SACRIFICE
Chapter One
A bloodied battlefield lay before the God of War. His bounty had been plenty, gold, women, cattle, and control of Thessaly, an eastern Greek region. Their fate had been sealed. It was time for him to claim his conquest in person. Ares jumped off the cloud and landed several feet in front of a large wooden structure. Embers smoldered and the pungent fumes of burning wood and flesh were thick in the air. A breeze carried the smell of death and burning flesh towards him. He inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with what he considered the scents and aromas of success. He walked forward, stepping over body parts, as he surveyed the area. Everything was just as it should be. A quick explosion, followed by pink smoke billowing around Ares, made him turn to see his half sister, a smug look on her face. “What brings you here? This is a battlefield, not the kind of place prissy women like you belong.” Aphrodite stepped forward, waving her hands to cause a gust of wind to blow soot and ash away from her large cream-colored dress. Wind blew her strawberry blond curls over her shoulders, exposing her bodice. She put both hands on her hips and cocked her head to the side. Aphrodite took another step forward, and Ares flinched when she raised her hand. He had a burning feeling in the pit of his stomach. “I can’t see how you stand this, dear brother. I’m not here to discuss our sibling rivalry though. There is talk on Olympus against you.” “Fuck’em. I just conquered one of the largest areas of Greece. I am practically unstoppable. Their actions do not concern me.” “Yeah, I figured you’d say that. I’m just warning you before it’s too late. That’s all.” She waved her hands, smiled and another poof of smoke drifted lazily where she had stood. 5

Ares smiled. He didn’t give a damn about the other Gods. If he had his way they’d all be taken out just like this village, fast and hard. Zeus was a rotting old corpse of a God who needed to follow in his father’s footsteps and Hera was just a whore. “You see this? All of you look down upon Earth. Know that this land is mine!” He raised his hands to the skies and laughed. Rain began to fall from large dark puffy clouds, washing the blood and dirt away to reveal the sadness of loss. Ares looked around him, feeling a buzzing in his ears. The world went black around him as he fell to the ground. **** “Ares, get up you pathetic excuse for a God.” The voice was harsh, angry, and commanding. I don’t have to take this, Ares thought as he opened his eyes to find himself caged like an animal. Zeus’s thunderous voice boomed again, “You’ve committed a harsh grievance against me. Your power swells, your head grows, and you continue to act without remorse. You continue to abuse your power and we fear it may set the course of the world off.” The God of War forced himself to his feet only to find he was trapped in a large box. Zeus stood before him, his long gray hair and beard covering large, broad shoulders. For an ancient God, Zeus still had a muscular build, much like his father, Cronos. Angry flames danced in piercing black eyes. Golden doors behind Zeus opened and several other Gods walked in, all wearing solemn, angry expressions. Apollo led the pack followed by Hephaestus, Hermes and Pan. “What is this? I have done nothing wrong here, let me go,” Ares protested. He shook the slats but they would not budge. He stretched out his hand, palm facing outward and shot an energy blast at the slats, but the blast ricocheted around the cage until it struck Ares in the back. He fell forward against the slats with a loud thump. Zeus stepped closer. “Do you recognize this woman?” He held out his hand and an image appeared in front of Ares. A woman, tall and slender with auburn hair and green eyes was running through a field of marigolds in a white dress. She was laughing, throwing her head back carelessly as she ran into the arms of another man. Ares recognized it as Zeus. “No. I’ve never seen her.” Zeus threw a punch, his fist landing against the slats inches away from Ares’ face. “Liar! That woman belonged to me and you know it.” 6
SACRIFICE
“Come to think of it…” “You murdered her after she had an affair with you.” “You were going to do the same thing. What’s the difference?” “The difference was,” a female voice announced, “you stepped over a line deliberately.” Ares swallowed hard. He hated that voice, hated that God with all his energy. Hera appeared before him. Her long black hair made her look thinner than she should have. Her cold stare turned to a sneer. She narrowed her eyes at Ares, walked towards him. Anger and rage radiated from her presence. Ares knew he was in trouble now. Surely there had to be a way out. Her veneer conveyed her smugness. “And now it’s time for you to pay the price.” “Let me go you evil—” Hera held up two fingers to his lips and silenced him. “You will be let go. Stripped of your powers,” she snapped her fingers and Ares body shook, his legs going rubbery beneath him. He slumped down as he tried to regain his footing, but a ball of light appeared before him. It grew bigger as he grew weaker, all of his energy draining from him. “What is this? I can’t believe any of this,” he yelled, but no one cared. “You’re going to throw the entire world off kilter if you do not get a grip, dear boy. We can’t have you destroying everything. That you would be so inconsiderate of the ones who put you where you are is inconceivable. You are hereby banished from Olympus until otherwise told.” “You can’t do that to me. I am the God of…” His world went black again. **** Ares woke up with a pounding headache. Why was he slumped over a desk? He raised his head, opening his eyes to find himself in a messy office, half empty bottle of brandy in front of several other empty bottles of various other alcohols. A desk lamp and several pens were spread out all over the desk beside a weird object with buttons. Each button held a number, a few letters. He recognized it as a telephone. Ares stood slowly, turning around to see the blinds tightly shut over windows.

He peered out through one to find that it was dark outside. Cars drove down paved streets and a few people still milled about though they were dressed very differently. The phone rang, making the pounding in Ares’ head worse. Almost instinctively, he picked up the device, “Hello?” “John Mars, great you’re in. I need you down at 625 Polk Street. We have a crime scene on our hands and our men are stumped.” “What the hell did I drink?” His voice trailed off. “Mars, can you come down now?” the voice barked. “Wha-yeah.” “Great. We’ll see you in a few minutes.” The phone went dead. “What the hell is going on here?” he yelled. A small boom followed by a pink cloud that dissipated into a woman’s body forced Ares’ attention towards the window. “Hello, big brother.” Ares stared at Aphrodite, standing in her large flowing gown. Her long blonde curls were pulled back. He sighed. “You. What do you want?” “I’ve come to fill you in on the missing details.” Ares laughed. “What possibly could you know? I didn’t see you when Zeus banished me from Olympus.” “I tried to warn you, brother. You are just a stubborn fool.” “Stuff it, woman. How do I get back to Greece?” “You don’t even know where you are now, you silly nit. And you won’t be going back to Greece, either.” Ares’ eyes burned with rage. Balling his fists, he shook them in the air, slamming them down on the table. “What do you mean I’m not getting back to Greece?” “Calm down,” she replied. “Calm down?” His eyebrows rose. “Calm down? Ha!” Crossing his arms and closing his eyes, he wished himself back to Greece. Nothing happened. “What is the meaning of this? Have the Gods left me without my powers too?” “Most of them.” 8
SACRIFICE
“How can they do this?” Ares held out his hand, aiming at the window and found no spark of energy to command. He strode over to the desk, swung his arm around, sending all of the empty bottles crashing to the floor. He went to lift the desk up only to find that it actually hurt and that he was much weaker than before. “Calm down, I said.” Ares swore beneath his breath and walked around to the chair behind the desk, stepping over the pile of broken glass. “Fine. Help me get out of here.” “I cannot do that.” Ares leaned forward, laying his head in his hands. “Great. I’m stuck in a place I cannot escape from and the Gods be damned.” “I can help you get your powers back and make things a bit better, though.” Ares searched her face for compassion, finding the emotions she always held for her dear brother. At least she meant well. “It’s not enough.” “I am sorry. Hera banished you to another time where you would no longer bother her. You’ve been sent to another country that in our time wasn’t even populated by humans yet. In fact, in this time, we don’t exist.” “Fine,” he slumped back in the chair. “Tell me what I need to know.” “Zeus was so upset with you that he took your powers from you and sealed them in an object which he sent to a different period than our own. If you want your powers back, you must find the object. I hear it glitters, but that’s all I know.” “So I’m unable to do anything?” “You’ve been totally stripped of your powers.” Hearing it again was still painful. “Essentially leaving me…” “As nothing. You’re not a God anymore. You’re human.” “Great. So I’m stuck here without the ability to teleport out of this century. What year is it anyway?” Aphrodite walked over to his desk, picked up the newspaper from the previous day and read the date aloud. “January fifth, 1954.” “What?” “You’ve been sent to San Francisco, in a place called California. It’s a very large city, full of many people. The laws are different here than in our own time, brother. You must be careful. We are but legend here. You know how Hera’s punishments always work out.” 9
Alexandria Rayne
“Yeah. Do whatever it is to make amends and learn some lame ass lesson in order to get back in her favor.” “That’s right.” “So,” he looked at his sister, who seemed to have a smug smile on her face, “What is it I am to do in San Francisco, California?” “Apparently, you’re a famous detective.” “What?” “Sure. I love the coat, by the way.” She pointed over at the coat rack and snapped her fingers. The coat came floating into her hands. Ares scoffed. “That ugly thing? Can’t I get one in leather, at least?” “It’ll cost you.” “What now? I haven’t any way of forcing people to do anything. I have no armies to lead and pillage with.” “You’ll have to pay for it in cash.” “Great. I’m a commoner now.” His voice carried the extra syllables of the word just a little longer than normal. “Oh it won’t be so bad. You still have your way with women. Or at least I thought you did,” she giggled. Aphrodite walked over to the desk, picking up the plaque. “Mr. John Mars? They gave you a new name too. Nice.” Ares glared at her. “What are you talking about?” “Oh, you should definitely be prepared for the next person who comes in through your door. Take her case.” She snapped her fingers. The coat disappeared, reappearing on the coat wrack. Ares caught the fluttering of her eyelashes. “Thanks, but no thanks. New people in my life are bad news, baby.” Ares didn’t recognize the words coming out of his own mouth! “Too bad, John,” she giggled. “I’ll think about it.” “There are things in your desk that will help you survive in these times. Oh, and lay off the booze. That will actually hurt you now too.” “What?” He turned his head to the side. “Gotta go big brother! Besides, you have work to do.” She snapped her fingers and that annoying pink cloud appeared, covering the space where she had been. 10
SACRIFICE
“Damn,” he muttered. He was alone now. His head still hurt. How could the other Gods do this to him? After all the fame and money he’d brought to Olympus… The hell with them. They were all worthless now. Dead even, apparently. “How the hell am I supposed to get there?” Ares threw his hands up in frustration. Slamming a fist into the wooden desk, a drawer popped open. Ares pulled the drawer open, curiously looking inside. A leather wallet sat with a large handgun and bullets. “This is the best they’ve got here?” He picked up the gun, feeling the heavy weight of its power in his hands. Six chambers with a long silver barrel, an ivory handle that fit perfectly in his hands, this gun was made for him. He set the piece down on the desk and picked up the odd leather holster. Standing, Ares pulled out the odd leather holster and slipped it over him. It also fit perfectly though it clashed with his torn black leather vest. Picking up the gun, Ares examined it again, enjoying how the light reflected off the metal. He reached into the drawer, grabbed a bullet and inserted it into the revolver’s chamber. Taking careful aim, he squeezed the trigger, firing a round into the glass that blasted a large hole in the door, sending splinters and shards of glass everywhere. “I can work with this,” he smiled. The phone rang again, Ares spun around pointing the gun at it. “Don’t,” he grunted, “Do that,” and the phone rang again. Reaching over the stack of papers, Ares picked up the phone. “Yeah?” “John, are you coming down here? Is everything okay? I heard gunshots in your office.” “Skip it, I’m fine. I’ll be downstairs in a moment. You’re just outside, right?” “Yeah.” He sighed. “I’ll be there in a moment.” “Hurry.” The line went dead. Ares loaded the gun with bullets and rushed towards the door. Stepping on glass and wood, he reached for the trench coat and snagged it off the rack before slamming what was left of his door. The coat covered most of his body, hiding his leather vest, necklace and gun. It was a good thing too, because just across the street were several police cars flashing bright lights. Men in uniform stood around a large area that was taped off. 11
Alexandria Rayne
A large man dressed in brown coat that matched Ares’ stepped in direct view of the site. “John!” The burly man extended a hand to Ares. His firm handshake threw Ares off; the man certainly had a strong grip. “So good of you to come. We’re stumped.” Panic stricken, the man’s thick moustache twitched when he spoke. “Umm, tell me what’s wrong, Mr.” Ares eyes scanned the man’s jacket, looking for identification, “Howard.” “John, you know better than to call me by that name.” “Right. Um…” “Trace. John, are you okay? You smell like—“ “Yeah, it’s been a rough day,” Ares interrupted, putting his hand to his brow. Smoothing back his curls, he stood next to Trace. “That’s the scene over there behind those men.” Pulling him by the arm, Trace led Ares to the scene where he pointed to the body on the floor. Blood-splatter covered the pavement and the man’s body looked disfigured. A few bones were sticking out where they shouldn’t have been; more blood soaked the shirt he wore. The man only wore one shoe. “Well, there it is. Witness over there says he fell out of the window from four stories up. A closer inspection showed dirt under his fingernails, but it could be blood from a struggle.” Leaning towards the body, Ares reached out, trying to feel the man’s past. “Dammit” he muttered when he realized that nothing happened. His powers had been removed! “Curse them.” “Something the matter, John?” “No. Nothing. Skip it.” “Any ideas?” Damn, Trace was pushy. Reaching to touch the man’s neck, Ares felt wet skin. “There’s a large clean cut here,” he turned to Trace. “It’s thin, the man was choked and probably killed before he was thrown out the window. Probably fishing line or something like that was used to strangle him. Any idea who this man is?” As if it mattered to Ares right now. He might as well play the part. “Not a clue. Our men found nothing on him to identify him. No wallet, no driver’s license.” 12
SACRIFICE
“It doesn’t make sense.” Trace sighed heavily. “We waited for you to get here before turning the body over. Do you want to be the one to do it?” Sure. Send me back to a time I know nothing about, stick me with a job I’m not qualified to do and make me turn a dead man on his back. Zeus, you asshole. “Go ahead.” “You never were much for dead bodies, Mars. Live ones…” What? “I saw you last week walking out of that bar with the blonde dame, Mars.” Ares felt Trace’s elbow digging into his rib. “Yeah, you know me. Party central.” He feigned a smile. “Well,” he motioned towards the body with his hands. “You ready?” “Go ahead,” he let out a breath. “All right boys, you heard Mr. Mars. Flip the body over.” Two paramedics dressed in white scuttled over, moving the body onto a gurney. Everyone but Ares gasped at the sight of the man’s face being revealed. “That’s,” Trace pointed, one hand over his mouth, “Dan Westguard!”

