Chapter One
Her voice was exquisite. Apollo lay still, letting the rich, dulcet tones wash over him in soothing waves. He had been irritable these past few weeks, tired of the petty rivalries of the gods, longing for something…greater. Then he heard her sing. Her voice had risen to the heavens, her song pure and stunning in its beauty. Apollo’s ear caught it immediately. After all, he was the god of music and light. His sister Diana approached, regarding him with amused sapphire eyes. “Quite a life you lead, brother.” Her full lips were poised between a laugh and a sneer as she raised one slim hand to smooth her mahogany curls. “You spend your hours waiting for her to sing and lie about in ecstasy when she does.” “Do you not hear the divine music?” She gave him a wry smile. “Yes, I hear it, but I am not consumed by it.” He sat up, a glare darkening his features. “Bitterness is ripe on your tongue, my sister. Can you no longer appreciate beauty?” Her eyes narrowed, but she remained silent. “Her voice haunts my sleep. Every morning, when I wake in the darkness to watch Sol drive the chariot across the sky illuminating the earth, I think of her. The light shines for her.” She arched a cool brow, unfazed by his impassioned speech. “You sound like a besotted fool.” Her words struck him, and he paused to mull them over for a moment. “Perhaps, I am.” He gazed into his sister’s eyes, hoping she would see the depth of his feelings. “Yes, I certainly am. I want her. I want to touch her, to feel her life pulse as she sings.”

Diana’s lips thinned into a triumphant smile. “Ah, but you cannot have her. She is a virgin, untouched and under my protection. And you forget, I am the goddess of singers. She looks to me for patronage.” Apollo’s mouth tightened as he considered that. “But, I have as much a right to her as you do. Am I not the god of music?” He sighed. “I must have her. I long for her, Diana, in ways you could never understand.” Ire filled his sister’s gaze at the veiled reference to her eternal maidenhood. “Don’t be ridiculous. You have never even seen her face.” “That matters not.” He closed his eyes as the girl’s song spilled from her throat, pure and sweet. “She is grace itself. I must have her.” *** To my beautiful dove, You may resist now, but one day soon, you will succumb to me, my love… Serena Montefiori’s hands trembled as she read the letter for the third time. Talbot Petersen III was a man used to getting what he wanted, and he wanted Serena. He had pursued her relentlessly for the past few months, since the start of the opera season. Serena sighed, placing the letter on the kitchen table, knowing well she wasn’t the only thing he wanted. She turned to the window; lush green fields stretched as far as the eye could see. He wanted this, her family’s work, sweat, and pride. Talbot’s father, Haslett Petersen, had been a firm friend and business associate of Serena’s family for years, but Serena had met Haslett’s son only recently. Talbot had been away at boarding school during Serena’s childhood and lived with his mother in London. When his father died a year ago, Talbot came to take over the family vineyard. Now he chased after hers. Mimi, her tawny Persian longhaired cat, rubbed about her ankles, distracting her from dour thoughts. Serena bent and picked her up, burying her face in the cat’s fur. What was she to do? Talbot would stop at nothing to have her and her land. *** Apollo woke after a deep, dreamless sleep. Shifting, he groaned slightly at the cramping in his muscles as he opened his eyes. He lay in an immense field of violets, 5

and their powerfully sweet scent intoxicated him. The petals and grass glistened with morning dew, the flowers swaying in the gentle breeze. As he sat up, he realized his skin was damp as well. And he was entirely naked. Apollo shivered when the wind blew across his body. His sister could have been considerate enough to leave him here clothed against the damp chill, but consideration was not one of Diana’s strong points. Rising, he waded slowly through the flowers, the petals brushing gently against his bare skin. The grass was cool and prickly beneath his feet; the freshness of the meadow nearly swept him away. Diana had purposely deposited him on the girl’s property. He walked until he could see her house, a massive Mediterranean style villa with red-tiled roofs and stucco. Through an arched window, he glimpsed a spacious living room. A cat lounged along the back of a white leather sofa, basking in the morning sun that filled the house. She materialized almost out of thin air, stopping him in his tracks. Time slowed and his heart raced as he watched her through the window. Honey blond hair curled around a delicate face; she tucked a strand behind her ear in a little-girl gesture. His breath caught in his throat. She shone with an aura of golden beauty, music and light on earth. Longing seized him…oh, but the Fates were cruel to keep her from him. How old is she? he asked silently, not taking his eyes from her. He heard the smile in his sister’s voice. Twenty-five, but she looks like a young maid of far fewer years, does she not? And you’re honestly telling me that no man has laid claim to her? A woman as breathtaking as this one should have hordes of men panting after her. Oh, many have tried. But she is very shy and hasn’t yet found one who truly captivates her. I will. We shall see. What do you want, Diana? I will give you anything for her. Anything? Anything. Hmm. I shall have to think on this, little brother. I will name my price in due time.

SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
*** Serena Montefiori plays Violetta Valéry in tonight’s performance. Though young, she has starred in numerous pieces thus far… Apollo sat in a private box in the crowded opera house, staring at her picture in the program he held in his lap. Verdi’s La Traviata unfolded before him. He tried to restrain his impatience as he anticipated the moment of Serena’s appearance. Diana had granted him ten days with his siren, ten days to seduce and enjoy her. Then, he would return to Olympus and fulfill the terms of the bargain, regardless of what they were. Diana had not yet revealed what she wanted. The courtesan Violetta swept onto the stage, greeting the guests assembled in her glittering Parisian salon. Apollo gasped at the stunning transformation. She was pure seduction; it was in her face, her red mouth and expressive eyes. The sway of her hips made his cock harden painfully, and his breath grew ragged as he watched her prance across the stage. There was not a touch of the virgin to her. All innocence had dissipated to reveal a cunning, calculating bird of paradise. She appeared to know men better than they knew themselves. The music wrapped around him like a velvet cloak; he surrendered, losing himself in the splendor of Serena’s song. The sensuousness overpowered him. This was bliss. His desire mounted with every note she sang. This moment, the woman before him…it consumed him until he was in her thrall, her utter slave. *** What a fool. Diana leaned back on the cushioned divan, peering into the cloud that formed in front of her. In its depths, her brother made his way through the marbled corridors of the opera house. He stalked past the crowds, confident in his pursuit of the young diva. A black suit molded perfectly to his powerful body, and Diana knew from his past successes that the beautiful Serena did not stand a chance. Apollo would seduce her, and she would fall prey to his irresistible charm. Her lips tightened in envy, having never known a man’s touch. Serena would know soon enough, and Apollo would fulfill his deepest desire. 7

But, certainly not without a price… The others told her she was becoming as jealous as the cuckolded queen of the gods, Juno. But who could blame her? Mortal and immortal women alike adored her brother, while men were terrified of her. Even her father Jupiter, Juno’s philandering husband and the king of Olympus, steered clear when she was in a temper. She was still virginal, and always would be. When she was a child, she had asked Jupiter to grant her eternal chastity. She did not want kingdoms to fall prey to her passion, as happened with her sister Venus. Now she was beginning to understand Venus’s viewpoint, the reason she took such pleasure from the physical. Apollo was free to experience passion with whomever he chose, even one of Diana’s virgins, and she begrudged him every moment with his exquisite siren.

