32. WHY SHE FAKES IT You think she’s happy. She sounds pleased. She’s making all the right noises. She’s moaning and breathing heavily. She came… you think. Or did she? She could very well be faking it. To men who are able to come quickly and easily with a few thrusts, faking it seems alien. Why pretend? Why not just come? Well, it’s not always that easy. The reasons women fake it are often as varied as women themselves.

36. DIET MYTHS: METABOLISM Metabolism Myth: Eating six small meals a day will boost metabolism. After Body for Life came out in 1998, a lot of people started eating more frequently. In his book, author Bill Phillips asserted, “Studies show eating often helps accelerate the metabolism, so you burn more calories.” Again, Phillips used the word “studies,” yet the book lacks a single footnote or a bibliography.
38. CAN YOU BE TOO WELL ENDOWED? When it comes to the world of penises, it’s a commonly held belief that bigger is better. Most of the time it is. What woman doesn’t love the added friction of a big penis? But even the most dedicated of size queens may find that sometimes a too-large penis can be more than a mouthful -- literally.
44. TOP 10 ROMANTIC XMAS GIFTS Despite what you may think, a woman’s idea of romance isn’t a kitchen appliance (too 1950s) a bottle of perfume (too cliche) or roses (too generic). And despite popular opinion, it’s not the price tag that counts, it’s the thought. The more time, effort and thought you put into her gift -- and the more you personalize it -- the gushier she’ll get. With those often-overlooked facts in mind, this year, make sure she’s bursting with cheer (and gratitude) by putting one of these top 10 romantic gifts under the tree.
46. CAN A MAN BE RAPED? We all know that a woman can certainly be raped while drugged and full of terror, but a man, well, a man has to sort of function to complete the task. But can he function on drugs or at gunpoint? I know men who can’t even pee if someone is watching.

BLACK & DECKER SUREGRIP LASER LEVEL Hanging photos, artwork, shelves, and anything else on your wall while getting it perfectly straight and level can be hard — but it doesn't have to be. The Black & Decker SureGrip Laser Level ($30) makes it so by securing to your wall with a combination suction cup and silicone ring to eliminate marks, offering an integrated vial that changes from red to green when you've got it level, and a laser line that emanates from left or right, to ensure that everything on the wall is at the right height. The only way it could be easier is if it had an arm to reach out and hammer nails into the wall itself.
ROGUE SISU WAR HAMMER We've gotta admit: pounding the hell out of stuff with a giant hammer sounds like a great way to get a workout. The Rogue Sisu War Hammer ($125) offers you the ability to do just that, with an empty weight of 14 lbs., a removable back plate for adding/removing weight — up to 28 lbs. if you fill it with lead shot — and a 38-inch handle with a passthrough design to provide greater leverage and maximum durability. Oh, and "Sisu" is the Finnish word for stubborn determination, which you'll need to finish your workout after a few swings of this beast.
STERIPEN FREEDOM UV WATER PURIFIER Finding safe drinking water isn't always as simple as it sounds — so next time you head south of the border, take the SteriPEN Freedom UV Water Purifier ($120) with you. This highly-portable UV water purifier runs off an integrated battery that recharges over micro USB, and can destroy over 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa in a standardsized glass in just 48 seconds. As a bonus, it also features instant-on technology, and LED indicators that can double as a flashlight. Unless, of course, you like the idea of drinking nothing but Corona the whole trip.

DESIREMAGAZINE DECEMBER 2011
MR. HEATER HERO Short of starting a fire where ever you happen to be, heat isn't the most portable of commodities — as a matter of fact, you normally need to seek out the great indoors to keep yourself comfy on cold winter days. Unless, of course, you have a Mr. Heater Hero ($170). Powered by a standard propane tank and an integrated battery that runs for eight hours without the need to recharge, the Hero provides 35,000 BTUs of heating power, while its QBT burner system makes sure you retain your sanity with 50% less total noise than traditional forced air heaters. Great for the garage, tailgating or remote man caves/camps.
NEST LEARNING THERMOSTAT When we heard the iPod's creators were planning a new product, we surely weren't thinking about HVAC systems. Yet here we are, staring longingly at the Nest Learning Thermostat ($250). This gorgeous, intelligent gadget learns from your habits, programming itself in about a week and using its colorful display to help you learn more energy-efficient and money-saving habits, while sensors keep track of whether or not you're at home. It has a Wi-Fi connection makes sure every Nest in your home is aware of the other and the weather outside, so it can understand how the changing temperatures affect your heating and cooling needs. You can even control it over the web via a computer or iOS device. Sure, $250 sounds like a lot for a thermostat, until you realize that it's controlling half of your heating and cooling bill.

BOXEE LIVE TV
CANON EOS C300 CAMERA
For anyone thinking of cutting the cord with their cable company, losing out on live broadcasts is often the number one thing holding them back. Boxee Live TV ($50) aims to bridge this gap by connecting the Boxee Box to an HDTV antenna or unencrypted cable connection, giving you access to local broadcast stations, and replacing the typical, boring guide with a friendly showfinding interface that lets you receive recommendations from friends, and even remove channels that you never watch.
The Canon EOS C300 Camera ($20,000) leans on the company's recent triumphs in DSLR video to deliver a unique camera aimed squarely at the motion picture crowd. Features include an all-new, Super 35 mm-equiv alent, 8.29 megapixel CMOS sensor with oversized pixels for greater per formance in low light and reduced noise, a compact body, a DIGIC DV III image processor, dual CF card slots, a full array of industr y -standard terminals and a front-facing lens mount capable of accepting either industr y standard PL mount or EF EOS and EF Cinema lenses. The only downside? It peaks at 1080, so if you're looking to future-proof your footage, you'd best give Scarlet another look.
TOM BURR PING PONG TABLE Art meets gaming in the Tom Burr Ping Pong Table ($45,000). Created by the well-known artist and limited to just 10 examples, this unique and insanely priced table is sculpted out of black rubber — making it quite durable while adding a bit of bounce to your balls — and features clean, solid lines that help make it as pleasing to the observer as it is to the player. In addition, Neiman Marcus will donate $2,500 to Big Brothers Big Sisters for each one sold, so at least some of that cash will be going to a good cause.
ASUS EEE PAD TRANSFORMER PRIME Do you think Hasbro is getting a cut on this? Oh, sorry, didn't realize you were reading already. Anyway, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime ($500) is the world's first tablet to sport Nvidia's crazy quad-core Tegra 3 processor — codenamed Kal El, presumably after Superman (DC Comics dolla bills y'all) — and will also offer a 12-hour battery, a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800-resolution Super IPS+ display, an eight-megapixel camera and an optional $149 keyboard dock which may or may not be named after a comic book character.

