ONE “Sex toys.” “Whipped cream… in all the right places.” “Handcuffs. I’ve always wanted to try bondage.” “Um, having sex outdoors, I guess.” Four pairs of eyes turned to stare at Alicia. Her mouth went dry and her stomach flip‐flopped as she tried desperately to think of an erotic resolution for 2008. Dammit, she wasn’t good at this kind of thing. She spent her nights reading stories to her seven‐year‐old daughter or catching up on laundry, not exchanging jaded sex talk with her girlfriends. Of course, the four women surrounding her weren’t exactly close friends. They were simply women from her office who had decided to have a girls’ night this New Year’s Eve. Alicia had agreed to come because she knew her social life needed a swift kick in the ass. She spent way too many weekends alone for a single twenty‐five‐year‐old woman. But now that she was actually here, drinking champagne and trying to act cool, she felt like an overgrown nerd. None of her coworkers had children; they were the kind of independent women who went to nightclubs and picked up casual lovers on their exotic vacations. As they waited now to hear her erotic New Year’s resolution, a deep pink blush stained her cheeks. How could she possibly admit that her resolution was simply to have any kind of sex – something she hadn’t done in years? They’d think she was the most pathetic loser in the world. “I want to do it in my hot tub.” It popped out of her mouth so naturally that even she was surprised. “I’m getting mighty sick of using that thing alone.” Her coworkers laughed knowingly. “Alicia, you dirty girl,” one of them teased. They clinked their champagne glasses together. “To 2008,” they toasted. “May the coming year bring us lots of mind‐blowing sex with lots of super‐hot guys.” The cold champagne sparkled in Alicia’s throat as she swallowed. Thank God none of her coworkers had seen past her world‐weary façade. Being known in her insurance office as a born‐again virgin would be just too humiliating. But silently, as she counted down the last moments of the year, she made her own private resolution: to find a man whoʹd reunite her with the ecstasy and power of sex once more.

TWO Brilliant sunlight sparkled on the snowbanks of the Torrent Elementary School Winter Carnival, illuminating the ice sculptures and giant snow slide in a blinding aura. Squinting painfully in an attempt to find her daughter amongst the other kids, Alicia slid on her sunglasses. Maybe they looked pretentious on a winter morning, but her eyes had always been sensitive to light. “You look like a movie star, Alicia,” called one of the other moms from the Polar Bear Tent. Alicia laughed hollowly and tucked away a red strand escaping from her ponytail. “Oh yeah, that’s me ‐ Miss Glamorous.” She was being sarcastic, of course. She hardly felt glamorous here at her daughter’s school carnival, but she did feel comfortable. That was a welcome change from the New Year’s Eve party the other night. Then she had been acutely uncomfortable, feeling like a fish out of water as the other women traded risqué sex stories and blowjob advice. Eventually they’d noticed her silence and asked if she was shy. She could only shrug with a foolish smile. They knew she was a single mother, having gotten pregnant in high school; no doubt they thought she’d been a wild teenage temptress with all kinds of naughty adventures in her past. If only, she thought bitterly. The truth was, the moment she gave birth to Erin, her love life had been dead on arrival. Not that she’d change the past, she told herself. Her beautiful little daughter was a jewel beyond compare. Still… It did seem unfair. She was still young, still energetic. Why couldn’t she meet a man who wasn’t threatened by her status as a single mom? God knows meeting guys was hard enough in her small town. It was so frustrating; whenever a cute new guy crossed her path, he’d flirt up a storm with her until she mentioned her daughter. Then she’d watch his face fall, knowing a polite excuse was about to follow. A real relationship with a real man was her dream, of course. But at this point she’d be happy just for a hot fling. Hey, I don’t want to marry you, she wanted to tell the guys she met. I just want you to rock my world for a night. You can resume your regularly scheduled program of beerfests and bars when it’s over, okay? Nancy, the other mom who’d called to her, trotted over. “No kidding, Alicia, youʹre looking great,” she told her. She gestured to the cup of hot chocolate in her hand. It steamed in the morning chill. “I don’t know how you stay so slim. I made my usual resolution to drop twenty pounds but here’s my sweet tooth taking over again.” Alicia smiled. “You look fine the way you are, Nancy.” Like most of the moms in her daughter’s class, Nancy had a good ten years on her but they were still close. “Easy for you to say – you’re still young. I wish I had your metabolism. Once I turned thirty, the pounds just jumped on.” Nancy turned and looked at where their daughters were lacing up their skates at the

small ice rink. “So how about you? Make any resolutions this year?” Alicia hesitated. She and Nancy were good friends, but she wasn’t sure how open she could be with her. “To give my love life a boost,” she said finally. “I’m sick of being alone.” Nancy looked sympathetic. “Aw, Alicia, you’ll meet someone. I know pickings are slim around here but you’re such a pretty girl. Don’t let your asshole of an ex‐boyfriend turn you against men, okay?” Alicia shrugged. “That was a long time ago.” The truth was, being dumped by Erin’s father had stopped hurting years ago. “I’m going to go help Lucy with her skates. Be right back.” Restlessly Alicia walked over to the rink and watched her daughter skate with a happy smile. Unable to stop herself, she slipped into a reverie of the past. For a moment, the ice rink disappeared and she saw it as it normally was in warm weather, a skateboard park where teenage boys flipped and turned their boards in all kinds of mind‐blowing tricks. She never watched them; never allowed herself to sink into her tortured adolescent longings. But now she couldn’t stop. She saw him as he had been years ago, the object of her virginal fantasy life – Dare Connelly. His real first name had been Scott but everyone called him Dare because he was the town’s biggest daredevil. From childhood on, Dare set out on ever increasingly dangerous exploits, from jumping off the canal bridge in elementary school to riding his bike off the public pool’s diving board. No punishment or expulsion bothered him. He’d simply return to what he did best – taking another of the breathtaking risks that earned him such a wide crowd of admirers. She could still see him clearly in her mind’s eye. Seventeen and taller than the other kids, graceful and loose‐limbed with a head of silky black hair that was constantly blown around by the wind, he dominated her imagination. His shining black eyes, always so alive with the thrill of adventure, were unlike any she’d ever seen. Skateboarding was what he did best – expertly riding, flipping, turning and leaping around the skatepark while the other kids watched in awe. She loved him from afar, of course. Dare was a wild boy, constantly getting suspended from school for backtalking the teachers or smoking cigarettes behind the equipment shed, and he dated wild girls. She was an honors student who didn’t date anyone at all. Besides, he was in the grade ahead of her. Sometimes – very rarely – she permitted herself the excitement of stopping by the skatepark after school to watch him glide by, black hair flying, his tanned face victorious. His hard‐muscled thighs and his expert command of his board fired up her dormant fantasies until she was wet and aching. At night her hand would creep into her panties as she fantasized about him crawling into bed with her and showing her the same kind of sexual expertise he commanded at the park. She knew he’d be good, knew he’d be the kind of boy to master her body in a way the other high school boys couldn’t. Then one night she had her chance. It was at a keg party the night of his graduation. She was thrilled to be there but kept to a corner, sipping her beer – she was never an accomplished drinker – and talking to the girls she knew. And then he came over. Swaggering slightly, his black eyes fixed on her, the dancing light of the bonfire casting golden shadows on his face.

