Entdecken Sie Amsterdam! Ein neugieriges Summen liegt in der Luft. Es übertönt das Rattern der Straßenbahnen am Rembrandtplein. Auf der Terrasse des Caf é Opera sitzen jene, die auf den Beginn der Nacht warten, wenn Bars und Diskotheken ihre schmalen T üren öffnen und breitschulterige Portiers mit einem kurzen prüfenden Blick darüber entscheiden, ob man für diese eine Nacht dabei sein darf. Kaum eine andere Stadt auf dem Kontinent swingt so wie Amsterdam. Die Szene wechselt so schnell, dass Location oder DJs - abends noch angesagt - im Morgengrauen schon out sein k önnen. Aber bevor Sie sich dem Nachtleben widmen, sollten Sie die Stadt bei Tageslicht erkunden. Die Grachten, eine harmonische Mischung aus Wasser, Holz und Stein, öffnen sich Reisenden am besten, wenn man an ihnen entlang bummelt und die Häuserreihen, Ulmen und Linden sich im Wasser widerspiegeln sieht. Amsterdam l ässt sich am besten zu Fuß entdecken. Spürt man das Pflaster unter den Füßen, schnuppert den Geruch der Gassen, mischt sich unter wildfremde Menschen, erlebt man die authentische Atmosphäre der Stadt. Der Grachtengürtel, der sich halbmondförmig um das Zentrum legt und von der Heren-, Keizers- und Prinsengracht gebildet wird, bietet sich als Anfang an: eine harmonische Mischung aus Wasser, Holz und Stein. Ein wunderbarer Anblick ist es, wenn sich die Ulmen und H äuserfronten im Wasser spiegeln.
Amsterdam hat viele progressive Ideen hervorgebracht. In den 1970er- und 1980er- Jahren war die Stadt Paradies für Aussteiger und Ausgeflippte, Tummelplatz f ür Drogenh ändler, Zuhälter und Hausbesetzer. Tolerant und offen, wie die Stadt ist, drohte sie an diesen eigentlich positiven Eigenschaften zu ersticken. Ab Ende der 1980er Jahre warf die Stadtregierung das Ruder herum. Schritt für Schritt fand man zu einer gewissen Ordnung zur ück. Der liberale Geist, die Offenheit für alternative Lebensformen ist geblieben. Als erstes europ äisches Land gestattete Holland Homosexuellen die Eheschlie ßung; hier dürfen Ärzte Sterbehilfe leisten, wenn es vom todkranken Patienten gew ünscht wird. Amsterdam pr äsentiert sich als Stadt der Gegensätze und des Wandels: Hier die alten Grachtenhäuser und Kan äle, dort neue Wohnviertel und Kolossalbauten. Rund um die Altstadt wächst ein Gürtel von Büro- und Geschäftszentren, etwa in Amsterdam Zuidoost, Teil der Satellitenstadt Bijlmermeer. Rund um das Fußballstadion ArenA entsteht ein neues Erlebniszentrum. Mittelpunkt ist eine Konzerthalle und der Boulevard VillaArenA mit Gastronomie, Gesch äften und Wohnungen. Über ein Drittel der 725 000 Einwohner Amsterdams hat eine andere Nationalität als die holländische - damit ist die Stadt kosmopolitischer als manche andere europ äische Metropole. Nicht nur aus allen holl ändischen Provinzen, Flandern, Deutschland, Polen, Frankreich, England und Skandinavien wanderten im Laufe der Jahrhunderte Menschen zu, auch die Bewohner aus den alten Kolonien, dem heutigen Indonesien, aus der Karibik und Südamerika fanden hier eine neue Heimat.
Nach dem Grachtenspaziergang - oder alternativ einer Sightseeingtour per Schiff - warten Amsterdams Museen auf einen Besuch. Das weltbekannte Van Gogh Museum, das Rijksmuseum oder das Stedelijk Museum sind Kulturstätten, die ihresgleichen suchen. Bei der Wanderung durch die Stadt laden Cafés und Bars - rund 1500 an der Zahl - immer wieder zur Pause ein, von gem ütlichen bruine cafés bis zu gestylten Kaffeetempeln wie das Luxembourg, wo man gern sieht und gesehen wird. Wer genug hat von Kultur geht Shoppen: Kleine Läden in den schmalen Gassen des Grachteng ürtels bieten von Kunsthandwerk bis zur Hippiemode alles, was das Herz an Nutzlosem und N ützlichem begehrt - auch am Sonntag. Am Abend schließlich lässt man sich hineinziehen in das bunte Leben rund um die Grachten und besucht vielleicht Amsterdams bekanntes Nachtschwärmerviertel um den Leidseplein.
Mit dem Auto in die Stadt Amsterdam gehört inzwischen zu den vier bei Touristen beliebtesten europ äischen St ädten - doch das bringt auch Probleme mit sich. Vermeiden Sie generell, mit dem Auto nach Amsterdam zu fahren. Am schlimmsten ist es am Samstag oder Sonntagmittag, wenn auch die Holl änder aus der Provinz anreisen, um einzukaufen. Au ßerdem sind die Straßen schmal und meist Einbahnstraßen. Die Zahl der Parkplätze ist beschr änkt, und die Gebühren sind hoch. Außerdem werden von der Polizei rigoros Radkrallen angeschraubt und Autos abgeschleppt. So etwas wird teuer. Im Zentrum ist alles bequem zu Fuß erreichbar. Straßenbahnen und Radfahrer haben Vorfahrt. Unter dem hohen Andrang leiden aber häufig auch der Service und die Küche.