Chapter Two
“Who?” Ares blurted out. “Dan Westguard, the largest financial banker in this city. He’s well known for financing tons of rehab projects as well as contributing millions of dollars to the community.” Ares turned to face Trace. “Did he have any enemies?” “Not that we know of. ‘Course his dealings were very secretive. He…” Trace’s voice trailed off. “Great.” Ares rubbed his thick beard. “Find out all you can about this man’s private dealings. That’s the only way we’ll solve this case.” Where did those words come from? “We’ll get right on it. Boys?” Trace turned to face two uniformed officers standing at attention. “Yes sir?” Both men straightened. “Get after those facts,” Trace growled. “Roger that.” “John, I hope we can solve this case before the news spreads.” “Me too.” Turning to face his office, Ares looked back at the window. He’d have a better view of this case after some sleep. “Let me get going, uh, Trace. I’ve got phone calls to make.” “You’ll keep in touch?” “Yes.” “Great. That’s what I like to hear, son. Call us.” Trace put a large hand on Ares’ shoulder. The weight of Trace’s hand was heavy, making Ares feel threatened at the fact that another human, a mortal, could possibly hurt him, the former God of war. “Oh well,” he shook his head and walked back across the street. **** 14
SACRIFICE
“I still can’t figure a thing out in this damned culture,” Ares threw his hands up in frustration. Tossing his gun down on the desk, it landed with a loud thud against this hard wood. Pacing around his office, he tore off his coat, tossing his coat to the chair beside the door. “I don’t understand a thing in this world.” A loud poof made Ares jerk around to see the familiar glittery pink cloud before his half sister appeared. “Trouble, John?” “Dammit, yes. You know what the matter is.” Aphrodite stepped closer to him, her fingers pressing into his chest. Ares found himself pressed against his desk. “Let’s talk.” **** Picking up the clock beside his lamp, Ares noted the time. It was almost six a.m. His half-sister had just left after filling him in on the missing details to make this world more understandable. He now had an understanding of automobiles, weaponry, customs in the States, how men were supposed to behave and what everyone expected of him. For that knowledge, he was grateful. “Of course if the Fates or anyone else finds out that I’ve told you anything…” “Skip it,” Ares warned. “I’ll get back at all of them eventually.” “Right.” With a kiss, she was gone. He closed his eyes and wondered what was going to befall him next. Damn that arrogant bastard Zeus for these cruel games! His body was tired. The sun would be up soon and others who occupied the building with him would wonder about the shattered door. Or the large hole across the hall. It was a good thing that nobody had been in the office as late as he was last night. Looking out the window, he saw the most beautiful view he’d ever seen. The sun began cresting over the building tops. The air tasted of salt and brine as it flowed in through the open window behind his chair. Seagulls could be heard in the distance amongst the traffic and rail cars. The mere size of what Ares saw just outside his own window was overwhelming. He’d seen and conquered entire armies of men, slaughtered and ruled villages, but this world was so new to him. The opportunities were abundant for someone of his stature, except that he didn’t have his powers. Looking up at the tiled ceiling and back at the door again, Ares shrugged his shoulders, exhaling a powerful breath. 15

Leaning forward with his elbows on his desk, he closed his eyes in thought. Someone had an object that contained his powers and the only way he could get them back was to learn whatever stupid lesson Hera had in store for him. Damn his luck. And damn Zeus for his poor taste in women! The old man made mistakes. If he were going to play the part of detective in this world, he might as well examine the building across the street. Later. He was starting to lose his mind from lack of sleep. “Mr. Mars?” A feminine voice echoed in his tiny office, disturbing him from his thoughts. “Aphrod—excuse me miss? Can I help you?” “My,” a tall, voluptuous woman wearing high heels and clutching a tiny black purse stepped through the debris. Her auburn hair was done up in a bun atop her head, exposing the pale flesh of her throat. His jaw dropped when she stepped forward. “They told me you were different, but seeing you standing there in torn leather proves it.” Ares looked down at himself and back at her again. “What do you want?” “What every other dame in this city wants, a perfect husband, a family, two point five kids and a white picket fence.” “Skip it. What’s your real reason for coming to see me?” “What does a woman usually want when she comes into a detective’s office?” “My help. So, what can I help you with?” “Help me find my father’s killer.” Her eyes widened, horror crossed her face. Quickly, she regained her composure, but her expression remained adamant. Her chest stuck out proudly as she stepped over the debris in the doorway. “They said you lived a different life but I thought they were kidding.” John looked to her buxom chest, then back at her face, smiling. “What can I do for you?” The closer she came towards him, the more he noticed about her. A buxom figure, a pretty face, unscarred. Two blue-green eyes sparkled with intensity only a moron would miss. Red, pouty lips that were made for kissing captured his body’s attention. Every fiber in Ares’ body was alive with desire. 16
SACRIFICE
Her lips were delectable, plump treats made just for kissing. Or... “Mr. Mars?” “That’s what the plaque says.” Standing, Ares crossed his arms. “Well, I want to hire you to help me find the killer. My father was—“ “Dan Westguard.” “How did you know?” “I was called in several hours ago. You know he was found across the street from here. Also, it makes sense that you’re coming to me this early in the morning. What’s your name?” “Linda,” she turned her head away. Strands of hair fell over her face, hiding her expression from Ares. Stepping out from behind the desk, he took a step forward. Startled, Linda inhaled a sharp breath. It must not be every day that she saw a man dressed in leather from head to toe. “You’re…oddly dressed for this time of morning.” “Yeah, I was out partying last night before I got the call from Trace.” “They’ve always said you were an odd man, Mr. Mars.” “Yeah,” he scratched his head. “They warned me that you were a womanizer, but you haven’t made a move yet.” He laughed. “It’s been a long night.” “Skip it, Mr. Mars.” “Call me John.” “So will you take my case?” “Yes, of course.” What the hell was he suggesting? He didn’t know a thing about this time other than what his half sister had told him, nor did he really care. But Linda Westguard was something else entirely. He’d love to take her right over his desk. Linda ran a manicured hand through her hair, the early light of the sun shining off the ring on her finger. She brought her hand down to her hip. “That ring,” he whispered. “Pardon me?” “Oh,” running his hand over the curly hair of his thick black beard, “the ring on your finger caught my eye. It looks exquisite.” 17
Alexandria Rayne
“Thanks. I don’t know where I got it from, I think my father gave it to me when I was young.” Extending a hand outward, she waved it around, fingers splayed, giving Ares a better view of the shimmering reflection of the light off the gold. There was no doubt about it; this ring wasn’t made during this time. “Do you know how old it is?” “I’ve never bothered to find out, no.” Linda glanced at him, turning her head sideways. “Why are you so interested in my ring, Mr. Mars? Do you want it as payment?” Shaking his head casually, “I used to collect jewelry in a past life.” Ares turned his head away, scratching the back of his head. “Do we discuss your fees now?” “No, we can discuss those…later.” Ares grinned, “I’m not cheap, you with it?” “I understand. I’d be willing to…compensate you,” she winked. “But don’t mistake me for being fast.” Ares recognized that she was trying to play him as women often did back in Ancient Greece. If he could get the ring off her finger and examine it closer, then he’d go along with her ploy. “I’m sure we can work something out.” “Great. Where do we start?” “You start by telling me everything you know. Where were you last night at the time of his death? Who were his enemies? Why would someone murder him?” “Mr. Mars, I don’t know.” “Then I suspect you’re hiding something, lady.” The dialogue came out of nowhere. Linda batted an eyelash. “Never.” “Then tell me when you found out about his murder.” “Just last night, I…” looking around, Linda appeared to be searching his office for something. “I don’t know. It all happened so fast last night.” “Then you were with the victim—your father, at the time of death.” It was a statement, matter-of-fact. “Yes” “You sound like you’re in the know. Start talking.” Ares couldn’t figure out who was putting words in his mouth, but all these questions seemed natural. The flow of his 18
SACRIFICE
voice buzzed with confidence, knowledge and power. He liked the idea that people would be terrified of him in this time, but Linda looked like she was on the verge of tears. “I didn’t see anything. We were in the apartment across the street. I had too many drinks last night and—“ She burst into tears. Ares stepped around the desk, taking her into his arms. “It’s okay. We’ll find the killers.” Patting her shoulder, he realized just how soft she was. Her arms circled his body, tears streamed hot against his bare chest. His groin tightened against his pants. A hand smoothed over the thin leather of his vest. “I hope so,” she sniffed. Pushing her from his chest, he held her at arms length. “What were you two doing across the street last night?” “Visiting a friend. I ran out to get us some cola while Steve and my father talked business.” “Steve?” Ares couldn’t have been thinking clearly. What do I care about this woman? “Steven. He and my father have been friends for several years. They met just before my mom died.” “And you two were over having a drink?” “Just a friendly get together. That’s harmless.” “Of course.” Turning to face the morning sunrise, Ares vision blurred from the bright sun. “Have you been up all night, Mr. Mars?” “Yes. I spent most of the night with Inspector Howard before coming back here.” Peering over his shoulder, she tapped an empty liquor bottle, her fingernail echoing against the glass. “Looks like you had quite a night before the incident.” “Now wait a minute. You got some nerve, assuming I was up all night drinking. I’m the Go—“ Frowning, “Mr. Mars, look. I know it’s early, but I just found out that my father has been murdered. I’m hardly in a rational position.” “I noticed. Let’s talk about Steve. Tell me what sort of man allows his friend’s daughter to come over and stay for a long period of time?” Gasping, “Steve’s just a friend. He wouldn’t do anything like murder my father.” 19
Alexandria Rayne
Ares took one long step closer, “You really believe that?” His angry stare made Linda clutch her chest. “Mr. Mars, I know my father better than that,” she huffed. “I never thought a man like you…” “A man like me wouldn’t bother—hey! Wait a minute!” Pausing, Ares let out a breath. He’d almost slipped out his little secret. Things were starting to get intense. The last thing he needed was to get so wrapped up in this mess that he lost sight of his original goal. Still, he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that Linda held some significance to Hera’s grand scheme. “All right Ms. Westguard, let’s calm down. Go back home and get some rest, it’s been a long night for both of us.” “You’re right.” She turned around, raising slender arms above her head, pulling out a pin. Her hair fell down over her face as she shook it out. Her lips were still ever so kissable, but Ares only had one thing on his mind at a time like this. “Here’s my card,” slipping a card out of her purse, she handed it to Ares. He looked briefly at it and set it on top of a stack of papers on his desk. “I’ll be in touch with you later this evening.” **** A few hours later, Ares woke up with a pounding headache. The afternoon sun warmed spots on the wooden floor through the blinds. It seems that John Mars was a drunk if nothing else. How annoying that Ares found himself reaching for a half empty bottle of Scotch as he raised his head off the desk. His back ached and his neck muscles were tight. “Being mortal sucks.” Rubbing the thick-corded muscle of his shoulders, Ares opened his eyes wider to see it was daylight still, but the sun was setting slowly over the horizon of office buildings. The wind brought scents from the bay, salty air, brine and so much pollution that Ares had to wonder how humans had survived all these years if they continued polluting this world. “Linda Westguard,” he mouthed. Her card stared at him on his desk. The ring on her finger was the only thing he was worried about; it probably held his powers. Why Hera would choose to lock his powers in something so small and easily noticeable by a 20