Oh god, he was so beautiful. She could scarcely breath as he walked confidently up to her and said, “I’ve been wondering if I’d ever see you at any parties.” “Um – me?” It wasn’t an eloquent response but she was so in shock she couldn’t think of anything better. “Yeah, you. You’re Alison, right? I’ve seen you at the skatepark sometimes.” “Alicia,” she muttered, embarrassed that he had known she was watching him, and slightly offended he had her name wrong. But hey, at least he was talking to her. He had just graduated, after all; she’d never have this chance again. He knocked his cup of beer against hers. “Want to go for a walk?” The music of the party faded as she stared into his eyes. They stared back in a confident challenge, a hungry, sexual challenge. He wanted her. There was no mistake about what kind of “walk” he wanted to take. And she had been dreaming about this for so long. She had to go. “Okay,” she managed to say. Her thighs trembling, she finished her beer and walked away from her friends. Dare slipped a warm arm around her shoulders and pulled her to him. Aware of his hard muscles against hers, the heat of his body burning through his t‐shirt, she could scarcely stop shaking as he guided her toward the woods. The darkness of the trees enveloped them. As Alicia’s sight deserted her, the crickets chirping in the summer night and the cool sharp smell of the pine trees flooded her senses. This isn’t happening, this can’t be happening, she kept thinking. But it was. Dare’s hot, sinewy body, so confident and dangerous against hers, was a physical reality. That same beautiful boy she’d watched gliding and sailing around the skatepark was wordlessly inviting her to join him in a dream made flesh. She felt dizzy and close to fainting. Lust and anxiety flashed on and off inside her like warring signals. So many nights she’d imagined what his taut abs would feel like under her fingertips; what his pretty mouth would taste like over hers. She’d tried to envision his cock, long and hard and elegant. In her fantasies, Dare was the smoothest lover a girl would want, experienced and patient and masterful. But in reality, she was a scared virgin who’d only kissed a few guys. Fear of her own shortcomings paralyzed her desire and made her want to run back to the party. “You’re trembling.” His low voice was sexy and sweet. She wouldn’t have expected that sweetness from him, Dare, the wildest boy in town. His fingers curled around her side so perfectly. Somehow she sensed that he would know exactly what to say and do to coax her out of her inexperienced shell. She only had to find the courage to follow his lead…
4
“It’s cold,” she said shakily. She despised herself as soon as the words left her mouth. It’s cold? It was a June night, for God’s sake. But she’d inadvertently provided the opening he needed. ʺGuess I’ll have to warm you up.” His arms slid around her like twin, muscled snakes, pulling her against his chest. Oh, he was so warm, so hard. Surely no one had ever held her like this. Her nose pressed against his throat, close enough to smell his shampoo and the clean hot smell of his skin. His heart was beating as fast as hers, she realized, and the compliment this represented lasted only a moment before he tilted her chin up in the forest darkness to kiss her for the first time. His lips brushed hers lightly. Then they returned seeking a deeper kiss, a better kiss, more urgent and demanding and questioning. His kiss asked everything he’d been too shy to say, she realized; it asked if she’d wanted him as much as he wanted her all those afternoons at the skatepark. His kiss revealed a sweeter, more complicated Dare than his public image ever would have suggested. As his tongue slid softly over hers, she nearly swooned. He wants me, Alicia thought. Dare Connelly actually wants me. His hands slipped lower to grasp her waist. She leaned trustingly against him as he stealthily raised her shirt. At sixteen she’d still never been naked with anyone; her limited sexual experiences had been in dark bedrooms at parties, fumbling beneath clothes. But tonight she was with her number one crush, the boy she’d do anything for, and she intended to show him that she could be as adventurous as any of his other girls. She brazenly pulled off her shirt herself and tossed it on the ground. “Whoa,” he said and laughed softly. He slid his fingers under the pink straps of her bra, then hesitated. “You’re…” “What?” she asked, longing to hear an unforgettable compliment. You’re sexy. You’re beautiful. You’re the girl I’ve been waiting for. “Nothing,” he said after a moment. He began kissing her again, his lips moving on hers with a sensual power that stole her breath. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness of the woods enough to see him now, a tall masculine shadow towering over her. It inspired her to run her fingers through his silky black hair, a sensation she’d imagined so many times that feeling it for real almost blew her mind. Oh, Dare, you feel and kiss even better than I’d fantasized. Carnal ideas and desires jumbled in her thoughts, until she didn’t know where she wanted to touch him first. Dare lightly stroked the backs of his fingers over her breasts, making her shiver. “You’re so pretty, Alicia.”
5
Swallowing hard, she stepped back and unhooked her bra. Watching his black eyes widen in the darkness, she dropped that too on the ground. Silently praying he would be impressed, she stood topless in front of him. He laughed nervously. “Uh, Alicia, wow…” Trembling but bold, she lifted his hands and put them on her breasts. A muffled noise of lust sounded in his throat. After a moment of hesitation, he began to caress her nipples. Yet he seemed different now. His body was stiffer, held back from hers. “Um, Alicia, maybe…” “It’s okay,” she whispered. “I want you.” Immediately a raucous explosion of laughter burst from the bushes. A chorus of voices mocked hers in an artificial falsetto: “Ooo, Dare, I want you so bad!” Alicia wanted to die. Her heart plunged to her feet as she knelt on the ground and frantically groped for her bra and shirt in the dirt. The boys in the trees were still laughing hysterically, imitating her as they crooned, “Oh, Dare, fuck me good! Do it to me now, Dare, harder, harder!” Choking back her sobs, she found her shirt and pulled it over her head. Dare had stormed over to the bushes and was yelling at his friends, telling them to get the fuck out and shut the hell up and other commands, but she didn’t buy it. He had planned it, planned the whole thing. No doubt they’d noticed her watching him at the skatepark and thought it would be hysterical to lure the good little honor student virgin into the woods and see how far she would go. The fact that she’d practically stripped naked for him of her own volition just made it more humiliating. “You guys are assholes!” Dare shouted. “I’m going to beat your asses raw!” He came back to her. “Alicia, listen…” “Just leave me alone.” Her voice was thick and scratchy with unshed tears, deepening her humiliation. Finding her bra at last, she balled it up in her fist. “No, listen. I did not know those guys followed us into the woods. I swear to God.” A deep voice bellowed from the trees, “Oh cut the crap, Dare, you know damned well you had twenty bucks riding on this.” That was all Alicia needed to hear. She ran from the woods and ran from the party, not stopping until she reached her hours five miles away. She had been willing to lose her virginity that night but instead she had lost something even more precious: her self‐respect and her ability to trust her taste in men. *** Remembering it now, so many years later, Alicia still felt sick. She was a twenty‐five‐year‐old adult and mother today, and yet recalling the graduation party that night emotionally transformed her into the
6
shattered young girl she had been then. Dare had had that power over her; he had been her primary romantic and sexual fantasy for years before revealing himself as her most monstrous humiliation. Perhaps that was why she didn’t like to think about high school, or even look at the new crop of skaters when she took Erin to the park. She shuddered, remembering. “Hey, hey!” It was Nancy, leading both their daughters back from the ice rink. “You looked like you were going to pass out there, Alicia. You feeling okay?” “Yeah… yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking about the past.” She forced a smile. “It’s so bright out here, with the sunlight on the snow. It hurts my eyes.” She adjusted her dark sunglasses. Nancy wasn’t fooled. “Come with me and get some more hot chocolate. It’s time for the snowman building competition anyhow.” Alicia just wanted to go home. Instead she dutifully trudged after them to the field where kids were enthusiastically rolling together big balls of snow. All around her, parents watched with words of guidance and encouragement. As always, the endless pairs reminded her of her single status. Couples and other single mothers; that was who she met at her daughter’s school events. There were never any young single fathers around – not sexy ones at least. What a year this is turning out to be, she thought. First I go to that slutty New Year’s Eve party and make that stupid resolution, then I go for a hellish walk down Memory Lane with that asshole Dare Connelly. She took her long red hair out of her ponytail and shook it out, letting it blow in the breeze. Sipping her hot chocolate, she watched Erin struggling with her own snowman. Then a figure across the field caught her attention. Well, I’ll be damned, she thought. For once a sexy young father had shown up – and he appeared to be single. Certainly no woman was by his side as he cheered on a little boy near Erin. Alicia’s lips curved into a predatory smile as she took in his dazzling white smile and lush head of black hair. Like her, he wore dark sunglasses to block out the winter sun, but his dashing good looks were still obvious. Even dressed casually in jeans, boots and a winter jacket, he stood out here. For one thing, he was distinctively handsome and for another, he was her age. That alone separated him from the other parents. He noticed her across the field. His gorgeous smile dropped as they looked at each other. Then he slowly reached up and with a frown, removed his sunglasses. She did the same, trying to get a better look at him as they squinted at each other. Oh good God. That was Dare Connelly she was checking out. Her teenage fantasy – no, wait, her adolescent nightmare – was back in town.
