Another Wicked Night Before Christmas By Tierney O’Malley
Tom, this book is for you—again. What can I say. I love you big.
Chapter One
O
h no! You’ve got to be kidding me. What the heck is he doing? This man is a total nut. Amy looked at the giant of a man wearing the thickest ski coat she’d ever seen and black ski pants, trying his best to stay on his feet. I don’t get this man. What is he? Attention deprived or plain stupid. And what’s up with the black hood? And where in the heck is his helmet. The man wore a close-fitting fleece Balaclava that covered his head and neck, leaving only his eyes exposed. She wondered if he was wearing a waterproof jacket with ventilation. If not, he’d be like a roasted turkey right now. He should have worn salopettes like hers. An awesome one-piece suit that she loved. It was similar to overalls, with a front flap and shoulder straps. Best for skiing. Most beginners or newbies or noobs as she liked to call them often bought the wrong kind. They thought ski pants and a thick coat would do. Well, yeah. Kind of. It would help keep you warm, but not prevent the snow from getting inside your 1
Tierney O’Malley coat where it melted. She looked at noob. He’d landed on his butt so many times, she bet he had a good collection of snow along his waistline now. He should have bought an overall. My, just look at that hood. He wore it as if he was going on an undercover mission. Even his goggles were black. Earlier, she saw him pull down the hood to talk to people who happened to notice his struggle. She didn’t see his face though. When the man adjusted his hood again to cover his face, something about what Michael had said about the cold weather hit her. Michael said cold air triggers his asthma. Maybe this guy was just protecting his lungs. He could be asthmatic. With as much subtlety she could muster, Amy studied the man. He reminded her of Michael, her ex. Of course, she’d never seen Michael in a ski suit and he moved like a freaking robot. Yet, this man’s stance that emphasized his height and strong thighs were similar, though the similarity ended there. Where this man moved like a toddler learning how to walk for the first time, Michael carried himself with an air of self-trust, judgment, and abilities. His movements were always swift and full of strength. An aura of strong sex drive oozed around him. To top it all off, Michael would never do anything stupid such as taking one of the toughest jumps in Blackcombe, like Couloir 2
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Extreme. He would never put anyone in danger or himself. He was that—a lieutenant SWAT commander with safety first in his mind. The man planted his pole and just stood there as if he knew someone was watching him. If he would just stand there and not move, he could probably fool everyone into thinking that he was an avid skier, she thought. He looked like one of those hot model guys in ski suits who were probably as clueless as this noob when it came to skiing. Oh yeah, she’d bet her new push-up bra this guy was a noob. If falling flat on his face two times because he couldn’t keep his skis from crisscrossing and losing his poles even before his cute tush touched the ski chair weren’t indications that he was a noob, she didn’t know what else was. He should go back to the lift and take his delicious bum back down to the bunny hill. Sheez, didn’t he see the two big Black Diamonds sign? This jump was designed for expert skiers. And this man, Amy could tell, was not even a bunny hill skier. She bet he still had the price tags for the skis and outfit in the garbage can. Her friend Cara could ski, but even the Devil’s Bowl, a run for good skiers, was too much for her. This man wouldn’t stand a chance. How in the world did he 3
Tierney O’Malley end up here? Whistler should really screen the skiers carefully. If this knucklehead crashed on a tree or broke a limb, Whistler would have to rescue him, and spend time and money on him when they could be using their resources on a more important rescue missions—unavoidable accidents. Unlike this guy who was obviously an accident waiting to happen. What a nut. When she spotted him earlier down below, not once did she see him glide. No, he walked on his skis. And even with his waterproof shell pants that looked expensive, she could see signs that he’d been on his butt too many times. It was hard not to notice him. By the looks of it, it seemed he’d noticed her, too. Earlier, while tying her hair in a bun, she felt a weird sensation at the back of her neck as if someone’s gaze bore into her skin. Sure enough, when she turned around, she found Noob looking at her. Well, she hadn’t been able to see his eyes because of his dark ski goggles. Still, she knew he had been watching her. Now, what the heck was he doing up here in this run? This was the last place she expected to see him. He didn’t look like one of those dare devil type of man who would jump in the water before testing it. No, this man screamed I don’t know what I’m doing! 4
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Amy made a show of adjusting her goggles while waiting for the man’s next move. Maybe if he saw how steep the run was, he would turn around. If he didn’t, well, she’d like to see how this guy would handle going down the Couloir Extreme. Through her peripheral view, she watched the man walk with his skis. Jeysus, he looked as if he just stepped on dog poop. This’ll be interesting. A group of Japanese skiers came kicking off the powdery snow. All were eager to take the steep run. Amy picked a spot behind them where she could still keep an eye on the newbie. It really wasn’t that hard since he was about a foot taller than the rest. Everyone was too busy to notice the guy who dragged his skis instead of skiing on them. Couldn’t this man see that he was so out of place? Lord, he’d have a sore body tonight as if someone whacked his torso with a baseball bat. Why, his thighs must be burning now. Amy sighed. She should applaud this guy though. At least he was trying. Unlike her ex who expressed disinterest in skiing although he’d never even tried to ski. To Michael, it was laughable to spend time on snow and ice wearing coats. Ha! Yeah right. If she didn’t know any better, he was just making an excuse not to leave 5
Tierney O’Malley Arizona so he could be with that woman with super huge watermelon breasts and wide hips that would put a mother bear to shame. Oh yeah. She’d seen a fat bear at the zoo. Her hips were so wide she could carry her baby around easy. And that woman’s hips were exactly like the bears. Fine, women with wide hips were attractive— to some men—and they were said to be biologically capable of bearing a child, more feminine looking, sexy and felt delicious in sex, but that woman was older than Michael. Maybe sixteen or seventeen years, still… Amy scratched her chest as an annoying prick poked at her heart. For Pet’s sakes, how long do I have to deal with this pain whenever I think about you? You don’t deserve to reside in my brain, heart, and in every pore on my skin! And I am positive that you never even thought about me! Amy stuck her pole deep into the snow. Was it only a month ago when the two of them lived happily together? She couldn’t believe eight blissful months of living together turned into stardust because Michael happened to be a man of secrets. And she was so blinded to fall for his charm, drool-worthy looks, and for believing that he truly loved her. Because Michael refused to get a transfer so they could move to Washington, she lived with 6
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas him in Arizona, away from her family, willingly, foolishly with stars in her eyes, and without complaint. And what did she get in return? A heartache so blinding, she thought she’d never be able to recover from it. God, how could he betray her like this? Worse, she was so stupid to let it happen. Love, she learned, makes you lower your guards. All possible signs your boyfriend was cheating—ignored. You become overly understanding and often make excuses for him. That was what happened when she saw Michael’s checkbook entries written for Talaitha Demeter. She knew something wasn’t right. The feeling was akin to seeing a boyfriend talking to a pretty girl at school. It was jealousy. She couldn’t explain it, but she could feel that Michael and the woman were more than just friends. Except for his mother, Susanna, Michael never mentioned any other woman. Never. But she started thinking of possible things why he would give that woman money and never mention it. Like maybe Talaitha was a distant relative who needed monthly support. Of course, suspicion lingered in her mind. It was only after seeing them together that her hunch had turned solid. Oh hell yes, without a smidgeon of a doubt, Michael and Bear Hips had shared the same bed, too. 7
Tierney O’Malley She wondered how long he would have kept lying to her if she hadn’t caught him in a secret interlude with that…that. Ugh! Amy’s blood began to boil, making her feel so warm in her ski suit. Why couldn’t she stop thinking about Michael? Not fair. Amy made a fist of her left hand. Her heart ached at the absence of Michael’s Gypsy ring on her finger. She shouldn’t, but there it was. That dull ache caused by regret and loss. The ring was one continuous piece of metal that had a thick top shaped like a dome where cabochon star sapphires and chatoyant gemstones with a carved surface and unfaceted, were inserted in the middle. Michael had put it on her finger the first night they had made love and she never took it off. He said it was his mother’s only possession, a reminder of who she once was. Michael often talked about Susanna with obvious pride, respect, love, and admiration. It was obvious she meant so much to Michael. Yet, when she asked to meet Susanna, Michael’s only reply was always we’ll see. Why had he not introduced them together? Was it because she wasn’t good enough? There were so many things that she wanted to know about Michael’s family. Each time she asked the question, however, he would quickly change the 8
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas topic. Even his past love life was a mystery to her. Except that it was dry according to Michael. Until they met. At the time, she believed him. After what she witnessed, not so much anymore. Bah, she would never find out anything else about him now. It was over. Amy clenched and unclenched her hand. She could still recall how the ring bounced off the kitchen floor where she threw it in the fit of anger. Michael didn’t waste a second searching for the ring. Within a heartbeat, he was on his hands and knees, running his hands on the white marbled floor not saying anything. When he stood up, he put the ring back on his little finger where it had been since he was a boy of fifteen. She would never forget the shadow of pain that passed briefly in his eyes when he looked at her. Repeatedly, she asked him to explain his actions, along with who the woman was. She got nothing. He remained quiet, staring at her, opening and closing his mouth, but no words came out, breathing as if he was fighting with himself. Mad, she told him not to even bother explaining. Michael didn’t. His silence had caused an even deeper pain inside her chest. Betrayed, all she wanted to do was get as far away as possible from him. Which she had done. Michael didn’t try to stop her. That night, she took a plane back to Seattle. 9
Tierney O’Malley When she arrived at her parents’ house that early morning, she was surprised to find her brother Lucas outside waiting. Apparently, the short message she had left on the answering machine had made them worry that something horrible had happened, so they called Cara and Lucas to come although it was almost one in the morning. Lucas had greeted her while his eyes searched her from head to the tips of her open toed sandals. “Hey, baby girl.” “Hey back. I’m fine if that’s what you want to know,” she replied. Lucas gave her a hug and sighed on her hair before ushering her inside the house. Her mom, close to tears, had hugged her while her dad rubbed the top of her head the way he used to do. When she took the couch, Cara sat down with her and then the fussing started. She was overwhelmed by the outpouring love and support. That day reminded her she’d been lucky to have such a supportive and loving family. However, luck lasted for only a few minutes because, halfway through her explanation about what happened, Lucas started questioning her actions. She had expected Lucas to get mad and perhaps threaten to shoot Michael or kick his ass the way he used to do when they were young. But no, Lucas, ever the levelheaded reasonable brother he was, leaned down, kissed her forehead and 10
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas then went on to say calmly as if world peace had finally happened, that she must have had acted on impulse—like always. He even started ticking off his fingers while naming all of her shortcomings—horrible listener, born without ears, stubborn as a mule, prideful, obnoxious, brat, and quick to jump to conclusion which most of the time was wrong. He added that he wasn’t surprised that she just shut off Michael because she’d done it to him so many times. Not giving Michael a chance to explain only created a bigger problem between them, he explained. After all, Michael could have had a valid reason for seeing the woman. Lucas also added that without hearing Michael’s version of the story, he would not side with either one of them. She wanted to ask Lucas about what he thought was Michael’s reason for keeping a secret, but her brother’s focus had turned to Cara before adding that he nearly lost the most precious woman because she, too, had formed some kind of a false idea about him. Cara made a puppy face, which had broken the tension in the room. Amy knew what Lucas had meant. A year ago, without the family’s knowledge—not even her— Cara and Lucas had become lovers. Before Lucas left for Florida, he promised Cara that he would come back for her. But when he did, he brought 11
Tierney O’Malley back his ex-girlfriend with him. Without talking to Lucas, Cara jumped to the wrong conclusion. It was an understandable conclusion, which had led to a most dramatic, gun shooting and romantic Christmas ever. Sighing, Amy looked at the chair lifts all occupied with skiers and visitors. It seemed like that incident happened just yesterday. Was there a valid reason why Michael supported the bear-hipped woman financially and why he never ever mentioned her name—not even once? Could her brother be right about her being compulsively judgmental? On numerous occasions, Michael said that she was hypercritical, especially when watching reality television shows. Was she, really? Still, she gave Michael a chance to explain. He refused to say anything. He didn’t even stop her from leaving. That part of her story was also ignored by Lucas. Feeling more and more depleted and her conscience fighting to dictate what was right and wrong, she wondered what Michael was up to now. Last she heard, he moved up a position and now a SWAT Commander and still staying in Arizona. She bet his new position added to his appeal now. When she was dating Michael, how many women did she have to scare with her glare so 12
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas they would stop ogling Michael? Too many to count. Now that she wasn’t there to play the role of a possessive girlfriend, he was free for the taking. Did he replace her yet? Terrible pain and sadness at the possibility assailed her. Her eyes began to water. This isn’t how I imagined us to be, Michael. I thought we’d have babies with your blue eyes and dark hair running around the house leaving footprints all over the floor. Rapid talking in French stopped her from sinking deeper into her despair. Ah! Freaking love and jealousy. Can’t exist without the other. Lucas was wrong. There was no other reason why Michael was seeing another woman. He cheated. And that’s that. More skiers were coming. She made a quick glance at the noob and her heart doubled its beating. What the heck! For a minute, she thought she was looking at Michael, but he was not Michael. Unlike this noob, Michael would never take a risk of putting on skis. Maybe she should talk to this guy. But tell him what? That he looked stupid walking on skis and should just enjoy the bunny hill with the preschoolers? What if this man was a psycho? She might insult him and he would kill her with his poles. The image of her lying on the snow 13
Tierney O’Malley bleeding to death actually seemed good. If she died, she wouldn’t have to suffer from her miserable broken heart. Maybe Michael would feel bad and regret cheating on her. However, getting bludgeoned to death sounded idiotic. A pain to stop another pain wasn’t the answer to her misery. No. A good snow-kicking run and a bowl of Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey would be better. Noob was looking at her, unaware that he just stepped on the tail of the woman’s ski. The poor woman probably didn’t expect someone to trap her ski. Her arms flailed before her upper body pitched forward. Sheez! Noob didn’t even notice it. Amy looked away to hide her smile. If she wasn’t in a pissy mood, she’d laugh. One by one, overzealous skiers went down the slope like tobogganing penguins. It was fun to watch them move swiftly, kicking powdered snow, but she bet it would be more fun to watch Noob. An idea popped in her head. Oh yeah, instead of telling him that he looked like a dingwall, she would just watch him and make sure he didn’t wander off the path. She wondered what he would do when he reached the half pipes. Chances were, he wouldn’t make it all. Damn, he’d be lucky if he made the first jump. Amy pointed her skis straight and prepared to push off. Through her peripheral view, she saw 14
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Noob trying the same thing. Holy snikey! He is following me. What? He thought that if he followed someone, he’d learn the art of skiing? Maybe he was a creepy stalker? But he wasn’t really creeping her out. In fact, he was actually entertaining. For some reason, Noob gave her the impression that he would be a good company. Someone who would make her laugh. Amy quickly realized the flaw in that thought. Lucas had told her many times that Ted Bundy’s victims had felt comfortable helping him, too. And now they were dead. She looked at Noob again. If he happened to be a real creep, she could definitely outski him. Or push him over with her pole. Now, if she wanted to see this guy make himself look like a fool, she must stay behind him. Amy felt warmth flow inside her as if she just swallowed a bit of sunshine. Time to have fun and forget about her wounded heart, she thought. Too bad her sister-in-law wasn’t here. Noobs like this guy always made Cara feel a like a pro. This year, she drove up here alone because her parents suddenly made changes with their plans and decided to come up on the twenty-fourth. On the twenty-fourth! Why, the line at the US-Canada Border would be as long as Santa’s list. Knowing her mother’s horrible time management, they would be lucky if they made it here at all. 15
