Chapter One
Caitlyn Chase sighed with pleasure as she basked under the hot summer sun. She’d paid Cape May’s extortion fee for a beach pass. She’d spent an eternity searching for a somewhat isolated spot far away from screeching children kicking sand. And after enduring a plethora of wolf whistles and catcalls from the group playing volleyball several yards away, she’d finally found Nirvana in simple sand and surf. Settling onto her towel, she soaked away her cares in the familiarity of the beach where she’d spent so many summers alongside her family. Though her parents and brother had been gone for more than a decade now, she could almost hear them calling out to her as she lay on the sand listening to the waves. “Need me to do your front?” A deep, masculine voice shook her from her musings. She blinked up into a leering and malevolent face. Hard, calculating, dark eyes stared over her figure, making her want to shy away. He looked like a brick, his thick arms bulging as he crossed them over a massive chest. Even dressed in a tank top and shorts with short, blond hair styled to look carefree, he appeared a thug. “Maybe she wants a softer hand,” another man spoke, sandwiching her between him and his friend. “Back up, Vincent, and let me handle her.” This one was taller and leaner, but 2 Marie Harte no less dangerous. Handle her? She sensed in him a keen ability to manipulate those around him. He dressed like his friend, but unlike Vincent, he fit his clothes. Dark hair framed a face almost too pretty to be a man’s, and his gray eyes glittered
with an intensity she found disturbing. As her mind struggled to catch up to her instinctive reaction to both men, they quickly knelt on either side of her and pinned her shoulders, effectively holding her in place while smiling down at her, giving the appearance they were all old friends. “We can do this the easy way,” the tall one said, brushing his knuckles along the swell of one breast. “Or the hard way,” Vincent growled, his grip on her arm bruising. “Don’t bother asking any of the assholes on the beach for help. I’ll hurt anyone who comes along.” He grinned. “Don’t let me scare you, though. Come on, honey, something tells me you’re a fighter. Make a break for it and run.” Caitlyn’s heart raced. “I don’t understand.” “Sure you do, sweetheart,” the tall one said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “We’re with the PPA.” “PPA?” “And you haven’t been licensed. You’re coming in for a tag,” Vincent added. “A tag?” She stared down at the beach tag pinned to her bikini bottom. “I just paid eight bucks for that!” PPA, what was PPA? “What is this about? And Vincent, ease up on my arm.” Visions of lawsuits and jail time flashed through her mind. “You’re going to be very sorry if you don’t let go.” Instead of releasing her, he leaned down and focused on her
mouth. “Why? You going to bite me if I don’t?” Bite him? What the hell was he talking about? She might be a walking hormone, but she wasn’t into the rough stuff. His close proximity, however, was making her dizzy, a sad fact that reminded her of the worries she’d come to the beach to forget, if only for a little while. “You’re making me sick.” She felt nauseated and closed her eyes, fighting for control. Opening them, she stared at the taller man, who seemed to be in charge. “I’m not well.” “No, you’re a freak, one we need to ‘examine.’” Vincent sneered. “Hell, breed ’em and bag ’em, I say. Right, Simon?” Simon frowned. “I don’t think she’s pretending. Look at her pupils.” Vincent leaned closer, and she visibly recoiled. His smell was worse than anything she’d ever experienced. Like rotten garbage and raw sewage -- evil personified. “Come with us, Caitlyn. We’ll help you feel much better.” Simon stroked her cheek with a rough hand. His touch felt like slime, and she had to force herself to remain still beneath him. Breathing deeply, she nodded and sat up with their help. “Nice tits,” Vincent murmured as he stared down her bathing suit. She flushed, thinking her decision for maximum tan couldn’t have come at a worse time. The brown bikini was tame compared to that of most of the women lying on the beach, but under her captors’ stares, she felt almost naked.
“You do have a lovely figure,” Simon appraised, his eyes roving her curves with a snakelike charm. “You know, Vincent, there’s nothing saying we have to take her in right away.” He lifted her chin to meet his gaze. “Maybe Caitlyn would rather we forget we ever saw her. Maybe she’d like the chance to persuade us to lose her for a while?” She hurriedly nodded, relieved beyond measure when he and Vincent released her arms. She rubbed where Vincent had touched her but kept her eyes down as she gathered her things. A plan firmed in her mind, distasteful though it was. Caitlyn taunted them as she wriggled into her clothing. She slowly stepped into her jean cutoffs and donned a loose, long-sleeved, white cotton shirt. Hoping she still had the ability she hadn’t used in years, 4 Marie Harte Caitlyn crouched to draw her tennis shoes on and released the natural pheromone abundant in her system. Thank God, it worked. Simon inhaled sharply, and Vincent muttered a crude description of her impending future. She continued to exude chemical attractant, inwardly grimacing at the headache that accompanied her unique talent. She walked, waiting patiently while they escorted her off the beach, away from the multitude of sun worshippers toward hotel row. Beyond the paved boardwalk, she noted a dark SUV parked by itself and knew that’s where they headed. Once inside that vehicle, she’d find herself in real trouble. Bastards. Rape and torture at Vincent’s hands, and who the hell knew what Mr. Suave beside her thought about. Despite Vincent’s rough treatment, something about Simon warned her he’d be the worse of the two. As she trudged through the sand, Caitlyn shut her mind to the
million questions about who they were and how they’d found her, or for that matter, why they wanted her. She could only assume they were somehow connected to Pearson Labs, the only people who’d ever shown an intense interest in her. After a lifetime of tests and study, she’d left the lab three years ago, at their request. So why track her down now? Then again, maybe these two weren’t with the lab. She frowned. But they knew her name. No doubt, they also knew where she was staying. Adrenaline spiked, and she forced herself to appear docile, a lamb being led to slaughter. Vincent ran his hand over her ass, and she was forced to listen to what he intended to do to her as he whispered threats in her ear. The stairway off the beach neared. She counted the steps as they climbed, pulling back when her feet hit the paved boardwalk. Only fifty feet to the SUV. What to do, what to do? “Grab her,” Simon ordered. “I’m sure she’ll try for a shot at freedom. They all do.” They all do? Thinking quickly, she went with her gut and stopped. “You know, I still don’t know what PPA is, but that doesn’t mean I’m against getting friendly with a few handsome men.” She blinked up at Vincent and licked her lips, pleased when his eyes fairly glazed over. “Ignore it, Vincent.” Simon’s voice was sharp. She turned to him and smiled. “Simon,” she whispered and drew him toward her, aware he seemed to have softened. “Come on, baby. Don’t you want me?” She leaned closer and brought his head to hers, nuzzling his cheek. The pain in her head intensified until she thought her head would explode, but
when he groaned, she eased up on the pheromone and chuckled. “That’s what I thought.” Glancing down, she noted the firm erection straining his trousers. A look at Vincent showed him similarly fixed. Okay, I’ve got them hooked. Now what? She’d never before employed her sensuality as a weapon. Though she didn’t intend to follow through with anything, she unfortunately had no idea how to extricate herself from the lust building in both men. A sudden accident turned all three toward the street, where two men argued over smashed fenders. “You asshole!” “Look in the mirror, pal. You ran a red light! Look at all this damage.” “It was yellow, and if you weren’t so busy staring at the eye candy,” the smaller man paused, nodding in her direction, “instead of the road, you would have seen me turning.” She hoped she hadn’t caused the accident and took a guilty step back, one that had both her kidnappers snapping their attention to her again. Drawing a deep breath, she sent them a sly grin. “I can’t wait. Let’s do it in the truck.” Vincent nodded and strode to the SUV without looking back. Simon paused a moment, as if struggling. “Open the door for me, Simon,” she said, pouting, and blew him a kiss, one ripe with invitation. “I’ll make it worth your while.” Glancing beyond him, she noted Vincent at the vehicle fumbling
with his keys. She just had to get rid of Simon, at least enough to run into the crowd on the other side of Beach Avenue. There she had no doubt she’d find a cop. They were everywhere down here in the summer. Simon nodded hesitantly. “Okay, but I’m first. You’ll do whatever I want, no matter how much it hurts.” His gray eyes gleamed. She nodded encouragingly, and he pushed her toward the vehicle. The moment she was more than an arm’s length away she bolted. Dimly aware of her name being shouted, she ignored everything but the driving need to escape. From deep within her pooled a source of speed and strength she’d never felt before. Months of weakness and dizziness vanished, as if they’d never been. Caitlyn ran right off the boardwalk, landing five feet below on the street as if she’d skirted a small crack in the ground. She felt fine, not breathless but full of energy. Not questioning her newfound strength, she ignored the sudden sting in her shoulder and prayed she could make it to safety. Spotting a break in the heavy beach traffic, she darted between cars, running away from the water along Decatur, searching for police. Not seeing any, she raced toward the Washington Square Mall. The outdoor shopping plaza would provide decent camouflage until she could find a ride and ditch the beach. She ran through a small, metered parking lot to a narrow alley between stores and stopped to catch her breath, not surprised at the migrainelike throbbing that pulsed behind her eyes. Whenever they’d forced her to perform for them in the lab, she’d felt the same tension, the same ache. Yet this one was worse,
and as she touched the sting at her shoulder, she realized part of the pain had been induced by an outside source. Yanking the small dart from her body, she cursed Vincent, Simon, and the fucking PPA, whatever the hell that was. Caitlyn leaned back against the brick wall and tried to control her breathing, but the slow fog in her mind grew. Panic flared, and a scuffling noise to her left forced her to action. Fleeing from the intrusion, she had almost reached the entrance to the heavily trafficked plaza when two men appeared, blocking her access to safety. She quickly turned around, only to find two more men waiting at the mouth of the alley, too far away to be an immediate threat, but close enough not to discount. Caitlyn felt rather than saw the men closest to her near. She jumped back, snarling at them like a wild beast. Scared at the changes in herself, as much as the threat surrounding her, she spotted the nearest avenue of escape and focused on the men to her front. Both men were as large, if not larger, than Vincent -- the blackhaired one taller and meaner looking, while the sandy-haired man wore an easygoing expression and held his hands up, as if to show he was harmless. The brief glimpse of the two behind her had affirmed their threatening sizes as well, and she wondered hysterically if there was a Mr. Universe pageant nearby that she’d missed. “Easy,” the most threatening of the bunch growled. Not likely. His brown eyes snapped, his jaw clenched tight, and his biceps flexed as he fisted his hands and began stalking her. “Back off,” she growled back, dismayed to find she had literally
growled, as in, like a dog. “And lose the men behind me, or I’ll tear them limb from limb.” She knew she sounded overly dramatic. But she felt as if she could really hurt them. After the day she’d had, she wouldn’t feel the least bit sorry for any abuse they might suffer at her hands. “Shit. Roane, she’s changing now,” the sandy-haired one in front of her said. “I know, Hale. I’m not blind. What the hell do you want me to do?” “Hold her down,” one of the giants behind her offered. She glanced over her shoulder and bared her teeth, and immediately knew she’d made a huge mistake. The minute her head turned, large hands settled over her. Twisting and flailing, she clawed, bit, and kicked at her attacker. But the acute pain assaulting her body hampered her defenses. Bones popped, and muscles stretched. Her head felt as if it would split in two, and her heart hammered within her chest. She was dimly aware of rough hands cradling her, of others reaching for but not hurting her. The combination of pain and dizziness finally overrode her stubborn resistance, and she passed out cold. *****
“Derrick and Hale, post at the exits. Zack, the blanket.” Zack
nodded, helping Roane wrap the woman up in an overly large blanket. “Ace is waiting with the SUV,” Zack murmured. Moving with a sense of urgency and praying Vincent Hoff and Simon Dunn were the only two assholes the Project’s Protection Agency -- the PPA -- had sent after Caitlyn Chase, Roane hefted Caitlyn in his arms and hurried down the alley toward the parking lot. Derrick held him back a moment, then nodded and shuttled him to the vehicle. Ace had popped open the back hatch and sat waiting behind the wheel, tapping at it nervously. “We need to fly,” he said as Roane gently set the woman down and slammed the hatch shut. “I’ve got cops looking for me from that accident scene on Beach. The other guy is majorly pissed that I smashed his precious Lexus.” Roane waited for Derrick, Zack, and Hale to enter the vehicle before climbing in the front passenger seat. “Slow down, we don’t want to draw attention,” he warned Ace as the man pressed the accelerator. “Talk about your backseat drivers,” Ace mumbled but slowed a fraction. “So what’s the deal with the package?” He looked in his rearview at the back. “She started changing, right there in the alley,” Derrick said with a grin. “Damned if she didn’t do Roane some damage.” “Some,” Roane agreed, suddenly feeling the sting of several deep gouges. “The stubborn woman wouldn’t listen.” “Would you have?” Zack asked with a snort. “She just got mauled by two dickheads from the PPA and has no idea she’s a Circ.”
“And then she had to face you,” Hale added with mock terror. “Hell, I’d have gone for your jugular the minute I laid eyes on your ugly face.” “Can’t argue with that,” Ace agreed and turned onto Washington Street, heading out of Cape May proper. “Now, how about you idiots shut up while our fearless leader tells me where to go?” “I’d like to tell you where to go,” Derrick muttered. “The compound,” Roane said, staring out the window. “Zack, contact Doc and let him know we’re coming. He’ll need to identify what they drugged her with.” Zack nodded and reached for his cell phone. As they merged onto the Parkway, Roane thought about the woman they’d just saved. He stared at his arms. She’d raked him with inch-long claws. But despite the low growl when she’d been threatened, he had the impression she’d wanted more to escape than to harm. Interesting qualities for a lab rat. All of the former patients from the project were psychotic, Circs with no conscience who preyed on the weak. Caitlyn was the first they’d found who seemed fairly normal. Until her untimely change. Normal. He scowled, wishing he could banish the picture of her voluptuous body from his mind. Her sheer, white cotton shirt had done nothing to mask the perfection straining beneath. Instead, with her every effort to be free, the shirt had either molded to the fullness of her breasts or slid open to accent the slick valley between those bountiful mounds. God help him, but
Roane had zeroed in on the heat of her hard nipples as they raked across his chest with more force than her damned claws. “Doc’s standing by.” He nodded to Zack and blatantly stared at the speedometer, causing Ace to swear under his breath and slow down. A low, sudden groan captured everyone’s attention from the back. “She shouldn’t be doing that, should she?” Derrick asked, shifting in his seat. “The dart should have put her down for another few hours, at least. The ones the PPA use normally do.” Roane narrowed his gaze when he realized the rest of his men were squirming as well. He took a breath and froze as his dick swelled to a massive erection. “Shit, she’s in heat.”
Chapter Two
All of them groaned. Roane cursed this latest mission of Doc’s. Finding and erasing the PPA’s latest target should have been easy. The last dozen Roane and his crew had taken out had been stark-raving mad, labeled mass murderers by the press when found dead, the evidence of their misdeeds clearly around them. In the three years since Roane and the others had left Project Dawn, they’d only come across one Circ who seemed to be living a normal life. Caitlyn Chase. “I’m so hot,” she moaned, and Roane’s own temperature spiked. He couldn’t help noticing Ace’s hard-on. From the cursing behind him, he had a feeling they wouldn’t make it to Doc’s. The few times they’d been caught unaware by the mating heat, he and his team had taken care of the situation. But damn, it hadn’t been pretty, and that had been without a female present. With no hope now that they might avoid this mess, especially with that fucking unbelievable scent filling the SUV, Roane tried to minimize the damage. “Ace, take us to Kelly’s.” Ace nearly swerved off the road. “That’s not a good idea, man. Not at all.” “I’m not asking you, I’m telling you,” Roane growled, his hackles raised as he unconsciously began changing. He ripped though his shirt and toed off his shoes, grateful for the elastic waist of his shorts. His body filled out, his torso lengthening until he had to tilt his head to fit in the vehicle. Frustration increased his rage. Not a good time for Ace to challenge his leadership.
“Roane, not yet. Fuck. Hurry up, Ace,” Hale rumbled. “Kelly’s place is just a mile down the road. Unless you want Roane fully changed before we get out of the car? Besides, your girlfriend’s probably working. It’s barely three.” He ended on a gasp as Caitlyn spiked the air with more scent. Roane heard the sound of cloth tearing and prayed it was one of his men. The thought of Caitlyn naked had him grinding his teeth. To see her would surely destroy any vestige of control he had left. Zack scoffed in an inhuman timbre, “Kelly’s not his girlfriend.” “She will be,” Ace said as he yanked the steering wheel a hard right, his fingernails slowly replaced by claws. “So long as you keep your grubby hands off her.” “Challenge on, cub.” “The name is Two Bears, dickhead. It’s Cree.” “Whatever. Two Bears or not, I’m still going to kick your ass.” Zack flashed long, sharp teeth that Roane spotted in the rearview mirror. “After I fuck it.” “Challenge later,” Roane ordered, his voice raspy. “We don’t need you two releasing more scent into the air, not on top of hers. Not unless you want a repeat of what happened last time.” Silence filled the car. “Exactly. Get us to Kelly’s.” Roane did his best to contain himself, but the animal within sensed something it needed. The experimental testing they’d endured had more than changed their genetic construct. Not only could Roane shift into a stronger, beastly form that was neither human nor animal but a bit of both, he lived with enhanced instincts all the time. His intuition gave him every advantage, and it was telling him to make the female his. Now.
They pulled into the driveway of Kelly’s isolated beach house just as Roane leaped from the car and changed completely. “Get inside and get ready,” he warned in a low, thick voice. His men sped inside the house, half of them fully changed and nearly naked. Gnashing his teeth, Roane called on the humanity dwindling within him to go easy on the woman. She likely had no idea what a full-on rut with a Circ could be like. He grimaced at thoughts of his last heat. Thanks to those assholes at Pearson Labs, gender was not a factor when experiencing the need to procreate. Both males and females felt the urge. He and his men could control it, to an extent. Obviously, Caitlyn couldn’t. His dick throbbed when Caitlyn moaned. Swearing, Roane attacked the back hatch of the SUV. It opened, and to his dismay, he stared down at a nude woman. She hadn’t changed fully, though. Her skin remained soft and tanned, her body the same size as it had been. Ripe, fertile, and welcoming. Roane swallowed hard, his need monstrous. Suddenly his shorts, their distance, the cramped vehicle, everything that separated him from this woman was too much. Before he could spread those thighs and fuck her in the back of the SUV, she kicked out at him. Drowning in lust and taken by surprise, Roane stumbled back. She darted around him and scaled the six-foot fence caging Kelly’s backyard. Roane followed hard on her heels and caught her before she flew over the yard’s back fence. They slammed together against the wooden enclosure, and Roane lost it. His predatory senses guided him as she thrashed, and her scent
intensified. As much as Caitlyn might be confused, her body knew what it needed. Roane pinned her against the wall and ripped through the fastening of his shorts. In seconds, he was pressed skin to skin against her, rubbing against her firm ass with a need so profound, it hurt. “Turn around.” She shoved back against him and hissed, digging claws into the wood. “No.” Grinding into him, she panted, “I need…I want…” “I know.” His fangs made talking difficult. His beast wanted to drive into her; the man within wanted to stop everything. He didn’t know this woman, didn’t know what the PPA wanted her for. And he didn’t like the way she eroded his control, as if he had no will at all. Hell, he’d changed: grown several inches taller and wider, to include that hungry part of him between his legs. If he took her this way, he might very well hurt her. Yet instinct forced him to acknowledge that she was his, to take her right fucking now. Roane spread her ankles and lifted her hips, holding her off the ground with ease. He didn’t even take the time to prepare her before plunging deep. “Fuck,” he swore as he slid through her hot wetness. The combined scent of the two of them cut through any lingering resistance on his part as he pounded into her. His body didn’t care that he didn’t know her. His beast wanted her. She held onto the wooden fence as he took her from behind, his grasp on her hips hard enough to leave marks.
She met him thrust for thrust, gripping him with her tight pussy while slamming backward with as much force as he used to shove inside her. No finesse, no soft words. Just hard, animalistic fucking. He felt the moment nearing as she clamped around him and cried out, milking an orgasm from him. Roane couldn’t help himself as he roared his pleasure. His climax lasted through her hisses and moans, and pulsing jets of cum slid down her thighs. As his mind cleared, Roane realized she hadn’t experienced enough bliss to satisfy her. He now had his arms full of a spitting-mad Circ, one who’d fully changed into a beastly goddess. With a swiftness that shocked him, she pulled up off him and turned around. Slitted pupils, large fangs over plump red lips, and long, shaggy brown hair streaked with gold framed a face no longer human. Her skin had changed as well, still flesh but darker tan and tougher. She’d grown in size and now stood a mere head shorter than him. Her breasts had enlarged with her proportions, and he found himself fascinated with their berryred tips. Amazingly, after such an intense climax, his cock stirred. He wanted to bite her, to suck her tits until she came around him again. The vein at her neck throbbed. He could hear the blood rushing as he stared at it, and he wanted to sink his teeth in and hold tight while he fucked her. When he would have moved forward, her gaze darted over his shoulder. Roane heard familiar snarls and turned to see his men on Kelly’s back porch, all changed, naked, and aroused…and staring at them.
Irritated but in control of himself once more, now that he’d taken the edge off, he nodded toward the house. “Come on.” He inhaled more of her arousing scent and cursed. “I think it’s going to take a few of us to sate that appetite of yours.” Caitlyn blinked, and he saw a flash of her humanity in the panic there. Not giving her a chance to run and cause definite damage when his men instinctively hunted her down, Roane hauled her into his arms and headed for the porch. She spat and scratched at him, her fight arousing. Each swipe of her claws sent her scent into his skin, marking him -- just as he’d marked her, his cum settling into her womb. Hale held the others back, just barely, from jumping her. “One at a time,” Roane warned, not wanting his men to hurt her. “Give her some space.” “Are you fucking nuts?” Ace pushed past the others. “I need this. I need her.” He inhaled, his amber eyes going nearly black with desire. “You heard him,” Zack said in a low voice. “Back off.” Ace turned from Roane and Caitlyn to confront Zack. “Don’t tell me what to do.” Taking advantage of their brewing battle, Roane took Caitlyn inside, well aware of Derrick and Hale on his heels. Derrick motioned for Caitlyn. “Let him,” Hale said. “I can wait.” Better at controlling himself than the others, Hale could be counted on to be the voice of reason during rough times. Still, Roane thought his restraint amazing, considering how badly he
wanted inside Caitlyn again, and he’d just had her. Grudgingly releasing the handful in his arms, he gave her to Derrick. Derrick looked savage as he snarled at Caitlyn. Darker than his normal coloring when changed, his muscles were starkly outlined in the deep brown of his skin. His much larger frame was readily apparent as he covered Caitlyn on the floor. She tried to bite him when he leaned close and shoved her legs wide as he mounted her. “Easy, Derrick,” Hale cautioned in a voice almost too low to be heard. “She’s a precious female, ride her slowly.” Derrick snapped at Caitlyn to be still but made no move to hurt her. He sucked at her breasts and her neck while he pinned her hands to the ground and rubbed all over her. After hearing some heady groans, Roane wasn’t surprised when her legs wrapped tightly around Derrick as he began fucking her. Simultaneously aroused and jealous, Roane deliberately turned his back on the pair. “Let me know if you need me.” “Go. I can smell her on you, and it’s killing my control faster than these two going at it,” Hale rumbled. “God, Derrick, don’t play around. Fuck her already, before I come in whatever hole’s closest.” Derrick mumbled something unintelligible between his grunts of pleasure and Caitlyn’s cries of desire. Roane left them and followed Zack’s and Ace’s voices into the back bedroom, ready to pull them apart if things turned violent. He knew what to expect. They’d all experienced this mindnumbing lust before, sharing it the only way they could. Drawn
only to their own kind during the heat, they’d been cursed to fulfill each other. Nothing else seemed to slake the sexual need. But with Zack and Ace, the relationship went deeper than either would admit. Whereas before, the five of them had been forced to take each other, recently, Zack and Ace kept to themselves. A special bond had formed between them, one that no amount of harsh words or anger could sever. He found the pair grappling in Kelly’s bedroom. Damn, that poor woman endured a lot because of the squad. Now they’d have to once again replace her bedroom furniture. Ace broke her nightstand and smashed a lamp onto Zack’s skull. “Fuck. That’s it, pretty boy.” Zack knocked Ace into the wall, stunning him. Then he tossed the large male on his belly over the bed, but not before Roane saw both Zack’s and Ace’s rockhard dicks. Oh, yeah, Ace wanted it bad. Hell, Roane’s own arousal flared at the pair’s distinct perfume. Their scents mingled, stronger together than apart, until they were indistinguishable from each other. “Take it, Ace. You need it,” Roane said, stroking his growing erection. “Zack, try not to hurt him much. Not like last time.” “Get off me.” Ace struggled, but his movements slowed as Zack pressed forward. Strangely enough, when Circs changed, their cocks emitted a natural lubricant prior to sex. Though Roane had been worried about hurting Caitlyn with his size, he hadn’t had to work hard to slide inside her. Zack took that moment to plunge deep, and Ace moaned under him.
