What country is considered to be famous for eccentrics?
2. What sort of people are eccentrics? Mad as a hatter or geniuses at work? 1. British eccentrics are famous the world over. We breed eccentrics and we’re fascinated by them. Eccentrics are found in all walks of life, whether they are lords or lavatory cleaners, teachers or train drivers. Some wear odd clothes, some collect to the point of obsession, while others inhabit strange environments or hold unorthodox beliefs. Provided they are in no way a threat to society, we usually just avoid them but let them carry on in their own sweet way. 2. David Weeks, an American psychologist has conducted the first in-depth psychological study of eccentrics and has concluded that Britain’s are still the best in the world. Weeks did detailed personality tests and taped interviews with 130 eccentrics. ” A true eccentric is never acting”, writes Dr David Weeks. They are strong individuals with strange inclinations of their own which they are not afraid to express. They refuse to compromise. He believes one in 10,000 people in the UK is a genuine eccentric, and that for every female candidate there are nine male eccentrics. 3. One of his most interesting findings was the good health that eccentrics enjoy. “Almost all of them visit the doctor only once every eight or nine years; the rest of us go twice a year”. Eccentrics tend to live longer than the rest of us. The theory is that if you have a particular obsession, whether it is eating cardboard or living in a cave, life becomes full of meaning and significance and the resulting happiness strengthens the body’s immune system. “Eccentrics are living proof that one does not necessarily have to go through life with a fixed set of rules”, says Dr Weeks. “They are their own best leaders and poor followers, and do not feel a need to possess the
ordinary things of everyday life. They are prepared to stand out from the crowd. 4. Some, like botanist Alan Fairweather, a potato fanatic, have turned their eccentricity into a career – he worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food as a potato inspector. He has lived for thirty years on a diet of potatoes boiled in their jackets, supplemented by Mars bars, baked beans and Vitamin C. He won’t sleep in a bed and his idea of a break is a visit to the International Potato Centre in Peru. There are others who are spare time eccentrics, like Barry Kirk, a computer technician, who likes to paint himself orange and pretend to be a baked bean. Пояснения к тексту 1. walk of life – общественное положение; занятие, профессия 2. tape – записывать на пленку 3.stand out – выделяться 4. mad as a hatter – совсем сумасшедший, безумный (фиг.) X. 1. What was Selfridge’s idea of a department store? 2. Why was Selfridge successful? Harry G.Selfridge 1. One man more than any other was responsible for the modern look of department stores. He was Harry G.Selfridge, a Wisconsin native who took a job as a stock boy with Marshall Field in 1879 and quickly rose through the ranks. One of his first acts was to take goods down from the high shelves and put them on counters and tables where customers could peer at them, touch them and, as critics noted, shoplift them. 2. Among Selfridge’s many other innovations were the bargain basement, annual sales, gift certificates, the practice of
reminding customers how many shopping days were left till Christmas, the custom of keeping the ground floor windows lighted at night, thus encouraging evening strollers to browse and plan their next day’s shopping, and the now universal practice of putting the perfumes and cosmetics departments on the ground floor by the main entrance where they would sweeten the atmosphere and act as a magnet for passers-by. 3. Retiring from Marshall Field, Selfridge moved to Britain and at the age of fifty founded the London department store that bears his name. Though most British observers felt certain that such a crassly commercial undertaking would never succeed in London, it not only thrived but made Oxford Street into London’s premier shopping thoroughfare. Selfridge was obsessively devoted to his store. He concerned himself with everything from the sharpness of sales clerks’ pencils to the quality of their teeth. Something of his dedication to work is evidenced by a vacation he took in 1914. He left London by train on a Saturday morning and by noon the next day was on the skating rink of a Swiss hotel. He skated vigorously for four hours, packed up his skates and stocking cap, caught a train back to London and was at his desk at 8 a.m. on the Monday morning, That was his idea of a holiday. 4. But with the death of his wife in 1918, something snapped inside him. He began to go nightclubbing, gambled and neglected his business. In ten years, he ran through $8 million. Unable to pay back the debts he owed to his own store he was retired from the Selfridge’s board of directors and given a pension of $25,000 a year (later cut to $12,000 and then to $8,000), from which he was expected to pay back debts of $2 million. He lost his houses and his Rolls-Royce, took a small flat in Putney and travelled by bus. On 8 May 1947 he died nearly destitute and virtually forgotten, and how many times have we heard that story before?

