The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Chapter One Bryan closed his eyes, focusing on his playing. The notes he coaxed from the violin surrounded him, soothing him. The only time he could lose himself like this was when he played his instrument. Oblivious to the others in the room, the bow, guided by the expert manipulation of Bryan's hand, flew over the strings. The motion of his fingers over the strings was a sensual stroking, bringing the hauntingly beautiful melody to life. As the last note died off, the cheering from some of the students surprised Bryan. He'd forgotten they were there. When he opened his eyes, he saw the instructor nodding in approval at him. This audition had been set up by Bryan's guardian, Jaden St. Ives. It was damn near impossible to get Lazlo Alvante to agree to tutor a new student, but from Lazlo's smug expression, it appeared he would take Bryan on. The small, excitable man positively beamed at him. "Very well executed, Bryan. Your heart shows most plainly in your music." Lazlo approached him and heartily shook Bryan's hand. "I would be delighted to instruct you." "Thank you, Mr. Alvante." Bryan smiled, relaxing now that the interview was over. He'd been somewhat worried, but refused to allow the emotion to take over. "St. Ives told me you had promising skill, and he was correct in his assessment. However, remember that I will 10

require you to play until your fingers bleed. I'm not the easiest of task masters." "You know my guardian?" Bryan placed his violin and bow in his case, then shut it. "I've had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, and I heard him play once. You've a long way to go before you are equal to his skill, but with the proper dedication, you might match him someday." For a brief moment Bryan envied his new instructor. The man had met Bryan's guardian, something Bryan hadn't had the privilege of doing. There were a million questions Bryan wanted to ask Lazlo, but he swallowed them. Very few people realized that Bryan had never seen Jaden St. Ives, and he preferred to keep up the illusion that he knew his guardian. "I only have four students currently, five now with you. I expect you to be on time for every session I schedule with you. Short of your own death, there will be no acceptable excuse for you to miss a class." Walking back to his desk, Lazlo opened his calendar. "I will see you every Thursday at four PM sharp, Bryan. And advance warning: if you miss more than two classes, you will be dropped." "I understand, Mr. Alvante, and I'm grateful you're willing to tutor me." **** After carefully setting down the hand-written sheets of music, Bryan opened and read the note accompanying the birthday present from his guardian. The letter explained the 11

composition had been a personal gift from Tchaikovsky to an old friend and was a relatively unknown piece of work. From the details his guardian included, Bryan had the odd impression his guardian had written from personal experience. Then again, each time his guardian sent him a gift, he'd also given a detailed history of the present as well. This one was so intimately detailed that Bryan wondered if Tchaikovsky's old friend had been his guardian. It wasn't the first time in his life Bryan had had a similar feeling. He couldn't explain any part of what he felt. His guardian had been a mysterious and unknown figure in his life since Bryan was two years old. "For never having met you, your guardian knows what you like." Kennedy, his roommate, looked over the music as he ate a slice of the cake that came with Bryan's present. "Umm, Bavarian cream. You've got to try a piece, Musical Genius." "I will in a minute." Reverently, he touched the sheets as he studied the notes. It was a very complex piece. He had no doubt he could master it, but it'd take some time. "MG, snap out of it. Get over here and eat some cake." Kennedy cut him a piece, then thrust the plate in Bryan's face. "All right, all right." Laughing, Bryan took the plate and grabbed one of the forks from the table. "So when do we meet this mysterious guardian of yours anyway? I'd think he'd want to see where his money is going." Bryan made a face. "I'm not sure if I'll ever meet him. I haven't tried since last spring right before I graduated. The 12

guards at the gate keep telling me he isn't seeing anybody every time I try." "Don't tell me you've given up? There's a mystery to solve here." With a fake maniacal laugh, Kennedy waved his fork at Bryan. "No, I haven't given up. I'll meet him one way or another." "You never know. He might have a very good reason for not letting you see him. Maybe he's hideously deformed. Or a serial killer. Or..." Before Kennedy's imagination could come up with anything more, Bryan put up his hand. "Or maybe you're crazy." "Well, you have to admit it's really weird that you've never met your guardian, yet he pays for everything." Bryan just shrugged. He really didn't want to get into the oddity of his own situation. The two of them had known each other since middle school, and Kennedy pretty much knew everything about Bryan except for the odd dreams and feelings Bryan had because of his guardian, something he'd never spoken about to a living soul. "At least you got in with Lazlo. That's a great step to your dream of getting into the Universal Symphony." Kennedy finished off his piece of cake then tossed the paper plate into the trash. "I'm off. Sure you don't want to come with?" "Nah, you go ahead. I don't feel like going out." "You're gonna miss a great party." Grabbing his jacket, Kennedy put it on, then paused at the door with his hand on the knob. As one of the campus jocks, Kenny made a regular habit of attending every party he could during the off season. "You double sure?" 13
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
"I'm positive." Bryan's thoughts were too focused on his guardian, and the loud distraction of a party would bother the hell out of him. "Your loss, bud. I'll have a beer for ya." Bryan sat down on the bed, relieved when Kennedy shut the door. Lying on his bed, he folded his arms behind his head. As much as he liked the gift, he couldn't help feeling a bit of disappointment. He'd hoped Jaden would finally come to see him, but here it was his nineteenth birthday, and his guardian remained no more than a mysterious figure in the background of his life. Bryan had held to two major dreams in his life; meeting his guardian and becoming a member of the Universal Symphony. Staring up at the ceiling, he tried to count the small holes for distraction. Not that it helped any. Once his thoughts fixated on Jaden, his mind wouldn't let go. Bryan had spent many hours weaving daydreams around Jaden. In his dreams, he'd hear the man's voice, feel his kiss. His guardian featured far too prominently in Bryan's dreams. Sometimes in the dead of night, he swore Jaden was there with him. With a certainty that allowed for no argument, Bryan knew he was being watched. Just as he fell asleep, a fleeting touch of a hand to his face or shoulder would disturb him, and he believed without a doubt it was Jaden. Oddly, he never believed himself crazy, but he knew if he admitted it to others, they would probably think he was. Which was why he'd never told anyone. Bryan couldn't even explain to himself how he just knew it was Jaden. He could remember dreams where he listened to his guardian long into 14

the night. He never recalled the exact words the next day, but he'd known that he dreamed of Jaden. Bryan realized he'd fallen in love with his guardian. Again, not something he could explain how or why, but he knew it. When he'd finally understood his own feelings, he simply accepted them. He still dated other people, but mostly only to have fun, and everybody in his group of friends knew not to expect anything serious from him. Just having his thoughts focused on his guardian was enough to make Bryan hard beneath his pants. His hand drifted over his bare chest as he lost himself in his own daydream. It wasn't his hand exploring the smooth lines of skin, it was Jaden's. A breath parted Bryan's lips, and he dreamed of the hungry devouring of his mouth under the bruising pressure of Jaden's. Slipping his hand under the waistband of his pants, he stroked over his aching cock. The tip of his thumb applied an exquisite pressure just under the head, making him groan softly. As he spread his legs, the motion of his hand quickened. In his mind, Jaden's cock filled his ass, taking pleasure from him. "Please. Oh God, please." His mind and voice pleaded to his invisible lover to be taken over the edge. So rapt in his fantasy, Bryan could see the dark form hovering over him in his mind's eye. It wasn't his hand on his cock, it was Jaden's, drawing him deeper and deeper into a need that threatened to consume him.