Tierney O’Malley And this morning, her brother, Lucas, and his wife, Cara, surprised her with a call telling her that they’d be here on Christmas because they still have more shopping to do, along with another visit with her obstetrics. She wanted to complain about the odd reasons since Cara had just seen her doctor two days ago, but she didn’t. Cara and the baby’s health were more important than her. So, with disappointment lodged in her heart, she just listened to Cara whine about Lucas who’d been treating her like a porcelain doll since they found out that she was pregnant, forcing her to stay in bed, practically force feeding her and bribing her with classic movies so she wouldn’t do anything. Amy could imagine her brother’s worried face, pacing, watching Cara like a hawk. She’d been laughing about Lucas when Cara asked how her vacation was going so far. When she replied boring, Cara sounded surprised and had asked, “You alone?” Of course, she was alone here in Whistler. She arrived here only a week ago. How was she going to meet someone in such a short time? Not that she was looking. Most people here were spending their holidays with families or someone. Except for Noob. He seemed to be alone. Like her. Oh well, she wouldn’t be a few days. In the meantime, she 16
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas would enjoy her solitude. Once her family arrived, there wouldn’t be time to woolgather. Christmas. It was around this time when fate brought Cara and Lucas together. This would have been hers and Michael’s Christmas together. Would fate look at her and help her find someone this holiday? She glanced at Noob pulling his hood down to his chin. Who knows. Amy adjusted her gloves. There were just five of them left at the top of the run. Time to go. Amy bent her knees and pretended to push. Sure enough, Noob pushed and down he went. One of his skis went up. He wobbled, bent forward, flapped his arms and then managed to stay up. Amy followed behind at the decent space. She noticed Noob look back at her, confirming that she now had her first stalker. She’d call Lucas as soon as she made it downhill. From the speed that she was going, she could call him now—but she’d wait. Lucas had enough worrying to do. She wouldn’t want to add more if she could help it. Amy watched the man try to control his speed by planting his poles. No wonder he kept losing them. Up ahead was the jump that no one would be able to avoid. It was like a hump on the road. She hoped this guy had enough sense to coast. Oh wait, he probably didn’t know how. She quickly shortened their distance, but Noob’s speed picked 17
Tierney O’Malley up. Before she caught up with him, he hit the jump, flying up in the air. Amy heard him say, “Whoa,” repeatedly as if he was reining a horse. Good Lord. Miracle of all miracles, Noob landed on his feet. His knees buckled and his butt grazed the snow. He managed to pull up. Atta boy. The man looked back, then flashed a quick grin. It was a short goggle-to-goggle contact, but enough to make Amy’s heart thump hard against her chest. Shocked, surprised, she could do nothing but gawk. Michael? Could it be… No way. Michael here in Whistler—impossible. He said he hated the cold weather especially snow. And, hypothetically, if this noob were indeed Michael, why would he follow her and not say anything. That was plain stupid, especially when he couldn’t even ski. Calling her would be a lot easier, she would think. Curious, she picked up her speed with an intention to see Noob’s face more clearly, but before she could get near him, two women whom she saw Noob was talking to earlier flocked his sides. A funny scratch of irritation in her chest made her scowl. Those two stole her entertainment. Amy followed close enough for them to hear 18
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas the conversation. “Skyhawk Cabin. Party tonight. It starts at seven. See you there!” one of the women said. Ah, so Noob got invited to a party. Maybe she should pretend not knowing how to ski and fall all over the place. Maybe a cute guy would invite her to his cabin so she wouldn’t have to spend a night alone. Nah, if she went out with a guy, it would be because she liked him, not just for his presence or what he could do to a woman when they were alone together. Besides, honestly, she couldn’t imagine herself with another man but Michael. Cold wind blowing on her face cooled off her irritation. Forget this guy. He’s not Michael, Amy. Stop being so imaginative. Time to ski. Passing Noob, she pushed harder. The Couloir Extreme had some very nasty entrance that gave way to excellent snow. This run was always on her tick list. She followed the road to Saddle, veered slightly to the right, then stayed high on the left. Once she cleared the rock wall, she would traverse off the groomed run to an open slope. There, she could rest her thighs. This run was known for a thigh killer. And right now, she could already feel hers burning. If Noob had a brain, he’d take the escape route. From there, he could take the chair. Time to go. Amy pushed off. She prepared for the bump in the middle of the nadir. She’d 19
Tierney O’Malley definitely catch air when she hit it. She made sure she was centered, and loosened her knees to absorb the bump. Noob—if he was behind her— should do the same or he’d be in trouble. Heck, what does she care what he does? Rock wall was close. She’d be home free. After this run, she’d go back to the cabin. Hot cocoa sounded good right now. She slowed down when on the right, she spotted the snowboarders like a herd of cows. Two of them were carrying their snowboard. Drat! This part of the run was always busy like an interchange on a freeway. While coasting, she decided to take the opening on the left. Before she could make it though, someone zoomed past her. It was Noob. Suicidal? Or he’s trying to catch the blondies? Amy watched in disbelief when Noob dragged his poles, leaving a long line of deep groove in the snow. What the heck. When the man bent low and began dragging his hands, Amy realized he was trying to stop his descent. He was headed directly toward the snowboarders. Oh, my God! If Noob failed to stop, he’d collide with those guys like a speeding car. Without thinking twice, Amy doubled her speed. She schussed faster than what she would normally ski. It was a reckless move, but she couldn’t just watch an accident happen. When she caught this loony, she’d kick 20
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas his ass. By coming up here, he not only put himself in danger, others, too. She skied close to Noob. Their arms almost touching. “Point the tips of your skis together,” she yelled at Noob. “What?” That simple reply shocked her. He sounded like Michael, but she didn’t have time to dwell on the possibility that this noob was indeed Michael. “Make an upside-down V with your skis. Like a slice of pizza.” Amy wasn’t sure if he could hear her. She moved even closer to him, bent down and tried to pull Noob’s arm. “The fuck! Let go,” he yelled. “Fall down,” she replied. When her suggestion didn’t seem to register, she grabbed the man’s jacket. It was like rollerblading while hanging on at the back of her dad’s truck. Amy’s heart pounded when she saw that they were so close to the ramp. The snowboarders were having so much fun they didn’t even notice a runaway. Santa Maria, help us. As a last recourse, she tightened her hold on the man’s jacket, then practically jumped on him. They fell like a timber. The impact sent the powdery snow to fly all around them. Their skis and bodies plowed the snow, her goggles immediately covered with it. Not seeing where they were heading gripped her 21
Tierney O’Malley heart with fear. “Shit!” “Roll!” they both said simultaneously. Impulsive. Her mother had said that one day she’d find herself in a bind because of her impulsive nature. Well, now that it finally happened, there was nothing she could do about this situation, but hope she’d come up with just a sprained ankle or broken thumb. Darn it, she couldn’t even see! Amy felt the man’s arm wrap around her. They didn’t roll, but he kept her on top of him. Finally, after what seemed to be endless sliding, their speed lessened. Quickly, she rubbed her goggles on her sleeve. With her visibility back, she tried to watch where they were heading to make sure they weren’t going to plow into anybody. A few snowboarders watched them go by. She heard hoots and whistles. Great, with her on top of Noob, people must have thought of them as two idiots. By the time they reached the ramp, they were just coasting. When they made it to the piste—the run where snow was compacted and the route flatter—Amy was finally able to breathe. As soon as they stopped sliding, she rolled off the man and laid on the snow until her breathing turned back to normal. She was aware of the man beside her. Hard not to when his arm pillowed her neck. 22
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas It felt good just to lay there, to savor the warm feeling of the sun beating down on her face. A reminder that she was still alive. Tiredness started setting when she remembered that this same man who’d been following her around and sounded like Michael, could have caused them both broken limbs. Eyes closed, she tried counting all the reasons why this man couldn’t be Michael. But his grin, his voice… Possible, but no. She sat up and started brushing snow off her thighs. She looked like a Yeti—all white. “That was the most stupid thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life, Noob.” Using her ski pole with its strap still looped around her wrist, she pushed down on the lever at the back of the ski’s binding to release her boot. She repeated the process with the other. “Did you hear me? My goodness. If you have a death wish, you should definitely go someplace where no one is close enough to save you. Worse, it looks like you picked me to be your rescuer. You shouldn’t have been skiing here. Didn’t you see the sign that says expert skiers only? Lord Almighty! You’re so gutsy to try this run. Maybe you wanted attention, which obviously you’re getting. Well, news flash, Noob. If you go to a singles bar or make a sign need attention and stand on a street corner, you’ll get attention, too. 23
Tierney O’Malley Without putting yourself or others in danger.” Amy removed her goggles and tapped it on her leg. She looked at the man’s skis, then shook her head. “I’m impressed you didn’t lose your skis. Who helped you put those on and how did you even manage to stand without falling. Oh, wait. You did fall. So many times. It probably took you ages before you managed to stand on the those skis. You know, if you really want to—” “Shut up, Amy.” “Whaaat?” “I said, shut up, baby.” Michael lifted his goggles and rested them on his forehead, then turned his head to look at her. Amy froze in her spot. She stared back at him. Sweet Potatoes! If the weather suddenly turned scorching hot as hell and melted the snow, she wouldn’t even be as shocked as seeing…Michael. Michael, here in Whistler? An arm’s length away from her. Hard to believe, but there was no mistaking those haunting deep dark blue-jean eyes shadowed with thick and long lashes even a cow would envy, a perfect nose if it weren’t for the slight bump on the bridge, long jet-black hair, defined strong jaw, high cheekbone and wicked mouth that could kiss. Those wonderful characteristics only belonged to one man. Michael. Yet, she couldn’t wrap her mind into believing 24
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas that this was indeed him. It can’t be, she thought. Michael, lying on the snow, staring at her as if he was making love with his eyes was more than shocking. It was a damn discombobulating. Amy returned the stare until she began tingling all over as if he was actually touching her. She forced herself to shake off the feeling. That was easier said than done, however, especially when Michael’s expression was so enigmatic with his gaze roaming around her face. Then his mouth curved a little as if trying not to smile, but it was gone in a heartbeat. That little smile quickly replaced her shock by rapid breathing and a hint of excitement that bubbled in her chest. “Michael?” “Yes.” Michael covered his eyes with his arm when the clouds moved to give way to the sun that shone even brighter. He groaned and tried to move his feet, but his boots were still attached to his skis. What in the world? All this time she’d been watching Michael and didn’t even realize that it was him. Well, she had her suspicions, but… “Michael?” she repeated, still unable to grasp reality that he was here. “Yup. It’s me. Michael. Michael Murphy, honey, baby, or Noob. Whichever you prefer.” “But what are you…why are you…why would 25
Tierney O’Malley you… Michael?” Michael slowly sat up, shaking his head while vigorously swatting at the powdered snow on his thighs. “Shit, Amy. Don’t try rescuing me or anybody again, will you?” Michael, here. With me. Why? Amy thought she would never see his angel face again, though Michael was no angel at all. Definitely not in bed. Oh, yeah. An angel, she was sure, would never pleasure a woman in bed the way Michael did. My oh my, those mesmerizing blue eyes could make any woman think of naughty thoughts. This woman included. How anyone could look so handsome was beyond her. He was a sin walking on earth, seducing women to abandon their goodgirl image. She leaned forward to have a better look at his flushed face. “Michael?” He sighed. “Babe.” Michael’s sigh was loud enough to blow the powdered snow away. “ Want to see my driver’s license?” “Why?” “To prove that I am—” “No, no. Why are you here?” Michael opened his eyes and then turned his head once again to look at Amy. In a low soft voice he said, “I thought it was obvious.” He leaned back in a sitting position, using his hands for support. The image that he projected 26
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas made Amy’s heart flutter the same way he did when they’d met for the first time. But why was he here again? “I don’t get your meaning. Why are you here?” “I wanted to see you.”

Chapter Two
I
t was the truth. Seeing Amy again had been in his mind since the day she left him. Without her, he couldn’t function right. It was as if his soul was ripped apart from his body. This woman who, at present, was gawking at him, became his breath that he could not live without. “I wanted to see you,” he repeated. “You took the risk of breaking your neck and followed me without letting me know because you wanted to see me. That doesn’t make any sense at all.” Michael shifted from his position so he could grab a handful of powdery snow. “Made sense to me.” “No. Calling me is better. You obviously still remember my name.” “If I did, would you stop whatever the fuck it was you’re doing to talk to me?” “Still a foul mouth I see.” “Born this way.” He threw the snow and 28
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas watched it scatter in the air. “You should have at least tried, Michael, instead of making yourself look like a fool.” Fool. The word had him grinning. Lucas had warned him that a man in love would do anything for his woman, including foolish things. It seemed he now fell under the category…and it felt kind of cool. A talk with McLeod wasn’t a waste of time after all. The morning Amy left for Seattle, his cell rang. Thinking it was Amy, he answered right away. Instead, it was her brother breathing heavily on the other end of the line. Even before he could say anything, Lucas had called him a bastard son of a bitch and threatened to cut off his balls so he could stuff them in his mouth. Michael actually felt glad they weren’t talking in person. There would have been blood between them, he bet. It wouldn’t be an easy fight, but he was sure to draw Lucas’ blood. Vile words flew out of their mouths. Lucas defended his sister, although, he admitted, she was, most of the time, unreasonable. It still didn’t matter, he had said. He would always protect Amy no matter what. Michael was happy to hear Lucas say that. He would do the same thing with Amy and his mother, Susanna. No matter how wrong they were. 29
Tierney O’Malley What really shocked him though was Lucas’ knowledge about his past. He didn’t deny any of it. He even kept his mouth shut when Lucas mentioned his mentor, Murphy. It didn’t take him long to realize that Lucas had done a thorough research on his background. Michael wasn’t surprised at all. An FBI Agent like Lucas, one with a great rep, could dip his hands in sealed documents real easy. The fact that Amy’s brother saw deep into the dark side of his life frightened him. He could lose Amy for good if Lucas deemed Michael unsuitable. Who would welcome a man like him in any family? Right? He didn’t have to mull for the answer. Lucas had given it to him. Lucas knew why he inadvertently hurt Amy’s feelings. He had to give it to the man. He was fucking resourceful and understanding. Michael liked it that Lucas would go extra lengths to make his sister happy, but he didn’t like Lucas’ highhanded way of handling his affairs and the threats that he shouted on the phone if he ever hurt his sister again. The man was a bully. After the big screaming of intimidation on the phone had blown away, he and Lucas talked about what should be done about his situation. Actually, Lucas dictated that Michael do something about Amy soon, otherwise, he and his wife would be forced to move to Alaska to avoid 30
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas seeing Amy’s sullen face and hear her complaints about pig-headed men. And Lucas also added that if he heard one more praise about Michael’s good looks, he wouldn’t be able to keep his food in his stomach any more. That bit had made Michael smile. Lucas might not want to admit it, but Michael could tell the man loved his sister perhaps as much as he loved Amy. He told Lucas that he meant to get Amy back where she belonged. That seemed to appease the man. Even without Lucas’ intervention, he had already planned to follow Amy. Fate, however, had other plans for him and it took him a month to get here. Now, here he was looking at the beautiful woman he wanted to see as soon as he opened his eyes and before he went to sleep at night. Christ, he loved her so much. After his stint at juvi, he’d been walking on a straight line, avoiding doing things outside his limit, and making sure nothing he’d do would open up his record. Now, he couldn’t care less about it, about anything. If he had to cut open his body to expose all memories, experiences, and thoughts, so be it. From now on, no more hiding. But he must do this right. Lucas had offered him a deal—one chance to get Amy back. If he failed, 31
