Chapter One
“Please stop staring at me.” Emily Scarlet grimaced at Maggie, her sister-in-law and best friend. She scanned the faces in the line leading to the marquee, concentrating on the male ones before turning back to Maggie. “I checked my makeup in my compact mirror five minutes ago. I know I haven’t colored outside the lines so quit with the bulging eyes. It’s not attractive. Don’t you want to catch a man?” Emily’s hips swayed in time to the catchy beat of the song the band played and mentally checked off the faces while eagerness built. No. No. Possibly…

“I can’t help it,” Maggie muttered. “You look so different.” Her eyes were full of confusion as she checked out Emily’s radically changed appearance. Emily knew she looked different. Better. The vision she’d seen in the bedroom mirror this evening still had the power to surprise her. The sexy, layered haircut and the new golden highlights that shot Emily from mousy to head-turning. The figure-hugging red dress that ended mid-thigh and showcased Emily’s recent weight loss. The strappy black heels that made her legs appear long and toned. The blue contact lenses to correct her shortsightedness. And the breasts that were pushed up and out by the incredible strapless bra she wore. Maggie’s brow crinkled in distress. “You’re not the Emily Scarlet I know. I don’t think Michael—” “Michael is dead.” Pain darkened Maggie’s face. “It’s only been six months. Don’t you think you should take some more time before you make changes?” Emily bit back the cutting reply that leapt to the tip of her tongue. Michael had cheated. He’d lied. The morning of the car accident, Michael had told her he intended to leave her for his secretary. Boring little Emily didn’t compare favorably with the glamorous Tessa. Too frumpy. Too predictable for Michael’s taste. He hadn’t even given her a chance! Impotent anger grew when she replayed the painful scene. Emily gripped her black clutch bag so tightly the box of condoms inside buckled beneath the pressure of her fingers and the cellophane wrapping gave a telltale crackle. She relaxed her grip and inhaled slowly, trying to push away the ugly past. Bottom line. He hadn’t loved her. Emily fixed a smile on her mouth. She didn’t want to argue with Maggie or blurt out the truth about Michael in a burst of temper. Not after keeping quiet and protecting the family’s illusions for all this time. They had loved Michael, and she wasn’t about to hurt the people she cared for even if their son and brother was a dirty, cheating scumbag. She’d suffered enough for them all. Emily spied a tall, dark-haired man standing with a group just inside the flower-bedecked marquee. Her gaze strolled the length of his body, coming to rest on a very touchable butt. She sighed with appreciation and wished he’d turn around so she could check the whole package. He remained standing with his ass pointing in her direction. Delectable. She put him on her mental list and glanced back at Maggie. “Coming to Middlemarch is about having fun.” The line moved forward and Emily tugged two tickets from the depths of her clutch bag before draping the long strap over her shoulder. “It’s all about sex,” Maggie snapped. “They have a shortage of women in Middlemarch. I’ve read the papers. This isn’t a dance. It’s a meat market.” “Yeah, great, isn’t it?” Emily chuckled, attracting the attention of the same group of men she’d just ogled. She winked at them before turning back to Maggie. “You didn’t have to come with me. I told you I was happy to come on my own. I promised to turn into a pumpkin at midnight, catch the train back to Dunedin and stumble into a taxi at the other end, tired and all danced out like a good Cinderella. But you insisted on coming. The least you can do is enjoy yourself. Dance. Let your hair down. Come on, you know you love to dance.” “I don’t know you in this mood. You’ve changed.”

Laughing, Emily gave Maggie a quick, reassuring hug. “I’m just the same. And tonight we’ll dance the night away with some cute country boys before heading back to the big, bad city. Okay?” She handed over their tickets with a bright smile toward the elderly woman sitting behind the wooden desk at the entrance to the marquee. Maggie was right. She had changed. She wasn’t the same doormat Michael had walked all over before discarding. No longer the little homemaker. The drudge. This Scarlet woman planned on having a little fun.
“Oh, man. Look at the tits on her.” Felix made kissing noises deep in his throat. “I’ve died and gone to heaven. Oh, man. She winked. Yep, heaven.” Sly thumped his brother on the back. “Don’t think it’s heaven, bro. Can’t be with all that sinful lust shining on your face.” “Cut it out, the pair of you,” Saber said, trying to scowl his boisterous younger brothers into obedience. Despite laying down the law this afternoon, the four were out of control. He had to get them settled before one of their harmless pranks boiled over into something that threatened them all. “Yeah, gotta remember, this is punishment,” Leo chided, humor dancing in his dark eyes. Joe let out a low whistle. “I vote the lady in red administers my punishment.” Saber relaxed a fraction. Good. His plan was working already. If he managed to get each of his brothers mated, they’d cut out the mischievous shenanigans and settle down to raise a litter or two. And he wouldn’t have to worry about articles in the paper like the one he’d seen last month. Black panther sighted again. At least the article had lit a match under the council elders. Finally. Agreement that they needed to do something to help the younger males settle. Saber’s mouth firmed in introspection as he recalled the heated meeting. The council had discussed the lack of females of marriageable age. They knew the causes—the feline families tended to have male offspring while the human females seemed to enjoy the lifestyle offered in the city of Dunedin or farther afield. They attended high school and university in the city and never returned to their birthplace. The human males left too, but they tended to return after exploring a little of the world outside Middlemarch. Until the reporter’s story had appeared, no one had tried to solve the problem of a lopsided gender ratio. The article in the paper had been the catalyst. They’d all swung into action to organize a dance they hoped would benefit both the young shifter and human males living in Middlemarch. The task they’d called impossible suddenly became imperative. Saber eyed Felix and Leo, the brothers standing closest to him, feeling the tension brought about by responsibility coalesce into a solid lump in his chest. They both strenuously denied taking part in the prank, but Saber wasn’t so sure. He knew his brothers—where there was fun to be had, they were in the thick of it. Felix nudged Sly. “Big bro’s looking serious. He’s got Mission Mate on his mind again.” Joe leaned closer and whispered, “Can’t have shape shifters roaming around Middlemarch for the humans to see.”

“Enough,” Saber snapped. His brothers sobered, knowing they’d pushed him far enough tonight. Dammit, he had to find them mates. It was too late for him. But not for them. None of his brothers remembered how it had been between their parents. They’d been too young when they died, but Saber remembered how they’d laughed and played together, how they’d made everything seem like a game, even the work on the farm. Yes, he remembered the intimacy between his parents, and that’s what he wanted for his four brothers. “Look, we said we’d go along with this plan,” Felix said. “We’ll give it a shot. Me first. Introduce me to the lady in red.” The lady in red. The second brother to mention her. Curiosity piqued, Saber turned to check out the view. His breath stalled until the tight vise around his lungs reminded him to breathe. Saber inhaled sharply, his nostrils flaring, feline genes kicking in. Hewanted the lady in red. But that wasn’t the purpose of this shindig. Saber consciously relaxed, telling himself she was too obvious. The invitation a little blatant for his taste, but she might spark the urge to mate in one of his brothers. “Fine. We’re next in line for introductions anyway.” He watched one of the elders walk up to the lady in red and offer his arm. The lady smiled, and Saber adjusted his thoughts. A touch of vulnerability flitted across her pale face before she answered a question posed by the elder. Wistfulness. Hope. She treated the elder with courtesy and respect, earning points from Saber. He’d noticed the impatience of some of the other women waiting to enter the marquee. Excitement jumped in him. This plan would work. The lady in red would make a fine sister-in-law. The elder led her toward him and his brothers. Saber indicated Felix with a jerk of his head, but the elder stopped in front of him. “May I present Joanna Scarlet?” the elder said. “This is Saber Mitchell.” “Just call me Jo,” the lady in red murmured, her voice a low, sensual hum that speared through him, winding his stomach in knots of desire and lust and uncharacteristic possessiveness. Her attractive floral scent reminded him of old-fashioned flowers and herbs. Maybe a touch of vanilla. It seeped deep into his lungs, drawing him in like a helpless insect. Saber sighed. His Scarlet woman. If his brothers didn’t stop with the leering, he was going to smack some manners into them. Whoa…his? She studied them all with frank interest and nodded when the elder introduced his brothers. Shock finally yielded to common sense and the voice of reason. Saber saw Joanna—call me Jo—was chatting to another elder and a plump dark-haired girl who had stopped at their side. “Okay, boys. You’ve had your joke. How much did they pay you, Sid?” The elder offered a gentle but determined smile and spoke in a low undertone so the lady didn’t hear. “Lad, you need a mate. This one is for you.” A protest formed in Saber. He didn’t have a destined mate. And he’d accepted his fate to travel through life alone when his search during his younger days had turned up nothing but entertaining sexual partners. The elder was wrong.Wasn’t he? He glanced at Joanna Scarlet and battled the bolt of lust that zapped the length of his body again. Beneath his trousers, his cock stirred with definite interest. Every sense

jumped to hyper-alert. He smelled her delicate floral perfume and the underlying feminine scent specific to her. Heard her slow, steady breaths. Saber could practically feel her body pressed against his. She called to him on every level. Pushing aside the panicked, out-of-control sensation, he aimed for nonchalance. Oh, yeah. He couldn’t deny he was interested, but what if it was a false alarm? What if he was disappointed again? Saber answered his own question with a silent grunt. He’d pick himself up and carry on. That’s what he’d do. That’s what he always did. “Not frightened of the little lady, are you, Saber?” A clear taunt colored Felix’s whispered words. When Saber glanced at his other brothers, he saw amusement and unholy glee. Ambushed. In his own trap. Saber turned to Jo, accepting the hand fate and the elders had dealt him. “Would you like to dance?” “I’d love to,” she murmured, tucking her hand in his. Her fingers were cool to the touch, but Saber knew instinctively this was a façade. The lady possessed hidden fires, flames as hot as her Scarlet name. Suddenly he wanted to tend and stoke the fires until they flared out of control. But not here. Not with everyone looking.
Emily moved into his arms, her heart giving an excited blip. When a slow ballad started, she moved automatically across the grass dance floor. Her heels sank into the grass so she danced on tiptoe, balancing easily in his arms. Her bag swayed against her hip with each move, its contents a silent reminder of what she wanted to achieve tonight. Call me Jo. She had no idea what had possessed her to tell everyone her name was Joanna. Cinderella syndrome? Perhaps. Because tonight she felt like a fairy-tale character. The lure of fun and mischief called, enticing her to outrageous thoughts of a one-night stand. Her mouth firmed with determination. Thoughts she intended to carry out. She tipped back her head to study the man—Saber Mitchell. About six inches taller than her, the man had short, dark hair and light green eyes. Intense green eyes full of sensual promises. Emily shivered with longing. The touch of a male. Sex. It had been so long. Touches of humor lurked at the corners of his beautiful eyes and lips as if he smiled often. Put together, his features were attractive and pleasing to her eye. The muscles beneath her fingers were strong and his tan, along with his calloused fingers, told her he worked outdoors. Although the man was difficult to read, Emily sensed a wide vein of integrity ran within. She’d watched him with his brothers while they’d waited to enter the marquee. Yep, he was perfect in his tight black trousers, the white cotton shirt and contrasting red tie. The exact opposite of Michael. A few more subtle tests would tell if he’d qualify asthe man. Was he married for one? She wasn’t about to break up a marriage, not since she’d been on the receiving end of a triangle. Ditto any serious relationships. Once she’d cleared up these questions, it was full steam ahead. Emily knew it was irresponsible, foolhardy, a few other things as well, but she wanted to feel a man’s body wrapped around

her, she wanted the closeness and the intimacy even if it was for just one night. Heck, she plain wanted sex. Playing alone didn’t cut it any longer. Emily needed to know she was desirable, that a man wanted her. Tonight was the night. Emily had come prepared with condoms, and since she’d continued with her birth control after Michael’s death, she was as protected as she could be against an unwanted pregnancy. Now all she needed was the man… She moved closer to temptation and inhaled his scent. “You smell good,” she murmured. Wow, great start.Scintillating conversation . Saber chuckled, his chest moving beneath her hand. And a very nice chest it was, too. Her fingers flexed on his white cotton shirt, her nails digging into the resilient flesh beneath. The man made a dark sound deep in his throat like a purr. A delicious tremor swept the length of her body, pooling blood low in her belly. Oh, yeah. Tonight. Saber held her loosely within his arms. His hands slipped down the silky fabric of her dress to hover around her hips. “Did you come from Dunedin on the train?” “Don’t you mean the ‘love train’?” Emily said with a wide grin, remembering the silly surge of exhilaration when she’d read the ad in the paper.Catch the love train to Middlemarch. Something inside had urged her to buy a ticket, so there she was—one impulse and a train ride later. “Yes, I’m a city girl.” The warmth of his hands through her dress hiked her pulse rate. A bit difficult to concentrate when they were so close. Yet, contrarily, she didn’t want to move an inch. His dark brows rose in challenge. “Slumming it or interested in marrying a country boy?” “Slumming it” implied slut while marriage sounded a whole heap worse. After the disaster with Michael, Emily wasn’t willing to tie herself to another man. Michael had blown her trust right out of the water, and his behavior had left hurt that went soul deep. She’d thought they’d grow old together, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Her breathing hitched. The ache of betrayal would take time to heal. And Emily didn’t intend to jump into another relationship without a lot of thought and soul-searching. Emily wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice. Saber cleared his throat in a non-verbal prod, but Emily refused to touch the provocative query so she prevaricated, offering distraction instead. “I’m a widow. My husband died six months ago.” “I’m sorry.” Regret chased the instant sympathy she saw on his face, warming her starved body and mind. The man intended to back off—if that was what she wanted. Gut instinct told her she’d lucked out straight away and found the man to make her feel like a woman again. At least she could have that, even if she never had love again. “It’s okay. What do you do here in Middlemarch? Are you married?” Emily had no intention of discussing Michael. Just thinking about the rotter chased her good mood away. Desperately wanting to live in the moment instead of the past, Emily lifted a hand to caress Saber’s cheek. A sudden smile stole her breath and made her hand falter. Stung by the unthinking intimacy she’d just committed, Emily jerked her hand back to her side as if she’d touched something burning hot. Saber grabbed her trembling hand and raised it to lie over his heart, a gleam in his eyes. Emily shuddered inwardly, the heat traveling up her arm and dispersing through her body until she tingled all over. Oh, boy. This man was good.

“My brothers and I run the family farm,” he murmured, continuing the conversation without difficulty. “Our family has lived here for four generations. No, I’m not married and no serious relationships.” A slow, sinful grin crawled across his mouth and settled, pulling a return smile from her. “Although that might change. Any other questions?” “Sheep?” Diversion! “Mostly,” Saber replied without missing a beat. “A few cattle and crops as well.” A sharp jolt from an exuberant couple next to them shoved her firmly against Saber’s chest. He drew her tightly against him until they were connected knee to chest, his large erection pushing against her belly. Their eyes met and Emily’s breath caught. He wanted her, too. His head lowered and he brushed his firm lips across hers. A test, she decided, when he pulled away a fraction, green eyes studying her closely. “My dance,” a voice said. “Bro, you can’t keep Jo to yourself all night.” They pulled apart abruptly, the masculine voice a shock to the intimate moment. Emily frowned at the new arrival with his sexy grin and shaggy dark hair. He quirked a brow at her, drawing an unwilling smile despite her irritation at the intrusion. She and Saber were just getting acquainted. This—a kiss—was a momentous occasion. She could do without interruptions. Her gaze drifted from the newcomer to Saber. A brother. Attractive. Good genes ran in the Mitchell family. “Felix. Go away,” Saber muttered, tugging Emily back into his arms. “Find your own lady.” Felix persisted. “That woman reporter is here. She wants to talk to you about the panther sightings.” He winked at her. “Very nice flowery scent in the body lotion you use. Smells like a mixture of lavender and herbs. Makes me want to come closer and smell just behind your ear. I think I’d like to lick as well.” Emily’s mouth dropped open. Saber froze, his hands tightening around her shoulders. His laugh was short and impatient. “Keep away from Jo,” he snarled, scowling at his brother. “I told the woman when she rang that coming here was a waste of time. The tourists who reported the sighting had been drinking all afternoon. It’s a wonder they didn’t see talking dogs or purple people eaters with an alien or two sprinkled in for variety. According to Jenny, down the road, they’re big this year. Why the hell won’t the woman take no for an answer? She’s chasing alcohol-induced dreams.” “She obviously needs the facts reiterated in person. You go and talk to her. I’ll look after Jo for you.” Felix smirked at his brother. “I don’t think so. This won’t take long, Jo.” He studied her intently, the corners of his eyes crinkled with silent humor. “Would you like to come with me?” He was asking her for more than a walk to chat with the reporter. It was evident in the devilish glint in his mesmerizing eyes. Emily never hesitated. “Yes.” They strolled hand in hand across the dance floor. Emily caught Maggie’s look of censure as they passed her dancing with one of Saber’s brothers. Emily hesitated, but her friend’s compressed mouth and scowl looked so much like Michael’s she kept walking.

“Changed your mind?” Saber’s lazy drawl sent a shiver racing straight to her core. “No.” Her gaze traced his firm lips. How would they feel closing around her nipples? Or touching her in a more intimate kiss? Heat suffused her body along with yearning. Between her legs moistened, the dampness making her fidget. “That must be her over there with Sid,” Saber muttered. “Let Felix cope with her nosy questions. We’ll sneak past while she’s not looking.” With a furtive glance over his shoulder, he hustled Emily from the marquee. A gurgle escaped Emily when they slipped past into the growing darkness outside. After the foot-stomping gaiety inside, it seemed very quiet. Private. A sliver of disquiet stalked down her spine. She was doing the right thing, wasn’t she? Saber squeezed her hand, seeming to sense her unease. “We don’t have to do anything. Yet.” The light cast shadows across his face but it was difficult to miss the decidedly carnal smile. Sex. She could cope with that. No commitments. No need to get hurt because there were no promises made. Impulsively she headed for the shadows cast by a stand of poplar trees. Dried leaves crunched underfoot, her heels sinking halfway to China with each step. She yanked free and rolled her eyes in exasperation. “I didn’t think about walking on grass in heels.” “How about taking them off?” Saber knelt in front of her, his calloused fingers sliding across her ankle. Emily inhaled and held her breath. He undid the tiny buckle and slid her bare foot from the shoe. Emily grasped his shoulders to balance, her heart pounding. A balmy breeze blew, tugging at her loose curls. Saber undid the other buckle, and she lifted her foot for him. Instead of standing, he remained kneeling in front of her. Her heart skipped a beat. Her sex clenched, and she was very aware of the arousal dampening her panties. Saber could smell her excitement. Hear the racing of her heart. She tensed when he massaged the arch of her foot, but Saber took his time until she relaxed and a whimper of pleasure escaped her parted lips. He continued to massage her foot, noticing the sexy red toenails. Jo was a strange contrast—skittish at times, and yet, strangely forward and wanton at others. Would the real Scarlet woman step forward? He slid his palm across a heel and up her smooth calf, savoring the silky skin and the floral scent of the lotion she’d smoothed onto her body. His cock throbbed, large and eager, pushing insistently against his fly and Saber was right there with his lower brain. Interested. Desperate to bury his cock in her warm, luscious heat. Desperate to taste her natural juices and watch her shatter in his arms. His hand rose to the sensitive skin behind her knee, surprising a giggle out of her before drifting higher across her warm inner thigh. Slow—when what he really wanted was hard, fast. Hot and heavy with not an ounce of gentleness involved. Saber struggled with wooing her instead of demanding. Taking. Because the closer they came to consummation, the more he thought Sid might be right. After all this time, his mate had sashayed into his life, and she’d almost escaped because he hadn’t noticed, he’d become used to being alone. His Scarlet woman. He fingered her through her panties. Intimately. Her gasp was loud in the still evening, disturbed only by the throb of the band and the wail of the female lead singer. “I want you,” she whispered. “Here. Now.” Her blue eyes glittered in the half-light beneath

the trees. Anyone could see, but she didn’t seem worried. Her bag slipped off her shoulder and she let it fall to the grass. “Please,” she whispered. The relief Saber felt was countered by the relentless throb at his groin. God, he was desperate to grab her offer and plunge inside her tight channel, taking her hard and fast until they both burned. But he wasn’t so far gone that he forgot about privacy. That woman investigating the panther sighting would hunt them down if her previous behavior was any indication. She was certainly tenacious, firing letters off to several of the council members asking for information. Since he’d been voted as the one to communicate with her, he’d answered the initial politely worded letter with one of his own, refuting the idea of mystery cats near Middlemarch. She’d ignored his reply and followed her letter with persistent phone calls and now a visit, despite his assertions she was chasing non-existent ghosts. Still, she kept pushing. He refused to give her material to publish in the tabloid press. About black panthers or the modern sexual techniques of a closet shifter. She might pretend she was researching a book, but it had been her byline attached to the newspaper article. Despite his assertions she was chasing ghosts, the woman remained resolute and, deep down, he didn’t expect that to change. Saber stood abruptly, lifted Joanna into his arms and strode toward the next stand of trees across the other side of the paddock. “My shoes and bag.” “You won’t need them.” When she opened her mouth to argue, Saber paused to kiss her, tempted by the sexy curve of her bottom lip. Just one quick taste—enough to make them both crazy. Minutes later, he put her down. They were further away from the marquee and possible interruptions. The hoot of a morepork drowned out the band, and when the echo of the lonely cry died, only silence remained. A gentle breeze ruffled the leaves. They responded with a placid song, a serenade for the sensual dance to come. Jo slid down his body, arching against him with a sound that reminded him of a contented purr. Apt. Very apt. Saber buried his face against the crook of her neck, breathing in her scent. Without warning, the ripple of awareness preceding the shift to cat slid seductively across his skin. Goose bumps prickled. A faint glow emanated from his hands. He hissed in alarm and fought, gritting his teeth. Fighting the change with everything he had. Panting. “Are you all right?” Shit, this had never happened before. His father hadn’t mentioned the strange phenomenon when they’d hadthe sex talk. Their Uncle Herbert, who’d taken on the guardian role after his parents’ death, hadn’t discussed the oddity either. Maybe it was something peculiar to him? Saber gritted his teeth, resisting the shift toward feline with all his might. He inhaled sharply, struggling to remain in control, to remain in his human form. Pity Uncle Herbert wasn’t there to offer advice—the elderly man had passed away two winters ago. Exhaling slowly, he kissed and nibbled at the soft skin beneath her ear while he wondered what to do. There wasn’t anyone else to ask, not without suffering an incredible amount of embarrassment. “Turn around,” he ordered, trying to hide his panic. “Put your hands against the tree.” “Why?” So you can’t see me.“I want to touch your ass. Besides, this will be easier. I don’t want to get grass stains on your dress.”And I want to take you in the traditional way from behind , he added silently, every particle of him wanting to dominate, to seize her by the scruff of the neck and exert his power. He wanted to mark her with his scent, his teeth, and make sure no other male dared to approach his woman.