DANCIN DOGG OPTISHOT INFRARED GOLF SIMULATOR The OptiShot Infrared Golf Simulator ($399) combines pinpoint accurate swing analysis in a highly realistic, three-dimensional visual golf environment, all in the comfort of your own home. OptiShot allows you to play replications of some of the world's most famous golf courses, like Torrey Pines and Big Horn Golf Club in Southern California. Distance and direction of a golf shot are determined at the point of impact. True simulation uses scientific methods to capture impact data, and relays the results in real-time to the player in a visual display that replicates each shot. Dancin' Dogg combines sophisticated optical sensor data with three dimensional replicated courses. www.optishotgolf.com
ROBOT BOXING MACHINES Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots has nothing on these. Arriving in a package weighing 850 lbs. (!), these Robot Boxing Machines ($17,000) take recreational robot warfare to a new level. You and buddy each climb inside one of the beasts, and use a thumb-triggered button and two independent joysticks to activate the pneumatic-powered, tire-treadfisted arms, while a Honda gas engine powers the hidden wheels, letting you float like a tank at up to 3 mph for up to five hours of fighting. Just the thing to liven up your holiday gatherings.
PICO DOLLY POLAROID Z340 INSTANT DIGITAL CAMERA Get the best of both photographic wor lds with the Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera ($300). Spor ting a body that's immediately identif iable as a 'roid, the Z340 mixes a 14 megapixel sensor and 2.7-inch LCD with a built-in Zink pr inter, allowing it to spit out 3"x4", full-color pr ints in no-time, without the hassle of ink car tr idges and with the ability to pr int 25 photos per charge. Take that, silly Polaroid-mimicking apps.
You know the real dif ference between Hollywood-looking video and the stuf f you've been shooting on your phone or DSLR? Proper camera movement. Even the steadiest of hands can add unwanted shake, so eliminate the possibility altogether with the Pico Dolly ($90). This simple, sturdy unit features a metal dolly unit with a tripod mount, a reposition-able 11" arm, a clamp for holding phones or cameras that lack a tripod mount and rotating wheels so you can shoot in a circular motion or in a cur ve. And hey, it's a helluva lot simpler and cheaper than hiring an actual camera crew. www.desiremagazineonline.com

BODY & STYLE
DEMONBELLS Integrating kettlebells into your workout is a great way to quickly build muscle — but they aren't exactly the most attractive things to have laying around your house or office. Demonbells ($80-$200) aim to solve that problem by adding detailed face designs — and a lot of attitude — to the front, making them equal parts fitness tool and conversation piece.
REMINGTON TOUCH BEARD & STUBBLE TRIMMER When you think about it, changing tiny plastic combs out just to try and get your facial hair the right length is pretty archaic. The Remington Touch Control Beard & Stubble Trimmer ($50) does away with this concept for good by giving you control of an LED touchscreen, offering up 175 different lengths from 0.4mm to 18.0mm, or a wide enough range to handle nearly every style, from standard stubble to a moderate mustache.
BACON CANDY CANES What is there to say? We're quickly approaching the holiday season, and that means candy canes. So why not get some Bacon Candy Canes ($5) instead of the traditional kind? They look the same, but taste like bacon, which means they'll go down a lot easier with all the beer you'll be drinking. Just make sure you don't get them mixed up — because nothing says "Happy Holidays" like a peppermint Grolsch. And by "Happy Holidays", we mean "sorry for puking on your dog."

MOONSHINE COLOGNE Smelling like a man is more complicated than just working outside all day, drinking a beer and basking in the aroma of your own sweat and booze. It means smelling like manly things, without repelling others. Things like the forest, black pepper, tobacco, leather and gin — all scents you'll find in Moonshine Cologne ($75). This "gentleman's cologne" arrives in a modest bottle, inside a burlap sack that's protected by a wooden box, which is slightly more impressive than the presentation for our last delivery of real moonshine.
SOLID GRAY BACKPACK It's not every day you come across a real innovation in backpacks, but then again, it's not every day you come across a Solid Gray Backpack ($165). These unique bags feature a folding hardshell design, EPDM foam lining and straps for keeping your tablet or laptop safe and secure, two interior compartments for keeping small items handy, a built-in document clip — so your papers don't end up smashed at the bottom of the bag — and a flexible fit, which means your back will like it just as much as your eyes do.

DUCATI1199 Panigale D
ucati has unveiled the long-awaited 1199 Panigale Superbike alongside its entire 2012 range in a stylish Press Conference at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan, Italy. Setting a new benchmark in the motorcycle industry with their ground-breaking and innovative new Super bike, the Italian manufacturer’s incredible lineup of dream motorcycles are now set to be exhibited from 10-13 November at EICMA 2011, the 69th edition of the Milan International Motorcycle Show. The impressive theatre presentation of Ducati’s 2012 models also gave Gabriele Del Torchio, President of Ducati Motor Holding, the opportunity to announce the positive business performance of the Bolognabased company. In a market challenged by economy difficulties, Ducati has continued to increase its market share, production volumes and global sales, confirming their solid position and underlining the efficient and well organized business structure that will now serve the company in the coming years. “It is the hard work of all the men and women at Ducati that has resulted in the positive results that I present today and it validates the strategy we followed during the period 2007-2011,” said Gabriele Del Torchio during the conference. “Thanks to our focus on product development, increased investment and our work to maintain the desirability of our brand around the world, I take great satisfaction in announcing that 2011 has been the most successful year in the history of Ducati. “Sales of approximately 42,000 motorcycles have generated revenues of €480m, a 20% increase over the previous year and just reward for our highly innovative products. It gives us the confidence to believe in the pillars of our strategy and to continue on our ‘mission’ to be specialist leaders of the sport bike segment by further developing innovative and class-leading motorcycles. “All of this has enabled us to present the incredible new 1199 Panigale, the new benchmark in the sport bike arena. Without doubt, this has been the most ambitious project in Ducati’s history and underlines our engineering excellence and ‘product emotion’, an aspect of our brand which, in such a competitive market place, has become more important than ever. This motorcycle represents pure Italian style, the reference point for performance and a safety-enhanced, confidence-inspiring experience for our customers on road and track. “We are particularly proud to have created a special ‘Tricolore’ version of this new motorcycle, in the red, white and green of Italy. What better occasion to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our national flag and underline our role and responsibility as ambassadors of the title ‘made in Italy’, than with a product of such style and technical excellence.”

