The Prophecy The Crown Prince Vaughan shall marry a noble girl From the land of Scollfyld, born in this year, Once the girl reaches 21. The virgin bride shall be chosen by the eldest Oracle that year. The Chosen shall stand by the Prince’s side, as he unites countries and rules an empire. Chapter One
Caroline raced down the hall as fast as she could go. Her long hair flew behind her, hitting her back with each step. She thought she could feel the guards coming. If she could close her eyes, she could envision them on the backs of her lids. She could imagine the weapons they’d be carrying: probably spears and swords, and maybe even a mace. She could almost feel the heavy, spiked ball swinging into her skull. Worse still, the evil Other could be just behind her, waiting to sink his fangs into her flesh. As Caroline ran, another biting thought stayed with her. Where was Sophie? What were they doing to her sister?
Gasping, Caroline Haley bolted upright in bed. She placed one hand over her heart, chest heaving with effort as though she had truly been running for her life. Trembling with fright, she took several deep breaths, trying to calm herself. Emily, her handmaiden, came rushing into the room from the adjacent chamber. “My lady, I heard you scream. Are you all right?” Emily’s thin, pale face was drawn with worry. “Was it another dream?” “Yes,” said Caroline, “the same one as last time. It was terrible.” Emily gave her a sympathetic smile and patted her hand, which lay trembling on the duvet, before stepping over to pull the drapes open. As the sunlight began to shine in, Emily said, “Odd. I think your sister had a nightmare, as well. I heard her walking the halls earlier this morn.” “Sophie, having a bad dream?” Caroline began to kick the covers down so she could get out of bed. “She is never disturbed while sleeping.” Emily shrugged. “But these are not exactly normal times, milady, as you well know. I am nearly finished preparing your trunk for this afternoon. Will your light green gown be suitable for the Choosing, or would you prefer the pink?” Caroline shook her head. “I don’t even know, Emily. I can barely think. I need some fresh air. Would you please pack both, and I can decide when we arrive?” “Yes, certainly, Miss.” Emily nodded. I’ll get your morning toilette ready.” As Caroline splashed warm water on her face, she thought about how right Emily was about the times being different. Today was the day every Scollfyldian girl of age, born of noble blood, had been waiting for. Waiting not with anticipation or excitement, but rather with both curiosity and dread. This day was so important that King Victor had expressly forbidden any girl born in 1761 to marry before the Choosing. This, of course, disturbed the natural order of things, as younger sisters then had to wait for their older sisters to be married off. And young men across the country went without a bride for a time. All of this was despite the fact that only ten girls from the best families in the land would be standing for the Choosing. Though, since the drawing of the names had only happened last week, Caroline
supposed it made sense. She still couldn’t grasp the fact that her name had been drawn. The Fates had a definite hand in her life. After drying her face, she allowed Emily to help her into a morning dress of plain, white cotton. Then, she headed down the grand stairs of her home, trying to avoid running into her parents or any servants. Caroline grabbed her cloak off the hook beside the door and pulled it over her shoulders to shelter herself from the chilly morning air. She stepped quickly out the door and into the yard. Once she turned the corner past the stables and knew she could no longer be seen from the front of the manor house, she took off running. It felt so nice to let her hair fly behind her and lift up her long skirts to free her legs. Through the meadow beyond her home she ran, flying through the knee-high weeds and flowers. Giggling, she slowed as she reached where the meadow met the forest’s edge. He was there waiting for her already, and he smiled wide when he saw her. Caroline’s heart pounded from the combination of her run and seeing her secret lover. “Lady Caroline, what ever would your father say if he saw you running? Aren’t ladies supposed to be docile and quiet?” Luke Stone called to her, raising his arms into a laughing shrug. He looked so handsome and strong, standing in the speckled sunlight beneath the canopy of leaves. The light shone off his dark blonde hair, and it complemented his skin, tanned from hunting and other manly pursuits. She sped up again, and ran straight into his arms with such force that it nearly knocked the two of them to the ground. He wrapped his arms around her small waist and lifted her up to his face. His sky blue eyes smiled into hers, and he pressed his mouth against her lips hungrily. Softly, he set her back on the ground, and Caroline ran her hands up his neck and into his wavy hair. Gripping it, she pulled him harder into her and he slowly guided them first to their knees, and then to the ground. Caroline felt her head sink into a soft pile of leaves and didn’t care that her hair would be mussed. She just wanted the feel of Luke’s lips on hers, and she would do anything to have more time with him. “Mmm,” she moaned into his mouth, “I have missed you so.” Luke rolled his body on top of hers without breaking their lip lock, and brushed his hands deep into the tresses of her hair. “I have missed you as well, my lady. I loathe when my duties tear me away from you.”
She felt his body stiffening, and knew he must be thinking the same thing: that tonight’s events could possibly pull them apart permanently. Shaking her head, she decided to focus on the moment. As they continued to kiss, she lazily traced her hands down his back, and then up under his white linen shirt. Caroline loved the feel of his warm flesh on her, and she gently ran her nails across him until she felt gooseflesh rise. Luke released a low groan and began kissing his way down her face and to her neck. Softly, he licked the skin of her collarbone, and planted a trail of tiny kisses to her chest. His lips moved over the soft, swelling skin where her breasts met her bodice. With one finger, he gently tugged the fabric down. “Lord Stone, whatever are you doing?” Caroline whispered coquettishly. Luke grinned and let his hand travel down into her dress and under her thin chemise to find the small, hard nipple of her right breast. He squeezed, and Caroline sighed with pleasure. She brought her hand to the side of his face and traced her fingers down along his mouth. He sucked one of her fingers in, and swirled his tongue around it in time to the pressure of his fingers on her breast. “Oh god.” Caroline moaned as he released her finger and ducked his head back toward her body. Roughly, he pulled the fabric of her dress down, nearly ripping it at the seams, to expose both of her breasts. He swirled his tongue from one erect nipple to the other, lavishing each with attention. “Raise your skirts.” He commanded her, his mouth against her breast. Caroline knew Luke respected her enough to not take things farther than they should go, and she happily complied. He twisted his hand through the layered fabric of her gowns until he found where she wanted him most: her wet, waiting hole. Caroline let her head roll back as his fingers slipped and slid along her moist folds, occasionally dipping just the tip of a finger into her. They had done this dance many times before, and the wanting never lessened. It never got easier to stop before they went too far, though they always somehow managed to. To not stop would be spitting in the face of Fate itself. While he stroked her, Caroline let her mind wander into daydreams, wondering if they could go farther. She imagined undoing Luke’s trousers and letting them fall. Imagined seeing the muscles of his bare thighs, and running her tongue from his stomach to his manhood. She would suck him into her mouth, as she had done many
times before, but instead of taking his salty cum into her throat, Caroline would guide him down to her dripping cunny. She would spread her legs wide, so wide, and watch as he lined himself up to her hole. Then, he would lower his hard naked body onto hers. And he would thrust, filling her up, taking her virginity, and stroking her pussy from the inside with his hard cock until she screamed for mercy. The combination of her own naughty thoughts and Luke’s insistent rubbing brought Caroline to orgasm, and she had to bite her lip to avoid crying out and attracting attention. Burrowing her head into his neck as her breathing calmed, she whispered, “Now it’s your turn, Lord Stone.” Luke lay back in the grass, undid his pants, and pulled them down past his knees. His manhood jutted upward, even thicker than Caroline remembered. Kneeling like a supplicant, she leaned over and took him as far as she could into her mouth. Sighing with pleasure, Luke slid one hand into the thickness of her hair and began guiding the speed of her head. Caroline felt his tensing and knew their previous tumble must have brought him to the edge. Focusing on bringing him to orgasm, she put one loose fist around his shaft and moved it in time with her mouth. As his whole lower body clenched, Luke cried out, “Caroline!” and then she felt his cum shoot from his cock and down her throat. With a satisfied smile, she swallowed and lay down in the crook of his arm. On the soft grass with Luke, Caroline was able to forget for a moment that in just a few hours, she would be on her way to the Scollfyld Palace for the Choosing.