Because she belonged to him, whether she knew it or not. It was just a matter of time… “Oh.” Uncertainty shaded her reply but to his relief, she followed his order, turning her back to him and placing her hands palm down on the tree trunk. Saber wasted no time, not wanting her to change her mind. He slid his hands beneath the short red dress. Warm skin. Temptation. His skin prickled all over again, and when he slid his fingers beneath the elastic of her panties, a fine tremor swept through him. Saber tested her readiness, dipping his fingers beneath the crotch of her panties. She was wet for him, he realized with relief. As ready for this as he was. He could hurry the process and stop the surge of feline genes. Or not. The temptation to hover in between pulled at his willpower. It would be so good fucking her with his feline senses engaged. Slowly, he trailed his fingers the length of her cleft, stopping just short of her clit. Jo cried out, gripping the trunk tightly. “Don’t tease me. Please.” Like a tree in a fierce storm, her slender form shook violently. Intrigued, Saber repeated the move before yanking at her panties. The flimsy lace tore and he tossed them aside, leaving her bare and accessible to his touch. A feral grin spread and with it, his canines lengthened. “Bend forward a little more,” he ordered, cupping her bottom. Beautiful, firm globes filled his hands. He swallowed, forcing aside his urge to bite, to mark her as his own and let their enzymes mingle to seal the bond. It was too soon, and she wouldn’t understand. The human woman needed wooing… He made do with licking carefully, running his tongue across the firm, fragrant flesh and delving between her legs, pushing the tip of one finger into her pussy. Her back arched and she pushed her butt back, driving his finger deeper into her clinging womb. “I want to touch you,” she protested. “Kiss you. I want you to touch my breasts with your mouth.” “Soon,” Saber promised, biting back a chuckle. Demanding wee thing. “You want me to touch your breasts?” “Yes. Please. And you could bite me,” she added in a thick voice. “I think I’d like that.” “That could be arranged, kitten.” He’d love to bite her. In fact, his feline genes demanded he do a little biting. But he didn’t think she was ready for a display of his feline preferences, despite her verbal urging. Or the sharpness of his teeth. Instead, Saber played, testing his willpower. Part of him wished they’d taken the time to find a bed so he could unwrap her like a parcel and kiss each luscious body part revealed. He ran the tip of his finger across her clit in a brief, teasing foray, intending to give her what she wanted. Soon. Another circling pass of his finger around her swollen flesh brought a gasp. She trembled. Her soft cry of pleasure filled the evening. Saber’s breathing quickened. His balls tightened until they ached. Increasingly urgent hunger forced him to hurry. She was tight but so wet for him already. They’d barely started. It was going to be good between them. He knew it. “So sweet,” he murmured. Teasing her slippery folds nudged his need higher. The deep sound he issued was throaty. Close to a dull roar and when he glanced down, he saw his forearms were more densely furred than normal. God, his change was out of control. Maybe if he fucked her quickly and gained release, he could stop. No way did he want to change now. He’d scare the life out of her and with the large number of strangers around, someone was bound to witness a black leopard stalking the marquee.

With his luck, it would be the reporter, and he’d never hear the end of it from his brothers. “Touch me again,” she whispered, thrusting her butt against his groin. The pressure of his erection against his trousers became painful. Saber ripped open his fly and let his cock spring free. Thank goodness, he’d dispensed with underwear tonight. Less clothing to remove. He leaned forward and bit the soft skin beneath her ear. Not too hard as to alarm her or draw blood, but enough to give her pleasure along with the nip. Keep her interested. Keep her concentrating on the sex so she wouldn’t think about wanting to see the man who fucked her from behind. He held his erection in his fisted hand and pumped once. A drop of seminal fluid formed at the very tip of his penis. Saber bit her lightly again, reveling in the taste of her—the sexy moan that came from deep in her throat. He wondered what she’d do if he claimed her at the same time, pinning her down and forcing her to submit. God, he wanted to so badly, despite common sense telling him to wait. Stepping close, he dipped slightly, aligning his cock at her entrance. Jo groaned and pushed back against him in silent demand. Saber let out a snarl and surged deep. Hard and without warning. He squeezed his eyes shut, savoring the feel of her inner walls clinging and clutching at him. Heat, hotter than he’d ever felt before, scorched him, eroding his restraint. He withdrew until just the tip of his penis rested inside her cunt before plunging deep. They both groaned. “Again,” Jo muttered. “Harder.” “My pleasure.” Saber pushed inside again, gritting his teeth at the tightness. He trembled, wanting to pound into her over and over but held back, not wanting to hurt or scare her despite her demands. He had to be sure. “I won’t break,” Jo protested. “I need more.” The pleading note in her voice pushed past his restraint. Saber hammered into her, splaying a hand over her taut stomach to hold her in place. She gripped the tree trunk as hard as her womb gripped his cock. Saber shuddered, helplessly caught in the moment. The soft murmur of voices jerked him up. Jo froze. They stood listening, both panting and poised on orgasm. “I saw her come this way. She shouldn’t be alone. She doesn’t know what she’s doing.” The woman sounded as if she was on the verge of panic. Saber hesitated before continuing in an instinctive rhythm, but slower and more quietly. Jo relaxed, moving with him and stoking the need that burned both of them. Then he heard his brother Joe’s voice. “No, I bet they’ve gone for a walk down by the river.” With his superior eyesight, Saber caught Sly’s wicked grin as he diverted the dark-haired woman away from the copse of trees where Saber stood with Joanna. Silently he thanked his brothers. “Joe’s right,” Sly murmured. “The ground is very rough this way. They would have walked down the path.” “If you’re sure,” Maggie said. “My friend has acted very strangely this month. I’m worried about her.

She’s not herself.” A whispered curse from Joanna lifted Saber’s brows. A smile quirked his lips as the voices faded away in the opposite direction. “Make me come. Please make me come before they come back,” Jo pleaded. Saber set up a steady rhythm, each surge and retreat pulling him closer to release. He slipped a finger between her legs and stroked her clit. Jo bucked against him, shuddering violently. Her womb clenched hard, the tiny nubbin spasming beneath the slide of his finger. She gasped, her slim body tensing. Saber thrust deep. Hard. His breath loud to his own ears, his whole world focused on sensation and the way this woman felt in his arms, surrounding and milking his cock in her tight grip. Another thrust and semen exploded from him in a blaze of pleasure. He collapsed against her back, breathing hard, his cock still pulsing. The hovering feline retreated, appeased by his release with Jo. The darkening under his fingernails that indicated the imminent arrival of claws receded, and his skin and teeth appeared normal once again. Saber inhaled deeply, dragging in their combined scents and the fresh Middlemarch air. This was not going to be a one-time-only fling. He wanted more than a night with her. His jaw firmed in determination and he licked the fragrant skin behind her ear. All he had to do was persuade this woman to stay… Chapter Two
Saber pulled out of her, feeling instantly bereft. He tucked himself back in his trousers and tugged up his zipper. Producing a hanky from his pocket, he handed it to Jo. “Here. Use this.” “Thanks.” She glanced about them and sashayed over to a small leafy bush. She tugged a pair of red panties free from the leaves and surveyed them with a rueful smile. “Looks like I’m going without.” “I’ll buy you some more,” Saber said, pleased with her matter-of-fact acceptance. Most women of his acquaintance would have acted pissed and taken it out on his bank account. “But I’m going to enjoy knowing you’re bare beneath your dress.” Jo laughed. “I have a bra on.” “I dare you to take it off.” “What will you give me in return? Bare skin? Will I get to see your butt? Full frontal sex?” “Oh, yeah.” Saber gave a big, bad wolf smile. Shit, if he could have her again, he’d promise anything. “A tough assignment, but I’m man enough for the job.” A gurgle of laughter escaped. “You think?” “Yeah. Do you want to go back to the dance or would you like to go home with me for a few hours before the train leaves? A soft bed. Comfort. Great sex. What do you think?” Jo shrugged a red shoestring strap off one shoulder then repeated the move with the other. She flicked the closure of her red bra open, holding his gaze the whole time. The bra lifted away, revealing creamy

curves. Silently, she handed it to him, still warm from her body heat. “Yes.” “Yes, what?” Saber heard the hoarse note in his voice as his hand fisted around the lacy bra. He swallowed his apprehension, aware of how important it was to him that she stayed. He’d successfully fought the change, and he hoped his explosive release would prevent a reappearance of the problem. Jo hadn’t noticed a thing, so he was confident he could do it again—should the need arise. Oh, yeah. He definitely wanted her to stay. Jo laughed as she righted her dress. “I’d better tell Maggie where I’m going then I’m all yours. Oh, and I’ll need my shoes and bag.” ***** Emily glanced across at Saber, a trace of unease sitting awkwardly in her gut. Equal parts of worry and out-of-control excitement eddied through her. “Are you sure your brother will give Maggie the message?” Saber took one hand off the wheel and placed it on her knee, squeezing lightly in reassurance. “Felix is reliable. He’ll give her the message. Don’t worry.” A tension-filled silence fell between them. Emily stared straight through the SUV windscreen at the pitch-black surroundings. The headlights cut through the immediate darkness, lighting the road. But not one street lamp illuminated the way. It made her wonder if she was making a mistake driving off into the countryside with a relative stranger. Then she thought about the way Saber had made her feel earlier. Feminine. Desirable. Wanted. Not like Michael. She shifted her weight on the seat, her breasts peaking against the silky fabric of her dress. Each little move seemed to make the material drag against her sensitive nipples. She squeezed her eyes shut and allowed her mind to wander. Fantasize. She imagined him removing her dress, unzipping it and letting the red silk fall away from her body. Emily squirmed, almost panting with the need that spiraled through her veins. Once was not enough. She was desperate to make love with him again, and this time she’d insist on seeing him. She’d lick his lips and work her way down his body, torturing them both. She’d wrap her hands around his cock and feel the power of him beneath her fingers. Then taste. She’d rain kisses the length of his erection before taking him in her mouth and loving him. Emily licked her lips before risking a glance across at Saber. Nothing but his profile was discernable. Yes, she’d suck at his cock and tease him until he climaxed in her mouth. She’d swallow his cum. Emily gave a muffled groan. She felt rather than saw Saber glance at her. Heat stained her cheeks at the thought of the intimate act she’d imagined. Soon she’d make it a reality, and she didn’t think Saber would refuse her overtures. The heat filtered down her body, tugging at her breasts before collecting deep in her womb. The SUV slowed, and Saber turned up a driveway. They jolted through potholes, the gravel crunching beneath the tires. Saber passed one house without slowing and pulled up outside a second, larger, rambling home. He yanked on the handbrake and switched off the ignition, hesitating before opening his

door and jumping out. Emily climbed out too, fighting an unwanted attack of nerves. He extended his hand. “Having second thoughts?” “No.” Emily placed her hand in his, letting their fingers lace together. A single night of pleasure before she returned home to Dunedin and attempted to rebuild her life, her sense of self-esteem. God knows, after Michael’s betrayal, there was room for improvement. In hindsight she recognized her weaknesses, the way she’d let him use her and control her every move, how she’d done everything he’d wanted her to without question. Emily shook from her troubled thoughts and looked Saber straight in the eye. “No second thoughts.” “Good.” Saber led her up a narrow concrete path to the front door of the single level stone building. She caught the scent of lavender before he opened the door and stood back to let her enter. “Don’t you lock your door?” “This is the country,” Saber said, closing the door. “That’s why I knew it was safe to leave your shoes and bag until we went back for them.” He flicked on the light and led her down a long, carpeted passage. “I promised you a bed this time.” “So you did.” Emily strolled into the large, masculine room that was dominated by a king-sized bed. A farming magazine lay on a bedside cabinet along with a pile of change. A painting of the Southern Alps in the summer hung on the wall while a trio of paintings of lakes and snow-capped mountains adorned another. Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, she decided. He walked up behind her noiselessly, his arms curling around her waist before she’d realized he’d moved. “You’re very tidy,” she said to cover her embarrassing squeak. “A woman comes in to do the cleaning twice a week. I’ve been thinking about you naked in my bed for the entire drive out here.” The hoarse note in his voice told her it was the truth. It gave her the confidence to admit to her thoughts. “I’ve been fantasizing, too.” “Yeah?” Emily turned in his arms and grinned up at him. “Why don’t I show you?” She drew his head down and flicked her tongue across the seam of his lips in a move of pure provocation. He gathered her closer and kissed her, deepening the contact and taking over. Emily opened her mouth ready to protest, but he stilled her with the slow slide of his tongue into her mouth. His hands dropped to knead her bottom while he explored her mouth with increasingly urgent hunger. Emily forgot about arguing about control and went with the flow. The warmth of his hands seeped through the thin silk of her dress. Her sex felt moist and aching. Emily moaned, hungry for the pleasure she knew awaited her. Finally, needing to breathe, she pulled away and rested her forehead against his. Emily ran a lazy hand through his thick, dark hair. “Can I undress you? With the light on.” His green eyes widened slightly. He hesitated before giving her an abrupt nod. “Don’t tease me too much. I don’t think my poor body can take it.” “Oh, I promise not to push too hard,” Emily whispered, pulling away to study him. Although he appeared in control, his erection tented his black trousers and his chest rose and fell noticeably. “I’ll tease

you until the exact moment before it becomes too much.” “That’s what I’m afraid of,” he muttered. “Have at it. Where do you want me?” “The possibilities are endless.” Emily grinned, enjoying the verbal teasing. Sex with Michael had been furtive gropings on her parents’ front porch, and when they were married, they’d made love in the bedroom with the lights off. Quick. Painful. Boring. There was so much she wanted to try. She’d known there had to be more to making love than Michael had shown her. The memory of her release with Saber brought a shudder. Now she knew. Emily was positive there was more to come.Oops. Unfortunate choice of words. Her lips quirked in sudden amusement.Come. Yep, she fully intended to do that. “Like to share the joke?” “Um, no. Let me see. I think I’d like you to strip for my viewing pleasure.” Saber gaped but recovered quickly. “I can’t strip without music.” “No problem. I’ll provide the music. I’ll sing,” Emily said, neatly sidestepping his objection. She started to sing the first song that came to mind—something about believing in miracles. Tanned fingers yanked at the red tie and sent it flying through the air. It landed on top of a bedside lamp. He practically ripped off the pearl buttons on the white shirt as he tugged them free of buttonholes. Emily’s singing faltered when the cotton shirt parted to reveal his chest. He stood there, devilishly handsome and disheveled, driving her to distraction. His chest rose and fell with each breath. The soft clearing of a throat made her remember she was the backing band. She hurriedly recommenced her singing, this time about a big spender. Her singing was soft and flirtatious, designed to tease and taunt. A wave of heat suffused her body while Saber waggled his lower body and did a rather indecent hip grind before he calmly shrugged off his shirt and let it drop to the floor. She wouldn’t have been a card-carrying adult female if she didn’t scrutinize his waggling, sexy butt with close attention to detail, so she moved to a better vantage point. Ooh, decadent.Nice. Bring it on. Emily devoured him with her gaze, her breathing hitching, resisting the urge to fan her face. Lord, the man was fine. Heat converged in her cheeks, only to deepen when he pumped his pelvis like an agile rock star. Thrust. Bump. Grind. Her eyes remained glued to the strip show, in particular to his flexible hips and developing groin area. Oh, no, she didn’t want to miss a thing. Working in the great outdoors had developed his muscles, giving him a strong, toned appearance that beat gym-made muscles any day. Her gaze darted up to his face. To her chagrin, he appeared calm and cool while inside she was a mass of nerves and desire. Desperate, reckless hunger. Oops! Sing, Emily. Sing.“Hey, big spender!” His hands went to the fastening on his trousers. His hips shimmied, drawing her attention to the bulge. Ooh, yeah! The erection especially made for her viewing and touching pleasure.Very nice. Her singing faltered again and died as she watched him peel his black trousers away from his engorged cock. It sprang free, pointing in her general direction. Emily’s tongue darted out to moisten dry lips. Their gazes met. Held. A message passed between them, one of promises and passion. Saber stopped undressing and prowled across the bedroom, closing the gap between them, his trousers riding low on his hips. A kiss. She needed his touch so badly. Emily raised her head, her soft sound of need drawing a gentle smile from him. “Lady, I like the way you think.”

“You can’t read my mind,” Emily whispered. “Can’t I?” Saber cupped her head with his hands and lightly massaged, the pads of his fingers pressing into her scalp with just enough pressure that Emily wanted to groan her pleasure. His clever fingers continued to slide through her hair in small circles. He stared deeply into her eyes, a tiny smile playing on his lips. Emily’s heart thumped, awareness sending delicious shivers rippling the length of her aroused body. Weighted, her eyelids drifted closed on a soft sigh. Emily pursed her lips, absolutely aching for his lips on hers. Her chin lifted a fraction with another soft sigh escaping. She felt a delicate brush of lips at her temple, followed by a butterfly kiss on each of her eyelids. “You’re so beautiful,” Saber said in a hushed voice. His warm breath wafted across Emily’s cheek as he smoothed her hair away from her face. Emily ached so much for his kiss, she was ready to beg, but she had to admit his delaying tactics were making her hotter than she’d ever felt before. Her whole body blushed, the heat of arousal making her squeeze her thighs together. Of course, it would feel better with Saber’s hand, mouth or cock caressing her pussy as she squeezed, but the anticipation was something else, making her juices flow and her heart flutter anxiously. Saber feathered a string of kisses down her face and along her jaw. He nibbled at the corner of her mouth. Emily gasped and parted her lips, a wave of excitement pulling her breasts painfully tight. They rubbed against the bodice of her dress with each shallow breath, becoming even more sensitive and achy. Instead of taking advantage of her open mouth, Saber licked along her lips, both top and bottom from corner to corner, and then nibbled at her lower lip. Emily gasped again, and this time Saber pushed his tongue inside, teasing her tongue with his. To her surprise, he inserted his finger along with his tongue. Emily’s heart skipped a beat. It felt so intimate, building the persistent ache between her legs to new heights. She tingled, both inside and out and shifted her weight from foot to foot. The kiss ended, and he withdrew his finger to trace the curvature of her lips. “I like to kiss you.” Saber was completely serious, but an inner glow in his green eyes told her she wasn’t the only one suffering from the restraints he’d placed on them. “Let me kiss you,” Emily said, wanting to return some of the pleasure that fizzled through her veins like molten syrup. “Don’t do anything. Let me do all the work.” Without waiting for his answer, she cupped his head with her hands, tugging him to a comfortable position. While she wouldn’t get marks for originality, because she copied everything he’d done that felt good, she was positive her report would glow. Emily nibbled his bottom lip before pushing her tongue slowly into his mouth, tasting the faint mint on his breath, sliding her fingers through his short black hair and across his jaw. The faint burn of stubble beneath her fingers excited her. Emily kissed him slowly and wetly, imagining his stubble burning the tender skin of her inner thighs. She’d enjoyed the finger thing so she pinched that little move, too. She moved slowly, experimenting with technique. Hard. Slow. Soft. Fast. Really taking the time to get to know what he liked. Driving herself crazy, ratcheting up the coil of tension inside until she thought she’d come just from kissing his beautiful mouth. Finally, Saber pulled away, his magnificent chest rising and falling rapidly enough to make her feel confident in her lovemaking—her kissing skills at least. “I can’t take any more. I need to touch you, your breasts. I want to taste you.” “Yes,” she breathed. They were on the same page and using the same bookmark.

He turned her around and tugged at the zipper of her dress. After a quick shrug of her shoulders, the straps slipped down her arms. The dress slid down to her waist, caught briefly on her hips before descending to the floor with a swish of silk. “Very nice,” Saber murmured from behind her. “You haven’t seen my front yet. It’s very sexy,” Emily purred. Okay, she had no idea where that came from. Michael had called her an ugly cow during their last shouting match. But Saber made her feel sexy. Confident. Desirable. And very wet. “It would have to be pretty good to beat the rear-end, kitten.” His calloused hands palmed her butt cheeks while he nuzzled at her neck. His tongue was rough, yet it sent pinpricks of pleasurable sensation racing from the pulse point he licked. He rubbed his chest against her back, reminding her of an affectionate cat, then without warning, he scooped her off her feet and tossed her onto the middle of the mattress. She bounced once while he ripped off his trousers. The man was beautiful—a broad chest with a light dusting of hair that arrowed downward toward his groin. And his cock—long and proud. Before she could take her visual exploration any further, he caged her body with his arms and legs. Saber grinned down at her, looking very pleased with himself. “You stopped singing so I figured you’d finished. I won,” he added. “It wasn’t a contest,” Emily protested. “No, kitten? Between male and female it’s always a contest.” Saber glanced down at her breasts and his eyes darkened. He dipped his head and licked one breast from base to very tip. The rough sensation of his tongue brought a shudder of delight. Her nipple contracted as they both watched. Saber grinned. “Jo, you’re right. I could get to like your breasts very much.” “There’s more to me than tits and ass,” Emily muttered. “I’ve got brains, too.” She surprised a laugh out of him. “Ah, kitten, that goes without saying.” He leaned closer and blew on her nipple, watching the pink tip contract even more. “You’re so pretty. Delicious. Makes a man want to bite.” “Only if I get to bite back. I’d like to see you wearing a mark I made.” Shit, that sounded possessive. What was she thinking? She lowered her lashes a fraction before glancing to see how he took her statement. A broad grin stretched from ear to ear. Emily shrugged inwardly. So maybe her gut instinct wasn’t that bad. Saber leaned over her to flick the light switch off. Darkness filled the room before her eyes adjusted enough to make out dim shapes of furniture and his profile. “I wanted the light on.” “We’ve seen each other for long enough to fill in the dots,” he drawled. “If people see the lights, we might get unwelcome interruptions. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to savor our second time in privacy.” God, the man knew exactly the right thing to say to soothe her fears before she even knew she had them. She didn’t want this night to be anything like what she’d had with Michael, but then how could it be with Saber’s sexy whisper rumbling in her ear?