Following Mr.Del Torchio’s announcement, Ducati Motor Holding General Manager, Claudio Domenicali, proceeded to release the details of the 2012 models with particular focus on the 1199 Panigale. “Throughout our long and successful twin-cylinder history of racing, Ducati has never built a sportbike as advanced as the 1199 Panigale,” said Claudio Domenicali during his presentation. “We are moving into a new generation with a ‘revolution’ of the species that establishes new limits for the category. Its Desmodromic heart, the new Superquadro engine, is the most powerful twin-cylinder ever produced and represents the base of a new concept of frame and engine integration. This concept enables the 1199 Panigale a dry weight of just 164kg and gives it a riding sensation that is closer than ever to a full race bike. With revised ergonomics, full Rideby-Wire engine management and enhanced systems of ABS and traction control, we have controlled the beast within the 1199 Panigale so that the full emotion of this motorcycle can bbe enjoyed easily and safely.” Indeed, the 2012 Ducati Superbike family marks the official introduction of the ground-breaking 1199 Panigale, 1199 Panigale S and flagship 1199 Panigale S Tricolore and opens a new chapter in the company’s iconic Superbike history. ADVICE
Ask her... How do I win my girlfriend's brother over?
How can I tell if she loves me or just loves the attention?
Don't underestimate the power of saying little. As the quiet-but-polite guy who laughs at everyone's jokes but isn't trying too hard, there's no way you could come across as a loser, a wuss or a jerk. As for winning him over, turn that idea upside down: Hold back your approval, and he'll feel compelled to make the friendly, let's-grab-a-beer overtures.
What has she done for you lately? When a woman is falling for a guy, she can hardly stop herself from baking his favorite desserts or reading up on the topics he never stops talking about. No matter how busy she may be, the urge to please the object of her affection takes over. If this girl soaks up your time and energy but isn't giving much back, she probably isn't smitten.
Do women really care what we wear in bed? Wear whatever you want (pj's, a ribbed tank, a sarong) as long as it's spotlessly clean. But never underestimate the sexiness of a soft, laundryfresh cotton T-shirt paired with boxer briefs.

How can I make my wife mad with lust? You have to get her excited for real: her blood pumping, her adrenaline flowing, her thighs tingling. Find a sport you can play against each
other, such as racquetball or tennis, and let the sweating, trash talking and score keeping commence. If competition isn't an option, try fear. Dare her to try something new and slightly dangerous, such as scuba diving or zip-lining. Or just take her to a horror movie that'll make her jump out of her skin. All the above will make her feel alive, exhilarated and hungry for more stimulation. That's the stuff lust is made of.
If your boyfriend kissed a girl in a bar, would you want to know? No. But thanks a heap for making me picture it.

2012 GINETTA G60
2012 FIAT 500 ABARTH
In the last six years Ginetta Boss Lawrence Tomlinson has taken the British marque from a nostalgic relic of the 60’s - 70’s and turned it into what is today a formidable player in on the British motorsport scene. Himself an accomplished racing driver with an impressive engineering background Lawrence is gifted with a striking ability to ‘do it right’. Few are better placed to fully understand the purist love of driving and his very tough, very high standards are all evident in Ginetta’s new sports car, the G60.
Faithful to the “small but wicked” saying coined for Karl Abarth’s cars in the 1960s, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth arrives to America with the racing traditions that have made it a success on European roadways and racetracks — world-class performance and precision, purposeful and aggressive styling, high power-to-weight ratio and limited-production volume.
The G60 is rare by any standards - with plans for only 50 to be produced each year for global distribution. But rarer still is a modern car company who have purposely engineered-out any and all superfluous electronic gadgetry. The carbon fibre G60 is built by the same impassioned team who build our world beating race cars, indeed it shares the same 3.7 litre cyclone engine as its 185mph GT3 racing stable mate. Selfish and unremitting in the pursuit of the perfect driving experience the standard of the race-tech engineering speaks for itself;delivering in spadesthe natural and very real sense of handling and performance any red-blooded driving enthusiast craves, strike that…needs.
“Bringing the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth to the U.S. enables us to reach out to driving enthusiasts who want Italian performance at an attainable price,” said Olivier Francois, Head of FIAT Brand and Chief Marketing Officer — Chrysler Group LLC. “With its lightweight, track-tuned handling and purpose-built design, the Fiat 500 Abarth brings to life the legendary racing heritage of the brand and becomes the Italian high-performance car for everyday driving.” Building on the excitement of the new 2012 Fiat 500 (Cinquecento), the new Fiat 500 Abarth is designed for track-day enthusiasts and driving purists who want the ultimate high-performance small car with the pedigree of an exclusive Italian exotic. With its all-new 1.4-liter MultiAir® Turbo engine, Abarth-tuned suspension and brake systems, race-inspired design, and technology features not traditionally included on a small car, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth unleashes the brand’s legendary performance heritage to American streets. Like the European model, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth is designed, engineered and tested to deliver the high-performance driving and enduring capabilities needed for track use. And to make sure the 500 Abarth provides the highest levels of driving thrill, every piece of hardware and every mile of development tuning has been thoroughly examined to ensure the European model’s DNA is delivered to North American driving enthusiasts. “The new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth is more than the addition of power and worldclass technology, it’s designed, developed and tuned to deliver the responsiveness, control and precision a performance driver wants and expects,” said Joe Grace, Vehicle Line Executive, Fiat 500 Abarth. “And for our owners who plan on testing the car’s high-performance capabilities and limits, we have continued to develop from the proven European models to ensure the new 500 Abarth endures on the track.”

