Seal the Deal Sector Guard Book 24 By Viola Grace
To Tina, Janet and Jay who brought the Sector Guard into the light of day when Devine Destinies was starting out. To the readers who have kept this as fun to write as a series could be. Love you all from the bottom of my heart.
Chapter One he Centre of the Open Mind was humming with activity. Theo Nywyn was holding court with her friends and family and Sekhara had brought the holiday present that was her ticket to the party. “Hara! You made it!” Theo’s Terran enthusiasm made Sekhara smile like it always did. “Nothing could stop me from attending your annual festivities, Theo. Good evening, Altius.” She inclined her head to the Wyoran Representative to the Alliance. Altius Nywyn had his arm around his wife and was busy greeting the flood of visitors to the Centre. “Good evening, Sekhara Norr. I trust all is well at the Wheel?” She smiled sadly. “As well as it ever is. There are always links being taken advantage of and mediation for reparation to be conducted.” Here with friends and family, Sekhara was able to keep her shields firmly in place, but in the course of her duties, she had to open her mind and

Viola Grace investigate the allegations levied by the links toward their clients and in some cases, the other way around. She put her gift on the table and went in search of some punch. The moment that she sat down, Ledara snugged up against her hip, her red skin the image of her father’s. It contrasted sharply with the navy blue colouration that Sekhara had been born with, but those were Altius’s genetics in action. Ledara smiled up at her softly. “The party is fun. Mommy was worried that no one would come.” “She worries about that every year.” “Yes, but this year I can feel it.” Oh, dear. It was early but not unheard of for a child of two Wyorans to develop early empathy. Ledara was going to be the first in her age group. A hefty burden for a child of five. “You will be fine. Ask your dad to send you to the Education Centre during the summer or have your uncle Sahvahn give you instruction. You can develop shields and all kinds of ways to keep your thoughts in and other folks out.” “Is that what you do?” Sekhara smiled and gave the little girl a squeeze. “No, I have what is called a warped talent.” Ledara frowned. “Does it hurt? Do you need a link?” 2
Seal the Deal She chuckled. “No, sweet. I am simply not an empath anymore. My mind is much more direct now. I see words and the emotions that form them.” “Oh. Because if you needed a link, I could do that when I am older.” Sekhara gave her another squeeze. “You have a good heart, but save your talents for when you get older. For now, learn how to use and control them. The stronger you get, the better you will be able to help folks if you still want to when you are older.” Whatever the child would have said next was lost as the gift exchange began. Sekhara laughed with her friends as they were handed numbered beads and picked up the corresponding gift. She held the carved wood box that her hostess had handed her and noticed the deliberate attention that Altius was giving her. He looked nervous as she reached to open the box. The temptation, as it always was, was to reach within his mind and find her answer. That was not something that one did to friends, so she unlatched the box and lifted the lid. The collar was embroidered with delicate silk thread. Bands of detailed patterns worked their way across the fabric and she lifted the gift out of the box with a heavy sigh. Her friends stopped laughing and watched her lift the heavy Sector Guard uniform from the box. 3
Viola Grace The base was a one-piece suit with attached boots, but that was where the word uniform stopped applying. A silk over-robe was fastened at the shoulders and as Sekhara stood and put the clothing against her, she could see that it was a perfect fit. She gave Altius a wry look as he dodged eye contact. “I am guessing that this will make my decision for me. Where is he, Altius?” A shadow parted from the wall and Contract made himself known. Elaborate marks on his uniform made his the masculine version of the one in her hands. His deep green skin and burgundy hair were only shown at head and hands. The sapphire eyes with slit pupils were fixed on her with intensity. “Sekhara, pardon me for inserting myself into your festivities.” His smooth tone caused several of her friends to smile and giggle nervously. It was seduction with sound. “They are not my festivities. They are those of our host and hostess. You owe your apology to them. Me, you owe a gift.” She held up the uniform. “This is a job offer.” He grinned, his canines flashing sharply in the cheerful light reflected from the tree. “You are correct. Are you willing to accept it?” “I might. We need to discuss terms. Altius, Theo, will you excuse us?” She gathered the box 4
Seal the Deal and placed the uniform back inside. Tucking it under her arm, she jerked her head for Contract to follow her deeper into the home of the Nywyn’s. Theo’s office was empty and Sekhara led him in to the room, closing the door behind them. It was a rather intimate gesture, but she didn’t want an interruption from his fan base. She took one of the comfortable chairs in front of the fire and gestured for him to take the other. “Now. Explain to me why you are here, what is your talent and why you think you have a shot at getting into my pants.” “That is very direct.” He settled his seven feet of lithe muscle into the chair and quirked a brow at her. “I can reach into your mind and pull out the answers. This is quite politic for me.” She placed her elbows on the arms of the chair and tented her fingers, tapping the deep blue digits slowly. He fidgeted in his seat and she kept him in her implacable gaze. “Well?” She raised an eyebrow. “The Sector Guard can offer you adventure.” She smirked. “Not interested.” “Travel.” “I can travel as much as I wish to.” He dragged in a deep breath. “You will have the opportunity to help folk in dire situations and under incredible stresses. Guardsmen need a 5
Viola Grace counsellor more than anyone can know. We face death, violence, the most heinous situations as well as the burden of arriving too late.” She leaned back and put her arms on the chair, her party gown flowing around her in soft gold folds that matched her eyes. “You have caught my interest. Go on. What can I do for the Guard?” “Well, let me state first that I am a Contract specialist. Every legal precedent in the Alliance and Nyal space is within my mind and I can create an airtight agreement that even light cannot escape from.” Sekhara tilted her head at the Wyoran with the hypnotic voice. “I see. Now, why me and not one of the plethora of other telepaths out there? And, do you really intend to legally trap me?” “You have an ability to make contact with anyone based on their cranial scans, at immeasurable distances.” His blue eyes seemed to grow larger and she could feel the push of his talent against her. She quirked her lips, “That is classified information.” “And as a member of the Sector Guard, you will be in a position to use your talents to the fullest extent, every day. They need you. We need you.” His tone rang with determination and sincerity. “What about our personal interaction? Even Altius and Effin have told me that there is an 6
Seal the Deal expectation of bonding between partners. Physical bonding. Where do we stand on that?” She put an expectant look on her face and waited. Contract swallowed and looked sheepish. “It would be nice to have a Wyoran woman with me and I promise to be a sensitive and careful lover and to do my best as a partner. I will back you up when needed and stand aside when you don’t.” “That seems awfully passive for a man with your reputation, Contract. Criton Ethyn was quite the ladies’ man around the hub before he left for his new career in the stars. I have heard tales of debauchery, bondage and any number of group activities of a sexual nature. It is amazing how a man can change when he realizes his choices of life partner are limited.” His mouth opened and closed, the cords of his neck flexed as he struggled to breathe. “How do you know all that?” She quirked her lips. “Effin Nywyn, husband of Relay, is the cousin of Altius, our host, tonight, who is the brother of my employer, Sahvahn Nywyn. They did the research long before they let you find me tonight.” The door to the study flew open and a creature bounded in, wriggling with delight as it sat next to Sekhara’s chair. “Hello, Maxi. How are you today?” Criton was looking at the beast warily. “You 7
Viola Grace have a nylander?” “Ledara gave me one of the kits when Maxi was born. Six months later and she is ready to leave her mother. Is there room on your shuttle for her?” Sekhara reached out and stroked the snow-white fur on her new pet. The mental link between them snapped into being and strengthened as the Wyoran let her mind touch the beast’s. A centre of calm rippled into her from Maxi. “Room on my shuttle? You agree?” “Let’s return to the party and have a nice time. You can meet me at my office tomorrow and we will discuss the finer points of the contract.” He cautioned her. “You will have to apply to let the nylander leave Wyora.” She grinned as she stood and walked to the door with Maxi at her side. “I already have.”

Chapter Two ekhara was busy feeding her bonded pet snacks from the buffet when Theo sidled up to her. “I see she found you.” Sekhara laughed and stroked her new companion’s head. “She could find me in the dark, upside down.” “Yes, they are good for that. The other three kits still haven’t linked to anyone. It is surprising that Maxi chose you so quickly.” “Well, I did catch her when she came out. I still can’t believe that Tiki made it all the way to my home to have her kits.” Stroking the silky fur, she smiled up at her hostess. “The ambush was successful by the way. I have agreed to go with Contract.” Theo let a gust of air out of her lungs, stirring strands of her ebony hair into a lazy motion. “I wasn’t sure that we should assist him on this, but if you are glad, we are glad.” “I don’t think that glad really comes into it. I need a change from links who have been taken
S