“In and out, that’s it, take it.” Zack panted as he thrust. “Soon we’ll have her with us too. Then it’ll be better. I swear.” Roane thought he knew who they were talking about, and it wasn’t Caitlyn. The pair had an obvious thing for Kelly Malloy, Doc’s assistant. But she was normal. Not a beast like them. He wondered what she would think of the relationship these two shared. It had taken them all quite a while to accept the necessity of sex with each other. Roane still felt uncomfortable with the things he and the others had done. He preferred Caitlyn’s snug warmth, without question. Zack continued to pound into Ace, who seemed to be humping the bed. Derrick’s hoarse shout from the other room drew his attention, but Roane forced himself to wait. He didn’t think he could handle watching Derrick pull out of his -- the -- female, not without seriously hurting him. “Yeah, Zack. Come in me.” Groaning, Zack shuddered, his ass flexing before he rammed home a few more times and stilled. He pulled out and flipped Ace over. Without pause, he centered on Ace’s weeping dick and took it in his mouth. Having been the recipient of Zack’s mouth himself a time or two, Roane couldn’t help a sympathetic groan when Ace bucked up into that warm, wet suction. He hurried out of the room, his hand still around his cock. He was hurting and needing relief. Derrick was lying on the ground, trying to catch his breath as Hale lay next to him over Caitlyn, latched onto her breasts. “On the couch,” Roane ordered.
Hale didn’t move as he sucked loudly. Caitlyn moaned, and Roane couldn’t wait. He pulled Hale off his female. “You want it? Get on the damned couch.” His eyes glazed, Hale stumbled to the couch and sat, gripping his cock. Roane lifted a confused Caitlyn to her feet. “You come enough, baby?” She blinked at him, not answering. He could tell by the tension in her frame she hadn’t. He carried her to Hale and turned her around, her back to his friend. “I’m going to set her over you. Once she’s on, spread your knees.” “Yeah, sure. Whatever you say. Come on, Roane. Give her to me.” Roane positioned Caitlyn and sucked in a breath as she settled over Hale’s cock. He locked her legs over Hale’s and spread her wider. Roane could see Hale sliding inside her and thought it the most erotic thing. His jealousy aside for the moment, he imagined himself inside her, what it would look like, what it had felt like. She lifted herself up before Hale slammed her back down again. The pair moaned, then she rose up again and rode him. But Caitlyn wasn’t getting what she needed. Roane knelt between their legs and spread her folds, focusing on her ripe clit. “You smell so good, Caitlyn.” God, he should have done this earlier, but he’d been too hard, too desperate. Now he intended to indulge. “Yeah, suck her. I want that pussy to grip me tight,” Hale said on
a raspy groan. His hands left her waist to grip her breasts, grazing her nipples with his claws and cupping her tits as she took him deeper. Roane didn’t need the encouragement. He clamped his mouth around her flesh and sucked hard. She clutched Hale’s thighs and mashed herself against Roane’s mouth. The scent of Caitlyn, Hale, and Derrick went straight to his head. Sex magnified tenfold. “More,” Hale said hoarsely. “Yeah, more. Fuck, I’m gonna come.” “Not yet,” Roane warned. “Let her take you there.” “Then hurry the hell up.” Caitlyn moaned, and her clit felt like a smooth, hard pebble. “That’s it, baby. Fall apart on my tongue. On Hale’s cock.” A glance up showed Hale’s hands around her tight nipples and quivering belly. Her eyes were closed, her face drawn in tortured ecstasy as she neared her climax. “Please,” she cried in a husky voice as she exploded. Hale swore and let go of her breasts to grind her over him. He gritted his teeth and came, shouting her name. Roane continued to eat her, his tongue running down her slit to Hale’s shaft, the taste of them both more than his beast could stand. He pulled himself to his feet and grabbed the back of her head, pulling her forward. “Taste me.” She opened her mouth, and her fangs immediately retracted.
Perfect. She wanted it as much as he did. Roane pushed forward, his head thrown back in ecstasy as the pressure built at the base of his spine. It centered in his balls and flowed into his shaft. “That’s it, take it all.” He thrust once, twice, changing back into his human form as he came. “That’s fuckin’ hot,” Hale said thickly as he gripped Caitlyn’s hips with normal hands. Sometime during their encounter, he’d changed back as well. Caitlyn licked Roane clean and followed the men, assuming her human form again. He withdrew from her mouth, and Hale gently disengaged. Caitlyn blinked sleepily at them both. When Roane took her in his arms again, she passed out. “Talk about being fucked to death.” Derrick groaned. “She wore me out. I don’t think I’ve ever come so hard.” “Me either,” Hale admitted on a sigh. “Yeah, well,” Roane paused, not sure what to say. They’d been through more shit than most families ever went through in a lifetime. His men were his brothers, closer than blood. Yet his growing possession for this female confused him. “Roane?” Zack called in a normal voice from the bedroom. “We’re good.” Ace shoved him out of the way. “Dick.” But the snarl that normally accompanied his insults wasn’t there. He looked
sleepy, his body slack with repletion. “I think we’re all good.” Roane scented all of them in the room. And for a moment, he relished the togetherness. She’s mine, ours. So long as they know where they stand, I think I can handle this. Until she’s carrying, and then all bets are off. “Carrying?” Breeding -- his inner beast translated, scaring the shit out of him. Where the hell did that come from? “Roane?” Hale stared at him, his hazel eyes concerned. “Nothing. Ah, let me clean her up. This was quite an introduction to the squad, you know.” Derrick chuckled. “An introduction. That’s one way of putting it.” “At least we’re still in one piece. Most of us are, at least.” Ace glared at Zack, who wisely said nothing. Roane took charge again. “I suggest one of you call Kelly in case she comes home early.” Ace and Zack paled and dashed for the phone. “Let her know we’ll take care of the damage. Hale, maybe you want to fill Doc in on our new friend’s situation. Derrick, grab our clothes, would you?” They all kept an extra set of clothing at Kelly’s, just in case. Anytime they changed without undressing first, they had major wardrobe problems. Roane took Caitlyn into the shower and cleaned her up. He paid particular attention to her sex, gratified that though she’d been well used, her body suffered no bruising or external damage. Another plus to being a Circ.
She slept through it all, not even rousing when he dried her off. With her long, honey blonde hair slicked back, her skin soft, tanned and flushed, and dark lashes fanning her cheeks, Caitlyn Chase looked like an angel. Damn. This woman just took three beasts to paradise with that sweet pussy and skilled mouth? This innocent thing? Though her file listed her in her late twenties, she looked much younger, except for that killer body. Forcing himself to think about anything other than the prime female in his arms, Roane allowed himself the one thing he’d been wanting to do since laying eyes on her. A glance at the bathroom door showed it still closed, and Caitlyn hadn’t stirred. He leaned down and kissed her soft lips. Instant connection. Caitlyn tensed, murmured something incoherent, then sighed into his mouth. She returned the kiss for a split second before seeming to nod off again. His lips trailed from her mouth to her cheek to her forehead. She snuggled closer to him, and Roane groaned. Crowding the lust in his belly was an unsettling, heavy sensation of contentedness. And he knew that no matter what the PPA, Doc, or his men wanted, he was keeping this one. Until I have her figured out, he hastily corrected himself. Then her ass is gone, and life continues as normal. We hunt the PPA. We take down Pearson Labs. We capture rogue Circs. He met his blurred reflection in the mirror. His chin rested on her golden head -- so small, so vulnerable. Her face lay against his chest, and her breath drifted over his skin, her scent marking him, mingling with his. He tightened his hold around her, protecting the sexy woman he’d only just found. Kill her if she’s
rogue? If she’s sane, give her to Doc to rehabilitate and send away? No way in hell. “I am so screwed.”
Chapter Three
Kelly Malloy closed her cell phone with a solid snap. “Problem?” Evan asked, peering through his glasses. He didn’t like the look in his assistant’s light blue eyes. “The guys did some damage at my place, Doc.” “Oh?” Another mating heat? They shouldn’t have had one so soon. Calculating, Evan realized they should have had another two weeks before dealing with that hormonal overload. “Ace said their new acquisition had some problems they hadn’t anticipated.” Evan kept his face expressionless, not wanting to set Kelly off on another tangent that would inevitably revolve around the irritating Zack and Ace. If he wasn’t mistaken, the young woman seemed green with envy. Interesting. “No one got hurt, I take it?” She shook her head. “Ace said Hale would be calling you with details.” At that moment, the phone rang. “Kelly, set up the additional room in the observation wing, just in case our new Circ isn’t the monster we’ve been expecting.” Kelly gave him a stiff nod and left. Evan picked up the phone, sighing at the mess on his expansive mahogany desk. Hell, he couldn’t see the desktop anymore. Time to let Kelly organize again, as she’d been threatening to do for weeks. “Hale?” he said into the phone, recognizing the number. “Fill
me in.” “Sorry, had a bit of a…distraction here.” “I heard.” Hale sighed. “I’m not sure what happened. We spotted her with two of the PPA’s assholes, Hoff and Dunn. They tranq’d her, but she managed to escape. We caught her and brought her in, but not before she ripped Roane a new one.” Hale chuckled. “We were halfway here when she lit up the vehicle with the sweetest perfume you’ve ever smelled. She went into heat in a split second.” “I have nothing on file that she’d changed before.” “I got the impression it was new to her, too. She looked panicked when we took her, and we overheard her complaining about being sick when Dunn and Hoff found her.” “Where is she now?” “In the shower with Roane.” A wealth of meaning filled that small statement. “We’ll be bringing her in shortly. I don’t think she’s rogue, just confused and afraid.” “And?” Hale paused. “Nothing. We’ll be there in an hour.” Hale disconnected. Evan stared at the phone as he hung up. In the shower with Roane? Since when had Roane ever personally cared for anyone outside of his squad? Then again, Caitlyn was the first female Circ -- hell, the first Circ period -- they’d encountered who hadn’t been feral.
Evan could only imagine what the squad went through when the mating heat overcame them. Seven years to the day after they’d been given their injections, they’d experienced their first heat. Since then, every few weeks the men were flooded with hormones that made it virtually impossible to resist the call to procreate. Unfortunately, they could only go to another mature Circ. And Circe’s Recruits were all male. He shifted uncomfortably, frowning at his lack of professionalism. The men didn’t need his lurid interest, though he blamed most of it on scientific curiosity. Instead, Evan concentrated on the girl. Caitlyn Chase. She’d been under Pearson Labs’ care for more than half her life. Then three years ago, they’d told her to leave, without reason. He could only guess that Elliot had lost his patience. The owner and head scientist at Pearson Labs, Elliot Pearl had a reputation as brutal and coldly efficient. Whatever the man’s motivations, he had every intent of making them real. Eight years ago, when the military had okayed Project Dawn, Evan had been as excited as anyone about being on the team. They’d actually created a formula to build super soldiers, men able to carry out tasks for Uncle Sam with an almost certain degree of success, thanks to manufactured preternatural abilities. Using his own idea to carry the serum to their subjects on the backs of a genetically altered virus, Pearson Labs had successfully outfitted two platoons of super soldiers. Circe’s Recruits -- seventy-eight men who were stronger, faster, and more intuitive than their fellow soldiers, airmen, Marines, and sailors. For five years, they’d carried out dangerous missions with resounding success. They manifested their abilities by changing, physically transforming into hulking beasts with slashing claws, fangs, and hardened skin.
And then the virus inside them, thought dormant, mutated the Circe serum, eroding their mental processes. Many Circs suffered from psychotic breakdowns and became savages, with no thought other than to satiate their base desires. Of the seventy-eight men, fifty had fallen into psychotic breakdowns, death their only means of control. Of the remaining twenty-eight, they’d lost twenty-three while tracking down and combating their out-of-control brethren. Only Roane, Hale, Derrick, Zack, and Ace had survived. Elliot Pearl had conveniently ignored his failures and concentrated on all the good they’d done. The government hadn’t seen it that way. Project Dawn had been disbanded. Pearson Labs moved once again into the private sector. And Evan -- “Doc” to his men -- took over their small squad of Circs. With his substantial fortune, he put his all into helping the men who’d survived -- they were his responsibility. There had been plenty of time for self-recrimination while they’d battled the government’s interest. Evan had used every connection he’d ever made to force the United States military to leave Circe’s Recruits alone. Not to mention threats of blackmail and political fallout, should the public know what the government had sanctioned. The squad faded away, no longer on anyone’s radar but Elliot’s. The bastard thought he could recreate Project Dawn, conveniently ignoring the madness that had befallen them just three years ago. In that time, Doc and the squad worked to control new variations on the “super soldiers” Elliot and the other scientists had created. In
so doing, they also strove to eliminate all of Elliot’s mistakes. Evan sat at his desk, pushed aside a stack of fallen folders, and dug out his keyboard. He reviewed his data. Since the project folded, the squad had uncovered and killed forty-six Circs. Four lived in anonymity, but Evan kept his eyes on them. As much as he wanted to bring them in for testing, they deserved to live as best they could before full maturity set in. From what he’d determined, the Circe serum increased all the senses, enhanced intuition, and made stronger, quicker, more effective fighting machines. Once full maturity blossomed, the mating instinct took over at monthly and sometimes bimonthly intervals. Hence the squad’s mating heat, which threw even these solid, dependable warriors into manic, lust-filled states. “In the shower with Roane,” sounded in his mind again. A female Circ in heat. The possibilities that allotted for intrigued the hell out of Evan. He had no hope that the men might let him observe their next heat with Caitlyn, but perhaps he could ferret more information from them and her when they arrived. Anything they told him would remain in strictest confidence, and it might help explain a few things. Such as why the PPA was after Caitlyn, and why Roane was suddenly acting very unlike himself. *****
Caitlyn groaned as awareness returned. Her body ached, her teeth hurt, and her head throbbed. She felt as if she’d been beaten with a two-by-four all over the place. “Hold on. We’re
almost there.” The gruff voice sounded familiar. She opened her eyes and found herself carried by a giant, darkhaired male. She wore an overlarge T-shirt and shorts -- not her own -- under a bright blue sky. The sun beat down on them, as hot as it had been in the outdoor plaza. In seconds she made the connection. He was one of the he-men from the alley. “What do you want with me? Are you PPA?” She squirmed in his arms, uncomfortable at how much she wanted to stay near the steady thrum of his heart. The man paused. The group with him slowed as well. Caitlyn shifted to see four more men as muscular as this one surrounding them. A sandy-haired man smiled and winked. A Native American and his gray-eyed friend nodded at the same time. The fourth male, a large African American, gave her a grin that made her feel surprisingly safe, despite being given by a man who could crush her like a bug with those large hands and huge biceps. “We’re not PPA.” The man holding her said in a harsh voice. He stared down at her with dark brown eyes, his gaze intent. “Well, somebody beat me.” She swallowed loudly and tried to appear in control. But damn, how could she maintain that facade while in this giant’s arms? “I feel sore all over.” Her captor didn’t blink. “What’s the last thing you remember about today?” The others grew still. “I was attacked on the beach. I ran, ducked into an alley, and met you guys. Then I must have passed out.” Or been knocked out by whatever Simon or Vincent shot me with.
She tried to push out of his arms. He squeezed her tighter, and she finally surrendered to his overpowering strength. The African American man gasped. “You don’t remember --” “Derrick,” the sandy-haired male cautioned. “Let’s get Doc to take a look at her.” “Oh, come on, Hale. You can’t be telling me she doesn’t remember taking three --” “Derrick, shut the fuck up,” the man holding her growled. Literally growled. “That’s just not right,” Derrick grumbled. “Talk about love ’em and leave ’em.” “Derrick,” Hale snapped. “Put a sock in it.” “Or a foot,” the gray-eyed man said. “Ace usually goes with the foot.” “Up yours, Zack,” the Native American returned. Caught in the byplay, it was a moment before Caitlyn realized they’d begun moving again. She continued to study the men around her, curious that she didn’t sense a threat from any of them. She’d always had a decent sense of others, but now, she could almost guarantee none of these men would hurt her. A woman’s intuition times twenty. Of course, it didn’t hurt that all five of them were heartstoppingly attractive. Not pretty by any stretch, they all possessed a certain quality, a raw readiness and strength that she found particularly striking. None more so than the man
carrying her. “I got the other names. Who are you?” she asked quietly. “Roane.” “Our fearless leader,” Hale said with a grin. “He’s a good man to have on your side.” “Or inside you,” she thought she heard Derrick mutter. One look from Roane, and Zack and Ace grabbed Derrick, pulling him behind. “We’ll meet you inside,” Zack said, glaring at Derrick. Hale opened a small, wall-mounted box next to the door, revealing a keypad. He punched in several numbers, and a lock released. Pushing open the large oak door in front of him, he waited for Roane. Before they entered, Caitlyn scented salt in the air. “Are we by the ocean?” No one answered her. They moved into a homey entryway, which led into a large family room. Plush, coral-colored cushions lay on the wicker furniture. Two sofas faced each other over a glass table. Photographs of the men together and apart decorated the mantle of a white-tiled fireplace. A young woman and an older man were also in several of the photos… sitting at least twenty feet away from where they stood. How the hell can I see that far? Roane chose that moment to turn down a hallway. He caught her closer to his chest, and heat gathered between her legs. Startled, she studied him, intrigued by his innate sensuality. He
remained oblivious to her scrutiny, and she reluctantly turned her attention back to her surroundings. By all appearances, they’d entered someone’s home. A large home, but a residence all the same. They walked past several bedrooms and what looked like a study. At the end of the hallway sat a wide oak door. The master bedroom, maybe? To the left of the door was a placid watercolor, a nicely done rendition of the dunes of Cape May, according to the footnote at the bottom, which she shouldn’t have been able to see from so far away. They approached the door. Hale lifted the picture to reveal another keypad. More beeps and then the door opened, the sound of air hissing like a pressure lock. Growing more nervous, Caitlyn flinched when Roane’s large palm eased her head against his chest. “Easy,” he murmured, and like that, she felt better. They entered a roomy, steel-walled elevator. After moving down what felt like several stories, the elevator stopped, and they exited into a sterile hallway. Rooms lined both sides of the passage, some walled in glass, some not. What looked like lab equipment and computers crowded each room. Clean, blue ceramic floor tiles, cheery yellow walls, and overhead inset lights lent the entire space a professional, yet comfortable, atmosphere -- the total opposite of Pearson Labs’ oppressive pea green walls, stark gray cement floors, and flickering fluorescent lights. The rooms in which Caitlyn had been tested reminded her of torture chambers, though that could have been due to the labs’ less-than-friendly scientists. To her surprise, all the rooms here remained empty save one, the one they entered.
“Caitlyn.” A handsome, gray-haired man smiled at her. His blue eyes twinkled behind gold-rimmed glasses. He wore slacks and a dress shirt under an oversized lab coat, all covering a wiry frame. “Welcome to the compound. I’m Doc.” Roane set her down gently. She wobbled on her feet, clutching at his arm so as not to fall on her face. Weakness invaded her limbs. She felt not at all herself but managed a shaky smile. “Thanks. I think.” Muttering under his breath, Roane took her in his arms again and deposited her on the lab table in the center of the room. He didn’t immediately let go, but trailed his fingers down her arms to her hands, where he swept his thumbs over her palms. Had she not known better, she’d swear he was purring. She felt possession in his touch, and the rightness of it confused her. “You two can go.” Doc motioned Roane and Hale to the door. Neither man moved. Doc raised his eyebrows. “Problem?” Roane scowled and slowly stepped back from Caitlyn. “We’ll be down the hall if you need us,” he said, more to her than to Doc. Then he stalked off before anyone could say a word. “That’s what I didn’t say before,” Hale said cryptically, glanced at Caitlyn, then followed Roane out the door. When Caitlyn shifted her gaze from the door to Doc, he was watching her. “Can you explain what’s happening to me?” Caitlyn meant the events of the day, but Doc answered her with a much more detailed version than she’d wanted. “My pleasure.” He pulled up a swivel stool and began. “From
the notes I’ve gathered, your father served ten years in the army special forces before he was killed.” “Yes.” Her family had been coming to pick her up from a weekend at the labs when they’d been hit by a semi. What did that have to do with the PPA and this venture down the rabbit hole? “During his military days, your father underwent the typical vaccinations of a basic entry workup. But he also received a little something extra that manifested in you, Caitlyn.” “Come again?” “Your father was given a particular enzyme that stimulates brain development, particularly in areas of the cerebellum and in the limbic system. The cerebellum plays a vital role in joining sensory perception and motor control. The limbic system includes such vital areas as the hypothalamus, the amygdala, and the olfactory bulb, which you Circs tend to use almost exclusively when --” “Doc, stop. You’re giving me a headache. What does all this mumbo jumbo have to do with my father?” Doc flushed. “Sorry. Your father was given an experimental drug, unbeknownst to him. Out of everyone dosed with that particular ‘vaccine,’ only one percent of the soldiers experienced any aftereffects.” He sighed. “You happen to be one of those aftereffects.” “How so?” “According to Pearson Labs, you possess the ability to secrete a powerful pheromone. Is this true?”
“Yes, but that ability went away years ago.” “Did it?” Doc asked quietly. “I thought it had. The lab kicked me out, said I no longer held any interest to them. To be honest, I was glad. The experiments using my ‘pheromones,’ as you call them, used to give me a whopper of a headache. The tests became less and less fun and more and more draining.” “So they kicked you out.” “Yes.” Doc took off his glasses and rubbed the lenses with a corner of his white coat. “Elliot Pearl had high hopes that you would be the one to bridge the gap. You see, you were his first Circ, what we call people who have doctored abilities far beyond normal men and women.” The skin on Caitlyn’s forearms rippled, and she swore in astonishment. “That’s part of it.” Doc pointed to her arm. “Your physical change. You see, when your father impregnated your mother, his DNA had been changed just enough to make you into something not altogether human. The injections the labs continued to give you over the years made sure that particular anomaly would manifest later on.” Caitlyn tried to keep up while forcing the ripple inside her to abate. “So I’m some kind of experiment? A product of my dad’s army days and Pearson Labs?” A freak? “Exactly,” Doc said gently. “You’ve met Circs like yourself in
Roane and the others. Like your father, they underwent experiments in the military. Even though they volunteered, they couldn’t know what they were getting into. They, and now you, can change. Your body will grow -- you’ll get taller and develop more muscle mass. Your skin will harden, like an organic armor. You’ll grow fangs and claws, have the ability to see, hear, and smell better than you ever have before. Your instincts will be sharper and faster. The ultimate soldier, if you will.” Caitlyn stared in shock. “Are you kidding me?” “I’m afraid not.” Doc patted her leg. “Don’t you remember shifting in the alley? Or about your time at Kelly’s? That house you visited before coming here?” “No, I don’t.” “Interesting.” He turned and scribbled something in a notebook. “Caitlyn, you have no reason to trust me. But the PPA is not a good group to have after you.” “That I believe.” She shivered, recalling the vile touch of Vincent and Simon. “Who are those guys, anyway?” “The Project’s Protection Agency. They work for Pearson Labs, and they do whatever Elliot Pearl tells them to. Including murder.” And rape. She didn’t want to think about that. “So what now? Why does the lab want me now, after all this time? They’re the ones who told me to leave. They could have asked me back, and I would have gone, at least to see what they wanted. Why the PPA?”