Saber lay down on the bed, pinning her in place with his chest. The tickling friction of his chest hair against her sensitive breasts had her drawing a sharp breath. The man had only to touch her and her pulse spiraled out of control. He lowered his head and his lips closed over hers with clear intention this time. No teasing or stoking of passion. This was the kiss of a man intent on taking things to culmination. Firm. Masterful. No sloppy, wet-fish sensation. She reveled in his touch, his sweet breath and the sensation of skin on skin. He nibbled and sucked at her bottom lip, his tongue soothing each nip. Funny, but she didn’t remember Michael’s tongue feeling quite as abrasive. The rough tongue slid between her parted lips, stroking her inner cheek at the same time his fingers tugged her pubic hair. Emily gasped at the jolt of sensation. Her legs parted in silent invitation. He pulled away, and she sensed his stare. “You want me to touch you?” he asked, his hand stilling. “Of course I do,” Emily whispered. “Tell me what you want. You said you fantasized.” “Well, if you want a map. I’d like you to kiss me some more, and it makes me hot when my breasts are suckled.” “How hot?” Interest shaded his tone, and she wished she could see his face a little more clearly. “Hot enough that all you’ll need to do is touch my clit and I’ll come—I think.” “So this is theory?” “Fantasy is the operative word,” Emily snapped back before she could censor her words. But it was the truth. This whole night was one big fantasy. The analogy to Cinderella wasn’t a bad one, except that Cindy had won her man. Emily planned on one perfect night. That was all, since the scars were too new, too raw, for anything else. “I can make your fantasy a reality,” he said, confidence shading his words. “In fact, it will be my pleasure.” He ran his hand the length of her body with a firm stroke. Emily’s pulse rate zapped off the scale, edging up to crazy. She brushed a kiss across his breastbone, tasting the saltiness of his skin as she replayed his words. Not one word about his pleasure and what she needed to do to make him climax. This was a dream. And she intended to squeeze every drop of pleasure from the experience. One night. “How long until the train leaves?” she murmured. “Another three hours. Don’t worry. I’ll get you home.” He cupped one breast with his hand and squeezed the plump globe before lifting it to his mouth. Warmth suffused her breast. Saber ran his tongue across her taut nipple before beginning a gentle suction. Emily felt it between her legs. Sensual tension ripped through her body as he continued to suckle. God, it felt better than she’d imagined. Michael… No, she’d forget Michael and quit the comparisons. Michael was dead. He suckled even harder, introducing a hint of teeth. Emily’s whole body jolted. “Feels good,” she half-panted.

Saber pulled away to whisper, “It will get even better. Close your eyes and concentrate on every sensation.” It wasn’t difficult to follow his instructions since her eyelids were heavy and she’d had to fight to keep them open. The darkness heightened her senses. She heard every move he made—the rustle of the crisp cotton duvet cover beneath them, his soft breathing and the faint noise he made as he suckled at her breast. Her pussy clenched, protesting the emptiness, needing his cock to clamp down on. To fill her. She inhaled deeply, dragging in his masculine scent and the fragrance of the outdoors—of pine and green grasses. He let her nipple pop from his mouth and scraped his teeth across the underside of her breast. His teeth were surprisingly sharp, but the lap of his tongue soothed the sliver of pain. The mattress dipped when he shifted his weight, and she held her breath in acute anticipation. When she felt his touch again, it was a moist lick just above her pubic bone and the silky curls that guarded her sex. “Part your legs for me,” he whispered. Emily followed his instructions without embarrassment, knowing that with the light off he could only feel and not see. Cool air washed across her swollen flesh. She felt decadent. Wanton. Sexy. Her heart thumped so fast she hoped she wouldn’t expire from a heart attack. Emily felt his hands on her thighs and the mattress dipped a fraction when he shifted. His hands gripped her thighs then she experienced the most arousing sensation of all. His rough tongue lapping the length of her cleft. Emily groaned out loud, and he chuckled. “Feels good,” she muttered, wanting to give him encouragement. If he stopped, she thought she might commit murder. To her intense relief, he lapped across her clit, the abrasive sensation making her gasp again. He licked down and into the mouth of her pussy. Oh, the man was talented. His tongue seemed to curl and wind into a circle. It darted into her and licked at the juices that seeped from her aroused body. His lips moved against her flesh, and even though he no longer touched her clitoris, the tiny bud spasmed in an intense burst of pleasure. Emily gasped, lifting her hips to give him better access. His lips moved against the mouth of her pussy again while his tongue plunged deep, the rough surface teasing at her delicate inner walls. She’d never felt anything like it before. Emily heard a whimper—her whimper. Her hips jerked, and he licked along the wall of her pussy. Pleasure spiraled inside with each rasp of his tongue. One hand left her thigh to delicately circle her clit. “Saber,” Emily cried. The pleasure was intense, so powerful that it almost hurt. His finger rubbed her clit gently but insistently in time with the tiny flickers of his tongue. Emily trembled. Too much. It was too much. A protest formed on her lips as she hovered on the cusp of release. “Saber.” A soft rumble vibrated from him as if he spoke deep in his throat. He lapped at her again, touching the wall of her vagina. The touch pushed her over the edge. She shattered violently, the spasms never ending. So good. Saber rubbed his finger across her sensitized clit and a corresponding jolt ran through her body again. He pulled away and moved up her body. Their lips moved together in a gentle kiss. “How was that?” he murmured, a laugh in his voice. “I want more of the same.” Emily stroked her hand down his back, and he arched against her, a

rumbling purr coming from deep in his chest. She grinned, loving the sensual slide of her hand across his smooth skin and adoring his open pleasure in her touch. In a strange way, he reminded her of her neighbor’s cat—another male who enjoyed being touched and stroked. “Yeah, I definitely need more.” “That can be arranged.” Saber deepened the kiss, and she tasted herself on him. He pinched her nipple, and the sensation reverberated through Emily. A quick punch of heat whipped to her pussy. “Make love to me,” Emily whispered. For an instant, she thought he hadn’t heard her or that he didn’t want her in the same way. Or perhaps it was her choice of words? She’d scared him with her talk of love. But he drew her close and pressed a quick butterfly kiss to the tip of her nose before she’d fully completed the thought. He smiled an instant before he plunged his clever tongue deep into her mouth. Need unfurled again at the taste of him, the slide of his lips over hers. His green eyes glowed in the dim light. Strange eyes. Magnetic. Emily stared up at his eyes, feeling as though she was drifting in a sensual cocoon. Saber. His dark pupils were surrounded by a soft leaf green. So pretty. Very sexy. Saber shifted a fraction, positioning his cock and taking her mind off his mesmerizing eyes. He pushed home until he was buried in her womb. She felt a subtle throb, deep inside, and laced her hands in his hair, urging him on, enjoying the sense of fullness. He seemed bigger than earlier, his girth filling her to stretching point, but perhaps it was the change in position. Saber kissed her again, sucking on her tongue. A surge of wetness eased his way as he thrust with long, even strokes. Saber plundered her mouth, her body. Raw need fueled each thrust. Each gasp. The need spiraled upward, building into something else, something magical and amazing that she wanted above all else. She strained toward the magic. A prickling sensation swelled, sparks shooting through her each time Saber thrust. He shifted the angle a fraction, and the next thrust pushed her over the edge. She clung to his broad shoulders and rode out the storm that suffused her body while Saber quickened his thrusts. Short. Fast. Emily gripped his upper arms and felt him come. His groan was low and heartfelt and brought satisfaction for Emily. She was capable of giving pleasure, of turning a man on. The knowledge made her smirk because she had other things to try. Saber pulled her into a tight embrace despite the heat of their bodies. He brushed a kiss across her lips before pulling away to yawn. “Thank you, kitten. You’ve worn me out.” He murmured something else after that but Emily let it go. She thought he’d muttered something about shifting. She didn’t intend to move an inch. “That was amazing,” he added with another deep, rumbling purr. “That’s a relief. I thought the yawn meant boredom.” He gave a sleepy chuckle. “Not a chance, kitten.” A yawn forced its way out of Emily. Her eyes slid closed. She’d shut her eyes for a few minutes and enjoy the cuddle. Just for a moment… Chapter Three
The glint of the early morning sun shining through the wooden blinds woke him. Saber didn’t move but his eyes flicked open. Morning, and his kitten was still in his bed. In his arms. Contentment swelled within him. His arms tightened, and she stirred with a sexy moan that brought a surge of blood to his groin. Lazy, early morning sex. Saber grinned. His favorite kind—next to making love in the middle of the day

and during the night. Saber stared at her, memorizing every freckle on her pale face. Her mascara had run, giving her raccoon eyes, but she still pushed every button of his libido. Her lips were swollen and red and her neck bore bruises from where he’d nipped her. Saber couldn’t feel guilty about the faint purple bruising her when his feline genes roared approval. He leaned over to taste her lips again, fighting the need to take things further and complete the enzyme exchange. To openly claim her as his mate and keep her as his woman. Her eyes flickered open and her mouth moved seductively beneath his, a lazy move that fueled his desire. She melted into him, her body pliant and willing. “Morning,” he said when their lips parted. Joanna bolted upright with a shocked gasp. “I’ve missed the train.” Saber bent his head to take her nipple in his mouth. He drew gently, watching her face the whole time. When her eyes drifted shut, relief suffused him. It would be all right. He’d talk her in to staying with him for a while. A soft sigh escaped her parted lips as he nuzzled her breast. Grinning, he rolled over onto his back, tugging her with him so she ended up sitting astride him. His hand grazed her hip, enjoying the silky skin along with the view. The more he had her, the more control he seemed to have over his wayward feline genes. After that first time, the cat had seemed content to bask and purr with the pleasure, enjoying the intimacy of being with his mate instead of fighting to shift. “Why don’t you stay a while?” he said, keeping his tone casual. But his heart thumped strongly while he waited for her reply. Saber had no idea what he’d do if she refused to stay. “Stay? But—” “Never say you’re into one-night stands,” Saber said deadpan. A bit hypocritical considering he was a single male who’d had his fair share. “No…but I don’t want anything serious either.” A trace of panic flickered across her face and she tried to scramble off his body. Saber held her in place. “There’s another train this afternoon. Or I can drive you back to Dunedin.” “The train’s fine,” Joanna said hurriedly. Not exactly flattering, but at least the tenseness left her shoulders and legs. “But I’d better ring my friend or else she’ll worry. If she’s still talking to me.” Saber relaxed. “Good. That will mean we can spend more time together.” He reached up to kiss her, at the same time wondering how he would persuade her to stay longer. The week or better still, never go back to the city. She didn’t want a serious relationship. Could mean anything. Either she wasn’t over her husband or he’d hurt her badly. Damn, he’d have to give her time. The kiss slipped from casual and friendly to persuasive and hungry. Saber abruptly changed his mind about letting her set the pace on top. He wanted to pound into her until they both exploded. Saber tore his mouth away before flipping her over and covering her with his body. “We have time for a quickie before you make that phone call?” A blush swept into her cheeks as she stared at him. She swallowed and whispered, “Yes.”

One simple word that gave him hope. Somehow, he’d talk her into staying in Middlemarch. She reached between them to wrap her hand around the swollen hardness of his arousal. Firmly enough that he gritted his teeth against the frisson of pleasure. The quickie had been a figure of speech. He intended to make this last. Saber explored her mouth, languid and lazy as if he had all the time in the world. Her hum of appreciation echoed in the slow pump she gave his cock. “You do that so well,” he murmured, taking a deep and unsteady breath. The woman was gonna kill him. The roar of arousal drew his balls tight. “Stop. I want to come inside you.” Joanna’s laugh held a smoky quality. “What are you waiting for? I’m ready for you.” Saber shifted and trailed his finger through the moist flesh between her legs. She was wet and slick—more than ready. Saber’s arousal kicked up another notch as he slid between her legs and into her pussy. He grasped her hips tightly, lifting her for his thrust. One finger slid between the cheeks of her ass and strummed across her puckered rosette. When she purred with approval, he eased the tip of his finger inside. “Saber,” she whimpered, her womb squeezing his cock so tightly he knew this was going to be over more quickly than he’d like. “Easy,” he murmured, but she came so rapidly that his hips jerked and he exploded, his climax breaking over him in a storm of sensation. Saber removed his finger and rolled so she sprawled on top of him. The spicy tang of their lovemaking filled the air. The bed covers had long since fallen to the floor. Replete and relaxed for the first time in months, Saber knew he had to keep her permanently. She seemed so adamant about leaving. Then there was the inevitable confession about the people of Middlemarch. It took a special woman to commit to a shifter. He sighed. So many obstacles. He heard a door open and shut down at the other end of the house. At least some of his brothers were home. The click of claws on the wooden floor sent alarm skidding down his spine. He tensed. The truth might come out sooner than he liked.
Emily sighed against his chest. “I should ring Maggie. She’s probably frantic.” The thought of speaking with Maggie rubbed away some of the gloss. They would argue—she sensed it. Maggie would probably sulk and ignore her for weeks. Yeah, she should ring right now and get it over with. But she didn’t want to move. Saber warmed her through. A generous lover, he tempted her to commit the ultimate folly. A bit silly of her, considering her experience with Michael. A sliver of fear worked through her at the thought. To trust again. To lay her heart down and become vulnerable. “She’ll know you’re with me.” And she was probably having a cow because Emily wasn’t acting the grieving widow. Not for the first time, Emily wondered if she’d made a mistake in trying to protect the family from Michael’s shortcomings. They had given him saint status, and already Maggie was questioning her right to date again or go out for a night of fun after only six months of being a widow. Emily grimaced. “She’s probably guessed since we both disappeared.”

The seductive idea of staying formed in her mind. A week or two in the fresh country air.No , she thought.Treasure this one perfect night. Nothing stays the same. Save the heartache. Go home and start over. The bedroom door creaked. When Emily turned her head, a huge black cat pushed the door open and prowled into the bedroom. Emily froze, her mouth dropping open in shock. The cat halted just inside the door. “Out,” Saber snapped. The cat mewed, sat on its haunches and fixed them with a haughty stare. The door flew open again and another cat stalked into the bedroom to sit beside the first. Saber reached out and snagged the sheet off the floor. He covered her naked limbs before turning his attention to the cats. “Out.” “Um, big kitties,” Emily said in understatement. Her voice trembled more than she liked. There really were panthers? Hurried footsteps sounded outside the bedroom and one of Saber’s brothers burst into the bedroom. “Anyone else waiting out there to come in?” Saber demanded with a note of impatience. “The local cop car is heading up the driveway,” Joe said. At his words, the two black cats raced from the room. Strange. It was almost as if they had understood. In the distance, she heard the peal of the doorbell. A hand seized Joe by the scruff of the neck and hauled him out of the room. Felix stuck his head into the bedroom. Emily tugged the sheet up to her chin, very aware of her nakedness beneath the sheet and Saber’s erection pressing against her leg. “I’ll deal with Allan.” A brief smirk tugged at Felix’s lips before he disappeared, pulling the door shut. “Sorry about that,” Saber murmured. “They’re used to walking in whenever. I don’t usually…” It made her feel good to know he didn’t have a procession of women in and out of his bedroom. Special. “Um, about the cats—” “I’m not leaving until I see with my own eyes,” a furious voice shouted. “Oh, damn.” Emily frantically sought a place to hide. Wardrobe. No time. Damn. Under the bed. Emily half-slipped out of the bed before she realized that drawers filled the gap between the mattress and the floor. Footsteps thumped closer. Just as the door opened, she tugged the sheet Saber had retrieved from the floor over her head and shut her eyes. Maybe Maggie would go away? “What have you done with my friend? Where is she?” Maggie demanded. “I haven’t done anything with her.” Saber’s voice held a hint of amused arrogance. That wasn’t true, Emily thought, chewing on her bottom lip. Each time she moved, she felt the pull of

well-used muscles. And his erection pressing against her had woken her libido so much that she wanted him again. Her pulse hummed in sexual awareness. But he’d done more than make love to her. He’d changed the way she thought about herself. The words Michael had screamed at her weren’t true. She was capable of attracting a man. A smug grin curved her lips when his cock twitched. And keeping his attention. “She’s in that bed with you, isn’t she?” Maggie snapped. “I’m not stupid. I can see there are two bodies in that bed.” “I love an intelligent woman,” one of Saber’s brothers said. “Me too,” another agreed. “A brain is a sexy thing. I think I might be falling in love,” he added in a dramatic tone. “Oh, shut up!” Maggie snarled in a very Michael-like growl. Emily trembled, knowing in her gut that her friend was going to hate her when she found out. Maybe she’d just go away? Please let her go away. The sheet was yanked off the bed, leaving them both visible. Emily gasped in shock and tried to make herself small. Saber calmly replaced the sheet and tucked it around them. Sly walked up to Maggie, trying to divert her. “Why don’t we discuss this over coffee? Let Saber and Jo get dressed.” “I’ll be out in the kitchen,” the policeman said. “Doesn’t look like a crime scene to me.” Color surged to Emily’s cheeks and seeped down to her chest. One perfect night of passion. That’s all she’d wanted. But even that had gone awry, turning into a fiasco of gigantic and embarrassing proportions. It took two hands to count the number of people who had seen her naked this morning. She scrunched up, trying to make herself small. “I’m sorry I dragged you out here,” Maggie said in a stiff voice. Emily cringed at the dark glare her friend fired at her. “I can’t believe you’d treat Michael’s memory in this way. He’s barely cold in his grave. You’re just a…a slut!” “No, you don’t understand. Michael and I…” Emily trailed off when she saw Maggie had made up her mind. No matter what she said to excuse her actions, Maggie would think she’d lied and was besmirching Saint Michael’s memory. For all his selfishness, Michael had been a good brother to Maggie, giving his help and money when she’d needed it. Without any questions or recriminations either. It was no wonder Maggie had adored him and was upset with Emily’s wanton behavior. “Look at you. You’re sitting there naked in his arms with not a shred of shame.” “Your friend is here of her own free will,” the policeman said. “That’s all I need to know.” “So it would seem,” Maggie snapped. “That’s it. Everyone out,” Saber ordered. When Maggie turned to go, Emily leapt up and seized the sheet, dragging it off the bed and wrapping the cotton around her to cover her nakedness. “Listen to me, Maggie. Michael was leaving me on the morning he died. He was having an affair with his secretary.”

“That’s a lie.” Maggie’s mouth twisted in an ugly sneer. “You’re despicable saying that when he’s not here to defend himself.” “No,” Emily said, her voice hard. “It’s the truth.” “Michael wouldn’t do that. You’re lying. God, I never thought you’d stoop so low. I thought you were my friend.” With a sob, Maggie turned and ran out. The room emptied like magic, leaving Emily alone with Saber. She couldn’t look at him, didn’t want to see his expression. All this mess because she’d wanted a single night of fun. “You can use the shower first,” Saber said. “I’ll find some clothes for you to wear.” He gave her a comforting squeeze that brought tears to her eyes. She didn’t want his sympathy. “Don’t worry, kitten. This will blow over.” A single tear rolled down her cheek and she hurriedly turned away. Pitiful. Emily wanted to burrow into his comforting embrace and stay there for weeks, for months. But this was a fantasy. Reality was an empty home in Dunedin and her best friend angry with her. She knew Maggie. She held a mean grudge. Saber directed her into the en suite and flicked on the shower. Shock had whisked all color from her cheeks and she was trembling. Tears looked imminent. He leaned over to touch his lips to hers, lingering for a long moment when she responded. His mind leapt immediately to sex. Making love. But he shoved his urgent need away, knowing this wasn’t the time, not with her friend out there waiting. After tugging the sheet from her body, he pushed her gently under the warm water. Once he was sure she was okay, he strode back into the bedroom and pulled out a T-shirt and a pair of sweatpants. He left them on the bed, then yanked on a pair of jeans and went to face his brothers. Felix saw him first. “Bro.” He smirked. “Why didn’t you tell us you were bringing the luscious Jo home with you?” “Yeah, we wouldn’t have barged in on you,” Leo said. They couldn’t fool him with their innocence. They’d known he’d had a woman in there with him. They would have picked up the scent of a stranger as soon as they entered the house. Saber rounded the battered wooden table in the middle of the large kitchen and wandered over to the coffeepot. He grabbed two mugs from the cupboard above the coffeemaker and set them down on the bench with a clunk. “Where’s the friend? Gone with Allan?” Perhaps he’d make some toast. Jo might be hungry. He pictured her tight, pinched face. Maybe not, but he needed something to do. Making toast was better than bashing his brothers. “Allan left to round up some stray stock. Joe and Sly offered to give Maggie a lift to the train station. Knowing them, they’ll probably talk her into letting them drive her to Dunedin. They both seemed to like her.” Felix shook his head. “There’s a brawl in the making, if ever I saw one. They have the same taste in women. Feisty and fleshy.” Saber gave an abrupt nod. His youngest brothers did everything together. They’d sort themselves out, though personally, he thought Maggie had the personality of a viper. The twins would find that out once they saw past the initial attraction. His eyes narrowed on Felix. “What the hell were you thinking? I could have had anyone in there.” “We knew it was Jo.” Leo ducked past Saber to stand behind the table before he smirked. “Recognized

the flowers in the girly lotions and potions she smears over her skin. Same ones I smelled last night. And her pheromones. Very sexy. What’s she like?” “None of your damned business.” Saber took two steps before a soft chuckle jerked him from the red haze of fury. His brothers were jabbing at him on purpose, enjoying the situation. And when he thought about it, from their point of view, his hooking up with Jo probably was a bit like payback for all the stern lectures he’d delivered last week. He forced the edginess away and went back to the coffee pot. He filled both cups and picked one up to take a sip. The black coffee rush soothed his ruffled fur and eased the tension in his shoulders. “If you’re going to keep her, the truth has to come out at some stage. You can’t live a lie.” Felix took a sip of his coffee but kept watching him as though he was an interesting bug. “I’m going to ask her to stay, but I’m not going to spring the truth. Not unless she asks questions.” Felix’s brows rose. “Do you think that’s wise?” “I’ve no idea.” Saber felt a moment’s panic before he replied. “I wasn’t expecting to find a mate.” “You should hold onto her,” Leo said, his cheeky grin absent for once. “Keep her here no matter what it takes. Make her believe that staying here in Middlemarch with you is the only alternative.” Footsteps in the passage silenced them, and Saber took the opportunity to skew the conversation away from him. “What did you and Leo get up to? Meet anyone?” Leo snorted. “Nice try. We were talking about you and the luscious Joanna.” “Morning, Joanna,” Felix said. Saber took in her appearance with possessive pride. His woman. His sweats dipped low on her hips. She’d turned up the legs so they were the right length for her while the worn T-shirt clung to her breasts. A sharp intake of breath reminded him his brothers were present. He turned to nail them with a warning glare. “Mine,” he snarled softly before he went to her and tugged her against his side. Saber touched her because he had to. His. Her pulse quickened beneath his fingers. Her body recognized they were right for each other even if she didn’t understand. “When does the train go? I need to go home.” Jo caught her bottom lip between her teeth. Her pale face called to him. Her eyes were red… “Your eyes are brown.” She shrugged, peering at him owlishly. “Contacts. The train? I have to explain to Maggie.” A tense silence enveloped the kitchen. Saber signaled his brothers with a jerk of his head. For once, they took the hint and faded from the room in total silence. “Perhaps you should give her time to cool down. Stay with me for a few days.” Joanna yanked from his touch. “Why?” Saber wanted to curse. This wasn’t going well. His vision of cozy families and steamy sex was a hundred

miles away from this scenario. “We’re good together.” “In bed. It’s not as though we made promises of forever. It was about animal lust. Scratching an itch. Sex, dammit. That’s all.” Saber stared, speechless, his gut churning as he absorbed each verbal blow. “Maybe it is just sex,” he said finally. His mind railed at him, but he forced the words out knowing if he didn’t tread carefully, he’d lose her. She didn’t understand the connection between them. Not yet. “I’d really like you to spend a few days with me. We don’t need to have sex. We have plenty of spare bedrooms. You can take your pick.” “Why do you want me to stay if it’s not for sex?” Saber hated the suspicion he saw in her brown eyes. The vulnerability. Her husband had hurt her deeply. The fool. How the hell could he fight a ghost of the past? “We could be friends. A person can never have too many friends.” For a fleeting instant, he wished the shifters in his line hadn’t lost the power of subliminal suggestion. When he was a kitten, his mother had spun tales of their ancestors defeating their enemies with this extraordinary power. Saber concentrated hard on sending her a silent message despite knowing the decision had to come from Jo. He wanted her to stay so badly but didn’t have a clue of what to offer for incentive. They didn’t know each other well enough—that was the crux of the problem. Jo took a deep breath, her breasts rising and falling as the expression in her eyes turned hard and angry. “I might as well stay,” she muttered without warning. “Maggie will run blurting tales to her family.” She opened her mouth to say something else then closed it without speaking, a shimmer of pain reflecting in her eyes. “Great. There’s a spare bedroom right at the end of the passage. I’ll get Joyce, our home help, to make it ready for you.” “I’ll sleep with you,” Jo said with an irritable shrug of her shoulders. “I might as well since that’s what they’ll all be accusing me of. Among other things,” she added, her face set in a dark scowl. Saber nodded, trying to pull up relief. It was what he wanted so why didn’t he feel as though he’d won? Chapter Four
Emily tried to stuff her anger back into the tight spot inside her chest where it had come from, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the expression on Maggie’s face. The distaste. The disappointment. The hostility. The hate Maggie had glared at her because she thought Emily was despoiling Michael’s memory. Maggie thought she was a slut and a liar. And it hurt badly. “I need to check on the sheep and shift the yearling cattle to another paddock with more grass. Do you want to come along?” “Why not?” Emily said, unable to suppress the bitterness from her tone. “It’s not as if I have anything else to do.” She glanced down at the borrowed clothes. “Is there something I can wear on my feet?” “I’ll find some boots for you.”