Viola Grace advantage of or who have refused to do their duty. I never feel that I am helping anyone and if the Sector Guard offers me that opportunity, I will take it.” “Is it that bad?” Theo touched her shoulder in a comforting reflex. The contact connected them for a moment and with Theo’s open mind, the endless wave of depressing situations was apparent. Sekhara snapped her shields tightly around her thoughts as quickly as she could, but Theo staggered back, breaking contact. “Aw, Hara. That is awful. I am going to let Effin know that I have withdrawn my objections.” This time, Theo locked her personal shields into place before she reached out to hug. “Sorry for the blast. I wasn’t expecting the contact.” Sekhara returned the hug, smiling as Maxi reached in to participate in the embrace. The wet nose preceded the lick on her cheek and she thanked her forethought at getting the inoculations that would defend her against her pet. “I, of all people, should know better. Altius just about dropped Ledara when he felt the shock through me. He has more fortitude for dealing with an untethered mind than any male I have yet met.” The chuckle turned into a smile as Theo backed away. “This talk of work is too weighty for your 10
Seal the Deal celebration. Come on. Let me enjoy my new pet and the company of friends today. Tomorrow will take care of itself.” She got to her feet and looked around. “When does the singing start?” “They are called carols and they start now.” Theo crossed the room and stood next to her husband and family. Musicians started to play and the songs of Theo’s home world came to them through the Wyoran hands on the instruments. Whatever the Christmas holiday was back on Terra, it had certainly found its way into their community and anchored around this family in particular. As Sekhara sat on one of the low couches with Maxi at her side, she felt Criton behind her. They remained together as the music swelled and ebbed, but when Sekhara turned to look at him, the Guardsman with the voice of silk was gone. Settling in to enjoy the feeling of Maxi who was not simply a warm presence at her side, but a calming one in her mind, Sekhara enjoyed what looked to be her last night at home. **** “Relay, I believe that Sekhara Norr is going to join us. You can tell Effin to stop harassing Altius and you can leave Theodora alone.” Criton sat with his feet up on the desk in Altius’s private study. The 11
Viola Grace party went on without him and he smiled at the relief in Relay’s face. “Excellent. She has been dodging us for years. What convinced her?” “The opportunity to work with folks who need her, who need her talent to help them heal. The Wyorans have needed her, but it is as a means to litigation. I believe she is tired of that and wants to engage her talent in a more active manner.” Relay grinned. “Did your voice seduce her?” He grimaced. “No. You were right about that.” The screen he was looking at split and another Terran face was grinning at him. “Her mental shields are too strong. Your voice reinforces the mental suggestion of seduction. If you can’t reach her mind, you can’t use your voice to seduce her. It’s going to require some hard work on your part.” “Thank you, Haunt. It is nice to see you, too.” He grimaced at his base commander. “Will you bring her back to Station 13 immediately?” He sat up and leaned forward. “Why?” “We need Counsel. The sooner she can start, the better.” “Ah and on that matter, Counsel is coming with her pet nylander. It was given to her this evening and she is unwilling to part with it.” Relay looked curious, but it was Haunt who 12
Seal the Deal asked. “What is a nylander?” Criton ran his hands through his hair. “It is an adorable, fluffy, venomous four-legged animal with huge blue eyes that is also empathically sensitive. It’s a bonding animal for those who can attract one. They are fussy creatures and only bond to those that they choose.” Haunt was nodding and then she sat up. “Did you say venomous?” “Yes. We might want to stock the anti-venin as well as inoculating the staff at the base. Hell, you might want to do the whole Sector Guard if she is going to be visiting bases.” Criton enjoyed the look of anxiety on his commander’s face before he eased the last statement. “I am exaggerating. The animal is venomous, but they don’t bite randomly. Usually only in defence of their bond mate. Your Counsel will be well taken care of even if I am not there to do it.” “Are you planning to go somewhere?” Haunt raised her brows. If his complexion had supported it, he would have blushed. “No, of course not. But not everyone can fade through floors to check on their mate. If we are sent on assignments, she can do her work from wherever we are and I may have to be in chambers on a negotiation. This will assure me that if her mind is elsewhere, her body is guarded.” They made their sign-off pleasantries and he 13
Viola Grace sighed in relief as the Terran women faded from view. A baritone voice spoke from behind him, “I suppose it is a good thing that Ledara’s pet ran away and ended up whelping in Sekhara’s home. How did you arrange that, Criton?” He removed his feet from his host’s desk and turned in the chair. “A little whisper in the expectant mama’s ear and off she went.” “So, that is why you came for a visit six months ago. I did wonder why you didn’t stalk her then.” Altius poured two glasses of liquor and handed one to Criton. The potent scent of the rare brandy was welcome. “You won’t tell her, will you? The job she is in for will not be easy and she needs whatever comfort she can obtain from the nylander.” “Maxi, her name is Maxi. It is short for Maximus Extremus. A good name for the runt of the litter.” Altius took a seat on the couch and relaxed. “How is family life treating you?” Criton sipped at the brandy and enjoyed the burn. He had known Altius and Sehvahn most of his life and came to visit every chance he got. His own family was on the other side of Wyora and got his first visitation, but his second stop was always the Nywyns. “Theo is trying to curtail having another child, 14
Seal the Deal so I am busy trying to persuade her most nights.” He grinned, his burgundy skin giving his white teeth a startling contrast. “Sounds like hard work. How is Sekhara taking her new occupation? The bonding with her pet is happening quickly, so I am sure they are out there on a couch snuggling together.” He tried to keep the jealousy out of his tone but was sure he failed. “You are the one who wanted her to have Tiki’s kit. I understand why given the expanse of her talent. Since your talents prohibit a normal link, this is an excellent compromise to give her the backup that she needs.” Criton gave his friend a serious look. “How do you do it?” “What?” “Have a woman like Theo depending on you, a family who needs you and you still manage to look sane?” The deep laughter boomed through the room. “You think Theo depends on me? Her mind was healed years ago, long before Ledara was born. She is my strength, my home. No matter what political mire I wade through, her mind steadies me and makes me stronger. Her arms catch me every night before we sleep and her love burns brightly in her mind. I depend on her and my little ones to keep me sane, not the other way around.” Criton absorbed it and his mind flicked through 15
Viola Grace images of Sekhara’s lithe blue-skinned body under his, her mind twined through his thoughts. He shifted uncomfortably in his chair, angling his body away from his friend as it reacted strongly to the images. A chuckle burst from Altius. “Don’t worry about it, Criton. The first time I met Theo, I had a hard-on for days. You have been after Sekhara for a few years. It is only natural that she figures heavily in your more intimate thoughts.” Criton thought of all the time he had spent with Sekhara’s image on the holo screen in his shuttle. He leaned back and swallowed the last of the brandy, hoping that the burning in his throat would distract the rest of him. “You have no idea, my friend. You have no idea.” Altius leaned forward and clapped him on the shoulder. “Don’t worry, Criton, it only gets worse.”

Chapter Three ekhara woke to the square and steady nudge of a box in her back. A wet nose on her neck followed immediately. “Good morning, Maximus. I see you brought my present to bed with you.” She rolled over to see the bright blue eyes of her new bond animal crinkled with amusement. The intelligence was that of a four-year-old Wyoran and if language could come from those silent throats, they would chatter away constantly. As it was, Sekhara could feel the emotional happiness spilling into her from an outside source covered with fluff. Groaning, she sat up and pulled the box onto her lap. The uniform was just as beautiful today as it was last night. “Fine, one shower and then into the offices.” She got out of bed and with her new friend at her heels, she took a quick shower and then tugged on the Sector Guard uniform. She pulled her loose mediator robes over the bodysuit and then