Chapter Two
Serena sat in her dressing room, brushing out the tangles in her hair from Violetta’s costume wig. She’d changed into a pair of simple black pants and a silk blouse; the cast dressed to the nines for their dinners after the show, but she rarely joined them, preferring to go home and curl up with Mimi. A knock sounded on the door as she applied neutral pink lipstick. She sighed inwardly: Talbot. He always asked her to go out with him after performances. His witty repartee, or lack thereof, in Serena’s opinion, would convince her to marry him. She rarely accepted his invitations, nowadays. His presence was far too tiresome, not to mention obnoxious. It was true he sat on the board of trustees and could remove her from the cast. But even Talbot was smarter than that – if he removed her, all chance of her wedding him would be lost. Serena opened the door, attempting to smile. “Hello, Talbot.” “Bonsoir, mon ange.” Good evening, my angel. Serena winced at his awful French accent. “Are you ready?” “For?” He pushed the door wide open and strolled inside without bothering to seek her permission. “Supper. I’ve made reservations at that new chophouse down the street.” Serena tried not to wrinkle her nose; she didn’t eat steak, and Talbot knew it. Still, that didn’t stop him from indulging himself. “I think,” she feigned a yawn, “I’ll have to pass tonight, Talbot. I’ll just go home, and--” He had her back against the dressing table in a trice. “You cannot keep doing this, Serena. What would you do if I turned you out of this theatre?” She sighed, trying not to breathe in; his rank scent was overwhelming. The generous swell of his stomach pressed against her, causing her skin to ripple with undisguised revulsion. Every week he passed the same tiresome routine. She was well 9

used to being hauled into his arms, as he assumed the threat would frighten her. Try as she might to report the harassment, no one listened. Talbot held too much power on the board. As long as he doesn’t hurt me, I can handle him. “Would you really do that, Talbot? Think of the ticket sales you’d lose without me.” It was an arrogant comment, but she relished watching his face mottle with fury. He narrowed his eyes and, grabbing her wrists, shoved her to the floor. Serena shrieked; apparently, she’d spoken too soon. A sliver of fear shot through her belly. This had never happened before. He had never shown outright aggression. She gasped as he lowered himself on top of her, struggling to breathe. “You will marry me. We may be past the age of tainted honor, but you value your purity enough to wed me for taking it, don’t you?” “Talbot, stop.” He had never gone this far before; the thought of him succeeding sent waves of terror through her. She thrashed underneath his ungainly weight, which pinned her to the hardwood floor. His stench overpowered her, the smell of rank sweat and stale food and alcohol. “Stop!” The bulge of his erection nudged her leg through his pants, and her stomach turned with nausea. If he didn’t move, she would vomit all over his straining dress jacket. His closeness was literally making her ill. Suddenly, Talbot flew off her, hitting the wall with a resounding bang. A stranger in a dark suit stood between them, poised for a fight. His presence dominated the tiny chamber; he radiated power. Ignoring the prone man, the stranger reached a large hand down to Serena. Gasping for breath, she glanced at it blankly, her mind still reeling from the shock of Talbot’s attack. She looked up and lost the breath she was trying to regain. Eyes of golden-speckled jade gazed out of a perfectly chiseled face. High cheekbones, straight nose, firm lips, and a deliciously hard jaw. Oh, my… She knew she was staring, but the man was…gorgeous. His large, warm hand clasped her smaller one and pulled her up. Once Serena was on her feet, he stepped back, allowing her to straighten her attire. “Are you all right?” His voice was a deep baritone; ah, she’d always loved baritones. So much more masculine than light, frivolous tenors. “Yes, I’m fine.” She exhaled in bewilderment. “Thank you, sir.” 10
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
“Apollo.” She gave a tremulous smile. “Unusual name.” “So I’ve heard.” Warmth flickered in his stunning eyes. Serena glanced at Talbot over Apollo’s wide shoulder. He had risen and was panting heavily, failing in a clumsy attempt to right his jacket. “How dare you?” His voice was nasal and reedy. Apollo turned to face him. “How dare I? How dare you assault a lady?” “Do you know who I am?” His pudgy face went beet-red with anger and selfrighteousness. “I am Talbot Petersen, and I sit on the board of trustees at this opera house. I can make certain that you never attend a performance at our establishment again.” Apollo raised a condescending brow. “Go ahead and try.” He took a step forward as the other man swung his fist, landing a wild punch on Apollo’s hard jaw. “Talbot!” Serena slipped between them. Not that she’d have minded watching the stranger pummel Talbot, but she couldn’t allow a fight in her own dressing room. She glanced at Apollo; deadly rage blazed in his eyes. If Talbot makes one more move… The more powerful man actually would pound him into mincemeat, no doubts there. But fortunately, Talbot knew when to admit defeat, at least for now. He harrumphed loudly and left the room without another word. “Thank you, Mr.…I mean, Apollo. I don’t know what he’d have done if you hadn’t--” “It’s best not to think of it, Ms. Montefiori.” “Serena.” “Serena. He won’t bother you for some time, yet.” “Wouldn’t count on it,” she muttered, turning back to the mirror. Only to come face to face with Apollo’s reflection as he stood behind her. His potent gaze held her spellbound. Apollo reached up, gingerly touching his jaw; a streak of red was imprinted on his golden skin. “I came to ask you if you’d like to have dinner with me, but after that ordeal, perhaps a drink would be more in order.” Serena sank down onto the plush velvet stool before the vanity. “Yes…yes, I think I’d like that.” The words were out of her mouth before she realized she’d spoken aloud. She looked up in time to see him smile, and then wince when the movement 11