Sudden trepidation hit Emily. What the heck was she doing agreeing to stay here? She needed to go back to Dunedin and talk to Maggie. “What am I saying? I can’t stay here. I have to go home to face this head-on instead of running away. Besides, I don’t have clothes with me.” Tears stung the back of her eyes and she blinked rapidly. She would not cry. Emily stared at her bare feet, her hands fisted at her sides. She imagined the expressions on her in-laws’ faces, the silent condemnation. Emily shuddered. She really didn’t want to go home either, but there was nowhere else to go. Emily scowled, immediately second-guessing her decision. Stay or go? Saber wasn’t ordering her to stay. He’d asked and she’d agreed. This was different from following Michael’s every decree. She’d only stay for a day or two. This was her choice. Free choice. Maggie… Shit, what a muddle. A wave of self-pity hit and her face crumpled. She swallowed, fighting the need to sob. All she’d really wanted was a man to hold her, to tell her she was beautiful. She’d wanted to get away from Michael’s taunts that echoed through her mind during each lonely night she spent on her own in their marriage bed. Emily hadn’t wanted to hurt anyone—her best friend and family. How could making love with Saber, something so beautiful, cause so many problems? “Don’t cry, kitten. It will be all right.” Saber’s arms came around her, holding her tight. “Maggie needs some time.” His kind words and consideration made the tears flow faster. She couldn’t remember the last time a man had held her like this, offering nothing but comfort. Emily relaxed against his broad chest and stopped worrying about the tears and what Saber might think. If he saw her at her worst and still wanted her to stay…well, she might begin to believe. Saber set her away from him and stroked a finger across one cheek. He smiled gently. “Come and sit at the table. Drink your coffee while I hunt up a coat for you to wear, some socks and a pair of boots.” His gaze lingered on her lips before he smiled. “You won’t need many clothes during your stay here.” Emily gaped. He propelled her across the tiled floor. She found herself sitting at the table with a mug of steaming coffee in front of her. Saber disappeared silently, leaving her alone and in shock. No clothes required . Sensual awareness shot to her core. A few words and he’d reduced her to a quivering mass of need. How did he do that when she was at such an emotional low? In desperate need of distraction, she studied her surroundings. The kitchen was spotlessly clean, probably the doing of the home help Saber had mentioned, but it also bore signs of its masculine occupants. A leather wallet and a pair of sunglasses sat on the table. A stack of unopened mail sat on the counter along with more farming magazines. Saber’s brothers must have eaten already since there were dirty dishes stacked near the sink. On the heels of this thought came another. Those cats she’d seen in the bedroom this morning…where were they now? Emily glanced over her shoulder and ducked her head to check underneath the wooden table, just in case she’d missed seeing their pets. Nothing lurked beneath. Thank goodness. They’d looked huge. Suddenly she wanted Saber to hurry back. She didn’t particularly like cats. Emily was more of a dog person or she would have been if Michael had let her have a pet. Saber reappeared as silently as he’d left. “Socks and a jacket. I found a pair of boots for you. They might be a bit big but they’ll do for now. We can buy you a few things in town if necessary.” “Thanks.” The gleam in his eyes made her very aware of her body, her sexual needs. Exactly the things that had landed her squarely in the middle of this mess in the first place. “I’m going to get a dog,” Emily said, in a bad attempt to change the focus of her thoughts. Concentrating on the row of potted herbs that

sat on the sunny windowsill didn’t help her much either. Saber’s dark brows rose. “Really. What brought on this momentous decision?” “Michael didn’t like dogs. He said he was allergic to them. How many dogs do you have here on the farm?” “We don’t have dogs. Would you like toast?” Saber opened the refrigerator and pulled out a bag of sliced bread. He removed two pieces and popped them into the toaster. “What happened to the cats that were inside before? They looked big.” Saber paused before continuing across the kitchen. He tugged open a cupboard and picked up two plates before turning back to her. “The cats are native to the area. The two you saw were raised by hand. They’re safe enough, but you shouldn’t approach them if I’m not with you.” Saber dropped onto the chair opposite her. “Promise me.” His eyes were strangely intent as if her safety was really important to him. “They’re wary of strangers. No telling how they’ll react.” “I promise,” Emily said, giving him a watery smile. “I’m not a big cat person.” She caught Saber’s scowl before the toaster popped up the toast and wondered at it. “Are these the cats that the reporter wants to write a story about?” “Yes.” Another thought occurred. “Is that why you want to keep me here? To make sure I don’t talk?” “No.” Saber slapped the toast on a plate hard enough that one slice bounced off and hit the floor. He turned a glare on her. “I wanted to spend time with you. No other reason.” That’s what he says now.Michael had said the same thing at the beginning, before he’d become so domineering and indifferent to her feelings. Emily swallowed audibly. Trust was such a difficult thing. Fragile. And even more difficult for her after Michael had trampled over everything they’d had together. She’d lived a lie and hadn’t even known! It was going to be difficult, maybe impossible, to trust another man. She’d always wonder. Worry…
Saber took one look at the pain in her eyes and knew he had to react quickly. “Maybe toast wasn’t such a good idea. Let’s go.” He seized her hand and dragged her from the room, refusing to let go despite her furtive tugging. Saber led her out the back way and handed her a pair of boots. “I know they’ll be too big. We’ll stuff the toes with newspaper.” He didn’t give Jo the opportunity to speak, hustling her to his vehicle and helping her into the passenger seat as soon as the boots were on her feet. His brothers were going to get an earful the next time he saw them. He climbed in behind the wheel. Jo didn’t like cats. He slid a cautious glance across at her. What woman didn’t like cute kitty cats? An uneasy silence filled the vehicle as he drove down the dusty gravel track. Great. The woman was his mate—he sensed it with every fiber of his body—yet they were like strangers. She didn’t like cats for crying out loud. That should make for a strong relationship. He couldn’t seem to get past the fact. They were so compatible in bed. Physically.

“Is this your land?” “Yes, both sides of the road. This is our first stop.” Saber pulled up on a grass verge and climbed out, taking pride in showing her the prosperous acres he and his brothers toiled over in all seasons. In the distance, the Taieri River curled through the wide Strath Taieri valley, flanked by the Rock and Pillar Range on one side and the Taieri Ridge on the other. A flicker of black seen from the corner of his eye brought a curse. His brothers were playing chase in and out of the rocky schist outcrops up on the hill. Bloody hell, he didn’t believe it. This day just kept getting worse. He took a deep breath. Maybe Jo wouldn’t see them. Or perhaps… Saber rounded the front of the car with a purposeful stride, intending to hustle Jo out of sight. A shallow stream gurgled as it trickled over rocks and small pebbles, heading down the hill and under small bridges to join the river running through the valley below. The thunder of feet running through crackly poplar leaves sounded like an approaching storm. Damn, his brothers had covered the distance between them quicker than he’d figured they would. He opened the door for Jo. “I thought you said those cats were shy of strangers.” Jo stared at the three cats racing toward them. “It is the cats, right?” She squinted a fraction, a tiny frown forming on her forehead. Saber wanted to smooth it away. “Just ignore them and they’ll go away.” They’d better. Saber shut the passenger door and stepped up close to Jo. He lowered his head and stole a kiss, marking her with his scent at the same time. Her lips were warm and tasted sweet with a hint of the coffee she’d drunk earlier. It was like coming home. Familiar. Right. He took the kiss deeper, feasting on her mouth. When she gasped, he took advantage, sliding his tongue inside, exploring the softness of her inner cheek and the contrasting hardness of her teeth. Arousal roared through him. His cock stirred. Damn, he wanted her again even though they’d made love several times during the night. A deep, rough cough sounded behind him. A short growl followed in a higher register. Saber pulled away from Jo, breathing hard. “Um, Saber,” Jo said, her eyes big and wide. “I know I don’t have my glasses but they’re so close I can see their whiskers.” She frowned and rubbed her eyes before looking again. “There are three of them.” Since the twins had taken Jo’s friend to Dunedin, that left Leo and Felix. The third would be their neighbor and friend Saul. Probably come to check out Jo. Saber turned slowly and narrowed his eyes on his two brothers. They wore smirks, their green eyes alight with feline humor. “You’re right. There are three.” Leo coughed then stalked closer. Saber moved Jo behind him, not moving his gaze off his brother. “That’s close enough,” he snarled. Leo sat on his haunches, and Felix ambled forward to sit beside his brother, his tail lashing slowly from side to side. “Jo, the cats haven’t hurt anyone as far as I know, but remember what I said earlier about not getting too close to them unless I’m with you. I don’t know what’s up with them today. Usually we don’t see them for months on end.” He took her hand and led her past the cats, hoping she didn’t have too many questions. Her eyes were so wide it was lucky she wasn’t wearing her contacts. They would have dropped out. Saber kept walking without looking back until the crackle of dried leaves underfoot told

him his brothers and their friend were following. “I am going to find them a mate each if it’s the last thing I do.” “What?” “Nothing,” Saber muttered. “Ooh!” Jo squeaked. “It licked my hand.” Saber fumed inwardly and whirled to narrow his gaze on his brothers. Enough was enough. Despite his liking for Jo, she was still a relative stranger. None of them could be sure how she’d react to the truth about the Mitchell clan and the other shifters who secretly lived among the humans of Middlemarch. They needed time so they could all adjust and learn to trust. As he watched, Felix nudged her leg gently with his head and not to be outdone, Leo licked her hand again. Saul stayed aloof, a feline smirk hinting at his amusement and the smart-ass comments to come. A smile of delight flickered across Jo’s face. She reached out and stroked a tentative hand over Felix’s shoulder. Felix let rip with a loud purr. Jealousy surged through Saber. His woman. “Enough,” he roared, tapping Felix smartly on the flanks. “Go. Away. Now.” He seized Jo’s hand and tugged her down a dirt track to a wooden gate. His brothers, luckily for them, stayed put. “I didn’t think you liked cats,” he snapped. “I’ve changed my mind. They seem friendly enough.” He’d give her friendly. His mouth slammed down on hers again. Plundering. Taking. Reassuring himself with her taste, her touch. A rough growl vibrated deep in his chest.Mine. Saber only relaxed when Jo slipped her arms around his neck and leaned into him. He gentled the kiss, nibbling at her lips in a playful manner. Pulling away, he grinned down at her. “Well, just remember they’re unpredictable and keep clear. Ready to check the sheep?” “What a romantic suggestion,” Jo said, her kiss-swollen lips quirking upward in amusement. “I’d love to help with the sheep, although I’d be more help if I had my glasses. I can’t even see the scenery properly.” Saber chuckled, pleased to see her looking happier. After opening the gate, he snared her hand in his and stepped into the paddock. “I can describe it for you—if you want.” On seeing Jo’s enthusiastic nod, he viewed his home of Central Otago through the eyes of a visitor. After a pause, he started. “That’s the Taieri River down there. In the summer we go there fishing for trout and salmon. There’s nothing better than fresh trout filets cooked on the barbeque. If you’re very lucky, you might see a falcon gliding on the air currents. They’re rare, but there are still a few around here. Sometimes we have floods and the Taieri spills over its banks, but you’re safe enough now. Our autumn season is typically dry.” Jo turned in a slow circle. “There’s not much green grass up on hills here.” “No, there’s a lot of tussock. The snow covers most of this area during the winter. You ready to look at the sheep?” Saber wrapped his arm around her waist, taking pleasure in the intimacy. Dammit, the urge to purr was so strong he nearly followed through, but covered by turning the sound into a cough at the last second.

“What exactly are we looking at?” “We’ll check their water supply to make sure they have plenty, check the amount of feed they have and do a visual health check.” “Hmmm. Do you like being a farmer?” Saber tried to imagine living in the city and failed. Freedom to run whenever he felt the urge, the fresh air ruffling his fur. Being able to open his bedroom window and see trees and mountains and snow in the wintertime was important to his sense of well-being. “I enjoy living in the country. I have friends and family here and like working with animals. What do you do in the city?” Saber glanced at the trough and saw it was full of water. Enough feed for another three days. Good. Their rotation grazing plan was working well. “I haven’t worked since I was married.” Jo seemed more interested in the scenery than looking at him. Her voice was low and it wobbled a fraction. “Michael didn’t want me to work. After he died…well, Michael’s mother didn’t handle things very well. The family needed me. It wasn’t as if I needed money and had to work. For all his faults, Michael provided well.” Damn. Bad choice of question. The shadows had returned to her eyes. As he watched, she closed them briefly and took a deep breath. “Before that I was a qualified chef.” A chef? Hope surged strong and hard. This might work yet. “My friend Charlotte runs the local café. She tripped over the dog last week and broke her right arm. Sid was saying last night that the replacement isn’t working out and Charlotte’s desperate. I don’t suppose you would consider filling in as a temp?” Jo stopped walking suddenly. She nibbled her bottom lip, a nervous habit he was beginning to recognize. “No, I couldn’t. As I said, I haven’t worked as a chef for over three years. You lose the knack if you don’t do it all the time.” Saber hid his frown. What was she so worried about? Surely she wasn’t frightened of him? “Would you talk to Charlotte? Her husband is away for a month on an overseas assignment so he can’t help. Not that Charlotte’s told him from what I hear.” She worried her lip between white teeth and it turned a deep pink. Saber wanted to soothe away her worry and kiss her until she thought of nothing but how it was between them. Another first. It had always been about sex before. With Jo, it was about sex too, but there were more layers, and it scared the hell out of him. “I guess it wouldn’t hurt to talk to…um…Charlotte, but I’m sure she’ll find someone more suitable.” Not if he had his way. And Saber was sure Charlotte would see things the same way once he’d chatted with her. And if not, he’d just call in the favor Charlotte owed him. Jo didn’t need to know. “I’ll give Charlotte a call when we get back.” With his hand Saber indicated a narrow track that zigzagged up the side of the hill. He let Jo go first and spent an enjoyable five minutes watching the gentle sway of her ass while she climbed up the hill, heading toward the tors that jutted out like sharp teeth at the top. Oh, yeah. He was sure Charlotte would help

him if it meant another woman moving to Middlemarch. Finally, they arrived at the top. Jo was breathing heavily, unused to the exercise while he had an erection that made walking painful. “Want to sit for a spell?” “Good idea,” Jo muttered, collapsing onto the ground with a moan. “I am so unfit. I’m going to ache all over tomorrow.” “As it happens, I have a good massage technique,” Saber murmured, lowering himself to the ground at her side. “You should keep that in mind.” “I will,” she said, a hint of amusement in her tone. “It’s beautiful up here. I wish I had my glasses so I could see properly. The scenery in the distance is a bit of a blur.” Saber scanned the land below them and froze. His brothers were going to send him to an early grave. If he was a human, he’d worry about gray hair. They were shifting the cattle for him, which was fine, but they were in cat form. With Jo around and the reporter snooping about, it was stupidity. “Looks like Felix and Leo are shifting the cattle for me.” Difficult to keep the bite from his voice when he felt like throttling them. “What else do you need to do today?” “Nothing pressing.” “Then we can stay up here for a while? It’s nice.” Saber yanked on a long grass stalk and grinned lazily, leaning back to sprawl full length on the tussock. They were alone, and no one would sneak up on them up here without him hearing. “Give me a kiss,” he demanded. “Do you think you deserve one?” “Yeah. I’ve been a good boy. One kiss.” Emily suppressed a snort. Good boys didn’t look like him. With his dark hair and the dark stubble shading his lean jaw, he looked bad. Add in the sexy smile and she came up with positively sinful. Emily thought about Maggie for all of two seconds and pushed her friend to the back of her mind. Saber was right. They needed time before they could make things right between them. She’d stay a day or two before heading home and exerting her independence, rebuilding her life. Emily couldn’t let herself lean on another man. She refused to make that mistake again. Emily shrugged out of the jacket she wore and lifted her T-shirt over her head. She tossed them both aside. The rocks acted as a barrier, blocking the worst of the wind. The sunshine warmed her bare skin and breasts. Saber’s eyes widened, making her laugh. “I’ll raise your one kiss and see you,” she quipped. Chapter Five

“I like the way you think.” Saber stood without taking his eyes off her. He stripped off the khaki green shirt he was wearing and dropped it to the ground. Emily licked her lips and scrambled to her feet. “I’m looking at you.” Saber flicked the metal stud fastening his jeans and it popped open. He pushed his jeans down his legs and came to a sheepish stop. “Better get the boots first.” Emily giggled, the nerves in the pit of her stomach dissolving with the flash of humor. While he finished undressing, she bent to unlace her borrowed boots and kicked them off before shimmying out of the sweats. Once she’d removed her socks she was completely naked since her damp bra was back in Saber’s bathroom drying and her panties were history. “I’m looking at you, too. And I’d have to say it’s a very nice view. Come closer.” His whisper held promises of pleasure to come. His gentle fingers seduced as they trailed across her cheekbone then traced her lips. Unbidden, her mouth opened, taking his finger inside its warmth. His eyes seemed to darken and shine at the same time with strange gold flecks. Emily stroked her tongue along the length of his finger and sucked. Saber groaned, and corresponding frissons of excitement arced through Emily. A tightening sensation deep inside her womb brought a soft gasp. Saber pulled his finger free. “I want to make love to you.” “Yes.” Emily shivered at the flare of desire in his beautiful eyes. He gathered together their discarded clothes, arranging them on the ground in a rough bed. Without warning, he swung her into his arms and set her down on top of their clothes. “Let me look at you.” Emily lifted her hands over her head and arched her body in a seductive pose. “Look all you want. It makes me hot,” she whispered. The sun played peek-a-boo behind clouds. When Emily gazed straight up, she caught the graceful V of Canadian geese flying overhead. She shifted, looking back at Saber and parting her legs in silent invitation. “You’re beautiful.” Saber placed a finger in the middle of her chest and traced a path around her breast before touching the tip. They both watched her nipple contract at his faint touch. “Show me what you like, kitten, how you want me to touch you.” Emily frowned, searching his face for signs of teasing. He wanted her to touch herself in front of him? Michael— Jeesh, she had to stop thinking of the two-timing scumbag, stop comparing them. Saber wasn’t Michael. They were poles apart. Or at least she thought they were. She was finding it difficult to trust her instincts when it came to men. A sharp breath leveled out the traces of anxiety that started to beat at her. Michael was in the past. She had to push beyond the way he’d treated her, the way he’d beat her confidence down, making her totally dependent on him, then trampled on her feelings, discarding her like a piece of litter.Forget it . Emily forced her attention back on Saber. “And will you do the same for me?”

“Yes,” he said simply without hesitation. Saber blew a stream of warm air across the sensitive tip of her breast. Molten heat gathered between her legs. He took her nipple into the warmth of his mouth and drew gently with approximately the same force she’d used on his finger. Moving slowly, he seduced her even further with his slow, purposeful moves, plucking and playing her like an instrument. Emily burned with his every touch, a prickly awareness throbbing in her womb. “You trying to torture me?” Saber let her nipple pop from his mouth. The rigid peak glistened in the bright daylight. “Yeah. Is it working?” “What do you think?” “That you answer questions with questions.” “I’ve got to be tricky with you.” Her pulse pumped slow and steady. Every color seemed brighter and more dazzling. And Saber…he studied her as if she was a tasty piece of apple pie. Emily melted inside. “You make me crazy.” “Likewise.” Saber grinned. “Are you going to cooperate and show me what you like?” “Sit back and observe,” Emily instructed. She pinched a nipple and let her other hand drift across her stomach. Gently, she combed her fingers through her pubic curls, and using one finger, she parted delicate nether lips, exposing her clitoris to his gaze. Saber made a choked sound. “I thought I could wait, but you make me impatient. I want you now.” He leaned closer and raked his tongue across the soft swell of her stomach before moving between her legs and copying the exact move she’d executed less than a minute before with both fingers and tongue. She arched into his questing finger. It felt better when Saber parted her folds and teased her feminine flesh. He seemed to know exactly how to drive her higher with quick flicks of his tongue. Clever fingers skimmed across the sensitive nub, branding her flesh with his touch and making her body sing. The warm, wet rasp of his tongue traveled the length of her cleft. Fingers probed. Dipped and delved in her slippery folds until she wriggled impatiently, straining for release. Instead, the tight knot of exquisite pleasure ballooned. She was so close, but she wanted Saber to fill the emptiness that assailed her, to plug the holes left by… A scowl marred her face for an instant and she shoved away the barely formed thought. The man who pleasured her was considerate, responsible, infuriating and worth ten of Michael. “Kiss me.” Emily’s tone was fierce and demanding. She desperately wanted to feel his strong body pressing against hers, holding her, surrounding her with his strength. “Saber?” She reached down to grip his ears and tugged insistently. After one final lick across her tingling flesh, Saber moved. “No need for violence,” he said with a smirk. Then his mouth covered her own. She tasted herself on his lips. Smelled the clean, green scent of the tussock and the rich soil beneath them and heard the faint buzz of an insect. Saber guided his penis to her womb and pushed just enough that he was poised at her entrance. Emily held her breath, her belly quivering in ultra awareness as she waited for the thrust that would join them and fill the emptiness.