Viola Grace wandered over to the kitchen for a quick breakfast for her and Maxi. Nylanders were omnivorous which was fortunate. Sharing ration packs with her would be easy. Dressed for a day of listening to the minds of the abused and the indignation of the abusers, she loaded Maxi onto her skimmer and flew to the hub and her small offices. A few curious glances at the nylander made her smile brightly. The bond animals were allowed in the offices by the very nature of their link to their Wyorans. The presence of the Guardsman in front of her office door was getting quite a few female admirers. “Good morning, Contract. You are early.” “I did not want to chance missing you.” There was a wealth of emotion in his tone and she used her palm to open the biometric lock as yet another woman slowly walked past with her hips swinging in an effort to gain his attention. “It seems you had plenty of women to keep you company. Quite a lot for this time in the morning. Someone must have sent out a memo.” She grunted as he pushed the door open for her and Maxi slid past them both and into the confines of the office. “I only have eyes for you, Sekhara. Now, let’s 18
Seal the Deal get to this contract. Your presence is urgently needed on Station 13.” He held up the data pad and ushered her into her office, closing the door behind them. She sat behind her desk and ordered some snacks for Maxi through the tube system that fed small purchases and food to the offices of the Wheel. “Where would you like to start?” He sat in the client chair and leaned back, placing his heels on her desk. “Let’s start with the risks of the job and the danger bonuses offered.” Sekhara looked into his deep blue eyes and kept her focus through an effort of will. This was going to be a long negotiation session and she flicked the do-not-disturb light on the outside of her office door, no sense being interrupted. “Contract, you may proceed.” She wandered around as he went over the details of pay rates—standard, exceptional and danger. She prepared a pot of tea while he spoke and she asked minor questions. “What is the contingency if I am wounded beyond continuing my duties?” “There is a bulk payment offered as well as an administrative position in any one of the Guard bases, but that won’t come into play. I have a personal interest in keeping you in one piece.” His gaze was intense and fixated on her backside. She cleared her throat and slid a cup of tea in 19
Viola Grace front of him. “Now, as to that. What are the provisions for my living quarters and the relationship with you?” Sekhara got the feeling that if he could have blushed, he would have. There was a certain set to his brows and a twist around his mouth that she would watch for in the future. “Well, there are no set time limits or any of that sort of thing, but we have adjoining quarters and a single bunk on the shuttle.” He rubbed at the back of his neck, but it didn’t stop her from noticing the hitch in his breathing and the subtle change in his posture. She grinned and leaned on the edge of her desk. “How thoughtful, we can sleep in shifts.” It was fun watching him back pedal. “That is not what I intended to say. I meant that you would have time to make your decision.” He cleared his throat and shifted slightly in his chair. She set her cup of tea down on the table and straightened. “Stand up.” He frowned. “Why? We are hardly done negotiating.” She took his teacup from him and put her hands on his shoulders. “Fine, we will do it your way.” Taking her courage into her hands, she leaned forward and kissed him. A sharp tingling shot from her lips and arrowed straight through her breasts before going lower. She felt hands on her 20
Seal the Deal waist and she was jerked off her feet and onto Contract. When his tongue came forward to fence with hers, she enjoyed it for a moment before leaning back. Slowly, she licked her lips. “Yes, I think one bunk will be fine.” The slow shuddering of his body as he fought for control made her smile again. As calmly as she could, she left his lap and retrieved her tea before crossing to the other side of her desk and resuming her seat. “Now, do I get holidays?” She arched her brows and watched him gather his wits. Partnering with the greatest legal mind of her time and knowing that she could scatter that mind to the wind was a power trip that was worthy of a deduction in her pay. One should rarely get paid for that kind of enjoyment. He returned his focus to the data pad and his rich hypnotic voice flowed over her. “You are considered on duty for sixty straight Alliance weeks…” She sat back and sipped at her tea as he laid out the details of her time allotments. A devilish smile played around her dark blue lips and she closed her eyes to listen. **** The kiss had shaken his control. The urge to grab 21
Viola Grace her up and seduce her on the desk was hard to resist, but there would be time for that later. As he read the contract points, he watched her nod and her lips purse. Her hair was up today in a no-nonsense bun and he missed the rippling waves that softened her features. She asked him a few short questions and smiled as she listened to him outline the responsibilities and protections expected of and given to the Guardsmen. He was about to go into the uniform details, but she raised her hand. “Enough. I am in. Where do I sign?” Surprised, he held out the data pad with the scanning unit and she pressed her fingers individually onto the pad before raising it to her face for an ocular scan. “Fine. When do we go?” She leaned down and stroked her nylander’s head. “Do you want to go on a trip, Maxi?” The crooning tone she took on had a peculiar effect on his senses. Criton stood and offered his hand to his new partner. “My shuttle is waiting on the pad. Do you have your uniform?” “I do. I will send for the rest of my things later. I packed last night.” She grinned at him and his heart flipped in his chest, to say nothing of the effect on his groin. Their first few days were going to be hell and 22
Seal the Deal Criton couldn’t wait. **** Grim determination was not what Sekhara had been expecting, but the gleam in Contract’s eyes gave her a small thrill of anticipation. “Come along, Maxi.” She reached out to the tube, snagged the treats and tucked her gift under her arm. She arched a brow. “Shall we?” He offered her his arm and she took it, sliding her palm along the surface of his suit before settling on his forearm. It felt right and very appropriate to walk out of her office with Maxi on one side and Contract on the other. He locked her office door and they headed through the hub toward the shuttle bay. Several women eyed their grouping speculatively and Sekhara felt waves of envy from quite a few of the males. The envy surprised her, so she tightened her personal shields. Maxi moved closer and the psychic bleed-through stopped. The large Sector Guard shuttle was waiting in a launch position and Sekhara knew for a fact that they didn’t allow overnight parking there. “So, you knew I would say yes?” He looked down at her and smiled a very intimate smile. “Eventually, yes. Now, let me 23
Viola Grace introduce you to the Chenikil. She’s the finest dignitary ship that the Guard has to offer and now your home away from home.” Maxi ran up to the ship, sniffed around the steps and then peed on the landing gear before running inside the open door. Sheepish, Sekhara grinned, “At least she likes it.” Contract eyed the puddle under the gear and scowled. “You have no idea how happy I am that she does.” “I mean—” He pressed his palm over her mouth. “Counsel, get in the shuttle.” Snickering, she followed her new pet into their new home. It was time to start the adventure.

Chapter Four axi was settled in a surprisingly comfortable spot under the bunk, Sekhara moved to lock herself in to the navigator station and Contract was working on the pre-flights. “She’s all settled. Where is our first stop?” He glanced at her and paused when he saw her in her Sector Guard uniform. “When did you have time to change?” “It didn’t take me long.” “I didn’t hear the lav door.” “I didn’t use the lav. Have you ever tried to get dressed in one of those on a ship? Your elbows will never be the same.” She smoothed a hand down the fabric and admired the detail in the designs. Contract looked as if he was strangling on his own tongue. She sighed. “Yes, I was naked right behind you with no closed doors, but you didn’t turn around, so everything was fine. Breathe and deal with it.” Sekhara smiled as he grumbled but sent the notice of take-off to the control tower of the Wheel.

Viola Grace “Clearance granted. Have a good voyage, Contract.” “I will.” He nodded to Sekhara and they slowly ascended through the skies of Wyora. She looked down to see the Trade Wheel of Wyora where all the trading offices and politicians were housed. Her world fell away beneath her and she smiled, knowing that it would not be the last time that she visited her home, but now, it was time for her next phase of life. Sekhara had spoken to her family after the party, explaining that she was finally giving in to the Sector Guard. Her mother had been more concerned with Contract’s bloodlines than she had with the loss of her daughter. Sahvahn had been spoken to at the party. His scowling crimson features were far dearer to her than her own brothers’. “Are you sure about this, Sekhara? The Guard often finds themselves in dangerous situations.” “I am sure, Sahv. It is time. I have been here too long. Folk are becoming too dependent on my skills.” At one point in her life, she had had a crush on the older Nywyn brother, but once she worked for him, she quickly began to understand that they were not to be. The comradeship far outweighed the initial lust. His sigh had been enough to part her hair. “If Criton lets any harm befall you, I will beat him until he is more 26
Seal the Deal black than green.” “Fair enough. Thanks for understanding, Sahvahn.” His laugh caused heads to turn. “I acknowledge your desire, but understanding is not in my grasp.” “Why did Theo come to the Alliance?” “Because she Volunteered…oh.” With that statement, they went over her contact protocols and she swore to send a check-in via Relay whenever possible. With friends and family alerted, there was no reason to stay at home to listen to the weeping and wailing of those who felt ill used. She breathed deeply and let her mind open the moment that they pushed into the troposphere. Contract sat up and looked at her the moment that she removed her shields. “You opened your mind.” “I did. It was time. I like to keep an open mind when not surrounded by a population.” A voice chirped from the com unit. “Excellent. I need you to find someone, Counsel.” Sekhara had heard the voice before, but she gave Contract a wary look as she answered with the flick of her finger. “Relay?” “You know it. Welcome to the Sector Guard. Now, Haunt has authorized me to send you an assignment and you can carry it out while you travel to the nearest jump site.” Relay’s voice was 27
Viola Grace calm and far clearer than it had a right to be. It was one of the perks of being wired into the data streams that invisibly criss-crossed the Alliance. Her thoughts became an audio transmission with the help of digital tech. “Fine. What do you need?” She straightened and nodded to Contract. It was time to earn her keep. “A Terran and her Kalordan co-worker have disappeared. There was a distress call issued, but it was weak and the beacon that was sent out is not offering any idea as to where she was taken. We need you to find her so that the rescue party knows where to go.” “Do you have a recent brain scan? I have to synch myself to her signal to find her. Also, last known coordinates will speed things up dramatically.” “Coming your way. How long before you can go in search of her?” “Based on current trajectory, about half an hour. Is that soon enough?” She shifted in her seat as Contract started to accelerate into space. “It will be fine. Beast and Finder can hold Tridell back that long, I think. Let me know when you have a result of any kind and again, welcome aboard.” The link disconnected and Counsel leaned back, exhaling with a whoosh. 28
Seal the Deal “Are you all right to start immediately?” His low tone ran through her in waves. Without her shielding in place, the hypnotic aspect was quite palpable. “I am. The sooner I jump in the better.” The com chirped and she pulled up the files. “Okay, are we up high enough for me to release the restraints? I have to get some stuff from your med kit for this.” “Why, will doing this injure you?” The concern in his voice was touching. “No. I need a brain wave display. I have to make my pattern match hers to find her with any kind of speed. Otherwise, I am hunting in the dark.” She smiled. “So, can I get up and run around?” They broke free as she asked and the panorama of stars and the small cluster of ships around the space station caught her attention. They flitted in and out, docking and releasing in a peculiar dance. “I have never seen it from this angle before.” “Wait.” He turned their ship around and she saw Wyora under them, spinning slowly as they fell away from it. The Wheel was still visible, the greatest city on their home world. “Did you miss it after you left?” “I did. I still do. My family is my first stop on any visit. The Nywyn’s are my second. It is still my home, even after my time away.” 29
Viola Grace He chuckled and she curled her nails into the arms of her chair at the response that jumped through her at the sound. “You can get the med kit now. Do you need to lie down when you are doing this, or can you remain sitting?” “Sitting is fine. I will be right back.” A few clicks and a twist and she was out of the harness and walking back to the main cabin. Maxi looked up from under the bunk and lashed her tail. “Honey bear, I would gladly have you with me, but you are too big.” She leaned down and stroked her pet’s head. Their minds touched and held, Maxi’s happy enthusiasm overwhelming the slight feeling of loss that Sekhara was experiencing. Under her hand, Maxi wiggled and did something that only one tenth of all nylanders could manage. She shrank back to her birth size and looked up at Sekhara with huge eyes. Laughing in surprise, Sekhara picked up her new pet and cuddled her against her chest, feeling the faster heartbeat and loving the compact warmth. “What a clever girl you are.” Reminding herself that she had come in with a purpose, she got to her feet and retrieved the med kit. Back in the nav seat, she juggled her pet, the kit and the screen that she withdrew from the depths. 30
Seal the Deal Contract sighed. “Put Maxi on the floor, hand me the kit and take what you need. We are on automatic until we get to the jump site.” “You didn’t comment on Maxi’s size.” “I simply figured out that she’s one of the few who can shift size at will. It seems that she would be an exceptional animal given her choice of bond mate.” He held the kit easily while she pulled the scanners from the interior and attached the monitors to her temples and the base of her neck. She inhaled and exhaled as she turned the scanner on. Her familiar thought pattern appeared on the display and she looked over at the file that Relay had sent and started to synch her mind to that of Maud Odette Mikaelson.