Tierney O’Malley he’d walk away forever. He wouldn’t bung-up this opportunity. He’d get his beautiful soul back. Even if it killed him trying. “Well, I thought it would be cool to try to ski.” “It is. But not on an advance run like this.” Michael shrugged. “I made it.” “Barely.” “Still made it.” “Sheez! And here I was, thinking that you, a lieutenant and a SWAT commander, would never do anything stupid as wearing a ski suit—” “You were thinking about me?” “I meant risking breaking your neck.” “I didn’t break anything. I knew what I was doing, baby. Besides, I didn’t think you’d notice.” “Good grief. For a lieutenant, you sound so stupid. Have you any idea what kind of attention you drew the moment you put those skis on?” “Nice ones. The cashier who sold me this getup gave me her cell number, the lady in charge with the ski rental told me she lives only three blocks away and will get off at five thirty. Also, I got invited to a party.” Amy scowled prettily. “Well, yes, because you probably flirted with them. Besides, you stuck out like a, a dandelion on a green meadow.” “A dandelion?” “Or an elephant in the middle of a herd of deer.” 32
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “Elephant?” “Whatever. My point is, you’re too big and so out of place, it would be hard for you to stay unnoticed. I even saw you right away. Obviously, you know that I’m here. You could have waited at the lodge instead of following me. That’s just idiotic and very irresponsible.” “You changed your cell phone number. I figured you didn’t want to talk to me so why would you even speak to me in person. If you found out that it was me following you around, you would just ski so fast, I would never see you again. And have you any idea how many people come and go in the lodge? I was lucky to spot you the first time.” “I’m still not comprehending what’s going on here. You wanted to see me, but you didn’t want me to know you’re here.” “Not while you’re on your skis, which by the way you’re really good at. Not to mention you look great in them.” “Okay. So you spotted me and then decided to rent skis to follow me. Whistler Blackcomb is the biggest ski resort in North America. I’ve been skiing here for years, but I always find a new run every single time I go up the lift. How did you find out which way I went?” “It wasn’t easy. But when I asked Steve—” “Steve? Elf Steve?” 33
Tierney O’Malley “Yeah. You know him?” “He’s a friend.” Michael scowled. Amy rolled her eyes. “Steve and I became friends last year.” “He told me where you went and your favorite runs. Which, by the way, I thought were at the end of the world.” “I like my runs.” “Guess so. It’s fun watching you. Man, you think I’m getting attention? You should have seen the guys eyeing you like honey to a bear.” Amy rolled her eyes so fast he was surprised she didn’t get dizzy from doing it. “I’m not kidding.” “Okay, you saw me. Now what?” Play my cards and see if I can get you back. If not, I’ll hang myself. Trying to avoid Amy’s confused look, Michael looked straight ahead and focused his gaze at the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. The tri-cable linked the Whistler Mountain’s Roundhouse Lodge with Blackcomb’s Rendezvous Restaurant. Kind of neat to be able to go to one side of the mountain and then to the other. What an iconic tourist attraction and transportation for skiers and sightseers. The whole resort was breathtaking. No wonder Amy was crazy about this place. Too bad she didn’t seem to be as crazy about him. At least not 34
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas anymore. He looked back at Amy when all he wanted to do was wrap his arms around her, kiss her red lips, feel her flushed cheeks against his and say he was sorry. Damn, he missed her so much. He should have been upfront from the very beginning, but he was so fucking afraid of losing her. He’d been rejected before because of his unsavory past, about Susanna. He didn’t want that to happen again. Especially if Amy was involved. No. The moment he laid eyes on her sky-blue eyes, he saw his future with her on his side. When Amy left without a backward glance, angry because he couldn’t give her any reasons for hiding Susanna, he thought fate had made everything easy for him. He didn’t have to break open the lid of his rusty can filled with filthy maggots he called his past. Amy was gone. He thought to accept it. He goddamned tried and resigned with the idea that Amy would never be his. She belonged in a totally different league so he had decided to let her go. And then Lucas called. After hanging up the phone, he realized Lucas was right. He was so dumb to believe the he could just let Amy walk away. It was all bullshit. He talked to his superior about his plan to leave for Seattle. It took him two days to smooth out his busy schedule. The drawback about being an 35
Tierney O’Malley officer was that he couldn’t just call for a sick leave. Following Lucas’ advice to let Amy stew, he didn’t call her until after two days. Then the darn woman had changed her cell number. He didn’t bother telling Lucas about it. He thought, fuck it. She left. And that was that. So he bagged his plan of wooing Amy back. He immersed himself with work to burn his longing, the debilitating ache that ate him up. But everywhere he looked, he could only see Amy. Pain had become unbearable. And so he lost. Now, here he was, armed with his mother’s advice that if a woman loved him, she would love him with or without a sterling background and even if he sleeps with an old and faded bed sheet. Amy could very well be that woman. Michael’s gaze roamed on Amy’s face. She looked so beautiful. His heart ached, thinking that he hurt her so badly she had to run back to her parents. Hiding the past had caused both of them pain. Before the holiday was over, he would bare his soul to her. Counting today, he had three days to do it. But would she take him back? Lucas said Amy would go back to him, but she would give him hell first. “Hello?” Amy waved her hand. “Stop staring. Are you going to answer me?” Here was the opportunity, Michael thought. 36
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Give her the answer. Tell her who you are, why you remained quiet and didn’t offer an explanation. “I’m sorry. There are…” Amy scowled. “What?” The scowl and Amy’s tone made him reconsider his decision. When the dust created by this surprise meeting settled, he would tell her everything. Oh yeah. He’d find the right time to talk about his god-awful reason for being a stupid ass. Man, she was beautiful and still the same Amy who wouldn’t think twice before she acted. When she threw her body on top of him and they started sliding beyond his control, he could do nothing but wrap his arms protectively around her. His heart pounded worse than the time he had looked straight at a fucking sick man’s gun. Its muzzle pointing inches away from his heart. Michael rubbed the spot just below his left shoulder. The wound hadn’t healed totally. He winced at the tenderness on his shoulder. “Are you hurt? Oh my God, I’m going to kill you, Michael. Did you break anything?” Amy’s voice made him smile. She looked so adorable with her eyes round he couldn’t help but tease her. “I think I dislocated my shoulder.” “What? I am going to slowly kill you. Okay, we need to call nine-one-one.” Amy frantically searched her pockets, but her bulky gloves made it 37
Tierney O’Malley difficult. “Just kidding, baby.” Amy stopped, then scowled. “Kidding? What kidding?” “What other kind of kidding is there? I said, I’m kidding, joking. I’m not hurt.” “You’re an ass. Are you sure?” Hearing the concern in Amy’s voice, he smiled. She’d always been a worrywart—always fussing about him, making a mountain out of a small hill, flaying every scene in a movie, making conversation out of a simple thing like rain or a brown leaf. He supposed the latter was what made her a good artist—seeing what others couldn’t see. There hadn’t been any dull moments with her. Staring at Amy, he could still see anger and hurt in her eyes. Fuckin’ eh. He would rather slit his throat than hurt her. But he did. Unintentionally, but he did. Son of a bitch. Give me one more chance and I’ll make this right, Amy. “Yes, nothing got broken. What about you?” “I’m fine. Thanks.” “You look great.” Amy looked away. “How did you know I was here?” “Could we talk about this later? It looks like we’ll have snow showers soon.” “Spoken by a man who knows nothing about 38
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas skiing. Fresh snow is what the skiers love, Michael. FYI.” “Well, I need to get out of this thing.” He pointed at his skis partially buried in the snow. “Fine.” Amy moved from her position, walking on her knees toward his feet. “Can you move your feet?” “Yes. I can do—” “Doubt it.” Amy rolled her eyes. He grinned. He wondered if she realized what she was doing. When they were still living together, removing his boots was the first thing she would do whenever he came home from work and then followed it up with rubbing his feet with moisturizer. It was a simple gesture and yet so intimate. One of the many things he missed when she left. For the first time since she walked out on him, heat like a shot of wine warmed him. As he watched Amy unlatch his boots without difficulty, hope rose in his chest. Hope that they’d be together again. He’d give his damnedest not to lose that hope. His mother gave him an envelope full of newspaper clippings, letters, cards that he hoped would help him make Amy understand why he chose the path for the cowards, afraid to reveal his dark upbringing, why he ended up in juvi when he was only fourteen and lived on the street for most of his teen years. Fuck, that envelope should 39
Tierney O’Malley have been burned. He hated that Susanna had saved all of the evidence of his past. But now, he was placing his hope on that very same envelope. “Thanks. Those things came off when I wanted them to stay on.” “It’s because you didn’t know what you’re doing. Did you even take a class?” “Googled How-to-ski for dummies.” “Lord, have mercy.” Michael laughed. “There is nothing funny about this, Michael. If you got hurt—” “I didn’t. I’m invisible, remember?” Concern. She still cared, he thought. But then, Amy was always like that. A woman with an I’ll-save-theworld mentality. “Lord, you’re an idiot. Stop grinning.” “I’m just happy. Happy to see you.” “Happy to see me? You know some people would feel uncomfortable when they see someone they screwed.” “Amy, I know—” “Last thing you should be doing is to look as if you just won the lottery, Michael. Why are you skiing alone anyway? Did that bear-hipped woman leave you, or it’s the other way around?” “Bear-hipped woman?” “Never mind. I don’t want to hear anything about her.” 40
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “Are you talking about the woman you saw me hugging?” “Do you mean to tell me there are more?” “No. I’m not saying that. But that woman—” Amy threw a handful of snow at him. “I said I don’t want to hear it.” “Maybe you should. You’ll find that—” “Stop. How would you like me to talk about my other boyfriends?” “You have other boyfriends?” “No, but…you don’t get it.” Glad to hear she hadn’t found another, Michael forced himself to control his sigh of relief. He was Amy’s first and he’d try his fucking best to be her last. “Baby, I do get it.” “You don’t. Do you have any idea how your, your—” “Betrayal? My lies? All of the above? Yes, I do know how it feels when someone turns your back on you. Fuck!” Sighing, he shifted his position and then placed his arms on his knees. “I don’t expect you to understand, but give me a chance to explain. I’ll tell you everything you want to know and then you can decide whether to castrate me or give me a big kiss.” “Shush! Just so you know, I’m not going anywhere near your…your…dingdongs. Laughter floated up in his throat. He shouldn’t laugh at her expense, but Amy always said the 41
Tierney O’Malley most unusual thing. “Dingdongs?” “Whatever you call them.” “Dick, cock, rod, wood, phallus, one-eyed moody, penis—” “Michael! Ugh, you’re so nasty. If I go near your penis, I’ll do it in my dreams while I chop it up like onions.” “Onions?” He could tell Amy was trying not to laugh, but a small smile that gave her an enchanting look touched her lips. “I shouldn’t find anything funny about this.” “Baby—” Just like that and the smile on her face vanished. “I don’t want to hear anything about your girlfriends—beautiful or ugly.” “Ugly? I think all women are beautiful.” Amy’s eyes turned into slits. “If you have a smidgeon of respect left for me, you wouldn’t mention your…that woman to me.” Michael sobered up. He’d been trying to make her laugh and lighten up the mood just as he’d done in the past, hoping to ease her anger. He almost succeeded. Almost. He shook his head the way a dog would to get rid of the snow clinging to his hair and face. Time to change the topic. “I’m sorry.” He stood up and offered his gloved hands to Amy. She hesitated, but took his hands anyway. As soon as she was on her feet though, she released his hands. 42
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Amy gave him another confused look, but this time, she didn’t ask any questions. She walked back to where she left her skis, picked them up and then with a sigh, looked at him. “If you want closure, Michael, you have it. You don’t have to put your life at risk by doing this.” She made a sweeping motion with her hands. “I don’t want to live my life thinking that you got hurt because of me.” Michael quickly closed their distance. Taking his gloves off and shoving them in his pockets, he blew on his hands before cupping Amy’s face. Man, how he wanted to take her in his arms and hold her until the snow around them melted, until the sun had set to give way to the night, until the new season began. Fuck, he loved her so much it hurt. “Hon,” he whispered as he rubbed her cheek with his thumb, feeling the soft cold skin. It felt so good just to touch her again. He combed her hair back and reveled at the silky texture. Amy’s sad eyes met his. “What are you doing?” “Just branding my skin, adding more memories of you to last me a lifetime.” “You’re incorrigible. If you want my forgiveness, Michael, you have it. There. You can go. Your conscience is free. Happy Holidays.” Amy made a move to leave, but Michael grabbed her arm. He let her go easily once, not this time. “I’m sure she’s a sensible woman. I have a feeling 43
Tierney O’Malley she’ll accept you no matter what mold you came from, Michael.” Those were Susanna’s words and he’d been hanging on to them. “Let’s go to the lodge or your cabin so we can talk. You’re cold, I’m cold. How about a hot cocoa?” They stood so close together he could see the dark rims around her eyes that often reminded him of the clear blue sky on sunny days. She wore little makeup. Just a hint of dark brown eyeshadow and mascara. Simple and yet, she looked so beautiful. A big snowflake landed on Amy’s cheek. He wiped it off with his finger. “It’s snowing.” “I know.” “So this is what it’s like to be in a snow globe. Kind of nice except if someone starts shaking it, then we’ll tumble all over the place.” “Nobody shook the globe, but you tumbled anyway. The forecast said it’ll snow today, and that’s why I decided to ski. I could have stayed home and watched Pride and Prejudice re-runs. Instead, I came here. Which begs the question, how did you know you’d find me here?” Lucas told him where to find Amy, but the man insisted that he not say a word about it if he could. He said Amy would burn the phone line if she found out. “Drove by your cabin.” 44
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “And?” “You weren’t there. So I came here, hoping to spot you.” “There must be more than a thousand people here. How in the world did you find me? And I could have been somewhere else.” But you’re here. “Most of the roads are closed. I was lucky enough to make it here. It seemed like this was the only place open so, I waited by the lodge, hoping to see you. Besides, you said you like to ski everyday so I took my chance.” Amy gave him a skeptical look. Whether she doubted him, she didn’t say. “You waited how long?” “Since nine this morning.” “You’re crazy. It’s already five.” “Yeah, I think I drank a gallon of coffee while I was down by the lodge. Not a good idea especially when wearing something like this.” He looked down at his pants and thick coat. “Do you know how tough it is to unzip when your hands are frozen?” “No one would know if you went in your pants anyway. You fell so many times, you have big wet mark on your butt.” Michael wiggled his brows. “You’ve been staring at my butt?” “Ha. Ha.” “Well, like you said, there are a gazillion people 45
Tierney O’Malley here. This place looks like the United Nations—all countries represented. But I spotted you when you went inside the lodge for a hot cocoa.” He ran his thumb back and forth on Amy’s lips. She inhaled visibly and her cheeks turned bright pink. “Knowing you, it would take forever before you finish a cup so I went to the gift shop and bought everything I needed. It took me twenty minutes tops to get ready. But I swear, it felt like hours. I was afraid, I’d lose you again.” More flakes fell fast. “And then you started following me.” “Well, you were gone by the time I came back. But like I said, your friend, Steve, bless his Elf’s heart,” he made a show of putting his hand on his chest, making Amy roll her eyes again. “It had made it easier for me to find you. And when I did, I thought it would be best if I kept my eye on you. Didn’t think you’d recognize me.” “I didn’t. I thought you’re just a dork who decided to put on a pair of skis. Seen enough of those around here, but you’re the worse.” A gust of wind caused the snow to swirl around them, pricking Michael’s face like tiny needles. Amy blinked away the fat flakes that clung on her long lashes. He felt her face. They were cold. It must be his imagination, but he felt Amy turn her face toward his palm. Damn, he wanted to feel 46
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas more of her skin, warm them both up with their body heat. “So what do you say? Can we talk?” Amy chewed her lips and tapped her foot on the snow. A habit when she was in deep thought. “Okay. Meet me at the Mongolie Grill at seven. Where are you staying?” “Lonsdale.” “What? That’s over an hour and a half drive from here.” “It’s the closest place I could find. No available rooms here.” “Whistler is the training place for Olympians. This time of year, heck yeah, you wouldn’t find a room here. You need at least six months advance to reserve your room.” Lucas had mentioned that bit information about hotel availability and thought it would probably help his cause if he played his cards right. “I’ll try to remember that. Well, I’ll stay in my car and then I’ll meet you at Mongolian grill” “Mongolie.” “Okay. Mongolie.” “You can’t stay in your car.” “Have done it before.” Amy let out a frustrated sigh. “Oh, if you haven’t notice it, yet, Michael. It’s snowing. You’ll freeze to death in your car.” Michael shrugged. 47
Tierney O’Malley Amy rolled her eyes, then sighed. “Come to the cabin.” Inwardly, Michael smiled at the minor victory.