“Shit,” Saber said, not moving so much as a muscle. “What’s wrong?” Please, don’t let him change his mind and want to stop! Emily’s hands curled around his biceps as if she could physically restrain him should he decide to move. She could always grab his ears again. “We don’t have a condom. We didn’t use a condom last night. Or this morning.” He muttered another curse. Was that all? Emily’s breath eased out in relief. “I’m on birth control, and I haven’t been with anyone for ages. Just you.” “Good. That’s good. I can’t believe I forgot about condoms.” Saber’s voice was muffled since he was nuzzling her breast. Was that disappointment? Relief? Emily wasn’t sure. Then Saber pushed deeply, distracting her from everything except his possession and the quick punch of heat that ricocheted, echoing throughout her sensitized body. “You feel—” Saber withdrew before plunging back inside her pussy “—good.” He filled her perfectly, thrusting, pushing her higher. Heat gathered. Swelled. His hips jerked, hitting her sensitive clitoris at the perfect angle. Emily’s womb tightened, his next stroke making her shatter into release. Hard. Fast. Almost violent in force, her climax stole her breath as she clutched at Saber, her nails digging into his muscled shoulders. Emily held tight, lazily moving with Saber. Their bodies were shiny with perspiration. Their skin stuck together, making a slurping sound. Saber chuckled and kissed her deeply, timing his thrusts with the sweeping surges of his tongue. Their tongues tangled in a moist, erotic duel. “Again,” Emily said, tearing her mouth from Saber’s to take a quick breath. “Greedy,” Saber said, with a hint of laughter. “I haven’t come yet.” “Then there’s plenty of time for me to have seconds.” Saber loved seeing the laughter on her face, lighting up her brown eyes. “Time for a variation.” Her eyes widened—with excitement, he was pleased to note, not alarm. Saber rolled, lifting Emily so she sat astride him, still impaled by his cock. She grinned down at him and rose up before slowly sinking back down. “That’s the idea,” he said in approval. His eyes narrowed. Although he was in control of his feline genes, he knew his eyes would glint with gold flecks. Deep in the recesses of his mind, the cat roared, wanting to claim Jo as his mate. Saber wanted that too, but Jo needed more time. There was a wariness about her that warned him not to move too quickly. Jo rose before impaling herself again at a treacherously slow pace that set the feline on edge. Her head was thrown back, her hair glinting with streaks of gold and red in the sunshine. Her breasts bounced lightly with each move. A growl sounded deep in his chest, taking him by surprise. “Something wrong?” she demanded with a cheeky grin.

“Yeah, you’re going too slow. I’m going to turn old and gray before I climax. But I’ll go mad first.” Jo rose and sank back down on his cock, apparently unimpressed by his complaints. “I could always pull your ears and see how you like that.” Jo chuckled and gave a cruel flex of her hips. His breath caught, his balls so tight and achy it felt as though fire licked through his veins. Saber rocked upward, a breath hissing through compressed lips. “Ah, shit. Someone’s coming,” Saber muttered, catching the foreign sound of footsteps and the slide of a shoe against rock. “And it’s damn well not me.” Frustration coated his rueful words. “Where?” Emily’s hands flew upward to cover her breasts, then she gasped and one hand returned to cover her groin. “Who?” “I don’t know,” Saber said, lifting her off his body with consummate ease. “Wait there.” He rolled to his feet and strode to the start of the track leading down the hill. Despite discovery being imminent and embarrassment at being caught in the middle of a sexual interlude, she couldn’t help but admire the man’s backside. Her fingers positively itched to touch and fondle. Heck, she even thought about biting, putting her mark on the man. Ooh, possessive. Emily shook her head in wonder. That had sneaked up on her again and was a bit surprising, given her experience with Michael. She didn’t need a man.But you do need sex. “Oh, shut up,” she muttered. “Who are you telling to shut up?” Saber demanded, glancing over his shoulder. “It’s not polite to eavesdrop when I’m talking to myself. Who’s there? Was it your imagination?” “No, it’s my brothers,” Saber answered with disgust. “They’re heading this way.” “But I’ve got no clothes on,” Emily wailed, scrambling to her feet in horror. She grabbed at clothes and struggled to force arms into sleeves. Saber mightn’t worry about being caught with a raging erection, but she didn’t want anyone seeing her naked body again—apart from him. “Wrong way.” Saber’s mouth quivered in amusement. He sauntered over to her. “Let me help.” He deftly righted the T-shirt and it fell to her upper thighs. “Hey, bro. Whatcha doing?” Felix’s eyes held silent approval. Leo cuffed Felix over the shoulder, almost knocking Emily over in the process. Saber grabbed Emily before she fell and growled deep in his throat, but Leo continued unperturbed despite the menacing rumble. “Stupid question. Easy to see what they’ve been doing.” His interested gaze drifted from his naked brother to her. Emily sidled behind Saber, trying to hide from the glee she saw in his brothers’ faces. “Go away,” Saber said in a hard voice, seemingly unperturbed by his nakedness. Felix smirked. “We’re not interrupting, are we?” “Yes,” Saber snarled.

“No,” Emily said at the same time. Leo closed his right eye in a wink. “That’s what I like to hear. A consensus.” “I’ll give you a bloody consensus,” Saber said, advancing on his brothers. Leo held up his hands in mock surrender. “Don’t shoot the messengers. We came to tell you about the reporter. Just heard she’s rented a cottage on the outskirts of town.” Saber cursed and stomped over to his clothes. Emily stared, her gaze swinging from brother to brother. She didn’t understand, but clearly the brothers had communicated without saying a word. Emily accepted the pair of sweatpants Saber handed her and turned away to pull them on. Finally, the taut silence got to her. “Is something wrong?” “Nothing to concern yourself about,” Saber said smoothly. “Are you sure about that, bro?” Felix said, raising his brows in a manner that Emily could only call smart-ass. She sat down and shoved her feet into the socks and boots, trying to puzzle it all out. Why were they so worried about the reporter? All she wanted was a story. The cats were real. She’d seen them. Where was the harm in confirming black panthers lived in Middlemarch? “Why don’t you give her the story she wants so she’ll go away?” Three pairs of green eyes seared her with varying expressions, but one thing common to all was distaste. “We don’t want the cats locked up in a zoo,” Saber said, his tone terse as he spoke for them all. “We don’t want to talk to her because when she publishes her story, other reporters will come. Television crews. Talk-show hosts. It will be never-ending.” Emily shrugged, a little hurt because of his harsh attitude but determined to hide it. She had no right to put forward an opinion. Saber was right. This wasn’t anything to do with her. Michael had always told her she didn’t know anything since she spent all day at home doing housework. After lacing his boots, Saber gestured to his brothers. They nodded and left them alone. He closed the distance between them and smoothed a lock of hair from her eyes. “I’m sorry. The cats have lived around here for generations. My family and the other families who moved here from Scotland made a pact to keep them secret. There’s an old legend the people of Middlemarch tell their children. When the cats leave, bad luck will befall the town.” Interest stirred. “Did the cats come from Scotland or were they here before the settlers arrived?” “The settlers brought them.” “And the legend—do you believe it?” Saber’s green eyes glinted with gold as he stared at her. “Yes,” he said finally. “We all believe, which is why we’re giving the reporter the run-around.”

“Okay,” Emily said. It was obvious the local people had strong feelings about the cats. “She won’t hear anything from me.” Saber nodded and stood back to let her walk down the track in front of him. Emily navigated the steep track with care. The whole situation was weird, she decided, after worrying the facts in her mind. If the cats were so secret, why had they wandered into the bedroom this morning parading in front of a stranger? And what were they doing inside the house? Points to ponder. The drive back to the house was a contemplative one, both of them deep in thought. Saber pulled up outside the house. “I need to make a couple of phone calls before I take you to see Charlotte. We’ll find out about the job today.” “You were serious?” Emily blurted, tipping her face to the side so she could see him clearly. “Of course.” Saber seemed surprised, and his reaction warmed Emily through. The thought of being needed was a heady sensation and almost as good as making love with Saber. Emily frowned at the thought. Should she be thinking about the man like this? She’d thought the world of Michael, and he’d kicked her in the teeth. His actions had sucked every bit of self-belief and confidence in her natural instincts away, making Emily constantly second-guess her thoughts and actions. Buying tickets to the Middlemarch dance had been a step into the unknown. A sigh ghosted from her as she tried to remind herself she was staying strictly for the awesome sex. Yep, strictly the sex. Emily glanced down at her borrowed clothes and scowled. “I can’t go to an interview like this. I look like a ragamuffin. What will your friend think?” Saber’s gaze traveled leisurely down her body and back up again. “You look fine to me. Besides, Charlotte won’t mind.” “I mind,” Emily said, making her voice firm. “Is there somewhere I can buy some clothes?” “The local store has basics, but most people shop in Dunedin for clothes. Our next-door neighbor Jenny will lend you something.” “But she doesn’t know me,” Emily said faintly. “This is the country. Jenny won’t mind.” ***** Saber pulled his SUV up outside a stone building made from the local schist. A wooden sign hung from sturdy chains near the entrance, proclaiming that the café was called Storm in a Teacup. Middlemarch wasn’t a large town, but Saber had given her a guided tour on the way in, pointing out several motels and bed-and-breakfast places along with the local petrol station and garage. Emily had seen the railway station in full daylight—a smart white building with red doors and green window shutters. In the nearby reserve, a group of men were laboring to dismantle the marquee where the dance had been held. Further down the road was the local pub, which did a roaring trade on the weekends, according to Saber, but was quieter during the week. “This is Charlotte’s café,” Saber said. “She’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is why she’s having such a hard time. She doesn’t want to close and disappoint her customers.”

Emily nodded, feeling anxious, and yet, a little excited, too. She smoothed the fabric of her borrowed black skirt, wiping her moist palms at the same time. Her faint reply was lost in the rumble of a large red tractor. It chugged down the main street and parked outside the small grocery shop that doubled as the post office. Emily shook her head, smiling slightly. She didn’t think she’d ever get used to the varied farm machinery that shared the roads with cars and trucks. And bicycles. Emily had noticed there were lots of cyclists, and when she’d commented on it, Saber had said it was mainly tourists who were cycling the Otago Rail Trail. There was a bicycle stand outside the café with four dusty mountain bikes parked in it—the modern equivalent of horses and hitching posts, Emily thought with a grin. Saber ushered her inside. Several of the tables were occupied, and Emily noticed some of the people were sending anxious looks toward the kitchen and checking their watches. “Charlotte is probably in the kitchen. We’ll go through.” “Hey, Charlotte. This is Jo Scarlet, the chef I rang you about.” “Hi, Jo.” Charlotte extended her left hand for Emily to shake since her right was encased in plaster and held tight to her chest in a sling. The white sling was peppered with splotches of tomato sauce and sprinkled with what looked like coffee grinds. Charlotte’s forehead was crinkled and her blonde hair stuck up at the back as if she’d repeatedly run her good hand through it. In short, she seemed harassed. A young girl who Emily decided was in her late teens, hurried into the kitchen. “The people at table four want to know how long their meal will be.” “I’m going as fast as I can,” Charlotte said, her voice only a shade away from testy. “I only have one hand. Offer them a free glass of wine or a hot drink and tell them it will only be a few more minutes.” The girl nodded and left the kitchen, the spring door swishing after her. “Charlotte, why don’t you let Jo do it for you?” Saber asked. “Just tell her what you want. That way you can see if she’ll suit as your relief while you recuperate.” “I have to admit, I’m not doing a very good job,” Charlotte said with a rueful sigh. “Would you be willing to take over right now?” This was moving so fast. Emily hesitated, shifting from foot to foot while the two friends waited for her decision. Becoming involved in cooking again sounded like fun. Temptation tickled through her. What did she have to go back to in Dunedin? Michael’s family who, although she loved them to bits, were likely to shun her at the moment and an empty house were her only options. Her best friend wasn’t talking to her. If she returned home, she’d rattle around in the empty house. This would be a new start, a chance to get back to the workforce and start over doing something she loved—being a chef. And the fact that Saber was here didn’t hurt any… “I’ll do it,” Emily said. “What do you want me to do first?” “Here’s the order.” Charlotte pointed to the white slip of paper clipped up above a stainless worktable. “Two Greek salads, a soup of the day and one roast pepper and ricotta loaf. Saber, grab the chef’s tunic from behind that door, will you?” Charlotte continued to explain the menu and showed Emily where she kept everything. Emily washed her hands and rolled up the sleeves of her borrowed blouse. As she listened to Charlotte’s instructions, she put on the white hip-length tunic and buttoned it up. Between

them, they assembled the starters for table four. The waitress came and collected them to deliver to the diners, leaving Charlotte to run through the main courses. “Charlotte, you’ll make Jo nervous if you continue to hover like that. Why don’t we have a coffee out in the garden and leave her to it. Jo will call you if she has a problem. Right, Jo?” Emily nodded, her mind already on the main courses and what she needed to cook. “Sure. I’ll shout if I have a problem.” The waitress hustled in with an order for afternoon tea. Scones with jam and cream. “I’ll drive you back to Dunedin later this evening to collect your clothes,” Saber said. “We’ll leave you to it. Charlotte, I’ll grab us a table out in the garden. I’ll have my usual.” He brushed a kiss over Emily’s lips, nodded to the young waitress and strode off whistling. Emily stared after him, bemused by his casual affection. And in public. A slow smile bloomed before reverting to a grimace. He was also taking charge of her life. If she was to stay, she’d have to find somewhere else to live—space to think and adjust. The idea of stepping from one controlling relationship to another was abhorrent. Although Saber seemed different from Michael, Emily needed to be one hundred percent certain of her place in a relationship before she let it advance to something more permanent. “I’ve always liked Saber,” Charlotte said. “About time he settled down.” Emily gaped again. She seemed to be doing a lot of that. “Settled down?” “Yes.” Charlotte beamed, which lifted her face from tired and drawn to pretty in a next-door girl kind of way. “And from my point of view, he couldn’t have picked a better woman. A chef, just when I’m about to tear my hair out. Are you sure you’ll be okay on your own?” “Yes. Really. I’ll shout if I get stuck.” Her and Saber? Settled together? Emily opened her mouth to dispute Charlotte’s assumption but nothing came out. Instead, a sense of warmth pumped through her body, a sense of belonging, a sense of home. Wonder followed the realization. She’d only arrived in Middlemarch yesterday, but it seemed as though she’d lived there for years. Chapter Six
Saber pulled up outside her Dunedin home, and unaccountably, nerves jumped up and down in the pit of her stomach like a bunch of kangaroos bounding around. Emily forced away the unease at her past and present colliding. “Do you want me to come in?” “I might be a while. I need to ring Maggie and ask her to keep an eye on the house for me as well as pack and clean out the fridge.” The kangaroos jumped up and down in agitation at the thought of contacting Maggie. She’d probably hang up.

Saber squeezed her hand in silent reassurance before climbing out of the SUV, and Emily’s heart pumped out an uneven beat. She swallowed a lump of emotion and fumbled for the door handle. Time to admit it. Maybe time to stop running as well. Saber Mitchell had crept up on her when she wasn’t looking. Now all she had to do was decide if she wanted to take the risk… Emily unlocked her front door, slipped off the high heels she’d worn with the borrowed skirt and stepped inside. She led the way to a spick-and-span kitchen with everything in its place. Professionally decorated, Emily had hated it on sight. Being away for a day hadn’t changed the room or the house she disliked but, somehow, somewhere, in that time she’d transformed. Emily frowned at the designer bench and cupboard units. “It’s difficult to imagine you in this kitchen,” Saber said from behind her. Perceptive man. “Michael had very fixed ideas on how he wanted things. We did a lot of entertaining and appearances were important. At the time, I didn’t mind. And since his death, I’ve been too wrapped up in misery and self-pity to worry about change.” “You’re making changes now,” Saber observed. “Yes, I guess I am.” Moving to Middlemarch was a change all right. Working. Cooking again. Saber… “I’ll go and pack.” Emily was aware of Saber following her. It wasn’t that she could hear him, more instinct, the prickling awareness that told her he was behind her. “This room isn’t you either.” His words confirmed she’d been right about him following. He peered over her shoulder at the monochromatic room. White—the color of purity. The color of lies. “Dreadful, isn’t it?” Emily crossed over to the wardrobe and yanked open the door. She stood on tiptoe, straining to reach a suitcase on the top shelf. “I’ll get it.” Saber made the whole process look easy. He set the suitcase down and advanced on her, a determined expression on his tanned face. His green eyes glowed with purpose. “We’ll make some good memories right now. Before you do your packing and make the phone call.” Saber toed off his shoes and yanked off his socks then stood. His fingers worked the buttons of his denim shirt. He shrugged it off, baring his golden skin to her gaze. Muscles rippled below the surface as he unfastened the metal buttons on his jeans and slid them down his legs. He wore boxer shorts beneath his jeans, a white pair that clung to his hips and cupped his penis, leaving nothing to the imagination. “Memories?” Emily said with a trace of a stutter. Those stupid kangaroos were doing a number inside her stomach again. She moistened her bottom lip and couldn’t resist staring when he removed his boxers. “Yeah.” He prowled toward her and Emily found herself backing up until the wall behind stopped further retreat. “Not scared, are you?” The words were a soft, sensual taunt, and they sent excitement whizzing through her body. Her breasts felt suddenly ultra sensitive, the tips abrading against the lace of her bra. He leaned into her, rubbing his cock against her belly and caging her against the wall. Saber stared down at her, a handsome man with spectacular green eyes and a very sexy grin. Difficult not to stare when a man looked that good, and difficult to believe he seemed to want more than the one night she’d originally committed to.

“You’re overdressed for the occasion,” he murmured. A grin burst from her without warning. “I’d hate to be the odd man out.” “I’m the only man required,” he fired back, pokerfaced. Emily sobered for an instant. Yes, he was the only man she wanted, but she didn’t intend to tell him—not until she’d known him for a little longer. “How long do you think it will take me to undress? Taking bets now.” Saber’s sinful mouth curled into a lazy grin and it echoed in his eyes. “I wonder if I should worry about your predilection for games. First poker and now betting.” “It’s you,” Emily blurted, barely understanding herself. The grin widened to a toothy smirk. “We’ll discuss it later, but right now I have other things on my mind.” “Judging by the iron-hard thing poking into my stomach, I think I can guess where your mind dwells.” “Nothing wrong with sex,” Saber said cheerfully. “I happen to like sex. Two minutes,” he added. “Two… You’re on! I bet I can do it in one.” Saber backed away to sit on the bed. He propped up the pillows, whacking them with his fist until he was comfortable and settled back. “One minute. I’d like to see that.” Emily yanked the borrowed blouse over her head and wriggled the skirt over her hips. One flick of her hand and wrist loosened her bra. She flung it away. The boxer shorts she’d borrowed from Saber were next, and they hit the top of the pile of clothes seconds later. Fully naked, Emily posed, one hand on her hip and a triumphant grin on her lips. “Two seconds over. I win,” Saber said. “You don’t have a watch. How would you know?” Saber reached out and grabbed her hand. He tugged her toward the bed and pulled her down so she lay at his side. “Actually, I’m wrong,” he murmured. “We both win.” He rolled, his mouth slamming down on hers. The need for argument seeped from Emily the second his lips hit hers. She opened to him, and he thrust his tongue inside her mouth. His previous gentleness and consideration disappeared, replaced by aggression, determination. Excitement on her part. Her heart rate increased as arousal swept through her. She wanted him. Now.Forever, her conscience whispered. Emily ignored the traitorous whisper and went with the flow. Their limbs tangled with urgency. “Too fast for you?” he demanded an instant before he nibbled at her neck. “No. I want you to go fast.” Emily sucked in an excited breath when he nipped again. His touch was a primitive throb through her veins. Faster. More. Now. Her womb ached as the slow slide of his tongue soothed the nip he’d inflicted. His finger lightly circled her nipple while his leg slid between hers in silent

encouragement for her to give him access. When she obeyed and parted her legs, he pinched her nipple. The small pain arced straight to her pussy and brought a low moan of approval from deep at the back of her throat. She felt his aroused penis nudge at her leg then he shifted and slid into her womb in one seamless thrust. Emily shuddered, the throbbing hardness of him just what she needed to ease the relentless ache inside. She’d barely taken a breath when he started plunging deep, retreating and filling her again. “Close your eyes,” he ordered. “Feel the way I move inside you.” Emily let her eyes slide shut. She clutched at his shoulders, moving with him with increasing urgency. Deep in her cunt a heavy, pulsating sensation pulled at her. Saber thrust again. Hard. An almost painful fullness held her in thrall. Emily held on tight and arched into his next thrust, shuddering at the breadth of his cock. She kissed his shoulder. “Bite me,” he suggested. The husky command stirred carnal fantasies. She liked the idea of marking him, branding Saber as her man. His earthy masculine scent surrounded her. Enticed. Emily bit down, savoring the salty wetness of his flesh. Saber made a dark sound. Exquisite pleasure engulfed her without warning. She shuddered, adrift on the hit of adrenaline, overdosing on his scent, his touch, the taste of him. The next powerful thrust of his body pushed her into climax. A fiery explosion rocked her body. He sucked hard on her shoulder and introduced the merest suggestion of teeth. The pain was fleeting, brushed away in another intense explosion as wave upon wave of spellbinding pleasure speared through Emily. Overwhelming and awe-inspiring, she’d never felt the like before. Emily clawed at his back, riding out the primitive throb that sang the length of her body. She felt the spill of his seed deep in her womb. His large frame shook, each breath coming deep and unsteadily, then he stilled and hugged her tightly to his chest. He sought her lips and kissed her deeply, cupping her face with his hands. Emily’s eyes flickered. She focused on his sexy face and smiled. “That was wonderful. I’ve never felt like that before.” Saber kissed her again, lightly on the lips, his green eyes alight with laughter. “Better memories now?” Emily chuckled, stretching slowly beneath him. Her pussy flexed, tightening around his cock. “Oh, yeah.” This bed had never seen action this hot. A giggle escaped. “I like the way your mind works, Saber Mitchell.” Saber hoped she liked him enough that she’d agree to stay in Middlemarch after Charlotte was ready to work again, but he wasn’t fool enough to voice the thought. He stroked her soft hair and rolled so they were still connected, but Jo lay on top of his larger frame. “That’s better,” she murmured. “You were getting a bit heavy.” “Wouldn’t want murder by squashing,” he said, tugging lightly on a golden curl. “Why don’t you shower and pack? I need to catch up with my younger brothers.” “You want to shower with me?” “I’ll join you in a minute.” Saber lifted her off his chest with a trace of regret. She belonged with him. The

minx waggled her backside as she sashayed from the bedroom, pulling a grin from him. The water pounded through the pipes and pelted the glass walls of the shower stall. He heard the shower door open and close before he rummaged through his jeans to retrieve his cell phone. He flipped it open and pushed speed dial for Joe’s phone. “Yo! How’s it hanging?” Saber rolled his eyes the minute he realized he’d glanced down to check. “It’s hanging just fine. Sly, what are you doing answering Joe’s phone?” “Joe’s a bit busy at the moment.” He heard the humor in his younger brother’s voice and that, combined with a feminine moan, filled in the blanks. “I’ll talk to you. Do you know where Jo’s friend Maggie is?” “Yeah.” “And?” Saber prompted, holding onto his patience. Another feminine cry sounded. “That’s it, Mags,” Saber heard Joe say. Saber shook his head and couldn’t help a grin. “Jo wants Maggie to keep an eye on her house for her. Do you think she’ll do it?” “I don’t know. She said she doesn’t want to talk to Jo because she’s too angry.” He paused before saying, “Do you think Jo would let us look after her house? Joe and I could do with a place in Dunedin rather than finding a hotel each time we come to the city.” Saber wanted to act the big brother and protest. His two youngest brothers were the instigators of most of the mischief. The idea of them having a base—no—they were adults and responsible for their own actions. Saber took a deep breath and went against gut instinct. He had to let them make their own mistakes, and he trusted them enough to know that they’d do nothing to endanger the feline population while they were away from Middlemarch. “I’ll check with Jo and ring you back.” “Give us half an hour,” Sly said. “We’re going to be busy for at least that long.” “I won’t ask.” Saber clicked his phone shut and pulled on his jeans. He strode through to the bathroom and entered at the exact moment Jo shut the water off. The door opened and she reached for a towel. Droplets of water beaded on her body, drawing his gaze. Jo blotted up the water with a buttercup yellow towel. “Let me do that.” A spluttered laugh escaped and she backed away until the bathroom wall got in the way. She held the towel up in front of her breasts, her brown eyes alight with mirth. “I’ll never get my packing done if I let you help.” “I can’t tempt you?” “Always,” she said with an honesty that kicked him in the gut.