Amstelkring Bei diesem Museum handelt es sich um eine ehemalige Amsterdamer Schutzkirche, die hinter der Fassade eines Kaufmannshauses (1661–63) versteckt war und Ons’ Lieve Heer op Zolder hie ß, was soviel bedeutet wie »Unser lieber Herrgott auf dem Dachboden«. Der sich über drei Stockwerke erstreckende katholische Zufluchtsort war dem heiligen Nikolaus geweiht und diente bis 1887 als Kirche. Anschließend wurde das Gebäude als Museum eingerichtet. Es soll an jene Zeit erinnern, als die herrschenden Calvinisten den Katholiken verboten, ihr Bekenntnis öffentlich zu praktizieren. Zu besichtigen sind Barockaltar, Salon, Altarbild und Empfangszimmer, K üche, Schlafzimmer und mehr. Mit seinen schmalen Stiegen, Kammern und Gängen vermittelt das sehenswerte Haus auch einen Eindruck davon, wie im 17. Jh. B ürger in Amsterdam wohnten. Der Gebäudekomplex aus dem 16. und 17. Jh. war zunächst ein Kloster gewesen (St. Lucien), das 1578 von den Calvinisten konfisziert wurde. Äußerst liebevoll restauriert und inmitten der Innenstadt gelegen, vermittelt er mit seinem Schachtelwerk von Innenh öfen und Durchgängen ein Gef ühl vom alten Amsterdam. Besonders augenf ällig ist das monströse Stück mit den 17 gepanzerten Schützenbrüdern, 1531 von Cornelis Anthonisz gemalt. Weiterhin finden sich Werke von Rembrandt und dessen Zeitgenossen, etwa Frans von Mieris und Jacob van Ruisdael. Auch das um 1480 gemalte »Wunder« von Jacob Cornelisz hängt hier. Jh. lebten. Im Auftrag eines fl ämischen Kaufmanns wurde es 1671/72 vom Architekten Adriaan Dortsman im klassizistischen Grachtenstil erbaut. Erster Mieter des Hauses war der Rembrandt-Schüler Ferdinand Bol. 1884 kaufte es Jonkheer Willem Hendrik van Loon. Hinter dem Haus der Garten im geometrischen franz ösischen Stil. De Pijp Das einst graue und arme Arbeiterviertel erf ährt seit einigen Jahren die erstaunlichsten Wandlungen. Im »Quartier Latin des Nordens«, in dem zwischen Stadhouderskade und Jozef Israëlskade, Amsteldijk und Ruysdaelkade etwa 100 Nationalit äten wohnen, gibt es eine Vielfalt an Läden, Einkaufsstraßen, exotischen Imbißstuben und Restaurants, den bekannten AlbertCuyp-Markt oder Diamantenschleifereien, etwa in der Tolstraat. Die Diamantenstraße wird links und rechts von Arbeiterhäuschen aus dem 19. Jh. ges äumt. Unweit von ihr, in der Van Woustraat 84, überfiel am 18. Februar 1941 die »gr üne Polizei« der deutschen Besatzer den jüdischen Eissalon Koco. Die Deutschen nahmen den Widerstand zum Anla ß, die ersten Razzien durchzuf ühren: 425 willkürlich aufgegriffene Juden wurden deportiert. Die Bevölkerung reagierte knapp eine Woche sp äter, am 25. und 26. Februar 1941, mit dem sogenannten Februarstreik (Februaristaking), an den jedes Jahr mit einem Schweigemarsch erinnert wird. Tram: 3, 4 (Stadhouderskad); 10, 24, 25 (Albert Cuypstraat) Entrepotdok Einstmals dienten die Ma - gazine als Umschlagpl ätze für zollpflichtige Waren. Das Dock- Entrepôt, umgeben von schiffbaren Wasserstra ßen, wurde im Rahmen eines Stadterneuerungs-programms in Sozial- und Eigentumswohnungen umgestaltet. Aus den Magazinen des 18. und 19. Jhs. schuf man dabei eine originelle Wohnlandschaft. Eine Ziehbrücke führt zum Gel ände von Artis, dem Amsterdamer Zoo, und weiter zum botanischen Garten, dem Hortus Botanicus. Hoogte Kadijk, Tram: 9, 14 (Plantage Middenlaan) Königliches Palais (Koninklijk Paleis) Als Rathaus der Stadt entstand in den Jahren 1648–55 auf 13659 Fichtenstämmen das heutige K önigliche Palais im klassizistischen Stil. Baumeister dieses einzigen profanen Monumentalbaus der Stadt war Jacob van Campen. Ein gewaltiger Fries, auf dem Seeungeheuer und allegorische, der Friedensgöttin huldigende Figuren zu sehen sind, ziert die Fassade. Der Bau war Sitz der Stadtverwaltung, mehr aber noch Repräsentationsbau. Das zeigen noch die marmorverkleideten S äulenhallen mit den überdimensionalen, von den Rembrandt-Schülern Govert Flinck und Ferdinand Bol geschaffenen allegorischen Gemälden. 1808, unter Louis Bonaparte, diente der Bau als Residenz. An jene Zeit erinnert die Empire-Einrichtung mit Leuchtern, M öbeln und Glocken. Seit 1935 ist der Bau Staatsbesitz – mit der Königin als Hausherrin. Hin und wieder nächtigen hier Staatsgäste. Zu besichtigen sind u. a. der Bürger-, der Gerichts -, der Schöffensaal und die Empire-Sammlung. 29. Mai–29. Das Filmtheater wurde 1921 im aufwendigen Art - déco Stil erbaut. Nach einer grund- legenden Renovierung im Jahr 1984 (allein an dem kunstvollen Art-déco-Teppich im Foyer wirkten 60 marokkanische Frauen mehrere Monate lang) erstrahlt das Theater wieder im Glanz der fr ühen 20er Jahre.