Chapter Two Sloane Vaughan glanced out the carriage window, being careful to keep his face obscured by the curtain. As they passed through the village on the way to the palace Scollfyld, he could see eager and curious faces straining to get a glimpse of him. These were the lower villagers, those who would not have been invited to the Choosing. Anyone who had would already be at the castle awaiting his arrival. He watched as the carriage rolled by slowly, imagining what they were whispering behind their hands. Most, if not all, of the villagers would have never seen a vampire. Because of this, they would blindly believe whatever they heard about them. Sloane’s favorite rumor was that that Others couldn’t walk in the daylight. He snorted to himself, thinking on the fact that long walks in the afternoon were among his favorite activities. Bored and tired from the half a day’s journey, he wished his nerves would allow for him to sleep. Beside him, Wilhelmina the Oracle was snoring softly. She, apparently, had no trouble drifting off. Sloane shook his head in disbelief when he realized that he was supposed to trust this strange little bag of bones with his future. He sighed. Reaching across the carriage with his foot, he tapped the boot of his father, Edmund. Startled from his own thoughts, he looked up at Sloane. “Yes, Son?” he asked. “I don’t understand why it has to be done this way.” Sighing, Edmund shook his head. “Sloane, we have known this since you were four years old. This is the prophecy. This is the path Fate chose for you. Don’t you wish to lead your country and rule a united empire?” Not particularly, thought Sloane. But no one had ever asked what he truly wanted, and after twenty-five years of living under this looming prophecy, he wasn’t even sure himself. “All right, Father. So, tell me again, how did they choose which girls to offer?” This topic was something Edmund was much more interested in talking about, and he sat up with great enthusiasm. “The names of every girl of age from every noble family in the country were pooled together. Then, ten names were drawn, as the Fates would will it so. The King’s own daughter, Princess Eleanor, is
among them. Her beauty apparently rivals that of any other girl in the land.” At that, Sloane rolled his eyes. As if being beautiful was the only requirement of marriage. Great beauties, especially in the world of Others where no one aged past thirty, weren’t hard to come by. And some women seemed to think they could go through life with only the knowledge of how to bat their eyelashes at the right time, or the correct pitch of a tinkling laugh. Sloane wanted someone he wouldn’t tire of in only a few years. After all, his lifespan was hundreds of years. Why spend it with someone who had no spirit or character? He wanted, or rather needed, to be happy. The procession of carriages from Bernehart passed onto the castle grounds of the royal family of Scollfyld, and Sloane prepared himself for the event that was to come. The Choosing was twenty-one years in the making, and he was about to find out what bride the Fates had in store for him.
Chapter Three Caroline, dressed in the light green gown after all, hugged Sophie tightly. She didn’t even loosen when her sister tried to pull away. It was as though clinging to Sophie would prevent Caroline from having to fulfill her duty as her father’s daughter. Today was one day when Caroline found herself wishing she hadn’t been born the daughter of a duke –– if she were a peasant girl, perhaps the daughter of a shepherd, she wouldn’t be in this uncertain situation. Instead, she would be tending sheep and lazily wandering the meadow in her free time. “Please don’t leave me,” she whispered, as she finally let her arms fall free. Sophie looked at her, and her solemn face was full of sympathy. Caroline stared at her twin, which was like looking in a mirror––except for the eyes. Sophie had light blue eyes, whereas her own were bright green. But the slight figure, pale skin, and wavy chestnut hair were her exact copy. Over the years, their mother had felt she was doing them a service by telling the twins that they weren’t stunning beauties. Especially compared to her own good looks. To Elise, her daughters had no chance of securing a husband based on appearance alone, so she worked hard to ensure they were schooled in every ladylike practice possible. Caroline had to concede that her mother may be correct about their looks, but she also knew that she and Sophie were attractive in their own way. There was something about their faces that gave them character, and they were always among the most popular at balls. “Tell Luke,” she began, her voice breaking. “Please, tell Luke, that no matter what happens, he means so much to me.” Sophie nodded fiercely, wrapping her arms around herself. Emily appeared in the doorway of Caroline’s chambers. “Miss, it’s time.” Caroline kissed her sister’s cheek and followed Emily, leaving Sophie to join the audience on her own. The great hall was filled to capacity, and the air was stale and warm. Caroline was so nervous that she missed a step and nearly tripped on her way up to the stage. A man waved her into place, and she ended up standing between Princess Eleanor and Lady Anne von Heilsburg. Both girls were her childhood playmates, and she felt conspicuous and odd as she stood with them. Eleanor flashed her a
small, quick smile. It was just a slight upturn of her lips, but Caroline found some comfort in knowing that the other girls must feel strangely about this process as well. Once all ten girls were lined up, the Prince, King, and Oracle made their appearance. Caroline saw ladies in the crowd fanning themselves as the handsome men took the stage. The Prince was clean shaven and dark-featured. His short hair was as black as the rumors said it was, seemingly absorbing all light in the room. His eyes appeared black as well, though Caroline felt it couldn’t be true. He was taller than any other man present, at least a few inches over 6 feet. King Edmund was very similar in coloring, and even though he was well over one hundred years old, he looked only about a decade older than his son. Of course, Caroline told herself, that was the Others’ way of life. They aged until about thirty years of age, and then remained frozen in time. The two men stood at the far end of the stage, away from the girls. The wizened Oracle needed assistance getting up the steps, and her back was so hunched that she looked like she was bending over. “Everyone, silence,” King Victor announced. “It is time for the Choosing.” As he retreated to the edge of the stage, he nodded at the two other royal men. As he did, Prince Sloane smiled politely at him and that’s when Caroline saw them. The teeth. In a mouth of sparkling and otherwise normal white teeth, were two long, vicious looking fangs. Fangs that would sink into the soft flesh of one of the girls present that very night. Feeling faint, she faltered a little and bumped into Eleanor. The Princess quickly reached an arm out to steady her. The two girls glanced about to see if anyone had noticed, but all eyes appeared to be on the Oracle, who was now waving a strange necklace over a goblet and chanting in a strange tongue. “I’m scared, too.” Eleanor whispered from the side of her mouth. “It’s okay.” The girls squeezed each other’s hands quickly, and then dropped their arms back to their sides. The Oracle was moving her way down the line of women, sizing them up and peering curiously into their eyes. Caroline heard the Princess whimper quietly when the old woman stroked one gnarled finger down her smooth, youthful cheek. The Oracle dropped her hand and turned abruptly to Caroline. The woman’s beautiful golden eyes, so out of place with the rest of her body, bored mercilessly into her own. Caroline worked hard to
keep her gaze steady, to do her family proud and not collapse under the stress and the fear. After what seemed like ages, the Oracle moved on to Anne, who was the last girl in line. She did the same to Anne, and then stepped back and surveyed the ten girls as a whole once more. Then, with one hand, she pointed out three girls. The first was Lady Elizabeth Hastings, the daughter of the Baron Hastings. Elizabeth stepped forward at the Oracle’s prodding. Caroline saw that the girl was visibly shaking. They had always been somewhat like rivals, but at the moment, Caroline felt awful for her. Next, the Oracle’s hand pointed directly at Princess Eleanor. Eleanor, to her royal credit, came forward with her blonde head held high. Caroline glanced towards King Victor and saw the worried determination in his face. To be the Chosen was a definite honor, but the idea of the Chosen having to become a vampire was a hard one to swallow for mortals. The Oracle raised her hand one last time, and her finger beckoned forth Caroline herself. Swallowing hard, Caroline stepped forward to join Elizabeth and Eleanor. It was so quiet that it seemed as though the audience had stopped breathing. The Oracle dipped her hand into the goblet and dabbed a droplet of clear liquid onto Elizabeth’s forehead. After a few seconds, she moved on and did the same to Eleanor. Then, she marked Caroline as well. Caroline expected the Oracle to step back, as she had with the other two girls, and move on to some new trial. But the woman didn’t move or speak for a solid minute. Then her wrinkled face moved into a toothless smile, and she stepped out from in front of Caroline. The reaction from the crowd was immediate. A slim, redheaded woman in the front fainted dead away but everyone was too busy staring at Caroline to move to help her. Caroline found Luke in the crowd and their eyes met briefly before he sadly cast his gaze to the ground. This was the unofficial end to whatever relationship they had. With terror in her heart, Caroline turned frantically to Eleanor and Elizabeth and pleaded, “What is wrong? Tell me, please.” Elizabeth couldn’t speak, and merely shook her head, not taking her eyes off of Caroline’s forehead. Eleanor’s beautiful violet eyes were wide with both wonder and concern. She raised one hand to the bodice of her dress, and said quietly, “You have the mark. You’re Chosen. It’s you.”
Before Caroline could even think, King Victor had moved in front of her, with King Edmund and Prince Sloane just behind him. The King held one hand out for hers, and said, “Lady Caroline Haley of Wallaceshire, the Oracle has selected you as the Chosen.” Timidly, and absolutely confused, Caroline placed her hand in his and he passed her to the strange royals. King Edmund embraced her: his arms were strong, but cold. He whispered into her ear, “We are so pleased to welcome you into our family. We’ve been waiting for you.” After he released her, Prince Sloane stepped up and enveloped her in his arms. Unlike his father, he didn’t say anything, merely smiled kindly and regarded her with those strange, black eyes.