» 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Boss Laguna Seca has new Sterling Gray accents and will be available in vintage School Bus Yellow and black paint offerings, complemented by hockey stick stripes and gray interior rear cross-brace. Gray also sets off the front grille, mirror caps and rear pedestal spoiler, while Laguna Seca rear badging and unique two-tone gray and silver wheels round out the exterior accents. Unlike the previous model, the roof will not feature colored accents. Similar to the redesigned base Mustang lineup, the front end offers a more powerful design with a more prominent grille. A more powerful splitter and functional hood extractors add to that look. Boss Mustang has new signature lighting, with standard HID headlamps and LED-surround taillamps. The 2013 Boss also offers a unique functional design feature in the grille with removable covers where fog lamps would be. For improved cooling on track days, the covers can be easily removed with a screwdriver.
T
Additionally, the rear end features a high-gloss black panel that connects the taillamps. The taillamps deliver a smoked appearance that matches up with the sinister look up front. he Ford Mustang Boss 302 is all about performance, and a nod to heritage comes standard with new paint options and design details for 2013.
A new hockey stick graphic featuring reflective stripes is added to the new Boss, calling back the 1970 Boss 302. 2013 Boss 302 and Boss Laguna Seca models feature new School Bus Yellow paint, honoring Parnelli Jones’ 1970 Trans-Am championship car prepared by Bud Moore.
The new Mustang Boss includes Ford SYNC®, the voice-activated in-car connectivity system, as a standard feature. With the base SYNC package, customers enjoy the core hands-free features and services that have quickly established SYNC as a must-have technology, with more than 76 percent of current SYNC users saying they would recommend the system to others.
“Everything we did for 2013 is consistent with and links directly back to our 1970 heritage. The reflective stripes and hockey stick graphic in particular mean something to Mustang enthusiasts,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “Last year, we proved the car had what it takes to perform, and this year we focused on enhancing its eye-catching looks and celebrating its history.” The reflective stripes on Boss come to life when lights hit them, similar to how they did in 1970 on the Mustang Boss 302. The new stripe follows the classic hockey stick motif by going over the fender and extending down the body panel.

ADVICE
WHY SHE FAKES IT The 7 Reasons Why Women Fake It
Y
ou think she’s happy. She wants to stroke his ego A lot of women simply don’t want to hear a man ask them why they didn’t come. The reality is, for many, it’s not that easy to orgasm, and they don’t need to every time. This isn’t to say a woman isn’t enjoying sex. An orgasm isn’t a requisite for enjoyment. Sometimes she needs a mind-blowing orgasm, and other times, she just wants to be intimate. So rather than have a man keep pounding at her until she’s chafing, it’s just easier to pretend. She is too inhibited and fears losing control If she’s the type that has the perfect hair, the perfect job and the perfect wardrobe, she may well be afraid of losing control by allowing herself to orgasm. Dr. Ava Cadell, sex therapist and author of the upcoming book Sexy Little Book of Oral Pleasure, says, “A lot of women don’t want to be seen as out of control because they think they’ll look ugly or weak or vulnerable.” A woman who is afraid of looking messy, of squirting, having you see her “O” face, looking fat or otherwise doing something “embarrassing” may be unable to let go enough to let herself climax. Fear of pregnancy/STDs If she's terrified of pregnancy or is simply worried about contracting a disease, she could be unable to focus on the task at hand during sex. A woman in this situation is going to need time and a very safe environment if she’s going to feel relaxed enough to allow herself to let go and enjoy sex without fear. And, of course, make sure you always wrap it up! If she knows you take your sexual health seriously, she’ll feel more comfortable. She doesn’t know how to get off Unlike men who have easy access to their penis, women are sometimes equally as perplexed as men when it comes to the female body. Men grow up masturbating at a young age. But many women don’t learn about masturbation until well into their 20s, and even then it’s a complicated situation. Between the G-spot, the clitoris, vibrators, fingers and everything else that’s going on, women often don’t even know how to make

themselves reach orgasm, much less tell someone else how to do it. She feels guilty about sex On the other hand, even if a woman knows what gets her off, she may not know how to share it or may be uncomfortable asking for it. Often, women (and men) are embarrassed about their own fantasies for fear of being perceived as weird, easy, nymphomaniacal or perverted. Depending on how she was raised, her guilt could be really extreme, so she might be uptight about sex overall, or just uncomfortable about receiving and experiencing pleasure. She’s experiencing a lack of stimulation Stimulation can be mental, physical, emotional or sexual, according to Dr. Cadell. If you’re playing her clitoris like Mozart plays the piano, she still may not get off if she’s just not into you. If she’s not feeling it, the only way for her to finish the job is to either fantasize about someone else or fake it. On the other hand, some guys just don’t know what they’re doing. Or they think what they’re doing will work because it made the last woman see God. If only it were that simple. Every woman is different, so what got your ex off is not necessarily going to get your current partner off. She wants to get it over with Between work, kids and/or maintaining a household, many women are just tired and lacking in time. Even though society is becoming increasingly more equal, women still shoulder most of the burden in running a home and caring for others, leaving very little time to care for themselves. Or she may just be pissed off at you or tired or hungry. Dr. Caldell says, “I suggest some kind of escape where you can enter a world of fantasy rather than reality. Believe it or not, watching soft or hardcore porn is therapeutic and sexually arousing to women after a long, arduous day, too.” What you can do to help So what can you do to ensure her full enjoyment? First off, be attentive to what gives her pleasure. If you’re not sure, ask! Women are not robots, so don’t assume that just because you watched Jenna Jameson get off in a porno, your partner will get off with those same moves. If she’s feeling stressed out or super busy, help lighten the load by offering to cook dinner or clean up. For women, having an orgasm has as much to do with physicality as it does with psychology. Let her know that she is gorgeous and you love the way she looks no matter what, and she’s more likely to feel uninhibited. No matter what, do not fall into the trap of thinking you know it all. As Lou Paget, sexpert and author of Orgasms: How to Have Them, Give Them, and Keep Them Coming, says, “Please don't tell a woman all your other girlfriends orgasmed that way. She knows they didn't.”