7
THREE ʺErin!ʺ she hissed. Shoving her sunglasses back up her nose, she tried to get her daughter’s attention without attracting too much notice from the other parents. Her heart boomed as she prayed silently that Dare hadn’t recognized her. Or that she was wrong about his identity. Or that this was some weird New Year’s Eve dream from drinking too much champagne. As she hissed her daughter’s name again, she fearfully glanced up. Dare – or the man – was gone. For a moment, she truly believed she had hallucinated him. After thinking about him so much this morning, her mind had conjured up a modern, adult version of her old crush. That had to be it. Maybe it was a sign that she was going crazy, but hey, early senility was preferable to facing that asshole in person. “Erin!” she called again. Dare or no Dare, she was sick of the carnival. Being around the skate park, even transformed into an ice rink, brought up too many painful memories. She wanted to go home. Erin could build a snowman there. “Alicia – Alicia Barrett. Holy crap, it is you.” That familiar voice, deepened with maturity, rang in her ears like a bell of doom. She froze, feeling ice water fill her veins, then forced herself to turn around. There he stood. Taller and long‐limbed and more gorgeous than ever, the winter sun glinting off his silky black hair. That white, dazzling smile she remembered so well cracked his face – and a box of memories flew open, images of teenage Dare flying through the air on his skateboard and sauntering down the hall at school. His perfect face in the golden light of the fire that night of the graduation party. One agonizing moment of silence followed another. Her stomach jumped nervously around like a rabbit and her mouth was dry as dust. At last she forced a tight smile. “I’m sorry. I forgot your name.” Like the time you called me Alison, you macho lying asshole. “Dare. Dare Connelly.” His smile turned sheepish. “You’d think at twenty‐six, people would call me Scott by now but somehow my nickname stuck.” How dare he show up here chatting casually like they were old friends? Oh wait, his name was Dare. He dared anything because he was just that cocky and confident. She arched one skeptical eyebrow over her sunglasses. “Oh. Right. Well, nice seeing you.” She turned back to watch the snowman contest, though her heart was in her mouth. “Um, Alicia… wait.” His hand landed on her shoulder, sending a frisson of reaction through her. Her body jerked involuntarily and she scowled. “Yes?”
8
“Look… High school was a long time ago and a lot’s changed but… I don’t blame you for hating my guts. Can we talk a minute?” He had to be kidding. He really wanted to reopen her old wounds and make her discuss her humiliation? She wasn’t going to forgive him. No way. “I’m watching my daughter build a snowman right now,” she informed him tightly. “Maybe later.” “Alicia, just five minutes. Please.” His black eyes, shining like obsidian, bore into hers. Goddamn him for being so good‐looking. Even as her guts churned with emotion, some lost part of her girlhood responded with a pang to his smile. “Fine.” They walked away from the other parents. Alicia clutched her styrofoam cup of hot chocolate so tightly the cup broke, liquid spilling over her fingers. With a cry of irritation, she flung the cup in a garbage can. “Let me just start by telling you how great you look,” Dare said. He was speaking rapidly, as if he expected her to bolt at any moment. “But we’ll catch up later. Right now I want to tell you how sorry I am about what happened that night.” Almost shyly, he added, “You know … that night.” She made her voice very cool. “You mean the night you arranged with your friends to spy on us in the woods?” “No! Alicia, I never arranged anything! Those guys were assholes who followed us into the trees. Teenage boys, come on – they’re not known for their maturity and good manners. All these years I’ve wanted to tell you how pissed off I was and how I never would have set you up like that.” His words struck a chord within her. Tumultuous emotions flooded her as she struggled to revise the horrid facts of her romantic history. If Dare was telling the truth, she had missed out on the night of her dreams – possibly. She could have let him explain and they could have gone someplace else and she would have fallen back into his arms and … Stop! she scolded herself. He’s a liar, a player, a jerk. Now that he knows you have kids at the same school, he just wants to smooth things over so you don’t tell the other moms what a bastard he was back then. She shrugged with false detachment. The truth was, remembering those mocking voices from the bushes as she stood topless in the woods made her want to cringe and turn red all over again. “My friends were assholes,” Dare repeated softly. “I tried so hard to find you that night but you took off. I didn’t know how to get ahold of you... So maybe it’s coming eight years too late, but at least I’m finally getting the chance to apologize.” Alicia fell silent. She wasn’t ready to forgive him or dismiss that old humiliation so easily. Didn’t he
9
understand how horrible that had felt to a young girl of sixteen? How could he even have the gall to speak to her now? His brow knitted, as if he read her mind. “Okay,” he said. He took a step back, awkwardly toying with his sunglasses. “I just wanted to put that out there. You don’t believe me… I guess I wouldn’t either. But seriously, Alicia, you don’t know how many times I’ve wished that night turned out differently.” She found her voice at last. “Well, that’s something we both wish.” She tucked a loose strand of red hair over her shoulder and forced herself to meet his eyes. She was a confident adult, she kept reminding herself, not a scared teenage virgin anymore. Dare relaxed into that wide, white smile as if forgiven. “I just moved back to town around Christmas,” he confided, changing the subject. “Nick is in the elementary school. What grade is your daughter in?” “Second.” Her body was still torn between conflicting emotions, her muscles stiff with anger even as her heart beat fast at his devilish smile. “Nick too. How about that.” He tilted his head toward the ice rink. “Bet ten years ago when we were at the skate park, neither of us saw this in our future.” She smiled wryly. He was right about that. “You’ve got me there.” “Alicia….” sang a coy voice. Oh no. It was Nancy, and from the triumphant gleam in her eyes, Alicia could tell she interpreted this conversation with Dare as an entirely flirtatious one. Even worse, she was going to do her part to throw them together. “I have terrible news,” Nancy sighed. “I know you agreed to store the sleds at your place but it turns out I have no way to get them there!” Her manner was so over the top contrived that Alicia flushed with embarrassed. God, how mortifying. It couldnʹt be more obvious that Nancy was aiming to fix them up. ʺI can load them in my back seat,ʺ she told Nancy through gritted teeth. ʺNo big deal.ʺ ʺOh, you couldnʹt possibly!... There are so many. You need someone with a truck or at least a big car.ʺ Nancy looked pointedly at Dare. His gorgeous smile broke forth again – like the sun coming out, Alicia thought foolishly. He might be a liar and a bastard, but he certainly was a pretty one. That smile of his sliced through her like a knife into butter. “I have a truck,” Dare said. His black eyes danced with pleasure. “I’d be glad to collect the sleds and bring them over.” Nancy, you meddling idiot. Now Dare would actually have to come to her house when she didnʹt even want him in the same country. ʺThanks,ʺ she managed to get out. Nancy was already drifting away with a discreet smile on her lips, having done her work. “It’s, ah, the sledding portion isn’t until later. You can
10
just bring them over after the carnival’s done.” Dare’s grin was wider than ever. “Then you better give me your address, huh.” You’re not off the hook yet, she told him silently as she wrote it out for him. You might be looking fine these days but you blew it once… and it’ll take more than a pretty smile to get a second chance. She handed the paper to him. “Don’t be late,” she said briefly. “I have plans tonight.” Then she walked across the winter carnival toward her daughter without looking back.
