Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley was born in 1935, in Mississippi. His family was poor. They moved to Memphis Tennessee in search of better opportunities. What influenced Elvis and his music? First, there was his mother Gladys. For his eleventh birthday, Elvis wanted a rifle. Gladys convinced him to get a guitar. Then there were the revivals, or religious meetings he went to. Elvis was influenced by the gospel music and by the way the preachers stirred up the crowds’ emotions. Finally, there was Memphis. Memphis was a center for blues music and had a radio station that played gospel, blues, and rhythmand-blues. Elvis often listened to his station. He became a truck driver. One day in 1954, he stopped in at the Memphis Recording Studio and, just for fun, recorded a song. The studio head heard the song and immediately recognized Elvis’s potential. He called Elvis back for a real recording session. Elvis was an instant hit on the radio and soon went on tour. Again success came more from spontaneity than from deliberate plans. As Elvis said, « Everybody was hollerin, and I didn’t know what they were hollerin, at… When I came offstage my manager told me they were hollerin, because I was wiggling my legs… I did a little more, and the more I did the louder it went» . Teenagers loved Elvis and rock and roll. The music critics of the time, however, were unimpressed. They found Elvis « unspeakably untalented and vulgar» with « no discernible singing ability.» But most criticism of Elvis and rock and roll had little to do with music. Typical headlines read: DOES ROCK AND ROLL CAUSE DELINQUENCY? TEENAGE MUSIC CRASE HAS PARENTS WORRIED. Elvis and rock and roll were blamed for the nation’s problems. The music was called « atheistic» , « criminal» and « a threat to democracy» . Yet his popularity only grew. Elvis’s career was interrupted in the late 1950s, when he went into the army. When he came out, he turned to acting. Most of his films were not very good, but they were financially successful. In 1968 Elvis returned to live performances. But to many people these performances were like a bad imitation of his former self. Elvis also had problems in his personal life, as well as problems with his weight and with drugs. Elvis died in 1977, at age 42. The Beatles replaced Elvis in the early 1960s as the most important figures in rock. When asked about Elvis John Lennon said, « Before Elvis there was nothing.» Elvis’s mystique lives on. Each year thousands of fans visit his mansion in

Memphis. Elvis look-alike contests are still popular. And each year there are many people who claim they have seen, not just a look-alike, but Elvis himself. You can tell your mother is worried like Forest Gump’s mother in the movie. With a partner, role-play the conversation between parent and teenager. Follow Up I In what way does Forest Gump’s life pattern resemble the start of Elvis Presley’s career ? II What do the terms « segregation» and « desegregation» mean? The Rise of Segregation. The Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments – added to the U.S. Constitution between 1865 and 1870 – ended slavery, made black citizens, and gave black Americans the right to vote. During the reconstruction, a period after the war when the Southern states were under military rule, blacks voted and were elected to office. It seemed as though the former slaves might be incorporated into American life on an equal basis with other citizens. But this didn’t happen. One reason was that there was no real land reform. Plantations were not broken up, and most blacks still owned no property. Another reason was racism. Upset by black freedom, many Southern whites argued for segregation – for the separation of blacks and whites. Whites used violence against blacks. Lynching, or hangings committed by mobs, became common. Southern states passed laws to keep blacks from voting – for example, by imposing taxes and literacy requirements. By the early twentieth century, every Southern state also had laws enforcing segregation – blacks and whites were separated in schools, parks, trains, hospitals and other public places. The Civil Rights Movement. The civil rights movement gained strength in the 1950 s. Blacks had fought in World War II, and after the war many blacks had migrated from farms to cities. They were less willing to put up with unequal conditions. The Montgomery bus boycott, in 1955, was an important event in black’s struggle for equal treatment. Buses in Montgomery, Alabama were segregated. Whites sat in the front of the bus; blacks had to sit in the back. One day Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, was on her way home from work. The bus became crowded, and she was told to give her sit to a white man. This, too, was the law. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. She was arrested and fined. This incident angered Montgomery’s black community. It was time to change the law, community leaders decided. And they thought of a strategy: they would boycott – refuse to use – the buses. Since many bus riders were blacks, this strategy was effective – and was fiercely fought by the white community. The boycott lasted for over a year. In 1956 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was against the law of the United States. One of the civil rights movement’s great leaders emerged from the Montgomery boycott. The boycott had been partly organized by the then – unknown minister of Montgomery’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, a man named Dr. Martin Luther King, Dr.Jr., who advocated nonviolent protest. In the early 1960s there were many sit-ins, in which protestors would, for example, sit at segregated lunch counters. There were also voter registration drives, in which volunteers registered people to vote. Although these civil rights efforts were nonviolent, they often met with violent responses on the part of
8
mobs and the police. Civil rights workers were jailed, beaten, and sometimes even murdered. By the mid-1960s the civil rights movement had gotten the attention of the nation and of Congress. Congress had passed laws making segregation illegal, making job discrimination illegal, and strengthening voting rights. The movement had achieved many of his goals. However, King and others realized that these changes in the law were not enough. There was still much discrimination and prejudice, and blacks on average earned far less than whites. King was convinced that problems of poverty- of blacks and whites, in the South and in the North- had to be dealt with. In 1968, he was organizing a Poor People’s Campaign. On April 4, while visiting Memphis, Tennessee, to speak to striking workers, King was assassinated. America has made great progress. But King’s dream of true equality for all still has not fully come true.

Say whether, in your opinion, he was an unusual President or Just an ordinary one. (Read the extract below). John Fitzgerald Kennedy: Thirty Fifth President (1961 - 1963) John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the youngest man elected President, he was the youngest to die. Of Irish descent, he was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29,1917. Graduating from Harvard in 1940, when his PT boat was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer, Kennedy, despite grave injuries, led the survivors through perilous waters to safety. Back from the war, he became a Democratic Congressman from the Boston area, advancing in 1953 to the Senate. In 1961 he became the first Roman Catholic President. His Inaugural Address offered the memorable injunction: « Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country» . As President, he set out to redeem his campaign pledge to get America moving again. His economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II; before his death, he laid plans for a massive assault on persisting pockets of privation and poverty. Responding to ever more urgent demands, he took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation. He wished America to resume its old mission as the first nation dedicated to the revolution of human rights. His vision of America extended to the quality of the national culture and the central role of the arts in a vital society. Kennedy did a lot to solve the Cuban crisis during which the world trembled on the brink of nuclear war. He realized that both sides had a vital interest in stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and slowing the arms race. The months after the Cuban crisis showed significant progress towards the goal of « a world of law and free choice, banishing the world of war» . This progress led to the test ban treaty of 1963. John F. Kennedy’s administration thus saw the beginning of new hope for both the equal rights of Americans and the peace of the world.
