Text Half а mile fromhome, at the far edge of the woods where the land was highest, а great pine tree stood. ТЬе top of this ancient tree towered above аВ the others and made it visible for miles and miles. Sylvia had always believed that whoever climbed to the top of it could see the осеап. Now she thought bf the tree with а new excitement. Why, if she climbed at dawn, \\/ould she not Ье аЫе to see thewhole world, and discover where the white Ьегоп flew, and find its hidden nest? _ What ап adventure! As she lay awake in Ьег bed, she thought of the glory and triumph of telling everyone the secret of where the Ьегоп hid. Sylvia knew Ьег mother and Ьег quests were fast asleep, so she crept out of the house and followed the path through the woods. Tlle air was filled with the sleepy songs of half-awakened birds. ТЬеге was the huge tree, seeming to sleep in the fading moonlight. Sylvia bravely began to climb, the blood racing through her veins, her Ьаге hands and feet gripping the bark. First she had to сНтЬ the oak tree that grew alongside. Sylvia felt her way easily. She had often climbed t11ere before, and knew that high~r ир опе of the oak's иррег branches rubbed against the pine trunk. Whеп she reached it, the way was harder than she had thought. The sharp twigs scratched her and the sticky pine sap made her little fingers clumsy and stiff. ТЬе tree seemed to grow taller as she climbed, and she began to doubt if she could reach her goal before dawn. But Sylvia passed the last thorny branch, her face shining with triumph as she stood at the very top, weak and shaking with exhaustion. There was the sea, dazzling in the first morning light. Two hawks flew east, so far below her she felt she, too, might fly away among the clouds. ТЬе birds ~ung louder and louder until the sun сате ир.

At first тапу peopJe thought this was ajoke, especiaJJy the British, who seerned to assurne that the widespread understanding of their language rneant а corresponding understanding of English custorns. Very soon t11ey had to сЬаngе their ideas, as they realized that they had а lot to Jearn about how to behave with their foreign business friends. For exampJe: ТЬе British аге Ьарру to have а business lипсЬ and discuss business rnatters with adrink during the rneal; the Japanese prefer
not to work while eating. Lunch is а tirne to relax and get to know one another, and they rarely drink at lunchtirne. ТЬе Gerrnans like to talk business before dinner; the French like to eat first and talk afterwards. ТЬеу have to Ье well fed and watered before they discuss anything. Taking off уош jacket and rol1ing ир уош sleeves is а sign of getting down to work in Britain and Holland, but in Сеrrnапу people regard it as taking it easy. Arnerican executives sornetirnes signal their feeling of ease and irnportance in their offices Ьу putting their feet оп the desk whilst оп the telephone. In]apan, people woufd Ье shocked. Showih.g the soles of уош feet is the height of bad rnanners. It is а social insult only exceeded Ьу blowing уош nose in public. ТЬе ]apanese have perhaps the strictest rules of social and business behaviour. Seniority is very irnportant, and а younger rnan should never Ье sent to cornplete а business deal with an older J apanese rnan. ТЬе J apanese business card alrnost needs а rulebook of its own. Уои rnust exchange business cards irnrnediately оп rneeting because it is essential to establish everyone's status and position. When it is handed to а person in а superior position, it rnust Ье given and received with both hands, and уои rnust take tirne to read it carefully, and notjust put it in уош pocket! Also а bow is а very irnportant part of greeting sorneone, Уои should not expect ]apanese to shake hands. Bowing the head is а rnark of respect and the first bow of the day should Ье lower than when уои rneet thereafter. ТЬе Arnericans sornetirnes find it difficult to accept the rnоге forrnal Japanese rnanners. ТЬеу prefer to Ье casual and rnоге inforrnal, as illustrated Ьу the universal "Have а nice day!' Arnerican waiters have а one-word irnperative 'Enjoy!' ТЬе British, of course, аге cool and reserved. ТЬе great topic of conversation between strangers in Britain is the weather - unernotional and irnpersonal. In Arnerica, the rnain topic between strangers is the search tofind а geographical Jink. 'ОЬ, геаНу? Уои live in Ohio? 1had ап uncJe who опсе worked there.'

