as I return home. I’ve arranged this meeting because I knew your father would want to hear his report.” He walked over and wrapped his arms around her. “I don’t care about it. I love you and know without a doubt who you really are.” She stamped her foot. “Don’t try to sweeten me up so I’ll agree to stay home. I feel good today. You can’t talk me out of going with you.” “All right, my love. And don’t smirk. It’s hard on my ego to give in this easily, but I can’t seem to say no to you and stick to it.” Damien escorted her to the carriage and lifted her in. “Thank goodness we don’t have far to go.” “The fresh air will do me good,” she said and gave him a saucy smile. Teresa greeted them at the door. She’d stayed with Lord Norton as she’d promised Belle, and the situation was working for both of them. Belle appreciated the opportunity to have privacy with her new husband and not have to worry about her father being neglected. “Your father and the gentleman are in his study. He said to join him,” Teresa said.

Damien wrapped Belle’s arm around his and patted her hand. “Don’t be nervous, love.” “I’m not,” Belle lied. She was uncertain what to expect. She’d told most of the truth except she’d never explained to her father about her Spanish father trying to force her to wed Felipe. Lord Norton looked up expectantly when they walked in and then introduced Belle to the man Damien had sent to Spain. “Tell us what you’ve found,” her father said after everyone was seated. The short, stocky messenger smiled at Belle. “This young lady is definitely your daughter. I talked with the man who saved her from drowning. He and his wife loved her as their own child. He was glad to be able to keep her after he heard that you’d died. Later, when he discovered you’d survived, he and his wife just couldn’t give her up.” “Well, I did realize I should have checked on other family from the start.” A tall, lean, dark-haired man stepped into the room. “Papa!” Belle flew across to the door and into the man’s arms. “How? When did you get here?” Surprise and joy filled her, but she glanced at Lord Norton to see his reaction. The smile on Lord Norton’s face reassured her. Her papa chuckled. “I decided to come and face you and Lord Norton.” He held her back and looked her over. “You look well. I hope from your greeting that it means you don’t hate me.” “Never, Papa. Have you met Lord Norton?” “Yes. We met yesterday. We thought it best to talk with your husband before I appeared on your doorstep. But, since you are here, I couldn’t wait any longer.” Damien joined Belle. “I’m Belle’s husband.” He put out his hand. “Francisco Salazar.” Her papa bent his head and took Damien’s hand. “I’m pleased to meet you, Lord Royston.” “Come in and have a seat, Salazar.” Lord Norton motioned to a nearby chair. “I for one am glad you came with Damien’s man. Seeing our daughter happy is my main concern. I’m sure it is yours too.”

“I’ve made many mistakes.” Belle’s papa shook his head and looked across at her. “How can you forgive me for insisting you marry Felipe?” He put up his hand when Belle started to speak. “I thought he’d make you a fine, responsible husband and I must admit I liked the idea of the company having a strong businessman at the head when I’m gone. I never dreamed he would act as he has since you left.” Belle got out of her chair and went to kneel in front of the man who had been such a good father to her up until the last. She took his hands in hers. “I know the truth, Papa. Felipe told me of the threat and that I found out the truth too late to change things. But you didn’t have to worry. I could never hate you. You and Mamá were so good to me.” “But, mi querida hija, I failed you, and you ran away. I hate to think how you might have been harmed.” “You had seemed so determined on Felipe. I was afraid you wouldn’t change your mind. That you wouldn’t believe me if I told you the little things he did to hurt me. Then I heard rumors that he’d hurt his previous wife, and I overheard a conversation that really frightened me. Even if you had changed your mind, Felipe had a plan to kidnap me. Running was the only choice I thought I had.” “I am sorry. I’ve been blind. After you left and he followed you, I began to hear stirrings regarding his reputation. He’d kept his bad side very well hidden with the use of money and threats. When your husband’s man came to see me, we found out things I’d never, ever suspected. Now there is a question whether he actually caused the fall that killed his late wife,” her papa said. He bent and kissed her forehead. “I do not deserve your forgiveness.” “Oh, Papa. Yes, you do. We all make mistakes. Just look at my handsome, intelligent husband.” She smiled across at Damien. “He thought I was an imposter.” She tried to sound indignant, but they all laughed. She pulled her papa into her arms and hugged him.

“How lucky can a woman get to have two wonderful fathers and one very dashing and handsome husband?” Belle asked. Her eyes shone with happiness. All the men in her life quickly closed the circle around her. **** Belle snuggled up against her husband. “I thought today went very well.” She raised her head to see his face. “Thank you for inviting all the neighbors and your friends and Father’s to meet Papa.” “I’m sure we’ve given the gossip mongers enough to talk about for the next year,” Damien said. He brushed her hair back from her forehead. “Everything about you is soft,” he murmured. “You’re changing the subject,” Belle protested. “Let me finish what I have to say.” Damien sighed. “As if anyone could stop you once you start, my love. Still don’t take too long. I have other activities in mind.” “Everyone seemed accepting of Papa. I don’t think it has upset Father for him to be here, do you?” “Not at all. Quit worrying.” “Good, because I’m asking him to visit us again in about eight months or thereabouts. I should be well on the way to regaining my strength by then.” She saw the puzzled look on Damien’s face and laughed. “Regaining your strength?” “Yes, love. After the birth of our first child.” Now, he stared at her in a daze. “I hope you’re not sorry, but it’s not unusual. At least not when two people make love as often as we do.” Damien pulled the covers back and touched her stomach. “We’re having a baby.” “I’m having the baby. You and Father will be pacing the floor downstairs.” “How did you see the doctor without me knowing?”

“I haven’t. Women know these things.” “Then you will see him tomorrow.” Damien started to get out of bed. “Where are you going?” “To send him a message.” Belle grabbed his hand. “Not tonight. Tomorrow will be time enough. You’re not going to cheat me out of our activities, as you called them.” He lay back beside her. “I don’t want to hurt you. Maybe we should wait until the doctor checks you.” “You talk too much.” Belle leaned over him and began to nibble at his lips while her hands ran over his strong body. She moved down and scattered kisses along his warm neck and brushed her lips across his chest. “Does this give you any ideas, my love?” she teased. With her ear against his chest she heard the rapid beat of his heart. “I’m beginning to get the idea, but don’t stop now.” He cradled her upturned face in his hands. “I do love you, my intriguing imposter.”