Another Wicked Night Before Christmas
Chapter Three

my tapped her boots to get rid of the snow clinging to the bottom. They were lucky this year. There had been fresh snow almost every day, which drew visitors by a busload. The sad part was leaving and that would be tough. She’d heard a storm was brewing and heading this way. Lots of people would get stuck here. She looked back at Michael getting out of his car, reaching inside the backseat and removing his gym bag. She recognized the bag. She packed it for him many times when he was called on a job that would require him to stay overnight. Amy took the opportunity to study Michael. His hair was longer than the last time she’d seen him, faint shadows beneath his eyes were obvious as if he’d been missing sleep for weeks. Despite all that though, he still looked wonderful. Mentally, she berated herself. How could she think of him as wonderful and sinfully attractive. He should look like a devil with black horns and a 49
Tierney O’Malley spiked tail. Regardless of her brother’s insistence that Michael could have valid, reasonable reasons for keeping his secret about Talaitha, there was no denying that he broke her trust and heart. He lied. Yet, darn it! All of that I-am-so-over-you bit disappeared the moment she saw him. And when he touched her, all she could think about was their fun times together. Worse, she wanted to wrap herself around him. Holy dove, what the hell was wrong with her? Michael slung his bag on his shoulder, then looked at her. Caught staring, Amy turned around in a hurry. Sheez, Amy. Just take a picture and he’ll last longer. Michael stood behind her. She clumsily inserted the key into the keyhole and turned the doorknob. Jesus, calm down, heart. It’s just Michael. The one who’s kept a secret the entire time you were living with him, remember? Nothing to be nervous about. Warmth welcomed her as soon as she opened the door. Sighing, she dropped her keys on the table by the entryway and left her purse on the floor. Next, she kicked off her shoes. Amy turned around in time to see Michael close the door. Her heart did a somersault when she realized they’d be here together alone. It had been in a rented rustic cabin in White Mountains in Arizona where they’d spent first 50
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas their night together. Very much like this one. Hidden from the busy world, Michael made love to her, many times. It was that first night that Michael placed his ring on her finger. “Nice cabin. Warm and cozy.” Feeling the melancholy settling in, she nodded in agreement and started removing her jacket. “We’ve had this cabin since I was a little girl. This is a second home. Upstairs are the bedrooms. You could use one of the rooms.” “Thanks, but I could crash on the couch for tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll call around. I might get lucky.” “You might find a room in one of the hotels, but it’ll cost you hand and foot.” “Hand and foot is fine as long as they don’t ask for my di—” “Michael!” “What?” “Fine. If you want the couch, you’ll get the couch. Guest bathroom is through that kitchen door. On the right.” She hung up her jacket in the closet and then turned to look at Michael. “I’ll hang your jacket.” “Thanks.” Michael shrugged off his jacket, then handed it to Amy. It was still warm and held Michael’s familiar scent—Obsession cologne and something uniquely Michael. She held the jacket against her 51
Tierney O’Malley breast for a minute before grabbing a hanger. She hung the jacket in a hurry, afraid that she’d end up rubbing her nose against the fabric like a child missing her favorite blanket. “I’ll turn on the coffeepot. Do you mind if I change real quick.” “No. Need help?” Amy raised her guard back up again. “Even if I did, I’d never ask you.” “Meow!” “I think you’re suffering from brain freeze, Michael. You surely are acting like one.” And I feel like kissing you. Lord help me. Amy went upstairs, changed and returned back downstairs, but didn’t find Michael there. She went to the kitchen to check the coffee and heard the guest bathroom shower running when she passed it. Thinking about Michael in her cabin, in the bathroom, sent shivers all over her body. Not even an hour ago, she thought about seeing him. Now he was here. The thought aroused a mixture of feeling from deep inside her, causing her hair to stand on its ends. Rubbing her arm, she tried to refocus her mind. Nothing could beat a steaming mug of coffee on a time like this. With her back toward the door, she busied herself with her new Starbucks Barista Grande. She had just finished stirring coffee when she felt a presence. Michael. It 52
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas was his habit, to watch her work in the kitchen. “Snow is falling so hard. I hope your parents make it here.” “Me, too.” She turned around. “How did you know about my parents…” She nearly dropped the mugs of coffee she held. Oh, sweet double layered cake. Michael showered and changed into his faded blue jeans with tattered hems where his toes peeked. His white long-sleeved shirt with scooped neck molded to his body like a second skin. Holy guacamole! “You were saying?” Amy’s mouth opened and closed. Oh no, she must look like a fish out of water. “I was saying something?” “Never mind. So it’s just you and me here. Nice.” “Don’t get any ideas.” Michael laughed. “Come on. I saw that look in your eyes.” “What look?” “The same look you gave me when we stayed at White Mountains.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Yes, you do. It was our first night together in the cabin, remember?” Michael started walking toward Amy—slowly. In contrast to her breathing, she felt like she’d 53
Tierney O’Malley been on a speed skiing competition—heart pounding, legs feeling like noodles. “That was a long time ago. Forgot about it.” “Let me remind you then. It was late at night and quite breezy, a respite from a hot day.” Michael stopped when they were only inches apart. “You were wearing your pale yellow dress. I remember saying, you remind me of butter cream that I want to lick clean. I’m sure you remember it, too. Admit it.” “Well, whether I remember it or not doesn’t matter, so you need to stop bringing up the past. Are you ready to have dinner at Mongolie?” Michael placed his hands on Amy’s hips, his thumb found the space between her white silk long sleeves and hip hugger jeans. “You looked so beautiful that night that I could not stop staring at you. I thought to myself, what did I do to deserve this woman.” “Michael…” “That night was the best night of my life, baby. You gave me reason to see the world differently, to believe that even someone like me deserves a bit of heaven.” Michael inched his hands higher and then stopped when he reached the undersides of her breasts. “Stop this, now, Michael. Don’t do this.” Even to her own ears, she could hear her half-hearted 54
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas plea. She could have pushed his hand away, but didn’t. Instead, she took a step closer. Michael smiled, then pulled her even closer until there was no space between them. He kissed her forehead before leaning his cheek on the side of her head. His hands like hot pokers sent sparks of excitement all over her body. “You told me that night that your heart belongs to me. It was a gift that you would never take back. No matter what. You gave me more than what I ever hoped for in life. “ Don’t let him sweet talk you, Amy. Push him away. He’s a cheater. “Like I said, it was a long time ago.” “Not that long, babe. I still burn thinking about that night.” “You said you wanted to talk to me. Why don’t we do that? Talk. Like you said.” Darn it. She was a mumbling idiot. “Let’s do that.” “I’m here, hon, hoping that your heart is still mine.” Michael placed a hand on Amy’s cheek and stared at her. He would kiss her. She knew it. Her mind screamed that this was wrong, that she should push him away. Yet, as she watched him lower his head, she did nothing but wait while hiding her nervousness. Amy’s heart pounded so she could hear her blood gushing in her ears. Michael’s effect on her 55
Tierney O’Malley was the same as it was. Being this close to him was like standing out in the middle of the sweet smelling field with butterflies flittering everywhere while the sun kissed her skin. He was so attractive, oozed with sex appeal, and oh so dangerously smothering her with hot indecent feeling. Don’t be stupid, Amy. “I haven’t given it away, if that’s what you want to know.” Amy tried to battle the whirlwind of emotions that assaulted her, to show that she wasn’t affected by his seduction. But the moment their lips touched, she lost. Instead, she moaned and leaned even closer to him. “Are you taking it back then?” “I…don’t know. You hurt me.” “Let me explain.” Oh my God! This isn’t happening. Amy, you toad. Don’t let him see that you miss him. Make him talk first like your dear brother suggested. But all thoughts about why she shouldn’t be kissing Michael flew out of her head once he gave her upper lip a gentle suck while his tongue rubbed on it. Amy felt herself glow from the heat caused by their nearness. “Amy, baby. I miss you.” Michael traced the fullness of her mouth before claiming her lips. His tongue, like a fiery wine, reminded her how she missed this, too. Desire raced through her, 56
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas causing her to throb. Michael caressed her lips with his mouth while his hands travelled up and down her sides and arms, setting her aflame. “Remember our first time?” How could she forget? She lost her virginity that night. Michael’s kisses became urgent and exploratory just as his hands began inching up inside her shirt. Amy felt her bra loosened. She felt heavy and needy and oh, God, wicked. When Michael cupped her breasts while sucking her shoulder, she heard herself moan. Unable to remain on the receiving end, she combed Michael’s hair with her fingers and guided him back to her lips. Jesus, the contact was so delicious she didn’t want it to end. Michael seemed to want the same thing. He lifted her shirt over her head, then tossed it on the counter. Her bra didn’t stand a chance. It, too, joined the shirt. Michael’s lips began exploring her heated flesh. He licked the base of her throat, nipped her chin, sucked her shoulder and then showered wet kisses all over the tops of her breasts. “Michael…” “I miss you.” Michael surprised Amy when he picked her up. Their position was so intimate with Michael’s face directly in front of her breasts. Amy felt her cheeks grow warmer from embarrassment, but as 57
Tierney O’Malley soon as Michael suckled her nipple, all embarrassment or shame was forgotten. She watched Michael’s lips trap her nipple between them. His eyes were closed, but his face registered pure pleasure. She raked his hair with her fingers and thrust her breast, giving him more of her flesh. Her heart ached. She missed him, too, so much. She wrapped her legs around Michael’s hips while he walked back toward the living room. Slowly, he lowered her on the couch. His body followed. The familiar weight of his body against her nearly made her weep. Oh, how she missed this, him. “Please tell me this isn’t a dream.” “No. But why are we doing this?” “Because we belong, Amy. We belong.” He planted a tantalizing kiss on Amy’s lips and then in one swift move, he sat back on his heels. He unbuttoned her jeans and then shucked them in a hurry. Without taking his gaze off Amy, Michael slowly ran his hands on her thighs. Amy began breathing through her mouth. The anticipation, knowing what would happen next, heightened every second. “You’re beautiful,” he said. Through her white lacy panty, his fingers grazed Amy’s pussy. “And I missed you so badly.” Words seemed hard to find, reason seemed to 58
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas have flown. All that was left were lustful feelings mixed with excitement, warmth and darn it all, love. Amy’s legs opened up on their own accord. “I miss you, too, Michael. But—” “Shh…no buts for now, baby.” Michael pressed his fingers on her still-covered pussy, teasing her clit. “You’re warm and moist.” He partly covered Amy’s body all the while keeping his fingers where Amy pulsed. “I want you.” Amy ran her hand on Michael’s arm, feeling the hard muscles move beneath her palm. “Michael…” “Yes…” His tongue traced the fullness of Amy’s lips. “Open for me, love. Yes, let me in.” Hot and ready, Amy opened her mouth for a drugging kiss. Michael thrust his tongue deep inside in time with his fingers pressing hard on her clit. Oh, how she dreamed of this, of being in Michael’s arms. She gripped Michael’s arm when he moved her panty aside to finally touch her pussy. Amy’s hips bucked. “Fuck, so wet. Look at me.” Amy forced open her heavy lidded eyes. While staring at Michael, his fingers penetrated her slowly and deeply while his thumb concentrated on rubbing her clit. She thought she’d climax right then. “You’re mine,” Michael said and then pulled his fingers out to lick them clean. “Sweet.” 59
Tierney O’Malley “Oh, God.” “I’ll die a hundred times if I wake up another morning without you by my side.” “You killed me when you refused to answer my questions and then let me go.” “I’m an ass. I’m sorry.” Michael smiled and then his fingers were back inside her. “Let me make it up to you.” “Michael, this is—” Michael penetrated her mouth with his tongue again. Deeper this time. He began pumping his fingers. “Michael!” Amy felt her body heat rise as his mouth moved down to her neck, shoulders and to the rise of her breasts. She loved being kissed there as much as Michael loved to suckle her. Running her hands on the silky smooth texture of Michael’s hair, she waited for his lips to capture her nipple. She didn’t wait long. Michael cupped her breast, pushed it up gently and then finally, his warm mouth wrapped around her achy nipple. “Jesus!” “Love that, huh?” He blew on her hard flesh, licked it and then sucked her once more. While his fingers moved in and out of her, Michael’s tongue and lips tortured her breasts sweetly. But he wasn’t done with his double assault. He left her breasts to lower his body even 60
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas more until his mouth was directly above her pussy. “I miss your taste, my love. Will you let me?” With her mind cloudy with passion, Amy nodded. “Yes, please. Now.” Michael pulled her lacy underwear off, balled it and tucked it in his pocket. He kissed the insides of Amy’s thighs while his fingers spread her pussy lips. “Fucking beautiful. Baby, you’re hot.” He gave Amy’s pussy one long lick. “Ohh…Michael, more.” “Spread your legs, love. Yeah.” With two fingers, he finger-fucked Amy while sucking her clit. Amy panted, seeking heaven as Michael ate her pussy. Jiminy Cricket, she was so horny. She wanted to come. She gripped Michael’s hair, her hips mating with his mouth. “Hmm…that’s it. Fuck my mouth.” He pulled his fingers out only to replace them with his tongue. “Come in my mouth, love. I want you to— like before.” “Don’t stop, Michael.” She cupped her own breast and looked down to watch her lover. His eyes were closed, his lips wet from her juice. The image was so erotic it triggered the beginning of her climax. “Yes, yes!” Michael groaned as he sucked her entry, drinking her before giving his attention back to 61
Tierney O’Malley her clit. He pulled it with his lips, suckled it and raked it with his teeth. Finally, he concentrated on sucking her and didn’t stop until Amy’s climax exploded. But Michael didn’t stop. He kept on sucking until she felt like crying. “Hmm…delicious.” “I want you. Come to me.” Amy raised her hand, motioning for Michael to come. “I’m all yours.” Michael stood up and began unbuttoning his jeans. Amy watched him strip. Her heart lurched at the sight of his white boxers. She could see the imprint of his long and hard cock. Lord, he was huge. Michael’s shirt followed the pile of clothes on the floor and then he positioned himself in between her legs again. He raked her body with gaze. Should she stop him? Was it too late? They weren’t an item anymore. Her heart battled with her mind and won—easily. She looked up at the powerful set of shoulders and then she saw it. An angry reddish scar. All thoughts of having him buried deep inside her flew out of her head. “Oh, my God, Michael!” Ignoring her naked breasts, she pushed herself to a sitting position. “What happened?” She raised a finger to touch the scar, then stopped. “Is that a 62
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas bullet wound?” “Yeah, but it’s nothing. Where were we?” “No, no. That’s not nothing. That looks so painful.” Michael cupped her face, then his mouth covered hers hungrily. “Other part of me is painful,” he whispered before reclaiming her mouth. Exploratory, demanding, urgent, so delicious. Those were the only few words to describe his kiss that sent warm feelings in between her legs. The beginning of excitement began building inside her again, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the scar. She turned her face away from him before she gave in to the temptation and attacked him herself. “Tell me what happened.” “Not now. I want you. Ready to come again?” “Michael, I want—” “Good. You’ll get it.” “Dodo head. What happened?” Sighing, Michael’s hand lowered to her shoulders, kneading her flesh. “A pedophile shot me.” The word shot sent a horrible feeling inside her chest. She scooted closer to Michael, practically straddling him. “When did this happen? Must be recent.” “A month ago.” “You could have died.” Tears blurred her 63
Tierney O’Malley vision. She couldn’t imagine Michael bleeding and in pain. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” “No worries. Told you I’m invincible.” “No you’re not.” “Okay, I’m not. Can we talk about my scar later. I want you, baby.” “But your scar is still red. You should—” Michael pulled her against him. “Stop now.” He wrapped his arm around Amy’s hips, lifted her a bit and then guided his cock right on her entry. “Sweet mother…” While he let out a tormented groan, Amy gasped. Her worry about the scar flew out of her head. Right that moment, there was nothing more wonderful than the feel of his hair-roughened chest against her flesh and his thick cock penetrating her inch by inch. The sheer pleasure of having him once again overrode everything else. “Fuck. Ride me.” With Michael’s strong hands helping support her weight, she moved her hips…slowly at first and then in a fast tempo. The position gave her control. She ground her hips, rubbed the sweet spot against the length of Michael’s cock, and loved every minute of it. “Baby, are you still on the pill?” “Yes.” “Small blessings.” 64
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Amy rode Michael hard. Feeling his balls beneath her ass made her hiss. She could feel her orgasm quickly peaking. “Michael…Jesus…” “You coming again, love?” “Yes,” she whimpered her reply. Michael’s arm tightened around her waist. He gently lowered her back on the couch, pumped three times and then pulled out. “Michael!” “You’ll come.” And then his mouth was back on Amy’s pussy again. Amy screamed his name as she felt the first wave of her climax. “Fuck, yeah!” Michael shifted from his position again, nudged her thighs wide apart and roughly thrust his cock deep inside her. The couch groaned. His balls slapped her ass. They both moaned, and oh God, she didn’t want it to end—but it did. Wet, warm and satisfied, Amy buried her face against the crook of Michael’s neck. If this night was merely filling a moment of physical desire for Michael, and she unknowingly allowed him to tear apart her soul for the second time, so be it. Where they were, why he was here, and the pain of his betrayal meant nothing right now. Tomorrow, when she was all rested and adjusted from his unexpected visit, she’d face the damn consequences. Surely when her mind was cleared, 65
Tierney O’Malley she’d be able to sit down with him and talk. It would be easy.