man who used his armies to steal massive amounts of jewelry was beyond him. But hey, who the hell cared, right? “Zeus is a damn fool.” “Something the matter, dear brother?” The pink cloud exploding in front of his desk made Ares wonder if he were seeing things. Had he really drank that much last night? “Aphrodite, what the hell do you want?” “Oh come on now, John,” she giggled like a schoolgirl. Sitting up, Ares batted an arm at her. “Never mind that. Why are you here?” “I’m sneaking away from Hera’s court right now. The old bat’s on the war path, sending others to different time periods as punishment for various crimes as well.” “So it’s not just me. Good. What is the old man doing about it?” “Nothing. He doesn’t even know.” “Mutiny on Mount Olympus?” “More like a case of exaggerated PMS. The other Gods are learning quickly to fly straight, so to speak. How are you doing taking on this role?” “I hate it. I can’t understand a thing that’s going on. Especially the part where I seem to care about the well being of others. And the fact that I seemingly know what to say as a detective.” “That’s a side effect of her wrath as well. Hera is trying to upset the balance of power by sliding us into human lives.” “And taking the human lives to Olympus?” “Exactly.” She leaned her shapely figure on the side of his desk. “You will find yourself acting more like this John Mars and less like yourself until enough time has passed that you won’t remember even being the God of War.” “So how do I stop this from happening?” “You know that old bitch. Go on some stupid journey, learn a damn lesson through hardship, wait for Hera to get off her power trip and return to normal.” “Except that’s not going to happen, is it?” Aphrodite shook her head. “I’m afraid not.” Leaning back in his chair, Ares slumped. He put his hands behind his head, closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. “You know that woman who was in here earlier?” 21
Alexandria Rayne
“No. Not really.” “I can smell your obvious attraction to her. Pursue it.” “Skip it.” “Come on, brother. Have fun while you’re being screwed.” A wicked smile crossed Aphrodite’s lips. He turned his head to one side. “Okay. Fine. Have it your way. I’ll be back when I can.” Poof! Like that, she was gone. Alone again. Ares leaned back in the chair, setting his feet atop the mahogany desk with a thud. Kicking aside loose papers and an empty bottle, Ares wondered just what he was going to have to do in order to get out of this predicament. He wondered if the ring on the beautiful woman’s finger had anything to do with all of this. He was sure he had no way of contacting her until he spotted the business card at the edge of his desk. He picked it up and read it again. Her name and phone number were on the card. Glancing at the phone, Ares reached to pick up the receiver, but realized he had nothing to say to Linda. He’d have to call her later, he decided. For now, he needed to get new clothing, preferably in black. Surely there had to be stores where he could steal something decent in a large city like this, he decided as he left his office. Ares looked off to his left and walked in that direction. The air smelled of fish, reminding him of Greece, except that the air here stunk. After a few blocks of nothing but office buildings, apartments, the blinding sun and department stores, Ares came to an intersection. The large office buildings were intimidating to the former God of War, but he had more important things to worry about. Like getting better clothes. That trench coat was all wrong for him. The hat that hung on the coat rack needed to be black. And the new trench coat, leather. Loud music and bright lights flashed from a building across the street. He headed in that direction to see what the noise was all about. People walked around him, offering him things he didn’t want or need. A homeless man sat against the wall, head lolling back and forth. “Spare change, Mister?” 22
SACRIFICE
Ares ignored the poorly dressed bastard. One glance at the kid’s tattered rags told Ares all he needed to know and the urge to spit in his face and kick him subsided as he walked past more street vendors. Annoying little things, also dressed in ratty clothes tried standing in his way. “Jewelry for your outfit, Mister?” “Get away from me,” he shouted. The few panhandlers and onlookers turned away. The crowd quickly parted for him as he continued to hunt for a decent clothing store. Ares passed a large black man with a scruffy beard that covered most of his face. “Hey, John Mars. How’s it going?” The man’s gruff voice caught Ares off guard, but his instincts made Ares stop abruptly. “Do I know you?” The large man laughed loudly, tugging at Ares’ torn vest. “John you’re a funny guy. Even with that get-up, you’re still the man about town.” “Right.” Ares turned to face the man squarely. His bald head was large and intimidating. Piercing gun steel blue eyes stared hard at Ares. The man uncrossed his arms, extending one large arm towards Ares. “Want a drink?” “Sure.” John Mars drank this early in the morning? Just what kind of private investigator was he, anyway? The man shook his head in amazement. “Mars, you amuse me. I can drink to that, though,” the man laughed loudly and Ares joined him in laughter. The man stopped abruptly. “Come on, let’s go get that drink.” Even his smile was dangerous. For the first time, Ares felt fear. This man was troublesome. Why would John Mars hang around him? Why would he go out this early in the day and drink with a large, intimidating black man? Thirty minutes later, it didn’t matter. Ares and the stranger sat in the bar, knocking back shots of whiskey, laughing and sharing stories. Ares learned that the stranger’s name was Joe; he was a construction worker who often drank with John Mars. Several hours later, Ares woke up, eyeing his unfamiliar surroundings. His head hurt. He needed badly to control John Mars before his own personality was completely wiped out.

Chapter Three
“Hello stranger. I see you couldn’t resist following me after I came in.” That voice… “Linda Westguard?” “That’s Miss Westguard to you, but yes.” “What am I doing here?” Noticing he lay only in his boxers, Ares sat up quickly, pulling the sheets tightly over his large legs. His body was rather hard to conceal on the small bed. Looking down, he was disgusted by the large baby yellow floral pattern that decorated the blanket. “Funny, I never figured you for flowers.” Linda stood in front of him, hands on her hips. Her auburn hair fell slightly over her shoulders. Her eyes glared at his crotch. Heat raced under his skin. “I happen to like flowers of all sorts, Mr. Mars.” Her chin tilted upwards in defiance. She was challenging him, and arousing him. Ares kicked at the covers, creating folds to hide his painfully obvious erection. Slender legs peeked out beneath a belted green dress. She wore black pumps and hose, the effect of her shapely calves drawing his gaze upwards until his eyes were fixed on her hips. “What are you doing?” “Looking at a beautiful object. What’s it to ya?” “Mr. Mars, I never!” She turned to leave, taking one angry step towards the door. “Wait,” he called out. “What?” Her flushed cheeks gave her away. She was aroused. “Where are my clothes?” “Hmph. I’ll get them for you when I come back with your aspirin and water. If I come back.” “I’m supposed to be trapped in your bedroom?” He shifted, stretching a leg out from beneath the covers. Linda gasped at the sight of bare thigh. 24
SACRIFICE
Ares set his foot on the ground. Standing, he decided that modesty could go fudge itself. Linda stepped back. Rising, Ares cleared the distance between them. Unable to stop himself, he found himself gripping her shoulders, pulling her dangerously close to him. Her lips hovered just in front of his, a baby’s breath away. “Do you treat all your clients this way, Mr. Mars?” “Only the good-looking ones.” He leaned in, his powerful mouth devouring hers. She tasted sweet, soft, her lips pliant beneath his. He could only guess where the sexual urges were coming from. John Mars. Oh well. Her lips, her breasts, crushed against his body felt right. He saw her hand move to slap him. Seizing her hand, he locked their fingers together and lowered her hand. His other hand found the small of her back. Pulling her to him, nuzzling his erection against her, the only thing separating them was the fabric of his boxers and her dress. He claimed her mouth, his tongue parting her lips and invading her mouth tasting luscious velvet. Experienced lips kissed him back, forcing him to take a step backwards. Then it came, the sting across his cheek from her free hand. “Ouch,” he muttered, breaking from the kiss. “I thought women like you liked men like me.” “You have some nerve, Mr. Mars. I hardly think you have room to accuse me of being a woman like those harlots you associate with.” “Baby, that stung more than the slap.” She turned her shoulder to him. “Why am I here?” Her menacing stare burned into his skull. Ares didn’t like being pushed around, but her fiery spirit was something he was growing fond of. “I brought you here after you left the club last night. You were passed out on the side of the street. I happened to be out in the neighborhood and when I saw you lying against the wall, I thought I should help you. Doing my duty as a good citizen, you see.” “Right.” Ares rubbed his beard. 25
Alexandria Rayne
“I was! Honest. Daddy always taught me to help others, especially when they-“ “Are helping you?” “No, never. I mean, you already agreed to help me find his killers. What do I have to gain by helping an innocent victim of too much drinking?” “You can’t get into heaven that way.” Those weren’t things Ares would say. Dammit! This was going to piss him off if he didn’t figure out how to get his powers back. “You just happened to be out that late, huh?” “Yes.” “Why?” He looked at her, studying her for the first time in broad daylight. She was curvy, luscious full lips emphasizing a kissable mouth. The way the light fell on her face gave her features a mysterious look. Her emerald green eyes sparkled in the sunlight and the dress she wore hugged her figure. A man could get lost in her thighs and never want to find his way out. “Never mind that.” “You’re a whore?” Linda reached up and slapped him again, the sting coming to his other cheek. “How dare you accuse me of such a thing?” Ares lifted a hand to the warm spot on his cheek. “Then why were you out late last night? Surely it was after your bedtime.” He smiled deviously. Linda walked over to the window, drew up the blinds and turned to face him. “I was taking care of things.” “I see.” “Anyway, what were you doing in that area of town? It’s not like you to be out that late and it’s been reported that you don’t have a case right now.” “How do you know all of this?” “I just pay attention to the facts, Mr. Mars.” “I was out with a friend.” Joe led him into that bar. Why? Ares was paying attention. His crotch reacted as she bent over to fluff the pillow at the foot of the bed. The green dress she wore complimented her eyes and drew attention to her face. Her nipples peaked beneath the cottony material of the dress and he found himself wanting to strip her of every article of clothing and touch her everywhere, sink himself inside her, feel her warmth. 26
SACRIFICE
“What were you doing out that late? Having a drink or two?” Her accusatory tone annoyed Ares, but somehow he expected it. Linda walked gracefully over to the window, taking long, slow strides. She pushed open the shutter and said nothing. The salty air filled the room, the scent riding on the breeze. “I was out looking for a clothing store.” He realized that sounded ridiculous as soon as he said it. “Odd, but most people shop during the day.” “Yeah, I get that a lot.” “So, Mr. Mars,” she started. “Call me Ares.” “Funny man.” “Okay, call me John. I insist.” He smiled again. Linda smiled back. “Okay John. You may call me Linda. Do you have any business here other than occupying my time or staring at me as if I were a piece of meat?” “While I’m here, I might as well ask you more questions about your father. Get a look at the scene, the facts, the details.” The look of relief in her eyes almost made his heart ache. What the hell was wrong with him? The God of War didn’t care about anybody’s feelings but his own! She raised her hands and ran them through her hair, the light reflecting off the gold ring on her finger. “I cannot pay you right now. My father’s trust fund has not been legally given to me just yet.” “I’m sure we can work something out.” He saw his grin reflected in her eyes. He swore he saw lust dancing in her eyes too, but he wasn’t going to push things just yet. “The ring glows beautifully in the sunlight.” “This old thing? Why? Do you want it as payment? I suppose I could part with it, but…” her voice trailed off as she looked at the ring, turning her hand in a few different directions so the light would reflect off all sides of the gem. “It’s an heirloom. I’m not sure how old it is, but it’s been passed down from at least two generations in my 27