“I don’t know, yet. But the squad is working on it.” “The squad?” “Circe’s Recruits, the squad. Roane, Hale, Derrick, Zack, and Ace. Five ex-military men who work with me to make sure Elliot and his lab play by the rules.” Caitlyn studied him with more than her eyes, using the very extra senses he mentioned. She listened to what the strange awareness inside of her wanted to do. Leaning forward, she grabbed Doc by the shirt and brought him to her. She sniffed him, then set him back on his stool. Aware claws had sprung from a hand not her own, one twice the size of her palm, she stuttered, “You’re telling the truth. I’m not sure how I know that, but I know.” To her relief, her hand shrank, turning normal once more. Holy shit. “It’s okay, Caitlyn. This is a lot to take in. Why don’t we start with some basic blood work while you ask me whatever it is you want to know? It won’t hurt. I promise. And once I get some samples, I can give you more answers.” She eyed the medical paraphernalia on a steel side table. What could it hurt, especially if Doc answered her questions? The more she knew, the better. Unlike the PPA, he and his guys hadn’t hurt her. Yet. “Okay, Doc. Do your worst. But don’t even think about tying me down while you do it.” Doc grinned, slapped his hands together, and rubbed them. “You got it. Now lie back while I recline the table and ask away.” Caitlyn frowned. What did she want to know first? “Tell me
about Roane.”
Chapter Four
“Ace, give me back my phone.” Kelly glared at Ace and Zack as she stood before the stove wearing a “Kiss the Cook” apron. “It’s none of your business who I talk to on my own time.” “Ace, leave her alone,” Zack warned. “Who the hell is Stephen Folsom? You called him three times yesterday, and he’s in your address book.” “Let me see that.” Zack caught the phone Ace tossed him. “Answer him, Kelly.” Roane sighed and shared an exasperated look with Hale and Derrick. “Guys, leave her alone.” “My phone?” Kelly held out her hand like a princess demanding obedience. To Roane’s amusement, Zack and Ace grumbled their dislike of the entire situation while Zack handed it back. They stuffed their hands in their pockets and returned to the sofa, glaring between each other and Kelly all the while. Watching the local news with the rest of the squad, they all perked up when someone reported a hit-and-run on Beach Avenue in Cape May. “That was me,” Ace said proudly. “Fucker was so busy watching Caitlyn’s legs, he slammed into me, not the other way around. ’Course, I was a bit over the yellow lines when we hit, but the distraction worked like a charm.” “Watch your language.” Zack smacked him in the back of the head.
Roane saw Kelly smother a grin before she turned back to the stove. “Sorry,” Ace apologized. “Speaking of Caitlyn, where is she?” “With Doc,” Hale answered. “He’s running tests and answering her bazillion questions.” He glanced at Kelly and leaned in toward the others. “I don’t think it needs repeating, but Caitlyn’s unaware of what went down today. So shut the hell up about it, all right?” Everyone stared at Derrick. “Shit. Okay. Sorry, I was just surprised earlier.” “About what?” Kelly said from behind Roane. Damn, she was getting better at that. Sneaking around like a cat. Roane sent Derrick a warning glare. “Ah, nothing, Kelly. Just a mix-up when we took Caitlyn in.” “Forget about it,” Ace agreed. “Nothing for you to worry about, sweetness.” Ace gave her a lingering once-over. “Yeah. Roane took care of her -- it. The situation,” Zack amended lamely, his gaze also trapped on her body. “Hale and Derrick helped settle her down is all.” “Hmm,” was all Kelly said, but the tension in her slight frame eased. “Whatever. Dinner will be ready in a few, so you might want to wash up.” When no one moved, she cleared her throat. “If you want to eat, you might want to wash up.” Growling at the pigheaded woman Roane considered an aggravating part of his little family, he waited for the others
before he took his turn. His thoughts were on Caitlyn, as they’d been since he’d first spotted her in that alleyway. She’d been through a lot today. First the PPA, changing , taking him, Hale, and Derrick to bliss. Frankly, he was glad she didn’t remember it. He wanted to forget it as well. No one but Roane would touch her again, dammit. She belonged to him. “Roane, you need to relax,” Hale murmured and nudged him aside. “Your eyes aren’t right, man. I know the female freaks you out, but hold it together, at least through dinner.” Roane gritted his teeth, not as amused as Hale seemed to be. “What the fuck’s so funny?” “Not a thing, man. Nothing to laugh about when a tough-ass Circ gets his wires fried by a woman. No sirree.” “Asshole.” Roane pushed past him and cleaned up. When he returned to the kitchen, he found it empty. Everyone was seated in the large dining room, including Doc and Caitlyn. She looked worn out, though she put on a smiling face. “Hi, Kelly. Nice to meet you.” Caitlyn shook Kelly’s hand. Kelly sat on one side of her, Doc on the other. The jealous beast inside Roane eased as he sat at the foot of the table with the others. “It’s been a long day. We’ll postpone a full debrief until tomorrow,” Doc said before turning to Caitlyn. “After dinner, Kelly will show you to your room.” Caitlyn put up no protest and shoved a fork into the salad Kelly had prepared. Which made Roane wonder where the cook had gone.
“Doc, what happened to Diego?” “Family emergency. It checked out.” Yet Roane sensed the same unease the rest of the men felt. They all stared at Doc until he relented. “He’s working on something I assigned him. When I’m ready to tell you about it, I will,” he finished coolly. Roane grinned. “Sure thing, Doc.” Irritating the boss always pleased him. Why, he couldn’t say. But ruffling Doc’s feathers made the man seem more human and less a scientific genius with a limitless wallet. They spent the rest of the meal as usual. Zack and Ace annoyed one another and flirted with Kelly, who ignored them in favor of someone else -- Caitlyn. Doc and Derrick talked baseball while Hale waxed on and on about the newest hottie waiting tables at The Ugly Mug, one of his favorite stops in town. Under his breath, he described her with awe. “She has the nicest tits. Really full. Long-ass legs that wrap around a body just right.” Hale groaned and sucked down his beer. “But best of all, she’s actually intelligent under all that blonde hair. Likeable, too, especially while she’s blowing you. Friendlier gal I’ve yet to meet.” “For God’s sake, Hale, you sound like you’re in heat.” Roane huffed in disgust. All this talk of long legs and big breasts made him think of Caitlyn when he needed to concentrate elsewhere. “In lust, maybe. I think we already did ‘in heat,’ bro.” Hale smirked.
“You look in her direction again, and I’ll rip that smug grin right off your fucking face,” he whispered harshly, knowing the other Circs could hear him. Caitlyn, thankfully, seemed absorbed in whatever Kelly was saying. “See, this is what I’m talking about,” Hale whispered. “You’re wrapped too tight. Easy, Roane. I’m just kidding around. I like Caitlyn. She seems like a nice girl.” My nice girl, the beast in Roane snarled. “Roane, did you see the Cubs beat the Braves today?” Derrick shook his head. “If you’re not careful, you’re gonna lose a shitload of money to me. Betting on the Braves. Man. Then again, no one ever claimed you were the sharpest tool in the shed.” Derrick chuckled, and Roane reluctantly left Hale alone as he finished his dinner. He caught Caitlyn eyeing him with uncertainty. The small smile he gave her didn’t seem to instill any more confidence. “Wow, Kelly. That was great.” Caitlyn placed her napkin on the table by her half-eaten plate of food. “It’s been a long day, and I’m beat.” She smiled at Doc. “I really appreciate all you’re doing for me. But if you don’t mind, I’d like to get some rest now.” Doc stood, gentleman that he was. He glared at the rest of the table, and they shot out of their chairs to their feet. “Have a good night’s rest, Caitlyn. We’ll start more testing tomorrow. Sleep in and relax. You’re safe here.” She nodded her good night to the others but paused when she faced Roane. “Good night, and thanks.” Quickly turning on her heel, she joined Kelly and left the room.
Silence lingered. Roane glanced away from the women’s exit to find everyone watching him. “What?” Doc narrowed his gaze. “A little possessive, aren’t we?” Not “we,” professor. Me. Roane ignored the taunting voice in his head. “Not at all.” “Good. Because Caitlyn is very new to all this, despite her background. She’s a newly turned Circ, just maturing.” Doc waved them to sit and continued when they did. “I expect she’ll go into heat a few more times this week before she settles.” Roane’s internal temperature skyrocketed at the news. “And that’s going to cause problems if you’re feeling possessive.” “It’s just because we’ve found a female.” Roane lied through his teeth, not yet ready to announce how he felt when he didn’t understand it himself. As leader of this ragtag band of genetic anomalies, he was expected to be strong, in control. Battling his inner beast was hard enough. Fighting his new instincts to claim Caitlyn bore close watching. “Uh-huh.” Hale rolled his eyes. “That’s why any of us even try sniffing in her direction and you’re ready to tear our heads off.” “Not any of you. Just you, Hale, because you’re an ass.” Derrick snickered. “He’s got you there. You are an ass.” “Shut up.” “No, really,” Zack added with a smile. “You’re too arrogant and too horny. And if you look at Kelly the way you look at Caitlyn,
I’m going to rip off your balls --” “And feed them to you one by one,” Ace ended, smiling though his suddenly sharp teeth. Doc sighed. “This is getting ugly.” “It’s too many damned females around,” Derrick muttered. “They’re always trouble.” “That I agree with.” Hale nodded. “The addition of a female Circ is bound to cause problems,” Doc said thoughtfully. “And interesting dynamics. I want the five of you in Lab A first thing in the morning. No arguments.” The men groaned but agreed. Doc called the shots. The head man at his little “compound,” his money paid for their survival and the roof over their heads. Granted, they fulfilled their end of things by dealing with Pearson Labs and their misfits, but without Doc, it’d be a hell of a lot harder to pool their resources while fighting against Elliot Pearl. “Yeah, yeah.” Roane stood and stretched, deliberately taking his time. A man in control of his beast and his urges. “I’m turning in. I’ll see you idiots tomorrow.” “That’s Mr. Idiot to you,” Hale joked. “Later, Romeo.” Roane flipped him and the others off as they gave him crap about going to sleep early. He walked down the hall to his room. Opposite the passage
leading to the elevator shaft, his room was in another wing on the ground floor of the three-storied living quarters. Doc had spared no expense when building his small fortress. They lived on thirty acres of private land bordered by two farms. A half hour from the ocean, they also had water access should they need an escape route. In the years they’d lived here, they’d made a home for themselves. Despite dealing with Hale’s rabid sex life, Zack and Ace as they irritated the hell out of one another, and Derrick’s cautious approach to anything resembling trust, Roane didn’t want to be anywhere else. Here he had purpose. A family. He didn’t even mind Doc’s constant prodding. The man had more of Roane’s blood in bags and vials than Roane had in his entire body, but he knew Doc only wanted the best for the squad. Shit, if it weren’t for Doc, they probably wouldn’t have lived through the hell at the end of Project Dawn. Uncomfortable with the notion, Roane was just about to slam the door shut on his bedroom and his thoughts when the notion to see Caitlyn grabbed him and wouldn’t let go. The minute he rounded the corner toward her hallway the scent of heaven hit his nose. He immediately raced toward Caitlyn, sure he’d have to fight off the others, only to see her standing alone with Kelly in the doorway of her room. Her eyes widened when she noticed him, but other than that, she said nothing to alert Kelly to his presence. “If you need me, I’ll be staying down the hall tonight. Third door on your left past the bathroom. It’s not that confusing, really,” Kelly said with a laugh. “Five rooms total in this hallway. Doc
practically lives down in his lab. So I’m the only other one who occupies a room here when necessary. The guys are all by themselves around the corner and down another corridor. Just holler if you need me.” “Thanks, Kelly. I will.” Kelly turned to rejoin the others, he assumed. She grinned when she saw him but said nothing and left. Roane lifted his nose in the air and parted his lips to use all of his olfactory senses. He tasted Caitlyn’s need, yet he remained in control of the change. An odd happenstance, yet she hadn’t changed either, and the others hadn’t seemed to sense her. What the hell was this puzzle? And why did he feel compelled to solve it? “Hi, Roane.” He approached slowly, stalking his prey. She didn’t move, though her hands clenched at her sides. Still normal fingernails and small hands, no claws, no large fists. “Caitlyn.” Up close she smelled like…his. His cock swelled as her scent settled over him. “You called, I came.” Well, not yet. But I’m gonna come all the same. Damn, she’s hot. His beast had no problem putting aside the fact he didn’t really know this woman. It didn’t care what she’d been through, or how tired she must surely feel. All it knew was that her beast needed, and he was there to sate her hungers, no matter what they might be. “I…called?” Caitlyn took a step back, one he encouraged by stepping forward. In seconds, they were inside her room.
Roane turned and locked the door behind him. He settled against it and crossed his arms over his chest, waiting for her to make the next move. “Roane?” “Yeah?” Maybe she’d start with her top, so he could see her nipples. He hadn’t had the concentration to focus on them before, but now he wanted to suckle her. To bite her breasts, marking her tits as his. Then he’d roam down that soft, golden belly flushed with sun. He’d lick his way toward her pussy, the lips he remembered as bare, smooth, and hiding a succulent feast. Growing harder as he stared, he sensed her nervousness, inflaming the predatory instincts within. “I didn’t call for you.” Caitlyn swallowed and took another step back, her knees bumping the edge of the bed. “So good night.” She glanced toward the door, as if he should take the hint. “Why are you wet for me?” he asked bluntly, his fangs piercing his gums as he spoke. He worked to hold on to his humanity, not wanting to lose control. Not yet. She blushed a dark red. “I-I… What are you talking about?” Yet she subtly rubbed her thighs together, and her scent wafted over him like a drug. “Your pussy’s wet. You nipples are hard. You want me, Caitlyn. That’s right, baby, I can smell your need. You called me with it. Now, give it to me.” He lifted his shirt over his head and tossed it to the floor. He’d removed his shoes in his bedroom and now wore only his shorts, the cotton straining over a raging erection
she couldn’t help but notice. “You-you have fangs,” she gasped. “And a…oh, hell. You have a hard-on the size of Texas. I’d have to be blind to miss that,” she said sharply, her belligerence surprising and welcome. Aside from her animalistic acceptance when changing , this was the first time he’d sensed her strong will. “Look your fill.” He stepped out of his shorts and proffered his cock, holding it for her inspection. “See how my slit fills with cream? How hard and hot I am? Come on, Caitlyn. Come touch me,” he prodded and began pumping his shaft. “Put those small, warm hands around my cock. Better yet, put those ripe lips around me,” he rasped, imagining it all too easily. And just like that, the room filled with the scent of his lust. Her eyes narrowed. “You’re doing this to me. Making me want you like this.” He licked his lips, wanting a taste of the cream between her legs. “No, you did this. It’s your scent that brought me here.” His fangs retracted, forced away by his will. “Now, stop playing and fix it. Suck me hard, baby.” He couldn’t help his dominant tone, but he admitted to himself, he wanted to see how she’d react. He knew she wanted him. But how much? “How about you suck me instead?” Caitlyn ripped off her shirt, shorts, and undergarments until she stood before him gloriously nude. Her golden hair shimmered over her shoulders, framing a face flushed from arousal, green eyes darkened with need. She stood straight, her chest out, her legs spread wide. With her fingers, she spread herself for his gaze.
“Shit, yeah,” he whispered, drawn to her like a moth to flame. He knelt in front of her before he knew what he was doing. “Suck me, bite me,” she rasped in a harsh voice. “Make this nightmare disappear, Roane. Make me come.” She ended on a breath as he took the whole of her clit in his mouth and sucked hard.
Chapter Five
Caitlyn inhaled sharply as Roane took her beyond pleasure. Though normally comfortable with her sexuality, she wasn’t loose by any means. She’d never in her life ordered a man to “suck me instead.” The instincts surging to life within her had a hold on her libido. Damn if it didn’t race any time she was in Roane’s presence. Something about him called to her. She threaded her hands through his thick, dark hair. God, he had a wonderful mouth. He used all of it: lips, tongue, and teeth, as he brought her closer and closer to climax. Caitlyn groaned when he sucked hard, drawing the tight bud between his teeth. “You taste right,” he growled as he gripped her ass, bringing her even closer to his mouth. He shoved a finger inside her, pushing hard into her sex. Caitlyn’s knees gave out on her as she gushed, coming hard in an instant. Roane groaned her name and continued to lick her, ignoring her halfhearted attempts to push him away. The oversensitivity she would have expected didn’t come. Instead, she crested her climax, caught up in his touch as he pushed her toward another. “That’s it,” Roane said in a low voice as he guided her to the bed. She sank onto it and lay back, limp, yet ready to do whatever he wanted, if he’d only give her that ecstasy again. “Give me what I need, honey. All of it.” “Yes,” she whispered, entranced by the preternatural gleam in
his gaze before he moved over her to nuzzle her breasts. “I love your tits,” he sighed. “So fucking pretty.” He latched onto one, biting it hard enough to make her gasp before sucking the sting away. The contrasting pleasure and pain enhanced her enjoyment, and before long, she felt Roane’s teeth everywhere. Playful nips that turned hard, then soft as he laved away the warm hurt. His large palms cupped her breasts as he sucked, drawing her into a euphoric state as she teetered on the edge of an orgasm. His cock continued to rub against her inner thighs, teasing with the promise of fulfillment. “Roane, please.” She gasped as he kissed his way toward her neck. “Please what?” He bit again, and she arched into him. This time, he held tight. She felt the sharp edges of his teeth piercing her, followed by a rush of heat. Roane swore and shoved her knees apart with his thigh. Before she could plead for him to make the overwhelming burn stop, he thrust hard and deep inside her. The roughness of his taking distracted her from the fire in her blood as he toyed with the tendon in her neck, alternately nipping and licking away the fluid pooling there. He lifted his head and braced himself on his elbows, stilling inside her. “You’re mine, Caitlyn. All mine. Say it.” She couldn’t think past the fullness between her legs. Her clit was on fire, his movements stoking her arousal toward excruciating ecstasy. “No, Roane. Don’t stop.” “Mine.” He bit her neck again and withdrew his shaft.
Moaning at the loss, she cried out when he plunged deep. He pounded into her as he licked at her flesh. “Fuck, yes. This is so good. Say it, Caitlyn.” Raspy breathing took his words as he fucked her without mercy. “Who do you belong to?” “You,” she answered without thinking. She needed him to finish, to feel his seed bathing her womb. “Now give it to me. All of it,” she said in a growl not human. “In me. Mine.” “Yes,” he hissed and ground against her. Caitlyn came, drawing him deeper as he jetted inside her with force. She’d never before felt anyone come inside her, but her sensitized flesh could feel his warm seed filling her. Joy blanketed her body as she milked him dry. When Roane finally withdrew, she smiled sleepily, barely aware of anything but a profound sense of contentment. “You made a mess.” “A big one.” He grunted. “You’re covered with my cum.” She made an attempt to move out from under him but went nowhere. “Leave it. I like you covered with me. Inside and out,” he said with a grin that faded when their eyes met. His eyes were so dark they looked black. So sexy and commanding. “Remember who you belong to, baby.” “You,” she whispered, recognizing the truth though she didn’t
understand the why of it. For now, she hastened to add, but the beast within her refused to verbally deny Roane what he wanted to hear. “That’s right. Mine.” Before she could say anything more, he managed to shove himself inside her again, stunning her that he was still half-hard. He rolled to his side and tucked her head against his shoulder. “Now sleep. I’ll protect you.” Exhaustion struck her all of a sudden. Not questioning anything anymore, she drifted off, inhaling his scent with every breath she took. She awakened later, her body screaming with pleasure. Roane had her facedown on the bed, her ass in the air as he shafted her in a frenzied pace. She felt every inch of him in this position, and she couldn’t stop from rocking back into him. “You’re so tight,” he groaned and shuddered, filling her once more. “God, I love coming inside you.” Something about what he said cautioned her, but then he withdrew, flipped her over, and went down on her, and every thought in her head flew away on wings of desire. Bright light filtered through the lone window in the room, hitting her eyes. Caitlyn tried to block it but was unable to. A thick, muscular arm caged hers and a large hand splayed over her belly. She squirmed and felt Roane shifting, his steely cock prodding her ass. “No more,” she groaned and turned her head into the pillow. Her whole body felt sore.
They’d had sex at least twice more after he’d taken her from behind. To her chagrin, she’d encouraged him each time. Though they’d only just met, she knew him. That scent drew her. It was no longer just his own, but a subtle combination of them both that proclaimed to one and all who belonged to whom. When Roane turned onto his back, freeing her, Caitlyn yawned and stretched. She grimaced when she moved and felt sticky between her thighs. “Good Lord,” she said, feeling her face heat. “I’m full of… Oh my God! Your cum. In me. We had unprotected sex!” She felt like a complete moron. They’d been going at it all night, and she just now realized her dilemma? “Four times,” he agreed, sounding amused. “Or was that five?” “It’s not funny,” she seethed, trying to remember where she was in her cycle, which was to say nothing of the panic she felt about disease. “Aren’t you worried I might have given you something? You don’t know me from Adam.” Roane pinned her to the bed in a flash, his grin white, wide, and satisfied. “Baby, I fucked you so hard, you have to be swimming in me right about now. Circs don’t get sick, so if you thought you were carrying something, you’re not --” “I’m clean, you jerk. I just meant that you don’t know me well enough to know that. For all I know, you have something. Rabies, maybe,” she muttered, flushing when he chuckled. “I like this side of you. Feisty, yet shy. You’re hot, baby.” The familiar gleam in his gaze warned her.