Suddenly, Bryan felt a familiar presence drench over him. He knew, just knew it was St. Ives. He came, body shaking hard as he helplessly cried out his guardian's name. For a single second, Bryan felt the perfect world where he gave everything of himself to Jaden. A sob rose in his throat and he curled to his side, trying to mentally wrap the feel of his guardian around himself. Bryan so desperately needed him, the sense of it both a pleasure and a pain to him. A quiet, soothing flow gradually filled him, and he relaxed with it. It seemed as if his guardian knew and had answered him. The strong sense enveloped Bryan, keeping him at peace and gently lulling him to sleep. Before he completely tumbled into the blackness, Bryan could have sworn there was movement on the bed beside him. A gentle touch brushed over the side of his face, and Bryan tried to open his eyes but couldn't. A voice reached for him through the darkness. Sleep now, I'm with you. Completely trusting the soft words in his mind, Bryan drifted within the waves of warmth before he fell deeply asleep. **** "Hey, lazy ass. It's time for breakfast." Bryan opened one eye and peered blurrily at his friend who tried to shake him awake. "I'm up. I'm up." "You wanted me to get you up before I left. You better fucking hurry 'cuz I'm leaving." Kennedy lightly hit the top of Bryan's head before he grabbed his books and headed out the door. 16
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Why in the hell had he wanted to get up early? Kennedy had classes today, he didn't. Just as Bryan burrowed back under the covers, he remembered. Pushing off the covers, he got out of bed and made his way to the bathroom. Kennedy had left his damp towels lying on the floor. His dirty clothes were next to them, and there were blobs of toothpaste and shaving cream left behind on the sink. His roommate was hideously messy, and Bryan had learned to outwait him. He no longer cleaned up behind Kennedy. Sooner or later, Kennedy would clean up after himself, depending on how long it took him to get disgusted with his own filth. The last time Bryan had finally made arrangements with one of their friends down the hall to use their bathroom for showers. It wasn't until Kennedy decided the bathroom had gotten too dirty for him to use that everything got cleaned. At the time, Bryan had absolutely refused to lift a finger and do Kennedy's job. This weekend was Kennedy's turn to clean the rooms. Bryan prepared for a repeat of what happened last time. Stepping into the tub, Bryan relaxed under the hot water, making a mental note to talk to Barry about using his shower again if things got out of hand. Kenny occasionally tended to skate through life on his looks alone. He had good reason with his all American blond curls and blue eyes, plus being built like a Mack truck. He loved his best friend to death, but Bryan wouldn't let him get away with flashing his pearly whites to get out of trouble, living with the guy was occasionally a trial. He picked up the soap and began rubbing it over his body. After pouring some shampoo into his hand, 17

he scrubbed his head with his fingers, then closed his eyes and rinsed off. He fumbled for his towel on the rack and found it. Wiping his face, he stepped out of the shower, then dried off. Today he would do some surveillance on his guardian's home. He'd thought about the idea for a long time. If he could sneak into Jaden's house, he would finally be able to meet his guardian. Bryan refused to be deterred. Once he dressed, Bryan opened the front door and went out into the hall. Pretty much everybody was either in class or out for the day, so the hallways were quiet. He ran down the two flights of stairs then headed outside to his car in the parking lot. Since he needed breakfast, he went to the drive-thru of McDonald's first and got a Sausage McMuffin meal, one of his favorites. He flipped on the radio, then started eating as he drove to one of the grocery stores right outside town. After a quick jaunt through the store, grabbing a few things to eat, ice, and more soda, Bryan returned to the car. He opened the cooler between the front seats, putting in the cans and filled it with the bag of ice. Before he closed the lid, he put the package of lunchmeat on top. He did plan on being gone most of the day, and everything he brought would have to tide him over. Restarting the car, he drove out of the parking lot and in the direction of Jaden's home. Bryan had driven by it several times, ever since he'd learned to drive. He'd even stopped at the gate and asked to see Jaden, but every damn time he'd been refused. This was the first time he'd returned after the last refusal. His 18

guardian's home was nestled among other large estates, some of them were fenced, some weren't, but Jaden's was. Which made Bryan's task just a bit harder. He felt up to the challenge. Come hell or high water, he would get in to see Jaden. Bryan parked his car at the curb and shut it off. Drinking the last bit of Coke, he settled in for a long wait. Right before two, he saw someone walking toward the guard shack at the gate. Since she came from the direction of the house, Bryan had a feeling the guards were live-in, and not hired from a company. He made himself a ham sandwich while he watched. Soon it became obvious that his guardian received little company. No cars had approached the gate at all. The only people Bryan saw were some gardeners tending to the grounds and an occasional guard walking the outer perimeter around the house. Glancing at his watch, he began timing them. Once in a while, Bryan stared up at the house, wondering where his guardian was. Every window, except for the downstairs ones, still had drawn curtains. The three-story wooden structure was reminiscent of the Tudor style, and it was enormous. There were two wings that branched off the main house. Was Jaden awake or asleep? What was he doing now? Bryan knew Jaden was extremely well off. The look of the house and the exorbitant gifts he gave Bryan revealed that. But what did the man do? At first Bryan had thought he was some kind of business tycoon, but his name was never mentioned in the business section of any paper Bryan had 19

ever read. The same questions had plagued Bryan for a long time, and he wanted to find out the answers. His own intuition filled in some of the blanks surrounding his guardian. While most might scoff at him for it, Bryan knew some things with a certainty that couldn't be shaken. He'd felt hints of Jaden's gentle nature in the dreams of his guardian speaking to him. No matter how he had to do it, Bryan would get into that house, and he would see Jaden. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter Two Bryan had been watching his guardian's house for over a week. Pure determination to meet the damn man played a large part in his perseverance. He'd found a small gap in the outside fence during earlier explorations. He'd also figured out when the guards made their rounds and when they changed shifts. All of the skulking around had cost him a few nights of sleep, but it didn't matter to him. Glancing at his watch, he still had a few minutes to go before the ten PM shift took over. After another look at his watch, Bryan got out of the car. He knew the shifts were changing, and he only had about ten minutes before the new shift started their rounds. Hurriedly crossing the street, he stopped in front of the metal fence. There was an opening at the bottom of the fence and just enough of a depression in the ground to let him through. Thankfully, he was fairly skinny. Wiggling beneath the fence, the metal caught at his clothes, and he had to free himself a few times. In less than a minute, he stood on the other side. Careful to steer clear of the front part of the house, Bryan hotfooted through the trees and came out at the back of the house. The huge mansion dominated the grounds. Its dark façade looked even more mysterious at night. Several lights were on and visible through windows. From a balcony window on the third floor, the soft strains of a violin drifted down through the otherwise quiet night. 21
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Crouching near one of the trees, Bryan waited silently, listening to the music. He knew it had to be his guardian. Looking up at the window, he nearly missed the car pulling around into the back. Like clockwork, one of the servants got out of his car and headed into the house. He paused to unlock the door, then went inside. Bryan stood and ran across the lawn, just catching the door before it shut. He held onto it, keeping it from closing completely, and waited. Staring at his watch, he waited a minute before he said a silent prayer and opened the door. Fate was with him—there was nobody in the hallway. At this late hour, there should be very few in the kitchen yet he could hear movement and the sound of laughter as the servants cleaned. Bryan had no choice but to walk past the open kitchen door. As he moved toward it, another fervent prayer made its way to the heavens. Pulling in a deep breath, he tried to calm his pounding heart. Instead of darting across the doorway, he walked as casually as he could, hoping he didn't draw attention from any of the servants. When no sound of alarm followed him, Bryan relaxed slightly and continued to the other end of the hall. The indescribably beautiful melody drew him in some strange way. Following the sound of the music, Bryan took a small set of stairs to the left instead of continuing to the main part of the house. He crept up the stairs, listening intently to the music. On the third floor, he headed down another corridor before he found what he was looking for. A door stood partially open, and Bryan knew his guardian was on the other side. He'd 22

never met the man, didn't know what to expect, but he relied heavily on his gut feeling in believing the music had called to him. Pushing the door open a bit more, Bryan peered into the room. A man stood with his back to the door. Violin resting beneath his chin, he played on, the music lilting and soft, flowing around the room. His blond hair extended a little past his shoulders and tapered toward the middle. He was dressed in dark gray, from his silk shirt to his pants. His feet were bare, looking pale against the dark wood of the glossy floor. Staring at the man in amazement, Bryan couldn't believe his eyes. He had expected his guardian to be older. The man he saw wasn't more than in his late twenties. This couldn't be his guardian, yet he played like an angel. When the song changed, Bryan recognized the music, and it entranced him. It was a Tchaikovsky piece, the same one his guardian had sent him for his birthday. Did he dare actually go into the room? When Bryan heard a small sound off to his left, he quickly decided to slip into the room. "Close the door." The man's voice was rich and deep, and it seemed to blend perfectly with the exquisite tones he coaxed out of the Stradivarius beneath his chin. Already ungodly nervous, the words startled Bryan, but he quietly shut the door behind him. Standing uncertainly, he hovered near it. Not daring to say anything, Bryan listened to his guardian play as the music wove its own spell around him. The man didn't speak for several more minutes; he just kept playing. When he finished the piece, he lowered the 23