Another Wicked Night Before Christmas
Chapter Four
S
he woke up from her sleep with a hangover. Not from alcohol, however, but wild sex. Not only that. Michael’s ring was back on her finger. How she ended up wearing it, she had no idea. She’d been pulling and tugging it, but couldn’t remove the band. What in the world? Did she gain weight and her finger turned into a round sausage? She must get this thing off otherwise Michael might think that sleeping with him meant they were back together. They weren’t. Lots and lots of sex didn’t mean a beginning of a new relationship. Amy wiped the window with the edge of the sheet that she wrapped around herself. It really was a winter wonderland out there. Perfect for those who loved to stay indoors and cuddle. Well, she made her own cuddling last night. After the initial sex on the couch, they moved upstairs where they continued to please each other. Damn, she acted like a horny whore. The 67
Tierney O’Malley first day she saw Michael again, she forgot everything, including his secret bear-hipped woman. What did she tell herself last night? Oh, damn the consequences. Lord, she must be nuts. She could have gotten all the answers to the questions that had been plaguing her, Instead, she just went on and soaked up the pleasure of making love with Michael. Dang it. What could he be thinking about her right now? That he could cheat on her and all he had to do was touch her and he’d be forgiven? Yes, she still loved him, but her feelings shouldn’t supersede her actions. It was her love that put her in the miserable position in the first place. Incensed, she tightened the sheet around her. “Way to go, Amy. Just a touch and you easily caved in. I am such a fool,” she said aloud. Well, what could she do about it now? Nothing. But she’d be able to do something about the next hour of being around Michael. Yeah. This time she would be wise enough to run when Michael started oozing with powerful charm. She looked at the ring on her finger. It was back where it used to be. Why? Could it be his way of saying forgive and forget? Something warm flowed through her at the thought. However, her reservations as to what his real intentions were dimmed that glow. Love would never grow if shadowed by a broken trust. If Michael indeed 68
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas wanted her back, could she trust him not to break her heart again? What about the bear-hipped woman? Was he just going to turn his back on her? Anger once again erected the barrier around her heart. Until she heard Michael’s side, she shouldn’t let his sweet words lead her to bed again and she shouldn’t let him glimpse her feelings for him. Her love for him had not died yet. Not yet. It would probably take a long time before that happened. But it wouldn’t survive forever. The ring caught the ray of sunlight. It glistened like snow when exposed to the morning light. She tried to pull it off again, but the dratted thing just wouldn’t come off. Maybe soap would help. Time for a long hot shower. Michael was already in the kitchen cooking breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon and pancakes. Her favorites. Darn. Did he have to cook? In his wrinkled jeans and shirt that badly needed ironing no less. Sweet syrup, he looked damn wonderful. How could he pull that off? “Damn.” Michael turned and gave Amy his smile. The kind that would make any high school girl giggle. Kind of like what she wanted to do right now. Jesus, I’m losing my mind. 69
Tierney O’Malley “Is it too snowy for you to go out?” “No.” “I thought I heard you say damn because you’re trapped in here.” “The kitchen smells damn good is what I meant.” “It’s a good damn then.” “Yeah.” She practically sigh the word. “You don’t have enough groceries here to last you a week, but you have enough Kit Kat to last you a year, I think. I’ll walk to the store after breakfast. I went outside earlier to look around, but I didn’t go very far. Man, everything is buried. The only way to go from here to there is by foot or skis. Seems someone shook the snowglobe.” “Oh dear. Passes must be closed. You’re stuck here. My family isn’t going to make it on Christmas Eve. I’ll be celebrating Christmas alone.” “Alone? Don’t worry. I’ll be your stay-in cook and helper until your family arrives. In exchange for the couch.” “Lucky me. Michael, about last night—” “Was great. I forgive you for seducing me.” He placed two plates on the table. Each had a mound of strips of bacon, two eggs and two golden brown toasts. Amy scowled at the food in front of her. “You must have someone else in mind.” 70
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “What do you mean?” “I don’t eat like a bear.” “I know. But we missed dinner and with all the exercise that we did last night—” “Not funny, Michael. Look, last night we got carried away. You missed me, I missed you, but the couch and the bedroom deal shouldn’t have happened. Not between two people who are no longer a couple. This is the last place where you should be. I think.” Michael pulled up a chair. “Sit down. Bacon is good when it’s hot. And I know you’re starving. Sorry we didn’t get to go to Mongolie.” “You’re changing the topic.” “Your choice of topic can cause indigestion?” Michael winked. Amy ignored his flirtation and kept a calm façade. “You said you wanted to talk to me. Is that all?” “Hmm…no. I’ll tell you later after you eat.” “If you don’t tell me what you want, why you’re here, I’ll go nuts! I hate waiting. Did you know that my mother wrapped my Christmas presents in a cookie tin every year so I wouldn’t be able to see what’s in it?” “Yeah, you already told me that.” “So you know that I hate waiting. The suspense is killing me. Except, what you’re going to tell me is not like a present, right? So why not tell me 71
Tierney O’Malley now, huh?” “Okay, I’m here because I want you to understand me. Who I really am. But I want to do it when you’re ready to listen.” “Who you really—are you married to that woman? Or you’re going to tell me that you two broke up so now after a month, you want to see me again. I’ll never be ready to hear that. What kind of a woman would I be if—” “If keeping a secret is considered cheating, I guess that’s what I’m going to explain. Why I cheated.” “I asked you that night, Michael, and you refused to give me an answer.” “Because I was afraid to give you my answer.” “Why?” “I was afraid of losing you.” “And yet, you cheated.” “Yes. I acted dishonestly, cheated you of your right to know who I am.” “What do you mean who you are?” Michael ran the tips of his fingers on his forehead. He looked uncomfortable. “What I am… Baby, I don’t want us to be over. I refuse to believe that we are over.” I need a hearing exam. “We are not? Are you saying that I just imagined the whole month of not having you sleeping beside me at night, of not having you bugging me in the morning, of you 72
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas hugging someone else and the pain that it cost me? Did I just imagine all that?” Pain flickered in Michael’s eyes. But she could have just imagined it because it was gone in just a heartbeat. “And what is this about who you are thing?” Michael pulled up a chair and started poking at his eggs. “What I am and who I was are two different persons.” “Oh, no. Please don’t tell me you’re a modern case of Doctor Jekyll. You know, the central character in Robert Louis Stevenson’s story, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A separate personality thing.” “No, nothing like that.” Amy relaxed in her chair. “You scared me there for a minute.” “What you’ll learn about me might still scare you. Amy, I don’t expect you to forgive me for not coming out clean, but please give me a chance to plead my case.” “Sounds like my brother talking.” Michael’s mouth curved into an unconscious smile. “Oh, no. You talked to my butt-head brother, didn’t you? “If it would make any difference, he threatened to cut my balls if I hurt you again.” Amy rolled her eyes. “I don’t believe this. So you lied to me when you said you drove by this 73
Tierney O’Malley cabin.” “No. I really did that. Lucas just pointed me in the right direction.” “And he told you I’m not home?” “Texted me. I knew you weren’t home anyway because the lights were off. So I went to the lodge. I didn’t lie. I just didn’t tell you everything.” “Why would you do that? Talk to him, I mean.” “He started it.” “What do you mean he started it?” Michael picked up a bacon strip and slowly began chewing it while staring at her. He was dawdling. She’d bet her pink toes on it. “I’m not supposed to know. He told you not to tell me, right? Because he knew I’d kick—” “Baby, he loves you.” I knew it. Lucas will side with me. Ha! “Of course he loves me. But why go behind my back?” “It’s the way of the men. As it happens, he made a good move by calling me. I got to know a bit about him and he got to know everything about me.” “Everything. You mean including your Jekyll side?” Michael nodded. A look on his face didn’t suggest anything. His sudden appearance, here in Whistler of all places, really surprised her. She really thought they were over and would never see each other 74
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas again. But now he was here and looking at her like a lost puppy facing his savior. What are you hiding from me? “Want to tell me what you told my brother?” Michael frowned. “Hey, I have an idea. I’ll give you my Pandora’s box.” “Pandora’s box?” “There is a Manila envelope in my bag. It contains every dark secret of my life. You can read it in exchange of a tour after breakfast. Show me around.” Never in the months that she’d shared with Michael had she seen this side of him—unsure, uncomfortable, afraid. Not even his arrogant smile could hide that last fact. “What dark secrets do you harbor, Michael? You have more than one? Please don’t tell me you were a serial killer before I met you. Are you an arsonist, rapist…gay?” That last part comment made Michael laugh. “None of the above, love. Come on. It’s beautiful outside. There are so many people walking, kids playing in the snow. I heard people going ga-ga about a Wishing Christmas Tree. What do you say?” “Michael, obviously you wanted me to know something. Now is as good a time and not later to start telling me.” “We’re not that old to grab the now. One of the 75
Tierney O’Malley many benefits of being young is we can always wait and say later. So, eat, then, we’ll go out.” “Do you honestly think that I’ll be able to walk after what you just said?” “Come on. Walk with me and you’ll hear everything. If you say no, not only that, you won’t know what I just told your brother, but I’ll also tie you in bed—naked.” “What?” “Although, I hope you’ll say no.” Just like that and the man she knew was back. If Michael wanted to buy time to pack up his courage, then so be it. Even if it killed her to wait. Damn, she hated waiting. “Can’t believe this. I’m surprised you could still stand-up.” “Me, too. The way you made me work last night—” “Shut up!” Amy tore a piece of her pancake and threw it at Michael. It whizzed past his ear. “You wasted my awesome pancake.” “You’re not funny. I’m talking about your legs. First timers are always sore the next day.” “I know.” Again, Michael gave her a knowing grin. “Michael! Michael Murphy, I am talking about your sore legs from skiing. You’re such a dork.” Michael picked up a slice of bacon and waved it close to Amy’s nose. “Eat, so you’ll clear your mind. You’ve a dirty mind this morning.” 76
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “Me? I give up. I’ll just eat and ignore you. And we’re not walking. You shouldn’t do anything strenuous anyway. You might reopen your wound.” “Hey, you know my line of work, babe. We do heavy exercises. My legs are fine, my wound is fine. Now, my heart is not gonna be if you refuse me.” What she wanted was to talk, not walk. Besides, she didn’t want Michael to take a chance of slipping on snow. Not to mention her legs were a bit sore. But she wouldn’t let Michael know about it. Lord, the way he lifted her leg… Stop brain. Just focus on the bacon. “I saw you struggle yesterday and thought you’d be in pain. Plus, in your condition, you shouldn’t do anything strenuous. If your stitches decided to burst open, I wouldn’t want to be held responsible. “You made it sound like I’m a decrepit old man.” “I’m just saying—” “I know, worrywart. I want to see the Christmas Wish Tree.” “Seen it every year.” “I haven’t. Do you really hang wishes there? Maybe I should do it, too. Did you put yours up there already?” “No. Not yet. I did last year.” 77
Tierney O’Malley “Did somebody grant your wish?” “No, nobody answered.” “Maybe you asked for the impossible. What was it?” Wicked Night Before Christmas. “A foolish wish.”

Another Wicked Night Before Christmas
Chapter Five
A
my stood by the door, arms folded across her chest as she watched Michael pace in the middle of the room while he was on the phone. They were about to leave when Michael’s phone rang. It was his superior calling. From what Amy heard, Michael hadn’t finished his shoulder therapy. What a nut! He should be resting, not walking around the village. As soon as Michael pocketed his cell phone, Amy walked over to him. “I heard what you said. You skipped therapy.” “I don’t need it. Just a waste of time and money.” “Oh, you think you’re hotshot now because you’re a commander, that you don’t need medical treatment?” “No. I just think coming here to see you is more important than seeing the six foot tall, dark-haired Russian physical therapist who enjoys digging her fingers into my skin.” 79
Tierney O’Malley “I don’t see why you couldn’t enjoy her.” “Honey, I would if I didn’t have a glimpse of her hairy armpits.” Amy couldn’t help it, but she burst into a hearty laughter. Michael was always good in making her laugh. Whenever she was in a dark mood, he always found a way to lift her spirits up. Michael walked to over to the couch where he left his bag. He unzipped it and pulled out a crinkled Manila envelope. “Come here.” Sighing, Amy walked toward him. “What?” “This is my past life. I’m giving it to you. Look at it.” “Now?” “Later.” Michael tossed the envelope on top of the bag. “Baby, I know I was such a pig to hurt you. You have the right to hate me. But I hope everything that you learn will change what you think of and feel about me. Sorry, I messed up.” Why was he talking like this, as if he’d be gone from her life forever. As if he was saying his goodbyes. “Why don’t you just tell me what’s in the envelope? I’m all ears now. You can talk about Talaitha and I won’t get mad. Maybe a little, but I’ll listen. I want to hear it all.” Michael raked his hair with his fingers, giving it a messy look. “I’m never comfortable talking about my past. It’s better if you just look at the 80
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas papers. You’ll find everything about me and my mother in there.” Michael stepped forward to hug her tightly. “Maybe I’ll go for a walk alone later while you read. If you find me despicable after finding out who I was, leave my bag outside and I will not bother you again.” She had no idea what she would find in his manila envelope, but whether it was good or bad, she knew she would still love him no matter what. Whether she’d take that love to the next level, she didn’t know. One thing was for sure though, she was afraid to let Michael out of her sight. Of what or from whom she couldn’t tell. In the past, whenever Michael left their apartment to go to work, her stomach would clench, she worried so much about him. Still, there was confidence, too, and trust that he would be fine. This morning, however, wasn’t one of those days. He wasn’t going to work. They would just go for a walk to see the Christmas tree. So why have this fear knotting in her stomach. What the heck? “I will not form judgments based on what I’ll find in that manila envelope alone. I want to hear everything from you.” Michael cupped her face, staring at her intently as if memorizing her face before giving her a kiss that brought tears in her eyes. “Is this your way of saying that you still love me?” 81
Tierney O’Malley Of course she loved him. “Love has nothing to do with it.” Michael smiled solemnly. As if he didn’t really feel like smiling. “I’ve never met a woman as stubborn as you. “What if after reading, I find that your past is not despicable at all?” “Then the ball is in your court.” With so much tenderness that pulled at Amy’s heart, Michael held her close. “If you decide that you want me back, I promise that you’ll never regret it.” “What are you going to do?” “To start with, I’ll show you the most wicked night that you and I could both share.” Wicked night? **** Yesterday, he was so close to giving up. It would be the easiest thing to do. To pack up, leave and forget that there was hope of getting Amy back in his life. But after what happened last night, the way Amy clung to him, responded to his touch, had helped him gather his thoughts and stay. Maybe it was just his imagination, but he felt she still wanted him. A chance still existed. He would bide his time. It was a good thing that Amy had finally agreed to go for a walk. She grumbled though and called 82
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas him a horrible bully while she shoved an Under Armor skullcap on his head, helped him with his gloves, zipped and buttoned her jacket before wrapping a thick Alpaca scarf around his neck. He didn’t mind though. In fact, he enjoyed her ministrations. He always had. She’d been that way since he’d known her—a little mom. Walking outside in the freezing cold wasn’t that appealing to him. But if it would mean another day with Amy, he’d do it. If after laying all his cards she decided to reject him, at least he’d have this last moment with her before he’d leave for good. Outside, snow fell heavily that it looked like it was already late in the afternoon. Walking around the village made him think he’d been to heaven. All white, everyone was in good spirits and nice, and the air smelled so sweet. So Christmassy. Being here felt like being transported to a different world where anger, pain, worries and differences didn’t exist. Here, problems that he faced every day, danger, pain and suffering seemed a planet away. His idea about walking wasn’t bad at all. “A snowball for your thought?” “I’m just thinking how beautiful it is here. No wonder you’re addicted.” “Snow and Christmas season. Plus hot cocoa. Can’t beat that. You don’t get this in Arizona.” 83
Tierney O’Malley “No. But I wouldn’t have that place any other way. I learned to walk and talk there. My whole life evolved in Arizona. I became the person I am now because of that place and I will never leave it. On occasion, I’ll go somewhere. But to turn my back, no.” “Wow. Deep man. You should run for a gubernatorial position. I bet you’ll get elected.” “Funny.” Michael spotted an ice cream store that was open despite the freezing cold weather. The most surprising part was that there were people in there—eating. “What the heck. Aren’t those people buying ice cream cold enough?” “Boy, you are out of your league. That there is the best ice cream parlor in town. You won’t find Cows anywhere. Only in Whistler.” “Cows. Is the ice cream coming out of the udder?” “Dork. Do you want to have a cone? I want one.” “Do I get to squeeze the udder?” “No. Do you want ice cream or not?” “Don’t know. My balls are already frozen. I don’t want them to crack and—why are you laughing?” Amy was laughing so hard she started snorting. “I just have this horrible image of your…your things looking like little ice balls.” Michael grinned. This was the Amy that he 84
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas remembered. So easy to laugh, jovial, playful and sensual. “Hope you won’t have nightmares tonight. I’ll think about ice cream later.” He grabbed Amy’s hand and they walked on the shoveled path toward the Christmas tree. They stopped in front of the store selling nutcrackers. “When I was a boy, I used to dream I was the Prince Nutcracker saving the queen.” “Just a prince and not a king?” “No. I always kill the king. He was nothing but a rat. All of his minions were the same so I always kill them all, to keep the queen safe and happy. It was the only way.” “Was it a recurring dream?” “Yup. Always the same.” “In your dream, did you ever get caught?” “Many times. But someone was always there to bail me out.” **** Surprised at the seriousness of Michael’s tone, Amy decided not to comment. She’d never heard this dream. If it really was a dream. She had a feeling Michael spoke about something real. Glancing at him, she saw that he was deep in his thoughts. Was his dream a part of his dark secret? She wanted him to go on and tell her more, but the two women who invited Michael to a party joined 85