11
FOUR The deep blue shadows of a winter evening were settling around Aliciaʹs small house as she prepared dinner that night. The carnival was finally over; her toes were just beginning to thaw out as she moved around the kitchen, seasoning potatoes with rosemary and garlic. Erin had wanted pizza tonight but Alicia said no. They ordered pizza too many nights already, usually when Alicia was too tired from the office to cook. On the weekends she put time into creating nourishing, healthy meals. And of course, the last thing she wanted was Dare showing up here to find a greasy empty pizza carton on the table and assuming she couldnʹt cook. Dare. What did she care what he thought of her? He had no idea of how hard sheʹd had it as a single mom, no idea at all... Except that he might, of course, if he was a single parent too. His son Nick was Erinʹs age; that meant heʹd become a father right after high school. She couldnʹt help wondering who Nickʹs mother was. Dare had left town after graduation on what she assumed was a continuing adventure of his natural thirst for life. Sheʹd envisioned him traveling to distant lands, conquering one willing woman after another, not changing diapers. You were wrong, Alicia. Wrong about a lot of things apparently. She stopped in her tracks and squeezed her eyes shut with pain. She tried not to think about the past. It just hurt too much. Hurt to remember all of the ostracism of getting pregnant her senior year and the horrible way people had treated her. If she had to add another giant mistake to her past ‐ blaming Dare for a prank that wasnʹt his fault ‐ she couldnʹt take it. It was bad enough she had chosen the wrong guy when she dated Erinʹs father. If sheʹd given up the right guy when she ran away from Dare, sheʹd just sit down and start howling. ʺMom?ʺ Erin was holding the phone out to her. Alicia hadnʹt even heard it ring. ʺThanks, honey,ʺ she told her. She watched Erin skip back to the den as she lifted the receiver. ʺHello?ʺ It was ridiculous but her heart was already pumping at the thought of Dare calling. ʺItʹs me!ʺ sang Nancy. ʺIs Mr. Hottie there yet?ʺ ʺNancy, donʹt even! How could you set me up like that? I know that guy ‐ from high school. He was my....ʺ Alicia fell silent as self‐consciousness overtook her. He was my crush. My skater boy fantasy, my unrequited love. ʺYour what?ʺ Nancy baited. ʺOh come on, Alicia, let me live vicariously through you. Iʹve been married so long Iʹve forgotten what a man that cute looks like. What exactly happened between you two in high school?ʺ
12
ʺNothing... well, not much. We made out one night at a graduation party and uh, it didnʹt go well.ʺ Nancy sucked in her breath. ʺMy God, Alicia, youʹre not telling me this is Erinʹs....ʺ ʺNo! No, please. Look, I canʹt talk about it now. Heʹll be over in two hours to drop off the carnival sleds and I look like hell.ʺ ʺHmmm,ʺ Nancy said meaningfully. ʺWell, allow me to tell you why I was calling. Lucy wants Erin to spend the night.ʺ ʺOh, great. Let me ask Erin...ʺ Then Alicia understood. ʺNancy, youʹre just trying to give me the house to myself. Sheesh, Iʹm not going to jump his bones when he gets here! Heʹs going to drop the sleds off and thatʹs it.ʺ ʺOr youʹre going to invite him in for a glass of wine and a nice long walk down memory lane,ʺ Nancy suggested. ʺCome on, Lucy and Erin have a ball together. You could use a night off, in any case.ʺ It did sound nice. She could slip in her hot tub, read a good book, relax... Or you could finally find out if sex with Dare is as good as youʹve always imagined. ʺOkay,ʺ she said at last. ʺWe should be done with dinner in an hour.ʺ ʺIʹll pick her up then. See you in a bit, Alicia. And for Godʹs sake, let yourself go tonight. You two are obviously attracted to each other ‐ have some fun for once!ʺ It was good advice, Alicia thought as she hung up. But Nancy didnʹt understand all the baggage she had. Having fun just wasnʹt a simple thing for her. As she put dinner on the table, her mind returned to her last year of high school. Dare was long gone; she was a senior now and determined to find a boyfriend. That humiliating party had left a bad taste in her mouth. She was going to find real love this time but with someone safe. Someone who wouldnʹt set her up. And she found him at the first football game ‐ Michael Seretti, another senior who was in her calculus class. Serious and studious, Michael was attractive enough but too shy to be pursued by many girls. Alicia thought he was perfect. Dating him, she felt entirely secure ‐ secure enough to give her virginity to him within a few months. She had become pregnant almost immediately. Just as quickly, Michael dumped her. Her safe, sweet boyfriend, the one she thought she could trust, showed her a much more calculating face. ʺI got into Ivy League schools!ʺ heʹd yelled. ʺThere is no way Iʹm saddling myself with a kid! My futureʹs about studying and partying... not having some screaming baby around!ʺ It was funny, Alicia thought now, how often people described her as trying to ʹtrapʹ him. Who was really trapped? Heʹd gone off to his intended future of campus coeds and sheʹd gotten stuck with stretch marks and baby spit‐up. Heʹd probably had dozens of erotic dalliances over the years, while she spent her
13
nights alone. He didnʹt even pay his own child support; his parents sent the checks, even though he was on his own with a good job now. Heʹd never seen Erin nor spoken to either of them. That was fine with her. They didnʹt need him. But now she could only shudder at bizarre tricks Fate had played on her. Wild, gorgeous Dare really had been the right guy, while safe bookworm Michael turned out to be a rat bastard. Who knew? But I wouldnʹt change a thing, she thought as she called Erin to dinner. Not if it meant giving up her. She bent down and kissed her daughterʹs head. ʺYouʹre having a sleepover with Lucy tonight,ʺ she told her. ʺHow does that sound?ʺ Erin was predictably enthusiastic. As soon as they finished eating, she tried to stuff as many of her new Christmas toys into her bag as possible. Alicia watched with a smile, trying to ignore the steadily growing anxiety rattling her nerves. In just an hour now, she and Dare were going to be alone in her house. Alone for the first time ever. They werenʹt kids now at the skatepark, or teenagers at a drunken graduation party. They were adults and they were going to be alone in a house with hours ahead of them. As soon as she saw Erin safely off with Nancy, Alicia headed upstairs. Her stomach was squirrelly as she showered, brushed her teeth and carefully applied makeup, something she rarely bothered with these days. In her lingerie drawer she found a black lace bra and matching thong that sheʹd never had anyone to impress with until now. She pulled on a tight cashmere sweater that showed off her curves, tight jeans that did the same, and brushed out her long red hair until it shown. She looked in the mirror. Yes, she was a woman now, not a girl anymore. Yet she was hardly the sexually experienced seductress Dare would surely expect. It might be years since their ill‐fated night in the woods, but was she really any more equipped to handle a hot‐blooded hunk like him? Surely he knew all sorts of sexual tricks to blow her mind and melt her body into helpless, longing need... The doorbell rang. Her heart hammering furiously against her chest, she headed downstairs. There he stood. His black hair glinting in the porch light, Dare Connelly waited on her doorstep with a confident grin as she unlocked the door. Once again a shiver raced through her body at seeing him. It was just so odd, seeing the grown‐up version of the teenage skater boy she had adored so fiercely. Dare was so tall and hard now, with a look of experience in those pretty black eyes. She didnʹt doubt that he was as restless and hot‐blooded as ever ‐ that same lust for life danced in his expression. But that only made him twice as dangerous as heʹd been in high school, didnʹt it? She opened the door, her knees suddenly weak. ʺHi. Did you bring the sleds?ʺ Brilliant question, Alicia. I doubt heʹd show up without them. ʺYeah, theyʹre in my truck. Did you want them in your garage?ʺ
14