violin and sighed. "I wondered how long it would take you to come find me." With the acknowledgment, a glow of satisfaction warmed through Bryan. He had been right to think his guardian had been waiting for him. "They wouldn't let me in at the gate, and you never answered my requests to come visit you." "I rarely venture from my home." He set the violin down in its velvet-lined case as carefully as one might place a sleeping baby in its crib. "I am impressed that you made it through the security. Welcome, Bryan, to my home." "I've been watching the grounds for over a week," Bryan stated. For the first time he moved, stepping closer to Jaden. There was an otherworldly elegance to the trim, muscular figure clad in gray silk. When Bryan stepped around to the front of Jaden, he got his first good look at the man's face. His guardian's features had a classically artistic look that would have sent several of Bryan's female friends, and a large number of his male friends, into serious fits of lust. "Ah, that explains things." An eyebrow rose and Jaden smiled. "Well, you are here now. I imagine I am not quite what you had expected." Staring into the pale gray eyes, Bryan felt slightly disconcerted. "No..." When he heard the faintly higher pitch of his own voice, Bryan winced slightly. He swallowed, trying to quell the nervousness before he tried again. "No, you're not. I was afraid you might throw me out once I got in here." The smile grew and Jaden shook his head slowly. "No. I would never throw you out, especially since you've taken a great risk and effort to come to me. Have you eaten?" 24
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Something wasn't quite right about his guardian's eyes, but Bryan wasn't sure exactly what it was. "I haven't eaten since this morning. I've been nervous about meeting you. Or getting caught by the guards." "Then I will feed you and we can talk." Jaden reached down beside him and slipped his hand through a loop at the top end of a cane. "I have a well-stocked kitchen and a full staff. Anything you could want." When he saw the cane, Bryan blurted out, "You're blind." A second later, he wanted to slap himself for making such an idiotic pronouncement. Quickly, he apologized before Jaden could say anything. "I'm sorry, I didn't know." Jaden laughed, the sound as rich as his music. "Yes, I am. And please, don't apologize." His guardian's reaction reassured Bryan he hadn't offended him, and he relaxed a bit. "There's a lot I didn't expect about you. I thought you would be older, and definitely not as good looking as you are." When he realized what he said, Bryan winced again. Jaden stopped and turned his head toward Bryan. Despite the sightless gaze, he seemed to know exactly where Bryan was. "I would share the sentiment, but ... well, most are unnerved at best by my form of 'looking.'" Stilling near Jaden, Bryan asked, "You use your hands, right? That's okay. You can look if you want." "Thank you." He slipped his hand out of the loop and set his cane to the side. Then he moved closer to Bryan—so close that they nearly touched—and raised his hands to cup Bryan's face. Long fingers, slightly calloused from playing the violin, 25
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
stroked over Bryan's jaw, his temples, and his cheeks. "So young, but so strong. Handsome." Bryan could feel the heat staining his cheeks at his guardian's compliments. He remained still and tried not to shiver. A slight tingling traced over his lips, making him swallow quickly. Too many wayward thoughts encroached on Bryan's mind. If he opened his mouth, he would stutter, he just knew he would. Leaning close, Jaden pressed a soft kiss to Bryan's forehead before stepping back. "Thank you," he said, slipping his hand through the cane's loop once more. "You are a very attractive young man, Bryan." With his guardian's face so close to his own, those thoughts spiraled completely out of control. Bryan had to bite sharply at his lip to stop the sound trying to escape as Jaden pulled away from him. When he could safely speak, he mumbled, "thanks." Relieved his guardian couldn't see him, Bryan followed behind him, trying his damnedest to keep his eyes off the guy's ass. "I'm glad you're not bothered that I snuck in here to see you." "Not bothered at all." The cane traced the floor in front of him, though he seemed to know the way well enough to avoid hitting anything. "What would you like to eat?" He stopped in front of a door and opened it, stepping to the side for Bryan to enter. Slipping past Jaden, Bryan did an excellent job of keeping his eyes off his guardian. "I guess whatever everybody else 26
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
had for dinner. Or maybe a sandwich. Peanut butter and jelly is fine." When Bryan entered the room and looked around, his eyes widened in awe. The entire room was larger than the floor of his dormitory. Against one wall was an impossibly large poster bed carved of dark wood. It sat on a stone pedestal, and the velvet draperies around it hung from a golden medallion on the ceiling. Every where Bryan looked, he recognized antiques from the crystal chandelier above a group of cream and dark wood chairs and table to the painted wood paneling of the walls. "Oh my God, where did you get all this stuff?" Jaden closed the door and walked over to the bed. Sitting on one side of it, he moved his hand over the bedside table until his fingers touched the small intercom box. He pressed the button and said, "Earl, bring my guest Martha's signature dish." Without waiting for an answer, he released the button and set the cane down. As he stretched out on his back, he rested his head on his hands. "I've traveled a good bit. Most of the objects in this room are French antiques. It might seem conceited, but I enjoy surrounding myself in luxury. Without sight, my sense of touch is greatly heightened. The richest textures are like heaven to me." The room paled in comparison to seeing his guardian stretched out on the bed. What he wouldn't give to— Abruptly, Bryan broke off the direction of his own thoughts as he shifted from foot to foot. "Can't blame you." 27
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Again, his voice came out slightly high-pitched over the first word, and he swallowed. Looking anywhere but the bed, he went to one of the tables. An emerald enameled egg, decorated with gold designs lay open on the table. Inside was an intricately made golden miniature ship. Not daring to touch it, Bryan leaned over to get a better look. "You have a Faberge egg?" "Six," Jaden said. "There are four more in the curio by the bathroom door, and one over here in the shadowbox by the bed." Bryan couldn't resist the chance to see them so he straightened and walked to the curio cabinet first. Knowing the Russian eggs were astronomically expensive, he simply studied them for a moment before he headed over near the bed to view the last one. "I've only seen pictures. Definitely doesn't do the pieces justice." Bryan did his best to try to ignore the urge to gaze at his guardian. He fought a losing battle at best. Jaden hummed his agreement. "No, they most certainly do not. There are many works of art here. Look all you like. No one will do or say anything to make you feel uncomfortable." Hovering near the side of the bed, Bryan looked down at Jaden. He barely dared to breathe as his gaze roamed slowly over the reclining form. The gray silk material clung to Jaden's form, defining the contours beneath. When a knock sounded at the door, Bryan jumped like he'd been caught doing something he shouldn't. Chapter Three A second later, the door opened and a servant brought in a covered silver tray. Without a word, he set it on the small table near the bed before he quietly withdrew from the room. Since the closest chair was on the other side of the room, Bryan wasn't sure if he should pick up the tray and move it or if he should just sit on the bed. With a shrug, he sat gingerly on the edge of the bed and lifted the lid on the tray. "Martha is an excellent cook." Jaden dipped a finger into the small bowl of ranch sauce. Then he closed his eyes as he sucked the white cream from the tip of his finger. "Excellent." Bryan could feel Jaden's body leaning against his back side. Looking quickly at him, Bryan was completely fascinated by the sight of the finger in his guardian's mouth. He could feel a whimper rising in his throat as he struggled to keep it silent. "Yeah." The one word came out slightly strangled, and Bryan cleared his throat. Hastily, he looked back at the tray. He hadn't expected such an elaborate roast beef sandwich. A bowl of dipping juice was next to the ranch sauce, and a small array of raw vegetables made a colorful display. Applying himself to eating, he picked up the sandwich and dipped it in the juice before taking a bite. With the first taste, he couldn't help an appreciative sound slipping free. Sitting up behind him, Jaden began massaging Bryan's shoulders gently. "Don't feel like you have to be quiet or 29
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
proper around me," Jaden whispered near Bryan's right ear. "No need for formality around me. Just be yourself." What Bryan wanted to do was lean back into that touch and just let go. Somehow he doubted if his guardian would appreciate the idea. Closing his eyes, he focused on the kneading touch. As he ate, his head tipped just the tiniest bit toward Jaden. "I am being myself. I've already put my foot in my mouth a couple of times." Jaden laughed softly and brushed Bryan's hair from his neck. "I've waited for you," he murmured. Bryan shivered with the touch of Jaden's hand, unable to stop the reactive response. "Waited for me?" He turned his head to look at his guardian and saw the man's face far too close to his own. Bryan's tongue darted out, licking at his suddenly dry lips. Staring into Jaden's eyes, it was odd to realize his guardian couldn't see him, but it really didn't matter. The tightening of his body already told Bryan he only wanted to be closer to Jaden. "Waited for you." Jaden reached up and cupped Bryan's jaw, turning his head gently. "Wanted you," he whispered, breath hot across Bryan's lips. "Oh, God." It was all Bryan could say before he leaned in to close the small distance between their lips. He wanted to taste so badly; he didn't even stop to think about his own actions. Something seemed to pass between them as Bryan's lips parted, and his tongue sought more intimate knowledge of the man who had intrigued him for far too long. Fingers combing through Bryan's hair, Jaden opened to him, tongue pushing into Bryan's mouth, tasting and 30

touching. A soft sound filled the kiss, something between a hum and a moan. There was nothing hurried about either of their actions. The slow stroking of their tongues joined together in an erotic rhythm of exploration, each seeking to learn the other. Bryan's hand slid upward to cup Jaden's face, simply wanting to touch him. Jaden ended the kiss slowly and rested his forehead against Bryan's, eyes closed. "Ever since you turned eighteen, I've wanted this. I was so afraid you wouldn't feel the same." Not understanding, Bryan stared at him for a long moment. As he tried to take in the meaning of Jaden's words, Bryan came up with a blank. "You've never met me. Why would you want me?" Jaden smiled and moved the silver tray from the bed to the chair beside the table. Then he laid back and pulled Bryan down with him. "Because you are you." He didn't give Bryan a chance to say anything; he just drew him into another kiss. Any attempt on his part at logical thought scattered as Jaden tugged him downward. He went willingly, stretching out, his body half covering Jaden's as he returned the kiss. Not at all shy now, the soft trail of his fingers glided over the front of his guardian's shirt as they enjoyed one another in their kiss. Humming softly, Jaden stretched beneath the touch, his own hands caressing Bryan's spine. Jaden spread his legs, letting Bryan's right knee settle between his thighs as he licked at Bryan's lips. 31