She shot a hand to his chest to stop his descending mouth. “Now hold on. This is just really weird.” Caitlyn shook her head. Last night seemed like a dream. She’d ordered Roane to eat her. Oh, shit. What the hell had she been thinking? “That blush is killing me,” Roane said in a thick voice. “You get all red when you come, too, you know. When your pussy clenches me tight, hugging me --” “Stop.” She gasped, once again thoroughly turned on. “Am I in heat?” she said to herself. “I don’t think so. If you were, the rest of the team would have been in here by now. Far as I can tell, this is just between you and me.” He sounded relieved by the fact. The rest of the team? She was caught between his odd comment and her pressing worries. “Why didn’t you use protection?” “From what?” He looked honestly confused. The dark brown of his eyes drew her, the depths filled with a peace she hadn’t before seen in him. “From conceiving a b-a-b-y,” she said slowly, so as to avoid any confusion. Roane blinked. “Baby, right.” He shrugged. “That’s a possibility, I guess.” “You guess?” She stared at him in shock. “I admit, I wasn’t really thinking last night. I got your invitation, and I came. Many times,” he added with a smirk. She wanted to brain him. The thought of a baby put her in panic
mode. She was nowhere near ready for motherhood on a good day. And turning into some psycho beast with the threatening PPA on her ass definitely did not qualify as a good day. Caitlyn opened her mouth to ask Roane what he meant about her “invitation” when she saw his gaze focused on her breasts. He leaned close and took a nipple in his mouth before she could speak. Heat centered in the tight bud and traveled like lightning to her groin. “Not again,” she groaned, caught in that crazy lust that muddled everything. Roane sighed and sucked harder. It took everything she had to push him away. She rolled out from under him with a speed she’d only used once before -- when she’d fled Vincent and Simon. Roane whistled. “You’re fast, baby. Not bad. I really like this side of you, I have to admit. A real hellcat.” She gasped when she realized she’d grown several inches… everywhere. Her limbs, torso, and body felt bigger. Her vision seemed keener, her sense of hearing and smell intensified as well. Right now, Roane smelled like a vanilla cupcake, her favorite. She centered on his lengthening cock and licked her lips. “Yeah, that’d be good.” Roane bit his lip and groaned. “How about you swallow me again?” “What do you mean, again?” A brief moment of clarity dawned, and she forced herself back to awareness. How, she didn’t know, but her body returned to normal. It felt like sliding through a slender tube, squeezing back into her smaller frame. Nothing painful, just pressure.
“Come on, baby. Do we really have to discuss this now? I’m hurting.” He held his huge cock like an offering. One she had to force herself not to worship. “Roane, this isn’t funny. I could get pregnant if we keep this up. Hell, I could be pregnant now.” “You’re not.” He stroked his cock. “You can tell?” She swallowed nervously, fascinated with his swollen member. “Your scent hasn’t changed. Still as sweet and spicy as before.” He wiped a drop of precum from his slit. “Coming inside you is pure heaven, Caitlyn. How about we go five out of six?” Annoyed with him and her lust-crazed brain, she shoved herself into the robe hanging off the back of the door and stalked out of the room. Thankfully, she didn’t run into anyone on the way to the bathroom. Once inside, Caitlyn locked the door before disrobing to enter the shower. Pulsing jets of hot water soothed her, enough to encourage her to sag to the floor of the walk-in stall. Last night played like the whispers of a dream. She’d ordered a man she’d just met to eat her. And dammit, he had. She’d never in her life come so hard or so many times. Like a drug, Roane slid through her system. Over, under, and behind her, Roane had climaxed inside her each time they’d had sex. Caitlyn couldn’t understand why it had taken her this long to realize they hadn’t used protection. It was almost as if she wanted to get pregnant. Which she didn’t.
She could only blame her stupidity on the many surprises she’d had yesterday. She’d been tired, afraid…taken advantage of. She glared at the white walls of the shower and stood. Reaching for the shampoo, she scrubbed her hair with the floral-scented soap. Was it any wonder she barely knew her name this morning? As if in an erotic dream, she remembered her marathon sex with a seductive stranger. Hell, Roane had her believing she belonged to him. Thankfully, in the light of day, she realized her shock at the past day’s events and her own tiredness had contributed to Roane’s odd delirium. She belonged to no one but herself. Caitlyn Chase’s independence remained intact. Which reminded her. She only had so much time to deal with this nutty scenario. Doc would have to get her up to speed before her vacation ended. She’d deal with being a Circ, so long as she could fit it into her schedule, along with her clients. She stilled under the water and cursed when soap ran in her eyes. Am I nuts? I have the PPA after me, and I’m still not sure what they are. I’m turning into God-knows-what, and I’m suddenly horny as hell. How is my life going to go back to normal now? “At least I know I’m not sick anymore.” The one plus Doc had explained about this mess. All of her previous symptoms -- the weakness, the aches and nausea -- had been her body’s way of preparing to change. Then there was the killer sex, honesty compelled her to admit. She could now die a happy woman, having achieved the ultimate orgasm, thanks to Roane. “Right. So no need to fall under his spell again,” she murmured, trying to convince herself to avoid the man.
No diseases, great. No babies…yet. She just had to keep him at a distance while she figured out what to do about being a Circ. Doc would help her. He had a trustworthy scent. Oh, hell, now I’m judging by scent. I’m turning into an animal. Bemoaning the inanity of her life, Caitlyn finished cleaning herself, scrubbing the remnants of her steamy night away. She couldn’t stop blushing as she dried off, amazed at how wild she’d been. The mirror had fogged over, and she wiped at it with her towel, determined to make herself presentable before she faced everyone else this morning. Caitlyn scowled. She’d remind Roane to keep what they’d done private. If he was one of those kiss-and-tell guys, she’d kick his… “Ass!” Caitlyn stared in horror at the bruises and bite marks over her throat, breasts, and belly. Even her thighs had been treated to Roane’s rough play. Oddly enough, none of the markings hurt, but they were clearly a visible reminder that “Roane had been here.” Shoving herself back into the robe, Caitlyn hightailed it out of the bathroom and down the hall to her room. As luck would have it, Roane waited for her on the bed, lounging in his shorts. She ripped open her robe. “Look what you did to me!” Roane stared, his jaw slack. “Holy shit. I did that?” He rose, his face blank as he reached out to touch the bite mark around her right nipple. “Does it hurt?” The minute his finger touched her flesh, heat rushed in its wake. She sucked in a breath. “No.” “Good.” He leaned down and took her nipple in his mouth.
“Damn, Caitlyn, you’re addicting.” He shook his head. “I’m going to go back to my room to clean up. I’ll see you at breakfast, honey. Oh, and Kelly dropped off a set of clothes for you on the dresser.” Another quick kiss, this one on her lips, and he left, shutting the door firmly behind him. So much for keeping her distance. She fell back on the bed, clutching the robe. Roane hadn’t seemed bothered by her marks at all. He’d kissed the bite mark over her breast. His touch felt both like a mark of ownership and a comforting caress. What the hell did that mean? More to the point, why didn’t she mind the thought of having sex with him again, just as soon as she could manage it? Groaning, she covered her eyes with her forearm. “I am so screwed.” Roane wandered back to his room. His body felt liquid, his mind fogged under the pleasant buzz of gratification. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this good. Caitlyn Chase: the cure that healed all. He didn’t know how to explain their coming together other than to label it explosive. Around the female, his body hardened like stone. Granted, much of what he felt was based in the physical. Her breasts, her ass, her soft, smooth belly, just waiting to grow round with his -Roane cursed and stopped, leaning against a wall to gather his bearings. He’d have to tamp down this breeding instinct. Caitlyn was right to fear getting pregnant. He’d never before had sex with a woman without protection. With other normal women, protection was his first concern. He didn’t need children at this
point in his life, and couldn’t imagine bringing a baby into such a danger-fraught existence. Caitlyn threw his thoughts out of whack, tampering with the animal impulses he normally had only when changed. She was rare, a female Circ who hadn’t gone crazy and who seemed every bit as sexy and likeable as she’d first appeared. Hell, she’d taken him without flinching, at turns dominating and then submitting. He couldn’t predict what she’d do, and he loved her mental toughness. Unfortunately, reminders that she would be going through another heat very soon didn’t sit well with him. Before, he’d accepted sharing her with the others. Now, he didn’t think he could handle it. The beast inside him snarled with contempt, that he would be so weak he couldn’t hold on to what was his. This is going to be a big problem. Zack and Ace would keep their distance. The two had each other and Kelly as a distant third. Hale and Derrick would want her again; he knew it. And who could blame them? The mating heat struck hard when it hit. Sex with each other had been a necessary evil, but with Caitlyn now available, did he have the right to tell them to back off? And what about Caitlyn? When the heat struck again, would she prove insatiable, would she need three or even five of them? Or would she remain his and only his? “Fuck, I hate relationships,” he muttered, his calm fading as the implications of his jealousy took hold. Maybe the best thing to do would be to distance himself before he grew too overbearing around her. Let her take whomever she wanted. She hadn’t committed to him yet. Who knew if she would, based on one incredible night of sex. Just the thought had him half-changing . He swore under his
breath and stalked to his room. Throwing open the door, he found the last four people he wanted a conversation with. “Well, well.” Hale whistled. “You were right.” Derrick rubbed his jaw in thought. “The big dog was sniffing after a tasty bone.” “I don’t need this.” Roane pushed past Zack and Ace, who grinned from ear to ear, and flopped down on his bed. “Come on, Roane. We all saw it coming.” Ace grinned nastily at his pun. Zack laughed. “I’m sure he was ‘coming’ all night. For the record, we heard every damned grunt and groan. You sure the hell weren’t keeping quiet.” “Not from Circ ears,” Ace agreed. “Don’t tell Caitlyn.” Roane could just imagine how horrified she’d be to know four horny Circs had been listening in on their lovemaking. Sex, he reminded himself. Not lovemaking. Sex. Nothing super emotional about sex. Just two bodies humping in the night. “Yeah, Derrick, keep your big mouth shut.” Hale frowned at the large male. “I swear, you’re worse than a woman, the way you talk.” “Fuck you.” Derrick shoved Hale, who promptly shoved him back. Someone landed a punch and then Ace, the resident hothead, joined the fray. A lamp, picture frame, and DVD player crashed to the floor before Roane stirred himself to break up the fight.
Zack, damn his hide, stood in the far corner of the room with his arms crossed, looking satisfied. “Thanks for helping.” Roane grunted, avoiding Derrick’s fist and knocking him to the floor. He rammed Ace into the wall and countered Hale’s attempted uppercut with a blow to his belly. The others growled and groaned while Zack waited patiently. “I was waiting for Ace to get over the snit Kelly put him in. Thanks, guys.” “It’s not a snit, asshole. Kelly pissed me off. She’s messing around with some other guy. You telling me that doesn’t bother you?” “Great, Zack.” Roane sighed. “Remind Ace why he was mad in the first place. I swear, you two were made for one another.” And how stupid was that to say, considering they all knew how awkward Ace felt about his intimate relationship with Zack. “Hey, we can’t all be as happy as you are, Romeo,” Ace snarled. “Maybe if I’d been shoving my dick between some chick’s legs all fucking night I’d --” Ace lost the rest of what he might have said when Roane took him by the neck and lifted him off the ground against the wall. “Mind what you say about the female,” Roane threatened. He changed in an instant, faster than he’d ever shifted before. Then again, he’d never been this mad. “Caitlyn’s a Circ. You’ll treat her with respect, not as some whore on the block. She’s a decent woman who’s been through a lot. Don’t forget it.” “Ah, Roane? You might want to ease up on his throat. I don’t
think he can answer you without his windpipe,” Hale said dryly. Roane dropped Ace to his feet, ignoring the annoyance in his eyes. “Zack, you get him under control before I do. I can guarandamn-tee you, it won’t be pretty.” Zack nodded, his humor gone. “Come on, Ace. Stop being a dick. Caitlyn doesn’t deserve it.” “She doesn’t, but Roane probably does,” Derrick added. “You know what they say, it all rolls downhill. And considering how badly this room smells, you can believe this is where it all hits the fan.” With a grin, he nodded to the clock. “When you ladies are done running your mouths, Doc wants to see us in Lab A, remember?” So much for meeting Caitlyn at breakfast. “Sorry, Roane,” Ace muttered and shoved Zack ahead of him out the door. Derrick followed, but Hale stopped with Roane behind him. “What now?” Roane asked. “Might want to shower before you come down. Even to a lesssensitive nose, you smell like sex. You know Doc’s just dying to run some fertility tests. Wouldn’t want to give him a reason, now, would you?” “Hell.” “Dude, you are seriously losing it. Next time you’re making it with the ultrasexy Circ around the corner, keep it down, would you? I’m having a hard enough time holding it together without you and Caitlyn setting fire to my virgin sheets.”
Hale left, and Roane took his shower as quickly as he could, knowing he had to reach the lab before Caitlyn arrived. God knew what those morons would say to her without him there.
Chapter Six
After a quiet, solitary breakfast consisting of coffee and toast, Caitlyn found Kelly waiting for her by the door to the underground lab. “I hope you had a good night’s rest. Doc’s excited by you being here. The man can lose all sense of time when he’s working. I have to remind him to eat, you know. Don’t be afraid to tell him when you get tired or hungry. Lord knows, the guys whine when they’ve had enough.” Kelly grinned, her dimples flashing. “Thanks.” Her nerves flared. Oddly enough, Caitlyn felt more anxious about seeing Roane again than she did about going through Doc’s tests. She still couldn’t understand her behavior with the giant Circ. Incredible sex with a stranger who felt more familiar to her than any man she’d ever known. Baffling. Kelly left her at a door marked Laboratory A. Entering, Caitlyn joined four of the squad. Roane and Doc remained absent. Her pulse settled into an easy rhythm. At least she wouldn’t have to deal with her lover right away. She had to work to tame the blush threatening to consume her. Oh, God. I have a lover. “Caitlyn, you’re looking good this morning.” Caitlyn cleared her throat and forced a smile at Hale. “Thanks, so are you.” Was it her, or were the others avoiding eye contact? “Ah, yeah, Caitlyn.” Derrick coughed into his hand. “Hope you had a decent night’s rest. God knows, I was up all night,” he added under his breath. Hale glared at Derrick, and Caitlyn knew she was floating above
the undercurrents in the room. “So, what do you make of all this?” Zack asked her. “We volunteered for this crap. How did you fall into it?” “My father. He was a soldier, fed the usual vaccines -- that weren’t all that usual. Apparently, his genetics were altered enough that when I was conceived, I turned out a bit, well, different, according to Doc.” “Man. Project Dawn started way before us. Who knew?” Ace asked. When he met Caitlyn’s gaze, he flushed. “I, ah, we haven’t talked much. I hope you’re enjoying your stay.” He turned even redder. “This has to be hard for you.” Derrick choked. “Hell. I mean, if there’s anything you need, we’re here to help.” “I’ll say.” Derrick laughed hard, clutching his stomach. “Nice, Ace.” Zack shook his head, disgusted. “What are you three talking about?” Caitlyn stared suspiciously from Derrick to Ace. Did they know what she and Roane had done last night? If he had so much as hinted at it, she’d kill him. Heat rushed into her cheeks. “Ignore them, Caitlyn. Derrick’s an ass, and Ace has no idea how to talk to women,” Hale said with amusement. “Just ask Kelly.” Ace opened his mouth to respond, caught Caitlyn’s look, and shut it.
She couldn’t help laughing. “This is like The Three Stooges, plus one.” “I couldn’t have said that better myself,” Doc said as he stepped into the room. He nodded at everyone. “Where’s Roane?” “Right here.” Roane stepped into the room, his shirt and shorts plastered to his battle-honed body, his hair wet, and his feet clad in flip-flops. Very beach bum, and so out of character for a male who looked like a recruitment poster for the Marines. “Sorry I’m late. I was waylaid by an unavoidable delay this morning.” He gave his friends a dirty look. They ignored him. “I don’t want to know why you’re late, Roane. I never do.” Doc sighed and rubbed his eyes under his glasses. “This morning I’d like to run some tests --” Groans interrupted him. Caitlyn sympathized. She’d had enough samples taken from her yesterday. But her time spent in Pearson Labs reminded her that laboratory work could be extensive and time-consuming. She’d accept it as she did back then, especially since she had more at stake now. Like her life. “Those tests will help us determine where Caitlyn falls into the Circ world we live in, gentlemen.” Caitlyn perked. “I’m all for it if you can help me figure things out. I’ve thought about it, but I still don’t understand why this PPA would want me all of a sudden after the lab kicked me out three years ago. It makes no sense.” “It does if you’re finally maturing into a full-blown Circ,” Doc
explained. “You’re not atypical, Caitlyn. From what I’ve been observing, the males tend to mature faster than the females. Of course, it may be due to the regimen the males are exposed to, whereas the females are taken by the virus early on.” “Explain that, Doc,” Roane said. Caitlyn studied him. God, he looked even better this morning than he had…an hour ago? She blushed, recalling too easily how he felt under her hands. What a body. And more impressive, he knew what to do with it. She felt Hale watching her and ignored him, not wanting to see what was probably a knowing grin. Oh hell, they probably all knew where Roane had spent his night. Great, she was the squad “ho.” Maybe she should tell Doc that, to let him know where she fit into the Circ world. “Of the viable Circ females I’ve observed --” “You’re telling me there are other female Circs out there?” Ace demanded. “Technically, they’re Circs, but physiologically, they’re still normal females. They’ve never changed, never experienced the mating heat.” “Then how do you know they’re Circs?” Caitlyn asked. Doc paused, studied Caitlyn, and nodded. “Come here.” She slowly approached, feeling all eyes on her. “Go change into this, please.” Doc handed her an overlarge shirt, one that looked like it would have dwarfed Roane. Doc leaned closer. “Only wear the shirt, nothing else. Trust me,
you’ll understand before we’re done.” Though she had no idea what he was after, she changed in the bathroom adjoining the room and returned feeling like a kid playing dress up. The shirt draped off her shoulder and exposed the slope of her breast if she wasn’t careful. Caitlyn felt ultra-aware that she wore nothing but a thin layer of cotton protecting her from the five tough, battle-ready males surrounding her. “Nice threads,” Hale said with appreciation. “You look damned good in white, Caitlyn.” Derrick nodded. “Damned good.” “My new favorite color,” Ace murmured, and even Zack seemed taken by the stupid shirt she wore. Caitlyn took a subtle whiff, but couldn’t detect a trace of any scent or reason for them to be so enthralled by what she was wearing. She snuck a glance at Roane and hurriedly turned back to Doc, the only safe male in the room. Roane looked as if he wanted to eat her, which brought back last night in vivid detail. “You’re definitely Circ.” Doc nodded at the men. “They can sense it, and you know it, even if you don’t yet understand what that means. Before yesterday, had you ever changed?” “No.” She still didn’t understand what she’d “changed” into, or why the feeling that she was now more lingered under her skin. “Why were you at Pearson Labs in the first place, Caitlyn?” Doc knew the answers to these questions; she’d told him earlier. He obviously wanted her to share it with the others.
Their gazes didn’t waver from her. The intensity of their interest would have had her running for the door had Roane not been there, too. He provided a measure of comfort, whether he knew it or not. She instinctively knew to turn to him should she need aid. “I used to go to the labs for monthly checkups. I was never sick, but my parents told me I’d had an unusual development following my birth that made it necessary to constantly monitor my health.” “What development?” Doc asked. “I don’t know. They never really explained why, and I went because they asked me to. It was no big deal. Blood samples, a strand of hair, a fingernail clipping. The labs took harmless pieces of me. Then they’d give me a shot each visit, to boost my immunity, they said. Nothing too hard to swallow.” Roane honed in on her mouth. Not a great choice of words, Caitlyn. She nervously continued. “When I hit puberty, my body changed.” “No kidding,” Hale murmured. Roane scowled. “You mean more than physically,” Doc added and faced the others. “Elliot made sure Caitlyn received a monthly dose of the Circe toxin for the first twelve years of her life. The gradual exposure to the virus in small quantities, in addition to the genetic manipulation from her father, helped her body overcome the resistance so many other Circs later fell to.
Caitlyn is a one hundred percent, fully functioning Circ. “I’m guessing Elliot and his team found something in your blood, something they can use. You hadn’t changed until now, so whatever they found is recent. I’d love to know what made them come after you.” “So would I,” Roane said in a low voice. “What happened to you on the beach that day, Caitlyn? When we spotted Dunn and Hoff near you, we knew we had to act fast.” “Who?” “The PPA? Simon Dunn and Vincent Hoff. The assholes who met you on the beach.” She swallowed and crossed her arms nervously over her chest. “I’ve been, or at least, I was sick for a while. I’d come to the beach to relax, to take some time and think.” “Sick?” Roane looked her over from top to bottom and inhaled. “You’re fine.” “Now. I’ve been getting really bad headaches for months. Joint pain, fevers, chills. Nothing a doctor could explain, but pain that would put me down for days. I didn’t know what was wrong with me.” “Your body was preparing for its first change,” Doc said, as excited today as he had been yesterday when she’d explained her symptoms. “I guess. All I know is that Simon and Vincent threatened me on the beach. They were going to tag me, they said.”
“Bastards,” Derrick growled. “I thought they meant beach tags.” She laughed nervously. “They said a few things…” “What?” Roane asked, his voice hard. “I’m not going to repeat what they said.” Her face felt on fire, and she shifted uncomfortably. “But they weren’t nice. When they touched me, when I smelled them, I wanted to vomit. They smelled wrong. Evil. And the things they wanted to do scared me to death.” Roane clenched his fists. To her surprise, the rest of the team looked equally angered. On her behalf? “How did you escape?” Doc prodded her to continue. “I did what I used to be able to do, before the ability vanished a few years ago. I released my scent into the air. It’s like a heady perfume that goes straight to your head. It only affects males that I know of.” “Show us,” Doc ordered. “Doc, that might not be a good idea,” Roane said. “We need to see what Caitlyn can do, how you react to her. I’m trusting that you’ll all control yourselves,” he warned and tapped a small tray next to him. On it lay what looked to Caitlyn like a small, metallic gun. “No one will hurt you, Caitlyn. But if any of these guys get out of hand, as sometimes happens during testing, a small tranquilizer will even the playing field.
“I’m trying to illustrate to you all how Caitlyn and the other females are different. Go ahead, Caitlyn. Release your scent. Just a small bit, mind you.” That Doc had dealt with the men when they were out of control shouldn’t have surprised her. Still, comparing his slighter frame to all five behemoths in the room, she credited his preparedness when dealing with the men. At least she wouldn’t need to fear a mass rape if she overshot the mark. She released a small bit of scent into the air. As one, the men stilled and took a step in her direction. Even Doc had to shake his head. He had to clear his throat to ask in an audible voice. “That’s a small bit?” “Yeah. I hit Vincent and Simon with more than that. A lot more, actually, when they tried to kidnap me.” “Oh man.” Zack licked his lips. She would have had to be blind to miss the physical reactions in the men around her. Every one of them was flushed and glassy-eyed and definitely aroused. They looked as if she’d blasted them with her entire arsenal. “Not a good idea, Doc,” Ace added. His arms rippled, and he grew in front of her, several inches wider and taller. He split his shirt and his shoes. “Oh, wow.” Caitlyn hadn’t seen them change before. It was like looking at a giant predator on two legs. Ace looked beastlike, with darker, harder skin, claws, and fangs to complete the
package. His features broadened, roughened, but still looked enough like Ace to see that he was the same man. He stood at least two feet taller than her own five-seven. Then he released his own scent… “Enough,” Roane roared and stepped in front of Caitlyn, so close, she could lean forward and touch him. “change back. Now!” Ace growled. Roane spoke again in a low voice. “Kelly’s just a few rooms away.” Ace shook his head, growled and groaned, but eventually shifted back into his normal form. “Good Christ, Doc. If she can do that with a little bit, she could take us out if she really wanted to.” Hale wiped his forehead and took several deep breaths. “That’s the change?” she asked in a thick voice. “Ace looked like something out of a comic book. Like a bronzed Hulk, but scarier.” “The claws and fangs were designed with defense in mind,” Doc rasped. “Goodness, Caitlyn. I hadn’t realized how potent you are.” “It never used to work this well,” she admitted. “Must be your maturation into a true Circ that’s amped your potential, then. Very impressive.” She noticed the men had yet to relax and still circled her. Roane refused to budge. When she tried to push him aside, he hissed at her, “Dammit.