Tierney O’Malley them. Just like that, the frown on his face disappeared, replaced by a jaw-dropping smile. “Hey, ladies.” The women tittered. Amy thought if they batted their eyelashes a bit faster, they’d blow her away. “Hey, you. What happened last night? We waited, you know.” “Sorry, ladies, but my girlfriend…” He made a show of putting his arm around Amy. “Said no. She’s on the craving stage now. Eats Kit Kats all the time. I have to be around her so if she runs out, I could quickly grab whatever she wants. She gets cranky easily. If you know her like I do, you wouldn’t want to be around when that happens.” “Oh, come on. You didn’t say you have a girlfriend. You were skiing alone,” said one the woman with super blonde hair that shone like the hair on shampoo advertisement. “Her condition prevented her from skiing.” “You’re just saying that. You look single to me,” piped in another woman whose boobs could probably poke someone’s eye out. What the hell. Am I a ghost and they can’t see me? Annoyed, Amy tried to dislodge Michael’s arm, but he tightened his hold on her. “Again, sorry, ladies. But this here is my place.” Finally, the women looked at her with annoyed expression on their faces. And then one of the 86
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas woman opened her mouth. “Why?” That’s it! “Why?” Amy nearly shouted. “What the hell do you mean why? Just because I don’t have oversize breasts like yours, lips that looked like bees feasted on them, and fake eyelashes doesn’t mean I can’t snatch a man. But you wouldn’t understand. I can see that nothing is inside your brain but nasty fluids sloshing around.” “Rude,” big-boobs huffed. “Rude?” Her eyes boring into the woman’s eyes, she snarled and took a step forward. “Michael?” “Yes, honey.” “May I borrow your gun?” “What for?” The women proved to be slow and didn’t catch her meaning. They just kept on looking at her with their brows arched up so high while looking at her through the tips of their noses. “I’ll prove to you that these two will deflate like cheap balloons once I put bullet holes in between their eyes.” She finally got a reaction, the women actually looking worried now. Surprisingly, Michael bent forward to pull out the gun that he tucked in his boot and handed it to her. 87
Tierney O’Malley The women gasped, their eyes big and mouth open. They looked at Amy, then at the gun before running away, screaming as if their hair was on fire. Amy wanted to pick up a snowball and hit them hard at the back of their heads. “That was your fault.” She gave the gun back to Michael. “Mine?” he asked, tucking the gun back in his boot. “Yes. If you didn’t introduce me as your pregnant girlfriend, I wouldn’t have had to stoop to their level.” “Sorry. My mistake. I should have said my pregnant wife. Next time.” “You’re a silly goat.” “Oh come on. They’re just jealous. It’s Christmas. Lighten up. Listen to that music. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. My favorite. Are we close to the tree?” “Yes,” she snapped. “Let’s go this way. Please watch where you walk. If you slip, I’m not going to help you up, you know.” “I know you will.” “Ha!” They walked along the Village Square, browsed at different stores and bought candies from practically every candy store they spotted. Chewing a laffy taffy candy, she unwrapped a Red Licorice Swirl Salt Water Taffy and popped it in 88
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas Michael’s mouth. “I don’t even know why I’m walking with you. Feels like I already gained ten pounds from all of these candies.” “You could gain more.” “And end up having fat hips like a bear? I’m sorry, but I’m not going to be—” Michael stopped her with a kiss. “I love you.” “You can’t just kiss me whenever you feel like it. And stop saying I love you. I’m having a hard time believing it.” She scowled. However, when Michael lowered his head again for another kiss, she met him halfway. Michael pressed his lips on her temple, then whispered, “I just did.” Amy shivered from the warm breath that tickled the hair at the back of her ear. “You know what? I think that you think that I’m cheap. That you could just reappear in my life as if nothing happened and I’ll just tear my clothes off and sleep with you.” Even as she said the words, her grip on Michael’s coat tightened. “No, babe. I would never think of you like that.” He put his hands on her shoulders in a possessive gesture. “I respect you.” “Right. That’s why you kept another woman behind my back?” “There are only two women in my life. You and the woman that you saw. Her name is Talaitha Demeter.” 89
Tierney O’Malley Amy scowled. She tried to move her shoulders to dislodge Michael’s hands. “I know. Saw the checks that you wrote to her.” “I’ve been supporting her since I got a job at Maricopa County, mopping floors at the age of fifteen. Captain Murphy gave me the job in exchange of a stint at juvi—” “You’ve been a juvenile delinquent?” “Yes. Does that shock you about me?” “Not really. I know you’re not one hundred percent angel. Is that your dark secret you were talking about?” “One of the many secrets.” “God help us. You’re making me nervous. So this Talaitha—” “I think I’m going to have an ice cream cone.” “Right now?” “Yes, right now. I want an ice cream cone.” “I get it. What you want is for me to stop my inquisition.” “What I want is to enjoy this walk with you. Didn’t you say you want to buy a new pair of gloves? Mine aren’t any good. Are we close to the tree?” Amy stopped his babbling with a kiss. They were in the middle of street with piled-high snow and dark clouds above them, but the moment their lips met, she felt the sun shine on them, the summer breeze blowing, she felt so warm. 90
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas When Michael raised his mouth to look into her eyes, he said, “That was nice.” “You really are uncomfortable talking about your past, aren’t you?” Michael replied with an arrogant shrug. “Alright. We’re not going to talk about it until I read everything in that Manila envelope of yours. So, let’s go see the tree.” “Hey, I want to check this store. Come on. We might find something interesting in there.” Amy stopped and looked at the store’s name. “What? Why ever for. Just Like a Woman is a store for women who need help finding the right size.” “Come on.” Michael tugged her hand. When she didn’t move quick enough, he wrapped his arm around her waist and dragged her inside. Two middle-aged women with sunny smiles and hair that must have taken hours to fix greeted them. The brown haired woman who introduced herself as Linda, sported an Amy Winehouse hairstyle while the other woman named Marsha with platinum blonde had straight as a pin long hair with bangs who looked like a Cher wannabe. Amy had seen the store before, but never really checked it out. She thought the store was so out of place—it boasted undergarments, for crying out loud. “Hello there. Welcome to our store,” Linda greeted. 91
Tierney O’Malley “Hello,” Michael replied. “You have a nice store.” “Thank you. Just Like a Woman is more than a retail store. We have everything that a woman needs. You know, when a woman’s body changes, so do her undergarments. That’s where we come in.” “If you need any assistance or advice, just let us know.” Marsha looked at Amy. Her gaze settled on her stomach. Consciously, Amy flattened a hand on her belly. God, she shouldn’t have eaten six slices of bacon and three pancakes. Now she was as bloated as a fish left out in the sun. “You sell mostly lingerie?” “Yes, dear. We sell a lot of undergarments for special events. If you are a skier, do not underestimate the importance of wearing the right support for your titties.” “Titties?” Amy glanced at Michael who was grinning from ear to ear. “Now, now, Linda. Don’t say titties. Young couples nowadays use the word boobs or racks. We have to use their lingo to be cool.” Martha gave Amy a big smile. “We have a huge inventory of strapless bras and bras for nursing mothers. Are you two expecting changes soon?” “Yes—No.” Michael and Amy replied simultaneously. 92
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “Can I talk to you for a minute?” She grabbed Michael’s hand and pulled him in the far corner of the room. “You can find our best selection of bras for nursing mothers in that section. I recommend a soft, unstructured bra to take with you to the hospital.” “Thank you, Martha,” Amy said without breaking a stride. Once they reached the spot between two racks of bras with huge cups that would fit watermelons, she stopped walking. She peered back at Martha and Linda. They were still watching. She waved at them before looking back at Michael. Hastily, she let go of his hand, folded her arms across her chest and raised a brow. “Those two, I think, believe that I am pregnant. And it is your damn fault.” “I hope so.” “What—no, no. It is your fault for forcing me to eat your breakfast and half a pound of candies. Look at me, I’m bloated. Did you bring me here to get a girdle for my stomach?” “Never crossed my mind.” “Then why? This place is for women who need a special kind of undergarments.” She pointed at a pair of bras on the rack close to Michael’s head. “Please don’t tell me you want to shop for Bear Hips—” Michael cupped her face. Before she could say 93
Tierney O’Malley anything, his mouth covered hers. It was the kind of kiss that meant to shut her up. However, shivers of delight followed his touch. She couldn’t stop herself from wrapping her arms around him. Before she could return his kiss though, it was already over. Heat suffused her cheeks when she realized what just happened. Her embarrassment quickly turned into annoyance. “You’re taking too much liberty of kissing me.” “I like kissing you.” “To shut me up, you mean. Which reminds me, are we here because—” “No.” “Stop interrupting me when I’m talking.” “Then don’t say silly things.” “Answer me. Are we here to buy something for your woman with hips that looked like a momma bear’s?” “What the…you mean to say Mom—” “Why are we here?” Before Michael could reply, the store’s glass door opened and slammed onto a rack so hard it was a surprise it didn’t break. A screaming woman followed in. “Help! Call the police!” A man with a military style haircut and red-face followed seconds later. He quickly flipped the hanging on the door to Close. “Anyone who calls the police will die on the spot.” He then screamed 94
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas at Linda and Marsha while waving his gun. “You two! I will fucking shoot if you move.” “No need, man.” Michael stepped out from between the racks. The man’s eyes bulged. He looked surprised to see them standing there. “Do you mind if my wife sits down? She’s dizzy and—” “She’s carrying,” Marsha butted in, her voice tiny. The man started waving his gun again. “Don’t pull anything stupid.” Michael squeezed Amy’s hand. It didn’t take her long to understand his motive. She feigned faint and her knees buckled. Michael caught her before she hit the floor. It was quick, but she knew it when Michael pulled his gun from his boot, then tucked it behind his back. “You okay, honey?” “Just give me a minute. My dizziness will go away.” With a nod, he helped Amy stand up and then gently shoved her behind him. “Please, sir. If you need money, you can have everything in the register. Just—” “Shut the fuck up, woman, or I’ll shove this gun down your throat.” Linda covered her mouth right away, her eyes big with fear. 95
Tierney O’Malley “I don’t want anything from any of you. What I want is to get rid of this whore who ruined my life and our children’s lives.” “I’m sorry, Rolly,” the woman’s tiny voice quivered. “Sorry my ass.” “I’ll go back in the car. We can get the kids and fly back to Florida. They are not involved in this.” “They are now. It’s your fucking fault. If you just listened to me, we wouldn’t be in this goddamn store. You’re a bitch.” The man screamed the last word and yanked the woman’s hair. The woman screamed in pain. Amy grabbed Michael’s jacket. She wanted to do something to help the woman, but the man looked deranged, out of his mind. She would do well not to challenge him. “Anyone of you call nine-one-one, I’ll send you all to your grave. No one leaves this store.” “Please, please, Rolly. Just let me go. Our children are—” The sound of flesh hitting flesh echoed in the store followed by another scream that made Amy cringe. When she looked at Michael, she actually gasped. The transformation in Michael’s expression was something she’d never seen before. Gone was the smile, the face of an angel. He looked formidable. He looked ready to kill 96
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas someone. “Our children? Yeah, you took our children away from home so you could come here with your fucking boyfriend. You think I’m stupid?” “Rolly, please.” **** Michael started walking toward the man, but felt Amy gripping his jacket. He gave her hand a quick squeeze and then she let go, but not before she whispered to be careful. He took another few steps, then stopped when he was four feet away from the bastard. Oh yeah, this yo-yo had no fucking right to threaten him or anyone. Michael didn’t care about the couple’s marital problems, but when the husband pointed his gun at Amy, it became personal. Oh yeah, Rolly here would pay. And by the time he was finished with him, he’d wish he was dead. That would be if this filthy scum was still alive. “Let her go, man. And the other women as well.” The man pierced Michael with a look that he bet he’d used far too many times. Michael, however, wasn’t affected. He’d seen a lot of this bastard’s kind. They use force, threat, fear, to get what they wanted. But he knew deep inside, they were cowards hiding behind their guns and quick fists. 97
Tierney O’Malley “This is none of your fucking business. I’ll let everyone leave when I say you can leave.” Michael could see in the man’s eyes that he was beyond reason. Whatever Rolly and the woman argued about had brought him to the edge. “It’s okay, man.” “The fuck you mean by it’s okay. Nothing is going to be okay. You know why? Because this bitch is a fucking cheater. She ruined our family.” Blood dripped down the woman’s nose and lips. Her swollen cheek told Michael that he had already struck her earlier. She must have tried to escape and ran into the store. He gave Linda and Marsha a quick look. They were clinging to each other, their faces beyond pale. The woman who looked to be in her forties looked at him. Her blue eyes bright with tears. Anger sizzled deep inside Michael’s chest. The fucking ass had been beating this woman to submission far too many times. He wanted to smash the man’s face with his fist and watch him bleed. “Let’s talk. Lower your gun.” The man pointed the gun at Michael. “I want you and your wife to stay where you are.” “Don’t you dare point that gun at him!” Amy moved to stand in front of Michael. He tried to shove her back behind him, but she pinched his arm instead. “You horrible, rotten bastard. Shoot him and you’ll regret stepping foot in this store.” 98
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “Did you just call me rotten?” “I did. Now, prove that you’re not. Drop your gun and let us all go. Maybe the police will not toss you in jail for being such a pathetic loser.” Unimaginable fear knotted in Michael’s stomach. He expected bullets would start flying any second now due to Amy trying to save him and actually doing the mediating. Jesus Christ. He put his hands on Amy’s shoulders and tried to move her, but his baby refused. He had to lift her up just to get her out of the line of fire. His hand moved behind his back. God damn it. He couldn’t believe what was happening. “Don’t you fucking call me a loser.” “Okay, man. Just calm down. Amy, move,” he ordered, growling the last word. Amy ignored him. “Only a loser would do whatever, this is your doing. Stop this now and show that you’re a good man. You’re hurting your wife, for pity’s sake.” “Hurting? Do you have any idea what she’s doing to our family?” “No, I don’t. But I am sure whatever it is, you can talk about it without the use of violence.” “I doubt you’ll say that again if you find out the person you love the most is cheating on you. Now, shut the fuck up. I just want to get out of this goddamn place and take my children with me. No one can stop me. Not even this…” He pulled the 99
Tierney O’Malley woman’s hair harder. “Bitch.” Hell, Michael’s fingers itched to reach for his gun. He clenched them instead. “I can see you are in so much pain right now. Loving someone is not easy. But this is not the answer to your problem.” “Oh, yes, it is.” “You’ll lose your chance of being able to do that if you keep pointing your gun at your wife. Let the women go. We can talk about what you want. I’ll help.” “Who the fuck are you? Santa Clause?” Michael decided not to answer the question. “I can help. Let the others go.” Amy pulled at his jacket. “Michael, no! I’m not leaving without you.” Again, Michael ignored Amy. “Are your children in the village?” “Fairmont Hotel,” the woman answered. “They’re waiting for me.” “You will never see our children again. Remember that.” “Please don’t do this,” the woman begged. Her tears that smeared her mascara kept on rolling down her cheeks. “You should have thought about it before you ran away with your boy toy.” The man pressed his gun to the woman’s temple. Michael moved his hand behind his back and wrapped his fingers on the grip. He had a good 100
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas shot, but he wanted the others to be gone in case he missed. Not likely, but anything could happen. Besides, shooting a man in front of Amy wasn’t in his book. Yet if he must to save her and the others, he would. “I’ll personally help you see your children, man. Let’s talk.” The man looked at Michael and then at Amy. Michael noticed him glance down at Amy’s belly. “We have two kids. A boy and a girl. I love them more than anything.” “Then don’t rob them of the right to have a mother.” “They are better off without a mother than to have one who subjects them to humiliation.” The woman shook her head in denial. Her nose was running and mixing with her blood. She looked like a doll exposed to severe heat and began melting. “If you kill your wife, what do you think will happen to your children?” “No, no one’s going to take my kids away.” He looked at Amy again, then yelled, “I don’t kill babies. Go! You!” He looked at Linda and Marsha. “Get the hell out of here.” “Thank you.” Linda touched her with her shaking hands. “Oh, God. I’m not going to die,” Marsha said, her lips devoid of color. 101
Tierney O’Malley “I’m staying.” Amy held Michael’s hand. “I’m not going anywhere.” “Go, Amy. I’ll see you at the cabin. Linda, take her with you.” The two elder women surprised Michael. They moved as if they were in their twenties. “Come on, dear. You can wait for your husband outside.” “No. Michael, I’m staying.” He had not missed the flare of temper in her tone, but this was not the time to argue. “Amy, get out of here now!” Michael said with reckless anger that forbade any further argument. “Michael, I love you.” To the man, she said, “Hurt him and I swear to God I’ll hunt you down. And when I find you, not even the pigs will dare eat whatever’s left of you.” Amy, along with Linda and Marsha hurried out the door. “You can leave, too. I don’t need you here.” Right. Like that’s going to happen. “Don’t leave!” the woman pleaded. Her chin quivering and her hands shaking like a leaf on a wintry day. “Oh, yeah. They can all leave. This is between you and me, whore.” He pressed the gun to the woman’s cheek. “Enough is enough. The kids and I don’t need you. The world doesn’t need you. You’re a scab on the face of the earth. No one will miss you. You’re going to hell.” 102
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas The man took his eyes off Michael. It was the moment Michael been waiting for. He whipped out his gun and then fired and followed it up with another one.