Suddenly his smile was gone and his voice was cool and professional. She felt like an idiot. Here she was in her best lingerie, trying to look seductive, when he had only come over to drop off some sleds. He was just being a good neighbor, probably; trying to mend fences with an old classmate who was a mom at his kidʹs new school. She looked away, not wanting him to perceive the sexual interest in her green eyes. ʺYes, just follow me. Iʹll show you.ʺ Not bothering to throw on a coat, she headed outside and showed him the space she had cleared in her garage for the sleds. They worked together wordlessly, stacking them on top of each other in the cold darkness. All the while a little voice screamed inside her that this was going too fast, theyʹd be done in two minutes and then he would drive off into the night leaving her alone with her torturous memories of the past. ʺAll done,ʺ he announced briskly. He dusted his hands clean of the falling snow. ʺThanks for doing this.ʺ ʺI didnʹt do anything ‐ you did,ʺ she pointed out. She hugged herself, shivering in the cold. ʺYeah, well...ʺ Instead of looking at her, he stared down at her driveway, where the falling snow was rapidly accumulating. Then he said, ʺLook, I know you still donʹt trust me, Alicia. But Iʹd really like to come inside and talk to you. Got a cup of coffee?ʺ She hesitated. It wasnʹt that she didnʹt want him. It was that she wanted him too much. All these years sheʹd been fantasizing about that perfect fling that would electrify her body and leave her heart untouched ‐ but Dare Connelly could effortlessly invade both with just that perfect white grin... She found her courage. ʺSure. Come on in.ʺ He followed her into her house. As he stomped snow off his boots and removed his jacket, she took a deep breath. Everything about him, from his long, hard torso to the perfect way his jeans cupped his firm ass, was mouthwatering. He had to know that, didnʹt he? Surely women drooled over him every day. Yet as he glanced up at her, she suddenly knew that he wasnʹt as confident as he seemed. Not tonight. The way he wasnʹt meeting her eyes, the artificial distance in his voice ‐ Dare was nervous around her. The question was why. A guilty conscience? Or a reawakened lust? A sudden brazenness surprised her as she said, ʺWe could do coffee but Iʹd rather have wine. How does that sound?ʺ Sliding into a chair at her kitchen table, he looked surprised. ʺUm, yeah ‐ wine would be great. Iʹm chilled to the bone but Iʹm starting to warm up.ʺ ʺIf you really want to warm up, we should get in the hot tub.ʺ Good God, Alicia, are you possessed? What has gotten into you?
15
Dareʹs jaw dropped. His gorgeous face looked stunned ‐ an expression she had never seen on him, ever, she realized with pleasure. Sheʹd seen him look victorious, angry, smug and joyful but she had never really seen him astonished. Except of course for that night she casually took off her bra in the woods. Remembering it made her smile. Yes, she knew how to take control with Dare. Sheʹd had the key all along. ʺUm, uh ‐ you have a hot tub? Seriously?ʺ His voice sounded choked. ʺYes, on the patio. Itʹs kind of fun in the snow ‐ you wonʹt get sick or anything if you donʹt linger outside.ʺ His black eyes studied her in amazement. He didnʹt know if he was being played or seduced or simply invited for a friendly little dip in a hot tub, she realized, and his expression alone was priceless. She poured two glasses of wine and handed him one. Suddenly she felt confident and powerful, and she liked it. She was going to fulfill an old high school fantasy and her New Yearʹs resolution at once tonight ‐ and with the hottest man sheʹd ever seen. She sipped her wine. ʺCome on. This way.ʺ ʺAlicia, um, I donʹt have a bathing suit...ʺ ʺSo weʹll go in our underwear.ʺ She said it casually as if she routinely hot‐tubbed with gorgeous men in their boxer briefs. His eyes dropped to the curve of her breasts, so delectably soft in her cashmere sweater. As he stared at her body, his eyes grew hot with a smoldering hunger that reminded her of the wild boy he had been once. ʺDeal.ʺ Lifting his challenging gaze to hers, he stood up and pulled off his sweater. His chiseled, bare chest faced her like a sexual summons. Flustered, she dropped her eyes and found herself staring at his crotch. Was it her imagination or was he already growing hard? Something was swelling in his jeans and it looked promising enough to fulfill all of her wildest fantasies... A naughty smile snaked across Dareʹs face like a taunt. Casually he undid his jeans.
16
FIVE Alicia’s eyes dropped to his crotch. A wild, shaky thrill filled her like fire as Dare slowly slid his jeans down his narrow hips. Black boxer‐briefs cupped his groin in all the right ways, the cotton stretching to accommodate the growing length of his erection. Oh, he looked so good. So impossibly, lusciously good. His long hard legs boasted just enough muscle to make her think of being locked in them as he moved against her. His rippling washboard abs were those of a model. Flustered and hot, she realized she was gawking. Embarrassed, she quickly looked up at his face, hoping he hadn’t noticed her blatant awe. No such luck – a smug smile unfurled across his face. “I don’t see you getting undressed,” he chided gently. “You’re the guest,” she countered. “I wouldn’t dream of not letting you go first.” He laughed openly. “Come on, Alicia. I’m starting to feel like an ass, standing here in my underwear. Do you even have a hot tub?” “No. This has just been a trick to get you in your skivvies.” She spoke so seriously that his smile dropped. “Has.. has it?” Alicia walked up close to him without taking her eyes from his. When she was almost touching him, she abruptly pulled her cashmere sweater over her head. This time, she was pleased to note, it was his gaze that dropped down. Amorous hunger spread over his expression as he hotly studied her black lace bra. “You… Uh…” She swallowed a smile at his stammer. When she slipped her sweater back on a moment later, his outraged face made her laugh aloud. “Alicia, what kind of game are you playing?” “I have to turn the hot tub on,” she pointed out devilishly. “It’s cold out. Be patient.” She slipped outside to the patio. She loved this hot tub, loved relaxing in the hot waters on a snowy night. Nothing was more sensual than the cold snowflakes melting on her hot, flushed face as blissfully warm water enveloped her body. As she turned it on, she resisted the temptation to look through the patio doors at Dare. This night was turning out better than she had hoped… She just had to stay in
17
control. So far she undoubtedly had the upper hand and that was how it was going to stay. Until he touches you, Alicia. Then you’re going to explode like a volcano from the first sex you’ve tasted in years. Ignoring the little voice in her head, she returned inside and flashed him a bright smile. “Almost ready.ʺ “About time,” he said gruffly. “Dare, come on. It’s not like we don’t have a history of me standing around half‐naked while you had your clothes on.” He groaned and covered his face. “You are still mad. I knew it.” She was sorry she had brought it up. “Sheesh, it was just a joke.” To distract him, she lifted her sweater again. He snatched it away from her, giving her a challenging look. “This time I’m keeping it.” Something in his manner was too determined. The erotic fire in his black eyes rattled her. Could she really handle a hot‐blooded man like Dare? Fighting for control, she coolly unbuttoned her jeans and slid them off. Her heart beat fast and loud as she kicked them to the side on the carpet. And then she stood before him in just her bra and panties. Self‐consciousness and arousal shot to her head in a rush of blood as her thighs began to tremble. Her nipples, achingly stiff, poked through the black lace; the wispy scrap of silk clung to her damp sex. Tremors of lust were already quaking between her legs and she knew that once he was on top of her, she wouldnʹt be able to hold back. A hot blush spread across her chest and face. She tried to hide it by grabbing the wine glasses and heading outside. “Come on, letʹs do this.” Too late, she wondered exactly what she looked like from behind in her underwear. Glancing behind her, she saw Dare’s eyes were fixed firmly on her bottom. Okay, then. Stifling a yelp at the cold January night air, she slid into the tub. That initial sensation of hot bliss covering her was like heaven. She closed her eyes in appreciation, but snapped them open a moment later when she realized she had missed the spectacle of Dare climbing into the tub. Too late! The water already lapped at his magnificent chest, a content smile advertising his satisfaction. “This is incredible,” he murmured. Not as incredible as you, she thought. She sipped her wine and watched his face, her heart giving a poignant pang as she noted the boy lost inside the man. Yes, this dark hunk was all manhood now, his broad shoulders and hard chest reminding her of the years that had passed. His cheekbones were more defined now, his mouth more demanding. But in his long eyelashes and the black locks clinging to his flushed face, she could still see the wild daredevil who had stolen her heart at the skatepark.