Chapter Four The next few hours were a whirlwind, and Caroline scarcely had a moment to breathe, let alone think. Immediately following the Vaughan welcome, she was bundled off the stage and into a parlor where the Oracle washed her face with cool water and hummed a quiet tune under her breath. She didn’t speak a word to Caroline until she was done with her task. “Lady,” she wheezed in a throaty voice, “without question, you are the Chosen. You were destined, even before you were born, to marry the Prince. With you by his side, he shall accomplish great things. It is in the Fates that you should be happy together. However, with great joy, the Prophecy also brings great danger. I have told this to His Highness and His Majesty, and now I’m telling it to you. Evil will come after you. Men and women opposed to this match, opposed to this Prophecy, from Bernehart, Scollfyld, perhaps even all over the world, will try to stop it. I don’t know how, or when, or even exactly why. Just know that. The hope of the Prophecy lies in you and His Highness.” The Oracle stood shakily to her feet, and then the strange little woman hobbled out the door without waiting for Caroline’s reply. Caroline was alone in the room for a lengthy time before her parents, the Duke and Duchess Talbot Haley of Wallaceshire, and Sophie appeared. When the sisters saw each other, they clung together, not even breaking their embrace for their parents. Their parents stood frozen for a few moments, the Duke looking stern, and the Duchess happy but confused. “Well, Daughter,” said Talbot seriously, “You’ve made your mother and me very proud. Hasn’t she, Elise?” The Duchess nodded her blonde head regally. “Indeed, dear. I think most of the court expected the Princess to be Chosen, but of course, the Fates have their plans.” Caroline and Sophie finally ended their hug, and Sophie said, “We were so shocked to see the water turn blue on your forehead. Did it hurt?” Caroline shook her head. “No, I didn’t feel a thing. I didn’t know anything had happened until Eleanor told me she saw the mark.”
“They’re moving your chambers, Darling.” her mother informed her. “Of course, the betrothed of a Prince rates higher accommodations.” “But, I don’t want to be moved. I want to stay near Sophie.” “Now, Caroline,” began Talbot, “this isn’t a request. There is protocol that must be followed. Besides, you are twenty-one years old. It’s about time you and your sister learned to live independently of each other.” Caroline hated when her father took such a tone with her. As duke, he was well accustomed to ordering people around, and the girls had learned long ago not to argue with him. In addition to the healthy dose of fear they had of him, he was also the one who would make their marriage arrangements. If they had any hope of having any say in their husbands, they knew to stay in his good graces. Though, Caroline supposed, that was just Sophie’s problem now. She was already promised, or Chosen rather, to marry a vampire prince. This meant she had no hope of ever being with Luke, if she had wanted to marry him. Not knowing whose lot to lament more, Caroline just nodded her head in deference to her father. At that moment, Emily knocked timidly on the door and stepped in. She gave a quick curtsey to the Duke and Duchess, and said, “My lady, they have your chambers prepared. His Majesty, King Edmund, suggests you get your rest for the festivities tomorrow.” The Duke rose from his seat and gestured to Caroline. “Say good evening to your sister and mother, Daughter.” He gave her a firm pat on her shoulder and stepped towards the door. Elise kissed her daughter tenderly on the cheek. “I will see you in the morning for your final fitting, my dear.” And with that, the Duchess cupped Caroline’s face for a moment, and joined her husband. Sophie was much more demonstrative and threw herself into her sister’s arms, crying. The two girls had rarely been separated for much more than a few hours, and these new events were going to be very difficult for them. With a final squeeze, the sisters let go of one another.
Chapter Five Caroline was woken just after the sun came up by a number of handmaidens, ladies, Sophie, and her mother. “Up, up, up, Darling,” called Elise, clapping her hands quickly together. “Today is a very busy day. We have much to see to before our travels begin tomorrow.” One of the ladies, Lady Anne, moved to help Caroline out of bed and began to quickly undo the laces of her nightgown. While she did this, Sophie ran a brush through Caroline’s hair with swift, gentle strokes. Once Anne finished the laces, she helped Caroline slip her arms from the sleeves and step out of it. Long ago, Caroline had learned not to be embarrassed dressing in front of others, and when she was a lady-in-waiting, women undressing in front of her, but she was made nervous by the way they seemed to be serving her. Her mother sat gracefully on a settee, seeing over the ministrations. Someone brought in a tray of food and the Duchess urged Caroline to eat lightly and quickly. When Caroline was finished and ready to be re-dressed, Elise gestured quickly to the other ladiesin-waiting. They disappeared into the adjacent parlor and returned carefully carrying Caroline’s wedding gown. Every girl who was to stand for the Choosing had their wedding gown made well ahead of time. The ones who weren’t Chosen would merely use them for whoever they ended up marrying. Caroline had been unhappy during the first fitting, but she couldn’t deny the beauty of the gown. It was primarily white, with threads of gold running through it and gold trim on the full sleeves, neckline, and skirt. The bodice was lined with tiny pearls and ribbons. The train was incredibly long, and made of a delicate lace. The gown was handed over to Anne, who was apparently to be her head lady-in-waiting, and Sophie and they lifted it above her head. Caroline needed help pushing her arms through the elaborate sleeves, and once that was done, Sophie began lacing her up. After she was completely dressed, Caroline sat down so Sophie and Anne could begin braiding white ribbon into sections of her hair, and then pinning it up at the crown of her head. Caroline, who preferred to wear her hair down and loose, hated having to sit still for the amount of time such preparations required. She let her
mind wander to the obvious thought looming: the fact that she was getting married. In just a few short days. To a man she had never even held a conversation with. Sighing quietly to herself, Caroline supposed that it could be a lot worse. Her friend, Lady Isabel Stout, had the misfortune of having to marry a man twice her age and three times her width. Isabel’s father had been deaf to her pleading for him to reconsider, and her wedding day had been dismal. At least Prince Sloane was handsome, even if it was in a dark, almost scary way. And she would have the distinction of becoming a princess, something not likely for a girl of her position. She just wished she knew what he was like, for he currently seemed terribly mysterious. When the women were finally finished with her hair, they pinned her long, lacy veil in and pushed her towards the gilded mirror in the center of the bedroom. Caroline hardly recognized herself. While she enjoyed being feminine, she wasn’t interested in wasting much time in decking herself out. So when she saw her elaborate hair piled atop her head, coupled with the exquisitely made dress, she nearly gasped in shock. She would make the most beautiful bride.
Chapter Six Caroline sat rigid beside Sloane at the table of honor at the feast of their betrothal. King Edmund was on Sloane’s other side. Princess Emma, Sloane’s younger sister, was to Caroline’s right. Not counting the past two days, Caroline had never even seen a vampire, let alone been near one. She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination or not, but she thought she could feel a coldness emanating from their bodies. Shuddering at the thought, Caroline wondered when she would have to be turned. Not a single member of the Vaughan royal family were eating, nor were any of the vampire guests in attendance. It was obvious to figure out who was or wasn’t an Other based on if they had a plate in front of them or not. Princess Emma had smiled at Caroline while they were being seated, but hadn’t said a word or looked her way since. Caroline didn’t know if the princess was merely quiet, or didn’t like her. Since they would be living in the same palace in a matter of just a few days, Caroline hoped that she could win the Princess’s favor and promised herself she would find out more about the mysterious and beautiful Other. At a table across the hall, Caroline could see her parents and sister. Sophie appeared melancholy and was picking at her meal. She decided then and there to sneak Sophie into her chambers at some point in the night, before or after the pre-determined Intimate visit from Sloane. The reminder of his visit sent chills up her spine. It was traditional in their part of the world that betrothed couples have at least one Intimate visit. Caroline’s mother had been vague on exact details, but from what she had gathered, Sloane was to visit her room and the two were to get to know one another better, both physically and emotionally. Elise had been very insistent, though, that Caroline was obviously not to lose her virginity until after the marriage ceremony. Caroline wasn’t sure how to feel about this. Sloane seemed kind enough, and was wonderful to look at, but he was different from her and it was obvious. She wished she knew more about whatever the process would be, and when it would occur. Her thoughts were interrupted when King Edmund stood up and tapped his chalice. “I would like to express my deep gratitude for the cooperation of the people of Scollfyld. Our countries will stand together as pillars
of the world, and you may always depend on us as allies. Your willing gift of your daughters for the Choosing, and eventually, the discovery of the Chosen, made it possible for our lands to come together. To my son, Sloane, and his bride, the future Princess Caroline, I wish you the world and I bless you.” As Edmund raised his glass, so did everyone else in the hall. Caroline felt her face heat up as she blushed from the attention, then Sloane nonchalantly patted her knee. It was a bizarre feeling, the warmth of her face and the icy coolness of his hand at odds with one another. Looking at him from the corner of her eye, she could see his face tilted, curiously looking her over. Unsure, Caroline gave him a slight smile and his nearly black eyes sparkled with humor as he smiled back. She decided that he must have a playful spirit, and that eased her nerves. Deciding then and there that she would get to know him as best she could before the wedding, she tried to calm her nerves about that night’s visit.