pulled at his jaw. Her brows snapped down in concern. It looked like it hurt. “We should get some ice for that.” He nodded. “Where would you like to go?” “Upstairs? The bar overlooks the city.” The Oak Bar sat atop the opera house, boasting a dark, sophisticated atmosphere. Also, many of the opera’s patrons often gathered there before and after performances. “Ms. Montefiori?” A silver-haired man thrust his hand out, pumping hers. “I must say, you were magnificent. You never cease to mesmerize.” She felt her cheeks heat at the effusive praise. They praised her voice and performance, and though the flattery was sometimes too much for her, she took sincere pleasure in being among people who appreciated her craft as much as she did. “Thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed it.” “Your performance was stunning,” Apollo said softly in her ear. “I meant to tell you in the dressing room…you moved me so deeply, Serena.” His voice rolled over her senses, and her blush intensified. For some reason, the fact that he’d enjoyed her performance pleased her more than it should have. She couldn’t even turn and look at him to thank him, because meeting those eyes was more than she could bear at the moment. Serena led Apollo to the bar. He followed so close behind her, she could feel the warmth of his body at her back. “Is this all right?” she asked as she perched on a brown leather stool. He smiled down at her, and her stomach fluttered. “Splendid. What will you have?” She ordered a sweet white wine and asked the bartender for some ice for Apollo’s jaw. He asked for a snifter of cognac, as well. She took a sip of the wine and smiled as the sweet, familiar taste instantly calmed her rattled nerves. Apollo cocked a brow at her. “What is it, little siren?” Serena felt the blood drain from her face. He couldn’t possibly know, could he? No one knew the truth of what she was, that she was indeed a siren. A true siren, a creature of the sea who attained land and brought men to their knees with her song. “Why did you call me that?” “You sing like a siren; your voice lured me to you.” He looked quizzical, his brow furrowed in a frown, obviously wondering why she was so disturbed. 12
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
Serena attempted to disguise her shock. Of course he couldn’t know. Humans didn’t believe in mythology, so he couldn’t have guessed she was a real siren. The word was nothing more than an endearment to him. “Oh, well…the wine. It’s ours. From our vineyard.” “Ours?” “My family’s. This is Montefiori Reserve.” “Can I have a taste?” She handed him the glass, and he took a sip. Putting down his cognac, he lifted a finger to flag down the bartender. “Another glass of this, please.” Serena giggled. “Like it, do you?” “It’s the nectar of the gods.” Apollo suppressed a grin at the irony in his words. His heart rate was only just beginning to slow from the violent encounter in the dressing room. The last thing he had expected to find was some lout of a mortal trying to ravish Serena. If she hadn’t intervened, he would have torn the man’s throat out. Something about her brought out a fiercely protective instinct in him, an urge to take her in his arms and shield her from all that was dark in the world. “Apollo?” He looked up to find her watching him curiously. “Sorry, I was distracted for a moment. Your family owns a vineyard?” “Yes.” A shadow passed over her face, and he regretted asking. “Lawyers run it now, with the help of my father’s ex-foreman. From my house, you can see the grapes, and people come and tend the fields during the season.” “Which should be soon.” “Very soon, yes. The grapes are starting to grow heavy on the vine.” “Do you mind if I ask why you don’t run it?” She stared into her wine, remembering the many conversations she and her father had about that very subject. “By the time my father died, I’d already started my opera career, and he always said he didn’t want me to give it up just for his company.” “He has no one else?” Serena looked away, as if embarrassed. “I’m an only child, and my mother…well, she left when I was a baby.” He touched the small of her back in sympathy. “I’m sorry, Serena. I should not have interfered.” 13
Lily Ashford
She shrugged. “It’s no big secret, anyway.” “So lawyers will run it until you find a buyer?” He did not move his hand, and she didn’t try to pull away. “Yes, and there have been inquiries.” “From?” “Talbot.” He nearly choked on his wine and set the glass on the bar with a thump. “I beg your pardon?” “Talbot wants to marry me because his lands border ours. If we wed, it’d be easier for him to gain control of Montefiori, and he’d run both vineyards.” “And he thinks forcing you to sleep with him is going to persuade you?” She sighed. “Apparently, yes. Rather seventeenth century of him, isn’t it?” He fell silent; for a few moments, neither spoke. Apollo cleared his throat, abruptly changing the subject. “I noticed you didn’t join the rest of the cast, tonight.” “For dinner? I never do. I usually just go home.” She shrugged. “Boring, really.” A small smile tugged at his lips. “You? Absolutely not.” He drained his glass and stood, offering his arm to her. “Come, shall we walk?” “Where?” she asked, slipping her hand in the crook of his elbow. “Anywhere.” They strolled through the vast theatre, admiring the carved marble statues, gilt ceilings, and regal columns. A melodious bell recalled them to the entrance of the building, as the hour was late and the opera house was closing for the evening. “It’s a beautiful evening,” Apollo said. “We may as well wander.” Serena smiled, glancing up at the starred sky. “I have nothing against wandering.” The words flowed from her lips almost without her knowledge. She usually didn’t do such things with a man she’d met only an hour ago. But with this man…the attraction was immediate and powerful. His deep voice broke through her scattered thoughts. “So, how long have you been singing?” “Since I first learned to speak. I can’t remember one without the other. I studied vocal performance in college and finished classical training by the time I was twentytwo.” 14
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
“Well, you are very talented for one so young. Most female voices don’t mature until the late twenties, I’ve heard.” “Yes…that’s true.” Her voice had always been intoxicating, and her vocal maturity had come much earlier than a full-blooded human, but he didn’t need to know that. “Are you musical? Your voice is suited to singing, too, I think.” He smiled. “I’ve sung in my day, yes.” To prove it, he sang a few bars from one of Alfredo’s father’s parts in La Traviata, as Alfredo himself was a tenor role. Serena turned to him and smiled. “That was lovely. You really should audition for us, sometime.” He chuckled, not taking his gaze from her mouth. “Apollo. Why did your parents choose that name?” He gave her a wounded glance, his dancing eyes belying his hurt. “Are you implying you don’t care for my name, madam?” “No, no, I like it, but it’s a strange name for a child. I can think of an endless variety of Greek god jokes.” She couldn’t suppress a giggle. “Roman, too.” “Huh? Oh, of course. The Roman name, as well.” He gripped her wrist to stop her. “And what makes you think I’m not him?” She pursed her lips in skepticism. “The god?” “Yes.” “Well, it’s a myth.” Her mirth ebbed at that thought. Sirens were also creatures of legend, but she was evidence of their existence, so... “I don’t suppose it would be impossible…” Apollo glanced about them before pulling her into a narrow alley. “Shall I prove it to you?” Before Serena could answer, he cupped her hips in his large hands and leaned down as if to kiss her. Her eyes closed in anticipation of his lips…she could feel his breath on her face. An electric shock passed through her body, apparently not from the potency of Apollo’s touch. When she opened her eyes, they stood on the deck behind her house, the soft lights casting a glow on his face. “But--what did you--oh, my.” Serena was surprised at the sudden change of location, but not quite shocked. He hadn’t lied. She had grown up with enough of the 15

paranormal element in her life to accept his assertion of godhood. Since the moment she could speak, she could sing, and her father had kept no secrets from her. Proudly, he’d detailed her abilities and special talents, never once speaking ill of her mother, though her leaving caused him pain. “So you really do pursue mortal women, just as the myths say.” “Well, I am not nearly as spiteful as the legends insist.” Apollo grinned down at her, mirth flashing in his eyes. “But I’m every bit as mischievous.” He glanced behind him at the lush, moon-kissed fields. “This is charming.” “I know.” She smiled. “When my father was alive, he and I used to come straight home after performances and sit out here together.” A bittersweet pang of nostalgia reverberated through her. “I especially miss him when the grapes are near picking. He loved this place so much.” “Do you mind my asking what happened to him?” Serena looked up. “Oh, he had me rather late, so he was over seventy when he passed away.” “I’m sorry.” “Don’t be.” Apollo raised a hand to her cheek, and she closed her eyes in anticipation. His fingers brushed her skin lightly, heating her blood. She stepped away from him abruptly. What was this? He drew her to him as no man ever had before… “Where are you going?” She peered at him as he nodded to her and turned towards the vast expanse of meadow. A smile touched his sensual lips, and a strange tingle simmered through her. “I suppose I shall retire in the fields. The violets will make a fine bed.” Her eyes widened for a moment before she caught his meaning. Did she dare? There was plenty of space for him in her home, but she had never lived alone with a man, save Daddy. After a long hesitation, she came to a decision. “Come inside. I have room to spare.” “Thank you.” He didn’t argue, merely followed her into the house, as if he had expected her invitation. She led him through the living room and into the spacious, vaulted foyer. A curving wooden staircase stood to one side, and she ran her hand along the banister as they mounted. Tiny images of mermaids and spirits were etched into the wood, part of 16

her heritage. She smiled as she recalled his endearment. He’d called her a siren, little knowing the truth. Or did he? He was an ancient god; surely, he knew of her kind, just as she knew of his. Humans believed sirens were birdlike creatures, with wings, no less. Serena smothered a laugh at the utter absurdity of the grand legends. Apollo must know better, though he must have wondered why she displayed such little surprise. At the top of the stairs, she turned down a corridor to her right. Stopping in front of a door, she glanced at him. “You may take this room for the time being. Good night.” “Serena, I have watched you from Olympus, listened to you sing, day after day; I’ve dreamed of you night after night.” He took a deep breath, his eyes pleading. “Do you know how much I desire you?” Her lips fluttered open, but she closed her mouth and swallowed before she could speak. “I am not unaware of a man’s desire, Apollo. But I suppose I…I’ve never thought myself ready.” “No?” All right, so that wasn’t entirely the truth. I felt a spark of—something the moment he had walked into the dressing room… Not only was he a guest, but also, it would hardly be proper to surrender to him two hours after meeting him. His desire would wait.