18
Inexplicable tears pricked at her eyes. Those had been such perfect years in their own way, when life had been a safe romantic haze of daydreams and fantasies and love letters she never dared to send… With nonchalant grace, his leg leaned against hers underwater. The feel of his muscles and the light masculine hair covering his skin made her jump. Oh God. If just his knee could make her insides go haywire, what would the rest of him do? Dare didn’t seem to be physically affected at all. Instead he opened his eyes and looked at her. His eyes were confident but serious. “So let’s talk… How has life treated you since high school, Alicia? Erinʹs age tells me you got pregnant your senior year. That had to have been tough.” “Tougher than you can imagine,” she said lightly. She didn’t want to ruin tonight with talk of her high school ostracism. Memories of eating alone in the cafeteria and being shunned by students and teachers alike wasn’t exactly putting her in the mood. “Fair enough… And who’s Erin’s father, if I may ask?” He sipped his wine but his eyes were intent with unasked questions. He wanted to know who had been so important to her that she had had his baby, what man had played that pivotal role in her life. She could see it in his expression. No doubt he imagined some great love affair behind her pregnancy, some adolescent Romeo and Juliet torn apart by meddling parents or the simple deterioration of time. If only. “His name was Michael,” she said at last. “He was in my calculus class and he dumped me as soon as I told him.” She finished her wine abruptly. Should have brought the whole bottle out, she thought. Oh well. She stared into her empty glass to avoid facing the mix of pity and astonishment on Dare’s face. “I… Alicia, I’m sorry to hear that. The guy sounds like a complete dumbass to turn his back on you and his responsibilities…” Like you never did. You were the baddest bad boy in school and even you stepped up to the plate when your son was born, right, Dare? If it had been you that got me pregnant, you would have stayed by my side… But that was a dangerous line of thinking. “He was and still is,” she agreed bitterly. “He doesn’t even pay his own child support – his parents do. And no, he’s never seen Erin. For now I just tell her that her daddy lives so far away he can’t visit and pray that she doesn’t develop some weird rejection complex.” “With you as a mom, I’m sure she’ll be fine,” Dare said gruffly. “Thanks. Nick is adorable, by the way – where is he tonight?” “With my sister.” Something in his tone told her he didn’t want to discuss his son. Maybe Nick’s mother
19
was as sore a subject with him as Michael was with her. “Listen, I can’t even imagine what that did to your outlook on men. First that thing with me, then Erin’s dad… I hope it didn’t turn you against all of us permanently.” She stared down into the frothy greenish‐lit waters. Their churning bubbles made a merry sound in the cold night. They reminded her of her erotic New Year’s resolution and that reminded her of the sad state of her love life these recent years. She wanted to admit that to someone, to say that she had struggled for so long to be the best mother she could, going to school for her IT degree, getting a good job, putting a roof over her and Erin’s heads… but that she was lonely, dammit, and yes, she ached for the love of a sexy, understanding man. Now Dare Connelly was in her hot tub, his long hard thigh casually leaning against hers, and dark and sexy as could be. But now he was starting to sound understanding too and that made him a more powerful force than her fragile heart could take… “I – I’ve been mostly alone since having Erin,” Alicia finally said. “Single moms aren’t exactly in demand.” “Bullshit,” he said roughly. “A gorgeous woman like you must beat guys off with a stick. If you’re alone, Alicia, it’s because you want to be.” Her green eyes widened. “I’m not alone on purpose, Dare. I mean, sure, it’s nice not having to deal with relationship crap and worry about Erin getting attached –“ “I hate that asshole for breaking your heart.” Dare’s black eyes were stormy. Alicia waved a dismissive hand and laughed bleakly. “Oh, please. Michael wasn’t nearly as important to me as you were.” The words fell across the hot tub like a revelation she could never take back. She stared down into the churning waters. Oh God, she had actually said that aloud. It was preposterous, of course, saying that some skateboarding daredevil she barely knew was more important to her than the guy who had fathered her daughter – ludicrous, in fact. She’d had too much wine. Surely Dare understood that she had just misspoken. She had to say something to fix this painful silence now, say something, anything – Dare leaned across the water, put his hands firmly on her knees and kissed her.