The vibration went straight through Bryan and drew a soft noise from him as he came up for air. Unable to even stop himself, his body nudged in closer to Jaden's, shifting his knee slightly higher and in against Jaden. Lifting his head, he looked down at his guardian. "I've never seen anyone like you, Jaden. I've wanted to know you for so long." Jaden pushed his thigh against Bryan just as he rocked against Bryan's knee. He groaned softly, fingers curling to Bryan's shirt. "I've very much wanted you in my life, Bryan." Bryan could barely believe the words or his own need to hear them. It shot through him in a jolt of realization. Staring down at Jaden, he studied his guardian's expression. The truth of the words reflected back to him, and he lifted his hand, gently smoothing over the dark blond hair. Lowering his head, the touch of Bryan's lips brushed Jaden's as his body pressed against the friction of his guardian's thigh. Jaden pulled Bryan's tongue into his mouth, sucking gently. Helpless to the growing feeling between them, the edge of Bryan's teeth scraped gently over Jaden's tongue with each motion. Jaden brought out a sharp surge of arousal that Bryan had no hope of controlling. Keeping Jaden pinned against his knee, Bryan's hand moved to his hip, kneading against the silken material. "Bryan..." Hearing his name, his hand ran underneath Jaden's pants, wrapping his fingers around the hard, thick length. As he shimmied down, his other hand tugged at the material, drawing it down before his mouth enveloped Jaden's cock. He 32

very badly wanted this taste of the man he'd come to love before he'd even met him. "Bryan!" Jaden's hands flew to Bryan's head and his hips jerked upward, driving his cock into Bryan's mouth. Shaking, Jaden rocked and pushed, fucking Bryan's mouth with quickening strokes. The rapid glide of Bryan's mouth, teeth, and tongue circled Jaden as he relaxed his throat, taking him in. The play of his hand ran over the top of Jaden's thigh before gently cupping his balls. A firm press of his thumb repeatedly rubbed at the sensitive skin just beneath them, urging Jaden to come for him. Groaning, Jaden's hips rose, burying his cock deep inside Bryan's throat. His thighs trembled and parted further, and then he gasped, shaking uncontrollably as he filled Bryan's mouth with his come. "Love, Bryan, oh God..." Feeling the shaking of Jaden's body, he drank his release as it spurted down his throat. When Jaden began to relax, he gently cleaned him then pressed a soft kiss to the tip of his cock before he raised his head to look up at him. "You know, don't you?" Shifting back to his prior position, Bryan rested his forehead against Jaden's shoulders, closing his eyes. "I do." Jaden lifted Bryan's head and kissed him softly. "I think I've always loved you. Is that why you wouldn't let me come see you?" "I didn't want you here until you'd had some kind of life out there. But there is more to it, more that you need to know, Bryan." 33
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Bryan had always believed Jaden would love him. It couldn't be any other way with how he felt about his guardian. As he gently touched his face, Bryan whispered, "I just needed to know that you loved me. That I wasn't wrong." "I do love you, more than you realize." Jaden took Bryan's hand and brought it to his lips. "I've waited for ages, following you through dreams." He kissed Bryan's hand, lips moving slowly over his wrist. "Trying desperately to sate a hunger that only you could fill." Confused, Bryan couldn't even begin to comprehend most of what Jaden said, but all he needed to know was that Jaden loved him. It relaxed something deep inside him. "You can have everything you need from me, Jaden. Just let me stay with you and don't send me away." "I could never send you away. I need you too much." Jaden blew gently across Bryan's wrist before biting, fangs sinking into the supple flesh. His thoughts surrounded Bryan's mind, hazing the bite and making it seem nothing more than a lingering kiss. Lifting his free hand, he gently caressed the side of Jaden's face. He'd needed the reassurance and was grateful Jaden gave it to him. "Thank you, Jaden." Jaden moaned softly. He'd waited so long for this, so long to feel this connection. He'd followed Bryan's soul for ages, and with the taste of his blood Jaden knew he'd come home. Hunger sated, he licked the wounds, then drew back his head. "There are so many questions I have, but somehow it doesn't seem important to have the answers anymore." His 34

eyes traveled over Jaden's face, memorizing its detail. "You've always given me things and been a part of my life." "We have time." Jaden unerringly touched Bryan's cheek, his fingers slipping through the curls of Bryan's hair. Managing to still his wayward thoughts, he cleared his mind to focus on talking with Jaden. "You're not as old as I thought you would be, Jaden. Sometimes when I've read the notes you sent with my gifts, they made me wonder. It sounded like you were talking about things in the past like you'd been there." For the briefest moment Jaden's fingers hesitated in their movement, but he gathered his senses quickly enough. He opened his mouth, but the words refused to come out. He honestly had no idea how to explain anything. "I read quite a bit," he finally said. "That's really lame, Jaden. If you're not ready to tell me everything, it's okay. I told you all I really needed to know is that you love me." "Okay, even I'll admit that's pretty lame." He brushed his fingers across Bryan's lips. "I do love you, Bryan. Very, very much. There are just some things that..." He trailed off with a sigh. "Would it help for me to tell you that no matter what you say, I'll still love you? I've loved you ever since I can remember, though I can't really explain that either. Except to just say it." Bryan reached for Jaden's hand and tilted his face to rub his cheek against the palm. When he turned his head, the press of Bryan's lips silenced whatever Jaden might have said. Bryan had told him the truth, he really didn't care what 35

secrets his guardian held to himself. All that mattered was he'd finally been allowed to be where he belonged. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter Four When Bryan woke, he noticed he wasn't in his guardian's room. Jaden or a servant must have carried him to another room some time during the night. A feeling of disappointment nagged at him but then faded as he basked in the knowledge that he was with Jaden now. Everything he'd believed about his guardian had been real. Stretching beneath the covers, Bryan lazily smiled to himself. When the door opened, he looked eagerly over, hoping Jaden would be there. Instead a servant bowed respectfully to him before he approached the bed with a silver tray. "Your breakfast, Master Bryan." After he gathered the sheet around him, Bryan scooted to the edge of a bed as the tray was set on a small folding table then placed in front of him. The man lifted the lid then turned to leave. Bryan quickly looked up and said, "Please, don't leave yet." "Do you need something else, Master Bryan?" Eyeing the wide selection of fruit, eggs, ham, bacon, and toast, Bryan shook his head slightly. "No, I just wanted to know your name." "I am Earl, guardian of Master Jaden's home." Even though he was bald and aged, Earl was the perfect image of a long time family servant. "Is Jaden around?" 37