Chapter Three
“I’ll see you tonight. Help yourself to anything in the house.” Serena flitted about the kitchen, feeding Mimi and cleaning up the breakfast dishes. Apollo sat at the table, still wearing his suit from last night. “Do you want me to go into town and pick up some clothes for you?” He shook his head, placing his teacup in the saucer. “I shall do it, myself.” Putting the bag of cat food down, she glanced up. “How?” Apollo smiled. “How did we get here, siren?” “Oh, of course.” She turned as Apollo rose, stalking toward her. “What is it?” she asked, though she already knew from the fire in his eyes. “A parting kiss.” She reached out, touching his nearly healed jaw, playing the fool. “Does it still hurt?” He evidently had no patience for that, because he hauled her against his chest and gazed into her eyes. Her breath came faster; yes, he really was going to kiss her, this time… Or not. His lips brushed hers in a chaste peck, and he ran a large palm over her backside before stepping away. She stared at him, dumbstruck. An unfamiliar weakness passed through her body; she clutched the edge of the counter for support. “You’d best go, siren. I only wish I could come and listen.” “Why don’t you?” Amusement lit his eyes. “I’m not properly attired.” She picked up her purse, still shaky. “Well, enjoy yourself. I’ll see you soon.” After the sound of the engine faded away, Apollo leaned over picking up Mimi. The truth was he couldn’t bear to be around Serena while she sang. Her music inflamed him far too much for him to refrain from reaching for her, and she was untouched, 18
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
without doubt. He wanted to stoke her desire to the boiling point before he took her; he wanted her begging him, pleading to be filled. Only then would he succumb to his fierce desire. *** “Take it again from the beginning.” The vocal coach stood off-stage left, in the wings, and Serena nodded, acknowledging his direction. She looked down at the music and began again, sight-singing through the entire song. La Traviata was finished with its regular schedule for the season. As of today, rehearsals were dedicated to another Verdi masterpiece, Falstaff. Serena played Alice’s impish daughter Nannetta. As she sang, thoughts of the man she’d left at home whirled in her head. That near-kiss, the glorious scent of him, so close… She gave herself a shake. What was wrong with her? She had known him for less than a day, and already, she could think of nothing else. This is absurd. But that knowledge did not stop her mind from creating delicious fantasies about what a man would be like, for the first time… What having him inside her would feel like… Her breasts went heavy at the thought. How much longer until her siren’s lust defeated her human sense? And the worst of it was, she felt no dread. She felt nothing but heated anticipation. *** How had he breached Serena’s home? He was living with her! Diana sneered at the scenes before her. Ridiculous. He would take her in no time, and then she would no longer be Diana’s to guard and keep. She scoffed, leaning back in her chair as she watched her brother in the vision. Before long, Serena would belong to Venus, the goddess of love. But now, Diana knew what she would take for her part of the bargain. A hint of a smile touched her lips. Imprudent of her brother to enter into an agreement without knowing the terms. But his lust was so overpowering, he could not think straight. 19

And he would surrender that which fueled his desire. Poor fool. *** Apollo strolled down the hall toward his room. The estate was beautiful. He’d had a good look around in Serena’s absence, and the soft breeze caressing his nude body had refreshed and delighted him. The only problem was Serena’s absence. The entire day would have been far richer, had she been there to share it. And if he’d convinced her to sing for him… His cock responded to that thought immediately, rising and hardening like the devoted slave it was. Sometimes he was truly amazed at the mind’s control of the body. Lust and desire were far more than physical. Reaching his room, the tip of his cock brushed against the cool doorknob. Apollo winced as the sensation sent a jolt of shock through him. He heard a gasp behind him. Serena stood at the end of the hall, wide-eyed and blushing pink. “I’m…sorry, I had no idea that you…” She waved her hands in his general direction, obviously referring to his state of undress. “It was a lovely night, siren. Clothes were unnecessary.” “Oh, I...see.” She had marginally regained her composure, still appearing a bit unsteady. Her eyes glazed when they landed on his erection; he turned to give her a better view, knowing he was wicked and not caring a whit. Serena inched closer, her eyes never leaving his cock. A strange curiosity flickered in her pale eyes. But the question she asked next sent shock through his veins. “Can I…can I touch it?” Please! His body begged for her touch. Unable to speak, he merely nodded. Her delicate fingertip skimmed his engorged tip, and he gripped the doorknob, clenching his jaw in vain as a soft groan escaped his taut lips. His reaction was enough to drive her away. Serena jumped back, startled. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” “It…it didn’t hurt,” he said through gritted teeth. “Oh, well, I--” He moved closer before even registering his own actions and his mouth cut her off mid-sentence. She tasted so sweet…sweeter than any nectar the gods could provide. Serena went completely motionless, and he pressed harder against her lips. Her hands 20

clasped his neck, her soft curves molding to his body. His cock became so rigid he groaned in her mouth. Pulling away, he stared at her, on fire for her touch. Her tongue slowly trailed along her lips, her gaze riveted on his cock. The daggers of heat in her eyes drove him wild, and he gasped, aflame with desire. But he couldn’t go any further. Not yet. Not until she decided it was time. He wasn’t a boor; no woman would ever be forced on his watch. When she was ready, she would come. *** Apollo slipped inside his room, leaving her alone in the hallway. A low moan rumbled from behind his closed door, and her skin suddenly felt prickly and warm. Was this desire? No man had ever ignited it in her, before. But if it was as hot and tormenting as her sisters assured her, this had to be the beginning. She turned slowly, walking back to her own chamber. Images of him assaulted her: his bulging cock, the expression on his face when she’d touched him…the feel of his lips on hers. That kiss had taken her off guard; never had she dreamed a man could taste as scrumptious as Apollo. Her thoughts drifted back to his shaft…his magnificent, enormous shaft. She glanced down at her hips; she was rather small. How would he fit? Would he break her? She couldn’t imagine that massive, pulsating thing entering her body. And yet, it fascinated her. In the moment she had touched it, it had throbbed and scalded her like a living creature. Entering her room, she shut the door and leaned back against it, her body tingling, causing sensations she’d never known before. Sliding down to the floor, she lifted her skirt and touched a hand to the throbbing place between her legs. Instinct drove her to try and ease the odd feeling, but she needed something more. Her fingers came away coated with sticky wetness, and the brush of her hand made her hips rise and her skin heat. She sighed, impatient with herself. She was tired of being pure and virginal; her true nature was darker, more sensual. Her mother had left when Serena was a child, flitting from lover to lover, never remaining with a man for long. And Serena didn’t want to become obsessed with pleasure, as tended to happen to sirens. Serena was only halfsiren and she often thought her reservations came from her father’s mortal blood. Her

human half was far less daring…but one day, she was sure something might come along and overpower it. If she was considering sleeping with Apollo, wasn’t it already? Was she to remain untouched forever? Her mother, and any other siren, would have succumbed to Apollo’s seduction without a second thought. What was she waiting for? All her life, Serena had promised herself she would not give in unless she burned with desire…and now, flames surged through her veins, consuming her. She longed for him, craved his body, the only thing that would assuage the ache between her legs. Apollo was flawless, incomparable. She wanted him. And really, there was no point in fighting it. If she didn’t fall now...a chance like Apollo might never come again. Rising, she rummaged in her wardrobe for a silk shift and changed into it. Mimi was already perched on top of the pillow; Serena moved her as gently as possible, eliciting an irritated yowl from the cat for her trouble. With a sigh, Serena sank into the soft bed, relishing the cool sheets on her hot skin…though they only remained cool for a moment. Turning out the light, she resigned herself to a night of hot torment and longing.