Chapter Five ending her mind that far out was no easy task, but she welcomed the sensation of speed that she felt. It was the first time she had done it while in a moving ship, so keeping her orientation became her prime concern. She crossed shipping lanes, com lanes and sought the mind with the pattern that now matched her working image. Sekhara found the trail of Maud’s mind and followed the disgruntled Terran’s sleepy thoughts through a star system until the mind began to shine brightly in the welter of beings on the sparsely populated world. She moved around, skirting the more sensitive inhabitants as she homed in on Maud. She put the equivalent of a mental finger down on the woman and woke herself slightly on the ship. “How long until rescue?” Sekhara kept her gaze on the waves that she was holding her mind to. “Have you found her?” “I have, but I don’t want to contact her without
S
32
Seal the Deal letting her know what is going on.” “Give me the coordinates. They have been standing by and should be able to find them shortly. I will get you a response as soon as I can. Don’t lose her.” “I won’t.” She didn’t mention that Maud was in with groomers for some very intimate treatment. Sekhara watched her target and waited. When Maud was dressed and ready, Contract’s voice finally came to her. “They will be there in under fifteen minutes. You can let her know not to move.” “She doesn’t have a choice. She’s a prisoner, Contract. She goes where they put her.” Sekhara smiled slightly and resumed strengthening her contact with the Terran woman until speech was finally possible. As she worked, Contract continued to feed her details of the imminent rescue and she absorbed them all for her conversation. Sekhara took a deep breath and broadcast to the woman. Don’t move. The surprise in Maud’s mind was evident. Why shouldn’t I move, who are you and where are you? Sekhara felt a little sheepish. She wasn’t used to this. Oh, sorry. I am Counsel of the Sector Guard. I am the longest-range telepath that we have, so all communications of the biological kind come through me. 33
Viola Grace Maud accepted that. Okay, why shouldn’t I move? Because we are about to do an emergency drop through your atmospheric bubble and Fury is going to be fostering a lack of oxygen. We will pick you up where you drop. Are you wearing anything in particular that will make you stand out? I am in silver to my fingernails. Excellent. We will be there in ten minutes. Hold tight. Their ship rocked suddenly and she lost the connection. Pain speared through her mind, but she could only imagine the pain the loss of connection had caused Maud. “What was that?” With one hand to her forehead, she removed the sensors. She blinked rapidly to clear her vision and tried to focus on the view screen. “We hit a debris field. It is weird, because there hasn’t been any activity in the area for days.” Contract swung to grip the controls and on an impulse, Counsel opened her mind again. “Contract, jump, now!” Her voice must have conveyed her urgency, because he engaged the jump engine and jumped blind. Counsel gripped the arms of her chair tightly and gritted her teeth as her body occupied two points in space at the same time. A flare of light struck their shuttle, but they were already on their way. 34
Seal the Deal The console was lit and flashing as they came out of the jump. Contract started cursing violently as he started to shut down the ship’s systems. “The ship is dead. We would have been too if that blast had hit us head on. What was it?” She shook her head and breathed deeply, nausea rising sharply. “I don’t know. I felt malicious darkness and then I yelled. Where are we?” “I have no idea. Our nav systems are dead and the emergency life support is only going to work for a few days.” Contract paused for a moment. “Can you contact anyone?” She rubbed her forehead. “It doesn’t work like that. Working with three-dimensional space is more different than you think.” Maxi jumped up and cuddled on her lap, wriggling and whining. She watched Contract finish shutting down all the relays and tried to come up with a plan of attack. There was an insecurity in her tone when she asked, “Have you been in this situation before?” He grinned at her, trying to reassure her. “Not like this but something similar. First step is to launch a beacon.” She nodded and cuddled Maxi. He seemed to have everything under control and she had a 35
Viola Grace helluva headache. “Can I go lie down for a bit? My head is pounding.” “Of course. I will be right there. We can have lunch and plan our next move.” She smiled and put Maxi down, reaching out to support herself along the wall. Contract was launching the beacon and Sekhara really needed to get off her feet. The bunk was a welcome sight when she made her way into the cabin area. She fell heavily onto the fabric-covered pallet and groaned as the ship stopped spinning around her. “What is wrong?” She felt the edge of the pallet dip and Contract’s hand on her forehead. “I…overextended myself without a proper anchor. My talent is in shock right now.” She smiled through the pain that made bright lights dance across his features. “Link with me.” She jolted. “No.” “Why not, we are partners and you need a stable mind to draw strength and healing from. Use me.” “I have spent my adult life trying to heal the wounds left by those who have used links for their own purposes. I don’t want to be one of them.” She took his hand and held it with her own. He let out a gusty sigh. “You are not using me. I 36
Seal the Deal am offering my mind as your partner to help you recover from an injury incurred in the line of duty. I want to do this. You need help now and we don’t know how long it will be before a rescue can be launched.” Sekhara sighed, shuddering as another waved of disorientation ran through her. That was the crux of the problem, her mind didn’t know which way was up and she had no means to anchor herself when she had gone looking for Maud. Having never done that great a distance before, she had been unprepared for the violence of her reaction. Looking into Contract’s sincere eyes, she nodded and he helped her to sit up, scooping her and putting her in his lap without asking her opinion. The strength and warmth of his body under hers gave her part of the anchor that she needed and her mind steadied by using his as a backdrop. “That’s better already. We may not need to link at all.” Her nausea and pain receded as her mind slowly reoriented itself within her body. It was as if she had scattered her energies to the stars and they were only now finding their way home. “We can and we will. I am in this for the long haul, Counsel. If you need a backup on the psychic plane, I will be there for you.” His voice rumbled through her, calming her hesitant mind. 37
Viola Grace She fought her disgruntled impulses. “Fine. Do you accept my mind as yours?” “I do. Will you take me as your link to increase your stability and power?” “I will.” She leaned into his embrace and sought his thoughts, touching the part of his mind that was able to join hers. A peculiar rush went through her as he surged into her mind while she joined his. He was aroused by the mental contact. She could feel it under her thigh. “Not until we get out of here, Criton.” Calling him by his call sign was silly given their proximity. “I love hearing my name on your lips and in your thoughts.” Before she could move off his lap, his arms were around her and he was pressing a kiss to her lips that explored and tasted before parting them to slip inside. He tasted better than he looked and he looked amazing. She felt a tugging at the back of her skull and then waves of her hair cascaded over his arm. She jerked free of his kiss, her mild confusion and irritation burning in her thoughts. “Why did you drop my hair?” “Because it looks like spun midnight and smells like you.” He ran one hand through the waves and tilted her head back to press a kiss to her throat. “What are you doing?” 38
Seal the Deal He lifted his head and grinned, “Laying the foundation for a seduction. We may be in and out on assignments for the next while and I want to make any headway I can.” Sekhara sat back, her arms pressed against his chest for distance. “You seem really sure that there is a rescue being mounted.” “Of course. It’s a two-way beacon. The moment it launched, we got a signal from Udell base. They are dispatching Stellar Storm to retrieve us. She will be here in a few hours.” She looked at him in surprise and let him know of her displeasure with a blast of emotion to his mind. He winced. “Why didn’t you tell me right away?” “There was no opportunity. You were back here and already in need of care and more information would not have helped you. I am telling you now.” His calm irritated her more than the grip he still had around her waist. She prodded his chest with two fingers. “What else did you find out?” His sheepish grin was echoed in his mind. “We are in the Udell system. It must have been the nearest location to the jump site.” “Do you think what attacked us will follow?” He cocked his head, his bright eyes considering, a calm demeanour considering the heated arousal she was still pressed against. “I think our jump 39
Viola Grace may have confused them. They either thought we got away clean or possibly that we exploded with the impact. I confess to curiosity as to what the hell hit us.” She looked up at him and remembered the mind that she had touched a moment before they were struck. Hate, power and a sick anticipation skimmed across the psychic plane and had given her enough warning to pass the panic on to Criton. Whatever had blasted them was alive and it was not going to stop until it destroyed every Guardsman it came across. She focussed on her partner and let a wave of determination run through their link. “Whatever it was, it won’t catch me by surprise again. I promise.” He didn’t reply but sent her calming thoughts as he lowered his head for a kiss once again. It certainly was a productive way to pass the time, but Maxi’s whine let her know that she was upset at being left out. When Sekhara patted her thighs, a full-sized nylander was on her lap, grunting when Criton’s lips thwarted its tongue, lapping at her cheek. He quickly withdrew when Maxi changed her target and it was soon a triad bound by lust and laughter that was startled by the delicate knocking at the side of the hull. 40
Seal the Deal Sekhara shoved Maxi and got off Criton’s lap. The front screen of the shuttle showed a woman in a sparkling bodysuit peering in through the plexi. Sekhara gave her a thumbs-up and touched her mind. Hello, Stellar Storm. We are fine aside from our dead ship. Are you going our way? Oh, you are Counsel! Nice to meet you. Just hold tight and I will have you to Udell in no time. Criton came up next to her and casually wrapped an arm around her waist. Based on his thoughts, he wasn’t aware of it. Stellar Storm gave her a thumbs-up and in a moment a glittering net of energy surrounded their ship. A few sharp tugs and they were on their way.