Don’t touch me now. Not unless you want to be flat on your back with an audience.” “Roane.” She flushed and backed away. “Doc, what did you want me to prove with that demonstration? And why the hell am I wearing this nightshirt?” The fact she wore nothing beneath couldn’t be helping. “So that you’ll be covered when you change.” “When I change? You’re going to teach me to control it, right?” She had partially shifted yesterday, recalling her large arm, that foreign hand that was hers and yet not. “I wanted everyone to see your differences before they see you again in your other state.” Doc sounded like himself again, though his face was pinker than usual. He said to the group, “The few female Circs I know of were either born Circ or injected with the Circe serum at an early age. Caitlyn has abilities you five don’t. Since I’m not privy to Pearson’s files on her, I can only conjecture. I assume that because the virus was passed down from one generation to the next, it had time to adapt. Caitlyn never experienced psychological jags, did you, dear?” “Um, no.” “No overwhelming need to harm another? To fulfill your base desires?” “No. Well, not until recently.” Embarrassed to admit it, she reminded herself that she was in a laboratory. Doc needed to know everything, so he could help her. “You mentioned yesterday that I’d already fully changed. I don’t remember it. And I don’t understand this mating heat you’re talking about. But I’ve felt more, ah, more…”
“Horny?” Hale offered. “Hale,” Roane warned. “Yeah.” She blew out a breath. “Actually, it comes and goes. Last night…” She paused and watched Roane tense in front of her. “Last night, Roane said I called him. But I didn’t realize I had.” “She didn’t call me,” Derrick muttered. “Me either.” Hale sighed. Doc stared from Roane to Caitlyn. “Interesting. Roane, what did you sense?” Roane rolled his neck on his shoulders and allowed her to stand by his side, but he refused to put more than a few inches between them. “I was going to go to bed early.” The others voiced their disbelief. “I swear. I was almost to my door when I felt a sudden instinctual urge to go to her. Then I caught her scent.” His eyes darkened, from brown to black. “I thought for sure the rest of you would be on her.” On me? What the hell? From the looks on the others’ faces, Roane was suggesting they all wanted to, what, fuck her? “Instead, I found her with Kelly. She never changed, just sent out that sweet fucking perfume.” “And then?” Doc just had to ask. “And then we spent the night together. Just her and me. Mine.” Roane ended on a growl.
“I knew she was going to be trouble,” Derrick said. “Just knew it.” “But it wasn’t a mating heat, and none of the rest of you experienced this need?” Doc asked and began typing madly into a nearby computer. “This suggests Caitlyn actively sought out one of you. Not a mating heat. A selection.” “What exactly is this ‘mating heat’?” She wanted to know, trying hard to overcome her embarrassment. Now it was out in the open. Everyone knew what she’d done -- who she’d done -- last night. Strangely, talking about all this sex was revving her engines again. She clenched her arms tightly across her chest, hiding her erect nipples. “The mating heat is a hormonal call to procreate. Both genders of Circs experience it monthly or bimonthly. The squad shouldn’t have gone through their next heat for another two weeks, at least. But yesterday, you pushed them into one.” “I did?” “Yes, you did.” Doc turned from the computer. “Doc,” Roane started. “No, Roane. She has a right to know.” Doc faced Caitlyn. “My dear, I expect this is perfectly normal at your particular stage in growth. Nothing to be concerned or embarrassed about.” “I did something yesterday I can’t remember, didn’t I?” “You sure did,” Derrick said under his breath. “And I hope you’ll do it again.” “Tell us what happened when you escaped from the PPA
agents.” Thrown by the change in subject, Caitlyn reluctantly told them. “I turned my scent on them full blast. Simon stepped away, and I took my chance. I suddenly had a burst of speed and strength, and I ran faster than I ever have in my life down the street. I tried to lose them by heading toward the outdoor mall. That’s when I ran into you guys.” She took a deep breath. “I remember being afraid, feeling overwhelmed. And then nothing.” Not nothing. As she stood there, something within her woke. A slumbering consciousness, an instinctive part of her that both soothed and frightened her. Its power was enormous and familiar. She saw herself swiping at Roane, clawing at his chest and arms with inhuman hands. Felt herself carried into the vehicle. Then nothing until she saw Roane again, a perfect beast in his prime. He chased her, he caught her, and then… “You.” She gasped and stared at Roane. “You took me, there in that yard.” “I sure as hell did.” He didn’t try to deny it, startling her. “You were beautiful, baby. So dark, so strong.” His breath grew raspy. “So mine.” Like that, the rest of her memories rushed back. Of having raw sex with Derrick and Hale, of swallowing Roane, that perfect essence that satisfied her need to mate. The strongest, the best. She needed Roane. The others she would take to remind him that she could. But he would be the one she ultimately chose. “What’s happening to me?” Caitlyn groaned as lust swamped
reason. Her bones and joints ached. Unlike yesterday, she wasn’t flashing in and out of another form. Now she experienced a full-body transformation. It didn’t feel good. It damn well hurt. Caitlyn roared her displeasure until she shed the weak flesh and bone holding her back. Her body filled out, her face lengthened in proportion to the growth around the rest of her skull. Her shoulders held up the shirt now binding her breasts, rubbing against the engorged nipples, needing freedom. The entirety of her system became something more as she blinked and stared at four males she planned to work through before savoring the fifth. The one who belonged to her.
Chapter Seven
“Now, Caitlyn, I want you to stay calm.” The look Caitlyn gave Doc shut the scientist up in a heartbeat. The six of them stood there, not sure how to proceed. Roane wanted to engage the light of challenge in Caitlyn’s glowing green eyes. When a normal woman, she attracted him. Soft, tanned skin, long, golden hair that curled around her face and caressed the tips of her breasts, and legs that wouldn’t quit. changed, she was an impossible temptation. One needing immediate attention. Caitlyn, however, didn’t seem amenable to what he had in mind. He wanted to shake her until her teeth rattled when she gazed with calculation over his men. It wouldn’t take much to send the rest of them over the edge. He fought changing , and he could see the others working against the urge as well. “Zack, Ace, why don’t you two escort Doc out of here and check on Kelly.” Roane’s words came out in a thick growl. Fangs cut through his gums, painful reminders of just what he leashed with that practiced control. Ace, for once, didn’t hesitate to follow Roane’s orders. He grabbed one of Doc’s arms and Zack grabbed the other. As they dragged the protesting scientist to the door, Derrick moved to follow. “But Roane, think of the potential research this could give us,” Doc said. Caitlyn snarled, showcasing sharp white teeth. She maintained eye contact with Roane, not blinking, just waiting.
“I’ll let you know what you missed,” Hale added quietly, his voice no less husky than Roane’s. “Don’t worry, Doc. I’ll make sure they don’t kill each other. I’ll give you an impartial view on what’s what. Derrick, since you’re outta here, disable the cameras, would you?” “That woman is trouble.” Derrick nodded at Caitlyn. “First-class, sexy-as-a-motherfucker trouble I don’t need,” he muttered. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure Doc’s peep show is limited to Zack and Ace.” “Dick.” Ace punched Derrick, who shrugged off the blow. “Peep show, indeed.” Doc’s scowl was a clear testament to his affront. “Funny, Derrick.” Zack followed the others out the door. “Come on. You can make sure Ace and I don’t do anything to irritate Kelly again. Our new Circ has my libido in an uproar, and I don’t want to take out that frustration on Kelly. Since Ace hardly ever willingly gives it up…” “Willingly, my ass,” Ace barked. “That’s my point,” Zack continued. His voice faded as the door shut behind him. The metallic shutter of a lock sounded loudly in the sudden silence -- a reminder that Caitlyn wasn’t free to go. She snarled and leaped into the middle of the room next to the exam bed. “Reminds me of our introduction at the beach,” Roane said, feeling the heat behind his gaze signaling an imminent change. “But this meeting’s going to end a lot differently.” He slowly stepped out of his clothes, his eyes on Caitlyn the entire time. e
She grumbled as he undressed but did nothing to stop him. Her nipples pebbled visibly under the thin shirt she wore. It clung to her larger, curvier frame. Her wildness beckoned his forth. Flowing into the stronger, baser part of him -- his beast -- he eagerly embraced his size, once again dominant over his female. “Shit. I knew I shouldn’t have worn any shoes this morning.” Hale sighed and stepped out of his sandals. He tossed off his shirt and changed, his eyes like pinpoints of gold. His stare vacillated between Roane and Caitlyn. He’d caught Caitlyn’s attention, and Roane didn’t like that. “He’s pretty.” Her voice had deepened to a husky pitch. “He’s not your concern. I am.” Roane stepped directly in front of her, blocking her view of Hale. She growled low in her throat. “I’ll get to you when I’m good and ready. You don’t own me.” The glint in her gaze warned him to tread warily. He clenched his fists tight, not even pretending to go along with her bullshit. Hale chuckled, ceasing when Roane turned a lethal glare his way. Caitlyn, he noted, waited, her challenge issued. More than happy to give her the fight she wanted, Roane stepped forward…right into her fist. Caitlyn belted him in the face faster than he’d have thought possible. With his enhanced bone structure and toughened skin, the assault did no more than irritate him. “I like this.” She cracked her knuckles. “More power. More
strength. Time to take what I want.” She dismissed Roane with a shake of her head. In the next breath, Roane had her in his arms and ripped the shirt from her body. “Time to learn who’s in charge here, you damned hellcat.” He cupped her breasts, squeezing and pinching her nipples as she tried to struggle. The scent of feminine arousal filled the air around them. She gasped and squirmed, and the wild smell intensified, pleasing him. “You belong to me. You do what I say.” “Are you strong enough to keep me? I don’t think so. Let me go.” Her breathy plea and fingers kneading his chest contradicted her words. It was telling that she had yet to use her claws on him. Hale took a step forward. “Back off, Hale. She’s mine.” Roane uttered the warning in a low snarl. “You want to play, Caitlyn? Then we play by my rules.” He carried her to the exam bed and bent her over it, spreading her ankles wide. Her ass waved in the air, an invitation if he’d ever seen one. He angled his hips and prodded her pussy with his cock, hissing at the warm wetness pooling there. “Show Hale how you take me all the way in, hellcat. Show him how much you want me.” She gasped and rubbed against him, the friction testing his control, but she refused to admit her desire aloud.
“You don’t want me?” Roane shoved full length into her and stilled. “Are you sure?” She moaned his name, clawing at the table as she arched back into him. “You want me to leave you?” he asked in a thick voice and pulled out. “No,” she whimpered. “I need more.” “Beg me for it.” He reached around her hip and fingered her clit, sliding through the cream gathered just for him. “Never…beg.” “We’ve done this already, remember?” Roane pressed his cock against her ass as he played with her, determined to melt her resistance. He locked gazes with Hale, forcing the male to acknowledge Roane’s place with his female. Hale licked his lips and nodded, focused on them. “Tell Hale how much you need me.” Caitlyn tried to move away from Roane. Her attempts were halfhearted at best, and she continued to exude an arousing scent. Unable to resist her, Roane thrust inside her once more. “Fuck, Caitlyn. You don’t like the word ‘no,’ do you?” He began pumping, taken with her hot pussy, with the feel and scent of her. “So good.” “Yes,” she hissed, rubbing against him. “More. Deeper.”
“Like this?” He slammed into her, and she cried out. Riding her hard, more than aware Hale watched their every move, he dragged the pad of his finger over her clit. Large and ripe, she felt slick with desire. Pushing with more pressure while he fucked her, he deliberately released his own scent and had a wildcat on his hands. Caitlyn cried out and scratched at the bed, his thighs, whatever she could reach as she climbed toward orgasm. Roane wanted nothing more than to come inside her, but he needed to teach her a lesson. The female had to know her place. He forced himself to withdraw. “No,” she groaned. “Who’s in charge?” “Roane, I’m not done yet,” she hissed, fighting for the freedom to take him inside her once more. “Neither am I.” He teased her entrance, aware of how precariously he balanced on the edge of ecstasy. “Answer me, dammit.” “Fuck me.” She tried again to engage his body with her own. Roane shoved her flat against the bed, his body flush with hers. The contact put his groin and her ass in direct alignment. “Who’s in charge, hellcat?” He pushed between her cheeks, fully intending to ass fuck her as soon as they’d settled their differences. “I can wait as long as I need to,” he rasped, nipping at her neck.
Caitlyn shivered. Hale groaned in the background, drawing Roane’s attention. The Circ dropped his shorts and stroked himself, lost in the sex clouding the room. Roane felt for him, totally caught up in Caitlyn’s body. She bucked and fought, but couldn’t shake him. The fury vibrating along her frame slowly soothed into a submissive acceptance, what he’d been waiting for all along. The beast within roared its satisfaction. The man accepted her as his due. No question. “Please, Roane,” Caitlyn whimpered. “Take me. You’re in charge.” “And?” He withdrew his tip from her ass and positioned his cock at her pussy, where it belonged. “I’m yours,” she whispered in a gritty voice. Roane slammed inside her once more, groaning at the perfection of their fit. “Oh, yes!” Caitlyn stretched under him, and he lost it. His female. His seed ready to take root. Thoughts of impregnating her increased his ardor. Roane fucked her without mercy, riding his woman until she shattered around him. Still he continued until he crested his limits, stirring her again, despite her protests. “Mine,” he bellowed as he jetted inside her. He gouged her hips, marking her with his touch and scent, the smell of blood and cum furthering his climax. He glanced up to see Hale close to losing it. “Come here,” he
said to his friend. “Caitlyn, open your mouth. You’re going to reward Hale for knowing the truth when he sees it. Suck him until I tell you to stop. I’m far from done with you.” Hale approached, and Roane pushed Caitlyn farther over the bed, careful to keep connected to her. Though he’d just spent, he was still hard, his beast’s appetite far from satisfied. She’d surrendered her will, but she had more yet to give. “Wait,” Roane ordered. Hale shook as he stood with his cock at Caitlyn’s lips. Caitlyn breathed over him, and he groaned. Roane coated his finger in the cum sliding down her leg. He was still inside her, but he wanted more. Pushing his finger between her ass cheeks, he penetrated her anus. The tight fit increased his arousal. “Now fuck her mouth,” he ordered Hale, dominance throbbing inside him. Hale pushed, and she took him, accepting Roane as well. He could sense her discomfort, but she didn’t refuse him. Stretching her with one finger and then two, Roane let Caitlyn get used to him, her transformed body much easier to train. When changed, he himself had experienced anal sex with little pain. The last thing he thought he’d ever want, but when Hale had taken him, he’d felt actual pleasure in the act. Still, it was nothing close to what he felt with Caitlyn. Now he’d get to show her what it felt like to be filled at both ends. He removed his fingers from her ass. Hale panted as he fucked her, his eyes glued to Roane’s as
Roane withdrew from her pussy and penetrated her ass. She moaned around Hale’s cock as Roane invaded the tight space. His shaft slid easily, drenched in her cum and his natural lubricant. “So damned tight,” he said, doing his best to remain still, to let her grow accustomed to the feel of him. “That’s it,” Hale growled. “Take her ass and make it yours. Like when I bent you over last time and fucked you, Roane. The way I possessed that flesh, made you come all over Zack and Ace while Derrick shot all over you. Together we’re joined. But never like this,” he hissed as he tensed. “Never this fucking good,” he moaned and shot inside Caitlyn’s mouth. Roane watched his best friend pull out slowly, his cock glistening before pushing back in. The sight and scent of him over Caitlyn surprisingly added to his arousal. “Yeah, that’s it.” Roane squeezed her cheeks, making her grip him even tighter. He pounded into her, no longer able to go slow. “I’m going to cover you with my seed, baby. All of me,” he groaned as he came. His orgasm was so intense, he couldn’t stand it. He quickly pulled out, only to continue to come all over her back. When he finally stopped, he noticed Hale had pulled out of Caitlyn and watched her take Roane to heaven. Once finished, Roane leaned over her, cementing their bodies with mingled fluids and scents. “Mine,” he said again, quietly, relishing the sight of their strength, his larger frame dominating hers. “Yours,” Caitlyn acknowledged, her voice husky.
“Yours,” Hale agreed. “That’s some bond,” he said with a grin, showcasing sharp teeth. “Too bad the others missed it.” “God, don’t talk about it,” Caitlyn said tiredly, changing back. “I can’t believe I just did that. A freakin’ ménage. I feel sensitive all over.” Hale left and returned a moment later cleaned up, but still in his altered, animalistic state. He fairly hummed with energy, and Roane knew their encounter wasn’t over yet. Hale threw him a warm, soapy washcloth, which he used on both Caitlyn and himself before discarding it. He kissed Caitlyn’s shoulder, gliding his lips over a healing scratch. Satisfied when it continued to knit, he gently turned Caitlyn onto her back. Her sensual shiver pleased him, and he cupped both breasts, taken by the hardened nipples. “Not enough yet, hmm?” “Roane, what --” She gasped as Roane knelt between her legs and licked her. In this form, his keen senses detected the very essence that made Caitlyn his. The sweet scent, the honeyed taste of her, went straight to his head. He sucked hard on her clit, causing her to spasm into another climax. “She’s hungry.” Roane grinned. Hale nodded. “She’ll make a good breeder.” They both froze, and Hale swore. “I’m not sure where that came from, but my beast seems to like the idea.” Roane gave her one last lick and stood. “Yeah. Mine, too.” He
rubbed her soft belly, enthralled by the contrasts in their skin. He caught her in his arms when she faltered. “I can’t get that image out of my head. The one where she’s round with my child. It doesn’t make any sense, but it gets me harder than a rock. I just fucking came, and I want to do it again until she’s carrying.” Hale inhaled sharply. “Shit, stop talking about it.” He reached down to cup his balls tightening under a thickening shaft. “Yeah, stop talking about me being pregnant,” Caitlyn said. “It’s enough I turn into some she-beast. I don’t think I’m ready for kids yet.” Roane stroked her tanned abs, then ran his large hand over her mound and between her folds. He caressed her clit, stirring her anew. “Not again,” she moaned. “You like playing games. See how much fun we can have playing?” Roane asked, reminding her who made the rules. He still didn’t like that she’d looked at Hale earlier. She followed his gaze to Hale and flushed. “I didn’t really want to have sex with Hale. No offense.” “None taken.” Hale smiled and licked his lips. “I mean, the lusty part of me did, but I wanted you,” she directed to Roane. “I mean… Hell. This doesn’t make any sense. It’s like I was possessed or something. I wanted to see how you’d react if I came on to Hale.
Not that Hale’s hard to look at,” she amended and winked at his friend. Roane shoved a finger inside her. “I know, I know.” Caitlyn gasped and closed her eyes, as if unwillingly drawn under his spell again. “I’m yours. I get it. I was just teasing.” “Tease me anytime, honey.” Hale stroked his arousal once more. “Cut it out, Hale.” Roane scowled. “See how bossy he is? But he’s not so hard to deal with, if you know how to handle him.” Roane withdrew his finger from Caitlyn and wiped it on his belly, her scent mingled with his. “Keep pushing, Hale.” The beast in him sensed another challenge, one he’d mastered before. The scent of familiar need emanated from Hale, shocking Roane that he hadn’t felt the same urge. “Want me to show her how it is?” Hale asked and approached. He ran a hand over Caitlyn’s legs, cupping her mound as if he owned it. Caitlyn groaned and spread her thighs wider. “Don’t you remember the pecking order?” Roane asked, rage building, adding to the lust wafting from Hale’s glands. Another mating heat, right after Roane had claimed Caitlyn? Quick as lightning, Hale shoved Roane away from Caitlyn and pushed him up against the wall. “Strongest wins the prize.” The jackass was the fastest of them in his beastly form. They all knew it.
Roane understood what Hale wanted: to mount Roane in front of Caitlyn. To show her his strength and steal the female out from under him with a show of dominance. “Fuck, no.” Roane flashed sharp teeth. “You think you can take her from me?” “I can’t help this, and you fucking know it.” Hale panted, his dick pressed between his belly and Roane’s. “You have to reform our bonds. I know she’s yours, but so am I. Not yet mated. Another heat.” Hale groaned. “I should be satisfied by her perfect mouth, but you two pushed me into this.” Roane battled his resurging desire as he glanced from Hale to Caitlyn. She sat up and watched with curiosity and desire in those deep green eyes. At least she isn’t repelled by this bond. This unceasing lust that’s making me ache. “I think you need to mark him the way you did me,” she offered quietly. “He needs to feel that same connection, right?” She glanced at Hale, who nodded. Roane wanted to be disgusted by it. Hell, he’d just had sex with Caitlyn, the woman he knew to be his. But she didn’t seem put off by Hale’s need. Quite the opposite. She seemed turned on again. “Come on, do it.” Hale growled and nipped at Roane’s neck. Roane reacted. He shoved Hale back, then flipped him to the ground on his hands and knees. He felt Caitlyn’s gaze on him like a caress while he prodded Hale’s hole. Like a switch, Roane went from flagging to erect again. He surged deep in one push and hissed at the pleasure of Hale’s ass gloving him so tightly.
Wrapped in sensation, he didn’t hear his woman move. “That’s nice.” Caitlyn purred in his ear, wrapping her arms around his chest as he pounded into Hale. “Take him hard,” she prodded and bit his earlobe, her soft breasts pressed into his back. Blood pooled in his groin. Roane groaned as he took Hale, Caitlyn’s encouragement spurring him to finish quickly. When she circled to Hale and reached under him, grabbing his cock, Roane’s excitement boiled over. Two alphas sating his beta. The way it should be, taking care of his friend and partner. Hale praised them both as he cried out his climax. He came over Caitlyn’s hand while she watched Roane pumping in and out of his ass. Roane felt the ecstasy rushing from the base of his spine through his balls, like a fiery blast of pleasure that overwhelmed him. He moaned his relief as he came hard, marking Hale with his scent and his seed. As he regained his senses, Roane pondered the notion that he hadn’t experienced Hale’s same need. Unlike the other times where he’d felt compelled to fuck one of his own squad -- for God’s sake -- Caitlyn had finished him herself. This joining with Hale had been for Hale’s sake. And to be honest, knowing Caitlyn wanted him to fuck Hale, that she watched, turned him on to the idea more than he might have thought possible. Hale hissed as Roane withdrew. Hale made it to his knees, one huge mess of claw marks and cum. Caitlyn kissed him on the cheek and rubbed her hand through his own seed on his belly, making him flush. “That was really sexy,” she said before leaving them both for the small adjoining bathroom.
Their heavy breathing filled the sudden silence left in her wake. “Tell me I didn’t just ask you to fuck me in front of a woman.” Hale moaned. “I’m seriously losing it.” “I think she liked it.” Roane coughed to cover his sudden discomfort. “Dammit, you had another mating heat. What did you expect?” “I expected I’d want her to satisfy me, not you,” Hale said with a dry laugh. “She’s a sexual goddess with that mouth. You? You’re not that sexy.” “Fuck you.” “You just did.” Hale ran a hand over his face. “No need to share this with the others, all right? Just Doc.” “You don’t need to tell me twice.” Roane grimaced but saw the humor in the situation. “So, you think I’m sexier than Caitlyn, hmm?” “Dammit.” After using Caitlyn’s ruined shirt to clean up, Hale slowly dressed. “Look, from now on, keep sex with your woman private. Don’t get me wrong. Big thanks for that mind-blowing orgasm Caitlyn gave me. But I could have done without that heat you two pushed me into. My beast didn’t want someone new. It wanted you, what was familiar.” paused. “Which could be good, if you think about it. I recognized Caitlyn as yours. If not, we would have had to fight. And I would have had to kick your ass in front of her, embarrassing you.” “You wish.” Hale clapped him on the shoulder. “After I talk to Doc, I’m
blowing the compound. I need to find a good woman and get laid a few more times tonight. As a man. Not as my beast,” he added with disgust before leaving the lab. “Good luck.” Roane understood Hale’s need to get away. If not for Caitlyn, he’d have done the same. Anything to wipe out the odd attraction for men he considered friends and family. Though he admitted to the heady pleasure when taking Hale, it still lacked that something special he’d found in Caitlyn. God willing, he could avoid a repeat of a mating heat with Derrick, Ace, and Zack. Like Hale advised, he’d stay away from the others when he and Caitlyn had sex. So long as they respected this boundary, life would be good. Caitlyn was his. No question, no discussion. He didn’t worry so much about Zack and Ace, not with Kelly around. But Derrick worried him. Caitlyn emerged clean from the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. “That’s two showers today.” She glanced away from him, a blush darkening her cheeks. “It’s okay, hellcat,” Roane teased and took her in his arms. “This is the way we’re made. Accept this new you. Between me, the squad, and Doc, we’ll make it all right.” She slowly raised her gaze to meet his. “I trust you, Roane. I don’t know why, but I do.” She sighed and rested her head on his chest. “This is all so weird. I just had sex with two men at the same time. Then I jacked Hale off while you were doing him. That I just said that at all is crazy. Even weirder is that it felt right.”