His mate.Saber closed the gap between them and brushed his fingers across her lips, then tempted by her soft sigh, he kissed her, nibbling gently at her lips. Pulling away, he inhaled her soapy scent and ran his hand through her damp hair. Knowing that she wanted him as much as he wanted her was a balm to his spirit and made him step away and stop pushing. When they were back at Middlemarch and settled into a routine would be the right time to take their relationship that step further. “Maggie is with my brothers,” he said, stepping away so she could dry herself and dress. Saber leaned against the wall, fascinated with the process she went through before she dressed. He watched her smooth lotion on her skin, onto her arms and legs, shoulders and breasts. She dabbed a different lotion on her face before padding back through to the bedroom. “What do you mean Maggie is with your brothers?” “Together sexually.” Saber didn’t feel right talking about his brothers’ sex lives. Coping with his own sex life was enough. “Three of them?” Jo sounded faint. “Yeah. They sounded perfectly happy. Sly asked if he and Joe could look after the house for you. I presume Maggie would be involved in the house sitting.” “Three of them together?” Shock colored her words, and her eyes were big and round. As was her mouth. Saber tapped her sagging jaw with his forefinger. “My younger brothers like a ménage. It appears that your friend is inclined that way, too.” Jo held up her right hand in a clear stop signal. “Too much information. They… Maggie…” She shook her head. “Maggie never gave any indication. You don’t—” “I’m strictly a one-woman man.” “Well, thank goodness for that.” Jo gave a self-conscious laugh. “The house?” he prompted, hiding his amusement. “Can Sly and Joe housesit? Or you could charge them rent.” “I guess,” she said, but she didn’t look that convinced. “Would they agree to a trial basis?” “Good idea. I’ll start on your fridge while you pack.” “You’re going to help?” Intense astonishment touched her face. Of course he intended to help. The ex had done a real number on her confidence and given her a poor perception of males in general. He chuckled suddenly. “I do have an ulterior motive. I’d like a date. Dinner out together. Maybe a movie before we drive back to Middlemarch. What do you say?” “I can’t remember the last time I went to a movie.” “Better get moving then,” Saber said. In truth, it was a first for him, too. He couldn’t remember the last

time he’d been on a date. He hadn’t wanted to get to know a woman or considered how she felt. In the past, it had been about sex. Disappointment and finally acceptance that there was no mate for him had made him this way. Saber glanced at Jo as she opened a drawer and pulled out black lacy underwear. With Jo, it was different. With a sense of wonder he realized he really wanted to know what made her tick. The Scarlet woman had not only triggered his mating instincts, but he was coming to care for her, too. Chapter Seven
Despite the late night, Emily was up early the next morning. She slid from beneath the covers, trying not to wake Saber. A tanned hand snagged her hand and hauled her back. “Jo, kitten. It’s early. We have plenty of time to wake up in a civil fashion.” Emily eyed the tented sheet covering his groin. “I don’t think down and dirty sex equates with civil. Civil is tea parties and cucumber sandwiches.” She had to tell him her name wasn’t Jo. When she’d thought it would be for one night, a false name was sensible. Things had changed the minute she met Saber Mitchell. “Come back to bed.” “Not now.” His sleepy green eyes were a temptation hard to resist. If ever a man possessed bedroom eyes, it was Saber. “I need to find somewhere to live. I can’t stay here with you.” “What?” The word came out at a roar. Saber dropped her hand and leapt from the bed. “Jo, stay. I want you in my life.” “Saber, I want my own space. Everything is going too fast. I want to slow down.” His fierce glare told her what he thought of her reasoning. Didn’t men like easy sex with no commitments? No strings. Michael certainly had. Yes, she liked Saber a lot but she wasn’t ready to commit to a man again. She wanted independence, to run her own life and make her own decisions. And…and… She was scared. There! She’d admitted it, even though it was only to herself. “Ineed to slow down.” Saber scowled. “I thought things were going well between us. That we might have a future.” A future. Emily swallowed nervously. She was hurting him and she hated herself for it. But better now than later when the damage could be even worse with her heart involved. She really liked Saber, but the things Michael had done, her past history, kept intruding, feeding her fear and making it difficult to trust. Was it so wrong to want time to think and make sure she wasn’t going to make another mistake? “I really like you, Joanna. Please stay.” Emily closed her eyes for a second. Each word was a body blow, weakening her resolve, even though she knew she was doing the right thing in waiting. Delaying. Pain throbbed behind her eyes. She wished she had her glasses to hide behind, but they were out in the kitchen where she’d left them last night. A part of her wanted to walk into his arms and never leave, but she had to face Maggie and Maggie’s parents soon. Despite her current differences with Maggie, she refused to walk away and end their long friendship this way. Over a man, or men in Maggie’s case. She cast a quick glance at Saber and noted his clear expectation, the impatience with her fears in his unyielding jaw. It rattled her temper and

loosened her tongue. “Oh, for goodness sake! My real name is Emily. I didn’t even give you the right name. Our whole time together has been based on a lie. Don’t you see? I’m not capable of a relationship with a man. I couldn’t keep my husband’s interest. Give me time, dammit.” “Emily? But why did you tell me your name was—never mind.” Saber gave an impatient shrug. “It’s not important. I can’t believe you’re going to walk away without even giving us a chance.” “I’m not exactly walking away. I’m stepping back to take stock.” No. She wasn’t going to lie to herself. Terror filled her at the idea of giving her total trust again. Yep, no doubt about it. She was a scaredy cat, and she needed distance to make sense of what was between them. Emily had to be sure. “Coward,” he taunted. “You’re scared.” Jeez, was she that transparent? Too bad. It was obvious he was irritated with her, but she wasn’t going to be pushed into a hasty decision. She wasn’t going to risk it, even though her heart skipped a crazy beat each time she looked at him. Emily suspected she was halfway in love with the man then she scoffed at the notion. Love at first sight didn’t exist, but this feeling felt suspiciously close to the faithless emotion. It terrified her. “Can I use your phone? I’ll call a cab to take me to the café. I’ll find somewhere else to live as soon as possible.” “This is the country. We don’t have a cab service.” His voice held an angry edge, but Emily didn’t feel the slightest fear of physical violence. Saber stalked toward her. “I’ll take you to the café, but there aren’t many houses available for rent in the town.” “I’ll stay at a motel until something turns up. Charlotte will help me.” He stopped a body’s width away from her, his naked chest close enough to tempt. As she stared, his chest expanded. Emily swallowed again and chewed on her bottom lip. Touch. She badly wanted to run her fingers across his muscled body, close the distance between them and slant her lips over his masculine nipples. There were so many things she still wanted to do to him, with him. Explore her sexuality. Different positions. Even try some of the toys she’d seen on the Internet. Taking a simple walk together on a summer’s evening. The list was endless. But dread and worry were there, too. The worry that the blame lay with her and history would repeat. She turned away, gathered up her clothes and wadded them into a ball, trying to avoid looking at the bed. Her gaze hit the floor and the tangled mess of covers instead. A shaft of pure longing zapped through her heart, but she ignored it, knowing to give in was a mistake. Emily walked away, taking her fear with her.
Saber thought about trying to talk her into staying but discarded the idea. He needed to think.Think, dammit. He came up with a big blank. Shit, he’d never had this sort of a problem with a woman before. They usually chased him—they didn’t run away. “I’ll drive you to the café.”Great solution, Mitchell. Offer to help her leave. “Thanks.” The firm set of her mouth told him she was prepared for an argument, so he bit back the orders that tickled the tip of his tongue. Firm set—huh, she looked plain mulish. He needed to do some serious thinking and come up with a sound strategy to change her mind.

“Half an hour okay?” At her nod, Saber padded into the bathroom and turned on the shower. There had to be a way to convince Jo—no, Emily—to stay with him. It was too early for talk of love, but she had an innate integrity and goodness that would make her a good mate. They were sexually compatible. And it wasn’t as if they had any say in the matter. Emily Scarlet was his ordained mate. It was there in the way she called to his feline blood. Even though she didn’t know it now, she would soon, and she’d just have to get used to the fact they were meant to be together. He should have pierced her skin and let their enzymes mix to make their relationship permanent. Once his enzymes crawled through her body, she’d understand. Saber grunted without humor and stepped under the warm water, grabbed the bar of soap and scrubbed it across his chest. Should have. Too late now. He’d thought he’d acted with restraint and honor, not binding them together. Pride made him want a willing mate, not one who was forced… ***** The drive to the café was conducted in silence. He pulled up outside the stone building. “Thanks.” She fumbled with the door and hustled from the car with enough haste to dent his masculine conceit. Emily Scarlet walked away without looking back. Saber’s gut churned with tension, and he badly wanted to stomp into the café and drag her off to the nearest bed. Once in bed, he’d keep her there until she agreed to stay. He’d seduce her into staying. And this time he wouldn’t be so restrained in binding them. His hand thumped against the steering wheel and a low, pithy curse escaped. He glared out the window and swore under his breath. That bloody reporter woman again. The woman was questioning everyone in the area, being systematic about it by starting at one end of Middlemarch and gradually working her way through the town and surrounding district. She hadn’t arrived out at the Mitchell station yet, but it was only a matter of time. Saber slipped a pair of sunglasses on and slid down in the driver’s seat, hoping she wouldn’t notice him.No such luck. The woman glanced up and down the street, a grin stretching across her face when she saw his vehicle. No doubt, she’d memorized the number plate. She changed direction, heading straight for him, determination written in every step of her petite body. Saber straightened abruptly and started the vehicle. He planted his foot on the accelerator and burned rubber as he took off. A glance in the rear vision mirror told him he’d pissed her off. Good. No reason why he should be the only one out of sorts. Saber drove down to the end of the road. The reporter woman stamped from sight. One down. Back to the problem at hand. A plan. If ever a man needed a plan it was him. He’d go back to the farm and spend some time in feline form. Do some thinking and format a plan. Emily Scarlet was worth the fight, and he didn’t intend to let her go without a struggle. This was his mate. His mate. ***** Saber screeched to a halt outside the house. He stomped inside and headed straight for the kitchen. Felix and Leo were sitting at the table eating breakfast. Saber grabbed a mug and filled it with coffee. “What?” he snapped when he glanced up to see his brothers watching him.

Felix sighed and shook his head from side to side. “Sad. Pitiful really.” “Never thought I’d see the day when the great Saber Mitchell was stymied by a woman.” Leo leaned back in his chair and smirked without trying to hide his amusement. Leo’s glee made Saber’s hands curl to fists. Brothers or not, they needed to stop prodding at his temper. If they knew what was good for them they’d button it. “Oh, yeah. You wait until you meet your match. See how much fun it is for you.” Saber’s glare didn’t make the slightest bit of difference to the size of their smirks. “I’m going to shift the sheep in the west paddock. The weather forecast this morning said it might snow.” “It feels cooler,” Felix said. “We’ll help.” Leo let his chair settle on all four legs with a loud thump. “I could do with a long run.” Felix picked up his mug and took a sip. “Do you think it’s safe to shift with that reporter creeping around Middlemarch?” “Like you were worried yesterday,” Saber snapped. “Bloody idiots. I told you after the first story appeared in the newspaper that you’d have to take more care. Each time you fool around like that you put us all in danger.” “Nah, not a problem,” Leo said with a careless shrug. “We’ll smell her coming. She wears this god-awful perfume. It’s enough to make a good, self-respecting shifter sneeze. Believe me, she won’t creep up on us even if the wind’s blowing in the other direction. Besides, she only skulks around between nine and three. No one sees much of her outside these hours. Weird, huh?” An hour later, Saber parked his SUV on the gravel shoulder of the road, near the gate into the west paddock. There was a set of sheep yards just inside the fence and an old wooden woolshed. “We’ll split up and herd the sheep down to the yards,” Saber said. “Might as well drench them at the same time.” Felix and Leo climbed out of the vehicle and Saber joined them. Once they clambered over the fence, Saber opened the main gate leading into the yards. Felix and Leo were already stripping their clothes off and stuffing them in a watertight container they’d placed at the back of the yards for storage while they were in feline form. Habit made him glance in all directions before he stripped. He formed a picture of a black leopard in his mind and automatically the change started. In his peripheral vision he was aware of his brothers shifting, too. Bones lengthened, teeth grew and his jaw rearranged. The sense of disembodiment occurred as bones and sinew reshaped. A long tail grew and short black fur formed on his body. Saber dropped to all fours. His tail swished. A grunt came from deep in his throat and he prowled over to the nearest tree to mark territory. A low cough from Felix signaled his brothers’ readiness, and Saber raced toward them in a mock charge. A friendly scuffle, punctuated by growls broke out until Saber ended it with a snarl. They split up, each going in different directions to search out the sheep. The tussock ground was soft underfoot, the soft breeze ruffling his fur as Saber loped across the open ground, heading for the stand of trees their great grandparents had planted.

The faint bleat of a sheep snagged his attention. Saber slowed his pace, careful of each footfall. Cats and sheep weren’t a natural fit, but despite this, their flock had come to accept their presence. Saber crept through the long tussock on his belly until he was above them. He stood to reveal his presence, letting out a short bark. The sheep’s heads jerked up. He gave another barking growl and the sheep bunched together. Saber advanced on them. The closest sheep stamped its front feet uneasily before starting down the hill. The rest of the sheep hesitated for an instant then trotted after the leader. Saber growled again for good measure, sending the sheep speeding on their way to the yards. Satisfied he’d find them later, Saber loped off, heading up the hill. How the hell did he convince the woman to live with him? How did he tell her they were destined mates? Just being apart brought an uneasy panic to his gut. There were all the other single men in Middlemarch for a start. Saber imagined she’d present a temptation, and when the single men found she wasn’t staying with him, it would be like an open invitation. They’d converge like a group of starving children wanting after-school snacks. Saber’s whiskers twitched in irritation as he converted the analogy to adult terms. Yep, like single, sex-starved men who hadn’t seen a woman for months. A rumbling growl started low in his throat. His mate. He must take action to make sure everyone else knew and accepted it as truth. But the how eluded him. Saber spied half a dozen sheep on a ridge. He leapt across a bubbling stream and bounded up the hill to drive the sheep down to the yards. Two hours later, sides heaving with fatigue, and dust and mud coating his fur, he herded the last of the stragglers into the yard. Felix who had shifted to human form, slammed the gate closed behind the last of the sheep. Saber shifted, his bones popping as they shrank back to human form. “Must be getting old.” “Huh. Leo, he said he’s getting old. That’s a new excuse for tiredness from spending the night with a woman. I’d say it was at least four times they did it last—” “Enough.” Saber grabbed his jeans from the clothing safe and yanked them on. He tugged the zipper up. “I can’t wait for the day when you meet your mates. I’m going to get a cold beer, pull up a seat and sit back to watch the show. And you can bet I’ll be laughing long and loud when you’re blundering around trying to get your mate to do what you want her to.” “I think he’s a little testy,” Felix said. “Damn right I’m testy. Jo, I mean Emily—her name is Emily—wants to find a place of her own. She’s moving out.” Felix and Leo gaped at him. Leo frowned. “But that will be like open house in Middlemarch. Every single male in the area will try to move in on her.” “Tell me something I don’t know.” Saber headed to the shed for the drenching gun. “You could always get in first and ask her out on a date,” Felix called after him. Saber halted abruptly and spun to face his brothers. “A date?”

“Yeah. Radical idea, huh?” Felix smirked, a wide toothy grin that made Saber’s bad mood deepen. Leo jumped the fence to grab the drench from the SUV. “Yeah, good idea. Play your cards right and she might even sleep with you on the first date.” Saber growled deep in his chest and his lips curled back to reveal sharp teeth. His brother was damned lucky there was a fence between them. ***** Children spilled from the school seconds after the bell went. A school bus pulled up and several parents arrived to collect children. Loud screeches and laughter filled the air, drifting through his open window. Saber parked as close to the café as he could, given the number of parents’ cars clogging up the available parking, and climbed from his vehicle to wait for Emily Scarlet. Charlotte had said she would cope since Emily had prepared everything for the evening meal. The food only required reheating, and she and her waitress could cope with that this early in the week. He had a plan of sorts. Talk. Date. Bed. The plan was full of holes, which didn’t help his temper any. Saber scanned the faces of the parents and did a second take when the reporter exited the main entrance of the school with a small girl. She had a kid? Well, this was a surprise his brothers hadn’t mentioned. The presence of a kid explained the regular hours she spent trying to question the locals. She saw him, and Saber took pleasure in the way her dark eyes narrowed in frustration. It seemed she drew the line when it came to mixing business with her duties as a parent. Saber waved, feeling his mood lighten as she walked away with her child. When Emily didn’t come, he went looking for her. The café was busier than he’d thought it would be. Several small tables had been dragged together to form one long one. It was covered with a decorative cloth bearing an assortment of cartoon characters. The tabletop groaned with food—plates of sandwiches, bread faces decorated with the colorful candy sprinkles called hundreds and thousands, sausage rolls, small cheerio sausages and lots of other things that looked and smelled delicious even though he wasn’t completely sure of their identity. The door from the café garden opened and at least ten small children trotted inside followed by their parents and Charlotte. They slipped onto the empty chairs at the table, chattering loudly with much excitement. A children’s birthday party. Smiling, Saber went searching for Emily. He found her in the kitchen, putting the finishing touches to a huge birthday cake decorated like a medieval castle complete with toy figurines and animals. “That looks great.” “Ohh!” Her hand flew up to cover her heart. “You scared me.” She wore a pair of glasses with brown and gold rims. Sexy. He liked them. A smear of chocolate icing decorated her chin. Her hair was confined in a ponytail, but tendrils had escaped, softening her face. Saber’s gaze drifted to her lips. “What? Do I have icing on my face?” “Yeah. I’ll get it.” Saber closed the distance between them. Grasping her upper arms, he pulled her against his chest and lowered his head to claim those tempting lips. He’d get the icing later. It was like coming home. Familiar yet exciting, too.His mate. He nibbled her lips and urged her to open for him. Her scent washed over him, the light floral scent reminding him of the outdoors and relaxing the spiral of tight need inside. One good bite would allow their enzymes to mingle. She’d accept him fully. Without reservation. Saber took the kiss deeper, thrusting his tongue into her warm mouth, enticing a reaction

from Emily. While a part of his mind demanded he bite, the other, more human side fought for free choice. Saber shuddered, fighting his feline as Emily started to participate in the kiss. Her mouth moved against his, and she wound her arms around his neck, pressing her soft breasts against his chest. His senses intensified as the feline pushed. She tasted of coffee and icing and mystery. Acute arousal simmered beneath the surface, and Emily felt it. She sighed against his mouth then pulled free. “I’ll lose my job,” she chided, her brown eyes sparkling behind the glasses lenses. “Just when Charlotte’s asked me to stay on until the end of the year. Go away, I need to finish off the cake.” She picked up a packet of candles and started to push them into the top of the castle. Saber’s chest rose and fell. “So you’re staying?” “I said I would. She wants to take a holiday and cut back on her hours when she gets back. We’d split the shifts between us.” Charlottehad asked her to stay.Excellent. “I missed you.” A blush crept to her cheeks. “I…I missed you, too.” Satisfaction eased through Saber on hearing the soft confession. Yes, hope! The need to push was a drug in his system, but he fought, instinctively knowing she’d baulk at high-handed behavior. “Need a hand?” Emily gulped. Why had she told him she missed him? It wasn’t what she’d meant to say at all, even if it was the truth. “Thanks, but I’m almost done.” She pushed the last candle into the chocolate icing and stood back to study the end result. “Ready to go home?” he asked. Home. Emily froze at the thought. It was funny how much at home she felt in Middlemarch even though the thought of a more permanent relationship with Saber scared her half to death. “I need to go to see the real estate agent about renting somewhere. I presume there is a real estate agent in Middlemarch?” “The farming supplies store doubles as an agent for the area,” Saber said. “You might have trouble finding a property.” “I know. That’s what Charlotte said. The only house she knew of is already rented out to someone else. That reporter.” Saber glared at her. “So the reporter really is staying in Middlemarch for a while?” “It sounds like it. She has a daughter who’s attending the school. Sounds like a permanent thing to me.” “Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Let’s go. You know you’re welcome to stay with us.” Saber strode to the door, and she couldn’t help but admire his butt. A tremor slid downward from her breasts to settle in her lower belly. Edginess assailed her without warning, and it was all sexual. Her tongue darted out to lick her lips. Throughout the day, she’d found herself daydreaming about this man, and that scared the hell out of her. Emily hadn’t thought she could trust a man again, but she wanted to trust Saber Mitchell. Deep down she knew he was worthy. Honorable. She was trying hard, but it wasn’t easy to forget and give her heart so easily again.