Chapter Seven The room was dark, except for a single candle on the bedside table. Caroline sat in the middle of the bed, in only a thin silk chemise, with her arms wrapped around her knees. She tried to quell the shaking in her body, but she was more scared than she had ever been in her twenty-one years of life. Despite knowing it was ridiculous she still wished she didn’t have to be alone at this moment. Sophie had accompanied her to her chambers after the feast to help Caroline prepare. But after assisting in dressing, and then brushing out her sister’s hair, she had to leave. Caroline would even take an audience of curious onlookers over the quiet, over the nervous wait. Trying hard to find the determination she had at the feast, she found herself faltering now. First, Caroline heard a creak of the floor outside her chambers, and then the door opened slowly. A tall shadow stood in the frame, lit from the back by the candles in the hall. “Lady Caroline?” the voice asked, deep and rich with a youthful undertone. “Yes, I’m here,” she said back, quietly. Sloane stepped into the room and closed the door behind him, leaving them both in the dim light of the single candle. “May I?” he asked, gesturing towards the bed. Caroline nodded, not sure what else to do. Refusing one’s betrothed, let alone a prince, was unheard of. Possibly even treasonous. It wasn’t that she didn’t like him or anything, she was merely in shock from the suddenness of the whole arrangement. And Luke was the only man she had ever been intimate with. The thought of not having to worry about preserving her virginity soon was a strange one. Sloane sat on the edge of the bed and placed his hands on his knees. “Are your chambers to your liking?” he asked casually, as though trying to ease into conversation. “Oh yes, your Highness, they are wonderful.” He turned towards her, placing one hand on the bed to steady himself. “Please,” he said. “Just call me Sloane.” His face in the low light was even more handsome and his expression was completely sincere. “Very well, Sloane.” “And may I call you Caroline?” he asked.
Caroline was amused that he felt the need to ask, being a prince and all, and nodded yes. She hadn’t removed her lock on her knees, and faltered. “Are you all right?” he asked. “Would you like me to leave?” Caroline shook her head frantically. She would die of embarrassment if word got out that Sloane had left her room after only a minute of Intimate visit. Not even wanting to begin to imagine the tongues that would be wagging with that delicious bit of gossip, she reached a hand toward him and said, “No, please don’t. It’s just that, I’ve…well, I’ve never been around your kind before.” Sloane shifted his gaze down. “Yes, most people are nervous around, uh, my kind.” Feeling bad about using that term to describe him, she replied, “Your Highness, I mean, Sloane, I didn’t mean to say I don’t like you or don’t want to be near you. And it’s not only that you’re an Other. It’s that, well, I…” As she trailed off, too modest to finish the sentence, he looked back up at her. “I know you’re a virgin, Princess. Every citizen of both Bernehart and Scollfyld knows. After all, that was the Prophecy, correct?” It felt as though all the blood in Caroline’s body rushed into her face. Of course he knew, everyone knew. She felt silly and childish. She cleared her throat and said, “I’m not completely innocent, though.” His lips curled in amusement, and he shook his head slightly. “Oh, of course not, dear Lady. Surely, you’ve had your youthful romances. As have I, naturally.” This made her feel slightly better, to have him know that she wasn’t absolutely naïve. But, then, the thought of something else began to tug at her. “Sloane, may I ask a question?” His smile widened, and she could see his fangs glinting in the candlelight. “Of course, you needn’t have to ask.” Gulping softly, she whispered, “Is it true? What they say about Others?”
Sloane’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?” “I mean, as in seduction. I’ve heard tales my whole life of vampires being able to take anyone to bed, willing or unwilling.” Sloane straightened up. “It’s true. That is an ability my kind possesses. But I have never used it. Nor would I use it on you. I want you to want to be my wife, Caroline. I want you to be happy. The prophecy means nothing if our union is a farce.” Caroline worried she had offended him. He looked so serious and melancholy when replying to her. Being an Other in a world filled mainly with mortals couldn’t be easy. She raised a hand and slid it behind his ear, then down his cheek. His skin felt cool to the touch, but not strange in any other way. Along his chin, she felt the coarseness of his stubble and smiled to herself. She loved this manly aspect, and she loved his words. He wanted them to be happy together. Her nervousness was slowly melting away. Sloane leaned close to Caroline’s face. She felt his eyes lock on hers and she leaned forward a little as well. Their lips met in an open kiss, and he slipped his tongue over hers. At first, kissing Sloane was an odd sensation. Where their tongues met, his mouth felt warm, yet she still sensed a sort of coldness. Perhaps it was his breath? It reminded Caroline of a few winters ago, when she burned her finger on a candle. Emily brought a bowl of snow for her to plunge her hand into. Only, that experience was painful, and this one was of pleasure. He ran his hand deep into her hair, tugging softly on her tresses as they pressed against each other. Slowly, she reclined into the bed, and Sloane followed her. He shifted so his body was on top of hers, and Caroline could feel the texture of his shirt on her breasts through her thin gown. As their mouths explored each other, Sloane let his hands roam from her hair down to her body. Timidly, Caroline slid her hands from his chest and up over his back. The muscles of his lean body were strong and sinewy. One of his hands found her breast, and he lightly pinched her nipple until it hardened into a pebble. Caroline let out a slow hum of arousal. Her weakness had always been a slightly rough touch on her breasts. Sloane must have taken this as a good sign, and slid his body down so his face was level to her chest. He nuzzled the nipple of her other breast with his lips until it rose to match the first one. Then, he returned to the first and sucked it, cloth and all, into his mouth. His fingers played along her thighs and then
slipped under her chemise, tracing their way up to the breast his mouth wasn’t focusing on. The combination of his skin on her bare flesh, and his mouth and the wet silk of her nipple made her arch her back in desire. Sloane sat up on his knees and motioned for her to do the same. Caroline obeyed, and he pulled her nightgown over her head, leaving her completely naked. She could feel herself blush and cupped her hands over her soft, bare breasts. “Don’t,” he said, taking her hands in his and lowering them to her sides. “You’re beautiful. Lay back.” Caroline obeyed, and he leaned down and began kissing his way from her mouth, down her neck, to her breasts, and then south across her stomach. He moved himself in front of her knees, and placed a hand on each one. “Spread your legs.” He commanded her, albeit gently. Confused, she kept her legs together. Caroline knew it was imperative that she remain a virgin until after they were wed. Did Sloane mean to go against the Prophecy? Smiling, Sloane shook his head. “My lady, have faith in me.” Deciding to trust him –– after all, he would be her husband in just a few days –– Caroline opened her legs. Sloane lowered himself down between them and continued his kissing where he left off, down the curve of her hip and then toward her cunny. She felt his hair tickle the insides of her thighs and she started to giggle, but right at that moment, his kisses landed on her there. His tongue traced from the top of her slit to her secret hole. Her body tingled with the thrill of it. This was something she’d never done before, not even with Luke, for she felt it was too easy to get carried away. Switching up the pressure, he alternated between long slow licks and short, soft kisses on her pussy. Then, he slid his tongue upwards and focused on what Caroline called her rosebud. Occasionally, in the dark of night and in the privacy of her bed, she would touch herself there until her legs tingled and her cunny tightened. As he circled his tongue and fingers on her, Caroline felt the familiar rising in her lower stomach, a sign that she was going to cum soon. She tensed her legs around his head and turned into her pillow to avoid crying out loud.
Sloane sat up as she did, and pulled her in for a deep kiss. “I must be going, my lady. I await tomorrow’s journey. I am looking forward to you seeing my homeland.” Caroline smiled against his face. “I am as well. Good night, Sloane.”
Chapter Eight Minutes after Sloane left her room, Sophie came sneaking in. “Emily came to me as soon as she saw him leave. What happened?” She whispered, all the while feeling her way in the dark to the bed. She climbed in and snuggled under the covers with her sister. Sophie and Caroline talked over the night’s events in hushed tones, and eventually fell asleep curled up together as though still in the womb. A few hours later, the girls were startled awake by the sound of shattering glass. Blearily, Caroline sat up and rubbed her eyes. It was still dark outside and she could barely see her hand in front of her face. Suddenly, she felt an arm around her midsection, and a gloved hand across her mouth. She started to kick frantically as Sophie sat up and tried pulling her sister back. “There’s two of them!” exclaimed a deep, rough voice. Another male voice said, “Then get them both!” Someone dove onto the bed and grabbed Sophie. She was able to let out a single small shriek and then Caroline heard something muffle her voice. That was the last thing she heard before something cold and hard struck the back of her head, and she faded into blackness. Caroline was in the dream once more. Running for her life down a strange castle’s hall, heart beating fast enough to burst out of her chest. Her bare feet slapped painfully against the stone floor, and her hair flew behind her like a flag. Once more, she had a vague recollection of something having to do with Sophie, but she wasn’t behind her. Where was Sophie? And where was she? When Caroline came to, she was on the floor of a carriage with her arms and legs bound and a rag stuffed in her mouth. She had no idea how long she had been unconscious. Strands of her hair were stuck to her forehead, stiff with blood. Judging from the frantic hoof beats and the jarring force with which the carriage bumped along the road, she guessed they must be going at a breakneck speed. Just inches from her face was Sophie, bound and gagged in the same fashion. She was still out, and had a vicious-looking purple bump on her forehead. Caroline struggled to free herself, but the rope was too tight. Instead, she carefully kneed Sophie in the leg until her sister’s
eyes blinked open, and then widened in alarm as they took in the situation. Before either sister could attempt to communicate further, the movements of the carriage came to an abrupt halt. They heard a horse whinny, and the loud thumping of boots. The door swung open, and a masked man appeared. His arms were bulging with muscle, and he was wide enough to completely block the doorway. This man scooped Sophie up and carried her away. Caroline tried to scream through the cloth in her throat, and another man appeared to toss her over his shoulder. He handled her like a farm animal going off to be slaughtered.