family. My father,” Ares saw the slow trickle of tears fall down her cheeks, “gave it to me just before he was killed.” “Earlier you said he gave it to you a long time ago. Which is it?” “What does it matter?” “It makes the story, doll.” She sighed. Slumping shoulders forward, she looked at the ring. Ares took her chin in his hand, tilting it upwards. “I am intrigued by the Greek inscription on the band.” Her jaw dropped. “How did you know that was there?” “I am a private eye, remember. Besides, when you were inches away from me last night, I noticed it on your hand.” “I see. You have a very good eye, Mr. Mars. But I don’t speak the language and don’t know why I’d even have it. There are no Greeks in my family.” “Still, I’m just curious.” “You’re persistent. Anyway, your pants are on the chair. Get dressed so we can leave.” “Where are we going?” “I need to take you back to your apartment, don’t I?” “I have the day free. We can go over the details of the case and visit the murder scene. Also, we can go to dinner tonight.” “You sure you want to go to dinner with me, John?” “Always got my hopes up.” Linda exhaled slowly. “Fine. But you must dress normal. Like the rest of the sane world.” Ares looked at himself. “Agreed.” “Good. I’d hate to have you take me out dressed like that.” “Where is my vest?” “It was torn too badly. I had to throw it out.” “What?” Ares clenched his teeth. How dare she think his precious garments were trash? “Where did you throw it to?” “It’s in the kitchen trash right now. I’ll go get it.” “Best you hurry.” 28
SACRIFICE
Linda shook her head. “I can’t believe they ever said you were a gentleman. You’re nothing but an ass.” Reaching out, Ares grabbed her by the shoulders again. Frowning, she looked into his eyes, not showing a bit of fear. “I’m not afraid of you, John Mars.” “You should be,” he lowered his head and kissed her, this time just a chaste kiss, though the urge to conquer her mouth the way he used to with the Greek women had to be subdued. Point for Ares. Linda flinched, struggling to get away. “Let me go you big oaf,” she wrestled against his hand. Ares tightened his hold on her and pulled her one dangerous inch closer. His lips were almost on hers. She broke free and stormed out of the room, swinging her hips as she walked. Ares slipped on his pants. He could swear he smelled his sister’s scent of rose petals, but he thought he had none of his godly powers. Maybe it was… Ares turned around and examined the room she lived in. A crystal vase sat on a white nightstand beside the bed, full of red roses. The pale color scheme of the room annoyed Ares. Baby blues and pinks on the walls of the room made him wonder if Linda lived alone. Walking to the window, Ares looked down. He was two stories up and could see the view of the neighborhood. Everything had that same cookie cutter appearance. How annoying! If the plain colors of the trees and bright sun outside were any indicator of the rest of the world’s state of beauty in this time, Ares wasn’t pleased. It looked boring, every house on the block looked exactly like a copy of the other. The only differences had been in the color of paint on the outside of the houses, but even that was annoying. Pastels. “Doesn’t anyone know about black?” “Pardon me?” The door opened again and Linda returned with Ares’ vest. “I tried to repair the huge hole in the back, but nothing will stick to it and I can’t get a needle through it. This must be some tough leather, Mr. Mars. Where did you get it?” “It came from Greece, right after I conquered the Macedonians.” “Pardon?” Even with arched eyebrows, she was still sexy. “I mean it was a gift from a Greek relative.” 29
Alexandria Rayne
“Oh. I know of a shop in the Haight where they repair eclectic and exotic materials. Maybe they can help you.” “Take me there then.” “But I have to—“ “Do you want to find out who killed your father?” His voice boomed, was overpowering. Linda stepped back demurely. “Yes,” her voice was weak. “Then get me something to wear and let’s go there.” “All right.” The way her mouth curled up in a pout played with his heart. Ares hated this world even more than he thought possible. Women were for capturing, torturing, and only for his pleasure. Yesterday, he’d have slaughtered her entire village, city or whatever, sent massive armies in to destroy the remaining survivors and collect the spoils of war. Today, he was in a different period, playing the role of an investigator. Thank the Gods they left him with his brain and sharp wits. Except that he was slowly losing his own identity. If he agreed to solve this case, he’d ask for the ring as payment. She clearly had enough to live on if she resided in this house. And the Greek inscription on the ring may be the clue to getting him out of this bland time period. “Let’s go. I didn’t want to track dirt through the house so I left your boots in the kitchen. I managed to get some of the dirt off, but it looks like there’s a lot of blood on them. What sort of cases do you solve, anyway?” “Mostly murder cases,” he chose his words carefully, so as not to call attention to the fact that his boots had the blood of many humans and even a few demigods as well. “You’re clearly involved in your work. That’s good. A strong work ethic.” “Yeah.” He could tell that she wanted to ask about the blood further. “None of it belonged to your father. That was clean.” She sniffled as she led him into the kitchen. To his disgust, more pale colors, more off-white, paisleys and the like. Ares had to wonder which God suggested he be put in this world. “I’d give you the grand tour but we really don’t have time. Here are your boots.” She pointed to the large leather boots sitting on the off-white tiled floor. 30
SACRIFICE
Ares took them from her, noting how much cleaner and lighter they looked. The many laces actually looked thicker and stronger. “I had to find new laces, the old ones were a mess, tattered and would barely hold the boots on your large…ahem feet.” “Thanks.” He took them from her and slipped them on. “All I have is this cotton shirt of my dad’s for you to wear. It’s not much but it’s the closest thing I have to your size.” “Tell me about your father.” “Daddy? Oh, well Daddy was a banker. He lent money to very important people, you know.” “Really?” “Yes, really. He would come home and tell mother and I, all about his big deals.” “Did he have any enemies?” “No. Not that I can think of. Daddy was very friendly.” “Was he cheap?” “Mr. Mars!” “Well?” Ares’ eyebrows rose for effect. She was buying his act. Good. “Never. Daddy would even give money to strangers if he had it.” Clearly, he had it. The house was a testament to his wealth. The furniture was solid wood, Ares could tell that just by looking at it. Everything looked clean. Ares wondered, was everything this homogenized now? Was sexy little Linda putting on an act? If so, why? Ares took the shirt from Linda and slid it on. It barely fit over his broad shoulders and it nearly tore at the seams over his biceps, but it would do for now. Dammit “Let’s go.” Linda picked up her purse, keys and led Ares out into the garage. “Damn baby, even the cars are painted in bad taste.” ”You’re off your rocker. This is the finest automobile Daddy could afford at the time of his death. It runs well and is solidly built.” “But it’s ugly.” “You have no taste.” Ares leaned in so that his mouth hovered over her ear. “I kissed you, didn’t I?” Linda’s face turned several different shades of red and she looked away. 31

She handed the keys to Ares and walked around to the other side of the car. “I hardly expect a gentleman to get my door, but the least you can do is drive.” “You know, that’d be great but…” Shit, he didn’t know how to drive! Damn the gods! “Let me guess, all the blood flow has left your head?” “Something like that.” He shrugged. “Men,” she turned away, looking at the car. “Get in. I’ll drive.” “Fine.” Several hours later, Ares stood in front of his office, dressed and feeling better. “The new threads look good on you, I must admit.” Her smile was killer, making Ares wonder if she were truly capable of murdering her own father. “Thanks. Let’s go across the street after I get my piece.” Noticing her breath catch in her throat, he stepped closer. “Do you think it’s safe to go without the police?” “Relax. I’m a good shot.” “I’ll bet.” Her biting humor amused him. Her figure aroused him and Ares found himself not wanting to go back to Greece immediately. Still, time was passing by. Slowly, he could feel himself slipping away, his identity becoming a shadow in his mind. Would it be so bad to stay here with Linda? Working for the rest of his life, helping people? Hell no! He was the God of war, damn it! “What are you frowning for, John?” Startled, “Nothing. I was just thinking that we should have Trace come with us. I doubt the killers are watching the place, but it’d be a good idea to have backup.” “Right.” “Let’s go to my office and I’ll phone the inspector right away.” She nodded, a lock of hair falling over her eyes. Ares licked his lips; the way the light fell over her face shadowed her expression. Ten minutes later, Ares stood with Linda and inspector Trace Howard as well as a few back up men in a blue and white. “Let’s go inside John. I doubt you’ll find anything in the apartment, but it’s worth a shot.” The inspector’s gruff voice boomed. 32
SACRIFICE
“The point is to uncover what’s not been seen by the untrained eye, Trace.” Thank the Gods Mar’s personality was good at his job. “Right. You sure you want the lady to come with us?” Ares nodded. The inspector looked solidly at Linda, “Are you okay with this, Ms. Westguard?” “Yes, of course. Anything I can do to help the police capture my father’s killers.” The inspector led them into the large building, Ares and Linda following behind him while two police officers brought up the rear. Trace flashed his badge to the attendant behind the large desk. The man automatically handed him the key, smiling at Linda. Ares wondered why he smiled at her. “Do you know that man?” “I’ve never seen him.” Ares noticed how jerky her movements had become. She didn’t look at him or inspector Trace. Nobody said a word as the elevator led them up to the fifth floor. Inspector Trace led them, key in hand to Steve’s apartment. One hand on the doorknob, he unlocked the door. Pushing it open with a free hand, Ares watched Trace. Keeping his eyes on the uniformed men and Linda’s features, he walked cautiously into the apartment, glad for a gun at his side. The air was heavy; Ares felt murder and blood still present. Glancing around the room; the window directly in front of him was open. “Has anyone been in here?” “Not since the night of the murder. We can’t find the owner and it looks like he’s split town. We’ve tried locating him with no results.” “Linda, is this the way the apartment looked when you left it?” “No, it’s…” Her voice trailed off. What was she thinking? To his left, purple couch pillows lay on the floor. The purple couch directly to his left looked like it had been moved, sitting at an awkward angle. Glass was strewn about the floor in the center of the room and two empty wine bottles lay on the floor beside the wall. Ares walked closer to the open window, looking down at the sill. A blood stained sheet lay beneath the sill along with fishing wire. Ares followed the fishing wire back towards the door handle. He should have noticed it earlier. His game was off. Or, he wasn’t really John Mars. 33
Alexandria Rayne
“Inspector, how come this apartment hasn’t been sealed off? Linda, are you absolutely sure your father and this Steve character were friends?” “The best.” “So, he’d have no reason to be upset with your father?” “What are you saying?” Her eyes widened.