Chapter Six eing towed in to Udell base was a little embarrassing, but when they were handed off to an Alliance warship for transport to Station 13, Sekhara had a hard time keeping Maxi under control. Everyone who saw the cheerful fluff ball wanted to pet her and Maxi was a very friendly animal. Shipboard staff stopped and tried to pet Maxi at every hall junction and open door. “Oh, how sweet.” “What’s her name?” “What kind of animal is it?” “Can she do any tricks?” Counsel smiled and walked along, answering what she could and ignoring the questions on tricks. Maxi was enjoying the attention, but she didn’t lag back more than ten feet from her bond mate. Criton had a small carry bag with him, but he kept his arm around her as they walked the halls to an adjacent shuttle bay.
B
42
Seal the Deal She felt the jump of the warship and staggered slightly but righted herself in a moment. “Where did we jump to?” He grinned and nodded politely to the deck crew in the shuttle bay. They walked toward a pod so small that she wasn’t sure that they would all fit. “Where are we going?” She could feel the smug anticipation in his mind. “I will tell you in a moment.” He had a surprise for her and it sang out in his emotions. Maxi ran up to the tiny conveyance and sniffed around, looking up at Counsel dubiously. “I am sure that we will all fit, Maxi. Contract would not cram us into a tiny shell and run away, now would he?” She raised an eyebrow at him in challenge. “Of course not. Now, get in the tiny box and soon you will see my surprise.” He shooed them into the miniscule shuttle and as soon as they were seated in the cramped space, he got clearance and took off. “Where are we going?” “You will see. Just let me clear the warship.” She waited restlessly as the small view screen showed the bulk of the ship they had just walked through. As it passed on its way, the bright jewel in the darkness above a bright blue world caught 43
Viola Grace her eye. “Is that…” Pride entered his mind and his voice. “Station 13. Your new home.” She took in the struts, the compact body of the station as it slowly rotated in the blackness of space. It had the appearance of a slowly moving diamond. She let him feel her amazement through their connection and Maxi whined happily, catching onto the idea that she would soon be able to run around. Her happy feelings ricocheted from one Wyoran to another. Contract was smiling as he brought them into a docking clip and the station grabbed hold of the ship, tugging them inside. When the lights indicated breathable atmosphere, the door opened and Maxi took advantage of the opening. She was frolicking in circles around the tiny vessel as if she knew she was home. Taking Criton’s hand, Sekhara stepped onto the deck of Station 13 for the first time. They were not even to the inner door of the landing bay when a figure ghosted up through the floor. “Haunt. I am pleased to introduce Counsel.” Criton made the introduction swiftly. “Call me Kaylee when you are not on duty, but that isn’t the case now. Come to my offices, we 44
Seal the Deal have an urgent matter to discuss.” She led the way and a bemused couple and their pet followed her. Sekhara sat across from her base commander and tilted her head as a split display lit up and Relay and Tech faced them. Haunt nodded. “Tech, explain your findings.” Tech nodded, smiling grimly. “At first, we tried to figure out what kind of a weapon had made the blast that crippled your ship, but once we examined the residue, it became more and more obvious that the power that struck you was under biological control.” Relay listened and when Tech paused, she spoke. “So, what you are telling us is that there is a talent out there that can blow up spacecraft?” “More than that. Every superficial system was counteracted by an equal force that negated it completely. If you hadn’t jumped, your systems would have been completely overwhelmed and life support would have been taken out with the other systems.” Contract finished, “And we would be dead.” Relay and Tech nodded in agreement. Haunt cleared her throat, “I believe that is what the attacker had in mind.” Counsel swallowed, “That explains the wave of hate that preceded the attack. If the talent hadn’t broadcasted, I wouldn’t have had a chance to warn 45
Viola Grace Contract. He really hates the Sector Guard.” He looked at her and nodded. “And if we hadn’t jumped, we’d be in small chunks right now or large frozen ones.” Haunt gave Counsel a direct look. “Would you know that mind again?” “Of course. One doesn’t forget that kind of hate.” She gestured and Haunt slid a data pad toward her. Counsel was in her element as she created a depiction of the mind that had tried to kill them. “I don’t know what his body looks like, but this is his thought map.” She finished and held up the data pad. “Here he is.” Haunt took the pad and shared the scan. A male with silvery skin and a Dhemon took places in the collection of images of base commanders. Haunt sent the file while speaking, “Might, Guardian, this is the thought map of the attacker. Please share it with all outposts and the Citadel staff.” The men nodded. Guardian spoke. “Will Counsel recognize him and can she track him?” Sekhara blinked. “I suppose I could.” Haunt put up a restraining hand. “Give her a day to acclimate. She also needs to settle and get her baselines done in medical.” The base commanders on the screens nodded. 46
Seal the Deal Might followed up. “As soon as she can make the attempt, we will be standing by.” Contract leaned forward, scowling. “She can’t scan all of space looking for one mind. She needs a more stable environment to engage in a successful and stress-free search.” She blinked. He had been paying attention. “I can manage it on the station.” Haunt held up a hand. “No need. We can get you a seat on Balen, just pick the direction and do what you can. We will take it on a day-by-day basis.” Haunt raised her voice to address the other base commanders. “But, her position as operating Guardsman and Counsellor is her primary duty. If she is called, she will go and put this seek on hold. That said, if anyone finds a clue as to the identity or location of this talent, the sooner we know about it, the sooner she can pinpoint their exact location and make contact with their thoughts.” The other heads nodded and just like that, the screen went dark. Counsel looked to her commanding officer with a brittle but bright smile. “So, has this been the most screwed up first day or what?”

Chapter Seven haring quarters wasn’t as awkward as Sekhara had anticipated. Maxi immediately took up half her bed and Criton excused himself to hit the gym. Apparently, he was a little stressed. Humming tunelessly to herself, she looked up a station map on her com unit and set off to medical. It was best to get things like doctor visits over with right away. Maxi padded along with her. There were three figures in medical when she arrived. She looked for the brooding Azon and walked up to him. “Excuse me, are you Dirven?” He looked up from his notes and blinked. “Yes. Oh, you are the new Guardsman. Counsel, correct?” “Yes.” There was nothing else to be said. “Please, step under the scanner. You are lucky. Neurology is a speciality of mine, so I will actually know what I am looking for in a telepathic mind.” His smile flashed a set of teeth that Maxi would envy. “Oh, that reminds me. Do you need to check out my nylander?”
S
48
Seal the Deal He raised his brows, “Your what?” “My bond beast. We have a psychic connection.” She placed her hand on Maxi’s head and Dirven blinked. He apparently hadn’t noticed her pet. “Uh, that is going to require a separate file. Does she bite?” She looked at his sharp teeth and smirked, “Do you?” Sekhara could swear she saw a darkening of his skin. “Ahem. How about you first and you can help me with your pet later?” From the door, a voice answered him. “Bond animal and I can help you with Maxi. You need us both here for proper scans anyway. My patterns have changed.” Criton was slightly sweaty, but with his hair flipping into his eyes, he had never looked better. Sekhara bit her lip as her pulse skipped randomly. Raising his eyebrows, Dirven escorted her to the scanner and helped her situate herself under Criton’s watchful gaze. The scan concentrated on her head and when Dirven let out a low whistle, she tried to keep her head still. “What?” The Azon was staring at the readouts with rapt attention. “I have never scanned a true telepath before. Your mind is…fascinating.” Criton cleared his throat and his displeasure 49
Viola Grace tinged with jealousy made its way to her mind. Instantly, Dirven sat up and watched the change in the scan. “What was that?” Her green warrior was right behind the other male. “It was me. Sekhara and I have linked.” Maxi squeezed up next to Criton and Sekhara fought a smirk. “I have linked with Criton and am bonded to Maxi. We are a complete set.” Maxi’s happiness spilled over as Sekhara stroked her mentally with warm appreciation. Dirven quickly lifted a palm scanner and aimed it at Maxi. She snarled but didn’t move to bite. “Her mind has a subset of your brainwaves in it.” He pointed the scanner at Criton, “So does he.” “That is how a link works. I can use their minds to stabilize and bolster my own if I need to.” She smiled. “Is the scan done?” “Can you use your talent to read one of the people in this room?” “It is less a matter of reading than of communication, but yes.” So, this is how we are to spend our first and last day on the base? she asked Criton with a smile. He nodded and crossed his arms in confirmation. More or less. It will be shorter each time. Dirven just needs to draw a health baseline for you. I am perfectly fine. Yes, my dear link, you are. The images that he flashed into her mind were 50
Seal the Deal far from sanguine and she felt her blood pounding in her veins again. The machine sent out a chirp and Dirven released her from the scanner with a smile. “That is a perfectly healthy response, so I can report your endocrine system is functioning well. Have a good day.” As she stepped free, she nodded to Maxi. “Nylanders are venomous so you might want to get some inoculations for staff members who may have to watch her while I am down planet side.” Dirven was surprised, but he nodded before asking. “You are going to Balen?” “Yes, a seeking project. I am looking for a signal I saw earlier today.” She shrugged. “Well, you have a clean bill of health, so get a good night’s sleep and you can do your experimental seeking tomorrow.” He reached out and patted her on the shoulder. Both Criton and Maxi growled at him. Snickering, he took his hand off her shoulder and inclined his head toward the door. “Dismissed. Counsel is ready for active duty.” Criton wrapped and arm around her waist and gently persuaded her to follow him down the hall for a meal. She normally wasn’t too fond of men who smelled of sweat, but either he hadn’t worked out too long or her senses found his scent enticing. 51
Viola Grace Either way, she was quite happy to be against him as they moved toward the commissary. “You can usually find all of the Guardsmen on base here at mealtimes. It is one of the few social interactions with folks in the same job that we have.” The doors to the commissary were open and as they entered, murmurs of surprise greeted them. Sekhara was almost self-conscious before she realised that the attention was going to Maxi. “I will get Maxi some food and then dig in. It seems like forever since I had a good meal.” Criton grinned at her. “Then hand me the selections for the nylander and get yourself some food. What kind of partner would I be if I didn’t make sure that you got a good meal when it was offered?” She asked some pertinent questions and got a nice mix of food that Maxi could pick through. Criton tried to get to Maxi, but she was swamped with admirers cooing at her. Sekhara kept a watchful mind on Maxi while she filled her own tray. The nylander was enjoying the attention and so no one was in danger. When Sekhara went to the table, Maxi followed with a regretful sigh that dissipated when her bond mate patted the seat next to her and gave her a full plate of tasty treats. It was a little unusual, but having a bond mate 52
Seal the Deal eat on the floor was not something Sekhara was willing to do. Nylander manners were impeccable and she ate more neatly than some of the other species in the room. When Criton joined them, he raised an eyebrow at Maxi’s seating arrangement but didn’t say a word. Mealtime was lovely, a nice, quiet bonding of shared enjoyment and fullness as well as enjoyment for being on a stable surface once again. Their minds connected randomly, emotions shared and discarded, favourite foods discovered and offered to one another. Dirven and Kaylee arrived but gave their new union a wide berth. Sekhara wasn’t sure if it was the newness of their links or the strength of their bond, but she had never felt better in a working environment. This was what partnership should be. Not the whining and sobbing of an unequal match, but the true union of talents and souls. With a dangerous assignment looming on the horizon, she really needed to get some sleep, but until Criton joined her in her bed, it wasn’t going to happen. How was she to convince him that she didn’t want to wait until his detailed seduction took its course? Rushing a male with a plan was never a good idea. 53