20
SIX The heat of his mouth shocked her. It awakened old memories, recollections of their kiss in the woods so vivid that for a moment she felt like a scared sixteen‐year‐old girl again. But the way Dare’s lips moved on hers snapped her back to the present. He kissed her like a man, not a boy – like a passionate, experienced man who knew what she wanted and knew how to deliver it. She succumbed to the power of his mouth, opening to admit the soft heat of his tongue. Spreading her knees wide, Dare was on top of her a moment later. He was all muscle and warmth, his body radiating a hard strength that intoxicated her senses. Breathless and overwhelmed, she ran her fingers through his damp black hair as she kissed him. Every part of him awakened different nerves in her body, nerves that had been dormant for too long. His arms slid around her back and held her tight against him. His legs and hips moved against hers in a tantalizing rhythm, his chest sliding against her until her lace bra was pulled askew. But it was his erection that spilled fire through her body, a stiff, long pillar that butted against her most private softness. She moaned and pulled his hips against her, grinding herself against his hard cock. She knew only two skimpy layers of silk and cotton stood between them and actual sex and that she was very close to crossing a irrevocable line. But just like that night of the graduation party, Dare’s masculine heat infected her with impulsive lust. She didn’t care about being cautious or sensible or anything else. Her teenage fantasy was here in her hot tub and she was going to play with every inch of him. Dare pulled back from their kiss. “Alicia…” His sexy black eyes stared into hers. He looked as lustfully mesmerized as she felt. “What?” she whispered. His voice shook. “I don’t want to rush this. But you’ve got me so aroused I can’t even think straight…” He ran one finger down her décolletage until the tip caught in the band of her bra. He pulled it out just slightly from her skin, threatening to liberate her breasts. “I’ve been waiting years for you,” she told him. “You couldn’t rush me if you tried.” He looked down at her bra, the black lace wet with water. Her dark pink nipples were hard and pushing against the fabric. He glanced up at her eyes, then lifted his hooked finger, raising the bra up and over her breasts. “You’re perfect,” he whispered. He cupped her breasts in both hands, moving his fingers over their stiff points. A wild excitement filled her. No one had touched her in so long and his fingers moved over her with a

clever, sensitive skill. Feeling almost drunk with lust, she leaned her head back to let the falling snow melt on her feverish face. Dare looked so gorgeous at that moment, the occasional snowflake catching on his black eyelashes before melting on his cheekbone. His black hair was wet and clinging to his face, his sensual lips swollen from kissing her. This is a face I could look at forever, she thought dizzily. She stopped herself a second later. There would be no forever talk; this was just a fantasy made flesh, an erotic New Year’s resolution fulfilled. This was sex and only sex. As Dare sucked her nipple into his mouth and circled it with his tongue, she reminded herself to enjoy it on that level. Dare was prettier than should even be legal for a man, but he was still a wild one at heart. The erotic skill with which he was lavishing her body proved that. Her legs slid around him, pulling his hard‐on snugly against her. Hungrily she plucked at the waistband of his boxer‐briefs, yearning to slide them down his hips. Obediently Dare lifted his pelvis; she took that as a sign to proceed. Her fingers worked his underwear down, aware this was the first man she had undressed in oh, so long. A moment later his cock sprang free. Rock hard and larger than she’d expected, it seemed to find her center with unerring instinct as Dare readjusted himself on top of her. Now she could feel him with mindblowing acuity through her tiny scrap of a thong. Oh God. Normally she would want to draw this out with him, explore every inch of his gorgeous body with tantalizing leisure, but right now a fierce aching was building between her legs that demanded satiation. Dare raised his wet face with a groan. “I can’t take this,” he gasped. He moved the head of his cock against her clit, sending a wave of surprised pleasure through her. “Me neither,” she said breathlessly. She began to move her pelvis against him, slowly rubbing her clit against him. They stared into each other’s eyes as they teased each other through her thong. Dare pushed back her long wet hair, curling his fists in it until she gasped. That fiery hunger that she had always sensed in him now blazed in his eyes, half‐arousing and half‐alarming. She had awakened something wild and primitive in him tonight and where that would take them, she didn’t know. “Iʹm going to go crazy if I donʹt fuck you,” he growled in a voice rough with lust. Tingling with excitement, she reached for his cock. But to her surprise he moved back from her and leaned against the other end of the hot tub. “Undress for me first. I want to see you naked.” Pink spots of self‐consciousness stained her cheeks. True, he was naked and she was already topless but being ordered to undress somehow made this all the more naughty. She reached under the bubbling waters to remove her thong. He shook his head. “No. Stand up and let me watch.” Oh God. She couldn’t do this. Letting him feel her in the tub was one thing; the water partly shielded
22
her. But she could hardly slip into her born‐again virgin persona now. On shaky legs, she stood up before him. As he watched with hungry eyes, she slid her thong down her thighs and kicked it off, spreading her legs for him. She felt so exposed. Standing naked in the winter night, as the snowflakes twirled down over her flushed and shining body, exciting contrasts of hot and cold kissed her skin and stiffened her nipples. The night breeze danced across her pussy, arousing her even as she yearned to sink back into the warm safety of the tub. But she didn’t move a muscle as Dare reached up and began to play with her. “Stay right there,” he commanded softly. He stroked her clit, studying her closely. “Seeing this was my number one fantasy in high school.” Her face burned hotly. “And?” “And you look even sexier than I imagined.” He pulled her to him and began to lavish her folds with hot, experienced strokes of his tongue. Alicia groaned and held his head for support, her legs trembling with desire and pleasure. Dare’s mouth moved on her so skillfully, warm and clever with just the right amount of pressure in just the right places. An intense bliss was rising in her blood, blotting out all other sensations but the heat of his lips and tongue on her sex. “Don’t stop,” she whispered. She knew that this was more than she bargained for, that both her faded memories and hottest fantasies couldn’t hold a candle to the red‐hot euphoria spreading through her body. Dare slid two fingers into her, finding her ready and wet, and began to waggle them inside her. Her orgasm slammed through her like a crushing wave, breaking inside her again and again in wet, searing throbs. She clutched his hair helplessly, her fingers digging into his scalp, as she came all over his mouth and fingers. “Oh… God.” She collapsed back into the water, legs shaking uncontrollably. Her mouth was dry, her body raged with erotic fever, and she couldn’t think or move. “Have some wine.” Dare poured her another glass and held it to her lips. She sipped it, too pleased and too embarrassed to open her eyes. “Hey. Look at me. Alicia, are you shutting me out?” She shook her head. “No, it’s just… It’s been a while.” She took a deep breath. “It’s been a long while since I’ve – done that.” Gathering her courage, she opened her eyes and looked for Dare’s reaction. His handsome face only looked tender and lustful. “Well, get used to it.” He stroked her wet cheek. What did that mean? Get used to it? Did that mean this was the start of something real? She shook her head. Sex, Alicia, sex. And yet why did it have to only be sex? Dare wasn’t a kid anymore, he was an adult, a single father. He had the same responsibilities and obligations she did; his wild days were long behind him. Slowly she felt her heart open to him just a little as he moved a gentle thumb over her lips. “We’d better head inside,” he said, feeding her another sip of wine. “I don’t want you to get sick.”