SACRIFICE
Chapter Four
“Inspector what we have here is simple, but the main clue is missing.” “Are you sure, John?” “Almost positive. It was rather ingenious. Were there any other witnesses up here, do we know that?” “My men found out that flowers were sent around ten o’clock, but the boy who delivered them has yet to give a statement.” “Get a hold of him. He’ll have the missing link. And find Steve.” Ares stepped back towards Linda and Trace, keeping a cautious eye on her while she fidgeted with strands of hair. Were those strands silky? What would they feel like blanketing his skin? How about her hot lips? “Right. How do you know he’s connected to this?” “He’s the one without an alibi, if what Miss Westguard is saying is the truth.” Taking a step back, Linda choked out a breath. “I would never lie to the police.” “No, doll but you’d distort your story in order to protect yourself. Tell me, when did you really leave this apartment last night?” “What business is it of yours? Inspector Howard, you believe me?” “I’m sorry Miss Westguard, we really don’t have any facts from you to base your story on. Can you give us an alibi?” She turned to face Ares. Looking at her directly, her cheeks were flushed with rage, and Ares almost felt guilty for putting her on the spot. “Mr. Mars, what are you trying to do?” “Just solve the case. Where were you all night?” “I suppose I should ask you the same thing, Mr. Mars. How come I picked you up last night?” Her eyes sparkled as she thrust her chin out in defiance. “You know where I was, you found me, remember?” 35
Alexandria Rayne
Setting a hand on his forehead, Trace lowered his head. “What is going on with you two?” “Nothing Chief,” Ares blurted out before he could stop himself. “I’m trying to get to the bottom of this.” “You’re doing a lousy job, Mr. Mars. Let’s go.” “Wait just a moment Miss Westguard. We’re not finished. Tell me what happened and why it took so long for you to get back to the apartment. By my estimates, you arrived at my office around six am. You said you left for soda earlier in the evening?” “Yes. Around seven thirty or so.” “So you were gone for a good number of hours, Miss Westguard?” Trace brought out a notepad from his shirt pocket and began jotting down notes. “Yes, but—“ she raised her hand to her mouth, biting her nails. Ares felt bad. She stood in front of the two men, her heart racing. Running a hand through her hair, she stopped, turning away from the two men. “I ran into an old friend and we ended up having a drink,” she said timidly. “That was one hell of a drink, Miss Westguard.” “I know,” she turned her head away, “It led to other things.” Ares’ heart ached as if he’d just been sucker punched. That came out of nowhere. “I see. So you were gone for quite some time before coming back to this apartment and finding your father already murdered?” “That’s right,” she muttered. “So then you came straight to my office? Funny, you looked like you’d just woken up.” Stepping closer to her, she looked up at him with pleading eyes, begging him to stop his questions. “What’s the deal Ms. Westguard?” He put his arms around her shoulders, feeling just how small she really was. Could she be playing him? Ares looked down at her into her green eyes. “I think we should reconvene after you’ve gotten a hold of the flower boy, Trace.” “As long as you’re sure, Mars.” Ares nodded. He didn’t like the situation he was in, but it was too late. He felt himself fading away slowly, being replaced by this repugnant drunk womanizer. 36
SACRIFICE
Well, maybe repugnant wasn’t the right word. Linda was staring into his eyes helplessly. And she was a beautiful woman. “Yes, let’s adjourn until later. Trace, get me that flower boy and we’ll come back. I have a strong theory but we’ll see once we hear from him.” “Right. Lou,” Trace turned to face a tall, thin man with a tiny moustache, “get a hold of that flower boy.” “Right away, boss.” Turning to face Linda, Ares looked deeper into her soft green eyes. Her expression of sadness and confusion tugged at his heartstrings. It was enough to sicken the former God of war, but still he felt compelled to help her. “Linda, may I accompany you home? For your safety I assure you.” “Yes. Please do.” “I’ll be in touch with you then, Mars. I hope you’re right about this.” “Great.” I hope I’m right about the ring on her finger… **** Ares sat beside Linda in a dimly lit bar, nursing a Tom Collins while she sipped soda. Turning to face her, Ares stared hard into her “You’re very worried about what the flower boy has to say, aren’t you?” Spinning around to face him, “No,” she blurted out. “Of course not. Do you think I killed my father?” “No, the clues don’t add up. You’re not good enough to play the part of daughter in distress.” He took a sip from his drink before waving at the bartender for another drink. The bartender brought them another round. Ares looked at Linda, really looked at her. Her dress clung to her figure; long legs peeked out beneath the hem of the skirt. She was shapely in all the right places. And probably innocent as hell. Ares licked his lips. But she knew something. “What are you doing, Mr. Mars?” “Please, call me John.” She exhaled hard. “Fine. John, are you sizing me up?” “Never doll. I already did that when you walked into my office.” Linda scoffed at his remark. “You’re obviously quick witted. I hope the same isn’t true of your bedside manner.” 37
Alexandria Rayne
“Are you coming onto me?” Lifting her soda to her mouth, Ares watched her swallow, the cool liquid sliding down her throat. Something pulled low in his groin. Her pale skin called to him, begging him to lick the place where a bead of sweat trickled down her throat. “No, Mr. Mars. I’m being direct. Come home with me.” Setting down his drink, Ares took her hand in his. Feeling heat burning against his fingers, he walked out of the bar with her until he had to pull his hand away from hers as the pain of burning flesh became too intense. That was it! “Your ring, let me see it please?” Throwing her hands up, Linda turned on her feet, staring angrily at him. “I knew it, you horrible man! You’re after the ring as payment! Well, I’ll not give it to—“ Ares gripped her shoulders, amazed at how soft she was. Pulling her into his chest, aware that they were still in public, he slammed his lips into hers, inhaling her scent and drowning in the feel of her softness against his hard body. “You’re so right,” he muttered, “I want that ring, but not for payment.” Thrusting his tongue between her lips, she became pliant, her body weak in his strong grip. “Let’s get back to my place, Mr. John Mars.” She turned, still holding one of his hands in hers, and led him back to her vehicle. Ares didn’t want to wait, couldn’t fathom missing out on the opportunity to discover both the ring and her voluptuous body. Even in the car, her stroking the palm of his hands with her fingernails sent sparks flying between them. Leaning over, Ares kissed her at every traffic light, plundering her mouth with his, capturing her attention until cars behind them honked, returning their focus to getting back to her home. Upon arrival, Ares threw open the door and raced to her side of the car. Putting a hand to her chest, she gazed at him with wide eyes. “I hope this isn’t how you treat all your clients, John.” “I told you, only the pretty ones.” He chuckled softly. Her eyes sparkled, twinkles of lust dancing in her eyes. A smile crossed her lips. The color of her lips… “Oh it didn’t matter as long as those lips burned my skin.” Ares thought. 38
SACRIFICE
“We’re acting like two horny kids, you know?” Her lust filled voice held hints of sexuality. He followed her inside the house, observing again the horrid color scheme. “I don’t care. We’re adults. But still, a little black wouldn’t hurt the color patterns.” “You don’t give up, do you?” “I finally got you, didn’t I?” He followed her in the kitchen. Pulling open the refrigerator door, she produced a bottle of wine. “Care for a drink beforehand, John?” “Only if it’s followed by a kiss that leads to bigger things I can drink in.” He grinned, baring teeth. Brushing her hand across his chest, he felt the ring warming his skin. He hoped it was her body heat. “I’d always heard that you were a man of interesting words,” her laughter filled his ears. “The company I sometimes keep is most remarkable.” Ares watched her, made sure she didn’t try to slip anything funny into his drink while she poured the glass of wine. Steadily the wine flowed into the glass before he took it. Pouring herself an equal amount, they raised their glasses together, clinking them before taking a long sip back. The refreshing dry white slid down Ares throat, cooling his already feverish temperature. Setting the glass down on the table, he watched Linda do the same before taking her in his arms, pulling her delectable lips towards his. She opened her mouth, pliant, and ready, her body molding perfectly to his. “The dress needs to come off,” he growled. Huskily, “So does this,” her nimble fingers tugging at his shirt. “To the bedroom?” “Why not the couch, John?” He raised an eyebrow. “Really?” “You’re not acting like your reputation says, Mr. Mars.” “Whatever do you mean?” He lifted her chin, nibbling a trail of fire kisses down to her throat. Sliding the sleeves of her dress over her shoulders revealed smooth, milky white skin. “Touch me,” she murmured, the words half caught in her throat when his lips touched her collarbone. Pushing her back towards the couch, he sat her down. Joining her, he quickly lowered his mouth to her exposed skin, his lips tasting faint perfume and sweet flesh. 39

Arching against his mouth as he nibbled lower, he felt her hands wrapping around his head, fingers rustling through his hair. “I love your curls, Johnny,” she whispered. Johnny? Heat on the back of his head clued him in, he had to get that ring off her finger and examine it. His cock demanded that he strip her and sheathe himself between her tender thighs beforehand. Aching in his trousers, pulsing, he felt a hand slide slowly down his back, heat radiating. Nimble fingers undid buttons on his shirt, fingertips grazing over dark curls of chest hair. “My, you’re quite strong,” she mouthed against his head. “Doll, in my line of work I have to be stronger than the average man.” “Why?” “So I can do this,” he muttered, cupping her breasts. “I like that you did that,” she moaned, her hands smoothing over his rough skin. “You’re all scarred up though. I didn’t know your line of work was so dangerous.” It’s not my line of work, he thought. “I’ve had a few run-ins with dangerous criminals,” he lied. “I like a man with no fear.” “I like a woman with no inhibitions.” Seizing a breast between his teeth, he rubbed his tongue over her pebbled flesh. She groaned, her body bending to his to his will as he spread her out over the couch. His fingers tracing patterns over her soft flesh brought echoes of passion from her lips before her hands cupped his face, pulling him to her. Locking his lips over hers, blanketing her body with his, he slid his tongue between soft, full lips, stroking her mouth muscle coaxing it into his own mouth. He enjoyed how she closed her eyes as he conquered her. Sucking on her tongue while his fingers moved to caress her plump round breasts, he paused. Her touch, her delicate tiny hand on the small of his back was causing him great distress, and he swore he smelled burning flesh. “What’s with you, John?” Breaking from the kiss, Linda’s eyes opened. “What do you me--ouch that hurts!” “Did I hurt a big strong man like you?”