Chapter Eight he Sector Guard shuttle was far more spacious than the Alliance transfer pod, but after a night spent with her mind tangling in his, Criton was much closer than he had been the day before. Clearance from Balen had been granted and they were on their way for the first attempt at pegging their attacker. Time was of the essence, because they didn’t want another Sector Guard shuttle to suffer in an attack. Tears of the Star was waiting for them on the surface and the moment that they touched down, she waved them over. “Come on, I have the perfect spot.” Counsel followed the woman who had the bloodlines of two avatars living in her veins. Her mother had died birthing her and her father had tried to protect her as long as he could. As first child of planetary and stellar avatars, people kept watch on what Tears of the Star was doing at any given moment. Her mate, Sovereign, was taking on the position

Seal the Deal of Stellar Avatar. His physiology was well suited to holding the power of a star within him. “Welcome to Balen, by the way. You get to be some of the first to walk on this part of the brand new world.” Zenina was grinning. “I feel honoured.” Counsel nodded and bowed formally. Zenina laughed, the planet Balen appearing in the change of colour of her eyes. “You need not be honoured. It is my pleasure to assist in the Sector Guard operations whenever possible.” Contract smiled. “And it is appreciated. Now, Counsel needs a place to sit.” Balen grinned. “I have just the thing.” The planetary avatar raised her hand above a plateau of rock and made a fist. There was a rumble and a huge throne began to emerge from the surface of the world. Counsel looked out over the wide expanse of the flat-topped mountain. Aside from their shuttle, there was not another item to mar the view. The air of Balen was crisp and clean, the streaks of clouds flirted with the sun. Zenina-Balen noticed her looking and gestured to the area around them. “We get our wildlife within the next six months. Our vegetation has already begun. It is a good thing that the rainforest grows so quickly. In less than a year, we will have fruit, insects and animals similar to the ones who 55
Viola Grace crossed my surface eons ago.” “It sounds like a lovely new start to your surface.” Counsel smiled politely. “It will be. Contract is scheduled to leave tomorrow and I am assuming that you are going with him.” Counsel looked at her partner curiously. “When were you going to tell me?” “When Haunt told me. We do tend to go where we are ordered to, after all.” He winked at her. “Don’t worry. You will be given your own assignments to carry out while we travel. With our ranks growing, we have needed someone with your experience to talk us through our darker times.” Zenina-Balen nodded. “There are things that no being should see and the Guard walk into it on a regular basis. They need all the help they can get.” Counsel nodded. “Well, on that note, I am going to try and seek out the target on my radar. Someone wants to create a hole in the Guard and I intend to find him.” The throne finished its rise to the surface and Balen waved her to it with a flourish. “Do what you can. I will be standing by.” Zenina-Balen stood aside and Counsel examined the chair. It was huge. Black basalt with threads of metal ore woven in, it was truly imposing. 56
Seal the Deal “I will feel like a child sitting in an adult chair, but here goes nothing.” She took a few steps forward only to be stopped by Contract. “Wait.” He sat in the chair and settled his arms on the rests, it looked perversely right. “Now, come here.” He patted his thighs and she grimaced but admitted to herself that it was the best way to work with their link. Gingerly, she backed up to the seat and let Contract lift her onto his lap, her thighs on his and his arms under hers. Maxi snuggled up against their legs. “This is very weird.” “Is it? I have seen links in very different positions over the years. This one seems decorous in comparison to some I have witnessed.” The tone of his voice was amused, but his body was heating beneath her dramatically. Squirming slightly, she tried to relax. “Ssh. I need to concentrate.” “How long will this take?” “Until I find him or give up and I rarely give up.” She settled completely against him and unknotted her muscles. As she breathed deeply, she separated her seeking mind from her body and sent it through the stars. The shattered wreckage that had struck them was her first stop. The trajectory of the blast led her 57
Viola Grace back to the site where hate swirled and festered in the vastness of space. He had been here for a while, lying in wait. The trail of his hate flowed in a column and disappeared, but that wasn’t what she was looking for. She didn’t want to know where he was going. She wanted to know where he came from. The trail of his mind should have been invisible to her, but he left residue in an energy path that mimicked his thought pattern. Tracking it back should not have been possible, but as the Education Center teachers told her while she was in training, her mind was one of a kind. As she searched, she could feel Criton’s mind around hers, protecting her. Counsel finally found something tempting. Minds, thousands of them. Some in pain, some sleeping and some in the throes of battle. All of them were wrapped in a huge asteroid that idly tumbled through space. Gotcha. Within the asteroid, another mind woke at her touch and a spear of pain came flying toward her on the psychic plane. Contract deflected the attack and in a moment, they were withdrawing back to the safety of Balen and their own bodies. Maxi was on their laps when they opened their eyes. Criton’s arms were around her and she felt 58
Seal the Deal both cared for and protected when she tried to stir. Sekhara’s hands and face were surprisingly warm considering the dimness of the light. Zenina-Balen smiled as Sekhara made eye contact. “I am glad to see you have made it out. Haunt has been questioning me every half hour for the last eight hours.” Unable to speak yet, she turned in Criton’s arms and laid a soft kiss on his lips. I am glad you were there, link. He pressed into her kiss and they clung together until he whispered, “I am glad I was as well.” Maxi broke them up by butting her head between theirs for her own dose of affection and cuddles. Once the nylander felt appreciated once again, they slowly moved to get to their feet. “I apologize for the delay, but I believe that we have some information that Haunt and the other base commanders will find interesting.” Her legs wobbled as she got to her feet, but the throne helped her keep her balance. Criton got up with only slightly stilted movements. He stretched and she had to admire the view. Stretching seemed like a good idea, so she bent to touch her toes and then stretched up to tickle the stars with her fingers. It was a stretch she had been taught in school and tickling the stars was always something that made her smile. 59
Viola Grace Heated interest spilled through her mind and she felt her skin heat as she turned to watch Criton watching her. Sekhara cleared her throat. “Thank you for watching over us, Zenina-Balen.” “It was nothing. It just took some doing to keep the heat on the plateau.” She smiled and bowed to them. “Haunt is aware that you are back and she is waiting for your report.” Criton laughed. “And on that note, we thank you once again. Will you travel with us to the base?” Zenina smiled. “No, I am waiting here for Sovereign and his radiation is still not completely under his control when we have moments together. It was why Balen crafted this plateau. It is a mating platform.” Sekhara blinked, “Then I wish you a most entertaining evening.” With his arm around her waist, they walked back to their small shuttle. The flight back to Station 13 was done in silence. Criton was busy flying and Sekhara was trying hard to figure out a way to explain what she had seen to Haunt. It was not going to be a nice conversation.