Chapter Nine Sloane was just beginning to stir from sleep when Lord Chase, his gentleman of the bedchamber, came tearing into the room. “Your Highness!” he cried, far more undignified than Sloane had ever seen the nobleman. Sloane sat up and stretched his arms over his head. “Matthew, whatever is it, my good man?” Lord Chase hurried about the room, gathering Sloane’s clothing and shoes. “Prince Sloane, you must dress straight away. Your bride is gone.” Sloane’s head jerked back in surprise. “Gone? You mean she ran away?” It didn’t make sense to him. The last he had seen her, she seemed more than content to be the Chosen. He didn’t want to overestimate himself, but he thought she even may have begun to perhaps love him. “It appears the Lady and her sister, Lady Sophie Haley, were taken. The windows were broken and there are tracks outside. There was some blood on the duvet, and it appears as though the ladies struggled.” “Blood?” said Sloane, standing and quickly pulling on his clothes. “Bring me the duvet. Now.” Nodding, Lord Chase hurried away to follow the command. Sloane splashed cold water on his face, leftover from his nightly routine. He sat down on a chair and began to pull on his boots. Lord Chase returned, breathless, with the thick, white duvet. He handed it to Sloane, and Sloane could see the small blood stains. Bringing it to his nose, he sniffed hard and closed his eyes. The scent recall was so strong it nearly rocked him back. “It’s Caroline’s,” he murmured. Sloane shook his head viciously to bring him to his senses. “Bring forth my sword. Gather the best of our men and those brought from Scollfyld. Alert the stable boys to prepare the horses and carriages. And be quick about it. There’s no doubt the Scarclyfs have heard about the Choosing. Lord knows what they plan to do to Caroline.” The entire palace was in an upset. The twins’ father, the Duke of Wallaceshire, was demanding to be allowed to go on the rescue expedition. But Sloane adamantly refused, explaining that they
needed men trained in battle who were the most skilled on a horse. King Victor produced several of his best men, including Lord Luke Stone. And every Bernehart knight who had accompanied the Vaughan royal family volunteered their services. However, Sloane turned some away, insisting that the Palace must remain well guarded. By noon, the men were ready to ride, with Sloane leading the way to the Scarclyf castle on the edge of Bernehart.
Chapter Ten The girls found themselves in a dark, dank dungeon. The walls were rough stone, and they could hear water dripping from somewhere across the room. They huddled together for warmth, as they each had on only the nightgowns they were wearing when they had been snatched. “How long have we been here?” Sophie asked in a whisper, clinging to her sister even tighter. Caroline shook her head. “I have no idea.” She added, “Perhaps a day?” “I wonder what they’re going to do to us. Did you see the men in charge? They’re wicked Others.” Indeed, Caroline had seen the obvious leaders of the group. One had been called Alexandre and another was Mathias. The girls knew they had to be evil, for no Other in good standing with Bernehart royalty would have kidnapped them. Before either girl could say another word, the heavy door at the top of the stairs squealed open, and two of the men from earlier appeared. The men grabbed both resisting girls and dragged them up the dungeon stairs to the main level of the castle. From there, the girls were once again tossed over the shoulders of the large men and were carried up a grand, winding staircase to the second floor. They went down a corridor lined with closed doors until they arrived at the very end room, the only one with an open door. It appeared to be a formal parlor, with chaises and seats surrounding a massive fireplace. The men tossed the girls down on the floor in front of the Other called Mathias. “Master Scarclyf,” one of the men began, but he was cut off by the look on his master’s face and began backing up towards the door where a few other men waited and watched. “Silence. I’m still trying to comprehend how the lot of you could make such a mess. You had explicit instructions as to which room the Chosen would be in, yet somehow, here we are with two women?” Mathias Scarclyf circled both girls like a wolf toying with its prey. Caroline and Sophie gripped their hands tightly together as the dangerous vampire’s peculiar blood-red eyes raked over them. It was obvious that he was an evil Other. According to legend, the only way
a vampire’s eyes could turn that signature red would be if they subsisted entirely on human blood. Because of this, he also had the palest skin Caroline had ever seen on another person. He was tall, at least a foot taller than Caroline’s 5-foot-2-inch frame. His hair was white blonde, short, and wild. She could imagine him pacing the floors of his castle, raking his hands through his hair, and plotting her capture. Worst of all, he was incredibly handsome, in spite of the paleness and eye color. Or, perhaps, because of it. He had a dangerous air about him, and women were often drawn to some element of danger. “Very interesting.” he commented. “I would never have imagined that the Chosen would be a twin. Now, ladies, you can willingly tell us which of you is the Chosen. Or, you can make it hard on yourselves.” Caroline felt Sophie give her hand a quick squeeze, as though reassuring her that she would never throw her to this terrifying Other. The sisters remained silent and still. “Very well,” Mathias said, motioning one of his burly men forward. “I see we are going to have to force it out of you.” Mathias pointed at Sophie, and one of the guards who had brought the girls up from the dungeon snatched her free hand and began bending all of her fingers backward toward her wrist. Sophie screamed in pain as her hand contorted, and she twisted her body trying to get away. The sound of at least one of her fingers snapping was loud enough to be heard over her screams. Dropping Sophie’s other hand, Caroline rushed towards Mathias. “Please stop… I am the Chosen. Leave my sister be.” The guard released Sophie and she dropped to the ground clutching her injured hand to her chest, her face white as a sheet. “Caroline, no!” Smiling darkly, Mathias said, “So, Caroline. You’re the Chosen, eh?” Turning his attention, he made another quick gesture and the guard began dragging Sophie out of the room. “Stop!” Caroline cried. “I told you I’m the Chosen!” Mathias shook his head, grinning. “Indeed. That’s why I’m sending your sister and the guards out. We no longer have need of her, after all.” The other men and the guard dragging Sophie moved for the door and Caroline threw herself at them, trying to catch hold of her
sister. Mathias’s arm shot out and caught her square across the chest. Caroline felt as though she had hit a brick wall. Gasping, she took several steps back away from him and his inhuman strength. Still screaming, Sophie was carried out of the room and out of Caroline’s sight. The last guard leaving pulled the door shut behind him. Holding one hand to her chest, trying to catch her breath, Caroline cried out, “Please, don’t hurt her. Sophie has nothing to do with this.” Without saying a word, Mathias moved across the room and reached for a fire poker. A chill ran down Caroline’s back, but then he merely stoked the fire with it. “Why don’t you have a seat, Caroline?” He enunciated her name, as though rubbing in the fact that he wasn’t properly addressing her. Caroline stood her ground, and tried to keep her voice from shaking when she said, “I am fine standing, thank you.” She cringed after the “thank you” came out. Proper etiquette had been instilled in her since she was old enough to talk, but it felt bizarre to thank her own captor. Caroline resolved to keep herself from acquiescing to him any more. Mathias straightened up from the fireplace and turned back to face her. “That wasn’t really a request, Caroline.” Again with her name. Caroline felt her temper flare. None of the gentlemen in Scollfyld would be so incredibly improper. Of course, she supposed she couldn’t expect much from this type of Other. He drank human blood to sustain himself, even though it wasn’t necessary. Animal blood was in vast supply. Clearly, he was below manners and proper respect. Caroline shook her head and crossed her arms. Running his tongue along his teeth, Mathias paused for a second. And in the next second, he lunged in Caroline’s direction. He shoved her, and she went flying backward onto the chaise lounge behind her. Her head hit the back of the seat with a thud and she was dizzy for a moment and couldn’t think, let alone move. Mathias was on her in the next instant, tearing at her thin gown with raging abandon. His eyes, already disconcerting, were now terrifying in his fury. Her chemise was in shreds, the fabric pooled on the chaise around her body. She was now naked and trembling beneath him. Regaining her senses, Caroline started to struggle as best she could.