Chapter Four
The next morning, Serena woke from passionate dreams. All night long, he had appeared before her, beckoning, begging to possess her. She wanted that possession. She rose from the bed, and Mimi crawled into the warm hollow her body had left, taking no notice of her mistress’s torment. Serena tossed the cat a smile while pulling on a white silk robe over her short nightshift. Before she could change her mind, she hurried out of her room and down the corridor. Sunlight danced on the wood floors. It was just past dawn, and fresh, scented air, tangy with grape, wafted through the open windows. Standing in front of Apollo’s door, she hesitated. Do I really want to do this? Did she really want to learn the secrets of his body? Her own body gave an overwhelming response in the positive, and she turned the knob. Light was just beginning to spread across the room, hovering at the edge of the bed. Still, she could still see him clearly in the pale glow of early morning. The blankets had slipped off during the night, and he was bare, save the sheets tangled with his muscular legs. Even his shaft was at rest…she contemplated it for a moment. It didn’t look so imposing in this state. His chest rose and fell with every breath, and she crept closer. Reaching out, she laid a hand against his knee, not sure if she should wake him. And gasped. Before her eyes, his cock stiffened. It rose like a towering cobra, and he moaned. “Oh, Serena…please…” Her gaze flew to his face. Only to find his eyes closed and his breathing, though slightly labored, still in the steady rhythm of slumber. He was talking to her in his sleep? Was he dreaming of her? Her cheeks heated, and she shook his shoulder. “Apollo? Apollo, wake up.” “Hm?” His eyes opened, and she stepped back. The onslaught of emerald was far too potent for such an early hour. “Serena? Oh, gods. That really was you?” The grogginess dissipated from his deep voice as he put the pieces together. 23

She nodded, her gaze returning to his fully erect shaft. “Well, thank you.” Apollo grinned. “Marvelous thing to wake up to.” Serena smiled tightly, wanting to speak before she lost her nerve. “Apollo, I…” “Yes?” “I want to learn.” She glanced at his body. “Can you teach me how to please you?” Her voice trembled. In an instant, he pulled her onto the bed beside him, his arms tight around her waist. “I don’t think anything would make me happier, siren.” Her head was tucked under his chin. “What should I do?” “Touch me, anywhere you like.” She sat up and, for a moment, merely stared at his body. All that delicious golden-bronzed skin and hard sinew bared to her sight… He wasn’t moving, and still, his muscles rippled with coiled strength. After hesitating for a moment, she reached out and touched his shoulder, running her hand down his solid chest and ridged stomach. The jade eyes closed, and he leaned back against the pillows. Her other hand caressed his bicep; she marveled at his beauty. Leaning over, she kissed his forearm, smiling when gooseflesh appeared on his skin. Her lips moved across his stomach; she felt him tense as she neared the most sensitive part of him… Removing her mouth, she looked down. His immense shaft stood waiting; she lightly brushed it with her fingertips. Apollo flinched, and the power she held suddenly became clear. She closed her hand around his cock, and he gasped. His gasp became a grunt when she moved her fingers, and pressing his sac gently elicited a groan. Serena was amazed; she could manipulate his body any way she wanted to. “Touch me, siren--please… I’ve wanted you for so long…” His deep voice was filled with such pleading that she could not deny him. Wrapping her hand about his cock, she squeezed; he gasped, raising his hips into the air. A thrill went through her. She had never explored a man’s…manhood, before. She’d never fondled it, and certainly never tasted it. But now…she could do anything with Apollo. She pulled the belt off her robe and examined it carefully, turning it over and over in her fingers. She wanted to give him pleasure such as he’d never had… But that was impossible. He was a virile, potent man; surely his lovers ranked among the most talented. Her eyes narrowed. She was not the most experienced of women, but she yearned to please him. 24
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
Serena looped the belt around his aching shaft, tying it tightly. Apollo gasped sharply at the feel of the cool, smooth silk on his scalding skin. The sensation sent powerful shudders through his body; every nerve ending tingled with awareness. His muscles quivered. The tip of his cock swelled to an enormous size, and he felt his face contort with a pleasure so intense it was painful. Serena tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as she gazed at him, hesitation evident in her eyes. What was she going to do? He didn’t have much time to wonder. Leaning down, she gently swept her tongue across the swollen head of his shaft. He drew a sharp breath at the heat of her mouth. The combination of the warmth and cold made his cock tighten even further. Spirals of pleasure radiated through him. “Serena…” His voice was choked and pleading. “Do you like it?” “Yes. Yes, oh…” He gasped as she licked him again. Her tongue stroked the head of his shaft, lapping at him like a cat. Slowly, he eased his hips up, sighing as her hot, wet mouth closed around him. She took the hint, sliding her lips over him, tentatively sucking. He grew larger and larger in her mouth, but she did not release him. Serena sucked harder, as if she were savoring him…as if he were some delicious candy she wanted to devour. He couldn’t help wondering if she really was a virgin. Virgins did not possess such skill… Apollo drew a laboring breath, longing to arch his back and take his release, but he couldn’t, not while her mouth surrounded him. “Stop,” he panted. “Why?” “Please...” She moved away obediently, her eyes wide as she watched him. Unbearable heat flooded his body, and his muscles tensed in anticipation. A deep groan rumbled through his chest as he lifted his hips off the bed. When his cock burst, hot liquid splattered onto his stomach and the sheets. He opened his eyes and groaned again, softer this time. Serena knelt beside him, placing her hand on his forehead. “I--I’ve never seen anything like that, before.” He smiled and stroked her cheek. “I wager you haven’t, my beauty. I intend to show you a great many things you’ve never seen.” After swiping the stickiness from his skin with a corner of the sheet, Apollo pulled her down beside him and took her in his arms. Her warmth along his body felt so good, he vowed never to move again. 25