THE DIET RULE THAT'S A TOTAL MYTH
M
etabolism Myth: Eating six small meals a day will boost metabolism. And things took off from there. Google “six meals a day,” and you’ll see just how many people jumped on that bandwagon. But is there any validity to it? Is eating six small meals a day really
36
DESIREMAGAZINE DECEMBER 2011
a powerful tool for weight loss? Let’s see what the “studies” say, and by studies, I mean let’s actually use some real scientific references. France Bellisle, a specialist in eating behavior, reported in a 2004 issue of the Scandanavian Journal of Nutrition: “The notion [of high meal frequency] has been put into question by the recognition of a high level of dietary underreporting in overweight individuals. In addition, no difference in total daily energy expenditure has been documented as a function of daily meal number. Weight loss is not facilitated by high meal frequency. Snacking in obese subjects is associated with higher energy and fat intake.”
Going back as far as 1993 in the British Journal of Nutrition Wilhelmine Verboeket-van de Venne compared two meals a day versus seven, and found that there was no difference in total energy expenditure or average daily metabolic rate. There you go: no metabolic boost from high meal frequency, determined by studies. But what does this mean for you? I am personally not a fan of the six small meals a day approach because: 1. It’s a pain in the arse. Seriously, who has that kind of time? 2. The meals are too small, and I feel constantly hungry. Instead, I stick to three meals a day with bits of fruit for snacks here and there, usually right before exercise. Although I discourage the six-meal a day plan, I also need to warn you about eating too infrequently. I recommend three or four meals a day because there are dangers associated with eating less. Obese people eat often, so why are they obese? France Bellisle’s research mentioned above also found that “Obese people tend to eat little in the morning and much in the afternoon and evening. In extreme cases, a ‘night-eating syndrome’ is observed.” This is a common theme that obese people skip breakfast. I’m not sure why they do this. Perhaps they believe that if they skip breakfast they think they will take in fewer calories during the day, but the opposite is true. Contrary to what you might have heard or read, eating breakfast does not get your metabolism going in the morning. What eating breakfast does do is help establish a regular meal pattern and keep appetite under control so that you don’t overdo it later in the day. In addition, Astrid Smeets and Margriet Westerterp-Plantenga published research in the 2008 British Journal of Nutrition that compared three meals versus two meals a day and found that those who ate three a day had higher feelings of satiety over a 24-hour period. Conversely, they found that it had no difference on total energy expenditure. Again, there was no metabolic boost from three versus two meals, but it was seen as better for appetite control, which is a critical component of weight loss.
This means obese people are more likely to be high-frequency eaters rather than three-meals-a-day types, and that comment about “no difference in total daily energy expenditure” asserts that a bunch of small meals does not boost metabolism. Additionally, M.A. Taylor and J.S. Garrow from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Kings College in London published an article in the 2001 International Journal of Obesity where they asserted: “When [equal amounts of calories] was given as two meals per day or six meals per day there was found to be no significant difference in total energy expenditure.” Again, we’re not getting a metabolism boost from higher meal frequency.
If you want to eat six small meals a day, it isn’t bad for you, but it requires a lot of planning as well as careful attention to calories to ensure you aren’t eating more in a day than if you were eating fewer meals a day. It sure doesn’t make a difference to your overall metabolism. The point I make here is that you don’t have to eat that frequently if you don’t want to. Just don’t eat too infrequently. To conclude: It's about calories, not frequency. My final word on metabolism is this: Stick to the basics. If weight loss is your goal, figure out how many calories you are burning at rest and also via exercise, then adapt your caloric intake accordingly to generate a consistent caloric deficit. Forget about so-called miracle methods for boosting metabolism because they don’t exist. The good news is that this makes things much less complicated for you. The formula for success is: Work your arse off at weightlifting (or some other resistance exercise), get lots of intense aerobic training and eat a healthy and calorie-restricted diet. Do that consistently, and you’ll get there. Metabolism be damned. www.desiremagazineonline.com

ADVICE
BIG PENISES IS THERE SUCH A THING AS TOO BIG?
W
hen it comes to the world of penises, it’s a commonly held belief that bigger is better. Most of the time it is. What woman doesn’t love the added friction of a big penis? But even the most dedicated of size queens may find that sometimes a too-large penis can be more than a mouthful -- literally. I once met a man who was so well endowed that the first time we had sex he punctured me. We awoke to find blood stains all over the bed the next morning, and, for once, it wasn’t because I was riding the crimson wave. Nope, it was just because his dick was abnormally big. As the day went on, I continued to bleed causing me to worry if this was normal. The last thing I needed was an infection below the belt. So I called up a doctor friend to ask for advice. His counsel? Lay off having sex for a few days. You would think he’d know me better than that. Clearly that wasn’t an option. Big Penises And Anal Sex: A Deadly Combination Undeterred, I continued to have sex with the Anaconda, as I call him, and as a result continued to bleed here and there. It was all fine and dandy until one day he thought it would be a great idea to spring anal sex on me. In most circumstances, I’m a big fan of surprises. But “Surprise! My dick is in your ass!” is not one of them. I screamed in pain and told him in no uncertain terms to get the hell off of me. It didn’t get any better when it came to oral sex. The first time I went downtown, I could barely fit it in my mouth, causing me to accidentally graze his member with my teeth. After a little practice, I finally got it under control, but easy it was not. Still, his larger-than-life penis was not
38
DESIREMAGAZINE DECEMBER 2011
as bad as some of the others my friends have encountered. Some of my girlfriends have experienced penises so enormous they could only allow half of it inside before yelping in pain. It’s like going to a buffet and being unable to eat. So what’s a guy to do when he has a big penis? Alas, unlike boobs, there is no way to make it smaller or larger (although I sure wish there was). How To Have Sex With A Big Penis 1. Use lots of lube: Even if the woman in question is normally pretty moist, lubricants will be her best friend in this situation, since lube will lessen the friction. You can use lube in foreplay, having her rub your member with the slippery stuff. Avoid oil-based lubricants because they cause yeast infections. Instead, stick to water- or silicone-based lubes, which can also be used with condoms. 2. Avoid anal and doggy style: The anal canal is not as elastic as the vagina. A vagina is meant to have objects go in (penises) and out (babies), so it’s more prepared to expand. The anal canal, however, is designed for no such activity. It’s not impossible, but anal sex with a larger-than-average penis is going to cause most women outright pain if not extreme discomfort. The doggy-style position allows for extra-deep penetration, so it's a better bet for men on the smaller side. A guy with a big penis may very well injure a woman in this position. 3. Stick to missionary, woman on top or sideways: The classic missionary keeps you from thrusting too deep into your lady. Even though it’s knocked for being boring, it’s a win-win proposition for both parties in this circumstance. With the woman on top position, she can control how far she allows you inside her and you’ll get a full view of her hot bod. Having sex sideways is perfect for bigger penises since neither one of you will be able to fully thrust. The limited range of motion is still pretty sexy, as you’ll be able to make out at the same time.