Emily hurried to catch up with him. “I know I can. But I want my independence, to come and go without worrying.” Why couldn’t she tell him she was just plain scared? He whirled around, his green eyes flashing with a hint of temper. “What about other men?” A gasp of surprise escaped before she could censor her reaction. “Men? What do you think I’m going to do?” “I’m not the only single male in Middlemarch.” Saber’s voice was tightly controlled, but she knew temper lurked below the surface. “I’m not worried about you so much. It’s the men. They’re going to beat a path to your door.” That was jealousy she heard in his words, saw in the flash of his eyes. “I’m not interested in racing into a relationship.” And she wasn’t. Michael had soured everything for her. But she wasn’t about to turn down a little recreational sex with Saber. As long as they were circumspect, everything would go swimmingly. Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the entire truth. She needed more time to decide what she really wanted. “What about going out with a friend?” Saber glared at her so hard, she stopped walking. Even cranky, he was sexy and jumpable. Emily’s mouth twitched with the need to laugh. “If that friend was you, I think we could come to an arrangement. A date now and then.” “Humph.” Saber’s glare darkened, and after holding open the door for her, he strode to his vehicle. Emily stared after him, once again marveling at his tight ass. Very tempting and gropable. Made a girl want to grab. A tiny grin came into play. She got the distinct feeling she hadn’t come out with the correct answer to his questions. Too bad. Her amusement faded. She refused to give up her independence just on his say-so, not when her fear of committing again was so close to the surface. No need to tempt another big mistake when time would put things in better prospective. There was no hurry to come to a decision. Emily sighed as she followed Saber. She needed time to heal. Chapter Eight
“A place to rent.” The elderly man stroked his bristled chin, his forehead creased in a frown. His brown eyes narrowed. “You’re the second person to want to rent somewhere this week. Found the other woman a place. Ain’t much else available.” “Nothing at all?” Emily asked. “Nope.” “What about a waiting list?” “Suppose I could put the word out,” the man said, but his whole expression spoke of doubt. “Thanks,” Emily said. “I’ll ring you in a few days to see if anything has turned up.”

“Greg,” Saber said from behind her. They’d separated outside. Saber had gone to check on an order of farm equipment after pointing her in the direction of the real estate agent. “Any luck with finding somewhere for Emily?” “Wish I could help. Not much available at the moment.” Saber placed his hand on her shoulder. “You know you can stay with us until something turns up.” Emily’s heart did a traitorous pitter-patter. That was the problem. The more time she spent with Saber Mitchell, the more tempted she was to go with the flow and drift into a relationship. The man pulled her, throwing out temptation with every touch, every smile. She could see it happening all too easily. “Thanks. I’ll be in touch.” Emily walked down the street at Saber’s side. They stopped several times to greet locals, and Saber introduced her to both men and women. Strange the number of people with green eyes. Hardly a common eye color, although Saber had said their ancestors had sailed to Dunedin from Scotland before settling in Middlemarch. Green was obviously a dominant gene. “How was your first full day at the café?” Saber asked once they had started back to the farm. “I loved it.” And she had. Her customers were appreciative, and Charlotte was a joy to work for. Ideas of ways she could become more efficient crammed her mind, making her eager for the next day. Almost giddy, she wanted to dance with exuberance in time to the silent music pulsing through her body. Emily hadn’t felt like this for a long, long time. “It’s my turn to cook dinner,” Saber said when they pulled up outside the house. “Wanna help?” “Sure.” Saber switched off the ignition and glanced across at her. “Do you still want to sleep in another bedroom? You can take the one we put all your bags in last night, if you want.” The bubble of exuberance burst. She stared, trying to read him. What did he want her to do? Emily was torn. She wanted her independence, yet the idea of never touching him intimately again made her want to cry. “I’m happy where I am…unless you want me to move into another bedroom?” “No.” Saber climbed from the vehicle and slammed the door. He strode toward the house, leaving Emily staring after him. “Well,” Emily muttered, “I’m glad we got that settled.” She jumped out of the SUV and hurried up the path. She stormed inside. “Saber! Saber, you can’t walk away like that.” She burst into the lounge where Leo and Felix were working on the computer. A mess of checkbooks, bank statements and invoices covered the top of the dining table. “Where did Saber go?” “I’m here. There’s no need to shout.” He carried a bottle of wine and two glasses. “I’m switching my cooking night to tomorrow night.” Felix straightened at the computer. “Why?” Saber glanced over at her, the sensual heat in his green eyes so hot, she trembled. “Emily and I are going to be busy. We’ll cook tomorrow.”

“Aw, bro. I cooked last night,” Leo said. “It’s your turn.” “Too bad.” Saber winked at her. “Please tell us you’re not going to make noise,” Felix said, rolling his eyes in a dramatic manner. “We’re too young to be exposed to that sort of activity.” Saber’s gaze never left her. “Oh, I guarantee we’ll make noise.” “Saber!” Emily finally found her voice. Self-conscious color seeped to her face and she couldn’t look at Felix or Leo for fear of what she might see. “You’re embarrassing her,” Leo said. “She’s gone the color of my favorite shirt.” “Perhaps you and Felix should go down to the pub. Have dinner down there,” Emily blurted. Saber nodded in approval. “Good idea.” “It’s too early for dinner,” Felix said, glancing at his watch. “Try afternoon tea.” Saber herded Emily from the lounge and down the passage. Not that she needed much encouragement. Her heart raced with excitement from the promise she’d seen in his eyes. Her hand trembled when she reached for the doorknob of his bedroom door and twisted it. The door creaked open. Saber strode inside, set the wine and glasses down on the bedside cabinet before going back to shut the door. “I’m glad you’re staying in Middlemarch.” Emily was glad, too. A new beginning. Challenges. “You know I want more than friendship.” Emily closed her eyes for a brief moment, fighting the sudden panic inside. She inhaled slowly, her eyes flicking open. “I don’t… I can’t give more.”Not at the moment. Please, understand. Saber prowled across the room. He smoothed his hand across her cheek. “We won’t discuss it now. Maybe later.” A slow smile crawled across his lips, turning decidedly carnal. Emily let her worry escape along with her held breath. She melted inside as his eyes caressed her face and wandered down her body over her plain blue cotton shirt and her straight black skirt, down her legs to her black leather shoes. X-ray vision. Emily could have sworn he possessed the power. Every inch of her skin tingled with heat and awareness. Her nipples tightened beneath the cups of her lacy bra. Desire stirred and he hadn’t touched her. “What do you mean telling your brothers that you’re going to make me scream?” “I believe I said we’d make noise. I didn’t specify exactly.” Saber grinned lazily and brushed a tendril of hair off her forehead. “But I spoke the truth.” His fingers entwined in her hair before he lowered his mouth to hers. Their gazes met. Held. Then he tasted her mouth, gently biting at her lips, cradling her head. Tiny kisses, tantalizingly brief. Saber lifted his head, his eyes a deep green with gold flecks that

shone in the light. “I am going to make love to you, and you will scream.” He slipped a hand beneath the neckline of her blouse and traced the edge of her lacy bra. Stealthy fingers crept lower to touch the fragrant flesh below. A low moan built at the back of her throat. He’d barely touched her, yet his words had all but seduced her already. Emily removed her glasses and placed them on the dresser. “Saber. Yes.” “Yes, what?” Saber whispered, strumming his thumb across her nipple. “Yes, you can make love to me, with me,” Emily murmured. “But I’m not a screamer. You won’t make me scream.” “Ah.” Saber removed his hand and deftly undid the buttons on her shirt. He bent his head and pressed a kiss in her cleavage. “A challenge.” His warm breath brought a shiver. Anticipation. “Perhaps I can make you shout out with pleasure,” she purred. “I’m sure you can, kitten.” He grinned and stepped away to calmly unbutton his dark green shirt. The soft cotton peeled away from his chest, revealing his beautifully sculpted chest. The shirt settled on the floor in the corner of the bedroom. Saber removed his faded jeans and cast them aside. He stood proudly naked in front of her, his erection proclaiming his readiness to make love. Emily studied his body and licked her lips to ease the dry sensation. “Would you like a glass of red wine?” Emily nodded and watched him stride across the room to where he’d left it. He deftly opened the bottle and poured the ruby liquid into the two glasses. She inhaled deeply and let out her breath with a soft whoosh. If there was ever a man sent to tempt her, it was Saber. But the idea of going through the same pain that Michael had put her through… The betrayal cut deep, and he was still reaching out from the grave to hurt her, driving a wedge between her and Maggie.Forget Michael , she told herself sternly. He was gone. Saber returned and handed her a glass. “A toast. To the future and friendship.” Emily lifted her glass. “To the future and friendship.” She took a mouthful of the red wine and let it trickle down her throat. It wasn’t possible to control the future, but she could control her present. Live each day as it came and wring everything from it. She lifted her glass again. “To all our todays.” Saber set his glass down, propped a pillow up against the headboard and sprawled comfortably on the bed, at ease with his nakedness and his raging erection. “You ready to scream?” “I’m ready for some of the hot sex you’ve promised me.” What would it be like waking up beside this man every morning? Having his baby? Emily froze in horror, her hand tightening around the wine glass. Where had that come from? She wasn’t ready to trust again. She couldn’t. But once the idea had slid stealthily into her mind, it wasn’t so easy to dislodge. Emily took a healthy swig of wine, gulping it down before drinking another mouthful. A baby.Their baby. Saber jumped up off the bed in one lithe move. He took the almost empty glass from her and set it aside.

“What’s wrong?” Emily’s chin shot upward. “I don’t want to talk about it.” And she didn’t. The way her thoughts were running would scare him to death. He might think he wanted her to live with him, but they hadn’t known each other long enough. No, it was best she set up her own base and maintain her autonomy while she came to inner peace with herself. Conscious she was killing the mood, Emily forced a smile. Her fingers wandered across his chest, down his belly and curled around his engorged cock. The faint worry left his face, replaced by intense awareness. Emily glanced down. She loosened her grip, running one finger from the thick base to the purplish tip. “You’re very big.” “Tell me more,” Saber said, his tone lazy and all male. “It’s good for my ego.” A snort escaped. She’d never met a more secure male. Her thumb massaged the crown while her other hand fondled his balls, testing their weight. She squeezed lightly, enjoying the intimacy and the soft groan she wrung from him. When she repeated the move, he clasped her hands, holding them still. “I like that very much, but I want to touch you, too.” He removed her shirt and reached behind to flick the clasp of her bra. Emily toed off her shoes while Saber unzipped her skirt, skimming it down her hips with an expertise that made her blink. Her lacy panties were next. Leaving her clothes where they fell, he scooped her off her feet and laid her on the bed, following her down. He trailed his hand from her collarbone to her pelvis in one long, uninterrupted move. Emily sighed and parted her legs without being asked. Saber kissed his way across her stomach. He skimmed his lips over her hipbone and nipped her thigh. His stubble rasped against the delicate skin of her inner thighs, his breath moist and arousing as it washed across her sensitive vulva. Heat arrowed through her body. “Kiss me, Saber.” “Where would you like me to kiss you?” A waft of warm air accompanied each word, puffing against her feminine folds. “Don’t tease,” she pleaded. In response, Saber parted her folds and ran his tongue against her swollen flesh. He pressed a gentle kiss on her clitoris and the tiny bundle of nerves jumped. “Like that?” “Yeah.” Emily trembled when he added a finger to the equation, stroking her flesh, teasing with light, flicking movements, pushing her higher. Saber sucked lightly, brushing his tongue across her sensitive bud. Emily squeezed her eyes closed to concentrate on the building pleasure. A surge of wetness spoke of her arousal. Sensation shimmered just beyond her grasp. “Come for me, kitten.” Saber licked, fingers pumping into her pussy, then he removed his finger and used his tongue. The rasp of his tongue when it traveled the length of her cleft brought a shiver. “Do that again,” she pleaded, loving the contrasting roughness and wet suction of his mouth. His tongue brushed against her clit and curled around the base in that strange way he had. His mouth caressed the top and without warning, she exploded, the exquisite sensation pulling her breasts tight and sending the blush of pleasure through every inch of her body. Finally, Saber lifted his head. His green eyes glittered as he swiped his tongue across his lips. “Like that?”

“Yeah. Exactly like that.” Saber moved up the bed and kissed her deeply. Emily tasted her juices on his mouth when their tongues swirled together. Her hands laced in his short, dark hair. Saber loved the way she responded to him—openly and without reserve. As always, the feline part of him jostled for control, but Saber wasn’t worried about starting to shift as he had the first time they were together. Just being with her helped him to focus. The worst that might happen would be the change of his teeth for the enzyme exchange. Saliva to blood. Craving for his mate rippled through him, but Saber wanted a willing mate. A little more time… He feasted on her mouth and pushed his shaft into her tight, silken sheath. She clasped him with warm, comforting heat. His mate. Saber thrust again, taking them both higher. Hunger lengthened his teeth, but he kept his mouth closed, concentrating instead on pounding into her receptive body and the clinging heat that drove him into a frenzy. Then suddenly, Emily groaned. He felt the wave of rhythmic pulses deep in her womb. He angled the stroke, thrusting hard and deep. Emily gripped his shoulders tightly, arching into his thrust. Without warning she screamed. Loudly. A clear scream that his brothers would hear since they hadn’t left yet. Not bothering to hide his victorious grin, Saber pistoned his hips, fought the need to bite then convulsed with the force of his own release. Damned if he didn’t feel like shouting too, but he kept the need bottled deep in his chest, grunting instead. Saber took her mouth in a hungry kiss, guaranteed to keep their pulse rates high. Finally, he gentled the kiss and propped up on his elbows to stare down at her. Her swollen lips and sensual glow gave him a great deal of satisfaction. Knowledge that he could make her scream made him feel like a king. A smug king. “I made you scream.” “Did not,” she said with quiet dignity. “Hmm, must need my hearing checked.” “Good idea. Get the doctor to prick your ego while you’re there.” Saber chuckled, loving her feistiness even if he didn’t appreciate her stubbornness quite as much. They lay quietly together, neither speaking. Cuddled against each other. Exactly where he wanted her—at his side. Saber gave a wry smile. Maybe that was the way to ensure she stayed. Keep her very busy in his bed. ***** The days passed, autumn sliding stealthily away to give way to the approaching winter. The bright orange and yellow leaves on the poplar trees near the café were almost gone, leaving skeleton fingers brushing the sky. Emily breathed deeply, inhaling the crisp, cool air as she studied the fresh coating of snow on the distant mountains and hills. She took a sip of her coffee, enjoying the slice of peace and quiet before the lunch rush started. She loved living at Middlemarch, enjoyed her job and had made lots of new friends. Michael’s parents seemed okay with her decision to stay in Middlemarch, and although Maggie wasn’t talking to her yet, Emily was confident she would soon. They both needed time and space to put things in perspective. She’d even purchased a small car to travel to and from work. Things were going well with Saber, too. Emily grimaced. Or they would be until she imparted her news tonight. Greg had contacted her today about a house available for rent. She’d told him she’d take it and had signed a contract for six months. For the first time, she wasn’t looking forward to seeing Saber.

***** “You’re doing what?” Saber roared. His brothers stared at her with clear horror before, almost as one, the four of them leapt to their feet. “I’m going to the pub,” Leo said. “Me too,” Felix muttered, grabbing his coat off the back of his chair. Joe and Sly exchanged a glance. “We’re going to Dunedin for the weekend. Forgot to tell you,” Sly said. “We have a date.” Like rats on a foundering ship, they scuttled for cover until only Saber remained in the room with her. The tension seemed to suck the oxygen from the room, and she had trouble breathing. Emily’s insides quivered but she forged ahead, committed to her course of action. “I said, I’ve rented a furnished house. I’m moving some of my gear tonight and will pick up the rest on the weekend.” “What about us?” Saber demanded. “We’re friends. I told you I don’t want a permanent relationship at the moment. It’s too soon.”Please understand, I need more time to think, to make sure I don’t make a mistake. Emily’s eyes were pleading.I want to be very sure. “Newsflash. We’ve been living together and sleeping in the same bed. If that isn’t a relationship, I don’t know what is.” “I want my independence.” Anger bubbled through her. Saber was big and in this mood appeared intimidating, but she wasn’t frightened of him. Funny, Michael had scared her to death at times, so much so that she’d given in to him rather than starting another fight. But this was too important. She refused to budge. “I want to do what I want, when I want. Make my own decisions. My own mistakes.” “Moving out is a mistake. What about us? What we have together is good.” Emily softened an instant. “I like you very much, but I want my independence. We’ll still see each other.” I want to look closely before I leap into a commitment. Emily took one last look at Saber and left the room. Living on her own really was the best thing. Chapter Nine
Saber spent a miserable night roving through the empty house. It seemed his brothers had all found alternative accommodation for the night. His upper lip curled. Cowards. Every room in the house smelled of Emily—flowers and a hint of vanilla. It would take weeks, months for the smell to disperse and, meantime, he’d go quietly mad. Dammit, Emily was his fated mate. It wasn’t meant to end like this. In the darkness of his bedroom, he shucked his clothes, padded naked down the passage and let himself outside. The cool bite of the wind rippled across his skin before he summoned the feline and shifted. He

bounded away from the house, trying to outrun his problems. The wind rattled the empty branches of the trees planted by his parents and grandparents. There was even an old oak tree planted by his great-grandfather soon after they’d settled in Middlemarch. In a more playful mood, he might have leapt into the high branches and watched the stars, but tonight he was too disturbed to do anything but run. His tail swished with agitation when he had to slow and hide while a vehicle passed. Once the glow of the headlights faded, he increased his speed, loping over the open tussock land and heading upward into the hills where there was less chance of meeting up with humans. Emily. What the hell was he going to do? A part of him had died when she’d walked out the door tonight. They belonged together. A shaft of pain pierced his heart at the thought. He loved her. Saber growled. The pained cry silenced the call of a nearby night bird. He loved her. This was more than a mate. This was love, and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. There had to be a way to convince her he was trustworthy, that he trusted her. Somehow, he had to let her know that together they were stronger, but they could still retain their own identities. Being together didn’t spell the end. Saber slowed, trotting in a wide circle before heading back for the house. Perhaps he’d climb a tree and watch the stars while he concocted a plan to convince Emily Scarlet once and for all they were meant to be together. ***** Several days later, Saber marched up the steps that lead to the house Emily was renting. When no one answered his knock on the door, he strode around the side of the house to the back. A lone figure sat hunched up on a wooden bench. “Emily.” Her head jerked up and her forehead puckered. “You came.” Wonderment and a touch of confusion flitted across her face. “Yeah. You’re coming with me.” Her brown eyes widened a fraction behind her glasses lenses. “Come on, kitten. Maybe we don’t know each other well, but we’re good together. I need you. After the few weeks together, we have something to build on.” “I don’t want a man. They’re more trouble than they’re worth.” He held out his hand. “Please. Spend time with me.” “No, it’s not a good idea,” Emily said, but her voice lacked conviction. Saber took heart from her uncertainty. “I really do need you, Emily Scarlet.” He didn’t analyze further. He acted. Saber scooped her off her

feet, placing her over his shoulder, and walked down the side of the house, past the gaping neighbor who was weeding her garden and out to his vehicle. “What are you doing? Put me down.” Emily kicked. She screeched loud enough that the shoppers inside the small grocery store down the road spilled outside to stare. Friends and neighbors gaped as he stuffed her in the passenger seat of the SUV and locked the door. Thankfully, they were so surprised they didn’t interfere. One of the elders appeared in the doorway of the store. Saber ignored his smirk and stomped around to the driver’s door. The feminine outrage nearly deafened him when he climbed behind the wheel. “I want to show you something.” “It will need to be pretty good to make up for kidnapping me.” Her glare was black enough to rival a thundercloud. Saber started up the vehicle and hoped he wasn’t making the biggest mistake of his life. He glanced across at her set face then continued driving toward the farm anyway. Emily couldn’t go through life without trusting a man again. And dammit, he wanted to be the one she trusted. The sealed road gave way to gravel when he turned off the main. A neighbor drove his tractor out of his driveway in front of him, and Saber slowed to a crawl until the farmer turned into the paddock he intended to plow for crops. “Where are we going?” Emily demanded. Saber continued up the gravel road, past the family homestead, across the broad plains and up into the hills that surrounded the valley. He pulled up beside a huge pile of rocks that looked as though a giant had flattened and stacked them in a neat pile. He yanked on the handbrake and switched off the ignition. “We’re here.” He opened the door and headed around the front of the SUV to open the door for Emily. When she didn’t move, he said, “Humor me.” Emily muttered and ignored his helping hand to clamber from the vehicle. Now the moment of truth had arrived, Saber’s stomach roiled with apprehension. If this plan backfired on him, his brothers would suffer. Still, their ancestors had relocated from Scotland. They could start over again if they had to. He took her by the hand and led her over to a handy rock. “Sit there and watch.” Saber unlaced his boots and kicked them aside before rapidly stripping down to bare skin. “What…what are you doing?” “Watch.” He took heart from the fact her gaze lingered on his body. Taking a deep breath, he summoned the feline part of him from inside. A fine mist swirled around him. His senses, already better than the average human, intensified. He smelled the green grass and the touch of coming winter in the air. The leaves of the poplar trees near the township no longer glowed with brilliant oranges and yellow but stood stark and bare. And he smelled Emily’s familiar scent. Flowers. Vanilla. A hint of musk.