Serena lay cradled in his embrace, dazed with what she’d just seen. She, Serena Montefiori, had caused such a reaction in the god of the sun? Is it possible? “Serena…” His voice reverberated through her body. Something hard nudged her thigh, and it took her a moment to realize his shaft was stiff, again. Her eyes widened. Was that possible? Looking down, she saw the evidence of his lust. Oh, dear, anything is possible with Apollo. “I want you, siren. I want to feel you around me.” He shifted, and she glanced up. Jade fire scorched her…he was still unfulfilled. From the demanding passion in his kiss the night before, she knew he wouldn’t be satisfied until she had given herself to him, body and soul. Her siren’s blood urged her on…let him take you; let yourself be swept away… Her human half tried to argue: are you ready for this? Can you really do this? Strong fingers trailed down her stomach until they reached her feminine core. When his hand brushed her hot skin, the siren conquered the human, and she moaned with pleasure. His thumb massaged her sensitive nub, sending shocking spirals of sensation through her. Her eyes widened at the combination of pleasure and pain. She felt her own arousal seep from her body as he touched her. An ache throbbed between her legs, more keen than she had ever felt before. Turning to her, he seized her mouth in a predatory kiss and rolled her onto her back in one smooth motion. His firm lips on hers made her moan, but his hard body crushing her to the bed stole her breath so the sound came out in a whoosh. His hand moved faster. Serena tightened her legs around his hand, trying to heighten the pleasure. Apollo’s head snapped up and he groaned, his fingers stilling on her slick bud. After a moment, he slid a finger inside her. Serena threw her head back on the pillow, gripping his broad shoulders with shaking hands. He gently stroked her, eliciting a whimper from her lips. She arched her hips into his hand, needing more. “Apollo…” She didn’t know exactly what she needed, but pressure was building within her, and if it wasn’t released soon, she would either explode or die. “Shh, patience, siren. I know what you want.” He whispered tenderly in her ear. “You want this, don’t you?” Serena held her breath; he removed his hand and replaced it with his shaft. Apollo entered her carefully, but it still hurt. When he broke the thin proof of her virginity, it burned like nothing she’d ever felt before. Gasping, she hugged his neck, 26

burying her face in his warm shoulder. He didn’t move, allowing her body to grow used to the intrusion. Slowly, very slowly, he began to thrust. Her muscles tensed, anticipating pain. But it was less, now. His cock slid into her body and remained there for a beat before withdrawing. She felt the tautness in his muscles, saw it in his face. The effort it cost him to hold back was palpable, but he refused to succumb to his lust. The pain began to ebb, giving way to pleasure. The yearning built and expanded. Warmth spread through her body, rising to an intolerable heat. Her skin grew damp as he pushed himself inside her; she was climbing toward…something…the ecstasy intensifying with every thrust. She drew a ragged breath, clenching her muscles around his cock. Apollo groaned, pressing his cock deeper. She was so tight, so sodden…her juices soaked his shaft, the sensation causing him overwhelming pleasure. Out of the heavy air, a song rose from her throat. A strange, haunting melody he felt he should know by heart, but had never heard before. He began to thrust to the lilting, hypnotic rhythm; it was as if he lost all control over his own body. His cock hardened further, and the force within him built to a fever pitch. Serena’s hips rose to meet his strokes, and her nipples rubbed against his chest. He tasted his release…but he would not give in. Not until Serena had gained her fulfillment. Lowering his head, he nibbled along the column of her lovely neck, activating all of her most sensitive points. One hand slid down, pressing gently on her clit as his cock filled her. Her song melted into a scream as she came, the hot gush of liquid drenching his hand. Her beautiful face was rapt with ecstasy, and she squeezed him fiercely with both her arms and legs. Even her screams were musical, and the frenzied sounds drove him wild. The pleasure was so sharp his control shattered. The invisible force took hold of him as his cock exploded, and he shouted, intense bursts of bliss causing his body to convulse violently. He thrashed atop her, his muscles jerking and bunching. Struggling for breath, he turned to Serena, who lay limp beneath him. Triumph surged through his veins…she was his. She belonged to him. She had trusted no one else to possess her, and that knowledge caused a deep and profound joy in his heart. He would not disappoint her trust. Whatever Diana’s provisions were, they were worth it. 27

Chapter Five
Serena stood in her dressing room. Rehearsals for the day were finished, and she was getting ready to go home to Apollo. She smiled. Just knowing he was waiting for her sent blissful warmth through her entire body. Last night, he had brought endless pleasure. Now she knew why her mother had become obsessed with men. She had no intention of that, of course, but Apollo rendered her helpless. “Well, well, if it isn’t the house harlot.” The nasal voice rang in her ears, and with a gasp of surprise, she spun around to face Talbot. His plump face was mottled red with anger. “I beg your pardon?” His eyes narrowed, making his beady gaze appear even more snake-like. “I saw you leave with that playboy. You wouldn’t let me take you, but I imagine you begged him.” “Talbot, you cannot speak to me—” “I certainly can and I will. I hold your fate at this opera house in my hands, remember?” His thin lips twisted in a frown of displeasure. “Perhaps you should be let off, Serena. I can’t have our performers causing scandals, now, can I?” “It’s hardly a scandal!” “No? I heard he’s living with you. How long have you known him -- a few days?” “I—” “And it’s obvious you’ve slept with him. You’ve been glowing since the night you met him.” His voice rose. “Rented bodies are a dark stain on opera’s past, Serena. Singers may have solicited protectors in centuries past, but we no longer encourage whoredom.” She was so shocked she could barely form a coherent thought. “How--I’m not…” “You are. And I should throw you out for it, your talent aside.” He raised his hand, and Serena flinched, anticipating a slap. 28
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
“I would not suggest that.” Apollo’s deep voice floated toward her from the doorway. The patches on Talbot’s cheeks darkened to a dull crimson. “You.” “Me.” His voice turned soft and deadly. “Did I see what I thought I just saw? Were you preparing to hit her?” “I--I--” He straightened, looking Apollo in the eye. “What would you do if I said yes?” In an instant, Apollo stood in front of him, his large hands encircling Talbot’s thick neck. The other man choked and struggled to breathe, his face turning from red to purple. “Then things could become very difficult for you, my friend. Especially considering the fact that I walked in on an attempted rape the other evening. The press would revel in destroying your precious reputation.” Talbot wheezed for breath. “You wouldn’t…you wouldn’t dare.” “Watch me.” Apollo’s voice was low and deadly. “I do not make idle threats, and I have sacked cities and peoples on a whim. Do not anger me further.” “But--” Apollo stopped Talbot from speaking with a stern shake of his head. Apollo lowered his head to look Talbot in the eye, flipping the man’s chin up so his face caught the light. “Now, listen to me. I am giving you twenty-four hours to disappear. I will purchase your vineyard if you wish and compensate you fully for your remaining duties here until the end of the month. But you will leave Serena in peace.” He raised a brow and nodded at his quivering captive. “Is that understood?” “Yes, yes, I understand. Release me!” Talbot gasped. Apollo released his hold, taking a step back. Serena put her hand on his arm, and he touched her fingers in gentle reassurance, but his lethal gaze never left Talbot. Talbot swept his eyes over Serena in disgusted disappointment. “And to think I wanted to marry you. You’re nothing but a slut.” Apollo’s growl of warning sent him from the room at a gallop. Turning to her, Apollo gathered her in his arms. She drew a breath, shaken. “How is it you always come to the rescue?” He smiled. “I can’t help it, siren. No one will hurt you on my watch.” Serena sighed. “Do you think anyone else will believe those things he said? Am I--”