Shifting his weight, pressing his crotch against hers, he felt his body’s desire for her rushing through his veins, a need so powerful that he had to fight his other senses to ignore it while addressing the burning sensation. “Are you a witch?” Forcing him away from her, she stared hard at him. He didn’t like her dismal expression, the way she seemed to pout at not understanding the situation. Funny, he didn’t understand it any better than she did. “It’s the ring.” “What are you talking about, John?” “Don’t look at me like that.” Repositioning himself against the couch, he grabbed her hand, looking at the ring. “The Greek inscription, what does it say?” Yanking her hand away from him, “How am I supposed to know? And you still have not told me how do you know about the inscription?” “Pull it off.” “So you can steal it? Is that why you came home with me? To steal my ring?” “I don’t give a damn about the value of it to you. I think it’s a clue.” “What on earth are you talking about?” She pulled her knees up to hide her embarrassment. “To think I was going to—“ “You still are, honey.” Ares’ overconfident grin was funny even to himself. “You’re a cocky bastard. Get out.” “No.” Standing, Ares knew he looked very intimidating by her timid expression, but she tried her best to be angry. “Get out or I’ll call the police.” “I wouldn’t do that. You’re still a suspect in your father’s murder, remember kid? Besides, it’s just a simple request.” Linda looked at the ring, turning it around in her fingers. She pulled it off. “Catch,” she yelled, tossing the ring at him. He caught it with one hand and dropped it instantly on the hardwood floor. It hit the ground with a clink and rolled a few feet away. “What more do you want from me?” “Each time I come in contact with that ring, I get burned. I want to know what’s going on here.” 41

Tilting her head sideways, she glanced at him. “I think you’ve gone loony.” “Not at all. It would make sense if Hera did this.” Linda’s expression changed from ire to jealousy. “Just who is Hera?” “Who the hell is Hera?” Linda demanded again, shoving her hands into his chest, probably aware that he wasn’t going to move or even feel threatened. Laughing, Ares stood his ground. “We really don’t exist here, do we?” “What are you talking about? Is Hera an ex or something?” “No. She’s a bitch.” Rubbing his thick beard with one hand, Ares closed his eyes and frowned. “So what’s she got to do with any of this, John? And why are you looking like you’re lost in thought? Does she mean that much to you?” “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you, kid.” “Try me,” she spoke with a low tone of disbelief and narrowed eyes. “Pick up the ring.” It was said in a calmer tone. “Why should I?” She turned her head to the side. “Please?” Ares knelt down before her, with eyes wide open. He smiled, weakly. Sympathy was not his strong suit. Adjusting her sleeves again, Linda huffed. “Fine.” She stood, stepping past Ares. Bending over, she picked up the ring off the floor. He licked his lips at the sight of her rounded ass. “Get your mind out of the gutter you pig. You’re not getting any from this woman.” Towering over her, Ares stood at his full height. Smiling, he bent down and placed his lips just inches from hers. “Want to make a bet?” Brushing his lips ever so lightly against hers, he felt her shudder. “Turn the ring so I can see the inscription.” “Fine,” she huffed out. Bringing the ring to eye level she turned it around so Ares could inspect the inner part of the gold. It glittered in the lights, but the inscription caught his eye. “That bitch!” “What are you going on about?”

SACRIFICE
Ares was beginning to hate seeing her scowl. That couldn’t be a good sign. Hot sex with a gorgeous dame, yes. Get his powers back and return to Ancient Greece to kick Hera’s ass, yes. Those two things were on the agenda. Fall in love with a mortal? Hell no! “It says find your true love and the punishment ends.” “I don’t understand.” “Neither do I, babe. I think its Hera’s idea of a sick joke.” “Will you finally tell me who this Hera person is?” Ares laughed out loud, a booming sound that made Linda take a step back. “Tell me,” she demanded. “Relax, kid. She’s not a threat to our little tryst. She’s merely the bitch Goddess of Olympus.” “What?” Tilting his head, “They don’t teach Greek history in your time, do they?” “In my…time?” “Yes. You see I’m not from here, kid. I might as well come clean. I’m Ares, the God of war,” he said, matter-of-factly. “Now I know you’re off your nut.” Putting her hands to her hips, her lips formed a thin line. Glaring at him, she stood as if she were an immovable force. Ares laughed. “I demand to know what’s so funny?” The air was filled with the overpowering stench of roses. “What’s that smell?” she asked, pointing a finger into his chest. Ares sniffed the air. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say it’s—“

Chapter Five
Poof! A shimmering silver pink cloud appeared, dissolving into the form of a beautiful woman. “I think I can help you, hon.” Linda stared hard at Aphrodite. “How did you, I mean, where did you…can someone tell me what the hell is going on?” “You should listen to my brother, Linda. He’s not lying to you.” Turning to face Aphrodite, she tilted her chin up. “Your brother?” “Don’t they teach Greek history in the 1950’s?” Ares scratched his head. “Apparently not, brother.” Aphrodite reached an arm to touch Linda’s hair. She ran her fingers over the other woman’s face, turning to Ares. “She’s in shock.” “No shit?” “I can’t believe what I’m seeing before my eyes. Your skin, it’s so…soft.” Linda stuttered the last few words. “I’m the Goddess of Love, darling. I should hope so.” “Are you here to bring John and me together? Because if so, you’re wasting your time. He’s a cad.” “I know,” Aphrodite winked. “I mean it. He’s been a total ass.” Linda ran her hands through her hair, caught sight of Ares licking his lips. “Hey, you haven’t been ‘miss nicey pants’ with him, either.” Aphrodite frowned. “He’s brought it all on himself.” “He usually does.” “He’s standing right here,” Ares growled, tapping a foot in irritation. Both women glared at him. “Shut up,” they said in unison. Ares held his hands palm out in front of his chest, backing away from them. “Damn you dames.” He scrunched his face and put his hand to his forehead. “Look, can we just get on with how to get me out of this rotten era?” 44
SACRIFICE
Both women looked at each other. Aphrodite spoke first, “You’ll have to bear with us. He’s not used to being a mortal. “Enough with the small talk, sister.” “Yes. Usually he takes what he wants, much as your John Mars does, but what Ares can’t take, he destroys.” “I kinda sensed that from him. But why is he here?” “He pissed off Hera.” “That contemptible bitch!” Ares muttered. Linda looked at Ares. He sighed heavily. “Yeah, I wasn’t around for the full trial, but he stole something from Zeus. The little bitch sun God, Apollo, caught him in the act and tattled. Hera only likes the sound of her own voice so she quickly granted him what he wanted, making my dear little sweet, yet annoying at times, brother, mortal.” “Don’t rub it in,” he poked her shoulder. Linda turned to face him. “Oh really?” “Yeah, he’s harmless. And believe me, he’s far less annoying than the real John Mars.” “Hey!” “So I’ve heard.” Linda crossed her arms. “So you’re just a mortal, like us?” Ares didn’t say a word. “And you threatened me earlier?” “It was for your own good.” He hated how hurt she looked. Out of nowhere the urge to grab her into his strong embrace and protect her welled up inside him. “Aphrodite, we’ve got to get me out of here.” “Why? Feeling things you’re not used to?” Clenching his teeth, Ares nodded. “Good. When this is all over, you’ll be better off.” “What do you mean?” “Oops, gotta go. I just remembered that there’s another couple that needs my help. I’ll see you two lovebirds later!” Snapping her fingers, she vanished before them, leaving her pink cloud to dissipate. 45

Ares stood facing Linda, his eyes focused on her emerald green gems, sure her confusion was reflected in them. “Well,” she reached for his shoulder, her fingers brushing against his skin, still hot, still trembling, “what do we do next?” “We solve your father’s murder case, kid.” The look of shock on Linda’s face couldn’t be plainer. Jaw open slightly, lips parted, eyes wide. Ares didn’t seem to care. Scowling, he turned away from Linda to face the wall. It was becoming harder to feel like his old, destructive self. Time was passing quickly and inside, Ares could feel his body changing. A glance at Linda confirmed his thoughts. “So, what do we do?” she asked. “We, solve that murder case. I don’t know what else to do.” “You dragged me into this,” Linda pointed out. “With this ring, it all makes sense.” “Except I wasn’t born when the ring was given to your father, Miss Westguard.” There it was again, that dashing voice that didn’t quite belong to him. Closing his eyes, he rubbed his forehead. “Think clearly Linda. When did your father get that ring? Do you know where he got it from?” Sliding the ring off her finger again, she turned it to look at the inscription. “There are Greeks on mom’s side of the family but we’ve been out of touch with them for years. We can’t all exactly pop in and out in a pink cloud of smoke like your sister. By the way, do all Gods and Goddesses do that? Because if so, I’d be embarrassed to be the God of w—“ “Skip it,” Ares retorted. “No, we don’t all vanish in a pink cloud of smoke.” Ares let his shoulders droop with a loud sigh. “First things first, we need to help you solve the murder of your father.” “Why?” “Because I feel compelled to help you.” Ares stared hard at Linda. Shaking his head, he threw his hands up. Doing away with the distance between them, he was suddenly in front of her, his body mere inches from hers. “I also feel compelled to kiss you,” he proclaimed, in a husky growl. Startled, Linda threw her hands up to stop him, but it was too late. Pressing his lips into hers, Ares tasted the full sweetness of her mouth. Mingling her tongue with his, 46

he felt her arms wrap around his neck, heard her breathe him in. Ares lifted a hand to her hair, gripping a handful of it and tugging her head back. Exposing her neck, he trailed kisses down her jaw until he’d reached the lower part of her neck by her collarbone. Swirling his tongue over her smooth skin, he felt her shudder against him, felt her hands smooth down his broad shoulders. Her breasts crushed against his chest, his cock grew hard. Stepping into her body, Ares had backed Linda against a wall. Tangling his fingers in her auburn hair, he tugged through the thick strands, running his hand down her neck, along the gentle curve of her shoulders and down to the small of her back. Groaning, he pulled her against him. “This isn’t right,” he muttered between heated kisses. “You don’t seem to care,” she replied, licking his lip with the tip of her tongue. Ares bit her lip gently, she groaned. “I think we should take this to the couch,” he whispered harshly against her ear. “Most men offer me their bed, and I get the former God of War offering me my couch?” “I offered you your bedroom earlier,” he kissed her and started to lead her back to the couch, but she wouldn’t budge. She laughed instead. Reaching behind him, Ares spun her around. “Couch, immediate need,” he growled. Her smile told him everything he wanted to know. Taking her hand, she led him to the couch. Sitting down, he pushed the shoulders of her dress down, exposing creamy white skin, full luscious breasts with beaded nipples. Lowering his head, he took one in his mouth and suckled hard, making Linda arch against his mouth. She cried at his teeth pulling the nipple tighter, his tongue flicking over the tight bead. Cupping her other breast, Ares squeezed it, the rough skin of his palms creating friction against her heated skin. Pressing himself into her, forcing Linda to lean back against the couch, they lay, him on top of her. Grinding his hips into hers, he hissed at the sweet feeling of heat against the thin material of his shirt. “I want you,” he growled, tearing her dress apart and off, displaying more skin. Trailing kisses down her breasts, stomach and lower, he reached the thin triangle of curls. 47