"He's at rest, but he'll join you later this evening. When you are done, just ring the bell, and someone will take away the dishes. If that is all, Master Bryan, I will return downstairs." "Thank you, Earl." Having a conversation with the man seemed to be a trial, and Bryan gave up on the idea. As he left, Bryan started in on his breakfast. He never had this much food in the morning, but he was starving. He demolished the eggs and several pieces of sausage and bacon. Pouring tea into his cup, he added a little sugar then picked at the fruit. Everything on the tray was a favorite of his: strawberries, cubes of watermelon, grapes, and orange slices. He wasn't quite sure how his guardian knew what he liked. Obviously he had told his servants, and they'd fixed what Bryan would want. When he finished, he decided to get dressed and take the tray downstairs himself. Going into the bathroom, Bryan quickly washed up then returned to the bedroom to find his clothes. He didn't see his jeans and shirt so he checked the tall wardrobe against one wall. The sight of his clothing neatly hanging on hangers shocked the hell out of him. Jaden must have sent one of the servants to get Bryan's clothes from his dorm room. That would have freaked poor Kennedy. He thought he'd better make a quick trip back home and let his best friend know what was going on. He pulled one of the shirts and a pair of jeans from their hangers, then got dressed. After putting on his shoes, he picked up the tray. Bryan remembered his way around fairly 38

well from the night before. At least he knew where the kitchen was. An eerie silence covered the house. Bryan thought it was odd, but then maybe his guardian preferred the quiet. Still a radio or even the sound of a TV would have been nice. As he passed an open doorway, he saw two servants inside, cleaning the room. Neither of them made much noise, either. Okay, there would be a few things Bryan needed to discuss with his guardian. Among them would be having his computer and TV brought here, and what would be the chances of getting cable. "Do you think the young man knows the truth about the Master?" The voice came from the kitchen, and it sounded like an elderly female. When Bryan paused, he heard Earl answer her. "That's not for us to speculate, Martha." The words gave Bryan food for thought. Whatever his guardian's secrets were, it appeared the servants knew them. Though Jaden was blind, the complete isolation he kept himself in confused Bryan. While he knew he could probably pry it out of the servants, Bryan wouldn't do that. The only thing that really mattered to him was his guardian's emotions, the rest Jaden would tell him in time. "I haven't seen the master smile so much for a very long time," Martha continued, accompanied by the sounds of rattling pots and pans. "Perhaps this young man will be good for him." Before any more could be said, Bryan began whistling to give himself away as he walked further down the hall and into 39

the kitchen. "I thought I'd bring this down to spare you some trouble." Bryan set the tray down on a nearby counter, smiling at both of them. "That was a great breakfast. Thank you very much." "You're very kind, Master Bryan." Earl slid from his chair and stood stiffly at attention. A tall, robust woman curtseyed to Bryan, introducing herself. "Master Bryan, I'm Martha, the cook." The smile on her lips showed genuine pleasure at meeting him, and Bryan smiled easily back at her. "Hello, Martha. Is it all right if I look around the house?" "Certainly, you may, Master Bryan. Lunch will ready around noon, and dinner is five o'clock." "Thanks." Bryan wasn't fully comfortable with all the formality. After leaving the kitchen, he wandered through the house, exploring every nook and cranny. A few doors were locked but most weren't. Every room he saw was filled with antiques of different time periods. The place was like a museum. The only things modern about it were the electrical lights and the kitchen. His guardian's office had a phone and computer, and Bryan prayed he wasn't on dial-up. He hated dial-up. He'd seen several servants cleaning the rooms. Some were friendly, but overall they worked as quietly as possible. It felt a bit unnerving to Bryan since he was used to the boisterous noise of a dormitory. As he headed outside, Bryan wondered if Jaden would mind his friends visiting. He would have to ask him when he saw him later. 40

The front gate was closed, and Bryan had to wait for the guard to open it. A soft whirr of sound accompanied the opening of the gate. Bryan stood beside the guard as he waited. "I'll probably be back in a few hours." "Where's your car, sir?" "I parked on Peking Street." Bryan answered him with a sheepish grin. The guard cracked a smile. "When you return you can drive up to the gate." **** In the end, it took Bryan three hours to get his car loaded and escape Kennedy's curiosity. He also had to attend Lazlo Alvante's class. His tutor had been extremely demanding in preparing Bryan for an upcoming recital. When he got back to his guardian's house, two of the servants carried all of his stuff to his room. After Bryan got everything situated and set up, he undressed. Digging for a pair of sweatpants, he slipped them on, then opened his violin case. The door between his and Jaden's room was still closed, and he'd already discovered it was locked as well. He let his thoughts dwell on his guardian, and an image of Jaden lying on him played in his mind. He'd tried not to think too much of the night before but didn't have much luck. Because Lazlo demanded he practice at least two hours a night, Bryan began to play the music Jaden had given him for his birthday. He desperately wanted to master the piece. Thus far, he had difficulty with the pacing of the notes. Heedless of the passing time, Bryan played, then stopped when he 41

messed up a note. Careful to keep his frustration at bay, he patiently restarted the piece each time. When his thoughts began to completely sidetrack to Jaden, Bryan replaced the violin in the case then stretched out on the bed. They'd talked into the early morning hours until Bryan could no longer stay awake. He'd fallen asleep in Jaden's arms. That had been a long held dream of Bryan's. He closed his eyes, remembering the taste he'd gotten the night before. At the time, he'd been content with that, but now his thoughts dwelled on much more. With no more than an image of his guardian, desire rolled through Bryan. His hand inched down over his bare chest to his already hard cock, rubbing over the front of his pants. Bryan focused on pretending Jaden was there, touching him, and his hand slid beneath the waistband of his pants. The press of his thumb massaged the head as his fingers ran twice over the length. Need surged through him, and he quickly struggled out of his pants. Lying naked on the bed, he drew his legs up, spreading them open. His hand provided a slow, constant torture over his cock along with his thoughts, lusting for his guardian. A trembling started in his legs, and several jerks of his hips tunneled into his fist. "Jaden." Bryan moaned the name, and the speed of his hand quickened. When he opened his eyes, he saw Jaden standing in the open doorway. Though his guardian couldn't see him, Bryan knew he could hear the rough sound of his breathing and his moan. 42
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
"Don't stop, Bryan. I want to hear you come." Jaden slowly approached the bed and sat down next to him. The tips of Jaden's fingers ran over Bryan's chest, and Bryan arched upward against them. His own hand continued running quickly over his cock as he stared up at his guardian. Bryan could see an odd awareness in Jaden's expression as well as a quiet reflection of Jaden's emotions. He took hold of Jaden's hand and pulled it down to his cock. The slender fingers curled tightly around it then Jaden leaned down, taking Bryan fully into his mouth. The suckling of Jaden's mouth produced the most exquisite sensations, and Bryan couldn't control the tremors of his body. A second later, he came, gasping out Jaden's name as the orgasm spilled over him. Bryan floated in that delicious haze as Jaden scooted slightly then leaned over to kiss him. He tasted the flavor of his own come as his tongue slowly circled his guardian's. When he was released for air, Bryan reached out, fondling Jaden's chest. "How come you didn't let me stay with you last night?" "For many reasons, Bryan," Jaden spoke softly. "There are things you don't know about me." "If it's going to come between us like that, I want to know, Jaden. I wanted to wake up beside you." Sighing quietly, Bryan draped his arm over Jaden as his guardian stretched out beside him. The soft silk of his pants was the only barrier between them, and Bryan could feel Jaden was already aroused. "I know you did, Bryan. But it's not an easy tale to tell." 43
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
When his hand slipped beneath the edge of Jaden's pants, Bryan felt the urgent press against his fingers. "How about I return the favor you did me then you tell me what you are hiding?" A smile curved Jaden's lips as he started to laugh. Rolling to his back, he let Bryan strip off his pants. "Do you think I would refuse that offer?" Bryan moved to kneel between Jaden's legs, and his hands ran lightly upward over his guardian's thighs. The sight of Jaden's cock, hard and beginning to leak, had Bryan shifting to stretch out on the bed. "Fuck, Jaden, all I want to do is eat you." A soft pulse of sound answered him, and his fingers kneaded along Jaden's inner thighs before stopping near his balls. The upward thrust of Jaden's hips made Bryan lower his head to take in his cock. His thumbs massaged gently just beneath Jaden's balls as he sucked lightly on the hard flesh. He loved the taste and feel of Jaden in his mouth. His tongue and teeth glided repeatedly around it, rousing Jaden to a greater need. A deepening growl erupted from Jaden's throat, and he began fucking Bryan's mouth. Eagerly, Bryan relaxed his throat to give Jaden full access. Jaden's hands took hold of his head, tangling his fingers in Bryan's hair and urgently tugging. With a sharp cry, Jaden came. Bryan swallowed every drop then lifted his head to look into his guardian's sated expression. He knew it would only be temporary since he already had the feeling they both would have one hell of an appetite for each other. Releasing Jaden 44