23
“Good idea.” She turned off the tub. Although she had just stood naked above him as he pleasured her, she hesitated now as she stood up. She held her sodden bra and panties to her in a ludicrous attempt at modesty and let him precede her into the living room. As she shut and locked patio doors, Dare fetched a soft chenille throw from her sofa. “Here,” he said, wrapping it around both of them. “This should warm us up.” She smiled as he struggled to make the throw fit. “It’s not big enough,” she pointed out. “I’ll get some towels.” In truth the chenille did feel nice against her skin. Dare held her tight against him. This was their first naked hug, she reflected; and somehow, the way she fit into his arms seemed as if he was born to hold her. She felt her defenses slip down a little further as she buried her face in his chest. “I have a better idea,” he said in her ear. “How about we get toasty in your bed?” His still‐hard erection prodded her stomach as if to second the notion. She kissed his nipple. “I can’t think of a finer idea.” With a sultry glance up into his eyes, she took him by the hand and led him down the hall. The comforting darkness of her bedroom closed around them. Dare stood behind her as she lit a candle next to the bed, waves of urgency and need radiating from him. As the flame leapt into life, the dark red coverlet of her bed beckoned them. Yet she turned to see Dare studying everything else in the room – her bookcase, her photos, her vanity littered with lotions and makeup. “Sorry,” he said, catching himself. “I always wondered what your bedroom looked like in high school. Now that I’m in it…” “… you can’t wait to see what I look like spread eagle on my bed?” She caught his hands and put them on her breasts. “Read my mind.” Eagerly massaging her, he covered her mouth with a hot, renewed passion. Despite her recent satisfaction, that fiery lust roared back to life inside her. With sudden voracity, she pulled him against her and let her hands wander hungrily over his taut, trembling muscles. Oh, he felt so good. His ass was firm and round in her hands as she weighed their heft and tightness. Her fingers drifted down to the backs of his thighs, making him jump as they drifted between his legs. Yes, this was where she wanted to explore. The silky stretch of his perineum and the hairier weight of his balls were a delicious contrast. She tickled and stroked him, loving the mix of frustration and joy on his face. She knew exactly what he wanted but he was going to have to wait. She had waited years for this and she was going to take her time. She pushed Dare down on the bed. In the candlelight his black eyes shone like glass, but he looked up at her with a petulant, hungry expression that reminded her of a dog wanting to be fed. Hands on his
24
thighs, his legs were open just enough to show his painfully engorged cock, pointing toward the ceiling. Stifling a laugh, she almost took pity on him then and there – but instead she snapped her fingers and said, “Wider.” “Wider – what?” “Your legs. Spread them wider. Show me what you’ve got.” His sensuous lips fell open with outrage. “You’ve got to be kidding –“ “Do it, Dare.” Tauntingly, she added, “I showed you mine. Now you show me yours.” He groaned. “Just like on the playground, huh?” She shrugged. “I don’t recall ever playing that game with you at the skatepark… So start making up for lost time.” She snapped her fingers again. “Now, please. Spread your legs.” Biting his lip with frustration, he obeyed. His hard, muscular thighs opened wide for her, revealing all of his most private splendor. The dancing candlelight cast a dancing golden light over his skin. His tight, perfectly shaped balls seemed to beckon her fingers, his long, erect cock smooth and velvety. Set off by his taut thighs and rock‐hard abs, Dare was the picture of mouthwatering sex appeal. Dizzying lust spread through her like melting honey as she gazed at him. So many nights Dare’s naked body had starred in her fantasies, but this was better beyond her best imaginings. He leaned back on his hands, thrusting his hard cock at her. “So?” he asked tauntingly. “Do I pass inspection?” She shrugged again, feigning cool disinterest. “How would I know? You can’t tell how a car performs by looking at it. You need to take it for a test drive.” She pushed him down flat on her bed. Oh yes, he looked positively luscious this way. From his broad shoulders to his narrow hips, his wet black hair framing that naughty grin, Dare stretched out before her like the fuck of the century. But she refused to show she was impressed. He had made her stand up before him like a cut of meat – and even though it had turned her on more than she would ever admit, she was going to do the same to him. She took his shaft abruptly in hand. “Not bad,” she said noncommittally. “Nice length, decent girth –“ “Nice? Decent? That is a grade A magic wand you got in your hands there –ʺ She jumped on top of him without warning and pressed her naked breasts against his mouth. “No talking,” she warned. His tongue crept out and licked her nipple; she gave his balls a swift squeeze. “I’m not kidding. I’m in charge now, and if you want to come like I just did, you’ll do as I say.”
25
Chagrin flashed in his eyes but his cock jerked beneath her with arousal. She smiled as he obeyed her and stayed silent. “Good boy,” she whispered, replacing her breasts with her mouth and kissing him as tenderly as she dared. “I’m going to be good to you… as long as you do as I say.” She kissed him one more time. His lips softened beneath hers and opened, but she didn’t allow herself to fall into the spell of his hot welcoming mouth. Instead she slid down the length of his gorgeous body, allowing herself to tweak his nipples and trace the light trail of hair on his stomach that led directly to heaven. His cock stirred again. This time, she straddled his hips and took him back in hand, tracing his swollen head over her pussy. “Is this what you want?” she asked cleverly. He started to answer then stopped. She smiled. “Good boy. You remembered. For that, you get a gold star.” She reached into her nightstand. After making her silly resolution, she’d bought condoms and lube just in case… and now she was glad she had. Hoping she remembered how to roll it on correctly, she lightly caught his cock between her thighs, teasing him to distract him from her clumsiness. At last she had him sheathed. Dare grunted passionately, thrusting himself at her. She took a deep breath. This was it. She had waited so long and now she was finally going to have sex with the perfect man. Positioning herself over him, Alicia lowered herself onto his hard cock. He drove in insistently, stretching her tightness until she moaned. He was just big enough to make it almost hurt and yet it felt divine too as he pushed in further. Oh my God, this is really happening, she thought crazily. I am fucking Dare Connelly and it feels so good I am going to lose my mind. She let out a long breath, allowing herself to adjust to the massive hardness inside her. Slowly she began to rock back and forth on him, getting used to this rhythm that was building between them like a long‐ forgotten melody. It seemed so natural, yet so thrillingly new, as the moments passed and their bodies moved together in a passionate, primitive beat. Dare speared in and out of her like a red‐hot piston, moving her hips until she gave herself over to the helpless joy of being taken over. Bouncing wildly on top of him, she caressed her own breasts as he fucked her, each thrust shooting incandescent joy through her blood. “You feel too good,” she moaned. “I’m going to…” And then it was happening, a shivery tension spreading through her body. A wild euphoria seized her, breaking through her in intense, liquid waves. With a stifled groan, Dare pulled her down on top of him, hips working rapidly in the throes of his own orgasm. She buried her face in his wet neck, whimpering as the final spasms went through her. At last she lifted her head. Dare smiled tenderly at her, wiping her wet hair back. But he said nothing.

Then she remembered and began to laugh. “You can talk now,” she told him. He laughed. “Thanks, that’s kind of you.” He squeezed her tight. “Alicia… I can’t believe this happened tonight. When I moved back to town to help with Nick, the last thing I expected…” “Wait. Hold on.” His words didn’t sit right with her. “What are you talking about, help with Nick? Aren’t you his custodial parent?” “Parent?” He frowned. “Alicia, Nick’s not my son. He’s my nephew. Where did you get that idea?” She stiffened. All of the assumptions she made that day, beginning at the carnival, washed back on her. She mistook Dare for a single father. From that she deduced he’d shown unsuspected responsibility in getting the mystery girl pregnant, then demonstrated even more maturity in raising his son single‐ handedly. It was based on that she’d decided he was not just the adult version of the reckless boy he had been. “My sister has Hodgkin’s disease,” Dare went on, “so I came back to help her out with Nick. I didn’t mean to mislead you. I’ve never been married or had any kids.” She was quiet. Her disappointment was so intense she couldn’t speak. She thought Dare was like her, a single parent who would understand her struggles. But in fact he was just a young carefree bachelor who’d bedded her within hours of their reunion. There was no way he would want to stay around she and Erin. For him, this had just been a fast, hot adventure on a cold winter night. Which was what she thought she wanted, so why did she feel like crying? He hugged her. “Hey… what’s going on? You’ve turned into a statue.” She shook her head. “I thought you were – never mind. Look, you don’t have to stay. I’m sure you need to get going.” She got out of bed and groped for her bathrobe, hanging on the closet door. “What?” Dare exclaimed. “You’re kicking me out?” She turned and stared at him. “Look, I thought you were a single father. Grown up, adult, with obligations. But you’re not – you’re just like every other guy that won’t give me the time of day because of Erin.” His jaw dropped. “What are you talking about? I’m right here, giving you the time of day and more.” “And now you’re going to leave.” She couldn’t keep the bitterness from her voice. She was angry, angry because she had made a stupid assumption and angry because she had fallen for Dare Connelly twice now like a dumb lovesick girl. When would she learn? Dare slid out of bed and wrapped his arms around her. He rested his chin on her head. “I’m not going anywhere, Alicia.” She wanted to believe him. But her body was stiff, unwilling to relax as he tried to hold her closer. “Of

course you are,” she whispered. Her throat ached with the embarrassing urge to cry. “No,” he said. “I’m staying right here. For as long as you want me.” As he hugged her tightly, she looked out at the falling snow. It was so different from that summer night in the woods long ago when she had believed the worst about him and ran out on something potentially wonderful. Her life had been forever changed as a result. Now the same opportunity was presenting itself again. Slowly she relaxed and let herself melt into him. Dare’s warm nakedness covered her, his heart beating against hers until she knew that this was a dare worth taking. “I might want you a long time,” she whispered. He kissed her and smiled. “Here’s hoping.” THE END