Her small frame and thin limbs were no match for the supernatural strength of an enraged Other. She squeezed her eyes tight as she flailed at him, fearing that at any moment, his fangs would sink into her flesh and drain her of her blood. Then, strangely, Mathias was still. Had she managed to fight him off? Caroline opened her eyes and he was staring at her, with a slight smile on his cruel, handsome face. It was as though he suddenly decided to switch tactics. “Caroline,” he said. “Caroline, Caroline, Caroline.” He ran his hand down her face. “You’re so beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, I can’t imagine how you’re the Chosen one. How you’ve managed to keep your virginity all these years.” Jerking her face away from his touch, Caroline reared her head back and did the most unladylike thing she’d ever done in her life. She spit directly in his face, and it landed below one eye. Mathias slapped her in the face with the same hand that had just been caressing it. It stung so badly that she had to bite her lip to avoid crying out. She wouldn’t grant him that pleasure. “You’re a feisty one, Caroline. I like that, at first. I’ll just have to put you in your place.” He wiped the saliva off with the back of his hand. Then he slipped his shirt over his head, revealing dense, white flesh. He looked as though he had been carved from marble. Mathias straddled her body, and took both of her wrists and pinned them above her head with one hand. Caroline jerked and struggled, but his strength was of stone. He even smiled at her vain attempts to free herself. With his free hand, he began undoing his trousers. Breath quickening as she realized what he meant to do, Caroline fought to think of a way to get out of the situation. “Imagine,” he murmured, seemingly to himself. “In one act, I can destroy the Prophecy and partake in the sweet pleasures of carnal delight. How I do love the pure blood of a virgin.” He let his free hand roam over her chest, and despite Caroline’s best efforts, her body naturally responded to his touch. When he felt the hardened nubs of her nipples, Mathias smiled. “Caroline. Caroline. Caroline. You’re so ripe and ready for the picking. I can smell your desire, Caroline. I can feel your body aching to be touched and explored. Twenty-one years is a long time. Caroline, I can show you pleasure you wouldn’t believe. By looking in your eyes, Caroline, I can see how badly you want a cock in your
pussy. How sometimes the wanting gets so much that you would thank someone if they just pushed you down and took it. I could do that right now, bend you over and shove my cock into you until you begged for mercy. And I can also show you the deepest depths of sensual pain. Tell me, sweet Caroline, do you choose pleasure or do you choose pain?” Mathias leaned down, his lips grazing her ear, “Caroline, delicious Caroline.” Then, without any warning, he nipped at the flesh of her collarbone. It was the strangest feeling. Caroline knew she should be terrified, even though he hadn’t broken the skin nor had he used his fangs. But some part of her, deep down in her lower stomach, felt thrilled. Her cunny began to tingle. What was happening to her? As he sighed her name once more, Mathias leaned back up and let his trousers sink down fully. There was something about the repetition of her name that struck a chord with Caroline. It was though each time he said her name, her resistance lessened and her body relaxed. It felt as though he became less evil to her by the minute. Then, with a sickening twist of her stomach, she realized that he must be using his powers of seduction. Trying to resist gagging, Caroline kept her eyes closed and focused on tuning out his voice and figuring out her escape. She felt his trousers loose and sagging towards her legs and she knew he must have his manhood out. In one fluid motion, Caroline slid her legs up from under him and then shoved her knees as hard as she could into the center of his body. Instinctively, Mathias released her arms to cover himself, and he rolled off the chaise, shrieking in pain. For such an evil man, he certainly wept like a child, Caroline thought as she sat up. She made an instant decision, and dove over the back of the chaise, landing on her knees and scraping them badly. With no time to check her injuries, she was up on her feet and throwing open the door before Mathias even stood up. She didn’t even bother to look over her shoulder as she fled into the hall and took off running. Suddenly, her dreams hit her. This was the hall. This was her running. And like in her dreams, all she could think about was where Sophie was. Where did they take her sister?
Chapter Eleven Caroline flew down the stairs and rounded the corner to go down the next corridor, where she ran straight into the brawny chest of a tall man, dressed all in black. His arms locked around her and Caroline started to scream, but he abruptly cut it off with one hand. “Lady Haley. Stop. It’s all right.” Being called by her proper title caused Caroline to pause, and she hung in his arms for a moment before tilting her head to look up. It was Lord Andrew Gifford, one of the knights in the same order as Luke. When he saw that she had calmed down, he released his hold on her body. Now that the adrenaline was dissipating, they both realized she was naked. Lord Gifford flushed with embarrassment, and at that moment, Luke appeared behind him. “My God, Caroline. What did they do to you?” Tugging his tunic over his head, he tossed it to her. He shot a look at Lord Gifford and said, “God’s thumb, man! Look away!” Caroline slipped on the tunic. It was long enough to be a dress on her, and she felt much better now that she was covered. “Mathias didn’t get a chance to do anything, Luke. I’m okay, just a little bruised. But the other men took Sophie somewhere.” At the mention of her sister’s name, both men shifted their faces to the ground. Caroline’s heart leaped with fear. They knew something she didn’t. Clasping her hands together to brace herself, Caroline asked, “What is it? Where is my sister?” Luke took a deep breath and motioned for her to follow him. He turned and walked down the corridor in long, serious strides until the three of them reached a room at the very back of the castle. It turned out to be a servant’s bedroom area. When Caroline stepped inside, all she could see was her sister, lying motionless across a small wooden bed with her limbs at all angles. Her right arm appeared to be broken at the elbow and the sight made Caroline’s eyes fill with stinging tears. This was her fault. Sophie’s nightgown was bloody and torn at the neck, and her eyes were nearly swollen shut. Lord Chase, Sloane’s right-hand man, was leaning over her and gently caressing her bruised face. Caroline stood in the doorway, stunned into immobility. Luke placed a hand on her shoulder and said,
“By the time we broke through the door, they had beaten her within an inch of her life. She was broken and bleeding. The only way for her to survive was to, well, was for her to be changed.” It didn’t make sense at first. “Changed?” Caroline asked. And then she saw it. Two evenly-spaced puncture marks on her sister’s neck, still lightly dripping blood. “Lord Chase had to suck her blood to make her an Other. Her wounds will heal fairly quickly, but she needs rest.” Caroline took a small step forward, and then asked in an unsteady voice, “Is she awake? Can she talk to me?” “No, my lady, she’s unconscious. But soon the Other blood will begin taking over and she will heal of her injuries within hours.” Lord Chase spoke, looking up from Sophie’s face to Caroline’s. “Can she make the trip without causing further harm?” asked Luke, beginning to pace the floor of the small room. Lord Chase shrugged. “Probably. She’s not going to die now that she’s been changed. It just won’t be very comfortable for her. I see no other option, though…we need to leave in case the Scarclyfs come back with reinforcements.” A noise from down the corridor made everyone in the room but Sophie startle. Lord Chase cocked his head at Luke and Lord Gifford, and the two men unsheathed their swords in an instant. With Luke in the lead, they edged past Caroline and peered out into the hall. “It’s Prince Sloane and the other men. They’re carrying him.” Luke said this last as he dashed out. Feeling faint, Caroline sat down on the first available surface, a plain wooden bench. In moments, Luke reappeared with three men, two of whom were holding up Sloane between them. His handsome face was badly scratched, and his lower lip was torn. Covered in blood from head to foot, he looked worse for the wear than Sophie did. One of the men carrying him also appeared to have some injuries. They slid Sloane to the floor, and then the injured man coughed out, “He killed Alexandre Scarclyf, but the rest of the clan along with their guards escaped.” “What of Mathias?” asked Luke. The other man who had helped to carry Sloane shook his head. “We found the room he had held Lady Haley in, judging from the torn
gown. But he was gone before we arrived. Gardyner, Lupton, Child, and Adams left immediately, to attempt to seek out their trail and follow them. They will send word once they find them.” “With this few men and these injuries, we are in no condition to fight if they do return.” Lord Chase said, “I’ll carry Lady Haley. Gifford, Archer, you two help the Prince. Manfield, you lead the way. Stone, will you stand guard for the other Lady Haley?” All five men, excluding Sloane, sprang into action. Feeling helpless, Caroline watched as Lord Chase gently scooped Sophie into his arms. Despite his obvious strength, he cradled her tenderly and if the timing wasn’t terribly inappropriate, she would have wondered if the man had somehow developed feelings towards her sister. Lord Gifford and Lord Archer each hooked one of Sloane’s arms around their shoulders. Lord Manfield, being the only one without someone to watch or carry, was the first out the door and had his sword in hand. Behind him followed Gifford and Archer with Sloane, then Chase and Sophie. Caroline and Luke brought up the rear, since they were the only ones not assisting an injured person. The group quickly made their way to the front of the house. When they paused to push the massive door open, Caroline asked, “Where are we going?” Luke gently pushed her through the door behind the rest. “We have carriages and horses hidden in the forest. Two men stayed behind with them.” The sky had darkened, and Caroline wondered exactly how long she had been out, and how many days they had been in the hands of the Scarclyfs. Carefully, they traveled through the castle yard and into the thickly wooded patch beyond it. Caroline swallowed hard as they stepped beneath the canopy of trees and lost most of the moonlight that had been guiding them thus far. “Do not worry,” Luke said, taking her hand with a friendly squeeze. “The carriages are waiting just straight through here.” Grateful for not only his kind words, but also his innocent touch, Caroline’s fear lessened and they continued the trek in silence. Luke was right, for after just a few more minutes of walking, they reached two Bernehart carriages. The men quickly and quietly loaded the injured Sloane into the first one, and then the still-unconscious Sophie into the second. Trying to make them as comfortable, they stretched the two out on the floor of the carriages, which meant at
least two men would have to ride on the box at the front. Caroline and Lord Chase climbed into the one carrying Sophie, and each stepped gently over her, and kept their feet up on the benches inside. The door was closed by one of the other men, and within minutes, the horses were carrying them away from the Scarclyf castle. Every sound made Caroline jump, for fear the Scarclyfs were on them. Eventually, the further they got away from the castle, the more she was able to relax.