“It’s strange and embarrassing, and yet, it makes sense. I understand what you’re feeling. Trust me on that.” He hugged her tight. “I guess I’m not going back to my old life, am I?” “No,” he said softly, wanting to make this transition as easy on her as possible. “Then let’s get Doc back in here so he can teach me how to control my change.” “I’ll help you.” I’ll always help you, baby. You’re mine now. “I know, but you can’t constantly be around me. I can only hide at the compound for so long. If I run into Simon or Vincent again, I need to be prepared.” Roane tensed. “Don’t worry. The next time you see those dickheads, I plan to be by your side. I’ll tear their heads from their spindly necks if they so much as breathe in your direction.” Caitlyn relaxed and chuckled. “My hero.” Hellcat, you have no idea. Because Hoff and Dunn are going to pay for what they did to you. And I’m going to be the one collecting what you’re owed.
Chapter Eight
Simon Dunn itched to plant a bullet between his boss’s eyes. How the fuck this geek kept Pearson Labs running at all boggled the mind. Spindly, absentminded, and six inches shorter than his own six-four, the boss looked like a bad version of a mad scientist gone wrong. “Tell me again why we’re not going after her.” “Because you already did what I wanted you to do,” Dr. Elliot Pearl replied in a calm voice that furthered Simon’s irritation. “Since you claim she successfully controlled you with her scent before you shot her, there’s no doubt she’s where she needs to be right now.” “Doc, you’re seriously losing me. Why the hell did you ask us to tag her if we weren’t going to bring her in? You do realize the Squad has her right now?” Probably fucking the shit out of that piece of ass, too. Caitlyn Chase had an hourglass shape, full tits, and a pussy made for screwing. He’d been so close… “You’ve done your job, Agent Dunn. Now leave us.” He nodded to a shadowy figure near the doorway. Not much disturbed him, but Simon refused to be around that giant freak unless he had to. Dealing with Vincent was preferable to that monster. Maybe he’d fool around with the newest acquisitions on the lower level, the ones Pearl thought no one knew about. His cock twitched with approval, and he left without a backward glance. “McKinley, find Torrence for me.” Elliot scribbled in his notebook and turned to the computer. Not a sound was made, but Elliot suddenly felt alone. Finally.
He contemplated the file he’d been working on for the past twenty-eight years. The key to all his hard work: Caitlyn Chase. He’d been impressed by her father, Lieutenant Brendan Chase, from the moment they’d met. Hence, a standard physical for the young soldier had turned into so much more. Brendan was an all-American: intelligent, athletic, with the drive and skill to become a commanding general had he lived long enough. His wife, Colleen, had been as charismatic and talented, with a beauty that took his breath away. She and Brendan had created a wonderful child in their son, Robert. Wonderful, but average. Normal. When Colleen gave birth to Caitlyn, however, they’d achieved perfection. The boy hadn’t shown any signs of effect from the Circe serum, or EP12, as Elliot liked to call it. Probably because when he’d been conceived, Brendan and Colleen hadn’t accepted a high enough dose to fully mutate their DNA. Three more years of medical experimentation had proven that Brendan had what it took. EP12 liked his genes, so much so that they turned Brendan into a fighting machine and made his daughter into something else. The beginning of a new era. Colleen Chase showed little change that Elliot could see. Though he’d found Colleen attractive, Elliot had never been able to determine if her appeal to the opposite sex was enhanced by the serum or was a result of her natural genetics. Brendan showed superior strength and agility thanks to EP12, but he hadn’t gained the intuitive foresight that continued to save Circe’s Recruits time and time again. Certainly the stalwart lieutenant had misread the situation when his car had been
forced off that cliff, killing him, his wife, and his son. “You wanted me?” Sabrina Torrence’s stiff posture told him she hadn’t appreciated being disturbed. “I need you to run more tests on the blood samples I gave you this morning.” “I’m in the middle of another project.” “This is more important. From what you’ve reported, our subject --” “I already told you. Her results match the toxin levels in Caitlyn Chase’s sample.” Elliot frowned. “That can’t be right.” “It is. I’ll run the test again, but be prepared for the same results.” She left on that note. Short and to the point. Though Elliot didn’t appreciate the way Torrence talked to him, he had no fault with her scientific process. Torrence had a genius IQ and wielded it with blade-sharp precision. Once a corpsman in the Navy, she’d served her time as a mere phlebotomist. Elliot had seen the potential in her for so much more. Like a sponge, Torrence absorbed everything he put in front of her. He liked the fact that she wasn’t a doctor, but a peon without a degree or specialization other than drawing blood, which anyone could do. He sniffed, reminding himself how very
common she actually was. If she wasn’t so damned smart and vital to his new labs, he’d give her to McKinley. But Torrence knew what he needed practically before he needed it -- with the exception of those damned blood tests today. He’d be foolish to let her go, even if she did have a tendency to forget her place in the organization. Not to mention she ran her section of the lab with an efficiency that put all the others -- those with doctorates and advanced degrees -- to shame. He had half a mind to put her in charge of the subbasement level, if only to see how she’d handle the unwilling patients. “Want me to correct her attitude, Dr. Pearl?” Elliot glanced up to see McKinley watching him. Those eerie yellow eyes never blinked. Elliot’s skin crawled, though he refused to show it. McKinley had been his first successful Circ after the initial batch went crazy -- with the exception of Evan’s squad. Three years ago, McKinley had appeared and protected him against the real power behind the new Project Dawn. Day in and day out, McKinley remained close by, a comforting presence when the CEO arrived, a threatening blanket when he stood in the darkness, always watching. He remained cool, in control. No psychotic episodes…yet. Which didn’t explain why Elliot never fully trusted him. Looking into those eyes was like looking into the maw of a rabid wolf. He kept waiting for those jaws to snap tight. “Thanks, but Torrence doesn’t bother me.” Not that I’d let it show if she did. “Let her get back to work. If only she’d bleed a bit of that attitude onto the others. They work at a snail’s pace.”
McKinley nodded and faded back into the shadows. Where he belonged. Elliot spent the next few hours comparing data, reviewing why they’d told Caitlyn to leave three years ago. At the time, she’d had no more to give them. Her hormonal secretions had tapered off. Her pheromones no longer worked on her command. Watching her interact in public, in another environment, should have given them more to work with. Instead, Caitlyn had become so normal. So disappointing. Dismayed that the government had disbanded Project Dawn -as if it were Elliot’s fault those idiot soldiers couldn’t process his evolutionary microbes -- he’d felt doubly betrayed by Caitlyn’s failure. Wanting to start fresh, they’d let her go and focused on his new, extremely promising subjects. Still, he didn’t remember the specifics of Caitlyn’s release, or why they hadn’t brought her in since then for an annual followup. Bemused, Elliot scrolled through his files and documents but found nothing. Rubbing the back of his neck to work out the kinks, he typed a short note to Evan. Still waiting for the other shoe to drop? How goes your progress with Caitlyn? She’s an exceptional girl. I assume her progeny will be as strong, if not stronger, than she is if she’s paired with a viable donor. Roane Weston would be my choice. Do let me know how things turn out. Grinning at the image of poking Evan with a verbal stick, Elliot sent the message.
Finished with Caitlyn’s file, he studied the next viable Circ on his list. Until Caitlyn produced young, he truly had no further need of her. Not when there were four more successes he could count on. Oh, he had plenty of other Circs to watch as well. Other failures. He couldn’t explain how, but he knew when a subject would work and when one would be a problem. Except for Caitlyn, he’d never before been wrong. Hell, he’d predicted the massive breakdowns of two-thirds of the first Recruits. The Pentagon hadn’t cared. Not until the Circs’ violent breakdowns had become public. Then Elliot had been routed as a troublemaker and wrongdoer. He huffed. If they’d let him add that genetic fail-safe, a debilitating cancer that would have killed his creations when activated, the defense department could have been spared the PR nightmare of hiding their defective Recruits. Unfortunately, they’d ignored him when they shouldn’t have and blamed him for everything. So Elliot started a new Project Dawn with the support of powerful, rich backers. He still had problems to work out. What made some subjects stable while others rejected EP12? Why couldn’t he fix the instability in his Circs once they became psychotic? Working through those issues meant allowing his troubled Circs to interact with society. A necessary evil in order to see what would set them off and how to correct them, if he could correct them. Situations often grew bloody and then Circe’s Recruits would arrive to help defuse and contain the situation. Thank you, Evan. Elliot rarely had to clean up his new messes by himself. Contrary to what Evan thought, the Project’s Protection Agency
never killed what Elliot created. They corralled. They shaped. They controlled. They obeyed. Elliot needed a force strong enough to meet the remaining Circe’s Recruits full-on, yet expendable enough to lose without harming his real treasures of the program. The subjects no one but he knew about. The four individuals who would change the course of the future. For everyone. Pleased with his vision, Elliot turned to one of his hidden cameras, locked on one of the newest Circ females breaking down. She wasn’t alone, nor was she pleased by the male on top of her. Elliot watched with interest, wondering why this one didn’t appreciate the opportunity to fornicate like the others had. Of course, Elliot had never before seen Vincent Hoff engage in such activities. Hoff liked it brutally rough, which actually fit with his personality. Usually it was Simon and a few of the other men who took advantage of the straps holding down the subjects. As if Elliot didn’t know what really happened on the subbasement floor. “McKinley, send Vincent up here when he’s done.” “Done?” “When he’s finished ejaculating into subject 29. Make sure he’s clean and presentable.” Elliot detested sloppiness, and his nose was especially sensitive to smells.
Silence. Elliot glanced at the doorframe where McKinley had been standing. “Back to the grindstone.” Elliot whistled, going over his notes and his steps leading to the Big Discovery. Then he read his secure e-mail messages, which shot his creative process all to hell. ***** Doc smiled. “I think you’ve finally got the hang of it.” After three weeks of constant practice, Caitlyn could now change at will. Though she couldn’t transform as fast as the others, she could determine how much of her body she changed, and she retained her enhanced senses when in her normal state, though to a lesser degree. If only she could control the sexual animal within her with such ease. “Nice going.” Roane nodded his approval. He stood with Derrick and Doc in one of the enclosed laboratories as they watched her press four hundred pounds over her head. “Like lifting a pillow,” she said with a growl, preening before her audience while the rational part of her wondered why she bothered. She had no need to prove herself to Derrick of all people. She had Roane’s attention already, and Doc was beside himself with enthusiasm when studying her. Derrick…he had yet to commit himself to Caitlyn, which bothered her on a fundamental level. Both her “beast” -- as the guys called it -- and the woman inside still had to work out their differences. Caitlyn accepted the intensity of lovemaking with Roane, but the voraciousness of
that need bothered her. Despite Roane’s ability to satisfy her every desire, she still fantasized about sex with some of the others. Confused and alarmed, she’d confided to Doc. ”Your beast instinctively seeks to control others with sex, hence your ability to overpower another with your pheromones,” he explained. “You’re as alpha as Roane, if you will permit the analogy. “You have to understand. Roane and his men function as a unit. Their transformation into Circe’s Recruits connects them, obviously. But it was surviving the mating heat with one another that truly brought them together.” “They bonded because of the sex?” She hoped, wanting to blame her other half for her unstable libido. “In part. It only makes sense that you would need the same physical ties to enact the emotional ones.” Doc didn’t see her “needs” as a problem. In fact, he’d advised her to talk to Roane about the situation. As if she’d go to the man who rocked her world on a daily basis and tell him she needed more when all she had to was think about Roane and she grew wet. Admit you beast is a slut, her conscience demanded as she studied Roane out of the corner of her eye. Even now, you want to throw him to the ground and grind yourself over him. “Concentrate, Caitlyn.” Roane frowned at her. “You’re becoming unbalanced.” More than you know. Try as she might, she couldn’t hold on to the pheromones that tended to waft from her when changed and around Roane for too long. Especially not with an
unclaimed male standing so close. Derrick swore and stepped away. “Blame him.” She glared at Roane, who ignored her and pulled Doc with him out of the room. Shoot. She wouldn’t be able to hear them, thanks to the soundproof lab. Caitlyn’s sudden aggression alarmed her. Shit, the beast is coming out to play again. Roane, if you don’t get your ass in here soon, I’m going to jump Derrick. Much as she tried to remain in charge, part of Caitlyn wanted to let her beast have control, to give in to the impulses she normally held at bay when changed. Frustrated, she tossed the weights to the floor and growled. Derrick shook his head. “Pull it back in, honey. You’re making it hard to think past the steel in my dick. I don’t want to see what Roane will do to me if he comes in to find me fucking you against the wall.” Caitlyn snarled, fighting her beast’s instincts. “Then get Roane back in here, now, before I take the choice from you.” Derrick took a step toward her, straining. “Fuck. Caitlyn, tone it down.” His nostrils flared. “I’ll just go get Roane, okay?” She didn’t understand what he meant until she realized the scent in the room had increased. She wanted to master Derrick, to force him to give over to her and concede his loyalty. To claim a part of the male as Roane had. Roane, her mate, the beast acknowledged with satisfaction. So why the hell did she want to fuck Derrick?
“Roane,” Derrick yelled, fisting his hands tight against the ripples along his skin. He fought the change, probably the only thing keeping them apart at this point. “Get your ass back in here, now.” Caitlyn’s beast grinned, her sharp teeth eager to mark Derrick’s smooth brown flesh. She liked the idea of him staying normal while she played with him. “Don’t change.” She shifted her scent, controlling him with it now that her beast was in charge. Panicked, she struggled against letting the wildness control her. But it was too late. Derrick groaned, caught. “Strip.” “So you’re telling me she needs to fuck my team?” Roane’s voice boomed down the hallway. “It’s not that simple. Caitlyn’s going through a rough period. I believe she’s already bonded with you, Roane. But you’re in a dominant position, and your mate is as alpha as you are.” “What?” Roane liked hearing the words “your mate.” The rest of Doc’s explanation gave him a headache. “Caitlyn has embraced her beast, to an extent.” Doc sighed. “She came to me the other day with a problem. I told her I would keep this confidential, but I don’t think she can get over this on her own.” “What’s the problem?” Roane’s tension grew. Was something wrong with her? “I want you to hear me out before you react.”
“Just tell me.” “Caitlyn physically desires you all the time.” Roane blinked. “That’s a problem?” “No, that’s good. That means she’s as fixated on you as you are on her. She recognizes you on a basic level. I’d imagine if I hadn’t put the both of you on such strong birth control, she’d be pregnant by now.” Satisfaction welled inside him. “Yeah.” “But there’s a slight problem. Caitlyn has latched on to the alpha of this team. She’s a strong woman. Her instincts are not to submit to you in all things, Roane. She just needs a male strong enough to justify procreation. Sex,” Doc spoke bluntly, apparently seeing Roane’s confusion. “I still don’t see the problem. I don’t want a slave.” The conversation was beginning to make him uncomfortable. Talking about sex with Doc had that effect. “My point is that you’ve engaged with the others, ah, sexually. When the mating heat struck.” He flushed. “So?” “I think Caitlyn’s been fighting the lure of four unclaimed males in close proximity. You have Caitlyn, thus your mating heat, and hers, is no longer an issue. But the others are close to their time, and it has to be affecting her. I also think she needs to bond with the men on a sexual level, if only to have that same closeness with them that you do.”
“That’s crazy.” Jealousy speared him, though a part of him recognized Doc’s words as truth, further confusing him. “Is it? After the five of you bonded that first time, didn’t you feel a part of something more? And didn’t you tell me that your beast recognized them as family only after you’d experienced sexual satisfaction together?” “Do we really need to talk about this?” he asked in a strangled voice. “Yes, if you’re planning on keeping Caitlyn.” “Keeping her? Hell, yes, I’m keeping her. She’s mine.” “Exactly. So listen to me when I tell you how to hold on to her. She feels terrible that she desires the others. When she explained it to me, though, it sounded more like a need to belong than a need for just sex. Most of the time it’s after she’s experienced coitus with you that she feels the need for more closeness. Oddly, like a pack mentality,” Doc said to himself. “I’m not sure…” Roane stopped, the scent of Caitlyn’s need too close to ignore. “Shit.” He spun away from Doc and threw open the lab door in time to see Caitlyn advancing on a naked Derrick. “Roane.” Caitlyn’s husky voice cut through the red hazing his vision. Her eyes flashed from a darker green to light jade. “I need --” She shook her head and seemed to grow even larger, her claws and teeth flashing under the lab lighting. “Yours,” she rasped, nodding at Derrick. “And mine.” Hearing her claim Derrick pushed him into a rage. The only
thing that saved Derrick from a fatal mauling was that he made no move toward Caitlyn. He stood frozen, like prey being stalked by a hungry predator. That, and Caitlyn’s obvious loss of control. “You see?” Doc said quietly. “It’s an instinctual urge she has. She can’t help it. You need to fix this.” “Derrick, don’t fucking move.” Roane used everything within him to prevent his change. He needed to stay in control for Caitlyn’s sake. He’d had years of practice and should have remembered how hard it had first been to rein in his basic desires. Doc was right. Managing their abilities had been rather easy until their first mating heat hit. It had taken fights, blood, and sex before all five of the squad had come to an understanding. A pecking order reaffirmed with dominance and submission…sexually. “You’d better hurry the hell up, Roane. I can’t take much more of this without throwing her down and fucking the shit out of her.” Derrick groaned, his skin hardening in spots, his eyes vacillating between round and slitted pupils. “Fuck.” Roane didn’t have time to deal with this any other way. He knew something had been bothering Caitlyn, but he hadn’t wanted to acknowledge it was anything serious. Just growing pains as she adjusted to her beast. “Doc, do me a favor and locate the others. Send them to my room right away. I’m going to fix this right now.” “Finally.” Doc breathed a sigh of relief. “I’ll find them. Just go.”
Roane stepped between Derrick and Caitlyn and heard Derrick’s low moan. “Go to my room, D. We’ll settle this once and for all.” “I’m not sure I can move.” “Caitlyn.” Roane felt the full force of her attention in his cock, which hardened in seconds. “Let Derrick go. I know what you need, baby. Come with me, and I’ll make sure you get it.” He closed the distance between them. Reaching out, he grazed her cheek with his hand. She stared into his eyes, and the scent around them faded. She didn’t look away from him, even when he heard the door to the lab open and close behind him. “You want the others bonded to you, as they are to me.” She nodded, her frame relaxing. “And you want me too, don’t you, hellcat? Deep inside you,” he crooned, needing her right now. “Yes.” She hissed. “Mine.” “Exactly.” This wouldn’t be easy, but it had to be done. “Let’s go back to my room then and get the party started.”
Chapter Nine
Roane forced himself to focus on Caitlyn and her needs. Though everything in him cried out not to do what he had planned, on an instinctual level, he knew this would ease Caitlyn’s problems. Taking a deep breath, he led Caitlyn, still changed, toward his room. As they walked, he continued to praise her, soothing her with words. His hands stroked her shoulders, her back, her belly. He nuzzled her cheek, allowing her to mark him with her scent. He deliberately moved slowly, to give the others time to reach his room first. But all too soon, they reached his door. “Look at me, hellcat.” He waited until she met his gaze. They stood eye to eye. “The others are inside, but you need to remember something.” Roane dropped the shorts and shirt he wore, flowing into his other form with ease. “You belong to me.” He glared down at her, reinforcing his dominance. “They belong to me as well. Remember that.” Her eyes narrowed. Instead of arguing the point, as he expected, she nodded and glanced away, accepting his truth. “Good.” His low voice rumbled. “Do what I tell you inside.” He cupped her breasts and squeezed, appreciating her firm nipples beneath the thin overshirt she wore. “I will.” She grabbed his hands on her and caressed his fingers. “You’re in charge.” Her voice quivered with excitement, and Roane knew she could smell the scent of four caged Circs within his room. He kissed her, nipping her lip with his teeth. Licking the small
spot of blood, he let her go and opened the door. Inside, Derrick, Hale, Zack, and Ace stood waiting. “Derrick started to fill us in,” Hale said. His hooded gaze told Roane this wouldn’t be as easy as he hoped it might. “Maybe you can tell us exactly what it is you need.” Caitlyn released her scent, and they groaned. “This is what I was talking about.” Derrick panted. “This is shooting my control all to hell,” Zack murmured, glancing away from Caitlyn. Roane pushed Caitlyn in farther and closed the door behind him. “Here’s the situation. Caitlyn and I no longer experience mating heats, not since we’ve mated.” He couldn’t help pulling her back into him. His erection pressed against the small of her back, making him even harder. “You four,” he continued, “are getting closer to your next heat. From what Doc said, that’s pushing all of Caitlyn’s buttons.” “Damn.” Ace stepped forward, aroused and not hiding it. “So what are you going to do about it?” He glanced uneasily at Zack. “There’s more.” Roane groaned when Caitlyn shifted. “Dammit, stop moving.” To the others he said, “When we started in Circe’s Recruits, we were military with rank and structure. It wasn’t until we hit the mating heat that things got…different.” Hale snorted. “Different. Yeah. That’s what I’d call mass orgies
and violent sex.” “My point is that Caitlyn’s more like us in the beginning stages. We bonded tight after we engaged. Sexually.” Roane had a hard time keeping still while he talked. The mention of sex set off several excited scents in the room, his own included. “She’s mine, no question. as mine, she’s been experiencing the need to feel the rest of you the way you all felt me. Like the other day with Hale.” “Fuck. You weren’t supposed to say anything.” Hale’s pupils grew slitted, and his arms lengthened, thickened. “What about Hale?” Derrick asked. “And make it quick, because my beast is pushing to come out.” “Yeah,” Zack and Ace agreed together. Roane explained, “Caitlyn feels a deeper connection when it’s sexual. So we need to engage in another free-for-all.” He swallowed hard. “But we’re not going to get crazy this time. Zack and Ace, I know you two have been trying to keep it leashed for Kelly’s sake, but Caitlyn needs you two.” “For Caitlyn.” Ace nodded. “But not one fucking word to Kelly about this.” Zack blew out a breath. “Not that this is a hardship or anything, but…” “I understand,” Caitlyn spoke quietly and approached Zack. “I like Kelly. A lot. I wouldn’t ask any of you to do this if it weren’t so --” She paused, and her scent filled the air, ripe with invitation. She moaned and clutched Zack’s forearms. “It’s something I can’t control. I need this. My beast needs you.”