from his mouth, Bryan slid over him to settle in against his guardian. "Feel more relaxed now?" "Mmm, you do have that effect on me." Resting his hands on Bryan's shoulders, Jaden raised his head for a kiss. The hungry assault of his tongue thoroughly explored Bryan before letting him go. "It's mutual, Jaden." Staring down at him, Bryan became a great deal more serious. There were a lot of things he wanted Jaden to understand. "I know you realize that I love you, but I'm not sure you understand just how much or for how long I have loved you." Jaden pressed a fingertip to Bryan's lips. "I've felt you for a very long time. It's very hard to explain, but please accept it that I do know." "Then why would you believe anything you could say would bother me?" "Even if I were to tell you that I'm over six hundred years old?" Bryan's eyes widened as he stared at Jaden. When the words sank into his muddled brain, he crowed as he shifted excitedly. "I knew it. Dammit, I knew it!" Sitting up quickly, he laughed in his own excitement. "I haven't been wrong about you yet. I don't really know how I know, but I do, Jaden. I do." Jaden's mouth just kind of dropped open. When he finally found his voice, it took a minute longer to actually form any words. "You're taking this better than I'd expected." "You're a vampire, aren't you?" His voice lowered to a whisper. A light touch of his fingers trailed over Jaden's lips 45

before his head lowered to give him a kiss. Though his existence was supposed to be fantasy, Bryan had always felt as if Jaden must have lived far longer than would be normal. It matched with the odd, personal references in more than one of the notes he'd received from Jaden with his birthday presents. It gave credence to Bryan's own gut feelings about his guardian. No matter how impossible the words were, Bryan couldn't doubt his own belief in them. Jaden gripped Bryan's head gently and broke the kiss. As he smiled slowly at his young lover, both fangs descended. Bryan froze for a second as the reality of his imaginings stared him in the face. The gleaming white of Jaden's fangs held his attention. This time it took him a moment to find his voice, and when he spoke, his tone filled with awe. "Oh, my God." "I don't want you to fear me, Bryan. I need you to know that I would never harm you." "But I already know that, Jaden. I'm not afraid." Before Jaden could say anything else, Bryan's lips sealed over his in a heated, lingering kiss. Slow flicks of his tongue explored Jaden's mouth and daringly ran along the length of one of his fangs. The bite came swiftly, Jaden too dazed in a single kiss to stop it. His fang pierced Bryan's tongue and then Jaden moaned, sucking desperately on Bryan's tongue, savoring every precious drop he could get. [Back to Table of Contents] 46

Chapter Five Pain followed in the wake of Jaden's bite, but Bryan didn't care. His tongue slid slowly against the pressure of Jaden's mouth, letting him take the blood. A shiver ran through him, and he shifted to stretch out on top of his guardian. "It's not always painful," Jaden murmured, mouth moving to Bryan's ear to nip at his lobe. "It can be the most incredible pleasure in the world." "You're the most incredible fucking pleasure in the world, Jaden." Tilting his head, Bryan's fingers curled in Jaden's hair and tried to pull him toward his throat. "Please. Just take what you want." Jaden rolled them over, lodging his right knee between Bryan's legs. Normally pale eyes shimmered and darkened, then Jaden's fangs descended once more as he hovered over Bryan. "Anything for you," he said, half growling. He edged his hand between them, hissing softly when his fingers met hard, hot flesh. Jaden could make him lose control over his thoughts with one simple touch. Bryan's hips bucked, reacting to the feel of Jaden's hand as he drowned in the touch and in Jaden's eyes. His hands lifted to Jaden's head, drawing him in against his throat. Jaden brushed a soft kiss to Bryan's throat before he bit, fangs piercing his skin. He tightened his grip on Bryan's cock, milking his fist up and down the length. 47

A guttural groan vibrated Bryan's throat with the twin sensations washing over him. The momentary pain faded and pleasure blossomed, taking control of him. He arched tighter to Jaden's mouth, fucking against the hand around him. With each pull of Jaden's mouth, the intensity increased in his body until it left him in an uncontrollable shudder. Sticky heat covered Jaden's hand, and words came from Bryan in a barely coherent rush. "Jaden! Oh my God, Jaden!" His guardian slowed his feeding, helping Bryan come down gently. "Very good, love. So sweet." He eased his hand out of Bryan's pants and brought it to his lips, moaning softly, licking it clean. Bryan had damn near lost consciousness to the overload of sensations. Dazed, he clung to Jaden, struggling to bring himself down. Jaden had branded Bryan's body and mind, making him completely unwilling to settle for anything less than what Jaden would give him. "Stay with me?" Jaden nuzzled Bryan, rubbing their noses together. "I can walk you to your classes." "You already had some of my clothes brought from the dorm, and I got the rest of my stuff earlier today. You really think I could leave you, Jaden? I wasn't going to give you a choice except to let me stay here with you." Jaden chuckled and kissed Bryan's nose. "Good. Because I refuse to let you go." "I really do like the sound of that. I've dreamed of being with you, Jaden. More times than I'd care to count."

"No more dreams, love. No more late-night fantasies, longing for a touch far out of reach." Jaden caught his hand and kissed his fingers. "I love you." Bryan gave him a startled look. His first thought had been to wonder how his guardian knew how he spent his nights. "Was that meant about you or about me?" "In truth?" Jaden gave him a sheepish grin. "Both of us." The idea of both definitely intrigued Bryan. "And how would you know that about me?" "Let's just say that, being what I am, I have certain abilities, one of which happens to be the ability to remain unseen." "Sometimes I felt somebody was near me. I used to pretend it was you. It probably was." Bryan found that thought funny as hell. "And you used to dream about me, too?" "I can assure you that it was indeed me, and I can't begin to count how many nights I spent dreaming about you, about your touch." Jaden traced a finger over Bryan's chest, stopping briefly to give his right nipple a tiny twist. "What do you fantasize about, Bryan?" A soft hiss of breath escaped Bryan with the hardening of his nipple. "Wouldn't the answer be obvious, Jaden? I've always fantasized about you; feeling you inside me, and knowing how much you loved me." "When you fantasize about me, what is it you see and feel?" "I never really saw you until now, Jaden. You were always a presence in the darkness. One I knew was with me, and I 49

would imagine your hands on me—" Bryan trailed off when his guardian began to touch him again. For a moment, Jaden became distracted, moving his hands over smooth skin. He shifted until he nestled between Bryan's legs and then he nibbled his way over Bryan's chest, lips closing around one of his nipples. Sucking and tugging on the small bit of hard flesh in his mouth, Jaden slid his hands up Bryan's sides, hips rolling against him. "Oh, God, that too." The feel of Jaden's tongue and teeth made it difficult to talk. All that came from Bryan was a strangled sound of sudden desperation. Now he wanted everything he'd dreamed of. It seemed natural, as it was meant to be. He reached for Jaden, pulling on him. Settling with a soft moan, Jaden kissed him, tongue toying with Bryan's, body nestling between Bryan's legs. "Bryan..." Knowing how highly sensitive to sensation Jaden was, Bryan's hands drifted gently over Jaden chest before inching down to their cocks. Wrapping his hand around them, the movement held them together. An exquisite rush of feelings made Bryan more vocal with the deeper need awakening in his body. Jaden shuddered and pushed against Bryan's hand. He fought to keep himself propped up, to keep his weight off Bryan's chest, but need quickly won over everything else. Jaden growled the sound deep, almost desperate. Understanding, in part, what possessed Jaden, Bryan drew his guardian's head back down, the brush of his lips clinging to Jaden's. "Love me, Jaden. That's all I ever wanted from you." 50
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
Jaden gripped Bryan's hand, stilling the movement. "Stop. Lube first. Otherwise, I'm going to come again and I want to be inside you when I do." He kissed Bryan quickly and pulled away. Getting up, he went back to his room then returned a moment later with a small plastic bottle. Grinning, he popped the top and squirted some of the gel on two fingers. Bryan couldn't help the shiver running though him. His gaze lingered on Jaden's cock. Drawing his legs up, he gripped his thighs, the position opening him. Kneeling back on the bed, Jaden leaned down, his grin widening when he touched Bryan and found him spread open. "Oh. Very nice, love." He rubbed the rim of Bryan's hole with his finger before sliding it inside. The answering smile on Bryan's lips faltered when Jaden's finger entered him and his hips pushed down to feel more. Jaden bit his bottom lip, working his finger in and out. Then he added a second one, pushing both deep, opening Bryan. Bryan couldn't say anything through the sensations swallowing him whole. He could only squirm against the bed and Jaden's hand, needing more. His breathing became ragged before a low, continuous moan erupted from him. Each motion had Bryan craving the feel of Jaden inside him. Jaden pulled back his hand and quickly slicked his cock. Tossing the bottle to the side, he stretched out over Bryan, and at the same time he captured Bryan's mouth in a deep, hungry kiss, he pushed, cock slowly sliding deep inside Bryan's body. The upward movement of Bryan's hips brought his body flush with Jaden's, and gave Bryan an all consuming 51