Dipping his head between her parted legs, he licked and kissed the thatch, searching for her slick folds. Her heady scent rose, driving him crazy. Lifting her trembling legs over his shoulders, he looked at her, pretty mouth open. “You really go after what you want, don’t you John?” “My name is Ares,” he growled then dipped his tongue inside her folds. Her breath catching in her throat, she gasped. Exploring with sensual kisses, licks and touches, Ares cupped a breast, his large arm covering her bare stomach. Linda writhed beneath him, legs straining against his head. Ares continued his assault, adding two fingers to probe inside her slickness. Spreading her lips apart, kissing each fold, Ares swept his tongue from side to side, swirled it around and slid it inside to join his two fingers, which were now pumping in and out rhythmically. Linda’s bucking against his face increased; the throes of orgasm nearing. Moaning, calling out his name, Linda clenched her fists, one hand trapped in his thick hair. “Oh god,” her flushed cheeks revealed the beginnings of an orgasm. Ares looked up, saw her pleading eyes. “Oh, don’t stop,” she cried, “almost there.” Ares watched the tension build in her face, throughout her body, waves of delicious torment making her cry. Satisfied with himself, he stood, unzipped his pants and dropped them to the floor. Kicking them away, he straddled her. Barely catching a breath, Linda looked into his eyes and smiled wide. “My,” she let out a delighted sigh, “you don’t waste any time.” “No, I don’t.” Taking his rigid erection in one hand, Ares slid inside of her, both of them groaned out in pleasure. Pulling out completely, he let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. Slamming back inside once again, white heat raced through his body. Pleasure first, then pain followed when her hands reached around him and the ring touched his skin. “Ouch, oh god you’re so tight Linda,” he mumbled against her neck. “I try,” she arched her hips to meet his thrusts, the sound of skin slapping against skin filling the room. Dragging her nails down his back hurt, but he couldn’t stop his thrusting inside her, quick and hard, each long stroke connecting with her clit on an upward roll of his hips. The ring burning into his skin hurt, and drove him into Linda harder, but did 48

nothing to shorten his strokes. He was determined to sate the first burning in his loins. He’d be damned if some stupid shit Hera had created would stop him from coming for the woman he’d grown fond of. Dammit! “Faster!” she yelled, slapping his ass, the sting vibrating throughout his body, the ring burning a spot on his left cheek. “Ouch, goddamn, Linda, oh god and goddess,” his aching, pulsing need drawing his balls against his skin. Linda bit into his neck, the sensation driving him higher, adrenaline racing through his veins. His cock quivered and he slowed his pace, not quite ready to relent to the feelings of ecstasy just yet. “Fuck me,” Linda demanded, wrapping her legs tighter around his waist. The angle he pounded into her at changed slightly, but the effect was still the same: pleasurable beyond all belief. Sweat covered them both, the sound of skin slapping, bodies connecting echoed louder and louder through the living room. Dipping his head to her neck, Ares bit her collarbone, dragging his teeth along the line of her neck while his fingers tangled in his hair. Finding her lips, he plunged his tongue between them at the same time as he pounded into her. His heart beat rapidly, pure bliss. Closing his eyes tightly, Ares saw fireworks, felt his body tense up, annoyance from the damned ring setting in, driving his orgasm faster and faster as tension left his body in one long stream inside her. Panting, he fell on top of Linda, both of them sighing, laughing, breathing heavily together. A thin sheen of sweat covered their bodies and for the first time, Ares felt sated sexually.

Chapter Six
Two hours later, Ares, posing as John Mars, famous Bay Area detective, stood with Linda, Trace along with a few deputies and grunts surrounded the chalked off outline where Linda’s father landed two days earlier. “Mars, are you sure you can put this together as cut and dried as you say you can?” Trace’s skeptical tone annoyed Ares. “You know me Trace. Have I ever let you down?” “No, never. Continue, Mars.” “Let’s review the facts first. One body, found two nights ago on the ground, having fallen from five stories up. No damage other than marks around the back of his neck, right?” Trace flipped through his notepad. “Yup.” “Trace, did you ever get a hold of Steve?” “Yes, he’s on his way here.” “Good.” Ares smiled. “What’s he got to do with this? He’s innocent,” Linda protested. “You’re still fighting this as if it were typical and this wasn’t San Francisco, where people end up dead daily. Think of it this way Linda, your father was a rich man. Detective, did we determine Steve’s profession?” “Yeah, he was a fisherman. Not a wealthy profession, but one that pays the bills.” “Everyone around here knows that, Ar—John.” “You two on a first name basis now? Something up Mars?” “Nothing you didn’t expect from me, Trace. Now, what did a second glance around Steve’s apartment reveal?” “Nothing but,” Trace flipped through his notepad, “Fishing line, a block of cement, other than that, nothing.” 50
SACRIFICE
“Right. Look over there,” Ares pointed at the pile of rubble at the foot of the building that matched the off gray color of the bricks at the foundation. “Did you search the perimeter of the building as well?” “Yeah, more fishing line found.” “All right, so what’s this got to do with Steve?” It was Linda who asked. “Just wait a moment. Steve murdered your father.” “I did no such thing,” a pompous fat man escorted by two uniformed police came to the scene. “I was in the bathroom when he fell off the balcony.” Narrowing his eyes, Ares glared at Steve. Dressed in a dirty white shirt, overalls and boots, the man smelled of fish. A pair of brown gloves hung from his left pocket. He scowled at Ares, his short, fat face looking more panicked than angry. “How did you know that?” “I told the police everything I know. I don’t have to answer to you, John Mars. You’re nothing but a drunken womanizing ass.” Ares had the sudden urge to knock the guy square in the jaw. He wasn’t sure whose urge that was, his or an aspect of John Mars. He refrained. “That may be so, but I can still prove you’re guilty.” “Let’s hear this lie.” Steve demanded. “Yeah, let’s hear this theory, Mars.” Linda arched an eyebrow. The wind blew down the street, blowing her dress close against the slender legs that were wrapped around his waist earlier. “Something called Mr. Westguard’s attention to the balcony. I’d wager my life that it was just pure suggestion since Mr. Westguard was drunk at the time of his death.” Ares smiled. “We were both pretty toasted that night,” Steve chuckled. “But it proves nothing. It’s weak.” “We all know that even though Mr. Westguard was rich, he was also an alcoholic. Big time, see?” “Skip it. Nobody cares about that sort of thing, Mars.” Steve’s face was turning bright red at this point. “Westguard was led to the balcony where a fishing line held up two cinder blocks, the type Steve would use to weigh down things on a boat. The rig was simple, yet strong 51

enough to hold up the weight of the two cinder blocks until something triggered them to fall, say the opening of a balcony door. Only someone skilled in knots could set it up. Someone like Steve here.” Steve sighed. “You’re pretty good Mars.” Linda’s jaw dropped. “Why Steve? You and my father were such good friends.” “I was jealous of the things he had, the connections with other banks, the money, and I thought maybe if he ever let you out, that we’d…” “Oh no,” Linda buried her face in her hands. “Steve, you didn’t…” Ares watched tears slide down her face and moved to put his arms around her. “It’s okay,” he whispered in her ear. “I’m here.” “Boys, throw the book at him and get him out of my sight. John, good work once again.” “Thanks Trace. I think we’re finished here. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to escort Miss Westguard back to her apartment.” Trace winked. “Take care of her. We’ll call if we need anything else. Boys,” Trace turned and walked back towards a blue and white squad car, Steve safely handcuffed. Ares walked Linda down the street, still amazed at his new personality. He never would have cared about the murder in the past, hell he’d have instigated not just the one, but many other murders as well. His pride would normally swell when he thought back to all the tribes and cities he’d conquered, all the men who benefited and served him out of fear and loyalty. Instead, he felt empty. How pathetic. The God of War losing his personality along with his powers, and being trapped in modern 1950’s America. “I’m going to drop you off at home, then go back to my office, okay?” “All right,” she looked up at him, her hair windblown. Her eyes were swollen, the little bit of makeup she had applied earlier had been cried away. “How you doing, kid?” Linda sniffed. “I’ll be all right.” “Okay.”

Chapter Seven
Hours later, the sun had set over the city. A few cars passed on the busy street below Ares’ office. He still hadn’t fixed the door, but nobody had bothered him or even been in the office. He wondered if anyone else actually resided here. Sitting in his chair, feet up on the desk, he closed his eyes. Dressed in a black vest, leather pants and boots, he wondered about his predicament. Sent thousands of years ahead in time where no other gods existed, thrown into an unfamiliar role with no way out, he felt screwed. To make matters worse, there was a damn dame involved with the secret to his freedom on her finger. Neither of them had any clue as to why he kept getting burned by the ancient Greek ring. The scars on his back and ass weren’t as bad as they had been. Before getting new clothes, he had dropped Linda off at home. She insisted that he let her take care of the burn marks and he had let her. It was nice to have someone to care for him. It was comforting. Even heart warming. Goddamn Hera and her stupid complex! Damn woman wouldn’t be anywhere without Zeus, and everyone knew it. Where the hell was his half sister when he needed her? “Aphrodite!” he shouted. Nothing. No poof, no pink glittery cloud, not even a whisper. Leaning farther back in his chair, Ares kicked his desk, the sound echoing throughout the tiny office. The trench coat hung on the coat rack still, along with the matching brown fedora. Standing, Ares walked over, slipped both hat and coat on. A perfect fit. “Damn, I look good in this coat,” he said to no one in particular. He walked down the hallway, outside and down towards Market street. 53

“Hey John,” a loud voice boomed. Ares looked behind him, seeing the large black man from earlier. “Hey, uhh,” “Let’s go for a drink.” “Okay. Just one.” The other man laughed. “Mars, you’re a funny guy. The day you have one drink only is the day I get to use the same bathroom as you.” “Why wouldn’t you use the same…” He remembered the segregation problem the United States still had. “Right.” Twenty minutes later, Ares sat nursing a whiskey and coke in a smoke-filled bar, next to Joe, still depressed. “Mars, what’s wrong tonight? You don’t seem like your usual gay self. The night before last, we had a real smooth time here, boy.” Ares looked at Joe, noted the man’s large stature. His massive, bald head was dark, along with the rest of his skin. Very dark. Ares wondered where he was from but knew better to ask. “Is it a dame?” Ares looked away, swirling the ice in his drink. “I knew it! It’s that dame I saw you with earlier, isn’t it? ‘Yeah, she’s got a hold of my heart, man.” Joe laughed heartily. “The legendary John Mars thinking about settling down?” “Maybe,” his solemn voice annoyed even him. He was the God of…drinking? For no reason at all, Ares looked at his near full glass, then to Joe, then back at the glass again. Raising it to his lips, he knocked the entire thing back in one gulp. The liquid burned cold down his throat, but he signaled the bartender for another. “That’s more like it!” Joe laughed again and ordered another round. Ares knocked the second drink back as quickly as the first. He couldn’t stop himself from ordering a third drink before a flash of hair from beside him caught his attention. Turning to her, he put his hand on her shoulder, “Hello, pretty.” “Smooth talker, Mars.” Great. It seemed as if everybody knew him now. “We’ve met before?” he whispered. 54
SACRIFICE
“You know I’d go home with you,” a hand snaked around his waist before he was spun around to face a brunette with a large chest, dark eyes and ruby red lips. “Trixie,” the other woman turned to face them both, “go home.” “No! I came here for one thing.” “Go get’em, John. I’ll have a drink for you,” Joe laughed heartily again. Raising his glass to Ares, he took one long swig and slammed the glass down on the bar. “Ahh,” he sighed as if the liquid was ambrosia. In the crappy lighting and thick smoke, Ares saw her “I know,” Ares winked at her. Before he realized it, he was walking, stumbling a little down the street with Trixie. His heart weighed a ton in his chest as he realized what he was going off to do. Trixie wasn’t all that attractive, and he wasn’t all that sober. She was really quite plain. What the hell was going on here? “Come with me, big boy.” “I’m all...” his voice caught in his throat. Ares looked at his watch, it was just before eleven p.m. “What’s the matter Johnny?” Her pout annoyed him. They strolled past a theatre playing a new movie involving Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin, along with two other names he barely recognized from his half-sister’s coaching about famous names in this time period. “New movie?” “Yeah. Ocean’s something or other. I hear it’s all the rage. You should take me sometime, Johnny.” “Maybe,” he whispered. Inside his head, his mind was warring with itself. This woman could fulfill the ache in his cock but not the ache in his heart. Temporary pleasure wasn’t worth it. Faking a cough, Ares turned away from her. “Look, doll. Could I take a rain check tonight? I’m not feeling all that well.” “You should let me make you some soup. It’ll warm you up. I know you have that dingy office with the draft. It’s not healthy to keep your office drafty like that.” “Look,” pulling out his new wallet, Ares retrieved a few dollar bills and handed them to her. “Go see that movie and tell me how it was. I need to go see someone.” “Okay, but will you call me later?” “Sure, baby doll,” he lied. 55