Zack and the others changed in a heartbeat, clothing scattering everywhere, Caitlyn’s included. Roane forced himself to watch as his four friends converged on his mate. Lips and hands were on every part of her. She turned and caught his eye, reassuring herself before she fell back under the onslaught of four hungry Circs. Sudden acceptance clicked inside him as the mating heat hit his team. Roane normally wouldn’t tolerate anyone taking his mate but him. This, however, was different. He had to see to his mate’s needs and his men’s needs. Instead of feeling like a violation, this joining reminded him of the ties he’d forged years ago. Ties he now had to see created between the only people in the world he cared for. “Use the bed. That’s what it’s there for,” he growled. “But when you fuck her, leave her pussy alone. That’s all mine.” The others grunted their assent and guided her toward the kingsize bed, focused on sating their desires. To Roane’s surprise, Caitlyn took charge, licking and sucking wherever she pleased. In seconds, she had Derrick on his back and Hale on his knees while she writhed between Zack and Ace on either side of her. Before he knew it, she’d eased her ass over Derrick and had Hale in her mouth while she jerked Ace and Zack off with her hands. She is so fucking hot. My mate controlling four Circs. Power and control, and she’s mine. Roane growled and forced himself to let go of his shaft. He was close to coming and wanted to wait. He’d spend inside his mate and nowhere else. Derrick gripped her hips to help her with the pace. But he needn’t have bothered.
Caitlyn rode him hard while she sucked Hale off. Roane stepped closer to the bed, so close he could reach out and touch Hale if he wanted. He couldn’t see Hale’s face, but he heard the male’s groans, his rapid breathing signaling he was close. It would have been impossible to last long under Caitlyn’s touch in the first place, but when she layered the room with those pheromones, she exacerbated the tension among them. Derrick was the first to come as he yelled out and bucked under her. Hale came in her mouth, his ass squeezed tight as he pumped. She swallowed his load then left him and turned her attention to Zack’s flushed cock, then Ace’s. While she stroked them with her hands, she alternately sucked one, then the other. “Caitlyn, yes, honey.” Zack moaned as he thrust inside her mouth. “I’m coming.” She pulled away and fisted his shaft, milking the copious seed that landed over her chest. He jerked at the same time Ace spewed, their seed mixing over her skin. She held them both, their flushed cocks leaking cum that she licked away with a sexy pink tongue. Roane couldn’t handle anymore. His aggressive need to take what was his overwhelmed him. As if sensing he’d broken, the others stepped back. Roane lifted Caitlyn off Derrick, who rolled off the bed. “Now it’s my turn.” Her glassy-eyed gaze told him she’d fallen under her own sexual spell. She had yet to find release, so intent on absorbing the sexual fulfillment from the others. The others gathered around the bed, two on one side and two
on the other. They were hard, the scent of their mating heat still on them. Roane didn’t waste any time but pushed inside Caitlyn, his cock throbbing and huge. She arched into him, her clit rubbing against his pelvis. Not giving her anything but his all, Roane pounded inside her. As he thrust, he smoothed the cum over her tits, spreading the scents of his men over his female. One unit, one family. But she was his mate. Only his seed would bathe her pussy. Only his young would grow in her womb. His excitement increased, more so when he glanced at his men jerking off over them. The beasts’ arousal grew, all of them hungering for that plane of ecstasy, to produce more of their kind and cement their existence in the world. Caitlyn scratched at his shoulders, her eyes wild as she neared her end. Roane wanted more. He wanted her complete submission. He leaned down and sucked her nipple, the taste of Zack and Ace’s cum arousing over Caitlyn’s honeyed scent. The others groaned and cried out as cum spattered Caitlyn and Roane while they mated. Marie Harte Roane felt her walls tightening around him and pushed harder, rubbing against her clit as he sought her womb. She roared her release as the others descended on her once more, kissing her wherever they could reach. Roane closed his
eyes, his climax so close. Lips and hands plucked at his nipples, his mouth. He moaned into a man’s lips as he shot so hard, he nearly passed out. It took him a minute to find his breath, to realize the others had stepped away and watched with replete, peaceful eyes. “That was fucking incredible,” Derrick rumbled in the sudden quiet filled with harsh breathing. “It changed something,” Ace said softly. “I feel…” “Tied. Bonded to Caitlyn now,” Hale finished. He knelt to kiss her on the mouth. “Welcome to Circe’s Recruits, honey.” The others smiled and nodded, and Roane slowly pulled out of his mate and collapsed next to her. “Damn.” Ace wavered and sat his ass on the floor. “I’m dizzy. That completely sucked me dry. Holy shit.” “You said it.” Zack slid down next to him, not even blinking when Ace settled his head against his shoulder, an unexpected show of closeness Ace normally avoided. Hale sat on the edge of the bed next to Derrick. The two stared at each other. “This still doesn’t mean I owe you any money. She took advantage of me.” Derrick had to clear his throat to get the words out. “That little thing?” Hale nodded to Caitlyn, who’d changed back
into her normal form. Seeing that, the others did the same. “Nothing little about her beast,” Derrick said with a small grin. “I still say you can’t trust women. But for Caitlyn, I’ll make an exception.” Zack raised a brow. “And Kelly too.” Ace yawned. Roane rubbed his eyes, suddenly tired as hell. “I’ll fill Doc in on the gist of what went on here. But we keep this between ourselves. Right?” Everyone nodded. “Wait.” Caitlyn sat up, gloriously naked. Roane wished he had the energy to take her again, but for the first time in forever, he didn’t have a hard-on in her naked presence. “Honey?” “This is all so new to me,” she began. “The change, Circs, the danger out there. But from the beginning, you’ve all taken care of me. Protected me.” Tears slid down her cheeks, disturbing him. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all you’ve done for me. And this…” She waved a hand to include all of them. “I feel like I’m really one of you now, despite feeling like the star in a porn movie.” They chuckled, and Roane smiled at her blush. “I hate to be overly emotional, but I love you guys.”
“Aw, honey.” Hale smiled. “Caitlyn, we love you too.” Ace stood with Zack’s help. “It’s okay,” Derrick said in a thick voice. The men were suddenly there again, hugging and petting her. Nothing sexual about it. This time, their touch was all about comfort while Roane watched with satisfaction. Derrick ended the lovefest with a groan. “Nothing personal, but if I don’t get this sticky mess off my skin in the next two seconds, I’m gonna be sick.” “Hell.” Hale ran a hand through his hair. “This whole room smells like sex.” Zack snickered. “No kidding.” “Laugh it up. I’m not the one who has to sneak out of here in case Kelly’s around,” Roane drawled. That took care of his amusement. Ace and Zack shared a frown. “At least our shorts are still in one piece. Can’t say anything for our shirts, though.” As the others grumbled and dressed, Roane took Caitlyn in his arms. She looked like a sleepy cat, her green eyes fogged with repletion and with an affection that deepened as she stared up at him. “We really do love you, hellcat.” I love you.
“I know.” She smiled and closed her eyes. She still hadn’t admitted what he’d been hoping to hear. Annoyed with the softer side of him longing for a declaration, he hugged her to him and closed his eyes. “Guys? Make sure to close the door after you leave.” He slid into sleep as the door closed behind them, right where he wanted to be. Kelly nearly ran into Zack dragging Ace behind him in the corridor. Both men looked as if they’d been through the wringer. “Are you okay?” They wore shorts but no shirts, their muscled upper bodies making her want to fan herself from the sudden rise in her body temperature. Their tousled hair, sleepy eyes, and lazy grins looked out of place. She could have sworn she smelled…sex? “Kelly. I thought you were off today. It’s Saturday, isn’t it?”Ace pushed away from Zack. He flushed, a becoming shade of bronze that highlighted his Native American ancestry. She licked her lips, aware that both men followed the movement with more attention than it deserved. “I forgot my purse last night and realized I must have left it here.” Kelly should have kept her mouth shut, but she couldn’t help it. “What the hell have you two been doing?” “Team meeting,” they said in unison, which prodded her doubt. “Oh?” “Yeah.” Zack ran a hand through his black hair, a shade lighter than Ace’s. The movement showed off his large bicep. Stop ogling him, Kelly. He’s not yours, she tried telling herself.
But he could be, another part of her whispered. She turned her attention to Ace. They could be. Her mouth felt dry, and her heart raced, reminding her she was due for her monthly shot. Either that, or she was having a breakdown due to unfulfilled desire. Ace froze. “Kelly?” Scared that she’d taken an involuntary step forward, she dug her nails into her palms, welcoming the pain that freed her from insanity. Yeah, right. As if I could handle Ace and Zack. God, I can barely handle Stephen, and he isn’t half as captivating as either one of them. Why the hell would they want me when they can have any woman at the snap of a finger? “Um, sorry, guys. I don’t really have time to chat. Got a hot date tonight, and I need to get my hair done.” “Date?” They said again as one. It was ironic how in tune they seemed to be with each other’s feelings and thoughts, considering the way they constantly bickered. “Tell Doc I’ll see him Monday. If he needs me sooner, he can page me.” She hurried away from the best male bodies on the planet, scooped up her purse sitting on the counter between the kitchen and the residential hallway, and nearly ran out of the house. “I’ve gotta get Doc to up my meds,” she murmured and started her car. As she backed out of the driveway, an odd feeling made her stop. She put her foot on the brake and looked at the house, only to see Ace and Zack standing in front of the door. Hands
on hips and scowls on lips. A pair made especially for me, that inner voice added with a purr. “God, now I’m rhyming. Badly. Time to meet Stephen and see if he can take my mind off you two.” She waved out the window, then tore out of the driveway. She raced toward her hair appointment, praying tonight might be the night she stopped fantasizing about a pair of annoying, sexually enthralling, out-of-her-league ex-Marines who weren’t even fully human. If only it were that simple.
Chapter Ten
Caitlyn found flowers on the bed stand the day after she’d “bonded” with the squad. The next day she found chocolates on the pillow Roane had used just the night before. A week of gifts and love notes followed. She wanted to hug him. She wanted to throttle him. For with every caress and kiss came the same demand. Roane mandated that one Circ remain with her on guard duty at all times. He refused to allow her to leave the compound. The jerk actually thought the incredible sex they had each night would soothe her savage beast. She snorted. Right. Granted, she’d be a fool to turn down his body, and Caitlyn was nobody’s fool. But if she didn’t get out of this place, nice as it was, she’d go stark raving mad. The alarm went off, telling her to officially rise and shine. Yawning, she turned to find a red rose, a chocolate heart, and a note on Roane’s pillow. She smiled, unable to resist his exasperating charm. You’re sexy even when you sleep. And I’m still waiting, the note said. He’d mentioned waiting in a few other notes as well. Waiting for what, exactly? After Caitlyn showered and dressed, she found him in the kitchen with the others having breakfast. Leaning down, she planted a solid kiss on his lips. “Thanks for the chocolate.” Derrick rolled his eyes. “First flowers, then chocolates? Oh, yeah, he’s whipped.”
The others laughed. Caitlyn chuckled at the dirty look Roane shot Derrick. “I think it’s nice,” Kelly said, sipping coffee as she stood against the counter. “When a guy buys you flowers and candy, he’s showing he cares.” Everyone stared at the bouquet of carnations sitting next to her. “Your guy is an idiot,” Ace muttered. “You’ve been going out for a month, and he doesn’t even know your favorite flower. Besides, carnations are cheap.” “But pretty.” Caitlyn tried to ease the anger darkening Kelly’s face. “And it’s the thought that counts,” Hale added, smirking when Zack flipped him off. Kelly glared at Ace. “Oh? So what’s my favorite flower, genius?” “Roses,” he and Zack answered. “Pink ones,” Ace added. “You like the sweet smell. Carnations have no scent.” He dumped what remained of his coffee in the sink, scowled at the flowers, and left. Zack shook his head at Kelly and followed Ace. “What’s the matter with them?” Caitlyn wanted to tell her to give it up already. Everyone knew that Zack and Ace had feelings for her. Hell, Caitlyn had only joined the team a few weeks ago, and she’d clearly seen how
much the men doted on the woman. “Geez. It’s not like Stephen and I are serious.” Kelly glanced away from Caitlyn and the others. “I have things to do.” After she left, Derrick sighed. “Like I said, women are trouble. Kelly’s being damned naive. You don’t have to be Circ to see how hungry the boy toys are whenever they’re around her.” “The boy toys?” Caitlyn grinned. Hale snickered. “You should see what happens when Derrick calls them that. Last time, they put him on his ass for days, even with the quick healing the change gives. Remember, D.?” “Whatever.” Derrick pushed his plate away. “Time to see Doc. Got a mission to take care of, remember, Hale?” Derrick mimicked. “See ya, Caitlyn.” Hale sighed and stood. “Later, Caitlyn.” Roane was the last to leave her. “I hate that we have to go, but we can’t ignore this one.” Doc recently caught wind of an out of control Circ killing people in south Jersey. A job for Circe’s Recruits. Caitlyn wanted to go with the others but knew she was nowhere near ready for such a battle. She’d never killed anyone, never even been in a fistfight. At this stage in her new life, she had no way to successfully assist the men who’d spent years in military training. “Good luck. I’ll be sitting here, keeping out of trouble. Time to join the working class again.” With Doc’s assistance, she’d hired a moving company to put most of her things into storage except what she needed to run her Internet business. She’d set
up a small office in one of the guest rooms. All of her clothes were hanging in Roane’s closet or sitting in his drawers, much to the bossy man’s satisfaction. A temporary arrangement, she kept telling herself, wishing she believed it. “I’ll miss you, hellcat.” Roane lifted her to her feet. He pulled her against him, his erection firm, despite the fact they’d made love early that morning. He gave her a swift kiss and a pat on the ass. “You’ll only be gone a few days.” “A week at the most,” he agreed. “But I’ll be checking on you daily. Don’t leave the compound.” Oh, please. Not again. Not wanting to argue with him, she nodded. “And you stay safe. If you get hurt, I’ll kick your ass.” He grinned, his brown eyes dancing with laughter…and something more. “And?” “And what?” “What else am I still waiting to hear?” Nonplussed, she stared at him, her attention gradually focusing on his talented mouth. “That I’ll miss you? I will.” “Nope.” “That I’ll stay here? I said I would.” Even though I really won’t. “No.”
“That I think you’re hot?” she tried. He glared at her. “Are you really that dense?” “Excuse me?” What the hell had crawled up his butt? “Shit. Never mind. See you later.” He kissed her hard, then left. I’ll never understand the male mind. She shook her head and finished her breakfast. The men departed an hour later. She didn’t see them go, focused as she was on setting up her office with the intent to avoid watching Roane leave. Her distraction wasn’t working. Damn it. She was going to miss him. A lot. “So what is all this for? What do you do?” Kelly asked an hour later as she helped Caitlyn organize. “I run a Web design company. Or I should say, I used to work for a Web design company. Now I’m going to open up my own business. Not like I can commute to Philly every day. Too much driving.” “You’re really staying here?” Kelly asked “I am. Is that a problem?” “Not at all.” Kelly grinned. “I’ve been around nothing but men for too long. For three long years, I’ve worked here. I love the guys, but it’s going to be so much better with another woman around to talk to.” “I was hoping you’d feel that way. I’m like you. I didn’t have that many friends at home. Since my family passed, it’s pretty much
just been me. I was a workaholic until I got sick.” “But that’s gone now. It was just you turning beastly, right?” “Beastly. Yeah.” Caitlyn chuckled. “Being a Circ is actually pretty cool, once you can control it.” “Really?” Sensing Kelly’s interest, Caitlyn decided to ask a few questions of her own. “Kelly, you’re Doc’s right hand. You should know a lot more about all this than I do. So why don’t you?” Kelly shrugged. “I handle most of his personal stuff. Because of the nature of what he and the others -- you -- are, we can’t exactly have regular staff. Diego will be back soon, thank God, so I can stop cooking. But I like keeping the house, doing the bills, and even Doc’s clothes shopping. That man needs me, let me tell you. The guys do their own cleanup, though. As if I’d be caught dead washing Ace’s dirty socks.” “Ew. Roane tried persuading me to wash his stuff a week ago. Needless to say, he’s now doing my laundry.” “Nice one.” Kelly plugged in the power strip and stood, her gaze searching Caitlyn’s. “Can I ask you something personal?” “Sure.” “You and Roane, you’re a couple now, right?” “I guess.” “So, um, is the attraction between you two super intense?”
“Yes.” Caitlyn had a feeling Kelly wanted to ask something else. “But is it because he loves you, or because it’s a Circ thing?” Caitlyn started. “I know we’re affectionate with each other, but I don’t know I’d go so far as to say he loves me.” “Please. Roane is giving you flowers and candy, and you’re already sleeping with him. He’s always touching you, and he looks at you as if he could eat you alive at any moment. I swear, he’s growled more at the guys in the past few weeks than he ever has before. God forbid, one of them get too close to you. Face it. The guy is totally smitten.” “You think?” God. Could Kelly be right? “You love him, right?” For days she’d been trying to convince herself her stay was temporary, that the feelings she had for Roane would fade. No one fell in love that quickly. Did they? The buildup of emotion she’d tried so hard to suppress spilled free. “Yes.” She sighed. “Even though it happened so fast, I love him so much. It’s like there’s no more me without him, and it’s scary.” Once the momentum started, she couldn’t stop. “I’m an independent woman. I want to work and do my own thing. But without Roane in my life, there’s definitely something vital missing.” Much as she wanted to tell all this to Roane, she didn’t want to make things awkward between them if he didn’t feel the same way. “But to answer your earlier question, I’m not sure why the attraction -- the sex -- is so great. Being Circ is who we are. Maybe that helps the chemistry. I mean, I feel a connection to the others. But I don’t feel this intense love the way I do for Roane.”
“Hmm.” Kelly glanced away, her brow furrowed in thought. “What about you and Stephen? How’s that going?” “It’s not. He’s nice. He’s handsome. But he’s not…” “Zack or Ace. Come on already, Kelly. Everyone in the house knows how you all feel about each other.” Kelly blushed. “I don’t know what you mean.” “They practically fall all over themselves when you’re around. They try not to curse in front of you, which for them is a stretch.” Caitlyn tugged at her shirt in frustration, annoyed at how Kelly denied her feelings for the pair, for Caitlyn’s men. “They hate carnations; they knew your favorite flower and how you take your coffee. Hell, everything they do is weighed by how it will affect you. I hear them talking. It’s ‘Kelly this, Kelly that.’” “Then why don’t they ever make a move?” Kelly seethed with frustration, shocking Caitlyn with her sudden outburst. “Why don’t they ask me out? Why don’t they ever touch me? Kiss me? Buy me damned roses?” Her mouth opened and shut as she stared in horror at Caitlyn. “Oh, my God. Tell me I didn’t just say ‘they’ all over the place.” “Oh, no. You yelled ‘they’ a lot.” Caitlyn grinned with smug satisfaction. Finally. “I’m not some wild woman. I meant he, not they. It’s just hard to choose between them,” Kelly babbled, looking upset. “But Ace and Zack --” “Are a set. Relax, Kelly. I’m not judging you.” Hell, no, I’m not.
Not when I had sex with all five of them. A secret I’m taking to my grave. Talk about a wild woman. “Love -affection,” she corrected before Kelly could interrupt, “is what it is. The guys have fallen hard. They’re probably just waiting for a signal from you. You barely look at them. When you do, you’re riding them for one infraction or another. Granted, they’re slobs, but you can’t be mad at them all the time. And Stephen’s existence in your life isn’t exactly welcoming them, you know?” Kelly sagged into a chair. “Well, what should I do? I look at them, I want them. It’s that simple. Though I pretty much stay away from all the Circ stuff Doc’s involved in, I know there’s some kind of mating heat that takes the guys away for days.” She swallowed audibly. “They’ve seriously trashed my house a time or two when the urge hits and they can’t come back here for whatever reason. I know that much. It makes me wish I could be the one to help them. I wonder who they’re with, and it kills me.” Kelly stared with misery at Caitlyn. She has no idea the guys take care of each other. Oh, boy. “All I can say is that if you have questions, ask them,” Caitlyn offered, hoping Kelly would take her up on the suggestion. “I know I’m new, but I have eyes. Those two are so into you, it’s not funny. If you gave them the slightest notion you wanted them, they’d be all over you. Seriously.” Kelly bit her lip. “You think? But look at them. They could have anyone they wanted. They’re so hot.” She groaned and rapped her head back against the wall. “Why would they want me?”
“Are you kidding?” Caitlyn stared in astonishment. “Kelly, everyone who looks at you takes a second and third glance. Dark red hair and blue eyes? Guys love red hair. And you have boobs!” Kelly blushed. “Cut it out.” “Well, they’re bigger than mine. I’ve seen both Zack and Ace staring at those buggers when you aren’t looking.” “Shut up. Those buggers. Geez.” Kelly laughed for some time, relaxing into the chair. “You’re good for my confidence. I knew I liked you.” She pursed her lips. “It’s been a while since you’ve been anywhere but the compound. Isn’t that bugging you?” “You have no idea. But Roane told me not to leave. I think he’s worried the PPA might bother me again.” “Really?” Kelly arched a delicate brow. “I may not be involved with Doc’s lab findings, but I do provide a measure of security when the guys aren’t here. I’m as aware of the threat as they are. You can’t stay locked up forever. Look, I’m an expert marksman with the tranq gun, as well as my own nine mil.” Kelly grinned. “Military family, what can I say? How about we do a little shopping today?” She dug into her pocket and held up one of Roane’s credit cards. “Roane’s treat.” “Kelly! I can’t take Roane’s money.” “Yes, you can. He told me to buy you whatever you needed. While he’s gone, I have orders to get you jewelry and flowers and whatever else I think you might like,” Kelly said with a sly grin.
“Why are you smiling like that?” “I just happen to know that Roane is desperate to hear three little words from you. He’s been poring through women’s magazines and hitting me up for help at every opportunity.” Kelly laughed again. “It does my heart good to see Mr. Hard-ass falling over himself to hear the words ‘I love you.’ And you had no clue?” “Ah, no.” Dazed, Caitlyn wondered how she could have been so blind. “So let’s celebrate with some shopping.” “But…” Her independence reasserted itself. After all the lessons she’d gone through in changing , in how to control her beast, could she really still fear thugs like Simon and Vincent? She imagined taking them apart with her strength. Then there was the matter of Kelly’s gun… “Okay. Maybe you can show me where you got your hair done.” She looked at her nails. “A manicure wouldn’t be too out of the question, either.” Kelly hooted. “Now you’re talking my language. I’ll leave Doc a note.” Kelly stood and moved to the door. “Trust me, Caitlyn. You need this. I know the danger out there, but you can’t let them rule your life. Not if you want to be in control of it.” “I agree. And with what Doc and the guys have taught me, if the PPA wants to screw with me, they’re in for a real treat.” She lifted a hand and changed it into a clawed weapon. “Man. I’ll say.” Kelly stared, wide-eyed. “Here’s a thought. Maybe we shouldn’t go for a color on those nails. Pink claws just wouldn’t be as threatening, you know?”