Chapter Twelve They reached the Bernehart Palace just a little after dawn the next morning. Caroline didn’t sleep all night, choosing to stay awake and keep watch over her sister. Requiring much needed sleep, Lord Chase dozed off at her insistence. Sophie’s injuries were beginning to get much better, and it appeared as though her arm had even healed itself. Being the only one conscious in the carriage, Caroline had a lot of time to think. She wondered how Sloane’s wounds were doing. Until she had seen him being carried down the hall, so hurt he couldn’t even speak, she hadn’t realized how deeply they had bonded in their short time together. Not even being in Luke’s presence affected her. As she peered out from behind the curtain at the rising sun, Caroline understood that what she had with Luke was childhood friendship that blossomed into a physical romance. It was fun while it lasted, but now that she was older, Sloane was what she needed. Luke would always be a boy to her, and Sloane was a man. She would be eternally grateful for Luke’s kindness and bravery, though he would never again be her lover. Smiling to herself at these thoughts, she rested her head against the back of the seat and waited patiently to arrive. The two carriages passed through the gates of Vaughan Palace, and rolled up to the steps of the grand entrance. King Edmund and Princess Emma waited anxiously with Caroline’s parents, the Duke and Duchess. As soon as the carriages stopped, the families descended upon them. “My God,” cried Elise, “I thought I would die from the worry. Caroline, are you all right? Sophie…Why is she laying down?” The Princess and King were making similar exclamations about Sloane, but Caroline was so exhausted and relieved to finally be safe that she fainted dead away. She would have fallen to the ground in a painful heap if Lord Gifford, who had stepped over to assist in moving Sophie, hadn’t caught her. Elise nearly went into hysterics, and the whole party was excited and upset. Luke took Caroline from Lord Gifford and carried her all the way through the opulent home to the wing where her chambers lie. Once there, he laid her carefully on the bed, covered her with the blanket, and left the room, softly closing the door behind him.
Chapter Thirteen Caroline stirred in bed and began waking up around midday. Her stomach was growling so loudly that she couldn’t sleep any longer, even if she wanted to. As she rubbed her eyes, she realized that they hadn’t been given anything to eat the entire time at the Scarclyfs. It was no wonder it felt as though a beast was living in her belly. She pushed the covers down and realized she was still dressed only in Luke’s tunic. Rolling her eyes at the mess she must be, she began climbing out of bed. Emily entered the room just as Caroline’s feet touched the floor. “My lady?” She then exclaimed, “You’re awake! The Duke and Duchess will be ever so relieved to hear. And Lady Sophie, of course.” “Sophie is conscious?” asked Caroline, pulling the dirty tunic over her head and tossing it to the floor. “Can you warm me some water, Emily?” “Yes, my lady, she is awake, thank the Lord. And yes…one moment. Oh, I am so glad you are all right.” Emily hurried away before Caroline could inquire about Sloane, trying to stealthily wipe her tears away as she did. She smiled, she could not ask for a more loyal and dear handmaiden. She pulled out a simple light blue gown, far more plain than a future princess would be expected to wear, but Caroline was still weary and weak and did not care about etiquette at that moment. After carefully pulling it over her aching head, Caroline slipped her feet into her slippers and waited for Emily’s return. Once she had the water, she splashed it over her face and neck, and then behind her ears. Finally, she asked Emily to fashion her hair into a simple braid. She felt much more refreshed and ready to face whatever news was waiting for her. Emily directed Caroline down the corridor and to the chambers that had been assigned to Sophie. Her sister was lying across the room’s chaise with her eyes closed. “Sophie?” Sitting up quickly, as though Caroline’s voice had startled her, she smiled when she saw her. It was a strange sight to see the new fangs in Sophie’s mouth, and caused Caroline to hesitate for a split second. Then, she ran straight to her and the sisters hugged as though they hadn’t seen each other in years.
Chapter Fourteen Sloane was half asleep when he heard the knock at his chamber door. “Come in.” he called, carefully easing himself up to sit against the headboard. In walked Caroline, looking ravishing and fresh, with her hair pulled back from her face. Quite the change from the slivers he remembered of seeing her at the Scarclyf castle, dirty, wearing a man’s tunic, and appearing half-starved. The memories of what happened there would haunt Sloane forever. Did he make the right decisions? Was he only bringing more trouble by killing Alexandre? Sloane didn’t know if he could lead soldiers to battle, let alone war. Did he have it in him to make the choices that would affect Bernehart and its allies? Sophie would have been dead if it weren’t for Lord Chase choosing to Change her. And Caroline. Lord Gifford had told him, during his conscious moments on the journey home, that she had been found running for her life, completely naked. Sloane knew Mathias hadn’t breached her maidenhood, but he was loathe to think of her being violated in any fashion, no matter how minor. Caroline lowered her head and dipped into a shy curtsy. “Hello, Sloane. You’re looking well.” “Let’s drop the formalities, Caroline.” he said, opening his arms, “Do come over.” And she did, without hesitation, and Sloane scooped her into his lap. Running his hands through her thick, beautiful hair, he pulled her head close to his. “I give you my word that Mathias Scarclyf will answer for his treatment of you and your sister,” he whispered into her ear. Caroline turned her head so they were nose to nose, eye to eye. Her green eyes sparkled like emeralds and she didn’t speak. Sloane feared he had offended her ladylike sensibilities, but then she nodded. Just once, but firmly, and he sensed she was thinking of her sister. “And how is the Lady Sophie?” he asked, taking her small hand in his. Swallowing, Caroline replied, “She’s healed, for the most part. Now it’s just her accepting the fact that she’s been Changed. There
are so few Others in Scollfyld. I believe she fears she will not be able to marry. Sophie does so want to be a bride.” “Is that all?” Sloane asked. “Why, Caroline, Sophie is always welcome here in Bernehart. There are almost as many Others here as there are mortals. She need not fear she is unwanted.” He gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. “It’s settled,” Sloane said, “Sophie will live here in Bernehart, yes?” Caroline smiled widely. “I’m sure she will agree. We’ve never really been apart. Though, I’m certain my father won’t like it.” “Now, now. He simply won’t have a say. After all, it will be on the order of the King of Bernehart. I’m sure Father will be more than happy to have her here. He feels Emma needs more women around her, anyway. She’s so cold-mannered. I suppose coming of age without a mother is harder on girls.” His voice took on a hard edge when he mentioned their absent mother. He knew that eventually he would have to tell Caroline the story, but decided to save it for another time. Curling up into a ball, with her head resting on his chest, Caroline asked “Sloane?” “Yes?” he replied, enjoying the feel of her casual touch. “I believe I am beginning to love you.” Stifling a laugh at her serious tone, Sloane nodded seriously and said, “Well, I should hope so, as I am beginning to love you. It’d be a terrible shame if I loved you, and you not me.” Caroline gave him a playful slap on his arm, but kept her head on him. “You are not being a gentleman. Poking fun at a woman’s love.” Sloane did switch to seriousness then. “No, my Darling.” He said, “No poking fun. You are my bride. We were destined to be together. And I love you.” With that, he tilted her face up towards his and proved it with his kiss.
Chapter Fifteen Caroline was beside Sloane, and they stood together as a couple in front of the Cleric. She carried a bundle of red roses in her hands. The great hall was packed with royalty and noble men and women from Bernehart and Scollfyld, as well as neighboring allies. Keeping her back straight and her neck high and proper, Caroline peeked at Sloane from the corner of her eye. He looked so handsome in his finest clothes, and you couldn’t tell at all that just days before he looked like a prisoner of war. That was the magic of being an Other, she supposed. The Cleric pronounced them married, and Sloane turned to face her. He slipped a heavy emerald green onto her finger. With a heart full of hope, she titled her head up and watched him through the veil of lace. He lifted it, put both hands behind her head and leaned down. The kiss was far more intimate and longer than what was normally proper, but Caroline knew the guests would overlook that in light of recent events. Finally, they parted and turned to the audience to walk down the aisle and towards the dining room for the feast. Well wishes and huzzahs rained down on them from all sides, and her cheeks started to hurt from smiling so hard. The servants of Bernehart had outdone themselves with the wedding feast. The table stretched from one end of the large room to the other, and it was laden with delicacies and treats of every kind imaginable. Roast turtle dove, venison, oysters, and candied apples, oranges, and pastries as far as the eye could see. All of this, when the Royal family, aside from Caroline, wouldn’t eat a bite. After they had sat at one end of the table, Caroline noticed several silver pitchers. “Is that wine?” she asked a servant who was spooning gravy over a platter of quail. “No, your Highness, it is blood. Sheep, boar, venison, and bear, I believe. Would your Highness care for some?” Caroline shook her head fervently, “Oh, no. No thank you.” She knew she would eventually have to drink blood, once Changed, but she couldn’t stomach the idea while still being mortal. However, she did notice Sophie sipping a goblet of a thick, red liquid. How odd that her sister was Changed and she was not. Aside from their eyes, it was their first physical difference. It made Caroline a little sad, but she shook the thought. Sophie sat beside Lord Chase, and Caroline noticed the Other doting on her sister. He even filled her glass before the servants had a chance to notice.