sense of possession. Eagerly, he returned the kiss, and the urgent rock of his hips made its own demand. Breaking the kiss, Jaden rested his forehead agains Bryan's, the rhythm between them increased, and every slide into the tight heat took his breath away. "Bryan. Love." Bryan could only stare up at him. Every emotion he felt increased tenfold, feeling Jaden's body claim his. The rise of his need was expertly drawn out by the friction inside him, and he ground tightly against Jaden every time he filled him. "Beyond what I dreamed." "Yes." It was all Jaden could manage. He shifted and sat up, gripping the backs of Bryan's thighs. With every sharp push, he nailed Bryan's gland, growling deep when Bryan's body tightened responsively around him. "Come for me," he growled. The torturous rub inside of him sent bolts of lightning skittering through Bryan, making him writhe. When his release hit him, Bryan cried out with the flooding pulses overtaking his senses. Hunger and need crashed over him and Jaden struck, fangs piercing Bryan's throat as he filled his lover's body with his release. Every mouthful of blood pulled another growl out of him. Only when Bryan began to come down did Jaden stop feeding, licking the wounds closed. Bryan's body became limp beneath Jaden's, and his mind slipped beneath the strong waves of pleasure that held him enthralled. Weakened and close to exhaustion, Bryan couldn't even move when Jaden stopped feeding from him. The only 52

thing he wanted to do was curl tightly into Jaden and sleep, yet he couldn't find the energy. Jaden eased out of him and kissed him softly. "Sleep, Bryan." He picked Bryan up and shifted him, pulling the covers over them both. "Love. Always." Bryan murmured, more than half out of it. A quiet contentment at being close to Jaden lulled him into a deep sleep. **** Bryan stirred and felt the solid body beside him. Relief flooded him as he woke next to his guardian. He'd been praying that he would. Draping his arm over Jaden's hip, he noticed Jaden's body wasn't cool to the touch. Instead it was invitingly warm, and Bryan leaned closer to him, pressing a soft kiss to the still lips. His fingers splayed out against Jaden's backside, rubbing over the firm curves as he watched his guardian. Bryan couldn't have explained to save himself how it felt to be with Jaden. Everything was completely right with the world just as it should be. He considered the lines of Jaden's face, relaxed in repose. Though he was undeniably gorgeous, it was far more than that to Bryan. Dark lashes fanned out against the ivory pale skin, the texture fine and nearly seeming translucent. There looked to be something vulnerable about Jaden, beneath the exquisitely sculptured face. Inside Bryan, his own longing rose—not a physical one, but far deeper than that. As if sensing Bryan's thoughts, Jaden's 53

eyes opened. "You will be everything to me. You already know that." Staring into the gray eyes, Bryan was reminded of the color of storm clouds. "I know, but I think I just realized how much you need me." "Then I don't have to explain. It would take a lifetime to do that." Jaden lifted his hand to Bryan's arm, fingers gliding over his skin. "Though I would if you needed me to." "I can feel what's inside you, but I'm not sure how that's possible." It confused Bryan slightly, but he accepted it. "You've known me in your heart for all of your life, Bryan. I've always been with you even if you didn't see me. The only difference now is that you can see me." It made sense to Bryan, and it was true. He nodded then opened his mouth to say something but was silenced by Jaden's lips, wanting Bryan to open to him. The weight of Jaden's body rolled Bryan to his back then covered his just as demandingly. Incapable of thought, Bryan gave completely in the hungering need that flooded him from Jaden. Chapter Six Bryan spread his legs for Jaden, feeling the urgent push of his guardian's body against his. Jaden wanted inside him badly, and the friction of Jaden's cock against the crack of Bryan's ass made Bryan lift his hips. He could read Jaden's every thought because they echoed in Bryan's mind. A deft movement of Jaden's hand grabbed the lubrication, and with a shift of his hips, he slicked it over his cock. Both of them shared the same impatience to be joined. The trail of Jaden's tongue wet Bryan's skin, and a pained sound of need escaped Bryan as Jaden's cock penetrated him. Bryan's hands grabbed beneath his legs, drawing them up. Slow, tormenting sensations stroked within him as Jaden took possession of him. It wasn't only Jaden's body, but his mind as well. Bryan felt Jaden inside and out. Unable to still it, his body pressed harder against each thrust that filled his ass. The second Jaden touched his cock, Bryan's body jerked as he came, sinking into the overwhelming rush. Jaden's hand clawed at his hip and a harsh growl sounded from him as he drove into Bryan, heat spilling inside him. Gasping for breath, Bryan's hands released his legs, then circled around Jaden, clinging to him. When he opened his eyes, his guardian stiffened in shock. Completely stilling, an expression of wonderment crossed Jaden's face, replacing the shock. "I see what you see." 55

Bryan realized he had become his guardian's eyes, letting Jaden see through him. Jaden had so strongly become a part of his mind that he could use Bryan's eyes. He also realized Jaden hadn't seen himself in centuries, barely remembered at all what he looked like. The sensation was slightly dizzying to his guardian, but it didn't seem to affect Bryan at all. "I couldn't even begin to describe you." "Let me see you. A mirror. I want to see you, Bryan." Chuckling, Bryan rolled from the bed and grabbed Jaden's hand, pulling him up. He headed for his bedroom since there was a large mirror over his dresser. In silence he stood in front of it, staring at himself in the reflection as Jaden moved up behind him. Bryan really didn't see anything special in his own features, other than a faint sprinkling of freckles across the bridge of his nose. To him, his hair was merely a non-descript reddish brown, a little past his shoulders. His eyes were slightly exotic looking, the edges tilted up but the same ordinary brown. He looked back at Jaden and saw the arrested expression on his guardian's face. "So young, my love. So beautifully innocent." What his guardian felt came as a shock to Bryan. Jaden believed he was the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen. A gentle hand turned him to face Jaden. "The gift you have given me is beyond anything I have ever received. You've given me all of yourself, allowed me to be inside you. Far more than I dreamed of, Bryan." Bryan felt the sweet chaste press of Jaden's lips, and his arms wrapped around Jaden, fingers playing at the nape of 56

his neck. "You told me you've waited for ages, following me through dreams. What did you mean?" Jaden drew back then caught Bryan's hands, pulling him back toward the other bedroom. "It's a long story, Bryan." Once they settled back on the bed, Bryan curled against Jaden's side, laying his head on his chest. "I have a lot of time." "For the first time, we have a lot of that together." He felt the brush of Jaden's lips against his hair before Jaden rested his head back to the bed. Silently, Bryan waited for Jaden to explain what the words meant. "You may not understand everything I say, Bryan, but I'll do my best to help you understand. You have a very old soul. I've known you most of my life, always known you somewhere close. Each time you were born, I became an unseen part of your life in some way. I've always been your guardian." Listening to the soft cadence of Jaden's voice, Bryan tried to comprehend the words. He remembered no other lives, yet didn't doubt Jaden. Something in him told him he'd known Jaden far longer than made any sense. "I brought you to me once, and I discovered too late it was a very bad mistake to take you before you were truly ready for me. After that I've never interfered and always allowed you to have a human life, just as I did this time. I could never force you to come to me, though I fervently prayed that you would. Always remember I didn't refuse you entry to me because I didn't want you, it was because you needed some kind of life in the outside world." 57
The Guardian by Shayne Carmichael
"How many times have I been with you?" If anything, Bryan simply wished he could remember. What good were lifetimes if you couldn't remember? "Only once, Bryan. This is the first chance I've had to make things right between us. To make up for my past mistake." Jaden's hand slipped into Bryan's hair, drawing his head down. Before Bryan could say a word, the hungry press of Jaden's body pinned him against the bed and the press of their cocks together quickly drove out any thought from Bryan's mind. His legs wrapped around Jaden, then tightened as his hips rocked tightly against his guardian, begging to be fucked. One thrust drove Jaden's cock deep inside Bryan and Jaden's fangs buried in Bryan's throat. Pure sensation rippled through Bryan as Jaden relentlessly drove into him. Pain, pleasure and need enveloped Bryan, and he cried out with it. I take it all from you, Bryan. However and whenever I wish. The whispered words filled Bryan's thoughts, taking possession of him as surely as Jaden's body claimed him. The pull of Jaden's lips created a continuous liquid slide of feelings. His hips arced to the jarring force of Jaden's, and the pleasure inside him left him writhing helplessly beneath Jaden until his release exploded over him. Jaden lifted his head, a harsh growl erupting from his throat as he came in Bryan's ass. Both of them sank under the overwhelming rush that took hold of them. Tears blinded Bryan as he clung to his guardian, lost within the flow. 58