CAPRICORN: DECEMBER 22- JAN 19
Physical thrills and excitement have a strong appeal for you now, and you want to do something new and out of the ordinary. You also have a lot of energy and quick reflexes. A vigorous game of racquetball or tennis or some other fastmoving competitive sport would be a good outlet for you now. Acting on your spontaneous impulses and following through on some of your more unusual or "crazy" desires will yield surprises, mostly positive.
especially important to you right now. Also, you want to share whatever good fortune you have. You need company and happy fellowship. It's a good time for a party, as long as you don't overdo it. Opportunities for friendship, pleasant associations, and enjoyable social interactions occur now. Personal relationships are harmonious and rewarding. Also, financial transactions go smoothly for you and material benefits are possible at this time.
AQUARIUS: JAN 20- FEB 18 Emotional well-being and contentment characterize this time period. You feel quite relaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation. Laziness, self-indulgence, and expecting everything to work out well with no effort on your part are negative possibilities now. You feel very lucky and you are likely to be lax or extravagant with your money. Material benefits are, indeed, likely at this time, but beware of being overly generous or depending too much on Lady Luck.
LEO: JULY 23- AUGUST 23 Your thoughts turn to love and this is a favorable time to bring out any concerns you have in your personal relationships. Agreements and cooperation can be achieved easily now. You readily discuss your personal needs and desires. Also, you are more aware of beauty and may want to rearrange your decor or buy something to beautify your surroundings.
PISCES: FEBRUARY 19- MARCH 20 What occurs now makes you more aware of what you need, feel, and want in your relationships. If you are unhappy in your personal life, this is brought out now, and you'll need to face what is causing your dissatisfaction. Differences in personal style, tastes, and ways of expressing affection may emerge. You also feel amorous and loving and, if your personal life is going well, this is a time to really enjoy and appreciate it. ARIES: MARCH 21-APRIL 20 Recognition or support from your superiors or others who are in a position to assist you is likely now, especially if you take some initiative. A fast pace, with many letters, phone calls, errands, meetings or discussions, is on the agenda. You may feel mentally restless, impatient and overly eager to get your own ideas across. Also, a situation may arise which requires you to say what is on your mind, to make a decision or to clearly voice your personal opinion on some issue. TAURUS: APRIL 21-MAY 20 You are more sympathetic and understanding of others now. You are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and you are not as pushy as usual. Even if you are normally very understanding and tolerant of other people's foibles, you are able to reach a better rapport with others and be less resistant and defensive when others disagree with you or act in ways that are not agreeable with you. This is an excellent time to openly talk with anyone that you do not feel comfortable with and do not have a good rapport with. You can break down barriers with others now. GEMINI: MAY 21- JUNE 21 Your imagination is vivid and you are able to find picturesque words and images to convey your thoughts. This is an excellent time for creative writing. It is also a good time for receiving counseling or consultation for issues of personal concern. This is also a good time for any work of an artistic kind because your imagination and sensitivity are high. Philosophical, spiritual, psychic and religious topics also appeal to you now, and you can become much clearer about philosophical issues and matters of a very broad, encompassing nature now. CANCER: JUNE 22- JULY 22 Fortunate circumstances assist you in your career. This is a time when it is difficult to stay within a budget or on a diet, as your tendency is to splurge on beautiful things and to enjoy yourself as much as possible. You want comfort and ease and have luxurious tastes. Quality is

This is a favorable time for getting your message across to others via writing, speaking or advertising. Doors open and new opportunities for personal and professional growth present themselves. Any initiative or action you feel inclined to take at this time is likely to lead to a positive outcome for you. Partnerships or joining with others for mutual benefit is favored. Your energy level is high; this is a good time for athletics, especially team sports. LIBRA: SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23 You are likely to distance yourself from others now, feeling the need to withdraw and reflect. Your thoughts are inclined to be heavy, critical and pessimistic at this time, so it would be good to realize that you are only seeing part of the picture and perhaps seek the advice of an older, experienced person who has passed through some of the challenges you face. This can also be a time of leaving, separating from friends, and choosing a new way. SCORPIO: OCTOBER 23- NOVEMBER 21 You will need to let old and outworn beliefs and commitments that no longer serve a purpose die away, and you will need to persevere with the things that you want to continue. If you are willing to do this, the changes that occur now will be very beneficial to you, and you will later look back at this time as one that forced you to trim the fat from your life and make changes that enabled you to mature and grow in ways that you cannot foresee at this time. SAGITTARIUS: NOVEMBER 23 - DEC 21 Your concentration is excellent now and you are serious about your work. You want to focus on real accomplishment and avoid frivolity and distractions. You may fruitfully tackle difficult, disagreeable tasks or work that usually frustrates you, for your patience and ability to do painstaking work is brought out now. Self-control and self-discipline are required of you at this time but, fortunately, they yield positive results in the long run. Confidence and inner harmony prevail. You can move forward with creative projects and express yourself more easily and comfortably now. Your efforts are well received at this time.

TOP 10: ROMANTIC CHRISTMAS GIFTS No. 5 Tickets This gift is not about tickets for you (that means no Rage Against the Machine or Larry the Cable Guy), it’s about tickets for her. Yes, that means sitting through three hours of men in tights if she loves the ballet. Often better than a wrapped present, a shared experience like a concert, opera, play or holiday show brings you closer together. And don’t forget to save the ticket stub for No. 3. No. 4 Antique Picture Frame Antique stores are full of romantic artifacts, from decorative mirrors to classic vases. Most women love old-fashioned finds, but to personalize it, give her a photo of the two of you in an old-fashioned frame. The fact that it’s antique automatically imbues it with amore. And best of all, you can search for this gift from your living room, just surf eBay’s “Antiques” section.
D
espite what you may think, a woman’s idea of romance isn’t a kitchen appliance (too 1950s) a bottle of perfume (too cliche) or roses (too generic). No. 10 Membership to an "... of the Month" Club This is truly the gift that keeps on giving, and it’s a monthly reminder of your love for her. Not only will you get points for romance, you’ll get points for originality and thoughtfulness, especially if you tailor it to her tastes. If she’s a chocoholic, go with a chocolate of the month club. If she’s a wine snob, go with wine of the month. And it doesn’t stop there, "of the month" clubs also center around cheese, coffee, candles, flowers, fruit and movies- just log onto AmazingClubs.com and browse until you find the perfect match. No. 9 Cashmere Sweater This isn’t just any sweater, it’s a cashmere sweater: A luxuriously soft and pricey piece of clothing that’s a true classic. Yes, it’s functional, but since it can be worn for life, it’s also a keepsake. Not all women love all sweater styles, so avoid trendy cuts in loud colors, and stick to classic cardigans or V-necks in black, brown, cream or navy.