Apparently, even Sloane took note. He leaned towards Caroline and whispered with some mischief in his voice, “I think your sister will do just fine here in Bernehart.” “When did Lord Chase take such an interest in Sophie?” she whispered back. Sloane smiled knowingly. “For an Other who doesn’t normally drink human blood, willingly Changing someone creates a strong bond. Of course, I haven’t experienced this first hand. Yet.”
Chapter Sixteen The room was lit by a few scattered candles, and Sloane was reminded of his first Intimate and only visit with Caroline. Then, she had looked so terrified to be alone with him. Now, judging from the way she lay reclined on the bed, she couldn’t wait to have him with her. Her nightgown was much more elaborate than the simple one she had on that night. This one was lacy and ribbon-trimmed, with a shockingly low neckline. And it looked as thin as a flower petal. Sloane wondered if it would fall apart at his touch. Caroline’s hair was loose and wild, flowing in dark brown waves to the middle of her back. “My darling, my bride,” he whispered as he slipped into bed beside her. Caroline turned toward him, eyes glowing with the passion of a girl who had been waiting her whole life for this single moment. “My husband, my Lord.” she said quietly back, reaching a hand up to stroke his face. Sloane leaned over her and their lips met. Their kisses were soft at first, nearly yearning. And then, as though they couldn’t wait any longer, their tongues plunged together, massaging and stroking each other. “Are you ready?” asked Sloane, reveling in the sweet taste of her lips. Caroline nodded, and Sloane moved his mouth from her lips to her neck. He nibbled on her delicate skin, then let his fangs drop to their full length and stroked them against her. Then, he languidly let them sink into her skin, centimeter by centimeter, until they were plunged fully into her neck. Caroline gasped softly, but caressed the back of his head reassuringly. He had heard tale that the experience was slightly painful, but in the right setting, it could be full of bliss as well. Sloane felt positively thrilled: it was so rare that he even tasted human blood, and never fresh from a warm body. It was going to be a night of new experiences for the both of them. Suckling smoothly, he closed his eyes, letting their bodies share of each other.
Chapter Seventeen It was done, she was changed. Caroline knew it, could feel it in her very bones. She was an Other now. Her senses were heightened, and she felt she could hear the last drops of blood draining out of her body and into Sloane’s eager mouth. He must have sensed this too, and he pulled slightly away from her. “Are you all right, my darling?” he asked, staring deeply into her eyes. Caroline was more than all right. She had never felt anything remotely like this in her life. It was exhilarating. She felt as though she and Sloane were one person, one connected soul. Her body tingled. Though she no longer had a heartbeat, she felt more alive than she ever had. Licking her new fangs in expectation, Caroline smiled. “Yes, my Lord.” she replied in a hushed, reverent tone. Sloane was now her love and her life. She had given herself willingly to him, and now was the time for her to give to him what she had been saving for twenty-one years. “I’m ready for you.” Sloane groaned at the words, as though he was holding in a pent-up breath for that exact phrase. Caroline sat up to take her gown off, and then lay back again, letting Sloane drink of her pale flesh in the candlelight. After slipping off his pants, he lowered himself to the bed once more and shifted his body towards hers. Caroline could feel his hard cock brush against her thighs as he positioned himself beside her. Without a word, he skated his hand from her knees up to her hip, then down to the slickness of where her legs met. Sloane dipped one finger into her wetness, as if to test her desire. Raising her hips, Caroline caused his finger to slip in further and she felt it meet resistance, and knew he must have too. He raised his head and sucked her lower lip into his mouth, letting his fangs play gently along it. Pulling back, he said, “Caroline, you’re so pure. So tight. I can’t believe you’re mine.” “I am yours,” she whispered back. “So take me.” As though he couldn’t wait any longer once he heard those words, he moved his body onto hers, lining up their pelvises. She loved the pressure his weight put on her, even as he supported his upper body with his arms. Invitingly, Caroline opened her legs beneath him as far as they would go and he pressed himself against
her. The tip of his thick cock was right at the opening of her pussy, and her body trembled when she realized that this was it. This was the moment in which she’d give herself to the man she was destined to be with. This thing she had never shared with another soul would be theirs alone. So arousing were her thoughts that she could feel her cunny dripping with anticipation. Pushing lightly, his cock slid a little bit further inside of her. Then, helped by her juices, a little farther more until he was pressing against her maidenhood. After giving her a sweet, soft kiss, Sloane thrust his hips and full sheathed his cock in her cunny. He began moving in and out of her with slow, deliberate movements. Caroline exhaled the breath she had been holding in. Every stroke of Sloane’s cock caressed her insides. “Does it hurt, darling?” he asked quietly, searching her face for signs of pain. Nodding slightly, Caroline replied, “Yes, but it’s a good hurt.” Laughing, Sloane kissed her forehead and said, “Well then. You, my dear, are going to be so much fun.” He quickened his pace and with each stroke, Caroline’s pain lessened and her pleasure grew. She could feel every inch of him as he moved within her, and her enjoyment began to blossom. Sloane let his body fully rest of hers and slid his hands over her breasts to tweak her hard nipples. The muscles of her pussy began tightening around his manhood, and Caroline felt her climax coming. “Sloane,” she breathed out, digging her nails into his back as her senses began to leave her. “I’m going to cum.” Hearing those words caused Sloane to quicken his pace, and to press his cock harder and faster into her body. The orgasm hit Caroline and she pressed her body into the bed in time to her quaking. The ministrations must have felt intense for Sloane, as he came just seconds after she did. Caroline could feel his seed spraying into her insides, officially marking her as his. Not moving except to breathe, Sloane kept on hers and his cock in her cunny. It felt wonderful to lie there with him, not speaking, just enjoying each other’s bodies. Eventually, he rolled off of her and took her in his arms. Then, slowly, Caroline and Sloane drifted off to sleep.
Chapter Eighteen Caroline roused from sleep just after dawn. Lying on her side, facing the curtained window, Sloane’s body pressed against hers with his arms holding her. He stirred when she did. “Good morning, my darling,” he said into her ear as he stroked the hair from her face. “Good morning.” Caroline whispered her reply, rolling onto her back and stretching her arms above her head. “Today is the first day of your new life. Any idea of what you’d like to do?” he asked, kissing along her shoulder. Caroline had more of an idea what she didn’t want to do. She didn’t want to get up and face the day. She didn’t want to worry about what the Scarclyf clan was up to, or when the men who were sent to follow them would return. She didn’t want to argue with her parents about Sophie remaining in Bernehart. Or worry about manners and etiquette and looking the part of the new princess. So, basically, all she wanted to do was stay in bed with Sloane and pretend they were the only two people to exist in the entire world. Burrowing under the duvet, Caroline peeped her head out at Sloane and said, “I’m already doing what I want to do today.”
Chapter Nineteen The halls of Beaumont Manor rang with the desperate screams of the evening meal. Mathias, for once having no appetite, paced the floor of the library. He was caught up in his thoughts of vengeance. Not only had he failed in the destruction of the Chosen, but his only brother was now dead. They had been best friends for over one hundred years, and now he was gone. It wasn’t even safe to return to his own castle. Mathias was eternally grateful for the centuries-old alliance between the Scarclyfs and the Beaumonts. A knock came at the door and Rebecca Beaumont entered, looking as beautiful as ever. Her platinum blonde hair shone orange in the candlelight, and her blood-red eyes regarded him with sympathy. “Do not tell me you’re still fuming, Mathias, when you know full well that the Vaughans and their allies will pay dearly, twice over what they owe us in blood. We will make sure of it.” Mathias opened his arms and Rebecca came to him, pressing her soft, cool breasts against his own hard, cold chest. He fingered her curls, then tugged gently at them. It was a pity their marriage would have to be postponed with this new battle coming. Perhaps he could comfort himself with her body. It had been so long since they had made each other scream. He had never understood how such as ethereal looking being such as Rebecca could be so, so fiendish. She interrupted his thoughts by saying, “Father wants you to come down and drink before my brothers drain every last peasant.” “I will,” said Mathias grimly, his mind now fully back on the task at hand. “I will need all my strength for the planning of what is to come.” The End