Beneath it all, he could feel the demanding tenor of Jaden's mind keeping hold of his. When he finally opened his eyes, he saw Jaden staring down at him. It didn't matter that his guardian couldn't see him. Jaden was acutely aware of him with every other sense he possessed. In Jaden's expression and thoughts, Bryan read the truth. It wouldn't matter what Bryan wanted, Jaden would have him and would never release him now. Maybe Bryan should have been troubled, but he felt nothing inside himself that even approached doubt or fear. He caught Jaden's hand, twining their fingers together. "You have it all, Jaden." Feeling the tension relax in Jaden's body, Bryan raised his head and pressed a kiss to Jaden's lips. A soft growl answered him before Jaden's mouth covered his, and the hungry probe of his tongue pushed into Bryan's mouth. The metallic taste of his own blood didn't bother Bryan. **** "What happened before, Jaden?" Bryan leaned back in his chair and began to eat his dinner. Jaden didn't turn around to look at him. Instead he poured himself a glass of wine, then returned to the dining table and sat in the chair next to Bryan. "I'm not sure how much good it will do you to know that, Bryan." Since Bryan had no recollection of it, he couldn't help his own curiosity. "I'm just trying to understand. That's all. Did I love you? There's so many questions, and maybe understanding it all will help me." 59

"I believe you loved me at first." Though Jaden appeared at ease, Bryan could see a faint tension in the hand wrapped around the wine glass. "At first?" Sighing quietly, Jaden rested his hand on Bryan's. "I told you before I didn't give you a normal life back then. After a time you began to resent living in my household. You even ran away once, but I forced you back." Jaden fell silent, a pained looked crossing his features. Feeling the turmoil and deep hurt within Jaden, Bryan's hand twisted and curled his fingers around Jaden's. "What happened?" "You killed yourself." Trying desperately not to show the emotions behind the words, Jaden stood and turned away from him. Shocked, Bryan stared at him. He hadn't expected that at all. "I must have been an idiot." "No, you were coerced into something you couldn't accept. I realized that far too late. It's the very reason I waited for you to come to me. But you tried too soon, Bryan. You weren't ready for me yet." It didn't take much to see Jaden had been carrying around a whole shit load of guilt over it. Frowning heavily, Bryan stood quickly and went to Jaden. "You know what? I don't remember that. It wasn't me. Might have been my soul, but it wasn't me. I've never been the least bit suicidal in my life. Even when I'm scared, I would never have dreamed of doing that." 60

"No, you're far more determined than I've ever felt you to be, Bryan." "There's no making anything up to me. Do you understand? Even knowing as little as I do, I'm fairly sure we both made mistakes." Taking Jaden's hands in his, Bryan raised one to his lips, pressing a fervent kiss to the back of Jaden's. "I'll try, Bryan. Some things are very hard to forget." "Then it's about time you do. I'm me, Jaden, and we need to start fresh. I am, you have to too." He had the feeling there were still a few more lessons Jaden needed to learn. "This is the beginning for us. The rest doesn't matter anymore." "I know you're right, and I promise to do my best." Moving closer to him, the soft touch of Jaden's lips brushed to his, sealing the promise. When he drew back, he gently nudged Bryan back to the table. "Now finish your dinner." Returning to the table, Bryan sat down and ate his steak. Jaden took out his violin and started playing. A peaceful cast settled over Jaden's features, and the soft strains of the melodic sound surrounded Bryan. The dance of the long slender fingers and bow across the strings seemed effortless. There were so many things crowding his thoughts, Bryan wasn't sure where to begin. One thing he did know, he refused to identify himself with whatever past soul of his Jaden had known. The thought that some prior incarnation of his had offed himself simply pissed Bryan off. He refused to dwell on that, this was his future, and he would make it what he wanted to be with Jaden beside him. 61

After he finished his meal, Bryan relaxed in his chair, closing his eyes to listen to Jaden play. He had incredible skill, and the beautiful music soothed through Bryan. As the last notes faded, Bryan opened his eyes, watching his guardian. Everything about the man drew Bryan to him. No matter what happened, he was in this for the long haul. Standing, he moved up behind Jaden as he replaced his violin in the case. Their bodies fit perfectly together, and Bryan realized it would probably be a challenge to make sure everything else did, too. Something he wouldn't back down from because he understood all he would gain. Now Bryan had two dreams to fulfill, and he wouldn't let go of either of them. **** A bit of nervousness intruded on Bryan, but he refused to give into it. He waited patiently in the side wing of the stage for his turn. His solo was next, and the last piece in the program. Bryan listened to Anne and Elliot playing. They'd chosen something they'd written themselves, and the lighthearted sound of the music took on a sort of dueling lilt between the two. Bryan had practiced endlessly over the last several weeks to master the Tchaikovsky work. He couldn't play it as well as Jaden could, but Bryan had greatly improved under Jaden and Lazlo's tutelage. His instructor was in the audience and so were some of Bryan's friends. Jaden was supposed to be there as well but Bryan hadn't seen him when he looked earlier. 62

The lights went on in the auditorium when Anne and Elliot finished. The crowd rousingly applauded them as they bowed, then exited at the other side. Bryan strode confidently out onto the stage. Tucking his violin beneath his chin, he laid the bow on the strings and drew a deep breath. The music itself came from deep inside him. His heart was filled with joy and each note he played sang with it. The bow flew over the strings, and his fingers glided easily along the neck of the violin. As he played, Bryan thought of his guardian and the emotions they shared. The melody seemed to fit the excitement and contentment Bryan felt, and the soaring rise of hope in the notes echoed his own future. He understood why Jaden had given him the piece. The music gave way to a calmer reflection into a peacefully softer end. When the last of it faded, the lights went up and Bryan opened his eyes. He bowed in gratitude to the audience and their cheering, then saw Jaden and Earl in the front row. His guardian's expression held a rapt fascination, and Bryan knew he'd pleased him. With a light step, he left the stage and headed for the door that led to the auditorium. He went straight to where Jaden was just rising from his seat. Bryan grabbed his free hand and held it tightly. "You played that beautifully, Bryan. I could feel you in the piece." Jaden's voice was warm in its praise. "Yes, much improved." Lazlo stood to the side, nodding vigorously to Jaden's assessment.

Before Bryan could say anything, Kennedy slapped him on the back with a broad grin. "You're getting to where I can stand hearing you play that thing." "Gee, thanks, Kennedy." "Is this your guardian?" Kennedy peered at Jaden in open curiosity, waiting to be introduced. "Yes, this is Jaden St. Ives. Jaden, this is my worst friend, Kennedy Smith." "Worst, best, it's all the same. Nice to finally meet the elusive, infamous, mysterious guardian." He paused to look at Bryan. "MG, you want to let go of his hand so I can shake it?" Chuckling, Jaden released Bryan and offered his hand to Kennedy. "I've been looking forward to meeting Bryan's friends." Kennedy shook Jaden's hand as he asked, "You two coming to the after party?" Bryan wasn't sure if Jaden wanted to attend, and he glanced quickly at his guardian. Earl stood like a silent ghost just behind his master. A small smile cracked his lips, and Bryan took that as a sign of approval. He rarely saw Earl smile. "We'll be there, Kennedy." Jaden answered. "Then I'll meet up with you two later." Turning to Earl, Jaden said, "Have the car pick us up in two hours." "Yes, sir." After Kennedy and Earl left, Bryan took Jaden's hand and led him out of the auditorium. Outside, they strolled slowly down the sidewalk together. 64

"I don't think it'll ever get better than this. I have you and my music. Can't think of anything else I'll ever need." Bryan's life wasn't perfect yet, but to him it was damn close. Jaden's thumb rubbed the back of Bryan's hand. "I've heard the symphony is looking for a fifth chair violinist. Auditions start next month." "Have you ever thought of doing concerts, Jaden?" While Bryan was interested in the news, he was intent on Jaden. "Until now my music has been a solitary solace. I haven't played in public for more than three hundred years." "You should think about it. Lazlo's been hinting I should try to talk you into it. I think it's a good idea." Bryan stopped, then pulled Jaden closer to him. Silently, his gaze roamed over his guardian's handsome features. The two of them were meant to be together as he'd always known they were. He also realized Jaden's talent should be shared with the rest of the world. He planned on making it his personal goal to convince Jaden of that. "We'll see." Jaden's lips found his, driving all rational thought from Bryan's brain. No one else in the world could do this to Bryan, and he thanked his lucky stars for having his guardian.