Chapter Nine hey were in a larger boardroom this time. Faces of not only Sector Guard base commanders, but also a heavy contingent from Udell base were on the screens. Haunt had introduced them and brought up the star map of the Wyoran sector. At the touch of a button, she displayed the readings by Wyoran satellites detailing the last known location of the asteroid. Counsel nodded and filled in the information she had gathered. “I sensed close to a thousand minds, most of them talents. A few of those on board are prisoners and they have no idea where they actually are.” Guardian leaned forward. “What do you know of the defences of the vessel?” She cleared her throat. “I didn’t have much time to look around, but one of the talents has some distance capability. They sent an attack at me that Contract deflected through our link. Without him, I would have succumbed to shock when that much

Viola Grace rage struck me. “These folk are angry, very angry, and they blame the Sector Guard for something. I did not get close enough to engage in more investigation and I would not recommend an attack until we have a chance to figure out what the hell they want.” She sat back and watched the base commanders discuss and plot based on her information. Criton put a hand on her shoulder and she leaned on him as she yawned. Haunt had provided a meal during the first debriefing while they waited for the other base commanders to wake and join the conference call. As she leaned against her partner, he rubbed her back slowly. The voices gradually got farther away and finally, she was able to rest. **** Haunt looked to Criton. “Is she all right?” The discussion continued over their heads, but Kaylee was looking at them with concern. His commander kept her voice low and he followed suit. “She is exhausted. Her mind went further under its own power than a jump engine. If not for Maxi and myself being linked to her, she would never have made it back. That attack was meant to 62
Seal the Deal paralyze and kill. I felt the impact, but I was only along for the ride, all I could do was deflect the hit.” Haunt looked closely at Sekhara. “She looks wiped out. Take her to bed and give Maxi a treat. You all did great work today. I will manage this lot.” Criton didn’t need to be told twice. He got to his feet, lifting his blue mate in his arms. She stirred slightly but didn’t wake. Her mind stayed in the clear mode of sleep. He held her tightly to his chest as they walked the halls of the station. A year ago, he had never imagined that a talent like hers existed, though he had heard rumours of the Citadel and its talent-training systems. With her blue skin, it was obvious that her family was from the northern continent. The pigment reflected the more aggressive solar radiation in the northern reaches. Her gold eyes had the power to freeze anyone in their tracks and the power behind those eyes was enough to make him slightly wary. She had not traipsed through his mind at any time, which was excellent. He was quite confident that if she saw the images in his mind featuring her, she would either kill him or run for the hills. He wanted those long blue limbs wrapped around him, wanted to see her golden eyes 63
Viola Grace unfocussed with pleasure. She murmured softly, her lips moving against his neck. He fought the growing ache in his groin as he made it to their corridor. Maxi ran ahead and triggered the door opening. It was with bittersweet relief that he placed her in her bed after flipping the blankets back with one hand. He tucked her into the bedding and sighed in relief. Her golden eyes opened sleepily and she caught his wrist in her hand. “Stay.” Criton closed his eyes cursing mentally in nine languages. “You need your sleep.” “Stay, please?” She looked up at him through her lashes and bit her lip. “Please, Criton?” He sighed, knowing when he was beat. “Fine, move over. I sleep on this side.” She smiled and squirmed over to the far side of the bed and then squirmed some more. He stripped his uniform down to the waist and crawled into bed with his link and partner. He reached out to grab her and froze when he touched nothing but the velvet of her skin. “Where is your suit?” She mumbled into the pillow, “I can’t sleep in clothes.” He shuddered as all the soft, warm skin was now exposed to him if he just took advantage of 64
Seal the Deal the situation. She scooted back against him and worked her butt against his groin. He could hear his teeth grinding together as he pulled her back to his chest. It was going to be a night of torture, but he could think of far worse uses of his time. He felt her mind slip back into sleep and behind him, Maxi took up the space he had left on the edge of the bed. Trapped between two females born on Wyora, he closed his eyes and considered himself a lucky male. **** Everything was calm and Sekhara felt remarkably well when she woke. The arms over her chest and belly were new, as was the warm male behind her. Wyoran skin had a distinctive feel and a male of her own species was definitely holding her. Criton’s mind was asleep, his deep breathing ruffled the hair along her neck and a slight shift of her legs let her know that the lower half of his uniform was still on. Relief and disappointment fought for supremacy in her thoughts. She really wanted to consummate their link and partnership, but being forward was not in her training. It seemed a little promiscuous to try to jump her partner two days 65
Viola Grace into knowing each other. On the other hand, she knew it would happen eventually, so why shouldn’t she pick the time? Now, she only needed to work up the nerve. She lay in his embrace for two hours before his mind woke up and absent desire was in his thoughts as well as the aroused flesh nestled against her butt. She relaxed her restraint and turned in his arms, meeting him with a kiss that sent both of their hearts pounding in seconds. He gripped her hip and pulled her hard against him, telling her without words what he wanted. Trembling with enthusiasm, she slid her thigh up so that it rested on his hip, opening herself to his touch without hesitation. Despite her eagerness, he slowed down, his touches exploring and engaging her senses while he worked his lips against her neck, grazing her with his teeth. Sekhara joined their minds completely, sharing every sensation with him as his touches woke her body with every stroke. Time slowed to a crawl and when he finally moved over her, her nails dug into his shoulders and held him to her with everything she had. They moved together, rocking in a heady beat until Sekhara’s senses blew apart and she dug her teeth into his shoulder. The bite had the desired 66
Seal the Deal effect and he responded with his own bite into her shoulder as he groaned and shook against her. They panted and Sekhara tried to still the whirling of her emotions in her mind. Linked sex was something whispered about in the Education Centre and she could finally see why. If students knew about the mind-blowing sensations that could be shared and magnified, they wouldn’t be able to hold a focus, let alone a link. As Criton moved off her, she had to admit that she wouldn’t blame them if they wanted to dump studies for sex. She was considering exactly that right now. He pulled her against him and covered her neck and shoulders with soft kisses, which were interrupted with a soft clearing of a throat. Haunt was standing near the foot of the bed, Maxi at her side. “I am sorry to interrupt, but Contract and Counsel have jobs to get to today. If you could grab a shower and some fresh uniform, I will meet you in my office.” Criton sighed, “There go my plans for the day.” Sekhara started to giggle and her laughter went with her into the lav and shower where she refreshed herself while losing the traces of their coupling. When Criton squeezed in next to her, she squeaked, but her laughter returned as he helped to make sure that she was as clean as she could be 67
Viola Grace before getting dressed in one of the spare uniforms that had waited for her in her quarters. Ready for action, and a day at their jobs, Contract and Counsel left their quarters with Maximus Extremus, prepared for anything.

Chapter Ten he new shuttle that they were flying was built with psychic attack in mind. Counsel couldn’t work her way out of the shuttlecraft with her thoughts no matter what she tried. “Well, I have to give it to Tech, this is quite the cage.” She watched Criton’s hands at the controls and thought about their early morning twining. He had been determined and thorough as he brought her to pleasure and she wanted to feel it again. “They will be making all of our ships more resistant to attack as soon as they can.” “I don’t like to be flying blind like this.” She rubbed at her forehead. “The only mind I can touch is yours.” “Feel free to do so.” His wink was unmistakable. “I don’t want to go running through your mind, but in light of circumstances, I might take you up on it.” She patted him on the arm and he turned his hand to weave his fingers with hers. The calm that came from that small touch