DESIREMAGAZINE DECEMBER 2011
No. 8 Lingerie Not all lingerie is romantic; something like, say, crotchless panties, garter belts or anything that could be seen as more of a gift for you sucks the romance right out of it. When it comes to this gift, think sensuous, not slutty. Stick with silk, satin and lace robes, camis, baby dolls, slip dresses, bras and panties. And remember that part of feeling sexy is feeling comfortable -- if something is too snug or falling off, it defeats the purpose. So if you don’t know her size, include the gift receipt so that she can exchange it. No. 7 Old Book, Something Inscribed Books can be thoughtful and personal, but inscriptions take them to a whole new level of romance. Buy her a new novel that she’s been dying to read, a first addition of her all-time favorite classic or even a journal, the subject matter doesn’t have to be romantic, but your inscription does. This is the time to tap into your sentimental side. Of course, if all else fails, you could always quote a love sonnet. No. 6 Engraved iPod, Something Engraved Although an iPod on its own isn't romantic, there is an easy way to elevate even the simplest gift into the ultimate romantic token: engrave it! By forever branding a bracelet, cell phone or even a key chain with your love seal, with your initials, anniversary date or a sappy sentiment, you’re sending her the message that you’re in it for the long haul -- and nothing is more romantic than commitment.
No. 3 Scrapbook Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting that you cut and paste pictures into a scrapbook a la Martha Stewart, but there are, ahem, less feminine ways of preserving memories thanks to technology. Internet sites like Scrapo.com, Picaboo.com and Shutterfly.com let you create scrapbooks with the click of a mouse; just drag and drop photos, then add your own poetic sentiments and you’re done. Granted, it’s a tad cheesy, but it’s about as close to a homemade gift as you can get -- and what’s more romantic than telling the story of your romance? For bonus points, throw in a ticket stub from your first movie or concert. No. 2 A Weekend Getaway Women love surprises and women love weekend getaways. This year, pair ’em up and you have a recipe for romance. Once you reach your lover’s locale -- whether it’s Napa Valley wine country, the Big Apple or even a nearby bed and breakfast -- keep the romantic theme going by taking her on a carriage ride, ordering room service for two and watching the sunset together. No. 1 Jewelry All women love jewelry, but not all women love all jewelry. If she doesn’t have her ears pierced, steer clear of earrings. If her style is simple and understated, bling isn’t your best bet. If she doesn’t wear a watch, don’t waste your money on one. The best thing you can do is look and listen to what she likes. That said, buying jewelry doesn’t have to be intimidating; there are a few tried, tested and true trinkets, like Zales' Journey Diamond Squiggle Pendant in 10K white gold, that are sure to make her swoon.

MEN RAPED BY WOMEN CAN A MAN BE RAPED?
T
he headline jumped out at me from CNN.com, and I clicked through fast: “3 Women in Zimbabwe Charged in Series of Sex Attacks on Men.”
My impulse to click was exactly the reaction CNN’s web team had targeted. But I read the article for a reason other than sexual curiosity. It was more a medical question: Can a woman really rape a man? What if he ejaculates? Is this rape? The news story was this: Three women in their 20s were charged with raping 17 men in Zimbabwe and keeping their sperm in condoms for some sort of health-related ritual. (That logic is reason enough for the world to step up efforts to educate girls.) The young women apparently used drugs and raped the men at gunpoint. In regard to men raped by women, this is where the medical question popped into my head: Can Men Come In A Stressful Situation? We all know that a woman can certainly be raped while drugged and full of terror, but a man, well, a man has to sort of function to complete the task. But can he function on drugs or at gunpoint? I know men who can’t even pee if someone is watching. Not convinced that a Google search would yield

Some dismissed the whole notion that this was a rape. “Unless you are a straight man with dudes forcing sex on you, you can’t be raped,” said one. “You can’t rape the willing,” said another. More than a couple said they couldn’t comment because they were busy booking a ticket to Africa. So, I brought up the drug and gunpoint thing again. Was ejaculation possible under such circumstances? The answers were mixed. “If you’re scared and drugged, you're not going to orgasm.” “I don't agree. If a man is stimulated, he would ejaculate regardless of ‘willing’ or not.” “It's not uncommon, since men produce sperm when intoxicated.” Then came a true voice of wisdom. One of my Facebook friends teaches at a medical school
and tells me this very question is sometimes on medical board exams. So here’s how the professor weighed in: “Ejaculation is a spinal level reflex; it can happen. I have seen it happen in people having seizures or read documented evidence that it happens during hanging too. It's even a question asked on med boards often enough whether a tetraplegic can ejaculate. It's my understanding that as long as the sympathetic nervous arc is intact, one can come. For erection it's a parasympathetic one, and it's influenced by the higher centers, i.e. erotic thoughts, etc.” Thanks, Doc. In household language, he’s basically saying that an erection isn’t necessary to produce sperm. Got it. Of course, the much more important question here isn’t medical; it’s criminal. Can a woman rape a man? Yes. If someone does not agree to have sex with another and a sexual act is forced upon them, that is called rape. And it is clearly illegal, hopefully as much in Africa as in North America.
DESIRE FOOD REVIEW REVIEW BY: KAB
TAPAS: A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY.
T
here is something truly magical about meals that bring the simplest ingredients to another level of existence. European food in general has a rather elegant fiancé about the process usually focusing on the lowliest of creatures (snails anyone?) and bringing out the inner beauty. Perhaps the most amazing talent comes from tapas. Tapas are a traditional Spanish affair that, as the name suggest, involves eating small meals. Typically this involves various restaurants throughout a specific area of the city. The Spaniard version is far more impromptu on the customer’s end, where the local spots are always prepared for an influx of grazers coming and going. The meals and alcohol that accompanies each meal are small enough that you can stay hungry and mildly tipsy into wee hours of the night. One must always remember to be conservative when doing a tapas run. The delicious little morsels will have you wanting at least 10 more, but if you stand any chance of making it through the entire list you must eat sparingly. It’s a mad hazy dash from high class restaurant to another but every second is a blast.
Sadly, this sort of event only comes to Tampa on rare occasions and even then tends to be a shell of the event it’s imitating. Nevertheless, tapas have found a thriving market in the mainstream restaurant community. Only a few years back the concept of tapas was something of an oddity but now every corner of town has at least one hip tapas bar. The fad has gotten so popular its even spilled into the chain restaurant world. I find the later a bit troubling for it seems the tradition has simply turned into a means of making less food for more money when it should really be about making small meals with huge flavor. Now before I go on a rant about chain food destroying the American culinary culture, I’ll move on to the positive results of this tapas bar overload. As I mentioned, tapas originate from Europe, and in particular, Spain. It makes it rather appropriate that the restaurant Spain is called Spain. The restaurant is a chic building in the heart of the food district of downtown Tampa. It’s a rather easy place to spot with its clean white paint and bold red tapestries, giving it very distinct euro-sophisticated vibe (euroisticated?) The interior has the exact
same feeling. The clean geometric layout, carefully color coordinated décor, and ridiculously red lights makes it feel more like an art studio than a restaurant. Upon further investigation, I was told the design was meant to embody a mix of modern Spanish décor as well as look artistic (it’s a commentary of the food…fancy!). What attracted me most to Spain was the history of its owners. The Castro family that bought and created Spain were immigrants from Spain (let me know if I’ve hit my quotas for "Spain's" said in a single sentence). The tapas they prepare are a representative selection of their home-the northwestern region of Spain (known as Galicia). This is quite possibly one of the best locations for seafood in the world (second maybe only to Basque…which also happens to be in Spain). The recipes for their tapas are proclaimed to be traditional tapas recipes that have been passed from one generation to the next, and are commonly served in Galician. I started my meal as any right minded person should start any tapas meal- with tons of sangria. The sangria served at Spain does not have the most stand-out flavor, but I would argue that’s the point. The wine is simply meant to carry you from tapas to tapas as a sort of alcoholic pallet cleanser. While I was enjoying the first round of sangria, I also had the pleasure of listening to flamenco guitar music. This plays every weekend and is also accompanied by flamenco dancing. The lively music is just the right way to start a Saturday night. The food itself was phenomenal with each dish providing small bits full of large flavors. The seafood preparation is particularly worth noting. Quite often scallops and mussels are poorly cooked, leaving them quite rubbery. Spain's chefs managed to create incredibly tender scallops and mussels (in the case of the later, possibly the best I have ever had). The sauces for each dish were a meal of their own, making an excellent compliment to the overall order. The pimientos del piquillo was another enjoyable dish, offering a nice fresh taste of crab with just the perfect level of heat. The rice prepared for the paella was a bit flat, but the seafood complimenting the dish was delightful. The desserts didn’t really spark my imagination as I would hope, but the flan and filloas gallegas (crepes stuffed with cream and covered in Grand Marnier liquor) still were a very nice way to end an overall satisfying meal. The restaurant successfully created incredibly unique and delicious meals out of the most basic of ingredients. When you look at the dishes in Spain, you know exactly everything in them and yet you have no idea how it could taste as amazing as it does. Spain not only serves a good meal, but truly embodies the overall heart and soul of the tapas tradition.