Tierney O’Malley
Chapter Six
P
ressing the button on the fireplace’s remote control to high, she watched the fire roar. Michael insisted that he go out for a walk while she read the documents. It had been an hour since he left. He’d be back soon and most likely freezing. The room quickly filled with heat higher than she would prefer. But with her hair still wet from her shower, its temperature felt awesome. She sat on the couch and placed the envelope on her lap. Amy stared at it as if it was a venomous snake about to strike her. Michael had said that everything she wanted to know about him was in this envelope. What would she do if she found out that Michael had been married before and with children? Was that Talaitha Demeter his wife? Wait, didn’t he say he’d been supporting her since he was fifteen? Were they brother and sister? If that was the case, why hide her? Oh don’t be a goof. Just open the damn envelope and 104
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas stop with the questions. Pulling out the stack of old papers, she read the pages, which turned out to be a birth certificate. She thought it belonged to Michael. Except the last name was Demeter and not Murphy. The birth date however was the same as Michael’s. What the heck. The section where the father’s name should be listed was blank, but the mother’s name showed Talaitha Demeter. A Greek Roma. “Oh God! Tala’s your mother?” But Susanna. Who was she then? Michael, honey. What in the world are you hiding? Who are you really? Michael was born nine pounds and twenty-one inches long. He was a big baby. His purple footprint on the left hand side corner of the certificate made Amy smile. She ran her finger on the print. “Aww, you’re flat footed.” Setting the certificate aside, she picked up a newspaper clipping. Her eyes zoomed in on the old black and white picture of a young man in handcuffs. It was Michael. She quickly read the short caption. Michael Demeter, 17 surrendered to the police after beating his mother’s customer. Talaitha, Demeter’s mother and a known prostitute in Sunnyslope, Phoenix, suffered from a broken arm and nose after a fight with Rashid Buthan. Talaitha told the police that his son acted to protect her. 105
Tierney O’Malley “Oh, my God.” Amy stared at the grainy picture of Michael. His face as hard as granite, but even at a young age, she could see pride in him. She picked up another clipping. This one Michael, long-haired, was leaning against the police car’s hood, with his hands cuffed. He was only fifteen. Amy read every news clippings including the letters, birthday cards, Christmas cards from a retired detective named Murphy Santos. In all of the stories, the detective was always there. She found two pictures—one of Michael sitting on the grass, shirtless and hugging a golden retriever, a lawn mower behind him. He was skinny, in need of a haircut and smiling at the camera. The other picture looked to be a graduation picture. Michael, in a dark blue uniform, was shaking hands with Murphy Santos. Amy turned the picture over. Arizona Law Enforcement Academy. From what she had gathered, Talaitha, an orphan, changed her name to Susanna when she was raped at the age of seventeen. Michael was the result of that. With no family to speak of, she raised Michael alone. Talaitha met a man who eventually led her to prostitution. Michael, however, had spent most of his teenage life in and out of juvenile detention centers. Murphy Santos took Michael under his wing, helped him get on his feet and join the academy. Intelligent, 106
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas determined and dedicated, Michael excelled in academics and quickly rose to becoming a lieutenant. So this was his secret. He didn’t cheat, he just didn’t want her to know his background. “Baby, I will love you no matter what. You should have told me.” Another clipping dated only a month ago had caught her attention. The news was about a hostage rescue mission led by Lieutenant Michael Murphy. A pedophile holding a child. Amy scanned the news and read aloud. “Lieutnent Murphy dropped his gun and belt. With his hands up, he tried to talk to the girl’s captor. The man then shot him. Oh my God.” Amy’s heart must have stopped beating because she suddenly felt lightheaded. She couldn’t believe it. Michael had been shot and she didn’t even know about it. What if he died? He would never hear her say she loved him and she was such a butt to walk away from him. “That damn asshole shot Michael.” She continued reading. According the other SWAT member’s statement, before Michael’s knees gave way, he was able to pull the gun he had tucked at the back of his waistband, point it at the man’s forehead, then pull the trigger. Amy covered her mouth with her hand. She imagined the bullet ripping Michael’s flesh. The pain…Jesus. Tears flowed down her cheeks like an 107
Tierney O’Malley open dam. She was reading the story about Michael getting expelled from middle school for beating up a boy who teased him about having a ho for a mother when the cabin door opened. Michael walked in from his walk and carrying shopping bags. He looked cold, but the familiar swagger was still there. “Hey,” he greeted, placing the bags on the vanity table, then removing his skullcap. His hair stood on end, his cheeks and nose bright red. Even his ears. And he looked so adorable. Amy stared at him. Overwhelming happiness surged from deep within her. God, had it been this morning when they faced a suicidal man who pointed his gun at them? When Michael told her to leave the store with Marsha and Linda, she dragged her feet. She didn’t want to leave Michael alone with that brokenhearted crazy husband. Once outside the store, however, and she heard gunshots, she felt as though she was the one who got hit. She wanted to run back to Michael, but Linda and Marsha had a tight grip on her arms and dragged her across the street where they asked for help. The whole time they stood and waited for the police to come, she cried and prayed that nothing bad happened to Michael. She wanted to show courage, to look courageous and confident that Michael would 108
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas come out unharmed. Tears, fear, anxiety and jumbled up feelings, however, were stronger than her resolve to put up a brave face. She shook uncontrollably. It was only when she spotted Michael stride out of the store that she was able to breathe. If it weren’t for Marsha holding her arm, she would have crumpled to the floor. Apparently, the two consecutive shots they heard had come from Michael’s gun. He shot the man in the shoulder first. The man’s gun lowered, but didn’t drop it so he fired again. The bullet struck his forearm. It was necessary. The man wouldn’t be able to use his arm for a while. At least he was still alive. And Michael was alive. Looking at her with that sexy grin on his face. “You okay, babe?” “Never been okay in my life.” Michael tucked his hands in his pockets. His gaze darted back and forth between Amy and the scattered papers on the couch. He started to look uneasy. “So this is what you’ve been hiding, Michael Demeter. Let’s see. You were a bully, lived on the streets off and on, got kicked out of middle school and high school, had fights with your mother’s clients, Talaitha Demeter also known as Susanna is your mother and a prostitute that you tried to protect and support. You’ve been in juvenile 109
Tierney O’Malley detention…I don’t know how many times, but never been jailed—thanks to your guardian angel, Murphy. Now tell me, baby. Why did you hide all of this from me?” Devoid with his usual swagger, Michael walked toward the window. He leaned his shoulder on the casing and then stared outside. For a minute he remained quiet. Amy waited. The way Michael’s brow furrowed, she could tell that he must be trying to figure out how to start, where to start. Anyone who looked at him would never guess that he had a vulnerable side, and with an enemy he called his past. Right now, he looked so lost that Amy felt the need to wrap her arms around him. However, he might misconstrue her compassion to pity. So she decided to wait until Michael was good and ready to tell her everything he wanted her to know. She didn’t have to wait long. “When I was born, Mom told the nurse that my name is Mihai. It’s a Romanian form of Michael. But the nurse misheard or misunderstood Mom and wrote Michael on the form. I wasn’t even a day old and my life already started with an error. I guess it was a sign that my life would be full of challenges, of wrongness.” “Things happen for a reason.” Michael glanced at her, then went back to 110
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas looking outside. “I saw your birth certificate. You were born Michael Demeter. But you are using Murphy.” “My name had been dragged through all kinds of shit. Google Michael Demeter and you’ll get hundreds of hits. And none of it is good. When I met Murphy Santos, I remembered him saying that he often thinks of Demon when he hears Demeter. So I said to him, his name reminds me of the Smurphs.” “I like the blue little guys.” “Me, too. Murphy always wears a red hat. He has a bulbous nose and big round blue eyes.” “Like Papa Smurph.” Michael smiled. “Yeah. Like Papa Smurf, Murphy is a leader. He helps everyone in times of danger and crisis. Everyone turns to him.” “That’s Papa Smurph, alright.” “It took only a couple of meetings before I realized I wanted to be like him. To start with, I borrowed his name.” “I bet he liked the idea.” “Not really. He sat on the idea for weeks. Finally, he decided he’d gamble with me. But he made me promise not to do anything stupid that would ruin the name and he’d let me use it.” “I think that’s a good story that you can share with anyone.” “Good? I borrowed another man’s name 111
Tierney O’Malley because I’m a bastard, Amy.” “So? I don’t see anything wrong with being a bastard.” She raised a brow when Michael stared at her long and hard. “My grandpa was a despicable drunk. He spent most of his time with his associates and their secretaries. He honestly believed that marriage was all about bringing home money and having dinner with his family once in a while. My mom was once a slot machine addict. I was glad counseling helped her, otherwise she would have been divorced by now. My point, Michael, is that we are not what you thought us to be. We have our dirty laundry in the closet, too.” “It’s not the same, baby.” “When I asked you who Bear Hips—I’m sorry I called your mother that. But I thought she was your girlfriend. Anyway, when I asked you about her, you refused to answer. Was it because she was once a prostitute?” “An uneducated Roma prostitute who got pregnant when she was seventeen.” Michael shook his head. “But that’s not why I never mentioned her. I’m proud of my mother, of what she had done to keep me, us together. I will always be proud of her. Even when I was mocked, made fun of because Mom was a hooker. Everyone at school knew who she was. No girls would want to go out with me because my mom 112
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas was icky. I beat the boys who made fun of me and I avoided the girls who giggled behind my back.” “So why did you not tell me about her?” “It was her decision actually. She said I always ended up in a fight because of her name. She tried using Talaitha before when she worked as a housekeeper. Bad luck with coworkers and customers didn’t give her any chance to enjoy her job though. For some reason, men targeted Mom, as if she was a magnet for them. She also caused envy among women. So after that, she began using Susanna.” “She must be really beautiful.” Michael smiled. “She is. She was a big money maker in the bar where she worked. But they didn’t provide her protection from the fucking sadists who treated her like a dirty cum rag they tossed on the ground.” “You took the job of protecting her instead.” Michael pointed his gaze on his feet. “Poverty, Amy, is a bitch. Very few are lucky to get out of it. Most die trying. I was lucky to meet someone like Murphy. He helped me get jobs. Still, my background hovered above me like a black thundercloud, you know. When I got a job at Anthony’s Restaurant, I was ecstatic. Pay was good, tips were awesome. But when money disappeared from the till, I was the first to blame and then was fired. No investigation, no questions 113
Tierney O’Malley asked.” “Not fair.” “Life, I learned, is not fair to those who can’t afford to buy shiny shoes and smart clothes.” “Is that why you decided to bury your past?” Michael shook his head. “No. I flipped life, fate and everyone who didn’t understand me. Until I met…her.” Her? Amy’s body stiffened. She was momentarily speechless. Michael never mentioned any girlfriends. He said his love life was as dry as the Arizona desert. So who was her? She wanted to ask the question. Fear of hearing who the woman was, of their connection, however, stopped her. “Are you going to ask me who Jane was?” “I want to, but I’m afraid to hear your answer. I’m already jealous and you haven’t said anything.” Michael chuckled. “You’re such a jealous woman.” “Because I love you.” “I know, love.” Sighing, Michael looked out the window again. “I met Jane while I was still at the academy. Her father was an officer, her mom was a council woman. We hit it off right away. I loved her. Or so I thought. Blinded, I told myself that I should tell her everything about me before I offer her marriage. I expected her to accept who I was. 114
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas After all, she professed her love for me many times. I was wrong. She turned like a freaking banshee, accused me of touching her with my dirty hands, of fooling her with my uniform. She cringed when I tried to touch her.” “Her love was shallow, Michael.” “I know. As it turned out, I never loved her the way I loved you.” “How can you tell?” “The world stayed the same when she turned her back on me. When you left, the sun became dark, the moon lost its magic, the stars turned dull, my world turned grey and life itself abandoned me. I love you so much, Amy. When I met you, I felt love as I never felt it before. I didn’t want you to reject me… God, I hope you understand. My fear that you’d feel the same way as Jane if you find out the truth about me forced me to put a lid on my horrible past, baby. Pathetic excuse, I know.” Michael raked his hair with his fingers. Amy stood up and slowly walked toward Michael. When they were a foot away from each other, she stopped. “Anything else you wanted me to know?” Michael shook his head. “Everything is out. Do you have questions?” “Yes.” “Yeah?” 115
Tierney O’Malley “When are you going to show me the most wicked night you and I could both share?” As if the Commander-in-chief himself walked in the room, he stood straight up. “What are you saying, love?” Amy closed their distance. “Honestly, Mihai Demeter, it hurts me to think that you didn’t trust me enough to share your background. But I understand.” ** ** He pulled Amy tight against him, pressed his lips to her temple and closed his eyes. Oh God. How could he’d been so blind. Amy never complained about anything. The apartment they lived in, for living in Arizona away from her family. She never questioned him. Period. Until she saw his mom that she referred to as Bear Hips or the bearhipped woman. Michael laughed. “I feel like bursting right now. You still want me for sure?” “Yes.” “Then say it again,” he whispered in her ear before nibbling her earlobe. He followed it up with tantalizing kisses in the hollow of her neck. “Yes, I want you.” “No, the part when you said the word love before leaving Linda and Marsha’s store.” Between words, he showered kisses around her 116
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas lips and along her jaw. “I love you, Michael. If I love you a little bit more, I’ll explode.” “Wow. Sounds so romantic.” “Oh, stop it.” They exchanged simultaneous smiles. Hers a secretive one and his…well, he tried a suggestive one that made Amy laughed. “It’s Christmas Eve,” Michael whispered. “I know. You have only a few hours left to stay true to your words, Michael.” “I haven’t forgotten.” Cupping her face, he stared at Amy. “Next Christmas Eve, I hope to make love with you as your husband. Do you think—” “Are you, are you proposing?” “I’m just speaking out loud.” “What?” Amy pinched his stomach. “Yeow! Woman, that hurts.” “Don’t tease.” He cupped Amy’s face again and rubbed the pad of his thumbs over her cheeks. “Mom is right about you.” “About me? But I haven’t even met her.” “She’s a Roma.” “And?” “She believed that when you touched me, you made me pure. She’s my greatest advocate. Forced me to see that you’re different. She told me that 117