Viola Grace helped her breathe and keep herself relaxed while they flew to Jisar. “Let’s discuss the project we are on. I will go and meet with the council of Jisar to see how many animals they are willing to part with.” She dragged in a deep breath and clutched the data pad with her free hand. “And I will be contacting the Guardsmen that I have been assigned and who are waiting for a therapy session.” “And you will meet me back at the shuttle no later than dusk. Right?” He raised his eyebrow. “Well, since I have to leave the door of the shuttle open to be able to use my talent, I will say yes. It isn’t like I can go anywhere.” She chuckled. “I am simply looking forward to having you in my bed for a full night without having to worry about Haunt popping through the floor.” He raised her hand to his mouth and what he did was far more than a kiss and far less than she wanted. After hours of travel, they arrived at Jisar. Contract left to pursue the negotiations for fauna for Balen and Counsel set up a force shield around the ship since she could not do her work as a Minder and close the door at the same time. She took a reclining pose on the bunk with Maxi next to her. The data pad she had been given was fixed to one side so she could read it easily and she sent her mind out to find her first client. 70
Seal the Deal The location of her client was in the file, so there was no mystery as to the path her mind needed to take. When she found her client, she gently brushed along her mind to introduce herself. Hello, Neva. Hello, Counsel. Haunt said you would contact me today. Pleased to meet you. Call me Sekhara or Hara if you prefer. Thank you, Hara. I have been unsure as to how to bring this up to Haunt. Just tell me and it goes no further. Anything said during this consultation is private. In her mind, Neva sighed. We were on a retrieval and I saw a series of prisoners get torn to pieces. Literally, pieces. Counsel could see the memories in Neva’s mind. Using her talent, she burnished the edges, blurring them without making it apparent that they had been tampered with. She created a distance for Neva while the woman discussed her experiences with the Sector Guard to date. Being depicted as a Counsellor instead of a Minder didn’t sit too well with Sekhara, but this woman was in pain. She needed distance from it and that was what she was providing. Thank you, Hara. It feels better all ready. What? You’re a Minder. We all know about it. You know? Yes. I am not surprised. I haven’t been sleeping, but 71
Viola Grace like most Guardsmen, I am afraid that if I admit to an infirmity of the mind, they will take me off active duty. I don’t want that. I…see. A laugh rang through Neva’s mind. You don’t yet, but you will. This is the best job in the Alliance. You get to travel as much as you wish, wear a great uniform and you are guaranteed a mate that is compatible with you. Sending amusement through her link, she smiled. I am getting the point. Who picks our mates? Commander. He was the base commander of Morganti before Relay and is now travelling the stars with his wife, Pilot. They were the first Guardsmen. Have you met them? No, but I am a rabid reader. No data is safe. Also, Relay is a squealer. Chuckling at the image of the Relay gossiping, she sent the amusement down the link to Neva. Seriously, Hara. Thank you for dulling the memories. I want to keep them, but there is no way I could have worked that trauma out of my mind. Brav says he has the next appointment, try and see if you can make him forget where my birthmark is. Amused and amazed, Counsel said goodbye to her first patient and linked with her second. It was going to be an interesting session. Half an hour and a lot of laughter later, Sekhara heard a noise that should not have occurred. Maxi 72
Seal the Deal was growling. She quickly excused herself from the session with Brav and reoriented herself in her body before trying to move. Maxi was in front of her, teeth bared and venom dripping. Someone was hacking through the security screen. With the burst of her mind, she alerted Contract to the urgency of her need but didn’t have time to wait for a response. She rolled out of the bunk and grabbed the stunner, whirling to see three men entering the shuttle. Each was dressed in a matte black uniform, had deep violet skin, black hair, gold eyes and a weapon in their hand. A stun beam struck her hand and she dropped her weapon. “You will be sorry you even though about that Guardsman.” The first of them came forward, ignoring Maxi. That was a mistake. Maxi doubled in size, snarling and snapping with her back even with Sekhara’s shoulder. Two men fell in two rapid bites. The third ducked under Maxi’s neck and lunged for Sekhara. She waited until he was inches from her and struck out at him with a mind spike. With one move, she used the power that could propel her across galaxies on the psychic plane and she ripped his mind apart. The scream that rent the air chilled her, but she 73
Viola Grace watched the light in his eyes dim as he collapsed to the deck of the shuttle. His thoughts were dead, though his body was on autonomic reflex. If she could rebuild his mind, he could be a productive member of a society, but if a Minder didn’t structure a thought pattern within him again, his life would rapidly run its course. When Sekhara looked up again, Maxi was making sure that her venom had taken. The two other men were bleeding and going into anaphylactic shock. With a short huff, Maxi returned to her normal size and licked the blood off her fur. “What the hell happened?” Contract was in the doorway with the council members in tow. “I was attacked, but Maxi was here to help.” She went to him and took the hand he extended, surprised when he pulled her to him in a tight embrace. His low murmur in her ear reassured her. “Are you all right?” “I am fine, but we need to get the survivor to a facility where he can have his mind restructured.” Her words were as quiet as she could make them. He pushed her out at arms-length. “A survivor? I thought Maxi would have…” “No. One got past her. I had to take him down.” She smiled weakly. Her knees were wobbling and she sent the feeling of lightness to him. 74
Seal the Deal He sent her understanding and turned to the councillors. “I will be filing a report in regard to your security systems. No shuttle bay should have been this easy go get through. Now, if you will excuse me, we have a prisoner to attend to.” Take the bodies. Don’t leave the bodies. There is something strange about them. He caught her words. “And we will be taking the bodies with us. Now, please leave the shuttle so that I can get the prisoner taken care of.” The councillors bowed, expressed their apologies and made a run for it. Sekhara took her seat at the nav station and strapped in while Criton arranged their cargo. She remained quiet through the entire trip, taking Criton’s hand when he offered it. “Do you know who they are?” She sighed, “No, and I had to stop him quickly. Or I would have. Damn it. I shouldn’t have panicked.” “You were outnumbered and unarmed. There was no option for you. Your talent is the only thing that you could have used.” “I could have used Trensor training. I just was a little disoriented from quickly having to snap back into my body.” “You were in a session?” “Just finishing one when I heard Maxi growl. Maxi doesn’t growl.” 75
Viola Grace “Do you know what they are?” She rubbed her forehead. “No, but I think the Sector Guard might just hold the answer to that.” He ceased his questions and they returned to base using every bit of speed their ship possessed.

Chapter Eleven woman made of rainbows with delicate wings stood next to a male Kozue. “Yes, it’s one of mine. He’s a Vorwing. I just don’t know how they happen to be in such numbers.” Sylvan, also known as Green was partnered with Garoz or Hardcore. She was on base and managed to make the identification using senses that Sekhara couldn’t fathom. “Do you know anything about your people?” She couldn’t help but ask. Her partner scowled at Sekhara. “She was sold to a carnival as a child, found abandoned in a mine.” “Ah, I see.” Sylvan smiled and put her hand on Sekhara’s. “You can look through my mind, but I don’t think you would find any information.” She sighed. “I suppose not. What are Vorwings? I have never even heard of them before.” The man on the bed breathed slowly, his eyes closed and his pulse lethargic. Dirven had him in

Viola Grace restraints and not one of the Guards had objected once they saw the three-inch spines folded flat against his wrists. Sekhara remembered the raised hand coming down toward her and she had shuddered imagining what could have happened if he made contact. As a group, they left the Vorwing in his confinement and returned to a boardroom where food was out for them. Haunt nodded and set the recorders. “Now, Counsel, what happened.” She nodded. “I was finishing my sessions and heard Maxi growl. She was next to me but no longer on the bed. She was on the floor and watching the open doorway.” Haunt interjected. “Why was the door open?” “The new shielding that is on that shuttle blocks my talent, so in order to meet my patients on the psychic plane, I needed to open the door and put an energy shield in place. They broke through the shield.” “Thank you. Proceed.” “I reintegrated myself to my body and stood up, sending a distress call to Contract. Maxi moved between me and the door, her venom had started to drip.” “What does that signify?” “There is a hostile psychic presence. Nylanders 78
Seal the Deal are empathic as are many things on Wyora.” “Thank you, proceed.” “I grabbed a stunner, but when I turned around, three males of an unknown species burst through the door. My hand was struck with a stun bolt and I dropped my weapon. Maxi moved between the men and me and doubled in size, biting and chewing. She got two men but the third came toward me, his arm raised.” This was the part that would cost Sekhara her career. “I used a mind spike on him when he got close enough. His mind was torn apart and he slowly stopped thinking, dropping to my feet.” Haunt spoke to the recordkeeping device. “And this explains the large bite marks on the corpses. The nylander was more than twice her natural size.” “Correct.” She nodded. “And when Contract arrived?” “I mentioned taking the bodies with us. We needed to know what they are. They have a similar mind print to the one we were looking for and I thought they would be useful.” Haunt agreed. “Learning that they are Vorwings is an interesting point.” Green added. “They were not fully developed either.” Hardcore grunted. “If they were, they should have shifted colour like Green did. They have not 79
Viola Grace used their power completely at any point. Did they have wings?” Haunt checked the medical reports. “Amputated wings, but one body looked like the wings were growing back.” Green nodded. “Okay, this is starting to make a little sense to me. It will take a while to work out the details, but I have to say one thing. The Vorwings might be coming back and it is all my fault.” Haunt quickly clipped off the recorder and hushed her Guardsman. “You are not at fault.” Sylvan sighed and leaned against her mate. “In our travels, several more primitive cultures have worshipped me as a deity. They were surprised that I have not mated with one of my own. Apparently, what I have done is a sacrilege. To mate with a normal being of a race not my own is not something that has ever been acceptable in the mythology of the Vorwing. That is what it is, you know, a mythology. No one has seen my kind for centuries and now the Sector Guard are seeing talent organizations kidnapping and murdering around the Alliance. There is a lot of power at the heart of this and power is one thing that the Vorwing can easily manipulate.” An idea struck Sekhara. “Sylvan, may I read your patterns?” “Will it hurt?” 80
Seal the Deal “No. It might tickle, but I only want to look closely and prefer to have permission.” She smiled. “Then by all means.” Sekhara took a detailed look and her eyes widened at her findings. She flicked her fingers and Criton handed her a data pad. As quickly as she could, she created a map of the thought patterns of a powered-up Vorwing. When she finished her looking, she rubbed her neck. “Holy stars.” When Haunt looked at the map and brought up the recording of the initial attack, she whistled. “Well, Green, I hate to tell you. You are not alone in the Alliance anymore. There is a powered-up Vorwing out there and he is coming for the Sector Guard.” Curled up in Criton’s bed with Maxi at their feet, Sekhara sighed. “I didn’t sign on for a war.” “It isn’t a war. We are still going to engage in our normal activities. We simply need more personnel on each assignment.” “More Guardsmen?” He shrugged and she rode his chest as his shoulders moved. “Perhaps, but I think Morganti has been anticipating something of this nature.” “How could they possibly know that this was coming?” He chuckled. “Seers. Premonitions. Hunches. 81
Viola Grace Whatever you call it, Morganti has always been the base prepared for the vanguard of any action.” “I see, so how are they prepared?” He ran a hand through her hair and twisted it so that he could hold her head for his kiss. “You are a Minder, you took some Citadel training, you figure it out.” She left her paranoia behind and lost herself to his embrace. The Citadel, yes, that would have the psychically trained personnel that the Sector Guard needed to keep themselves in this dangerous game. Here was hoping that the operatives were up for the challenge…

Author’s Note Thanks for joining me in the Sector Guard. The Vorwings were first mentioned in Hardcore Green. Sylvan was the first female Vorwing seen in quite a while. There is only one more book in the numbered Sector Guard series. Pilot in Command. I will tell you how Helen and Hyder first met and how the gears of the Sector Guard started turning. After Pilot in Command, we will get a little more serious in the first of the Tales of the Citadel. It will be a series that involves psychic warriors teamed with Sector Guard partners. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Thanks for reading, Viola Grace