TIPS Buying A House Now: The Cons Blinded by a bargain: Don’t be hasty just because the asking price is low. After the cost of the place, two of the most important things home buyers need to pay attention to are condition and location. If the house is in a bad neighborhood or needs extensive repairs, then it isn’t such a good deal. Also, don’t buy a house just because it’s cheap; buy a house because you want to live in it. Real-estate analysts say you should be planning to live in your new house for three to five years, at least. Don’t rely on renting --you may not be able to find anyone to pay what you’re asking. “If you’re going to buy, buy a place to hold onto,” Hale recommends. This is a longterm investment, not something to flip in a month. Remember that other buyers are also looking for a cheap deal, so you may not sell it for much more than you paid for it.
RIGHT TIME TO BUY A HOUSE How To Know When You Should Buy A House
T
wo years ago realtors said, “Now is a great time to buy a house.” A year later they said, “Now is a really great time to buy a house.” By now they’re saying, “There will never be a better time to buy a house.” Seems like the opportunity of a lifetime, and you’d be applauded for scraping together every penny of overtime and early inheritance to buy while the market is still in the throes of a recession. Incredibly low interest rates, a huge inventory and homeowners desperate for a quick sale seem to make this a oncein-a-generation opportunity, but with an investment this serious, it’s a good idea to weigh up the pros and cons when determining the right time to buy a house. Is now really the best time to buy for you? This may be one of the most weighty decisions you’ll ever make, and you’ll be living with the consequences for years to come. Here are some of the things you should consider before selling a kidney for that two-story with an indoor garage. Buying A House Now: The Pros Houses are cheap: There are good deals out there and prices are more reasonable than they have been in a long, long time. Reduced spending means that the realestate market is still slow, which equals cheap prices and plenty of room to bargain. Houses are cheap because those who can’t afford them are selling in a hurry and because the banks are selling foreclosed -what they diplomatically call “distressed” -homes. So for those who have been saving and have a secure income, this is a great time to get into the market. Also, there’s
52
DESIREMAGAZINE DECEMBER 2011
less competition: Fewer serious buyers makes it less likely that you’ll find yourself in a bidding war, and you can negotiate more effectively. “This recession means that we absolutely have a buyer’s market,” says Kit Hale, National Association of Realtors Regional Vice President. “In some areas, the average time a house spends on the market is 140 days. In boom time, it was 40. Sellers know that they will have to accept a lower price if they want to attract buyers in a market where there is now a very high level of inventory. It’s as good a buyer's market as this industry’s ever seen.” Renting is expensive: Thanks to foreclosures and fewer existing renters unable to make the eventual decision to buy, demand for rentals in many areas has increased, which makes it the right time to buy a house. Demand for rentals in the past few years has increased, and often the supply hasn’t kept up, as there has been little new construction since the crisis hit, which is pushing up rental prices. So if you felt that renting was like throwing money into a black hole before, renting now makes even less sense when you could be putting the money into a mortgage. Unbeatable interest rates: “Interest rates are historically low,” says Hale. “If you have good credit, then this is an amazing time to get a mortgage.” Banks may be more wary about lending due to the origins of the financial crisis, but qualifying for a mortgage, although much more stringent now than it was before, is only likely to get harder.
Unstable income: Unemployment is still rampant, and experts say that many of us, if we haven’t been laid off already, are still very much in danger of being let go. If you’re buying a home during the crisis, getting a good price is just as important as being able to hold and ride out the housing recession. You may have to wait 5 to 10 years before the real estate market has completely recovered from this housing slump, and losing your job in the meantime is a very real possibility. Credit squeeze: It’s now much harder to get a mortgage from the bank if your credit background isn’t squeaky clean. New, more prudent lending standards mean that most would-be home buyers will now need solid credit, a decent down payment and documented income verification. Things may get worse: This means that housing prices may look even better in the future. Although some predict that the economy is finally turning around, we’re not out of the woods yet. The great depression of 1929 may seem very far away, but our economy shares many of the same characteristics. This crisis is not going anywhere quickly. If you’re a gambling man, you might be rewarded by waiting to see if prices slide even further. It’s complicated: Many of the best bargains are on foreclosed properties, but these kinds of sales are often more complex than they seem, and sellers have rights when in foreclosure. On top of that, some of these homes are not officially foreclosed. Many owners will sell before the notice of default is finalized, which means that the new buyer will need to pull the place out of foreclosure. This sometimes involves making up back payments to the lender, paying fees that have been imposed on the property and paying off the original loan.