“A harlot? I think not. Merely a lush, passionate woman who enjoys her body,” he whispered. “And there is nothing wrong with that, siren. Never be ashamed.” She smiled against his ear. “Who said I was ashamed?” Apollo gave a surprised laugh. “Is that how it is?” Serena pressed her lips against the side of his neck in response. He sucked in a breath and lifted her in his arms. “Well, we shall have to make good use of that, then, won’t we?” He slung her over his shoulder and slapped her derriere. “Apollo! What if someone sees us?” “I don’t see anyone here. Come on, Serena, it will be an adventure.” She didn’t reply as he strolled down the corridor, though both her curiosity and desire mounted. His muscles rippled beneath her stomach, sending waves of pleasure to her core. He stopped to push a door open, and when he closed it behind him, she gasped. The stage lay open before them. “Here? You want to…” Her eyes fell on Nannetta’s swing. She stared at it for a long moment before turning to him, wondering if he could possibly mean to… He did. An amused grin lit his jade eyes. “I want to taste the Queen of the Fairies.” “But…” “Adventure, siren,” he reminded her, resting a finger on her lips. She closed them and kissed the finger. Striding across the polished stage, he placed her on the swing. In the blink of an eye, their clothes vanished, and he stood before her in his naked glory. The usually harsh lights only emphasized the perfection of his body. The expanse of smooth golden skin and rippling muscle made her mouth water. Molten lava blazed in his eyes; his sculpted lips fell open, and he leaned toward her. Serena moaned at the taste of his kiss. He lifted her again and sat down on the swing, setting her on his lap. Shifting, he buried his cock within her body; Serena cried out against his mouth. His throbbing shaft pierced her to her very core, the tip reaching so deep inside that the pleasure nearly made her come. Apollo groaned in her ear, and a rush of moisture soaked their joined bodies; her voice made him burn with desire, and his voice did the same for her. As a true connoisseur of music, she relished his deep moans. Longing to hear another, she moved her hips to draw him deeper and was richly rewarded. 30
SONG OF THE SIREN – SONS OF ZEUS
His hips jerked involuntarily, causing the swing to move back and forth. Serena’s legs encircled his waist; she released his shoulders and grasped the ropes of the swing to keep from falling. As they thrust in unison, the reality of the situation struck her. She was making love with an ancient god in a place where they could be spied at any moment. His mouth left hers and traveled across her throat and shoulder. She leaned down and pressed her lips to his neck; he tasted so good, she sucked on his skin. Apollo gasped, and she nipped him lightly with her teeth. His arms tightened their hold as he surrendered to her; she licked, bit, and sucked furiously. Apollo’s climax seized him abruptly. He tilted his head to the side, staring at her in wonderment. Inside her, his cock erupted, and a long bellow issued from his lips, the deep and silken sound as magnificent as any ever heard on this stage. Her sheath pulsated steadily, as if pumping his convulsing shaft empty of seed. The feel of him exploding within her caused a hot bliss so keen she shrieked, clutching his body as she came. The seat swung wildly as shudders wracked them. Afterward, Serena lay sated and replete in his arms. Never had she felt so treasured, so utterly cherished. He both protected her and pleasured her. And she realized…she was beginning to feel far more than desire for this man who had freed the siren within. Because of him, she had learned not to be afraid of herself, of what she really was. Apollo was teaching her to savor pleasure. The danger of obsession that had haunted her all her life had taken an unexpected form in a deeper emotion. Her mother was full-siren; her desire had consumed her love, but for Serena, the two were linked in an endless circle. She cared for Apollo, and she craved his touch. And from the way he gazed at her, now, it was plain he reciprocated. *** Diana watched in dismay. Her brother truly cared for this woman. A wave of guilt passed over her. Her price would devastate him. She watched Serena smile up at him, pure tenderness in her eyes, and the guilt melted into bitter envy. No one had ever looked at her that way…no man had ever said a soft word to her, touched her gently… No. Apollo would pay for his love. 31

Chapter Six
Apollo stood by the window, staring out at the warm, balmy evening. He sensed Serena’s approach and shifted when she slipped her hand into his. Turning to her, he pressed a soft kiss on her lips. Her eyes were aglow with happiness, and a deep contentment spread through his body. Of all the mortal women he had seduced, this one held him and wouldn’t let him go. He was drawn to her in ways he couldn’t explain, and the thought of leaving her caused him more pain than he had expected. “Come on, Apollo. Let’s go out.” She opened the glass door and nodded to him. He sighed to himself, his eyes on her as she walked out onto the deck. After selecting a bottle of wine from the rack near the door, he followed her. “Do you miss your home?” He looked up from uncorking the bottle. “Olympus? Not really.” He poured the wine into two crystal glasses. “Why do you ask?” She shrugged and turned around. “I just wondered. I don’t really know anything about it, except what I learned in books.” Apollo grinned. “Well, it’s grand and opulent, but the inhabitants aren’t exactly divine.” “No?” He chuckled. “Why do you think I leave so often? My sister alone is enough for a man to want to take a dive in the River Styx.” He took a sip of wine. “And we won’t even mention Juno.” Serena laughed, and he took her hand in his, bringing it to his lips. “No, I much prefer earth.” He winked at her. “And mortal females beat nymphs any day.” “So what is it like? Did you have a childhood? Minerva was fully grown when she sprang from Jupiter’s forehead, right?” “So many questions, siren.” He smiled. “A strange childhood, yes. My mother Leto was not with us long and Juno has always loathed us, because we are fruits of her 32

husband’s adultery. She and Father still bicker about nearly everything.” He shrugged. “No one pays them any mind.” Serena giggled and tugged at his hand, leading him down the steps into the cool grass. She turned from him to look up at the full moon. Apollo followed her gaze. The scene was truly breathtaking. Brilliant light spilled across the field, illuminating it until it shone almost bright as day. The stars sparkled in the dark velvet sky. A song poured from Serena’s lips. Apollo laughed in surprise as he heard the first notes of Dvorak’s “Song to the Moon.” I hope Diana is listening. As the goddess of the moon and the hunt, she must surely be touched by the innocent tribute. As the song continued, his cock grew harder and harder. Something about her voice…something about her music…drove him to the edge. Pressure built in his shaft until he could no longer stand. He sank to the ground, moaning deep in his throat. Why was this happening to him? Certainly, her stunning talent increased his ardor for her, but it affected him physically…every time she sang, his body hardened to the point of pain. By the time she finished, his mouth was dry and his breath labored. Reaching for her, he was grateful they had not bothered with clothes. He gazed at her nude body stretched in the grass; her smile was soft and intimate. Apollo could not resist. Her small breasts were soft in his grip; he cupped them gently, running his thumbs over her erect nipples. She sucked in a breath, her pale eyes widening with pleasure. His mouth lowered, and he flicked his tongue across the peak. The hot, wet sensation stole Serena’s breath. He caught her nipple between his teeth and tugged lightly, sending shocks of bliss surging through her. His large hands glided over her, heating her skin with every touch. When he drew back to stare at her body, she whimpered, missing his warmth against her. Apollo plucked a large grape from its vine and bit off the end. Reaching down, he pushed it between Serena’s throbbing nether lips. “Apollo! What in the world--” She gasped at the cool fullness. “It will be so much sweeter this way, siren.” He grinned up at her wickedly and lowered his head. Sliding his tongue into her beneath the grape, he squeezed the juice out and moved his lips up to suckle her hard, small bud. “Apollo!” “Mmmm.” 33