“How about blue? Or steel gray?” Marie Harte “Much better.” They stared at each other and burst into laughter. The ache around Caitlyn’s heart eased. When Roane returned, she’d have a heart-to-heart with the big guy. It was time to stop straddling the fence. To love or not to love was no longer an option. ***** A week later… “Seriously, Roane. Flowers?” Derrick complained as they readied to take out the subject they’d been watching. Confirming her location had taken a little time, especially since the PPA had been swarming all over the city. They even had a contingent of agents around the woman’s secluded house in the woods. “You’re pussing out, big time.” “Shut up, D. I think it’s refreshing to see Roane courting,” Hale said with a shit-eating grin. Ace snickered beside him, and Roane closed his eyes, praying for patience. “Did she say it yet?” Zack asked from behind them. As the group changed and dressed in their battle armor, made out of a light Kevlar blend courtesy of Doc, Roane clenched his jaw tight to keep from roaring his displeasure with the entire situation. Away from Caitlyn for the first time since they’d mated, he felt
out of sorts, lost, and on edge with everyone and everything. Like an idiot, he’d contemplated his relationship with Caitlyn to death. They hadn’t been together long enough. She was a new Circ, likely still in shock about how her world had changed. The threat of danger loomed over her with the PPA’s constant presence. They had fantastic sex. He courted her at every opportunity, and the woman still hadn’t told him what he wanted to hear. None of which accounted for how much he fucking loved the female. God. The way she organized everything of hers in his -- their -- room to the nth degree. Her penchant for chocolate and horror movies. The way she stroked him with her thumb when they held hands. She wasn’t moody at all. An adaptable woman with a temperament that totally complemented his own. Not to mention that just breathing in her scent gave him a hard-on from hell. Was it any wonder he loved her? He fumed as he checked the gun at his side, a specially constructed weapon that fit his overlarge grip. He’d given her time, hadn’t he? How fucking hard was it to say “I love you, Roane. You are my everything?” Maybe that was pushing it, but couldn’t Caitlyn see how he felt? He’d given her damned flowers. He’d picked his shit up around her, tried to calm down the swearing, and even did her fucking laundry. So desperate to find out what he’d done wrong, he’d done the unthinkable and asked the one guy on their team who had more experience with women than any of them. He glared at Hale. The playboy with the charming smile. The asshole with the biggest mouth. Belatedly realizing the futility in getting an answer out of their resident Lothario, Roane had done the smart thing and turned
to Kelly for answers. The flowers had worked, if that kiss Caitlyn gave him was anything to go by. “She’ll say it when she’s ready,” he growled, caught up in woman problems. Zack shook his head with amused sympathy. “Now you’re brooding. Damn, Roane. You have her in bed. She’s in your life, you’ve mated with her. What’s the big deal about a few words?” “So if and when you finally get the balls to approach Kelly, how will you feel if she doesn’t say them?” Zack’s grin faded. “Point taken.” “Right. Now let’s leave my love life alone and focus on the job. Hale, Derrick, and Zack, you three handle the PPA. Got your tranqs?” They nodded. “Ace, you’re with me. With some luck, maybe this chick isn’t too psycho. Maybe Doc can save her.” Gunshots followed several deep, guttural shrieks coming from inside the house. A body flew through the glass window to lie on the back lawn. The blood over the man’s ravaged face looked ink black under the waning moonlight. His broken body didn’t twitch, and probably never would again. “Then again, maybe Doc can’t save this one,” Ace muttered as the team tore through the woods.
Chapter Eleven
“What a fucking mess.” Hale pushed two bodies aside as they stepped gingerly through the bloodbath inside the house. Apparently, in the week it had taken them to pinpoint her newest location, Sherry Thomas had done some damage. There were a dozen bodies littering the floor, all mangled and bloodied. It looked as if an animal had ripped through them. Computer equipment and recording devices were blinking and sizzling, courtesy of what looked like an acid that had been thrown over them. Great. The PPA hadn’t left anything to chance, except for their lives. Roane studied the poor woman on the ground in front of him. In death, she’d resumed her normal form, no longer able to sustain the energy her inner beast needed. Looking as she did, an innocent young woman, no one would place her as the butcher behind so many bodies. Yet she’d taken them all out, savagely so. The bullet between her eyes had been a merciful death. She’d begged him to end it while ripping a PPA agent in half. Which had made it all the sadder. She’d retained enough of her sanity to know she was a monster. “Shit. Roane, come here.” Derrick signaled the others over as well. Ace whistled. “Hell. Maybe something good did come of this.” Vincent Hoff stared sightlessly at them from his position on the floor. His neck was broken, his body ripped in half. A trio of hunting knives stabbed his groin.
“I don’t think it would be a far guess to say Sherry didn’t like Hoff much.” Hale shook his head. “I wouldn’t put rape past the bastard.” The thought that Hoff had violated this woman, that he might have done the same to Caitlyn, stirred the beast to rouse. “Good riddance,” Roane rumbled and clenched the pistol in his hand. “One less PPA asshole to deal with,” Derrick agreed. “By the looks of things, Sherry did the organization some damage. I count eleven other bodies.” “Plus the ones I found in the bedroom,” Zack said, reappearing from the hallway looking somber. “This place wasn’t hers. It belonged to the Foyer family, as we knew from our surveillance and research. But they never had a chance to finish moving out.” Much of the small house’s furniture was gone. A few pieces remained in the garage and at odd places throughout the house. “How many?” Roane asked. “Four bodies.” Zack paused, his eyes bleak. “One was a kid.” Silence fell over the room. Roane cleared his throat. “Call it in, Hale. Let Doc know our status.” He leaned down over Sherry Thomas’s body and closed her eyes. “Doc’s notified the local authorities.” Hale nodded to the remaining PPA agents they’d subdued. “We just need to finish dumping the PPA bastards she didn’t get to out in the woods. Another hour and these four will be up and running.” Though they had no love for Elliot Pearl and his PPA madness,
they refused to kill outright unless in self-defense. Roane took pride in that. It made them one more step above the dicks that hunted them. “Let’s wrap this up, then. I’ve got an itch to get home.” An itch with honey blonde hair and emerald green eyes. “Just keep us out of your ‘scratching’ from now on,” Derrick grumbled. “No problem.” Roane felt a burst of humor, a welcome respite from the grim reality around them. Since the night Caitlyn had bonded with the squad, her desire for the others had faded. Doc was right. Once the connection had taken, her sexual urges remained fixed to him and only him. Thank God. He didn’t know if he could share her again. The nagging worry that the squad’s next mating heat might push her into needing them once more tugged at him, but he’d decided to cross that bridge when he came to it. No use worrying about that shit when he had other, more pressing matters to attend. Namely, this bloody chaos…and a woman who couldn’t commit. Tired of waiting, he made a decision. When he returned, he and Caitlyn were going to discuss her feelings to his satisfaction and hopefully hers. Except when he returned home, no one was there. Two notes were tucked under magnets on the refrigerator. Doc and Diego had gone shopping for food. So Diego was back. Kelly and Caitlyn… Gone to the beach. Back soon. Roane saw red.
“Hey, where is everybody?” Hale asked as he entered the kitchen. He saw Roane and froze. “What? What happened? Are they okay?” The others filed into the room, staring from Roane to the fridge. As Hale read the notes aloud, everyone relaxed. Except for Roane. Derrick had the gall to chuckle. “Trouble. I told you, man. With a capital T.” Zack and Ace shared a glance. They hadn’t sniped at one another the entire time they’d been away from the compound. A new record. And one Roane could care less about as he envisioned Caitlyn in danger. “Someone’s here.” Hale looked behind him at the sound of a car coming up the drive. After a minute, the door opened, and feminine laughter filled the silent house. “Oh, boy. You know, I’m hungry. Anyone want to join me for a burger at the diner?” A chorus of “hell, yes” followed the others out the kitchen. “Kelly.” Hale grabbed a hold of her arm as they passed. “You hungry?” “Hey, Hale! Actually, I just came from lunch but…” Her gaze lit on Roane glaring at Caitlyn. “You know, I am. Um, Caitlyn? See you later.” She left in a hurry. Roane said nothing. He waited -- always fucking waiting for this woman -- as Caitlyn took wary steps toward him. His beast
wanted out, to punish his mate for disobeying. For scaring the shit out of him. Roane tamped it down. Barely. “Roane. I missed you.” Caitlyn ignored his anger and stood on tiptoe to kiss his chin. Her hands stroked his chest, running over his nipples with a zing that had him hard and aching in seconds. Crafty little thing. The woman had nerve, he’d give her that. The touch of her lips and waft of her scent distracted him, as his hellcat had known it would. “So you want to play?” he snarled, wanting to paddle her ass, but not until he’d fucked her into submission. He kissed her, dragging out her moans of pleasure with his tongue and his hands. She was so soft, so rounded in all the right places. And she wore too many clothes. He smelled her creaming and stripped them both, ripping through their clothes with a clawed hand. The press of her naked skin against his shattered what remained of his control. He planted her ass on the counter. In one smooth, hard thrust he seated himself inside her and groaned at her perfection. “Roane.” She gasped, clasping his neck tight. “Oh, more. More.” She arched, and he took her nipple in his mouth, sucking and biting with stinging pressure while he pounded into her. Her pussy gloved him, the suction so incredible, he was on the edge and cresting over in seconds. One hot race to the finish line. Caitlyn quivered around him, so close to finding satisfaction. “I don’t think so.” Roane glared and pulled out. Tossing her
over his shoulder, uncaring of their clothes, he stalked to their bedroom and threw her onto the bed. Then he turned and locked the door. Facing her once more, he caught his breath. Her eyes glowed, the pupils slitted. Her beast stared out at him, not compliant, not sorry, but challenging. “You could have been hurt. They could have taken you.” He fought to maintain his normal form, afraid that changed, he might actually hurt her with his rough urges to teach her a lesson. She needed to know her place -- deep in his heart, under his control. Caitlyn arched a brow at him, and he pounced with a curse, landing on top of her. He knocked the wind from her and took advantage. Thrusting another killer hard-on inside her, he resumed a hard pace while asking his questions. “Why did you go? Was having fun so much more important than your safety?” He penetrated so deep, he felt the tingle at the base of his balls. God, she was so hot. So wet. “Roane. Roane, please.” She was so beautiful, it took his breath away. Wanting to please her even as he knew he shouldn’t, he fought for control. Roane pulled out and shoved her onto her hands and knees. Angling higher, he pushed inside her ass. Slowly stretching her, he continued to glide until he was all the way in. Then he stilled. Marie Harte
“Tell me why. Why couldn’t you wait for me to come back? I’d have taken you into town.” He withdrew and rammed hard, causing her to gasp. “You didn’t obey me. You didn’t listen.” With her head bowed, her long, golden hair sweeping the bed beneath them, she held the ultimate pose of submission. Roane began to fuck her in earnest, barely aware of what he said as he sought release. “Don’t you know what it would do to me if anything happened to you? Don’t you know how much you fucking mean to me?” he roared. She moaned and twisted, but he wasn’t done. “I found a Circ in a houseful of dead bodies. And one of them was the dickhead who assaulted you. He could have raped you, Caitlyn. Could have taken you and hurt you.” Roane was spiraling out of control. He began changing as he pounded into her, unaware of the point when she changed too. He only knew he had to chain her to him. To tie her so tightly, she’d never be free of him. “I love you, Caitlyn. I can’t lose you.” He groaned and shot, again and again as he filled her with so much more than his seed. Reaching for it, he rubbed her plump clit, so wet with her need. She spasmed around him and came in an instant, a tinder on fire from his touch. “Roane,” she yelled and bucked, drawing him in farther. Roane didn’t know how long they remained glued to one another, or when they changed back, when she murmured, “You’re making one giant wet spot beneath us. Let’s go clean
up.” Shocked at how violently he’d taken her, Roane gently withdrew and remained silent as he followed her into the shower. Stepping into the warm water behind her, he wanted to apologize. He wanted her to apologize, to give him a declaration of intent, of why she’d been playing with her safety when she could have -“I love you,” she whispered and kissed him. Roane buckled and dragged her down with him, so that she straddled his middle on the sizable shower floor. “Say that again,” he rasped, raining kisses down her cheeks and throat. “I love you. Is that what you’ve been waiting for?” The tears in her eyes undid him. “God, hellcat. I’m so damned sorry. I didn’t mean to be so rough. But I --” She smacked him in the chest, hard enough to make him catch his breath. “You idiot. How could you not know I loved you? I’ve been sleeping with you for weeks. I moved into your untidy, nasty room -- which needs a makeover -- without complaint. I fucked four of your best buddies,” she whispered and blushed, “because I’m so connected to you, I have to be connected to them. We damn well mated, you jackass. And you thought I didn’t love you?” Her voice rose. “And when the heck were you going to tell me you loved me? Because taking me up the ass and shouting it out for the world to hear is a little short of romantic!” Roane stared at the intensity in her dark green eyes and the
beast rippling under her golden skin, and he lost it. He laughed so hard and for so long, she had to hit him to make him stop. The water ran over them like gentle rain, soothing and cleansing his fears away. “Hellcat, you are so much my heart, it won’t beat without you. You’re my world. The air I breathe.” He wiped the tears from her starry eyes. “And if you tell any of the guys what I just said, I’ll paddle your ass for weeks. I’m already getting shi -- crap -- because I gave you flowers and candy. I even asked Hale for advice in dealing with you.” He rubbed his eyes. “Big mistake.” “I could have told you that.” She smiled and stroked his chest, playing in the slick slide of her hand over his pecs. “Why didn’t you tell me you loved me, Roane?” “Honey, I was so into you, so in love with you, it didn’t occur to me you wouldn’t know. And with so much on your plate recently, I wasn’t sure I had the right to demand you admit your feelings for me. I thought if I hinted at it enough, you’d tell me.” “No, you were afraid of the answer, weren’t you?” Her eyes twinkled. “Hell, yes.” Roane cupped her cheeks and brought her mouth to his. “You’re it for me, Caitlyn. I don’t care if it’s been a day, a month, or a year since we met. I know what my heart tells me. I love you. And I’m keeping you.” She sighed and kissed him again. “Now that’s romantic.” She pressed his lips and pushed her tongue inside his mouth, licking at the cavern of his mouth while stroking his tongue with the promise of more. Not surprisingly where she was concerned, his cock stirred. “I think someone needs a good
wash. Then we need to get back down here and see to this.” She grabbed him hard, and he groaned. They stood, and she took her time lathering them both. “I have no complaints about this master bathroom.” “Just my room?” he said into her mouth, devouring every inch of her he could reach. “Our room,” she breathed. “I’m making changes. I can work from the compound. I’ll live with you. But not in a puke greencolored room.” “Whatever. Paint it pink if you want.” He sucked the mark on her neck that refused to fade. “Mine,” he purred. “Yours.” She knelt before him, cupping his balls with a firm hand. “Forever,” he demanded. “Forever,” she agreed. “So long as we know who’s really in charge.” He opened his mouth to argue, but all that came out was a groan. “Yes, hellcat. We both know who’s really in charge.” “You are, my bossy lover,” she teased. “When I say you are.” “I love you, baby. So much.” He ended on a groan as she showed him who was boss. ***** Diego and the promise of good food returned. The team added a new member to its ranks for the first time in three years. And
Evan’s recent discoveries about the female Circs he’d been tracking excited him to no end. All valid reasons for Evan to ignore his private, rarely used e-mail account for days. Finally free to simply relax, Evan decided to catch up with the rest of the world. Hale had called to let him know the squad was back in town and that it might not be the best time to interrupt Roane and Caitlyn upstairs. The pair had things to settle. Positive progress toward a bright future. Evan hummed as he sat in one of his labs in front of his computer. He entered his password to access his mail and scrolled down his many messages. Office gossip from a few of the labs he contracted, trustworthy sorts from whom he regularly ordered medical supplies. A few jokes from his favorite biochemist at Hopkins. Some more news from the military friends he kept in touch with. And a note from Elliot Pearl. Scowling, Evan deleted the brief message after a quick read. When would Elliot learn he wanted nothing more to do with the man? Their relationship, such as it had once been, was over. Despite his interest -- purely scientific -- in what Elliot might be working on, Evan refused to reply. He would not get sucked down that hole again. Not after dealing with that cold-hearted bastard before. Still, Evan couldn’t help wondering. Why Caitlyn? Why so many brutal failures on Elliot’s part? Why haven’t you tried to take me out of the way yet, Elliot? What the hell are you up to? ***** Kelly sat in a booth between Hale and Derrick, across from Zack and Ace. “Do you think Caitlyn will be all right?” She forced herself not to cover up. She wore a half shirt and shorts over
her bikini, but the way the Ace and Zack kept looking at her, she felt naked. “She’ll be fine.” Hale patted her arm. Zack frowned. “Why the hell did you two go to the beach?” Derrick asked, confusion on his arresting face. “You know what’s out there, Kelly. The PPA might not be an immediate threat to you, but they want Caitlyn bad.” “No, they don’t.” The others stared at her. “We ran into Simon Dunn on Monday, the day you guys left.” “What?” Ace bit out in a voice so menacing, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. “Explain.” Zack didn’t change expression, but his gray eyes darkened. “Look, you can all sit there like big men, expecting Caitlyn to sit pretty and wait on you guys to live her life, but it’s not going to happen. She’s an independent woman. She needed to get out. Come on, guys. You locked her up for a month with no parole. Besides, with what she can do and my gun, we were safe.” Hale grunted. “There is that. You’re Annie Oakley with that thing. But it might have been a better idea to wait for us, as backup.” Kelly shrugged. “You can’t watch over her twenty-four-seven. And hey, it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission -especially around you guys. Gimme a break. We went shopping. We took the ferry into Delaware and had fun. You remember that concept?
Everything was fine. We just happened to run into Simon Dunn on the way.” “I want details.” Ace drummed his fingers on the table. His fingernails lengthened, and she swallowed, growing nervous even while a part of her was fascinated. She’d never seen any of the guys change. Ace dug his nails into the tabletop. “We were in a mall,” Kelly said quickly. “We were looking at some clothes in a store, and there he was. Simon glanced at Caitlyn and waved. He said ‘Nice to see you.’ If Caitlyn hadn’t dragged me away, I wouldn’t have known who he was. He seemed so pleasant, so normal.” So handsome, she didn’t say, but the look on Ace’s face suggested he was aware of Simon’s appeal. “I’ll kill him.” Ace’s quiet announcement worried her, so much so that she reached across the table and took his hand in hers. “It’s okay, Ace. He didn’t do anything more than that. He and his buddy saw us. They made sure we saw them. Then they walked away. I had my gun. Caitlyn had her claws.” Kelly frowned. “But they really didn’t want us. I felt his indifference.” “What?” Ace ran his fingers over her hand, and the heat that traveled through her body would have knocked her on her ass had she not already been sitting down. She swallowed hard and jerked her hand free. Ace’s tension, thankfully, abated. “I just meant that you could tell he was sending us a message.
They don’t want Caitlyn. At least, not now.” “Then what do they want?” Hale murmured. Kelly wished she knew. Though Simon had breezed by them with little fanfare, later, on the ferry, she’s met his friend again. While Caitlyn used the restroom, she’d waited outside by the railing, taking in the summer breeze off the Delaware Bay. The same male who’d walked with Simon earlier suddenly stood next to her. Brown hair. Even features. Nothing out of the ordinary, save he was tall and obviously muscular in jeans and a T-shirt. Then he sniffed her. Like a dog. He smiled and turned into six fee , three inches of blatant intimidation that she was savvy enough to beware. “You take care, Kelly Malloy,” he said in a low rumble. “I’ll be seeing you later.” He licked his lips and bent to whisper in her ear. “Count on it.” Frozen in fear, she’d stood there like a damned idiot when he sniffed her again. The bathroom door opened and caught her attention. Caitlyn came out with a frown. “What’s wrong?” “There’s…” No one stood by her. “Not a thing.” Kelly forced a smile. “Can’t wait to get back and see the look on Roane’s face when he sees what you bought him.”
“Kelly?” Hale looked concerned. Forcing yet another smile, Kelly shook her head. “Wish I knew what they wanted. But you know, I’m kinda glad I don’t. I figure if I stick to policing Doc and his bad habits, some of my cleanliness might rub off on you guys,” she directed around the table. They laughed, but Zack and Ace watched her carefully, as if sensing there was more she hadn’t told them. Admit to this booth full of testosterone that she’d been threatened by one of the PPA? No way. Kelly had no intention of giving up her independence any more than Caitlyn had. She knew how to use a gun, and she’d be damned if she’d let those jerks with the PPA scare her into kowtowing to cheap threats and intimidation. So the guy who’d sniffed her had freaked her out. Sniffing wasn’t illegal. Zack and Ace did it all the time. “What?” she asked when Zack smirked. “For a woman who wasn’t hungry, you nearly ate all my fries.” She had a bad habit of eating off his and Ace’s plates. “If you two weren’t so slow, I wouldn’t be able to do this.” She took his last fry, dipped it in ketchup, and tore it in two. “Now, Derrick. I believe you owe me fifty. Hale, we’re even. And you two…” She paused when she caught the intense look the “boy toys” shot her. “Twenty each.” Derrick swore. “You did something. There’s no way Caitlyn fell for Roane’s sorry-assed gifts. Flowers.” Derrick snorted. “Gimme a break.”
“I still say it was the sex.” Hale grinned. “Hard for a woman not to fall for a man who can ring her bell. Right, Kelly?” Feeling more than uncomfortable at being the center of attention, Kelly scowled. “I wouldn’t know.” She glared at Zack and Ace. “What are you two smiling at?” “So I guess you and Stephen are on the outs? That’s too bad.” Ace sounded way too hopeful to be sincere as he and Zack slapped their money on the table. Kelly didn’t bother to reply. She had no explanation as to why such a nice man bored her to tears. Stephen was tall, handsome, and charming. He didn’t curse in front of her, and his kisses were warm and pleasant. He was dull. “Stephen’s very nice.” Her defense sounded pitiful, as evidenced by the knowing grins passing around the table. Yeah, Stephen’s nice. He’s just not either of you. She stared at Zack and Ace, hungry for the two men she wanted with her last breath. Was Caitlyn right? Did they both feel for her, even a little bit, what she felt for them? “So, Kelly.” Zack paused. “You want to hit a movie tonight?” The others stared at him, and if she wasn’t mistaken, the large male flushed. “With the rest of us. We were thinking of seeing the new Bond movie.” Ace glared at him. “Bullshi -- I mean, that’s crap. We’re going to that horror flick.” Hale sighed. “I thought we’d agreed on that political thriller.” Then Derrick added his two cents, and the intimacy of the
moment passed. Kelly didn’t feel left out, though. She belonged to this odd group, who felt more like a real family than her father back home. Kelly’s heart eased when around these men. They might not realize it, but they needed her to keep them real. To keep them organized and human, aware of what living around a female entailed. And she finally admitted to herself how much she might really need them. Her gaze lingered on Ace and Zack. The pair noticed and smiled, their eyes glowing with the promise of something special, something just for her. Maybe I need to take control of the situation with these two. Something inside her cheered at the notion. A flare of aggression took Kelly by surprise. It was with some effort that she swallowed down the demands building at the base of her throat. “Tell you what, guys. We’ll see the political thriller tonight and the horror flick next week. Zack, I already saw the Bond movie with Caitlyn, so I’m out.” He sighed. “Now, how about we go double or nothing? I say Caitlyn’s pregnant within the next six months.” “Three. You’re on.” Derrick gave her the fifty he owed her and bet another twenty. As the others scrambled to catch up, Kelly scratched her arm, smoothing the itch under her skin, and downed another aspirin. “Headache?” Ace asked quietly as the others argued. “It’s nothing.” Nothing some hot sex with you and Zack won’t cure. She started. The low growl resounding in her mind was very much not her own. Ace shifted, and she caught his scent, like warm vanilla and an unidentified spice, one she could never
mistake for anyone but him. Her fingers suddenly tingled, as if something needed to come out. She stared at her hands, alarmed and trying desperately not to show it. It was definitely time to see Doc again. Soon. Marie Harte Marie Harte is an avid reader who loves all things paranormal and futuristic, but especially all things romance.