1. What was the greatest invention of Heron? 2. What type of innovation did Elsa Schiaparelli introduce? 1. 2. 3. 4.
Пояснения к тесту: set up – помочь начать предприятие lingerie – дамское белье commission, v – давать заказ padded shoulder – “плечики”
Heron of Alexandria and Elsa Schiaparelli 1. Heron of Alexandria was one of the greatest inventors of all time. He lived around AD 60 in Alexandria, Egypt, then the centre of scientific discovery in the Greek and Roman world. Heron was extremely skilled at designing marvellous machines, some of which had practical purposes and others which were created just to astonish. His inventions included mechanical birds which sang, an amazing solar-powered fountain and a coin-operated slot machine which gave out holy water at temples. His most famous creation was the first steam engine. The engine could achieve the unbelievable speed of 1,500 revolutions per minute, but unfortunately it was not very efficient. To generate power equal to the strength of one man required an enormous amount of fuel. If he had not weakened his health by doing dangerous experiments, Heron might have gone on to develop a better steam engine. 2. Elsa Schiaparelli (1896-1973). The innovation of a top fashion designer can greatly influence the public’s taste in dress. Elsa Schiaparelli was a French designer whose ideas shocked the fashion world of the 1930s. Today she is mainly remembered for making the padded shoulder popular and introducing to the fashion world the colour “shocking pink”. 3. Schiaparelli was Italian by birth, but attended French, Swiss and English schools before working in the United States. In 1920 she went to Paris where she made friends with Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau and other surrealist artists who influenced the design of the clothes she made for herself. As a result of wearing her own striking black
and white sweaters, Schiaparelli began receiving orders from an American store. 4. In 1929 the store’s managers were so impressed that they decided to set her up in business. Soon she was able to expand into jewellery, perfume, cosmetics, lingerie and swimsuits and to commission her artist friends to create further fashion ideas. Пояснения к тексту: 1. hazard – риск; опасность 2. lack – недостаток; отсутствие (чего-л.) 3. in moderation – умеренно 4. harsh – суровый 5. ripe old age – зд. глубокая старость Villagers’ diet holds key to a healthy life 1. The simple diet followed by Greek villagers is the key to a long and healthy life and may protect against known health hazards such as smoking and lack of medical care, according to a study. The Greek variant of the Mediterranean diet – which was first identified as beneficial to health more than 20 years ago – combines the best of current scientific knowledge on healthy eating. 2. But Dimitrios Tricholpoulos, from the Harvard School of Public Health, who analyzed the diet of 182 Greek villagers aged 70 and over, says that it was the “overall dietary pattern” which explained their longevity and general good health.
Their diet included whole-grain bread, potatoes and other cereals. They ate cooked meals and soups, and salads rich in olive oil and accompanied by beans, lentils and vegetables in sizeable portions. Fresh fruit was a staple. Milk intake was low but cheese and yoghurt was high. Feta cheese was added to salads and vegetable stews. Meat was regarded as too expensive by most villagers, who preferred fish. 3. According to the report in the British Medical Journal, wine was consumed in moderation and almost always to accompany food. None of the pensioners was a heavy drinker: no man drank wore than seven, and no woman more than two glasses of wine a day. Analysis of the individual diets showed that for those who ate more of the components of the traditional Greek diet, there was a 17 per cent reduction in mortality. 4. Their diet – low in saturated (animal) fats, high in monounsaturated fats, high in complex carbohydrates (from grains and legumes) and high in fiber (fruits and vegetables) – was naturally rich in protective antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, important minerals and other chemicals, like polyphenols and anthocyanines, associated with good health. Greek villagers, whose lifestyle can be quite harsh, are said to live to a ripe old age despite a relative lack of health care. And the reason? Research suggests it’s the food they eat that keeps them in good health. Their staple foods, which consist mainly of fresh fruit and vegetables, are known to be beneficial to anyone who eats them in sufficient quantities. This may explain the paradox that people living in rural areas of European Mediterranean countries smoke heavily and have poor access to medical care, but generally survive to a good age. X. The Origins of Policing. 1. In early times Britain was settled by waves of different invaders. Among the last of these were the Anglo-Saxons. When they settled in England they lived in small communities, that is, in villages rather than in towns. They brought their own customs and laws to protect people and their property. According to the Anglo-Saxon custom, if someone broke the law it was not just a crime against the victim, but a crime against the whole community. 2.The Anglo- Saxon kings expected their people to keep good order, and this they called keeping the peace. A crime was an act against the peace, and some of the more serious crimes were said to be against the King’s Peace. Gradually the idea grew that all crimes were against the King’s Peace. 3. Under Anglo-Saxon rule, it was the duty of the citizens themselves to see that the law was not broken, and if it was, to catch the offenders. All the males in the community between the ages of twelve and sixty were responsible for this duty. They were organized in groups of about ten families and each group was called a tything: at their head was a tythingman. Each member of the tything was held responsible for the good behaviour of the others. If one member of the tything committed a crime, the others had to catch him and bring him before the court, or the moot as the Saxons called it. If they failed to do so, they were all punished, usually by paying a
fine. In a way, the tythingman is a very early ancestor of the policeman, because it was his duty to see that the King’s Peace was kept. If anyone saw a crime, he raised a hue and cry and all men had to join in the chase to catch the criminal, and bring him to trial before the court. 4. For minor offences, people accused of crimes were brought before the local folk moot. More serious cases went to the hundred court, headed by a hundredman or reeve, or the shire court which came under the shire reeve, or sheriff as he came to be known. The sheriff was responsible to the King for the peace of the whole area. In an emergency, the sheriff could call out the posse comitatus – all the available men in the shire. X.