Her legs twined around his shoulders, and she clutched his hair in her fingers. Pushing the grape deeper with his tongue, he extracted more juice and sucked so fiercely, he drew a scream from her. Her legs tightened around him, and he pressed harder. She arched her hips in a smooth rhythm, feeling her release coming. Apollo left off tugging her nub and moved back to the grape. He slid his tongue deep inside her, and she was done for. She pulled at his hair as shudders of ecstasy ran through her body, a series of high-pitched screams sounding in the night. Apollo scooped out the grape and disentangled himself from her legs. “Oh, Apollo…” She gazed at him, stunned. He did not respond as he chewed and swallowed. He licked the mingled juices of her and the grape off his lips, a flicker of anguish crossing his face. Her eyes dropped to his shaft, which was still swollen and erect, and the obvious cause of his discomfort. She raised her eyes to him, again. “What can I do?” His whispered answer was so soft it was barely audible. “Sing.” She did. Serena sang Dalila’s seductive, passionate song, enticing Samson to sin. Apollo succumbed to it, before her eyes. Rolling over on his back, he took his cock in his hand and squeezed, grunting with every stroke. When she hit an especially resonant note, he groaned and arched his hips off the grass. Her voice rang, and his features twisted. He stroked harder, his breath quickening as he pumped himself to the rhythm of her song. In the moon’s radiance, she could make out the sheen of sweat on his skin…if he only knew what she was. He probably had no notion of why her voice tortured him so, why it made him weak with desire. His other hand clasped his shaft, and he gripped himself tightly. A ringing shout echoed through the field, and she couldn’t help noticing the perfect pitch. She smiled; the man was unsurpassed. Depleted, Apollo stared up her; her golden hair spilled around her, her skin tinged an ethereal white in the silver moonlight. Her rosebud mouth was swollen with passion. A jolt of pain made him gasp; he didn’t want to leave her. And it was more than her voice. Her innocent exploration, her instinctive trust in him…it touched his heart. His cock was satisfied for the moment, but his heart was not. He would return to Diana, soon, and fulfill her terms. He would never see Serena again, and some part of him cried out in protest. Though his life had been entwined with hers only a short time, somewhere

along the way, their vines had gotten irreversibly tangled. And to leave her meant to leave a piece of himself behind. *** One afternoon a few days later, Apollo entered his room to find Diana awaiting him. His stomach clenched; he knew why she was there. He sighed deeply; ever since the sunrise this morning, he had expected this. He’d not slept a wink last night, holding Serena close to him, memorizing her face, the feel of her skin, the scent of her body… “Diana, please…can we reach an agreement? I cannot leave—“ She shook her head. “Ten days, little brother. That was the bargain.” Her blue eyes sharpened. “Now I want my due.” “Which is?” She smiled bitterly. “Your beloved’s greatest asset.” Nausea rose in his throat; he had a sinking suspicion that she meant… “Her voice. I want it.” Diana’s tone brooked no argument. “But…” He sat on the edge of the bed, overcome with anguish. “You can’t do that, Diana. Why would you wish to--” “Because I want it. And I take what I want, Apollo. You know that.” He took a deep breath and raised his head to meet her gaze. “No. I won’t allow it, Diana. Take anything you wish, but you can’t have that.” “There is nothing else I want. I have come to my decision.” “Take my power.” Diana’s face paled with shock. She stepped back, as if she had suffered a physical blow. “You would sacrifice…how could you, Apollo?” “I love her. And if this is what it takes to keep her… Drain me, sister.” Her lips trembled, a vulnerable gesture he had never seen before. “You love her so much? You are willing… I should take it, Apollo. Simply because you were foolish enough to offer it.” “Then do so,” he urged. “Do so and leave me in peace with her.” Fury filled her gaze, and his body jolted, causing him to shout in pain. Footsteps sounded in the hallway, and Serena poked her head inside. “Apollo? Are you all right?”

Breathing heavily, he glanced at his sister before speaking. “She wanted your voice, Serena. I had no choice.” “What are you talking about? Who is she?” “Diana, the goddess of the moon.” Diana’s cobalt eyes narrowed. “As a virgin, you were under my protection, mortal. I gave him ten days with you, and in exchange, I asked for your voice.” Serena stared at Diana for a long moment. “You cannot have it.” Apollo interjected. “Serena, she is a goddess. She can take anyth--” “I’m a siren.” He raised a brow. “I beg your pardon?” “I’m a siren.” She took a deep breath. “My voice is in my blood. She cannot take it from me.” Serena’s pale blue eyes watched him intently. “Did you know she would do this, Apollo?” “No, no, of course not.” Did she believe he could be with her all this time, knowing what she would lose? He heard the desperation in his own voice. Diana glared at her. “A siren? Like the old myths?” Serena nodded. “I don’t possess the Dark Skill: I cannot seduce men on sight, but I can lure them with my song.” Apollo could not take his eyes from her. “And your charms are more powerful. One does not expect the smoldering temptress beneath the innocent façade.” Her face softened, and Diana’s lips tightened. “Then my only consolation is your godhood, Apollo. At least I have that much for releasing her to you.” Serena’s gaze flew to Diana. “What?” The other woman smiled. “He traded me his power to keep your voice. If we’d known what you were, it would never have been done.” Apollo watched Serena’s face pale. “You didn’t!” “I thought she would take your song…I could not allow that.” “But, Apollo--” “At least we will have a human lifetime together, now, Serena.” He swallowed the lump rising in his throat. “If you’ll spend yours with me.” Serena’s hand brushed his cheek; he felt it tremble against his skin. “Oh, please, spare me.” Diana rolled her eyes. “Lovers never fail to make me ill.” 36

“Then leave,” a new voice said. They spun around to find a very young, kind looking man standing in the doorway. “Life is bleak without love, Diana.” “Shut it, Cupid. I’m going.” Serena stared at the man. Cupid? As in the god, Cupid? Oh, why should I be surprised? Both Apollo and Diana showed up, so the rest of the pantheon’s more than welcome. Cupid glanced at Apollo. “Your godhood is restored. Since Diana could not take Serena’s voice, the trade is void.” Serena sighed in relief. “But that means I will outlive her, Cupid. I…” Apollo gazed down at her, his eyes unusually bright with a sheen of tears. “No, you won’t. She is half-siren, and immortality already runs through her veins. But to make certain…” He handed Serena a crystal goblet; it was filled with a liquid that looked exactly like Montefiori wine. She peered at it. “What is this?” Cupid chuckled. “The true nectar of the gods. Ambrosia.” Serena took a sip; it had nearly the same consistency as her wine, but a touch sweeter. “I don’t feel any different.” “No, but now you live for eternity.” Apollo gathered her in his arms. “With me.” He kissed her so tenderly that tears pricked her eyelids. Cupid smiled fondly. “And I just might have a solution for you, Serena. We know someone who is more than willing to care for this place.” Apollo sudden laugh startled her. “Of course, why didn’t I think of it?” He looked up at the ceiling. “Bacchus? You want the fields?” The merry god of wine appeared instantly. “May I?” Apollo glanced at Serena. “Can he have it?” “Can I keep the house? And you’ll cultivate the grapes?” Bacchus laughed, causing his plump belly to jiggle. “Of course, little siren. What will I do with a house? Let it be as you wish.”

“Just don’t turn all the wine to ambrosia, Bacchus. We don’t need a planet peopled with immortals,” Cupid warned. And then they vanished, leaving Serena and Apollo alone. He turned, a smile lighting his jade eyes. “Well, my lovely siren. Now what?” “Will you sing with me?” He lowered his mouth to hers. “Forever.”

About the Author
Born a hopeless dreamer, Lily Ashford always knew she would write romance, but she never imagined a foray into the darker waters of erotic fiction. That said, the water’s steamy and sensual, just as she likes it. Her stories are by turns funny, dramatic, and at times, otherworldly; but always, there is a deeply emotional relationship at the core.