Turning away from her, Ares started running, holding his hat on his head, the wind blowing harder the closer he got to the Warf. His head hurt, but his vision was clearing up and the bright white lights on the street hurt his eyes. He’d have to take aspirin once he got to Linda’s. What he wouldn’t give for the ability to teleport himself to her house now. Something inside him felt different. Unique, less like him and more like John Mars. He noticed a flock of seagulls gathering off to his right. Running down the street, he realized with money from the last case he’d solved that he could just take a cab. Thankfully, Linda had left her card with her address and telephone number on his desk. Thanks to Aphrodite, he remembered to slip the card in his wallet before leaving earlier. Stopping completely, Ares caught his breath. His lungs ached and his heartbeat was so quick. The air smelled of brine and salt. The sound of the gulls behind him startled him. Spinning around, he noticed a female who looked familiar in the distance. She walked towards him. Coming into view, Ares realized he needed to turn tail and run. Damn the Gods and the Fates. “You’ll never escape me, Ares. You’re stuck here,” he heard the bitch’s wicked laughter fade the farther he ran from her. A cab pulled up to the curb beside him. “You need a ride, buddy?” “Yes.” Ares caught his breath. Opening the door, he sat down and handed the card with Linda’s address to the driver. “Take me here.” “You got it, Mac.” Arriving at Linda’s door an hour later, Ares knocked loud enough to wake her. It was well after midnight but he hoped she’d be awake still. He figured she was still grieving. He was right. The door opened and Linda stood, dressed in a white negligee. “Hello stranger,” she cooed. “Come to see me?” His cock hardened, tightening the fit of his pants. “Of course. But,” She reached for his wrist, dragging him inside and slamming the door shut. Shoving him against the wall, she locked her lips to his, ran a hand through his curls and 56

inhaled sharply when he reached around and pulled her to him, hands splayed across the small of her back. “I’ve missed you,” she breathed in between heated kisses. Ares groaned, his groin swelling even more at the contact between their bodies. Lifting a leg up, Linda hooked it around Ares’ thighs, the heat from her sex radiating just over his cock. His heartbeat increasing, his kisses down her neck and over her pale shoulders tasted of her sweet scent giving the contact of skin against his lips a delicious taste. A hand cupped her breast, kneading the flesh beneath the thin material of her negligee. Linda groaned, pressing herself into him. “I need you,” he mouthed against her skin. She pulled away, the feeling leaving Ares empty until she tugged him down the hall into her bedroom. Everything was off white, the lamps, tables, sheets on a rather large bed. A glass of wine sat on the table. Arching an eyebrow, Ares looked at the wine glass. “Been drinking much?” “Not until you arrived.” Ares pressed his mouth to hers, sliding his tongue between her pink lips, tasting the tiny hint of alcohol and cherry. Mingling tongues wrestled for control, domination, and then Linda stopped struggling. Exploring her mouth with his tongue, Ares learned every curve of her with his hands, memorized each individual dip in her luscious body, his fingers tangling in her hair. He felt her nails digging into his back beneath his coat. “Take this off,” she tugged the coat. Ares shrugged out of the brown trench coat, tossing it aside. Linda’s fingers found the buttons of his shirt, popped them off. The shirt hung open, exposing his large chest. Hands ran over his smooth skin, fingers pinching his nipples. Her lips locked onto a nipple and Ares let out a sigh between gritted teeth. His heart swelled. He looked down at Linda, her auburn hair hiding her face. His hands circled her ribs, smoothed down the curves of her body over her hips, the softness of the material against his rough hands becoming intoxicating. Linda’s mouth dipped lower, kissing his firm stomach. “I love your body,” she cooed, licking his navel. Ares shuddered, his hands bracing himself on her shoulders. 57

The zipper of his pants slid down quickly and out sprang his cock, hard as steel. “If you do that, I’ll come right now,” he groaned. Heat engulfed his cock, her lips settling at the base of him until she slid him in farther. Sliding out slowly, Ares tightening his grip on her shoulders, his hands resting just below her neck. Her tongue swirled around his cock, caressing the soft flesh beneath the iron velvet rod in her mouth. Ares shuddered harder, bracing himself for the coming orgasm. Linda moaned, licked and teased his head, and Ares became weak in the knees. “I’m losing control and balance,” he uttered, his voice caught in his throat. Popping the head of his cock out of her mouth, Linda looked at him. “That’s the idea.” He could get lost in her beautiful green eyes. Sweat covered his forehead, with each pop of his cock-head out of her mouth, his breathing increased, his heart raced. Ares felt his balls being tugged gently, nails scratching lightly against the soft underside of his engorged organ. “You’re not playing fair,” he muttered, then jerked forward, hips thrusting against her mouth. Working him with a hand, Linda pumped and sucked, slurping loudly on his delicious cock. “That’s it,” she murmured, mouth full of cock. “Come,” and she popped the head of his cock out of her mouth. Ares couldn’t stop himself, his grip on reality had slipped way too far. This beautiful woman was all he could focus on. His body tightening, every muscle and nerve was on fire. One last lick, a kiss above the thick black patch of hair, and Linda stood. “Fuck me,” she whispered. Ares couldn’t help himself. Standing her up, he shoved her against the bed, falling on top of her, mouths locked together. Tongues dancing, flames licking his skin, his hands found the bottom of her negligee and he yanked it upwards, finding her bare skin beneath the thin material. “In you, now!” he growled. Parting her legs, his fingers found her velvety lips, slick with her juices. Taking himself in his hand, he rammed himself into her, hips slapping hard against her skin; she cried aloud at the delicious feeling. Grunting, still slightly drunk, passion exploded behind Ares’ closed eyelids. All he could think about, all he could focus on was Linda. Pleasing her, pleasuring her, her cries becoming louder with each pounding. 58

“Make love to me, Ares!” she cried. Ares complied rolling his hips upwards to stroke her clit while a hand kneaded her now bared breasts. Dipping his head down to nuzzle her neck, his rough whiskers scratched her skin. Her hips rose to meet his, one delicious slap after another echoing throughout her room. Tangled up in each other, Ares loved the feeling of being inside her. His cock quivering, his body tightened like a spring and it hit. The wash of orgasm, powerful come shooting out of him, into her. Ares’ death grip on her hips probably hurt her, but each thrust brought on an orgasm for her as well. Several spasms later, her fingers were stroking his back, running through his hair and cupping his chin. “Shh,” she cooed in his ear. Trembling above her, his body grew cold. “I love you,” he whispered, then fell asleep, rolling off to her side with her still lying in his arms.

Chapter Eight
Hours later, Ares woke up, head pounding. Looking beside him, he saw Linda, naked with the sheet pulled around her chest. An arm draped over the top, another held his hand. Their fingers interlocked, Ares slipped his hand from hers. Something felt different inside him. He wasn’t entirely concerned with going back to ancient Greece as much as he was concerned with maintaining the personality that was him, rather than this John Mars character, who had obviously fallen in love with Linda. Sliding out of bed, he padded to her bathroom, picking up his pants and putting them on before reaching the sink. Her bathroom consisted of a large mirror, a tiny shower and toilet in a tinier room, with a closet off to his left. Numerous creams and bottles sat atop the counter along with a pile of jewelry, none of which happened to be the ring that burned him. Turning on the water, he splashed his face and rubbed it with his hands. Reaching for the towel, he dried his face and went back into the bedroom. Starring at Linda, he thought she was truly beautiful. An angel, almost. Funny, the God of War falling in love with an angel. How cruel were the Fates? “My head,” he reached for the top of his head and walked out into the living room where Aphrodite sat on a large couch, flipping through channels on the television. Dressed in her diaphanous pink gown, her blonde curls spilled over her shoulders and breasts. She was still the prettiest Goddess Ares had ever seen. “You can’t get anything on the damn tube at this hour,” she mumbled before looking at her half brother. “Oh, you’re awake, prince charming.” “Yeah,” he grumbled. “What the hell am I gonna do about this? She didn’t wear the ring last night so I didn’t get burned, but now I can’t find it on her bathroom counter with the rest of the jewelry I saw.” “The ring is gone.” “What?” 60

“There’s a reason for that.” “I figured you’d know something about it. What’s the scoop?” “Funny you should ask. None of us thought you’d make it, least of all Hera. The selfish bitch—“ “What are you talking about? I haven’t changed.” “I saw the look on your face earlier while you slept. You were happy. You love her, don’t you?” “No, that’s impossible. She’s just a—“ “Just a what,” another voice called out from behind him. “Just a…” he couldn’t bring himself to say it. He couldn’t admit to himself that Linda was just a toy like all the other women he’d been with, because she wasn’t. “I don’t know,” he hung his head, shame coursing through him. “Yes you do,” Aphrodite replied. “Linda, come in here please.” “You used me, Ares?” Linda’s perfectly lush body was hidden by a white terry cloth robe. Her hair had been pulled back, revealing her flushed skin, plump lips. Her eyes glittered with tears, burning into Ares’ heart. “You said it yourself, earlier. You loved her.” Linda’s jaw dropped. Ares turned to face Linda. “What was I supposed to say? I mean…yeah. I said that.” A smile lit up Linda’s face before she ran to Ares, throwing her arms around his neck. “You actually fell in love, dear half brother. You actually had a change of heart, and I’m afraid-“ “I what?” Ares exclaimed. “Try your powers, brother of mine.” Ares closed his eyes, holding onto Linda still. A few seconds later, he and Linda along with Aphrodite stood on a beach, just below large cliffs. Waves from the ocean hit the shore, returning to sea to come back and wash the sand. The air smelled pure, unlike the dingy air of San Francisco. Gone were the trench coat, fedora and her house. “Where are we?”

“We’re in ancient Greece, my home,” he proclaimed proudly, roaring with laughter. Arms extended, he shouted at the top of his lungs, “I am the God of war, the greatest amongst all those of Olympus!” “Not so, half brother. You are in fact, faced with a choice.” Ares frowned. “Linda, there are always strings attached to things like this. It’s our culture.” “What sort of strings?” “The usual. He has to choose between remaining here with limited powers restored, or he can continue to live with you, again with limited powers.” Ares looked at the ground. Closing his eyes, he listened to the waves hit the shore. Staring into Linda’s emerald eyes, he saw only one thing. His happiness lay with her. “Linda, if we return to your time, could we live in Greece?” “Are you going to cause trouble there?” Linda asked. Ares shrugged his shoulders. “No more than what I do here.” Aphrodite smacked him. “I’ll visit and make sure he gets in no more trouble other than an occasional bar fight after you’ve forced him into the dog house for being an ass.” Aphrodite and Linda laughed. Ares scowled. “I hear Greece is beautiful back where I’m from. Can we get married?” “Do you love me, Linda?” “I do.”