The scent of his woman. The thought pleased him even if she didn’t understand yet. Saber’s jaw reformed. His spine lengthened, and he dropped to his hands and knees. His skin prickled and a dense, black fur formed. The last thing he did before he changed was to look at Emily to gauge her reaction. A family tale handed down through the generations told of a human woman who had frozen in terror and turned into rock, so great was her fear. His tail swished in agitation. She hadn’t run. Yet. Only one way to find out if she’d accept his…differences. He padded across the tussock and rocks that separated them to nudge her knee.
Emily stared. Her throat worked but not a sound emerged. She couldn’t have run if she’d tried—her body seemed frozen to the rock where Saber had instructed she sit before he did his amazing change. Her breath eased out with a soft hiss. Well, that explained the mysterious black cats that stalked the Middlemarch town, appearing on whim. The cats the female reporter wanted to write about. The cat—Saber—stalked toward her, closing the distance between them. Her mind groped for understanding. Why had he shown her this? What did he hope to gain from letting her in on this huge secret? Her frenzied thoughts came to a sudden halt when he nudged her jeans-clad knee. His mouth opened to reveal sharp, white teeth. All the better to eat you with, my dear. Emily let out a strangled laugh. Gallows humor. He wasn’t going to eat her. Was he? The big cat rubbed against her thigh, letting out a rough purr. His breath was warm even through the jeans she wore. While Emily wondered frantically what to do, how to react, his pink tongue flickered out to lick across the back of her trembling hand. It tickled and a chuckle slipped out. In that moment, she knew he wouldn’t hurt her—she had nothing to fear. The thought had barely formed when Saber knocked her off the rock as easily as she’d swipe at a pesky fly. A startled squeak emerged and she attempted to scramble away. His soft growl made her still. Saber placed his solid bulk in front of her and whirled away with a snarl, his tail lashing her across the face. Emily held her breath, aware of the leashed power in him. All the better to eat you with, my dear. Realization arrived along with common sense. Saber could kill her, hurt her, do anything he wanted to her at any time, yet he’d asked her to come with him before he’d acted macho and overbearing. In front of her, Saber relaxed. He turned around to face her, his feline features seeming to smile. His tongue rasped across her cheek before he prowled away from her and let out an abrupt bark. Instantly, two more black cats galloped around the outcropping of rocks below where Saber had parked the SUV. A shimmer appeared around the cat. Emily blinked, and when she focused again, Saber, the man, stood in front of her. A naked man. She stood for a better look and closed the distance between them. The two cats headed straight for them, screeching to a stop at the last possible minute. Saber cursed and grabbed for her. But too late. One of the cats didn’t stop soon enough, knocking her off her feet. Emily landed on

her butt. “Dammit, Felix! Watch out.” Saber rushed to her side and ran his hands over her ribs and arms and legs. “Where does it hurt? Nothing broken?” “My dignity.” Emily forced a laugh when what she really wanted to do was take a bite of his naked body. His chest. His butt. She wasn’t particularly fussy. He looked good all over. She’d missed him so much, more than she’d ever thought she would. “I’m fine.” Saber helped Emily to her feet and held her against his body in a protective manner. He glanced past her and cursed fluidly. “Felix. Leo. Dammit, where are your clothes?” Emily peeked around him. Leo and Felix stood in front of them as naked as Saber and just as impressive. She sighed her appreciation. “Don’t look,” Saber muttered, slapping his hands across her eyes so she couldn’t see. “Party pooper,” Emily muttered. Saber foiled Emily’s attempt to sneak a look and tugged her so she stood facing his chest. “What are you two doing here anyway? Were you following us?” he demanded. Leo snorted. “Don’t flatter yourself, big brother. We came out to shift the yearlings. We didn’t have time earlier because the reporter was driving down our road, searching for clues. Or so she said. She’s turning into a big pain in the butt. I never know where the damned woman will pop up next. We had to wait until school finished and she went to pick up her kid.” Emily wriggled, trying to escape Saber’s grasp. The brothers muttered about the reporter so often these days, she was tired of the conversation. Although to be fair, she understood why they tried to avoid her now. She’d do the same, given the circumstances. “You can let me go now.” “Yeah, let her look, Saber,” Felix said. “She might prefer one of us to a sour puss like you.” “Too bad. She’s landed with me, and I’m not letting her go.” Saber’s words rang loud and clear, bringing a rush of indignation before she started to think clearly. She wanted the same thing he did. “We’ll meet you back at the house,” Saber said. “Take care, huh?” The two men shifted to cats and raced off, soon out of sight. Saber placed his hands on her shoulders and turned her to face him. “Are you frightened?” “No.”Intrigued, yes, but not scared. “Is it just you and your brothers, or are there others?” “There are a few of us here in Middlemarch.” “Do you live for longer than humans? Do you change at will or does the moon have something to do with your changing?” Emily paused to take a breath. “Oh, stupid question—you’ve changed now so I guess the moon doesn’t have much to do with it. I’ve noticed people tend to have big families here in Middlemarch. Are they like you? Do your women have more than one—do they have litters?” she

finished with a horrified squeak. “You don’t mind me asking questions, do you?” A gust of wind made Saber shiver. He reached for his jeans and pulled them on. “How about sitting in the SUV out of the wind?” Emily followed Saber, looking at him through new eyes, her mind working furiously. What did this all mean? Once they were inside the cab of the SUV, Saber started to answer her questions. “Our ancestors came from Scotland in search of a better life, a new life. We came with friends and servants, men and women who were loyal to us and kept our secret. The ship berthed at Dunedin. I’ve mentioned that to you before, and our ancestors settled in Middlemarch. As I said, there’s a few of us. Most are young, single males. That’s part of the reason for the Middlemarch ball. The elders were worried about some of the behavior of the males, taking chances and risking discovery. They hoped finding mates would help us settle.” “Mates? Is that something special?” Wariness hit her then. What exactly was a mate? Was that why she felt so horrid after being apart from Saber? Why she felt as if her heart had been ripped out without anesthesia? Emily squeezed against the door, her eyes wide with apprehension. Had he done something to her? “I’m not sure I can explain. You’re my fated mate. I feel it in my gut, knew it the first time I looked at you. It’s a sense of rightness and awareness.” Emily opened her mouth to hotly refute the claim. “There’s a second step to the process. Almost a bonding if you will. I bite you and draw blood, letting the special enzymes in my saliva flow into your body through your blood.” “These enzymes—they’re not transferable through having sex?” Emily heard the accusation in her voice. He had to have done something to her. She couldn’t have fallen in love with him. Could she? “I haven’t completed the second step. That’s the truth. I’ve wanted to, but I needed you to choose me freely without any coercion.” Pride and arrogance shaded his words, and Emily believed him. “Well, what if two…um…creatures like you want to mate?” Saber smiled briefly. “Cats. We’re feline shifters. If two cats wish to mate, they will bite each other and the exchange goes both ways. And your other questions—life expectancy is slightly longer than a human. It’s the enzyme, so if we were to mate, you would live for a similar length of time to me. Children can arrive in multiples. Two or three is common, but no more than that at once, and if we were to have children, they would have the ability to change like I do, but you would retain your human characteristics and wouldn’t be able to change. Any other questions?” Emily scowled. They had litters. That sounded exhausting. “You’ve given me a great deal of power,” she said finally. “What if I run to the press? Or tell all to that female reporter that’s skulking around?” Saber’s hands cupped her face and stared deeply into her eyes. “I trust you.” An ache started in her chest and welled up her throat. Emily swallowed. She knew what he was trying to do. “I trusted Michael.”

“I know, kitten.” “We hardly know each other. How do we know what we feel will last?” Her voice held every bit of the uncertainty she felt. “I knew Michael for five years before we married.” Emily sucked in a deep breath and looked him straight in the eye, firmly facing both him and her fears. “I’m sorry, Saber, but I’m scared.” “Ah, kitten.” Saber kissed her, their lips moving together in a slow, seductive dance. She leaned into his muscular body, her heart pounding erratically. Her nipples peaked against the cotton T-shirt and woolen jersey she wore. Too many clothes. She wanted to get closer, to take him inside her body. She wanted…Saber. Saber pulled away, his green eyes bright, the pupils barely visible in the winter gloom. “Nothing is certain in this life, kitten. I showed you my true identity because I didn’t want any lies or pretence between us. All I want is the chance to take our relationship further. We can go as slow as you want.” “What if we’re not compatible?” “We’re compatible. Have faith, kitten.” He traced her lips with his thumb. “I know we’re destined. I can handle a wait.” “But how long will you wait?” “As long as it takes. One month should do it,” he added in a casual tone. “One month?” “Yeah.” His grin was slow. Sexy. Confident. “I figure one more month to make sure you’re fully addicted to my lovemaking. And if you have any doubts after that, I’m going to drag you to the altar kicking and screaming. You belong to me, and I don’t intend to give any other man the opportunity.” Emily’s mouth dropped open. Of all the conceited, arrogant— “And, of course, there’s the fact that I love you. That’s got to count in my favor.” She went all mushy inside and struggled to keep it from spilling out into a dopey grin. He loved her! She had a sneaking suspicion she returned the emotion but wasn’t ready to admit it. Not yet. Although Saber could act bossy and arrogant, he didn’t make her feel vulnerable and weak. When Emily stood up for what she wanted or stated her point of view, he listened—even if he didn’t agree. It was the big difference between him and Michael. “Okay. Let’s see how it goes. Take each day one at a time.” Being needed and wanted was addictive. Loved. Emily pressed her body up against him and wound her arms around his neck. She’d been so lonely without Saber. He’d sneaked into her heart and filled the empty spaces, brushed away the hurt she’d suffered at Michael’s hands. Emily glanced at him with a trace of shyness. Dare she admit it? “I’ll stay. I’ll move back in with you starting tonight.” She sucked in a deep breath before blurting, “I…I’ve missed you and your brothers. But mostly you.” Saber’s eyes glowed and as she watched, they changed shape. Just a fraction, but they made him appear more cat-like. He issued a soft, satisfied purr that stabbed through Emily to the depths of her soul. Saber cupped her face in his hands and smiled. “Can we cement this momentous occasion back at the house? In my bedroom?”

“Good plan.” Curious about the changes in him, she raised her fingers to touch the corners of his eyes. “Does it hurt?” Saber moved away to start the SUV and head for home. “Does shifting hurt? Not really. A little discomfort at first, but there are compensations.” “Oh, yeah?” “Enhanced senses for one.” “During sex?” Saber purred loudly and stepped on the accelerator. He glanced across the interior of the vehicle. His grin was smug and his wink suggestive enough that her breasts tightened to hard nubs. Emily took that as a yes. Dust trailed behind them as they sped down the gravel road. Five minutes later, they pulled up outside the house. They climbed from the SUV and hurried up the concrete path to the front door. “Ah, Saber and Emily,” Felix said, meeting them in the entrance. “Oh, you’re back from shifting the stock. You should know,” Emily said, “that we’re going to make noise in the bedroom.” “Again?” Leo said, appearing from the direction of the kitchen. Saber stepped up beside her and curled his arm around her waist. “I hear they do a very good meal at the pub. The café, too.” He propelled Emily toward his bedroom and kicked his shoes off just inside the door. Their bedroom, she thought with a sense of satisfaction. The door shut behind them with a satisfying clunk. Real privacy at last. Emily smiled and teasingly licked her lips. “Let me undress you. I need to study you more closely than I have. See if I’ve missed any feline-type clues.” A laugh escaped him. His eyes glowed brightly, the gold flecks mesmerizing. Beautiful. “Have at it, kitten. You won’t make me scream.” “But I might make you purr,” she countered, stepping closer to unbutton the shirt he’d hastily donned after his earlier demonstration. Emily slid her hands beneath, savoring the warmth of him, the musky scent combined with the green fresh smells of the outdoors. Smoothing the shirt down his arms, she let it fall away. Glancing up at him, she grinned. “So far, you appear human. No differences I can see.” Deftly, she unbuckled the belt at his waist and popped open the snap fastening on his faded jeans. The zipper whined down at the slightest touch of her fingertips. Denim parted to reveal his erection. Satin smooth and tempting. Emily slid his jeans down his legs and silently indicated by touch that he should step out of them. Very cooperative, he did as she wanted and

kicked them out of the way. Then Emily gave into temptation and touched. She ran a delicate finger the length of his arousal before kneeling in front of him. “For closer inspection?” His voice was husky. Full of heat. Promise. Love. Emily smiled before she repeated the journey of her finger with her lips. When she reached the swollen crown, her tongue darted out to lick delicately across the head. Saber shuddered, his hands threading through her hair. Her breasts felt tight. Achy. And her juices flowed in arousal, but Emily had no intention of hurrying. This time was special. She gripped his thighs and took his cock deeper into her mouth, swirling her tongue across the head to taste the bead of pre-cum that had gathered. His salty taste filled her mouth. Saber groaned, the sound a deep grumble in his chest. She heard his breath, deep and unsteady. His hips jerked when she licked and fondled his tight balls at the same time. “God, Emily. Do that again.” She smiled around his cock and obeyed the instruction. Shouldn’t be much longer until she had him purring. Emily took more inside her mouth and sucked, her cheeks hollowing as she licked and caressed him. More pre-cum leaked from the tiny slit at the end of his cock. Saber trembled violently. “Enough,” he said, removing his shaft from her mouth and bending to lift her in one easy move. Saber unbuttoned her blouse and slid it off her shoulders. He slipped her bra straps down her arms and leaned forward to press his lips to her cleavage. “You smell good. Fresh and summery. Good enough to eat,” he added in a husky voice. His tongue flicked out and slid across her warm skin. Rough. Abrasive. It slid beneath the cup of her bra to caress the plump curve of one breast. Too many clothes. She wanted her bare skin brushing against him so she could feel every sensation. Savor it. Celebrate. Emily threaded her hands through Saber’s dark hair and cradled him closer to her chest. “Pity we can’t think these pesky clothes away. They’re standing in the way of progress.” “Don’t worry, kitten. I’ll have your clothes off soon enough.” He nuzzled the upper slope of her breast with his mouth this time and peeled away one lacy blue cup. Emily’s heart went pitter-patter, the blush of arousal crawling down her neck to color the curves of her breasts. Her clothes felt like a yoke. Definitely unwanted. She was done with waiting and patience. Emily struggled with the button fly on her jeans, grunting with irritation when she fumbled. Her huff of impatience brought a chuckle from Saber. “Let me, kitten.” Saber undid the buttons on her jeans. Competently, with not a trace of fumbling. He tugged them down her legs, taking her panties with them. Emily unhooked her bra, and seconds later they fell on the bed, their naked limbs entwining with the intimacy of lovers. She undulated against Saber, enjoying the press of his cock against her stomach. Emily nibbled Saber’s earlobe, and when he didn’t protest at the ticklish sensation, she explored the inner shell of his ear with her tongue. Saber groaned, a harsh sound full of need. He grasped her upper arms and turned her before she could blink. An instant later he was between her parted legs and thrusting deep into her womb before she’d stopped bouncing on the mattress. “I wasn’t finished with my examination. I was checking for pointy ears.”

“Later. Right now I have other things on my mind.” “You haven’t purred for me yet.” Emily tried for righteous indignation but a gurgle of laughter spilled over and spoiled the effect. “You wanted feline,” he muttered. “I’ll give you feline.” He pulled back and plunged deep again. Emily groaned, her eyes sliding shut to savor the intense feeling of rightness that filled her body when she was with Saber. “Open your eyes,” he ordered. “Watch.” Emily forced her eyes open. A shimmer of light glowed around him. A soft golden luminosity that made her blink in astonishment. She caught the devilment in his eyes. He smirked at her, and she couldn’t help but notice the sharp white teeth gleaming in his mouth. She gulped as reality enforced itself. Yep, sharp and white and capable of inflicting great harm—if he wanted. Emily traced her fingers across his cheek, mentally refuting the idea he might hurt her. In that moment, she realized she trusted him implicitly. A light coating of fur had appeared on his chest, and he appeared to flash from the man she knew to a different Saber. Fascinated, she ran her fingers across his chest then tugged experimentally at the fur. She giggled at his wince and soothed him with a lingering kiss on the lips. Tongues twirled together in a slow mating. Inside her womb, his cock filled her even more than he had before. Emily frowned as a thought occurred. “Every other time, you told me to close my eyes or made me face a tree.” “Yeah.” He thrust smoothly, angling slightly so he rubbed against her clitoris each time he moved. “Didn’t want to scare you.” “You’re not so scary.” Emily ran her hands across the soft hair that had appeared on his back and chest. It felt smooth. Soft. Sort of sexy now that she that knew his secret. “And the way you fill me is excellent. Top marks.” She wondered if he’d force the issue and do the enzyme thing he’d spoken about. Panic touched her for an instant before common sense reasserted itself. He hadn’t completed the process yet. He’d refrained because she hadn’t given her agreement. Emily realized she believed in him and stopped worrying. “Definitely top marks for sexual performance.” “Glad you approve.” Saber thrust again and kissed her neck, his rough tongue swirling and teasing her neck while he lightly pinched one nipple. Emily groaned and forgot her questions. She forgot about the differences between human and feline shifters as they moved together in perfect harmony. A light shimmered around him again, golden and dazzling, as he continued to thrust, brushing her sensitive nub with each plunging move. The sensation built slowly. Her nerve endings vibrated in exquisite pleasure. Their mouths met, satisfaction coursed through her body. Saber swept her under into a private place where pleasure ruled. Her climax exploded through her. Control shattered and she shuddered helplessly, dimly aware that Saber had gained release, too. Minutes later, he kissed her gently on the lips and withdrew, rearranging their bodies so they were as close as they could possibly be. Emily smiled sleepily and hugged her lover tight. That had felt good. Very good. Damned if they hadn’t both purred.

Chapter Ten One Month Later
“Will you marry me?” Saber nuzzled at her neck, stroking his rough tongue over her pulse point. He pinched her nipple in the way he knew she liked. Her slim body arched against him, brushing the tip of his erection. Saber bit back a groan of pure need. Each time with Emily was better than the time before. They were a couple, a mated pair. He wished she would accept it, too. “Yes,” she whispered, staring up at him and parting her legs with an impatient invitation. “Too bad. I’ll ask you— Did you say ‘yes’?” He gripped her naked shoulders and stared down at her with shock. He’d asked her every day for four weeks. Every time she’d said no. “Yes.” Her grin lit up her face. “When?” he demanded. “Tomorrow?” “Yes.” “I love you, kitten.” Saber didn’t give her a chance to reciprocate. He bent over her relaxed body and kissed her hard on the lips, putting everything he felt for her into his kiss. His Scarlet woman. “Love you, too,” Emily murmured when their lips parted. “You want to make love to celebrate? We can do the enzyme exchange if you want.” “Oh, kitten.I want . I get to choose the position.” Feline genes clamored for him to take her from behind, to bite, to seal their love in the traditional way, now, before she changed her mind. Emily rolled her eyes, but the twinkle he saw told him she was eager to have him. “If you must,” she said with a put-upon sigh. “It’s a feline thing.” “If you say so.” Emily turned over and knelt on her hands and knees. “You going to do that freaky half-change thing when you bite me?” Saber suppressed a grin at her calm acceptance of the way he sometimes shimmered between human and cat. “Do you mind?” “No. It makes me hot,” she admitted. Saber ran his hand across her naked buttocks. Smooth, sexy skin.Mine , his mind screamed. His body prickled with sexual and feline awareness. His senses intensified so he could hear the anxious thud of her heart and the tweet of a sparrow in the oak tree outside. He smelled her piquant arousal and the lavender scent of her hair. His mate.

Saber pumped his cock once, suppressing the shiver that came from his touch. He pressed a kiss to the base of Emily’s spine and fitted his cock to her entrance. Slowly, he pushed inside while his feline senses ran riot. His body shimmered as he buried himself deep. Saber covered Emily and nuzzled her neck. With one finger, he parted her folds, teasing her bud to prominence. Her folds were slippery, and each touch, each stroke, brought a corresponding shudder from Emily. His tongue flickered out to taste her fragrant skin while he thrust in slow, even strokes. Emily sighed, and he felt her inner muscles clench as if she didn’t want him to pull out. Good.It was time. On his next thrust, he bit the fleshy part between shoulder and neck. Blood welled in his mouth and he lapped it delicately with his tongue, savoring her taste and her trust. Instead of fighting his demand for capitulation, she sighed again and pushed back against his body, deepening the penetration and giving him easier access to her neck. Not a sign of a struggle or a single peep of protest. A wonder since Saber knew his teeth were bloody sharp. He was humbled by her complete faith, her love when he’d almost given up on the idea of finding the perfect female for him—a mate for life. He let go to study his bite then licked across the red marks he’d left with his canines—four distinct puncture marks that let his saliva mingle with her blood. He continued to lick, compelled by his feline genes, while he loved her. A tiny ripple in her pussy grasped his cock, driving away everything but the feel of her gloving his cock, her lithe body beneath him. She was almost there. Saber circled her clit with a delicate finger at the same time he thrust. She exploded with a cry, tensing as waves of pleasure pulsed through her womb. Saber withdrew almost to his tip and plunged deep, his body shimmering in a ghostly manner. The pleasure. The sensations. They roiled inside him, gathering momentum with each thrust. The climax crashed over him. He groaned as he poured his love into her womb, spasms jerking his cock for long moments afterward. Saber toppled them both to the mattress, drawing Emily into the shelter of his arms. He cuddled her back against his chest, their bodies still joined. A profound sense of peace and well-being flowed through Saber, and his arms tightened around her. His mate. He couldn’t get past how lucky he was to have Emily, to love Emily and to have that emotion returned. He nuzzled her hair, a purr of contentment escaping. She pressed back against his chest, her rounded ass rubbing suggestively against his groin. He wanted her again, but first he needed to examine the bite site on her neck. Saber wanted to check she’d stopped bleeding. Propping up on one elbow, he studied the puncture marks and touched them gently with his fingers. Her cunt pulsed in reaction to his touch and he smiled with a wealth of silent satisfaction. Already the blood had clotted. They would heal to barely noticeable scars but would always be sensitive to his touch and give her great pleasure when he caressed them while they made love, arousing and propelling pheromones through her veins, giving her the desire to mate with him. Only with him. The thought brought great contentment. “We are mated.” Emily turned in his arms to face him. “You nibbled on my neck. Is that it?” “Yeah, the enzymes sedate against pain. You shouldn’t feel much apart from a need to stay with me.” “I feel that already,” she confessed. “I did before today. I hated living alone.”

“But you were too stubborn to admit it.” “Hey, you have weaknesses, too! Go on, own up.” Saber’s grin was rueful. “And you’re going to list them?” “I’ll save it until you do something to really piss me off.” Emily reached up to kiss him tenderly and rub foreheads. “Saber, I do love you. Lots.” “It’s mutual, kitten. You are my mate and I love you.” A sense of completeness filled him. It was done. He and Emily belonged together for the rest of their natural lives. His Scarlet woman. Neither of them would ever be alone again. Author Note
Writers receive inspiration from many sources. One of my favorite places to look for interesting story ideas is theNew Zealand Herald . Two years ago, a small headline caught my attention,Panther sighted again . Evidently, several people living in the Mid-Canterbury area of the South Island had sighted a mystery cat, a large black creature with a tail the same length as its body. Around the same time, a small town called Middlemarch came to my notice in a blaze of publicity. Middlemarch is a real town, situated not far from Dunedin, in the South Island of New Zealand. It seems Middlemarch had a problem—plenty of men, but a shortage of young women of marriageable age. The men of the area were having trouble meeting potential partners. Their solution was to hold an annual dance to bring women to the district. A train, dubbed the “love train”, runs from Dunedin bringing women to attend the dance and returning them home afterward. Romances have bloomed as a direct result of couples meeting during the Middlemarch singles dance. Using writer’s license, I moved the mystery cat a little farther south, planting him firmly in Middlemarch and played a little with the geography of the town.Scarlet Woman is the result. You can visit Middlemarch on the web and read about the dance at http://www.middlemarch.co.nz.