'When in Romе do as the Romans do. ' Here are some final tips for travelers. Iп France уои shouldn't sit down in а cafe until уои'уе shaken hands with everyone уои know. Iп Afghanistan уои should sредd at least· Нуе minutes saying hello. Iп Pakistan уои mustn't wink. It is offensive. Text How соте it is so difficult to find Engl"ish fсюd in England? In Сгеесе уои eat Greek food, in France French food, in Italy Italian
food, but in England , in any High Street in the land, it is easier to find Indian and Chinese restaurants than English ones. In London уои сап eat Thai, Portuguese, Turkish, Lebanese,]apanese, Russian, Polish, Swiss, Swedish, Spanish, and Italian - but where аге the English restaurants? It is not only in restaurants that foreign dishes аге replacing traditional British food. In every ~upermarket, sales of pasta, pizza and poppadoms аге boorning. Why has this happened? What is wrong with the cooks of Britain that they prefer cooking pasta to potatoes? Why do the British choose to eat lasagne instead of shepherd's pie? Why do they now like cooking'in wine and оНуе oil? But perhaps it is а good thing. After аН, this is the end of the twentieth century and we сап get ingredients frorn аН оуег the worLd injust а few hours. Anyway, wasn't English food always disgusting and tasteless? Wasn't it always boiled to death and swimrning in fat? ТЬе answer to this question is а resounding 'No' , but to understand this, we Ьауе to go back to before World War П. ТЬе British Ьауе in fact always irnported food from abroad. Frorn the Нте of the Roman invasion foreign trade was а rnajor influence оп British cooking. English kitchens, like the English language, absorbed ingredients frorn аН оуег the world - chickens, rabbits, apples, and tea. АН of these and more were successful1y incorporated into British dishes. Another irnportant influence оп British cookil1g was of сощsе the weather. ТЬе good 01d British rain gives us rich soil and green grass, and means that we аге аЫе to produce sorne of the finest varieties of meat, fruit and vegetables, which don't need fancy sauces ог complicated recipes to disguise t11eir taste. However, W orld War II chal1ged everything. Wartirne women had to forget 600 years of British cooking, learn to do without foreign imports, and ration their use of home-gfОwп food. ТЬе Ministry of food published сЬеар, boring recipes. ТЬе joke of the war was а dish caHed Woolton Pie (named after the Minister for Food). This consisted of а mixture of boiled vegetables covered in \\'hite sauce with maslled potato оп the top. Britain never managed to гесоуег from the wartime attitude to food. We were left with а loss of cOl1fidence in ош cooking skills and after years of Ministry

recipes we began to believe that British food was boring, and we searched the world for sophisticated, new dishes which gave hope of а better future. The British people Ьесаmе tourists at their own 'dining tables and in the restaurants of their land! This is tragedy! Surely food is as much а part of ош culture as ош landscape, ош language, and ош literature. Nowadays, cooking British food is like speaking а dead language. It is almost as bizarre as having а conversation in Anglo-Saxon English! However, there is still опе small гау of hope. British pubs аге often the best places to eat well and cheaply in Britain, and they also increasingly try to serve tasty British food. Сап we recommend to уои ош two favourite places to eat in Britain? The Shepherd's Inn in Melmerby, Cumbria, and the Dolphin Inn in Kingston, Devon. Their steak and mushroom pie, Lancashire hotpot, and bread and butter pudding are three of the gastronomic wonders of the world! А1.
The writers believe that British cooking... 1. has always Ьееп very ~ad. 2. was good until World War П. 3. is good because it is so international.
А2.
They say that the British... 1. eat only traditional British food in their homes. 2. don't like cooking with foreign ingredients. 3. Ьиу lots of foreign ingredients.
АЗ.
They say that the British weather... 1. enables the British to produce good quality food. 2. often ruins fruits and vegetables. 3. is not such ап important influence оп British food as foreign trade. А4.
They say that World War 11 had а great influence оп British cooking because... 1. traditional British cooking was rediscovered and some good cheap recipes were produced.
2., people had limitless supplies of home-grown food. 3. people started to believe that British food was boring, so after the war they wanted to cook more interesting and international
dishes. А5. ТЬеу say that ...
1. British tourists try lots of new dishes when they are abroad. 2. nowadays it is very unusual for British people to cook Bri6sh food. 3.literature and language age more culturally important than food.
А6. The writers' final conclusion about British cooking is that ... 1. there is по hope. 2. уои will only Ъе аЫе, to get British food in expensive
restaurants. 3. уои will Ье аЫе to get more good traditional British dishes, especially in pubs.

Text How would уои like to live {п а castle, а tree house.or even underground? This might not Ье as unusual as уои might think. 1t seems that these days тоге and тоге people want to live somewhere special out of the ordinary, and if they can't Ьиу \vhat tlley wallt they аге quite prepared to build it from scratch. For ]оЬп Mew and his wife]osephinetheir Ьоте геаНу is acastle. ТЬеу have built their own Ellglish castle in the Sussex countryside. ТЬе building is brand new with аН the luxuries you would expect from а house that .cost тоге thап 350,000 poullds to build . However, whеп you first see it from the outside it would Ье easy to thiпk that уои аге lookillg at ап апсiепt топuтепt. ТЬе building has а 10t of the features of а traditional castle, including а tower, а moat and а drawbridge. "Му choice ofhouse is somewhat eccentric and building it was very hard wo~k, but we've got the perfect place to li,,'e," Mew says. Although some would say that the building is impractical and
тау Ье cold in harsh БгitisЬ \vinters, Ье certainly has got а unique alld spacious Ьоте. If уои don't 100k carefully, уои migbt поt еvеп see tl1e Ьоте that ] onathan Ridley-]ones and Shanllon Ridd bllilt at аШ Tbat's because the bouse is а COllverted water tank. ТЬе опlу thing that could Ье seen fгom the surface is а door leading into the hillside. "We've never wanted to live in ап ordinary house," Shапоп says. "Livillg below ground means tllat ош Ьоте is quiet and very cosy - попе of the usual draughts. It" doesn't damage the 10cal surroundings and has very 10w fuel bills.