Tierney O’Malley you’ll accept me even if I’m as poor as Oliver Twist.” “And she’s right, Michael. That first night in the cabin, when I watched you sew the button back on my dress, I knew you were the one.” “You saw me?” “Yup. I stood by the door. That night, I fell in love with you.” “Oh, honey.” His gaze travelled from her face. Earlier, while walking and thinking about what to give Amy for Christmas, he spotted Keir Jewelry store. Roma liked jewelry. Women felt lost without them. He, for one, couldn’t recall a time when he didn’t wear a ring. With hope that Amy would wear his ring for good, he walked inside the store. Tucking his hand in his right pocket, he smiled as he felt the ring nestled deep inside. He took it out of the box because he thought about dangling it on the Christmas tree, which he realized quickly was kind of cheesy. He hadn’t thought of a better way to give it to Amy. Right now though, was as good as any. Why stray from the good old tradition of going down on one knee. His eyes still on Amy, he did just that. “Michael?” He held Amy’s left hand. “Wearing a ring as a symbol of devotion and commitment is a tradition that started in Egypt and Rome. The Vena Amoris 118
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas or Vein of Love on the fourth finger on the left hand, they believe…” He fished the white gold ring with three diamonds to represent the past, present and the future out of his pocket and slowly slid it on her finger. “Led straight to one’s heart. Amy, will you marry me?” Amy went down on her own knees. Joy bubbled in her shaky laugh and shone in her wondrous eyes. Ah, someday their children would have those same eyes. “I will marry you, love you, be with you forever.” “Now and forever,” he uttered and then sealed his promise with a kiss. It was a soft-as-snow kind of kiss that turned harder. When Amy moaned and pulled him closer for a deeper kiss, Michael grinned. “Always eager, aren’t we,” he said in between sucking her upper lip. “Because you make me feel hot—all the time.” “Maybe you’re hot because of the fireplace.” “No. Only you can make me feel this way.” “Glad to hear that.” He gave her a long and wet kiss guaranteed to keep her hot and panting. His hand wandered closer to the part he planned to taste, feel and fill all night. He stopped though when he got closer to feeling her warm heat. “I have something for you. A Christmas gift.” With one last quick kiss, he stood up and walked to where he left the shopping bags. He pulled out 119
Tierney O’Malley one gift and handed it to Amy sitting on the rug. She looked dazed. “What’s in it?” “Silly goose. Open it.” While Amy tried to unwrap the gift without ruining the wrapper, which he thought was a silly thing, he pulled the blanket off the back of the couch and then laid it in front of the fireplace. Next, he went to the kitchen, grabbed two wineglasses, then went back to the living room. He took the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from the other shopping bag. His baby was still unwrapping her gift. He laughed. “Hon, I don’t think we can save the wrapper.” “I know. But I’m trying to guess what’s inside.” Michael removed his shirt, then sat down beside Amy. He hooked a finger on the edge of the wrapper then ripped it good. “No—alright.” Amy quickly opened the box. He watched, hard and feverish from anticipation. The moment Amy mentioned his promise of a wicked night, his mind wandered to what he would do to make this night special for both of them. “Pink negligee.” She peaked at the tag. “Aww, you bought this from Linda and Marsha’s.” “They helped me pick that one. Try it on.” “Are you going to spoil me?” “It’s my future wife’s prerogative to be spoiled 120
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas as well as her prerogative to be pleasured in bed.” Michael heard a catch in her breath. “I haven’t got you a present yet.” “Ah, but you already gave me the best present there is.” “What?” “You’re love, acceptance, understanding and loyalty. You’re my greatest present, baby.” “I’ll be right back.” “No. I want to see you put that on.” “You sure?” Amy’s smile was playfully mischievous. Michael’s cock thickened. The wait was agonizing. It was worth it though. He saw every part of Amy as she removed her clothes one at time, leaving only her white lace panty. His discipline nearly deserted him when he glanced down at the dark patch shielding the part of her that he wanted so badly. Amy finally stood up to put her negligee on. By all that was good, she looked ethereal, even more beautiful now. How was that even possible. His cock throbbing hard, he decided to uncork the wine bottle instead, then poured some into the wine glasses. He handed her the glass. “Let’s have this drink.” Amy sat down in front of him again. “Life is full of surprises, love. We’ll have squabbles. You’ll probably call your brother to complain 121
Tierney O’Malley about me a time or two. But I promise to try my best to keep you sane, sated, satisfied and wellloved.” “And I’ll do the same.” “Here’s to us. Now and forever.” “Now and forever.” The fire in the fireplace danced, casting a yellow gold glow on Amy’s skin. “You look great in your gown.” “Thank you,” she said above a whisper. “You like it?” “Very much. I feel like a goddess in this. So perfect.” “Glad you like it.” He paused. “Now take it off.” “I just put it on.” “Okay, but now I want you to take it off again. Or shall I do it for you? I can’t promise you that I’d be careful though.” When Amy made a move to remove her gown, he shucked his cargo pants. His shirt joined the floor seconds later. Amy’s eyes riveted to his bulging jockey briefs. “Good God.” “You already know that we fit, hon.” Slowly, he scooted toward her. He took the glass from Amy’s fingers, drank the rest of it and then put the glass on the table. “Come here.” Amy, licking her lips, came closer until their 122
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas knees touched. He smiled. For some reason, whenever he showed his intention of making love with her, Amy would start licking her lips. “You’re beautiful, baby. And you’re mine.” “I’m yours.” He ran his fingers on her shoulders and arms before cupping her breast. Oh how he enjoying its heaviness and smooth feel. “Lie down.” Michael’s hands followed every contour of her body until he reached her warm heat. She was slick and ready. “Michael,” “I’m good in keeping promises, love.” Michael smiled and kissed her. He plunged his tongue inside her mouth and at the same time eased two fingers inside her. She moaned against his mouth, rocking her hips, urging him to go deeper. He suckled her lower lip, then her chin. His head bent to lap on her nipple. Like a starve man, he sucked her hard. Amy’s juice pooled and wet his fingers. “Hmm…love your breasts. And this…” He kneeled in front of her. “I can’t get enough of your taste.” He anchored her leg over his shoulder, spread her folds, then he began to feast. The little nub he knew would give her pleasure felt heavenly against the roof of his mouth. He pulled it with his lips while his fingers pumped hard inside her. Michael flicked his tongue on her clitoris, teasing, teasing until he felt his own orgasm peak. It was too soon. He wanted this 123
Tierney O’Malley night to last. Growling, he switched between sucking and licking Amy. “Oh God. Michael, I want to come.” “Not yet.” His control was slipping and his dick rock hard. But he waited. Lying on the floor, he crooked his finger at Amy. “Ride me, Amy.” On all fours, Amy helped him remove his briefs. When done, instead of straddling him, she wrapped her slender fingers around his shaft. “My turn to taste you.” And she did. Michael’s toes curled from the sheer pleasure of her timid licking. If he let this go on another second, he’d ejaculate while her mouth was wrapped around his hard shaft. Unable to bear it anymore, he pulled her on top of him. “Enough tease. Spread your legs. Take me in. Yes, that’s—fuck!” Amy pressed herself, taking his whole length inside her body. “Hmm…so nice.” She began to rock back and forth. Michael reached down to touch her clit. “Yeah, baby. Fuck it. Come on. Fuck me.” Amy looked down at their joined bodies, licking her lips. Ah, his little fiancée would probably enjoy looking at herself in the mirror while he fucked her. Next time. For now, he’d give her what he could. He surged his hips upward to meet her. 124
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas “Michael, oh, my God!” She lifted her breasts, rolling her nipples in between her thumbs and forefingers. “I want your mouth on my breasts, Michael.” “And you’ll get it,” he placed his hands just below her armpits and pulled her closer so he could suckle her. Amy moaned and rocked her hips faster. He gave her a few minutes to take control before shifting their position. Amy on her side facing the fireplace, he lifted her leg, rubbed the tip of his cock on her pussy before entering her in one swift move. “Oh, oh. Fuck, love. You fill me.” “Yeah. We fit together, love.” He pumped his hips, his balls slapping against Amy’s ass. “Like that, huh?” “Yes. Yes. Deeper, Michael.” Once again, Michael switched positions. He kept Amy on her side, her leg anchored against his shoulder. In this position, he was able to penetrate her deep. “Ahh…baby, you make me feel good. So fucking good.” He fucked her hard. As soon as she screamed his name, he flipped her on the floor gently so he was on top, their bodies still joined. “Promise me one thing.” Breathing hard, Amy asked, “What, love?” “Never, ever save me again. Promise me!” 125
Tierney O’Malley “I promise.” He surged deep and hard into her pussy. His release shook him to the core. Exhausted, he collapsed on top of her, quickly rolled to the side and pulled Amy against him. “I love you,” he repeated, then closed his eyes. “I love you more.” Those were the words he heard last before he finally let sleep win.

Another Wicked Night Before Christmas
Chapter Seven
A
my woke up alone. The smell of coffee, bacon, fried rice and…something with beef in it surrounded her instantly. Is it lunchtime already? Wow. Did she sleep that long? She remembered Michael carrying her upstairs. They made love again before finally falling asleep in his arms. She didn’t know what time, but if she would guess, it would have been morning. Amy stretched her legs under the blanket. Her muscles screamed. Yeah, it was morning when they finally called a halt to their wicked night. She relived everything that transpired yesterday—from the trip to see the tree that had gone haywire to the time when Michael slipped the beautiful ring around her finger. Amy looked at the ring. Then she noticed something. Michael’s ring was back on her right finger. She laughed. Baby, how in the world did you do this. Yawning, she thought to linger in bed a bit when she heard voices. Mom and Dad? She heard 127
Tierney O’Malley Lucas’ laughter, too. Quickly, she took a short five-minute shower, dressed in long green skirt that billowed at the bottom and long sleeved brown blouse with a wide neckline. Shoving her feet in her Uggs boots, she went downstairs. She spotted Michael right away standing by the fireplace, talking to her father. The memory of what they had done in front of the fireplace brought warm feeling all over her. Quickly, she scanned the room. Did they leave evidence that they camped there last night? The wine bottle wasn’t there and the blanket was back on the back of the couch. Thank goodness. She noticed the six foot-Christmas tree in the corner ablaze with lights. Its base was covered with presents, which reminded her, she hadn’t got Michael a present. An idea struck her. She looked at the clock. Ten AM. She still had time. Michael was the first to notice her standing by the steps. Their eyes met. He raised a brow and a smile that she could read only as I-know-whatyou’re-thinking. When her dad looked at her, a horrible idea that he knew what she and Michael had been doing popped in her head. Suddenly, the room temperature felt like it went up a notch. “Hi, Daddy. Merry Christmas.” “Merry Christmas, darling.” Amy gave her dad a hug. She had dreamed 128
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas about this, of Michael meeting her dad. Now that it finally happened, she didn’t quite know what to do. Her dad, like Lucas, had been protective of her. What if he wasn’t willing to share her yet with Michael? “Glad you made it. Mom’s here, right?” “In the kitchen with Cara and Lucas. Putting away dinner stuff.” She looked at Michael. He looked like a boy who had just received the best toy ever. “Dad, this is…you already met Michael.” “Yes. And I already gave him my blessing. Stop worrying.” “Really, Daddy?” “Yes.” “And I already told him what I’d do to him if he failed to treat you right. The same goes for you, Amy. A good relationship will only work if both parties work hard at it.” “I know, Dad.” She tiptoed and kissed her dad on the cheek before standing in front of Michael. “Merry Christmas.” “Merry Christmas, love.” Surprise was an understatement when Michael kissed her right in front of her dad. Her lips were still tingling when Cara, Lucas and her mom came in the room. “Sheez. ‘Bout time you joined us. Stayed up late playing cards, talking about the weather?” Lucas asked. Unspoken laughter glowed briefly in his 129
Tierney O’Malley eyes. Amy stuck her tongue at Lucas. “Not cool, Lucas. You’re such a jerk.” “What?” Lucas asked with feigned innocence. “Just asking.” “Darling, leave Amy alone. Hello there, sweetheart.” Amy scowled at her brother who just laughed before turning his back on her to talk to her dad and Michael. “Hi, Mommy. I missed you.” She gave her mom a huge hug. “Me, too. Oh, I’m so happy you are alright. That man could’ve—” “Mommy. It’s alright. Michael was there to protect me. I wasn’t afraid.” “He did a marvelous job of protecting you, too.” Lucas snorted. Cara swatted her husband’s arm playfully. Lucas retaliated by pulling her into his arms. Amy smiled at her best friend and sister in-law, Cara. “How’s the doctor’s appointment?” “What—oh, that. It’s okay. The little one in my tummy is fine. How are you? Got your hundred messages. Told you we’d make it.” “You didn’t see your doctor, did you, Cara?” Cara glanced at Lucas. “Well, no. You see, your brother knew Michael was coming and, well, he planned us not to come so you and Michael would 130
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas be here alone to work on your misunderstandings.” “Ah. Mom and Dad?” “They knew.” “Hey, brat. Did you hang your Christmas wish on the tree this year?” “Not yet, buckteeth.” Michael raised a brow. “Buckteeth?” “Don’t start, brat, or you won’t get your present,” Lucas bit every word. Amy laughed. Her brother never liked it when she called him buckteeth. “Has your wish last year been answered?” Oh, God. She knew her brother’s grin too well. He knows. She looked at Cara who suddenly showed interest in the garland on top of the mantle above the fireplace. She told him. She was saved from replying when Christmas carolers started singing outside the cabin. Everyone went to look outside, except for Amy. She asked Michael if she could borrow his cell phone. As soon as Michael handed it to her, she checked his contact list and then started scrolling through names. Upstairs, in her room, she found what she was looking for—Talaitha Demeter. **** Christmas music floated in the air, tiny lights 131
Tierney O’Malley blinked from the lampposts and stores. Strangers greeted one another happy holidays while children ran about without a care in the world. There were couples dancing and Whistler staff in elves costumes mingling about, most likely watching out for troublemakers. What a beautiful Christmas night. The snow-covered trees were still, it stopped snowing, and stars were actually out to bear witness to the celebration. Michael put the cell phone back in his pocket. Murphy just called to wish him Merry Christmas and ordered him to have fun. He watched the two women he loved more than anything in the world. Amy, arm-in-arm with his mother, peeked at the paper wishes hung on the tree. They laughed, awed and at one point, both blinked their eyes as if something they read had made them teary eyed. Earlier at around three in the afternoon, he was surprised to see Lucas come back in the cabin with his mother in tow. When he just stood and gawked at his mother, Amy saved him by launching an explanation. His mother, she said, was her Christmas present. A flurry of greetings and salutations followed. Lucas had pulled some strings to get her mother a plane ticket so she could come and celebrate Christmas with them. It was, by far, the best present he’d ever had. He and his mother—unsavory past and all—were welcomed in the McLeod’s bosom. 132
Another Wicked Night Before Christmas He continued to watch Amy and his mom until Amy sensed him. She looked at his direction, then smiled. Damn. How he loved that smile. He couldn’t wait for them to come back to the cabin. Pulling the Under Armour cap down to cover his ears, he walked toward his mom and Amy. “Hello, ladies. What are you two giggling about?” “Nothing,” both replied simultaneously. Jingle Bell Rock started playing. His mom began dancing. She always loved music and dancing. Steve, Amy’s friend came and asked his mom if she would like to dance. Laughing, she said yes. Alone with Amy, Michael pulled her close. “Thank you.” “For what?” “Everything. For bringing Mom over and for loving me.” Amy smiled. “Just kiss me and we’ll call it even.” He did just that.
